Here’s What You Need to Know About Baby-Friendly Hospitals

0
0

So you’re making a birth plan, and you’ve decided to deliver in a hospital. Great — cross that off your list. But wait. Do you want a hospital or a baby-friendly hospital? Aren’t all hospitals baby-friendly? Does baby-friendly mean mom-friendly? What can you expect from a baby-friendly hospital experience?

While most hospitals include maternity wards and even birthing centers, those with the designation “baby-friendly” are specifically focused on mother-baby bonding and infant feeding, particularly breastfeeding.

More: Seriously, moms put some really weird things in their birth plans

“Hospitals and birth centers play a critical role in helping women transition to motherhood,” says Melissa LaHann, the founder of LatchPal. “The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is wonderful because it provides an outpouring of support for moms beginning their breastfeeding journey.”

The Baby-Friendly Hospital Initiative is a project of the World Health Organization and United Nations Children’s Fund began in 1991 to promote breastfeeding. Hospitals implementing the Ten Steps to Successful Breastfeeding are given the designation of baby-friendly, which last for five years, and there’s a rather rigorous survey and data collection required to receive and maintain the recognition. Eighteen percent of U.S. births happen in baby-friendly hospitals, of which there are currently 350 across the country.

We know that breastfeeding can be complicated, painful and frustrating, so if you give birth in a baby-friendly hospital, a lactation consultant will materialize before you soon after delivery since according to the Ten Steps, breastfeeding should begin one hour after the baby is born.

In addition to prohibiting the baby from ingesting anything other than breast milk and showing mothers how to maintain lactation when they leave the hospital, baby-friendly hospitals facilitate immediate and prolonged skin-to-skin contact as well as “rooming in,” in which mother and baby spend 24 hours a day together (or as much time as possible) as opposed to the baby spending time in a separate nursery.

If you’re anxious about breastfeeding or just want to get a jump on it as soon as you can, a baby-friendly hospital might be the right choice for you. But of course, it’s not as simple as that. One of the tenets of the baby-friendly initiative is that other substitutes for breastfeeding, like infant formula, cannot be marketed to new mothers. In other words, if you were thinking you might leave the hospital with some free formula samples to supplement your nursing, that’s probably not going to happen at a baby-friendly facility.

More: Birth Center vs. Hospital

There are, however, misconceptions about baby-friendly hospitals, particularly in regard to the stringent nature of the Ten Steps. That rule about not offering formula to new moms might not be so hard and fast.

“The baby’s health, nutrition and weight gain is the main priority and something we closely monitor. We want to ensure the baby is receiving the proper nutrition for a healthy start in life,” says Dr. Ralph Dauterive, an OB-GYN and vice president of medical affairs at Ochsner Medical Center in Baton Rouge, a baby-friendly hospital, in response to the charge that such hospitals never provide formula to moms who don’t breastfeed or who are having trouble.

Emily Silver, a nurse practitioner with Boston NAPS, a group of nurses who assist families with new babies, says that she does see mothers experience difficulty with some aspects of the baby-friendly hospitals, such as having no access to nurseries or pacifiers, but also that hard limits aren’t necessarily hard.

“Mothers may undergo a long labor with hours of pushing or a cesarean section, and if a mother is extremely exhausted or feels unsafe caring for her baby at night, then the nursery is incredibly important and appropriate," Silver says. "Our company in general practices that once milk supply is well established, it is OK to use a pacifier if desired and if the infant is looking to soothe after a feed.”

In spite of the fact that some baby-friendly facilities do practice care when enacting the Ten Steps, it still doesn’t mean it’s the right birth option for everyone. Ashley Koeppen, a labor and delivery nurse at Advocate Sherman Hospital in Elgin, Illinois, a baby-friendly hospital, says that while the support for breastfeeding is necessary, it “does not equal mom-friendly. With the pressure to succeed in breastfeeding while not always having adequate assistance outside of the hospital combined with society’s’ pressures on what makes a good mom comes increased risk for postpartum depression and anxiety.”

Still not sure whether or not to go baby-friendly? Julia Wang, head of digital content for The Bump (sister site to The Knot) and an expert on birth and parenting, suggests that expecting folks do their homework and visit hospitals, baby-friendly and otherwise, before deciding where they want to give birth. (You can find a list of baby-friendly hospitals here.)

“Ask all your questions,” Wang advises. “That way, you can evaluate how sensitive the hospital will be to your individual needs and if the baby-friendly structure will be beneficial to you.”

8 Ways to Use Highlighter on Your Face

When you know how to properly use highlighter, it’s kind of God’s gift. There’s nothing we love more than a beauty product that can pull double duty — except for a product that can work even harder than that. Highlighter is one of those wonderful gems, there for us when we need it in practically every capacity.

Working to give you a glow and make you look more awake, highlighter is a wonderful way to infuse a little bit of life into your look. To get the most of this beauty must-have, we’re walking you through exactly where to use it.

Under the brow bone

Apply highlighter just under your brow bone, but above the crease in your eyelid, to give the illusion of larger eyes.

Apple of the cheek

If you’re going for glowing skin — as opposed to a slightly more contoured look — apply a small dot of highlighter in the center of the apple of your cheek over blush.

Bridge of the nose

This works especially well if you’re working to contour your nose a bit. Apply highlighter along the bridge of your nose, and gently blend foundation a shade or two darker than your natural skin tone on the sides to make your nose appear to be slimmer.

Inner corner of the eye

The oldest trick in the book for looking awake when you’re working on three hours of sleep? Add just a pinch of highlighter to the inner corner of your eyes to brighten up otherwise dark areas.

Diagonal along the cheekbone

For a bit of definition in your cheekbones, apply highlighter in a diagonal line from just beneath the center of your eye socket up toward your hairline and blend.

Cupid’s bow

Give your lipstick a really clean look by applying highlighter on your Cupid’s bow using a concealer brush.

Center of your eyelid

Just a touch of highlighter in the center of your eyelid will simultaneously make your eyes look bigger and more awake. Win-win!

Mix it with your moisturizer

Mix a liquid highlighter with your moisturizer for an all over glow across your entire face.

Halo Top gets a lot of attention for their delicious nectar of the gods that may look and taste like ice cream but is somehow not all that bad for us.

This low-calorie and high-protein ice cream has a bit of a cult following and boasts 240 to 360 calories a pint, but as good as it is, there’s never been a ton of variety in the line — and people who like Halo tend to want a lot more of it.

“Our fans wanted more flavors — and we did too. We made a list of which flavors they wanted the most and figured out how we could make them the Halo Top way. Making new flavors is always fun and we absolutely can’t wait for these to hit shelves,” said founder and CEO of Halo Top, Justin Woolverton, in a press release.

