10 Reasons to Wallpaper the Space Behind Your Headboard

By: Michelle Gage

We get it — wallpaper can be a huge commitment. While it provides a lot of look, it can also be a huge investment. It can be quite costly to wrap your whole room in wallpaper, which is why we're big fans of wallpapered accent walls. You can apply a great print or pattern to one wall in your room and paint the remaining three — a much more affordable way to get the look. In your bedroom, we suggest using wallpaper behind your headboard, which can bring so much personality to a space.

Make a statement with the navy marbled wallpaper Jojotastic used in her bedroom. This wave-like pattern — marbled stripe in navy by Rebecca Atwood — is far from subtle; it is bold and soothing. Add a little extra appeal with a bold brass headboard. Hang a piece of vintage nude artwork above your bed and consider your space finished.

In absence of a headboard, style your space with a soft gray printed wallpaper like the one found in this room in the The Michelberger hotel in Berlin designed by Werner Aisslinger. If you are creating a room on a budget — but still want to infuse some style — forget the headboard and just do wallpaper. This look is perfect for a small space or rental.

This room hits all the high notes. When sorting through all the wallpaper options out there, start by selecting one that is your favorite color. This jewel-toned shade is rich and regal. To bring the design full circle, pull out a color from the wallpaper’s pattern and paint it onto the adjacent walls.

Try a cloud print behind your headboard. A gray and white cloud wallpaper like the pattern used by TFAD Architects in this Sydney, Australia, home is perfect for the bedroom; it provides a tranquil vibe. To drive home that cozy and comfortable vibe, keep the materials at a minimum and the colors neutral.

Maybe your bedroom is in need of some exploded florals on the walls like Jennifer of Decor Gold Designs used here. To design a room around a bold print, start with the wallpaper and the rest will pull together quite easily. If you're looking to achieve a similar look, but with a more masculine vibe, try a landscape style behind your bed.

Place your bed against these blooms and prepare for a restful night of zzz's.

On Wednesday morning, Donald Trump made the divisive decision to announce that transgender individuals would be barred from serving in the U.S. military in any capacity. And not surprisingly, the revelation has since been met with outspoken criticism by many.

"Our military must be focused on decisive and overwhelming victory and cannot be burdened with the tremendous medical costs and disruption that transgender in the military would entail," Trump said in a series of tweets.

As if television couldn’t get nostalgic enough these days, Hulu will officially be bringing back ABC’s popular block of programming called TGIF, which includes shows like Full House, Family Matters, and Step By Step.

More: Candace Cameron Bure quits - The View can't compete with '90s revivals

The '90s have been a recurring thematic phenomenon for the past few years, with channels like Nickelodeon and shows like Twin Peaks jumping on board to bring back programs that now 20- to 30-year-olds desperately crave. Even the fashion has come back - cutoff jeans, chokers, overalls. But with TV shows serving as a staple signifier for that culture and personality we desire in the world today, Hulu is on the ball.

Hulu is snagging the rights to those shows listed above as well as Perfect Strangers and Hangin’ With Mr. Cooper. The deal between the streaming service and SVOD was officially announced Thursday from the Television Critics Association summer press tour, and it includes over 800 episodes of the five shows that have only been available as reruns on various networks. So, for the first time in 12 years, every episode from ABC’s 1989 to 2000 and 2003 to 2005 Friday night lineup will be available in full.

More: The '90s were awesome, so here's how to parent like their back

“These shows are more than just beloved hits,” says Hulu’s SVP of Content, Craig Erwich. “They were part of a cultural tradition to tune in every Friday night. Now, it can be Friday any day of the week on Hulu.” And honestly, who doesn’t wish every day was Friday? President of Warner Bros. Domestic Television Distribution, Ken Werner, added, “With this acquisition, Hulu is making available to their subscribers one of the most popular comedy blocks of programming ever.”

This marks another 90s revival success from 90s kids all across the land! There is no release date for the popular shows quite yet, but everyone is on the edge of their couches to see when they can tune into Friday night every day.

Bernie Sanders Is Actually Related to the Actor Who Impersonates Him on SNL

Okay, so let’s just get right to it: Larry David and Bernie Sanders are genuinely related.

More: 10 controversial SNL sketches before the show took on Trump

You read right. The Seinfeld and Curb Your Enthusiasm creator and star truly shares blood with the runner up for the Democratic party’s presidential nomination. David, of course, impersonated Sanders during SNL’s campaign run parodies. He performed for the primary debates, looked back on the primaries, and got a crowd together for the famous “revolution.” And he performed alongside Kate McKinnon as Hillary Clinton. God bless ‘er.

David was so good at the impression, and Sanders was extremely humble in saying so himself. But even those pipe dreams of the two being so alike that they could be brothers weren’t far off. On a recent episode of Finding Your Roots with Henry Louis Gates Jr., the comedian’s ancestry became the topic of discussion amongst the show’s TCA panel.

More: The women of SNL are killing it this season, and these sketches prove it

The discussion ultimately lead to an “unintentional” finding that David is actually related to his character on NBC’s late night comedy show. Go figure. Or as Larry might say, “Pretty… pretty… pretty… pretty weird.

