Jerry Seinfeld Had Every Right to Deny Kesha a Hug, Internet

Circle up, internet, because we need to have a serious talk. Today, we're going to learn about a little thing called personal space. It's really important, so pay attention.

The internet is a-buzzin' today over a little red carpet snafu that got caught on tape. According to the video evidence, Jerry Seinfeld was giving an interview when he was approached by Kesha. She told him she loved him. She asked him for a hug. Then — and this part is important — he said no.

She asked again, to which it appears he turned her down. This happened a total of three times. It was really cringey and it inspired tweets like this one:

Actually, there is something more infuriating: the way some people seem to think Kesha was entitled to that hug.

More: Dr. Luke Mercilessly Shamed Kesha for Her Weight

Why should Seinfeld be forced to hug her? Why should he allow his body to be touched when he doesn't want it to be? Imagine if Kesha were giving an interview and Seinfeld tried to badger her into giving him a hug she clearly didn't want to give. It would be kind of creepy and you'd feel pretty uncomfortable for Kesha, right? Because it's her body, and if she doesn't want a man to touch it, she shouldn't have to let him, yeah? Same thing applies here. Seinfeld didn't want a hug, so he didn't have to give or receive a hug. Full stop.

So, internet, let's take this prime opportunity to change the narrative around personal space. Instead of talking about how awkward this moment was, let's applaud Seinfeld for standing up for his personal space. Good talk, internet.

Breaking: Glow-in-the-Dark Doughnuts Exist

Let's state the obvious. Food trends are often (by definition?) ridiculous. For every bizarre flavor mashup, there’s a rainbow, galaxy or unicorn-themed Frappuccino or fast-food creation. Sometimes these concoctions are so over-the-top, we think our eyes are going to get stuck rolling back into our heads... but other times — like now — they're downright amazing.

Introducing magical glow-in-the-dark doughnuts, aka “glonuts,” which were invented at Black Star Pastry in Australia and recently went viral because of the OMG-worthy photos of the out-of-this-world dessert.

The craziest part about glonuts: They involve absolutely no artificial ingredients despite their otherworldly look. "We would never create anything that was unnatural, even if it was a great idea,” glonut creator and Black Star Pastry owner Christopher Thé told the Daily Mail.

The icing is actually made out of something called yuzu glaze, which gets a natural glow from vitamin B, meaning we can even delude ourselves that this treat is a healthy diet option.

Unfortunately, for now the glonuts are only available at Sydney's Vivid festival at the Glow Cave Dessert Bar through June 17. But don’t be sad. While we can’t yet get these doughnuts stateside, the more viral attention they get, the likelier it seems it's only a matter of time until someone brings Black Star's doughnuts across the Atlantic or creates their own version here.

In the meantime, you can get glow-in-the-dark cotton candy at Disney World.

Uh, seriously, what is in the water in Hollywood?

More: Will Beyoncé Let Blue Ivy Watch the Twins' Birth?

Just yesterday, George and Amal Clooney welcomed their twins. Beyoncé is due to give birth to a pair any day now. And now Jaime Pressly has announced that she's expecting twins. This is getting a little out of control.

Pressly shared her announcement exclusively with People magazine, revealing that she has twin boys on the way.

"Twins don’t run on either side of our families so we were completely shocked," she said. "This wasn’t IVF or anything like that. It was just a shock, and I’m like, 'Doctor, that’s impossible!'"

More: Jaime Pressly Opens Up About Her Secret Mastectomy

Pressly and her longtime boyfriend, Hamzi Hijazi, have been trying to get pregnant for a long time, she added, and the twins were actually a nice surprise.

"I’ve always wanted three kids and the older I’m getting, I’m like, 'Okay, maybe just one more would be nice,'" she said. "I was getting a little sad, but it was like, 'We’ll give you two in one. You don’t have to do another pregnancy.'"

Pressly already has a 10-year-old son whom she shares with her ex, Eric Calvo, and he's stoked to be a big brother.

"He’s been begging Hamzi and I to give him a sibling since he was in kindergarten," she said. "He’s very patient and sweet and gentle and is going to be the best little babysitter ever. He’s constantly kissing my belly."

We're also stoked about Pressly's baby news, but the crazy influx in celeb twins lately is definitely raising our eyebrows. Is it an Illuminati conspiracy? We're just going to go ahead and go with that.

Raising Body-Positive Kids After a Childhood Eating Disorder

Welcome to swimsuit season! The time of year when many women cringe, complain and attempt to hide their bodies. While (some) companies are making strides toward embracing all types of bodies, my social media feeds are still flooded with tales of moms who are embarrassed about their bodies.

More: 6 tips if you suspect an eating disorder in your child

While I believe every woman should feel comfortable and beautiful in what she wears, most of the time the discomfort women feel about their bodies has little to do with the woman underneath the clothes. We worry about what people think, what people will say.

I was 12 years old when I first discovered that eating was a choice. At least 30 million people of all ages and genders suffer from an eating disorder in the U.S. It has taken me a long time to develop a healthy relationship with my body and with food. I realized that controlling food was a way to control my body and a way to feel like I had control in my life. Now that I am in a different place, both with my physical and mental health, it is important for me to lay the groundwork for my children’s health as well.

I credit my children for helping me embrace body positivity. Not only did growing them, birthing them and breastfeeding them give me a newfound appreciation for the strength and limitations of my body, I want them to feel proud of their own bodies and what they can do. I can’t protect them from what they’ll hear outside our home, but I can lay the foundations so that hopefully what’s inside their hearts speaks the loudest.

