Marky Mark Is 46! 10 Things You Didn't Know About Mark Wahlberg

Seriously, can you believe Mark Wahlberg is 46 years old? It seems like only yesterday he was dancing around in his tighty whities and better known as the little brother of a New Kid on the Block than an award winning actor.

Marky Mark

Marky Mark

Nowadays, Wahlberg is viewed as a slick movie star — and he's pretty much all-but erased his Marky Mark persona. But we'll #neverforget.

In honor of Wahlberg's birthday, we did a little lite internet stalking to dig up some things you might not have known about him.

1. He's actually not a tighty whitey man

Marky Mark 2

Marky Mark 2

"I started wearin’ the longer shorts because… the regular brief underwear, they get sweaty and tend to get stretched out," Wahlberg explained in a clip from way back in the day that popped up on The Tonight Show in 2014. "You don’t want nothin’ fallin’ out the side."

Words to live by.

2. He can sing, too

Mark Wahlberg

Mark Wahlberg

Because of "Good Vibrations," we know that Wahlberg can rap his pants off, but he's not a bad singer either. Remember the 2001 movie Rock Star? He did actually sing in the movie, though he admits there was someone else helping him out with the crazy high notes. But even he doesn't know when it's his voice in the film or when it's his double.

"I studied with the vocal coach for six months, but we also had somebody else who sang the songs," he told hollywood.com when the movie came out. "But whenever we performed, we performed live, so — I’d have to pay attention to [the songs to know when I was singing]. If I could hit them all [the notes], it would only be my voice."

3. He had a (really bad) video game

Mark Wahlberg video game

Do you recall when the video game Marky Mark and the Funky Bunch: Make My Video was released in 1992? That's because it really sucked. Sorry, Marky Mark.

The premise was to put the player in the role of music video editor. Though video editing can actually be kinda fun and is something a lot of people are passionate about, this game just wasn't executed so well. Gotta love the '90s.

4. He's related to author of The Scarlet Letter

Mark Wahlberg 1

Wahlberg was born and bred in Boston and his mother, Alma Elaine, is a distant relative of Nathanial Hawthorne, who also penned the famous novel The House of Seven Gables.

Wonder what Roger Chillingworth would have thought about Wahlberg's Calvin Klein modeling days?

5. He was considered for the Jake Gyllenhaal role in Brokeback Mountain

Mark Wahlberg 2

Mark Wahlberg 2

"I met with Ang Lee on that movie, I read 15 pages of the script and got a little creeped out," Wahlberg said in an interview, via Uproxx. "It was very graphic, descriptive — the spitting on the hand, getting ready to do the thing. I told Ang Lee, ‘I like you, you’re a talented guy, if you want to talk about it more.’ Thankfully, he didn’t. I didn’t rush to see Brokeback, it’s just not my deal. Obviously, it was done in taste — look how it was received."

6. The Biebs is his No. 1 fan

Fear gif

Several years ago, rumors started circulating that Justin Bieber was obsessed with Wahlberg — and Bieber even wanted to remake the 1996 thriller Fear. Who else is glad that one never panned out?

7. He dated Reese Witherspoon

Mark Wahlberg 3

Mark Wahlberg 3

Speaking of Fear... Wahlberg totally sparked a good old-fashioned onset romance with his co-star, Witherspoon, and the two dated for a good portion of 1995.

8. He used to be all tatted up

Mark Wahlberg 4

Mark Wahlberg 4

Wahlberg has spent his fair share of time at the tattoo parlor. He previously had Sylvester the Cat with Tweety Bird ink, a Bob Marley tattoo with the words "One Love," a rosary around his neck and a crucifix with the words "In God I Trust" over his heart. However, he had them all removed — and even took his kids with him to witness the painful process so they'd be traumatized into not wanting tattoos of their own.

9. He's not a bad shot

Mark Wahlberg 4

To prepare for his character as a sniper in the film Shooter, the Oscar-nominated actor attended a long-range shooting institute and, on only his second day, was able to hit a target 10 football fields away. Not too shabby.

10. His family is in the burger biz

Wahlburgers gif

Wahlberg's brother Paul owns a Boston-based burger chain, and there's even an A&E reality show titled Wahlbergers that's been on the air since 2014. It follows the hilarious relationship between Mark, Paul and their other famous brother, Donnie Wahlberg, as Paul expands his burger empire.

Halle Berry Addresses Pregnancy Rumors Herself

It looks like fans shouldn't expect to see Halle Berry carrying around a new bundle of joy in the near future — unless that bundle comes with some Heinz 57 sauce.

Rumors that the star could be pregnant reached a fever pitch in the days following her Sunday night appearance at the Chrysalis Butterfly Ball in Los Angeles. The speculation was largely fueled by photos of Berry striking a pose that made it appear she was cradling her stomach.

