The Truth About Women's Sexting Habits May Surprise You

It’s no secret that the dating scene changes just about as often as you change your profile picture. And with the countless apps and social media posts constantly dishing out how-tos about the dating and relationships scene, it can be hard to tell what's fact and what's crap.

Well, thanks to Tinder, we now have some new insight into the myths and realities of dating in 2017. The swiping app recently conducted a national survey, and what they found will probably make you think twice about some of your preconceptions about dating. The poll, which captured responses from 9,522 U.S. men and women, compared and contrasted dating habits for online users and offline daters.

Check out some of the top intriguing and helpful takeaways below.

More: Married Gay Couples Are Healthier Than Those Who Haven't Tied the Knot

Myth: Men send more unwanted sexts
Reality: Women do it just as often!
Men aren't the only ones sending unsolicited nude photos of their bods… 50 percent of men and 50 percent of women are sending sexy selfies to someone who didn't necessarily ask for them.

Myth: Online dating killed commitment
Reality: People who click are likelier to commit!
Keep swipin’ on, singles — 74 percent of online daters have had more than one committed relationship as adults versus 49 percent of offline daters.

Myth: There are too many choices to commit...
Reality: ...Not really
Online daters are finding that less is actually more — 44 percent of online daters and 42 percent of offline daters say it's tough to commit due to the wide array of dating options, but only 9 percent of Tinder users report that they find it challenging to maintain a committed relationship; significantly lower than the national average.

Myth: Online daters are promiscuous
Reality: Online daters are far safer when it comes to health
When it comes to using protection when having sex with a new partner for the first time, 70 percent of online daters report safe sex practices most of the time or always versus just 63 percent of offline daters. Go Tinder!

Myth: Online daters hide behind a screen
Reality: Online daters are more likely to actually meet up
When it comes to actually getting together, 25 percent of online daters say they meet their matches in person after just two to seven days versus 15 percent of offline daters. Makes you wonder WTF the others are doing.

Myth: Online daters cheat more
Reality: A majority of online daters stay true to their partner
In a close match, but still a clear winner, online daters (93 percent) stay true to their partner more than offline daters (90 percent). This proves that fidelity does matter to most of us.

And if you think users are only checking out your good looks, guess again. Tinder users care most about age and education, with appearance only ranking third. But you might want to spend some time researching your potential dates' political views because users site political differences as a major deal-breaker. Keep on swipin’!

Josh Duggar Has Been Served and Is Being Dragged to Court

Updated April 20, 2017, 2 p.m. PT: Despite attempts by the Duggar family to settle out of court in the stolen identity case brought against Josh Duggar by the man whose photos he used on his dating profiles, it looks like Josh is headed to court.

According to reports, he's been served papers demanding that he testify at trial according to the demands of the DJ who's suing him, Matthew McCarthy. McCarthy's lawyer, Michelle Iarusso, told reporters she and McCarthy want the court to hear straight from Duggar's mouth "the extent of the fraudulent conduct."

She said the lawsuit is being brought against Duggar because McCarthy lost work when people started associating him with the Duggar family so soon after Josh's molestation scandal.

"We need to know if there are people out there who think that they have been in touch with our client because Josh was pretending to be him," Iarusso explained. "He certainly would rather not have been associated with a child molester. And prospective employers didn’t like it, either."

That's some courtroom drama better than anything on SVU.

Original story:

Not only did Josh Duggar cheat on his wife, but he used someone else's pics to do it.

Now, Duggar is facing a lawsuit from the guy whose photo he used to flirt with women on social media and dating sites, including the cheating site Ashley Madison. Matthew McCarthy, a DJ and photographer, claims Duggar stole his identity by using his photo to lure women online, and now he wants Duggar to pay him for the humiliation he says he's faced. McCarthy says that since the scandal broke, he's gotten nasty emails from people calling him "Duggar's boy toy" and "DJ Duggar."

According to Daily Mail, Duggar found McCarthy's photo online after Googling "random guy." He used it for his Ashley Madison account, OkCupid and Facebook. All of the accounts were linked to one of Duggar's email addresses. Duggar was outed after hackers released information on user accounts for Ashley Madison.

McCarthy claims in his lawsuit that being tied to Duggar this way caused him to lose some DJ gigs, and he's seeking damages to make up for his lost work. Meanwhile, Duggar, who lost his lobbying job at the über-Christian Family Research Council when the scandal broke, has been selling used cars to make ends meet, so we have the feeling McCarthy shouldn't get his hopes up for a big settlement.

The cheating scandal was just the latest blow during a pretty tough year for Duggar — months earlier, he admitted that he had molested several girls when he was a teen, including some of his sisters. Duggar's scandals ended up pushing TLC to cancel his family's reality series, 19 Kids and Counting.

For the Sake of My Family, I'm Not Ignoring My Hearing Loss

I saw them watching me. Their small eyes taking in the way I was faking it. How I laughed at the jokes I didn’t hear. The way I nodded neutrally when I could not understand what someone was saying, careful not to agree or disagree just in case they were saying something controversial. The times I avoided certain people that I had trouble hearing. Or sat by myself at a party because I was afraid my hearing loss would be discovered.

My father did all these things. That is how I learned them. And now I was teaching my children the same tactics. Avoid. Deny. Hide. This had to change.

Our hearing loss is genetic, so I may have passed it onto my children. While I hope they will not develop hearing issues — it doesn’t manifest until adulthood — I didn’t want them to feel the same embarrassment and discomfort about hearing loss that my father had and I seemed to as well. I needed to stop the cycle of shame.

More"Period in a Petri Dish" Could Have a Big Impact on Reproductive Research

When I was growing up, my father’s hearing loss was an unmentionable. I don’t recall a time when he didn’t have hearing problems, but I do remember the progression from no hearing aids to one to two. And the long sideburns he wore well past the time it was in style to conceal them. He did his best to hide it at home, at work and with friends, who slowly stopped making plans with him.

Our family was not supportive. My mother sometimes muttered things behind his back to my sister and I, telling us not to worry about what she said because he couldn’t hear us. I remember thinking this was odd, but I was a young child and content enough to play whispering games with my mother if she that was what she wanted. I don’t think my father heard what we were saying, but I am sure he felt the disrespect that this behavior communicated. And we were the ones who were supposed to love him.