More: Mom's bold post about body positivity goes viral

Here are the things I teach my children, because there’s so much more to building body positivity than just deciding to love your body.

Use your body

I used to think of my body as an adversary. Now, I visualize myself and my body as a team. I make choices to fuel my body and my body allows me to care for my children. The more I move and use my body, the less focused I am on how it looks and I can concentrate on how it feels. My kids and I use our bodies and enjoy them. We go hiking. We dance. We play. We jump on the bed. We talk about the things our bodies can do and how it feels to do those things. Our bodies need food, sleep and love, and exercise is not something that is done to make our bodies look a certain way.

Food is fuel

Food used to be forbidden. Now that I let myself enjoy food, I have become more aware of how different foods make me feel. Chocolate makes me feel good (endorphins and caffeine), but later makes me feel hangry (sugar crash). If I focus on what I need (energy and a mood pickup), I can choose food to provide that. A handful of roasted garbanzo beans and a round of giggles with my kids fulfills me in a healthy way. As a nursing mom, calories equal supply. If I want to feed my children, I have to feed myself.

In our home, food and eating are part of body autonomy. My children know the phrase, "my body, my choice," and use it often. This extends to their relationship with food. They let me know when they are hungry. They choose from the foods we have available. They let me know when they're finished eating. Some days, they'll want more servings of food. Other days, they may not be as hungry. I listen to them and trust them to take care of their bodies. This in turn teaches them to listen to and trust their bodies. When children are forced to clear their plates, eat foods they don't like or foods are treated as rewards or "forbidden fruit," food becomes something that symbolizes control. Often, children will sneak food, refuse food or binge on food in response.

Express your feelings

When things around me start to feel overwhelming, I want to control. This is where food used to factor in. Now, I focus on healthy things that I can control, most important, my response to my emotions. I can choose my words to identify the emotion. I take deep breaths. I empower myself to make a plan to approach a problem. When my children have big feelings, they are given space to express those feelings, tools to process and manage those feelings and lots of hugs and love. Food can often become a coping mechanism for emotions, often through bingeing or restricting. With emotional resources, food can simply be body fuel.

Fake it 'til you make it

This is crucial. The more I look at my face and body and say, "I look beautiful," the more I start to feel it. Skinny doesn't equal beautiful. Skinny equals skinny. Beautiful is what I make it. Our children learn best by example. If we stand in the mirror and focus on our perceived flaws, our children will learn to search their bodies looking for flaws. If it would break your heart to hear your daughter look in the mirror in a bathing suit and say, “I don’t have the body to pull this off,” then she should never hear you saying it to yourself. Not everyone loves their body in its current state. If you want to teach your children to love their bodies, you must show them how by loving your own.

More: Body-shaming: It's not just for girls

Practice what you preach

I don't always like my body, but when I focus on the things it has done — carried my children, birthed them, nursed them — it makes it almost impossible not to love my body. It is more important to me to raise body-positive children than to be thin. If you tell your children they’re perfect just the way they are, serve yourself up a dose of that medicine. Look in the mirror and instead of focusing on what you would change, focus on what you like or even love about your body. There’s nothing wrong with having goals for your body. There is a way to talk about those goals in a positive way. "I want to be stronger so I will practice lifting these heavy weights," or "I want to teach my body to run really far, so I will practice running every day until I can run as far as I can."

7 Reasons Alpha Women Have Better Relationships

$

With Season 5 of House of Cards now available for your Netflix bingeing pleasure, it seems like a fitting time to pay homage to one of the most badass ladies on TV: Claire Underwood. Claire is the epitome of an alpha lady, and being with someone like her takes a certain kind of person. You need to be one confident individual to make a relationship with a strong-ass woman work. And if you do, you'll be rewarded with a fulfilling, challenging, thrilling partnership.

“An alpha woman knows what she wants and is able to communicate that," says sexologist Dr. Nikki Goldstein, author of Single But Dating. "She has the strength to try new things and seek adventures. She can take control when needed, allowing someone else to sit back and relax every so often.” Alpha women are the greatest of them all.

Madam Underwood has taught us well when it comes to relationships. From supporting Frank all the way to the White House while nurturing her own high-powered career to dumping his ass when he started to take her for granted at the end of Season 3, we can all learn a few things from Claire Underwood.

Here are seven awesome things alpha women bring to the table in relationships.

We know our worth

Alpha women don't date jerks. We don't have time for that. We know we deserve to be treated like a goddess. Look at Claire. She never accepts less than the best treatment from Frank or anyone else.

Gabby, 26, of New York City considers herself the alpha partner in her relationship, and says, “We [alphas] won’t play games. I know what I’m worth and I know that I'm great on my own, I don’t fall into traps, settling for someone just because they pay attention to me or will stick around.”

Strong women don't need anyone to stick around who isn’t worthy of her. You can either treat us the way we know we should be treated, or we'll kick you to the curb.

More: My Marriage Is Sex-Free & There's Nothing Wrong With It

We don't play games

If you’re looking for a life partner, you need someone who isn’t going to play around. An alpha woman doesn’t want a boyfriend or girlfriend who's just looking for a good time, but rather someone who's going to take on life with her.

“They need to be significantly contributing to my day-to-day life, making it better than it was before and treating me the way that I demand anyone else in my life treat me," says Gabby. "That doesn't mean I don't make compromises — I do — but I don't ever sacrifice anything about myself that I feel is essential to who I am. I've found this leads to a mutual respect that is tough to achieve if you're not aware of your strength and qualities.’”

