Judd Apatow's Daughters Are Brutal Teenagers

It seems like a less-than-happy Father's Day is in store for Judd Apatow because his kids are kind of jerks, but hey, what teenage girls aren't, amirite?

More: 6 Things Judd Apatow Might Change About Pee-wee Herman

In their defense, Iris and Maude are at that really special teenage age where they know everything and their parents suck (I remember those days). But 14-year-old Iris and 19-year-old Maude, whom Judd shares with his wife, Leslie Mann, sound especially brutal.

During an appearance on Conan, Apatow shared what his daughters really think of his jokes. He's the writer behind comedies like Knocked Up, Trainwreck, Bridesmaids, Superbad, The 40-Year-Old Virgin and Pineapple Express. By pretty much all accounts, he's a funny dude. But not as far as his daughters are concerned — especially Iris.

"She doesn't think I'm funny, but, like, to such an extent that it's deeply hurtful," Apatow said, adding that she recently told him, "Dad, I hate your jokes so much that sometimes my friends make jokes which are funny, but I don’t laugh, because you make jokes."

O'Brien summed it up by asking, "She's saying your comedy is so horrible to her, it has ruined all comedy?"

More: Are Judd Apatow Movies to Blame for the UCSB shooting?

It doesn't even end there. Apatow said his daughter's hate for his comedy extends automatically to people who like his comedy, even complete strangers.

"If anyone likes me, that bugs her too," he told Conan. "So, on the rare moment that someone walks up to me and is like, 'Hey, I liked Knocked Up, it made me happy,' the second they walk away, she mocks them."

Teenagers are generally terrible, but these two sound like real pieces of work. The kicker? They regularly call Apatow a "Hollywood dick."

How we imagine a conversation might go between Apatow and his girls:

Apatow: "Hey, that family selfie is totally lit, fam!"
Iris and Maude: *aggressive eye roll*
Iris: "That's not even how you use 'fam,' fam."
Maude: "I can't even."
Iris: "We're going to [friend's] house."
Apatow: "Hey, she said she loved Knocked Up!"
Maude: "Dad! We told you not to talk to our friends!"
Iris: "Unfollowing her on Instagram rn."

More: No, Judd Apatow, Theft and Sex Crimes Aren't the Same

Hang in there, Judd. Almost all teenagers suck. They'll probably grow out of it. We hope.

Phubbing Is a Relationship Trend That May Make You Want to Die Alone

What's the only thing more annoying than having a partner who constantly checks their phone instead of paying attention to your conversation? The term for this particular situation, which is phubbing.

Get it? It's a portmanteau of phone and snubbing, which I guess makes sense, but honestly I'd probs break up with someone faster for using the word phubbing than for checking their Facebook while listening to me tell a long-winded story about something probably food-related.

More: 5 Ways to Have Sex While on Your Period

Verbiage aside, it looks like phubbing is actually taking a big toll on some relationships. Apparently, 46 percent of people in a study by researchers Baylor University reported that they experienced phubbing (though I'm honestly surprised that number wasn't higher), and 22 percent reported that they fought with their partners as a result of phubbing.

Considering the fact that the average American looks at their phone 150 times a day (about once every four to six minutes), it's no surprise that checking out our digital lives can result in ignoring a person who's in front of us IRL.

More: 6 Reasons to Unplug Your Phone This Summer

So, what's the solution? The study authors recommend that couples take one phone-free hour a day to really connect. Sounds simple enough! The key is putting the phone in another room or on silent so you aren't tempted.

And one other trick: When you bring up the phone-free hour to your partner, whatever you do, don't use the word phubbing or you might find yourself in an even worse spot than before.

Can Fleas Really Be Treated or Prevented Naturally?

$

0

Many people swear by natural remedies for keeping their pets flea-free. But do they really work? And even more important, are they safe? Both dogs and cats can experience serious diseases secondary to fleabites. I've rounded up all the info you need to know about some of the most common natural flea treatments so you can keep your beloved pets free of those nasty varmints in the safest way possible.

Diatomaceous earth

Diatomaceous earth is a product that is mined from the earth. It’s actually the microscopic, fossilized remains of very tiny sea organisms known as diatoms. Most commonly, diatomaceous earth is a component of many “natural” pesticides. Because a form of silica is a component of diatomaceous earth and because silica has sharp edges, diatomaceous earth can help to dry out or “desiccate” the external skeleton (exoskeleton) of insects, thus causing them to die and hopefully stop bothering your beloved pet.

Because of the way it works, diatomaceous earth has to be applied topically to kill fleas on pets. Because it’s a silica-containing powder, it can be quite irritating to the respiratory tract if inhaled, especially to cats. And because it has to be in contact with the fleas themselves to work, you kind of have to put it all over your pet, which increases the risk of respiratory interference (and also the chance that your pet will look like that Pigpen kid in the Charlie Brown cartoons). So it’s likely this isn’t a very practical or efficacious treatment for fleas.

Garlic

Some people swear by garlic for its insect-killing properties, but not only have I not seen proof that it actually works, I’d be extremely cautious when feeding it to my pets. Garlic, if eaten in sufficient quantities, can cause anemia (low red blood cell numbers), and cats are the most sensitive to this reaction.

The estimated toxic dose of garlic for cats is 1 gram per kilogram of body weight and for dogs it’s 3 to 6 grams per kilo. If an average head of garlic weighs about 28 grams (thank you, Google), then even a couple of cloves can cause consequences, especially in cats. The bottom line is that garlic just doesn’t have enough efficacy as a flea-fighter to warrant taking the risk of making your pet seriously ill by using it for that purpose.

Environmental treatment

If you’re sure your pet doesn’t have fleas and you just want to treat the environment to keep the fleas at bay, there are some commercial products that are extremely safe and actually effective for this purpose. Fleabusters has safe products for your yard and your home that will drive down the flea population. This may be an excellent strategy for keeping your pet flea-free, especially if used in conjunction with a good-quality monthly pharmaceutical flea preventive.

Essential oils

Neem oil is a component of many natural flea products, and alternative vets say that it may actually have some efficacy. It’s a vegetable oil pressed from the fruits and seeds of a type of evergreen that’s native to the Indian subcontinent. Although it has some efficacy against fleas, be aware that it’s fairly short-lived, and most veterinarians who recommend this product to pet parents in search of a natural flea product suggest using it every 2 to 3 days.