Exciting fans everywhere, Halo Top just announced seven new flavors to add to their current 17 varieties of ice cream: Pancakes & Waffles, Cinnamon Roll, Mochi Green Tea, Rainbow Swirl, Candy Bar, Chocolate Covered Banana and Caramel Macchiato.

We're excited too.

What exactly is inside these new flavors? Pancakes & Waffles promises  “buttery pieces of pancakes and waffles, plus pockets of maple syrup” and the Cinnamon Roll has “chunks of doughy cinnamon rolls” and “cinnamon icing swirls.” Um, yum. Perhaps best of all, the Candy Bar will have “crunchy peanuts, layers of chocolate and caramel swirls.” There’s even an Instagram-ready Rainbow Swirl flavor.

Clearly, Halo fans are excited about all the flavors, old and new.

5 True Stories of Sisters Who Were Pregnant at the Same Time

It’s the most sincere love-hate relationship. Your sister is one of your dearest friends, but she’s also the one person in your life who can drive you absolutely, totally, completely up the wall. As you add more and more candles to your birthday cakes and go through similar lifestyle changes — like moving, getting promoted, finding your lifelong partners and more — your friendship may become less adversarial and more peaceful. One of the greatest adventures a dynamic sister duo can share together is the experience of becoming moms. In honor of National Sisters Day on Aug. 6 (yep, it exists), we’re celebrating sisterhood, motherhood and love by sharing these sweet tales of sisters (and sisters-in-law) who were pregnant at the same time.

When Caroline Smith discovered she was pregnant in September, she couldn’t wait to share the happy news with her immediate family. The announcement gave her sister, Angela Fink, baby-fever, and she started trying to start her own family right away. Sadly, Smith lost her baby to a miscarriage just one week later. “Lo and behold, Angela is quite fertile and got pregnant really quickly after. For the first 12 weeks she didn't share the news with our family because she wanted to be sensitive to my miscarriage,” Smith said.

However, on Christmas Eve, Fink and her husband entered the family room wearing matching shirts announcing they were 13 weeks along: "Hers read, ‘Eating for two,’ and his said, ‘Drinking for three,’” Smith said. At this celebration, Smith was overcome with emotions because she had only found out she was pregnant again three days prior. “Angela came over, probably thinking that I was crying because I was sad, but I told her that I was expecting! I had planned on telling my husband on Christmas morning, so, needless to say, he was quite shocked when he heard me tell Angela I was pregnant,” Smith shared. “It was a whirlwind of emotions, and our babies are only going to be one month apart!”

While distance can separate families, the beauty of technology is that it allows sisters to keep each other up-to-date on all their adventures and exciting feats at all times. When Kate McGuffin found out she was pregnant, she shared the news with her younger sister, Elizabeth Simmons, via Skype. Little did McGuffin know her sister would soon be playing copycat. “Fast-forward several months, and we were having a similar conversation, once again on Skype, and my sister announced they were also expecting!” McGuffin shared. “I gave birth to my son River in January, and her son Jack was born in May.”

McGuffin calls the experience of being pregnant with her sister "priceless" and "special." “We shared tips on absolutely everything from how to deal with killer heartburn to how to dress the bump and what the best brand of diapers were,” she said. “We encouraged and supported each other in our decision to have a natural birth and had such a special birth experience bringing two healthy little boys into the world. Now we are looking forward to watching our boys grow up together and have the same special relationship we have as sisters.”

When Meghan Ely found out she was expecting her first child, she knew she wanted to share the news in a clever way with her family. They waited until it was her father-in-law’s birthday and came up with a game plan. “We made stickers for our two young nieces to wear to announce they were the ‘big’ and ‘bigger’ cousins and planed to give them the stickers as they made their way into the dinner,” Ely shared. However, as she handed the sticker to the oldest niece, Mia, letting her in on the secret, Mia said that her mom was expecting too. Ely corrected her, thinking she was just confused and she continued on her mission. “The girls made their way to dinner, where everyone started screaming, until Mia once again declared that ‘Mommy is having a baby too,’” she shared. “Dead silence ensued until we realized that my sister-in-law, Kendra was also pregnant and planning to announce that night. We all had a big laugh, while my mother-in-law gleefully made plans to buy more Pack 'n Plays.”

Katie Brandenburg Stallons and Lindsay Brandenburg Wiley found out they were expecting their second children together, with due dates only weeks apart. It might seem like they planned it. Especially when you consider they had their first children only weeks apart too. But Stallons insists it was just fate. “Truly, it was pure luck and blessing that we shared the experiences of pregnancy and motherhood just weeks apart both times,” she said. “The first time I thought I was pregnant, I told my sister, and without hesitation, she smiled and said, ‘I think I am too!’ We've grown up together, shared a college sorority sisterhood, and now we've had the fortune of walking through this unique journey side by side.”

For sisters-in-law Nikki Roberti Miller and Brittany Roberti, the goal of raising their children together was always in the back of their minds. So when the time came when they were both ready to begin trying, they were excited to learn they were both pregnant at the same time. Fortunately and unfortunately, both Miller and Roberti suffered from several issues during their pregnancies, especially in the first trimester, and even had to take the same medication. Though it was a difficult pregnancy for both women, having the shared experience was comforting. “Having someone as sick as me to commiserate with was a blessing, because oftentimes even other pregnant women just don’t understand what it’s like to be that level of sick,” Miller said. While she suffered from preeclampsia and Roberti struggled with gestational diabetes, the twosome supported one another from day one until they both eventually had emergency C-sections. “I don’t know what I’d do without my sister-in-law. She’s the ultimate pregnancy buddy and a pretty darn good mom friend too,” Miller shared.

American Horror Story has been full of releases as of late, especially with new characters and guest appearances.

After its theme release for the upcoming season, the last few weeks have been full of speculation, promo photos, and most importantly, a cast list. FX’s official AHS: Cult site has kept busy with update after update of information, and the cast list officially includes actors Billy Eichner, Colton Haynes, Cheyenne Jackson, Billie Lourd, and Alison Pill. They will be playing Harris Wilton, Detective Samuels, Dr. Rudy Vincent, Winter Anderson, and Ivy-Mayfair Richards.

The plot hasn’t necessarily been released, but the audience can start putting together a narrative based on the photos released, all including creepy clowns lurching around corners and under beds and in meat freezers? You can take a look at the images here.