Maybe that is why he didn’t count on us for help. He never asked us to repeat what somebody said or rearrange the seating at the dinner table to make a place where he could better hear. He didn’t teach us to look at him when we spoke to him so he could lip-read or to speak slowly and clearly. Perhaps he did not know these tricks — the ones I use in my life today to communicate with my family.

So when I saw my children watching me, I recognized the damage I was doing. I was passing down the shame and the embarrassment and the unhealthy behaviors. I needed to break the cycle. It was time to come out of my hearing loss closet. So I did.

MoreMeet the Future of Egg Freezing

I began volunteering with various hearing loss charities and attending monthly chapter meetings of Hearing Loss Association of America, where I developed friendships with other people with hearing loss. It was amazing to talk with others who understood the challenges of hearing loss but led engaging and exciting lives nonetheless. I learned tricks of the trade from the more experienced members of the group and shared some of my own.

My involvement with hearing organizations was a good excuse to be more public about my hearing loss, which I had always kept hidden, modeling my behavior after my father. When my friends asked me why I was involved with HLAA, I would tell them about my hearing loss. Most of them had no idea, but none of them cared. I am not sure why I thought they would.

Eventually, I became a hearing health advocate, joining the national board of HLAA and starting a blog called LivingWithHearingLoss.com to share the ups and downs of living with hearing loss and provide tips for living a vibrant life despite hearing loss. I hope by sharing my stories, I will help others live more comfortably with their own hearing issues.

Coming clean about my hearing loss has made my life much easier. I no longer avoid socializing for fear of embarrassment about not being able to hear. I assume I will find a proactive solution or simply make my apologies and try again another time. I wish my father had been able to experience this freedom before he passed away.

Today things are very different. When my children watch me, they see someone who is comfortable with her hearing loss and does not let her disability hold her back. They see me announce my hearing loss and ask for the accommodations I need. They observe me request quiet tables in restaurants and caption readers at the movies. They have even helped me reorganize an entire Thanksgiving dinner seating plan in real time so that I could have a more hearing-friendly seat.

More: Our Bodies, Ourselves Takes on International Surrogacy

My children understand the challenges of hearing loss, but they also see that these hardships can be overcome. They will be much better prepared to deal with these obstacles in adulthood should they need to. Mission accomplished.

Here's what you need to know about hearing loss:

1. Hearing loss impacts 48 million Americans, including 20 percent of teens and 60 percent of veterans. Most people with hearing loss (65 percent) are under the age of 65.

2. Hearing loss is associated with many health problems, including diabetes, cardiovascular disease and a higher incidence of dementia. Treating hearing loss with hearing aids and other devices has been shown to decrease this risk.

3. Typical signs of a hearing problem include:

  • Finding it difficult to hear in noisy situations
  • Hearing speech sounds but having trouble understanding their meaning
  • Your family complains the TV is too loud
  • You often ask people to repeat themselves

4. Getting your hearing tested at an audiologist or otolaryngologist (ear, nose and throat doctor) is quick and painless. If you think you might have a hearing problem, get tested. It will provide important information about your health.

5. If you have a hearing loss, don’t ignore it. Treat the problem and continue on with your vibrant and engaging life.

Ozzy Lusth Says He's the Best Mediocre Survivor Contestant Ever

Even after four seasons competing on Survivor, Ozzy Lusth remains one of the most popular castaways ever. From his strength in challenges, to his Mowgli-like survival skills, he's an instantly recognizable character among the sea of 498 previous contestants. In our one-on-one interview today, Ozzy explained what went wrong for him this season and revealed his desire to possibly play one more time. Plus, find out which remaining player does he believe is not a true game changer.

SheKnows: You seemed genuinely shocked to be voted out. Was it a true blindside or did you know the tribe was targeting you?

Ozzy Lusth: I knew that I was gonna get some votes, but I didn't think I was gonna go home. I thought the people I was aligned with would be true to their word. I was definitely shocked.

SK: Debbie is taking a lot of credit for orchestrating your elimination. Do you believe that she's the person responsible for getting you out of the game?

OL: She floated the idea, but the people I thought I could trust are the ones who went with it. She is the one who started the conversation, but Brad, Sarah and Tai are the ones that finished it.

SK: As your torch was snuffed, it was clear how angry you were. What was going through your mind at that moment?

OL: That's one of those times when you wish you had composed yourself a little better to say something funny or witty. I was just bummed that I was having my torch snuffed. I couldn't think of anything that cool to say, but I wish I had.

SK: If you could go back and change your exit comments, what witty thing would you say?

OL: Oh, man. You're putting me on the spot. I think I just would've been a little more gracious.

SK: Once again, you played the role of provider for the tribe by working around camp and catching fish to eat. Some fans are saying this is your continued downfall because you're distracting yourself from being socially strategic. Do you agree?

OL: Yes and no. If I didn't play that role of provider, then my tribes wouldn't have done as well as they did. But yeah, I think there's something to be said of that.

SK: When you were sizing up the rest of the cast at the beginning of the game, who do you believe didn't deserve to be labeled as a game changer?

OL: That's a good question. Probably Sarah Lacina. I just don't know what she did to change the game.

SK: When it comes to challenges, you've always been a tough competitor to beat. Did you ever consider dialing it back at times so people didn't perceive you to be such a physical threat?

OL: No. That never crossed my mind. I think that would be a really cheap way to play.

SK: Having played four times for a record number of days, would you argue that you're one of the best players ever?

OL: No. Maybe. I may be the best mediocre player ever.

SK: Would you play for a fifth time if they asked?

OL: Yeah, sure. Maybe in another six years.

SK: What would you do differently next time?

OL: Nothing.

Selena Gomez and The Weeknd Have Taken Their Relationship to Record Breaking Levels

Selena Gomez is already the most-followed person on Instagram. In the past few months, she has picked up another 15 million followers, to round out at a whopping 118 million followers as of today. That’s insane. Even more insane: The shot she posted of herself with new beau The Weeknd (née Abel Tesfaye) has already hit almost 7 million likes—and it’s only been up for four days.

