Mom Writes Moving Letter to Her Daughter's Stepmom

We're always impressed when we read about low-conflict, high-fun blended families. For one thing, if you're personally involved in a more dramatic version of co-parenting, the stress-free kind can feel about as common as a unicorn strolling in and plopping down on the couch to watch Bachelor in Paradise with you. (Maybe even rarer than that.) And while there are plenty of ways in which divorce can be terribly hard on kids, it can also pave the way for newly formed families in which everybody's happier.

Hayley Booth, for one, is rocking that blended-family life. Her 4-year-old daughter, Rachel, calls her "Mommy" — and calls her stepmom "Mommy" as well.

Booth is unfazed by the shared title. She wrote about co-parenting with her current partner, her ex and her ex's wife in an Aug. 16 Facebook post that's now going viral.

Hayley Booth

Hayley Booth

“Often times I have people ask me how my ex, his wife, my husband and I co-parent so flawlessly,” Booth wrote. “My answer is always the same — we just love our daughter. Seriously, it’s just that simple.”
We'd argue that this simple — and graceful — approach could very well be anything but simple to pull off. But this family is doing just that.

Booth continued, “No child deserves to be tossed around back and forth, used as a bargaining chip, or to be put in the middle of any adult drama. She didn’t choose to be born, and she certainly never chose for her parents to be divorced. Why would we make her life any harder by making her choose which set of parents to love?”

There are few moms who would cherish sharing the title of "Mommy" with a stepmother, but in this case, Booth says it's just fine. In fact, she's a big fan of her daughter's stepmom, Dakota Pitman.

More: Not a Baby, Not School-Aged: Why Being 4 Is Hard

“She IS her mommy,” Booth said. “She is there for her always, and she takes care of her, she plays with her, she teaches her life lessons and how she should behave, she gives her hugs and kisses goodnight, she does everything any mother would do... But most of all, she loves her like she is her very own.”

“I love her... She’s become one of my best friends and I rely on her for many things," Booth said of Pitman. "She is one of the strongest people I know and I am thankful for her every day. Don’t tell me that peaceful coparenting isn’t possible, because it is. I know it is. Because I do it everyday.”

Booth's remarkable post also featured a pic of Booth and Pitman walking Rachel to preschool together. It's been liked 17,000 times and shared over 21,000 times — and no wonder. If this isn't co-parenting goals, we don't know what is.

However, Booth did admit that the transition was a tough one at first (proving she is in fact human).

“I was jealous at first... It’s really hard to let another woman into your child’s life. It took a little bit over a year to form the relationship we have now,” Booth told Us Weekly. “There were very rough times between all of us in the beginning. But it was like one morning we woke up and the skies had cleared and we were able to work through all the differences we had in the past.”

If this all seems like an impossible dream to you, rest easy; you're not alone. Rachel's many parents are definitely unique among divorced and remarried families. But they don't have to be. In fact, this blended family even spends their weekends together at a local water park.

Booth said of their outings together: “When Rachel says 'Mommy' or 'Daddy,' we all laugh and ask her ‘Which one!?’

Actually, we're not quite convinced these guys are human. They may be celestial beings after all. But we admire them nonetheless.

Victoria Beckham Is in Tears as Eldest Son Brooklyn Leaves for College

Awww. Who knew that young, poker-faced Posh Spice would grow up to be the weepy mom of a brand-new college freshman? We didn't see that one coming.

Victoria Beckham needs a hug right now, and many parents of teens can relate. Brooklyn Beckham, Victoria's oldest son with husband David, left England and headed across the pond to attend Parsons School of Design in New York City.

V Beckham

Victoria posted a sweet Instagram tribute to her son on the occasion, writing, "We are all so proud of you Brooklyn." The picture shows the designer with tears on her face snuggling close to her 18-year-old, clearly not wanting to say goodbye.

She added, "Amazing A level results and off to college. We love you so much and will miss you. #yesiamcrying #emotional x"

Brooklyn is a fashion photographer who has already published his first book, What I See. He'll be studying photography (on a merit-based scholarship, by the way, not that he needs a scholarship) at the design school, following in the footsteps of famous Parsons alumni, from Donna Karan to Marc Jacobs to Ryan McGinley.

More: David Beckham Is Confused by Disney Lego Castle

Mama Beckham is not the only one in the family who's feeling verklempt about Brooklyn moving to the U.S. this fall. Romeo, Brooklyn's 14-year-old brother, posted his own (equally heartfelt but perhaps even more enthusiastic) message to Instagram.