We can take care of ourselves

You’ll never need to baby an alpha woman. If we're high-maintenance, it’s because we can maintain ourselves. Marie, 24, of Boston has been in a relationship with her on-again, off-again boyfriend for three years, but says that she likes taking care of herself: “My mother raised me to be independent," she says. "You can be high-maintenance, but you better figure out how to be high-maintenance without relying on a partner. Learn to be able to provide for yourself.”

An alpha woman does need to remember that while being tough is fabulous, showing softness and vulnerability in certain situations can be the test of true strength. In other words, take off that armor every once in awhile. “It's great to be an alpha female but you also need to know how to balance that with being strong enough to let your guard down," says Goldstein.

We're super-ambitious

Alpha women have major career (and life) goals and are willing to work hard and sacrifice to get where we want to be. We're looking for someone who can handle our ambition, has some of his or her own and will be with us on the way to the top. Hi, Claire Underwood!

“Being a strong woman, alpha women can expect a lot in return," says Goldstein. "If she is a high achiever or a capable woman, she will want those around her to be of the same standards."

However, just like the strain viewers see Claire and Frank experience on HOC, Marie says there can be tension when it comes to balancing work and her partner’s ego. “He doesn't see himself like I see him," says Marie. "Because of my career and success, he reverts to thinking he's not good enough or he's going to lose me. He competes with my job. Sometimes he'll get wildly offended if I put my work before him — and as much I love him, sometimes my career comes first.” It can be a delicate balance to achieve, but when it is executed well, you're in serious power-couple territory.

Our personalities are electrifying

There's nothing quite like an alpha women. We turn every head, are often the life of the party and can be the woman other people want to be. Through a combination of wit and intrigue, we have a personality that is utterly dynamic.

Sierra, 24, of Miami, Florida, has been with her fiancé for three years. Sierra says that being an alpha has always been something her girlfriend appreciates about her. “She admires my strength," says Sierra. "She tells me I’m the center of everything. She used to joke about how I was a little ‘scary,” but how my personality is my best trait. It’s sexy knowing what you want and not be afraid to ask for it, you know?”

More: 6 Mistakes Women Make In Bed According to Porn Stars

We're never boring

Alpha women aren't afraid to speak our minds, challenge the status quo, and take the path of most resistance if that's the one that's going to be the most rewarding. We relish the chance to have a fiery debate, don't back down during uncomfortable moments and can hold our own in most situations simply because we know who we are and aren't afraid to show it.

While this can make for an exhausting relationship at times, overall, it means a life full of richness, laughter, good conversation, adventures and memorable moments. Wouldn't you rather have that kind of life and relationship than one that's vanilla, easy and predictable?

We're with you because we want you, not because we need you

Alpha women are rarely codependent. Claire is with Frank because she chooses to be, not because she thinks she needs him. “Alpha women don't need someone — they want someone," says Malgosia, 27, of New York City. "Those two things don't sound that different, but they're worlds apart."

If you’re a true alpha, you’re going to be looking for a partner who measures up in the same way. “It takes [another] alpha to get an alpha woman," says Malgosia. *Mic drop.*

Mischa Barton Nabbed a Boyfriend Who's a $574 Millionaire

At some point in our lives, we’ve all felt bad for Mischa Barton, the 31-year-old actress who’s had a rough go at life for the past 10 years. Between her infamous drug and partying addictions in the early 2000s and her most recent time spent in court over her ex-boyfriend’s selling of “revenge porn,” the O.C. alum has been begging for some better days. And those days are here.

More: Lay off, press: Mischa Barton's illness is no joke

E! News revealed today that Barton’s new beau is a gorgeous and hunky Australian model, who also happens to be a millionaire, by the name of James Abercrombie. The two met at a party in Los Angeles, and after going on a quick little trip to France, have been noted as dating exclusively, according to Abercrombie’s modeling agency, Bucknall Management/FMR Model Management. His fortune comes from his father, Andrew Abercrombie, the former treasurer of the Victorian Liberal Party in Australia.

Good looking? Heir to millions? And liberal? Sign. Me. Up.

Barton, of course, didn’t necessarily need to gold dig. She has made a name for herself all on her own and played a huge role in the O.C.’s success, so to say, “She’s only dating him because he’s rich,” is rich in itself. Not only has she been successful as an actress, but in the social justice department, she’s doing her part. Barton’s court case, and court victory, against her ex-boyfriend stands against lack of consent within relationships. Her ex was not only releasing her sex tapes, but selling them, which Barton and her lawyer called “revenge porn.” The court banned the revenge porn and ordered her ex to keep his distance.

More: Mischa Barton's lawyer isn't messing around with these sex tape rumors

After such a trying time for Barton, it’s nice to see she’s settling in with someone who, at this point, seems like a positive reinforcement in her life. She has yet to post any sort of Instagram of the two of them, but be on the lookout for the beyond-pretty couple on social media.

Debbie Allen's Strategy for Dealing with Condescending Men Is Everything

As women, it’s unfortunately inevitable that some creepy dude is going to pull some creepy move on you in the most unprofessional way while you’re at work. It’s always been a part of life for women in any field of work where men dominate. And yes, it’s even been a part of Debbie Allen’s life, badass actress, choreographer, dancer, and recipient of this year’s Lifetime Achievement Award.

