How to Identify & Treat Poison Ivy

$
0
0

Poison ivy seems to be a pointless plant, laying around in wait of unsuspecting people who only want to spend time in the great outdoors while it plots the demise of your clear skin and comfort. While not everyone is sensitive to its oil resin (called urushiol, which is found on the leaves, stems and roots of poison ivy), those who are know how awful it can be to discover they've been exposed.

The poison ivy plant is widespread, hardy and quite prolific. While it can be found within forested areas, it adores hanging out along paths, roadways and other areas where people and pets frequently frolic — like the edges of your yard.

More: How Many Calories Do These Outdoor Activities Burn?

Identifying the plant is fairly easy, though there are other three-leafed plants that are definitely not poison ivy out there. To be honest, the worn-out phrase, "Leaves of three? Let it be!" is probably the safest bit of advice to keep in mind as you're taking a hike, doing yard work or playing in a park.

"The plant usually has three broad, spoon-shaped leaves or leaflets and grows as both a climbing or low spreading vine through the grass and shrubs," says Dr. James Wantuck of PlushCare. Take note, though. It's not always green, either — the leaves turn red in the fall.

Identifying the rash

Poison ivy rashes are often pretty distinct and can cause a load of discomfort. "The classical rash is a red blistering eruption seen in straight lines due to the way the plant brushes against the skin," says dermatologist Dr. Fayne L. Frey. She also notes that it can be more spread out if it stems from touching clothing or a pet who has been in contact with it.

More: Am I Depressed or Just Sad?

Unfortunately, a poison ivy rash doesn't always stay put, especially since, well, it's itchy, and scratching helps spread it around your body. There is a bit of good news, though, Frey says — it's not contagious to other people. Oh, and while it may be tempting to do so, resist the urge to pile it up and set fire to it, as she says the smoke can irritate your nasal passages or lungs.

Treating poison ivy

If you realize you've been in contact with poison ivy, there are a few measures to take.

  • Wash the affected body part ASAP with soap and water. "This won’t keep you from getting a reaction, but it will reduce the severity," notes Wantuck.
  • Wash anything else that may have come into contact with poison ivy, says Frey, including clothes, garden tools and even the family pet.
  • Mild cases can be treated at home using calamine lotion, over-the-counter hydrocortisone cream and/or oral antihistamines.
  • Cool compresses can help alleviate the symptoms, says Frey
  • Wantuck suggests, "Another proactive measure people can take to combat pesky reactions to poison ivy is to use an over-the-counter barrier cream containing bentoquatam. Bentoquatam absorbs urushiol and can lessen reactions."

There are some cases that do need the attention of a medical professional, however. Get in to be seen if you experience the following:

  • Severe or widespread rash
  • Rash that affects the face or genitals
  • Blisters that ooze pus
  • Fever

More: These Foods Actually Improve Your Eyesight

While not everyone can "get" poison ivy (Wantuck says, "Approximately 85 percent of Americans are allergic to poison ivy, which means that 15 percent don’t experience a reaction when they come into contact with the plant."), it still means the potential is there for tons of folks to experience this itchy, awful, blistering rash that comes from a seemingly harmless plant. But this isn't one of those things you should risk testing on your own — if you come across a plant with three leaves, just don't touch it.

Prince Philip is saying goodbye to the British public today, at least in his official royal capacity. The 96-year-old is retiring from public life after decades of loyal service to the country and the queen.

of his trademark wit to reminisce about. While some of his one-liners have been deemed racist, sexist and/or xenophobic — and rightfully so — others are hilarious, and some downright touching. Here are seven of our favorite Prince Philip stories in honor of the years of delight he has brought the public.

7. On music

During a visit to a school for the deaf in Wales in 1999, Prince Philip apparently was not a fan of the Caribbean steel drum band playing in his honor. "Deaf? If you are near there, no wonder you are deaf," he told the students.

While speaking to the Aircraft Research Association in 2002, Prince Philip said what we're all thinking about flying commercial: "If you travel as much as we do, you appreciate the improvements in aircraft design of less noise and more comfort — provided you don't travel in something called economy class, which sounds ghastly."