The actors themselves seem as excited as the fans, especially the culturally obsessed Billy Eichner, star of his Emmy nominated show Billy On the Street, and co-star of his Hulu original series with Julie Klausner, Difficult People. After all that, the role seems a bit out of his niche, but maybe it’s just right since most of his content is completely based on pop culture.

Leave It to Japan — They've Invented Ice Cream That Doesn't Melt

You can always count on some genius scientist to blow our basic human minds, even when it comes to something as simple as ice cream.

More: Best ice cream cameos in a film

Some of our most amazing discoveries have been accidental — like, say, electricity — and magic has happened again. Scientists at the Biotherapy Development Research Center in Japan have somehow created ice cream that doesn’t melt.

japan ice cream

japan ice cream

This miraculous discovery happened when the scientists were testing the polyphenol extracts while trying to make a strawberry dessert that would help strawberry farmers who had seen their crops affected by the earthquake and tsunami in 2011. During the process, a pastry chef got frustrated, saying the extract caused the cream to solidify and remain frozen. How annoying! But wait…

“Polyphenol liquid has properties to make it difficult for water and oil to separate, so a popsicle containing it will be able to retain the original shape of the cream for a longer time than usual, and be hard to melt,” said professor emeritus of pharmacy at Kanazawa University Tomihisa Ota, who developed the popsicles, to Japanese news organization Asahi Shimbun.

Somehow, this glorious invention coming out of a noble experiment makes it even more deliciously exciting.

Sure, part of the long-standing identity of ice cream is that it melts. But think bigger. Apparently, even after a few hours, the ice cream kept its shape. This is leading us to fantasizing about all sorts of amazing realities where we don’t have to eat our ice cream fast before it melts, but rather can savor it all afternoon.

This brilliant discovery, called Kanazawa Ice — (but also known as the “not-melting Popsicles”) — first appeared in the northwestern city of Kanazawa (hence the name) this spring, says Asahi Shimbun, but it can now be found in shops in Osaka and Tokyo.

RHONY's LuAnn D'Agostino Is Getting Divorced After Just 7 Months

In a shocking but totally not shocking turn of events, LuAnn D’Agostino announced today that she and her husband of seven months will be getting a divorce.

The Real Housewives of New York star posted on Twitter, very cordially, I might add, that she and Tom would no longer continue the short-lived marriage. She wrote, “It is with great sadness that Tom & I agreed to divorce. We care for each other very much, hope you respect our privacy during this sad time!” Exclamation point!

There’s something to be said about the legitimacy of a divorce-tweet. Why not just release a statement through your publicist if you truly want privacy? Why rely on the rest of the world to know about your divorce and trust they will actually listen to your wishes? These are questions I would take seriously if they were about any other RHONY star’s tweet. But this is LuAnn, the woman who married her friend Ramona Singer’s date after Ramona specifically warned her that it was a bad idea.

Ramona actually responded to LuAnn’s tweet, and it leaves behind a lot of skepticism.

Ramona Singer responds to Luanna D'agostino's divorce

Is that sarcasm? Is it genuine sadness? Is it a classic Real Housewives way of saying, “I told you so!”? Am I looking into all of this way too much?

During the most recent season of Real Housewives of New York, LuAnn was busy planning her dream wedding with Tom, the man she’s now divorcing. While she did have the cameras all around, she didn’t necessarily have any support from the other housewives. Most didn’t even try to stay quiet about their lack of interest in attending the lavish three-day wedding in Florida. I would say it’s a good thing they didn’t go because they would have wasted a lot of money, but these women are famous because they have money, so I won’t say that. Now, it’s just a good thing they didn’t go because they would have wasted a lot of time.

Poor LuAnn. Will one of these gentlemen ever work out for her? I really hope not, because single LuAnn out on the town with the gals in NYC is bound to be a damn good season of RHONY television.

Sylvester Stallone Cast for This Is Us Season 2 & Yes, It's So Random

Most of the time, the universe wants to see you happy, but sometimes it wants to confuse you with decisions like this: Sylvester Stallone has been cast in the upcoming second of NBC’s hit show This Is Us.

More: This Is Us' Star Writes Letter to Her Younger Self, Makes the Whole World Cry

Let’s walk back through this. Remember in the season 1 finale when Kevin had just rekindled with his long lost ex-wife in New York, and then he got a phone call to do a movie with Ron Howard? Apparently, Stallone has been cast as Kevin’s co-star in the fictional film. He’s allegedly set to be Kevin’s mentor, but those character details are still unclear.

Dan Fogleman, the show’s creator, writer and director, revealed this information at the TCA Press Tour on Thursday. Not much was explained except for the father-figure importance the classic actor will have. We don’t know if Sylvester Stallone will play Sylvester Stallone, or if Sylvester Stallone will be given a character, or if Sylvester Stallone will play a character in Ron Howard’s film but still be Sylvester Stallone on This Is Us. There are lots of exciting possibilities at play. I’m hoping for the triple threat: Sylvester Stallone plays Sylvester Stallone in a fictional Ron Howard production, while playing Sylvester Stallone on This Is Us.

More: This Is Us: A Guide to the All-Star Cast & Where You've Seen Them Before

Fogleman did discuss, however, how all this came about. They were looking for a big name to fit into Kevin’s life, especially after all the emotional breakthroughs he did have about his father Jack, played by Milo Ventimiglia. After co-starring with Stallone on the (real) film, Rocky Balboa, Milo got in touch with Sylvester’s people and here we are.

An interesting thought is how this might all play into the mysterious death of Jack. The season foreshadowed a pivotal moment for the family - Kevin, Kate, Randall, and Rebecca - and what might have happened to Jack. But the finale left us even more in the dark than we were. Maybe with this new father-figure in the picture, more about the actual father will be revealed.

Until then, let’s just keep imagining all the combinations of Sylvester Stallone playing a character of himself while playing a character of himself.

Looking for Hairstyles for Round Faces? Here's All the Celeb Inspo You Need

0

Going to a new hairstylist can strike fear into even the most hardened of hearts. Will they give you a hack job? Will they take off too much? Will they talk your ear off? There are so many questions that can make you super-nervous as you head to the salon — but we all know that as long as your stylist knows what kind of cut works with your face shape, everything is all good. Unfortunately, not all stylists know what's up when it comes to this arena, which is bad news bears if you have a round face.

Instead of leaving your fate in the hands of your new hair person (who is most likely fabulous), it's best to do a little research about what will work best for you before you even sit down in the chair. We've got some pro tips, featuring advice from hair expert Karen Shelton of HairBoutique.com.

First, is your face really round?