Variety reports that the two aren’t immediate relatives though. It’s more of a third cousin situation, but still kind of miraculous when you consider how many people there are in the world, and how many people were chosen to do the perfect Bernie Sanders impression.

“I was very happy about [the findings],” said David. “I thought there must have been some connection.” Um, yeah, I think everyone was pretty sure there was a connection, but nobody really expected that the connection would be familial!

As the long awaited ninth season of Curb Your Enthusiasm comes back to HBO, and guests have already been booked, we can’t help but wonder if the tenth season might have anything to do with the craziness that is Larry David’s life in terms of his literal relation to the one and only Bernie Sanders. Only time and HBO will tell.

How Big Little Lies Affected Nicole Kidman Physically & Emotionally IRL

Nicole Kidman’s performance on Big Little Lies was astonishing, but it was also taxing. Recently, the actress opened up about how much of a toll playing the part of an abuse victim played on her.

More: 14 roles that guarantee Nicole Kidman will be aways be a superstar

Kidman played Celeste Wright, a domestic violence victim who was often covered in bruises during filming and suffered from a major emotional toll. But Kidman has spoken about her husband, Keith Urban, and his presence when he was really there for her after every day of shooting. He provided an important support system when the actress was effected by her work on the HBO show.

“Because we were shooting for so long, I think the duration of the production slowly started to seep in,” Kidman starts. “Normally, I can step back into my family life in a very easy way. Not always, but you know, usually. I’ve been working a long time now. But it was hard.”

More: How Nicole Kidman is spending her 50th birthday with Keith Urban

She continued on to discuss how important Urban’s role was in dealing with the complex emotions that went into an abuse victim’s psyche, day in and day out. Kidman continues, “Luckily, I have a partner who is artistic so he understands what it takes to support that. I came home to loving arms, someone who would hold me, and I was really upset at times. Really damaged, really upset, and physically and emotionally drained and in pain - my neck, particularly."

An important aspect of the show is the characters, of course, but it’s also been how candid each actress has been about those roles. Kidman has been especially open about everything she’s been through in tapping into the mind and soul of a woman in an abusive relationship. “I didn’t realize how much it had penetrated me - it affected me in a deep way,” she said.

More: Nicole Kidman can hardly believe she married Tom Cruise at such a young age

Kidman reminisces about a specific scene she played out. "I remember lying on the floor in the bathroom… and I just wouldn’t get up in between takes. I was just lying there, sort of broken and crying. And I remember at one point [director Jean-Marc Vallée] coming over and just sort of placing a towel over me because I was just lying there in half-torn underwear, and just basically on the ground with nothing on and I was just, like [gasps]."

For those who have watched the show, there are triggers everywhere for abuse victims. But Kidman didn’t necessarily think she needed a warning of any kind when taking the role. Though she does incredible work, the toll it took on the actress was surprising, and couldn’t even be compared to the trauma of an actual victim. Support like Urban’s is important in either instance.

4 Ways to Keep Your Dog Active & Entertained in Hot Weather

$

0

There is nothing doggy about the dog days of summer. My dog hates the heat, which makes sense since her thick, shaggy black coat makes her a prime candidate for heatstroke.

The only thing she hates more than the heat is boredom.

We have lived in a variety of climates, from Maine to the tropics, and keeping her German shepherd brain entertained is a full-time job no matter the temperature outside.

Here is what I learned about surviving the dog days of summer.

1. Dusk & dawn are your friend

One of the simplest solutions for keeping your pooch cool is to avoid the heat entirely. This can mean changing your routine, which is easier said than done, but nobody ever said dog ownership was always a walk in the park. Or maybe it just means that sometimes you have to take that walk in the park at 6 a.m.

Early mornings and late evenings are typically cooler than the middle of the day, which means you may have to get up a little earlier to take your dog for a walk or run and possibly push off some evening plans now and again to enjoy the cool of the evening.

More: 6 summer safety tips to keep your dog happy and healthy all season long

2. Mental stimulation is key

Not all activity has to be physical. Really hot days are a great excuse to stay indoors and enjoy the air conditioning if you have it, but that doesn't mean your dog has to join you on the couch.

Some days, mental stimulation is just as tiring for my dog as a long run. In fact, I have gone for a 5-mile hike and returned to find my dog just as energetic as when we left, and on other days, a few minutes of obedience training tuckers her right out.

Teach your dog a new trick or reinforce previous obedience lessons with a practice session. If you have the time and the means, you could even enroll your dog in an indoor class to learn new skills.

More: Fun sports to teach your dog to play

3. Hit the surf

Many dogs love water, and swimming is a great activity for the summer. It keeps your dog cool and active, but it does come with risks. Many beaches, whether they are on a lake, the ocean or a pond, are in direct sunlight. This can pose the risk of heatstroke, so be sure to offer your dog plenty of water and watch out for the warning signs of heatstroke. Hot sand can also burn your dog's paws, so waterways in shady areas are a safer bet.

Setting up a kiddie pool or sprinkler in your backyard is a great alternative to hot beaches, especially if you can't find a shady lake, pond or river to frolic in. Alternatively, you could get involved with a local dock-diving club.

