Serena Williams 'Waiting to Learn the Sex of Her Baby' Until She Accidentally Snapchats It to the World

By now, we all know Serena Williams is expecting and, admittedly, we're curious to find out whether the elite athlete will be bringing another powerhouse tennis queen into the world. Can't you just see Auntie Venus on the court, coaching her niece?

Of course, if it turns out Williams is having a little boy, the world will likewise be just as overjoyed for the new mom. But it would seem we'll all have to wait to learn the baby's sex — including Williams!

More: Serena Williams Writes Sweet Love Note to Her Baby on the Way

Looking radiant at Monday's Met Gala in New York City, Williams spoke with the inimitable Andre Leon Talley from Vogue about she and fiance Alexis Ohanian's future bundle, saying, "We're waiting for a surprise. We call it Baby."

But, you know, fans may find out sooner rather than later if Williams' recent track record is any indication.

Before Williams officially confirmed her pregnancy and her baby bump was simply speculation, the 35-year-old tennis star accidentally let the good news go via none other than the great spoiler of secrets: Snapchat.

More: Who Is the Future Mr. Serena Williams, Anyway?

On Wednesday, April 19, the new mom took to the popular social media messenging app in a bright yellow bikini, captioning a side-profile pic, "20 weeks."

A few days later, on April 25, she opened up about the blunder during a TED conference in Vancouver. "I was on vacation, taking time for myself, and I have this thing where I've been checking my status and taking a picture every week," she explained. "I've been just saving it, but you know how social media is — you press the wrong button... and 30 minutes later, I'd missed four calls. So I picked it up and realized, 'Oh no.'"

Although she took the image down shortly after, the image was not surprisingly screen-captured, saved and disseminated for all to see.

More: Serena Williams Didn't Mean to Announce Her Pregnancy on Snapchat

In the wake of that little social media misstep, Williams confirmed to NBC News that she would, in fact, be welcoming a baby this fall. The buzz then turned to the fact that, based on Williams' Snap, she won the Australian Open in January while pregnant.

Because, badass.

Williams, who announced her engagement to Reddit co-founder Ohanian back in December, clearly couldn't be more excited about impending motherhood — no matter how the rest of the world found out.

So while we're hopeful for Williams that she will be able to keep the sex under wraps if that's what she truly wants, we also wouldn't be surprised if the gender reveal came by way of Snapchat.

Hey, it would be pretty on trend, right?

Gabourey Sidibe's New Memoir Reveals Painful Struggle with Suicidal Thoughts

As one of the stars of Fox's hit drama, Empire, Gabourey Sidibe may seem to some like she has it all. But looks can be deceiving, and Sidibe makes abundantly clear in her new memoir that she was "a mess" and that maintaining her mental health is an ongoing process.

In the sharp and unapologetic memoir, This Is Just My Face: Try Not to Stare, Sidibe reveals that she has long-struggled with bouts of bulimia and depression — the latter of which routinely devolved into suicidal thoughts.

More: Gabourey Sidibe Owns the Empire Sex Scene Haters with Perfect Response

"I found a doctor and told her everything that was wrong with me. I'd never run down the entire list before, but as I hear myself, I could sense that dealing with this on my own was definitely no longer an option. The doctor asked me if I wanted to kill myself. I said, 'Meh, not yet. But when I do, I know how I'll do it.' I wasn't afraid to die, and if there was a button I couldn't pushed to erase my existence from earth, I would have pushed it because it would have been easier and less messy than offing myself," she writes.

Soon after, Sidibe was prescribed antidepressants and began going to therapy. At this point in the memoir, the 34-year-old makes a salient point about the importance of de-stigmatizing therapy, revealing that she couldn't talk to her own mother about the thoughts she was having.

More: You Could Be a Toxic Parent and Not Even Realize It

"When I first told her I was depressed, she laughed at me. Literally," Sidibe writes. "Not because she's a terrible person, but because she thought it was a joke."

It wasn't, though, and Sidibe struggled for years with bulimia, panic attacks and suicidal thoughts due to her depression. It was only when she found the strength to go against the stigma and seek out a doctor that she found herself on the path to recovery.

Today, Sidibe is obviously doing well. She did, after all, just release a memoir and has the Empire role taking up residence currently on her resume. Still, she admits that she continues to work on maintaining her mental health.

And in doing so, she has become an advocate: raising awareness and helping to de-stigmatize therapy and other resources so relevant to addressing mental health issues.

Stephanie Rice's Journey on The Voice Should Not Have Ended Tonight

No season of The Voice is complete without a talented and charming hipster artist. That's exactly what Stephanie Rice delivered for Season 12, and while we're not necessarily surprised to see her go, we aren't happy about it. If people voted exclusively on talent, we have the feeling she'd last a lot longer. Alas, she's done, while weaker, less intriguing artists get to stick around another week.

More: There's No Way The Voice's Brennley Brown and Aaliyah Rose Are Under 16

Rice not making the Top 10 seems unbelievable in light of last night's performance. She put her own unique spin on "Behind Blue Eyes," and was praised endlessly by the judges. The most bittersweet feedback was definitely from Alicia Keys, who claimed that Rice was just getting started. Now, the meaning may have referred more to the music industry in general, but at the time, we already suspected that Rice's tenure on The Voice might not last as long as we wanted.

Behind Blue Eyes Stephanie Rice

Behind Blue Eyes Stephanie Rice

Rice fights to be her true self on The Voice, and her authenticity has not gone unnoticed. It's one of the things we love most about her, but also one of the top reasons she was sacrificed so soon. Ultimately, she's just not going to appeal to as many listeners as some of the equally talented but perhaps more generic singers of Season 12.