When you're pregnant, especially early in the pregnancy, this is a classic pose. Not only is it something many pregnant women do instinctively, but it's also a great deterrent to quite literally being sized up by spectators wondering whether or not you are, in fact, with child.

In Berry's case, however, it would seem the pose was purely coincidental.

After her publicist confirmed to Refinery29 the rumors were false, Berry took to Instagram herself to post a cheeky response to all of the fuss over the state of her uterus. Along with a close-up shot in which Berry 's face features an "over it AF" expression, she coyly states, "Can a girl have some steak and fries??" A wink and an eyeroll emoji followed for good measure.

Halle Berry Food Baby

And amen to that, right? Berry, 50, should be able to stroll down a red carpet looking like the million bucks she did without people worrying about how taut her tummy is. If she was pregnant, it would be up to her to announce the news at a time that feels right to her.

More: Halle Berry Reveals Why Women Wear Lingerie and Nails It

Berry seems to be taking the fuss in stride, though, approaching it with humor.

Of course, she's probably too busy focusing on the two daughters she does have — 9-year-old Nahla Ariela Aubry, which ex-boyfriend Gabriel Aubry, and 3-year-old Maceo Robert Martinez, with ex-husband Olivier Martinez — to stress too much about commentary over her body.

Besides, we're betting that steak and fries was worth the impending scrutiny. Berry does seem to be sporting that special glow: the one that comes from eating a damn good meal. Food baby FTW!

Everyone's 'Evil' in Real Housewives of Orange County Season 12

If there's one thing you can always count on in this crazy world, it's that the Real Housewives of Orange County will deliver — the drama, that is. And to steal a page from Chris Harrison's quote book, it looks like RHOC Season 12 will be the most dramatic yet.

There are plenty of familiar faces in the just-released teaser trailer for the seemingly volatile season, including, of course, loud-and-proud longtime cast members Vicki Gunvalson and Tamra Judge. Also returning are Kelly Dodd, Meghan King Edmonds, Shannon Beador and Lydia McLaughlin, who is back after a hiatus from show.

More: Meghan King Edmonds Couldn't Resist the Allure of RHOC, so She's Coming Back

There's a newcomer to the crew, too, and we all know how well that usually goes over in the beginning. Peggy Sulahian, an Armenian-born mother of three, isn't just any newcomer, though... she is Bravo's 100th Housewife.

While drama during any Real Housewives season episode interaction is a safe bet, we've gotta admit this season looks particularly rife with moments that will undoubtedly spawn countless memes in the days to come.

RHOC Season 12 Teaser

RHOC Season 12 Teaser

Meghan, who originally had a hard time being accepted in the group for being a stepmom, now has a bio-baby too and is struggling like, well, a new mom.

More: It's Really Not Fair That RHOC's Briana Has to Brave So Many Health Issues

Shannon laments that she can't stop stress-eating, blaming the expansion of her waist line on her frustration with a fellow Housewife. "All I want to do is eat. This is stress, and that is Vicki Gunvalson," she insists.

It looks like Peggy and Kelly have some sort of beef to squash during the season, and you can naturally expect Kelly to be backing Vicki's play during any squabble she starts.

Things appear to get especially heated when someone — did we just spot Tamra's former RHOC frenemy Gretchen Rossi? — calls the sexuality of Tamra's husband, Eddie Judge, into question. In the clip, a visibly emotional Tamara says through tears, "She's so evil."

More: Against All Odds and Reason, Tamra Judge is Returning to RHOC

And as if all of those juicy shenanigans weren't enough of a gift from the reality TV gods, the lovely ladies will once again be traveling abroad. This time their destination is Iceland and, by the looks of it, things aren't just dramatic... they're downright dangerous.

Tune into The Real Housewives of Orange County premiere on July 10 at 9 p.m. on Bravo to see how your favorite high-octane drama mamas fare.

Reality Steve Admits His Spoiler for 2017 Winner of The Bachelorette Is All Wrong

If you're a self-professed member of Bachelor Nation, you no doubt know the name Reality Steve. The king of spoilers, the entertainment guru has been predicting winners of the Bachelor/Bachelorette for years with alarming accuracy... until now?

Before we go any further, suffice it to say this article contains spoilers. The fact that it centers around a man who reveals TV spoilers for a living should be a solid first clue. But in case there is any lingering doubt, what you are about to read will propose the potential winner of The Bachelorette and, by proxy, Rachel Lindsay's heart.

More: Rachel's Got Another Terrible Person Hiding in Plain Sight on The Bachelorette

If you do not want to have that secret knowledge rolling around in your brain whilst Rachel narrows down her suitors each week, avert your eyes. Got it? Good. Let's discuss.

