Seems like vacations come and go faster than you can say, "relax." Heading back to the real world after a great vacay can be hard, but it doesn't have to be impossible.

Back to life!

Follow a few tips to help ensure your return from paradise isn't too painful.

Welcome home?

When vacation ends, the return to your "regular life" can be difficult. You'll probably head home to things like an empty refrigerator, loads of unpacking and laundry and the return to work and bunches of emails. Coming back from time away doesn't have to put you in a tailspin. Follow these tips for a smooth trip from paradise back to the real world.

Check out the benefits of hiring a travel agent >>

Don't pack it in: Build in some time at home

There's nothing worse than feeling rushed before work, but especially after time off. Plan to build in a day or two, depending on the length of your time away, to be at home before heading into the office. If you want to take a leisurely peek at work emails to help fend off overload on your return, go for it. If you need time to hit the dry cleaner or shop for food for work lunches, you'll have it.

Review these tips to prevent jet lag >>

Deal with jet lag

When you're traveling long distances across time zones by plane, you might suffer from jet lag. Jet lag disturbs your internal biological rhythm, causing you to be out of sync with the time at your destination. Some say to allow for one day of recovery for every time zone you pass through.

To help alleviate jet lag, stay hydrated; avoid excessive alcohol, caffeine and tobacco; avoid naps for longer than two hours when you reach your destination; and try to make some time for the sunshine — spend a few hours outside in the afternoon or an hour outside in the morning to help you adjust.

With help from the U.K.'s leading sleep expert, Dr. Chris Idzikowski, British Airways has developed a Jet Lag Calculator to help you with tips on how to deal with jet lag.

Consider these hotel fitness programs for healthy travel >>

Get back into your exercise routine

Maybe you made a few too many trips to the buffet line on your cruise, indulged in the local beer a bit much or ate out more than you intended. No use fussing over those things now that you're home. Of course the best plan would be to fit in time for regular exercise and eating right while you're away, but that's not always possible.

Learn how to be a smart traveler >>

Now that you're home, get back into your normal, healthy routines. If you typically hit the gym for a certain amount of time, go for it. If you find it's more than you can take on right away, don't despair: Work your way up to your regular time at they gym, if needed. If you're used to going for 60 minutes, start out by going for 30 minutes for a few days, then 45, until you're back at 60. Gradually working your way back to your normal workouts is better than simply giving up and not going at all. If your normal classes seem boring now that you're back, this is a great time to try something new!

Prioritize, have patience and plan an escape

Recognize that, no matter what you have to get back to, you can't have it all running like clockwork again, in one day. Prepare yourself by planning to have patience with projects and with others in order to keep yourself on the right track. Make a list to prioritize your to-dos, and check them off as you complete them.

According to Road and Travel, the hustle and bustle of being back after being away might get overwhelming at some point. That's when you need a vacation… reminder. Peek at some of your vacation photos, take a break and go for a walk in the park or let yourself drift away for a few minutes to the peacefulness and fun that was vacation.

Where is Olympic triple jumper Phillips Idowu?

$

The same day U.K.'s The Globe and Mail named Phillips Idowu among the six athletes to watch at the Olympics , it looks like there may be no watching the standout triple jumper. Period. He's gone MIA before Tuesday's triple jump prelim.

Phillips Idowu missing

British gold medal contender in the triple jump, Phillips Idowu, has yet to check in to the Athlete's Village, and has yet to tell even his coach where he's at.

According to London's Evening Standard, Idowu has had no contact with Aston Moore for two weeks.

Time is running out for U.K. athletics leadership to find one of the biggest stars of the London Olympics; triple jump prelims start Tuesday, with finals slated for Thursday.

The same day The Globe and Mail named Idowu ones of its six "athletes to watch," it also reported that Idowu, who won a silver at worlds, cut off contact with Coach Moore after leaving the team's training camp in Portugal.

Usain Bolt bolts on big race >>

Last anyone knew of his whereabouts, Idowu was working with a private physiotherapist on a leg and hip injury.

"I find it bizarre, Aston finds it bizarre," U.K. Athletics head coach Charles van Commenee said. "We have to deal with the situation as it is presented to us."

"First, he has to show up, and we don’t know when he is going to show up," coach continued, by way of Evening Standard. "When he shows up, where he sleeps, we have no idea."