More: Stephanie Rice's Performance on The Voice Was Magical

Our sadness about Rice's departure should not be confused with anger about Mark Isaiah winning the Instant Save. He fought valiantly for the second week in a row, and his performance tonight was definitely stronger than Rice's. Although Rice sounded lovely, nerves definitely got the best of her in this difficult situation. Her voice wavered more than usual as she performed "Issues," and she just didn't sound as confident as we'd like. But she shouldn't have been put in the position to sing for her life in the first place.

If nothing else, The Voice should provide a nice kick-start for Rice, who deserves to be heard and to have a chance in the music industry. Now that she's gained valuable exposure, she can continue to build a name for herself, while still holding true to the quirky style that her fans adore. We're expecting great things from Rice, and we know she'll deliver!

Why We Should Be Talking About Serena Joy's Storyline in The Handmaid's Tale

$

The Handmaid's Tale is my new favorite TV obsession.

Yes, it's hard to watch. It deals with some heavy and controversial topics, to be sure. But it speaks to such a truth for women that it's hard not to relate on every level to every character in this series.

More: How Not to Lose Your Mind When Consuming Media During the Trump administration

While Offred, the lead of the show, is clearly our heroine in the first three episodes, I have found myself undeniably identifying with Serena Joy the more episodes I see. Her character strikes a deep chord because initially, she seems like the villain of the show. She isn't nice to Offred. She is clearly threatened by Offred. She seems to have no semblance of womanly empathy for Offred or any of the handmaids. But we quickly discover all of this is wrong. Serena Joy, just like Offred, is a prisoner in Gilead. She is a prisoner in her body because she can't bear children. She is a prisoner to her husband because her value in this new society seems to have been compromised. And she is a prisoner to societal expectations because she must seemingly suffer through all of this silently on her own. She has been hardened by the turmoil of the new society, and it's a society that she helped to build.

Actress Yvonne Strahovski, who plays Serena Joy, is clearly a master. We can see all of these deep and personal emotions play in Serena Joy's eyes in a simple camera pan. We see her struggle with her desire for more when she lashes out at Offred in the most recent episode. It's not anger at Offred, but anger at things she can't control. Anger in the subconscious regret she harbors.

In a recent interview with Cosmopolitan, Strahovski explained, "There’s a duality of Serena Joy. We see in flashbacks [in Episode 6] who she was prior to Gilead, and I think there was an essence of her that was pure and good, and her intention was really to contribute to saving the world, where birthrates have fallen and children are a rarity and the human race will no longer exist if we don’t fix this now. And I do think that she was truly, joyously trying to inspire women to follow their biological destinies and find power in that — initially. Then you go through this whole journey, and something went wrong — well, not something; a whole lot of things went wrong. Now we find Serena Joy living in this cage that she spent a lot of time constructing herself; now she’s realizing it wasn’t the best decision. Actually, I take that back: She’s not realizing it wasn’t the best decision, she’s feeling it wasn’t the best decision. I don’t think she’s consciously ready to admit to herself that it wasn’t the best decision."

Of course, that doesn't make her decision to villainize Offred OK. I'm not trying to excuse some of the poor decisions Serena Joy has made. But like all women, she complicated, and in her complication we see truth. It's a truth we can all sympathize with.

More: Poussey's Back! 10 Things to Know About Samira Wiley's New Show, The Handmaid's Tale

To me, Serena Joy is the true encapsulation of the turmoil in The Handmaid's Tale. Not to say she has it worse than Offred, just that Offred has a more worldly view because of how she was raised. Serena Joy's vision of the world is clouded, and I think after Episode 3, we may have witnessed Serena Joy's perfect world truly snapping as she realizes the Gilead she wanted does not exist.

But that seems to be what this new society does to women. It breaks them.

The show challenges those of us watching by making us wonder if we would break in the same way. If Serena Joy would band with Offred instead of making an enemy out of her, Offred would probably willingly try to conceive a baby for her.

But watching Serena Joy's storyline unfold, I can't say I would behave any differently. In a society like this, as Ofglen said, the government is very good at making the women turn against one another and distrust one another just as in today's society we all seem to be so quick to judge. So how do we fight? How do we take this series and rebel against the ideas that would lead to an America that no longer stands for freedom?

In my opinion, we turn against the demonization of one another. Because if the women in The Handmaid's Tale could find a way to connect and see their similarities, they could recreate the government into some semblance of a democracy.

I hope we see that understanding between Offred and Serena Joy develop and deepen as the series continues. If they band together, well, look out, Gilead.

Is This Melania Trump's Cry for Help?

Imagine her life right now. She's not big on media attention. She wants to live in New York City, not Washington, D.C. She's forced to watch her husband bumble his way through a presidency that he apparently thought was going to be easy (???). Things probably aren't, like, great for Melania Trump right now.

But what can she even do? This is her life now, whether she signed up for it or not (spoiler alert: The Donald seems to just do whatever the fuck he wants when he wants, so she probably didn't).

Here's what she can do: She can passive-aggressively sub-tweet her husband, showing everyone who's paying close attention how she really feels about this whole being-married-to-Donald-Trump situation. Turns out, the president isn't the only one who can use social media as a weapon.

