Battle of the flicks: Oz VS. Dead Man Down

What's better? Going on a dazzling adventure with James Franco for two hours, or exploring the gritty streets of New York with Colin Farrell? Tough call!

Oz the Great and Powerful

Oz The Great and Powerful

Oz The Great and Powerful is a 3D adventure film that imagines the origins of the wizard of Oz. Partly inspired by the Oz books by Frank L. Baum and partly referencing the 1939 movie The Wizard of Oz, the stunning graphics make watching this movie feel like a ride at Disneyland: fluid, surprising and sometimes scary but overall, really fun.

But don’t expect a weepy teen, coming of age in ruby slippers. Oz, played by James Franco, is a complex man who spends his time in Kansas chasing ladies and doing magic tricks for a traveling circus.

When he gets to the Land of Oz, however, he’s in over his head with three beautiful and possibly evil witches, played by Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams. Oz quickly realizes that playing with their hearts has serious consequences.

Dead Man Down

Dead Man Down

Dead Man Down is from Danish director Niels Arden Oplev and Swedish actress Noomi Rapace, who brought us the original The Girl with the Dragon Tattoo. This gritty crime drama also stars Colin Farrell, who gives a strikingly rich performance as a man with a tragic vendetta.

Noomi Rapace also stuns with her portrayal of a woman whose face has been scarred in a terrible accident and wants revenge on the man who did it to her. These two broken people meet up to discover that revenge may not be all it's cracked up to be.

asian beef steak

All Asian countries have their own wide range of dishes. This one comes from the Philippine kitchen to your table in just a few minutes using basic ingredients found in your fridge: soy sauce, lemon, beef and onions. Pair it with steamed white rice for a simple dinner.

Asian beef steak with soy sauce recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound beef sirloin, thinly sliced
  • 1/2 cup soy sauce
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon
  • 1 large onion, sliced into rings
  • Extra-virgin olive oil
  • Pepper

Directions:

  1. Mix soy sauce, lemon and pepper in a bowl. Taste and adjust. Add beef slices and marinate for at least half an hour.
  2. In a saucepan with oil, saute onion rings for 3 minutes. Transfer to a bowl. Set aside.
  3. Drain marinated beef and save marinade.
  4. In the same pan where you sauteed the onions, saute beef slices until brown on both sides. Transfer to a bowl. Set aside.

  8. Serve with hot steamed basmati or jasmine white rice.

OWN star Lisa Ling gave birth to a baby girl on Friday in California. The new bundle of joy is named Jett Ling Song.

Lisa Ling

Another Hollywood baby came into the world on Friday. A baby girl was born to Our America host Lisa Ling and her husband, oncologist Dr. Paul Song.

Baby Jett Ling Song was born in Santa Monica, California, at 1:24 p.m. weighing 6 pounds, 6 ounces. Naturally, Jett's parents are over the moon.

In a statement on Friday, the couple said, "The proud parents are enjoying the first day of parenthood and are looking forward to bringing their daughter home."

It was not an easy road for Ling after she experienced a miscarriage in 2010. The journalist shared her experience and emotional pain with other women after losing the couple's first child.

She created a website called Secret Society of Women as a safe haven where women could freely share their thoughts, not only about miscarriage but other female issues as well.

Lisa Ling partners with IKEA to put education first >>

Ling announced her baby news on Anderson Live back in October by bringing along Jett's sonogram and revealing the sex of her baby. The OWN star was careful throughout her pregnancy because of her prior miscarriage.

She told Access Hollywood Live last fall, "I've just been trying to be very, very cautious about everything... with diet, with exercise."

The good news is that the entire Ling-Song family is happy and healthy.

Welcome to the world, Baby Jett!

Sarah Chalke shows you How to Live with Your Parents

She baaaaaack! Sarah Chalke stars in an all-new sitcom, and we're so stoked!

How to Live with Your Parents

With the premiere less than a month away, we think it's time you had a look at How to Live with Your Parents .