The missing athlete has also been slammed as a distraction to the U.K. team.

Rampant sex a distraction at Athlete's Village? >>

Wow. Some may find the lack of empathy from fellow team members a little bizarre.

Yahoo Sports explains some of the perceived insensitivity here by noting that Idowu has a history of meltdowns and personality clashes, starting with his feud with British athletic officials .

Idowu has a reputation, apparently, for erratic behavior — and for being a no-show at mandatory training events.

Being a no-show at a training camp is one thing. A no-show at the Olympics, when you're a world favorite? That should be cause for alarm — not just ire on the part of disgruntled teammates and sports officials.

Moms spill on how much they really sleep

Is your sleeping normal? Find out the truth about when moms really go to bed and how much sleep they are getting from these busy moms.

Ever wonder if other moms sleep as much as you do? Moms spilled their sleeping secrets, revealing a lot of sleep-deprived parents out there.

How much do moms really sleep?

"Typically, I get about five to six hours of sleep every night. Sometimes more, sometimes less. Most nights my daughter still wakes once for a quick nursing session," says Jessica Van Kirk of Colorado, whose daughter is nearly 13-months-old.
"I'm a mom of two and sleep about six and a half hours a night, which has been a treat these last few weeks, now that my four month old sleeps through the night," says Emily, a mom of two from Massachusetts.
"My son just turned two years old, and I haven't slept a full night since at least three months before he was born. Seriously, I think the best present someone could give me is a night in a hotel all by myself," says Jessica Roland of Oregon.

But don't worry — moms with older kids said they sleep closer to the 7-8 hour range.

Dangers of sleep deprivation

Parents — especially those with young children — are naturally sleep deprived. When you have a young child waking up in the night, it can be impossible to get a good night's rest. And sometimes that doesn't end for years. What are some of the risks and concerns that come with being constantly without enough sleep?

"I have lost most of my math ability"

"I have lost most of my math ability and memory capacity because I'm just so tired all the time, but I think I get five hours a night now. It has gotten better in the past few months, because those five hours are straight through. Previously, I was sleeping in two to three hour chunks," admits Roland. And she's not alone.

"Sleep deprivation is very common in new parents. This can lead to fatigue, poor concentration, depression, anxiety and irritability. We are now seeing links to heart disease, weight gain and high blood pressure due to lack of good sleep," says Dr. Mary B. Seger, author of The Parent Guidebook - How to Raise Happy, Healthy Children With Advice From a Mom and Nurse Practitioner.

When to worry

You are tired...but when does that constant exhaustion turn into something you should be concerned about? Segar says, when the lack of sleep causes an inability to do daily activities. Segar says that the symptoms, which can also mean depression, can be fixed. Go to bed early. Take naps. Give yourself a break from the perfectionism." Another recommendation is to ask for help. Ask your husband to get up with the baby or bring her to you so you can breast-feed in bed. He can also take her back to bed," says Segar.

For parents of school age kids

Having kids in school doesn't mean a more peaceful rest time, though. So what can you do — since napping is probably out of the question? "Routine and schedule is imperative! You are the parent, not your child's friend. Sleep is imperative for the health and happiness of parents and children. Having a set bedtime and naptime keeps everyone happy," says Seger.

Bottom Line

The bottom line is that if you are nearing utter sleep deprivation, ask for help and accept it. You need it to be a functioning adult.

Church World Services

What it is

Church World Services is an organization dedicated to eradicating hunger and poverty and promoting peace and justice around the world. CWS supports sustainable grassroots development, disaster relief, refugee assistance and educates and advocates on hunger-related issues. The organization promotes interfaith and intercultural collaboration in responding to these issues.

Why it was founded

In 1946, in the aftermath of World War II, CWS was founded with a simple mission: feed the hungry, clothe the naked, heal the sick, comfort the aged, shelter the homeless. Since then, it has worked tirelessly to do so. In 1946 and 1947, 11 million pounds of food, clothing, and medical supplies were collected by the organization and sent to war-torn Europe. They also set out to help resettle the large number of refugees left homeless by the war. With the success of these efforts, the CWS started Friendship Trains to collect American-grown food products such as corn, wheat, rice, and beans to be sent to needy places around the world. Since then, CWS has moved beyond solely providing first-aid relief to war-torn and disaster-ridden countries, and has spread its reach to places constantly in need of aid.