Melania Trump's personal Twitter account has stayed quiet for a few months — the last time she tweeted from it was right around the time of the election. But careful observers saw that on Tuesday evening, for about 45 minutes, the account had liked two tweets. One was her own tweet from May of 2012, saying, "Hello Twitter!" The other was from Andy Ostroy, reading, "Seems the only #Wall @realDonaldTrump's built is the one between him and @FLOTUS #Melania," and including the now infamous GIF of the first lady smiling widely before letting her face fall the second her husband turns his back on her.

Should We Confront Our Young Son About Watching Internet Porn?

Welcome to Survivor in which author Catherine Newman tries to answer your questions about adolescents and why they’re like that — and how to love them despite everything.

Have a question for Newman? Send it to her here.

Our middle-school son has been doing some online searching lately of a seemingly puberty-driven nature. "Boobs" was the first search term that caught our eye. We're conflicted about how to handle this. We most definitely don't want to shame him in any way. We do want to be clear that if he searches he will easily find things that are disturbing and upsetting. We're struggling to find a way to honor his very normal interest in these things. We want him to know it's totally ok to feel this stuff and that we aren't mad or upset or anything other than wanting to support him as he grows.

You are so lovely, and he’s so lucky. Yes to wanting to honor his very normal interest. Yes to wanting him to know that he’s completely OK. Yes to wanting to support him as he grows. Our 17-year-old once confessed to us as a little kid that he wished he could see more naked people — and we were like, “You and everybody else, honey. Everybody wishes that.” It was so nice to get to relieve him so easily of a guilty secret.

He then had the great idea of gathering up all the individual nude photographs — “You know how there’s one in every coffee table book?” — into a single book of just naked-people photographs. (We did not have the heart to tell him that this was already an often-revolting billion-dollar industry.) And I only mention this here because talking with my kids about your question, we were realizing that when it comes to sex, what is sanctioned for young people is educational material. But there’s not much in the way of pictures to look at for pleasure or curiosity. “Ugh,” my 17-year-old said, “I once looked at a dot-to-dot book in a gag-gift store. It was called Lesbian Sex, and I actually tried to connect some of the pictures in my head just because that was the most graphic thing I’d ever gotten to look at.” Poor kid.

So what can we do? I have been tempted for years to start a website called Gentle Porn for Teenagers. Because one sad thing about the world we live in is the fact of internet porn — how relentlessly ungentle and unrealistic it is. It makes me actually nostalgic for the 1970s Playboy magazines of our own childhood, which now feel so wholesome in retrospect. Just boobs and airbrushed nipples and nice, neat triangles of pubic hair. Those were the days! Now everything is bald and oily and there are two cocks for every hole and cum in your face and everyone is screaming, clawing their 10-inch fingernails down everyone else’s back. It’s not the way we want our kids to learn about sex because a) The images are often degrading to women; b) The industry is often degrading to women; c) That’s not what bodies or sex are actually like; and d) Find me a real-life woman who has a real-life orgasm because someone fucks her up the ass for 15 seconds. Please. We want our children — boys and girls both — to learn pleasure, respect and mutuality. We want them to approach sex with curiosity and courage: “What feels good to you? Tell me. Show me.”

But I am getting ahead of myself! And certainly ahead of your son, who is merely boob-curious, I realize.

My kids feel that you should not confront him directly — “Oh my God,” the 17-year-old said, “He’ll have, like, total shame PTSD,” — but that you should casually leave some books around that he might like to look at. They’re imagining sex books for teens or even The Joy of Sex. But another option is the artsy Taschen Big Book of photography series: collections called Breasts, Penises, and Butts that pretty much are just what they sound like. Other art books might be good too — histories of the nude, say, which you might be able to get from the library, even! “Just leave them around,” the 14-year-old said. “He’ll find them. I promise.” (Of course, this might seem like overkill for your son, who doubtless springs a boner simply because someone’s dressing a nude mannequin in a shop window. You will have to use your judgment on this.)

“But don’t they kind of have to talk to their kid about how porn is different from real sex?” I asked my own. “I mean, chances are he’s already seen something that represents sexuality in an unrealistic or degrading way.” Maybe he’ll wish he could unsee it, but he can’t. My kids admitted that this was likely the case and recommended that you frame this issue carefully so as to not embarrass him: “You know what I’ve been thinking about? You’re getting to an age when some of your friends are going to be looking at stuff on the internet. Which is totally normal. But there are some things I want to say to you about that kind of thing…” What those things are, of course, is up to you.

(One last piece of advice? Pretend you’re writing an advice column for parents of teens and ask them this question. You’ll be able to say everything you’ll wish you’ve ever said to your kids about porn, because it will be in the service of your work and of helping someone else with an issue. Nobody will even feel lectured or mortified! In fact, after you’re done talking, you’ll get a bunch of sex books from the library, and everyone will be really happy.)

This Pill Could Have the Same Benefits as Exercise

You may want to sit down for this: scientists are in the midst of developing a pill that could have some of the benefits of exercise, potentially boosting athletic endurance by 70 percent.

No, this isn’t just for people who hate going to the gym. It’s primarily for those with limited mobility, like the elderly, obese or disabled, who may not be able to build strength and endurance through traditional forms of exercise.

More: "Napercise" Sleeping Classes for Adults is 2017's Latest "Fitness" Trend

Scientists at the Salk Institute have discovered how to fully activate a gene pathway through a chemical compound that mimics the benefits of exercise, including increased fat-burning and stamina. So far, this research has only been done on mice, but it looks promising.

In addition to those with limited mobility, the breakthrough may also help people with heart conditions, pulmonary disease, Type 2 diabetes and other health conditions that would benefit from increasing endurance through medication.