More: All the times women made TV & film history dating back to 1915

In a quick interview with Elle, Allen discussed a moment while working on the 1980’s television hit Fame, when her director patted her on the butt and talked down to her. She said, "I had a director—a man—pat me on my butt one time when I was choreographing Fame, and tell me, 'Don't worry your little heart about where the camera is.'" According to Allen, all she did was give her opinion about where the camera should be in relation to her choreography. She was doing, ya know… Her job.

Allen goes on to tell how she handled the situation.

Ladies, Debbie Allen has spoken. We have no excuses not to stand up for ourselves now. Not only did Allen not get in trouble, but she gained more respect from the experience, and it’s something that she’s no doubt carried with her through the rest of her career. Allen now stars in Grey’s Anatomy as Dr. Catherine Avery, where she says not only are the female characters strong, but for every 24 episodes in a season, “more than 12 will be directed by women.”

Thanks to Debbie Allen’s part in the TV and film industry, we have some choreographed steps in the right direction.

20 Clean Pop Songs Your Kids Can Listen to That Won't Make You Squirm

One of my earliest memories consists of riding around in my mom's old white Volvo screaming the lyrics to Bobby Brown's "Don't Be Cruel." My brothers and I knew every word and bopped around in the backseat having the time of our lives. The beat was funky and we just felt so... cool.

It seems like in the '80s and '90s, it was a whole lot easier to let your kids listen to the radio. Sure, there were some songs back then that were about sex and drugs, but most of them weren't making it onto pop stations. We may not be able to say the same for Brown's personal life, but even the lyrics to his songs back then were pretty clean. And, hey, we were listening to him back in the dark ages before the internet, so we were blissfully unaware of what went on behind the scenes.

Fast-forward to today, and when you turn the radio on with kids in the car, it's a total cringefest. If you've ever heard a child under the age of 8 sweetly sing all of the lyrics to Tove Lo's "Habits (Stay High)," then you know what I'm talking about.

More: Will Beyoncé Let Blue Ivy Watch the Twins' Birth?

But then again, blasting Raffi on a road trip doesn't exactly sound like fun — and listening to the Frozen soundtrack even one more time might lead to a parental meltdown of epic proportions at this point. There has to be a happy medium between raunchy sex- and violence-filled lyrics and annoying kids tunes, right?

Thankfully, there are some kid-friendly pop songs out there that are enjoyable for adults.

1. "What Do I Know?" — Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran

Ed Sheeran

Who doesn't love Ed Sheeran? This song is all about saving the world with music and love. Positive vibes and so catchy too.

2. "Symphony" — Clean Bandit featuring Zara Larsson

I mean, "clean" is in the name of the band, so this song has to be a winner, right? This ditty has clean lyrics and is total dance-party material.

3. "Something Just Like This" — The Chainsmokers & Coldplay

The lyrics are obviously open to interpretation, but it seems to us like "Something Just Like This" is celebrating the superheroes that walk among us and the fact that there is something fantastic about being "normal." Kids will love singing about superheroes and grown-ups love the positive message. Both will love the fun, futuristic beat. We'll just cross our fingers that no one under the age of 17 asks what a chain-smoker is.

Y'all, if you had told me last year that I would be putting Miley Cyrus on a kid-friendly playlist, I would have laughed in your face. But Cyrus has reinvented herself yet again, and "Malibu" is a summery, sweet song with a country twang.

5. "Thunder" — Imagine Dragons

Now here's a song that a parents can totally appreciate along with the offspring. Imagine Dragons are so cool, and "Thunder" is about setting goals and shattering expectations. And it's just a darn good song. The official video might be a little scary for younger kids, but the lyric video (above) let's you listen without the visuals.

6. "(No One Knows Me) Like the Piano" — Sampha

Sampha

Even kids can appreciate a good ballad. Sampha sings about his passion for music and how much time he spent behind the keys of the piano in the home where he grew up in this sweet slow jam. So much soul in this song — even kids will be able to feel it.

Not all of her songs are kid-appropriate (we're looking at you "Love Game"), but "Born This Way" is super-empowering and Gaga's overall vibe is all about inclusion — which is something we can totally get behind. But for the love of God, just don't let them watch the official video for the song.

9. "Kill Em With Kindness" — Selena Gomez

Selena Gomez

This one has got a cool dance track and a whistle in the background that your kids will pick up and probably drive you crazy with — but, hey, how can you hate any song that's main lyrics are "kill 'em with kindness"? Some of the dancing in Gomez's video is a tad suggestive, but the song has a great message.

10. "Cheap Thrills" — Sia

11. "Dancing on the Sun" — Bahari

This is a total summer anthem for kids who are out enjoying summer break. The lyrics are clean and the song's got a totally hippy, kinda '60s feel to it.

12. "One of Those Days" — Little Big Town

OK, so technically Little Big Town is a country group, but the line between country and pop is totally blurred nowadays and "One of Those Days" is so uplifting, we couldn't leave this fun, kid-friendly song off the list.

13. "Firework" — Katy Perry

Common Sense Media says this "unusually clean" Katy Perry song emphasizes self-esteem. It's profanity-free, has no references to sex or substances and encourages kids to rise above their insecurities, light their inner spark and let their colors shine. You go, Katy Perry.

Yes, Flo Rida is behind "Right Round" — the ditty about strippers that's the theme song for The Hangover — but "Good Feeling" is surprisingly clean and has a positive message about following your dreams.

19. "Pompeii" — Bastille

"Pompeii" is fun and educational: There are actual references to historical events in the song that might inspire kids to do a little research. Plus, it's just a really fun, danceable party tune.

