General Hospital's Carolyn Hennesy Has Some Great Advice for Jennifer Lopez

Carolyn Hennesy has been stirring up trouble and sipping the tea as the smart and sassy Diane Miller on General Hospital since 2006. Her work on the show even earned her a 2010 Daytime Emmy nomination for Outstanding Supporting Actress.

More: Carolyn Hennesy Discusses Diane Miller, Horror, the Trapeze

Fans love Hennesy both on and off screen for her sharp wit, trapeze tricks and her frankness about "women of a certain age." It's what makes her one of the most refreshing actresses in the entertainment industry.

SheKnows caught up with Hennesy, not only to ask about GH, but to find out the inside scoop on the rumored Gilmore Girls sequel.

Since fans adore the antics of Diane Miller, we gave Hennesy a quiz on how Diane Miller would respond to these pop culture topics:

  • The O.J. Simpson trial: "First of all, if she had been defending him, she would have incurred major bad karma points. I don’t think she would have wanted to be in the same room with him, but she would have given him the best defense."
  • J.Lo dating Alex Rodriguez: "She would say, 'Honey, stop jumping from man to man. You are not a flea going from dog to dog. Take some time and give yourself a year at a nice spa with a good therapist — reflect and revamp your whole way of doing things.'"
  • How to united a divided country: "Diane Miller would run for president. It's as simple as that. Like our current commander-in-chief, I would take not any B.S., but I would do it in much more binding and bonding way. I would make a no-divisive law."
More: GH Star Kirsten Storm Is Feeling the Heat From Fans Over Her Appearance

If those answers don’t make you love Hennesy even more, how about her next big storyline on GH? She teased us with a few upcoming plot points.

"One of the main characters is going off on a nebulous, inner psychological tangents and Diane is heavily involved," she laughed. "Frank Valentini [General Hospital's executive producer] loves me for a reason and it’s because I know how to spin the spoil."

With the Nurses Ball happening again this year, Hennesy revealed that she has not been asked to participate as of yet. She did have a great idea for a plotline, though.

"I think Diane Miller, using Carolyn Hennesy’s trapeze skills, should descend from the ceiling of the ballroom and do a delightful little trapeze number," she offered. "I think that would be Hi-larious!"

Her artful comedy was also seen in last fall’s Gilmore Girls reboot as Toni, one of Emily Gilmore’s friends in the Daughters of the American Revolution club. While she doesn’t think her character will be back after Emily’s evolution and move to the beach, she does have an opinion on Rory’s baby daddy.

"I’m not thrilled with that Logan in London who is cheating on his fiancée," she said. "And I am not thrilled that Rory’s is doing that. Come on!"

More: So, Basically, Milo Ventimiglia Just Doesn't Have Any More Time for Gilmore Girls

We couldn’t agree more with her Rory assessment and her thoughts on women in Hollywood. Hennesy is vocal about the entertainment industry needing to share stories about women over the age of 45.

"I would love to see the industry cater to women who are not millennials," she explained. "I understand that you need to keep that audience going, but I think there are so many women who need to see themselves, that age category that I call ‘women of a certain age.’ We need to see women over 45, over 50 and over 60 represented."

While the entertainment industry needs to rethink how they are handling women over 45, Hennesy believes daytime television is setting the bar for how women’s stories are handled.

"I think daytime TV is doing remarkably well. I think they’re starting to explore LGBT issues, women of a certain age with great friendship issues, cougar issues and why it’s not wrong — I think they're making the women smarter. Women are doing great!"

A Million Pounds of Chicken Are Being Recalled Because of Metal Contamination

Since chicken's a major diet staple for most meat-eating humans, we'll cut to the chase. The U.S. Department of Agriculture's Food Safety and Inspection Services just made their latest recall announcement, and it’s a massive (and seriously terrifying) one. Breaded chicken products that were produced between Dec. 19, 2016, and March 7, 2017, and were sent everywhere from school lunchrooms (ack!) to your local Walmart. But wait... you haven't even read the worst part yet.

The ready-to-eat chicken, produced by OK Foods, involves nearly 1 million pounds of breaded chicken that authorities fear has been contaminated with "extraneous materials" — including metal! WTF is going on?!

More: Yesterday's Cheese Recall Now Includes Mushrooms and Other Snacks

Apparently this all happened after OK Foods "received five consumer complaints stating that metal objects were found in the ready-to-eat chicken products and by FSIS inspection personnel during verification activities. After an internal investigation, the firm identified the affected product and determined that the objects in all the complaints came from metal conveyor belting." Yiiikes.

Although there have been no reports of people getting sick yet from this contamination — thank heavens for that! — anyone who does have this chicken in their fridge or freezer is advised to either toss it ASAP (duh) and/or return it for a refund. See full list of items affected here.

Jeez. For now, maybe go back to packing lunch for the kids yourself, with whole foods you can make sure came from the Earth and don't contain manmade contaminants like, you know, metal.

Reports say those adorbs photos were taken as Affleck and Garner left church in Brentwood, California, on Sunday with their three kids in tow. The family outing was after Affleck announced on Facebook that he had completed treatment for alcohol addiction, which seems to have gone a long way in getting the family back together — Affleck had moved off the family's LA area compound, but returned after completing treatment.

"I want to live life to the fullest and be the best father I can be," he wrote in his Facebook statement. "I want my kids to know there is no shame in getting help when you need it, and to be a source of strength for anyone out there who needs help but is afraid to take the first step. I'm lucky to have the love of my family and friends, including my co-parent, Jen, who has supported me and cared for our kids as I've done the work I set out to do."

The two have been killing it with the co-parenting since they separated in 2015. A source told Us Weekly that even though Affleck moved back onto their property, co-parenting is all they're doing.