More: Sorry, Justin Bieber — Selena Gomez is taken by another pop star

In fact, one Selena Gomez fan site noted that the romantic pic of the pair hit 1 million likes in less than one hour, which definitely does not happen every day. But—then again, everyone is definitely not Selena Gomez (or The Weeknd, for that matter).

Gomez just beat her own record. Last year, she made waves for having the most-liked Instagram of all time, which actually happened to be an ad. We won’t dwell on what kind of commentary that is on the state of the world today, but—well, it’s actually kind of sad.

Anyway, Beyoncé blew Gomez out of the water and took the most-liked-Instagram-ever trophy when she posted a pic of herself pregnant with twins a couple of months ago, which currently has more than 10 million likes. Though Sel and Abe’s shot hasn’t hit that point yet, give it time.

What Coprophagia is and How to Stop Your Dog from Doing It

$

We're friends, right? You're in the circle of trust here, so I feel I can ask you a fairly personal question. So, here goes: Does your dog eat poop? Remember, this is a safe place, and you can trust me with all your secrets. After all, I've been known to have a few pups in my life who consider poop a food group. Gross but true.

More: Choosing your dog's food may not be the super-simple decision you thought it was

Trust me when I say there are certain things you can't unsee in this world, and my quest for an answer to this peculiar doggy practice yielded several. However, in the name of you, dear readers, I've forged ahead and found out some pretty intriguing information about this repulsive canine habit.

For starters, did you know there is an actual, honest-to-goodness term for such behavior? According to the American Kennel Club or AKC, it is called coprophagia (kop-ruh-fey-jee-uh). The bad news is that there are many reasons your sweet doggy may think stools are a delicacy. The good news is that this proclivity can be deterred.

Before we delve into that, though, let's talk about why your pooch feels compelled to gobble poop.

It's in our dogs' DNA

Seriously. Scientists believe it could be coded in your dog's genetic disposition. In a 2012 study out of the American Veterinary Society of Animal Behavior annual conference, Dr. Benjamin Hart from the University of California, Davis, explored the phenomenon.

More: No, your pet should not be forced to follow your vegan lifestyle

In his findings, he stated, "Our conclusion is that eating of fresh stools is a reflection of an innate predisposition of ancestral canids living in nature that protects pack members from intestinal parasites present in feces that could occasionally be dropped in the den/rest area." Um, how selfless?

It's just a phase

While some species of animals actually eat poop to obtain key nutrients (so thankful I'm not a rabbit right about now), dogs get everything they need from other food. So sorry, Fido, that can't be your excuse. However, puppies eating poop is still pretty natural behavior. The upside is that they typically grow out of it by the time they are around 9 months. Unless, that is, they are females and grow up to have puppies of their own — at which point they will eat their puppies' poo for around the first three weeks.

Your dog is lonely

Scientists have found that dogs who are frequently isolated from other dogs, like those kept in a kennel, are more likely to eat their poop than would their well-socialized puppy peers. So as gross as it may sound, the next time you see your dog eating poop, he might just need a hug. Or, you know, a playmate.

Because imitation is the most sincere form of flattery

I don't want to say it's your fault your dog eats poop, but... j/k, j/k. Well, sort of. You see, dogs are very eager to please, and like children, they tend to absorb information by watching you. If your dog ever makes a mistake in the house and you clean up after him by picking up his poop, he may try to mimic the behavior. But since he doesn't have those cute little deodorized baggies like you do, he has to use his mouth to dispose of his doo-doo. This mimicry is called allelomimetic behavior in dogs.

The dog really is hungry

Although most dogs get all the nutrients they need from food that is not poop, some dogs — for reasons ranging from parasites to neglect — are not getting their caloric or nutritional needs met and therefore resort to feces to try to fill in the gaps. So if you see a dog eating poop and there doesn't seem to be any sort of environmental or behavioral trigger, it's quite possible the pup needs a big bowl of kibble, stat.

More: If your dog's farts can peel paint off the walls, we may have a cure

If you have a poo gobbler living in your home, don't despair. Since this behavior is not essential to your dog's well-being (not to mention the fact that it's super gross), it can be curbed. The easiest way to get your dog to give it a rest is to restrict his or her access to any poop. Which, in full disclosure, is easier said than done. But if you stick to it, your persistence should pay off. And it goes without saying, the best practice anytime you have a concern about your dog is to consult your vet.

Here’s Exactly How to Apply Eye Shadow, Step by Step

Raise your hand if you’ve ever said, “I just don’t look good in eye shadow,” or “Eye shadow is too confusing,” or “How the hell do you apply eye shadow?” Yeah, we’re going to guess most of your hands are up right now. Because weirdly, sweeping some powder over your eyelids really isn’t as intuitive or as simple as it sounds, especially when you factor in eyelid shape, skin tone and straight-up patience and perseverance, the latter of which tends to be in short supply when it comes to morning makeup routines.

But never fear, because we sincerely promise that the act of applying eye shadow is not as tricky as it looks. And to prove it to you, we got Ashleigh Ciucci, a makeup master, to break down the most basic of basic eye shadow steps (in GIFs! Easy-to-follow, on-a-loop GIFs! Oh, boy!), so you can finally buy an eye shadow palette and actually use it rather than nervously hiding it in the bottom of your drawer with the promise of “some day.” Click through to see the tutorial and get ready to take a billion selfies — or at least brag to a bunch of people.

Create a Base
Image: Tory Rust

Step 1: Create a base

If you want your eye shadow to look insanely smooth and expertly done (and, trust us, you do), you need to first create a base by sweeping a nude, iridescent eye shadow — iridescent is easier to wear than matte — over your entire lid, blending it from your lash line to your brow bone with a tapered blending brush, like the Sigma E40 or the MAC 224.

Products to try:

  1. For light to medium skin tones: Smashbox Full Exposure Palette (Smashbox, $52)
  2. For medium to deep skin tones: Tarte Tartelette in Bloom clay eye shadow palette (Sephora, $46)

Define the Crease
Image: Tory Rust

Step 2: Define the crease

It sounds counterintuitive, but subtle, natural-looking eye shadow actually requires layering on a bunch of shadows to give the illusion of depth. Otherwise, your eyes can look flat and dull. So swirl your tapered blending brush over a warm, soft-brown shadow (only a few shades darker than your natural skin tone) and blend it into the outer V of your eye, sweeping it from your lash line to the middle of your crease.