More: 10 ways to keep your dog safe in the summer sun (that they'll actually enjoy)

4. Play a game

Dogs love games, and games are a great way to keep your dog entertained and active. My dogs love to play hide and seek. This game is also a great way to practice the stay command.

Have your dog sit and stay in another room, perhaps with another person to help hold them. Then hide either yourself or a toy and invite them to search for the desired object. Just don't make it too difficult, as your dog may get frustrated.

Beating the heat is tricky, but with a little ingenuity and flexibility, you and your dog should be able to enjoy a summer of fun, even on those scorching-hot days.

Dream Trip Turns to Vacation Horror When Woman Contracts Tuberculosis

$

Traveling abroad is often considered to be a life-changing experience. You come back with cherished souvenirs, priceless photos and extraordinary stories. But beyond the contents of your suitcase, you might unknowingly bring something else home: tuberculosis.

Kristen, a 32-year-old product-marketing manager at a San Francisco tech company, was always passionate about traveling and living an active lifestyle. In 2014, she and her husband decided to quit their jobs and see the world for six months. No plan, no itinerary, just adventure.

“We like cultural experiences," Kristen told SheKnows. "We ate street food, took long train rides through India, we went on treks — we had as much of an experience as we can. It was all great... until I found out I had TB.”

Whoa, slow down — tuberculosis? Aren’t we vaccinated for that?

Actually, we’re not. While about one-third of the world population has some form of TB, it isn’t seen as a major threat in the United States. We get tested for exposure to TB as children (remember those two little needle pricks on your forearm?) but nothing is protecting people from the disease. It isn’t necessarily easy to catch, but certain factors do increase your chances of exposure — especially if you travel to a TB “high burden country.”

More: Vaccinations You Need as an Adult

As it spreads through the air — like from a cough or sneeze — mycobacterium tuberculosis makes its way into your lungs. Here, it begins to grow slowly and in many cases quietly. For Kristen, these silent symptoms persisted for a year and half after her return home.

“As travelers, my husband and I are always calculated risk-takers,” Kristen explained. “We research necessary vaccines and follow state advice designed for people exposed to medical risks or dangerous political situations. We’re adventurous, but safe.”

The couple did their homework. It never once crossed her mind to get checked for TB.

In fact, it is rarely suggested that individuals get a TB test when they return to the United States, especially since the symptoms of TB aren’t always clear. Kristen did not feel ill; she didn’t have a cough or a fever. But she began to notice that she had some fluid in her lungs.

“I would sit up in the morning and I could hear my lungs drain, like the noises from an empty stomach,” Kristen said.

Time and time again, Kristen’s doctors assured her that she was just experiencing allergies. For eight months, she was simply sent home with Zyrtec, Flonase and saline solution — none of which got rid of the fluid filling her lungs. As a matter of fact, her symptoms were getting much worse: Kristen began to cough up blood. Afraid that her doctor would send her home with allergy medication for the umpteenth time, Kristen began documenting the blood with photos.

As the photos became darker and darker in color, Kristen finally got her doctor’s attention. She was immediately sent for X-rays and a panel of tests.

The terrifying discovery of active TB

TB can be detected in your body in two forms: latent or active. In its latent form, your body has been exposed to the tuberculosis bacteria, and your immune system is successfully responding to it. You aren’t contagious, but the bacteria can progress to an active state at any time. In its active form, the bacteria have multiplied enough to suppress your immune system and can easily spread to others.

Given her extensive travel history, Kristen wasn’t surprised when her TB test came back positive for TB exposure. But her X-rays also showed a mild case of pneumonia. When they put the evidence together, her doctors realized that Kristen could have active TB. She was immediately advised to wear a mask and stay out of public spaces. With plans to fly to Hawaii the next day, Kristen began receiving urgent calls from the CDC threatening to place her on the Do Not Fly List unless she canceled her flight.

“There was zero urgency with this for eight months, and they didn’t even have confirmation of my diagnosis,” Kristen said. "I remember thinking, 'What do you mean, TB?'

She soon completed the third piece of the diagnosis puzzle — a sputum test — and the skin cells from her lungs were found to contain active TB. Kristen was immediately handed over to the California Public Health Department; it was now illegal for her to put herself in public.

Quarantined: What it’s like to live with TB

After confirming the presence of active TB in her lungs, Kristen began a strict routine of daily observed-therapy sessions at the California Public Health Department, where they monitored her as she took her medicine in isolation.

“My antibiotics were hard on my stomach and made me feel sicker than the TB,” Kristen recalls. “Really, an unpleasant experience.”

Kristen was forced into isolation within her home for eight weeks. She was only allowed to go outside in well-circulated areas with minimal human interaction. She continued to work with her clients, but only through video conference. Kristen was considered a major threat to public health.

“I couldn’t be around people besides my husband, I couldn’t walk to a grocery store, I couldn’t go in an ice cream shop, ” Kristen said. “I felt like a prisoner.”

As if the immense solitude and demanding medication wasn’t enough, the Public Health Department began to sit her down for interviews to try to figure out every single person she had been in contact with over the past three months. This meant that Kristen’s family, friends, and co-workers all had to be tested for TB; any chance of anonymity was thrown out the window.