How it is making a difference

CWS has worked hard to satisfy its mission statement in its more than 60 years of existence. The organization has resettled about 450,000 people since it first began and works with each refugee individually to ensure they gain self-sufficiency. CWS also funds the Blankets+ campaign that provides blankets, tents, food and other essentials to those recently displaced by disaster. CWS encourages the donations of special kits such as school kits, hygiene kits and baby-care kits that are sent around the world to people in need. Another initiative is Water for All, which aims to provide clean water to communities in order to provide a clean water source for healthy nutrition and farming.

CROP Hunger Walk

CROP Hunger Walks take place around the country and are interfaith hunger education and fundraising events. The walk benefits efforts to stomp out hunger, both locally and abroad. For example, CWS expects to raise $4 million for hunger-elimination efforts in the U.S.

Once Upon a Time finally unveils its Captain Hook

$

Rumpelstiltskin and the Evil Queen had better watch out. Once Upon a Time has brought a new villain into the fold. The ABC fantasy has cast the role of Captain Hook, Peter Pan's archenemy.

Colin O'Donoghue

Last month, the cast of Once Upon a Time visited the mega-convention, San Diego Comic-Con. While there, they teased the audience with footage featuring a new character set to debut this season.

The figure's face was shrouded, so the identity was a mystery. But by the end of the video, he reached for a very telling object -- a hook!

At that point, fans knew what was next. Captain Hook is heading to Storybrooke. According to TVLine, Irish actor Colin O’Donoghue has been cast in the pivotal role.

Hook is described as "a handsome, fearsome and confident pirate ship captain." He "relishes every challenge and never backs down from a fight, whether the reward is power, riches, or women."

"He possesses the meticulous style and old-school manners of a proper gentleman, but beneath that veneer lies a vindictive enemy who will not rest until all his enemies have been defeated… and humiliated."

The dynamic of Storybrooke has drastically changed due to the events of the season finale. Mr. Gold brought magic back, which means both he and Regina could do some serious damage. They're already battling for villain of the year, so how will Hook change things?

O’Donoghue is a young actor with a few notable credits including The Rite and The Tudors. But for the most part, he's unknown to U.S. audiences. We're psyched to see his new and exciting take on such a dangerous character.

Check out Captain Hook's Comic-Con reveal below:

Get back your back-to-school routine

Before you know it, school will be back in session. Before the bell starts ringing, you need to get your family back on the school schedule. Check out these easy ways to reinstate the school time schedule.

Divide and conquer

Before school is back in session, sit down as a family to figure out school start and release times as well as times of any extracirucular activities your kids are involved in. Compare calendars with your partner to figure out which duties each of you will be handling. Figure out which days you’ll each be responsible for the school carpool, various after-school activities and study groups. Decide who will be taking care of dinner . Sharing responsibilities with your man will help ease the stress of the back-to-school routine.

Check out more tips for adjusting kids routine for school >>

Wake up call

A few weeks before school starts, start getting your kids back on the school year schedule. If you’ve been letting them stay up late and sleep in late, you’ll need to reset their clocks to ensure a smooth back-to-school transition. Remember, they’ll need a full night’s rest to be ready to tackle the school day head on.

Read up on tips to help reset your child’s internal clock before school starts >>

While we’re on the subject of waking up, you may need to set your alarm a few minutes earlier than usual to ensure you have enough time to get yourself ready for work and be available to help your kids get ready and fed before it’s time to head out the door.

Take shortcuts

Getting into the swing of the school routine may take a few weeks. Help ease the transition by making things as easy as possible. Prepare lunches the night before, plan on-the-go breakfasts your kids can munch in the car or on the bus on the way to class and have your kids set out their clothes the night before to eliminate last-minute chaos over what to wear come morning.

Give them a little free time

When your kids get home from class, give them a little break before starting them on their homework for the following day. After spending at least six hours in class, they need — and deserve — a refresher. Give your kids at least an hour after class to do what they enjoy so they can de-stress before hitting the books.

Heidi Montag says she's not actually an awful person

Heidi Montag is trying to make a Hollywood comeback -- and she's trying to distance herself from the spectacle she and husband Spencer Pratt made on MTV's The Hills. Do you believe her, or is she just blowing smoke?