Another different spin on family-based sitcoms>>

The brilliant new comedy stars Sarah Chalke as Polly. Recently divorced and now a single mom, where can Polly turn during a rocky transitional period in an economic climate that has even the most functional people flailing? To Mom and Dad, of course. In a desperate attempt at stability, Polly scoops up her daughter and moves back home.

Sarah Chalke is brilliant at playing roles like Polly, a hopeful person in a hapless situation. That was often the essence of her two previous major characters, Elliot and Stella . Plus, she now has plenty of experience at being a mom.

New show: Monday Mornings>>

In this situation, Polly is exactly that. Yet, she's also a little more high-strung than the characters Chalke has played before. Polly is a modern but sheltering parent. She wants to be there for her daughter's every screeching halt, ready to throw out her mom arm and keep her little girl from flying through a window or crashing to the floor.

Polly's laid-back parents are the opposite, though. Her dad, Max , and her mother, Elaine , try to encourage her to be more hands-off and to let her daughter learn from her own mistakes. What ensues will be a constant tug-of-war between the old way and the new way, Polly's way and her parents' way. And along the way, she still has to deal with Julian, the ex-husband .

Goodwin Games: Family comedy or family drama?>>

How to Live with Your Parents is the first comedy from Claudia Lonow and is loosely based on her own life.

During a recent interview with The Hollywood Reporter, Lonow explained the extra-long title, saying, "[The title] got the most laughs because people really relate to it. Like I was driving to the lot and I was telling a guard that I'm working on How to Live with Your Parents , and he said, 'Oh my God, I can't wait to see that. My kid just moved in and I can't get him out and that's my worst nightmare.' Or I went in for a checkup with my doctor, and she was telling me that her daughter and her husband and their kid just moved in. So, I mean that it just seemed to resonate with people, and they tested it and it was tested well."

A sequel to the newly released Oz the Great and Powerful is in the works.

Oz the Great and Powerful

Oz the Great and Powerfulhas just made its debut, but a follow-up is already in the works.

Variety reports that a sequel is currently being written byMitchell Kapner, who co-wrote the Sam Raimi–directed film with David Lindsay-Abaire.

That's not surprising considering the colorful fantasy flick — starring James Franco, Mila Kunis, Rachel Weisz and Michelle Williams — is already on track to become a box office smash.

The Hollywood Reporter notes that Oz the Great and Powerful, which earned favorable reviews from critics, took in a whopping $2 million during Thursday night showings. Studio execs are confident that the whimsical film will top the box office this weekend.

It is unclear which actors will be returning for the sequel, but according to Kunis, there's a strong possibility that all of the stars could return.

"We're all signed on for sequels," the actress told E! on Thursday.

Weisz also seemed to be on board, telling the site, "If there is one, I'd love to be in it."

All details surrounding the plot of the next film are currently under wraps.

How Oz The Great and Powerful differs from the original flick>>

Released by Disney, Oz the Great and Powerful serves as a prequel to the beloved tale The Wonderful Wizard of Oz. Based on the 1900 book by L. Frank Baum, The Wonderful Wizard of Oz was adapted for the screen in 1939 and has since become one of the most well-known works in film history.

Emma Watson vamps it up in The Bling Ring

Emma Watson shows audiences a new side to her acting range as she vamps it up in the trailer for the upcoming film The Bling Ring.

Emma Watson

It looks like Hermione is all grown up. On Friday, A24 released the trailer for its new film, The Bling Ring, starring 22-year-old Emma Watson. The trailer shows a more adult side to the Harry Potter actress, who grew up over the franchise's eight films.

The new film, directed by Oscar winner Sofia Coppola, is based on a true story of a band of California teens who terrorized young Hollywood stars in 2008 and 2009 by breaking into their homes and stealing expensive items from them. Some of the victims included Paris Hilton, Rachel Bilson, Orlando Bloom and Lindsay Lohan. The film is adapted from the Nancy Jo Sales book The Suspects Wore Louboutins.