"It's well known that people can improve their aerobic endurance through training," senior author Ronald Evans, Howard Hughes Medical Institute investigator and holder of Salk's March of Dimes Chair in Molecular and Developmental Biology said in a press release. "The question for us was: how does endurance work? And if we really understand the science, can we replace training with a drug?"

MoreHot Baths Benefit Your Body Like Exercise Does

Here’s how the drug works: We know that endurance means that we’re able to do an aerobic activity over a prolonged period of time. We also know that’s a good thing because as people become more physically fit, their muscles shift from burning carbohydrates to burning fat. Up until now, researchers assumed that endurance is a function of the body’s increasing ability to burn fat, but weren’t entirely sure why this was the case.

The Salk Institute team found that a chemical compound was able to act similarly to a gene that allowed the mice to run long distances and be resistant to weight gain and tested it on other mice.

Turns out, it worked. The mice given the drug could run around 70 percent longer than those in the control group.

Essentially, the drug could make the body burn fat faster while at the same time burning sugar more slowly. The upshot is that, on the drug, the drop in blood sugar level that is responsible for the feeling of hitting the wall happens much later than normal. Muscles can burn either sugar or fat, but the brain prefers sugar — this is why runners who "hit the wall" experience both physical and mental fatigue when they use up their supply of glucose.

MoreYoga Class Dropout Tries Again With Hilaria Baldwin

So far, the trials on this drug have only been conducted on mice, but the Salk Institute’s press release said that pharmaceutical companies are interested in using the research to develop clinical trials for humans with the goal being therapeutic applications for people who are obese and/or have Type 2 diabetes.

How to Pack the Perfect Traveling Date Night Kit

$

Life is busy, no? Adulting comes with all kinds of responsibilities that pull you in what seems like a million different directions, making it hard to imagine running a brush through your hair some days — much less squeezing in a romantic night out with your significant other.

The thing is, though, you deserve date night, and so does your S.O. Life is hectic, yes, but it's also meant for living!

Of course, just because you should be enjoying quality time with your love on the regular doesn't mean you magically have tons of time to plan an elaborate date night (really, does anyone?). And when date night does finally arrive, you want to squeeze the most out of every minute... and not waste what could be amazing moments preoccupied with planning and other minutiae.

So you know what you need? A no-muss, no-fuss traveling date night kit, and we're here to show you how to pack the perfect one.

Supplies:

  • A city map
  • A speaker and music
  • A HORMEL GATHERINGS® Party Tray
  • Champagne and portable flutes
  • A sweet treat
  • Napkins or a handkerchief
  • A cozy blanket
  • A camera
  • A box or bag
  • Tea lights

Directions:

Step 1

Before you can pack your kit, you'll need to get the prep work out of the way. First up? Making special use of your city map. Start by thinking of special places around the city you want to visit during your date night. These can be places that hold some special significance for you as a couple (e.g., the movie theater where you had your first date) or simply places you've been dying to try together. Once you've settled on an achievable number of spots for one night, mark them on your map.

Image: Nick Ferrari/SheKnows

Step 2

No good date night would be complete without a soundtrack to set the mood. Grab your music player — or even your smartphone — and create a playlist you know your S.O. will love. You can stream it during the picnic portion of your date to really amp up the romance.

Step 3

Speaking of the picnic, now that you've knocked out the map and the music, it's time to turn your attention to what's on the menu. A prearranged platter takes the guesswork out of picking out the perfect food for your big night — HORMEL GATHERINGS® party trays come in all sorts of sophisticated pairings, such as Italian dry salami and fresh Asiago cheese with a mix of dried fruit and nuts or crafted salami with cheddar cheese paired with butter crackers.

Naturally, you'll want to grab some sort of bubbly for the night, whether it be Champagne or sparkling cider. And finally, toss in a sweet treat to cap off your culinary fare. Chocolate-covered strawberries are a classic choice, but if you're worried about melting, you could always pick up a bag or box of your S.O.'s favorite candy.

Just don't forget portable Champagne flutes and napkins for your noshing.

Image: Nick Ferrari/SheKnows

Step 4

You'll want to capture the inevitably amazing memories you're going to have, so grab your camera and any necessary gear: memory cards, tripod, etc. Double-check your battery life a few days before your date in case you need time to charge.

Step 5

Designate a box or bag to be your portable date night kit container. Then, start stocking it! One by one, pack your HORMEL GATHERINGS® party tray, your Champagne and portable flutes, napkins or a handkerchief, a cozy blanket, your camera and gear, tea lights, speaker and music-streaming device of choice, your newly marked-up city map and a sweet treat.

Image: Nick Ferrari/SheKnows

Step 6

Now that your date night kit is packed and ready to be put into action, mark down the date on your calendar, call a babysitter if you need one and ask your S.O. to join you for a special evening.

Once on your date, pull out your city map and make sure to stop at each spot you marked to take a picture together. One of these spots will undoubtedly lend itself well to a romantic picnic by tea lights, which is your cue to break out the bubbly, HORMEL GATHERINGS® party tray and sweet treat. Cozy up to your S.O., wrap the blanket around the two of you and then use your speaker and music player to make the night even more memorable with music.

Twin Sisters Deliver Baby Boys Hours Apart at the Same Hospital

There are two new first cousins in the world who are getting a lot of attention — and they'd better get used to being dressed like twins.

Kim Abraham and Danielle Grant of New Jersey thought it was pretty crazy that they both had the same due date of April 22 — or maybe not so crazy considering Abraham and Grant are fraternal twins who are used to doing things together.