2. On the queen's natural beauty

The world rarely gets a glimpse of the intimate inner workings of the couple's marriage, but one anecdote highlights it beautifully. During a visit with good friends John and Patricia Brabourne early in their marriage, John remarked to Philip about the queen, "I never realized what lovely skin she has." Kate Hudson Reacts to Anthony Scaramucci's Exit With the Perfect Photo

Kate Hudson had, hands down, maybe the best commentary on the news that Anthony Scaramucci was no longer the White House communications director. Shortly after the news broke on Monday afternoon, Hudson took to her Instagram to poke fun at the news by posting a revamped photo of the movie poster for her romantic comedy How to Lose a Guy in 10 Days.

More: Chrissy Teigen Was Finally Blocked by President Trump on Twitter

The photo swapped out Hudson and her co-star in the film, Matthew McConaughey, for President Donald Trump and Scaramucci. She captioned the photo "Box office results are in! The #1 comedy in America!" The photo was most likely meant to jokingly comment on the fact that Scaramucci spent a mere 10 days as White House communications director before he was reportedly fired from the position.

The post is a very timely joke, but we should take a moment to consider Hudson's caption to the photo as well. It's interesting that she'd write "#1 comedy in America" if only because it could be interpreted that this event is already being talked about and seen by everyone — as would be the case if it were a movie. It may also be a slight dig at the Trump administration, whose rate of employee turnover is already quite high.

Scaramucci's exit followed mere days after former White House Chief of Staff Reince Priebus was allegedly fired from his role and only a few weeks after Sean Spicer left the position of White House communications director. Scaramucci's 10 days were colorful (to put it mildly), with the tipping point possibly coming in the form of a profanity-laden interview with The New Yorker. In that interview, he referred to both Priebus and one of Trump's advisors, Stephen Bannon, with some strong language. There's speculation that this interview contributed to Scaramucci being relieved of his role in the White House.

One thing is for certain: Even though there were reactions aplenty to Scaramucci's confirmed White House exit, Hudson really delivered on the zinger-style commentary.

Rosemary Kennedy's Real-Life Story Is What Nightmares Are Made Of

$

Let's be real. The deaths of JFK and Robert Kennedy were ultra-traumatizing. So traumatizing, in fact, that just thinking about the events that occurred decades ago is enough to bring a tear to your eye. But what most Americans don't realize is that the stories of the brothers aren't even the greatest Kennedy family tragedies. These words are kind of hard to wrap your head around, but the horrific fate of their sister, Rosemary, was far, far worse.

Take a minute to mentally prepare yourself for what you're about to read, because it's disturbing as hell.

Ready?

The odds were stacked against Rosemary literally from birth. According to Kate Clifford Larson's book Rosemary: The Hidden Kennedy Daughter, when her mother, Rose, went into labor on Sept. 13, 1918, the nurse on duty tried to stall her progress by forcing her knees closed because the doctor was with other patients and the nurse didn't want to deliver the baby herself, even though she was trained to do so. The baby was forced to remain in the birth canal for two hours, causing a critical loss of oxygen.

Rosemary suffered developmental delays as a child, which did not fit in with her father, Joe Kennedy's, vision for the perfect American family. After private tutors failed to yield the intellectual results he desired, Rosemary was shuttled off to a series of boarding schools. Letters from this period reveal a young girl desperate to please her father — in one she wrote, "I would do anything to make you so happy." And she was forced to endure experimental injections meant to curb hormone imbalances her father believed were causing her mood swings.

Rosemary was by all accounts a sociable, happy girl, even making a stunning debut at Buckingham Palace while her father was the U.S. Ambassador to Great Britain. But a sudden move back home to the U.S. from her British boarding school caused a massive regression in her intellectual development and she began acting out. Fearful of a scandal that could prove disastrous to Joe's dreams of a family political dynasty, and without telling his wife, he arranged a procedure that even the American Medical Association had already warned against: a prefrontal lobotomy.

The 1941 surgery was perfunctory and brutal. A surgeon drilled two holes in her head and scraped away at brain tissue while a psychologist asked a still-conscious Rosemary to sing songs and recite stories until she became incoherent, then finally silent. Once vivacious and charming, if a bit behind her peers, she was left with the mental capacity of a toddler, her entire left side nearly paralyzed.

More: The Mystery of Jackie Kennedy & Aristotle's Relationship Solved — Kind Of

It gets worse.