Before we even discuss some great styles for you, you need to know how to determine the shape of your face. To find your real face shape, measure it with a tape measure or ruler. Take (and write down) the following:

  • Measure your face across the top of your cheekbones, then measure across your jaw line, between the widest points.
  • Measure across your forehead at the widest point. Generally the widest point will be somewhere about halfway between your eyebrows and your hairline.
  • Measure from the the widest point of your forehead to the bottom of your chin. (Remember that you are measuring your face — not your entire head — and mid-forehead to chin will usually do the trick.)

There are lots of other ways women have used to figure out this shape — from outlining the face on a mirror with lipstick to draping it with a towel and asking others to help figure out the structure.

You can try any of these tips or use the steps outlined above. Whatever your method, do remember that this is more about art than science! (And the fact that nobody really has a round-as-a-basketball head.)

Round face dimensions

If you have a round face, it will be about as wide as it is long. This may vary a little where your face is not quite as wide as it is long, but it's usually pretty close.

You will have fullness at and below your cheekbones. People with round faces also tend to have wide hairlines, less-pronounced chins, and their necks often seem short.

Below are the most common face shapes besides round. Most people will fit into one of the major categories, which also include:

  • Oval Face - Length equal to one and a half times width.
  • Long - Longer than it is wide.
  • Heart - Narrow at jawline, wide at forehead and cheekbones.
  • Square - Forehead, jawline and cheekbones are almost equal in width.
  • Diamond - Wide cheeks, narrow forehead and jaw line.

Hot hairstyles for round faces

There really is no one "perfect" hairstyle for a round-shaped face; many things factor into the total equation. For example, the length of your hair, its texture and weight, your age and lifestyle requirements all play a part in what is ultimately the best.

There are good general guidelines that you can follow, but the best solution is to find a style that works best for you and all your beauty needs.

If your face is round, the best hairstyles generally include:

  1. Layered bangs rather than straight or heavy bangs.
  2. Short styles which give height.
  3. Styles that add length.
  4. Styles that keep the sides of your hair short or close to the face.
  5. Curls around the crown -- but never near the cheeks -- to create height. Keep the sides of your hair short with a curly style.
  6. Longer to very long styles, with bangs and a graduated shag or layers so that the face and the neck are given a slenderizing shape.

Consider your facial features

  • If you have a double chin, keep the hair around your face above chin level to draw the eyes upwards. The back may be grown a little longer -- a bob would be ideal.
  • If you have a short neck, a short cropped style will make a shorter neck appear longer. Long hair worn up will give the same effect. Well-placed highlights will also slenderize the face. Highlights that are woven around the face in an "angel halo" effect will also help an overly round face appear thinner.
  • Long hair can be worn just as easily as short or medium-length hair as long as you wear your hair "forward" onto your face to create a more "oval" appearance. Don't be afraid to wear your hair any length that you like!
  • While you select your style, be sure to take into consideration the texture of your hair. If your hair is thick and coarse, you would do well with a style that benefits from the "bed head" look around the crown.
  • If you have curly hair, you can use the curls by letting them add height at the crown. You can also wear your curly hair longer, with the bulk of your hair pulled back behind your ears, or with just a very few ringlets along your face to minimize the fullness.

Breaking the rules

Camryn Manheim is a classic example of someone letting her hair be the way she wants it to be and not following the strict rules for a round face. And remember Baby Spice? Her very round face is often coiffed in styles that would not normally be considered the "perfect" style for her face shape — but they still work!

One great way to find the best style for your face shape is to buy fashion, beauty and hair magazines and look through them for examples of hairstyles that you like and think would be flattering to your face shape and hair texture. Make a special hairstyle scrapbook of the styles you like best and then take the entire book to your stylist and ask them to advise you on some styles.

What makes you comfortable is more important than what's trendy

One thing to keep in mind is to find a style that you enjoy. There is no point is selecting "the perfect style" if it is impossible to maintain, it feels unnatural, or you just don't like wearing it. One trend that is definitely emerging in the hair and beauty industry is individuality. If you see a style that you love and it doesn't fit the "rules," wear it anyhow — or modify the style slightly so that it works well for your face.

The bottom line is to have fun with your hair. If you love your look — whether it fits the rules or not — you will look better because you'll be happy with yourself!

Selena Gomez has very round cheeks but a pointed chin. Her face is what you would call a rounded heart shape. Her long and gorgeous curtain of hair helps to slenderize her face.

{pageBreak}

Long bangs for round faces

Long, sideswept bangs and long layers slenderize a round face. Avoid heavy bangs and short layers around the cheeks if you want to give the appearance of a longer, slimmer face.

Long layers for round faces

Long or extra long straight hair is an ideal hairstyle for women with round faces. If you want to have bangs, sweep them to the side rather than leaving them blunt and heavy.

Wispy layers for round faces

Long, wispy layers draw the eyes downward, lengthening the look of your neck and face. This hairstyle is a great look for women with round faces. For special nights out, it's also easy to pull this style into a high updo -- which is also a terrific hairstyle for round shaped faces.

Messy bob for round shapes

A messy bob can be flattering to some women with round faces. The key is to avoid a bob that is too short and adds width to your face. Add little pomade and give your bob cut a little texture and height up top. Another tip to slenderize the look of your face with a bob hairstyle is to add a pair of dangling earrings.

Perky bob for round faces

If you have a round face and short hair, try to keep the sides close to your face. This hairstyle flairs out too much on the sides, adding even more width to an already round face.

Pixie cut for round face shapes

Don't think you can't have short hair with a round face. A pixie cut with a little spiky height at the top and layered bangs can actually slenderize the look for your face. If you have curly hair and a round face, keep the curls on the crown and away from the cheeks.

Textured layers for round faces

A terrific hairstyle for women with round faces is shoulder length hair (or longer) with razor cut textured layers. The length of the hair slenderizes the look of your face. Also pulling hair back away from the forehead can add a slimming effect.

Short bob for round face shapes

Many women with round faces steer away from short bobs, but you have to figure out what works with your own face. This hairstyle is very cute because of the textured layers. If the bangs were a little longer and swept to the side it would balance out the round face even more.

Razor cut bob hairstyle for round faces

If you have round cheeks and a slightly pointed chin, you can balance out your face with a razor cut chin-length bob. By keeping the sides of your hair close to your face, you can take the emphasis off of your cheeks.

Face-framing bob for round face shapes

A smooth, face-framing bob can work well with a round face and short, straight hair. However, you should avoid this style if you have a round shaped face and curly hair. The curls near your cheeks will make your face look even rounder. Also by pinning your bangs to the side, you can open up your forehead and elongate the look of your face

Next Up: More flattering hairstyles for round faces

Rounded bob for round faces

Should a round faced woman wear a rounded bob? Not usually. But it can work if it's the right length. A short bob that hits above chin level and bangs that are swept to the side will add the right angles to balance out a round face.