"They are not a couple by any means, but they are resuming their co-parenting arrangement," the insider explained. "He is very appreciative of Jen being so supportive and giving him a chance to get better. She has always been there for him and continues to be."

What You Need to Know About WebMD's New Pregnancy App & Research Study

In a world where apps exist for tracking everything from sleep cycles to menstrual cycles, it’s no surprise that ones used to track progress during a pregnancy are especially popular.

While WebMD has had a mobile pregnancy app for several years now, it has recently been updated to include an intriguing feature. Users can now opt into a large-scale study, sharing their data with other expecting parents and researchers alike.

What it does

Here’s how it works: After you download and sign into the app, it functions the same way as the previous version — providing pregnancy tips and advice, a week-by-week breakdown of the gestation process and checklists to help you prepare for the baby’s arrival. This difference is found on the bottom right of the screen. There is a menu where there is an option called “Research,” which gives you the option of participating in the Healthy Pregnancy Study.

More: Understanding Urinary Incontinence in Women

The goal is to enroll more than 100,000 pregnant people in what will likely be a multiyear study according to Dr. Jennifer Radin, the study’s principal investigator.

This is an observational study, meaning that there is no treatment or intervention for the participants. It is also completely voluntary and users of this function of the app can drop out of the study any time. Users will be asked questions about their current health and medical history when they sign up, and then answer follow-up questions throughout their pregnancy and up to four weeks after delivery. The information collected will be de-identified and kept anonymous.

Possible concerns and benefits

Dr. Celia B. Fisher, director of the Center for Ethics Education at Fordham University advised users to proceed with caution regarding their personal information.

“Even when data is de-identified, as we become more and more technologically progressive, no site can guarantee that the identity of the pregnant woman will not be uncovered by new technological knowledge,” she told SheKnows.

More: 5 Commons Skin Care Label Lies

In exchange for entering their personal information, users will be able to visually track their weight change and blood pressure and compare them to the recommended guidelines, as well as compare their individual information to other app users.

Research projects

There are several specific ideas in the works for the data resulting from the study, Radin told SheKnows. The first is to identify more individualized weight gain recommendations by crowdsourcing from a large and diverse population using the app.

The current recommendations that are put out by the Institute of Medicine are very general for all pregnant women regardless of factors such as race, height and age. In fact, according to Radin, only around one-third of women even meet these recommendations, with 48 percent gaining too much and 21 percent gaining too little.

More: Why Resetting Your Internal Clock Is Easier Said Than Done

“We plan to provide women with data and visualizations that show how their physiological changes, such as weight and blood pressure, compare to other women with similar characteristics as themselves,” she explained. “We also hope that this data can be used to help predict certain complications, such as preeclampsia or gestational diabetes, earlier.”

Radin noted that there is potential for many other research projects using the information collected from this app, which will be available in de-identified form for qualified researchers to use in their own projects.

What You Need to Know Today About Friday's Health Care Bill Failure

$

0

Unless you’ve been doing a social media cleanse, you know that on Friday, Republicans abandoned their proposed health care bill. It’s a lot to keep track of, but here’s what you need to know this Monday morning.

1. Paul Ryan and Republicans failed – big time

On Friday afternoon, President Donald Trump and House Speaker Paul Ryan pulled the GOP’s bill to repeal and replace the Affordable Care Act, also known as Obamacare, because it did not have enough support. No official House of Representatives vote was taken because it was clear that at least 33 Republicans — primarily members of the Freedom Caucus — would not get behind the bill. According to reports out of D.C., Ryan got down on one knee and pleaded with Rep. Don Young of Alaska to support the bill. It did not work.

More: No, Republicans: Defunding Planned Parenthood Definitely Will Not Save Money

2. Freedom Caucus

The Freedom Caucus is a small group of conservative Republicans in the U.S. House of Representatives founded in 2015. Ultimately, it was their opposition to Ryan’s bill that caused the bill to be pulled. But don’t start sending fan letters to its members just yet — keep in mind that just because they didn’t support this bill, it doesn’t mean that they’re in favor of keeping Obamacare on a long-term basis.

3. What their bill looked like

The GOP health care bill — “Trumpcare” if you will — would have eliminated the individual mandates put in place by Obamacare and replaced them with refundable tax credits, primarily based on age, to use to purchase health insurance. It also would have cut federal support for Medicaid.

This bill did keep some of the most popular parts of Obamacare, including protecting people with preexisting conditions and allowing people to stay on their parents’ health insurance up to the age of 26.

4. They said they didn’t have enough time

Here’s the thing: They’ve had seven years. SEVEN. YEARS. Republicans running at all levels have campaigned to repeal and replace Obamacare since before Obamacare was even in place. This is, by any account, a lot of time to come up with a viable plan.

Trump ran — and was elected — with the very specific promise to repeal and replace Obamacare within his first 100 days in office. Friday was Day 64 of the presidency, and they have already given up.

More: No, Planned Parenthood Still Doesn't Use Federal Funds for Abortion

To put it more in perspective, it took 187 legislative days to pass Obamacare. Only 17 legislative days lapsed before Trumpcare was dead in the water.

5. Obamacare will stay — for now

After a grueling 17 legislative days trying to come up with a politically viable health care plan, Ryan and Republicans have indicated that they’re done with health care until further notice. Even though it was one of their primary campaign promises and Obamacare is an alleged “disaster,” they believe it’s time to move on. The takeaway: Those currently utilizing the Affordable Care Act will remain covered, at least for the time being.

6. What it means for women

Obamacare’s Essential Health Benefits — which are disproportionately relied upon by women — are still intact. These include doctors’ services, inpatient and outpatient hospital care, prescription drug coverage, pregnancy and childbirth, mental health services, rehabilitative services and devices, lab work and more.

Preventative care services will also remain covered by all private plans, Medicaid expansion programs and Medicare. For women, this means continued access to breast and cervical cancer screening, osteoporosis screening, pregnancy-related services, well woman visits and contraception. It also means that women are still able to access birth control and lifesaving cancer screenings at Planned Parenthood.

More: Kate Walsh on Why Defunding Planned Parenthood Would Be Disastrous

While the GOP’s failed health care bill did not specifically address birth control coverage, the president and Secretary of Health and Human Services Tom Price have both expressed their plans to advance “religious freedom,” meaning that there will likely be other attempts to limit access to contraception.

On Thursday, Vice President Mike Pence tweeted a photo of around two dozen men discussing the health care bill. This is what we’re dealing with: rooms full of old white men making decisions regarding women’s health.

Though health care may no longer be at the top of Republicans’ agenda, it is literally a life and death matter for so many women. Continued support of organizations like Planned Parenthood is crucial to make sure we don’t take steps backward.

Want Your Kids to Do Well in School? It Could Come Down to Their Friends

Could peer pressure actually determine your child's academic success? Turns out a kid's grades may hinge on their friends — not their teachers. That's the finding from a study published in the International Journal of Education Research. So the next time you're freaking out about what teacher your kid got, maybe take a look at your child's circle of friends instead.

In the study, college students enrolled in an online psychology class received rationale (as to why the class was important and vital for their future success) from peers, the teacher or none at all.

More: Let's Weigh the Pros and Cons of Mandatory School Uniforms

The students who received rationale from their peers scored an average of 92 percent on their final grade. Those who got it from their teacher scored 86 percent. And those who didn't get any? They still managed an average of 90 percent.

Researchers believe that students just identify more with other students than an instructor. "When I hear a peer's story, it connects to the story I am telling myself about who I want to be in the future," said co-author Cary Roseth, an associate professor of educational psychology.

Even the students who received no rationale did better than those who received it from the teacher. So why aren't instructors making more of an impact? Researchers believe the fact that teachers control the grades and tell the students what to do may undermine their efforts to communicate the importance of the class.

Bottom line? Encourage your children to hang with those smart, motivated kids — not the ones sneaking cigarettes in the bathrooms when they are supposed to be in class. I've noticed that kids pretty much want to do whatever their friends do. (I am sure of this because in elementary school, my friends and I all wore super-cool knickers with argyle socks.) So if your children are spending time with classmates who want to do well, it will probably rub off on them too.

Does Tom Cruise Have a New GF and Did Scientology Really Choose Her?

Cruise's new rumored love is actress Vanessa Kirby, a new rising star due in large part to her role in Netflix's The Crown. Some reports say they're dating and others speculate that they're already engaged.

Cruise has stayed single since his split from Katie Holmes in 2012. The two divorced after five years of marriage, reportedly due to Cruise's heavy involvement in the Church of Scientology. At the time he was dating Holmes, there was rampant speculation that the church set them up to be married, and now, the same rumors are flying about Kirby. She doesn't appear to be a current member of the church, though Holmes didn't convert until after she and Cruise started dating.

More: According to Leah Remini, John Travolta Can Literally Get Away With Murder

But a source told In Touch that Cruise and Kirby had instant chemistry when she was cast in the upcoming sixth Mission Impossible movie.

"Tom flipped for her work and told the other Mission: Impossible producers that he had to have Vanessa for a crucial role for the franchise’s sixth installment," an insider said. "They had instant chemistry, and of course she got the role. He’s blown her away with his endless charm and energy. He thinks she’s perfect to be his next wife. He wants to make her the next Mrs. Tom Cruise."

That may seem fast, but that's nothing new for Cruise. He famously proposed to Holmes only eight weeks after they met, prompting even more rumors that their union was set up by the Church of Scientology.

Kirby is no stranger to celebrity romances. She was previously with Douglas Booth, a co-star on BBC's Great Expectations. The two dated for more than a year starting in 2012.

Christina El Moussa Fires Back at Insta-Shamers

There’s always a new batch of Instagram-shamers ready to share their opinions online. The latest victim of a case of online mommy-shaming: Christina El Moussa sharing a photo of her kids playing by the pool having a great time. Naturally, people would find some way to consider that a travesty. But El Moussa wasn’t about to let them go without a few choice words of her own.

The star of HGTV's hit show Flip or Flop fought back against comments on said Instagram post, which showed four young girls, including El Moussa’s 6-year-old daughter, Taylor Reese, playing in a small backyard pool while her son, Brayden James, hangs back in his PJs. The celeb mom captioned the pic, “Our first slumber party!! … 6 kids, a dog and 2 moms. So fun, crazy, but so fun … *sorry just realized kids in swimwear again… it’s cali people it’s what we do.*”

The mom of two snapped back, saying, “OMG 1. It’s a beach entry if he fell in it’s only a foot high, he would be ok 2. It’s not his first time in or around the pool, but thanks for your “concern” aka judgement 3. AND most importantly I am right there and could be to him in 3 seconds SMH at this…..!!!!”

Many comments hearkened back to an earlier instance of mommy-shaming in which El Moussa posted another photo of herself and daughter Taylor in matching bikinis with their new French bulldog puppy, Cashie. Many people called the photo inappropriate, but the majority of her followers came to her support immediately.

While many similar users commented with concerns of appropriate content posting or safety concerns that El Moussa was apparently neglecting in her most recent photo, many others came to the mom’s defense, saying “Enough with the haters! Keep doing what you do,” and “I just don’t understand what’s wrong with kids in swim suits, or moms for that matter.”

Advice for New Moms: What I Wish I Had Thought About

$

There’s a lot we worry about (needlessly) before becoming parents. But on the flip side, there’s a lot that we had no idea was stuff we had to worry about. Or we knew, but we didn’t KNOW deep in our souls. And it's not like worrying is productive, exactly, but it would have been good for us to stop and consider some of these challenges, before we were waist-deep in them.

Here, in no particular order, are stories from experienced moms on what never occurred to them before their children were born. Warning: Some of these are funny, but some stories are very sad.

With my first, I was unprepared for all the feelings of oh-God-what-have-we-done-we-ruined-our-lives. I wasn't cavalier going into the whole parenting thing; I wasn't someone who expected it to be easy. But at the same time that I loved my daughter a terrifyingly huge amount, I also really wasn't sure if our lives would ever be happy again. I remember a childless friend coming to visit when the baby was about 3 weeks old; my friend put her hand on mine and said, "You must be so filled with joy." And there was no way I could say, "Holy crap, no! I mean, yes, I love this baby a ton. But also get me out of here!"

— Kristi

I totally believed that "the hard part" would be when my daughter was a baby and that by the time she became a teenager, I would totally have this parenting thing down.

HAHAHAHA. Ha. Ha.

 — Karen

How much breastfeeding would hurt. And yes, we had lactation consultants absolutely yelling at me that everything looked fine with latch, etc., and that it shouldn't hurt. Well, it does hurt, even if everything is otherwise perfect. Like toe-curling, worst pain in the world hurting. And that giving a baby a bottle filled with formula to save your own sanity won't destroy your kid.

— Josette

More: Advice for New Moms: What I Didn't Have to Worry About

I wasn't prepared for the constant guilt and worry that I'm screwing everything up and failing everyone in my life. Every decision carries so much weight and has far-reaching, and sometimes unexpected, repercussions.

— Melissa

Wish I had considered the possibility that something could go wrong. Both my sons are on the autism spectrum and I was just totally shocked. It took me years to recover from that! I just took for granted that I would have typically developing children.

— Michele

I had a glorious 10 years of selfish time before children. I was not prepared for the resentment I would feel about the loss of my time ownership.

— Helen

I had no idea how much it would bring my own sense of mortality to light. Roller coasters became far less appealing. Taking a rowboat on even a placid lake means life preservers at my feet. I started counting rows between my seat and the airplane emergency exit like you're supposed to (but never do). I buckle seatbelts in NYC cabs now. Who does that?!

— Liz

I didn't know about "screaming until they puke in the car seat." I thought babies slept in the car. BOY HOWDY WAS I WRONG ABOUT THAT. I also was not prepared for projectile spit-up or poop coming up the back and out the neck of the onesie. I just... I had no idea.

— Vanessa

I didn't worry about wearing sunscreen (on my face) every single day. Before I had my first son, I wasn't really outside that much. But after he was born, I felt I needed to give him as much outdoor play as possible. Since we lived in a small apartment in Brooklyn, I hit the playground daily for years. I was in the sun nonstop.

I ended up with skin cancer and a lot of wrinkles in a short amount of time.

— Michele

More: Top 20 Baby Necessities for New Moms

I never thought to worry about anything going wrong with the birth, so I didn't plan to have a preemie the second time around. I was spoiled by my first delivery, which had been textbook perfection. It never occurred to me that I'd have anything but a repeat performance. But Ben came a month early and spent the first 12 days of his life in the NICU. You can't really prepare for what that experience is like, even if you have warning, which I didn't.

— Tara

No one told me how absolutely awful the first six weeks are. I was completely shell-shocked.

— Danielle

On the subject of teens, nothing on Earth can prepare you for the first time your kid is supposed to be home, they don't answer their phone and you realize you have no clue where they are.

— Beth

My first child was stillborn. I distinctly remember cruising past a chapter in a pregnancy and birth book about stillbirth. The first paragraph was basically "You're not going to read this because no one wants to think about it." They were right. I didn't read it. The hospital staff were wonderful and kind, but I do wish I'd taken a really hard hour to think about what I'd want if it happened to me.

— Jennifer

How I would NOT change. Everyone told me that your life will change so completely, the child becomes so important to you that everything else dwarfs in comparison. I was shocked to learn that all my other needs and passions didn't go away — they still demanded to be recognized and nurtured. I wasn't prepared for that truth.

— Bonnie

Never ever, ever getting a break. I was SHOCKED after going back to work that a weekend meant nothing. I struggled through my workdays exhausted only to be woken up at 5 a.m. on Saturdays like clockwork. I never experienced something so all-consuming. Mentally and physically.

— Lauren

I wish I had known how helpful it would have been to be a rich person.

— Jen

I didn't know that parenting my own child would trigger difficult memories of my childhood abuse. I strongly recommend that anyone who dealt with severe physical and/or emotional punishment as a child start therapy before having kids if possible, and if not, right away after having kids in order to mitigate the flashbacks and other PTSD symptoms that can occur.

— Carolyn

I wish I'd understood the isolation better. I wish I'd insulated myself from it more. Going from going to school every day to going to work every day to going nowhere at all was difficult. And I'm an introvert who loves to be away from people almost all of the time. But it was too sharp a contrast for me and I've tried to prepare other new parents ever since.

— Jennifer

I really underestimated the exhaustion. I kept thinking, "I've been in college, I've pulled all-nighters, I've had early-morning jobs!" But there's no preparing. I don't even know what I could've done differently, but it was like the time Southern Californian me took a light jacket to Boston in February because "how cold can it really be?"

Meet the Mom Behind Some of the Country’s Coolest Boutiques

$

It’s easy to get the idea that if you want to work in fashion, you have to live in New York City—maybe Los Angeles if you want to dress celebrities. But try telling that to Kristen Lee Cole, creative director of not one, but three of the country’s most ahead-of-the-curve boutiques: Tenoversix in LA and Dallas, and By George in Austin, the city she now calls home.

While she did get her start on the East Coast, studying first at NYU and then at Parsons School of Design and working in New York through her 20s, she says moving west—first to LA and then to Austin—provided a welcome change of pace, particularly after becoming a mom. “I left New York because I was a little burnt out on the city and was really curious about LA,” she explains. “LA was wonderful and such a great experience, and Austin was kind of the same thing. It was a little bit of a life curiosity, what would it be like to live in smaller city, especially now that I have a son.”

Laid-back environment aside, Cole herself has hardly had the chance to slow down. In her role, she oversees buying, marketing, and e-commerce for all three stores, hand-selecting pieces that fit the unique aesthetic of each—not an easy task when you consider how different the customers are, something Cole is clearly finely attuned to. In LA, Tenoversix caters to a creative crowd and stocks emerging, offbeat designers—think wide-leg jumpsuits by Breelayne and hand-painted leather jackets by Veda. “Our main kind of clientele, they generally have very individual style,” says Cole. “They’re not afraid to take chances, but they also like to be cool and relaxed. We understand that aesthetic pretty well as this point.”

Kristen Lee Cole 1

At the Dallas store, which opened in 2013 inside The Joule hotel, shoppers tend to be more interested in capital-F fashion. As Cole describes it, “Makeup is always done, hair looks nice—head to toe they are always put together—much more so than with LA women. LA women are more causal, relaxed, and eclectic. In Dallas they like to dress.” Both stores also stock arty housewares and lifestyle goods, a reflection of Cole’s own interests in interiors and design.

By George is the most recent addition to her resume; while the store was founded in 1979, she took the reins as creative director in 2015. There, established brands like Marni and Chloé share the racks with rising stars like Sies Marjan and Jacquemus. Austin, she says, “is a very unpretentious city, a very low-key city—so different from New York, Paris, or London.” That said, “The women here are pretty refined … We sell beautiful pieces and here, women are a little more prone to invest in a really high-quality piece more so than a trend.”

Kristen Lee Cole 2
Image: @tenoversix/Instagram

So, how does one person balance such distinct aesthetics? Well, as you might imagine, it takes some serious organization. Working out of either her home office or her office at the boutique, she says, “I basically just wear my By George creative director hat for half the day and then my Tenoversix hat the other half of the day, so I literally split my schedule between the two businesses. I really compartmentalize my days with that work, except for the creative stuff, which falls into both categories.” On a typical workday, she negotiates orders with designers and showrooms, makes buying appointments, approves marketing collateral for stores, advertisements, and events, and produces and oversees e-commerce photography—all the elements that go in to giving a boutique its unique voice.

More: The First-Time Mom Who Got Her Dream Job While 7 Months Pregnant

This, of course, is on top of raising a family, and Cole is currently pregnant with her second son. “Once I started being a working parent, my time became a lot more precious and I worked a lot harder to fit in everything I wanted to fit in in a day,” she says. “I do have to be pretty meticulous … there’s no downtime, with is a bummer.” She credits her success to schedules, discipline, and a whole lot of lists, and adds that in the time she does get to spend with her family, she does her best to fully disconnect—no iPhone, no email, no distractions.

Sometimes this means cooking at home, and sometimes it means passing along some of her other interests. “I’ve always dragged my sweet little son around to galleries and museums with me. That’s something been really fun for me because I love art and my husband loves art and we both collect, so we bring him along,” she says. Austin’s famous swimming holes also provide a favorite weekend activity.

Usually, Cole would be in the midst of the fashion-week circuit this time of year—a schedule that typically involves jumping between different market appointments, meetings, shows, and presentations every hour—but with her second child due this spring, she’s letting her teams handle the running around while she holds down the fort back home. With another boy on the way, she won’t be going too crazy with the kids’ clothes shopping—her son mostly wears American Apparel and J.Crew, she says—but she does have a few insider tips for cool childrenswear brands: Sweet WilliamsNico NicoBoy+Girl, and Bobo Choses—plus, of course, the stuff for the little ones they stock at Tenoversix.

Whoa, guys. We need to all take a big, collective chill pill when it comes to Selena Gomez and The Weeknd.

More: Did Selena Gomez Just Reveal She’s Going on Tour Again?

The adorable new(ish) couple met up in South America where The Weeknd is on tour — Gomez flew in to meet him in Colombia and then they both flew to Brazil. The scenes from their arrival at the São Paulo airport are totally bananas.

Rabid-looking fans already figured out the couple's flight plans and met them at the airport and apparently also found the hotel where they're staying and mobbed them there too.

That kind of crazy attention looks way too intense. Sure, they're celebrities and they have to expect it to a certain extent. But the way they were being surrounded and screamed at by so many fans while they were just trying to get out of the airport looks like a massive pain — and one that has the potential to break them up.

Think about it: If your relationship had to face that kind of stress on the daily, what are the odds it would last? That looks exhausting, and our bet is neither of them can keep putting up with that kind of strain for long. Everyone just have some chill already.

Luckily, though, for now, everything seems OK with our new fave celeb couple.

United Airlines Turns Girls Away for Inappropriate Attire, AKA Leggings

Ever since yoga pants and leggings have replaced jeans and khakis as the pant style du jour, people have had all kinds of opinions about what's appropriate dress and what crosses the line into too tight or revealing. So when two teens and one younger girl were stopped and questioned about their legging attire before boarding a United Airlines flight on Sunday morning, the crowd (and Twitter, of course) went a little nuts.

The woman who tweeted this out to millions of viewers, Shannon Watts, gave followers a play-by-play as the story unfolded. “A United gate agent isn't letting girls in leggings get on flight from Denver to Minneapolis because spandex is not allowed?” She then followed up a few minutes later with, “She’s (gate agent) forcing them to change or put dresses on over leggings or they can’t board. Since when does United police women’s clothing?”

But before you go getting your own leggings in a bunch, it should be noted that these travelers were “pass riders,” which the company says are relatives of United employees who fly for free or on discount — but also with certain expectations. And those expectations were made clear at the gate. “Like most companies, we have a dress code that we ask employees and pass riders to follow,” United spokesman Jonathan Guerin said in a media statement.

OK, I’m still not convinced keeping girls from boarding a plane because of leggings (even if they're “pass riders”) is a fair policy, and according to some news outlets, this incident is sparking a lot of conversations about sexism and dress code policies that target women more than men.

For now, United is standing by its policy, and whether or not they decide to take a second look later, plenty of damage has been done. In a market where airlines are all competing for the same passengers, this viral incident has given other airlines the ammo they need to recruit new customers. In an “in your face” kind of message, Delta Airlines tweeted this to followers: “Flying Delta means comfort. (That means you can wear your leggings).”

Fasten your seatbelt… it’s going to be a wild ride on Twitter until this dies down!

Yoga Class Dropout Tries Again With Hilaria Baldwin

As someone very open about her anxiety, I’ve had countless people suggest that I should do yoga. In theory, that makes sense. In practice, I have been asked to leave not one, but two yoga classes.

The first time I kept falling down (on account of bad balance) and subsequently laughing. The instructor sent me to a different class where yoga was performed with the assistance of one of those giant exercise balls. All it took was one minor slip for the ball to shoot out from under my legs and fly across the room, hitting several women in the head en route. That was 2010, and the last time I attempted anything yoga-related.

So when I interviewed Hilaria Baldwin — wife of Donald Trump Impersonator-in-Chief Alec Baldwin — back in December when her lifestyle book was released, I mentioned that yoga wasn’t exactly my forte. She kindly assured me that I just haven’t been in the right environment, and offered to let me attend one of her classes. In my heart I knew this was a bad idea, but her offer was so sincere that I decided to give it a shot anyway.

Like any serious athlete, I listened to my usual pump-up music on the subway ride, starting with “I Have Confidence” from The Sound of Music, and moving on to the Newsies soundtrack.

When I arrived at Yoga Vida, her Union Square studio, I signed in, waited in a line to change clothes and then made my way into the massive room where the class took place. It was larger than my elementary school’s cafeteria and lined wall-to-wall with yoga mats. Eventually, I found a spot next to the wall, set up shop and looked around for an encouraging look from someone.

I got one from a woman behind me — although it was more concerned than encouraging — and she advised me to try and move away from the wall. Looking down at her mat, I noticed she had a large brick at the edge.

“Oh, do we use bricks in this class?” I asked her, trying to sound engaged and competent.

“You mean a block?” she asked, holding up what turned out to be a rectangular piece of firm foam. “If this is your first class in a while, I’d definitely get one.”

After I grabbed a block — not brick — from the back shelf, I stood on my mat, sweating profusely. Again, I turned to my new friend behind me.

“It’s a million degrees in here,” I informed her. “I’m already dripping and we haven’t even started yet. I didn’t realize this was a hot yoga class.”

“It’s not,” she replied, giving me a quick, nervous smile. “But you do know this is a really intense, advanced class, right?”

Technically yes, I was told ahead of time that the class would be fast paced and high energy, but like a fool, I took that to mean "fast paced and high energy in the context of yoga, an inherently slow exercise." This is a good indication of how much I know about yoga.

At that point, Baldwin walked in and took her place on a raised platform at the front of the room.

“Let’s warm up with some oldies!” she said, sticking on some generic-sounding sock-hop music and immediately started doing extremely rapid jumping jacks.

I just stood there, thinking it was some sort of joke, but the rest of the room joined in right away. This was happening.

We alternated between jumping jacks, knee lifts and some bouncy dance steps, all at lightning speed. Once I got over the initial shock of how active this yoga class was, I decided to give it an honest try.

This is the point when I have to mention that for a person with an ample bosom, planning ahead by wearing the proper foundation garments is crucial. Thinking I was going into a gentle stretching class, I treated myself to wearing a low-impact sports bra. I didn’t want underwire ruining my great yoga comeback.

On my second set of double-time jumping jacks, I felt something pop and then snap and whip my cheek. Initially I thought it was my shoulder coming out of its socket, but upon closer inspection, I saw that it was my bra strap.

After doing a few one-armed jumping jacks while holding myself in place, I frantically tied the flopping strap to the top part of the useless sports bra while running in place, hoping no one would notice.

Following the warm-up, we got into the actual yoga. Except, rather than gently easing our way into different poses, it was 30 minutes of rapid-fire moves, complete with words I’ve never heard before, including something that sounded like “Cheddarumba.” This was working for everyone else, given that, unlike myself, they had placed themselves in a class at the correct level. Eventually I just got down on all fours and raised one limb at a time while looking down at the floor, trying not to draw attention to myself.

To my relief, eventually we did stay in one place holding poses, while Baldwin walked around inspecting. She got to me and stopped.

I braced myself, positive I was going to get asked to leave a yoga class for the third time and immediately started babbling and apologizing. Baldwin wasn’t fazed at all. With an encouraging smile, she moved my hips into a much more comfortable position and then complimented my leggings before moving on. Given this was the first time I had ever worn my yoga leggings to an actual yoga class, I was pretty pleased with myself.

Just when I thought I was going to pass out and/or cry, the lights dimmed and we were instructed to get down on our mats. I know this was the point when we were supposed to meditate or something, but all I could focus on was how there were probably 100 barefoot sweaty people in this room, but it somehow didn’t smell like feet. (Frankly, an impressive accomplishment.)

Afterward, I thanked Baldwin for being so welcoming during my not-so-triumphant return to yoga, rolled up my mat and put the brick (I never did figure out what it was for) back on the shelf. The class was fun, Baldwin was delightful, and if yoga was my thing, I'd be a regular. For now, though, I'll stick with being the worst person at yoga with the best leggings.

Shailene Woodley's Dakota Access Pipeline Plea Deal Is All About Her Privilege

Shailene Woodley was one of the most outspoken celebrity supporters of protesters at Standing Rock, North Dakota. She made several visits there herself to help water-protectors protest the construction of the Dakota Access Pipeline and even made headlines when she was arrested alongside a group of 26 other people who refused to leave a work site even after they were accused of trespassing. Woodley streamed her arrest on Facebook Live, and the video went viral.

Under President Donald Trump, pipeline construction has been ordered to move forward, and the fight for clean water on the Standing Rock Sioux reservation has come to a painful end. So has Woodley's legal battle. But for those who were arrested during the fight and don't have the legal resources Woodley has, the #NoDAPL saga still is still ongoing.

Woodley just took a plea deal following her October arrest, pleading guilty to one count of disorderly conduct. According to TMZ, who obtained Woodley's court papers, she'll serve one year of unsupervised probation.

Meanwhile, the New Yorker reports, hundreds of indigenous people who were arrested at Standing Rock are still awaiting justice. Morton County, where most of those arrested are facing trial, has been inundated with the 600 or so people who were arrested during pipeline protests, when normally, it sees a much smaller caseload. Indigenous protestors have had their court dates suddenly canceled, leaving them wondering how long they'll have to live with the stress and anxiety of the charges hanging over their heads.

"If I’m going to have to go to jail, I’d like to get it over with," protester Allisha LaBarge, a member of the Mandan, Hidatsa and Arikara Nation, told the New Yorker.

Apparently Brown has been beefing up for his upcoming role in the Predator revival, and he's clearly killing it. Alongside the pic, he wrote, "So, I've been working on @the_predator_movie with the wonderful @_trevante_ , & try as I might to believe otherwise...that brother reminds me everyday that I'm 40 years old," giving a shout out to his co-star, Trevante Rhodes, and continuing, "Even still...thanks for the inspiration young man. It is greatly appreciated!"

Followers were as shook as we were, and left all kinds of thirst in the comments, writing things like, "40 and FINE," "Hot damn" and "I hope your wife makes you sleep on the couch tonight for showing off her goodies... THOT THOT THOT!"

Brown isn't even the first This Is Us star to get some online attention for being mad fine. In the series premiere, Milo Ventimiglia showed his bare butt, and that was so popular, the show's producer joked during a press tour that he was going to work Ventimiglia's (ahem) assets into every episode. Unfortunately that didn't happen, so enjoy Brown's goods instead.

Breastfed Kids Don't Necessarily Have an Advantage, Study Finds

We all know that breastfeeding provides numerous physical and emotional benefits to both mother and baby. And for years, many medical professionals, breastfeeding supporters and mothers have believed that breast milk can give children a cognitive advantage over those who are not breastfed. This argument has provided plenty of fuel for debate between the “breast is best” and “fed is best” communities.

But now, a new study published in the journal Pediatrics finds that breastfeeding has little impact on long-term cognitive development and behavior, meaning a child’s cognitive development is the same at 5 years old regardless of whether they were breast or bottle fed, the researchers found.

More: Mom Wishes She Had Never Breastfed, and We Can Relate

The study, which started with infants at 9 months old, looked at the behavior, vocabulary level and cognitive ability of 7,478 children in Ireland at age 3 and 5 and analyzed in relation to whether or not they had been breastfed. The researchers linked breastfeeding with improved problem-solving and reduced hyperactivity in children at age 3, but not at age 5.

According to NPR, the results determined that overall, breastfed kids scored a tad higher. "But [the difference] wasn't big enough to show statistical significance," says study author Lisa-Christine Girard, a child-development researcher at University College Dublin. In other words, the differences in scores were so small that researchers consider it a statistical wash. "We weren't able to find a direct causal link between breastfeeding and children's cognitive outcomes," Girard says.

Maybe this new information will help mothers who did not (or could not) breastfeed feel a little bit better about their decision. Because let’s face it, with so many people giving out “what’s best for baby” tips, new moms are already prone to worry over every choice they are making — and who could blame them? So, consider this further evidence of what should have been clear all along. Whether you breastfeed, formula feed, pump and feed or combo feed, all that really matters is that your baby is fed, nurtured, cared for and loved.

When I first spotted Zahra Aljabri, she was cradling her sweet 5-month-old daughter, Tasneem, at a table of 25 other female entrepreneurs. The breakfast was to honor and connect women in various stages of starting their own businesses, and Aljabri fit right in considering that last year, she won SheKnows Media's The Pitch competition at its annual BlogHer conference, which draws some of the most inspiring and visionary female entrepreneurs. Aljabri's company, Mode-sty, offers a brilliant service to women: Modest clothing that's also modern and stylish — at a totally affordable price.

A former civil rights lawyer who fought employment discrimination at a nonprofit (and ran her own practice too), Aljabri is now a mom of three beautiful kids: Mus'ab, age 6; Thanaa, age 3; and Tasneem. As a mother of two daughters and a super-successful entrepreneur, I wanted to find out more about what inspires Aljabri and how she keeps juggling her many varied commitments — check out what she shared, below.

SheKnows: How does your family inspire you to pursue your career ambitions — and how do you balance both?

Zahra Aljabri: My husband is my biggest champion and supporter. He encourages me and challenges me to push harder. Since having children, I'm driven to be a role model for them to see me as a mother and working woman. Of course, it's a constant balancing act and having support is the way I'm able to juggle it all.