Should you be the kind of person who considers spoilers light reading, like myself, you may have already stumbled across Reality Steve's original assertion that Peter Kraus will be revealed as the winner of this season of The Bachelorette.

Per the norm, he was pretty confident in this conclusion, declaring that Lindsay was "engaged to Peter" and this wasn't a "personal guess." And while Reality Steve has historically been spot-on with these bold predictions, you know how the saying goes — you can't win 'em all.

More: Things I Yelled at My TV While Watching The Bachelorette Premiere

In a rare move, Reality Steve was wrong and thus fessed up to such.

"I can honestly tell you that every season since I’ve been spoiling, I get told all the time from somewhere by someone “Oh, your spoiler is wrong” after I release the ending of the show. Just in the last few seasons, I was told specifically that Chris picked Becca after I posted the spoiler – didn’t happen. The next season was the Kaitlyn mess when I had her as single and was told two days before her snapchat fiasco she was engaged to Shawn. Then I was told Ben picked JoJo – he didn’t, was told JoJo picked Robby – she didn’t, then someone said last season Nick picked Raven – he didn’t. So it happens every single season like clockwork. I fully expect it, it’s usually nothing, and I’ve never wavered from my original post. And yet again, it’s happened this season after I posted the spoiler. However, after looking into it deeper, this time it turns out to be right. I’m sure all the Rachel/Peter fans are about to go into cardiac arrest, but I’m here to tell you…the spoiler I posted on May 17th was wrong. Rachel is engaged to Bryan Abasolo."

Talk about dropping a bomb! Bad news for Peter, great news for Bryan. Since Bryan has been my personal favorite so far (first impression rose-getters FTW), I can't say I'm too broken up about the development.
Plus, Peter is such a solid guy, he'll obviously fare well in the future. There's the high likelihood we'll see him again in Bachelor in Paradise, and possibly even as the next Bachelor.
As for Reality Steve, you've gotta give the guy props for being so forthcoming about his mistake. He doesn't make excuses or get defensive; he simply comes out with the hard-to-swallow fact that he got some bad information.

"I hate being wrong, especially about the ending, but like I said it’s not like I’m finding this out the day before the finale or something," he said of the new reveal. "It’s been corrected and you’ve got two months to watch the show in a different light now. It’s the new reality. Bryan can suck Rachel’s face off until the end of time."

Your Birth Control Pill Can Protect You Against Cancer for 30 Years

New research is changing the way women look at the potential risks and benefits that oral contraceptive birth control poses. Specifically, a recent study, led by Dr. Lisa Iversen of the Institute of Applied Health Sciences at Aberdeen and published in the American Journal of Obstetrics and Gynaecology, indicates that oral birth control pills can actually protect women against certain cancers for as long as 30 years.

More: We’re one step closer to getting birth control pills without a prescription

The study, which took place in the United Kingdom, looked at 46,000 women and ultimately determined that women who used oral contraceptives had significantly less risk of developing colorectal, ovarian and endometrial cancers. Comparatively, women that never took the pill had a higher risk for such cancers.

Previously, the thought has been that higher (either natural or synthetic) levels of the reproductive hormones progesterone and estrogen are linked to higher cancer risk. While this holds true for the relationship between oral contraceptives and an increased breast cancer risk, this latest U.K. study undermines the school of thinking that hormone levels affect all kinds of cancers in women.

Over 44 years, researchers studied the effects oral birth control pills had on women’s health. While a greater risk of developing both breast and cervical cancers was identified during this research, it was determined that risk decreased within five years of stopping the pill.

More: Can Your Birth Control Pill Help You Fight Iron Deficiency?

About 16 percent of women ages 15 to 44 currently resort to the pill as a form of birth control, according to the Centers for Disease Control and Prevention. Among teenagers, condoms are currently the most common contraceptive method.

Bach Nation's Ryan Sutter Recalls in Scary Detail Trista Sutter's Seizure

One of Bachelor Nation's most solid couples is weathering a serious storm right now, but hopefully they're through the worst of it. While vacationing in Croatia with their children, former Bachelorette star Trista Sutter suffered a seizure in front of her family. The health scare was a serious moment for the entire Sutter family. Now, Ryan Sutter has spoken up about Trista's seizure and just how this event helped him to love, appreciate and feel compelled to care for his wife in a whole new way.

More: Reality Steve Admits His Spoiler for 2017 Winner of The Bachelorette Is All Wrong

Taking to his Instagram on Monday, Sutter finally found the words to describe what it was like in that moment to watch his wife go through an unexpected and traumatic event — in front of their children, no less. Using a photo of Trista, who is taking a photo through her own camera, Sutter was able to recount how this photo shows the woman he loves, but how that woman was suddenly transformed in an instant, leaving him unprepared.