It’s important to remember that cats and dogs can have severe reactions to certain essential oils, either focused at the site of administration or more systemic. It’s best to avoid the use of them on your pets, especially if the skin is already irritated or infected.

Good old-fashioned flea-combing

Here’s a natural flea-fighting remedy that actually works. Flea combs are designed to have very little space in between the teeth, so when you comb through your pet’s fur, you’ll be able to pull out the fleas and send them to a watery death (actually, rubbing alcohol works best). But flea-combing needs to be done frequently — like daily — and while your 4-pound Chihuahua might not mind the additional attention, it hardly seems like a practical approach for those of us with jobs and other responsibilities, especially if we have pets of a larger size.

Here’s Why Your Breasts Can Feel Lumpy One Week & Sensitive the Next

$

0

The swelling, tenderness, aches and soreness: It’s all completely natural. The main cause of these changes can be attributed to the variance of the flow of hormones during a woman’s menstrual cycle. Here are the five main phases of breast inflation that your breasts go through over the course of a month.

More: How to perform a breast self-exam

Phase 1: Breasts feel lumpy

During the first few days of your menstrual cycle or the premenstrual phase, the texture of your boobs may suddenly become rough and uneven. This lumpy texture is likely caused by the higher levels of the hormones progesterone and prolactin, which leads to the enlargement of milk glands as the breasts prepare for a possible pregnancy. Once the body determines a lack of pregnancy, the texture of the breasts will smooth out again.

Phase 2: Breasts are smaller and softer

As you near the end of menstruation, your boobs will seemingly shrink as the swelling in breast tissue goes down. According to Sara Gottfried, a gynecologist in Berkeley, California, “Breasts are at their lowest volume at this time because estrogen and progesterone are at their lowest.” During this phase, the breasts are not being altered by lots of hormones, so they also soften up.

More: The breast cancer symptom that's easy to miss (and looks harmless)

Phase 3: Breasts are super-perky

During the follicular phase, estrogen levels begin to rise, causing your breasts to look extra perky. Increased estrogen improves skin elasticity, leading to flattering results in the breast region.

Phase 4: Breasts are full and firm

Expect your breasts to be at their largest cup size during the luteal phase. They may even appear to be a bit more veiny or swollen than usual. In an interview with Health, Rebecca Booth, a gynecologist and hormonal expert, said, “Progesterone is really peaking, so this is a time associated with the largest breast size and density.”

Phase 5: Breasts are lopsided

According to a study in the journal Ethology and Sociobiology, when estrogen levels are low during Week 4 or the premenstrual week, breasts appear less symmetrical. But as soon as your period arrives, the sizes of your breasts should even out normally.

More: Your bra can't give you breast cancer and other boob myths you can forget

How to curb breast changes

Avoid salt, caffeine and high-fat foods in the weeks leading up to your period. Be sure to wear a bra that fits you properly and doesn’t dig into your skin or irritate your breasts in any way. Try to fit in a daily cardio workout to keep you feeling happy and healthy.

4 Reasons Why Pink Is Our Mom Crush

Sure, a lot of celebrity moms try to keep it real, but come on: Not all of us have Prada diaper bags and two nannies and a timeshare in the Maldives and perfectly curated social media accounts. (Hey, we're not hating, we're just saying.)

More: Pink gives the mommy-shamers exactly what they deserve

One of our all-time favorite celebrity moms is Pink, whose candid, super cool approach to motherhood makes us want to raise a glass (or three) with her after getting all the kids to bed. Here are a few reasons why she's our #MomCrush, Monday through Friday, and weekends too.

1. She's honest about the hard stuff

Pink's second child, son Jameson Moon Hart, is a cutie. But his older sister, Willow, has had a very hard time adjusting to his arrival on the scene. Pink's been incredibly candid about the struggle to help her daughter adjust — and we're grateful for it. Insta-bliss is the exception to the rule when a new baby comes home to roost, and Pink's not afraid to admit it.

More: Pink's daughter is hating being a big sis

"I do all kinds of stuff," she told Ellen DeGeneres, "I literally put Jameson down when she walks into the room...She's a little weepy these days, so we're working it out."

2. She's all about being strong — not skinny

Don't you dare tell Pink to lose the baby weight. She's had it with the unrealistic expectations put on new moms. When she headed back to the gym after Jameson's birth, she posted an awesomely inspiration — and totally relatable — selfie, captioned "Day 1!!!!!!!! Let's do this...Week 6 post baby and I haven't lost ANY WEIGHT YET!!!!...yay me!!!! I'm normal!"
pink scale

Two months after that we swooned even harder when she posted again on Instagram: "Would you believe I'm 160 pounds and 5'3"? By 'regular standards' that makes me obese. I know I'm not at my goal or anywhere near it after Baby 2 but dammit I don't feel obese. The only thing I'm feeling is myself. Stay off that scale ladies! #feelingmyself #strongismygoal #bodygoals"

3. She's all for normalizing breastfeeding

Recently, on a hike with Jameson, Pink stopped to nurse him — and took a selfie that she shared online. The excellent caption? "Hiking makes us thirsty! #happybaby #hotpocket #normalizebreastfeedingyo #arewethereyet." Her no-big-deal approach is a big deal to a lot of nursing mothers, and we love her for it.

4. She and longtime husband Carey Hart don't have a "perfect" marriage — and that's OK

Pink and her husband, motocross racer Carey Hart, have never hidden the fact that love takes work (the couple even separated during a few times during rocky patches, then reunited). But Pink and Hart clearly love being a family, regularly posting pics of themselves sharing parenting duties. And in January they took a family trip to the national Women's March. How fantastic is that? Hart posted, "Very proud of my wife, and it was really special to march in the streets with my family today...."

And Pink recently returned the Instagram love after the two did a charity ride together to raise money to end child hunger. We loved her caption: "Have to say a huge THANKYOU to my partner in crime and all things @hartluck for pushing me and for literally pushing me up a couple hills while you rode one handed. I could not have done yesterday without your support...you are the sweetest, most supportive, strong, open hearted man and I love you. Okay enough of that."