Accent curls for round face shapes

To draw the attention away your round cheeks, you want to put the emphasis on the length or the height of your hair instead. With this hairstyle, the soft layers and curly ends of the hair provide a slimming effect by drawing your eyes downward to the curls.

Outward bend for round faces

Layers are the name of the game when you are trying to slenderize the look of your face. If you have a round shaped face, soft layers with an outward bend and choppy bangs can add dimension and texture to your look. This is a fabulous hairstyle for shoulder length hair and longer.

Long layer hairstyles for round faces

A round shaped face looks more slender with sweeping bangs and long layers. This hairstyle is very flattering for round shaped faces with a slightly pointed chin. Since it's just below chin-level, it draws the attention downward (slenderizing the face) as well as adds some needed width to the chin area.

Tapered cut for round faces

Many times women with round faces avoid short hairstyles. But if you love short hair, go for it. Just experiment until you find the right style for you. A tapered cut with sweeping bangs can work well for a round faced woman with straight hair.

23 Love Coupons — Because Cheesy Gifts Are the Best Gifts

We love giving (and getting) gifts, but what do you get a partner who is not at all materialistic and already happy with what they have? It's not a reflection of a loving relationship and seems trite when you throw a box of new clothes or some grooming products at them — yet it's still important that you give them something every now and again to remind them how much they mean to you, right?

Enter love coupons. Now, we know that the word "coupon" doesn't usually make your mind race with sexy thoughts — but we promise that love coupons can be much more naughty than clipping discounts out of the Sunday paper.

Love coupons are an inexpensive way to add some fun into your relationship — and although you're giving them as a gift, you can totally finagle the coupons in your favor. I mean, a coupon for a hot night at a hotel with your partner kinda seems like a win for everyone.

And your coupons don't have to be sexual. Maybe your partner has been wanting a massage or a spa day. Boom, love coupon. There are a million different directions you can take them. Here are some examples.

Now, here are a few tips on how to make them and how to give them to your partner:

You can make your own coupon book by printing the templates right from this page. If you want to create the coupons from scratch, grab some red or pink cardstock sheets, scissors, a hole punch, glue stick and ribbon. Write your offers on the cardstock and cut them out. Decorate them with ribbons!

You don't have to give your lover all of the coupons at once. Tear them out, one by one, and hide them in various places. You could put one under the pillow. You could sneak one in his/her briefcase. Slip one inside of the book that he/she is reading. You can fill a Christmas stocking up with a handful of coupons.

Be sure to create coupons of things that you'll enjoy doing yourself. After all, they are promises from you to your lover. If you really don't want to do them, you might end up letting him/her down. The idea is to create coupons for activities that you will both enjoy.

Whenever he/she wants to redeem one of the coupons, be sure to keep your promise! If the coupon is for a romantic picnic, don't make any other plans for that afternoon. If it's for being a sex slave for a day, don't try to get out of it. Love coupons are a way for the two of you to get out of the norm and try some fun, exciting things. However, you must be serious about them. Don't try to get out of doing any of them.

Halle Berry Gives Intern Malia Obama a Public Performance Review

The Obamas' daughters may have stayed scandal-free and out of the spotlight during their time living in the White House, but there's one thing we definitely know about them: They're being brought up as normally as possible, considering the circumstances.

More: 26 Photos of Sasha and Malia Obama Growing Up Before Our Eyes

We already know about Sasha's summer job rolling silverware at a Martha's Vineyard seafood restaurant. We also know that Malia scored an internship on Halle Berry's show Extant — but what we didn't know is that Malia's experience wasn't nearly as glamorous as it sounds.

On Watch What Happens Live, Berry revealed that Malia was down to do all the dirty work that a production assistant does, despite being one of the First Daughters.

More: Malia Obama's Making Her Move on Hollywood — Again

"She was down to do whatever a PA is asked to do, and I had wild respect for her for that," Berry admitted. "Everybody couldn’t really see her as a PA, although she tried and tried to be one. We just couldn’t really see her as one, but to her credit, she tried very hard to be one."

Berry continued, "She was fantastic, she was amazing. I was such a huge fan of her. She was amazing. She is such a smart, beautiful, young woman. Look at who her mother and her father are, so duh! It was amazing."

Berry also admitted that there was a fair amount of fangirling going on — and it wasn't Malia who was gushing over the celebs on set.

"[I would ask], ‘Can we call your dad or your mom?'" Berry said, laughing.

Even though it's clear that everyone else had problems treating Malia like a production assistant, she was clearly down for it herself, showing what a gracious, motivated woman she is. Can she be any more #goals?

Sean Spicer Is Too Good Too Busy for DWTS

Apparently so.

Word is already out that Dancing With the Stars actually offered Spicer a spot on the upcoming season, which will film and air this fall. Unfortunately (or fortunately? Honestly, I don't even know anymore), Spicer turned the offer down, saying he's going to have an "overwhelming number of commitments" this fall and he won't have time for reality TV.

According to sources close to Spicer, he wouldn't have fared well anyway — "He's not a good dancer," they told TMZ.

While he's apparently too busy for reality TV, Spicer isn't ruling out TV altogether — sources have been saying he's holding meetings with all the major TV networks about who's going to get an exclusive post-White House interview with him. No word on whether any of them have actually secured that interview — or whether any of them are actually interested.

Spicer is also reportedly looking for a book deal and speaking engagements, but, again, there's no indication that he's going to land either.

Is his best chance at capitalizing on his fame actually Dancing With the Stars? Maybe Spicer should reevaluate his decision to turn that offer down. Sounds like it might be his best shot at staying in the pseudo-spotlight.

The Young and the Restless Might Finally Debut a Lesbian Storyline

0
0

In 2017, it’s really hard to believe that we are calling this news. The Young and the Restless has been reticent to feature a same-sex storyline for decades... until now.

The long-running show has featured Tessa (Cait Fairbanks) and Mariah (Camryn Grimes) in a meaningful friendship that seemed to have undercurrents of more possibilities. On the Aug. 3 episode, the women finally shared a kiss.

More: The Young and the Restless Makes Sudden & Major Changes

Before we get too excited by this major move by Y&R, TVInsider.com is reporting that CBS executives are not 100 percent behind the storyline. Not only have execs refused to comment about their possible issue with a same-sex romance, but Fairbanks and Grimes are barred from talking to the press about the brewing story.