20. "Hurricane" — The Vamps

Hurrican - The Vamps

Hurrican - The Vamps

The Vamps have already shown up on various kid TV networks, and their song "Hurricane" is featured in Alexander and The Terrible, Horrible, No Good, Very Bad Day with Steve Carell. This song is kinda in the same vein as Timberlake's "Can't Stop the Feeling" — it's cheery, fun and makes you want to get up and dance.

Expert tip: Common Sense Media advises parents to listen to appropriate music when the kids are within earshot. "Your child will sing along with whatever you select, so make sure you choose songs with lyrics you won't mind your child repeating if you aren't around," it says on their website.

Putin Wants You to Know That He Doesn't 'Have Bad Days' Because He's Not a Woman

Manly man Vladimir Putin emphasized his manliness recently when he told filmmaker Oliver Stone: “I am not a woman, so I don’t have bad days.”

Ohhhhhh, he must be talking about how women are systemically marginalized because of archaic patriarchal power structures resulting in us having bad days because we have to try harder to even attempt to get equal footing.

Except, he’s not.

Instead, he has taken a cue from BFF Donald Trump and followed the time-honored tradition of men in politics trying to use menstruation to assert themselves.

More: How TV Shapes the Way We Look at Periods

So why doesn’t Putin have bad days? Allow him to explain:

“I am not trying to insult anyone,” he said in the documentary, guaranteeing that whatever came next would most certainly be insulting.

“That’s just the nature of things,” he continued. “There are certain natural cycles.”

So, periods.

Unfortunately, this is nothing new.

More: "Period in a Petri Dish" Could Have a Big Impact on Reproductive Research

In a 2015 Republican debate, Trump famously said that former Fox News host Megyn Kelly had “blood coming out of her wherever” after she had the nerve to ask him tough questions. Later that year, he couldn’t stop talking about Hillary Clinton taking a quick bathroom break during a debate, saying it was “too disgusting” to talk about.

Trump’s menstruation obsession began before his political ambitions according to a producer who worked with him on The Apprentice. In one instance, the former producer said that Trump commented on a contestant, saying, “her breasts were so much bigger at the casting. Maybe she had her period then.” How do we know this? Because his mic was on, and according to the producer, he knew that and didn’t care. Then, during an episode of Celebrity Apprentice, Trump told viewers that gymnast Shawn Johnson “had a monthly woman’s problem.” Because, you know, it’s a crucial plot point in a reality “business” show.

While there is no shortage of examples of politician period-shaming lately, it is definitely not new. Back in 1970, Dr. Edgar Berman, a retired surgeon and member of the Democratic Party’s Committee on National Priorities tried to put Congressperson Patsy Mink of Hawaii in her place when she asked her party to focus more on women’s issues. Berman really cast a wide net, disqualifying women for menstruating and going through menopause, citing hypothetical situations like a “menopausal woman president who had to make the decision of the Bay of Pigs,” a bank president “making a loan under these raging hormonal influences at that particular period” and a “slightly pregnant female pilot making a difficult landing.”

More: Turns Out Period Synching Is a Menstrual Myth

So to recap, according to Berman — and those who subscribe to his theories — women can’t be trusted when they’re menstruating, pregnant or menopausal. In other words, when they are in possession of a uterus.

5 Ways to Avoid Sabotaging Your Long-Awaited Summer Vacation

You may not associate the words "summer" or "vacation" with stress, but the truth is in order to take real time off from our jobs, responsibilities and everyday lives, there's a lot that needs to be done — and that pressure can cause stress.

Whether it's the anxiety of tying up every loose end at work (impossible) or figuring out how to pay for all the activities and food you and your loved ones will be consuming, vacations aren't always the purely fun, worry-free periods we wish they were.

In fact, a recent survey of 1,037 American adults revealed just how stressed many of us get about vacations. Commissioned by Wyndham Vacation Rentals, the study shows 1 in 3 people canceled or rescheduled a trip due to stress, 2 in 3 vacationers were overwhelmed by the options presented to them while on vacation and 3 in 10 travelers didn't feel relaxed until a couple of days into their vacations as a result of work. Jeez!

While you're not alone if you've ever felt that taking a vacation costs you more in money or stress than it might even be worth, there are some tactics you can use to nix anxiety, relax and actually enjoy your time off. Experts shared their best vacation stress-busting tips below.

More: How to Entertain Kids on Long Flights

Start packing early

Sounds simple, but it can make a big difference in whether your vacation starts out rushed and frazzled or calm and organized. "Get the suitcase out and slowly start packing the week before," says Juicy Juice’s 100 percent family time expert Meredith Sinclair, author of Well Played: The Ultimate Guide to Awakening Your Family's Playful Spirit. "Don’t leave it to the last minute. Then remember that whatever you forget, you can find at a drugstore." If your kids are old enough to pack themselves, tell them to get a head start too so you can all have a relaxed departure.

Prepare so you can relax

Other than packing early, there are a few other things you can do before hitting the road that can help make your time away more blissful. "If you're traveling internationally or elsewhere that might raise a red flag to your credit card company, make sure to call the bank and let them know to prevent your card being disabled," says Ellen Paderson, owner of Smiles and Miles travel consultancy. "Also, assign a trusted friend or neighbor to take care of any emergencies in case of a flood in the house, an alarm going off or whatever." This way, you can breathe easy while away from home.

Unplug from work

Yes, it's pretty much the definition of vacation, but given how commonplace it is for people to work from home, freelance or generally be online at all hours, it can be hard to remember how vital it is to really unplug from work emails, IMs and projects of all kinds while you're away. According to Melanie Fish, family travel expert for HomeAway, even working for as long as an hour during your vacation day can dilute the experience. "Research shows that your memories of a trip suffer if you work more than an hour a day while on vacation," says Fish. "And those who used laptops vs. smartphones or tablets also had significantly more trouble remembering their vacations." So put it away, already!

