Stop wasting your time on parenting books

New parents don’t have to shun all parenting books before having their first child, but take it from all of the sleep-deprived out there: Whatever you think you’ve learned about babies by reading parenting books will not be available for recall anywhere in your brain once your newborn finally arrives.

Take it from all of the sleep-deprived out there: Whatever you think you’ve learned about babies by reading parenting books will not be available for recall anywhere in your brain once your newborn finally arrives.

How to prep before your first kid

You may feel like you need to cram, but this isn’t an exam. There are no footnotes to memorize. Your baby will test you, but not in any way that you could ever have imagined. Any parent will tell you, enjoy the time before your firstborn makes her debut to rest, read a novel, sleep in and eat out.

Jenelle C., mom to three boys, says, “I wish I had known that no matter what you may read beforehand, you will have to figure out what works for you and your baby. What worked for your mom, your friends or the experts may need to be modified or not used at all.”

The simple truth is this: That first month out of utero, your baby will eat, sleep and poop, and you’ll be lucky if you have time to do the same.

Sleeping like a baby

Some people misuse the phrase “sleeping like a baby.” There is no consistency, soundness or established length to a newborn’s sleep those first few weeks. And that child will not care that you lovingly put together a cozy crib or co-sleeper for her slumber. “None of us would have slept if it weren’t for the swing,” says new mom, Mary S. Other parents swear by a bouncer. Either way, having an extra baby-holding apparatus or two in the house will give you options to help get that child to snooze. Be prepared to be flexible because sometimes you just have to get creative so everyone can get a little shut-eye.

10 Newborn tips for new moms>>

Eating like a champ

If you plan to breastfeed, nursing tanks will make life easier since you’ll be feeding on demand and round the clock. Find a nursing pillow that you’re comfortable with and, once you’ve determined that your baby has established a good latch and will be nursing exclusively for as long as you’re able, invest in a breast pump so you can begin to regain some control over your life.

Bottle-feeding mamas will become experts on different bottle and formula brands within no time, but it may take some time to establish which combo works best for your baby. Be patient and have a few samples on hand to test out for your little one.

No matter what way you’ve chosen to feed your child, spit-up will be as ever-present as poop, so stockpile burp cloths and bibs. You’ll be doing laundry a lot anyway, and tissues just aren’t going to cut it for this kind of baby output.

Bottle feeding essentials>>

Pooping like a pro

There’s one thing your baby doesn’t have to learn how to do and that’s poop. There will be a lot of it — and pee too. You’ll soon perfect your own amazing diaper-changing technique that will have you thinking you should write a book about your mad skills. But here’s the thing to know about poop: It will not necessarily stay in the diaper. So it’s important to stock up on basic baby wear: onesies, sleeper gowns , swaddles and sheets. Oh, and of course, plenty of diapers.

New mom’s guide to baby care products>>

Things mom might need

Having a newborn isn’t always about what the baby needs but what mama needs to help her get through the sleepless nights and unexpected challenges. While new mother Rachel K. couldn’t live without things like easy-access nightgowns for nursing, all-natural hand lotion, comfy and thin nursing bras for sleeping, high-waisted granny panties and her favorite restaurants on speed dial, one of the things she endorses most is her Kindle Fire. “It’s small and lightweight and it gives me something to do while I nurse him. I only need one hand and I can see it in the dark. I either read or play Sudoku.”

How can I learn about parenting?

No one expects any first-time parent to go into the job completely uninformed and clueless. But trying to memorize the massive collection of parenting books that are out there is daunting and impossible. Carefully choose a parenting class and breastfeeding class to get you prepped for the basics of childcare and feeding. How is sitting in a seminar room with other expectant parents any different from reading a book? Hands-on learning and interaction with others is more likely to stick in your brain than a bunch of text from the umpteenth book you attempted to read before falling asleep.

Honeymoons have evolved from simple beach vacations, and these days, couples can choose a trip as unique as they are.

Next stop: the newlyweds

In this series, we break down the best honeymoon destinations, one at a time, to help you narrow down the dizzying array of options so you can choose the one that reflects your interests, budget and style. Up today? Thailand.

Destination

Chiang Mai, Thailand. Fly into Chiang Mai International Airport and most flights connect through Bangkok .

You'll love it if...

You seek adventure and culture.

About Chiang Mai

Chiang Mai, known by locals as “the rose of the north” for its beauty and charm, has become a popular honeymoon destination for travelers seeking an unforgettable combination of adventure, culture and relaxation.

With its spectacular scenery, endless cultural pursuits and some of the world’s best five-star resorts, Chiang Mai offers something for everyone. Although flights to Thailand can be a bit pricey, once there you can pamper yourself with fine dining, luxury accommodations and extravagant spa treatments for less than many other exotic honeymoon destinations.

How to see Chiang Mai

The best way to see the city is by private tour. We checked in with Tim Klein from Paul Klein Travel, a Virtuoso Member Agency specializing in luxury, who recommends booking tours through Trails of Indochina.

A reservation includes a private driver, an air-conditioned vehicle as well as a private English-speaking tour guide. The guides are reliable, knowledgeable and extremely professional. Expect itineraries to be inspirational, yet tightly organized and managed. Costs are reasonable and depending on what you are looking to do, range from about $125 to $275 for an entire day .

What to do in Chiang Mai

For the culture-seekers:

war_phrathat

  • A visit to Wat Phrathat, the city’s famous golden-gilded temple, is a must-see.
  • Taking a cooking class with your loved one and learning the secrets of Northern-Thai cooking is also not to be missed. Mastering the art of cooking each other’s favorite Thai dishes is the ultimate souvenir that you will enjoy for years to come.
  • Check out Night Bazaar or weekend Walking Markets. Visitors will revel in a shopper’s paradise where streets are lined with vendors selling everything from novelty items to handmade Thai silk. Bargaining is customary here, so be sure to give it a try!
For a spiritual experience:
  • Tim Klein recommends that travelers looking for a spiritual experience take part in the giving of the Alms procession for the monks, which occurs daily at the crack of dawn.

For thrill-seekers:

  • Trek through the Thai jungles atop an elephant’s back .
  • If you’re looking for something even more adventurous, climb into a tiger’s cage at Mae Rim’s Tiger Kingdom and play with baby or full-grown cats.
When it comes to relaxation:
  • Once you’ve experienced what this spectacular city has to offer, head indoors to one of Chiang Mai’s many extravagant resorts for some R&R .