Rosemary was shuttled off to a care home in New York State, and Joe continued to lie to his wife and other children about what happened to her. His story? That a doctor informed him the best thing for Rosemary was to be institutionalized with absolutely no contact with anyone. And for 20 years, that's exactly what happened — no one knew where she was and could not even visit her.

Several years later, when it was discovered she was being sexually abused, she was moved to a different facility, this one in Wisconsin. For those keeping track at home, that's one severe brain injury at birth, a lobotomy, loss of speech, trapped in her own body and sex abuse.

It wasn't until Joe was incapacitated himself by a massive stroke and the bills stopped getting paid that Rose finally discovered what happened to her oldest daughter.

When Rose visited after a 20 year separation, it was not a happy reunion. In her book The Missing Kennedy, author Elizabeth Koehler-Pentacoff wrote that when Rose opened her arms to embrace her daughter, Rosemary "beat her mother's chest with her fists shrieking with a primordial 'AAAARRRCK!'" She recognized the fact that her family had abandoned her for the previous two decades.

From then on, until her 2005 death, Rosemary spent more and more time with her family, although her brothers John and Robert never did visit her before their deaths and the relationship with her mother remained tense.

More: Kathleen "Kick" Kennedy's Short 28 Years of Life Were Full of Heartbreak

Rosemary died at her nursing home in 2005 with her four surviving siblings by her side.

The tragedy that befell Rosemary was partially due to the times in which she lived — children with special needs were hidden away then, especially by upper-class and Catholic families who saw their presence as shameful — and partially due to her father's unbridled ambition for a political dynasty. While her story was greatly overshadowed by the lives and deaths of her brothers, it's a dire warning to women who dare stand in the way of a man's ambition — even if, like Rosemary, they were never given any choice in the matter.

More: 15 Signs You Have a Toxic Boss

Unlike many other “best places to work” lists, ours is not editorially determined. We have simply averaged the answers to three questions that over 14,000 women have answered in their anonymous job reviews on our site: 1) What is your overall level of job satisfaction at this company? 2) Do you think this company treats men and women fairly and equally? 3) Would you recommend this company to other women?

While no company scores perfectly on all counts (which would be implied by a score of 100), and causation isn’t to be confused with correlation, we do see patterns in the underlying data that may offer an explanation as to why these companies appear on the list.

For starters, many of these companies have well-known brands that have invested significant resources in employee and diversity initiatives that specifically support women. For example, the vast majority of the companies on this list offer above-average paid parental leave policies, have women represented in the senior management ranks and offer policies such as workplace flexibility that female employees take note of and discuss in their reviews.

More: You Won't Believe How the Gender Gap Affects Your Side Hustle

There are some notable industry concentrations on this list, as well. For example, technology and consulting firms are well-represented. Some people express surprise at the prevalence of those two industries on our list due to the fact that women in technology have gotten notoriously bad treatment that’s been highlighted by the media. Those stories are undeniable and point to cultural problems, but they may also not be representative of every firm nor every female employee’s experiences. Similarly, some are surprised that the consulting industry, which requires so much client-facing time and travel away from home, does so well on our list.

In our view, it’s probably no coincidence that these two industries offer some of the most generous benefits packages, mentorship and sponsorship programs for women and also have made equal pay and recruiting women a priority. Both industries are also very cognizant of what they need to offer in terms of parental leave and related benefits (such as backup child care options) to new mothers and women trying to re-enter the workplace after a career break. Finally, companies in both industries tend to have invested significantly in supporting technical women in terms of recruiting and educational philanthropy.

More: How to Re-Adjust to an Office Environment After Working Remotely

Our goal in releasing these rankings is to highlight employers who have successfully made investments in culture, benefits and policies that result in an employee base that believes they’re treated fairly and enjoys higher-than-average job satisfaction. At Fairygodboss, we know that everyone can benefit from this transparency and learn from the examples these companies set in gender equality and gender diversity.

Casey Affleck's estranged wife, Summer Phoenix, has filed for divorce.