The trailer showcases Watson, who plays the ringleader of the $3 million caper, vamping for the cameras in a way audiences have never seen her do before. The actress clearly is the main focus of the film under the guidance of Coppola, who always brings out the best in her young female stars. In movies like The Virgin Suicides with Kirsten Dunst and Lost in Translation with Scarlett Johansson, moviegoing audiences were treated to the director's signature filmmaking style of featuring a discontented female protagonist.

In addition to Watson, the film stars Gavin Rossdale, Taissa Farmiga, Leslie Mann and Paris Hilton. Yes, Hilton is a part of both the film and the true story.

Watson was last seen in 2012's beloved The Perks of Being a Wallflower. She is also rumored to be eyeing the title role in Cinderella.

The Bling Ring is expected to hit the big screen on June 14.

Danielle Fishel, best known as Topanga from Boy Meets World, is all grown up and showing off her sexy figure on Maxim's latest cover. Find out how her character got that curious name, as well as the star's reaction to those given the moniker in real life!

Danielle Fishel

Would a Topanga by any other name be as beloved as the Boy Meets World character played by Danielle Fishel? Leading up to the reboot of the show, the sitcom star is showing off her all-grown-up figure on the cover of Maxim's latest issue and revealing the history behind her character.

EW interview reveals new Girl Meets World details>>

Shedding light on how Topanga, whom we'll get to see as a mom when Girl Meets World debuts, got that unforgettable name, the 31-year-old explained, "Michael Jacobs, who created Boy Meets World, says he was driving down the highway when production called and said, 'We need a name for this character!'"

Put on the spot, the executive producer blurted out the first name he saw — even though it was the name of a canyon!

Fishel explained, "He happened to be driving past Topanga Canyon, so he said, 'Topanga.' He says that if they had called him two miles later, I would've been named Canoga, which is the next exit."

Man Candy Mondays: Ben Savage as Cory Matthews >>

A number of times, Danielle Fishel has bumped into real-life people named Topanga.

"People will tweet me, and I've had family members who have met other Topangas," she shared. "It's crazy and it's flattering, but I never know what to say when they're showing me their beautiful little girls. I'm like, 'Really? Topanga!'"

One person who didn't take to that particular name trend is Danielle Fishel's "first-ever girl crush,"Tiffani Thiessen! Speaking of the Saved by the Bell star, who is now mom to daughter Harper, the Maxim poser admitted, "I remember watching her and thinking, 'Nobody in the world could possibly be as beautiful as she is.' She's still stunning."

Can't argue with that! Girl Meets World will premiere on Disney Channel later this year.

Would you ever consider naming your daughter Topanga?

Footage from the highly anticipated Star Trek Into Darkness has left fans wanting more.

Star Trek Into Darkness

If you're one of many filmgoers who can barely contain their excitement over the forthcoming Star Trek Into Darkness, rest assured that the film appears to live up to the hype.

The Guardian reports that about 30 minutes of the highly anticipated film was shown to a group of film reporters at the BFI Imax in London on Friday, and it has left many elated. The footage is said to be action packed and has pleased a number of hard-core Trekkies.

The UK outlet Radio Times calls the scenes shown "spectacular and gripping," while Den of Geek notes that the sci-fi flick "looks like a sequel done right."

What the footage doesn't reveal is who Benedict Cumberbatch's villain character is. Fortunately, fans aching to know more details will only have to wait another two months.

Directed by J.J. Abrams, the film also stars Chris Pine, Zachary Quinto and Zoe Saldana.

The film serves as a follow-up to the acclaimed 2009 film Star Trek, which earned praise from critics and grossed an impressive $385 million worldwide. The top-secret sequel centers on a deadly attack against the Enterprise that threatens the state of the world. In response, Captain Kirk and his team must stop at nothing to defeat a criminal mastermind. Compared to the first installment, which was filled with light-hearted and comedic moments, Star Trek Into Darkness appears to have a much darker tone.

Star Trek Into Darkness is set to be released on May 17.

Which witch
is the hottest?

Michelle Williams, Rachel Weisz and Mila Kunis will beguile audiences on the big screen in Oz the Great and Powerful, but when it comes to sex appeal, Mila is broom lengths ahead of her sister witches. Could any other stars work their magic like Kunis?