Where to stay

Chiang Mai’s hotels are famous for the over-the-top luxury that they afford newlyweds. Tim Klein recommends The Four Seasons Resort, Chiang Mai as well as the Mandarin Oriental, Dhara Dhevi to his clients looking for extreme luxury.

Nicola Chilton, Senior Director of Public Relations for The Four Seasons, Asia-Pacific, informed us about the abundance of romantic activities tailored specifically to honeymooners, like a private candlelit dinner overlooking the rice fields or the many couples treatments offered by its world-class spa, like signature Thai massages or Chakra Blessing treatments.

For couples looking for luxury at a lower price point, Tim Klein suggests The Chedi, Chiang Mai, which is conveniently located in the heart of the city on the banks of the renowned Mae Ping River, just blocks away from the Night Bazaar. This contemporary hotel provides the perfect escape from the bustling metropolis. What The Chedi lacks in scenery that the Mandarin and Four Seasons offer in the countryside, it makes up for with elegant guest rooms and its central locale. The Chedi also has one of the best restaurants in the city, serving up gourmet Indian and Korean cuisine.

And speaking of food...

Where to eat and drink

"Believe it or not, some of the best food in the city can be found at food vendors on the street."

Believe it or not, some of the best food in the city can be found at food vendors on the street. These carts may not be five star, but they serve up some of the nation’s finest cuisine. Sampling street food is a must-have experience while in Thailand. It’s part of the local culture and it’s dirt cheap, so why not give it a try?

The fried noodle and soup noodles are fantastic, as are the fresh-cut, tropical fruits like jackfruit and durian. And don’t forget to grab a plastic bag full of freshly-squeezed passion fruit juice.

Restaurants

  • For romantic dinner reservations, if you’re looking for elegant Thai cuisine, check out La Grand Lanna at the Mandarin Oriental.
  • For magnificent views overlooking the lake, visit Palaad Tawanron.
  • For local and sustainable vegetarian fare, chow down at Pun Pun.
  • For a taste of authentic northern Thai praised by famed foodie Anthony Bourdain, visit Aroon Rai.

Nightlife

  • If you’re looking to keep the night going, check out live music at North Gate Jazz Co-Op.
  • If you’re in the mood to dance, be sure to check out Monkey Club or Mandalay.

When to go

The best time to visit Chiang Mai is during its dry season, which is roughly November through May. Nicola Chilton from The Four Seasons highly recommends visiting Chiang Mai during the Yi Peng Lantern Festival , which is an enchanting experience where thousands of lanterns are floated into the evening sky.

What to watch out for

Thailand is infamous for its sex shows, which despite their popularity, are actually illegal. Many couples fall into the trap of wanting to experience a seemingly innocent adventure and end up having to bribe cops out of an arrest. You do not want your honeymoon to end with a trip to a Thai prison.

Visitors should also be wary of vendors selling designer items. No matter what these crafty salesmen say, these goods are almost always counterfeit.

The top 5 green health clubs in the country

Looking to reduce your dress size and your carbon footprint? If so, you’re not alone. Check out what these green health clubs are doing to improve the health of both their members and the environment.
The Green Microgym

America's greenest health clubs

Looking to reduce your dress size and your carbon footprint? If so, you’re not alone. Check out what these green health clubs are doing to improve the health of both their members and the environment.

Health and fitness clubs across the country are embracing environmentally friendly “green” practices, from refurbished treadmills to spin bikes that generate electricity to water conservation programs. According to the International Health, Racquet and Sportsclub Association , three-quarters of gym operators see “going green” as a business priority — and an opportunity to enhance corporate social responsibility, improve efficiency, help the environment and boost the bottom line.

However, some facilities have taken the green gym philosophy one step further by adopting innovative, out-of-the-box initiatives to create a healthy and sustainable environment for their members. Here are our top picks for the nation’s “greenest” health clubs.

1

The Green Microgym

Thanks to exterior solar panels, plus stationary bicycles and elliptical machines that convert human energy into electricity, this Oregon-based club generates nearly 40 percent of its own power. In addition, the Green Microgym features recycled rubber flooring, treadmills that use 30 percent less electricity than regular models and power off when not in use, and member-controlled lights, televisions and fans that are turned on only when needed.

2

Longfellow Clubs

Longfellow Clubs

This Boston-area club has pioneered a number of groundbreaking sustainability initiatives. In addition to comprehensive recycling, water conservation and energy-efficient lighting programs, they installed New England’s largest solar hot water system and a state-of-the-art salt-water purification system for the club’s swimming pools that eliminates the need for highly toxic chlorine. The club also invested in a co-generation unit that heats the swimming pool and showers with the heat generated by burning natural gas and creating electricity at their Natick location.

3

Green Fitness Studio

Green Fitness Studio

A gym with a living roof? Welcome to Green Fitness Studio in the Bushwick section of Brooklyn, where a 2,000-square-foot, sod-covered area allows the club to conserve rain water, reduce storm runoff, detoxify pollution and use less energy to cool the building. Other unique green features include an energy-saving mirrored glass atrium that retains hot or cool air, refurbished cardio equipment that would have otherwise been thrown away and infrared saunas that are nearly 50 percent more energy efficient than hot rock or steam saunas.

4

Equinox

Equinox

This luxury fitness chain has ramped up its green efforts, making eco-friendly changes at club locations nationwide, including water filtration and water-saving technologies, LED lighting with local and dimming controls, and zoned and programmable temperature controls. Also, construction of all new facilities will incorporate textile, paint and other finish materials that contain low or no VOCs , as well as recycled and rapidly renewable materials like bamboo, cork or rubber.

5

Go Green Fitness

Go Green Fitness

Located in Connecticut’s first commercial green building, indoor cycling enthusiasts know they’re not only getting a good workout, but they’re also powering the facility. Each of the 25 spin bikes is connected to an individual generator, allowing the club to create clean, renewable energy and reduce carbon emissions. Because riders can control the resistance level during a workout, they can regulate their individual renewable energy output. Who knew that a typical 20-bike group cycling class can create enough energy to light 72 homes for a month?