Soaps have always pushed forward first when it comes to social issues, but Y&R has been lagging behind. Currently, it is the only soap without any LGBT representation.

More: Soap Operas Constantly Tackle Social Issues — and Often Before Other TV Shows

In 1977, the writers tried to create a romance between Kay Chancellor and her friend Joann, but the viewers made their voices heard and the story was squashed immediately. Other gay characters have come and gone, but CBS and Y&R have not really embraced the LGBT community on the show — and it’s a shame.

Y&R same sex romance

Y&R same sex romance

Even though there is a lot of drama behind the scenes with writers Sally Sussman and Kay Alden "retiring," you would think CBS would embrace this storyline as a fresh, new direction. Instead, the network is continuing to make major missteps.

More: Former Y&R Star Victoria Rowell Is Returning With a New Series

The network has already been called out for not giving equal pay to Hawaii Five-0 actors Daniel Dae Kim and Grace Park. Also, Jessica Chastain is taking the network to task for not buying any shows for the 2017-2018 TV season with female leads.

The issue clearly lies with CBS. It’s time for people to press the network to make changes. If CBS doesn't move forward, then it’s time to stop watching.

Instead, I have something that I know would mean even more to Barack than your well-wishes (and that's saying something): I'm asking you to share with Barack, right now, how you're stepping up to be a better citizen in your community. I'm asking you to share your own 'daily act of citizenship,'" Michelle wrote to Barack's supporters in an email celebrating his birthday. "Maybe that means attending a town or city council meeting. Maybe it means contacting one of your elected officials and speaking out about an issue that matters to you. Maybe it means helping to clean up a local park, volunteering at a soup kitchen, or tutoring in an after-school program."

She ended her email with this sweet sentiment: "This work is what my husband is all about."

The Unexpected Health Benefits of Rebound Sex

0
0

After my last breakup, I was lucky. I already had another love waiting for me, so I didn’t really experience the hurt and heartbreak of separation. But it wasn’t always like that. Having been dumped quite a few times myself, I can recall the utter hopelessness, the physical pain that comes with being rejected.

Scientists and social psychologists know very well how rejection activates the same parts of the brain that physical pain does. From an evolutionary point of view, it makes sense. Being exiled from the tribe meant certain death. However, our brains did not evolve as fast as our civilization, and so here we are, without need for a tribe per se, but still feeling as if we’re going to die from rejection.

So, I get it. I really do. Rejection hurts.

But how do you soothe that pain? You could swallow a bunch of Tylenols — apparently, painkillers can reduce the pain of heartbreak. But I think it’s more effective to find soothing of a more social nature. If rejection is a social hurt, then reconnection is a social balm.

I’ve found that rebound sex, when it remains casual and unburdened by illusions and desires to form a new long-term relationship, is actually helpful in easing the pain of heartbreak and preparing you for your next relationship and comes with some unexpected health benefits.

MoreWhat to Do When Your Partner Tells You They're a Sex Addict

Connect with someone

One of the benefits of rebound sex is that it allows us to connect with someone again. For a lot of people, even casual sex involves some sort of connection, whether you have the same favorite book or enjoy drinking wine together. That kind of connection is essential after a breakup; that’s why a lot of us take refuge in friendship during a breakup or divorce.

But sometimes, we need more than friendship. In a culture where nonsexual touch is almost inexistent, it’s difficult to get that skin-to-skin contact that’s so beneficial to our health outside of a sexual relationship. So even though you’re probably not ready for another long-term relationship, that longing for touch remains. And how do you get it? Well, finding a rebound sex partner is one of many possible ways.

Essentially, rebound sex is about using a connection with someone to get over rejection. An online acquaintance of mine once said that they prefer rebound relationships. They do a lot of good to the other person, and it keeps them free and unengaged long-term, which they prefer.

Of course, it takes an interesting kind of person to be a rebound provider, but even people interested in more casual relationships might take up the offer of a short-term sexual connection. All you need is to be clear about your situation and intentions.

MoreBDSM & Consent: What's the Big Deal?

Sex is really good for you

I don’t have to talk about all the benefits of regular sex — you probably know all about them. But if you’re just out of a long-term relationship, especially one that was sexless, you might want to get back on the sex ride, if only to help your body and brain cope with the rejection.

Sex makes your body stronger and healthier in all kinds of ways. It improves your immune system, and it kills pain (another reason to go for this instead of painkillers!). It also activates all kinds of feel-good hormones in your body and helps ground you in your body.

That’s why when it comes to rebound sex, I advocate a casual-but-regular partner rather than one-night stands. Maybe there’s this single friend you’ve always wanted to bang who is open to something casual. But if you prefer hookups, all the power to you: just be safe.

In short, having sex after a breakup is a great way to forget about that breakup.

MoreHow to Tell Your Partner You'd Like an Open Relationship

Stay open but independent

The best choice I have ever made for my love life is to remain independent when it comes to my living and dating arrangements. I am deeply in love with a person, but I’m never going to live with him or be exclusive to him. Although that may not be a lifetime choice, it’s what works for me right now, and I find that this agreement fulfills all my needs.

It would be easy to just fall back into an interdependent relationship right after a breakup, but in my experience, it would be a mistake. You’re still fresh from the wounds of recent rejection, and it takes time to heal and to really find out what you need in your relationship. Take this time to explore new ideas and relationships with new people in a quest to find out what you really want for the next phase of your life.

I’ve always wondered why rebound sex has such a bad reputation. It’s healthy, it helps us reconnect, and it’s great for exploring new possibilities. If everyone agrees to the terms of the relationship (honesty is the best policy!), then there is no reason to fear one person “using” the other person for sex.

The time after a breakup should be a time of healing, exploration and honesty. Have fun, but don’t shy away from working through what you need to work through. Maybe your rebound sex companion can help with that.

Chris Harrison Will Explain Everything That Happened Between Corinne & DeMario on BiP

Finally, we're getting some answers about what went down on Bachelor in Paradise.

More: 8 Bachelor & Bachelorette Stars Who Don’t Support the Franchise Anymore

Host Chris Harrison opened up to Entertainment Weekly about the controversy that's surrounded the upcoming season of the show after production was shut down following an incident of alleged sexual misconduct involving Corinne Olympios and DeMario Jackson. An investigation revealed no wrongdoing and filming picked back up, but neither Olympios nor Jackson returned to the show.

Rumors have been flying about exactly what happened and whether ABC handled the situation appropriately. According to Harrison, fans are going to learn a lot more — if they tune in when BiP premieres on Aug. 14.