Romeo B

Romeo B

“Brooklyn, I am going to miss u sooooo much xx I am so proud of you and can't believe you have come this far! Good luck in New York! And well done with your A levels xxx” he wrote alongside a photo of himself with his older brother at the Museum of Ice Cream. (Wait, what? Did you know this place was a thing?)

Brooklyn was interviewed in August by GQ about his upcoming move to the Big Apple.

“I’m nervous, and my mum’s upset about me leaving,” he said, “but it’s really exciting. I kind of live in the moment. I don’t think people in New York will annoy me, and I feel like when I go there, I’ll meet lifelong friends. Stuff like that.”

Oh, Brooklyn, we totally agree with you on everything but the not-annoying part. New Yorkers will definitely irritate you at some point — or at least the MTA will (that's the subway system for you non-New Yorkers). But hey, at least you'll have great stories to bring back to the Beckham manse for the holidays. And the NYC locals will definitely appreciate your name.

Apparently David Beckham was the one who kicked off Brooklyn's love of photography by giving him a camera when he was 14. And as for the fashion side of things, well, that's all Brooklyn's (still super-posh) mom.

“I do backstage photography at my mum’s shows, and I mean, I love doing it — but my mum’s like, ‘Go take pictures of the models!’ and I’m a bit shy,” Brooklyn said.

We see why they're going to miss him so much.

One Big Little Lies Star Might Run for Congress

With her history of outspoken political activism, it's no surprise that Big Little Lies star Shailene Woodley is low-key considering a run for Congress.

More: Shailene Woodley's Forsaking Her Young Fans for Dark HBO Show

"There was a point last year when I was working for Bernie Sanders where I thought, 'Huh, maybe I’ll run for Congress in a couple years,'" Woodley told The New York Times in a new interview. "And you know what? I’m not going to rule it out. Who knows? Life is big, and I’m young."

Woodley was one of the loudest celebrity voices at the Standing Rock oil pipeline protests — she was even arrested for protesting pipeline construction last year. And she's opening herself up to other political fights as well. Even though she told Nylon in 2015 that she wasn't a feminist, she seems to have rethought her position on that.

More: Listening to Shailene Woodley Talk About Her Diet Will Make You Cringe

"I would today consider myself a feminist," she told the Times. "If females start working through the false narrative of jealousy and insecurity fed through a patriarchal society, then not only will we have more women feeling confident in themselves and supportive of one another, but we will start introducing a type of matriarchy, which is what this world needs. We need more softness and more silence and more pause through the chaos."

For the immediate future, though, Woodley isn't making any moves toward a career shift, and she's still focused on her acting. But she's still young, and there's plenty of time for her to make that transition when the time is right for a successful bid.

Should we be too surprised that Jennifer Aniston has the correct opinions about one of the most iconic characters she's ever played? Heck no.

More: Friends! The Musical! Is Actually a Terrible Idea

Recently, a ridiculous 100-tweet-long thread making the case for why Rachel should have ended up with Joey instead of Ross on Friends has gone viral and forced everyone who was alive in the '90s to pick a side in an argument that doesn't even matter, because anyone who says Rachel wasn't meant to end up with Ross is unequivocally wrong.

And now, the queen herself has weighed in and confirmed that.

Asked by Elle about the raging online debate, Aniston showed us all the light and told us all the truth so we can finally let this silly thing die already, OK?

"No! No, no," she said when asked if she secretly wishes Rachel and Joey had ended up together. "They tried! I think there was a moment when Joey and Rachel got together that maybe it could happen, but it didn't. It was Ross and Rachel all the way. I really believe that if there's an afterworld of Friends, they're still thriving. Don't you? I just don't think Joey and Rachel could have made it. I think it was more physical than emotional with them. They were friends with benefits, and they left it at that."

And there we all have it. From the mouth of the queen, we have an answer. Now everyone please let this go and accept that the TV gods left everyone right where they were supposed to be, especially Ross and Rachel, those #lobsters.

Meet the Woman — & the Device — Taking on Sexual Assault

Yasmine Mustafa is fueled by a passion to leverage technology for good. She's the co-founder and CEO of Roar for Good, a B-corp aimed at helping protect women using safety wearable accessories and empathy education. She's also the founder of Girl Develop It Philadelphia, a nonprofit aimed at lessening the gender gap in technology. In addition, she sits on the board of Coded by Kids, a nonprofit that helps inner city youth learn how to code.

Now, just in time for students going back to college, Roar is launching a new product called Athena — a wearable device and personal safety app that allows users to set a status and location and then check in to let others know they're safe. It also lets users send an alert message to authorities in the event of an emergency.

More: Why It Matters That Taylor Swift Showed Up for Her Groping Trial

SheKnows sat down with Mustafa ahead of Athena's launch to get the lowdown on this new device aiming to combat sexual assault and rape culture.