Manage expectations

One trap that many of us fall prey to on vacation is being let down when our trip doesn't meet our sky-high expectations. (After all, most of us spend weeks or months fantasizing about this one week — that's a lot of pressure!) "Without being too Debbie Downer-ish, discuss the fact that there may be some issues that may arise, such as bad weather or a less-than-perfect hotel," says Paderson. "If this should happen, remember and remind your loved ones that there's no perfect trip, so everyone needs to go with the flow and be flexible. Make sure kids have a plan for what they may want to do in case of bad weather. They need to have lower expectations so they won't be disappointed."

Make re-entry a staycation

If the worst part about vacation is coming home, then do what you can to make coming home easier and more pleasant for everyone. "Post-vacation blues aren't listed in a medical book, but they're real," says Sinclair. "Soften re-entry into your real life by arriving back home a day early. Don’t rush to unpack or do laundry. Take it slow and treat that last day like a staycation. Laugh. Play games. Be silly and then right before bed, ask each kid what they're looking forward to now that they're home. Remind them that home is a pretty amazing place to be." Amen to that!

Peruvian Man Copies 13 Reasons Why Suicide, Down to Leaving Tapes

Ever since 13 Reasons Why — the Netflix show chronicling one teen’s decision to take her own life — first aired, there have been concerns that the drama romanticizes suicide and could result in imitators. But this is no longer purely speculative. A young man in Peru recently died by suicide, and like the main character in the show, left recordings behind detailing why he did it.

More: Why I Have Big Problems with 13 Reasons Why

Franco Alonso Lazo Medrano, 23, jumped from his fourth floor apartment after shouting, “I can’t stand heartbreak,” Peruvian media outlets reported. Although he survived the fall — which his mother witnessed — he was declared dead when he arrived at the San Juan de Dios hospital.

Medrano left two suicide notes: one saying goodbye to a friend named Claudia and the other with instructions on who should listen to the tapes he recorded on his computer before his death — allegedly those he said drove him to take his own life. Although none of the notes specifically mentioned 13 Reasons Why, the scenario was virtually identical to the plot of the Netflix hit.

Since the show’s debut in April, there have been calls to ban even talking about it in schools; on the other end of the spectrum, some have suggested that it should be mandatory viewing for students.

Mommy-Shamers Attack Jessica Simpson for Bikini Pic of Her Daughter

Oh dear Lord, here we go again. Mommy-shamers in the HOUSE!
This time, Jessica Simpson is the target of the day. Legions of mommy-shamers are up in arms that Simpson posted a sweet photo on Instagram of her 5-year-old daughter, Maxwell, posing in a bike helmet and in a bathing suit.
Maxwell

Maxwell

Simpson's message? Well, her caption read "safety first" — an apparent nod to Maxwell's bike helmet.
But critics of the photo say that Simpson's choice to post a bathing suit shot of Maxwell online is a dangerous move.
We sighed heavily reading the comments, particularly the "I would never"s that are the hallmark of mommy-shamers everywhere.
"I would NEVER post a picture like this of my 5-year-old daughter!" one sanctimonious (and apparently perfect) parent posted. "This is an account anyone can see. Jessica shame on you for exposing your daughter instead of protecting her!"
Um, we're thinking that bike helmet is a pretty good indicator that Jessica is doing A-OK at protecting Maxwell, and maybe everybody needs to stop sexualizing young girls, m'kay? Because what Maxwell's wearing is pretty much the summer uniform for a lot of little girls. And making a big ugly kerfuffle about what a 5-year-old is wearing on a hot day in an innocent pic taken by her mother seems unnecessary and unhelpful — even if her mom is a celebrity.
We hate that this is where we are as parents in 2017. Social media is full of ominous doomsday warnings of creepers and perverts and pedophiles. Do horrible people exist? Sure. Is one photo of a beloved kid clowning around in a bathing suit and a bike helmet a breach of good parenting? We think not.
"Please lock down the pictures like this to only true friends," another member of Jessica Simpson's Instagram fan base commented. "There are disgusting people out there who would use this picture for bad things. Never post pictures of young girls in bathing suits for the public to see!"
And still more:
"A child posing like that... that's just creepy," said another commenter. "If I had a daughter that age I [wouldn't let her] wear a tiny bikini like that and pose herself like a model."
Ah, the old "if I had a daughter that age" — that's a group almost as fun as the "I would never" club. And have any of you ever been around a 5-year-old girl? They pose like models like it's their job, peeps! They pose, they prance, they dress up, they dress down and they're not doing it for anyone but themselves. Can we all kindly stop judging?
"I like Jessica, and I think this picture is cute, but it should only be shared privately," one more commenter wrote. "Otherwise I've got 2 words for you: JonBenét Ramsey."
To pull JonBenét Ramsey out of her grave and into this discussion is what's really creepy — not Maxwell chilling on a summer day.
The revolting, punishing comments go on and on. In the mood to lose your faith in humanity a little more? By all means, check them out at the original post. We were glad to see, though, that many of Simpson's fans came to her defense.
"It's a BODY!" said one pragmatic commenter. "If it was a little boy in swim trunks, no one wouldn't bat an eye or utter a word! Quit #bodyshaming girls. Women have enough expectations without adding the weight of others judgments. It's skin, it's a swimsuit, it's summer... HAVE FUN!!!"
"I'm sorry that people have to sexualize your daughter and try to make you feel bad about something fun and innocent," said another fan.
Damn straight. She's 5, her mom obviously adores her, she's rocking her bike helmet and bathing suit with the kind of confidence most of us have beaten out of us by the age of 15. Stop with the "suggestive pose" crap. Knock off the sexualization and the judgy-as-hell predator warnings, which honestly are pretty freaking creepy and unnecessary.
Can't we all just have a nice summer — and snap photos of our kids being kids without being accused of dangling them as pedophile bait?
Because if that's what you see when you look at Jessica Simpson's picture of her daughter, maybe you're the problem. Just a thought.