In Oz the Great and Powerful, Disney's upcoming Wizard of Oz remix, Ukranian beauty Mila Kunis plays Theodora — a beautiful but unworldly witch who only wants peace to prevail. She is flanked by her sisters — the slightly sinister Evanora, played by Rachel Weisz, and the good witch Glinda, played by Michelle Williams. And, while both Weisz and Williams are stunning stars, neither holds a candle to Kunis when it comes to sheer sexiness.

Kunis built a strong fan base during her time on That ‘70s Show, but it wasn't until she starred opposite Jason Segel in Forgetting Sarah Marshall that audiences began to take notice of Kunis'... ahem... physical assets — thanks largely to an abundance of cleavage-baring ensembles. In 2010, her sexually charged role as Lily in Black Swan cemented her status as one of Hollywood's hottest actresses and earned her Golden Globe and SAG award nominations.

Since then, nary a sexiest-celeb list has debuted without the presence of this pretty, pint-sized star. In 2011, she was GQ's "Knockout of the Year." Last year, she ranked No. 3 on Maxim's "Hot 100" list, No. 9 on FHM Magazine's "Hot 100" list and No. 16 on Guyspeed.com's list of the "100 Most Mind-Numbingly Hot Women of 2012"— not to mention being crowned Esquire's "Sexiest Woman Alive." And this year, she's already secured the No. 2 spot on both Men's Health magazine's "100 Hottest Women of All Time" and Askmen.com's "Top 99 Women for 2013."

So, what's one more title? We think Mila Kunis makes the hottest witch in Hollywood, but could another actress upstage her? We put a few other Tinseltown beauties to the test...

Scott Disick insults Kourtney Kardashian over her weight

Is it ever OK for a man to comment on his girlfriend's "excess" weight? We say no, but Scott Disick thinks differently.

Kourtney Kardashian and Scott Disick

It seems like Scott Disick is always straddling the line between being a doting father and a complete and utter d-bag.

He definitely jumped into full d-bag territory on the new episode of Kourtney and Kim Take Miami. In the episode — airing Sunday — Scott tells the mom of two that he wants her to weigh 93 pounds.

Can you help Kourtney Kardashian's very ill cousin? >>

"Do you know what you're supposed to weigh for your average weight for your height?" he asks the 5-foot Kourtney. She goes on estimate her weight as being around 105 before he asks how much she weighed when they first met.

"Like, 95," she says.

"I feel like 93 is the dream," Disick says with a sigh.

Actually, it's not: Kourtney is at a healthy BMI for her weight at 20.5. A tiny 93 pounds would put her BMI at an underweight 18.2.

Did Scott Disick stage elaborate sex scam to steal from girls? >>

But, he continues: "Your body was banging when I saw you on the beach with that little a**."

Ugh. Just, ugh.

Kourtney doesn't seem phased by it, though.

"How do you feel when he's like, 'I want you at 95 pounds'?" sister Kim Kardashian asks.

Hot mama! Kourtney Kardashian loves her fuller frame >>

"It doesn't bother me because I have to do what's best for me," she replies. "I can't compare myself to supermodels."

That still doesn't make it right.

Original Transformers star making a cameo in sequel?

Will a familiar face appear in next year's Transformers? Actor Josh Duhamel is hinting at a possible return. He may reprise the role of William Lennox, the character he played in the first trilogy.

Josh Duhamel Michael Bay is hard at work preparing the next chapter of his Transformers series. After directing the original billion-dollar trilogy, he's set for a fourth installment. This time, the film will have a new cast led by Oscar nominee Mark Wahlberg.

Transformers 4 logo released, Wahlberg cast>>

The first Transformers changed the careers of its stars. It made Shia LaBeouf and Megan Fox overnight sensations, while Josh Duhamel became an instant action hero.

Michael Bay giving Transformersa major makeover>>

We can't imagine Bay quitting the first cast cold turkey. Therefore, we weren't surprised when Duhamel admitted that he could appear in the next sequel.