SheKnows: How did you first get the idea for Athena?

Yasmine Mustafa: During my six-month solo trek through South America, I listened to countless stories from women who had experienced assault or abuse. Then, a week after I returned to Philadelphia, a woman was brutally raped one block from my apartment. The idea for developing a wearable safety device was born after learning that many women do not like existing self-defense tools.

Whether they are afraid of accidentally using their own self-defense tool on themselves or that they would be overpowered and their device used as a weapon against them, existing safety tools are just not cutting it for many. After realizing that existing solutions (pepper spray, tasers, etc.) were made by men and did not account for women’s needs, my co-founder and I banded together to devise a solution that was stylish, can help deter an attack, will alert help when needed and can’t be used against the person wearing it. That’s how the idea for Athena came about.

SK: How is Athena different from other similar wearable devices or phone apps that aim to do the same thing?

YM: We differ in terms of style, features and our social impact. We’re the only wearable in the market that was made to be stylish and discreet — something women want to wear. We’re also the only ones with various modes, which includes a built-in 95 [decibels or higher] alarm to help deter an attack (devised with the help of self-defense instructors and police officers — silent mode is also available).

MoreReminder: Vagina Is Not a Dirty Word

That said, we see Roar as so much more than a “product” company. While our Athena safety device was designed to help reduce assaults and get immediate help, our larger mission to use our business as a force for good drives everything that we do. We’re honored to be a Certified B Corporation, which means we meet rigorous social, environmental, transparency as well as accountability standards and are committed to using the power of our business to solve social problems. We don’t do these things to appeal to a particular generation or demographic — we do them because we feel they are the right things to do to make an impact.

SK: What do you hope to achieve with Athena?

YM: We are dedicated to helping reduce assaults. In the short term, we solved this by innovating on existing self-defense tools. Athena was made by women for women — it’s a simple device that connects to loved ones with the push of a button. It can also sound a loud alarm, and by late summer, we’ll also be adding 911 capabilities. In the long term, our goal is tackle societal norms that perpetuate violence and rape culture through our RoarBack program by investing in educational programs that teach young kids about respect, consent and healthy relationships.

SK: With many people going back to college soon, this seems to be a good time to invest in Athena. How do you see the product changing the way we handle/view sexual assault on college campuses?

YM: Our hope is that all women can one day live their lives without any fear of assault, discrimination or attack of any form. Moving towards gender equality will ultimately make a significant difference in this.

This includes having more men take action as allies and speak up on behalf of women (and minorities) to shift the normalization of today’s rape culture. It also means getting more women in leadership positions — both in corporations and government. Most importantly, it means creating an environment in which assault is unacceptable and survivors are not afraid to come forward to get justice. It’s these types of initiatives that will truly make a difference in bridging the gender gap to reduce incidents of sexual violence.

SK: Is Athena exclusively for women, or do you see it being helpful for other populations?

YM: Not at all! Though we market to women living in urban areas, we found out during our Indiegogo campaign that many people were purchasing Athena for their grandparents, children and others. We believe everyone has the right to feel empowered.

MoreCan Mexico City Subway's "Penis Seat" Help End Sexual Assault on Public Transit?

SK: Is there anything else you want people to know about Athena?

YM: We’re officially out of preorder mode — we shipped more than 10,000 devices last week! Also, our free Roar personal safety apps are out and available on iOS and Android, we announced a partnership to provide 911 capabilities this October, and we’re currently working with companies that want to buy Athenas for their employees.

Finally, both my co-founder Anthony and I say that nothing would make us happier than putting ourselves out of business. We want to live in a world where Athena isn’t needed, and we are committed to making that happen by donating to programs that get to the root cause of violence against women.

If you love 'Emma,' you'll adore these baby girl names

$

The name Emma was top of mind among more than just Jane Austen fans last year. According to the Social Security Administration, it's currently the most popular girl name in the U.S. Of course, if you're an expectant parent with your eye on this beautiful, classic name, this news may come as a huge bummer — at least, it might once you picture your kid in kindergarten with five other Emmas.

Although Emma is currently topping the charts, it wasn't always; it ranked in the 400s in the '60s, '70s and '80s before climbing the charts again. It was, however, extremely popular once before — at the turn of the century. No, not when 1999 changed over to 2000 — when 1899 changed over to 1900. Back then, Emma was the 13th most popular girl name in the U.S.

If you had your heart set on Emma but don't want to jump on the No. 1-name bandwagon, don't fret. There are scads of other quality baby girl names that are similar to Emma but probably won't require the use of a last initial throughout grade school. Below, we'll take a look at what makes Emma so dang adorable — and tease out girl names in a similar vein that just may make their way to the top of your (personal, not national) favorite baby name list.