5. Her sense of humor is tops

No matter what's going down, Pink keeps her sense of humor about motherhood. She generously shares pics of her life as a mom with her fans, and the captions are consistently hilarious. A recent shot of Jameson grinning was accompanied by, "He thinks what I have to say is really interesting and groundbreaking."

Pregnancy Diaries: The First-Time Mom-to-Be Who’s Always Exhausted

In our new series Pregnancy Diaries, we ask expecting women to jot down every pregnancy-related detail of their lives for a week. (Special thanks to New York mag and Refinery29 for the inspo.) Work-related conundrums, struggles with IVF and a whole lot of nausea ahead. This week, we have a 35-year-old New Yorker who’s 33 weeks pregnant with her first child. She was on birth control for about five years, and it took her and her husband about a year to conceive.

Day 1

6 a.m. — Wide awake! I haven’t had a doctor’s appointment in four weeks and today is the next one. I have strong fetal movement, but still continue to be in total panic right before a doctor's appointment in case there’s anything but good news.

9 a.m. — At work dealing with calls, but focused on the doctor’s appointment. I had a diabetes scare when an initial glucose test came back with sketchy results (too close of a number to the threshold for diabetes). I had to take a four-hour glucose test, which was difficult because I had to fast all night and during the test, and then there’s the anxiety of results. But it came back completely perfect and now I’m just keeping an eye on sugar intake and exercise (walking, mostly) even more than before.

12 p.m. — At the doctor’s and everything is progressing well. He let us hear the heartbeat, which helped to settle some fears, although I remain on high alert for any problems. He came back out to the waiting room after the appointment to let me know I am anemic and have to add iron and vitamin C supplements in addition to daily multivitamin, and from here forward the appointments will be more frequent. The next one is in three weeks, then two weeks then every week. The doctor is very competent and scientific, but doesn’t offer much in the compassion department. Often, I’m the one driving the conversation with my list of questions. It’s almost as if I don’t come prepared, he won’t offer any info on his own other than to share the heartbeat rate and that nothing seems out of place.

3 p.m. — I’m back at work. There’s very little acknowledgement from most co-workers (especially my team) on third trimester symptoms like fatigue. They don’t ask how I’m doing or offer any support on my workload.

6 p.m. — I’m home and celebrating a good appointment. My husband is so attentive and takes care of everything. Had a fun meal including a small bowl of ice cream, and now the baby’s kicking like crazy. I think he likes ice cream too!

10 p.m. – Getting comfortable in bed is getting much more difficult. I wake up on my back and panic, and still need to train myself to sleep on one side. Falling asleep isn’t as easy as it was in the first trimester — that’s when I was dead asleep for 10 hours every night.

Day 2

9 a.m. — I woke up completely exhausted and after reviewing my work schedule, I decide to work from home. I sent a message to team and my boss never acknowledged it, but one team member (who has two small kids) wrote back asking if I needed any help with work tasks and that she would add dial-in numbers so that I can join meetings.

12 p.m. — I ordered lunch from a nearby diner. I’m focused on getting fruits in since I’m at home today; a smoothie should cover it. I inhale it and the baby kicks. I notice I have less swelling in my hands and feet today, probably because I’m not running around Manhattan.

3 p.m. — Got harsh message from boss about not being on a call — never mind that I didn’t know about the call — but instead of giving me the benefit of the doubt, she assumed the worst and was further frustrated because I was at home and not in the office. I explained the situation and she was forced to admit I had done nothing wrong, but didn’t acknowledge much and just moved on.

6 p.m. — My husband is home and being wonderful as usual. He talks to my belly when he comes home — and Baby responds with fetal movement most of the time. Super-cute!

9:30 p.m. — Going to bed early because I have an all-day strategy meeting tomorrow. I’m not looking forward to a nine-hour meeting. I hope they have lots of snacks and bathroom breaks! Feeling guilty about taking care of yourself when pregnant is a waste of time, but it’s the reality of working full time. I was upset that making the call to work from home was not fully appreciated by my boss and team, but I actually did to ensure productivity this week and knew the commute and running around would actually make me very low-energy for our team strategy meeting on Friday. I was trying to take care to allow for a more productive workday on both days. Ugh.

More: The Easiest (and Safest!) Way to Get Rid of Pregnancy Acne

Day 3

7 a.m. — Working from home helped. I woke up fresh — well, you always wake up tired, but I was less tired than previous days this week — and put on a maternity suit for work. Yes, they make those!

12 p.m. — Long morning of work but feeling myself and have high energy to contribute. As a note, I get out of breath when I speak too long, and I needed to sit down several times during “standing” parts of the workshop. I’m grateful for my lunch break, but it’s a working lunch, so not much of a break. Maternity suit is feeling a little snug.

6 p.m. — That was way too long of a day for a mom-to-be; I’m really exhausted. And my friends from work are going for drinks across the street and are giving me shit that I always bail. I end up going for 30 minutes just to have a little social time to myself (it has been a while) and order a Shirley Temple. It’s actually delicious! Now I’m ready for the weekend.

"Even though I didn’t leave the apartment and my husband did most of the cooking, I’m super-exhausted and not able to move from couch."

Day 4

7 a.m. — I didn’t sleep much at all. I woke up several times during the night and then finally just got up.

9 a.m. — I’m super-tired, but my husband made healthy breakfast. Now I’m getting sleepy.

3 p.m. — Slept for three and a half hours! I was exhausted from the week and can’t leave the apartment today or do any of my to-do list. Ugh

6 p.m. — Measured the nursery for curtains! My husband is going to put them up, but I wanted to make sure it’s the right color and matching all the other stuff in the nursery. I could see him getting slightly bugged by details like shades of blue, but he’s being very patient.

8 p.m. — I made burgers with a side of veggies for dinner at home, then watched a movie and kept lounging.

10 p.m. — My in-laws are coming tomorrow. I’ll need to clean the apartment since I did nothing today! I’m also taking new supplements: So far, I’m not feeling any side effects, and considering I now need to take three pills everyday instead of one, it’s a little annoying.

Day 5

9 a.m. — I’m up early to clean and prepare for my in-laws coming. They want to see the new nursery, which is almost set up. It looks clean, but that’s probably because it’s still mostly empty. My shower is in a month, so that’ll fill the room up, and some gifts have already started to arrive.