Michael Bay confirms new Transformers trilogy>>

The actor told The Hollywood Reporter, "They're going younger," for the new Transformers. But that doesn't mean he can't step in and say hello. He revealed that he and Bay have discussed his inclusion in the film.

"[Michael] said he wants to put me in it someplace. I don't know if he was just saying that because he had me on the phone and he felt obligated or what, but you know what? I got to do three of those. It changed my career, it changed my life getting to be a part of something that big, so I'm grateful for even doing the first three of them," Duhamel said.

Fingers crossed that Duhamel and Bay make it happen. He was our favorite part of the Transformers trilogy. It would be a good nod to the previous films.

Transformers 4 is scheduled to hit theaters June 27, 2014.

Understanding multiple sclerosis

Rising to the challenge
and beyond

Being a parent is never an easy job, but adding the challenge of a debilitating disorder such as multiple sclerosis makes the days that much harder. Hear the inspiring story of how this mom is rising to the challenge.

March is National Multiple Sclerosis Awareness month. MS is a chronic disease that affects the brain and spinal column and is twice as likely to appear in women than men. According to the Multiple Sclerosis Foundation, more than 2.5 million people around the world are living with MS. The symptoms take a toll on the body and can make keeping up with the busy lifestyle of a mom very difficult. SheKnows had a chance to talk with Tracy, the mother of a preschool girl; Tracy is living with MS. Tracy shares openly and honestly what life as a mother with MS is like.

SheKnows: When were you diagnosed with Multiple Sclerosis?

Tracy: I was officially diagnosed in August 1999.

SK: What were your first symptoms?

"An MS diagnosis is not a death sentence. Does it alter your life? Yes, but there is no reason why life can't be normal and fun."

T: My first symptom was in 1997. I had a grand mal seizure for no apparent reason that wiped out my short-term memory. Unfortunately, I was in graduate school, which meant that I no longer remember the majority of what I had learned, and despite my best efforts I had to take a medical leave of absence. I then worked with a therapist to improve my memory, got a job doing data entry and later went on to work as an administrative assistant for a firm in the legal field.

After that I was told I had a seizure disorder, began medication and went on with my life. I got married and one day woke up with severe vertigo. I had no idea what was wrong and went to numerous doctors. I eventually ended up at the neurologist, who said that he had thought I had MS, but he needed more than one relapse to officially diagnose me. We did a spinal tap, an MRI and I then started on Copaxone, which is a daily medication that I inject.

SK: What is the most challenging part about having MS?

T: Learning to live with the fact that there is no way to know when a relapse will occur.

SK: How does MS interfere with your daily life as a mom?

T: My daughter is very energetic and always want to play and do things with me. Often she can run faster than me, or she doesn't understand that I need to sleep a lot more than she does. She doesn't understand that I'm not the energy machine that she is and that I need relaxation time. She also doesn't understand the shot I give myself every day and has said that when she grows up she'd like to give herself a shot like I do. I tried to explain, but I don't think a 3-year-old really understands that doing a shot isn't a good thing.

Tracy, husband and daughter

SK: Is there anything you would like people to know about MS?

T: An MS diagnosis is not a death sentence. Does it alter your life? Yes, but there is no reason why life can't be normal and fun. I'm in moms' clubs, I hike, bike ride, exercise and I worked until my daughter came along. By the way, we were unable to have biological children and we chose to adopt. My diagnosis with MS did not hold me back or stop me. I only stopped working because the thought of the long days combined with raising my daughter and running our household seemed overwhelming for not much money after day-care expenses.

Parenting with a chronic illness>>

SK: What can others do to support a friend or relative with the disorder?

T: Have sympathy for their fatigue, since MS is not obvious. Unless someone's condition has gotten to the point where they are not independent, in a wheelchair, using a walker, etc., to the outsider the person looks perfectly normal and healthy. But their foot may be numb or they may have some other issue that is not obvious. Offer to run errands if they are house-bound because of a relapse. No one likes to have to beg for help, since with MS a plaque can occur anywhere and cause any number of things, ranging from vision loss and numbness to incontinence.