The matching due dates were a "total coincidence," Grant said. “We both wanted babies, but we didn’t think we would get pregnant the same time. This was not planned."

But when April 22 passed and both sisters were still mighty pregnant, they decided to induce on the same day: April 30. Twinsie powers, activate!

Each gave birth to a boy (we totally saw that coming). Grant (who also has a 2-year-old daughter) delivered Roman at 11:42 a.m.; Abraham delivered Aaron at 3:21 p.m. Both were born at the same hospital, New Jersey's Ocean Medical Center. We're betting the little cousins (like their mothers) will spend a lifetime telling people who arrived first.

Pregnant Twins

The sisters are over the moon and can't wait for the cousins to grow up together. Roman and Aaron, may you have the patience of saints and a natural fondness for each other, because there are a lot of holiday photo shoots in your future — we can feel it.

“We’ll dress them in the same outfit,” Grant said. “We were dressed alike but in different colors growing up, so we’re going to torture them like that too.” Aw, nothing like torturing your own children the way your parents tortured you growing up.

In case you're a math geek, Olga Malpica Proctor, associate mathematics professor at Brookdale Community College, told the Asbury Park Press that the odds of twin sisters giving birth on the same day are roughly the same as your odds of getting struck by lightning — only 8 in 100,000. (Really? That actually seems a little worrisome for lightning strikes.)

The odds that both babes would turn out to be boys? Just 4 in 100,000.

We're thinking this family should start playing the lottery.

We can't lie. We're totally missing Barack and Michelle Obama. But we're also missing Sasha and Malia — who are maybe the most normal, chill teens ever to reside in the White House.

Want to know how the two former first daughters spent that final night in the White House? Aw, come on; you know you're curious.

The two sisters (15 and 18) celebrated their last night as presidential daughters with a slumber party with eight friends. Yup, no fancy stuff for Sasha and Malia. They opted for a menu of chicken nuggets and pizza. What's not to love?

More: Malia and Sasha: A slideshow, because we watched them grow up (sniff)

Can you imagine being one of the eight girls invited to a White House sleepover? (Can they use that on their college applications?)

Michelle Obama (who seems as relatable and chill as her offspring) shared her wry reaction to their last-night plans:

"They had a sleepover because of course on Inauguration Day, because my girls are so normal, they're like, 'Well, eight girls are gonna be sleeping here because it's our last time, and we want pizza and we want nuggets.' And it's like, really?"

More: The Obamas visit (adorably) the new home of Malia and Sasha's swing set

Yes, really. Kudos to the Obamas for raising such amazingly normal girls in an extraordinarily abnormal situation — we can't wait to see what Sasha and Malia do in the world. Even if they graduate to gastropubs and locavore cuisine, we'll fondly remember their pizza and chicken nugget days.

This Essential Food Is Being Pulled From Shelves In Canada

Oh, Canada, land of poutine, Tim Horton's, Nanaimo bars and sadly, not Skippy peanut butter — anymore, at least. Skippy peanut butter was recently acquired by Hormel, and the company is pulling the product from Canadian shelves, causing a major outcry from stricken peanut butter consumers.

Citing the cost of distribution (Canada is huge, but they have a population of just 36 million, whereas, say, just the state of California has a population of 39 million), as well as the cost of the required French product labels, the company has withdrawn from the country, and people are. Not. Happy.

Apparently, people are stockpiling the Skippy they can still find on clearance shelves around the country and rationing out their peanut butter so it lasts as long as possible. Check out the frenzied Tweets below.

Why can't Canadians just buy Skippy online? Well, it's actually pretty expensive to do that — around $10 for a single jar — and the American version of Skippy has 1 to 3 grams of added sugar that makes it taste entirely different than the Canadian recipe. (Hey! Why is ours less healthy?!)

While many are mourning the loss of the iconic brand, there are some who couldn't be happier to see it go.

Brad Pitt Paints a Very Bleak Picture in Rare Interview About His Divorce

I know that there are two sides to every story, and I won't attempt to absolve him of any part he played in his divorce from Angelina Jolie, but man, Brad Pitt sounds like he is a very sad man right now.

More: Brad Pitt Is Not Looking for His Next Missus

Pitt recently opened up to GQ about his divorce and the life he now leads. As he balances work, a split household, and the well-being of his children, Pitt paints a very bleak picture for readers. When asked what his life has been like since September (when news broke of his divorce from Jolie, his second wife), Pitt's answer really makes you feel for him.

GQ Brad Pitt 2017 Tweet

GQ Brad Pitt 2017 Tweet

"It was too sad to be here at first, so I went and stayed on a friend's floor, a little bungalow in Santa Monica," he told GQ. "I crashed over here a little bit, my friend [David] Fincher lives right here. He's always going to have an open door for me, and I was doing a lot of stuff on the Westside, so I stayed at my friend's house on the floor for a month and a half." This revelation of his rather lonely life in the wake of his divorce really makes you feel for him.

More: Brad Pitt Can't Catch a Break From Constant Relationship Rumors

Pitt also opened up about quitting drinking and smoking weed, ostensibly in an attempt to clean up his act and perhaps parent more effectively now that he is a single father. He also elaborated on the fact that he and Jolie are keeping their divorce out of the courts for the sake of their children. "I just refuse. And fortunately my partner in this agrees. It's just very, very jarring for the kids, to suddenly have their family ripped apart. If anyone can make sense of it, we have to with great care and delicacy, building everything around that," he stated.

