NBC Was So Worried About Ratings, They Called Savannah Guthrie to Save the Day

When Savannah Guthrie returned to Today early from her maternity leave, she said it was because she just couldn't wait to get back to work.

More: Matt Lauer Was Basically All of Us While Talking to Kellyanne Conway

But we had our own theories, and now, rumors are starting to get around about another possible reason for Guthrie's early return. NBC's ratings were plummeting, and in a panic, network execs ordered her back to work to give ratings a boost.

"The show was in a free fall. She initially announced that she’d be returning on March 3, but they were in a panic... and called her back early," an insider told Page Six.

In Guthrie's absence, Lester Holt and Bryant Gumbel filled in alongside her co-host, Matt Lauer, but the source said that wasn't doing anything to boost the network.

"Their bro-show didn’t work," the insider said. "They needed Savannah to bail them out, so they rushed her from maternity leave. NBC claimed it was because of the influx of news, but the reality is that the show was down double-digits and they needed her."

But even after Guthrie's surprise early return to work, ABC retained its lead in the ratings. In a press release, the network announced, "‘Good Morning America’ delivers largest total viewer lead over ‘Today’ in 14 months."

Still, an NBC source fired back by pointing out that ABC had the Oscars, which usually give the network a big boost.

"GMA has been down double-digits in the key demo [ages 25 to 54] for months while Today has been posting gains," the source explained. "Last week, ABC had the Oscars broadcast, which historically gives GMA a huge boost."

A Today rep added that the show has "been No. 1 in the key demo for 20 straight months, its best winning streak in more than four years, and its advantages over GMA have reached five-year highs."

Anne Hathaway Speaks Out Against US Paltry Parental Leave

Anne Hathaway has never been afraid to speak her mind.

Yesterday, Hathaway took a strong stance against U.S. parental leave policies in a speech she delivered to the United Nations. Not a bad way to spend International Women's Day. Not bad at all. The best part? She was advocating for men too. See? This is feminism — we want everyone to succeed.

“Somehow we and every American parent were expected to be back to normal in under three months without income,” she said. “I remember thinking to myself, ‘If the practical reality of pregnancy is another mouth to feed in your home and America is a country where most people are living paycheck to paycheck, how does 12 weeks of unpaid leave economically work?’ The truth is for too many people it doesn’t.”

More: Anne Hathaway's baby boy has a refreshingly normal name

We wish more celebrities would use their fame to amplify issues that affect families in detrimental ways. Go, Anne!

So how bad is parental leave in the U.S.? Pretty appalling compared to much of the rest of the world. Currently, U.S. law insists that women receive 12 weeks of unpaid leave (did you catch that "unpaid" part?). Paid leave? Dream on — there's no mandate for such a thing in America. In fact, even though some progressive companies offer it, only 14 percent of Americans have any kind of paid family leave. And if you're a low-income worker, your chances of paid family leave dwindle to almost nothing, according to the Bureau of Labor Statistics. Men also find themselves on the short end of the stick — with most employers still only recognizing the need for mothers, not fathers, to take time off for family reasons like illness or a new child.

“The assumption and common practice that women and girls look after the home and the family is a stubborn and very real stereotype that not only discriminates against women, but limits men’s participation and connection within the family and society," Hathaway said.

More: Anne Hathaway couldn't care less about the obsession with losing "post-baby weight"

Now a U.N. goodwill ambassador, she believes this situation is completely untenable for most families. She spoke about her own family's experiences:

“My mother had to choose between a career and raising three children, a choice that left her unpaid and underappreciated as a homemaker because there just wasn’t support for both paths,” she said.

Hathaway's father was the family’s sole earner — meaning she rarely saw him growing up.

“How many of us here today saw our dads enough growing up?” she asked at the United Nations. “How many of you dads here see your kids enough now? We need to help each other if we are going to go grow.”

I Got Anti-Aging Lip Injections, and I’ve Never Looked Younger

OK, be honest—what comes to mind when you think of lip injections? Probably mixed images of Kylie Jenner, Courtney Love, and a pufferfish, right? And, hey, that’s fair, because fillers have gotten a pretty bad rap over the last few decades for being one of the most obvious (and most easily botched) of cosmetic procedures.

But thanks to two new, FDA-approved fillers that promise to deliver incredibly natural-looking results, lip injections are now growing in popularity as a preventive, anti-aging measure, rather than the va-va-voom lip plumper they’ve always been known as. And because I would very much like for my mouth to look young forever, I decided to test out the new fillers and see just how natural—or crazy—I would look.

Anti-Aging Lip Injections
Image: ImaxTree

I am to first say that thin lips were never much of a concern for me, so I really never saw myself getting injections. But, as Los Angeles dermatologist Annie Chiu (who is one of the first dermatologists in the country to use Refyne and Defyne, the latest fillers on the US market) pointed out when I spoke with her, “Injections are now more about maintenance, and less about enhancement.” According to Chiu, our lips start deflating when we hit 30, and then continue to thin out and head downhill from there—literally. Our mouths start losing structure as we age, which leads to downturned lips, ‘marionette’ lines (the deep parenthesis-like wrinkles on either side of your mouth), and even bone loss at the jawline. “But if you soften those changes with fillers [early on], you change the visual cues of how you and other people perceive your age,” says Chiu. Basically, fillers are the new fountain of youth.

And just as Botox has slowly shifted from being the thing dads get during midlife crises to the thing twenty-somethings get to prevent wrinkles, lip fillers are now being recommended to keep mouths looking young, and it’s all thanks to Refyne and Defyne. The new fillers (which have been used in Canada and Europe for years, but have just been approved by the FDA) are hyaluronic-based formulas that have a new ability to blend in with your own collagen and flex naturally beneath your skin, without that stiff, “did she just get her lips done?” look.

Anti-Aging Lip Injections
Image: ImaxTree

Despite the glowing promises, though, I asked Chiu to start me off with only the tiniest bit of filler, just in case the process went horribly, horribly wrong. Chiu started by correcting the scaffolding of my face, injecting Defyne (used for filling deep-set lines) into my marionette lines, the corners of my lips, and around my jaw, before injecting Refyne (used for plumping fine lines and folds) into four quadrants around my lips, using a long, tiny tube inserted beneath my skin to position the injections further from my actual lips, which helps prevent crazy bruising and swelling.

It sounds awful, but the prick of the needle felt like any other—not exactly pleasant, but not particularly painful, either. That is, until she directly injected filler into my lips in a few spots, which really, really hurt. Thankfully, the whole process was over rather quickly, and by the end of it, Chiu had injected less than 3/5 of a teaspoon into my face. In fact, the changes were so subtle, only Chiu, her assistant, and I could pinpoint what had gone down in that office, and only if we stared really closely at my mouth.

After the appointment, it took a few days for my lips to feel like themselves again, though I suspect those feelings were primarily psychosomatic—not even my best friend could tell I had anything done just hours after leaving the doctor’s office, which was exactly the effect I was going for. It’s been three weeks since my appointment, and mouth still has totally natural movements, with only the subtlest of extra smoothness, which I’m pretty sure only I can notice.

Anti-Aging Lip Injections
Image: ImaxTree

But even if I can’t see my fillers (which is a good thing), I like knowing that I have a new anti-aging strategy in place for the future. Yes, it kind of sounds like bullshit, but you can’t argue with research, which shows that these types of injections really do have a preventative effect on aging. “Studies have shown that treating the lips, the areas around the lips, and the smile lines with fillers may actually prevent wrinkle detention,” says Chiu, “So the process is preventative in that it acts like a mechanical force [against deep-set wrinkles].”

And while some people might scoff at using their rent money on something so subtle (a treatment like mine costs about $700, and lasts about a year, max), I personally see the value in keeping my 20-year-old face shape and smile for the rest of my life, if possible. Does it mean I’ll have to skip a few nights out during the year to afford subsequent treatments? Abso-fricken-lutely. But as I see it, all of the sleep I’ll get and the drinks I’ll skip during those nights will pack an anti-aging bonus all their own.

Charlie Hunnam's Workout Plan Is One We Can All Get Behind (No Pun Intended)

Charlie Hunnam knows how important it is to stay fit. And he also has the best workout routines we've ever heard of: bangin' on the regular.

In an interview with Men's Health, Hunnam revealed the ways he keeps his hot bod, and while Hunnam kind of definitely has a few weird ideas re: fitness and the way bodies work, sign us up for one part of his workout routine: trying to "make love" as often as possible.

"That’s an important part of fitness," he said, adding. "There’s no reason you can’t be active at 70. I want to run up mountains at that age."

OK, well, let's put "running up mountains" in the "maybe" column.

More: Charlie Hunnam Still Regrets Quitting Fifty Shades of Grey

Unfortunately, the between-the-sheets workouts are in addition to running, swimming, jumping rope, hiking and jiu-jitsu, none of which are nearly as fun, but hey, looking that good takes at least a little sacrifice.

"We are supposed to be very active animals," he continued (emphasis on the "animal" part, yeah?).

"It’s our DNA," he added. "Sweating is how I change my oil every day. I just feel happier, more positive, energized, and disciplined if I work out."

Not to be the naysayer, here, but sex isn't a huge calorie burner, according to science. Men's Health actually released an article on that a few years back, about a study that showed that sex burns less than half as many calories as moderate jogging, making it better than no activity at all, but still not great as far as cardio goes.

More: Charlie Hunnam's Comments About Fifty Shades Were Just a Low Blow

Still, Hunnam has been with his current girlfriend for over a decade, and if he's been making sex a big part of his workout for that long and looks as good as he does, maybe there is actually something to it.

Male Gynecologists On How They Chose Their Specialty

$

When it came time to make my first appointment with a gynecologist, I had but one request: that the doctor was a woman.

My mother paused and looked at me, genuinely surprised by my stipulation.

“Elizabeth, I’ve always gone to a male gynecologist,” she informed me. “You were delivered by a male obstetrician. Trust me, when you’re giving birth you don’t care who is delivering the baby, as long as they’re doing a good job.”

Right, I thought, but I’m an anxious teenager and not about to deliver a baby any time soon.

I had read enough articles in Seventeen and YM to know that your first trip to the gynecologist was going to be embarrassing and painful, and they’d make you sit in what looked like a torture device while probing and prodding you on the inside. There was no way I was going to go through that with anyone who hadn’t experienced that exam themselves.

More: Startling Rise in Babies Born With Syphilis

It wasn’t that I thought male OB-GYNs were in any way less competent or qualified — it was just a matter of doing what made me feel most comfortable in an otherwise uncomfortable situation.

And I’m hardly alone. In a 2005 survey, 28 percent of women reported that they preferred going to a female OB-GYN, while only 6 percent preferred their OB-GYN to be male.

But it appears that the largest group of women — 66 percent, to be exact — were much more open-minded than I am and had no gender bias when it came to selecting an OB-GYN. At least odds are in my favor, though. Women currently make up around 85 percent of OB-GYN residents.

Personal preferences aside, I’ve always wondered how men end up as OB-GYNs. What made them pick that specialization? I spoke with a few male OB-GYNs to find out.

For some, like Dr. Gerardo Bustillo, gynecologist and medical director of minimally invasive surgery at Orange Coast Memorial Medical Center in Fountain Valley, California, it’s in the genes. His mother worked as an OB-GYN in her native Cuba and his older sister is an OB-GYN and fertility expert.

For others, it came down to interest and seeking a long-term medical relationship with patients.

Dr. Marc Winter, gynecologist and medical director of minimally invasive surgery at Saddleback Memorial Medical Center in Laguna Hills, California, knew he wanted to be a doctor and work in an environment where he could help people. His second rotation in medical school was in obstetrics and gynecology, and he was surprised at how much he enjoyed working in that area.

“As opposed to general surgery, I liked the idea of taking care of women over a long period of time and having the opportunity to develop long-term relationships,” Winter told SheKnows.

Dr. Thomas Ruiz, an OB-GYN with MemorialCare Medical Group in Fountain Valley, California, also saw the benefit of working with patients on a long-term basis.

More: 39 and Pregnant... With Colon Cancer

“I manage women from their teens through their menopause and aging,” Ruiz explained. “My patients are generally healthy, so even when they become sick, they most often recover.

"When the disease process for my patients requires a procedure, there is generally a full recovery with improved quality of life.”

Unsurprisingly, getting to deliver babies is a popular part of the job.

“Delivering babies was a huge surprise, as I had never been exposed to it,” Winter said. “I loved being involved in mostly positive medicine and also enjoyed the challenge of dealing with the occasional true emergency during childbirth since I was able to stay calm and do what needed to be done.”

Ruiz agreed, noting that it is “also very satisfying to hand over a new life to parents” and that “obstetrics is for the most part a very happy specialty.”

But what about the question of gender and patient relations? In each of the doctors’ experiences, they have been successfully able to relate to their patients, despite never having had a period or giving birth.

Ruiz said that initially some of his patients were reluctant to see him, but after the consult, “the gender barrier melts away.” He also noted that, “as a male provider, my empathy allows me to be nonthreatening to my patients.”

Being male was irrelevant for Winter, as was the fact that his practice would only take care of women; his thought was only in terms of what he would be doing and being successful helping people.

“Most neurosurgeons never had a brain tumor, most cardiologists do not have severe heart disease, most psychiatrists do not have schizophrenia, etc.,” Winter pointed out. “If I was having surgery, I would want the best surgeon in that specialty to perform the operation regardless of gender, and I think most women feel that way.”

The bottom line is that each doctor wants to ensure that patients receive the best care possible.

“Life today is all about choice,” Bustillo said. “It's wonderful that today's woman has the option of having her reproductive health needs provided by one of countless excellent female OB-GYNs throughout the country.”

Breastfeeding Women Are Shamed by Police

$

It is unbelievable that people are still shaming moms for nursing their babies in (gasp!) public. At the very least, aren't these people aware that someone will write a Facebook post about them?

Here's what happened: Tiara Wilson, along with some other mom friends, decided to celebrate International Pancake Day (yes, it's a thing) by eating at the International House of Pancakes (as you do). But when three of the moms began breastfeeding their babies at the table, a family (who had just came in) starting harassing them.

More: Why Moms Breastfeed in Public

Wilson writes on Facebook, "While breastfeeding, that same family of 3 that was sitting next to us, decided to snap a picture of us feeding our babies. He decided to make disgusting faces and snarky little remarks to his family. Then his family decided to take photos and decided that they would sit there the whole time and mean mug and again make nasty faces as everyone FED their babies."

One of the moms alerted the manager who then contacted police in an apparent attempt to stop the harassment. The family even tried to leave before police arrived but the manager wouldn't let them.

But when the two officers arrived, they didn't help the moms at all. According to Wilson, the police officer said, "Go to the bathroom or use a cover if you don't want to be bothered or have pictures snapped while feeding."

This, naturally, did not sit well with Wilson. She wrote: "Do you eat your food in the bathroom? No. Are you eating under a blanket? No. DO NOT TELL A MOTHER, that she needs to go to the bathroom during an outing with friends to feed her little one. I am just in true disbelief that people still think it's okay to have a mother feeding in a place where we use the bathroom. How is that even sanitary?"

Thank you, Tiara Wilson! It is ridiculous to encourage a nursing mom to sit on a toilet to feed her child so strangers don't have to accidentally catch a sliver of boob.

More: Pope Francis Encourages Women to Breastfeed in the Sistine Chapel

Angry moms are now voicing their objections to how the officers reportedly behaved on the Aurora Police Department Facebook page. Some are pointing out how ironic it is that just a day after this incident, the department publicly saluted the women members of their agency for International Women's Day.

One woman wrote on Facebook, "If you respect the women in your agency, you should respect the women in your community who are simply choosing to feed their babies."

The department says they're looking into what happened at the IHOP. Wilson hopes the department learns from this experience and continues to educate their officers. I happen to think these officers owe these superstar moms a public apology, at the very least, and a big stack of free pancakes.

Who Seems to Be Rebranding Their Image on Survivor: Game Changers?

Survivor: Game Changers premiered last night, and the 500th episode brought all of the regular magic of the 17-year-old reality series, from the chaotic grab for goodies at the start of the game to the high-stress tribal councils where strategies and loyalties already ran deep and wide.

This season is a collection of returning players, all of whom have been dubbed "game changes" — people who have evolved the Survivor playing strategy, people who have made shocking moves and people who have turned on even their closest allies. As host Jeff Probst explained in the opening segment, some of the game changers have met with success in the past, and others have been sunk by their strategies.

The first episode was a window into how these highly cerebral players are going to enter this season of the game. While some were going for their tried-and-true strategies, others seemed to be rebranding (or telling others they have changed). Let's take a look at the first chess moves of a few key players.

Sarah Lacina is playing good cop, bad cop

Sarah Lacina took a lot of flak for even being included in Game Changers. She was voted off relatively early on her first appearance, in Survivor: Cagayan, and came off as someone who was too loyal and who had trouble reading the field. For this season, the law enforcement officer claims that she is going to try and keep her good cop persona on the surface, but play a very different game on the ground. She claimed she was going to be a "silent assassin" and "play like a criminal, not like a cop." Only time will tell, but viewers don't seem convinced.

Ciera Eastin came out of the gates running

Ciera Eastin, who appeared in both Season 27 and Season 31 of Survivor definitely opted for a rebrand last night. The player, who was perhaps known best for voting for her own mother, seemed determined to be more aggressive and more driven this time around, openly suggesting who should go from the Mana tribe seemingly seconds after everyone was off of the boat. Her strategy certainly didn't pay, as the 27-year-old was blindsided at the first Tribal Council and jettisoned from the game first.

Tony Vlachos went full Tony

Tony Vlachos came into the game with a big reputation from Season 28 (which he won), and he seemed pretty aware that he wasn't going to be able to hide his true colors and big personality from anyone. His rebrand was just an amplification, as he pulled all stops immediately. In the opening minutes, he was breaking from the tribe to explore, digging a spy bunker and testing the waters for early alliances. Sadly, his aggressive go-big-or-go-home strategy led to him going home, during the second tribal council of the night. He tried to throw down against Sandra Diaz-Twine, and he went down in flames.

Tai Trang wants to put flip-flopping behind him

The second runner-up from Survivor Season 32 is hoping that the rest of the players don't remember his loyalty issues of the past and no longer consider him a flip-flopper. But although he was working hard on his loyalty rebrand in the first episode, he was also up to some of his old habits, including his attachments to the camp's chickens. While he seemed to think that taking care of the livestock would help his chances, others already seemed annoyed at some of his old antics.

Sanda Diaz-Twine's not fixing what isn't broken

While many of the cast members seemed to be trying new strategies and new images on for size this season, two-time winner Sandra Diaz-Twine seemed to be keeping just as cool and collected as ever during the opening episode. Despite having a target on her back because of her past successes, she rolled through the first two eliminations with a smoothness that makes it clear why many consider her to be the best player in the history of the game. She even threw her weight around with Tony Vlachos during the second half of the season premiere without getting burned. With a golden reputation and a track record to match, why change?

Brie Larson's Dig at Casey Affleck Was So Subtle, You May Have Missed It

Brie Larson is living proof that actions speak louder than words.

More: Constance Wu is Going In on the Oscars for Nominating Casey Affleck

Larson, who won Best Actress at the 2016 Oscars, followed tradition to be the one to present the Oscar for Best Actor at the next year's ceremony. When Casey Affleck was the winner, she had a chance to make a pretty bold statement.

When Affleck came to the stage to pick up his trophy, Larson gave him a quick hug, but that was the end of any affection she showed for him. She then stood to the side of the stage and didn't clap at any point during or after his acceptance speech for the award.

And now, Larson has confirmed that her cold reaction to Affleck's win is because of the controversy that's resurfaced during awards season over 2010 allegations that he sexually harassed women on the set of I'm Still Here, which he directed.

"I think that whatever it was that I did onstage kind of spoke for itself. I’ve said all that I need to say about that topic," Larson told Vanity Fair. Ironic that her choice not to applaud Affleck has us applauding her.

Larson has presented Affleck with a number of awards this season, and she's been noticeably cold toward him each time. When she awarded him with the Golden Globe for Best Actor, she kept her distance from him and didn't clap then, either.

It's definitely worth noting that Larson won her 2016 Best Actress Academy Award for her role in Room, where she played a sexual assault survivor. She took the role seriously, meeting with psychologists to get a better sense of the trauma her character had been through and shutting herself off from the world for an entire month to understand the isolation required for the role.

You Use Natural Remedies on Yourself — Why Not Use Them on Your Pet?

While it's always important to get your pet to the vet when you suspect there's something up with their health, homeopathic remedies administered at home are also a great way to enrich the lives of our animals.

More: Our Favorite Superfood Spice Should Be Added to Your Dog's Diet

Herbal tinctures and natural health aids can do wonders for pet health, and building an all-natural medicine cabinet for your dog or cat is not nearly as difficult as you might think. Here are some herb and plant basics to get your started — but please remember to always check with your vet before giving your pet anything new.

1. Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy is homeopathic tincture made from flower essences developed by Dr. Edward Bach. The product is particularly helpful for stress. Whether your animal suffers from separation anxiety, stress from a recent move or even the death of another pet or an owner, Rescue Remedy can help.

Rescue Remedy comes in drops or spray, and is available at most natural food stores like Whole Foods or Sprouts. You can also purchase online here.

2. Aloe vera

aloe

aloe

Just like with humans, the aloe vera plant is helpful for skin issues in animals. Aloe vera is great for soothing your pet's skin if they have hot spots or an allergic reaction, according to The American Animal Hospital Association via The Nest.

However, ingesting aloe vera can be harmful for dogs and cats and might result in nasty case of diarrhea. To be safe, be sure to bandage the area you apply aloe vera to your pet, and provide adequate supervision to ensure they don't lick it off. You also want to be careful to only apply the gel part of the plant. The white sap around the edges contain latex, which can also be harmful.

Aloe can be purchased by the bottle at many stores, but it's best — and more cost effective — to just get a plant and break open the leaves yourself.

3. Calendula

Calendula oil's antimicrobial and wound-healing properties make it a must-have for treating minor cuts, insect bites, abrasions, eczema and poison ivy, according to natural-dog-health-remedies.com. It can also be used on sprains and bruises, as an eye wash for conjunctivitis, or for the treatment of inflammation or ulceration of the digestive or urinary tracts.

You can purchase calendula extract formulated especially for pets on Amazon here.

4. Hypericum (St. John’s Wort)

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, St. John's Wort helps to reduce anxiety, depression and psychological stress in cats and dogs — so it comes in real handy during thunderstorms and visits to the groomer or vet.

VCA also says that scientists have identified a chemical basis for the herb's ability to relieve pain in a way similar to opiates, so St. John's Wort is very useful for pain management in dogs and cats. In addition, "topical application of the essential oil prepared from St. John's Wort may help with mild contusions, muscle aches, and minor skin irritations."

St. John's Wort should not be used in conjunction with any other medications, so be sure to check with your vet before giving any to your pet.

5. Echinacea

According to Dogs Naturally magazine, echinacea can work wonders in helping to support your pet's immune system. However, it can be harmful for dogs who suffer from immune mediated diseases, so check with your vet.

You can buy echinacea formulated for dogs and cats on Amazon here.

6. Arnica

Arnica is sometimes referred to as "homeopathic aspirin." It can be used after any injury, trauma or overexertion. It has been used to reduce pain and can promote healing after surgery. It's also said to work wonders in dogs with arthritis, says thisolddog.com.

Always be sure to talk with your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your pet’s health. Some herbs and natural remedies that are completely safe for humans can be toxic to dogs and cats, so do your research before giving your pet something new. Just like with medications, allergic reactions can occur even if some herbs or remedies are technically considered safe.

How Michelle Obama Changed One Indian Girl's Life Years Before She Was First Lady

While the nation may or may not be going straight to hell in a handbasket, Barack Obama has been single-handedly communicating that we should all just chill and trust the process. Mostly, he’s been doing that with his clothes. Did you catch him in that leather jacket? How about on vacation? Obama seems to have just one thing to say to all of those presidential get-ups: Goodbye to all that. To which we say, "fair enough."

But yesterday, in honor of International Women’s Day, Obama shared a letter he and Michelle Obama received when they “came back from vacation.” (As an aside, Donald Trump failed at International Women’s Day, but that should surprise no one.) “I’m proud of Michelle for the difference she made in this young woman’s life, and I’m inspired by Sindhu’s story — so I thought I’d share it with you today,” he wrote.

“Read to the end (you won’t regret it) and please add your voice,” he continued on Medium, linking to his Obama Foundation. “We want to hear from you, too,” he wrote. And then, because he’s the best, he finished his note, “Happy International Women’s Day, Barack.” Anyone else feel like this is a personal valentine addressed to women around the country? Cool, same.

“On International Women’s Day, @MichelleObama and I are inspired by all of you who embrace your power to drive change,” the former president tweeted, linking out to the letter and message on Medium.

The letter, dated Jan. 21, was from a 38-year-old woman named Sindhu who shared a beautiful story about an inspiring experience she had with none other than Michelle Obama when she was just 17. Here’s the letter in its entirety — and let’s all take this as a powerful reminder of the impact we can have on one another when we lift each other up.

One day in Fall 1996, an idealistic 17-year old Indian girl was inspired while sitting in a chapel. She didn’t remember the name of the woman who spoke. But she will never forget the fire that was lit to make something of her life, and to use that life to serve others. That week, she signed up to be a volunteer at the hospital and signed up for an after-school program teaching creative writing and literature for underserved children in the community.

Twenty-one years later, that girl is now a 38-year old woman, a bit older in body, sometimes a bit jaded, but much younger in spirit. That woman fires up medical students to be passionate about behavioral sciences and psychiatry, serves children and adults struggling with mental illness, and continues an after-school outreach program to teach 6th graders about how to care for their mental health. That torch lit as a freshman at the University of Chicago continues to be ablaze.

That 17-year old was me. I later found out that the inspirational powerhouse of a woman who spoke was Michelle Obama.

I wanted to say thank you to the both of you. Thank you, Michelle, for helping a vulnerable teenager raised to comply to start to challenge the notion that she was powerless. Thank you, Michelle, for teaching by both words and example that the best uses of power and influence are in the service of others and our community. Thank you to both of you for your profound levels of activism within our community, leading up to a historic event that I did not think I would witness in my lifetime. Thank you for how you treated children, both your own and all of America’s, with kindness, humor, and spontaneity.

I am now a middle-aged Indian woman who is married to an Indian feminist man and raising a feminist 3-year old son (whose middle name is Atticus and who thinks he is actually Thomas the train.) They are amazing. The ways in which you have impacted the world have left me expecting so much more from our world. And I know that this is not an expectation I can have without being part of that change. The events from this week, this amazing women’s march, echoed globally that the expectations I have are not ones I hold in isolation. I want a different world. I need a different world.

So when you get back from your vacation, I wanted to let you know.

I’m in.

These High Schools Are Encouraging Daytime Naps

Four high schools in New Mexico are allowing teenagers to sleep during school.

Linda Summers, an associate professor in the School of Nursing at New Mexico State University, used money from mental health grants to buy sleep pods for the schools. The first pod was purchased in 2008 and more were bought in 2011. And almost right away, students were reporting that the quick trips to the pods helped them focus and combat anxiety.

More: Forget Sleepwalking: Teens are Texting in Their Sleep

In addition to the obvious benefit of increased sleep, Summers also found the pods had other perks for students and even some staff who escaped for some much-needed rest time.

“If they came to us and they were tired, we stuck them in there,” Summers said in an article for the Las Cruces Sun-News. “If they had a headache, we stuck them in there. If a teacher had high blood pressure, we stuck him in there.”

Summers said that of the 100 students who used it, 99 were able to return to class within 20 minutes — with tremendous increases in energy and mood.

And it’s easy to see why students experienced this increase in energy and mood. After all, most of them are not getting the recommended hours of sleep each night. According to the National Institutes of Health, teenagers need 9 to 10 hours of sleep every night, however, most are only averaging between 7 and 7.25 hours a night, which can lead to serious problems.

More: Yes, Teens' Brains Make Them Do Dumb Crap — But There's Hope

The physical, mental and behavioral consequences of chronic sleep deprivation are very real and can lead to increased moodiness, lack of concentration, an inability to self-regulate and an increase in risky behavior.

Considering all that’s at risk when teens don’t get enough sleep, maybe it’s time for more schools to take a look at installing a few of these high-tech nap machines.

The New Reese's Peanut Butter Cup Flavor Could Win Back Customers

I was pretty much obsessed with Reese's Peanut Butter Cups growing up, regularly spending my entire allowance on packs from the vending machine at the bowling alley where I was a league champion (just kidding, I sucked and spent all of my time sitting in a booth eating chocolate. Jealous?).

But now that I'm older, something's changed. It turns out there are a lot of other chocolate candy cups on the market, including vegan, organic and dark chocolate options, and many of them are equally delicious or — dare I say — even better than the classic Reese's.

That's why I'm wondering... is the new Reese's Crunchy Cookie Cup a ploy to take back its customers from the arms of their all-natural counterparts? Because honestly, it just might work.

More: No-bake chocolate-almond butter cups are ridiculously easy to make

The new cups are stuffed with a combo of peanut butter and crunchy chocolate cookie bits, then covered in (of course) chocolate, and you can get them in the regular two-cup or — for the truly committed — king-size Big Cup packages at grocery stores.

So, while I've lately been getting my chocolate nut butter cups fix from hippy-dippy brands like Justin's (I mean, you really can't go wrong with dark chocolate peanut butter cups) and EatingEvolved (caramel and sea salt coconut butter cups are so good I almost tear up thinking of them), I'm intrigued. Reese's, you just may have won back another customer.

5-Year-Old Finds Out He's Getting a New Heart

Get ready to cry all the tears. Don't worry; they're happy ones. They're the kind of tears you shed when you watch a 5-year-old baseball player being told he's finally going to get a new heart — after 211 days of waiting for a match.

heart transplant video

Ari Schultz loves baseball. What he doesn't love so much? IVs, and being poked. (He's no dummy.) His life has had more IVs than baseball games so far, as Ari was diagnosed with critical aortic stenosis when he was still in utero.

More: How to get the best care for your child at a hospital

On his family's website for their son, his parents wrote, "This meant if we didn’t intervene before he was born he would have only a two chamber heart. We did, indeed, intervene, first at 20 weeks of gestation, setting us on a wild and unexpected path.”

We'll cut to the chase: On March 3, after months and months of living as an inpatient at Boston Children's Hospital, a new heart was found for Ari. And his parents took video of the moment they told Ari the wait was finally over.

You will want your tissues. Move the cat, and put your Kleenex on your lap.

On Wednesday, Ari's parents posted news that the heart transplant was indeed a success. “As of now, he’s stable in the cardiac intensive care unit. He is deeply sedated and has a breathing tube in. He looks like he’s resting comfortably,” they said.

Ari's parents — and Ari — will always remember the donor who made it possible for Ari to start a new life (hopefully one packed full of baseball). His parents wrote on their YouTube page: “We are forever thankful for the donor and donor families' sacrifice, and will think about them every day for the rest of our lives,” they wrote. “Please, #DonateLife.”

Ari's not out of the woods. He'll need a lifetime of medication to protect him from his body rejecting the donor heart, and infection is always a possibility. His immune system will be compromised, a hard reality for his family.

Meanwhile: baseball. Think about Ari playing baseball. And rooting for the Red Sox. There, there, that's better. No, take another tissue. We totally understand.

Ciera Eastin Says She Originally Said No to Playing Survivor Again

Before Survivor: Game Changers even began, host Jeff Probst predicted that Ciera Eastin was a strong contender to win the $1 million. Sadly, her torch was the first to be snuffed out during the Season 34 two-hour premiere. We had the opportunity to chat with Eastin about her three seasons on Survivor when she explained why she originally didn't want to play again. Plus, she revealed which castaway is already standing out as the game's best player and dished her opinion on who doesn't really deserve to be considered a game changer.

SheKnows: Did you have any idea at that first Tribal Council that you were going to be voted off?

Ciera Eastin: I knew going into Tribal Council that it was either me or Michaela. It wasn't until Hali made the comment and said "loose lips sink ships" that I knew it was me. It was surreal. I honestly don't even think it hit me until the next day. I just felt like I was in a nightmare.

SK: What strategy did you have going into the game?

CE: I kind of wanted to play middle-of-the-road a little and really get to know everybody and make them think I was their best friend. It seems like such common-sense strategy, but it's the thing I struggle with because I tend to just cling to my friends or whoever I find.

SK: Who did you gravitate to the most those few days you were out there?

CE: Definitely Troyzan and Sandra. Troyzan is so genuine, and I really love his light-hearted spirit. It makes it so much easier to last a long time in the game with people that you genuinely enjoy being around. Obviously, Sandra is the queen. She's so charming, funny and good for camp morale. We just really clicked. I kind of just followed my gut. Like I said, it's such a long game you don't want to be stuck with people you can't stand.

SK: Going into the game, it was clear that Sandra and Tony had the biggest targets because of their status as dominant winners. Is it tough for you to understand why you were targeted first instead of them?

CE: I think there's so much of people wanting to keep the bigger threats around to keep the limelight off themselves. It's a great strategy to have. For somebody like Malcolm, those are great shields for him. I get why Malcolm wanted to get rid of someone like me, Aubry or Hali.

SK: How did you end up competing for a third time? Explain how you got on Game Changers.

CE: Oh, geez. When I got the call to potentially come back and film again, I actually said no originally. At that point, it was my third time in four years, and I was just having guilt about leaving my children again for another summer. My son is only 5, so three of his five summers I have spent away from him. I was like, "I can't do it. I need a break." Something was telling me, "This is not your season, Ciera. You need to take a break." My body was still adjusting, but I gained a lot of weight between Second Chances and Game Changers. My body hadn't fully got back to where I normally am yet. I needed a longer break, but I did it anyway. Part of me thought I didn't know if I'd ever get the opportunity again. I'm super-grateful to even be asked, so I did it. Obviously, now it's something I struggle with because my gut was telling me that I needed a little more time. I definitely think time would've done me good and will do me good moving forward.

SK: Would you do it again?

CE: I really hope and pray I get the opportunity to do it again. I know people are probably sick and tired of seeing and hearing from me. I know I have more to offer, and I think being voted out first really was a lesson for me. It put things in perspective for me, and I think it was just what I needed to come back in the next few years so I can win a season.

SK: You're the castaway most known for voting out your own mother in Season 27. After playing three times now, do you think that's your defining Survivor moment?

CE: No. I would like to think my defining moment is when we went to drawing rocks in Blood Vs. Water. That moment, for me, I went into that Tribal Council expecting to do whatever I needed to do to get me one more day. That's when I really transitioned because I don't want to play to last one more day. I'm gonna swing for the fences, and if I lose I go home. But if I get on the right side of this and it ends up good, I win. That was a total transition point for me and how I played my game. I don't want to play to last 38 days just to go home. I want to win. That, for me, was my favorite, defining moment for myself.

SK: Are you tired of hearing about the fact that you voted your mom off?

CE: No. I think it's funny. It's super-funny. It is the first time it's ever been done. I just think people didn't really expect it from someone like me. My mom wasn't this big character, and some people didn't even remember her. We're just two little women, so for us to make such a big statement that season, I felt like was pretty cool.

SK: The theme for this season is Game Changers. When you saw the other previous contestants selected to compete under that title, were you questioning if some of them even deserved to be there?

CE: For sure. Without a doubt. Michaela and Zeke, we didn't really know what they did. Then there's people like Debbie, Hali and, no offense, Brad Culpepper who I freaking adore, but these aren't people you would really put in the category of a game changer.

SK: On the flip side, do you think Sandra could actually win for her third time?

CE: For sure! She is the queen, and she freaking kills it. I'm so glad I got to play with her for the time I did to see what she does so well. On top of being charming and happy to be around, she has such a quality about her that people want her around. She can make these extreme comments and call herself the queen, and people just laugh at it thinking it's the funniest thing ever. She's so smart in the game and knows how to maneuver people and is in every relationship she needs to be in. If somebody is dumb enough to take Sandra to the end, she's winning it.

Ciera Eastin sits with Malcolm Freberg on Survivor: Game Changers
Image: CBS

SK: That being said, who is the most deserving player to win at this point?

CE: Malcolm. He was the one who pretty much controlled the vote. Everybody was going to Malcolm. He was in every conversation the first three days. Sandra was as well, but she wasn't as in control of this vote as Malcolm was. Based on just three days, Malcolm deserves to win. Who am I rooting for? I'm rooting for Brad Culpepper. I just think he's a great guy. I love his family. I think he has it in him to win now that he's not playing with Monica. He doesn't have that distraction this time. I think people aren't scared to take him to the end because they think he can't win. We've seen Brad rub people the wrong way, so maybe he's the person that people want to take to the end. I think they would be fools to because Brad could own his game. He had a lot of help from Monica on the social aspect, and I'm rooting for him to take home the win.

Why You Should Be Talking to Your Preschooler About Sex

$
0
0

Talking to your kids about anything relating to sex can be awkward. Talking about sensitive topics like sexuality isn’t easy, especially if you weren’t raised in a family that had these conversations. But awkward as you might feel, there are plenty of good reasons for diving into conversations about sex, reproduction and consent as early as preschool.

“Preschoolers have bodies and they are aware that there are societal rules in terms of which parts of your body you may display and you may not in public,” explains Dr. Gail Saltz, a psychiatrist and the author of The Power of Different. She has also written two books for children, Amazing You! Getting Smart About Your Private Parts and Changing You! A Guide to Body Changes and Sexuality.

It's important for parents to be the first source of information on topics related to sexuality according to Saltz. Kids begin talking about these topics early, and if you're there to provide correct information, you may avoid them learning things that aren’t true — and you can also establish yourself as a trusted source of information. Having these conversations early and often communicates to your child that they don’t have to be embarrassed to come to you with questions.

More: 9 Things We Really Need to Stop Saying to Our Kids, Stat

Starting the conversation isn’t easy, so don’t feel bad if you are a little embarrassed to bring it up or worry about saying too much on the topic. It is helpful to remember that the way you are thinking about sexuality isn’t the way your preschooler is thinking about it.

“Most parents end up feeling nervous because they are thinking with their adult mind and imagining things that they would not want their child to know yet,” says Saltz. “You are somehow imagining that this would be the information your child would be privy to, when they won’t. If you feel uncomfortable in the moment answering a question, it's OK to say, 'I’m not really sure but I will come back to you with information' and get yourself comfortable.”

So, how much do preschoolers need to know about sex? The good news is that it isn’t much — and that you can allow them to lead the conversation with their questions.

“Young preschoolers probably aren’t ready to hear about intercourse yet.” explains Saltz. “They’re not necessarily ready to hear about intercourse until it occurs to them that an egg is over here and a sperm is over there and they couldn’t really magically come together without something going on."

While Saltz says that developmentally, this idea doesn’t occur to most kids until later in elementary school, she also encourages parents to feel comfortable answering their questions if it does — because that's your child's way of telling you they're ready for a little more information.

Lastly, kids should really know that certain parts of their body are private and should only be touched by them. And if your kids want to touch their private parts, let them know that is OK, but it should be done in a private place.

Are you ready to get started? Using a book as a tool is a simple way to start open conversations. Saltz recommends using these books as a script if you are feeling especially uncomfortable.

Saltz's book, Amazing You! Getting Smart About Your Private Parts, is a great place to start talking about body parts with preschoolers. It's Not the Stork!: A Book About Girls, Boys, Babies, Bodies, Families and Friends by Robie H. Harris offers age-appropriate answers for any questions your child might have about the differences between girls and boys and how babies are made. If you are looking for an option for elementary-aged children, What’s the Big Secret?: Talking about Sex with Boys and Girls uses illustrations and age-appropriate language to talk about everything from body parts to masturbation.

More: Kids Socialize Virtually — and Spend Too Much Time Alone

As your kids approach late elementary, it is a good idea to get a head start on talks about puberty. According to Saltz, kids are experiencing changes in their body earlier — and these can be alarming if they aren’t expecting them. It's Perfectly Normal: Changing Bodies, Growing Up, Sex, and Sexual Health by Robie H. Harris and Saltz’s book Changing You! A Guide to Body Changes and Sexuality are both incredible resources for parents who need a little help approaching the topic of puberty.

Talking about puberty, sexuality and consent can feel uncomfortable at first, but talking with a preschooler or young elementary student is bound to be easier than bringing up the topic for the very first time with a tween. So crack open a book and set the record straight before a classmate beats you to it.

How to Tell a Friend They’re Being Cheated On

$

0

It’s deeply uncomfortable when you see a friend’s partner on Tinder, or making out or holding hands with another woman, or even hitting on you. WTF do you do? Sure, you don’t want to get involved and create drama in a close friend’s relationship, but on the other hand, you don’t want to let your friend think his or her S.O. is a committed partner if he or she is acting like a free agent. Ta-ricky.

Depending on exactly what evidence you have and how close you are to the cheated-upon friend or family member, maybe you feel like you have to tell them. Just know that “shooting the messenger” became an idiom for a reason, so, you’ll want to deliver it very carefully, and keep certain things in mind before making a move you can’t take back. Below are five things to consider before talking.

Trust Your Gut

How solid is the evidence that cheating actually occurred? Seeing a friend’s BF or GF on Tinder is not hard proof that they’re doing anything wrong. They could have an account just to swipe for fun with friends (and not act on it). Even if you see suspicious activity in person, it may not mean there’s foul play going on—many people have open relationships that they may keep private with their partners. So, avoid making assumptions, but do listen to your gut. “This is an important situation where you want to tap into your intuition,” says loveologist and sex educator Wendy Strgar, author of Love that Works: A Guide to Enduring Intimacy. “If you see the cheater doing something sketchy in person, is he or she avoiding eye contact with you?” Look for signs like this to help you pinpoint whether something truly shady is going on, before you proceed to the next steps.

Give the Cheater a Chance

If you determine that what went down is indeed eyebrow-raising enough that you have to say something, consider first approaching the cheater rather than your friend. “The first step should be going to the apparent cheater and giving him or her an opportunity to deal with it directly,” says Strgar. “Give the couple a chance to correct themselves on their own.” This is more about keeping yourself out of unnecessary drama than choosing the cheater over your friend. Confront him or her by saying something like, “I saw you with a woman at the bar on Saturday who was not Sarah—what was up with that?” If he or she can’t explain or defend the actions, or gets really uncomfortable and seems to scramble to come up with an excuse, and most especially, if he or she refuses to talk to your friend about it, that’s when it’s time to approach your friend yourself.

More: 3 Times It’s OK to Stay With a Cheater

Do It Face to Face

If you’re feeling kinda tempted to write your friend an email, text, or call her to deliver the bomb, think again. “If and when it’s time to go to the friend, do it in person face to face—not digitally,” says Strgar. “Drop by her house, meet for tea, or something similar. Avoid meeting at a bar and having too much booze. Your friend will likely need your support processing this news, so be sure to deliver it in a sensitive, gentle way. For instance, you could start by saying, ‘This is a really hard conversation to have, and I wish I didn’t have to be the one to tell you this, but if it were me, I’d want to know.’ Even though it’s going to suck to tell her something so hurtful, realize that you’re honoring her and the situation by doing her the courtesy of being with her when she finds out.

Share What You Know—Then Back Off

Since you’ve made the decision to tell your friend something painful and difficult about her relationship, realize that you’ve inserted yourself into a very private part of her life, and after you’ve given her the basic facts, your responsibility is done, and now your only job is to be there for her. Realize that her emotional response will likely go through phases (denial, anger, grief, etc.) and as such, she needs space to figure out her next move. One major thing not to do is to encourage her make any big decisions right now. Instead, stick to facts. “Give the basic information you know—the time, place, person, and evidence you have, and say you’re there for her if you can support her,” says Strgar. “Tell her you trust her to make the right choice for herself but you feel like it’s the kind of thing that if it was reversed, you’d hope she’d tell you.”

Afterward, Keep It to Yourself

Once you’ve done the hardest part—delivering the news—your job is simple: Be there for your friend (without staying overly involved to an unhealthy degree) and keep your mouth shut. It’s embarrassing and painful enough that your friend had to find out about her partner being unfaithful through a third party, but the only thing worse than that would be if her relationship problems became fodder for gossip. “Assure her the information stays only with you,” says Strgar. This will give her peace of mind amid a chaotic, stressful time. If you yourself need support (since it’s probably been pretty stressful for you, too) journal it out or confide in someone you know you can trust who’s outside your shared friend group, whether that’s your own partner (assuming you fully trust him or her!), a friend who lives in another city, or your mom.