3 p.m. — Had a nice time with the family, but I’m very tired. Even though I didn’t leave the apartment and my husband did most of the cooking, I’m super-exhausted and not able to move from couch. A little overwhelming to talk about all the planning — we talked about getting a new car and although that sounds fun to me, it requires planning and has financial implications that we could do without given all the other costs that are piling up. I have an “everything is worth it for my baby” attitude, but the wallet has a limit. Now I’m in Sunday night depression mode because work has been so intense and tomorrow’s Monday.

Day 6

7 a.m. — I have to sit through a three-hour train to D.C. today, so I’m headed to Penn Station in a car. I’m usually excited about day trips so I can be home at night, but I’m worried that this might be too long of a day for me.

12 p.m. — I head straight to a café to get lunch and snacks for later. I have to moderate a 10-person meeting with senior people.

6 p.m. — Meetings went well and back on the train to New York — with a co-worker who has two small children. I’m grateful to talk about something other than work and hear her experience on babies! She summarized her various tips: “The first week is the most crazy, and your own mother is really the only person you want there. In-laws, siblings and friends should really visit later on and leave you to adjust and get things under control — or at least move on from sheer panic and a hard first week.”

"Nobody ever gets up to offer seats on the subway — it’s really alarming."

Day 7

8 a.m. — Took all three supplements with a light breakfast and definitely regretted it as soon as I got on the subway. I was super-dizzy and about to fall, but nobody ever gets up to offer seats on the subway — it’s really alarming, actually. Finally I ask someone if they would mind that I take their seat, and they get up.

12 p.m. — Crazy-busy workday already and I’m tired and swollen. No rest at work at all.

6 p.m. — Stopped for a chai latte, which has less caffeine than all the other choices, and it tastes great.

8 p.m. — I had work calls from home through 8:30 p.m., and I’m finally sitting down for dinner with my husband.

10 p.m. — I’m super-tired, but so grateful to lie down and just have a chance to unwind and talk to the baby — he’s kicking like crazy — which I’m excited about. I’m also slightly nervous that he’s much more active at night. I wonder if that will be the same when he finally arrives! I finally stop and think: If you let it, work and other life demands can suck up all of your energy. And if you can’t do it for yourself, be mindful for your unborn child that you need to slow down, stand up for yourself, and rest as much as possible. Yes, you can do everything, but it’s so important to do everything for your baby too.

Multiple sources are confirming Beyoncé has given birth to her twins, which — rumor has it — are a boy and a girl after a blue and pink balloon bouquet were spotted with a card reading, "B & J." Of course, in this gender neutral world of ours, who knows what the colors actually signify.

Though the couple has yet to officially announce the birth of their babies, a source spoke with People and said, "Bey and Jay are thrilled and have started sharing the news with their family and closest friends."

The two may be notoriously private, but that hasn't stopped Beyoncé from flaunting her baby bump since the couple announced they were expecting twins back in February.

Why We Shouldn’t Be Dismissing the Missionary Position

Praising the missionary position may seem contradictory for me, a writer who focuses on BDSM, kinks and savoring taboos. Someone like me doesn’t partake in the monotonous, highly mocked and vanilla-esque position like missionary. It’s too sweet, too intimate. I’m into whips, chains and handcuffs. Right? Er, right.

But it would be ludicrous to claim that the missionary position doesn’t exist in my vocabulary, and more important, beneath my sheets. Of course it does. I may be speaking for a large number of people here, but I don’t think it’s too out of the park to say that, yes, we all do incorporate and possibly even enjoy the missionary position.

More: 5 Summer sex positions

When the topic of what I do for a living arises in a conversation (i.e., sex journalist), I usually know what to expect if it’s a cis-gender male. “So, what’s your favorite position?” they ask as their lips curl and turn up into a crescent shape. “Ah, here we go again,” I think to myself as an eye roll or two transpires. Recently, I began to reply to their questions with, “You know what, missionary. I love missionary.”

1) Because I just crushed their heteronormative fantasy of doggy-style; 2) I actually am interested in opening up the conversation as to why the other positions benefit either party involved; and 3) Because I do enjoy a little vanilla every now and then.

“Vanilla missionary does not equal spicy,” says Dr. Megan Stubbs, a sexologist. She continues, “It’s as if people are going to be watching us in the bedroom (which is totally fine if you’re into that) and we don’t want to disappoint. We want to try the newest, hottest thing to market, and that often extends to sexual endeavors.”

However, missionary is ubiquitous in our sex lives. Maybe more for some than others. For me, it all boils down to the question of why missionary, more than other position, is ostracized from "enjoyable sex." It’s the castaway of sexual positions. Why do we associate this position with a heteronormative, flavorless, anticlimactic partnership?

For Dana B. Myers, founder of Booty Parlor and author of The Mojo Makeover: 4 Weeks to a Sexier You, the position is dismissed because, in fact, it is pretty vanilla. She explains, “With the man more in charge of the rhythm and depth of his thrusting, missionary represents a more traditional male-female dynamic. This in itself can be perceived as a more vanilla approach to sex in today’s more open-minded, Fifty Shades-inspired, 'try anything' cultural attitude towards sex.”

More: 6 first-time anal sex positions that make back door way less scary

Popular culture has placed a contemptuous umbrella over the praxis of the missionary position. Even the name, synonymous with Christian missionaries, leaves a souring taste in our mouth. It’s been known as the matrimonial position, the mama-papa position and the English-American position. While the origin of the term is up for debate, it was probably coined by Alfred Kinsey after his sexual studies in the 1950s. But why? Why do we feel as if the missionary position is a dupe — a plebeian arrangement that amounts to a loss of satisfaction? It’s categorized as love-making instead of fucking. It’s memed on the internet and referenced in comedies. We all laugh, we all agree, and then we all go home and have intercourse in the missionary position.

This isn’t in defense of the vanilla, but it is in defense of missionary.

Myers goes on to explain, “Just because missionary is more vanilla doesn’t mean it shouldn’t play a powerful part in your sex life.”