"I've had this picture to post for a few days. I just haven't been sure what to say? Like my mind, the photo has sat as a 'draft.' In limbo. A bit confused," Sutter wrote. "It was taken one day after my wife, unexpectedly and without a definitive cause, seized violently in front of her family on a shuttle bus full of strangers. In almost 17 years as a firefighter, my experience has trained me to address the immediate emergency. However, little in my 42 years of life prepared me for the confusion and contemplation that remains after the tide of immediacy has settled."

Ryan Sutter Trista Update Instagram

Ryan Sutter Trista Update Instagram

Even though Sutter recalls being unprepared and possibly a bit scared at the events that happened in rapid succession with Trista's health, he wrote that he couldn't help but be incredibly grateful for the love he and his family has received in the wake of this scary moment. "What has helped is the outpouring of kindness received from our friends, family and even those that we've never personally met. Without a doubt, you have been instrumental in the healing process and a humbling source of strength for @tristasutter and I. So, with that message, I post this simple picture. It's my wife — at her best — capturing life as she always has, though now through a more meaningful lens..."

Sutter's words are so touching and raw, it's tough not to feel a swell of compassion for him. Details of this incident are undoubtedly troubling, but to know that the Sutter family has only come out the other side stronger than before should come as a relief for Bach Nation and fans of this everlasting couple.

Trista Sutter Seizure Instagram

Trista opened up shortly after the incident on her own Instagram, speaking about the very harrowing process of the seizure as well as the ways in which it affected her views on her own mortality. The entire caption on Trista's photo while in a Croatian hospital speaks volumes and I encourage you to read it in its entirety. Perhaps the most poignant excerpt from Trista's post is this: "I've never been perfect and I never will be, but from here on out, I vow to try my best to live this life to the fullest. To embrace gratitude and the lessons I wrote about over 3 years ago with a newly acquired perspective. To stress less. To love more. To listen. Be kind. Spread joy." Beautiful.

Here's to hoping the Sutter family, and Trista in particular, are healing properly and are feeling stronger than ever.

8-Year-Old Girl Disqualified From Soccer Game for Looking 'Like a Boy'

$

Mili Hernandez loves short hair. The 8-year-old girl also loves soccer. Mili's two loves, it seems, should be able to coexist, right?

"When my hair starts to grow I put it short because I've always had short hair. I didn't like my hair long," Mili explained. Fair enough, kid. We feel you.
But that simple explanation for her short hair was apparently not enough for the organizers of the Springfield Soccer Club girls' tournament, who disqualified Mili — and her entire team — from the event. All because organizers insisted she was a boy. How can this shocking —and false —discrimination happen in 2017?

Never mind that Mili's father, Gerardo Hernandez, quickly showed his daughter's insurance card to the tournament organizers. They refused to acknowledge the clear sex stated on her card: female. Mili and her teammates were out. Period.

Gerardo Hernandez told local news that Mili "was in shock... She was crying after they told us... They made her cry."

Soccer is everything to Mili. She plays on the 11-year-old roster (because at age 8, she's that good) for Omaha's Azzuri Cachorros girls' club team. In fact, this weekend Mili was instrumental in leading her team to the finals of this very tournament.

But Springfield Soccer Club insisted — despite hard evidence — that Mili was a boy, and that was that.

Mili's brother, Cruz Hernandez, told local news, "They didn't want to listen. They said the president made his decision and there wasn't any changing that."

Mili was devastated, but wasn't letting it keep her down, saying, "There's other tournaments that I can play."

More: Girls in football? Meet the She Belongs campaign

Springfield Soccer Club organizers declined requests for interviews and directed news outlets to contact their attorneys. They told Mili and her family if they'd like to challenge the disqualification (uh, yeah, they might — hell, we're ready to!) that they can take it to the Nebraska State Soccer Association.

We hope this story goes big and the Springfield Soccer Club is chastised for their lousy behavior. In the meantime? Mili's gained some seriously impressive allies. She has been invited by soccer superstar Mia Hamm to attend Hamm's prestigious soccer academy (gooooooal!!!) and fellow soccer star Abby Wambach posted an Instagram message to Mili expressing her support and saying, "Let's meet soon sister."

Some parenting hacks are so beautifully simple, we wonder why the heck we didn't come up with them ourselves. (Probably because we were lurching around like extras from The Walking Dead we were so sleep-deprived.)

More: The nightmare that is teething

So let's talk teething hacks, shall we? There's not much worse than the helplessness of watching your baby work through awful teething pain. Those are bad, bad days, as most parents can attest.