The Trailer for Netflix's New Thriller Gypsy Has Arrived, & It's Creepy

There's a new trailer out for Naomi Watts' Netflix original series Gypsy, and we're just gonna go ahead and pencil in a Netflix and chill day on June 30 when this one drops.

More: Change Is Scary, and No One Knows It Better Than Newly Single Naomi Watts

Watts stars as Manhattan therapist Jean Holloway, who starts to push the boundaries of professional relationships with her patients and get way too involved in their lives — and the lives of those they're close to. The new trailer shows Watts' character getting real cozy with one patient's (ex?) girlfriend. Also, she's creepy AF. See for yourself:

The new trailer also shows some glimpses of Holloway's relationship with her husband, played by Billy Crudup, who isn't falling for any of her bullshit. She clearly is a repeat offender when it comes to breaking all the rules for mental health professionals, and yet somehow she's still getting away with it. How is this a thing? So many questions. Gonna have to watch this one.

The new trailer is even creepier than the first trailer, which showed Watts solemnly reciting the Hippocratic Oath and guaranteeing she's going to be one of the eeriest characters ever on TV.

Ivanka Trump's Starbucks Order Matches Her Personality Perfectly

Ivanka Trump may have grown up with a father who lived in a gold tower that literally had their last name emblazoned on top of it, but I guess in some ways, she's, uh, just like us? Trump was spotted at Starbucks in the Dupont Circle neighborhood of Washington, D.C. Her order is the least surprising thing of all time: a nonfat vanilla latte with no whipped cream.

Just when you think a person can't get any more bland and humorless, they opt for skim milk and reject the fluffy cloud of whipped cream that's the only thing that can redeem such a mediocre drink order. Sigh.

Instead, you get the nearly substanceless, beige mess that is a nonfat vanilla latte: sickly sweet vanilla syrup trying to mask the bitterness of the espresso, with only some watery skim milk to try to balance things out. Blech.

But hey, Trump actually went to Starbucks herself and didn't make some poor intern hustle over there to get her latte for her, so I guess at least there's that! Ivanka Trump: kinda, sorta, not really, but a little bit like us.

Brad Pitt Insinuates Donald Trump Has Killed Us All

Well, this is bleak.

More: Angelina Jolie Chooses First Movie Project Since Split From Brad Pitt

Brad Pitt has some opinions about Donald Trump's decision to withdraw the U.S. from the Paris Climate Accord, and predictably, he's not pleased with the president's move here.

Pitt was on the Jim Jefferies Show this week, where his appearance on the episode included a lot of talk about the U.S. stepping away from the agreement. "The world is still grappling with [Donald] Trump withdrawing from the Paris Accord, and we wanted to address it one more time before we say goodnight," host Jefferies said. "To help us understand climate change and what it means for the world, he’s our own Jim Jefferies Show weatherman."

More: Brad Pitt Paints a Very Bleak Picture in Rare Interview About His Divorce

That weatherman was, of course, Pitt, who was dressed like a pretty stereotypical old-school weatherman in an oversize brown blazer. He stood in front of the weather map, where every continent was an ominous shade of red to show rising climates.

Brad Pitt talks climate change on the Jim Jeffries show

Brad Pitt talks climate change on the Jim Jeffries show

"Things are going to be getting warmer in this area here," he said, gesturing at a full half of the globe and then turning and gesturing at the other half, adding, "And this area here." Jefferies then asked Pitt what might be expected in future forecasts, and Pitt turned to face the camera, dramatically deadpanning, "There is no future."

More: Brad Pitt's Helping Chris Cornell's Kids Heal After Their Father's Death

That might be a little melodramatic, but Trump's stance that climate change is something we can ignore is obviously harmful for all people alive now and for future generations. We're not all dead yet, but if Pitt's to be believed, the end is nigh. As someone who has been speaking about climate change for years through his work with the Clinton Global Initiative, Pitt is someone who might actually know a thing or two about this stuff, so yikes.

Why Did I Come Into This Room?

$
0
0

It happens more and more lately. I walk the 15 steps from the kitchen island to my pantry and then stare at the shelves thinking, “Now, what did I need in here?” Somehow, I have completely forgotten why I came into the room in less than 45 seconds. Luckily, if I stand there long enough, it comes back to me.

It’s not that I am worried about my forgetfulness. It is relatively minor — more a brain fart than a real memory lapse. I do not think it is the sign of something more serious, at least right now. It’s more that I am annoyed at myself and can’t believe what a total sieve my mind can be these days. I wish I could buy earplugs to somehow stop small pieces of information from falling out of my mind. How awesome would it be if that really worked? I'll bet you Mark Cuban would definitely give me a sweet Shark Tank deal for that idea.

MoreSarah Hyland Responds to Concerns Over Weight Loss

Mild forgetfulness is a normal part of aging, and I hate to admit it, but I am aging.