ZA: I want them to know that you can't let what other think or say limit you.

SK: What was the hardest lesson you learned during the process of launching and growing Mode-sty?

ZA: Ignoring the voice in my head saying I can't or shouldn't start my own company. I still battle the doubt constantly and developing a self-love and self-care plan has been the hardest lesson to internalize. It's me driving this initiative forward, and if I don't take care of me, I can't take care of anything or anyone else.

SK: What do you wish everyone knew about women who choose to dress modestly?

ZA: I wish people understood that dressing modestly doesn't mean you're dull or limited in life experience. It's just a presence for the way you dress. It doesn't mean you're a prude or necessarily have conservative political values.

SK: How do you talk to your kids about the political state of the country and world?

ZA: We talk about difference and tolerance. Through Mode-sty, I'm working on bringing diverse women together through their shared love of modest fashion, which I believe is important to impacting positive political change.

Eating Less Salt Could Mean Fewer Nighttime Bathroom Breaks

$

We’ve all experienced one really great dream that we wish could’ve kept going if only it weren’t interrupted by the need to go. Research has shown that an overarching age range of people wake up to pee at least once — perhaps even more — during the nighttime. This phenomenon is known as nocturia, which is basically the scientific way to say that your bladder doesn’t go to sleep when you do.

One in 3 adults over the age of 30 have to get up and go multiple times throughout the night, but the urge can occur at any age. And while the cause could be automatically related to liquid intake, recent studies have shown that reducing your salt intake can actually help deal with nocturia and decrease the number of times you have to pee at night.

More: 13 Annoying Things That Happen When You're Trying to Sleep

A study conducted by Tomohiro Matsuo, from Nagasaki University Hospital and Nagasaki University in Japan was the first study to measure how salt intake affects the frequency of going to the bathroom, so he noted that more research needs to be done in this area to confirm the results.

More than 200 people in this study successfully reduced their salt intake, going from a reported 11 grams per day to 8 grams per day. And with that reduction, it was found that the average number of nighttime bathroom trips decreased from 2.3 to 1.4 times a night, as well as the general number of people that needed to go.

This study goes to show that our healthy decisions may be much more beneficial than we think. Since waking up in the middle of the night not only affects our beloved dreams, but realistically could induce stress, irritability and tiredness and could affect your quality of life, these findings are a step in the right direction for both our sleep and our lifestyle choices.

Spring Cleaning Time! 8 Fresh Ways to Unload Used Toys

$

Spring is here, and with it, the need for a good spring cleaning. It's time to declutter, and for most of us that means unloading unwanted toys. Kids amass so many playthings, it’s impossible to manage them all. And as your kids' tastes change, their old toys collect dust on the shelves, under the bed, scattered throughout every room...

Here are a few different ways to get rid of your kids’ castoffs and discover all the floor space you've been missing.

Tom’s of Maine #LessWasteChallenge: Tom’s of Maine and the recycling experts at TerraCycle have created the #LessWasteChallenge, a toy recycling program which aims to reduce waste. The great thing is, they'll take your broken toys and recycle them so they don’t wind up in the trash. All you have to do is grab a free UPS shipping label from tomsofmaine.com/lesswaste, fill a box with up to 10 pounds of broken toys, affix the label and drop at UPS. Simple!

More: 7 Clutter-Busting Ideas For When You Have Small Kids

CPS/Public Agencies: In many areas, foster agencies and/or CPS will pick up gently used toys, stuffed animals and gaming systems for foster children. Check your region for program specifics. In Los Angeles, the Department of Social Services has a nonprofit called Toy Loan, which accepts new and gently used toys.

Brick Recycler: Genius. Mail your pieces (in sets or mixed up) via UPS or FedEx, and Brick Recycler will sort and distribute them to children in need. They’ve sent those little plastic bricks of goodness everywhere from Zimbabwe to Flint, Michigan. Another great group distributing LEGOs is Play Well Africa, which sends the building bricks to educational environments in Uganda, Kenya and Botswana. Save your feet and bring joy to children. Win-win!

Toy Swaps:  Moms Club chapters usually host swaps throughout the year. Can’t find an organization hosting? Set one up yourself! Get the word out and invite parents to drop off their goods at your place ahead of time. On the day of, set out the toys and let everyone choose what they’d like! Swaps are great because you can surrender the things your kids no longer play with and grab a few new-to-them toys. Just don’t invite your kids to the swap; they don’t need to see who was actually behind their giant stuffed unicorn’s disappearance.

Online Neighborhood Groups: Facebook neighborhood groups and sites like NextDoor let you advertise free (or for sale) items to your neighbors, a nice way to keep things local.

Local Refugee Organizations: Groups helping refugees resettle often accept gently used toys. There’s a great organization in my Los Angeles neighborhood called Miry's List, and they create Amazon lists based on the needs of new arrivees, but they also take pre-loved items. Fill out an item donation form, and get your things rehomed.

Amazon’s Give Back Box: Amazon has teamed up with Goodwill to launch a new program, Give Back Box. After you unpack your Amazon purchase, fill up the cardboard shipping box with your unwanted household items, including toys. Then go to GiveBackBox and print a free shipping label. UPS or USPS will deliver your box of donations to Goodwill! Easy-peasy.

Memorialize Your Stuff: Maybe you (or your kids) have a sentimental attachment to some of that clutter. Perhaps you’d like to remember art projects, but not keep every single thing that comes home from school. New company 4ever Bound will turn piles of your kids’ paintings, notes, drawings, etc. into a neat hardcover book. Likewise, Project Repat takes your old baby & children’s clothing and creates a keepsake quilt! Even more space freed up with no guilt over tossing out special childhood items.