Girl names that sound like Emma

Emma is a strong, traditional baby name, yet also downright pretty. It's easy to spell, easy to say and easy to pair with a middle name. Here are a handful of similar names that are close, but not too close. Also, keep in mind that Emma is a classic name, popular long ago and still enjoyed by modern parents. Some of these monikers are also older names that may not yet be on the upswing.

Names with French roots

Emma has origins in a couple of different languages (French and German); it was once a royal name in medieval England and was introduced by the Normans of northern France. In fact, Edward the Confessor's mother was known as Emma of Normandy. So let's take a look at other French names that work well in English to see if any of those spark your interest.

Names meaning "entire, universal"

If you'd like to explore a few names with similar meanings as Emma, check out these choices.

  • Alvara: universal protector
  • Erma: entire, universal
  • Gilda: entire, total
  • Hermine: entire, great
  • Ima: entire, universal
  • Imelda: universal battle

…or, hey, stick with Emma

If these names don't appeal, there really is nothing wrong with buckling down on your first choice. Take comfort in the fact that there are so many names out there these days — and that your baby's name can't possibly be as popular as "Jennifer" was in the '70s.

Cosby faces felony charges of sexual assault against Andrea Constand, a former Temple University employee who accused Cosby of drugging and raping her in 2004. Cosby was charged just days before the statute of limitations would have run out on the case. Dozens of other women have come forward, but for many of them, the statute of limitations to press charges has run out. Several testified at the May trial.

After 52 hours of deliberation, jurors were excused when they failed to reach a verdict. Prosecutors vowed to retry Cosby, and the next trial begins Nov. 6.

One Little Boy Brought Tough Guy John Cena to Tears In Sweet Video

Over the years, John Cena has gone from a WWE star to pop culture phenomenon, thanks largely to the fact that his heart is even bigger than his hulking muscles — he's known just as much these days for his philanthropy and activism as he is for his moves in the ring. Still, nothing could have prepared us for all the feels we'd feel while watching Cena be surprised by some of his biggest (and littlest) fans.

The video comes courtesy of Cricket Wireless, who released the total tearjerker on Monday, Aug. 21. In it, Cena begins by reading letters from fans whose lives have been greatly impacted by the wrestler's "never give up" motto.

One by one as Cena reads the notes, the camera cuts away to the fans who've written the notes... all tucked in a backstage area unbeknownst to the 40-year-old WWE entertainer. From a young man who was told he could never wrestle — or maybe even walk — again after an injury to a woman who struggled to adopt a child, the stories each prove poignant.

Cena is visibly moved but does a decent job of maintaining his composure.

Until, that is, he reads aloud a letter from a young boy whose mother was diagnosed with breast cancer. Named Tyler, the boy reveals that he gave a wristband to his mother that had been handed off to him by Cena ringside. Along with the wristband, the boy repeated Cena's mantra of hope to his mother: "Never give up."

At this point, Cena struggles to keep it together. Of course, that turns out to be a losing battle when Tyler bursts through a paper backdrop to thank his hero in person. As both the boy and Cena begin to cry, Cena wraps the boy in his arms. Moments later, Tyler's mother joins them.

Shortly after, all of the letter-writers file in to express their gratitude to Cena, who calls the entire thing the "coolest surprise ever."

Accepting a giant trophy from the group, he tells them, "Just remember that you guys do the work. Don't think that you're the only one who's up against it, and don't think you're the only one who [has] challenges to face every day. You all lead by example, and I mean it when I say it: Don't ever give up."

7 Foods That Will Help You Feel Less Bloated

If you’re anxious about pulling your bikini out of hibernation or hoping to wear a tighter dress that leaves little to the imagination, you might be hyper-aware of your stomach. Though you’re smokin’ hot no matter your size, shape or weight, if you’d like to decrease uncomfortable bloating post-lunch break, nutritionists and dietitians explain certain foods are better for you than others. In general, the more salt that’s in your diet, the more you can expect to puff up after you chow down.

“Foods that are high in fat and salt can cause belly fat. Consuming too much salt causes your body to retain water,” explains registered dietitian Dr. Cara Walsh from Medifast Weight Control Centers of California. “Eating foods high in fat can cause temporary weight gain, which delays your stomach from emptying, causing bloating. When your body retains water or can't break down a nutrient found in your food, this leads to bloating.”

More: These Foods Actually Improve Your Eyesight

It’s true that everyone’s stomach will expand at least somewhat after eating, but to decrease the bloat, try stocking your recipes with these tummy-friendly goodies.

Plain Greek yogurt

Skip the honey and the chocolate you dip into your daily Greek yogurt habit if you want to prevent bloating. Instead, go au naturel with the good ole-fashioned plain variety. The key word here is ‘Greek,’ according to Walsh.

“Greek yogurt has less dairy than certain types of yogurt available, so it decreases bloating in your stomach. Greek yogurt has less sugar and more protein than other [types] of yogurt, making it a better choice for your body,” she says.

Kombucha

If you haven’t tried kombucha yet, here’s your gentle nudge to give it a try. It’s an acquired tastes for sure, but clinical nutritionist Tara Coleman explains kombucha falls into the fermented food category, which includes other debloating picks like yogurt. They help flatten your stomach because they replenish the good bacteria in your digestive tract and improve your digestion. Consider taking a swig (or a chug) of kombucha midafternoon after you’ve had your lunch to promote a smoother transition to dinner.

Carrots

Here’s another reason to reach for a handful of baby carrots when those hunger pangs strike in the afternoon. Walsh says these easy nibblers won’t make you bloat, but will satisfy your cravings.

“Carrots are filled with potassium to help fight off bloating. The fiber found in carrots fills your stomach and makes you feel full without feeling bloated or tired,” she explains.

More: Yup, Eating the Right Foods During Your Period Can Help Ease PMS Symptoms

Ginger

While you probably don’t want to bite straight into a hard piece of ginger root (yuck!), Coleman does suggest shaving some fresh scraps into hot water to make a ginger tea in the morning before you head to the beach.

“Ginger contains a digestive enzyme that helps your body break down protein, and it can also have a nice calming and anti-inflammatory effect on your gut,” she says.

Eggs

If your response to your alarm clock each morning is sheer dread (and a silent prayer for just one more hour of sleep, please!), we feel you. But instead of turning over and avoiding the day, we encourage you to start your day with a tall cup of joe and a breakfast that’ll give you energy without bloating you. Walsh says because of the high amount of vitamins and minerals that eggs offer, you’ll fill up fast without being uncomfortable.

Melon

More of a fruit snacker than a veggie grazer? Coleman says to lean toward foods that contain a high percentage of water.

“Melon's high water content helps your body flush out excess sodium, making you feel less puffy and improving hydration. They are about 90 percent water, making it almost the equivalent to having a glass of water,” she explains. From watermelon and cantaloupe, cut up some pieces to keep in the fridge at work for easy access.

Asparagus

Great on the grill, ideal when served cool in a salad or even pickled, asparagus receives the expert seal of approval year-round. And for good reason. Walsh says these green superstars have both pre- and probiotics that help maintain the proper balance of gut bacteria while also fighting off bloating via weight loss.

What’s she mean exactly? Well, by, ahem, encouraging trips to the restroom. “Asparagus makes you pee, which helps you flush any extra fluids in your bladder and relieves bloating,” she says.

So the next time you feel like your stomach is about to pop out of your pants (even if no one else can see it), pop a few of these foods on your plate and you should be good to go.

What to Lay Out the Night Before the 1st Day of School to Make Morning a Breeze

After a long summer spent soaking up every single lazy, hazy day in sight, getting back into gear for the school year can be daunting... to say the least. Before we all know it, the alarm clock will be shouting at the top of its tiny electronic lungs that school is officially back in session.

If you're not ready for it, the morning you send your sweet little students back to school will be a study in stress. So how's a mama supposed to keep her sanity on the big day? Prepping the night before can mean the difference between a back-to-school breakdown and things running as smoothly as possible.

Here's what you can lay out the night before to get the school year started on the right foot.

1. Breakfast

Seriously, the more you have planned out for the following morning the better. You likely want to make sure you send your little one off to school with a full tummy, and you're far more likely to fix something nutritious and filling if you don't come up with it on the fly.

More: So Your Kid Wants a Cellphone: How Young Is Too Young?

2. Clothes

Remember how exciting it was to pick out your outfit for the first day back to school? Your child probably has a new outfit for the big day, right? Still, you know kids — despite the fact you took them shopping to pick out their entire first day ensemble, they'll inexplicably be unable to find one item the morning of. Have them gather their clothes and place them in a special spot to avoid any last-minute scavenger hunts.

3. Shoes (& socks!)

As obvious as this step sounds, it's one of those things that typically falls through the cracks. And falling through the cracks translates into peering into every nook and cranny to find your child's shoes and a semi-matching pair of socks before sending them off to school. Plus, by picking the shoes ahead of time, it gives you a minute to make sure they are classroom-ready (i.e., sans anything stuck in the soles, etc.).

4. Your child's backpack

Sure, you could technically count this as just another chore, but let's be real... it's kinda fun too. Go ahead and organize your child's school supplies to your heart's content, slide them in the undoubtedly brand-new super-cool backpack your little smarty-pants had to have and stash it somewhere close to the door.

5. A camera

You're going to want to snap a photo of your student as they cross over into a new school year — while also begging time to slow down, mind you — and nothing is a bigger buzzkill than not having a camera at the ready. Charge your smartphone or make sure to set aside your DSLR batteries and memory card. Oh, and if you have one of those cute back-to-school chalkboard props, pull it out as well.

6. Any required paperwork or forms

Although most of your child's school-related paperwork has probably already been submitted by now, there may be still be a lingering form you need to send with them for their teacher or school administration office. Getting it out of the way on the first day means avoiding any friendly reminders sent home via your kid's backpack on his or her first day of school.

7. Lunch

Lastly, go ahead and pack your child's lunchbox. At least this way you know if there are any gaps in your fridge or pantry you need to fill in order to keep your student stocked with healthy lunches all week long. Or if your child will be eating in the cafeteria, you can go ahead and send in cash for their lunch accordingly.

Yolanda Hadid Reveals Her Struggle With Lyme Disease Made Her Consider Suicide

For Yolanda Hadid, Lyme disease isn’t just something that has made the last five years of her life incredibly difficult — it also made her consider ending her own life.

In an interview with People magazine, Hadid discusses the impact the chronic neurological disease had on not only her physical health, but also mental health. She said that even though she was given antibiotics, her health deteriorated until the joint pain, exhaustion and insomnia made it difficult for her to perform routine tasks like answering an email or going to the bathroom.

Eventually, the Real Housewives of Beverly Hills star had to spend 22 hours each day in bed.

“I’m such a fighter, but I had to surrender,” she tells People.

But in 2014, two years after her diagnosis with Lyme disease, Hadid says she thought about suicide while on a trip to Florida with then-husband David Foster.

“I take off my clothes and slip into the dark blue ocean, which is cool and comforting,” she writes in her new memoir Believe Me: My Battle with the Invisibility of Lyme Disease out Sept. 12. “The waves gently wash over my naked body, and I can feel the current tugging at me. Tears pour out of my eyes, roll across my cheeks, and meld with the salt water as I try to still my mind to become one with the water’s ebb and flow.”

Hadid tells People that at that point, the pain just got to be too much to handle.

“God please just take me away in a wave. I can’t live like this one more day. Please carry my body away. I just want to disappear,” she writes in her book. “My next thought is a clear image of my three children. It shifts my consciousness immediately and that’s the only thing that keeps me from letting myself drift and drown.”

But now, three years later, Hadid is in what she says “feels like remission” from Lyme disease, and is determined to regain her health and strength, focus on her family and find a cure for the condition that has been rampant all summer across the United States.

As difficult as these past five years have been, I am so grateful that this journey has led me to living in the light,” she tells People. “I have had it all and lost it all, only to realize that less is more, money can’t buy you health or happiness, and one day at a time is good enough.”

How Do I Protect My Daughter From Eating Disorders?

Welcome to Survivor, in which author Catherine Newman tries to answer your questions about adolescents and why they’re like that — and how to love them despite everything.

Have a question for Newman? Send it to her here.

Question:

How do I protect my daughter from the epidemic of eating disorders? She has five friends currently suffering with various types. They're receiving different degrees of intervention and therapeutic support, and we talk about it, but how do I make sure she doesn't fall into the trap?

Answer:

That’s an excellent question. There are landmines all around our kids as they skip and gallop and tiptoe and sob their way to adulthood, with us on the sidelines praying they don’t get blown to smithereens. I’m not actually consulting 17 and 14 today, because one of my first thoughts, counter to almost all of the advice we give here, is not to talk excessively about eating disorders with kids who aren’t aware of them. You are probably thinking that I’m kidding myself — that at 14, my daughter is hyper-aware of eating disorders at her drama-queen-filled performing-arts charter school, but I think it’s something off to the side of her and her sturdy, wholesome friend group there. And as a person who learned everything — not only about eating disorders in the first place, but also about exactly how to cultivate one — from the don’t-have-an-eating-disorder made-for-TV movie Best Little Girl in the World, I take my own sense of this seriously.

We can inadvertently seduce our children in the interest of protecting them. Seventeen, for example, learned to be afraid of the dark from a picture book about why you shouldn’t be afraid of the dark. I watched a single movie and then spent the next year and a half drinking giant pots of jasmine tea for dinner and hiding all the food I wasn’t eating and keeping an elaborate journal detailing my “successes” and shame. If I hadn’t wasted all the time I wasted on girly bullshit — narcissistic boyfriends and bikini bodies and wasting away and apologizing — I’d be Hillary Clinton’s vice president by now.

Anyhoo, back to the eating disorders, which your child is, alas, all too aware of. In lieu of the teenagers, I consulted my brilliant feminist powerhouse of a friend Zevey Steinitz, who is among other things raising a gorgeously confident and strong-bodied daughter. These are some of her thoughts:

Never comment negatively about your own or her body. This one is huge, isn’t it? Because besides the role-modeling, there is also the vibe that comes from a household where people practice self-love. I am working on this I swear. Currently, I am trying to complain only about my wiry beard hairs since, bless them, this is not an issue the kids are in danger of developing. Also, we don’t have a scale in the house. It is worth asking yourself, "What is the message of a scale in the house?" A scale doesn’t actually offer any accurate information about health.

Teach your kid about the miracle of the body on a spiritual level (they come in all shapes and sizes, it is amazing they work at all, we wake up and thank whatever to be alive). We talk a lot in my house about women not being ornamental. These are not pretty objects, they are our bodies, and they’re how we move through the world doing important things: getting smart, protesting injustice, taking care of people. We need them to be strong and healthy so we can do good work.

Eat well and often. Eat together. Love food. This is a big one in my family. We love to eat, and we love to eat together. I mostly keep and serve healthy food at home so the kids can just eat when they’re hungry, and I don’t have to police them or worry that it’s junk. When the kids were younger, I used to encourage them to tune in and figure out if they were hungry or sated, and I think that helped teach them about their body’s cues. Our supersize culture does not, as we know, offer a great deal of encouragement to learn the basics about hunger and satiety. I think it’s also important to remember that these kids are growing. I notice my teenagers go through phases during which they are starving, eating all the time and packing on flesh — and then they grow, like, a foot over the next month. Creating extra human being is high-calorie work.

Watch Killing Us Softly and develop media literacy. Killing Us Softly: Advertising’s Image of Women is a documentary film about the sexualized, objectifying images of women that pummel us all day, every day. It’s super-eye-opening for young people and can start a beautiful lifelong process of cultivating fire-and-brimstone rage to burn off any remaining traces of shame and self-loathing. Both of my kids understand that women’s drive to be skinny is fueled by, among other things, profit, which is something they are deeply suspicious of. Also, of course, misogyny. It is really empowering for our daughters to understand this — to grasp the fact that loving their bodies is an act of resistance.

Finally, if you see signs of an eating disorder, take them very seriously right away, get therapy, and put the kid on a supervised eating plan before they turn 18. Talk to your pediatrician, get referred to a specialist, and go to nationaleatingdisorders.org for more information.

Malia Obama Moves Into Harvard Dorm With Help From Former FLOTUS & POTUS

Some very high-profile parents are experiencing a huge milestone this week: sending their firstborn off to college, likely supplied with extra-large twin sheets and plastic crates full of shoes, tangled computer cords and three months' worth of body wash.

Earlier this week, our friends the Beckhams bid their eldest, Brooklyn, a weepy farewell (online and in person) as he headed off to Parsons in New York City. And now, the Beckhams should have the Obamas over for scones and tea (spiked with rum) to commiserate, since Barack and Michelle Obama just said goodbye to Malia. Sasha's big sis is now busy getting settled in at her parents' alma mater, Harvard University.

More: How Malia & Sasha Spent Their Last Night at the White House

Daily Mail posted photos of the former POTUS and FLOTUS helping Malia move into an on-campus residence at the esteemed university one day before the rest of the teeming Harvard masses arrive for fall classes.

We don't know how the Obamas are handling things, but Malia was already out and about with friends exploring Cambridge, Massachusetts, in full hipster-freshman regalia (Alexander Wang graphic tee and black slip dress with trendy white kicks, of course). Malia will have a little time to get her bearings — and maybe figure out how to shake the Secret Service  — before classes begin on Wednesday, Aug. 30.

More: Here's Obama Being Pretty Much the Best Dad Ever

The former first daughter is a cool cat by all accounts, having postponed her Harvard education for a gap year to work internships at the U.S. Embassy in Spain and then in NYC at The Weinstein Company. Speaking of the latter, Malia is expected to study filmmaking at Harvard. And she's no newbie; in addition to the Weinstein internship, she worked with Halle Berry in 2014 on the set of Extant, and in 2015 scored an internship on the set of Lena Dunham's Girls.

Dunham raved over Malia to Howard Stern, "She's an angel. Obviously, we weren't making her go get our coffee. But she wanted to do all the jobs — that was the cool thing."