More: A Look at the Casey Affleck Sexual Harassment Claims From a Legal Standpoint

The news isn't exactly a surprise, as it comes on the heels of a yearlong separation for the celebrity couple. E News noted that the couple had been seen less frequently together in public over the years, with some of their last appearances as a couple happening in 2014. Affleck and Phoenix announced they were separating in March 2016 after more than 10 years of marriage. The two had known each other since the mid-'90s when they were introduced to each other through Affleck's friend and Phoenix's brother, actor Joaquin Phoenix. At the time of their separation, news outlets reported that they were still "very close friends," but in her divorce filing, Phoenix cited "irreconcilable differences." According to documents, she's requesting spousal support as well as joint physical and legal custody of their two kids, 13-year-old Indiana and 9-year-old Atticus.

The last handful of years have been particularly eventful for Affleck. Most notably, two separate women alleged they were sexually harassed by Affleck on the set of his and Joaquin's mockumentary film I'm Still Here. Producer Amanda White and cinematographer Magdalena Górka both worked alongside Affleck on the film, later suing him for both physical and verbal sexual harassment. Affleck denied the allegations and reportedly claimed he would countersue the two women. In the end, he settled with them out of court for undisclosed sums. The allegations followed him into 2016 when he was campaigning for an Oscar for his leading role in Manchester by the Sea.

Affleck told The New York Times last year, "It was settled to the satisfaction of all. I was hurt and upset — I am sure all were — but I am over it." This Doctor Delivered a Baby, Then Immediately Gave Birth to Her Own

There's so much to love about this story. According to People, Dr. Amanda Hess, a Kentucky obstetrician, was at the hospital to give birth to her own child when she pitched in to make sure another woman's baby was delivered safely.

Dr. Amanda Hess

Dr. Amanda Hess

The excitement all went down at the Frankfort Regional Medical Center in Frankfort, Kentucky, where Hess also works.

On July 23, Hess was resting in a hospital room — as a patient for a change — on the verge of becoming a mom for the second time. It came to her attention that a woman in labor down the hall, Leah Halliday-Johnson, was in distress.

The on-call doctor had stepped out of the building, and Halliday-Johnson's baby's heartbeat was plummeting.

Halliday-Johnson was only 1 centimeter dilated upon arriving at the hospital, but this baby — her fourth child — was coming fast and furious.

Hess heard the commotion outside her own room and realized she might be needed.

“I heard nurses running down the hallway,” Hess recounted. “I said, ‘Do you guys need some help?'”

They did, so Hess donned some splash-proof boots over her flip-flops and headed down the hall. ROCK STAR.

The on-call doctor had already been alerted about Halliday-Johnson, who'd been admitted after he left the building. He was on his way back, but Hess beat him to the punch. The on-call doctor had asked the nurses to help Halliday-Johnson keep from pushing, as her baby girl had the umbilical cord wrapped around her neck.

But Superdoc Hess could see that waiting any longer would be a mistake.

“I said, ‘We don’t have time for that,’” Hess said.

“It was urgent that baby was delivered right away,” Hess told People. “Then I walked back and one hour later I started contractions.”

Halliday-Johnson's baby girl arrived safely, and Hess' own baby girl — Ellen Joyce — was born about 11 hours later at 9:30 the next morning. She joins big sister, Kate, who is 2.

“It was a perfect way to get my own labor started,” Hess said.

Halliday-Johnson could not have been more grateful to Hess for jumping into the fray.

“It just goes to show you what an amazing person she is, what an amazing woman and mother and doctor,” she told Today.

Hess shrugged off the praise, saying her actions were "definitely more instinctual" than sitting in a room waiting for her own baby to arrive.

“I’m definitely better at taking care of patients myself as opposed to being a patient so it was just natural to get back into doctor mode,” she said in an interview with NBC. "Delivering other peoples' babies is something I do every day. And I'm more comfortable with delivering someone else's baby than my own, for sure.”

Hats off to the unflappable Dr. Amanda Hess — and welcome to both baby girls.

Last fall, fans and the cast of The Young and the Restless were thrilled to have writers Sally Sussman and Kay Alden back on board to take the soap back to its roots. Other soap sites are hinting that the female writing duo may have been pushed out the door. Michael Fairman reported that Young pitched his ideas to CBS and Sony about the future of Y&R, which brought the focus back to the legacy characters. Young posted a cryptic Twitter message on Monday night.

Do You Need DHA in a Prenatal Vitamin?

$
0
0

DHA offers expectant mothers and babies many health benefits, but do you need to take a prenatal supplement that contains the omega-3 fatty acid?