More: Bachelor in Paradise Introduces Strict New Drinking Rule

"To the best of my knowledge, you’re going to see more than enough to show you what was happening that led up to the shutdown, within certain taste and values of what we can show on network TV," he said. "It’s going to be literally dealt with the moment we come on the air. We’ll start talking about it right away and start dealing with it. If you don’t, it’s the elephant in the room and then it will taint the entire season. So we want to show everybody and then get on with Paradise, because there are some wonderful things that are going to be happening."

Harrison continued, "There’s been a lot written and assumed and said about what we’re going to do and what we’re not going to do. We had already shot for three days [before the shutdown] and a lot had actually happened — a lot of people had arrived, there had been dates, we’d gotten to the point where there was about to be our first rose ceremony — so we had a week’s worth of stuff [that] we didn’t want to just throw that away because that’s what impacted the show and it’s what led to the shutdown."

He even walked us through exactly how the first episode is going to go.

"When we restart, it will be me back in Mexico walking you through what happened, and then we’re going to watch what happened. And then we’ll cut back to me and I’ll kind of shed some more light on things and then we’re going to go back and you’re going to see more of what happened, [and] not just the controversial. You’re going to see a lot of things, people falling in love, a lot of dates happening," Harrison said. "I think people have this preconceived notion of what it was like and what was going on and really the only way to prove anything or show you anything is to all watch it and you can judge for yourself. So that will involve seeing Corinne and DeMario, and it will also involve Carly [Waddell] and Evan [Bass]’ wedding."

We're glad we're going to get some answers, and we hope the resolution of this is as satisfying as Harrison is promising it will be.

Live Little Mermaid Has Been Postponed & Likely Canceled Forever

Updated Aug. 4, 1:30 p.m. PT: Lindsay Lohan didn't get her wish, and I got mine (sort of) — the live remake of The Little Mermaid has been postponed and maybe canceled.

"We are postponing the ‘Little Mermaid Live’ special," an ABC spokesperson said in a statement. "We love the idea of doing a live musical and want to make it wonderful. The project is so unique that we are making best efforts to do it next year and want to give it all the attention it deserves."

But despite that statement, there are rumors flying that the project has been scrapped altogether due to budget concerns. That's what people close to the project anonymously told Refinery 29.

Some legendary tales are better left untouched, so it's hard to consider this bad news. #SorryNotSorry.

Original story:

Hello, readers, from me, Christina, a person with a butt-ton of very frizzy bright red hair.

When you have naturally red hair, people seem to think it makes it OK for them to do certain really annoying things. Women constantly grab strands of your hair, hold them up to the light and exclaim about how people pay all of the money to get that hair color and so you should never, ever complain about anything in your life because you couldn't possibly have problems because you have naturally red hair. Men, particularly in places where alcohol is served and/or on the middle school basketball court, ask if the carpet matches the drapes.

As a relatively well-adjusted adult, I find myself able to brush these things off as minor annoyances. But as an incredibly shy child, they pretty much ruined my life on the regular.

Enter Ariel from The Little Mermaid, who was a strong, independent woman and who had the voice of an angel and whose hair looked just like mine. Suffice it to say, Ariel was a pretty important figure in my childhood life. Normally, when it comes to casting movies, even if I don't agree with the actors who land the roles, I shrug and move on with life because there are more important things to worry about. But when it comes to Disney's live-action remake of The Little Mermaid, the idea of Lindsay Lohan in the title role simply will not stand.

Lohan posted a side-by-side comparison of herself and Ariel to Instagram, presumably because she's pitching herself for the role.

Lindsay Lohan wants to play Ariel in Little Mermaid 2

Lindsay Lohan wants to play Ariel in Little Mermaid 2

Lohan definitely looks the part, which is great. If this were based on looks alone, she would nail it, and I would shut up and happily buy my tickets to see the movie. But there is one really, really big problem with the idea of Lohan playing Ariel. She can't sing Ariel's music. I know that saying that is going to irritate some Lohan fans out there because she did take a respectable stab at a music career. But Lohan simply doesn't have the right sound for the delicate soprano songs that Ariel sings. I don't want a pop-punk version of Ariel. I want the songs I used to dance around the kitchen singing as a little girl. I don't think Lohan can deliver that.

If there's one thing we've learned from the previews that have come out for Disney's live-action Beauty and the Beast remake, it's that the music cannot be an afterthought to casting a famous face for the role. Emma Watson is an incredible actress, but her extremely heavily auto-tuned version of "Something There" is an irritating mess of a great song. Disney, don't make the same mistake twice.

What surprised her most about motherhood? “I think the fact that you could love a person more than you ever thought,” she said. “I love Adam, and when you get married and you fall in love with someone, you think that there’s no greater love than that love. And then you have a baby, and it’s just next-level love.”

Prinsloo and Levine already seem to have a next-level love — based on their frequent lovey-dovey, total #CoupleGoals Instagram posts. You guys.

But Prinsloo says she's amazed by how much more she can love now that Dusty Rose is in the picture.

Prinsloo also admitted that she's a victim of complete sleep deprivation. But she ain't mad.

Workwise, Prinsloo is primed for her return to modeling as SK-II's latest campaign star. Her modeling pedigree is top-notch, with a résumé that includes runway strolls for Marc Jacobs, Versace and most famously, Victoria's Secret.

Dusty Rose will have the best dress-up wardrobe in town, as her mom has started saving clothes for her, like her wedding dress and designer dresses (because what 10-month-old doesn't want vintage Gucci in her costume corner?).

“I started keeping all the backstage VS robes for her, and thought it’s such a cool thing,” Prinsloo shared. “Like, ‘Look, Dusty, your mom walked in 10 Victoria’s Secret shows! Wow!’”

As for Dusty, she's mastered the runway crawl, if not the runway walk. She's working on saying, "Dada and Mama," is eating everything and is almost there when it comes to standing up.

And how's reformed bad-boy Maroon 5 lead singer Levine rocking fatherhood?

“He’s such an incredible dad, and so excited to see her grow up. It’s so awesome.” Prinsloo said. “I think for both of us, we’re just so obsessed with being a family and having a family — seeing this next step in our life."

In preparation for our at-home hacks, let's talk about some other things that can because yellow, discolored nails.

So what causes yellow nails?

Most commonly, yellow nails are caused by our beloved nail polish. The darker polishes especially take a toll on your nails, leaving them stained with leftover dyes. The easiest way to prevent this from happening is by always using a clear base coat. Not only does a base coat increase the life of your nail polish, but it also seals and protects the nail plates from staining. We love Salon Manicure Smooth and Strong Base Coat (Sally Hansen, $9).