Darken the V
Image: Tory Rust

Step 3: Darken the V

Using a blending brush, like a Make Up For Ever 216 or an E.l.f. crease brush, pick up a darker brown shadow (only a few shades deeper than the last shadow), and smudge it lightly it into the outer corner of your eye near the lash line, then blend it beneath the eye, sweeping it along the first third of your lashes. Don't freak if it looks a little dark — we'll be blending the hell out of it in the next step.

Blend Blend Blend
Image: Tory Rust

Step 4: Blend, blend, blend

As with all makeup, blending is key, lest you look like you finger-painted your face. So swirl your tapered blending brush (don't pick up any extra shadow) over the dark-brown eye shadow you just applied, blending it up into the crease of your eye and across your lash line to really define that outer V. Keep blending in concentric circles until all harsh lines are invisible.

Add the extras

Step 5: Add the extras

Line your eyes with chocolate-brown or jet-black eyeliner, wiggle on some mascara and then find someone to brag to, because you just applied eye shadow like a pro. HUZZAH!

Let's Take a Closer Look at Ivanka Trump's 'Influence' Over the World

Ivanka Trump was named one of Time’s 100 Most Influential People for 2017 with a glowing endorsement from media executive Wendi Murdoch. “Ivanka continues to earn my respect and admiration for how she has chosen to use her new visibility. She has long advocated to empower women and girls and is now leading education initiatives and working to put an end to human trafficking. I am deeply impressed by her courage to leave behind life as she knew it and move her young family to Washington to pursue positive change.”

But does the first daughter deserve the honor? Not since Hillary Clinton and her pantsuits has a woman in the White House caused such a ruckus. Half the country adores her as a graceful example of American women. The other half, who hoped she’d be a check on her father’s conservative policies, is really annoyed at her thus-far milquetoast approach. I’m still unsure what to think of her or whether to think of her at all.

More: Ivanka Trump Announces She's Pregnant in Hilarious Video

Watching media coverage of Trump since the election has been perplexing. Immediately following the win, she said she was just going to be a daughter to the president. When her husband, Jared Kushner, took on a role requiring him to be in D.C., she says she realized “having one foot in and one foot out wouldn’t work,” as she explained to Gayle King on CBS This Morning.

Gayle King Interviews Ivanka Trump

Gayle King Interviews Ivanka Trump

Her official role is now assistant to the president, a title she took to clear up ethics concerns; being an official White House employee requires her to disclose her finances and divest from her companies. It’s an unpaid position, though she does work from a White House office. There’s long history of children advising their presidential fathers in the White House, but Trump may be the first one in living memory. What’s less common is a child trying to advise their presidential father on issues on which they disagree. This is a sticky point, and the one that is driving opinion of Trump.

More: This Woman Chef Shut Down IvankaTrump.com in the Best Way

Feminist leaders and liberals have consistently criticized her for not speaking out publicly and forcefully against her father on issues for which she claims to be an advocate. So far, she has declined to answer those criticisms directly, instead speaking obliquely through interviews. When King asked how she’d respond to the critics, she said, “I would say not to conflate lack of public denouncement with silence. I think there are multiple ways to have your voice heard. In some cases, it’s through protest and going on the nightly news and talking about or denouncing every issue which you disagree with. And sometimes, it’s quietly and directly and candidly. Where I disagree with my father, he knows it, and I express myself with total candor. Where I agree, I lean in and fully support the agenda.”

Long before the campaign, Trump founded a jewelry line to cater to women in the high-end market that, until then, targeted men. Branching off her lifestyle brand, she founded the nonprofit initiative Women at Work. In the days after the election, she arranged meetings with her father for Al Gore and Leonardo DiCaprio, both well known for their work on climate change. She also met independently and quietly, sometimes completely unknown to the media, with Facebook CEO Sheryl Sandberg, president of Planned Parenthood Cecile Richards, co-president of the National Women’s Law Center Marcia Greenberger and adviser to the National Partnership for Women & Families Judy Lichtman. Moves like this have angered many conservatives as the administration has softened its stance on issues like the Paris climate treaty, the repeal of Obamacare and a carbon tax. On the other hand, Politico reported on Richards’ anger after what she called “deafening silence” on health care from the first daughter.

MSNBC anchor Stephanie Ruhle echoed Richards on what has become the rally cry to Trump. “She’s taken one of the potentially most powerful positions in the White House, one of the most powerful women in the world, and now she has to be accountable for what she says she’s so passionate about.”

Stephanie Ruhle on Ivanka Trump

Stephanie Ruhle on Ivanka Trump

Or does she? She’s serving as an unpaid assistant in a role that doesn’t appear to have taken a job from anybody else and which she only moved into to defray conflict-of-interest concerns. Who exactly is she beholden to?

What’s confusing is that so much speculation has happened over what Trump might or might not, should or should not, have said, and she isn’t piping in to quell it. Town & Country magazine recently included an article subheader that claimed Trump influenced the decision to bomb Syria, quoting this from an interview her brother Eric Trump: “I’m sure she said ‘listen, this is horrible stuff.’ My father will act in times like that.” An article in Cosmopolitan quoted from a speech Ivanka Trump gave at the Fortune Most Powerful Women summit last October in which she said, “I don’t express my views on policy, with one exception as it relates to childcare and advocating for women.” The article went on to surmise what she might be telling her father and what he might be inferring. Nobody really knows and that’s driving everyone crazy.

Trump is definitely blazing her own trail in this new political landscape. She has the ear of the president, none of the expectations of a paid office and both sides want her to represent them. At just 35 years old, she’s is — whether you like it or not — kind of an it-girl.

So, yeah, for this year at least, she’s definitely an influencer. Let's hope she uses that power for good.