When you’re trying to conceive or are newly pregnant, you probably want to start taking a quality prenatal supplement. If you’ve been to the drugstore, though, you’ll notice that not all prenatals are the same. Some contain the usual “must-haves” — docosahexaenoic acid (which is DHA), eicosapentaenoic acid and folic acid. Do you need these — and if so, how much should you be getting a day? Do you even need a supplement at all if you’re eating well?

More: Why I went on antidepressants during my pregnancy

The DHA-IQ link… or lack thereof

Recently, a study published in JAMA examined the effects of DHA on children’s IQ. Researchers assessed about 500 children whose mothers took and did not take 800 milligrams of the supplement each day during the second half of their pregnancies. They didn’t find much of a change between groups as far as the children’s cognitive, language and motor development at 18 months. And at 4 years old, there was no advantage for those who had DHA supplementation as far as general IQ, language and executive functioning and no difference in language, academic abilities or executive functioning when the children were 7.

Perceptual reasoning was slightly higher in children who got DHA, but parent-reported behavioral problems and executive dysfunction were slightly worse in children whose mothers had DHA supplementation, though still in normal ranges.

So is it time to ditch DHA? Not quite.

DHA still has perks, but do you need a supplement?

DHA has been found to lower risks of preterm birth and preeclampsia while improving birth weight and aiding in brain, eye and nervous system development.

That doesn’t mean you need to take a supplement while pregnant according to Dr. Nicole Alexandria Smith, and OB-GYN with Brigham and Young Women’s Hospital in Boston. She tells patients to eat a well-balanced diet that includes fish low in mercury.

“Our grandmothers were probably right — everything in moderation is the best approach,” she said.

Even if you don’t eat fish, there are probably no benefits to supplementation.

“Pregnant women concerned about their babies’ neurologic development do not need to supplement with DHA,” she said.

Most medical professionals still recommend that women get 200 to 300 milligrams per day of DHA while pregnant and lactating according to Dr. Noel Strong, an assistant professor of obstetrics, gynecology and reproductive science at the Icahn School of Medicine at Mount Sinai in New York City. The American Pregnancy Association recommends Nordic Naturals’ Prenatal DHA, which has 480 milligrams DHA and 205 milligrams of EPA in each serving.

The lowdown on other must-have nutrients

Smith said to make sure you take 400 micrograms of folic acid daily — especially in the first trimester. If you’re on a gluten-free diet, you may need to take 800 micrograms of folic acid a day to make up for not getting it from wheat. Folic acid is taken to prevent neural tube defects and is best started when women begin planning to get pregnant.

To prevent anemia, which can occur in the second and third trimesters, choose a supplement with 27 milligrams of iron, Smith noted.

“Women with food insecurity, heavy smokers and some other groups may benefit from a multivitamin,” she added.

Strong said that pregnant women should get 1,000 milligrams of calcium, 25 to 50 milligrams of vitamin B6, 2.6 milligrams of B12 and 600 international units of vitamin D per day.

What exactly do you need? It really does depend on the individual. Talk to your doctor or midwife about what you may need in a prenatal, and ask if you need a prescription supplement or an over-the-counter product.

Ever gazed upon the face of a celeb and thought to yourself, "Dang, I wish I could look that #flawless?"

More: Decoding Drew Barrymore's Emotional Ode to 2016

Well, fam, there's a whole lot that goes into getting a celeb ready for high-gloss magazine photos, high-def TV appearances and big screens. And when they haven't put the work in, they actually look an awful lot like (*gasp!*) normal people.

Don't believe me? Feast your eyes upon a makeup-free selfie posted by Drew Barrymore, who did what many of us can only dream of doing: post a very real, very unfiltered selfie that shows off the fact that her brows are a little more untamed than usual. How can someone still look so dang good between brow appointments?

"OH MY GOD How did I let it get this bad. Base and brows needed," Barrymore wrote before referencing her Santa Clarita Diet character, Sheila Hammond, and the work it's gonna take to get ready to film the show's second season. "#becomingsheila... Must become her. #santaclaritadiet here we go again. Season two."

Barrymore is kind of known for living a makeup-free life, so it's not all that surprising that she got really into enjoying her downtime and focused on having fun instead of keeping up appearances — something we could all learn a little bit from, ya know? Even though she has her own makeup line, she told The New York Times in January that her own beauty routine is as minimal as they come.