Holly L. Schippers, CND Education Ambassador and Empower Nail Art Lead Educator at FingerNailFixer®, agrees that the best anti-yellowing tip by far is prevention, saying, "Using a base coat with polishes that need them and the daily application of a high-quality nail oil containing jojoba or squalene will protect the nails from staining."

The next biggest cause of yellow nails is the tar and nicotine from cigarettes. If you are a smoker, the best way to stop the yellowing of your nails is to stop smoking! OK, we know quitting is difficult, but we can't change the facts.

If none of these shoes fit, there could be a medical factor at play, meaning that you may need to get yourself to a dermatologist posthaste. RealSelf Contributor Dr. Joel Schlessinger explains, "Fungal infection is one of the most common causes of yellow nails. Other symptoms include flaking and peeling of the nail, along with an unpleasant odor. As the infection worsens, the nail bed could retract, causing nails to thicken and crumble." He adds, "A change in the color of your nails can also be a sign of something more serious. Thyroid, liver and lung diseases can all cause yellowing of the nails, as well as nutritional deficiencies like low iron or zinc."

While there are over-the-counter treatments for yellow nails caused by fungal infection, Dr. Schlessinger recommends visiting your dermatologist first of all. Prescriptions are far more effective than OTC, he says, "Plus, by seeing a medical professional, you’ll get a proper diagnosis and the best treatment for your needs."

How to fix your yellow nail problem

Besides ditching the cigs and using a base coat, keep these tricks up your sleeve:

  • Lemon juice: Soaking your nails in lemon juice will get rid of those yellow stains. Soak your nails for 10 to 15 minutes each day until you are happy with the results.
  • Peroxide and baking soda: Mix 1 tablespoon of hydrogen peroxide with 2-1/2 tablespoons of baking soda in a small bowl. Using a cotton swab, cover your entire fingernail with the paste. Leave this mixture on for three minutes, then rinse. This treatment should be repeated every six to eight weeks. If you don't have baking soda on hand, Dr. Schlessinger says water can work just as well: "You can try mixing one part hydrogen peroxide in three parts water to whiten nails. Place the mixture in a small bowl and soak your nails for 10 minutes. Be sure to rinse your nails really well afterward and apply hand cream or cuticle oil."
  • Whitening toothpaste: In order to get rid of immediate nail stains such as pink nails from wearing red nail polish, try scrubbing a whitening toothpaste on your nails using a nail brush. Remember, this is not for long-term stains.
  • Light buffing: The top layer of your nails is where the yellow stains are. By buffing your nails you will get rid of the top layers, removing some of the stains. While this method may work, buffing your nails is not recommended because it can lead to weaker nails. "This removes layers of the nail plate and can lead to splitting and peeling," says Schippers. If you choose to buff your nails, try using a clear strengthening polish after. We recommend OPI's Nail Envy Nail Strengthener Original Formula (Ulta, $18).

And when all else fails and you can't get those yellow stains to budge, consider this the perfect excuse to get a professional salon manicure (as if you needed a reason to treat yo' self). Schippers says, "Usually, there's a thin film of transparent tissue covering the nail plate, this is the cuticle. Most times, simply having a great salon manicure in which the tech knows the difference between cuticle and eponychium can solve the problem, as when they remove the cuticle the stain goes with it." She advises, "For at home, a soft manicure brush or old worn toothbrush with some soap and water can lighten the stain."

How to Get Rid of Relationship Anxiety

Being in a relationship is amazing, but it can also be kind of stressful when you think about it too much. After all, you have no guarantee that things will work out, and it’s hard to know if your partner is as invested as you are, especially if you’re a new couple.

That uncertainty is part of what makes a relationship exciting, but it can also cause some serious anxiety — and unfortunately, it’s pretty common. “When we begin a relationship, there are plenty of unknowns, and when we focus on the future and what might happen or what could happen, we allow ourselves to feel anxious,” says relationship psychologist Dr. Karin Anderson. “It’s no fun, but it’s totally normal.”

This is especially likely to happen with people who are prone to worrying or are with a partner who doesn’t communicate clearly, says licensed clinical psychologist Dr. Alicia H. Clark. “Anxiety can be just about you and be insecurities you bring to every relationship, or anxiety can reflect stresses in the relationship,” she says.

According to Clark, having anxiety about your relationship doesn’t mean you’re a terrible person — rather, it means you care. “We care deeply about securing love and keeping it safe, and we feel anxiety when love might be at risk,” she says.

But of course, anxiety kind of sucks, and you probably want to keep it to a minimum. If you’re suffering from relationship anxiety, these moves should help you keep yourself in check.

1. Don’t jump to conclusions

It’s easy to go down a bad path when your partner doesn’t answer their phone or respond to a text right away, but Clark says it’s important to press pause. “Take a moment to acknowledge and name how you’re feeling and go about the work of detangling the actual stressors from the ‘ghosts’ of your past.”

For example, maybe you were cheated on in a previous relationship and you feel nervous that something bad is happening behind your back when you can’t reach your S.O. Or maybe you’ve just read a lot of cheating stories online and are scared it could happen to you. Whatever it is, it’s important to remember that this is not the current situation.

“This can help lower your anxiety considerably again,” Clark says. “What’s left then is the stressor itself — your partner’s communication, the time you’re spending together, how you are feeling. These are the stressors that deserve focus and attention and need to be solved through discussion and different behavior.”

2. Engage in a little self-talk

Anderson suggests talking to yourself the same way you would talk to your best friend if they were going through the same situation. Try saying something like, “I know you’re freaking out, but let’s take a deep breath and calm down a bit. We have no legitimate reason to believe anything’s wrong.” It’s also important to remind yourself that just because you’re afraid of something doesn’t mean it’s true. And of course, it’s crucial to remind yourself that you’ll be OK even if things go south in your love life — even though you shouldn’t get ahead of yourself.

3. Don’t pin your anxiety on your partner if they’re not behaving suspiciously

It’s easy to assume that your anxiety is your S.O.’s fault, but it’s not fair to put your fears on them if they’re not doing anything wrong. “You’re an adult and you need to manage your own emotions and make yourself happy,” Anderson says. “It’s not your partner’s job to alleviate your anxiety — it’s yours.”

4. Remember that there’s only so much you can control

This is incredibly important to remember. You can control your thoughts and responses to situations, and that’s about it. “Ultimately, you can’t control your partner,” Anderson says. Meaning, if they’re going to cheat, they’re going to cheat. But she advises controlling what you can control. “Do everything in your power to make your relationship a great one,” she says. “If you do end up breaking up, you’ll know you did your best.”
