Ugh, Andi Dorfman Returning to The Bachelor...

0
0

Let's start here by recapping Andi Dorfman and Nick Viall's relationship history.

First, Nick and Andi fall in love on The Bachelorette. They bang it out in the fantasy suite, Nick gets down on one knee and Andi rejects him, instead picking Josh Murray to be her fiancé.

More: Seriously, Hold My Wine — ABC Has Cast Its First Black Bachelorette

Then, a heartbroken Nick appears on After the Final Rose and asks Andi why she would sleep with him if she knew he wasn't the one, which horrifies and offends Andi because she doesn't think Nick should talk about their sex life on national television.

But here's the kicker: Andi goes on to break up with Josh and write a tell all book, detailing her time on The Bachelor with Nick and her heated relationship with Josh for the world to read. Hypocritical much?

Now, Nick is down to his final four girls on his season of The Bachelor and who should show up at his door but Andi. I would not have blamed Nick if he had closed that door right in her face, especially after she gave him that sassy "Hello, Nick."

More: Sounds Like Corinne's Former Flame Wants Her Back Once Bachelor Wraps

Thanks to previews we know Nick does not, in fact, close the door in her face but welcomes her into his room. He's really said nothing bad about Andi at all, ever, since wrapping his first season with Bachelor Nation. He even told Jimmy Kimmel he, Dorfman and Kaitlyn Bristowe are all on friendly terms.

Andi, on the other hand, apparently makes Nick cry and demands his honesty, whatever that means.

Really, I just think girlfriend needs to take a hike. Have she and Nick even really spoken outside of the show since her season of The Bachelorette?

More: Hold Up, Nick Viall Just Teased Corinne's Fate on The Bachelor

I swear, if she wants Nick back I will implode from exasperation.

I don't think that's how it's gonna go down, though. I think Andi is going to push Nick and ask him the tough questions about his remaining ladies. I think she was brought in by the show to be that emotional catalyst for Nick, and it will probably work well to get him to the dramatic place The Bachelor loves to let us stew in for the final few episodes.

We're going to need to update that Bachelor man cries slideshow. (See below.)

Why do you think Andi is back to confront Nick?

Hoda Kotb Adopts a Baby Girl

On Tuesday Today anchor Hoda Kotb surprised fans with news that she’s adopted an infant daughter, Haley Joy, who was born (sweetness alert) on Feb. 14.

“She’s a Valentine’s baby,” Kotb, 52, said on a call into her NBC morning show announcing the news. “She is the love of my life.”

Hoda Kotb insta

Hoda Kotb insta

We're fans of Kotb. It's hard not to like somebody who's written a book titled: Hoda: How I Survived War Zones, Bad Hair, Cancer, and Kathie Lee. She's also an outspoken advocate for breast cancer awareness after her own diagnosis in 2007 after which she underwent a mastectomy. Kotb even allowed Today to document her cancer battle to smash the stigma of the disease and empower other women to share their stories. Kotb's our kind of woman. So we're glad (and relieved!) that her recent disappearance from Today was strictly good news.

Kotb had definitely been dropping major hints about the reason behind her recent time off, posting on social media, "And suddenly you just know it's time to start something new and trust the magic of beginnings," and "For all the things my hands have held, the best by far is you." We were so onto you, Kotb. (It wasn't that hard.)

Kotb lives with her boyfriend, Joel Schiffman, who presumably will be on diaper duty as well.

Kotb’s Today co-hosts were clearly excited about their colleague's news. It was a major on-air lovefest, leaving us wondering if the gang hangs out after hours gossiping about The View and The Chew and hate-watching The Bachelor at Kotb's place.

We also really want to know how co-anchor Kathie Lee Gifford, who was in the loop, kept Kotb's secret under wraps.

"I’ve got the biggest mouth in the world and I’ve said zilch," she said. "Hoda, we are thrilled for you, sweetheart. You were made to be a mom."

Gifford followed up later with a tweet to her friend. “So thrilled for @hodakotb and her precious daughter, Haley Joy!! She will be the best mommy ever! We love you, Hoda, enjoy.”

Matt Lauer was equally thrilled. “This little girl Haley is the luckiest girl. You’re going to be one of the most fantastic moms I can ever imagine.”

And Savannah Guthrie tweeted, “Overjoyed for @hodakotb and her little comet Haley - a brilliant flash of light for our world. Love love love and LOVE"

More: Domestic adoption might be easier than you think

Our favorite celeb response, though, came from the guy we'd most like to be stuck in an elevator with. Carson Daly always knows just what to say.

“You’re going to be an incredible mother. You thought you drank a lot of wine before? Just wait,” he quipped.

Christina El Moussa Isn't Trying to Cryptically Tell Fans Flip or Flop Is Over

0
0

Update, Feb. 21, 8:30 a.m. PT: During an appearance on Tuesday's Good Morning America, Christina El Moussa basically told Flip or Flop fans to calm the heck down — the show isn't going anywhere.

"Honestly, despite everything, I'm doing really, really, really good," Christina said. "Tarek and I met 10 years ago at work and went through a market crash. We went through [Tarek's] cancer, infertility. Now we're going through a very public divorce, but, despite everything, our primary focus always will be our kids. We continue to work together, and there's a lot of false stories and a lot of hype, but in the end we're just normal, nice people who just want to be the best parents and co-workers that we can be."

She added that she and Tarek have no plans to stop working together on the show and that all those rumors about it being a super-hostile environment because of how much they hate each other are really far from the truth.

"[We] filmed together three, four days a week and... we have a great crew. We have so much fun on set, and we look forward to continuing the show," she said. "It's our normal. We also run a seminar company together, Success Path, and every five weeks we go to Vegas together.... [We] have a great time, and we'll always be working together."

Original story:

Christina El Moussa may have underestimated how crazy Flip or Flop fans can get about the show (or maybe she just likes to mess with them, and if that's the case, I may actually like her), because an Instagram post that really was pretty innocuous sent them all into a rabid tizzy this week.

More: Finally, Photos of Christina El Moussa and Her Boyfriend Gary Anderson

The post in question was just a group shot of El Moussa hanging with the Flip or Flop crew alongside a message thanking them for all their hard work on the series.