"I would say 90 percent of my life, I wear zero makeup," she said at the time.

Patrick & Jillian Dempsey Celebrate 18 Years of Marriage

It looks like it's a pretty safe bet that Patrick and Jillian Dempsey have moved past their rough patch.

More: Patrick Dempsey Must Be Really, Really Good at Sex

Jillian, who met Patrick back when she was his hairstylist at a Los Angeles salon in 1994, filed for divorce from the Grey's Anatomy star in January of 2015.

But she then made no effort to move the divorce forward, and her filing was eventually thrown out by a judge for inactivity. That happened months after Jillian and Patrick appeared to have reconciled — they were photographed together looking decidedly couply in public on more than a few occasions.

This week, they celebrated their 18th wedding anniversary, and Jillian posted a sappy Instagram post that should lay to rest any suspicions that they haven't completely worked through whatever issues caused her to file for divorce.

"Happy 18th anniversary @patrickdempsey!" she wrote alongside a photo of Patrick kissing her on the cheek on a beach with the water behind them. "Through thick and thin... I love you."

She signed the message, "~wifey," in case anyone had any lingering doubt about their relationship, though by now, that should all be taken care of.

Even right after Jillian filed for divorce, it was unclear whether their relationship was actually coming to an end. At the time, sources close to the couple said there was "still a lot of love between them" and claimed Patrick had taken full responsibility for their troubles. He "was going through a bit of a midlife crisis. But he’s snapping out of it," one source told Us Weekly.

And last year, when Patrick confirmed that he and Jillian were officially back together, he hinted at the responsibility he was taking, saying, "You have to work at everything. And you cannot do everything. Something has to be sacrificed."

This Mom Was Shamed After Her Child With ADHD Threw a Tantrum — & It's Not OK

There are few parenting moments worse than the classic public meltdown of a tantruming child — and the inevitable looks-that-could-kill from strangers.

As reported by Redbook, single mom of two Taylor Myers works hard to keep her 4-year-old daughter, Sophie, on an even keel, but it's a constant struggle. Sophie has attention deficit hyperactivity disorder and is prone to outbursts that make her mom's life challenging to say the least.

In a Facebook post that has gone viral, Myers described a recent incident that took place while she was in a store checkout line. Sophie began attempting headstands and begging for a bag of chips, then lashed out at her mom with a verbal assault.

Myers tried to hold her ground and refused to give into Sophie's bad behavior, but another shopper behind her in line got nasty.

Understandably, Myers hit her limit. According to her post, frazzled and ashamed, she shot back, "She's four years old and you need to mind your own f***ing business," she told the fellow shopper.

"She's relentless. I know this. I live with it," Meyers wrote on Facebook. "Her ADHD and obsessive little heart gets on these subjects of things she finds unjust and wrong and it doesn't stop until she eventually falls asleep or something very dramatic happens to snatch the attention off the obsessed-about subject."

She continued, "I walked to self-checkout so I could avoid facing anyone else as 'that person'...with the misbehaving child."

Even if you don't have a child with ADHD, you can probably relate. But there's a happy turn to the story. As Myers cried in a self-checkout lane, a kind woman approached to chat with Sophie.

More: Stop Telling Me to Predict My Child's Tantrums

Myers wrote, "She asked her questions to distract her, but backs me up when Sophie begins to go on about wanting the chips. 'No, you can't have those today. You have to be good for your mommy.'"

Myers was beyond grateful and wrote poignantly about the cruelty of mom-shaming.

"You never know the problems a child has that causes them to misbehave and unless you know the struggle of being a parent to a child like mine, you cannot judge me," she said. "It only takes one comment to break someone down. But it also takes one small act of kindness to make a mama feel comfort and validation."

Her post went live a few days ago but has already been shared 146,000 times. It's hitting home with a lot of parents.

"They aren't 'children like yours' they are just children," one parent wrote to Myers. "She is alive, she's happy and like you said, she's four. You are doing the best you can and you are doing well."

"Oh I've been there mama. Sending so much love to you," wrote another.

"Your a wonderful and loving mom, not to mention a wise young woman. Ignore the ignorant haters. They are the ones with the problem," said a third commenter.

