How to Stop Getting All Those Annoying Catalogs in the Mail

$
0
0

We all have our favorite catalog of choice that we love flipping through, but what's with the million others that are constantly sent to us in the mail? It's super-tedious to have to sift through all the junk, and it totally makes us feel guilty when we inevitably end up throwing all that paper right in the trash — yet companies continue to bombard us with catalog after catalog of crap.

But being beaten over the head with catalogs isn't just a fact of life we have to accept. There are ways to get rid of them for good.

Catalog Choice

How it works: When you get unwanted catalogs or even junk mail or mail solicitations, go to Catalog Choice's website and submit that sender's information for an opt-out. From there, Catalog Choice takes care of the rest, letting that company know that you no longer want to receive mailings from them. They can even stop phonebook deliveries. Can we get a, "hell yeah"?

Cost: Free! Catalog Choice is a nonprofit organization that is run by grants and donations.

Get started: Visit catalogchoice.org to register. We suggest saving up a batch of catalogs and junk mail and entering them online all at one time.

Tips: It can take up to 90 days for the mailings to stop, so be patient. Also, be sure to register your business and use Catalog Choice to reduce even more mail clutter.

PaperKarma

How it works: We were pretty bummed when we heard that PaperKarma went out of business a while back, but are pretty stoked that they are all set to relaunch soon. The new app will be super user-friendly: All you have to do is snap a pic of the catalog you don't want and press send to be unsubscribed.

Cost: The app is currently free.

Get started: You can currently make a reservation for the app. Visit the PaperKarma website for more information.

Go online to the source

Many times you are getting catalogs because you are registered on an online retail site. Make a quick stop online and head to the bottom of the page — there is typically an FAQ section or somewhere under customer service where you can fill out a simple form to opt-out of receiving catalogs and other mailings. In addition, it may give you the chance to opt-out of emails in the same form — bonus!

Pick up the phone

Apparently, your iPhone can be used to actually call people — who knew? If you're feeling old fashioned, grab your rotary phone smartphone and that stack of catalogs, sit down and start calling those customer service numbers on the back cover. They'll probably need your customer number, which will be located near your name and address, but in most cases, they'll be happy to help. Again, if you want to opt-out of emails from the same retailer, this is the perfect chance to ask them to take you off that list as well.

Ditch the Chemicals & Try These Clean Beauty Brands Instead

Until about 10 years ago, we didn't really pay much attention to the ingredients in our skin care and makeup. If it left our skin feeling softer and looking flawless, we were totally down to shellac that stuff on — but recently, we've become more aware that what we put on our skin actually ends up in our bodies, and the beauty industry has taken notice.

And the industry is also taking advantage by "green-washing" their products. That's right, just because a company markets itself as "clean," doesn't mean that it is. And to complicate things more, some of the companies that really are clean sell products that don't get the job done. It's enough to make you want to crawl back to your old dirty ways.

Why Are Cats So Dang Fussy Over Their Food?

$

0

Remember those old Fancy Feast commercials? The ones that depicted the perfectly coiffed, hopelessly white cat delicately nibbling from a crystal goblet? The message was yes, cats are picky eaters, but even the most discerning feline will fall for the taste of Fancy Feast.

The truth is that not all cats will even eat Fancy Feast, and sometimes you’ve got to think outside the box to find a diet that your cat will eat. Read on to learn about feline pickiness and how to combat it.

More: Do You Need to Worry About BPA Levels in Dogs?

Cats are not small dogs

One of my favorite veterinary terms is “indiscriminate eater.” We often use it when we describe our beloved canine friends, as they are famous for eating almost any item, food or not, that doesn’t eat them first.

Cats, thankfully, are much choosier about what they will eat than dogs are. Because of this, we see many fewer toxicities and obstructions secondary to ingestion of foreign objects in cats than we do in dogs. But if there’s a downside to their discerning palates, it can be that for some of them, finding a food that they like, or switching to a new food that’s necessary for medical reasons, can seem dang-near impossible.

Why are they like this?

Who knows? I have never seen any scientific research that explains why cats can be so difficult to feed. However, before you spend months and months and thousands of dollars trying everything that your local pet store has to offer, first consider whether this isn’t just your cat’s way of emptying your bank account, but actually a medical issue that needs to be addressed.

“Hyporexia” is the term we use to describe the state of having a decreased appetite, and it can be a sign of anything from kidney disease to cancer to food allergies. Even if your cat seems normal in every other way, a decrease in appetite, especially if it’s abrupt, should be checked out by your veterinarian.

Everything’s normal — now what?

If your cat checks out medically but still won’t eat, consider trying a cafeteria-style approach. Use paper plates to put out several samples of different foods. Draw a circle on the plate around each portion with a pencil or pen and label which food was put in which section — that way you don’t have to hover over your cat while he eats (which they hate, of course) — and you can come back later and decipher what’s been eaten and what’s been shunned.