Go Irish dancing to kick off your spring fitness

Ever sneak a peek at a Riverdancer's bum? Go on... you know you want to. Of course they have buns of steel. All those leaps and fancy steps don't come easy! Take up Irish dancing and you, too, will see a change in your body, while having fun doing it.

Irish Dancing for fitness

Ever sneak a peek at a Riverdancer's bum? Go on... you know you want to. Of course they have buns of steel. All those leaps and fancy steps don't come easy! Take up Irish dancing and you, too, will see a change in your body, while having fun doing it.

Irish dancing beyond Riverdance

But wait, there's more to Irish dancing than the bright lights of Riverdance or the fiercely competitive world you may have seen in Jig and TLC's Strictly Irish Dancing. When the stage lights go off and the cameras are put away, Irish dancing goes back to its roots as an inclusive community practice — something you're most likely to see practiced as set dancing or ceili dancing nowadays.

Ceilis  and set dances are social occasions punctuated by live Irish music and folk dancing, with a dance caller on hand to guide you through the steps. If you can walk, you can do this type of dancing; think contra or square dancing with a little extra prance. And if you're reading this in March — St. Patrick's Day, everybody! — your odds of finding a set or ceili dance near you are better than ever.

You don't have to dance at ceilis and set dances; you're also welcome to sit and watch, visit with your neighbors a bit, then get up and dance if you're so inclined. But if you've gotten that far, you might as well try! Here's just a glimpse at what you get from taking the leap.

'Whew! That's a real workout!'

That's the first thing almost every new dancer says. And with good reason! A long set or ceili dance can easily last for five minutes of near-constant movement — and that's just one dance. You'll be having so much fun that you won't even notice calories melting away, your lower-body bone density increasing and — let's not forget — that famous Riverdance bum taking shape right behind you.

'Irish dancing is lively fun'

That's usually the second thing out of a new dancer's mouth. It's something about the intersection of simple steps, dancing in community and live, lively music that does it, harking back to the days when dancing to live music was the norm, not the exception. If ever find yourself feeling shy or isolated, going to a ceili or set dance is a great opportunity to make healthy connections with others.

Mind you, some people do take their set and ceili dancing very seriously — but in a social setting, the response to mistakes is almost always "You messed up? Who cares — keep dancing!"

Get out there!

If Irish music has ever set your toes a-tapping, Irish dance is for you. As Amber H., one of the attendees at a recent ceili in Anchorage, Alaska, explained when I asked her why she did Irish dancing, "It's music you can't not dance to... so it's nice to know how to move to it."

Interested in learning to Irish dance but can't attend a ceili? Check out Eirerobics for an Irish dance-based workout. If you want to take up more traditional steps, Olive Hurley, Jean Butler and Colin Dunne all offer instructional DVDs to get you on your way. You can also stream online workshops straight from Diddlyi.com to get you started and then refine your Irish dancing technique.

Singer Anastacia's cancer returns after 10 years

The pop singer successfully beat breast cancer in 2003.

Anastacia breast cancer

Anastacia, the 44-year-old singer-songwriter originally from Chicago, has had to cancel her upcoming European tour to fight breast cancer once again.

Despite a successful battle with the disease in 2003, it has returned to the singer's body. Due to the illness, Anastacia has had to cancel her tour and all other performances until further notice. Those upcoming live dates include a world tour that was scheduled to begin on April 6 in London and a performance at the Dubai World Cup .

In a statement posted to her Facebook page, the singer said, "I feel so awful to be letting down all my amazing fans who were looking forward to 'It's A Man's World Tour'. It just breaks my heart to disappoint them."

Inspiration: Celebrity breast cancer survivors>>

Despite being an American, Anastacia has seen most of her career successes outside of the country. Her 1999 debut album Not that Kind gained major success throughout Europe and Oceanic nations Australia and New Zealand.

It even earned her the title of biggest-selling single in Australia in 2000. Despite her poor U.S. sales, Anastacia still landed the prestigious World's Best Selling New Female Pop Artist award at the 2001 World Music Awards. Her hits, made up mostly of dance and club numbers, continue to do well throughout the globe.

She has seen mild success in the States as well. Two of her most famous moments came from American collaborations. Those moments include the time Anastacia joined Celine Dion, Shakira, Cher, Dixie Chicks, and Stevie Nicks for 2002's VH1's Divas Live concert. She also contributed the song "Love Is a Crime" to the Chicago soundtrack.

Breast cancer rumor alert: Keep your bras on, ladies>>

Anastacia originally discovered her 2003 bout of breast cancer after a routine mammogram she had pre-breast reduction surgery. She was considering the surgery because of her severe back pain. The singer successfully underwent surgery and radiation therapy then and, hopefully, will have the same results during her new fight as well.

We've got our fingers crossed!

Nashville recap: Goodbye, brother

It's a time for new beginnings on Nashville, but not all are happy.

nashville recap

Happy birthday, Deacon!

It's Deacon's birthday — and all he usually does it stay home and watch Old Yeller — so Juliette decides to throw him a huge bash at The Bluebird Cafe.

No matter that her mother is just out of rehab and needs her — it's party time! She invites all big names in country music and enlists the innocent Scarlett to get him there.

And, surprisingly, he goes and only feigns a little anger when he finds out the real reason for the party. The party is a smash, even though Juliette feels a little threatened when Gunnar and Scarlett perform.

"If I’d known they were that good, I might not have asked them to join the stage with me," she tells Deacon. It would sound like a joke coming from anyone else. From Juliette? Yeah, she's jealous.

"They're the real deal," Deacon replies.

Let's get these kids a record deal already!

Rayna also makes it to the party, even though the tabloid drama has them on the outs again . She sings this really haunting song in honor of Deacon — "Stronger Than Me"— and she later tells him she wants "to do right by him."

What that means at this point is anyone's guess.

On a side note: We think it's time to establish the Nashville drinking game. How to play? Drink every time you see a real-life country star make a cameo. Good thing we didn't start this before, 'cause you'd probably be in the hospital with alcohol poisoning right now: Pam Tillis, Vince Gill, Kip Moore and The Black Keys' Dan Auerbach all made appearances at Deacon's birthday party.

And doesn't Gill totally look like Glenn Beck these days?