Leaving the bottom partner quite bored and unimpressed, missionary has been maligned as a rudimentary position for fornication. When positions like the butter-churner, snow angel and the standing wheelbarrow are encouraged for those looking for an adventure, my ode to missionary may leave you feeling a bit dry (quite literally). As appetizing as the linguini sounds, a lot of these positions can be exhaustive and strenuous. Somewhere in my 15- to 20-minute romp, I’m bound to find myself in a tangle of limbs, one including the missionary position. And, I like it.

The technique is sensual. It involves eye contact, skin-to-skin interaction, kissing, closeness and intimacy. It can also include variations, such as legs on shoulders or legs overhead. It doesn’t have to be a mechanical experience for either partner. It creates easy access for reaching around and fondling other parts. Choking in doggy, especially if there are height differences, can be difficult. In missionary I can be choked or I can choke. Since the majority of women don’t have an orgasm through penetration alone, my clitoris is accessible by both me and my partner in missionary. Biting, slapping, clawing and spitting are up front and personal. All of my little added desires can be fleshed out when lying together in this position. It’s important for me to get one good spit in, OK?

Of course, good sex means variety and attention to detail. Either we start in missionary, sprinkle it throughout the middle or finish in this holy flow.

Stubbs agrees, “No matter how wild and experimental you may prefer your sex to be, missionary allows you to experience full-body, skin-to-skin contact and a provides an opportunity for deep eye connection and intimate verbal communication. Plus, if you use a pillow to prop up your hips in missionary, you can angle yourself to receive pleasurable G-spot stimulation.”

Shagging shouldn’t be a performance with a round of applause at the end. It’s a conversation between you and your partner(s) that’s delicate, experimental and above all, satisfactory. If doggy gives you the orgasm of a lifetime, then by all means, get on all fours.

But my ode to missionary is simply a way to debunk the holier-than-thou attitude we have about this position. Of course, you won’t find me or anyone else triumphantly cheering about their 15 minutes in the missionary position. Like every conquest, change is necessary and all positions are beautiful positions. Nevertheless, my predilection for missionary rings strong and true. We can’t deny the fact that this way to fornicate is a staple in all sexual partnerships, queer or cis. Moreover, the so-called angelic position is very complex. With a few pillows here and a rubbing of the clitoris there, an orgasm while staring into the eyes of my partner is a sure way to get me off.

8 Ways to Prevent the ‘Summer Slide’

$

0

The phrase “summer slide” might make you think of a water park or playground, but it actually refers to the mental atrophy that many kids — especially those who don't read — may experience during the three-month break between school terms. In fact, according to the National Summer Learning Association, two-thirds of the reading achievement gap among ninth graders can be attributed to summer loss. But just sticking a book in a kid’s hands isn't likely to have much impact, especially if they're not already naturally inclined to reading. Ahead, we've put together some less obvious (some might even say sneaky) ways to keep learning skills fresh and focused over the summer.

Math with baseball

Going to the ballpark or watching a game on TV? Keep track of the stats. There are plenty of opportunities for calculating averages, and it won’t even feel like work if it’s tied to what’s happening on the field. Play ball. Bonus if you track a specific team or players over the whole summer.

Measure twice (then multiply, divide, add or subtract)
Tackle a project that requires precise measurement. This could be building something (with supervision if needed) with wood, crafting something with paper, sewing, baking, modeling — if it requires careful measuring, it’s going to mean math practice. This is especially good for kinesthetic learners who learn best through movement and physical application of skills.

Fill a terrarium — and a field guide

Turn over rocks, logs and wherever else you might find insects and plants for a terrarium. This can be anything from an old fish tank to a clean pasta sauce jar. Large or small, put scientific skills to use by identifying different environments and habitats, predicting what’s likely to be found in various places and then creating a field guide to document discoveries.

Look to the stars

If you live near a college or university, find out if they have a planetarium that’s open to the public. If not, stargazing is free and available to anyone with access to real dark (this is tough for city dwellers). Kids can learn the constellations (and the origin myths behind them), then practice identifying them in the sky. If the city lights are just too bright for this, kids can recreate the patterns on a wall with glow-in-the-dark removable stars. Add-on for the arts — introduce kids to Gustav Holst’s orchestral suite The Planets and talk about why the planets sound the way they do.

Living history

Contact your local chamber of commerce and ask whether there are any historical treasures nearby — then go explore them. For more old-time learning, go to the library or your city or town hall and see what you can find about your discovery, especially interesting if you can find information from when it was first established.

Add-on for the arts — try to find a play or a movie that relates to this piece of history. For example, if you discover that there’s a statue of a Revolutionary War hero in your town, maybe you could watch 1776 (or listen to a song or two from Hamilton).

Interview an expert close to home

Call/FaceTime/write to an older relative and ask about a specific time in their life. If you know that she or he lived through a historic event such as the Vietnam War, you could ask for details about that era. Otherwise, just ask what it was like when they were young. You’re sure to get a whole new view of history. Reading tie-in — the I Survived series by Lauren Tarshis and the Dear America series by various authors give fast-paced accounts of historical events.

Graffiti poetry

Check out a few books of poetry geared toward kids, such as Shel Silverstein’s, or one or two books in verse, such as Love That Dog by Sharon Creech or Brown Girl Dreaming by Jacqueline Woodson for older readers. Choose some favorites, break out the sidewalk chalk and create a gallery of illustrated poems.

Add-on for the arts — find some kid-friendly slam poetry (like this) to watch (bonus if your local library or other youth organization sponsors an event like this that you can attend) and then maybe perform your own.

Book swap

Form a group to book-swap over the summer — six is a good number of kids to include. Choose three books that seem interesting to the group and get two copies of each book. Two kids get book A, two get book B and two get book C. Then they switch. The ones who had A get B, the ones who had B get C and the ones who had C get A. This way, everyone always has someone to talk about their reading with — which can sometimes be all the motivation needed to keep going with a book.

Real-Life Hero Tom Hardy's Been Fundraising for People in Need

Tom Hardy has played some of the craziest characters in the history of film and television. First there was Bane in The Dark Knight Rises. Then there was the crazy that is Mad Max. Don't even get me started on The Revenant, and no one would argue his character in Taboo is normal even a little.

More: Tom Hardy Becomes Real-Life Superhero After Stopping a Theft

At this point, no one would think you were out of line for questioning Hardy's character in real life. Who is this man who is so good at playing such creepers?

Well, it turns out, he's a really generous person. Buzzfeed has even dubbed him "the kindest celebrity around."

Hardy recently gained notoriety for starting a fundraiser for the victims of the Grenfell Tower fire, which killed at least 30 people and left many more injured. The page has already reached 92 percent of its £45,000 goal at the time of this writing.

More: Imma Need Tom Hardy to Read Me Bedtime Stories for the Rest of My Life Now

But this is far from the first time Hardy has put his money and fame into doing good. He also recently raised £39,000 for the victims of the Manchester attack at the Ariana Grande concert in May.

And Hardy doesn't just raise money, though that would be enough to warrant a good reputation as a nice guy. He also explains exactly where the money is going and how it will help, which encourages people to donate and also proves the impact individuals can have following disasters.

For example, Hardy said he researched appropriate charities for the funds in the Grenfell Tower fire. The money will go directly to victims and their families, paying for support like rehousing efforts and meeting immediate needs.

Basically, if you have any doubts about Hardy's decency after reading this article, you might actually be the one who's a little off your rocker.

Oh, also, don't just applaud Hardy. Get in on the donating party. Every little bit counts.

The Official Trailer for Pitch Perfect 3 is Aca-Everything

Your favorite girl gang is finally coming back to the big screen in the third and, what looks like, final installment of Pitch Perfect. The phenomenon, produced and directed by comedian Elizabeth Banks (aka Gail, the aca-nnouncer), is set to come back in December 2017.

Pitch Perfect 3 Trailer

Pitch Perfect 3 Trailer

The trailer acts more as a behind-the-scenes goodbye than a regular trailer. In an in depth talk and romp-around with Pitch Perfect 3’s director, Trish Sie, she shows us all the aspects of production on this film’s fun. From dance recitals to dog attacks to DJ Khalid, PP3 looks like it’s about to have it all.

More: Our Pitch Perfect drinking game will turn you into an inebriated Bella

“We’re taking you on a global tour with the Bellas,” says Sie. And damn, does that statement hold true. The behind the scenes action shows Anna Kendrick, star of Pitch Perfect and all around cool human, jumping off a burning boat; Rebel Wilson, also a star of Pitch Perfect and all around cool human, wearing a puffy sumo-wrestler-looking suit and being taken down by dogs; John Lithgow, Tony-, Emmy-, and Golden Globe-winning actor, tangoing with Wilson while wearing a fedora; and DJ Khalid Snapchatting himself and speaking in the third person. “DJ Khalid will be in the big movie, Pitch Perfect 3,” says Khalid.

More: The cast of Pitch Perfect sings their favorite songs for SheKnows

Pitch Perfect and Pitch Perfect 2 fans will be happy to see that all the Bellas have come back for the final go-around, which is super cool considering the Bellas will be traveling all over the world, presumably on tour, according to Sie. The Bellas on a professional tour? Yes, please!

More: Anna Kendrick's 20 best tweets, including that one about Fifty Shades

The behind the scenes also shows wrapping up shooting on the final film, which means a tearful goodbye for the Bellas. So get ready to bring some tissues, because it looks like this time, in their new post-grad life, the Bellas won’t be coming home to each other. It’s almost too on the nose for those post-grad/post-girl gang folks still getting used to the real world. Ugh…

“We’re all gonna miss this,” says Sie at the end of the trailer.

Yep. You hit the aca-nail on the aca-head, sister.

Corinne Olympios Allegedly Remembers Something About the BIP Incident

As the ongoing investigation into what exactly happened on the set of Bachelor in Paradise continues, new details are emerging about what Corinne Olympios may or may not remember about that fateful night. At this point in the proceedings, it's alleged information, but it could prove useful considering Olympios' legal team has not been granted access by Warner Bros. to the crucial tapes of the incident.

More: The BIP Fallout Continues — DeMario Jackson Has Been Fired From His Job

E! News was the first outlet to report on the details of Olympios' recollections of the evening. While these details should be taken with a grain of salt because they come via a source close to Olympios, not Olympios herself, they are compelling nonetheless. The source began by telling E! that "Corinne alleges that she hasn’t seen the tape of the events and she doesn’t remember much of the events of the night because she was blacked out for the majority of it. But the last memory she has is taking a shot of tequila."

More: Don't Worry — Carly Waddell & Evan Bass Are Still Getting Married on TV

The source also alleges that Olympios had very little to eat that day but was drinking some strong drinks, including Champagne and a dirty martini, which Olympios believes may have contributed to her blacking out. Zero mention was made of whether Olympios was encouraged to drink by a BIP producer or if this was Olympios' personal decision.

There are also alleged details about how Olympios got the bruises on her legs. At one point, other female cast members may have had to help Olympios, who may have been quite drunk at the time, around. For her part, Olympios cannot recall this portion of the event.

More: A New BIP Photo May Ruin Bachelorette Season 13 for Everyone

These details certainly support Olympios' claims that she was too drunk to consent to any sexual activity with another cast member, but without the tapes of the incident available to confirm, it's tough to say who is truly at fault. While it's heartening to see Olympios standing up for herself during this difficult time, it's truly tough to imagine what she must be going through.

My Friends Are Getting Thermography Instead of Mammograms — Here's Why

My friends and I are approaching the age when we need to get regular mammograms. I have been hearing women talk about this since I was a teenager, and they never painted a very pretty picture. As I was about to make my appointment, I asked my best friend how hers went, as I knew she'd had one very recently.

I was surprised when she told me she didn't end up getting a mammogram after all — her doctor recommended thermography instead. Thermography uses sensors to detect heat emitted from the breast tissue. When there is a tumor present in the breast, it increases blood flow, which produces more heat in the breast tissue.

MorePhysicians: A Woman's Choice to Be Child-Free Is Not Up for Debate

A mammogram takes an X-ray, which shows a picture of the actual tissue. A tumor looks different than normal, healthy breast tissue, so it is easy to see the difference.

While thermography and mammograms are both good for early detection, my friend said her experience was super-easy and she didn't experience any discomfort as some women do when the have a mammogram.

MoreI'm one of those women passing on pregnancy for the sake of the climate

It made me remember a few years back when my gynecologist mentioned mammograms did have false positives. Women were getting scared, then getting cut unnecessarily. Could this be a better option?