There's No Way Vin Diesel and Dwayne Johnson’s Feud Is Over for Good

It's the most bro-tastic Hollywood feud you probably don't know about is Vin Diesel vs. Dwayne "The Rock" Johnson. Both actors have been co-stars in the Fast and Furious franchise since 2011, when Johnson joined the Fast and Furious crew. Now, six years and three movies down, it would seem this working relationship has broken down past the point of repair. Rumors of a feud broke out on the set of Fate of the Furious, when Johnson posted a cryptic but shady Instagram about a certain "candy-ass" in the cast. Apparently, this person (read: Diesel) had made filming a less-than-pleasant experience for Johnson, whose caption on a video from the set included this comment: "My female co-stars are always amazing and I love 'em. My male co-stars however are a different story. Some conduct themselves as stand up men and true professionals, while others don't. The ones that don't are too chicken shit to do anything about it anyway. Candy asses." Whoa, that is ice-cold, bro!

More: Dwayne Johnson's Oscar Loss Is a Win for the Rest of Us

Despite Vanity Fair's report of their feud timeline, which indicates that Diesel and Johnson reconciled shortly after Johnson got extra salty on Instagram and then proceeded to show remorse, all was seemingly well by early August 2016. Case closed, right?

Actually, I'm not convinced that these two guys have resolved all of their problems. For two men who have attempted to explain away this feud by saying they just have "fundamentally different philosophies" when it comes to work, the evidence implies these once-cool co-stars are still locked in a Cold War.

Rock Vin Diesel
Image: Giphy

Your honor, I submit into evidence this mighty tidbit that Johnson and Diesel are "fine," but not really OK: they have not promoted Fate of the Furious together. At all. This became public knowledge right at the beginning of the Fate of the Furious press tour. According to the Hollywood Reporter, a source reported Diesel and Johnson were being kept "as separate as possible" whenever the opportunity arose for them to come together. That certainly doesn't sound like there's been a reconciliation, right?

For some reason, they cannot be in the same room together to talk about Fate of the Furious. No, seriously: They can't put their differences (or maybe it's their egos?) aside for one moment to talk about a flippin' movie. Just look at the photographic evidence.

Johnson and Diesel appear to have been kept apart during the various Fate of the Furious premieres (we wouldn't want their personal bubbles touching) and haven't done a single interview together. Look at Johnson just chilling alone on the red carpet at one of the many Fate of the Furious premieres:

One truly is the loneliest number.

In comparison, look at how chummy Diesel is with his Fate of the Furious co-stars Tyrese Gibson, Nathalie Emmanuel and Ludacris:

What a difference, right? Also, couldn't at least one or two of Johnson's co-stars have joined him on the red carpet? I mean, that's just uncool.

More: Vin Diesel's Plan for Paul Walker's Fast & Furious Character Is a Bad Idea

Apparently, sources were trying to smooth over the very glaring fact that Johnson wasn't participating in this press tour (mostly because of Diesel, but also because he was promoting Baywatch and Jumanji too) by saying, "What happened is over, and no one expects there to be any lingering effects. When it comes time to promote the movie, this will have no bearing."

The Rock Insta Fate Furious

The Rock Insta Fate Furious

Yeah, it looks like their need to be separated isn't having a noticeable effect, except for the very obvious fact that they aren't seen together and we all know exactly why. No biggie.

So precious. If only Diesel was directing that love at Johnson.

And there you have it. It would seem that the official word from both camps is that this feud is in the past. But please. The recent events on the Fate of the Furious tour imply that those bonds will never truly be healed. It's a shame too because Diesel has gone on record as saying Johnson is another family member to him.

Welp, there's nothing to see here, folks. These two men are fine and we're fine and it's all going to be fine. I think.

Just in Time to Ruin Your Weekend, We Learn White Wine Can Cause Rosacea

Everyone knows that warm, subtle glow we get when drink our favorite liquor or pair our favorite wine with a meal. And even more drastically than that, studies have shown that red wine is a common trigger for rosacea — a skin condition that looks like red flare-ups all over your face. But even though this is something we’ve had time to consider, studies have just recently added white wine to that list, showing that it might actually do more damage than red wine does.

More: Could Your Love for Chardonnay Put You at Risk of Developing Melanoma?

The results of this study were published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology, and it actually changed the idea around wines regarding rosacea development, concluding that red wine doesn’t really do much to increase the chances of contracting rosacea. Red wine actually contains anti-inflammatory properties, so while it can cause flare-ups, the concept of it triggering rosacea in any individual is now contested.

More: New Study Finds That Red Wine Has Benefits Beyond Your Heart

White wine, on the other hand, has a much more drastic effect. From the study and data collected from around 83,000 nurses across the country, women who drink around one to three glasses of white wine a month had a 14 percent increase in the chances of developing rosacea. Women who drank five or more glasses a week greatly increased their risk by 49 percent, leaving little room for dispute when it comes to white wine consumption and the development of the life-altering skin condition. So even though it’s fine to have a glass or two every now and then, maybe now you should think twice before you plan to rosé all day.

Kate Middleton Admits Parenting Is Lonely, Wins Our Hearts Forever

We continue to be so impressed by the former Kate Middleton's relatability and warmth — especially when she's talking motherhood.

We swooned when the duchess spoke out to advocate for more mental health support and care for mothers, and this Thursday, the Duchess of Cambridge spoke frankly about the challenges of motherhood at an event marking the opening of the Global Academy in London. Kate — in case you live off the grid in a tree house in a Siberian forest — is the mother of Prince George, now 3, and Princess Charlotte, 23 months.

More: Kate Middleton delivers powerful speech about kids' mental health issues

"It is lonely at times," she told event attendees. "You do feel quite isolated... But actually, so many other mothers are going through exactly what you’re going through. But it’s being brave enough, like you obviously were, to reach out.”

If the Duchess of Cambridge (and beloved wife of Prince William) feels isolated and lonely trying to pull off this motherhood gig, then we all get a free pass to go a little easier on ourselves as moms, right?

Kate was chatting with the co-founders of Mush — an app that makes us think of sled dogs, but has nothing to do with sled dogs whatsoever. Katie Massie Taylor and Sarah Hesz co-created Mush to be a virtual support system connecting new mothers — in hopes of lessening that occasionally overwhelming sense of loneliness so many new moms experience.

More: The reason Kate Middleton isn't in her sister Pippa's wedding

We're not her only tongue-tied fans. Kate also spoke with 16-year-old Oliver Monger about having trouble speaking up and reaching out. Monger told the duchess, "Meeting you is a new thing. I don't really know how to speak to someone so high. I'm quite shy."