One Columbus, Ohio, mom gave all of us parents a big ol' lightbulb moment when she shared a video on Facebook of her son chowing down on a "milksicle" — an ice pop made from breast milk. Tasia Blackwell said she started making them on a whim and found they help hugely "with his teething pain and [help] fill up his tummy."

Genius! Want to guess if her video went viral? If you said yes, you win. Her video has gotten over — get this — 19 million views since she posted it on June 2. Yes. 19 million.

If you've ever looked at some life advice from Gwyneth Paltrow's lifestyle site Goop and rolled your eyes (steam-cleaning your vagina, anyone?), you're not alone. Recently, Paltrow admitted to Jimmy Kimmel she doesn't know what Goop's advice is about half the time, just like the rest of the world.

More: We Can’t Believe We Have to Say This, but Don’t Put a Wasp Nest in Your Vagina

Paltrow appeared on Jimmy Kimmel Live on Monday, where he had some of the same questions we've had about some of Goop's more out-there ideas. Here's the big news that was revealed: Not only does Paltrow not read everything on Goop, but she thinks some of that advice is super-extra.

One of the first things Kimmel asked about was "Earthing," or the practice of walking barefoot to cure insomnia because apparently if you can't sleep, it's because you've lost your physical connection with the earth or something? I was barefoot at a beach bar just the other day, and all that got me was a tetanus shot after I stepped on some broken glass. So, there's that.

More: Gwyneth Paltrow Discloses the Hottest Health Trend of 2017 — Sleep

To Kimmel's question, Paltrow replied that she "actually doesn't know that much about Earthing," adding that, "[t]hey say that we've lost touch with being barefoot in the Earth and there's some type of electromagnetic thing that we're missing, so it's good to take your shoes off and walk in the grass." She then laughed and finally admitted, "I don't know what the fuck we talk about."

There it is, ladies and gentleman. Straight from the mouth of the Goop queen herself.

When Kimmel asked her, "So sometimes there are things that you go, 'Oh, that seems a bit much?'" she responded, "Oh yeah, for sure! Yeah."

George and Amal Clooney have finally welcomed one of the most anticipated sets of celebrity babies of all time (after Beyoncé & Jay Z's twins, of course).

More: Amal Gave George Clooney a Crazy-Realistic Birthday Cake

The Hollywood Reporter confirmed that George and Amal Clooney welcomed twins Ella and Alexander Clooney on Tuesday morning. The statement the Clooney's rep released about the joyous day is as perfect as we imagine the babies are. "Ella, Alexander and Amal are all healthy, happy and doing fine," a rep for the couple told THR. "George is sedated and should recover in a few days."

The Clooneys were married in a star-studded ceremony in Italy back in September 2014. Following rumors of pregnancy, they confirmed in February that they were expecting twins.

George and Amal Clooney had a busy week leading up to the birth of their double-bundle of joy. According to People magazine, they got a visit from former President Barack Obama, who probably had tons of top parenting advice to offer. You know, things like:

Other than that, though, the Clooneys have had a pretty quiet few months out of the spotlight while they were probably busy at home preparing for the arrival of two babies at once. That's no easy job, but if there's anyone up for it, it's those two.

The Simple Change That Could Increase Your Home's Value by $5,000

If you're looking for a quick way to boost the value of your home before selling (one that doesn't, say, involve a full kitchen reno), you're in luck. It turns out a simple coat of paint can add more than $5,000 to your home's selling price, and no (thank God), we're not talking beige.

More: 20 Home Decor Trends That Will Be Huge in 2017

Cool tones are the way to go, especially blue-gray, slate and cerulean according to a Zillow analysis of 32,000 home photos, which found that light blue bathrooms increased the value of a home around $5,440, while white and beige bathroom were worth $4,035 less.

Blue bedrooms could increase a home's value by $1,856, and dining rooms in shades of blue ranging from dark navy to slate blue added $2,000 to the home's price tag.

One place to be cautious? The kitchen. While light blue and blue-gray kitchens currently come with a price increase of $1,800, just last year yellow kitchens were all the rage (but they now actually reduce a home's value by $820).

It's pretty crazy to think that simply painting your bathroom can result in such a huge jump in price, especially since if you're painting it yourself, there's no way the cost of materials and time will even approach $5,000.

That's a lot cheaper than putting in new floors or other major home improvements, and if you paint all of the recommended rooms, you could be seeing a significant jump in your home's selling price — which means you'll have some extra cash to use in your new digs.