“I had to be brave and be honest with everyone,” Kristen explained. “I had to say, ‘I’ve held your baby, I’ve been around you, friend-who-is-pregnant, mother-in-law-undergoing-chemo, and I may have gotten you really sick.' I’d ask them to cooperate with the Public Health Department.”

Maybe the CDC website outlined the physical symptoms of TB, but they surely never explained the emotional agony it caused Kristen.

The importance of latent TB testing

After eight weeks of isolation and a total of nine months of antibiotics, Kristen returned to her normal life. Better yet, she continued to travel extensively despite the difficult diagnosis she once faced. Today, she wants to tell her story to spread much-needed awareness of TB. Her intentions aren’t to scare people from traveling. Rather, she wants everyone to embrace their passion of traveling and remain adventurous — and take a latent TB blood test when they get back home.

More: I Delayed My Dreams for Over a Decade Because I Was Just Plain Scared

“If you’re exposed, it’s not a big deal,” Kristen said. “You get on antibiotics and get it taken care of before it becomes active.”

TB tests are quick and can be performed by your primary care physician and even at some local pharmacies. Kristen’s husband decided to get tested after her diagnosis. The results of the blood test came back positive for latent TB, but he caught it well before it could advance to an active state. After initiating a simple round of antibiotics, he was able to go to work and spend time in public without a quarantine period. His life didn’t have to change.

“Progressing to active TB is so invasive in every possible way, with every friend and every family member involved,” Kristen said. “It’s better to treat it in the beginning, and never let it get as bad as it did with me.”

If you find yourself abroad this summer or even just an area of high immigration and population, take advice from a fellow world traveler: Get the TB test. You won’t regret it.

Jennifer Aniston Is Planning a Return to Television

There's one bit of television that's honestly so exciting right now that you might want to be sitting down and just doing some deep breathing exercises. It turns out that Jennifer Aniston is returning to TV with a new show and — even better — Reese Witherspoon is joining her. Two of our favorite actresses in one TV show! Be still my beating heart!

More: Reese Witherspoon Loves Easter More Than You

According to E! News, Aniston and Witherspoon will be teaming up to star in a TV show about morning news shows, such as Good Morning America. While their show will be a fictionalized take on this world, it will be interesting to see whether they emulate any recognizable morning show hosts like Savannah Guthrie or Robin Roberts. The show is also reportedly going to be a more dramatic exploration of the New York media scene, which sounds like there will be just as many dramatic turns of fate as there will be possible screwball moments on a live morning show. Reportedly, the show hasn't found a network home yet, but chances are that if they do want to go a bit darker and more serious with it, there's a chance this could be scooped up by a prestige network like HBO (read: an opportunity for things to get very real and sexy very quickly).

More: Jennifer Aniston & Jason Bateman Prove They're the Best Best Friends in Hollywood

If and when the show finds a home and goes into production, it will be time to officially celebrate Aniston's return to television. Since she wrapped on Friends in 2004, Aniston's carved out a niche in film, especially comedies. It will be nice to have her back on television, because who doesn't want to have a weekly dose of Aniston?

For her part, Witherspoon made a splash in her TV role in Big Little Lies and, to be fair, it's not her only TV role. If you were an über-fan of Friends, you might recall that Witherspoon actually played Rachel Green's sister for a few episodes.

It sounds like we get the reunion of a lifetime with this show, and honestly, I can't think of anything much cooler than that.

Mindy Kaling Says New Season of The Mindy Project Will Touch on Mom-Shaming

Mindy Kaling and her obvious baby bump delighted reporters with an appearance at the Television Critics Association panel for The Mindy Project at the Beverly Hilton on Thursday.

Though she didn't refer to her obviously pregnant state — and Lord knows, it doesn't seem like we're going to hear a peep out of her regarding the identity of the father — storylines in her show seem to be shifting to reflect Kaling's real-life changes.

After five seasons, Kaling's character's marriage will come apart at the seams as motherhood takes center stage.

More: It's Time to Stop Shaming Moms Over Kids Using iPads

“I think she’s going to learn a little bit more about how to be a good, involved parent. We have a really funny episode where [Modern Family‘s] Julie Bowen plays a rival mother who thinks that Mindy’s not doing that great of a job,” Matt Warburton, The Mindy Project's executive producer, said on the panel.

“The episode is a little bit about mom-shaming, and that’s cool. It was really fun and hit a lot of those juicy ripped-from-the-blogger-headline storylines,” Kaling chimed in.

More: Chrissy Teigen Is OK With Daughter Luna's Love for French Fries

The Mindy Project is entering its final season on Hulu.

Will Kaling ever address her pregnancy publicly? That remains to be seen, but the actor-writer-producer did recently move to a larger LA house with a big happy family-ish backyard. We're wondering if there will be a dad on the premises... and more babies in the works?

Those behind the scenes have long lauded Kaling for her natural maternal instincts.

“Mindy is really motherly to the people she loves and cares about. She takes care of them,” a source told People. “Being a mom is something she’s always talked about, but never spoke of a set plan or anything in terms of a timeline of when she wanted it to happen.”

What Are the Pros & Cons of Kids Sharing a Room?

$

Should your children bunk together? There are benefits to room-sharing with siblings, but there can also be drawbacks.

More: 16 supplies to make back-to-school fun for your kid

Putting siblings in the same room makes a lot of sense. You can save space, and they won’t be lonely. But should your children be roommates? If room-sharing is something you’re debating, we’ve explored the pros and cons with family therapist Megan Costello and parenting expert Laurie Wolk.

Pro: Frees up a room

Saving space is perhaps the biggest motivation for shared bedrooms. If you’re low on bedrooms, having your kids share a space is helpful. My preschool-aged children share, and our third bedroom is now a handy guest room/playroom hybrid. Whether to put kids together may not even be a choice, depending on how many bedrooms (and children) you have.

Con: Lack of privacy

Costello notes lack of privacy is a downside to rooming with a sibling. One thing that can help is establishing rules regarding privacy and nudity (around age 5 or 6), Costello says.

If someone is approaching puberty, that may be a good time to move them to their own rooms. “I would definitely say during those hormonal puberty years, there is a natural need for space and individuation,” notes Wolk. “It’s a time when they will need to explore themselves, their space and their body.” If independent living spaces aren’t a practical reality, Wolk advises parents to set up a system that still allows each child their privacy, for instance scheduling time in the room alone.

Pro: Strengthens friendships

“Kids who share a room often develop very close friendships with their roommate,” says Costello. My kids (ages 4 and 2) love to chat with each other before bed, and I feel better knowing they aren’t alone overnight. Another person’s presence can be a real comfort at nighttime.

More: How to teach your kid to be body-neutral

Con: More potential for conflict

More opportunities for unsupervised time with siblings means more opportunities for conflict and arguments, notes Costello. “Parents may find their kids insist they love sharing a room but they’re constantly bickering and arguing about whose stuff is where, etc.,” she says. In turn, parents need to spend more of their time navigating these conflicts. “This is stressful for parents and kids.”

Pro: Improved sharing skills

Even though there may be more opportunities to bicker, all that negotiation can turn into something positive. Improved skills with sharing are a behavioral benefit gained from sharing a room, says Costello. “Sharing a room can help kids develop conflict-negotiation skills and help them to develop perspective-taking skills.”

Wolk agrees, noting that sharing a room is a “real-life opportunity for the siblings to learn how to negotiate, speak up for what they want, ask for what they need and share. It teaches getting along with others in a safe environment.”

Pro: Encourages appreciation

Sharing builds character. “Even if families have enough money for each child to have their own room, it can be helpful to start children in the same room and let them graduate into having their own space,” says Wolk. “This allows children to learn the value of their own space as something they’re earned and a privilege, not a right.”

Con: No private retreat

For children with special needs or sensitivities, room-sharing might be challenging. “I recommend separate bedrooms for kids who have impulse-control deficits, are sensitive sleepers (easily woken, difficulty falling asleep, night wakening) or have social skills deficits,” Costello says. “Generally, children who are struggling with emotional regulation need a private, separate space they can retreat to when family and social situations become overwhelming.”

Pro: Improved communication

Being in close quarters means siblings will naturally communicate more. “Whatever issues come up, it’s a chance to practice labeling how they feel and asking for what they need,” says Wolk. “Whether it’s speaking up that they want the top bunk or determining a level of organization, each discovery is an opportunity for your child to grow.”

Pro : Real-life bonds

“Sharing a room with a sibling will allow more familial influences to surround your children,” says Wolk, author of the upcoming book Girls Just Want to Have Likes, a guide to parenting in the time of social media. “There was a time when this was the norm, and generations of family members were living together. Parents had more control over the influences in their children’s lives. Sharing a room brings a piece of that back into the home.”

If you’ve decided to go ahead a take the leap into room-sharing, Costello has a few tips for the transition. “Creating a space that is equally for both children is helpful to ease the transition,” she says. “If you are moving one child into another child's previously private room, redecorating can help both kids view the space as shared. If they are old enough to participate and contribute, working together helps build team spirit.” As much as possible, redo the room’s decor and furniture setup so it feels like a new space for both kids to feel at home in.

More: 7 summer chores to put a stop to "Mom, I'm bored!"

And Wolk urges parents to be open about the change. “Information is power. Explain why they’re sharing a room,” she says. Even if the room change is due to something negative, such as loss of employment, be honest about the situation.

“Make sure to express the positive things about sharing a space as well as the negatives,” Wolk adds. “Let them know you will work together to make it as fair, comfortable and fun as possible.”

Tyra Banks Has Regrets About Sharing Pic of Son York on Social Media

Smize queen Tyra Banks — creator and host of America's Next Top Model — took her good old time introducing her son, 18-month-old York Banks Asla, to the world.

His first pic was just in profile, with face barely showing as a newborn, and fans have been wanting more of the little guy, naturally.

About a month ago, Banks finally posted a recent shot of her son on Instagram — but not for the fans, exactly. She did it more to beat paparazzi to the punch.

She recounted the story to Seth Meyers on Late Night on Thursday, when Meyers first joked that she had beaten him by holding out on baby pics longer than he did. "Congratulations!" he said. "You made it longer than I did. I had the plan not to [share baby photos]."

Meyers' 16-month-old son, Ashe, now regularly pops up in his Instagram feed. He quipped that he caved on his resolution because "[i]t was just like, 'The world needs to see this little angel'." Case in point:

Banks is far more cautious. She explained the story behind her long-awaited toddler pic of York on social media. "It wasn't so much that I was itching for the world to see him. I went to a restaurant for Father's Day with my son and my dad. It was by the ocean and my son was, 'Awa! Awa! Awa!' Water," she said. "And so I was like, 'OK, you're going to get in the water for the first time.' I slathered him with sunscreen; he was looking purple, 'cause he's black, so when we put on sunscreen, we look purple. And he just was looking crazy — got slammed by waves, sand everywhere."

Then, as they were leaving, Banks noticed paparazzi snapping photos. And Mama Banks was not happy:. "I'm trying to hide him with a blanket. I pull over [at] the gas station after they get the shot, I text his dad [fashion photographer Erik Asla] and I'm like, 'I've got to put this picture out before the paparazzi. I don't want them to make money off our child and have the first picture.' So, I posted the damn picture," she recalled. "The next day, there ain't no paparazzi pictures, 'cause mama knew how to hide [from] that camera. She's a supermodel for a reason! And so now his picture is out there and I didn't need it to be!"

Despite her misgivings after the fact, fans were thrilled to finally see a full-frame photo of York on Instagram — the pic received over 104,000 likes.

Meyers was pretty chuffed too. "You have a beautiful baby. He is something else," he gushed to Banks. "I know you've sort of popularized the idea of smizing — smiling with your eyes. It seems like that's what your son is doing here. Did he learn how to smize from you?"

More: It's Time to Stop Shaming Moms Over Kids Using iPads

Banks admitted that York knows how to work it for the camera, but it's nothing she's taught him (or wants him to learn). "I am not a stage mom. I don't want you think that I'm saying, 'You ain't gonna get no peas and carrots if you don't smize!' He has that natural thing; I had it when I was young too. But I do not want him to model. Lord! But he has that thing. Look at him! He's like, 'Hello! I'm smizing.'"

York does indeed have "that thing" that his mama has. No doubt about that. Those. Eyes. OMG.

Everyone at American Horror Story is clearly aware that clowns come at us straight from Nightmare Land, because they're really sticking with this clown theme in all their promo materials for the upcoming season. Also bees. There's a lot of bee stuff going on.

A new poster for Season 7, American Horror Story: Cult, dropped today, and we're still just full of questions.

There's a woman in clown makeup, which fits in with all the other clown stuff we've already seen. She has a honeycomb for a brain (???), which fits with the super-eerie teaser photo that creator Ryan Murphy posted of a person wearing a coat made of bees.

The caption that got tweeted out with the poster gives us sort of a clue: "Be of like mind." That definitely fits with the cult theme and makes us wonder if the bees are just symbolic and won't actually play a huge role in the upcoming season. But also, Murphy has insisted this season is about the 2016 presidential election and, like, how do a cult and all the clowns have anything to do with that?

Like we said, so many questions.

This is par for the course for AHS, though. Teasers for upcoming seasons of the show are always packed with symbolism rather than actual scenes or anything that would give viewers a solid clue about what to expect.

You Won't Believe What Kailyn Lowry Did to Find Out the Sex of Her Baby

Teen Mom 2 star Kailyn Lowry opted for a ~highly scientific~ test to determine the sex of her third child.

On July 26, she documented on Snapchat her anonymous friend (a self-professed "high-risk maternal child health" specialist) swinging a pendulum over her pregnant belly.

It was a rather unorthodox "gender reveal" to be sure.

More: What Are the Pros & Cons of Kids Sharing a Room?

Lowry lay on her back while her friend dangled a pendulum with a ring attached to its end over Lowry’s belly. Apparently, pendulum science (we're smirking — we can't help it) says a pendulum swinging back and forth means a boy is on the way; a pendulum moving in circles means it's a girl.

Righty-o. The verdict?

“It’s a girl!” Lowry's friend exclaimed after the pendulum chain swung in several circles. “I did it on every patient; it was always right.”

Uh, OK.

So maybe it's a girl? Or... maybe not?

Lowry shares son Isaac, 7, with her ex-beau Jo Rivera, and son Lincoln, 3, with her ex-husband, Javi Marroquin.

Lowry, the author of Pride Over Pity, posted news of her third baby on her blog back in February. She also revealed in May on Twitter that Chris Lopez — her once-boyfriend and longtime pal — is the father of this third baby.

Lowry's also been busy whipping up Twitter polls to brainstorm baby names with her fans. More than 42,000 of her followers have offered their opinions.

We'll take a hard-pass on "Karsyn," if the pendulum is right. Just. No.

Taco Bell & Lyft Partner Up to Woo Drunken Taco-Eating Customers

I live in Los Angeles, so I use Lyft a lot. Our public transit isn't great, everything is far away, and I want to be able to enjoy a glass or two of wine without breaking the law and putting lives in danger — ride-share services help me do all of that.