The moral of the story? We're all just doing the best we can as parents. Let's cut each other more slack — and not just in the comments section of a Facebook post after the damage is done.

Polar Seltzer Released Mythical New Flavors, & People are Stocking Up

It's time to clear out your pantry (and fridge, bedroom closet and hallway... wherever you have space!). Polar Seltzer just released four new flavors, and you've got to stock up before they're gone.

I'll be the first to admit that I am ridiculously obsessed with Polar brand seltzer. Their cranberry-lime flavor is unparalleled, and ever since I moved to the West Coast, the first thing I do when I visit home is stock up — their flavor selection is miles above any other brand.

I even bought a bottle of their Unicorn Kisses seltzer on eBay when the flavor was first introduced last year, and it will be hard to resist doing the same thing with their new Impossibly Good line.

What is Impossibly Good? Joining last year's Unicorn Kisses, Polar has added Dragon Whispers, Yeti Mischief and Mermaid Song flavors to their roster. The packaging is incredibly cute.

The Yeti Mischief cans are so adorable, I totally want to make the empty cans into some sort of upcycled garland I can use to decorate with.

And the flavors apparently taste pretty good too, each one being a different blend of fruit flavors. According to some initial taste testers, Yeti Magic tastes like fruit punch (though at least one Instagram user claimed it was a spot-on lemon-lime). Dragon Whispers is a blend of Pixy Stix, strawberry and pineapple. Mermaid Songs is a complex blend of Swedish Fish, Sour Patch Kids and pine tree (LOL). And Unicorn Kisses remains enigmatic, with tasters detecting everything from green apple to cotton candy in a single sip.

Of the mythical creatures that inspired these flavors, the company said that, "[A]ll are New England natives...From the tree-tops of the Green Mountains to Cape Cod’s coastline, these beautiful creatures are finally getting their due." Polar fans seem to agree that their time in the spotlight is long overdue, and they're stocking up as though preparing for a seltzerpocalypse.

And honestly, who can blame them? I like La Croix as much as anyone, but when it comes to choosing from a nationally distributed can of lime seltzer or a local New England brand's Mermaid Song flavor, is there really any competition?

The Impossibly Good flavor selection will be around for a limited time only or until supplies run out. Hey, if ever there were an excuse to book a spontaneous trip to New England...

How I Make Traveling With Relatives Work

$

We just got back from vacationing with our kids and my parents, and not only did we live to tell the tale, we’re doing it with a smile. Why? Because we finally figured out how to make multigenerational travel work for us rather than against us — we learned to get some real quality into our quality time together.

More: Where to take kids on vacation — and on a budget

What’s the secret? Honestly, I think it was that we found a balance of togetherness vs. space. I know that people talk about this all the time when discussing group travel, but it was like we hit that sweet spot and all was well with the world. We had a very carefully planned itinerary: parents, grandparents and kids all involved on some days; grandparents and kids in one direction and parents in another on some days; parents and kids occasionally — because grandparent kid duty is one of the biggest perks of traveling together — and everyone on their own sometimes.

Wait, what? That’s crazy — you have an 8-year-old! Yes, we do. And let me tell you, the kids’ club is a glorious invention. I used to think that it was shirking parental duty. But both this kid and the near-teenager asked to go almost every day. They had a chance to make friends and be with kids their age — and get a break from each other — and we could have some all-adults time.

Being able to talk, enjoy a glass of wine and relax without interruption did wonders for the adult members of the group. My mom and I got time to interact as peers rather than navigating the waters of parent and grandparent. My stepdad could even hear what I was saying since I wasn’t trying to shout over the kids. Amazing!

More: 113 cute alternative names for the grandparents

We also allowed for some measure of democracy in setting the pace and the agenda. The kids weighed in on what they wanted to see and what they wanted to skip; we did the same, and so did the grands. It involved a hefty amount of negotiation, like, "I'll do the museum if you’ll agree that we don’t have to get up early to make it happen," but it meant that everyone felt that they’d been heard. As a side benefit, we also got a better mix of activities than we might have if just one group had established the direction throughout. We did the museums and the historically significant sites, but we also did movies, live music, a folk dancing demonstration, a hands-on class, beaches and more.