Which actress stole Connie Britton's role of a lifetime? >>

It's tabloid time

Nashville recap

Teddy and Rayna naturally want to keep their divorce on the down low from the press — that's why they filed in a different county. Too late, though: The tabloids have already picked up on the drama and Rayna and the girls find out about it while the grocery store.

"Just buy all the magazines," Rayna — in full freakout mode — tells her sister.

Yep, Teddy and Rayna are the tabloid story of the moment and she seems to be getting the blame for all of it, thanks to her connections to both the Dreamy Deacon and Dream Liam McGuiness. But, we all know the real story: That Teddy cheated first.

Rayna also tells her estranged husband that Maddie heard all about his relationship with Peggy through a phone call. She, naturally, wants Peggy to stay away from the girls.

So, how is Teddy going to see his ladylove now? By hiring her, that's how. Smooth, Teddy.

Daddy Warbucks Lamar makes another appearance in this episode to give his condolences to Rayna — and to pull his weight with Teddy. He gives the new mayor a list of "suggested" cabinet members, though it's pretty apparent the people on the list are expected, not really suggested.

So, what does Teddy do? He finally grows some cojones and stands up to Lamar. And, in a surprise twist, he asks former mayoral opponent Coleman to be his deputy mayor. And he accepts, which is good because Coleman seems to know what he's doing, while Teddy seems in way over his head.

Connie Britton's hair has a blog and a Twitter >>

Bye, brother

Everything seems to be going great in the little Gunnar/Scarlett/Gunnar's convict brother household. Too bad Jason has to go and ruin everything by keeping a loaded gun in their house. Gunnar is furious and meets his brother on a bridge. He confronts him about the gun and Jason basically insinuates that he needs it to stay alive.

Oh, and that Gunnar owes him eight years since he ditched him during that robbery. Because, of course. Gunnar isn't deterred, though: He throws the gun off the bridge and tells his brother they're done.

Cut to Deacon's party: Gunnar is having a great time playing old-timey country songs when some detectives in suits approach him. This can't be good.

Scarlett notices his absence from the party and is visibly worried. Yes, there are definitely more feelings there than she lets on. So, did the Feds finally catch up with Jason for skipping parole in Texas?

Nope, it's actually much worse than that: Jason is in the morgue and Gunnar has to identify the body. Awful.

He stays out all night and Scarlett is furious when he finally stumbles in — until she sees the dead look on his face. We find out that Jason was beaten to death by some guys in an alley and Gunnar feels super guilty because he took his brother's gun away.

"He didn't stand a chance," Gunnar says.

So, Scarlett goes to comfort him. Naturally, the comfort turns into kissing and then sex, since the last scenes show them pulling off each other's clothes. We've been pulling for this moment, but right after his brother dies? Weird timing.

7 Dirty Little Secrets

1

I love fondue. And basically just melted cheese and bread, on a fork, in my mouth.

2

I watch any and all reality TV. I don't discriminate. You name it, I watch it.

3

I lie about how much sleep I get. At an interview this morning, they asked if I was well rested. I said I was, but I was taping till 5 a.m. that morning!

4

I love pajamas and have a lot of them since I lived in Canada. Sometimes I stay in my PJs all day.

5

I use drugstore beauty products. I will try anything once... well, except for animal intestines or something.

6

I used to have a major crush on Brian Austin Green. Everyone else was obsessed with Luke or Jason but for me, it was all Brian. And now he's with Megan Fox, so that says it all.

7

I still sometimes sleep with a hall light on. It's less weird than a night light, right?

Consignment shopping tips for the budget mom

Woman shopping for purses

You know the feeling... the shopping guilt that sets in after you just spent a lot of money on a sweet purchase. Maybe a designer handbag or a pair of expensive shoes that just made your day?

Great deals, low price

For most moms, myself included, it's an unrealistic habit to buy really expensive shoes and handbags every few months. This is where the genius of consignment shopping kicks in — who was the pioneer behind this concept, anyway? I say "Thank you!" to them — a handbag from a few seasons back can still be a major staple in a woman's wardrobe, and someday it will carry its own weight in vintage value. Besides, some items that are just a little worn-in feel better and add more character. Consignment shopping offers an opportunity to find unique pieces and test the creative eye.

Budget shopping, not budget style

It's definitely OK to invest in quality pieces that accentuate and add sparkle to your wardrobe, but busy moms not only juggle the balance of life — they're usually keeping track of a budget, too. The need to be financially conscious when shopping for daily looks is a reality. Just because moms are on a budget doesn't mean they can't steal the show, though. What did my mother always tell me? "Money can't ever buy you an eye for good taste or class. It's what you make out of what you have."

The key to consignment shopping is to look for quality, classic pieces that are timeless and don't fall into the trendy category. Keep an eye out for some of these items while treasure hunting for your next staple piece.

A classic purse in black or brown

A classic leather handbag is a staple piece, something that will last you a lifetime and fit into any look you pull together.

Just remember, consignment shopping doesn't mean you pick up a designer piece for Goodwill prices — it just means you can grab a beautiful staple for less.

Look for black or brown purses that mimic the classic lines and go-with-anything good looks of this Legacy leather mini tanner.

Isabel Marant Carla pleated skirt A leather skirt

A leather skirt will always give your wardrobe that extra edge. You can wear it nicely polished and paired with a sweater or blouse on top, or dress it down with a tucked-in T-shirt. Either way, the leather skirt makes your look instantly chic. We love the flattering look of a pleated leather skirt, so when consignment shopping, look for a skirt that mimics the appearance of the Isabel Marant Carla pleated skirt . Scotch egg recipe

0
0
Scotch eggs, a menu staple in gastropubs across Great Britain, are popping up on plates all around the U.S.! And for good reason... they're SUPER delicious!

Scott eggs

We used the increasingly popular quail eggs to make these Scotch eggs. Quail eggs are small speckled eggs found in Asian grocery stores and some local food markets. If you can't get your hands on any, regular eggs work just fine, too!