More: 9 of Your Most Pressing Dog Health Questions Answered

Stink up the joint

Regardless of your station in life, you probably never imagined that you’d one day be playing chef to a cat. But consider a bit of gentle warming in the microwave to release the aroma of the food. Cats seem to be very heavily influenced by the smell of their food, perhaps even more so than the taste, so oftentimes a 10-second turn in the microwave will increase their interest level. Note that this typically only works for wet food, as the smell of kibble doesn’t really seem to change much with warming.

Pull out all the stops

Desperate times call for desperate measures. Sometimes a bit of low-sodium chicken broth drizzled over your cat’s food or a teaspoon of chicken baby food (no onions or garlic, please) as a topping can help to get your cat more interested in his food. Make sure that if your cat has any health problems or you’re trying to get him to lose a few pounds, you talk to your veterinarian about whether this is appropriate to try.

What if my cat hates the food my veterinarian prescribed?

If your cat needs to eat a special diet because of a previously diagnosed medical problem, and she absolutely refuses to entertain the idea of giving that diet a chance in her world, don’t give up. Your veterinarian prescribed that food for a good reason, and it’s important to do everything you can to make the switch successfully.

In general, cats hate change, and they often feel that way about their food. So try a very gradual switchover to the new stuff, putting both varieties out in separate bowls as a trial run or mixing them together. Over the course of several days, keep increasing the proportion of food that is the new food and decreasing the old stuff.

If your cat just “can’t even!” with the new stuff, ask your veterinarian if there is an alternative. All of the major prescription food manufacturers make diets for most of the common feline health issues, so ask to try a different brand. Many times a cat will prefer a different brand’s flavor profile, and you can feed the appropriate diet successfully.

This Video About How Your Child Sees a 'Normal' Day Is Everything

Most mamas — when asked about their day with the kids — tend to groan, remembering every spilled drink, public tantrum, missed nap and diaper malfunction. Sometimes it feels like we're barely holding it all together, and recounting another "normal" day makes us wonder, "Am I ever going to succeed at this mom thing?"

One video we stumbled across is challenging our idea of mama success in an amazing way by redefining a normal day through the eyes of our kids. It's a wow-moment video, created by Esther Anderson of the YouTube channel Story of This Life, sure to make you rethink that terrible, no-good, messy, normal day with your little ones.

Why Did My Kid Quit Chorus Without Telling Me?

Welcome to Survivor, in which author Catherine Newman tries to answer your questions about adolescents and why they’re like that — and how to love them despite everything.

Have a question for Newman? Send it to her here.

Question:

My 10-year-old quit chorus and didn't tell me for three weeks. For three weeks, we dropped her off before school for it and for three weeks, she chose not to tell us she wasn't going. I wanted to lose my shit and tell her every bad thing that happened to every person that wasn't where they said they would be in the history of the human race so she could understand why mom is acting like dropping out of chorus at 10 is a gateway drug to juvy. What should I have done?

Answer:

I read your question to my kids, and my 17-year-old was, I think it’s safe to say, triggered. "Remember when I wanted to quit chorus?" he said, and yes. Yes I did. He’d been 9 at the time, and he blurted it out, what I took to be this sudden, bolt-from-the-blue desire to quit the most ecstatically wonderful activity anyone had ever done. When I said, "But you love chorus!" he burst into tears and said, "No, Mama. You love chorus."

And I had to wrestle with the fact that this was true. I did love chorus! Blindingly so, as it turned out. Because when they sang "Jerusalem," those swelling little voices filled my eyes with the kind of misty tears that obscure your vision such that you can’t see your unhappy little singer unhappily singing. And also anxiously yawning in big wide-mouthed gulps of air, like a fish out of water. I opened my mind to this truth — you could probably hear the horrible, stuck door in my brain squealing on its rusted hinges — and saw my child as he actually was, not as I wished for him to be. Better late than never. He quit chorus.

In this case, you were not presented with the opportunity to do the wrong thing, as it was preempted by your child’s assumption that you would, which sucks. So let’s start there. My kids are in heated agreement that the first thing you should ask your child is, "Why did you want to quit chorus, and what did you imagine I would do if you’d told me?" Because both of them feel like the main issue here is about trust, and I’m inclined to agree with them. Kids will often create major long-run problems for themselves to avoid conflict in the short term. (Actually, my kids’ father is similarly inclined, but that’s a conversation for another day.) "Foster an environment where they don’t have to lie to you," the 14-year-old said, wisely but also annoyingly, like she was talking about adding banana to a smoothie. Oh, just that? Just fostering an environment where our kids trust us completely? Done.

But of course, she’s right, because it’s chorus now, but later (take my word on this) it’s honors classes and after-prom parties and driving and sex and drugs and other issues we haven’t even gotten to yet in our family. Grand theft auto, maybe. Prostitution. And we need to trust that they’ll tell us stuff — and they need to trust us to tell us. So, ask about the not telling you, and listen carefully. If the answer does not present itself clearly, then ask this follow-up question: "How can we change our relationship so that you’ll feel like you can trust me?" Listening better might be part of it. Being less judgmental, more open-minded. Easing the pressure. Behaving more calmly, if you are prone to angry flare-ups. Whatever it is, you will want to do that. And you can make clear that trust is not the same as everyone getting what they want. Maybe in your family, this person will have to finish out the year in chorus because once you start something, you have to see it through. OK. But there should at least be open, fearless dialogue about it. And your daughter should feel confident that her voice — even her not-singing voice — will be heard by you.