More: Angelina Jolie Stays Strong While Discussing Her Divorce From Brad Pitt

For Pitt, the main things is that he cares for his children during this difficult time, because he comes from a family where pain (both emotional and physical) was never discussed. He wants to change that. "[I put] family first. [...] Kids are so delicate. They absorb everything. They need to have their hand held and things explained. They need to be listened to. When I get in that busy work mode, I'm not hearing. I want to be better at that."

Perhaps the most powerful quote is one that indicates the fine line Pitt is walking between embracing the pain of this stage in his life while embracing the goodness that can be gleaned from it. "For me every misstep has been a step toward epiphany, understanding, some kind of joy. Yeah, the avoidance of pain is a real mistake. It's the real missing out on life. It's those very things that shape us, those very things that offer growth, that make the world a better place, oddly enough, ironically. That make us better."

Pitt's interview with GQ is an incredibly hefty one. He opens up and explains his life in great detail, but these little details are perhaps the most heartbreaking.

How Big Sexy Hair’s Powder Play Gives Flat Hair Volume and Texture

I'll get right to it: My hair is generally flat and limp and thin and lifeless and terrible. It air-dries into a stringy, straight-over-here-but-wavy-other-there mess that no cream or balm or low chignon can fix, and when left to its own devices, it’ll mat itself to the crown of my head and cowlick toward the front. Fun!

More: Apple Cider Vinegar Gave Me the Shiniest Hair Ever

Adding to the terribleness of it all is the fact that I have a long face. If my hair falls apathetically alongside it, it looks almost comically long. If that sounds like a first-world problem, it’s because it is — but it’s enough to make me invest half my annual salary in volumizing shampoos, teaser combs and thickening sprays.

But there’s one product — my desert island product, if you will — that I’m literally never without. I carry it in my purse alongside my wallet and keys, and it travels with me next to my sunscreen and mascara when I’m going out of town: Big Sexy Hair’s Powder Play. Anyone who knows me probably associates me with the tiny red bottle if only because I recommend it to anyone who’ll listen. StyleCaster’s beauty editor Chloe once described my obsession with it as something she “genuinely believes [I] would run into a burning building filled with sharks to save” — and it’s true.

Big sexy hair

In short, Powder Play is a texturizing powder that lends natural-looking grit and volume to your hair. Once my hair’s dry, I like to sprinkle some into the palm of my hand, flip my head over, zhoosh it into the crown of my head and flip back over to see noticeably thicker, sexier hair. If I’m putting a curl in my hair, I’ll run a little bit through my mid-lengths too — it gives my limp strands enough grip to hold onto the curl without the crunch that a hairspray or beach spray might leave behind. It leaves my hair more matte than shiny — but that’s my personal preference.

For anyone who prefers a less gritty texture, the brand just came out with a new iteration called Powder Play Lite, which diffuses into a cloud-like puff from a pump rather than a shaker. It still relies on silica silylate for volume, but it also has acai berry pulp oil and passion fruit seed for a slightly softer, more touchable finish. It’s similarly priced and is great for someone who wants the hold but can’t rule out the possibility of someone running their hands through their hair. (My boyfriend wouldn’t dare.)

TWD 's Josh McDermitt Quits Social Media After Receiving Death Threats

News has emerged from The Walking Dead fandom that will make you want to grab some nincompoops and shake 'em by the neck. Rumor has it that The Walking Dead's Josh McDermitt felt forced to quit social media this week due to the extreme vitriol being slung in his direction — including numerous death threats.

And honest to God, you guys, I don't even know where to start with this one. But let's give it a shot anyway, eh?

More: The Walking Dead Cast Has Zero Chill Over [SPOILER]'s Death

First and foremost, we apparently need to state the obvious. Eugene, the character everyone is hating on right now for betraying Rick's crew, is fictional. He only exists in Robert Kirkman's graphic comic series and on the hit AMC series, The Walking Dead. Eugene is relegated to those spheres of existence.

If you run into a man with an abnormally high IQ walking around town sporting a mullet and toting a jar of pickles, you may have discovered a doppelgänger (or crossed the space-time continuum). But it most certainly won't be Eugene.

Why? Because Eugene is not real.

Josh McDermitt, on the other hand, is a very real person who just so happens to bring Eugene to life on screen. While it's clearly a testament to his incredible talent that he plays the part convincingly enough to make people believe he actually is Eugene, that is likely of little consolation when he's being trolled nonstop on social media.

In a kind of brutally sad interview clip on the subject, McDermitt opened up about the issue, telling these overzealous fans, "Don't be an asshole."

What sucks about this — aside from the readily apparent fact that McDermitt isn't getting the respect he deserves as a human being — is the fact that McDermitt is one of the chillest fucking people IRL. Anyone who sticks around after the show to watch The Talking Dead or who has met McDermitt at fan events knows how hilarious and likable he is.

Thankfully, Jeffrey Dean Morgan (aka The Walking Dead's main villain, Negan) seems to be right in his assertion, "Ninety-nine percent of fans of The Walking Dead are some of the coolest people," as supporters are coming out on social media in full force to defend McDermitt.

More: An Ode to TWD's Negan — Because He's Not the Worst Villain on TV

Using the hashtags #WeLoveJoshMcdermitt and #ComeBackJosh, the outspoken majority are doing their part to chase the rotten 1 percent of bad-apple fans back into hiding (behind their keyboards, natch).

So, if you're a true Walking Dead follower who is lucid enough to know the difference between a fictional TV character and the actor who plays him, show McDermitt some love, y'all. As for those of you who feel the need to harass actors online for sport, well, get bent.