Kate reassured him, "I'm shy as well, so don't worry." Man, that kid is going to be crushing on her for life. Not that we are, or anything. We're totally cool, very chill. Royalty schmoyalty.

No, but seriously: Princess Diana would have adored her daughter-in-law, we think.

Why Oprah's Involvement With the Henrietta Lacks Movie Was Destiny

More than half a century after her cells propelled some of the most significant medical breakthroughs of all time, Henrietta Lacks is finally getting some recognition.

In case you didn’t read Rebecca Skloot’s 2010 best-seller The Immortal Life of Henrietta Lacks, the book tells the story of Lacks, an African-American woman from Baltimore whose cancer cells were taken during a medical procedure in the early 1950s, and because of their unusual ability to multiply, went on be used in research leading to everything from chemotherapy drugs to in vitro fertilization.

On Saturday, April 22, the story will come to the small screen in an HBO film adaptation produced by and starring Oprah Winfrey as Lacks’ daughter Deborah and a cast featuring Hamilton’s Renée Elise Goldsberry as Henrietta and Rose Byrne as Skloot.

More: Why It's So Important for Women to Share Their Stories About Not Having Kids

The film centers on Deborah — who was only 2-years-old when her Henrietta died — and her quest to find answers about her mother, which intersects with Skloot’s search for the identity of the woman behind the famous HeLa cells. There are also occasional flashbacks featuring a young Henrietta, establishing the environment that shaped the woman who produced some of the most influential cells in medical history.

Creating the film version of the book was “an amazing and very long process,” Skloot told SheKnows. In fact, discussions on making a movie started before the book was even published — and there was no shortage of interested parties with competing ideas of how the adaptation should look.

Enter: Oprah Winfrey.

It was early February 2010, and Skloot was at the last stop of a four-month-long book tour staying at a friend’s house in Chicago when her phone rang around 5 or 6 a.m.

She picked up and heard a familiar voice: “Rebecca? Oprah. How are you doing?”

Winfrey had just finished reading (note: It was 5 or 6 a.m. in Chicago, so it was even earlier in LA where Winfrey was located) and had to call Skloot in the moment to share her experience and emotional response to the book and why she thought it was such an important story.

MoreTrying to Conceive? The Important Test Your Gynecologist Isn't Telling You About

While there was other interest in producing the movie, once Winfrey and HBO were on board, Skloot said there was never a question of who would be making the film adaptation.

“This team [HBO and Winfrey] wanting to join together on this was so clearly the perfect combination of people and places,” Skloot added.

In fact, for Skloot, Winfrey’s involvement was more than perfect — it was destiny.

Back in 2000 while researching the book, Skloot was in the car with Deborah, who confidently insisted that “someday this book is going to come out and it’s going to become a best-seller and Oprah’s going to make a movie and she’s going to play me in it.”

After years of searching for clues about her mother’s identity and contribution to science, Deborah was finally getting answers; 17 years later, she’d get the movie.

The film doesn’t shy away from the fact that Deborah was at first reluctant to trust Skloot and agree to participate in her investigation. After years of misinformation — including wrong names and other inaccuracies — surrounding Henrietta’s cells, Deborah and the rest of the Lacks family, Skloot said that it was important to her that the movie didn’t add to that confusion and stick to the facts as much as possible.

From the beginning, Skloot insisted that Lacks family be as involved as possible in the making of the film — and said that HBO was completely cooperative. Skloot and upward of 15 members of the family served as consultants for the film and visited the set several times. She said that it was “an incredible experience to watch some of the scenes I had witnessed a decade earlier brought to life in front of me.”

In addition to letting people know about Henrietta’s incredible contributions to science and medicine, Skloot also hopes that the film’s release will bring attention to the work of the Henrietta Lacks Foundation — an organization Skloot started to help people who have made important contributions to science without their consent, as well their descendants.

Currently, the foundation has provided 56 grants to the Lacks family for everything from health care to education, and additional grants for education to relatives of subjects from the Tuskegee syphilis experiment.

MoreHow "Rainbow Mamas" Are Helping to Spread Much-Needed Miscarriage Awareness

For Skloot, a major takeaway from the book and movie is the importance of women taking ownership of their own health care, prevention and treatment. When Henrietta first sought treatment in a segregated hospital in the 1950s, doctors didn’t know how to diagnose her — but she knew something wasn’t right.

“Even without a science education or any means, she knew her body well enough and somehow had the fortitude and insight to say ‘no, something is actually wrong with me’ and to go looking for it herself,” Skloot explained. “There’s a scene in the book where she actually found the tumor herself on her cervix. She knew something was wrong and she tried to get evidence of that and went to Hopkins and said ‘I have a bump on my cervix’ — that is one of the most incredible moments in her story.”

That in itself was a revolutionary act, according to Skloot; Henrietta worked as her own advocate and managed to get herself into a hospital with top-of-the-line care.

“Even though the average woman is not going to have her cells used for decades in research projects around the world, I think it the book made people more aware of issues surrounding informed consent and access to health care for marginalized populations,” Skloot said.

Anna Faris Is the Livetweeting Queen We Don't Deserve but Definitely Need

Have you ever wondered what it would be like to spend a day married to Chris Pratt? What a stupid question; of course you have. Chris Pratt is the charming doofus we all dated in high school who suddenly got super hot and now you're sitting there going, "Wow, hello, hot former boyfriend."

What's better, I feel like in the celebrity couple ecosystem, Pratt and his wife, Anna Faris, are kind of in the Dax Shepard and Kristen Bell realm of coupledom: goofy, playful and, for all intents and purposes, very much in love.

More: Why Chris Pratt, Anna Faris Are the Best Married Couple in Hollywood

Faris recently tweeted that she'd keep us updated, which turned out to actually mean livetweeting her day with Pratt as they got ready for the Guardians of the Galaxy Vol. 2 premiere, and it was everything.

Anna Faris

Anna Faris

First of all, at 8:24 a.m., she tweets a picture of herself standing in front of her shower. One would assume, given the setting, that she was about to take a shower. Instead of showering, Faris does the most relatable thing ever and goes back to bed and starts scrolling through her Twitter feed.

Anna Faris 2

Anna Faris 2

Welcome to my life, Anna Faris. We'll both get around to cleaning ourselves eventually, right?