The Daily Show's Michelle Wolf Called Megyn Kelly's NBC Debut 'Disgusting'

Megyn Kelly may consider her new gig at NBC a chance to rebrand herself after 12 years at Fox News, arguably one of the most divisive news networks on the air. During her Sunday Night debut, she addressed the divisive nature of cable news in the U.S., even asking her viewers: "Can't we all just get along?"

Not everyone is falling for it, like The Daily Show correspondent Michelle Wolf, who called Kelly out hard during Monday night's episode. Wolf laid into Kelly, calling her premiere on NBC "disgusting" and saying she was just “trying to manipulate the American public."

"I’m sorry, now we’re all supposed to be friends?" Wolf said sarcastically. "Now that you’re at NBC, you’re acting all peaceful, like some sort of Mahatma Blondie?"

Wolf then showed a compilation of clips of some of the brutal and harsh things Kelly said during her Fox years before laying into her again. "Five months ago, she was part of the problem," Wolf said. "Actually, she was the queen of the problem… Sorry, Megyn, you’re not the new Barbara Walters. You’re that Sprint/Verizon guy who just follows the money."

Wolf definitely has a point. Fox News is not known for being friendly, inclusive or accurate, and Kelly's kumbaya image on NBC has been a marked departure from her persona at Fox. But can she really be blamed for following the money? How many of us do jobs that aren't perfect because we want to make a better buck? On that note, who even has a job that's perfect?

Kelly probably deserves the criticism she's getting for suddenly trying to sneakily rehab her image. But for getting paid? That's just something we're all trying to do.

Knowing When to Draw the Line on Fertility Treatment

The lowest point of my life happened, somewhat fittingly, on a toilet. It was about a week into my first miscarriage, and I’d finally peeled myself off the couch (where I’d been curled up with cramps for days) to take my dog on a short walk and get some fresh air. Upon coming back inside, I headed to the bathroom to pee, but when I sat down, I felt a sharp sting on my inner thigh. There it was: a large bee. It had snuck inside my pants during the brief time I’d been outside and was now taking up residence in my underwear.

Later at the urgent care (thanks to a minor allergic reaction), I had the distinct feeling that I couldn’t sink any lower than I felt in that moment. The low point had begun about a week earlier, when I’d learned that my baby’s heartbeat had stopped at nine weeks; since then, I’d been in a lot of pain processing the bad news and trying to pass the pregnancy naturally with no luck. (I ended up having a dilation and curettage procedure.) It had been my first pregnancy, achieved via IVF after four other failed fertility treatments. My husband and I were heartbroken — we’d already named her Faith and started planning for the future.

MoreMy Male Partner Won't Agree to a Sperm Analysis — Now What?

Losing the pregnancy was absolutely devastating, but almost worse was the immense feeling of dread at having to get back on the seemingly endless hamster wheel of trying to conceive against all odds. During the two years that my husband and I had been trying, I’d gone down a rabbit hole of sorts, where my infertility had completely taken over my life. First it had been trying to get a diagnosis and figure out why I couldn’t get pregnant. Once I finally learned that I had diminished ovarian reserve, then the obsession became about how to surmount that obstacle and somehow trick my body into producing viable eggs.

As my husband and I started an ongoing series of fertility treatments, I became utterly consumed — trying everything from acupuncture to meditation to a 40-pill-a-day supplemental regimen. I also made a bevy of lifestyle changes, such as quitting alcohol and Diet Coke, removing all endocrine disruptors from our household, getting regular vitamin D injections and going on a dedicated fertility diet. As a compulsive researcher (it’s the journalist in me), I spent almost all of my free time lurking on message boards and devouring the latest medical developments.

The deepest parts of the rabbit hole, though, were the intense feelings of isolation, sadness and being in limbo that intensified with each passing day. Going to Resolve meetings and seeing a therapist helped, but it became increasingly difficult to think about anything but my inability to get pregnant.

For all of these reasons, I was perilously close to my point of “enough” after the miscarriage, but my husband felt strongly that we should soldier on and try another IVF cycle. (Unlike me, he’d always been optimistic about our prospects and felt that there was still hope.) I didn’t want to give up either, but felt mentally, physically and emotionally exhausted. However, it didn’t feel right to stop there since we’d finally had some degree of success, so I managed to talk myself into doing a third IVF cycle just a few months later. My one caveat? That if it didn’t work, I was done.

Miraculously, that third cycle did work, and I ended up giving birth to twins. (I initially got pregnant with triplets, but lost one of the babies in the first trimester.) In retrospect, every step of the journey was so worth it, and knowing what I know now, I would do it all over again 100 times. But how would things have been different had that final cycle not worked? Would I have summoned the strength to keep going, or would I have honored my desire to stop fertility treatments and get off that proverbial hamster wheel?