Should you avoid triclosan?

Woman washing hands

That antibacterial soap on your counter? It could be doing more harm than good, researchers say. A chemical used in many antibacterial products, triclosan, has been found to hurt muscle function. What does this mean?

Hidden danger in antibacterial products

When you lather up with antibacterial soap, you are most likely rubbing pesticide all over your skin. Really. Triclosan, a chemical used in antibacterial products, was first registered as a pesticide in 1969, according to the Environmental Protection Agency . And researchers at the University of California at Davis say that triclosan could be hurting your body — by making your muscles not function as well.

In a study published in the Proceedings of the National Academy of Sciences of the United States of America in July 2012, UC Davis researchers found that triclosan, which is found in a variety of products including hand soaps, deodorants, toys, trash bags and bedding, causes muscle function to decrease. “The effects of triclosan on cardiac function were really dramatic,” said Nipavan Chiamvimonvat, professor of cardiovascular medicine at UC Davis and a study co-author, in a UC Davis release.

Researching triclosan

"The effects of triclosan on cardiac function were really dramatic."

To delve into how triclosan may impact the human body, researchers conducted a variety of experiments mimicking daily triclosan exposure that humans experience. They found reduced heart function and reduced muscle strength, among other effects, in their experiments

“We were surprised by the large degree to which muscle activity was impaired in very different organisms, and in both cardiac and skeletal muscle,” said Bruce Hammock, a study co-author and professor in the UC Davis department of entomology, in a release. “You can imagine in animals that depend so totally on muscle activity that even a 10 percent reduction in ability can make a real difference in their survival.”

More research needed

The Food and Drug Administration and the EPA are delving deeper into the chemical and its risks, through new assessments. Meanwhile, researchers say that the use of it needs to be greatly restricted going forward.

The EPA, which last assessed triclosan in 2008, is undergoing what it calls "a comprehensive review of triclosan," specifically taking into account new studies on the effects it has on the endocrine system. including thyroid and estrogen hormones. The "EPA and FDA are collaborating on research projects that will help both agencies to better characterize the endocrine-related effects of triclosan, including toxicological effects, human relevance and the doses at which they occur to determine if levels of human exposure are safe or not. The agency will pay close attention to this ongoing research and will amend the regulatory decision if the science supports such a change," says the EPA in a recent online fact sheet.

What should you do?

Although no formal action has been taken to curb the use of triclosan in hygiene products and products for the home, it's important that you consider what the research suggests and make an informed decision about the products you use. There are alternatives available that do not contain triclosan— something you can determine by giving product labels a close look.

Music review: Phoenix's "Entertainment"

Put on your dancing shoes, pals. Phoenix has a new single, and they're actually earning some attention in America.

Phoenix

You know who's awesome? Phoenix — and not just because they're from the illustrious city of Versailles, France.

True story: Once upon a time, there were four incredibly French and rather good-looking men who decided to get together and play music. While Europe practically exploded with love for the crooning, twitching garçons, they went almost entirely unnoticed in America — as all the best bands do at first.

C'est la vie

They managed to pay their bills just fine without us, of course. One of their first singles, "Too Young," was even featured in the 2003 Scarlett Johansson and Bill Murray film Lost in Translation. The film was directed by Sofia Coppola, who would later marry one of Phoenix's band members. Later, when Phoenix released their second album, Alphabetical, a special mix of their song "Victim of the Crime" was made for a Dior Homme runway show. You might say it was an Haute Couture mix.

Thomas Mars

Oo la la!

The three chanteurs didn't get their first major American break until 2009, when their song "1901" was featured not only in a commercial for the Cadillac SRX but also in a montage for the Green Bay Packers during that year's Super Bowl. "1901" was from their most recent album, Wolfgang Amadeus Phoenix. The commercial and their appearance on SNL would be the factors that sent music fans flocking to local music stores to pick up the album.

Et maintenant?

After a few years spent living life and hanging out in the recording studio, they finally announced that they were ready to grace us with yet another album. Enter Bankrupt!, which is slated for release on April 23. It's being hailed as something slightly more experimental. Daniel Glass, the owner of the band's American record label, Glassnote, told Billboard that the album would be "revolutionary."