Now the Nanny Is Involved in Robin Thicke & Paula Patton's Custody Battle

More details are emerging about Robin Thicke and Paula Patton's ugly custody battle — and now we know their nanny has been involved in the whole mess.

The pair made headlines when police were called over a custody dispute they had in mid-February, but audio of the 911 call, obtained by TMZ, reveals that it was their 6-year-old son Julian's nanny who made the call to police.

More: 9 Things to Know About Robin Thicke's Girlfriend, April Love Geary

During the call, the nanny asked police to meet Patton and Thicke at the park where Thicke was set to pick up Julian. She claimed that Thicke was violating the restraining order that Patton had against him.

"We need you guys to just intervene because we have a court order document that the child doesn’t want to go with his father, he doesn’t have to go, and now it’s enforced," the nanny says during the call. "We need you to come and enforce the order. We have a restraining order, the person is within distance of the restraining order, he’s in violation of it currently."

She also told police that Julian was begging Patton not to leave him with Thicke.

"This child is literally begging for me and everyone else to call 911. That’s how much he does not want to go," the nanny explained. "… He’s 6 years old, and literally every time we have these visits, the night before, the day before, he’s crying, he’s praying to angels, he’s trying to avoid it like the plague. It needs to end."

An insider close to Thicke told a different story, though, saying Patton was an hour late to drop off Julian, and that Thicke stayed inside his car while a mediator went back and forth between them.

"Here's what happens," the source told Us Weekly back in February, just after the incident took place. "Paula finally shows up and won't let Julian out of the car, she doesn't want to hand Julian over. The moderator is going between them and Robin is sitting in his car, doing as he's directed. And for some reason she called her housekeeper, and the housekeeper who was at the house, not at the park, mind you, calls the police and says Robin is violating his restraining order. And Robin never got out of his car. Paula then takes Julian and leaves."

The insider continued, "When the police showed up, she was gone. They went up to Robin and they said, 'Someone called saying you broke the restraining order' and he said, 'No, this is my designated spot to pick up my son. We have joint custody and we do this every week, I stay in the car.' He had a full conversation with the police and they didn't do anything. The saddest part about this is that was his only time to see Julian."

A friend of Patton's told yet another different story.

"Paula was not an hour late," the Patton source said. "What happens is, when Paula goes to hand off Julian to Robin, she is supposed to hand him off to a monitor. Robin is not supposed to be there because of the court-ordered restraining order. So he showed up despite the court order, and then Julian said he didn't want to go with his dad as soon as he saw him, so that's why the handoff didn't end up happening."

Mourning the Days of Mary-Kate and Ashley, the World's Best Kid Detectives

If you're a ride or die '90s baby like me, then you know that back in the day, the Olsen twins were queens of everything the light touched. Film, television, books, home video, style, looking alike: They had it all. Then, somewhere around 2005 after the craziness of New York Minute had died down, the Olsen twins quietly retreated from acting and channeled all their energy into making their fashion lines, The Row and Elizabeth and James, a rousing success.

Now, a new interview with Net-A-Porter's The Edit, Mary-Kate Olsen is opening up about her life now, seeming eons away from her life more than a decade ago. Now, Olsen is married to Olivier Sarkozy; she's living without social media and focusing on being a stepmother and working woman. She lives a relatively private and contained life, eschewing the insane public lifestyle she had even a handful of years ago for something, well, normal. Even the outlandishness of things like reports about "bowls of cigarettes" that emerged from her nuptials to Sarkozy seem to be a distant memory. This new version of Olsen is chill AF.

All this talk about the contemporary life of Olsen gets me nostalgic for the past. I want the twin adventures! I want the songs! I want magic and life and pizzaaaaaa! Hell, give me a side pony and I'm good to go. I get that Olsen has moved on in a major way and is ostensibly comfortable letting her younger sister, Elizabeth, take the acting spotlight. But she's really ready to just... call it quits? Hang up the scrunchie, magnifying glass, feather boa and any and all other props from her glory days as a child star and call it quits?

Well, if I can't have something new and exciting from Olsen and her sis, Ashley, then you can bet your boots I'm going to trot out the classics. Let's take a trip down memory lane. Fasten. Your. Seatbelts.

Americans Are Having Way Less Sex Than We Used To

I’ll be the first to admit I have a little problem when it comes to binge-watching my favorite shows on Netflix. After all, it’s hard to resist the temptation to kick back and watch an entire season of Gilmore Girls over the weekend. Rory and Lorelai are counting on me, right? Well, it looks like I'm not the only one with this habit — according to a new study, coupled-up Americans had sex 16 fewer times per year between 2010 and 2014 as compared to between 2000 and 2004, and researchers say digital distractions could be at play.

According to the survey, published in the Archives of Sexual Behavior, Americans also had sex about nine fewer times per year in 2010 through 2014 compared to 1995 through 1999. "These data show a major reversal from previous decades in terms of marriage and sex," said Jean M. Twenge, the study's lead author and professor of psychology at San Diego State University. "In the 1990s, married people had sex more times per year than never-married people, but by the mid-2000s that reversed, with the never-married having more sex.”

So WTF is going on? Age appears to be one factor. People in their 20s have sex more than 80 times per year, declining to 60 times per year by age 45 and 20 times per year by age 65. Each year after the peak of sexual frequency at age 25, sexual frequency declines 3.2 percent. Sad, but natural, I suppose.

The massive sexual decline among married couples is the real slap in the face to those who believe that joining in holy matrimony gives you the green light to have sex any time you want. Twenge raises a few different theories about why, including married partners being less happy, which makes us question the old theory: What came first — less sex, which leads to less happy, or less happy, which leads to less sex?

Well, Twenge says it’s probably some of both. “We do know that sexual frequency is linked to marital satisfaction, so overall if you have fewer people having sex, you could have people who are less happy and less satisfied with that relationship.” She also points to the ubiquity of electronic distraction as another possible reason for the decline in sex. “People aren’t looking around saying, ‘Hey, it’s 10 o’clock, what are we going to do?’” In other words, they're just clicking "next episode" on the Netflix queue.

But can we really blame the fact that we spend a gazillion hours in front of a screen rather than rolling around between the sheets? Well... maybe. Let’s face it: Smartphones and the appeal of 24-hour streaming are, for the most part, not helping our love lives. How many of us go to bed with our phone, rather than our partner? Looks like it’s time to start paying attention to a different kind of entertainment.