That’s the question I ask myself now as an advocate and friend to women still navigating infertility. At what point does the pain of infertility outweigh the pursuit of motherhood? The answer is different for everyone. For me, three years and six treatments felt like the limit, while I’m amazed by women like my friend Melinda* (who withstood 18 fertility treatments in order to have her two children) and actress Jaime King (who underwent 26 IUI treatments and five IVF cycles before conceiving naturally).

MoreTrying to Conceive? The Important Test Your Gynecologist Isn't Telling You About

LA-based entrepreneur Jen Dede Kelly and her husband recently decided to turn to adoption after seven long years of trying — spanning 10 IUIs and four IVF cycles. Though the couple has neared this crossroads before (“usually after a big treatment that left us feeling devastated, drained and hopeless,” says Kelly), they experienced a more significant mental shift last year after several canceled IVF cycles.

“While we were grateful that our doctor always made an ethical decision about what was worth putting my body through, it was extremely tough on me,” shares Kelly.

When her husband landed a temporary acting job in Chicago, the couple jumped at the chance to take a much-needed reprieve, but “what was supposed to be a few months turned into almost a year of giving our minds and my body a break,” says Kelly. “There was a lot of grief along with healing and a feeling in my gut that perhaps the treatments were doing more harm than good. I was at my breaking point.”

For Sarah Chamberlin, who writes the blog Infertility Honesty, it took four years, $77,000 and a host of treatments and interventions before she and her husband made the painful decision to live “child-free, but not by choice.” Having transferred 24 embryos unsuccessfully, Chamberlin felt she simply couldn’t continue. “When you have to work so hard to make a child, your love isn’t going into that child initially; it’s going into the creation of those embryos,” she explains. “It was as if I’d lost my children [when the treatments didn’t work]. We didn’t have the financial resources to pursue parenthood any further — and we were depleted on every level.”

To avoid hitting that point of total depletion, fertility coach Rosanne Austin believes it’s important to have a “finish line” in mind — whatever that means to you. Her motto? “A finish line isn’t failure, it’s freedom.” She suggests keeping the following three criteria in mind when deciding whether to halt treatment.

Money. It’s hard to think of many other situations in which one could possibly spend thousands of dollars and not receive any return for their investment (other than heartache). Though there are programs to offset the cost of fertility treatment, it’s helpful to have a ceiling in mind for what you’re ultimately willing to spend and stick to it.

Time. Austin suggests taking your age into account and being realistic about exactly how much time you’ll devote to pursuing fertility treatments before exploring other options for achieving parenthood. As she puts it, “fertility treatment limbo should just be a stop on your journey, not the destination.”

Emotional bandwidth. According to literature from Resolve, studies have shown that the psychological stress of infertility is on par with that of having cancer, so it’s vital not to discount the heavy emotional burden that can accompany infertility. For Chamberlin, it was about reclaiming her life. “I felt a certain numbness in everything I did, which was preventing me from enjoying even the most basic things,” she says. “Baby-making debacle aside, we knew we had good things in our lives — somewhere — and we wanted to get back to enjoying them.”

MoreHow "Rainbow Mamas" Are Helping to Spread Much-Needed Miscarriage Awareness

Some of the key questions that helped Kelly were: "How much more do I want to put my body through? Is this harming me more than helping? What does life look like childless? What alternative family-building options are we open to? We then tried to detach emotionally and take the pressure off feeling like we had to make any decisions — it helped us to think of it as an adventure of exploration. It shifted our perspective from scary to liberating.”

When you’re steeped in the thick of fertility treatments, it’s easy for the pursuit of pregnancy to become almost like an addiction. (It definitely did for me.) Though it can be a slippery slope deciding when enough is enough, it can also be empowering to know and honor your limits — even when the desired outcome still hasn’t materialized.

“It had been especially hard because we were always waiting for our doctor to say, ‘It’s time to go another direction,’” says Kelly, “but in our case, we needed to make that call ourselves. We’ve started to realize there is an end of the road, but that doesn’t mean it has to be the end of our dream to create our family.”

Popeyes is Now Selling Cookie-Crusted Chicken, & We're Here for It

Is there anything better than dishes that combine sweet with savory? Salted caramel, teriyaki beef and now... cookie-crusted chicken?

Sure, Popeyes' new cookie-crusted chicken tenders, which are breaded in a crispy coating of shortbread cookies, sound kind of out there. But if you really think about it, are they any different than the myriad other sweet and savory chicken options? Or more bizarre than other fast food creations, like the Taco Bell Crunchwrap Cheetos Sliders? Probs not.

Cookies are perhaps a more overt nod to dessert, but no one seems to bat an eyelash at drizzling fried chicken and waffles in syrup, dunking hot chicken in honey or coating fried chicken nuggets in a sweet orange sauce.