Next, she documents the return of her loving husband. Instead of making him pose with a grin or take a selfie, she posts a shot of his back as he walks through their home after a yoga class. Look at this body language:

Anna Faris3

Anna Faris3

That is the body language of a man who's thinking to himself, "I hate that I'm awake right now. I am never getting up for a 7 a.m. yoga class ever again. This is some real bullshit. Never again. Never. Again."

Faris knows this. She knows the way all partners know and yet, instead of backing off and giving him space, she's like, "Huh. Let's see if livetweeting this moment of suffering can deepen it juuust a little more." #Hero.

Next, the livetweeting takes a little detour with a cute picture of her son with a not-so-cute snake, and I'd like to take a similarly not-related detour to discuss this next photo.

Faris finally gets around to actually showering at 9:18 a.m., complete with mascara doubling as raccoon eyes, and then posting this:

Now, can we just stop for a moment and look at the sheer number of products they have stockpiled in that back room?

WTF is going on there? Is this normal? I know everyone's got their stuff that they can't live without. I, too, have a basket of assorted products. But really, guys, this looks like half a drugstore. Is it because I'm just a poor Canadian lady and they're a rich Hollywood couple? Are they secret hoarders? Is Chris Pratt low-key high-maintenance? I have so many more questions about this situation, but I digress.

Next, Faris tweets a handful of getting-ready shots. Having her hair done, nails painted, makeup applied. Then she graces us with this picture, which just might answer some of my questions while also inspiring a few more:

Anna Faris5

Anna Faris5

There is just so much happening here.

1. What is on Pratt's face? Yes, he has shaving cream on his neck, but WTF is under his eyes and around his mouth? Is this some sort of magic de-wrinkling patch? I feel like this is a thing that everyone knows about and I'm just sitting here, all wrinkled and foolish, like, "Duh, they invented that?! I mean... can you guys at least tell me next time so I don't have to find out from Chris Pratt?

2. Pratt is definitely low-key high-maintenance. All of those products in the bathroom? His, for sure. Boxes full of these bewildering anti-wrinkle patches. Tubs full of lotions and potions. I'm onto you, sir. You don't fool me anymore.

3. The mirror drawings! One is a poorly drawn cartoon. One seems to say "Sland Time 86" (...Island time? Stand time? Who knows). The other writing seems to be a workout routine. Semi-interesting, but at least now we know that the Faris-Pratts are mirror-writers, and let me tell you, that would not fly in my house.

4. Yes, Anna. Chris is definitely annoyed. Thank you for bringing us this moment of realness.

Faris continues the livetweeting right until they arrive at the movie premiere. The pros take over picture duty and her feed goes quiet.

As soon as it's over, I want more. I want her to livetweet every day with Pratt. Expose more of his diva antics. Show us more of the secret product hoard. Continue aggravating her spouse for the delight of the internet. Pretty please?

Prince's First Wife, Mayte Garcia, Has Enough Memories of Him to Fill Another Book

She was Prince's first wife and one of his main muses during one of his most prolific eras, and Mayte Garcia tells us she has even more remarkable tales to tell.

Garcia was part of Prince's world from 1990, when they first met after her mother submitted a video of a then 16-year-old Garcia belly-dancing, until their divorce in 2000. Their first baby, a boy they named Amiir, died shortly after birth; a second pregnancy ended in miscarriage.

Now, Garcia is opening up to the world and discussing her life with Prince. SheKnows had the chance to interview Garcia about her new book, The Most Beautiful: My Life with Prince (you can read the first part of that chat here). During our talk, she told us that more anecdotes of the iconic artist may be coming to a bookstore near you in the future. Next time, though, they'll be focused on the stories behind the songs.

When it was mentioned that fans have lots more questions about Garcia's life with Prince, she explained her idea on how to potentially incorporate her experiences with the "Purple Rain" singer into another book. "It was so funny, I was talking to a friend of mine and we'll hear a song come on and be like, 'We were there when that happened!' He was like, 'You know, you could write a book on just all the songs you were around and how they came to be.' That would be interesting, we'll see," she remarked.

Garcia also said that despite some fans' displeasure at her revealing intimate parts of the notoriously private superstar's personal life, she had his family's blessing to do so. "I talk to Omarr [Baker, Prince's half-brother] and Tyka [Nelson, Prince's sister]. I saw them all [at the memorial] and I still have contact with them. It's a transition right now that we're going through, and healing, and I know I'll be seeing them soon. I'm going to Minneapolis for a book signing, so I probably will go and have pancakes with Omarr."

Interestingly, when asked about the reaction Prince's family had to the memoir, Garcia noted that they reacted positively. "They were very supportive, I do know that. When I was there last time, I had waffles with Prince's brother Omarr, and Tyka, I spoke with her, and they know that we're all family, and it's coming from love, so I know I'm gonna get big hugs from them."

The Easy, Pretty Way to Fake Fuller Lips with Makeup

We’re all about trying new beauty trends, but there are some movements that can stay safely on our social media feeds (lookin’ at you, holographic hair and unicorn nails). But there’s one lip trend that we’ve been somewhat obsessed with since it popped onto our radar last summer: pink ombré lips.

It’s not that ombré lips just look cool — it’s that they also give your lips the illusion of being fuller thanks to the way the colors fade from dark to light, like a natural shadow on your mouth. Basically, ombré is like a contour for your lips, and thankfully, it’s not actually that hard to create as long as you’ve got a dark lip liner and a lighter lipstick, both in the same color family. So, for example, grab a burgundy liner and a bright, pink-purple lipstick a few shades lighter if you’re going for a pink ombré, which is ideal for spring.

The steps are simple: Outline your mouth and the corners of your lips with the liner, erring on the side of a thick, rather than thin, line. Fill in just the middle of your lips with your brighter lipstick, then paint over the liner too to softly blend the two together, without looking muddled. Yup — that’s it. It’s that simple.

But if all of that sounded like a garbled, jargon-y mess, check out this incredibly simple tutorial from beauty vlogger Alexandra, who breaks down the ombré trend on camera. And yes, her lips look legit perfect by the end, so you know it’s actually possible to do. Watch the view below, and then try the trend out on yourself this weekend!