Christina El Moussa causes Flip Or Flop fans to panic

Christina El Moussa causes Flip Or Flop fans to panic

"I've never met a group of more positive, fun-loving, funny... all around amazing guys... filming 7 seasons of #FlipOrFlop has been a breeze because of them. I [heart] each and every one of you," she wrote. Aww, that's a sweet message.

More: Christina El Moussa Reportedly Verbally Attacked by Tarek on Flip or Flop Set

The wording, though, was maybe not El Moussa's best choice. It does kind of sound like she's saying goodbye to the show's crew, and that's how a lot of her followers took it. Complete, all-consuming panic ensued, because a world without Flip or Flop is not a world any of these people want to live in.

But while El Moussa's followers were filling her comment section with crying emojis, they were missing the real point of this post: She is shading the ever-living shit out of her soon-to-be-ex-husband Tarek El Moussa.

Read the post again. See that part where she says that filming seven seasons has been a breeze? SEVEN? Flip or Flop Season 8 just premiered, fam. Season 8. What she's actually saying here is that the show was all fun and easy until now, and the divorce is ruining everything. You're welcome for that quality piece of detective work.

Science Says Some of Your Favorite Foods May Be Causing Your Acne

0
0

Having acne at 15 years old is expected. Having acne in college is a bit painful. But having acne as an adult is a whole new unwelcome and often cursed battlefield.

Natural remedies, drugstore products and prescription medications can aid problem skin and sometimes completely clear it up; however, for the few unlucky ones, branded by the inflamed dots that freckle across our skin, nothing seems to work.

If you’re desperate for answers and solutions, your saving grace may be in the inflammatory foods that you are digesting throughout your week. Something that most of us love, even overdose on, and sort-of worship could be the cause of inflammation and persistent skin issues: dairy.

More: Here's What the Dermatologist Isn't Telling You About Your Acne

If you drink milk, eat cheese or consume any other form of dairy (yes, this includes ice cream), you could be contributing to your acne problem. While science has told us that milk is beneficial for health, milk and dairy is very processed and contain harmful hormones that can increase sebum.

IGF-1, a natural hormone found in cow milk, is wonderful for helping baby cows grow; however, for human skin, it only increases swelling and inflammation. Milk itself doesn’t cause the acne, but the 60 hormones found in one glass of milk sure do. Because of the inclusion of the hormones, oil glands are “turned on” and produce acne.

Moreover, IGF-1 acts like insulin, which contributes to more acne. By drinking one glass of milk a day, insulin levels can spike 300 percent. Milk sugar has been linked to diabetes since it travels rapidly through the bloodstream and can cause an allergic reaction. Obviously, by staying away from cow milk, you should also stay away from other more obvious foods or drinks, which contain high levels of sugar.

More: Everything I Did to Calm My Acne-Prone Skin a Week Before My Wedding

In addition to harming your skin, cow milk has been linked to breast, prostate and ovarian cancers due to the hormone-dependent tumors.

I began my personal journey of cutting out cow milk (primarily) and cheese (I have a harder time with that one) about two months ago and have seen significant changes. Removing dairy from your diet may not cure all signs of acne, but it does reduce inflammation and can better your life in the long run. I switched over to almond milk and purchased Daiya products for my alternative to cream cheese and shredded cheese. Since dairy can be difficult to digest, it sometimes comes out in the form of cystic acne along the chin and jawline. When I began to remove cow milk from my diet, the acne on my jaw and chin virtually vanished and shrunk in size.

I did, unfortunately, splurge every now and then. The holidays were horrific (oh God, the cheeeeeseeeese) and I woke up one morning during the middle of my trip home with an incredible amount of painful, cystic bumps. The dietary process takes time to work its magic — be patient!

More: 6 Skin Conditions That Look Like Acne but Aren't

In order to fully clear up your skin, you might want to consider cutting out dairy cold turkey. In my case, I slowly weeded it out, which still resulted in pesky little breakouts. When beginning this new change, you may notice that so many food-related items include dairy and milk; however, alternatives do exist! Your skin will love leafy greens, fresh fruit, fish and nuts. Additionally, almond milk, rice milk, coconut milk or hemp milk are much better for you than drinking cow milk. Once you begin to cut out dairy, obsess over alternatives for cheese and experiment with healthy recipes, your entire diet and well-being will be illuminated, along with your skin.

Updated: Feb. 21, 9 a.m. PT: Lisa Marie Presley's mom, Priscilla Presley, is stepping in to clear up some of the rumors surrounding her daughter's divorce.

Lisa Marie Presley's kids are not in the care of child protective services, but are staying with her, she wrote in a Facebook post alongside a photo of the 8-year-old twin girls playing in her pool.

"There is Lots of confusion, commotion and concern from all the talk circulating," Priscilla Presley wrote. "Let me put this to rest... the girls have not been in foster care and never will be. The girls have been with me and will be until all this is sorted out."

Original story:

Lisa Marie Presley's divorce, which has been pretty quiet so far, is suddenly turning ugly.

More: Lisa Marie Presley’s Divorce Could Expose Scary Details From Her Marriage

Presley quietly filed for divorce last year from her fourth husband, musician Michael Lockwood, after 10 years of marriage. The filing was pretty abrupt, and they still haven't finalized their split — Lockwood is claiming rights to Presley's share of the $300 million estate left to the family by her late father, Elvis Presley.

Now, though, court papers reportedly say Presley found "indecent" photos and videos on what she says is Lockwood's computer, and that 80 of his devices have been seized by Beverly Hills police. Reports say it was Presley who discovered the photos and videos and called the police.

"I was shocked and horrified and sick to my stomach," Presley said in court filings. "My understanding is that Tennessee law enforcement is also conducting an investigation related to the photos and videos that I discovered, I have no idea what else may be on those devices and fear that there are more and worse images and evidence in these un-analyzed devices."

TMZ reports that the content found was enough for child protective services to take the couple's 8-year-old twin girls away from both parents. Reportedly, the girls are in protective custody and will stay there at least until a court hearing, scheduled for March.

According to the Daily Mail, Lockwood is still being allowed supervised visitation with the twins, whose two nannies accompany them on visits to see their father. Lockwood has posted on social media about his visits with the girls.

10 Dating Safety Rules that Could Save Your Life

0
0

Yes, dating can be a total nightmare when you get hooked up with someone who is rude, obnoxious, or just not your type — but it can be a real nightmare if you don't take proper safety precautions and end up in a position where you an be assaulted or even murdered.

You may be going out on a date with someone you've been chatting up on line for months, or even someone you've been setup with by a mutual acquaintance — but the truth of the matter is you're making you're self extremely vulnerable to a stranger. And modern dating is making us even more vulnerable than ever: A 2016 study in the UK reported that reports of rape linked to online dating increased 450 percent between 2009 and 2014, according to Vice News.

Everyone takes some risks when it comes to finding love, but you should never take risks that will put you in physical danger. Follow these rules of thumb when you are getting to know someone new.

More: What People Really Want in a Soul Mate According to Research

1. Keep your loved ones in the loop

Always let roommates, friends and family members know when you plan to go out on a date. Give all the proper information about where you are going, who you're going with (including your date's name and phone number) and when you expect to be home. If anything changes regarding your whereabouts during the course of the evening, let them know right away.

It may sound a little overboard, but if no one knows you're out, they won't know they should be worried if something should go wrong. Remember 127 Hours? It's kinda the same idea. If James Franco's character had just let someone know he was going out hiking, they would have known to look for him a whole lot sooner.

2. Provide your own transportation

Match.com suggests providing your own transport when you're meeting up with someone you don't know very well, and it's a life-saving idea.

Uber it or drive your own car and not only will you have a quick getaway if things get weird, but you're also keeping your home address hidden from your date.

3. Meet in a safe environment

Netflix and chill is fun and all, but don't ever invite someone you hardly know over to your house, or go over to theirs.

"Meet in a public place at a time with many people around," Kimberly Cheryl suggests in her book Are Your Habits Killing You? "A familiar restaurant or coffee shop, at a time where a lot of other people will be present is a fine choice."

Not only will this decrease your chances of being put in an unsafe situation, but other people may also remember you being in that location, in the event something does happen to you.

4. Don't leave your food or drink unattended

GHB (gamma hydroxybutyrate) and roofies (Rohypnol) — which you've probably heard of by now — are odorless, colorless date rape drugs that can make you disoriented or unconscious. We don't want to believe that someone we're on a date with will slip us any drugs, but it does happen.

Don't accept a drink from your date unless you open it yourself or watch it being prepared by a bartender.

5. Limit alcohol consumption, period

While we're on the topic of booze, it's also not a great idea to drink more than one or two beverages while out with someone you don't know very well. Alcohol lowers your inhibitions and makes it easier for a potential predator to talk you into leaving a public place.

Sure, dating can be awkward and it's easy to fall back on a little social lubrication to keep conversation flowing easier — but is it really worth it?

6. Don't give out your personal info

"Guard your personal contact information on any dating or social networking site," Says Dr. Marla W. Deibler, a psychologist at The Center for Emotional Health of Greater Philadelphia, LLC. "If using an online dating website, you can choose to have the individual respond to the site, rather than your email address, or you can set up an email address specifically for this purpose.'

7. Go on a group date

If you can, go out with at least one other friend — that way, you can keep on eye on each other in case someone is slipped a date rape drug or appears to be drinking too much. It's also a great way to get a second opinion if you are getting bad vibes from a date.

8. Carry some protection

No, we're not talking condoms here (though having condoms with you is always a good idea). We're talking good ol' fashioned pepper spray.

A lot of people might think it's over-the-top, but tucking some pepper spray or Mace in your purse when you go on a first date is a good move in case you get attacked. Better safe than sorry.

9. Don't lie

Misrepresenting yourself over email or on a dating site might piss off your date.

"It is ill-advised to share photos or other information that is untruthful, as discovering such misrepresentation can lead to angry feelings and perhaps aggressive behavior," Dr. Deibler says.

10. Google them!

The best defense is a good offense. If you google your date and find some questionable info or just get a bad feeling, follow your gut and cancel ASAP.

Zoe Saldana Has a New Baby

In today’s episode of Baby Names Brought to You by Free-Spirited Celebs:

Zoe Saldana (Avatar's blue protagonist) and her husband, Marco Perego, announced the arrival of a third kid to their family — a son, Zen.

More: Zoe Saldana's new pic is causing baby fever, view with caution

“Marco and I are elated to share the news of the birth of our son Zen,” Saldana said on Instagram on Saturday. “We couldn’t feel more blessed with the new addition to our family. #ThreeBoys… oh boy!” And there are her twins Cy and Bowie, age 2, checking out their new little brother.

(Cy and Bowie edged out Zen in the name department, we're thinking. It was a draw when it came to Apple and Moses, though — sorry, Gwynnie.)

More: Zoe Saldana's husband is taking her last name

Well, let’s see how Zen you’re feeling after a month of no sleep, Zoe and Marco. Mwahahahaha. But when did Zen arrive? How, you ask? Easy: The presumably chill infant manifested from thin air and floated gently into a lotus position into his mother's arms — all the while meditating deeply on the intense pressure he will feel as an adult to resist his inner Type A aspirations to be a ruthless Wall Street lawyer. Namaste.

No, but seriously, we're not really sure about the route Zen took to get here. Fans wondered if Saldana and Perego went with surrogacy or adoption, as Saldana was most definitely not out and about on the trench coat-wearing, baby-bumping circuit: “OMG when?!?! Surprise of a life time. We never guessed,” said one fan.

Yeah, we didn't either. And we get, like, paid to figure this stuff out.

What Jane the Virgin Gets Right About the Grieving Process

0
0

Jane the Virgin Season 3 certainly pulled a fast one when the show killed off Michael (Brett Dier) during the middle of the season. It was something fans suspected may happen at some point in time, but how and when his death occurred, well, it was pretty shocking.

More: While You're Mourning That Jane the Virgin Death, Exec Says the Show Will Go On

From that moment, fans have watched how Jane's life has changed drastically since officially becoming a widow and how she continues to cope three years later. However you may feel about the death of Michael and how JTV chose to handle Jane's storyline by surpassing most of her raw and emotional grieving process, there is no doubt that the series has gotten a lot right about grief.

Like Jane, I lost someone I loved out of the blue. At just 13 years old, my brother died at 16 in a car accident. It turned my world upside-down, and soon enough, I was hit right smack in the face with grief. Obviously, the type of loss Jane is experiencing compared to my own is vastly different, but I can still relate to her grieving process and also the fact that she had to say goodbye to someone unexpectedly at such a young age.

Everybody grieves differently, but anyone who has endured an overwhelming tragedy absolutely understands the loss and all of the emotions that come with it. And Jane the Virgin is doing just that in a realistic way.

With that, here's what the dramedy has so far gotten right about the grieving process.

1. Reality is overwhelming

Jane, Jane the Virgin
Image: Tumblr

No matter how much time has passed, reality is always there waiting. For Jane, she's been trying to cope with Michael's death all while making her writing dreams come true and being a great mom to her son, Mateo. Finding that balance is difficult, not to mention beyond overwhelming. Sometimes it's easier to ignore reality and drown your sorrows in grief, but then there are moments where you'd rather go about your daily life and forget about grief altogether. Basically, reality can be a major bitch when dealing with loss.

2. Time doesn't heal all wounds

Rafael and Jane
Image: Tumblr

Unlike the common phrase claims, time actually doesn't heal all wounds. Whether it's been one day, three months or 20 years, grief is always there lurking behind you. Sometimes you have a good day and then sometimes you have a bad day. That's something Jane has now realized. Even though it's been three years since Michael died, she still hurts and cries.

3. Anxiety and panic attacks

Jane, Jane the Virgin
Image: Tumblr

As showcased in Season 3, Episode 12, Jane suffers from anxiety and often gets panic attacks regarding Michael's death. That is quite common among many individuals who have had to say goodbye to someone they love dearly, including myself. It's like your body can't keep up with all of the emotions, heartache, stress, sadness and everything else that comes with grief and you end up in a total panic.

More: Thank You, The Family, for Understanding the Grief Kids Go Through When a Sibling Dies

4. Anything can trigger emotions

Michael and Jane
Image: Tumblr

Whether it be a favorite song, a favorite color, a favorite number or a favorite food, anything and everything can trigger emotions. That happens often with Jane whenever she sees something that reminds her of Michael. Rarely do I, like Jane, ever go a day without watching, reading, hearing or seeing something that makes me think of my brother.

5. There is both darkness and light

Jane the Virgin
Image: Tumblr

As Alba told Jane in one episode, "We need to let some light in." With the death of a loved one, the darkness can be immense. Depending on the day, you'll feel like staying in the darkness rather than stepping into the light. The highs and lows are unpredictable, but you certainly feel both.

6. Things will forever be "different"

Jane, Jane the Virgin
Image: Tumblr

As time goes on, living your life doesn't become easier, but rather different. That's the only way I can think of describing it, and clearly Alba gets that as well. "And your life will be beautiful again, just in different ways," she told Jane in one episode. I couldn't have said it better by myself.

7. Grief is complex

Jane, Jane the Virgin

Jane's ups and downs show that grief is beyond simple. There may be the so-called "stages of grief," but as someone who knows a thing or two about it, I do not believe there is a rulebook on the right or best way to grieve. It is complex and one of the most difficult things to understand or explain unless you can relate to someone who knows exactly what you're feeling.

8. Keeping someone's memory alive

Jane the Virgin
Image: Tumblr

Despite saying goodbye to Michael three years ago, Jane continues to keep Michael's memory alive. That's truly hard, especially when the person is no longer here in the flesh. It's one of the reasons Jane enjoyed talking to Michael's old partner, Dennis. She likes hearing new things about Michael because it keeps him alive a little. Not everyone likes to talk about the death of a loved one, but I prefer to do so for exactly the same reasons as Jane.

9. Being happy is OK

Rafael and Jane

There are times when Jane is happy, like whenever Mateo makes her smile or when she got her book deal. Guess what? That's OK. Just because someone dies doesn't mean you're not allowed to feel happy, smile or bask in the light.

10. Grief never goes away

Jane and Rafael
Image: Tumblr

Three years later and Jane is still grieving Michael, which goes to show you that grief never goes away. There are some days that are better than others, but unfortunately, when someone you love deeply dies, grief is always there tapping you on the shoulder.

Thank you, Jane the Virgin, for realistically portraying grief and helping others understand what it's like to say goodbye forever to a loved one.

Jane the Virgin airs Mondays at 9/8c on The CW.

Marriage Equality Laws Associated With Drop in LGBTQ Teen Suicide Rate

0
0

What effect do expanding and more inclusive marriage equality laws have on the mental health of LGBTQ youth? Evidently, a lot.

A new study published in JAMA Pediatrics found that across 47 states, same-sex marriage policies were associated with a 7 percent reduction in high school students who reported a suicide attempt in the past year — particularly among adolescents who were sexual minorities.

Suicide is the second-leading cause of death for people ages 15 to 24 (the first is unintentional injury). According to the CDC, the attempted suicide rate is four times higher among lesbian, gay and bisexual adolescents, so the potential impact of marriage equality laws on this population is especially significant.

More: How You Can Support Women's, LGBT and Civil Rights Post-Election

"Study after study indicates that LGBT adolescents experience higher rates of mental health problems, as compared to their cisgender heterosexual peers, explained in part by elevated levels of victimization and discrimination," Dr. Adam Fried, a clinical psychologist practicing in Scottsdale, Arizona, told SheKnows. "The rates of LGBT youth who have considered or attempted suicide are especially troubling, particularly among gender minority youth. While we cannot infer causation from a study like this, these results suggest a hopeful trend in the reduction of suicide attempts among LGBT adolescents."

Researchers at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health estimate that more than 134,000 fewer adolescent suicide attempts were made per year after comparing states that passed laws permitting same-sex marriage through January 2015 with states that did not adopt state-level legalization. Another recent factor was the June 2015 Supreme Court decision that legalized marriage equality on a federal level.

More: 10 LGBT Organizations That Have Made a Difference

One of the primary arguments in favor of marriage equality laws has been that by giving one group access to basic human rights, it doesn’t negatively impact the rights of others (namely, those opposed to same-sex marriage). While that is certainly still true, findings from this study take it one step further: guaranteeing basic human rights to one group can have an additional positive effect, improving the mental health of others.

"While it’s impossible to determine whether marriage equality laws by themselves directly impact the lives of LGBT teens, they may serve as powerful indicators to adolescents of perhaps a less rejecting and more accepting and supportive society," Fried explained. "As others have pointed out, one cannot underestimate the significant impact of stigma and rejection, particularly by family, classmates and community, on mental health."

He noted that research with LGBTQ youth on perceived social support and acceptance reinforce these conclusions.

"LGBT perceptions of positive social support and acceptance, particularly by family members, have been associated with lower levels of psychological distress and mental health problems," Fried said.

And while the reduction in suicide attempts among adolescents is good news, there is still a lot of work to be done to improve access to mental health care for LGBTQ youth. Not only that, but policies that take away existing rights or add to the stigma could have the opposite effect — another reason why it’s important for us not to regress when it comes to the human rights of any group.

“We can all agree that reducing adolescent suicide attempts is a good thing, regardless of our political views,” study leader Dr. Julia Raifman, a post-doctoral fellow in the department of epidemiology at the Bloomberg School said in a press release. “Policymakers need to be aware that policies on sexual minority rights can have a real effect on the mental health of adolescents. The policies at the top can dictate in ways both positive and negative what happens further down.”

Why a Mom Is Carrying Her Terminally Ill Baby to Term

0

At their 20-week ultrasound, Oklahoma parents Keri and Royce Young got devastating news. Their baby had anencephaly — a birth defect in which a baby is born without parts of the brain and skull. They were told their daughter would only survive a few hours after birth.

But instead of terminating the pregnancy, Keri Young decided to carry the baby (named Eva) to full term so they could meet their baby, say goodbye and donate her organs.

Royce recently posted on Facebook his feelings at that moment:

"There I was, crestfallen and heartbroken, but I momentarily got lifted out of the moment and just stood in awe of her. I was a spectator to my own life, watching a superhero find her superpowers. In literally the worst moment of her life, finding out her baby was going to die, it took her less than a minute to think of someone else and how her selflessness could help."

The couple later learned they will be able to donate their daughter's heart valves, kidneys, liver and maybe pancreas. Her lungs can be donated for research.

Royce writes, "There's another family out there hurting and hoping for a miracle for their baby, knowing full well someone else's baby will need to die first. Eva can be that miracle."

This will be the couple's second child and what was supposed to be a time of excitement has turned into an extremely emotional, difficult journey. Mom Keri can feel every kick, hiccup and roll. Royce says she's reminded every moment of every day that she's carrying a baby that will die.

But there are still small moments of happiness. In December, Keri wrote on her Facebook page, "Heard little Eva's heart today. It brought me so much joy to hear it."

Dad Royce would do anything to change what's happening to them.

He writes... "I want my daughter to be perfect. I want her to blow out her candles on her first birthday. I want to watch her bang her head on our coffee table trying to learn to walk. I want her to run up a cell phone bill texting boys. I want to walk her down an aisle. I want to change it all so, so badly. But I can't. This is our reality. And there's no stopping it."

Baby Eva is due in May.

Drake Might Be Dating Winnie Harlow, But Really, Only RiRi Can Lock Him Down

We all knew that only one woman could cage Drake, and it's not even the legendary Jennifer Lopez. No, it's Rihanna. He is stuck on her. There's no way around it.

More: J.Lo and Drake Are Officially Over, Though It’s Unclear Whether They Ever Began

The proof? Even after their breakup, and even after RiRi threw so much shade Drake's way for briefly dating Lopez, Drake still paid tribute to Rihanna onstage in London for her birthday.

"It's somebody's birthday today — somebody I have a lot of love for and a lot of respect for," Drake said from the stage. "So, instead of singing 'Happy Birthday,' though, we just going to do this, we just going to do this in Dublin tonight. Instead of singing 'Happy Birthday,' we're going to set it off just like this…"

And then Drake played "Work," otherwise known as the song he and RiRi did a whole lot of grinding to when they were on tour together.

Drake wishes Rihanna a happy birthday

Drake wishes Rihanna a happy birthday

But since Rihanna isn't giving Drake the time of day, he's casually hanging with another famous name: model Winnie Harlow.

According to Page Six, Drake was hosting an all-night party at London hotspot Libertine, and Harlow ditched her plans so she could meet up with him there, where they stayed cozy until 5 a.m.

More: Drake Reportedly Wants Something Jennifer Lopez Just Won't Give Him

Someone else who was at the party revealed all the deets, saying, "Jourdan Dunn and Adriana Lima were also at the bash but Drake only had eyes for Winnie. The pair were spotted chatting and dancing together at the party that went on until the early hours. Winnie’s night started at Cirque but she quickly left fellow model Kendall Jenner in the club to meet up with Drake at the nearby venue."

The onlooker added, "Drake regularly parties at Libertine and had only extended the invite to his closest pals. Winnie and Drake have always had a close friendship, with him even rapping about her on track 'Know Yourself,' but they looked particularly intimate on Saturday."

And in case anyone thinks this is just another in the long history of rumors about Drake's alleged love interests, Harlow added a short video of him to her Instagram that night, so we at least have proof that they were together.

George and Amal Clooney Are Having a Boy and a Girl

What. Even.

George. Amal. Listen up. This is a very dangerous game you’re playing at, you two. First, you swipe Bey and Jay’s baby thunder with follow-up news of your own twins (we still want to know what sorcery was involved). And now we're hearing that a boy and a girl are on the way?

Clooneys, FYI: Word on the street is that Beyoncé and Jay Z have also got some XX and XY buns in the oven. But you knew this already. You knew it all along.

More: Is Amal Clooney having George's perfect baby? Could it be?

Seriously, this twins competition between these power couples is neck and neck. We’re biting our nails waiting for the next "coincidence." Will it be the same hospital? The same birth plan involving smooth jazz, a water birth with dolphins and stunt doubles at nearby hospitals to throw paparazzi off the trail?

Now, the Clooneys aren’t really talking — which is nothing new. But apparently, George’s mom is a chatty one (celebs: Their moms are just like ours!). Nina Clooney said last weekend, “It will be one of each! Yes, a boy and a girl. That’s what I’ve been told. How marvelous! My husband and I are extremely excited.”

We kind of want to meet George’s mom now, with all of those exclamation marks and that Mary Poppins-esque “how marvelous!” Sounds like Grandma will be more than happy to babysit, George, if you have any panic attacks about being a 55-year-old first-time papa. The actor is reportedly “excited but nervous.”

More: Yup, Amal and George are going all in with twins

Well, heck, we’d be nervous too if we were copycatting Beyoncé and Jay Z's twins M.O. our first time out of the parenting gate.

You know who else is as excited as Grandma Clooney? Jason Bourne. Matt Damon told ET Canada that he “almost started crying” when he heard the news of Amal and George’s twins.

“I’m thrilled for [George]. She’s amazing," Damon said. "He hit the jackpot, just on every level. [Amal] is a remarkable woman. They’re gonna be great. They’re gonna be awesome parents. Those kids are lucky.”

Matt, you and Nina Clooney are going to be the best babysitters ever. We can just see you in #TeamClooney T-shirts.

Katy Perry's New Video Exposes the Darkness That's Permeating Our World

0

Things aren't as cheerful as they appear in Oblivia. That's the name of the theme park visited by Katy Perry in the "Chained to the Rhythm" music video, and it looks like a sickly sweet confection of contemporary American life. But don't be fooled: Oblivia is a mirror of the world we live in, and that means something far more sinister is happening underneath the pastel-colored sheen.

More: Katy Perry's Giving Off Strong Hillary Clinton Vibes With New Lyric Video

Superficially speaking, the video for "Chained To The Rhythm" is prototypical Perry: bright colors, plastered-on smiles, chipper choreography and a general air of carefree happiness. Perry is seen wandering around the Oblivia theme park, where she is surrounded by other theme park attendees eager to go on rides like "The Great American Dream Drop," "Bombs Away" and "The Hamster Wheel."

Chained To The Rhythm Video

Chained To The Rhythm Video

But everything about the theme park is meant to distract those in attendance from the darkness that lurks underneath. The name of the theme park, Oblivia, is a clear reference to the word "oblivion," which could be correlated to the zombie-like state of existence referenced in the chorus of "Chained to the Rhythm". It only gets darker when you keep digging.

The rides, clothing and aesthetic of the theme park have a mix of 1950s and 1980s pop to them; these time period references are no mistake either. Life in America during the 1950s and 1980s was full of political anxieties — between the nuclear war scares of the '50s and Cold War fears in the '80s — mixed with the cheerier pop culture aesthetics that spring to mind when you think of the respective decades. This basically spells trouble for those at the Oblivia theme park.

Katy Perry Chained Rhythm Likes Dislikes
Image: Giphy

But Perry is making modern day commentary too. When she is on the "Love Me" roller-coaster, she goes through a tunnel with light up "Like," "Love" and "Haha" buttons, which can typically be found on Facebook. It could be argued the roller-coaster acts like Facebook. Everyone is strapped on board, unable to get off, yet somehow super-happy with the ride they're on and they're all vying to get the best picture, the most likes and so forth.

More: Katy Perry Inspires Our New Post-Election Rally Cry

There are other indicators in "Chained to the Rhythm" that prove our modern American culture is designed to distract, zombify and numb us to the dark reality going on behind the scenes. Zombie-like lines at every ride show that people will follow along blindly without breaking rank to explore the world around them. At the ride, "The Great American Dream Drop," happy (presumably heterosexual couples) pile into squished, small house cabins and go up on a carousel swing and spin around until they're probably sick, a commentary that behind every American front door lies a world we don't even know about.

Katy Perry Chained Zombie Line
Image: Giphy

"Chained to the Rhythm" is unabashedly political and the message has been evidenced in various readings of the lyrics since it first dropped, as well as Perry's 2017 Grammys performance. After becoming noticeably active during the 2016 election, it's not too far a stretch to believe that Perry is continuing her political activism in the medium she knows best: music. With "Chained to the Rhythm," she (and Sia, who wrote the hit song) is pleading with listeners to not get complacent now that the election year tension has (mostly) subsided. The lyrics effectively destroy that idea that ignorance is bliss; for Perry, ignorance is a death sentence.

More: Dolly Parton, Katy Perry's ACMs Performance Was the Epitome of Girl Power

It's only after Perry sits down to watch a movie with the other theme park guests that she realizes things aren't at all as positive or fun as she's been led to believe. She's the only one able to tear her head away from the movie and look around. Everyone is bopping along, but she cannot find the strength to do it too. The video ends on a melancholy note. Perry may be awake to the darker underpinnings of her world, but she appears unable to break away from the crowd or even leave Oblivia. Like listeners, it's on her to find the willpower to really break free of the invisible chains tethering her to a broken world.

A Dirty Dancing Novice and Expert Discuss the Film 30 Years After Its Release

0
0

This is what happens when a Dirty Dancing novice watches the film for the first time and discusses it with a Dirty Dancing expert. Let's watch it unfold...

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

This year marks the 30th anniversary of '80s hit Dirty Dancing, and up until last night, I hadn't watched it once.

More: 5 Dance Movie Stereotypes and Why We Love Them

Starring Jennifer Grey (not to be confused with Jennifer Beals, who appeared in Flashdance, another classic '80s film that I haven't seen) and Patrick Swayze (80's heartthrob, also in Ghost, also haven't seen that one), the movie chronicles the unlikely love story of Baby and Johnny Castle using drama, '80s glamour and a whole lot of dancing.

In honor of this momentous anniversary, I sat down with a bowl of popcorn and watched it start to finish. I'm going to tell you my thoughts while doing so...

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

Madeleine, I was going to forgive you for not seeing Dirty Dancing, but you haven’t seen Ghost or Flashdance either? May I ask which desert island you grew up on? Once I am done with this post, I am going to lock you in a room with a television, a VCR and about a dozen very important tapes that I will need you to review. But for now, let’s focus on the beautiful experience of you watching Dirty Dancing for the first time ever, and ostensibly, having the time of your life.

1. Everyone is in Dirty Dancing. How did I not know this?

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

I spent the first 10 minutes of this movie yelling and pointing at the screen with excitement as familiar famous faces appeared one after the other, 30 years younger than I'm used to seeing them.

First, there was Law and Order guy (Jerry Orbach), then Emily Gilmore (Kelly Bishop) and even Newman (Wayne Knight)! Newman!

I had no idea. Why didn't someone tell me? In all my years watching Seinfeld, no one ever once turned to me and said, "Did you know that Newman was in Dirty Dancing?"

Of course they didn't. Such a statement would be completely unnecessary because everyone has seen Dirty Dancing, and as such, would already know about Wayne Knight's storied filmography. Everyone except for me, that is.

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

Here’s some trivia. When Dirty Dancing was released, it had a relatively no-name cast (with the sole exception of Jerry Orbach) and wasn’t expected to be a blockbuster at all. So, yes, everyone you list, from Jennifer Grey to Patrick Swayze to Kelly Bishop, all got their big break from the movie. I will admit, though, that I had totally forgotten that Newman was in it until you mentioned it. Newman!

Man, I also forgot, until I looked it up just now, that Patrick Swayze died of cancer in 2009. Damn. Relearning that hurt all over again.

2. Baby is kind of a badass

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

First of all, I had no idea that people actually referred to her as Baby. I thought Baby was a one-off term of endearment used by Johnny Castle. Now I know better.

Furthermore, she's planning to go to school to study the economics of underdeveloped countries? Or join the peace corps? I never knew Baby was such a badass! Respect, Baby. Respect.

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

Yes! I think one of the central reasons this movie has survived the ‘80s and reached cult status is Baby’s badassery. She might initially come off as a bit of a pushover, and she has somehow been pinned with the worst nickname in history, but she is tough as nails. I mean, she asks her dad for abortion money for a person she barely knows. She steps up to the plate when someone has to perform the Mambo in front of a live audience. And she totally goes after what she wants.

I think there’s a misconception that Johnny has all of the agency in the film, including the moment he says, “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.” In reality, she falls in love with him not because he’s a strong, aggressive man, but because he recognizes her power and conviction when no one else does. It’s great.

I think we’ve also got to give some credit here to Eleanor Bergstein, who wrote the film and based it largely on her own life experiences (she has a doctor for a dad and spent her summers at a resort in the Catskills where she learned to dirty dance). And her older sister just happens to be named Frances.

3. Ohhhh, this is why it's called Dirty Dancing

Dirty dancing party
Image: Giphy

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

Today this movie would be called Grinding.

Also, do people do this anymore? I'm old, so I have no idea, but I feel like people don't have secret staff dance parties anymore. Why on earth not? They look so fun! Sweaty, but fun.

Now that I think of it, I feel like no one dances anymore.

Suddenly I'm filled with an overwhelming sadness, nostalgia for a world I'm not sure even existed in the first place.

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

Oh yeah. I definitely remember watching this when I was 8 and being a bit scandalized. Hell, I feel a bit scandalized right now, watching that GIF, but I like it.

Also, when you start watching Dirty Dancing when you are 8 and then grow up to attend some really, really boring staff parties, the disappointment is difficult to manage. Also, people at your staff party will ask you why you’ve brought so many watermelons with you.

4. Robbie is the literal worst

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

First of all, Baby, I take back a little bit of the respect I doled out to you earlier.

Your sister storms out of the woods disheveled and clearly upset, asking Robbie to apologize, and you do nothing! If that were my sister, I'd be doing far more than just standing on the dock with some creep watching this scene unfold with mild disinterest.

Secondly, and more important, Robbie is a total asshole. "Some people count, some people don't," he says a few scenes later, as he hands Baby a copy of The Fountainhead.

The Fountainhead?! He would read Ayn Rand.

I loathe him. I know I'm supposed to loathe him and I do, eagerly. Robbie can go to hell.

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

Agreed. He’s the antithesis of Johnny Castle. (Best name ever for a Patrick Swayze character? Yes.) Upon rewatching, I am actually kind of impressed that he has the time and energy to engage in so much crappy behavior. How do you schedule it all, Robbie?

5. What is this dance practice montage?

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

Why does Baby show up wearing ever-smaller items of clothing during these dance lessons? Isn't this montage supposed to be happening over the course of just a few days? Was there a heat wave? Were her jorts not sexy enough for the Swayze?

WTF. Now Swayze is shirtless too! What on earth is happening?

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

This dance practice montage happens to be one of the best montages in all of filmmaking is what it is. It’s right up there with Rocky’s training montage (my God, I just realized you probably haven’t seen Rocky; I will add it to my pile of VHS tapes for you), and for good reason. I mean, not only do they fall in love during this montage, I fall in love with them: both of them separately and also the idea of them as a couple. Also, "Hungry Eyes" is playing in the background: cue saxophone solo.

Now, please excuse me for a moment. I am going to go buy a pair of white Keds, but I will be back soon.

6. I need to work out more

Dirty Dancing practice
Image: Giphy

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

"Goddamn, Jennifer Grey is fit," I think to myself as I sit there shoving popcorn into my face and staring at her toned midsection.

I am briefly comforted when I remember that she was probably, like, 17 years old when Dirty Dancing was filmed. Then I do some Googling and discover that she's wasn't 17. She was 27.

Fuck.

I put away the popcorn and start doing crunches.

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

Me too. Maybe we should take dance lessons? Or we could try just running up and down that really, really long flight of stairs they keep showing in the movie.

More: What Does Baby (er, Jennifer Grey) Think of Dirty Dancing Remake?

7. She did it! Sort of!

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

I thought that the dance performance Baby was training for would be the pinnacle of the movie, but it clearly isn't.

This dance is actually kind of painful to watch. It might as well be me up there clumsily stumbling through those steps with a terrified smile plastered on my face. Yikes.

But she did it! She got through it without too many egregious errors. Yay, Baby!

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

I love how the dance scene at the Sheldrake is a classic false climax. They’ve been training for it so hard, but it’s not the iconic scene, y’all. There’s plenty of dirty dancing and sex and intrigue ahead.

8. This is why access to safe and legal abortion is such an important issue

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

The real question here is has Donald Trump seen Dirty Dancing? Because if he hasn't, he should, and he should invite Pence and all his anti-abortion cronies to watch too.