If they were going for "experimental," it's not to be found in the album's first single, though. "Entertainment" is as dance pop as it gets. Singer Thomas Mars' voice continues in the bubbly, uneven vocal lines he refined in Wolfgang. The music, meanwhile, is this ebb and flow of low, muted bass. When the drums are there, they're loud and engaging. They seem designed to put you in a dancing trance, which is exactly what they do. You only notice their occasional ease-off if you're looking for it. Otherwise, you're too lost in the keyboards and Mars' vocals to make any sense of what you've witnessed until the song is over and you're trying to find the repeat button. It's as delicious as the pineapple on the cover of the upcoming Bankrupt!.

In other words, c'est si bon! Listen for yourself...

Glossary: Dance, mes amis! = Dance, my friends!; Garçons = boys; C'est la vie! = That's life!; Et maintenant? = And now?; C'est si bon! = It's so good!

Noomi Rapace in Dead Man Down: Revenge isn't always sweet

Swedish actress Noomi Rapace re-teams with her Girl With the Dragon Tattoo director Niels Arden Oplev for the dark film Dead Man Down. Find out what Rapace learned about revenge while making the film.

Noomi Rapace plays a girl with a mission in Dead Man Down. She blackmails her assassin neighbor, Victor , to kill the man responsible for her awful facial scars. But ultimately, Rapace's Beatrice finds that avenging her past doesn't make her life any better than it was before.

"I think that the message behind this movie is that revenge — and avenging people — it won't make anything easier," Rapace told SheKnows in a recent interview. "It's not going to make anything better. It's not going to give you that salvation."

The film isn't all dark, though. Rapace added that it also gives viewers a good lesson about living your best life, no matter the circumstances.

"It's never too late to kind of go back and live again... to dream again... even though you think everything is destroyed," she continued. "I think it's a beautiful message."

Deep meanings aside, we had to know what it's like working with the Irish bad boy Farrell. Well, he's not such a bad boy anymore.

"I loved working with him. He's an amazing person," Rapace told us. "So down to earth, so funny. [He's] very passionate and hardworking."

And their chemistry is obvious in Dead Man Down, which is in theaters now.

Colin Farrell did a lot of Spinning for Dead Man Down

Colin Farrell talks to SheKnows about his prep for his new movie, Dead Man Down, and what was so beautiful about filming on the Philadelphia waterfront.

Colin Farrell didn't have to draw from personal experience to play an assassin in Dead Man Down — and he's quite happy about that.

"His experience is incredibly extreme, and I can gladly say I don't have that much of a drawing line between what he's been through and what I've been through in my life," he told SheKnows of playing Victor, a man seeking revenge for the death of his wife and daughter. "Fortunately."

Well, that's why they call it acting, right?

The Irish actor did do "loads of Spinning and lifting weights" to get in physical shape for the role, but he approached the character by thinking about what was in the scorned man's mind.

Battle of the flicks: Oz vs. Dead Man Down>>

"I imagined Victor as somebody who kept himself — his body — incredibly clean," Farrell said. "Someone who is very well-read and smarter than he let on to the gang. He would shun any pleasure or any joy in his life."

Farrell added that filming in an old Navy hangar was quite serious but that the area outside the hangar where their trailers were — an area they dubbed Trailerland — was a lot of fun.

"We were right on the water in this hangar," Farrell said of filming in Philadelphia. "When you went outside, that's where we had our trailers. Noomi's trailer door was always open, and she had French music playing, and my door was always open."

In the middle was a firepit, and they'd all gather to hang out and listen to music.

"It was really quite lovely," he recalled. "But then, when you opened the heavy metal door [in the hangar], the mood was kinda serious."

So, what does he hope viewers will take away from the film?

"I hope that they don't want their money back," he joked.

Don't think that'll happen, Colin!

Terrence Howard on Dead Man Down: You pay for revenge

There was a lot of competition in Dead Man Down— both on set and off. Find out what Terrence Howard did in his downtime to help other actors build their characters.

Terrence Howard has an interesting process to prepare for roles in films like Dead Man Down.

"I only read the script up until like 70 percent of it, so I'm always in suspense of what's going to occur," he told SheKnows in a recent interview. "Because if you know how your day is going to go, you don't approach it naturally."

"There's nothing more unnatural than an attempt to look natural," he continued, adding that being natural in a character allows him to "create the dynamics that allow the audience to empathize [with the character]."

Battle of the flicks: Oz vs. Dead Man Down >>

Howard plays dirty real estate mogul Alphonse in the Niels Arden Oplev–directed film. Alphonse enlists Colin Farrell's assassin, Victor, to carry out a vendetta. What he doesn't know is that Victor is also seeking retribution against Alphonse for the death of his wife and daughter years earlier. Howard told SheKnows that he liked playing a flawed character.

"It was the fact that he wasn't that great of a guy," Howard said of what attracted him to the role. "He reminded me of the younger incarnations of myself."

Not because the actor's a killer, but because Alphonse wants to get what he wants without really earning it.

"When you consider that you have some right or entitlement for happiness without paying for it," he said of the similarities between young Terrence and Alphonse. "You have to earn your piece."

And if you think it's serious onscreen, the seriousness also translated into the behind the scenes action.

"The first thing with men is there's always competition. There are always alpha males walking about," he said of the mood off set.

Howard added that he liked to play chess with some of his big, burly co-stars — but not for fun and games.

"Off camera, we'd play chess," he told us. "I'm a bit of a monster and my son is a bit of a monster, so I brought my son up there, and I let a couple of guys beat me. Then I let my son come in there and tear them a new..."

The point? To keep them on their toes.

"When someone thinks they've got you figured out and then [you] show them you've been playing them, then they watch you from two or three more dimensions," he said.

Sounds intense.

Ultimately, Howard believes the message behind the film — that revenge isn't always so sweet — is just as intense.

"Anytime you're unwilling to let go of the past and seek revenge, you're always going to pay," he said.

Noted, Terrence.

Jack learns the truth about Amanda's death and begins to plot his own revenge mission against the Greysons. Also, a blast from Emily's past could cause more trouble in the Hamptons.

Emily tells Jack about Amanda's death

This week's episode of Revenge was a tearjerker. Not only does Emily have to deal with the loss of her best friend, but she has to tell Jack that his wife isn't coming back. Heartbreaking.

Emily VanCamp's red carpet style >>

Jack gets the news in his hospital bed and immediately after he does Conrad shows up to offer his condolences. And his money. He doesn't know that Jack knows about the computer and the Greysons involvement with David Clarke's murder. Instead, Conrad tries to sweet talk him and become a shoulder to lean on in his dark time. How low can Conrad go?

As soon as Jack returns home he goes on the hunt to find that computer. He's on his own revenge mission now. Even though he feels like he couldn't trust Amanda, all he wants is to find a way to make Conrad pay for her death. What he does find, however, is a little more hurtful than he bargained for.

Funny kids give their own version of Revenge>>

Jack finds letters that reveal of the truth about Amanda and Emily's relationship. He learns that they practically grew up together, were like sisters, and that Emily also did time in the detention center. He draws his own conclusion that Emily knew what Amanda was up to with the Greysons . He's furious, feels betrayed and even more devastated to learn that his friend lied to him and would put his wife in harm's way.

Madeleine Stowe talks about Revenge on the red carpet >>

At Amanda's funeral, Emily gives a beautiful eulogy and she is tempted to tell Jack the full truth. Nolan tells her not to. He wouldn't be able to handle it right now. He's probably right, but when Jack does find out, he'll never forgive her.

A surprise guest shows up after the funeral that could mean trouble for Amanda. Amanda Clarke's brother from one of the homes she lived in heard about her death and made his way to the Hamptons. From the preview of next week's episode he just seems to know that Emily Thorne is the real Amanda Clarke.

So many lies, deaths and coverups. Is Emily's revenge plan really worth it?