My friend certainly seemed to think so and told me it wasn't invasive at all. It required her to lie down with her breasts exposed for about 15 minutes with no machines touching her. She especially liked how she didn't have to lay her breast on a plate and have it squeezed with another plate before the X-ray was taken. Plus, you aren't exposed to any radiation during thermography.

MoreI had two kids & wanted to get my tubes tied, but my hospital said no

When I asked her if insurance covered it, she said it didn't, but it was only $100. Definitely worth it for some who dread the boob-smashing that a mammogram makes you go through.

However, after doing more research, I found that there are mixed reviews on thermography. While it is more comfortable, less invasive and only takes a few minutes, mammograms are still proven to be the most accurate test you can have and the actual compression of the breast only lasts a few minutes.

Dr. Ayala Rosenbaum of Rosetta Radiology told SheKnows that for now, mammography remains the gold standard in diagnosing breast cancer. Studies show that mammography picks up 83 to 95 percent of breast cancers, she said, adding that additional tests such as sonography can help bring that number even higher for certain women.

Rosenbaum also said when thermography does detect something, it is almost always correct, but needs further investigation, which usually results in an ultrasound or mammogram anyway.

"This is because thermography does not help in showing what is causing the positive read. It may be something benign. If something is seen on thermography, there is no way to biopsy or test the tissue to characterize it using a thermogram. That testing can be done with findings made with mammograms, sonograms, MRIs and other forms of imaging," Rosenbaum said.

Other options for breast cancer screenings besides sonography, mammograms, thermography, ultrasound or MRIs, such as nuclear breast imaging, which is an X-ray with lower doses of radiation used to detect breast cancer before there are any noticeable signs, are in the works right now.

So whether you prefer the comfort of thermography or the accuracy of a mammogram, we can all agree your breast health is important. No matter which option you choose, we all need to get checked as well as doing self-checks every month.

Unique Baby Names for Boys & Girls We Wish We'd Thought of First

Can we talk about the difference between trendy baby names and unique baby names?

It doesn't seem like there would be a huge departure between the two, but there is a big distinction: Trendy names can totally lead to baby naming regret when the trend dies off, whereas a thoughtfully unique baby name will stand the test of time.

And, yes, baby naming regret really happens to 18 percent of parents, according to a survey done in the U.K. Don't let the regret happen to you — or your child, for that matter. Opt for one of these cool, yet totally unique, names instead.

Friends, countrymen, all those hopelessly addicted to celebrity gossip, lend us your ears!

The Bey-Jay twins are finally here!

But the news didn't come from Beyoncé herself — and fans are a wee bit cranky about Beyoncé's dad, Mathew Knowles, stealing her thunder on Twitter and Instagram.

"They're here! #beyonce #twins #jayz #happybirthday,"Happy Birthday to the twins! Love, Granddad." (Ah, celeb dads. They're just like ours. Poor guy couldn't wait.)

US Weekly insists they've got the scoop on the sex of the twins: a boy and a girl, according to their "multiple sources." Hmm. OK. We'll believe it when Queen Bey confirms it, but it sounds like those who placed bets on a one-of-each set of twins based on Beyoncé's mismatched lingerie in her first birth announcement (baby blue panties with a pink-bowed bra), can pick up the keys to your various castles in the south of France. They're waiting on your new private jet with your new butler.

Those of you who missed by a sex, better luck next time. At the very least, we all get to return to the that thing we call breathing, and that's a pretty good consolation prize. Whew.

The Queen, er, Mama Bey, is said to be resting comfortably in Los Angeles. No word at this time on whether or not Blue Ivy did, in fact, witness the birth of her new siblings. Also no word at this time on whether there was a double rainbow shimmering over the hospital wing where the little demigods appeared. Or if the bodyguards were riding pegasuses. Pegasi. Whatever — you catch our (very excited) drift. This is big, big news, people.

Beyoncé and Jay Z's babies are arguably the most anticipated twins of all time, having steeped for nearly nine months in a mix of amniotic fluid and liquid platinum and pure Bey-hive honey. We will be sure to update you as soon as any further news makes its way to us, but we're pretty sure details will be scarce for a bit as Beyoncé and Jay Z settle in as the parents who are now outnumbered by their offspring.

In the meantime? Expect the internet to shatter into a million pieces, but, you know, in a nice way. Today, the world comes together. Meanwhile, behind closed doors in a hushed room full of clouds and smooth jazz, Bey and Jay stare at each other and mutter the song of millions of other parents of multiples: "OH MY LORD. Firecracker cakelettes recipe

Yields 10 – 14

Ingredients:

  • 1 box white cake mix
  • 4 egg whites
  • 1/2 cup oil
  • 1/2 cup water
  • 1 cup sour cream
  • Red and blue food coloring
  • 3 packages Pop Rocks candy
  • Black licorice ropes
  • White frosting (less than 1/4 cup)

Directions:

Step 1

Mix the white cake mix, egg whites, oil, water and sour cream for 3 – 4 minutes on medium speed. Divide the cake batter into 3 equal amounts, and add red and blue food coloring to 2 of the portions. Coat 3 (4 x 9-inch) bread pans with cooking spray, and lightly flour the bottoms. Add the three batters to the pans, and bake at 350 degrees F for 18 – 23 minutes. Allow them to cool, and then remove them from the pans.

Step 5

Put a portion of the red cake plugs back into the bottoms of the red cake circles. Pipe a line of frosting around the centers of the red and white cake circles. Stack the white cakes on top of the red cakes, and the blue cakes on top of the white cakes.

Ice the centers

Step 6

Add Pop Rocks down the hollow centers of the stacked cakes. Put a portion of the blue cake plugs back into the tops, covering the center filled with Pop Rocks.

Note: For maximum popping potential, pour the Pop Rocks into the cake centers no earlier than one hour before serving. The moisture in the cakes will cause the Pop Rocks to slightly snap and crackle on their own. In fact, they make a great sizzling sound on the plate. But after about four hours, the Pop Rocks lose most of their popping power, so plan accordingly.

Here's How to Call Out Sexual Harassment

$
0
0

We interrupt your regularly scheduled sex column to bring you a more serious topic you may be seeing in the media, hearing about at work and school or experiencing in your life. With so many cases of sexual harassment brought to light, the public is finally becoming more aware of an issue that many of us have faced for a very long time. This is leading to more open discussion, as well as opportunities to educate folks on what sexual harassment looks like.