Heidi Montag regrets The Hills

Think back to 2007 and 2008: MTV's The Hills ruled the airwaves, largely thanks to the constant headline-grabbing antics of Heidi Montag and her husband, Spencer Pratt. Then she turned into FrankenHeidi with her 10 plastic surgery procedures and failed pop career.

And then they just disappeared.

The once-rich couple spent away all the cash and had to move in with Pratt's parents in order to survive. Now, they're back — and Montag is trying to distance herself from her controversial past.

"I’ll never be able to be Heidi Montag, a normal person, again," she told Celebuzz in an exclusive interview. "What [I've] done is something that you can’t undo and that’s what I didn’t realize. It’s a very different life. It’s like a lifelong sentence."

These days, Montag said she's been doing a lot of soul searching.

"I’ve been… getting re-grounded and getting back to a normal life and figuring out what my goals and aspirations are," she added. "[Spencer and I] are not those people on The Hills anymore. We never were. It was more an acting role than anything else. But we played those character[sic] and when you start playing a character you kind of start to become more of a character."

As for her plastic surgeries? She doesn't go as far to say she regrets getting them, but she wouldn't repeat the experience.

"I wouldn’t do it again, that’s for sure," Montag told Celebuzz. "It was a lot more than I could have expected."

Why is Montag talking now? She's trying to get back into the business and has projects on tap for 2013.

"Unfortunately I can’t say what they are yet, but they are very different from anything I’ve done so I’m very excited. I don’t think I’ll ever go on that scripted reality drama type of thing again but definitely this has huge potential for long-term lifetime career."

Rosie O'Donnell's fiancee illness

Rosie O'Donnell's fiancee, Michelle Rounds, has been battling desmoid tumors. Though the comedienne likely already thought her love was one-in-a-million, it turns out she's technically three-in-a-million -- but not in a good way.

What are desmoid tumors? A description on the Desmoid Tumor Research Foundation site reads:

Desmoid tumors arise from connective tissue - the cells involved with the formation of muscle, fibrous and nerve tissue. Desmoid tumors, also called aggressive fibromatoses , are locally aggressive. This means that they can grow into and even destroy adjacent normal tissues, even bones. They do not, however, have the capacity to spread distantly throughout the body. Hence, most doctors consider desmoid tumors to be benign and not malignant. But regardless of the name, tumor-related destruction of vital structures and/or organs can be fatal.

"The band are back in the studio getting a feel for new material after the last album No Line On The Horizon," a source told the music network in May. "Will.i.am had a credit on that and they are looking to explore that direction further. They have been working with Danger Mouse and RedOne. They are excited about getting to work with Carl Falk."

Paul McCartney

Paul McCartney is worth an estimated $800 million, largely thanks to his work with The Beatles and Wings. McCartney's a prolific songwriter too — he scribed some of the most popular pop music songs ever, like "Yesterday" and "Hey Jude." He also has a stake in Apple.

He's so rich that he asked for an outlandish salary for his performance at the 2012 Olympic Opening Ceremony: One British Pound .

Elton John

McCartney's fellow Brit musician, Elton John, is worth a staggering $309 million, thanks to his nearly five-decade music and songwriting career. He and songwriting partner Bernie Taupin made millions from their work, including a $39 million, twelve-year contract signed with Warner Bros. Records in 1992.

These days? John is enjoying the fruits of his labor with husband David Furnish. The couple are parents to one son and are reportedly working with the same surrogate to have another child.

50 Years of Marilyn Monroe-inspired beauty

Some call it eternal beauty and some call it plain ol' sex appeal. Either way, there's no doubt that Marilyn Monroe has left her mark. August 5, 2012 marks 50 years since the day she mysteriously died in her Hollywood home. So, we're taking a look at the legacy she has spawned in the world of beauty and style.

The beautiful Marilyn Monroe in Seven Year Itch

The girl next door

She was one of the first girls next door, as we've come to know the term, in her role as "the girl" in The Seven Year Itch. Over the years, the term has been further defined by beauties like Jennifer Aniston and Elisha Cuthbert.

She's a girl with a little edge and a little controversy, but in the end, she just wants to love and be loved back. There's something very beautiful about that.