Instagramming Your Food Could Help You Eat Healthier

Many of us get the urge to whip out our phones at the table when we're about to dig into an especially epic pasta dish or amazing cheese board (possibly to the groans or eye rolls of our dining companions). But it turns out that posting food photos to social media platforms like Instagram could have a real health benefit. It might help you make better-for-you eating decisions according to a recent study by researchers at the University of Washington.

The researchers discovered that for many people on a diet, social media works as a form of food diary in the way you might use online support groups or apps like LoseIt or MyFitnessPal. They interviewed 16 people who often posted photos of what they ate on Instagram using hashtags like #FoodDiary or #FoodJournal.

The scientists found that logging meals on Instagram kept people honest, but also was a way for their friends and social media followers to offer encouragement to keep at it with the healthy choices. And unlike diet tracking apps, you can’t underestimate portion size or ingredients because it’s right there in front of you.

More12 Products the Kardashians have shamelessly endorsed on Instagram

Sure, a picture speaks volumes, but still, can't people self-edit and choose the story they want to tell? In other words, isn't it likely that plenty of us just don't post or tag those photos that we don’t want to be accountable for just like in any other food diary?

Yes, say the researchers, but we'll still know what we're doing. "When you only have one data point for a pizza or donut, it's easy to rationalize that away as a special occasion," senior study author Sean Munson, assistant professor of human-centered design and engineering at the University of Washington, told Science Daily. "But when you see a whole tiled grid of them, you have to say to yourself, 'Wait, I don't actually have that many special days.'"

Accountability is key for making healthy life choices. Our plans to eat better or drink less may go a lot better if supportive friends, family and co-workers are on our side. "Social influences can be very helpful in accountability of food intake," says Stephanie Greenspan, a registered dietitian practicing in Bergen County, New Jersey. "Any format in which an individual can make eating more mindful is useful in making healthy selections, whether it's through support groups in person, or receiving that support from a social media forum."

But maybe it's more than that. Does cooking and taking photos of the resulting meal give us a healthy and imaginative outlet in our stressed, busy lives? "There's a lot of research that connects creative expression with well-being," says Rebecca Lewis, in-house dietitian at HelloFresh. "When we're stressed, we need a fun outlet to express ourselves and release tension. Cooking allows expression of openness and curiosity about ingredients, recipes, and new cooking techniques — which are important components when we're making healthy lifestyle changes."

Of course, psychologically, we want to project the best versions of ourselves. "Posting on social media provides an outlet for feelings of approval to be communicated," says Lewis. "In turn, this keeps home cooks more motivated to keep cooking at home." So, unless your friends and followers are going to give you thumbs-ups, likes and encouraging comments in return for your photo of that gorgeous salad you're about to scarf, this food-logging technique may not be for you.

No, You Probably Don't Have a Stomach Ache

$

If someone isn’t feeling well and you ask what’s wrong, there’s a good chance they’ll say their stomach hurts. But really, there’s a good chance that their discomfort is coming from somewhere else.

According to Dr. Kevin Ashby, a gastroenterologist at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, people often refer to their abdominal region as their stomach, when in fact, the stomach makes up only part of the abdomen.

So why does this happen? Most people aren’t educated in anatomy, he said, so it has become conventional to refer to the entire abdomen as "the stomach."

More17 Years After Today Colonoscopy, Katie Couric Still Inspires Screenings

For those who need a quick anatomy refresher, the stomach is actually located in the area just left of the mid-upper abdomen, with part just under the rib cage, Dr. Ashkan Farhadi, a gastroenterologist at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California explained.

But what about all the other types of pain and discomforted lumped into the “stomach ache” category? Here’s a quick breakdown of some of the other possibilities, which could come in handy the next time your doctor asks where it hurts.

Location is key

When you see a doctor about abdominal pain, he or she will a generally ask if the pain is located above or below the belly button and if it is on the right or left side in order to get an idea of the cause, Ashby said. There are other organs within the abdomen, including the liver, pancreas, spleen, small intestine and large intestine, so explaining both the location and the type of abdominal pain that the patient is having helps the doctor to figure out which organ may be causing the symptom.

There are many, many possible causes of abdominal pain, ranging from the common (irritable bowel syndrome, for instance) to very rare causes such as obstruction of the small intestine from a polyp (growth),” Ashby said. Other causes of abdominal pain include peptic ulcer disease, gallbladder disease, poor blood flow to the intestine and inflammatory bowel disease.

The abdominal cavity is filled with visceral organs — internal organs of the body within the chest and the abdomen — such as the liver, pancreas, stomach or intestines, Farhadi explained.

MoreBehind the Alarming Rise in Colon Cancer Diagnoses in Gen Xers and Millennials

“Often, when we use the word ‘visceral,’ we mean it is felt ‘down deep’ or is a ‘feeling in the gut,’” he said. “Any damage or issues with the visceral organs within the abdominal cavity are being felt as an abdominal pain.”

But there are occasional cases were visceral pain in one area translates to a problem in a different part of the body. For example, a gallbladder disease may be felt in the left shoulder.

On the other hand, the pain from several visceral organs within the abdominal cavity may be felt at the same region of the abdomen, Farhadi said. For example, the pain from the stomach, lower esophagus, upper intestine, liver, pancreas, gallbladder or liver may all be felt at the mid-upper abdomen while pain of the female reproductive organ, urinary bladder, colon and appendix may all be felt in the mid-lower area of the abdomen.

Types of pain

The types of pain that people experience can vary from patient to patient, but often the pain quality will give the physician a clue as to what is causing the pain.