By definition, sexual harassment is any and all unwelcome sexual advances or bullying of a sexual nature, and it can happen anywhere, whether it’s at your job, school or even on the street. The perpetrator can be any gender and can be a friend, stranger or someone in a position of power.

Rainn explains that some forms of sexual harassment include:

  • Making conditions of employment dependent on sexual favors
  • Physical acts of sexual assault
  • Requests for sexual favors
  • Verbal harassment of a sexual nature
  • Unwanted touching or physical contact
  • Unwelcome sexual advances

The bottom line is this: If you’re being made to feel uncomfortable by someone saying inappropriately sexual things to you or doing things of that nature, whether in person or online, this is wrong, and you have a right to protect yourself.

More: How to Get Your Sex Life Back After Having a Baby

So, when do you call sexual harassment out? As quickly as possible. This will, of course, depend on your individual situation, but generally, the sooner you do it after the incident takes place, the better. This makes the offender aware that their behavior is inappropriate. If you’re reporting it, it can help if you take action to document it immediately. If the harassment is happening online via email or social media, by all means, screenshot the interaction for reference.

How do you call sexual harassment out? This depends on the severity of the situation as well as the resources you have at hand. If we’re talking about catcalling, using sexist language you’re not OK with or someone sending you or showing you something you deem obscene, let the offender know. If for some reason they aren’t aware that their behavior could come across as unacceptable, you’ve just told them.

More: Jessica Drake’s Guide to Having Sex on Your Period

If the harassment is happening at work or school, please go to the authorities and report it. You can also file a report with your local law enforcement. Bring a friend for support. And if someone in your life is experiencing sexual harassment, be the friend who goes with them. Validate their feelings and support them. Sexual harassment is real, and it’s time to speak up out about it.

Nooo! Nestlé Candy Bars Could Disappear From Stores Soon

If Butterfingers are your go-to movie munchy or mini Nestle Crunch bars were the highlight of your childhood Halloweens, this is an extra sad Monday. Nestlé just announced that it's considering selling its American candy brands, which includes classic candy aisle mainstays like Butterfinger, Baby Ruth, Gobstoppers, 100 Grand, SkinnyCow, Raisinets and Crunch bars.

Now, before you go buying up your local drugstore and hoarding Butterfingers in your pantry, let's clarify — these products won't necessarily be gone forever if the sale happens. However, the candy bars could be sold under a new label and possibly have a new recipe or formula, depending on who buys the rights.

MoreMake candy in your slow cooker like a magic elf

"Nestlé will explore strategic options for its U.S. confectionery business, including a potential sale," the company said in a statement. Basically, nothing in life will ever be the same again.

If you're a fan of Nestlé's Toll House cookies, though, don't worry: Those won't be part of the sale, as they're held under a separate part of the company — as are Kit Kat bars, which are produced by Nestlé's international arm, not its American one.

Nestlé blames this decision on Americans being more interested in healthy snack choices. We may still love our sugar, but we’re eating less of it, and industries like candy and cereal are feeling the impact.

We're conflicted about this news. On one hand, hooray for U.S. citizens for finally taking their health into their own hands, getting educated and breaking our dependency (or at least starting to be less dependent) on sugars and processed foods. With our current obesity crisis and health care policy being very much in limbo, eating healthier is one simple way to keep our nation in better shape.

More: 20 desserts that use up all those broken candy canes

However, there's definitely going to be some nostalgic sadness seeing Butterfingers, Crunch bars and Baby Ruths disappear from the candy aisle (even if they reappear with different packaging). They were childhood staples!

Nestlé hopes to have a deal in place by the end of 2017, so if this post hasn't convinced you not to hoard candy bars, you have time to stock up.

In a humanitarian move much like one his mother, the late Princess Diana, might have done, Prince William broke royal protocol and hugged a grieving woman he met in a receiving line. The woman, identified by one Twitter user as a 78-year-old woman who lost her husband in the fire, appears to have her face buried in the prince's torso. Seeing the prince break with the rules in favoring of compassion and kindness is deeply reassuring.

Color us impressed by Britney Spears and Kevin Federline these days. No more contentious high-profile squabbles: Britney Spears and ex-husband Kevin Federline are chill co-parents to their two sons, Jayden, 10, and Preston, 11.

Federline talked to Bravo about their relationship as co-parents. "You fall into your routine, and it's really easy now... It wasn't always easy, but it's a lot easier now."

More: Britney Spears writes emotional letter to her sons with Kevin Federline

Currently, Spears is on tour, and her sons are with her. Federline is A-OK with the arrangement, but is clearly missing Jayden and Preston. He's eager to get back to spending time with his boys — especially Preston, whose budding DJ skills have Papa Federline pretty excited.

"Preston kind of knows how to DJ. He wants to learn more," Federline said. "I got him Ableton on his laptop, so he kind of messes with that. He hasn't completely dived into it, and I don't want to force him. I want to make sure it's something he really wants to do."

In addition to learning to DJ, Preston has a flair for hot music trends. "He's really big into the EDM trap music scene," Federline said. "He'll come to me, 'Have you heard this?' Looking for music for me to play."

Will the Spears-Federline crew be the talk of the club scene in 10 years? Hey, we wouldn't be surprised. Federline himself is a part-time DJ, and mama Britney is, well — Britney-effin'-Spears, y'all, in case you forgot.

More: K-Fed and Britney are hanging out again — and we're confused

So what's K-Fed doing with himself while Spears is on tour with their two sons? Well, Federline's got four other kids keeping him busy: Kaleb, 12, and Kori, 14, with ex-fiancée Shar Jackson and two other daughters with current wife Victoria Prince, whom he married in 2013.

"I'm used to not having all my kids [at once], and this is gonna be one of those years," Federline said of the boys being on tour with Spears. "When you are co-parenting, you have to be willing to give up some of the things you would really like to do."

We have to admit, it sounds like Federline seems to have really grown into his role as a father. "Having six, it feels like you're trying to control a basketball team. But it's worth it. All my kids are great; they get along. By the time you have six, you are so well seasoned," he said. "I can probably change a diaper with one hand and feed a kid at the same time."