Christina Aguilera and Marilyn Monroe-inspired beauty

The blonde bombshell look

When Marilyn left the world, she wouldn't be the only famous female to make sexuality a part of her identity. Christina Aguilera captured the world with her sexuality and kept them watching as she broke out of her good girl persona. After all is said and done, she remains quite the bombshell and constantly rocks some of Marilyn's signature looks: pale skin, the red lip and retro curls.

She has her fashion police moments just like everyone else in the spotlight but still keeps it hot like Marilyn. Other blonde bombshells include Gwen Stefani and Madonna at her start.

Michelle Williams Marilyn-monroe inspired beauty

Forever a cover star

Michelle Williams recently brought Norma Jean back to life and even landed the cover of Vogue. Point is: Marilyn's beauty is clearly eternal because she's landing magazine covers from the grave. We were all reminded, yes, of the troubled life Marilyn led, but also of just how beautiful she was.

The Smash series celebrates Mariyln Monroe-inspired beauty

Do blondes really do it better?

In the hit series Smash, Katharine McPhee and Megan Hilty's characters battle it out for the dream role on Broadway playing Norma Jean in Marilyn. Her blonde locks and sexy shape live on in show biz.

Anne Hathaway and in Marilyn Monroe shirt

A graphic icon

Since her death, Marilyn has been with us in spirit, on graphic tees and on wall art. She continues to inspire designers with her iconic face. Here, Anne Hathaway is wearing a comfy red shirt that is significantly more chic because Marilyn's expression is printed on the front.

I guess even when you opt for comfort over style , there's always a way to remind yourself to be and feel fabulous.

Marilyn Monroe beauty

Check out her menswear

Menswear for women has become quite the "thing" over the past several years. Even with curves for days, Marilyn showed us that structured and tailored clothes could flatter a woman's body. She may have thought she was just supporting the troops here, but I consider it a vintage sighting in menswear trends for women!

We'll leave you with this famous quote by Marilyn:

Tameka Foster must battle Usher while mourning Kile

Tameka Foster is in mourning after the death of her son, Kile Glover. She must, however, continue on with the battle for custody of her two sons fathered by Usher. In a personal statement, the bereaved mother speaks.

Tameka Foster

Tameka Foster has a personal message for everyone to hear. Writing in a letter to Global Grind, the woman whose child just passed away thanks many for their support while begging all not to believe everything they hear in the press.

Tameka Foster on mourning her son, Kile Glover:

"To begin, I would like to express my sincere gratitude to the countless number of people who opened their hearts, extended their prayers, well-wishes and remained hopeful for my son Kile during the last weeks of his life.

I truly believe that he has always been an Angel from birth and the World was just too small to contain a spirit so vast. I'm thankful and blessed to merely be the vessel that carried him and humbled that God gave him to us to love."

Kile Glover is taken off life support >>

On her custody battle with Usher over their two sons:

"Sadly, I remain in the unfortunate position of having to respond to and attend court proceedings that were not initiated or begun by me. I did not file this custody case and was content with the ‘joint custody’ arrangement that we share. Most importantly, nor do I wish to appear in court while I am mourning the loss of my son. But I do not want to delay thus prolong these proceedings either; I'd rather continue this arduous process hoping it will help move me through this most difficult period in my life. "

Tameka Foster: Usher's grief over son's death 'bogus' >>

On the press vs. reality:

"This may sound really cliché but you must NOT believe everything you read or hear and never judge… especially without solid facts and always, but always consider the source. Discernment is key. My boys are my entire world and I will fight tooth and nail to keep all of my sons together as a family, I pray for a swift, peaceful resolution so that we all can move forward."

NBC loses Twitter war, but they're OK with that

NBC has taken some bashing over social media and their decision to delay Olympic broadcasts until primetime. But the ratings have shown that there are very few people who actually care.

Olympics

The backlash over the tape-delayed Olympics is ongoing. NBC made the decision and has stuck with it, no matter what their critics say. With the introduction of Twitter in the mix with these Olympics, those not wanting spoilers before watching the event have had to stay away from all social media.

“The hashtag #NBCFail has been connected to thousands, perhaps millions, of tweets such as this one: ‘BREAKING: USA wins gold medal in synchronized NBC bashing,’” said the Washington Post. “’Tune in to NBC tomorrow for coverage of the event.’”

But no matter how much NBC-bashing anyone has done, it doesn’t seem to have affected their viewing of the Summer Games.

“NBC’s ratings tell a different story. The numbers are higher than expected, both in viewership and ad dollars, and the network’s executives are happy,” said the Washington Post. “’The silent majority’ of viewers, one top executive told reporters, is content.”

Twitter just recently passed 500 million members, but according to the Washington Post, only eight percent of Americans are on the site on a normal day.

With the boosted ratings of the Olympics, some sports have gained a surprising amount of popularity this year.

One sport that has gained a large following out of the 2012 London Games is archery.

“NBC said Thursday that during the first few days of its Olympics coverage, archery was the most popular sport of any that it aired on its cable networks -- bigger even than basketball,” said The Associated Press. “Archery averaged 1.5 million viewers when it came on TV.”

NBC even went so far as to say that they believe part of the ratings jump for the sport has to do with the popularity of the Hunger Games.

“It is reminiscent of when recent Winter Olympics telecasts fueled an interest in curling,” said the AP.

Janet talks family drama, La Toya gets reality show

Just as the drama surrounding the Jackson family hits big in the media, La Toya announces a new show about her own life.

La Toya Jackson

The Jacksons have had quite the dramatic few weeks. First, the matriarch of the family, Katherine Jackson, was reported missing. She showed up a few days later saying she had been at a spa. But by then, another member of the family, TJ Jackson, had been given custody of Michael Jackson’s children.

The family has been given a piece of good news though. La Toya Jackson, one of Michael’s sisters, has been given her own reality show. But not just any show; this one will air on OWN, Oprah Winfrey’s TV network.

Life with La Toya is described as a ‘candid look’ inside Jackson's life as she juggles family, friends and business,” said The Associated Press.

The Jacksons have dabbled in reality television before. According to the AP, The Jacksons: A Family Dynasty followed Jermaine, Jackie, Marlon and Tito Jackson and aired six episodes on A&E.

La Toya was also a competitor on the Celebrity Apprentice last year.

Meanwhile, another Jackson child is not very happy with the publicity the family received in the last few weeks’ events.

Friday, Janet Jackson, along with her brother Randy and sister Rebbie, issued a statement on Friday. The siblings claim that the executors of Michael Jackson’s will are trying to divide the family.

“The negative media campaign generated by the executors and their agents has been relentless,” wrote Blair G. Brown, a Washington attorney for Janet Jackson, said the Los Angeles Times.

The statement claimed that the executors are simply attempting to distract from the argument that Michael’s will may be invalid.

“They stand to gain nothing financially by a finding that the will is invalid,” said Brown, according to the Los Angeles Times. “What will be gained ... is that the executors will be replaced and the estate and the guardianship will be managed in a manner that is in the best interest of the children, which is what Michael wanted.”

On Wednesday, Jermaine issued his own statement about the recent family drama.

“Michael Jackson's brother Jermaine Jackson called for a truce among the siblings Wednesday,” said Linda Deutsch with The Associated Press. “He expressed regret for the public turmoil and urged peace, love and healing.”

Many women want to learn to box, but feel intimidated and don’t know where to start. But Boxing Boot Camp, a new fitness video by Empower Fitness, will have us throwing left jabs and right hooks in no time.

Striking beauties

Created in collaboration with Striking Beauties, the nation’s first 24-hour boxing gym designed exclusively for women, Boxing Boot Camp  is a maximized interval training workout that includes a cardio-revving jump-rope warmup and 12 rounds of boxing.

Jaime from Boxing Beauties
Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt

Boxing Boot Camp comes with a 6-pound medicine ball, speed rope, two weighted gloves ergonomically designed for women, a DVD with a 28-minute workout , a bonus abs workout and a complete instructional section that teaches you how to harness the power of your own body through punches and combinations.

SheKnows got a personal preview of the intense workout with USA boxing coach Jaime “The Hurricane” Clampitt, a four-time world champion boxer who co-created and appears in the Boxing Boot Camp video. In 2009, Clampitt met Striking Beauties owner Dena Paolino, and the women partnered to create an authentic boxing program for women at all fitness levels. Clampitt also created an amateur boxing program at Striking Beauties, located outside of Boston, that has already produced several national champions. We asked Clampitt, who's so fit she performed the boxing demo while pregnant with her second child, for a few boxing tips for beginners.

SheKnows: How can women get over feeling intimidated, and what's the best way for a woman who has never boxed before to get started?

Jaime Clampitt: I feel this [Boxing Boot Camp] video will provide women with a great way to get started in the sport of boxing. The video is not only an amazing workout, but it also focuses on proper technique. Having the technique and the conditioning from the video will give women the confidence to go to a boxing gym if that’s something they would like to try.

SheKnows: How often should you use the Empower Boxing Boot Camp video or take a boxing class in order to see toning and weight loss results?

Jaime Clampitt: For most women, I would have them start with two to three times a week. I think that this is a great way to begin your training regimen so you allow your body to rest between sessions, but it will still give you weight loss and toning results. As they get stronger I would have them increase their workouts up to six days a week. The great thing about boxing is that the same workout can always get harder. As your technique gets better and your stamina builds, you can move faster, punch faster and punch harder. In the video we box two-minute rounds with 30-second and one-minute intervals so you can increase your punch output as you build your stamina.

SheKnows: What is the biggest benefit of boxing as a form of exercise for women?

Jaime Clampitt: Boxing is one of the best all-around workouts. This is a huge benefit because you work every muscle in your body, and boxing also provides an aerobic and anaerobic workout. I think it’s a great way for busy women to condition their whole body in one workout.

SheKnows: What is the most common feedback you hear from women who come to Striking Beauties?

Jaime Clampitt: The most common feedback is that they really feel empowered. Our members leave the gym with a sense of accomplishment after each challenging class. It’s amazing as a trainer to not only see their bodies change, but to see their confidence build.

How to fall in love with healthy, delicious foods

$
0
0
A lot has changed for 21st-century women, but one thing hasn’t: Moms still juggle insanely busy lives and their needs usually fall last on their own list, says Columbia University-certified health coach Beth Aldrich. That includes eating — as in, really loving what you eat. Because that bag of chips you downed watching the final episode of Lost for a third time actually didn't really make you feel that good. Here's how to fall in love with delicious — and healthy — food.

happy woman eating

Busy schedules have a way of turning us to convenient processed foods or sending us to the drive-through window. But food can, and should, be about savoring every bite.

There's no place in a good relationship for mindless, empty noshing.

"It’s wonderful to take pleasure in food," says Beth Aldrich, author of the award-winning new book, Real Moms Love to Eat: How to Conduct a Love Affair with Food, Lose Weight and Feel Fabulous. Eating shouldn't be about depriving ourselves of treats -- just not eating those treats every day, she says, and when we do eat them, really enjoying them. There's no place in a good relationship for mindless, empty noshing.

"Eating in front of the TV is not savoring," she says. How much buttery salted popcorn do you really need to get a fix?

Turn comfort food into healthy favorites

"There are also plenty of great healthy ingredients that you can turn into new foods to love, and even healthier versions of those favorite comfort foods from childhood," Aldrich says. "You’ll finish meals feeling energized, emotionally satisfied and best of all, not guilty." Meals shouldn't weigh us down and make us feel like hitting the couch.

Aldrich has these top tips to start a love affair with what you eat

Make it all about you: Get back to the basics, remembering the pleasure inherent in the food experiences of your childhood. Think of the simple joy you had crunching into a sweet apple. How does that compare with the high-fructose corn syrup-drenched, refined wheat-flour products that leave you bloated and craving more? Whole foods – those eaten in their natural, unprocessed state, such as a baked potato versus French fries — give you a fuller eating experience and increase energy.

berriesTry whole foods for energy

Get naked with raw foods: Our earliest ancestors were hunter-gatherers who foraged for and consumed a wide variety of food, mostly consisting of raw veggies. Your body will thank you not long after you include more raw food into your diet, but you don’t have to go the full Monty right away. Add fresh berries to your breakfast yogurt, include fresh nuts with your lunch or replace cole slaw from the supermarket deli with a fresh recipe made from scratch.

Tame your cravings dragon: One of the swiftest paths to an unhealthy snacking binge is ready-made, highly processed sweets and baked goods. The craving attack occurs when moms are busy and haven’t planned their meals for the day, and it leads to a spike in blood sugar, a crash and then another monster-size craving. Have healthy options ready to go, including whole-grain toast with sesame butter or a simple yogurt and berry smoothie.

Yes, love that chocolate

Indulge your inner chocoholic : Eating an ounce of dark chocolate every day — high-quality dark chocolate without all the fillers – is good for you. Dark chocolate contains natural chemicals that serve as mood boosters and elevate serotonin levels, which enhance our sense of well-being. Health benefits range from keeping blood vessels elastic to increasing antioxidant levels.

"The wrong way to look at the whole-food diet is as an obligation," Aldrich says. "You are doing your body and your taste buds a favor by excluding unnecessary sugar, salt and processed fats from your diet in favor of a variety of spices, fuller textures and a sexier figure."

William and Harry are enjoying London games, family bonding

The princes talk about how proud they are of their country and their family. And how none of them knew Queen Elizabeth II was involved with the opening ceremony until it happened.

Princes William and Harry

The glamour of the British royal family has been evident throughout the last week of the Olympic Games. But so has their down-to-earth nature.

"Both of us were slightly surprised with our grandmother's secret hobby of parachuting," Prince Harry told the BBC, speaking of the scene where the queen looks like she is parachuting with James Bond.

"We were kept completely in the dark about it, that's how big the secret was,” Prince William added. "Harry got a sniff of a rumour on the night and the rumour mill was going into overdrive but in fact she did such a good performance that she's been asked to star in the next Bond film. I'm thrilled for her."

The family have been the ambassadors of these games because they royal family represents the United Kingdom in a lot of ways.

"The support of the British public is something else," Harry told the BBC. "The buzz ... is astonishing."

Prince William also spoke about the other British citizens participating in the Olympics Games.

"It's been fantastic to see the volunteers going around with a smile on their face, greeting people and doing such a good job,” said William.

The elder prince, who is a flight lieutenant in the Royal Air Force, also mentioned the military’s help with the Summer Games.

"I think they've been fantastic and everywhere we've gone they've looked extremely smart and like they've enjoyed themselves,” William told the BBC. "They've obviously been doing their job extremely well."

The family has a personal connection with the games too. Zara Phillips, the cousin of William and Harry, won the first Olympic medal by any British royal in this year’s games. She was a member of the British equestrian team and won silver.

"We as cousins are very, very proud, it now explains why we never get to see her because she is always riding," Prince Harry told the BBC.

The cousins showed that no matter how important their country is to them, their family is the most impotant thing.

“Asked what their favourite moments were, William said Phillips' medal was the most emotional and most involved for him because of the personal connection,” said the BBC.

Despite heartbreak, the Twilight show must go on

Even though Robert Pattinson has reportedly moved out of the home they shared, he and Kristen Stewart will need to move on and publicize the next Twilight film.

Pattinson StewartIt’s been only a few weeks since Kristen Stewart admitted to cheating on her boyfriend, and Twilight co-star, Robert Pattinson.

It is now less than four months until the release of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn , so the inevitable is happening soon.

That inevitability is the promotion for the film, which will put the two exes next to each other. But the studio said that the slated promotion will be moving forward, no matter how awkward it may end up being.

"While it is studio policy not to comment of the personal lives of actors, Summit is moving full steam ahead and looking forward to this November's opening of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn - Part 2,” president of worldwide marketing for Summit Entertainment, Nancy Kirkpartrick, told Entertainment Weekly. “We are confident that the film delivers amazing entertainment for our passionate fans and general audience alike."

Pattinson is said to be heartbroken over news that Kristen Stewart was cheating on him with her Snow White and the Huntsman director Rupert Sanders.

Moving “full steam ahead” will include the promotion for the film, something both actors will probably have to do together. This might be okay with Stewart, since Pattinson is reportedly not taking her phone calls.

"Rob is not taking Kristen’s calls and he isn’t much of a texter as they don’t text each other. Not only has he left the house they share but he is leaving the situation all together cold turkey to have time to himself and deal with it on his own terms," a source told HollywoodLife.com. "He currently wants to be as far from Kristen symbolically and physically right now while he deals with what has happened."

If Stewart is looking to get Pattinson back, the film could offer her the last chance to be in the same room as him.

The film is set to be released Nov. 16, so promotion for the film could start anytime in the next few months.