Scotch egg recipe

Yields 10-12 scotch eggs or 20-24 halves

Ingredients:

  • 10-12 quail eggs
  • 1 pound ground sausage
  • 1/4 cup flour
  • 1 regular-sized egg, beaten with a tablespoon of water for egg wash
  • 3/4 cup plain breadcrumbs
  • 2 cups vegetable oil for deep-frying
  • Kosher salt
  • Favorite prepared mustard for serving

Directions:

  1. Place quail eggs in a pot and gently cover with water by one inch. Place pot over medium heat and bring to a boil. Once boiling, turn off the heat and the cover the pot for 2-3 minutes. When time is up, remove the eggs from the hot water. Once cool enough to handle, peel off the shells and set aside.
  2. Preheat oven to 350 degrees F. Set out three shallow bowls. Place the flour in one, egg wash in another and breadcrumbs in the last. Take your ground sausage and separate into 10-12 pieces flattened with your hand to form a circle.
  3. Next, take an egg and place it in the center of one of the flattened sausage patties. Wrap the raw sausage up around the egg completely enclosing the egg in the sausage .
  4. Next, roll sausage-covered egg in the flour and then roll it in the egg wash. Last, coat completely with the breadcrumbs. Continue this process with the additional eggs.
  5. Heat vegetable oil to between 350-360 degrees F. Carefully fry prepared eggs for about 4-6 minutes or until nicely browned and crispy all around.
  6. Remove eggs from the hot oil with a slotted spoon and place on paper towels or bags to drain. Once all eggs are fried, put them in a baking dish with low sides and place in the oven about 3-5 minutes to ensure sausage is cooked through. Sprinkle with kosher salt and serve warm or cool with your favorite mustard.

Quick Tip

A deep-fry oil thermometer is an affordable kitchen tool and extremely useful when deep-frying anything. With these Scotch eggs, keeping the oil's temperature between 340 and 360 degrees F will ensure they deep-fry crisp and golden color you desire.

Tina Fey and Jason Bateman to play brother and sister

0
0
If you wanted any more completely lovable stars, you'd have to cast Paul Rudd: Tina Fey and Jason Bateman are attached to star together in an adaptation of This Is Where I Leave You.

Tina Fey and Jason Bateman

Tina Fey is in negotiations to play Jason Bateman's cinematic big sis in the movie version of the book This is Where I Leave You, by Jonathan Tropper, The Hollywood Reporter said this week.

The story focuses on Judd Foxman , a radio shock-jock whose father dies, bringing together Foxman and his three grown-up siblings.

The dysfunctional family members haven't seen one another in a decade, and they've largely left their Jewish heritage behind, but they decide to honor their deceased father's wishes and follow the Jewish ritual of sitting shiva: seven days, in the house, with each other.

Sounds a little like the concept for Arrested Development, huh?

Foxman is also suffering another blow life has dealt him: His wife has been having an affair with his boss for over a year. It's recently become public, humiliating the disc jockey. And on the same day his father dies, Foxman learns his wife is pregnant.

Fey will play Bateman's older sister, "a woman who is married and whose first love now has brain damage," writes The Hollywood Reporter.

Tina Fey's prayer for her daughter>>

This Is Where I Leave You was published in 2009, and was a bestseller.

Author Tropper adapted his book into the movie script. It was reported in May 2012 that the movie version was a go with Adam Shankman directing, and Bateman, Zac Efron, Leslie Mann and Goldie Hawn vying for parts.

Looks like only Bateman hung on to that list, as now Shawn Levy is set to direct. Levy and Fey have worked together before, on the 2010 Fey/Steve Carell comedy Date Night.

Too bad Efron dropped out; he could easily be Bateman's little bro. But it's nice to know what Fey's up to post-30 Rock, whose departure has left a sad and gaping hole in our viewing schedule.

Weekend watch: History's Vikings

0
0
Prepare for lots of "Arrrrrghs" and "Braaaaghs"! Vikings is nothing if not violent.

Vikings Ragnar and Lagertha

In my house, everyone knows I don't watch "murder-y" shows. "Murder-y," though, doesn't mean there can't be bloody, horrific deaths. It just means they can't involve serial killers or sociopaths. Anything committed by aliens, centuries-old civilizations or angry family members is fair game. That's why I'm completely in love with the History Channel's new show Vikings... and why everyone else is appalled.

Can you spot the familiar face amongst the Vikings?>>

The first episode, which premieres this Sunday, just barely touches on the violence that's usually connected to the Vikings and the Norse Dark Ages. But it promises much more ahead. If blood and guts aren't your thing, though, fret not. It's the History Channel. The show will also touch on the Nordic familial and friendly relationships among the characters. Plus, the first episode even hints at a little bit of Tudors-style between-the-bear-skin-blankets action. In other words, Vikings has the makings of a show worthy of a Sunday on the couch with that bloodthirsty boyfriend or hubby or skin-thirsty BFF. There's a little somethin-somethin for everyone.

But what's it about?

Vikings' Floki

It's a pretty simple premise, actually. The main character is the rugged and hot Ragnar , a mostly mild-tempered husband and father with an ambitious, warrior's heart who urges his earl/chieftain to press in new directions for new towns to pillage. Earl Haraldson is stuck in his old-man ways, though, and refuses to embark on the new journey. Even the mention of a new destination puts Ragnar on Haraldson's sh*t list. With the help of his cool brother and his goofy, perhaps not-all-there BFF, Floki , Ragnar will strike out west without the consent of his earl. But what will he find and what will await him upon his return?

Four new shows you won't see 'til the fall>>

I love it... but don't expect too much. Despite its sometimes Game of Thrones-esque settings and cinematography, Vikings falls just shy of the complexities of the show written by an actual seasoned author. What it lacks in coyness, though, it makes up for with historical perspective. Vikings — though often seeming like a Nordic soap opera — takes impressive time to explore Norse religion and ideologies in a non-docu way.

It's not for everyone. But it's worth a try.

Vikings premieres Sunday, March 3 on the History Channel at 10/9c.

Fight to keep music in your kids' school this month

March marks Music in Our Schools Month . Use this time to advocate for your child's school music program.
School band

Many music programs in schools around the country are being eliminated due to budget cuts. March marks Music in Our Schools Month . Use this time to advocate for your child's school music program.

Honor MIOSM

Music is monumental

Music can change your child’s life — literally. Music builds self-confidence and helps children gain social skills to help connect them to other kids and the world in general. Music students score higher on verbal and math portions of SATs, have fewer drug and alcohol problems and fewer altercations with the law. Like the sound of that?