Drake Sympathizes With Woman Who Broke Into His Home

It's been a month of ups and down for Drake. First, he was facing some crazy baby mama drama with Instagram model Layla Lace (that turned out to be a complete hoax). Now, his $7.7 million home has been broken into, but that's just the life of a celebrity, right?

The 24-year-old woman broke in on April 3 and was charged with felony burglary, but now Drake is reportedly telling the police to drop all the charges against her.

According to the Daily Mail, Drake's lawyer contacted the Los Angeles County district attorney to "make it clear he will not cooperate in any prosecution" of the woman because Drake thinks she has mental issues and "thinks it would be cruel to make her a felon" for the break-in.

To be fair, she may have broken into his house, but she didn't really do anything malicious. Reports say she helped herself to some Pepsi, Sprite and Fiji water from the fridge, then put on one of Drake's hoodies and went to bed in one of the house's six bedrooms. A member of Drake's entourage found her later. Even though she insisted she had permission to be in the house, he called police. It still hasn't been publicly revealed how she got onto the gated property, which Drake calls the YOLO Estate (of course he does), but hopefully we find that answer out real soon.

What You Need to Know Before Reaching for a Diet Soda

$
0
0

Of course we know that diet soda isn't necessarily the healthiest beverage in the fridge — but is it really that bad for us? According to controversial new research, yes.

The study was recently published in Stroke, the American Heart Association's journal, showing there may be an association between artificially sweetened drinks (like you'll find in diet soda) and a higher risks of stroke and dementia. While diet soda has been used by scads of people wishing to avoid excess sugar consumption, artificial sweeteners have been eyed with suspicion for years due to the potential for negative health effects.

While this study did find an association, what does that really mean for us, especially those of us who are diet soda drinkers?

MOREMy weight made me invisible and I kind of miss it

The study was limited to specific populations

Researchers pored over data from the Framingham Heart Study, which is a project of the National Heart, Lung, and Blood Institute and Boston University. They looked at 2,888 adults over age 45 and 1,484 adults older than age 60. The over-45 group was studied for stroke risk and the over-60 group was studied for dementia risk.

There was a connection between diet soda and strokes

When the researchers studied adults who consumed diet soft drinks and compared them to their peers who never did, they found that those who drank at least one a day were three times as likely to suffer from an ischemic stroke (the most common type, where a blood clot is lodged in the brain). They also found that they were around three times as likely to be diagnosed with dementia. Those drinking one to six artificially sweetened drinks per week were 2.6 times as likely to suffer a stroke, but were not more likely to experience dementia.

But the FDA says artificial sweeteners are safe

All sweeteners that have been approved by the FDA have been officially deemed safe for consumption by the general population.

MoreThe Strawberry Laser Lipo treatment is a lot like a magic trick

Artificial sweeteners have been linked to weight loss and weight gain

While many turn to diet sodas to reduce overall calories, studies on the topic have been conflicting. Some found that they do lower caloric intake, which promotes weight loss or maintenance, but others show that those who drink on the regular actually gain weight.

Diet soda has not been linked to cancer

While early studies showed certain sweeteners caused cancer in laboratory animals, subsequent studies have not shown clear evidence of doing so in humans.

There may be more to the story

The Calorie Control Council notes that while this study has shown an association between low- or zero-cal beverages and certain health risks, there are limitations to the study itself that need to be addressed. They note that people who may already be at a risk of stroke and dementia, such as those with diabetes or obesity, are often more likely to turn to diet sodas. Also, they say that variables, such as socio-economic status, BMI, drug and alcohol use, family history and depression were not completely considered.

MOREFDA approves new eating disorder method, er, weight-loss device

Bottom line

While this study has shown an association, it's not conclusive, and widespread recommendations to avoid the substances should not (and likely will not) be made. That doesn't mean, however, that there isn't anything valuable to take away from this study. Take it with a grain of salt, but also keep in mind that further studies may add more credence and it may be worth altering your habits.

Why Creative People Are Proven to Get More Dates

$
0
0

When you're toughing it out at the gym and hair salon, it's easy to succumb to insecurities about appearance, wondering if it makes a major difference in what dates and jobs you get. But an awesome new study is a reminder that it's really more about what's inside than out. Creativity and brains can, in fact, outweigh looks when it comes to attracting a mate.

Sure, you probably knew this in theory (hey, your mom's been saying it forever, right?), but there's nothing like science proving something satisfying like this. The research, which was published in Royal Society Open Sciencefound that creativity isn't just appealing in a potential partner — it has equal appeal to looks. So, if you're dating someone who you might not be crazy physically into, if he or she is an ace photographer or has amazing drawing abilities, you're likelier to discount the lack of physical attraction because those other qualities will make up for it.

More: Study says sex and booze make people happier than kids

"Creative displays can get a potential partner's attention, create intrigue, keep them interested and make them want more," says dating and empowerment coach Laurel House. "And while it's natural instinct to desire such shows of affection, it also exemplifies effort. People want to know that someone is going to put effort into you and make the relationship a priority. By writing poetry, bringing interesting gifts or planning unusual dates, people can nonverbally and creatively communicate that he or she listens, cares and is invested in you."

Essentially, while our biological instincts are drawn to people with symmetrical features on the premise that those people will be stronger, healthier mates to reproduce with, those instincts also kick in when creative, brainy behaviors are shown. We see someone who won't just be smart, helpful and interesting, but will also, on a biological level, be a better bet as a life partner.

So if you're single, you'd do just as well to buff up on your artistic and brainy skills as your yoga or elliptical ones. Satisfying, right?

We all know birth is probably the most amazing experience out there on this weird planet of ours. But few of us get to witness birth unless it's our own babies or we happen to be one of the tribe of doulas and midwives and doctors out there.

So this stunning video clip from an obstetrician in Venezuela is a rare opportunity to see a newborn emerge into the world. But it's even more amazing because, as natural as the moment appears, it's actual a C-section — a "gentle" one.

During a gentle C-section, a baby isn't immediately scooped from the womb. Instead the baby is allowed to emerge slowly, allowing their chest walls to be squeezed (to get out any and all fluid that might still be in the lungs) as in a vaginal birth. Then the baby is placed on the mom's chest right away and breastfeeding can be initiated. Check this out:
