J.K. Rowling's Next Big Series Is Hitting the TV Screen

0
0

J.K. Rowling fans will be the happiest to know that more of her work will be released soon! The magical author's first television show will be out at the end of the month, but this time, there won’t be any magic at all.

More: J.K. Rowling Is an Actual Pro at Shutting Down Twitter Trolls

In recent years, Rowling hasn’t just been completely owning Piers Morgan on Twitter. She’s also been writing more backstory for the Harry Potter series via her official fan website, Pottermore, and has even written more books completely unrelated to Potter and Hogwarts. Under her pseudonym Robert Galbraith, which was quickly revealed, Rowling released a mystery series called Strike: The Cuckoo’s Calling, which, according to Elle, is a complete “style departure.”

More: J.K. Rowling May Be Done With Harry Potter — but We Definitely Aren't

The London-centric novels and soon-to-be show feature the day-to-day life of a hardworking detective named Strike. In an interview, the project's executive producer, Ruth Kenley-Letts, explained a bit of what to expect from the show: “What makes Strike an exceptional investigator is that he just works very hard. He’s not like Sherlock — blessed with the ability to see everything. He’s a former soldier who lost a leg in Afghanistan and who had a difficult upbringing. He’s not magical. There’s something appealing about that. It makes a nice change to have a show where the crimes aren’t solved in a clever-dick way but because they put the effort in.”

So, while the show is unfortunately not the Sherlock/Harry Potter crossover we were secretly hoping for, it is the next cool thing to come from the mind of J.K. Rowling. Harry Potter fans should be pleased by the storytelling, and fans of mysteries on the streets of London will have something new to love.

The show is set to come out Aug. 27 on the BBC, but no U.S. release date has been revealed yet.

Leonardo DiCaprio Will Star as Leonardo da Vinci in a Biopic, Finally

The day has finally come. We were all expecting it. Leonardo DiCaprio will star in a biopic as Leonardo da Vinci.

More: Leonardo DiCaprio speaking Italian to the Pope is heavenly AF

The upcoming film will depict the great inventor, artist, and Italian polymath’s life in a new biopic produced by DiCaprio’s production company, Appian Way, with help from the president of the company Jennifer Davisson. DiCaprio co-founded the company that also helped to produce Shutter Island and The Aviator.

The Oscar-winner has talked about his connection to the Italian Renaissance man in an interview with NPR in 2014. “My father tells me that [he and my mother] were on their honeymoon at the Uffizi Gallery in Florence, I believe. They were looking at a da Vinci painting, and allegedly I started kicking furiously while my mother was pregnant. And my father took that as a sign, and I suppose DiCaprio wasn't that far from da Vinci. And so, my dad, being the artist that he is, said, 'That's our boy's name.'"

More: Perpetual bachelor Leonardo DiCaprio is back on the market

With this in mind, who better than to play da Vinci? There aren’t many plot details at the moment, but it was just revealed by Variety that Paramount has won out in a bidding war against Universal for the rights to the film. It will be an adaptation of Walter Isaacson’s biography of Leonardo da Vinci. The author has a plethora of New York Times best sellers for his other biographies of historical figures, like Albert Einstein, Henry Kissinger, Steve Jobs, and Benjamin Franklin. Recently, his 2007 book was adapted for National Geographic’s mini-series Genius, all about Albert Einstein.

With all the cool and exciting things happening surrounding the upcoming biopic, one thing we can’t help but wonder is if Leo will paint the Mona Lisa like one of his French girls…

Officially, Leonardo da Vinci will be released in October 2017.

GoT Just Casually Dropped the Biggest Reveal in the Show's History, NBD

SPOILER ALERT: Please do not make me responsible for spoiling one of the biggest and best moments in Game of Thrones history for you. Don't continue reading this article unless you've watched the latest episode of the show called, "Eastwatch."

More: The Internet Is on Fire After Last Night's Game of Thrones Episode

So we just found out tonight, officially, on Game of Thrones that Jon Snow is not a bastard. He is a legitimate Targaryen. And the news changes EVERYTHING. And, I mean, really nothing. Except my level of feels just went through the roof. And, well, now he really is a king in the blood line sense. Oh, and he has a better claim to the throne than Daenerys. So, yup, "everything" was accurate.

Now, you may remember from last season, we saw Jon's birth thanks to Bran's raven sight. Lyanna, Ned Stark's sister, gave birth to baby Jon in the Tower of Joy after she was "kidnapped" by Rhaegar Targaryen. The semantics of this whole arrangement have always been up for debate.

Lyanna was supposed to marry Robert Baratheon, but it was believed Rhaegar took her against her will and raped her. Other fan theories have suggested the two were in love and actually ran away together. But either way that didn't change Jon Snow's bastard status since Rhaegar was married to another woman, not Lyanna... or was he?

Thanks to Gilly who found High Septon Maynard's detailed accounts of his bowel movements, the game of thrones has officially been changed. Forever.

Not only did High Septon Maynard drop some knowledge about some shit (oh, yes, the puns), but he also just happened to casually write that he provided Rhaegar an annulment from his marriage to Elia, Oberyn's sister, and a new marriage to a different woman that same night. We can safely assume that woman was Lyanna Stark, Ned Stark's sister. Meaning Rhaegar and Lyanna had a legitimate marriage. Meaning Jon Snow is not a bastard. I'm gonna say that again so you can let it really sink in. Jon Snow is not a bastard. He is a true Targaryen, and now has a legitimate claim to rule that not even Daenerys can argue about.

Oh, and thanks to High Septon Maynard's book paired with Bran's visions, we can safely assume that somewhere in the very near future of the show, these pieces are going to be put together. And Jon and the rest of the Westeros world will find out about it.

Until that moment, we the audience get to freak out incessantly online. I'm not even trying to contain the emotions I have over this epic moment in the show, and Twitter is doing a pretty bang-up job of summarizing my feels.

Got a girl who loves fashion but hates shopping with mom? Then KidPik is right up your alley. Aimed at girls 4 through 14, the subscription service allows little girls to set up a fashion profile (with help from parents) on their site. Then the KidPik team curates a box of goodies for her and sends it out. Each box typically has about six to seven items (tops, bottoms and accessories) at an average price of $12.50 an item. You don't pay until you get the box and decide what you want to keep, so you can always send it all back if she's not a fan. The company also offers a 30 percent discount if you decide to keep all the outfits in the box, and a "basics" line that you can buy from separately to complete her wardrobe. Currently KidPiks can be sent monthly, every three months or twice per season (eight boxes a year).

Back-to-school is that special time of year that is filled with flurries of excitement. There are supplies to hunt down, clothes to purchase and adjustments to be made to everyone's life to get kids back on a schedule, right? It's enough to make your head spin, but in that fun kind of way. And kids can sometimes help parents put everything back into perspective during the whole hustle and bustle. They are the ones returning to the classroom, after all — and the rituals we create to surround the moments leading up to the first day of school can become memories that last a lifetime.

In this video, our Hatch kids talk with their parents about the upcoming school year, what needs to be done to get ready and how special some of the back-to-school moments really are for our little ones. Game of Thrones Welcomed [SPOILER] Back, & the Internet Reacted Accordingly

0
0

One of the most lore-packed, jaw-dropping episodes of Game of Thrones aired on Sunday night and believe you me, there's a lot to discuss. Cersei casually dropped the news that she was pregnant again with her brother's baby, Jon assembled a band of rogues to go catch a White Walker (easier said than done) and perhaps the most shocking reveal of them all was the return of Gendry Baratheon, the dead king Robert Baratheon's son, on GoT.

More: Kit Harington & Emilia Clarke's Cutest Moments Together

There had been speculation that Gendry would return when it was believed, days before the episode aired, that he would come back thanks to IMDb accidentally posting actor Joe Dempsie's credits on the Season 7, Episode 5 credit list.

This was concretely confirmed, though, when the big reveal came while Davos and Tyrion were in King's Landing. Tyrion was there to convince Jaime that Cersei should drop her war against Daenerys (momentarily) so they could all unite against the White Walkers. While Tyrion was meeting under the castle with his brother, Davos went into town to check in on dear old Gendry, who apparently made it back from his rowing trip in one piece — a meta joke Davos himself made in the opening moments of the scene.

Davos Gendry GoT Clip

Davos Gendry GoT Clip

Gendry and Davos' meeting was as warm and fuzzy as could possibly be allowed in a brutal show like GoT, but it remains somewhat unclear precisely why Gendry is being brought back into the show's storyline. Yes, he'll prove invaluable to Jon's team as they go into the North and The Wall to get a White Walker and sure, it looks like he and Jon are going to have a sweet bromance as time goes on. But why now? Why would Davos come for him after four seasons away (the last time we saw him, in the blasted rowboat, was in Season 3).

More: GoT Just Casually Dropped the Biggest Reveal in the Show's History, NBD

There may be a deeper purpose for Gendry's return to GoT, but honestly fam, the Internet was too busy losing their minds over the simple fact he had returned to even analyze the situation. No, really. Just look at these fiery reactions to Gendry just casually popping up like it's no big deal.

8 Things to Know About Jason Momoa & Why We're So Obsessed

0
0

Jason Momoa looks like he's one part Viking, one part rock star, and two parts Hawaiian Jesus — but one thing's for certain, he's all hunk. And though his looks are certainly showstopping, they're not the only reason why we love him so much.

He's handsome, he's talented, he's romantic... did we mention he's handsome? I mean, there are a million reasons why we can't get enough of Game of Thrones, and we're always wistfully waiting for Momoa to pop back in.

If you're not as obsessed as we are, it's officially time for you to hop aboard the Momoa train. Here's why.

1. He's got a fire inside

Jason Momoa's Game of Thrones interview

Jason Momoa's Game of Thrones interview

Getting into character for an audition is hard. It's a sterile environment and the people reading with you don't usually give much back. But, dude. Momoa's audition to land the part of Dothraki warlord Khal Drogo in GoT, is crazy good. He performed the Haka, a traditional South Pacific war dance.

"I'm half Hawaiian, and the Haka is a very sacred thing, something your family teaches you," he said in an interview. "My father taught me."

2. He's not afraid to get physical

Why we love Jason Momoa

Momoa is a big dude, but he's super in shape and isn't afraid to throw his weight around. At a Comic-Con presentation for Justice League in July 2017, he interacted with fans as he sat cross-legged on the ground, thrashed his hair around as he showed of his trident, and even smashed his chair on stage to get everyone riled up (in a good way).

He'll also happily take a punch for the sake of a role. To play the title role in Conan, the actor enlisted a friend to help, well, rough him up. "I wanted to make it look like he was more barbaric, so I had a buddy punch me in the nose," he told the Huffington Post in 2011. "He should always have a broken nose, I think — a constant flow of blood coming out of his body somewhere."

3. He's #familygoals

Not only does Momoa make up half of one of Hollywood's and, you know, the planet's hottest couples (his wife is Lisa Bonet), but he also has two healthy, happy, gorgeous children.

On top of that, the hulking six-foot, four-inch star is a total softie when it comes to Bonet. "She's so amazing," he told HuffPost Live. "She's an angel. She's amazing. God bless her." He also said he wrote her part in Road to Paloma specifically with her in mind, because she is his dream girl. "I always wanted to work with her. It's funny [though] — she made me shy." Be still, our hearts!

4. He's a total Renaissance man

Sure, many of Momoa's roles have been tall, dark and silently brooding types — but the actor is far from one-dimensional, though. To maintain his manly physique, Momoa likes to take it outside of the gym: He enjoys rock and ice climbing, snowboarding, hiking, skateboarding, roller hockey and mountain biking. In his down time, he devours books, devotes himself to Buddhist studies and composing Japanese haikus. He also plays guitar and considers spending time with his kids to be one of his favorite pastimes. So cute.

5. He says things like this

Why we love Jason Momoa
Image: Steve Granitz/Getty Images

"I think a man needs to be a man. To hold a woman the way she wants to be held," he told the New York Post. "Just do whatever your woman wants, and you'll be fine." We die.

6. Paying homage to his Hawaiian heritage is important to him

Jason Momoa Insta 4

For Momoa, one of the coolest things about getting to play Aquaman is representing his culture. "There's not too many brown superheroes, so I'm really looking forward to representing the Polynesians, the natives," he said at Walker Stalker Con Panel in Atlanta a couple years back. "My family are some of the greatest water men on earth. I'm not, but I'm going to train with them. But it's really an honor just being a Polynesian."

And the Hawaiian people are proud of their Momoa, too!

Hawaiian Bay Watch

Hawaiian Bay Watch

It's been a hot second since he was on the Hawaiian version of Baywatch (yes, that's a 19-year-old Momoa in the video above), but his old fan base is totally on board with where his career has gone.

7. He's funny

If you follow Momoa on Instagram, you've catch a glimpse of his thunderous laugh and his sense of humor — but are you ready for him to go full comedy? Apparently he's playing freaking Will Ferrell's son in a movie soon. Yes, you read that right. We couldn't be more excited.

Jennifer Aniston Has Some Strong Words for Body-Shamers

Jennifer Aniston is so over what anyone thinks of her, but doesn’t think the criticism is going to stop anytime soon, she told Vogue in a recent interview.

“I think the problem is the tabloids and the gossip columns taking the human body and putting it in a category,” Aniston recently told Vogue. “They’re either fat-shaming, or body-shaming, or childless-shaming.”

More: Why Are We So Fascinated By Celebrity Body-Shaming?

And trust her — she’s heard it all after being in the public eye since the ‘90s. What doesn’t make sense to her is the tendency to focus on celebrities’ faults.

“It’s a weird obsession that people have and I don’t understand exactly why they need to take people who are out there to entertain you, and rip them apart and bully them?” she told Vogue.

And this isn’t the first time Aniston is hitting back. Last year, she published an op-ed in The Huffington Post addressing the longtime speculation and concern over what’s going on in her womb.

“For the record, I am not pregnant. What I am is fed up. I’m fed up with the sport-like scrutiny and body shaming that occurs daily under the guise of ‘journalism,’ the ‘First Amendment’ and ‘celebrity news,’” she wrote.

MoreKelly Clarkson Has No Time for Twitter Body-Shamers

Aniston addressed last year’s powerful statement in the Vogue interview as well. “I couldn’t hear this narrative anymore about being pregnant or not pregnant; you have no idea what is going on personally in our lives and why that is or is not happening and it feels … In my own brain, I’ve shifted my perspective, so who gives a shit?!”

Despite acknowledging how pointless body-shaming is, Aniston admitted that it’s hard for her to deal with and has some words of encouragement for those who face the same criticism.

“If you’re going to walk out and have your nipples showing, or your belly is a little bloated, or you’re not at the weight you want to be — you are perfect no matter what you are and no matter where you are and who cares!”

Jennifer, we couldn’t agree more.

5 Subtle Clues Your Toddler Might Need Glasses

Forget staring lovingly at your partner. As soon as you become a parent, that starry-eyed bliss turns full-force toward your baby. And that moment when they open their eyes and lock eyes with you for the first time? It’s enough to take your breath away. But it’s important to not only gaze at your little one, but also be mindful of the health of their beautiful, one-of-a-kind optics.

More: 5 Ways Your Kids' Favorite Toys Actually Have Scientific Benefits

August is Children’s Eye Health and Safety Month — the perfect excuse (or, ahem, reminder) to get your child’s eyes checked out. Here’s your quick cheat sheet on children’s eye care along with some clear signs they might be struggling with vision.

Dr. Diana R. Shiba, ophthalmologist at Kaiser Permanente in Southern California, says, as a general rule of sight, basic eye and vision screenings should happen at birth, during infancy and into preschool years. These appointments, which are usually coordinated by a pediatrician or a family physician, might include a slew of tests performed right in the office. When the child is cooperative and verbal, a formal acuity screening is recommended, which might include some instruments and questions to see through your child’s eyes.

If you’re trying to gauge your child’s sight but you’re not exactly sure what to look for, Shiba has some reassuring words: This is normal. Also, it’s normal for a newborn to have mild hyperopia (far-sightedness), which might alarm you, but not your ophthalmologist. "This is why it is important that parents maintain regular follow-ups with their pediatrician, who can refer the baby or child to an optometrist, ophthalmologist or even a pediatric ophthalmologist when appropriate,” says Shiba. "There are some possible warning signs that parents should be aware of, though, and these signs may become more noticeable as the child ages."

1. Your toddler is squinting

If you have glasses yourself, you have two worldviews: what it looked like before and what it looked like after glasses. In the pre-clear vision stage, you probably squinted to see nearly everything — from the television to a friend standing right next to you. If you’re noticing your toddler practicing this same behavior, Shiba recommends seeking a professional opinion for a more thorough investigation. "While squinting may be from something minor like eye irritation, it could also be a sign that the child is compensating for blurry vision and may be helped with a pair of glasses," she says.

2. Your baby’s eyes drift away

Considering they just spent the better part of nine months cozy and warm, protected in your tummy, life outside the womb is a culture shock for newborns. Shiba says it’s common for infants to occasionally cross or drift their eyes. However, if it becomes frequent or lasts longer, especially after they’re 4 months old, she recommends a thorough checkup. "Eye movement disorders could be a sign that a baby or child needs glasses, but they may also be a sign of a more serious eye or health condition that may require additional medical or even surgical management,” she explains. "Prompt referral to and evaluation by an ophthalmologist is also important because the visual system of a child, especially before the age of 8 to 9, is still rapidly developing, and disorders that are not corrected at this age could lead to permanent visual loss in adulthood."

3. Your toddler prefers one eye over the other

Next time you’re reading a book to your toddler or playing along with the new imaginary game they created, pay attention to how they look at objects, toys or even at you. Shiba explains that when a toddler prefers to look at everything with one eye over the other, it could indicate a need for glasses. You can evaluate their sight with an easy test. "If one eye sees more clearly than the other, infants or toddlers often become upset when the ‘good’ eye is covered and prevents viewing versus when the opposite eye is covered,” she suggests. If your kid has this reaction, she encourages parents to see a specialist ASAP.

4. Your child tilts their head to look at things

Similar to preferring the left eye instead of the right, if your kid tends to turn or tilt their head constantly when trying to look at something, Shiba suggests a follow-up exam to determine the cause. This particular symptom could be an indicator of more dangerous conditions, so the sooner, the better. “The infant or child may have blurry vision, double vision or possibly an even more serious medical or surgical condition causing the child to prefer to look at objects from a certain gaze direction,” she adds.

5. Your child is tearing up — a lot

Though seasonal allergies or a temporary clogged tear duct are no great cause for concern, Shiba explains that excessive tearing can give you a clue about vision issues your child is trying to cope with. "This may be a sign of a more urgent problem, like an object in the eye, excessive rubbing or eye strain and a need for glasses, to name a few," she explains. "Though rare, it could also be a vision-threatening condition like pediatric glaucoma."

Bottom line? If you’re wondering if your kid needs glasses, get them to a doctor for a professional diagnosis.

Florida County Bans Homework, & Parents Cheer

Thirty-one public elementary schools in Florida's Ocala Marion County are just saying no to homework.

More: These Kids Will Give You a New Perspective on Back-to-School

"It’s no traditional homework, no worksheets, no endless pages of workbooks. Instead, our children are reading aloud with their parents at least 20 minutes a night,” Schools Superintendent Heidi Maier said of the change in policy to Today. Sign us non-Floridians up, please.

According to Maier, the county based the major decision on research that suggested homework is not actually benefiting young students.

Not all parents are sure how to feel about the new policy — especially those like Heather Ergle who have children who enjoy doing homework (a creature only slightly less rare than a Yeti or a unicorn).

“The homework is kind of a little window into his day," Ergle said of her son, Lake, who is one who actually likes doing homework.

“I think that homework is good to have,” Lake said. Bless his heart.

Many experts agree with Lake, saying homework teaches responsibility and time-management. Some studies also suggest that kids who do homework tend to do better on tests — but still, the debate over the value of homework rages on in families and in schools.

Many families with children in the no-homework elementary schools in Ocala Marion County are feeling relief after hearing the new policy. Lauren Roger and her two sons are completely exhausted by the battle that is homework and are happy to see it go. “Homework has been a struggle. We had nights that we'd be sitting at the kitchen table with tears,” Roger said.

The school district has suggested to parents that they use the extra time in the evenings to read with their children. That's nice in theory, but we're betting most families will be just as happy crashing earlier at night (or spending more time getting cozy with their screens).

"For us, it was like a happy dance here in the kitchen,” Roger said.

We're wondering if this homework ban will catch on in other states (including ours). We might be doing a happy dance too.

7 Things You Should Be Paying Attention to in an Interview

0
0

By Jennifer Bewley:

One of the best pieces of advice I received about interviewing was to treat it like any other business deal. Difficult to do? You bet. In our excitement over a new opportunity, it can be easy to overlook certain red flags.

Pay attention to these seven things during the interview process to keep your emotions in check and make the best decision for you.

1. Industry choice

I asked a high-profile CEO why he chose to work at his company. He told me when he realized he was ready to be a CEO, he had a consultancy do a study on what makes CEOs successful. The No. 1 factor was choosing the right industry. Be sure to ask a lot of questions about industry and competitive dynamics, because growth and opportunity covers a lot of strategy missteps and mistakes.

2. Cohesive growth plan

Businesses that are transparent tend to have defined strategies and goals, which makes it easier for employees to thrive. If the people, at any level in the company, you are interviewing with don’t know the growth strategy, consider it a red flag and accept the likelihood that teams will be pulling in different, usually self-interested, directions.

3. Follow the money

Companies talk a good game, but they vote with their resources. Make sure you understand the company’s investment priorities. A good friend of mine works in a multi-brand company. While his brand is recognized as having potential, it's only 10 percent of the company's revenue. His plans and resources are often sidelined to serve the larger brand creating endless frustration.

4. Turnover, turnover, turnover

Professionals vote with their resources too. Turnover at all levels is a critical culture gauge — a measure that can be calculated from financial data, LinkedIn data and other sources. The implied turnover range we’ve seen at tech companies — 4 to 23 percent. Can you imagine what it’s like to work for a company when one-quarter of their employees walk out every year?

Senior management stability is important to all employees too. Every time a new executive arrives, they have to make their mark, which can entail strategy shifts, reorganization, turnover and reallocation of spending. Map out who reports to the CEO and how long their predecessors were at the company.

5. Assess your role’s potential (& your boss's too)

Jason Brevard, senior engineering recruiter at Professional Outlook, recommends research that creates a roadmap of where a position could take you.

“If you’re considering a job change, I recommend utilizing LinkedIn to search in keywords for the specific job title and company you’re applying to. The search results can be filtered to show if they hold that title currently or have in the past,” said Brevard. “By selecting ‘past,' it will show you how others have progressed in their careers who've held that position. You can further dissect if they're still with the company, how long they held that role before being promoted or moving on, did they move on internally or externally, did they have to relocate to be promoted, has it proven to be a worthy stepping stone for those who've held that role? That exercise takes less than 15 minutes and is free to basic users while providing a plethora of decision-making data.”

While you are at it, check out your potential boss’ standing too. Are they on the fast track, or have they been in their position too long?

6. What are they not saying

Message discipline is an art that most companies' practice, which means it's more illustrative to look at what they are not saying or where there are inconsistencies. We recently investigated a company that only mentioned marketing sparingly while heaping praise on the product team. When the reference checks came through, marketing was indeed an afterthought and fighting for relevance within the company.

7. Preparation & respect

How many times have companies said people are our most valuable asset? You should assess if they lived up to it in the interview process. Did the interviewers show up prepared? Did they know enough about you to ask thoughtful questions? Were they respectful of your time? If you are treated poorly when the company is putting their best foot forward, how will you be treated when you are just another team member? As Maya Angelou said, "When someone shows you who they are, believe them the first time.”

In a new announcement, it's been revealed that Rhimes is leaving the confines of cable in a move from ABC, where she's had immense success, to Netflix. Her most popular shows — Grey'sScandal and How to Get Away With Murder — and their showrunners will stay on ABC, as well as the Grey's Anatomy spinoff the network is currently working on. But when it comes to her plans for future shows, Rhimes will be dropping them on Netflix, which sounds totally exciting for Shondaland diehards.

In a personal statement, Rhimes had some kind words for ABC despite her departure from the network.

"I could not have asked for a better home to begin my career. I continue to be grateful to work with so many talented people," she wrote. But she added that moving to Netflix is part of "my vision for myself as a storyteller and for the evolution of my company," and that the streaming service has become a "fearless space for creators."

She concluded by saying, "The future of Shondaland at Netflix has limitless possibilities."

It sounds like there are no hard feelings surrounding Rhimes' decision to move. ABC also released a statement, saying, "We’re so proud of the work we’ve done with Shonda and Betsy throughout our long and productive relationship. The Shondaland imprint will always be an important part of ABC Studios and we wish them all the best in this new endeavor."

Rhimes' stories have previously felt limited by appearing on a major TV network. It makes sense. Take, for instance, instances in Grey's Anatomy like when a character gets shot and all other characters can say is "What the hell?" when it's pretty obvious (to me at least) that stronger words are needed. A move to Netflix would give room for those stronger reactions to happen.

We personally can't wait to see what Rhimes will come up with without the bounds of traditional TV holding her back.

Kim Zolciak-Biermann Is Struggling With Emotions as Son Heads to Kindergarten

Don't Be Tardy star Kim Zolciak-Biermann — a mother of six — gave Instagram all the feels on Monday when she shared a heartfelt post about her son Kash beginning kindergarten.

Kim Z

"1st day of Kindergarten," she captioned the photo (also featuring son KJ and husband Kroy Biermann). "@kashbiermann did great getting out of the car…and as soon as he did I LOST it. My hubby and @arianabiermann were so sweet talking me down!" [sic]
Kim admitted she was less worried about older son KJ adjusting to first grade:

"Kj started 1st grade Thursday of last week (and I’m surprised he isn’t president of his school yet) lol but my nugget Kash is a bit more sensitive and shy," she said. "There is something about boys that just gets me. THANK YOU for all of your sweet comments through all my tears last night I didn’t feel as crazy knowing so many of you are going through the same. Love all of you. Have a fantastic day and I’ll let you know if I hop in my car and go pick him up." [sic]

It's not surprising that Kim is feeling extra protective of Kash as he heads back to school. The past few months have been brutal for the little boy, who was hospitalized after being bitten badly by a dog. She posts regularly about her kids on her Instagram feed.

"The last 14hrs of our lives has been a living nightmare," Kim posted at the time of Pash's dog bite. "My sweet @kashbiermann was bit by a dog and had very traumatic injuries. I’ve never prayed so hard, or been so scared in my life." [sic]

Fortunately, Kash has recovered, but Kim admitted it was a terrible ordeal for the family.

"Kash has taught me so much these last 3 weeks. Who would have thought a 4 year old could teach a 38 (almost 39 on Friday) year old so much?" she said on Instagram.

Kim is also mom to Brielle, 20; Ariana, 15; and twins Kaia and Kane, 3. She'll be making a return to Bravo's Real Housewives of Atlanta this fall — if she can survive the back-to-school crying jags. We're just glad to hear Kash made a full recovery — kindergarten, we're betting, will be a piece of cake for this little guy, if not for his mom.

Gwen Stefani Throws Harry Potter Themed Bash for Son Zuma

Who knew Gwen Stefani was such a Harry Potter fan?

Majorly cool cat, fashionista, and rock star Gwen Stefani just got even cooler in our eyes. The singer and The Voice star threw a Harry Potter-themed bash on Sunday for her son Zuma, who's turning nine. And it was everything you'd expect a Hogwarts celebration to be (minus the constant lurking dangers like Deatheaters and massive snakes and paralysis spells).

Stefani documented the event in video clips and photos on her Instagram Stories feed. The party included excellent life-sized cutouts of key characters like Harry himself and Severus Snape. So. Cool. There were also flags emblazoned with the emblems of the four Hogwarts houses, an awesome fruit display with an owl created from pineapple and melons (!), and a big ol' cake with a Sorting Hat on top.

A very happy Zuma appeared in his mom's videos and photos wearing his usual spectacles (Harry would approve).

One thing Zuma's party had that Hogwarts has yet to install? A water slide.

Zuma is Stefani's middle child with Gavin Rossdale. The two exes also have sons Kingston, 11, and Apollo, 3.

Stefani has (quite famously) moved on with her Voice co-star Blake Shelton, who appears regularly in her Instagram feed, and seems to be as sweet on her boys as he is on her.

We're just wondering if he was a Harry Potter fan before Stefani schooled him. (Our guess? Not so much.)

Netflix's Naked Is Trying to Be the New Groundhog Day — Did It Work?

0
0

Netflix's newest original movie, Naked, is a bold comedy focusing on Rob Anderson (played by comedic actor Marlon Wayans), a well-meaning dude who finds himself repeating the same hour on his wedding day over and over. The catch? He's reliving this hour while he's butt naked, and he's got to try and make it to the chapel before he loses the love of his life, Megan (Regina Hall).

If this whole "repeating the same hour over and over" plot detail sounds familiar, that might be because it bears a striking resemblance to the classic comedy Groundhog Day, famously starring Bill Murray as curmudgeonly weatherman Phil Connors, who finds himself doomed to repeat Groundhog Day. Naked plucks the time-repetition element, ditches the existential dread and really plays up the comedic possibilities such a plot device would offer. It risks turning off fans of the original film, but trust me, if you keep an open mind, you can't go wrong with Naked.

The basic setup of Naked is pretty much Groundhog Day

All right, let's get this out of the way: Wayans is no Bill Murray. Wayans doesn't turn in a bad performance, but it's admittedly difficult to get images of Murray out of your head while watching Naked if only because the essential plot twists are the same between the films. That said, Wayans is hilarious, as expected — hello, this is the star of White Chicks, one of the greatest films of our time.

Wayans is so earnest and well-meaning as Rob, even when his character drops the ball in the film and finds himself in a weird position, that it's tough not to be charmed by Naked. He does a damn good job performing while "naked" most of the time (Wayans probably wore a modesty garment to give the illusion of nudity while not being totally nude). He delivers jokes like he's improving them: with total ease and panache. Even when he needs to play it straight, as he does when he and Hall share some of their more tender scenes, he's firing on all cylinders.

His isn't the only great performance in Naked, either. Just like Groundhog Day, Naked brings together a wide variety of great actors to make the magic happen. Hall, Scott Foley, Dennis Haysbert, Loretta Devine, Eliza Coupe and even Brian freaking McKnight all show up and bring their A game. Seriously, Devine and Foley have some of the most rib-tickling scenes wherein they're singing a lot of spiritual hymns or practicing their street-fighting skills, respectively. It's amazing.

More: TV Shows & Movies Coming & Leaving Netflix in August

Here's where things get dicey

OK, Naked isn't perfect. Things can get frustrating when Rob is clearly just doing something silly and time-wasting, like chilling with McKnight (who plays a version of himself in the film) or randomly meeting up with his mother at a hotel bar instead of fighting his way to the church where he's supposed to marry Megan. It's a stretch of logic, and it's during some of these random diversions that the energy falters. And don't even get me started on the very odd twist wherein Rob talks with a sex worker as it relates to his ending up naked in an elevator on his wedding day. Yikes, that is some bad storytelling.

But it surprisingly works, even when it's weird

Naked Still 2

Some of the weirder moments are what make Naked so enjoyable. Rob breakdancing in a robe for a formidable bike gang so he can catch a ride to the church and his numerous attempts to find the right outfit or risk getting thrown out of the church by his soon-to-be father-in-law are among the more slapstick moments that shine brightly. While there's no examination of the existential meaning of repeating the same day or hour over and over again, there's plenty of mild jokes that usually hit their mark. They add a pleasantly absurd layer to Naked that makes the Netflix original all the more enjoyable.

Seriously, go watch Naked on Netflix ASAP. It may not be as layered as Groundhog Day, but it's a damn fine riff on this classic formula.

Olivia Wilde & Lena Dunham Speak Out Against White Supremacy

Updated Aug. 14, 9:30 a.m. PT: Lena Dunham has joined Olivia Wilde in speaking out against the weekend's events in Charlottesville, Virginia, with a series of Instagram posts about white supremacy. Given the fact that she has posted a series of photos, each with very strong commentary about the events that happened over the weekend of Aug. 12, Dunham appears to be one of the most vehemently vocal celebs raising their voice about this situation.

Her first post, just a black background with white text reading, "All white people are responsible for the upholding of white supremacy and for the fall of it," with comments disabled.

A second post showed Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. alongside a caption that read, "Keep this dream alive." Comments were also disabled on that post.

Original story:

In light of the horrific events in Charlottesville, Virginia, celebrities have taken hard stances against the blatant tone of Nazism and white nationalism that stood out during the "Unite the Right" rally that took place on the University of Virginia's campus. One of the most vocal celebrities is Olivia Wilde, who shared a picture of an essay written by her mother, who is currently running for Congress in Virginia.

The events in Charlottesville involved a march on the University of Virginia’s campus Friday night ahead of a "Unite the Right" rally on Saturday. Among the more notably disturbing moments that made headlines from the event as it unfolded over the weekend was a car driving into a crowd of counterprotesters, and a helicopter crash resulted in a total of three deaths and over a dozen critical injuries. President Donald Trump reportedly refused to condemn the white nationalists, saying that violence and hatred are on “many sides.”

In response, Wilde shared a picture on her Instagram that read, “Let’s stand up for the targets of the hate groups who have descended on Charlottesville. This weekend, spend money at a minority-owned business. Give generously to a charity that supports immigrants or African-Americans. Encourage law enforcement to guard the rights of everyone in the streets, including the counter-protesters and the potential victims of the alt-right. What I’m seeing is unvarnished Nazism. ‘Blood and soil’ mixed with weapons is a terrible echo of the past.”

Wilde’s caption for the photo reads, “Message to the people of Charlottesville, from my mother, Leslie Cockburn, who is running for Congress in VA.”

The message is not only important to continue the fight for human rights, it is also a call for the people of Virginia to do something about their representation in Washington.

We Did a Back-to-School Survey, & the Results Were Fascinating

0

Because we're all scientific and stuff, we decided to poll 100 kids between the ages of 12 and 23 from our Hatch program about back-to-school topics. So if you've ever wondered what your Gen Z and young millennial kids are thinking when it comes to going back to school after a long summer, well, keep reading.

Guess which group is excited about hitting the books? If you guessed neither, well done! Millennials (92 percent) and the slightly less gregarious Gen Z (82 percent) are most excited about catching up with classmates.

More: Must-Know Tips for Planning Your Back-to-School Shopping Trip

Young millennials and Gen Zers are excited about heading back to school for these reasons:

  1. Seeing friends and classmates (89 percent). Well, duh.

  2. Having more freedom (61 percent). Easy there, you wild things.

  3. Taking new classes (56 percent). Academics! Our faith in humanity is restored.

  4. Participating in extracurricular activities (47 percent). Apparently, choir practice and soccer beats mowing the lawn or a summer job.

  5. Having a set schedule or routine (47 percent). Who knew today's kids liked routine?

  6. Making new friends (45 percent). Never a bad thing.

  7. Going back-to-school shopping (44 percent). Ah, the smell of new erasers and notebooks. It still makes us swoon.

  8. Dorm or apartment life (42 percent). That's all fine and good until there's a passed-out frat boy stretched across your doorway.

  9. Wearing new clothes (42 percent). New duds are always fun.

  10. Getting new school supplies (38 percent). Oh, yes.

And then there's the not-so-awesome stuff about going back to school:

  1. Taking tests (78 percent). Who loves being tested on precalculus first thing in the morning?

  2. Waking up early (76 percent). Gen X couldn't agree more.

  3. Doing homework (75 percent). Fair enough.

  4. Taking classes (24 percent). You know, the whole "school" part of going back to school.

  5. Eating cafeteria food (13 percent). We're surprised this one wasn't higher on the list.

How about back-to-school fashion? Unsurprisingly, both millennials and Gen Zers are hugely influenced by fashion trends they're seeing on Instagram. Millennials also steal styles from their buddies more often than Gen Zers (84 percent vs. only 38 percent). Both groups say they think it's way more important to be on trend than to be unique. (Come on, you guys, don't be fashion sheep. We, the sweatpants-and-yoga-pants nations of Gen X and older millennials, have higher hopes for you.)

Neither Gen Zers or millennials love the brick-and-mortar store shopping thing. In fact, 17 percent of millennials we polled only shop online. Gen Z will occasionally deign to step inside a real store (none of them claimed to exclusively shop online).

As for where they like to shop, Urban Outfitters and H&M were among the overall favorites, while American Eagle and Levi's were tops for jeans.

Makeup is big with both demographics, with Sephora, Urban Decay, Maybelline and Tarte all getting more than 40 percent approval ratings from the young people we polled.

A whopping half of teens like to post pictures of their fashion and makeup on Instagram (we're soooo shocked — not). Why, you ask? "If I really feel great in an outfit, my confidence shows, and it's nice to post about times when you feel great," said one respondent.

But others are more selective when it comes to sharing. "I send pictures to my close friends on Snapchat, but I don't show all of my social media friends."

Um, no, neither do we. I mean, some things are, like, totally private [immediately deletes dorky Gen X Facebook post about new outfit from Target].

Thomas Rhett & Lauren Akins Are the Cutest Little Family in Country Music

Honestly, we've been in love with Thomas Rhett and his wife, Lauren Akins, ever since they showed up on our radar at the 2016 American Country Music Awards — and now, there is even more of them to love. Yup, baby Akins is here!

Lauren Akins baby announcement

"Our baby girl is here," Akins captions an adorable photo on Instagram. "Sweet Ada James Akins came into the world at 10:28 last night after almost 36 hours of labor (only Jesus got me through that-& she is sooo worth it). She weighs 7 pounds 3 ounces and is so stinking cute I just can't take it! We are all doing well now, just resting. Thank y'all for your prayers-she is a miracle and God is so good. Thomas Rhett and I are so I love with her."

We may have thought they couldn't get any more adorable than they were at the '16 CMAs when Rhett took home the award for Single Record of the Year for "Die a Happy Man," but we were totally wrong. This sweet duo just keeps growing on us.

Here's why.

1. They just adopted a little girl

In fall 2016, Rhett and Akins began the process of adopting a child from Africa, and in May 2017, they finally brought their baby girl home.

"YALL... Our baby girl is hommmmeeeeee," Akins captioned a sweet set of photos on Instagram. "Thank you Jesus for bringing our family together on the same continent finally :) little cutie Willa Gray Akins came home yesterday after completely stealing our hearts in Uganda over a year ago & we're sooooo happy we just can't stand it."

And what does Willa Gray think of the new arrival?

"Willa Gray is so excited to finally have a baby sister," Akins wrote on Instagram.

2. Their pregnancy announcement was adorbs

Just a couple of months after their adoption announcement, they discovered that Akins was pregnant with Ada.

The couple took to Instagram in February to share the news.

"OH BABY! actually...BABIES!" Akins captioned a pic. "Our hearts are exploding with happiness for y'all to meet our new baby who we are bringing home from Africa soon who is also going to have a little brother or sister because, SURPRISE! there's a sweet baby in my belly too."

If that isn't the sweetest thing you've ever heard, we don't know what is.

3. They've known each other since first grade

thomas rhett

thomas rhett

Just in case you didn't think this pair could get any cuter, get this: Rhett and Akins have known each other since they were around 6 years old! Ain't that a song just waiting to be written.

4. They dated when they were 15...

thomas rhett

thomas rhett

...but they broke up. Rhett told Taste of Country that he and his wife, then Lauren Gregory, dated for six months when they were 15. Sadly, though, it didn't work out. They stayed friends and wound up dating other people. "I don’t think she really noticed me till we were 16,” Rhett said. He then added, “When I heard that she had ended her other relationship, I moved in for the kill. We kissed, and that was it.”

5. They got engaged around Christmas

thomas rhett

thomas rhett

Rhett and Akins got engaged in December 2011. Rhett popped the question at Akins' favorite Nashville restaurant, Giovanni's. “There was a [wine] bottle, and with a silver Sharpie, I wrote, ‘Marry me?’ on the bottle, and she wrote ‘Well, duh, yes’ on the bottle,” Rhett told radio station Y108. “Somebody cued 'The Way You Look Tonight' by Frank Sinatra, and we danced in this little cigar room. It was pretty awesome.”

6. They wed in October 2012 outside of Nashville, Tennessee

thomas rhett

thomas rhett

And yes, there's a video of their wedding. Dying.

7. Akins keeps Rhett humble

thomas rhett

thomas rhett

Just because Rhett is a country superstar, it doesn't mean it's all about him. “I’ve even come home a lot of the time and talked about what I did on the road and what songs I’m gonna cut, and then I realized I haven’t even asked my wife how her day was,” Rhett told Taste of Country. “So I think this business can be very consuming for some people. But thank goodness that my wife is there to call me out every single time, so my head shrinks a little bit.”

8. Rhett made a YouTube video of their fairy tale

thomas rhett

thomas rhett

Well, if you watch the video, you'll see that it wasn't all a fairy tale. The pair spent a long time being friends while Rhett tried to win her over. But, in the end, love prevailed. So cute!

9. Rhett had to persuade Akins to be in his video

thomas rhett

thomas rhett

Rhett's "Die a Happy Man" video features his wife (and himself) in Hawaii, being all loved up. However, Akins wasn't super keen on being in the video at first. "It took a lot of convincing to get her to do it," Rhett told Billboard, despite the fact that she's the inspiration behind the hit song. "We were in the car, and Tim McGraw's 'Just to See You Smile' came on," Akins recalled. "I was like, 'Babe, people don't write songs like this anymore. It's so sweet — it just melts your heart. Write a song like that! About something besides whiskey, beer or taking a girl home in a big truck.'" And thus, "Die a Happy Man" was born.

How adorable is this couple?!