But just because we aren't phased by this culinary mashup doesn't mean that the rest of the world isn't freaking out (even though the tenders actually look totally normal — you'd never even be able to guess they were coated in cookies instead of breadcrumbs).

Johnny Depp's New Japanese Beer Commercial Is Here & Confusing

This commercial may look familiar, because we've seen this storyline before. On the classic and tragically canceled-too-soon TV show, Don't Trust the B in Apartment 23. In one episode, James Van Der Beek, who plays himself, gets a little strapped for cash and films a Vietnamese energy drink commercial, like you do. It's basically just a completely unrelated sequence of scenes culminating in his standing in outer space and yelling, "Dawson is the moon!" It tragically cannot be found anywhere on YouTube, but you can see it here.

While Depp doesn't speak in his commercial (unfortunately), it's just as delightfully random as the fictional commercial from Don't Trust The B. He rocks out on his guitar with Japanese musician/actor Masaharu Fukuyama and their only audience member is some bird of prey (a falcon? A hawk? I don't know), and there's a helicopter for literally no reason, and then everyone shares a beer. This is storytelling at its best.

7 Major Misconceptions About Working From Home

By Liv McConnell

As both technology and companies that value flexibility continue to grow, it’s not a stretch to say many of us will get to know that oft-misunderstood beast — the job that “lets” you work from home — on a pretty intimate basis at some point in our careers.

And misunderstood it is. For those who haven’t personally experienced telecommuting for themselves, the sound of it is pretty glamorous (in the I-can-wear-PJs-all-day sort of glamour). Admittedly, there are perks: the aforementioned PJs, no more obnoxious commute, getting to work from the comfort of your couch or bed. But unlike the idealized vision many of us cubicle workers have cooked up, working from home is still working — and sometimes, it’s working harder than you would be at an office.

Here’s a little reality check for anyone who still believes working from home is tantamount to working basically not all.

1. Working from home essentially means working around the clock

Working ‘round the clock
Image: Giphy

This is because without a set start and stop to your work day, it’s easy to lose track of time and structure (10 a.m.? 10 p.m.? What’s the difference!). You’ll likely try to keep “regular” working hours, at least in the beginning, but actually enforcing them for yourself is another matter.

2. People will ask favors of you and expect you to help them now-right-now

Veruca Salts
Image: Giphy

As previously established, most office workers operate with a bias, conscious or not, toward their at-home peers. No matter how many times you explain otherwise, on some level, people are always going to assume you have all the time in the world — and that you should be using it to help those of us who “really” work. Talk about obnoxious...

3. The perceived luxury of getting to wear PJs during the day, all day, comes with an expiration date.

I Need More Information
Image: Giphy

There will be days where you wish so dang bad you had a reason to shower and wear real clothes. No, seriously. That happens.

4. Your human interaction during the week becomes severely limited

Golum
Image: Giphy

In the beginning, you’ll likely be rejoicing the fact you no longer have to endure meaningless chitchat at the water fountain. But for anyone whose work transpires mainly online, having your main spoken conversation of the day be a phoned-in takeout order is liable to eventually feel pretty weird. Probably, you’ll try taking your work to a nearby coffee shop to shake things up and at least be able to sit near some other human beings. In the end, though, those coffee machines are just way too loud, and the barista's taste in music stinks.

5. And when you do go to company events — no one believes that you actually work with them

Lindsay Lohan in
Image: Giphy

This can feel a wee bit isolating, especially if your in-office co-workers actually enjoy a healthy, collaborative work culture. (Another related thing: “Happy hour” is not in your vocabulary.)

6. “What’s a sick day?” you’ll stuffily whisper into the void

Amy Poehler in
Image: Giphy

When your day primarily consists of working on a laptop from your couch or bed anyway, “taking a sick day” isn’t liable to feel within the realm of reason. It’d feel weird not to work.

7. Distractions will lose their luster

Distractions will lose their luster.
Image: Giphy

After a day or two of subpar focus with the TV on “in the background,” it’s probably getting shut off for good. Many of us use Netflix or reading on the couch as a means to decompress after a full day at the office. But if you’re already spending the day on your couch, staying on it to veg in the little bit of time you aren’t working is hardly going to feel relaxing. More likely, you’d develop some pretty raging cabin fever.

8. But that doesn’t mean you can ignore them — especially if you’re a parent who works at home

Spanky from the
Image: Giphy

How does working from home while your kid is also home sick or on a break from school sound? Less than ideal? Yeah, that’s what we thought.

To be fair, there really are many wonderful advantages to working from home, and for a lot of people, it’s an ideal situation. But rest assured — it’s an ideal work situation. Because working from home is definitely, without a doubt, working.