My daughter — damn her and her level-headedness! — also felt like you should describe your fear with an I statement so that you’re not accusing. "I felt scared when I realized I hadn’t known where you were all those weeks. I want you to be honest with me so that I can help keep you safe." Nice. And here’s what I would add: "Moving forward, let’s be sure to solve problems together, and I’ll try to be as open as possible so that you don’t have to dread talking to me. I promise you we’re on the same side." Whatever you think your most important work is as a parent of tweens and teens — setting limits, cultivating values, making sure your kids are safe and happy — you’re not going to be able to do it very effectively if your kids don’t see you as an ally. So make that job 1. (Just peel it and pop it right in the blender with the milk and strawberries! Easy-peasy.)

The Surprising Possible New Source for Emergency Contraception

$

In the days before we had a reliable, FDA-approved birth control pill, women attempted to control their fertility with a wide range of substances, including herbal options. Now, new research shows that one of those contraceptive folk remedies may have some science behind it.

More: How Your Period Changes After Pregnancy

A plant-based, nonsteroidal chemical — used in traditional Chinese medicine — has been shown effective in preliminary research at preventing the sperm and egg from meeting — a key part of fertilization. These substances were found to be effective at low doses, which may make them alternatives to existing hormone-based contraceptives, which sometimes come with annoying side effects.

The chemical works by subduing the sperm’s “power kick” — which is the actual scientific name and not something out of an ‘80s karate movie — preventing its little sperm tail from whipping it forcefully toward and into the egg.

More: These BDSM Companies Will Help You Keep Your Vegan Lifestyle

Researchers see this chemical as being an option in emergency contraception taken either before or after sex or in the form of something more permanent, like a skin patch or vaginal ring. Fun fact: It takes human sperm around five to six hours to mature once they land inside a woman, which should be enough time for the chemical to work its magic and stop the power kick.

On top of all that, this plant-based chemical could mean a new type of emergency contraception (which is typically taken after unprotected sex). Some people who are opposed to Plan B — the existing emergency contraceptive option — are not fans of the fact that it prevents the implantation of a possibly viable fertilized egg. (For them, the morally tricky part is the getting rid of the fertilized egg.) But if this new type of emergency contraceptive were available, that wouldn’t be an issue, as it would prevent the sperm from fertilizing the egg in the first place. Plus, it’s vegan!

More: Mother's Day in the Wake of Infertility

But don’t get off the pill just yet — we still need a cost-effective source of the chemicals, as they exist in very low concentrations in their wild plants of origin. And as a friendly reminder, just because something is marked as "natural" or "holistic" or is a well-known folk remedy, it doesn't necessarily mean it works or is safe.

Don't you dare suggest to Olivia White that C-sections aren't "real" births, or she'll slap you upside the head. She's had it with people who claim C-sections are the "easy" way out — and her recent post on Instagram shows exactly why there's nothing easy about a cesarean birth.

White — a blogger at House of White — has two daughters, both born by C-section. Annabelle, 3, and Theodora, 1, are happy and healthy little girls, but White points out that they "might not be here today" were it not for the cesareans that brought them safely into the world.

Her brutally honest post and photo have received almost 2,000 likes on Instagram, and many followers have shared their own C-section tales in the comments. As White points out, it's hard to say what's the worst part of a cesarean, from the fishing-wire incisions to the excruciating pain when the meds wear off to the humiliating "nanna" underpants afterward.

More: Can we all just stop the C-section judgment, please?

Nope, there's definitely nothing "easy" about a C-section delivery — and we commend White for telling it like it is in such a bold and relatable way.

The 'Blue Whale' Suicide Challenge Is No Joke

If you have a tween or teen who struggles with depression, anxiety or self-harm, you need to know about the latest social media "challenge" that's preying on vulnerable kids.

The "blue whale" suicide challenge is making its sinister way through the internet masquerading as a scavenger hunt-type game with a very dark twist. The challenge — supposedly originated in Russia by a man wanting to "cleanse society" — requires kids to complete a series of tasks, including slicing the outline of a whale in their skin and waking up in the middle of the night to contemplate death.

blue whale 2

blue whale 2

Bloomberg describes the phenomenon and its supposed origin:

"The name apparently comes from a song by the Russian rock band Lumen. Its opening lines are, 'Why scream / When no one hears / What we're talking about?' and it features a 'huge blue whale' that 'can't break through the net.' By posting on social networks using certain hashtags or joining to certain groups, teens — usually between the ages of 10 and 14 — get spotted by 'curators,' who, after vetting the potential player, set up to 50 daily tasks leading up to the ultimate one, suicide. The tasks involve cutting oneself and taking other risks. For the last 10 days, the player needs to wake up at an appointed early morning hour, listen to music and contemplate death. Those who get cold feet and want to leave the game receive threats, often that their parents will be killed."

Yes. You read that right. It's a game that you can only win if you end your life. And in a culture where suicide is the third-leading cause of death among teens, we can't afford to turn a blind eye to this madness.

More: Is there a link between cyberbullying and suicide?

"But my kid knows better," you might say. "My child would never do that." Think again — online "pranks" have caused numerous children to take their own lives.

One 17-year-old Instagram user, @lolcamhs, posted about the insidious nature of the blue whale challenge in a post that's gotten over 101,000 views:

blue whale 3

blue whale 3

Fortunately, warnings have been showing up on various U.S. school websites and Facebook pages for several weeks now encouraging parents to pay close attention to any reference to the term "blue whale" in their children's speech or online. And Instagram created its own automatic warning that appears for anyone searching for #BlueWhaleChallenge.

Some sources, however, insist that this challenge is not for real and should be filed away under fake news.

While it may be tough to discern how much of a threat this is, the fact is that there are many, many vulnerable kids out there who could take this "challenge" seriously.

As Barbara Greenberg — specialist in adolescent psychology — told Yahoo:

"This should not be referred to as a game. Basically, what happens is that depressed kids are led to believe that they are playing a game — when in fact they are dealing with mental health issues. I am not a parent blamer, but this is further reason why parents need to monitor their kids' behavior. Depressed kids who are isolated are susceptible. Parents should monitor changes in behavior."

Many on social media have expressed horror and shock that "suicide challenges" like this exist:

blue whale 1

blue whale 1

So what can we do as parents about these disturbing social media "challenges" — real or not?
We need to be talking to our kids about suicide, as painful and difficult a subject as that is. We need to keep the lines of communication open, and ask them — without panic or judgment — what sort of upsetting social media games or challenges they're seeing online.

The American Psychological Association offers helpful guidelines for talking to kids about suicide and suicidal ideation. The toll-free suicide hotline 1-800-273-TALK (8255) provides support for anyone — whether or not you're struggling with suicidal thoughts or you know someone who is.

The Trevor Project also offers numerous resources for suicide prevention.

And if your kids are struggling with depression or thoughts of ending their own lives, many who resist help or phone hotlines might feel more comfortable texting with a trained crisis counselor at Crisis Text Line (simply text START to 741-741).

Blue whale or no blue whale, too many of our children are hurting deeply. And the more we can support them, the more able they'll be to resist the darkness that they'll invariably encounter — again and again — on the internet.

"A year ago I met the love of my life," he wrote next to a sweet black and white photo of them together that he posted to Instagram. "We both weren’t looking for a relationship at the time, but something felt right from the very first night we met. We ended up spending 6 days in a row together. The Ivanka Dress: A Liberal Mom's Dilemma

Recently, our schedule free from travel basketball, my daughter and I trekked to Macy's in downtown Brooklyn in search of a dress for her eighth-grade dance. But the coming-of-age shopping ritual took a turn toward political crisis when after wading through piles of what my daughter described as "dresses with sparkles and stuff hanging off of them and weird shapes that make you look like an old lady," we landed at a rack of classic, appealing frocks — made by none other than Ivanka Trump.

More: Dispatches from High School: Teens Talk 13 Reasons Why

Ivanka Trump dress
Image: Margaret Hetherman

Confronted with a deadline and one classy, cream-colored number that stood apart from the rest, we had to consider some tough, uncomfortable questions.

We are left-leaning gals who are learning that a functioning democracy in America is no longer a right, but rather something that we must actively fight for. My daughter saw this firsthand at the Women's March in D.C., surrounded by hundreds of thousands of others who had congregated to stand up for women. Since Trump took office, we've watched in horror as he has sought to eviscerate the EPA, roll back the Affordable Care Act and trample over immigrants' rights. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

Knowing that, could we even consider buying this dress?

I thought of the Ivanka Trump "complicit" spoof on SNL, which had aired the night before our shopping extravaganza. Can we know how much influence Ivanka actually has over policy? By virtue of remaining by her father's side, is Ivanka "complicit" in the potential downfall of the country, and if so, would we be complicit by purchasing a dress with her name on it?

More: Mom's Bold Post About Body Positivity Goes Viral

"It's not like the money is going straight to President Trump," my 13-year-old pointed out. "There are so many people who have done bad things and have relatives they still have to see because they're family... it doesn't mean that they necessarily agree with the same opinions as that person, and it's not like you should just leave your family if they don't have the same political view."

We flirted with trying on the dress, and by the time we found the fitting room, we had about 10 garments in hand — among them, the Ivanka number. A few made the cut to the next round, including the cream classic, which, admittedly, looked fabulous on my girl. The pressure was ramping up.

Futzing at racks and making zigzags across the aisles, I felt torn. Given the dysfunction in the White House, and the resultant desperation that so many of us feel, Ivanka Trump had come to represent some small glimmer of hope. Hope that reason might occasionally prevail. Hope that women and children might have found a true advocate at 1600 Pennsylvania Ave. And even though all signs seem to point to the contrary, it's hard to let go of that hope.

More: How to Save Money on Prom and Still Make Your Kid Feel Like a Million Bucks

We hold out hope because Ivanka is a mother. And because she carries herself with professionalism and grace. We can't imagine that she could truly be blind to the math on climate change when her own children and their children will have to breathe the same polluted air as everyone else. We continue to fantasize that one day, she might yank her father by the collar and shake some sense into him.

In the end, the Trump dress was a little loose on the shoulders, and I can't say that I didn't feel some relief. But we're not done — my daughter and me. It's the beginning of bigger conversations, and she is developing her own opinions and asking the right questions. As for Ivanka, whether or not she can prevent us from getting vaporized remains to be seen. I'll give her this: She had the best-looking dress on the third floor at Macy’s — but I'm glad I didn't have to buy it.

Here’s Another Reason to Get a Puppy Before Your Baby Is Born

Having a dog around while you’re pregnant could actually contribute to having a healthier baby.

“Early-life exposure to household pets has the capacity to reduce risk for overweight and allergic disease, especially following Caesarean delivery,” explain researchers at the University of Alberta.

Specifically, exposure to dogs during pregnancy and after birth help babies increase the levels of gut bacteria they produce. The higher levels are what help reduce the risk of obesity and other allergic diseases.

More: Study Shows That Women With Dogs Have Healthier Babies

The study looked at 746 infants and surveyed moms on their child’s exposure to pets during their second and third trimesters, as well as three months after giving birth.

In addition to helping babies increase their gut bacteria, dogs are also a great way to prioritize healthy living during your pregnancy.

The CDC recommends that women get 150 minutes of walking per week, which can easily break down to just a few short dog walks per day — just in case you needed another reason to justify puppy adoption this spring.

The In-Flight Electronics Ban Might Be Getting a Lot Worse

Going to new places and exploring the world is a wonderful experience for those who have the privilege of being able to travel. But flying and dealing with the hassle of airports, long plane rides and going through customs isn't fun. Like, I'm pretty sure no one out there loves being patted down every time they go through security just because their bra has a big ole underwire that sets off the body scanner.

It could be worse, though! The U.S. currently has a ban on bringing any personal electronics larger than a cellphone into the cabin of a plane on flights to or from the Middle East and North Africa, and they're considering expanding the policy to include flights to European countries.

If the electronics ban is extended to European countries, it will affect more than 390 flights a day and cost an estimated $1.1 billion in productivity. A lot of businesspeople who travel frequently work on their flights, but without their devices, that work would come to a screeching halt.

More: Another Scorpion Was Found on a United Plane & We Just Can't

There are also concerns that a European electronics ban will cost the airlines money. For instance, many companies wouldn't want their employees to check bags with laptops and other personal electronics that contain privileged information. Instead, they might decide to opt for remote meetings instead of traveling for face-to-face ones.

Honestly, I wouldn't want to check my laptop in my bag. I've seen how the baggage handlers throw suitcases around when they're loading the plane, never mind how even the largest suitcases tumble onto the baggage carousel at the end of flights. I doubt my computer would go through unscathed, but if I have to work on a trip, what's the alternative? Just canceling my travel, I guess.

Also, what if you're on a long-haul flight on an older plane that doesn't have an entertainment console? A lot of passengers would be lost — aka bored as hell, squirmy and anxious — without their laptop, iPad or Kindle. Sure, actual print books and magazines are an option, but if you're in the air for more than a couple of hours, you usually want to shake things up with various activities and forms of entertainment.

More: This Airline Is Letting Kids Fly Free This Summer

With the current Middle East and North Africa electronics ban, Emirates Airline has been letting passengers check their electronics at the gate, instead of in their checked baggage. This is a bit more convenient and safer (though still a security risk for devices containing confidential information), but it takes extra time, and it's hard to know how well such a plan could be executed across various airlines traveling around the world.

Ugh. First they took away our complimentary peanuts, and now we won't even be able to binge-watch Master of None on our flights. What's next? Uncomfortable seats that just keep getting smaller and smaller? Oh wait, that's already a thing.

Here's hoping that a solution can be found that enforces security while letting us hang onto our devices — because there are only so many books I can fit into my carry-on... and my in-flight Xanax always wears off eventually.

If Kourtney Kardashian can move on with someone young and hot, apparently so can her ex, Scott Disick.

More: Scott Disick Tried to Put a Ring on It, but Kourtney Kardashian Said No

Disick hasn't ever tried to hide his penchant for young hot models. And apparently, he has his sights set on someone new: Bella Thorne. The only question now is whether she's in this for a relationship or if she sees Disick as her ticket to getting on reality TV.

Sources spotted 33-year-old Disick and 19-year-old Thorne together having dinner at Catch LA in West Hollywood. There's not a lot of detail out there about the dinner — like whether they kept it professional or if it looked like a date — but afterward, they went together to The Nice Guy, another celeb favorite spot, and sat together for more than an hour over even more food. Sources say they then went together to the nearby Peppermint Club for live music and that they left together in Disick's car around 1:30 a.m. That's a pretty long night out for a business meeting if you ask us.

Disick and Kardashian finally pulled the plug on their on-again, off-again relationship last year, and the end of it just aired on Sunday's episode of Keeping Up with the Kardashians. The episode showed Kardashian telling Disick they were never getting back together after Disick was caught secretly flying another girl into Costa Rica to join them on their family vacation. During a heated confrontation about it, Disick told Kardashian he is "a fucked up, horrible sex addict."

Regardless of his excuse, Kardashian wasn't having it. She's also moved on — she's been spotted multiple times over the last few months hanging out with MMA fighter-turned-model Younes Bendjima.

5 Terrible Career Tips You Should Always Ignore

There’s no shortage of helpful career advice out there, from what to wear to an interview or how to pump at work. But sometimes it’s just as helpful to hear about what not to do. We all learn from our mistakes — and oftentimes, we fall into career mistakes because we took some bad advice.

Anyone who pauses to give you career advice probably has your best interests at heart, but that doesn’t mean they necessarily know what’s best for you or your professional development. If you’re questioning what someone’s telling you to do, you may be wise to listen to your instincts.

Today, we’re giving you a roundup of career advice we suggest you ignore, some of which we’ve taken and some of which we haven’t. We hope that you’ll not only get in a good laugh but will also learn to recognize that not all advice is worth following.

Let that inappropriate comment go

“At my first job out of college, there was a much older, much more senior man who made some pretty inappropriate comments. Another woman I worked with overheard him once and when he walked away she looked at me, saw my horrified face, and with a straight face, said, ‘Sometimes you will just have to deal with things like that.’ The next day she came over and apologized after being urged to do so by another male who had seen everything. Sometimes women don't get it, either!

"On another note, my mom was horrified that I took an unpaid internship in college, and she advised against it. I took it anyway, and it ended up being a great experience and led to a job offer immediately after graduation." — Anni, FairyGodBoss director of growth

Don't keep your options open

“Early in my career, I was always told that you should be very cautious about interviewing for another job outside your company because if your current manager found out you were interviewing, you would be penalized. How crazy! Later I realized that you should always be out there interviewing, networking and getting a sense of what your value in the market is. A good manager will understand and support that. And if yours doesn’t, you probably have the wrong manager.”  — Romy, FairyGodBoss president and co-founder

Ignore your gut

“When I entered law school, I was very sure it was the right thing to do, but after my first year and then my first legal internship, I started to get the feeling that practicing law was very different than studying law and learning about how law is interpreted and made — something I still find very interesting. Someone told me to ignore my doubts and just give law a chance instead of applying to non-legal jobs right out of law school. It wasn’t the greatest advice even though it sounds perfectly logical. Ultimately, I only gave my legal career six months, but I did have to spend a couple summer months indoors studying for the New York Bar exam. Sometimes you have to just follow your gut instead of what looks like it makes sense on paper.” — Georgene, FairyGodBoss CEO and co-founder

Wait it out

“The worst career advice I’ve ever gotten was to ‘be patient.’ As a female in mostly male-dominated industries, I have often found that I've been told to ‘just be patient’ for everything, from project timelines to promotions. In reality, I've found that it's in my most impatient moments that I've been able to contribute the most, progress the fastest and energize those around me to do so too!” — Karen, FairyGodBoss head of customer success

Waste time in the wrong job

“I once started at a job and very quickly realized it just wasn’t a good fit for me. I began brainstorming what my next move would be, but a lot of people told me I should wait at least a year before even considering finding a new job; they said otherwise it would look bad on my résumé. I didn’t wait a year, and I loved my next job, where I stayed for nearly five years. No one’s ever looked at my résumé and questioned why I only lasted six months in a previous position. I get that it doesn’t look good to change jobs constantly and that you always need to give a new job a chance. But if you’re feeling certain that you’ve wound up in a position that’s not good for you, don’t waste time trying to make it work. Move on to something you feel better about!” — Sam, FairyGodBoss editorial director

The New Miley Cyrus Hates 'Wrecking Ball'

Miley Cyrus apparently wishes the most memeable thing she's ever done had just not happened, and it's so disappointing.

More: Miley Cyrus Is Singing a New Tune About Love, Life & Drugs

In 2013, Cyrus' video for "Wrecking Ball" debuted featuring her sitting naked atop a giant wrecking ball, seductively licking a hammer, smashing some walls and other awesomeness. It was a really great video. Like, really great. It was visually stunning and instantly iconic.

But Cyrus is having a little bit of an image makeover lately and is hard at work rebranding herself as a folksy singer-songwriter, a pretty notable departure from "Wrecking Ball," twerking, tattoos and marijuana, the controversial things that have defined her in the last few years of her career.

More: Miley Cyrus got a big stamp of approval from Liam Hemsworth's family this Christmas

That's what she was reflecting on when she appeared on the Zach Sang Show this week and was asked to play "Marry, Fuck, Kill" with three of her hit singles. She said she'd marry "The Climb," fuck "Seven Things" and kill "Wrecking Ball."

"That's something you can't take away — swinging around naked on a wrecking ball lives forever," she said. "Once you do that, it's forever. I'm never living that down. I will always be the naked girl on a wrecking ball."

And seeing that scene where she licks the hammer just makes her cringe now.

"I just licked the sledgehammer. I should have thought how long that was going to follow me around," Cyrus said. "That's my worst nightmare, that being played at my funeral."

Of course, there could be other reasons Cyrus is ready to leave "Wrecking Ball" firmly in her past. It's been long rumored that the song was about her breakup with Liam Hemsworth, and the two are now back together, engaged again and looking to the future, not the past.

After much anticipation, photos and a trailer of Young Sheldon, aka the Big Bang Theory prequel about Sheldon Cooper, are finally here.

More: Why the TBBT Sheldon Cooper Spinoff Is Still a Bad Idea

Last November, there were rumors that the spinoff would be coming to CBS, and in March, the comedy was ordered straight to series for the 2017 – '18 TV season. On Wednesday, the first three photos and trailer from Young Sheldon were released. It took them long enough, didn't it?

For those unaware, the project will follow Sheldon growing up in East Texas and entering high school at a young age.

As for the images, they showcase a 9-year-old Sheldon (played by Big Little Lies' Iain Armitage) and his mom, Mary Cooper, played by Zoe Perry (her mom, Laurie Metcalf plays Mary in TBBT). As hesitant as we are about the prequel, the photos are super-adorable. Young Sheldon is cute as a button with his briefcase and bow tie.

Another positive is Perry. She was phenomenal during her Season 6 Scandal arc, and we can't wait to see her as the younger Mary Cooper. We have no doubt that she'll make the role just as memorable as her mother does.

More: Why Sheldon knocks three times on The Big Bang Theory is actually heartbreaking

During CBS' 2017 upfronts presentation, the network said the series has a Doogie Howser vibe. CBS even said that Young Sheldon isn't Muppet Babies, but rather more like The Wonder Years. Apparently, people are already loving the new show, because according to the network, when they tested the prequel, those who aren't even fans of Big Bang liked its spinoff. That says a lot.

We are definitely curious to see if the show will become a hit and will be just as funny as its predecessor. It's hard to say based on just photos, but they aren't turning us off by any means.

As with Perry, we also can't wait to see Armitage in action. His role as Sheldon Cooper certainly isn't anything like his character Ziggy Chapman on Big Little Lies.

We're going to have to wait a while to see him bring Sheldon to life in a full episode. So until then, we're just going to keep track of him on Instagram. He seriously knows how to use his cuteness to his advantage. Also, similar to how Sheldon knows all when it comes to comics, trains and science, Armitage is a theater buff. If you don't believe us, here's proof.

Too Much Porn Can Cause Sexual Dysfunction in Men

It seems like there's a buzzed-about new stat or study about porn every week, whether it's the idea that watching it can help you go on better dates or the fact that people in highly religious states watch it more than anyone else. The latest porn finding is pretty gloomy. Men who prefer porn and masturbation to real-life sex are likelier to experience erectile dysfunction according to research recently presented at the American Urological Association's annual meeting.

Rates of erectile dysfunction skyrocketed when porn became widely available. The first dedicated porn websites reportedly appeared in 2006, and rates of erectile dysfunction nearly doubled between 2004 and 2014 — timing that appears to be no coincidence.

The research, which aimed to find out the effects of porn on both genders, was conducted on 314 men and 71 women between the ages of 20 and 40. Interestingly, women actually had higher rates of sexual dysfunction (52 percent) whereas 27 percent of men experienced sexual problems. However, men watched porn much more than women, which is one way the doctors identified the correlation.

Experts say that internet and porn addiction have the same physiological effects as addictive drugs. Like with alcohol, nicotine or cocaine, once your body gets used to that high, it's nearly impossible to recreate with anything other than the drug it craves.

Dr. Matthew Christman, a urologist at the Naval Medical Center in San Diego, California, hypothesizes, "Internet pornography increases sensitivity to pornographic cues and decreases sensitivity to normal stimuli." In other words, once men get used to all that crazy on-screen action, sex IRL just might not do the trick for them anymore.

But before you go telling your S.O. about this research as a scare tactic to get him to stop watching all that porn, remember that porn can also have a totally healthy place in your relationship and sex life — and that starts with talking about it. As long as your male partner feels he needs to furtively get his secret porn fix, you won't get anywhere.

If you really care about keeping your partner healthy (everywhere, but especially down there) approach him and his porn-watching habits without judgment or snark and ask how you can incorporate whatever's turning him on so much on screen into sex IRL with you.

Ben Affleck Still Wants Jennifer Garner, Just in a Different Way

Can we all just take a moment to admire the incredibly great way Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner have handled their divorce?

More: Ben Affleck Is Moving On and Moving Out

We're heartbroken that they're splitting up, but their breakup has been so amicable and dignified, and they've stayed so supportive of one another from day one. They really have set the bar high for not just celeb breakups, but all breakups.

And they're still at it. In a recent interview about his Red Nose Day involvement, Affleck was asked if he'd ever want to direct a female-led film. Being the total sweetheart that he is, he turned his answer into the sweetest compliment for his ex.

"I would love to; are you kidding me?" he answered. "I think that would be great. I’ve often said that I want to direct a movie that Jennifer was in because I think she’s so great and she could do something really cool."

Unfortunately, that likely won't happen any time soon. Both Affleck and Garner are pretty devoted to raising their kids, and if they worked on the same movie, neither of them would be home with the brood.

"The problem that gets in the way is that one of us has to be looking after the kids at home," Affleck explained.

No worries, though. It's only a little over a decade before all the Affleck-Garner kids head off to college.

"Yeah! I’ve got another however many years until college," Affleck said. "We’re lockin’ it down for the next 13 years."

If Nothing Works to Treat Your Period, Endometrial Ablation Could Be an Option

For so many people who menstruate, getting their period is more than an inconvenience. It can be so heavy and painful that it becomes disruptive. While we’re nowhere close to where we need to be in terms of period pain management, there is an option to help make them lighter — a procedure called endometrial ablation.

The procedure — which takes around five minutes and is performed in a doctor’s office or surgery center — burns the lining of the uterus so there is less tissue that can bleed, explains Dr. Marc Winter, an OB-GYN at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, who has lectured widely on endometrial ablation. The success rate is around 85 percent, he adds, and most patients are back to normal activity within one day.

More: The Menstrual Equity for All Act Would Increase Access to Period Products

The procedure may be right for the patient who has heavy and/or painful periods — which may lead to anemia — provided their uterus is normal sized or only slightly enlarged with no evidence of endometrial cancer, according to Dr. Thomas Ruiz, an OB-GYN at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California. It is often considered when neither hormones nor medications work.

Ruiz explains that the procedure is done by inserting the ablation instrument into the uterine cavity via the cervical canal — meaning there are no incisions. Depending on which system the provider is using — cold therapy, hot water or radio frequency energy — the procedure takes 10 to 20 minutes and can be done using a cervical block (local anesthesia), conscious sedation or general anesthesia, he adds.

MoreWhat’s the Deal With Menstrual Suppression?

Typically, patients can return to work two to three days after the procedure, although the post-ablation discharge tends to last between two and four weeks, Ruiz says.

“This procedure is ideal for the working woman whose life is disrupted by her menstrual disorder and wants a procedure that causes minimal pain and a quick recovery,” Ruiz says.

But the procedure isn’t right for everyone. Winter warns, “it would be dangerous to get pregnant after this procedure, so you should be done having children prior to considering this.”

Ruiz agrees, saying that it is also not recommended for women who have had a pregnancy recently or those who are postmenopausal.

In order to determine whether you’re a good candidate, your gynecologist first performs a physical exam and obtains an ultrasound to check for conditions like large fibroids or adenomyosis (uterine lining in the muscle layer of the uterus), which will decrease the chances of success, Winter explains.

After the procedure, 50 to 70 percent of patients will stop having their periods altogether, and 15 to 35 percent of women will have lighter, less painful menstruation according to Ruiz.

Winter says the risks of the procedure are extremely small — 1 in 10,000 of injury to surrounding organs and that it’s a “great alternative” to hysterectomy for women who are not planning to get pregnant because it has a faster recovery time and fewer risks.

MoreTurns Out Period Syncing Is a Menstrual Myth

When complications do occur, the most common is a minor, nonpermanent injury called uterine perforation — basically, putting a small hole in the uterus, Ruiz said. In even rarer cases, there could be infection or injury to the bowel or bladder.

If you think endometrial ablation could be right for you, bring it up at your next OB-GYN appointment to learn about this and other menstrual treatment options.

Angelina Jolie Chooses First Movie Project Since Split From Brad Pitt

Since her divorce bombshell, Angelina Jolie has, understandably, stayed pretty quiet on the career front.

But she's back now, and her new project looks like one she's pouring her passion into. We can't wait to see it.

Jolie's new project is an animated film adaptation of the award-winning YA novel The Breadwinner. Jolie is serving as executive producer on the film, which is about a young girl who disguises herself as a boy in order to work to feed her family in Taliban-controlled Kabul. The first trailer just dropped, and it only upped our excitement.

This project also seems like a great outlet for Jolie, who has a passion for refugees. She's spent much of her life volunteering and lending her voice to the plights of refugees all over the world, and while The Breadwinner isn't exactly that, the story of a girl pushed to extreme lengths to survive under Taliban rule is right up Jolie's alley.