But after a long night of dancing to '90s music at my favorite club, my long Lyft ride is basically an exercise in torture as we pass Taco Bell after Taco Bell on the drive home. My friends and I have discussed it so many times — what if Lyft could take you through the drive-thru? It would be the perfect end to the night.

More: McDonald's Is Giving Away Free Swag With Deliveries This Week

Well, Lyft is apparently listening, because they just announced that they're rolling out "Taco Mode." When riders select Taco Mode for their ride, they'll get a taco-themed car, a custom Taco Bell menu and (best of all!) a free taco when they go through the drive-thru. I am so beyond here for this!

More: McDonald's Is Giving Away Free Swag With Deliveries This Week

Currently, Lyft is testing out Taco Mode in Orange County, California, but they say that they're going to expand and hope for the program to be available across the U.S. in 2018.

I'm excited to see what other forms this program might take. Pizza Mode would obviously be wildly successful, Noodle Mode would get me into a total tizzy — the options are basically endless.

Taco Mode may not be available everywhere just yet, but at least there's hope. The next time I'm suffering through the long ride home, I can think of my future taco hauls and hopefully find some peace.

10 Things You Absolutely Need to Know Before Getting a Spray Tan

$
0
0

Warmer weather means less clothing, which means more skin on display — and for some people, that means a healthy tan is in order so as to avoid shining like a pale beacon when exposed to the light of day. But it’s 2017, folks, and we all know that baking our skin for real is out and a fake tan is in — and we’ve got plenty of spray tan tips.

There are a few other means of getting some color — easy at-home self-tanner, for one — which can be effective, but runs the risk of turning your skin (and sheets) orange. Spray tanning is definitely where it is at.

Here, 10 spray tan tips you must know before you hop in that spray tan booth. (No. 11 goes unsaid, but for the love of God, don’t forget to put on the goggles.)

Spray tans last about a week, give or take

This can vary from person to person, but they typically last about 5 to 7 days from one application.

Shower & exfoliate before you tan

Use a body scrub head to toe to slough away any dry, flaky skin before you get a spray tan so the pigment will adhere smoothly for the most even results (as in, least streaky).

More: 7 Best Under-$20 Drugstore Self-Tanners That Won’t Streak

The color won’t just wash off

The pigment that spray tans leave behind is meant to slowly fade as your top layer of skin regenerates, so it’s not the kind of thing you can just scrub off. That’s why it’s able to last up to a week — and why you should approach with caution to make sure you won’t be stuck looking unnaturally tan for a full seven days.

Apply lotion every day

Keeping your newly tanned skin hydrated is the best way to make the color last longer because it won’t dry out and need to be exfoliated prematurely.

It’ll get darker after application

Similarly to standard self-tanner, spray tans will get darker from the time they’re applied and as the day progresses. The color takes a little while to fully develop, so don’t be alarmed if you leave feeling like it’s too light — it won’t be for long.

Pat, don’t rub, your skin dry

To preserve your tan, pat yourself dry rather than scouring with a towel after getting out of the shower. The idea is not to exfoliate for as long as possible so you don’t slough off the tan. Avoid using loofahs or coarse washcloths for the same reason.

More: The 9 Best Face Bronzers to Fake an Insanely Pretty Tan

Wear nail polish

Even if it’s nothing more than a clear coat, wearing polish into the booth will help to protect your nails from the spray tan. If you do have a full manicure, don’t worry about it getting ruined — your nails will be wiped off afterward.

Think about your bathing suit

While many people decide to get a spray tan while wearing nothing (no tan lines!), if you do wear a bathing suit, wear an old one you don’t mind ruining since the tan can stain the fabric.

Apply barrier cream

Naturally drier areas of the skin, like the elbows, ankles, and knees, will absorb more pigment, so always apply a protective barrier cream before the tan so they don’t go too dark. Most spray tan salons will provide the cream for use, so make sure you don’t skip it.

Look for a discount deal

Spray tanning can be expensive, but plenty of salons will offer deals on sites like Groupon and LivingSocial — if you’re apprehensive about the process but still want to give it a shot, at least make sure you’re not paying out the nose for your first time.

How to Shut Down Transphobic Haters, as Taught by Blake Lively

This has been a rough week for the LGBTQ community, following President Donald Trump's tweets saying trans people would be barred from serving in the United States military in any capacity.

But in the face of that, many have stepped up to show support for the LGBTQ community, including Blake Lively, who posted a touching message of inclusion to Instagram alongside a photo of soldiers marching with a rainbow Pride flag.

Blake Lively post on Insta about LGBTQ inclusion 1

Blake Lively post on Insta about LGBTQ inclusion 1

"THIS is America. WE the people. ALL THE PEOPLE," she wrote in the caption. "Today I stand with our fellow citizens. No human being is a burden. I believe in equality. In freedom. In opportunity. In kindness, acceptance, and fairness. I believe in this country, so I, and many others, sign the petition linked in the bio. Please join us."

The post got well over half a million likes, but naturally, because this is the internet, it brought out some trolls. One of them wrote that Lively's stance had lost her a fan.

"You catching that unfollow for this," the comment read.