Actually, we're pretty convinced that "the cool thing" about Malia Obama is... all the things. Her parents and sister are no doubt going to miss her. But they'll probably be keeping busy at "football" games with the Beckhams. They'll be fine.

Baby Born During Solar Eclipse Gets the Coolest Name Ever

What do you name a baby girl born on the day of the total solar eclipse? (Hint: This is so not a trick question.)

Of course you name her Eclipse, because when else is that ever going to be an option? (Unless you went into labor mid-singing Bonnie Tyler's "Total Eclipse of the Heart" at karaoke, which would also be cool.)

Baby Eclipse

Baby Eclipse

Freedom and Michael Eubanks weren't preparing for an eclipse baby — their daughter's estimated due date was Sept. 3. But Freedom (see, Eclipse will do just fine with a mom named Freedom) went into labor just around midnight on Sunday. Baby Eclipse arrived on the scene at 8:04 a.m., totally eclipsing any total eclipse plans her family had for the day.

More: If You Love 'Emma,' You'll Love These Classic Baby Girl Names

Eclipse Alizabeth Eubanks might sound like a stalwart Victorian New England lighthouse keeper, but Eclipse will be growing up in Spartanburg, South Carolina, with her family. She joins big brother Grayson Noah, 2, who might or might not hold a grudge against his baby sister for ruining his plans to wear cool glasses and join his parents in staring directly at the sun.

“I kind of felt like it was meant to happen, to have her on this day,” Freedom said to ABC News.

More: Mom Writes Moving Letter to Daughter's Stepmom

What was the original plan for Eclipse's name? Violet, another popular entry from the Lighthouse Keepers of the 1800s Baby Names Anthology. (Yes, kidding, but wouldn't that be great?)

But Freedom was convinced that her baby's early arrival necessitated a change.

“I think it was just meant to be, her name,” she said. “We’re probably going to call her Clipsey.”

Sure, "Clipsey" kind of sounds like a 1920s gangster, but that just adds to the cool factor. And would you believe this total eclipse is now considered the most documented celestial event in history? Not a shabby birthday at all. In fact, the family's state of South Carolina was one of 14 states in the path of totality (complete blackout of the sun).

Eclipse wasn't the only baby born in Greenville, South Carolina, that day (although she was the only one whose name reflected the day's celestial event). She and 11 other future astronomers born at Greenville Memorial Hospital on Aug. 21 even received “Total Solar Eclipse” onesies.

Treatza Pizza Lunchables Are Making a Comeback

OK, '90s kids, I've got some nostalgic news that you might want to sit down for.

You ready?

OK.

Lunchables Pizza and Treatza boxes are officially making a comeback. I know your heart is probably racing with excitement (as is mine), so let's dive into the details.

More: Lunch ideas inspired by Lunchables, but so much better

In my opinion, the Pizza and Treatza boxes were the most fun of all the Lunchables because they transformed lunch into a pizza creation experience. And just like the original Lunchables, the new ones will also come complete with pizza crusts, Kraft mozzarella shreds and tomato sauce. And of course we can't forget the dessert pizza — chocolate frosting and candy-coated chocolate chips.

Well, there is something else. To make things even more retro cool, each box includes a Roarin’ Waters Capri Sun. We’re so excited.

You’ll find these treats on shelves at most major grocery stores for $2.99, which is quite the bargain when you consider the food and experience (and nostalgia!) inside the box.

In the series finale of Will & Grace, Harry Connick Jr.'s character, Leo, was still a major part of the show.

More: The Will & Grace Revival Trailer Is Officially Here

The flash-forward during the final episode showed the Debra Messing's character, Grace, had married Leo, and they had a college-age daughter. While they were dropping their daughter off at school, they ran into Will and his husband, Vince, played by Bobby Cannavale, who were dropping off their college-age son. The finale revealed former BFFs Will and Grace hadn't spoken in two decades, something that made fans of the show rightfully pissed.

So how does that ending jive with the show's revival? Star Megan Mullally gave a big hint to Entertainment Tonight, sharing, "All I can say is, my first line is, 'I had the craziest dream.'"

Even though that future glimpse of Will and Grace is apparently being rewritten, Leo is still going to be part of Grace's life. Messing shared a photo to Instagram showing herself and Connick getting cozy on set just like old times.

"Time to swooooooonnnnn," she wrote. "Yup! He's backkkkkkkkkkkk. That southern gentleman that stole all of our hearts- @harryconnickjr . There will never be another Leo."

We don't know how big a role Connick will play in the revival, since his marriage to Grace in the series finale no longer exists. But the fact that he's back and reprising that role is good enough news to celebrate.