It hasn’t always gone smoothly; we’ve been doing family trips for well over a decade now, and some have been far more successful than others. Undeniably, there were times that my husband and I got home with our jaws aching from clenching them so hard — did we really just spend an entire day of our break doing that? But we’ve all adapted over the years, and now we’re really starting to see the fruits of failed family vacations past.

We know that sometimes you go along to get along, and sometimes you go ahead and say that you’d rather not — whether it’s eating at a restaurant that only does seafood and your gang is strictly non-fish-eating, driving an extra half-hour for sightseeing with already-tired kids or just staying out later than you’d planned. There are some battles that are worth fighting because they help to head off future wars. Others... not so much. Better to just breathe deeply.

I’ve also learned that if I’m relaxed, that’s what gets mirrored back to me in kind. When I’m in knots about adhering to bedtime, soda quotas, screen restrictions and other formalities of life at home, the tension level around me tends to reflect back: the kids get crankier, the grandparents get more defiant about sticking to my rules — we all get more uptight and we all enjoy the experience less. If on the other hand I can bring myself to concede that vacation has a different set of expectations, we’re all better for it.

More: 16 places your kids really want to stay this summer

I know that someday, we won’t be able to have these trips anymore, and that I’ll miss the days when we could all be together. Someday, older people won’t have the energy or the ability to get around as easily. Someday, younger people will have jobs and commitments that make it hard to schedule around their daily lives. I know that those days will come, so I try to capture the moments while we have them, enjoy them while they are there for the taking. Someday, we’ll be talking about our memories of these vacations, and I want to do all I can to be sure that when we do, those conversations are ones that we have with smiles and laughter. I don’t know that a vacation can leave you with a better souvenir than that.

More: Because We Can't Handle Any More Sad News, Let's Talk About Frozen 2

There's a new hit musical headed for Broadway, and we're already getting a sneak peek. The Broadway adaptation of Disney's Frozen is opening for an out-of-town tryout (as if it isn't going to be a smash with its fan base already established) in Denver this month and scheduled to debut on Broadway in spring 2018. It's just what we need to tide us over until Frozen 2 comes out in 2019.

The cast and crew behind the new production are getting us all stoked with a newly released behind-the-scenes video, showing some rehearsal shots and giving us some insight into what's gone into turning Disney's hit animated film into a musical production for the stage. You'll want to watch it for the glimpses at the choreography if nothing else. Trust.

Also, some other important information to know: The musical version of Frozen is going to follow the same storyline, but instead of seven musical numbers like in the movie, it will have 21. "Let It Go" is obviously impossible to top, but that's a lot of new music to get excited about. The musical is written by the same team who wrote the movie's score, so you know it's going to be good.

The musical is also going to delve a little deeper than the movie did into the backstories of the main characters, especially Anna and Elsa. Character development is never a bad thing, so bring that on.

Demi Lovato Is Confident AF in New Instagram Photo with Empowering Message

When you're sweating it out in the gym and don't feel like you're seeing results, it can be a total motivation killer. But hard work does pay off, and Demi Lovato just posted a photo to Instagram proving that good things come to those who hustle.

What was even more impressive than Lovato's toned midriff, though, is the candid — and empowering — message accompanying the image.

"I rarely post pics with my belly button showing because I’m normally insecure about showing my full stomach but I’ve been working really hard and thanks to @d.leith and his yummy food with @lockhartandleith I’ve been seeing progress so I thought I’d post this cause I’m feeling myself right now!!" the 24-year-old explained.

Although Lovato often posts pics and video of her workouts, the star typically doesn't post pictures of her stomach. What she does routinely share are messages encouraging her fans to have self-esteem and be body positive.

More: Demi Lovato Is the Best at Dramatic Readings

And while Lovato has always seemed to love her body no matter what shape or size it is, sharing the photo of her midsection proves she's truly practicing what she preaches. The pic further promotes body positivity by showing what it looks like to celebrate yourself whenever confidence strikes. Or, as Lovato puts it, when you're feeling yourself.

The subtext, of course, is that you don't have to wait until you look the way society says you should to celebrate yourself — you can do it any time you take a look in the mirror and think, "Damn, girl!"

This is an important message for Lovato to embody, given the singer has been open in the past about her body image struggles. In sharing her journey and insecurities along the way, she's undoubtedly imprinting upon young fans how crucial it is to love yourself first and foremost.