“Natural cellular and vascular changes in the brain as we age make us all forget things occasionally as we get older. It may take a bit longer to learn new things, remember certain words or find our glasses. These changes are common and are just signs of normal, age-related mild forgetfulness,” Dr. Madhav Thambisetty, clinical investigator and chief of the unit of clinical and translational neuroscience at the National Institute on Aging/National Institute of Health, tells SheKnows.

Of course, it's human nature to get a little concerned when you are having memory issues. According to Thambisetty, you should see your doctor if memory problems become more frequent and start to make it harder to do everyday things. For example, if it becomes tougher to drive, shop, make change or carry on a chat with a friend, those would all be red flags.

MoreWhat Chelsea Clinton Wants Every Young Girl to Know

"Other signs of a more serious memory problem include repeating the same questions multiple times, getting lost in places you were previously familiar with or having trouble following directions,” he adds.

I remember years ago hearing a doctor say on a talk show, “Forgetting where you put your car keys is fine. Forgetting what the keys are for is troublesome.” I remind myself of this when I can’t remember a name someone just told me or where I put my purse that I just had an hour ago. I’ve also been told that part of the problem is all the multitasking we tend do. I am doing so many things at the same time, maybe I am not really concentrating on anything I am doing. If I just slowed down and attentively listened, I would probably remember things better.

Sometimes my 13-year-old son will ask me to study with him, and many of the concepts, especially social studies, math and science, seem completely foreign to me. I know I passed the seventh grade, but I still find myself wondering whether the curriculum radically changed and whether I ever really learned these concepts. Thank goodness for Google, which allows me to fake my knowledge base with a few keystrokes or I think my son would really question how I managed to earn a high school diploma.

Here’s the other fascinating part of how the mind works: I can’t remember how to do calculus, and yet, turn my SiriusXM dial to '80s on 8, and I can sing the lyrics to basically any song that comes on. I may not have heard it in 20 years, and I still remember every word. I remember movies I’ve seen, books I’ve read and the plot of TV shows I haven’t seen in a decade. Maybe it’s all this meaningless information that is crowding my brain making it impossible for more recent information to find a place to hang out and chill.

I am grateful of the many stories from my past that I can remember vividly, especially the ones from my childhood. I savor the memories of family dinners, squabbles with my brothers and everyday life being a kid. I can recall the details of many of these seemingly unimportant moments that occurred so many years ago as if they happened just yesterday. But ask me what did happen yesterday, and I may have to really rack my brain to tell you.

More: Why Am I Hungry All the Time?

For now, I choose to laugh at the little things I forget and to give myself an internal high-five when I actually do remember that I walked into the pantry for the baking soda. Or come to think of it, was it baking powder? Hmmm … let me stand here and minute and think.

How to improve your memory & work through memory loss

Thambisetty offers these tips to improve memory as you age:

  • Expose your brain to new interests, skills or situations.
  • Volunteer in your community, at school or at your place of worship.
  • Socialize with friends and family.
  • Take lessons or classes to learn new skills.
  • Use memory tools like to-do lists, calendars and reminder notes.
  • Put your wallet, keys and glasses in the same place each day.
  • Get plenty of sleep, eat a balanced diet and exercise regularly.
  • Don’t overindulge in alcohol, junk food or sugar.
  • Keep tabs on your emotional and mental health; if you feel depressed for over a week at a time, see a doctor.

Gwyneth Paltrow's New Meal Service Actually Sounds Kinda Good

When I think of frozen food, it usually calls to mind a pepperoni pizza or some ice cream. But Daily Harvest, a new meal kit service, is making frozen food that's actually nutritious and just got some impressive investors.

Gwyneth Paltrow and Serena Williams have both signed on to back Daily Harvest, which was founded by Rachel Drori. Unlike the frozen meals you're used to, Daily Harvest offers up good-for-you options like smoothies, soups, overnight oats and chia pudding — all plant-based, free of refined sugars and preservatives and made with organic produce.

More: Meal kits and tasty subscriptions for those of us who express love by feeding people

Surprisingly, the price point is pretty on par with your average "healthy" microwave meal and less than take-out, at just $6.99 to $7.99 a cup. Surprising given that Gwyneth Paltrow, queen of all things expensive and impractical, is involved!

So why did Paltrow of all people sign on for a frozen meal delivery kit when she's so often espousing the joys of cooking at home? "Frozen food gets a bad reputation but it's actually a very practical way to consume nutrient-dense foods," she says, pointing out that not everyone has access to the farm-fresh produce that chefs and lifestyle gurus alike are always touting. (Yeah, we all know that, just surprised you do, Gwyneth!)

More: 6 Tempting food services that will make your holidays so much easier

"Farm-frozen produce is picked at its nutritional peak, retains more nutrients and its more readily available to everyone," says Paltrow. That makes Daily Harvest a sound investment for the Goop founder and one that's aligned with her mission.

The food sounds pretty great too, or at least a lot more interesting than the smoothies I make at home (raise your hand if you somehow always seem to make your green smoothies brown).

More: A baking kit changed the way I make dessert

There's a mulberry and dragon fruit overnight oats bowl, a mango and golden milk chia parfait, a cold brew and almond smoothie, a zucchini and black garlic soup and tons of other options that are sure to keep your taste buds piqued.

For occasionally lazy cooks like me, the recent boom in health-focused meal delivery kits is a lifesaver. Here's hoping that the support from celebrity big wigs like Paltrow and Williams is enough to make this trend into the new norm.