Talk to your kids about drugs and alcohol>>

Maintain the music

Elizabeth Lasko, assistant executive director, center for members and constituency relations with the National Association for Music Education , says it is much easier to maintain — and build upon — any existing music program your child’s school may already have, than to lose it and have to work to get it back.

She adds, "So it’s worth putting every available resource into protecting a program.”

And don't take your child’s music program for granted.

Get involved however you can

Check in with your child’s homeroom teacher and/or music teacher to find out what needs to be done to support the music program.

Don’t underestimate the importance of arts in schools>>

Lasko says, “There may be an existing booster program or other support system, or one may need to be started.”

If you are going to spearhead one or want to breathe some life into the existing music booster program, reach out to other parents to help with your efforts. Send flyers home in backpacks, organize meetings and brainstorm how you can work together to gain support for the school’s music program.

Make the most of MIOSM

Work with your child’s school’s leaders to organize some fun activities this March geared toward encouraging music education and appreciation in honor of MIOSM.

Lasko suggests using MIOSM to bring visibility to your child’s school music program by organizing community events like putting on a school talent show featuring musical acts or making a video asking for support. Using social media is important too. You can connect with local radio, television and newspapers to help spread the word throughout your community. Also, consider organizing a school or class field trip to see a local musical group perform or invite a local group to come to your child’s school.

Ways to get involved in your kids’ school>>

Lasko also points to the organization’s secondary school honor society, Tri-M, which spotlights the achievements of music students and their community spirit.

She says, “It’s a great way to show how important music is and how great music kids are — as we say, music education orchestrates success!”

Get political

Take your advocacy for music education to local legislature. NAFME offers extensive how-tos on its site regarding gaining support by working with government officials, including how to get resolutions passed, and contacting local media to get the word out to your community.

All you need is just a few minutes to make this quick and delicious Sicilian chicken dish. Chicken soaked in lemon and oregano dressing will impress your taste buds!

Lemon and oregano chicken fillet recipe

If you only have a few minutes to spare, it doesn't mean that you cannot whip up something absolutely delectable in your kitchen. All you need is a lemon, chicken fillets and some dried oregano to make this delicious Sicilian chicken dish.

Lemon and oregano chicken fillet recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1 pound chicken fillets
  • Juice of 1 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon dried oregano
  • 1/2 teaspoon salt
  • 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil plus more for cooking
  • Breadcrumbs to coat chicken
  • Black pepper

Directions:

  1. In a dish, mix lemon juice, salt, oregano and 2 tablespoons of extra-virgin olive oil. Mix well then set aside.
  2. Lightly brush chicken with extra-virgin olive oil on both sides. Don’t wet it too much.
  3. Cover both sides with breadcrumbs. Shake off excess.
  4. Saute in a hot saucepan with extra-virgin olive oil on medium–high fire. Brown both sides.
  5. While still hot, quickly dip both sides of cooked chicken in the lemon mixture. The longer you soak the chicken, the more it will absorb the flavor. One quick dip of both sides is enough if you want the flavor to be mild. If you want it stronger, let it stay longer in the lemon mixture.
  6. Pairs well with orange and lettuce salad.

What?! Taylor Swift spent the night with Ed Sheeran?

0

The internet is buzzing over rumors Taylor Swift spent all night with Ed Sheeran in a London hotel room after the BRIT Awards. Sources say Sheeran left "looking very happy."

Ed Sheeran at the 2013 BRIT Awards.

The internet is ablaze this Friday afternoon over reports that Taylor Swift dumped Tom Odell for another British singer — this one much more successful — Ed Sheeran.

Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran? Eh, kind of a downgrade for her. After all, she was dating Harry Styles, a member of the most famous boy band to ever come out of the UK, One Direction. Like, ever.

Taylor Swift likes them British >>

One thing seems relatively concrete: Taylor Swift loves British accents. Maybe that's why she and Ed Sheeran are maybe, possibly, totally a thing now.

Sheeran's accent ups his cute factor a couple of points.

Oddly enough, Ed Sheeran was pretty clear to TMZ last week when he emphatically declined to be Taylor Swift's next boyfriend. The question was clear to Sheeran: "Would you date her?" and Sheeran shook his head full of messy red hair and gave a simple, "Uh, no." Hmm. Telling, indeed.

An ex-boyfriend talks the secrets of dating Taylor Swift>>

So what was Taylor Swift doing with Ed Sheeran last night? The extremely credible British paper the Daily Mail reports Sheeran and Swift spent "the majority of the evening before the 2013 BRIT Awards" together in a hotel room. Gasp! The two must have been sleeping together because that is the only thing that ever goes on in a hotel room.

While it has been confirmed by other news sources that Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran were in a hotel room together until 4 a.m. and that Sheeran left the room looking "very happy," it seems more likely the duo were simply writing songs together. Like literally writing musical lyrics and notes on paper.

Speculation continues, though, since the Daily Mail reports there are several factors that make Sheeran a prime Swift boyfriend.

1. Sheeran and Swift have been friends for a long time
2. Sheeran has a tattoo of the word "red" on his arm
3. Sheeran is friends with Swift's ex-boyfriend Harry Styles

Since Taylor Swift and Ed Sheeran are planning to go on tour together, it seems more likely the duo were collaborating on future projects. Though given Swift's newly minted reputation with British men, we can't say we'd be surprised if Swift and Sheeran turn into a couple.

Girl Scouts to Honey Boo Boo: Quit selling our cookies!

0

Honey Boo Boo's attempt to help a friend sell Girl Scout cookies has fallen flat, with the Girl Scouts of the USA demanding the family take down a Facebook ad.

Mama June and Honey Boo Boo on televisionTake it down! That's what the Girl Scouts of the USA told Honey Boo Boo and her family about removing a Facebook ad posted for a friend.

Honey Boo Boo and her mom, June Shannon, posted the ad for Girl Scout cookies on HBB's Facebook page, which had 703,357 likes as of press time.

HBB is not a Girl Scout herself; she's just helping out a friend.

A GSUSA representative in Georgia, HBB's home state, told TMZ that the organization contacted HBB's site admin and told them selling cookies online is against the rules, because the cookie sales are meant to teach girls "all sorts of things, including goal setting, people skills, etc.," wrote TMZ.

The ad disappeared from the Facebook page, but the HBB family is fulfilling all the orders already made.

"All cookies that have been paid for have been shipped!" someone posting as Honey Boo Boo wrote on the Facebook page Tuesday. "Thanks everyone for supporting Girl Scouts!"

Anyone who didn't get to order, the HBB poster goes on to add, can email the family and put in a request.

Honey Boo Boo is on Barbara Walters' "Most Fascinating" list>>

Won't this further annoy GSUSA?

Tough darts, June Shannon told TMZ. "If I can raise more money for a troop, whoever they are, especially in an area where they don’t get a lot of money, and parents can’t afford to buy a ton of cookies, why wouldn't I help? We're doing nothing wrong."

GSUSA might want to quibble with that last statement. Its online official rules forbid online sales of cookies, though it says it's looking into ways "to engage consumers in online sales" while still developing "critical and relevant entrepreneurship skills."

Does standing with your mom in front of a table at the grocery store count as "critical and relevant" skills? Honey Boo Boo has already shown she can earn, why not let her sell on Facebook?

Escape March with HGTV's Hawaii Life

0

It's freezing outside! You know where it's never cold? Hawaii!

Hawaii Life sells not just homes but lifestyles

HGTV has really nailed it with their new show. As super-storms like Nemo rip through our country dumping feet of snow on some parts of the U.S., HGTV is offering up an escape. Their new show, Hawaii Life, will never show pictures of snow, ice or winter sports. Instead, it offers up views of lush beaches, stunning volcanos and some pretty gorgeous housing. It's the prettiest and cheapest winter escape in existence.

Hawaii Life opens with the most motivating line on television. One of the Hawaii Life Realty brokers tells viewers, "You don't have to be rich to live in Hawaii — you just have to want it."

Family-friendly spring breaks on a budget >>

Hawaii Life sells not just homes but lifestyles

That's definitely true, too. Recent episodes have included buyers like an avid scuba driver, a seventh-grade teacher and a couple of Washington transplants with twin daughters, all looking at houses with very middle-America selling prices . Of course, there's also the seemingly independently wealthy couple looking for something that sells for around $1 million. In most cases, the brokers from Hawaii Life Realty have been able to locate houses within the buyers' budgets without causing them to sacrifice hardly any of their demands. Even better, all the homes come with spectacular views!

Spring break with these other sunny shows>>

According to HGTV a large amount of Hawaii Life Realty's brokers aren't even from the islands. They're transplants, just like many of their buyers. Hawaii Life Realty has six offices scattered across the Hawaiian Islands and employs more than 125 Realtors. That's pretty impressive, especially when you take into consideration that the firm has only been open for three years. Throughout the show, we've rarely seen buyers rushed and have never seen them expected to compromise on the amenities they wanted and prices they were willing to pay. That's not just an indicator of a decent Hawaiian housing market but is a great "tell" that HLR has hired some truly thoughtful brokers.

HGTV is constantly showing new and old episodes of Hawaii Life. We guarantee that after just one episode, you'll contemplate connecting with Hawaii Life Realty for a little property browsing of your own! If you can't afford the move, though, just enjoy the view from HGTV.

What you need to know before you buy cookware

0

You can find cookware in a variety of materials, from copper to porcelain and beyond. Which one you buy depends on how you plan to use it. Find out what you need to know before dropping hundreds on that matching cook set.

Cookware at department store

Copper or porcelain?

You can find cookware in a variety of materials, from copper to porcelain and beyond. Which one you buy depends on how you plan to use it. Find out what you need to know before dropping hundreds on that matching cook set.

Aluminum cookware

Pros

Anodized aluminum pots and pans are lightweight, resist denting and scratching, don't rust and are excellent thermal conductors of heat . Approximately half of all cookware manufactured is made from aluminum, and it is often used to improve stainless steel.

Cons

Raw aluminum is reactive to alkaline and acidic ingredients and prone to warping and scratching. It can also discolor certain foods . Fortunately, most aluminum pots and pans are treated with a coating of aluminum oxide, which vastly improves the cooking properties.

Cast-iron cookware

Pros

A properly seasoned cast-iron skillet is the not-so-secret weapon of many cooks. Great for simmering and browning, cast iron imbues years of flavor into every meal. It's inexpensive, won't warp, conducts heat very well and, if seasoned well, has a relatively nonstick surface. You can also easily go from stovetop to oven.

How to care for a cast-iron skillet>>

Cons

Even though no kitchen is complete without a cast-iron skillet, it does have its drawbacks. It's heavy, reactive, high-maintenance and not suited for all food. It also isn't recommended for ceramic-glass cooktops. It's worth noting that cast iron leaches — surprise — iron into your food. Many people consider this a benefit, but unexpected metal in the diet can be dangerous for certain people.

Ceramic cookware

Pros

Pots and pans made from ceramic are perhaps the most versatile cookware available in stores today. They can survive heat that would melt stainless steel but still can be used to store food in the refrigerator and freezer. And unlike metal cookware, they can be used in a microwave. They are generally very easy to maintain with a naturally nonstick surface, but can take mild abrasives and scrubbing without marring their attractive gloss finish, which is important since they also make attractive serving dishes. They're widely considered to be the least reactive cookware available.

Cons

Despite many superior cooking and aesthetic qualities, ceramic cookware also has some drawbacks. It can be heavy and cumbersome and will crack if dropped. It may also crack your tile floor. Older cookware made from ceramic and stone may contain lead. Additionally, cheaper ceramic cookware may discolor ceramic-glass cooktops at higher heat.

Copper cookware

Pros

Copper pots are revered for their ability to conduct heat and cook food very evenly. Chefs prize them for their ability to quickly achieve precise temperatures and maintain them, making them perfect for sauces, browning and braising. Also, they're gorgeous and will complement any kitchen.

Cons

Almost as renown as copper cookware's precision is their daunting price and their reactiveness to acid. Most are now lined with stainless steel or tin, but pure copper pots impart a metallic taste to food and can leave gray streaks. Frequent polishing is the price of beauty, and they can dent fairly easily. You absolutely should not use them on a ceramic-glass-top stove.

Glass cookware

Pros

Glass is inexpensive, nonporous and nonreactive. Being nonreactive is an especially useful benefit for high-acid food like tomatoes and volatile ones like yeast. Their nonporous nature may be important to safety-conscious people, as there is growing concern over trace amounts of heavy metal leaching into food from metal cookware. Glass also bakes faster and retains heat longer than metal. Snap on a heat-safe lid, and you can easily serve up hot food at a party or picnic.

Cons

Glass is heavy and especially prone to breaking when dropped. Glass can also be difficult to clean when food bakes onto it. It's not recommended for ceramic-glass cooktops.

Nonstick cookware

Pros

Cookware with nonstick coatings like Teflon, Tefal, Silverstone, Anolon, Circulon, Calphalon and others are remarkably easy to cook with and clean. They're healthier, as they require less butter or oil to start a dish, and some are engineered to be oven-safe. Nonstick ceramic is quickly growing in popularity and offsets some of the negative and dangerous aspects of nonstick coatings.

Cons

Cookware with nonstick coatings can only be used with safe utensils like plastic and wood or you risk scratching through the coating, which accelerates its inevitable erosion. Under heavy use, nonstick coatings eventually flake and scratch and introduce harmful chemicals into your food. At high heat some of these coatings, notably Teflon, emit offgas, which is toxic to humans, inducing flu-like symptoms. Bird-lovers beware, offgas is fatal to birds.

Porcelain enamel cookware

Pros

Seen frequently as Dutch ovens and large skillets, these dishes are usually made from cast iron or carbon steel coated in porcelain enamel. They combine some of the best qualities of ceramic and cast iron. They are nonreactive and easy to clean like ceramic but don't need to be seasoned like cast iron.

Cons

They also combine some of the drawbacks of both. They're heavy and will break when dropped. There are also reports of their coating discoloring ceramic-glass cooktops at high heat, so be careful when using them.

Silicone cookware

Pros

Made from sand and oxygen, silicone is nonstick, nonreactive and safe to use in the oven, microwave, refrigerator, freezer and dishwasher. They're also very lightweight and won't stain.

Cons

They are a bit on the expensive side and can be awkward and unstable.

Stainless-steel cookware

Pros

The workhorse of kitchens throughout the world, you can find this cookware in just about every home in America. Stainless-steel cookware is made from an alloy of metals, which usually include some combination of steel, carbon, nickel and chromium. They're engineered to be nonporous, durable, corrosion-resistant and easy to clean.

Cons

Stainless steel is one of the more expensive types of cookware you can buy, especially when combined with other metals like copper . It has a tendency to discolor under high heat and pit when exposed to salt water. Additionally, if scratched, chromium and nickel could leach into your food.

Titanium cookware

Pros

Titanium is extraordinarily light and strong . It also heats very evenly and quickly. It's nonporous, nonreactive, nonallergic and can have an antibacterial coating. Titanium cookware resists scratching, denting and warping and is safe to use in the oven. If that's not enough, it's nonstick so you can start a dish without butter, oil or water. It can often be wiped clean with a washcloth.

Cons

As you might expect, titanium is very expensive — the only significant drawback. Many people decide the extra expense is justified and treat the cookware as an investment, since titanium will often still look like new after years of use.

Get the look: Michelle Williams's Oz-inspired makeup!

Michelle Williams looked fresh faced and flawless at the London premiere of her new film, Oz the Great and Powerful, this week. We asked her makeup artist, Sabrina Bedrani, to give us the scoop on her premiere beauty.

Michelle Williams

"My inspiration for the look always comes from the dress," makeup pro Sabrina Bedrani said of Michelle Williams' Burberry Prorsum gown. "Michelle was wearing a very colorful Burberry peacock feather dress, so I wanted to show some versatility in her makeup."

Bedrani primarily used Laura Mercier cosmetics to create the look.

Eyes

The eyes were the main focus of Williams' makeup, complete with a lot of sultry color and mascara. First, Bedrani lined Williams' upper and lower lash lines with Laura Mercier Caviar Stick Eye Colour in Smoke . Then, she used the same product in Grey Pearl  on the lids for a brightening effect.

On to the eyebrows: Bedrani used Laura Mercier Eye Brow Pencil in Fair Blonde  and Laura Mercier Eye Brow Gel  to fill in Williams' brows and define the shape. Finally, she added two coats of Laura Mercier Faux Lash Mascara to both the top and bottom lashes.

Face

Bedrani kept Williams' face "fresh and youthful" by first applying Laura Mercier Silk Crème Foundation in Cream Ivory  to even out the actress' complexion. She then added a few dabs of Laura Mercier Secret Camouflage in SC-1  to conceal imperfections and a dusting of Laura Mercier Loose Setting Powder  to set the look.

Finally, she added Laura Mercier Second Skin Cheek Colour in Heather Pink  to the star's cheeks for a healthy glow.

Lips

Bedrani topped off the look with a dab of Laura Mercier Lip Stain in Scarlet .

"[I used it to] complement the hue of the dress," the stylist said.

Love it!

Jennifer Aniston is ready to be Mrs. Theroux

0

The big day is coming up soon for Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux. People has all of the inside details on their upcoming nuptials.

JenniferAnistonwedding

Jennifer Aniston's fans have been waiting for their favorite star's big day and it appears that day is getting closer. In this week's People cover story, the wedding countdown for Aniston and her fiancé Justin Theroux has begun.

The wedding will happen soon, but not before the actress finishes shooting her latest film, Untitled Elmore Leonard Project, on March 8 in Connecticut. However, the bride-to-be has handled many of the major wedding tasks already, including setting the date, picking out wedding bands and deciding on a dress.

A source told People about the 44-year-old's current state of mind, saying, "Jen seems more confident than ever and they've become a great team."

Her 41-year-old husband-to-be doesn't seem to mind that the spotlight is on Aniston most of the time. The two met during the filming of Wanderlust and started spending a lot of time together back in May 2011.

They got engaged about four months after Aniston's ex-husband Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie did, so there was plenty of comparison in the press about the supposedly competing couples. Let's hope that the Aniston-Theroux wedding will end all of that ridiculous speculation.

Jennifer Aniston's yellow bling is worth a lot of green>>

Besides, fans still have to wonder where Aniston is getting married. Or when she's going to have that baby bump that the press has been giving her all of these years.

One thing is for certain, according to People's inside source: "It will be a small affair with their closest friends."

It sounds like a perfect day for America's sweetheart.