Lively, though, wasn't backing down. She personally responded to that comment, writing, "I choose love. That's the only thing that we all have. It is peace. It is happiness. Not follows or unfollows. I wish happiness for you. And I hope you find that your heart has a bigger capacity than you give it credit for. I know it does."

And that's how you show support without sinking to the level of an internet troll. All the praise hands for Blake Lively.

Why I’m Planning to Give Birth Without an Audience

$
0
0

I’ve always thought that having an entourage at the hospital during birth — or shortly after — is a bit ridiculous. I mean, I understand that families want to share in the new parents’ joy, but would a visit a few days later hurt? When I got pregnant, I knew for sure that an audience wasn’t for me.

As I learned more about how stress can impact the progression of labor, I have become even more guarded about who will be with me when I deliver in the coming weeks — including who will visit in the hours after. In my gut, I know that even certain people lingering in the waiting room will stress me out, but it has nothing to do with how I feel about my loved ones and more to do with the concept of having an audience.

More: Siblings in the delivery room

I’ve tried turning to other women as I figured out my next steps and found that there’s no single answer. Some women love the rush of guests, while others I’ve spoken with look back and wish they had been a little more restrictive on who was there. They say that certain guests were overwhelming or upsetting and took away from much-needed bonding time, interrupted breastfeeding during critical phases and distracted them from speaking with helpful nurses.

In an effort to make an informed decision that suited me, I also turned to studies.

During a recent childbirth class when the midwife told us “labor is not a spectator sport.” My husband wanted our birth to just be him, me and our midwife, but I wanted to go a step further – I didn’t want a crowd after delivery as well.

One of the reasons I think he comprehends my anxiety is because he knows I have panic disorder and a searing fear of hospitals. When I was able to explain that stress clinically can have a negative effect on birth and the health of our baby, he seemed to really understand and respect my wishes. After all, I will be the one delivering.

Guard your oxytocin

Many experts agree that labor can be longer, more complicated or more painful when women have an unwanted audience — even if that includes family members herding in the hospital waiting room and not all up in your va-jay-jay. If you’re like me and get overwhelmed with crowds to begin with, you may fall into this category.

More: Oh baby! Woman gets the surprise of her life in the delivery room

In The Positive Birth Book: A New Approach to Pregnancy, Birth and the Early Weeks, author Milli Hill talks about the vital role of oxytocin — what she calls the “shy hormone” — in the birth process. She says oxytocin likes “darkness, safety, quiet, warmth, privacy, love.” It doesn’t like “interruptions, bright lights, strangers, cold, fear, unfamiliarity.” Some women aren’t as sensitive to those stressors, but others are, and the impact of them can hamper birth efforts.

According to the National Childbirth Trust, even switching rooms can reduce oxytocin levels and slow labor. If a woman in labor is stressed, hormones such as adrenaline can inhibit the release of oxytocin.

Hill advises women to listen to their intuition and guard their oxytocin; in other words, if you feel like an audience may impede it, speak up — it could mean the difference between smooth labor or stalled labor... or even needing a C-section.

“What is needed for effective labor with lowered levels of stress hormones is a comfortable, dimly lit, cozy space that allows you to access the part of your primitive brain that sets up the process of hormonal ebb and flow and facilitates the smoothest functioning of the normal birth process,” Ina May Gaskin writes in Ina May’s Guide to Childbirth. “We share this need for privacy during labor with virtually all other mammals.”

You still need that oxytocin after you deliver, and postpartum visitors could disrupt it then as well. So if you feel like you need to limit visitors after delivery, you’re within your rights. Allow yourself to be flexible with what you need, and make sure your partner understands this. It’s not about getting your way (which you deserve anyway); it’s about the health of mom and baby — even if mom is being a little “paranoid” or “selfish.”

I like to tell loved ones that I’m really going to need them long after the baby is born... in the weeks after when the visitors (and their casseroles) stop showing up. That may change, but I have grown more in tune with my wants and needs and am not afraid to express them. The real gems in my life understand this — something I am eternally grateful for.

Sorry — not sorry

The concept of turning loved ones away gets tough when family is involved, especially if they’ve religiously traveled to the hospital to welcome previous clan members. That’s when speaking up is imperative, but do it ahead of time or at least plan for a brief, firm explanation when you feel it needs to be given. If you’re lucky enough to be delivering somewhere that restricts the number of visitors for you, explaining it may be easier. Otherwise, watch out because you could be in a crowd-birthing situation — again, cool if you’re into that sort of thing.

Keep in mind that not everyone understands that the stress of others can impact labor. They may think because others want visitors that you should too. Some people may actually be angry at you — a good indication they shouldn’t be there anyway (if they stress you while you’re pregnant, imagine what they’ll be like during or after delivery!)

With all our best-laid plans, you may change your mind about having an audience at the last minute. Mommy, this is the one time your wishes should come first — and anyone who doesn’t understand shows they do not have your best interests at heart.

More: I barred everyone from seeing my baby's birth, and I'm so glad I did

In the end, this isn’t about restricting who visits and who doesn’t. It’s about stepping into your own power to decide what you want during your birth experience — and ultimately, what’s best for your little one. That includes what’s best for you too.