Here are a few examples of what some types of pain mean from Farhadi (but these should, by no means, be used for self-diagnosis):

Ulcer disease: typically causes a gnawing or burning pain in the mid upper abdomen.

Irritable bowel syndrome: typically causes a crampy-type pain in the lower abdomen.

Gastrointestinal organs: typically intermittent pain and associated with food intake or bowel movement.

Pancreas: typically constant and would radiate to back.

Gallbladder: could occur after meals in the right upper corner or mid-upper area of the abdomen and would typically radiate to the right side of the abdomen.

Urinary bladder: usually in the mid-lower part of the abdomen and can radiate to both sides of the abdomen.

Urinary tract: usually associated with urination or other urinary symptoms such as frequent urination.

Appendicitis: starts as a vague pain at the center of the abdomen, but later it localizes itself as a sharp pain at the right lower corner of the abdomen that aggravates with cough or body movement.

It’s important to note, however, that not all abdominal pain is actually due to an abdominal source, Ashby said. In some rare cases, ovarian or testicular disease, or even rheumatologic conditions such as lupus or vasculitis, can cause abdominal pain.

More39 and Pregnant... With Colon Cancer

Do not self-diagnose

While these examples are general illustrations of a few causes of abdominal pain, it is important not to diagnose yourself, Ashby stresses. If something in that general area doesn’t feel right, go see your doctor right away.

There's just something really cool about meeting a favorite celebrity. We see them on screen. We look up to them so much. Seeing them in person is a once-in-a-lifetime chance. No one knows that better than Amy Schumer's dad, Gordon Schumer.

Gordon, who has multiple sclerosis, obviously still wished he could meet Hawn in person. Amy just made that happen and, naturally, captured the whole thing on video.

"Who are you about to meet?" Amy asks as Gordon dabs at his eyes with a tissue.

"Am I about to meet Goldie?" he sobs.

Amy jokes, "Play it cool," but it's pretty clear that's not going to happen. He stammers something about being unable to be cool, and that's the moment when Hawn walks into the room.

Why the Internet Is Losing It Over This Teen's DIY Prom Dress

Get ready to do a collective slow clap for Shami Oshun, the 17-year-old who charmed Twitter — and then the whole internet — by documenting her last-minute scramble to make her own prom dress.

This budding fashion designer wasn't so sure about prom, but at the last minute she decided to go. And we do mean last minute: Oshun had to figure out what to wear the night before the event.

This challenge would have been pretty daunting for any Project Runway designer (or Vera Wang or Zac Posen, for that matter). But Oshun remained pretty unfazed — although she admitted the time crunch was a little stressful.

“I didn’t really have an idea of what the dress was going to look like. I was worried it wasn’t going to be finished," Oshun told BuzzFeed.

With a bunch of purple tulle she'd scored for $15, Oshun faced the challenge head-on. She live-tweeted the entire process, never expecting the internet would fall in love with her.

We're not surprised — who wouldn't be proud of such an amazing young woman?

Oshun's mom, Marlese Carroll, loved what her daughter did. “It was really pretty and different," she said. "She always comes up with something unique."

We're betting Carroll won't let us adopt her daughter, but still, it's worth asking, maybe, right?

Fixer Upper's Chip and Joanna Gaines Get Ready for Ugly Fraud Lawsuit

Poor HGTV is having a rough time with the scandals lately.

And for the fourth time in recent memory, Chip and Joanna Gaines, the hosts of Fixer Upper, are making headlines for reasons HGTV would probably prefer they didn't.

More: Before you condemn Chip and Joanna Gaines, wait for them to at least address these issues

The couple has been sued by their former business partners, John Lewis and Richard Clark, who claim they were misled by the Gaineses and manipulated into selling their part of the business just before Fixer Upper took off. They just spoke exclusively to In Touch Weekly about it.

"We have been attempting to resolve this matter privately for many months," Lewis told the site. "There were multiple communications between my attorney and Chip’s attorney and multiple attempts to get this resolved. I wouldn’t say that [Chip] absolutely ignored it, but we never got into a position where there was any realistic chance of resolving it without filing the lawsuit."

Just a few days after the lawsuit was filed, Chip Gaines claimed he had never been contacted about the dispute, tweeting, "I’ve had the same cell number for 15 years. Same e-mail for 20 years. No one called or emailed? Four years later ‘friends’ reach out via lawsuit — hum."

More: Chip Gaines Challenges Allegations He's Against Same-Sex Marriage

But Lewis says his lawyer emailed Chip about the lawsuit months before it was filed.

In their claim, Lewis and Richards say they were 66 percent owners of Magnolia Realty before they were convinced by Chip to sell their share for just $5,000 in 2013. Days before the sale, Chip signed on with HGTV to air Fixer Upper, which caused the business' value to skyrocket.

"The bottom line is we owned a business together. We had been friends for over a decade. The choice could have been when he had the knowledge that there was a success on the horizon that he could have allowed his friend and business partner to enjoy that future success with him, and he chose not to do so," Lewis said. "I knew they were filming a pilot. I had no idea that it was going to be aired on any network, let alone HGTV, and didn’t know about that until two days after we signed over the company to Chip. I trusted what Chip was telling me — the business we owned together had no value."

He added, "I’m very happy for their success. The only thing I’m unhappy about is being tricked into selling my portion of the company."

Chip's lawyer, Jordan Mayfield, responded to the claims, saying, "We are confident that these claims will be found to be meritless. It is disappointing to see people try to take advantage of the hard work and success of Chip and Joanna."

Hopefully, for HGTV's sake and reputation, this doesn't end up needing to be settled in court.