They should note that Penny, upon finding herself unintentionally pregnant, did not say to herself, "Welp, it's illegal to terminate this pregnancy so I guess I'm a mom now!" and begin knitting baby booties.

What Penny did instead was seek out some hack job "Doctor" who almost killed her.

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

Here, here! When I watched this movie when I was 8, I was always very confused about the Penny abortion storyline. What is a missed period? Why is everyone whispering? I was pretty sure that Penny was sick and that it was Robbie’s fault, but it wasn’t until later that I realized that the movie is about way more than dance moves. It’s got a serious political undertone, and it is executed fabulously in its simplicity. Not having access to safe and legal abortions is extremely dangerous and even deadly to women. At the same time, I don’t feel like the tone or the plot of the rest of the movie is negatively affected by such a deep and serious subplot. This movie has heart and daring. They don’t make ‘em like this anymore.

In fact, this makes me think: Was this the first big blockbuster that had a major plot point about abortion? The only other two big ones I can think of are The Cider House Rules and maybe Juno.

9. The line! The iconic line!

Baby in the corner

Image: Giphy
Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

I finally heard it! "Nobody puts Baby in the corner". I'm so happy, if a little underwhelmed, to have context for this classic quote.

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

What is this movie about besides dirty dancing? Why has it outlasted so many other cheesy ‘80s love stories? It’s the iconic line: “Nobody puts Baby in the corner.” This line isn’t about a man standing up for his lady; it’s about the most important aspect of love: recognizing who the other person really is. In that moment, Johnny is showing Baby not only that he loves her, but that he sees her clearly in a way that no one else does, not even her family. And in fact, by saying that in front of her family, he’s showing them who she really is — a very strong woman with a lot a deeply held beliefs, who works really hard to accomplish goals and who can suddenly dance really, really well.

10. This final dance scene is everything

Madeleine headshot circleellipsis GIF

Madeleine says...

She did the lift! Damn, girl.

Dirty Dancing lift
Image: Giphy

Oh shit, even the prissy old fur-clad ladies are getting down! And here we are, fox-trot be damned. They're all dancing dirty.

The chairs magically disappear and every single person in that room begins to dance together in sheer '80s ecstasy. Overcome by the big hair and the blue eye shadow and the spandex, they dance, young and old. Rich and poor. Black and white.

It's a lesson for all of us, no?

Sarah Aswellellipsis GIF

Sarah says...

We should really amend the Constitution so that all movies made in the United States are required to end with a full-cast dance scene. It’s for the good of all citizens.

And ugh, the chemistry between Grey and Swayze during the last dance scene is just unbelievable. I love how it’s the dance that the audience has learned along with the two characters, throughout the movie, so we know exactly how it goes and exactly how comfortable and into it both Baby and Johnny are as “Time of My Life” starts playing. And then, BOOM, suddenly all the resort’s entertainment staff is doing a perfectly choreographed dance down the aisle. Because why not?

OK, what other 1987 classics have you missed out on? Moonstruck? Predator? Lethal Weapon? The Princess Bride? Oh my God; tell me you’ve seen Princess Bride.

Blue Ivy Wore a Dress That Costs More Than My Rent

When Blue Ivy Carter was getting dressed to go to an NBA game with her 'rents, Beyoncé and Jay Z, she did what anyone would do and reached for the Gucci. Ya know, like ya do. Going to a basketball game is a major event in a 5-year-old's life, and it requires a dress that costs $1,800. Yeah, you read that right — $1,800. Or, ya know, three months' rent for my apartment. And I can't even be mad about it because she's effing (I don't feel right swearing right before saying a 5-year-old's name) Blue Ivy Carter.

She even had the sense to dress it down with Chucks, a ball cap and a denim jacket, proving Blue Ivy has more style sense than, like, 95.7 percent of adults in the world. Not that it should come as any surprise considering she's the offspring of Queen Bey, but still. Good to see she's got that figured out so young.

And the dress was really cute. It was all ruffled and lime green and lacy, with some dogs on it and a big bow in the middle. I would probably wear the adult version of that dress. I mean, not if it cost $1,800, but maybe if it was last season Gucci and they started selling Gucci at T.J. Maxx. I'd be a Maxxinista if the place sold Gucci.

Plus, this dress taught us a thing or two about Blue Ivy, who is our future queen, so knowledge is power. She likes dogs. That's a great quality in an overlord. She likes frilly things that are brightly colored. How relatable is that? She's only 5 years old and she's already outshining her mom, who is the secret ruler of the Illuminati. No big deal; that's why she's gonna rule the world. We all know and accept this as fact. It's fine.

Why Your Kid Lies (and What to Do About It)

Last night, my conversation with my daughter went something like this:

Me: "Did you brush your teeth?"

Daughter: "Yes."

Me: "Are you sure about that?"

Daughter: "Yes!"

Me: "Why doesn't your breath smell of toothpaste?"

Daughter: "Because I swallowed it all."

Me: "Did you really brush your teeth?"

Daughter: "Yes!"

Me: "Are you telling a lie?"

Daughter: "Yes…"

At least she came clean. And she's hardly the first 6-year-old to lie about brushing her teeth.

Dealing with a lying child is a hugely frustrating part of parenthood. What do you do when they look at you with those wide, innocent peepers — employing eye contact skills a poker supremo would die for — yet you know damn well they're spinning a yarn?

Why do kids lie?

Unsurprisingly, kids mainly lie to get what they want or to avoid getting into trouble. My daughter's lie about brushing her teeth ticks both boxes. She wanted to go to bed without brushing her teeth because, well, sometimes she's lazy, and she didn't want me to know about it because she knew I wouldn't be happy with her (and would probably launch into my "do you want all your teeth to fall out?" rant.)

But not all lies are motivated by selfishness. Children may also lie when it's beneficial for someone else. "As their 'moral reasoning' skills develop, kids realize that their lies can potentially protect others," says Rachel Annunziato, associate professor in Fordham University's psychology department.

A child's age and (perhaps more important) their developmental stage are important factors. "The ability to deceive increases with age and is linked to executive functioning skills (mental organization and regulation), theory of mind (ability to attribute mental states — beliefs, intents, desires, pretending, knowledge, etc. in others) and intelligence," says juvenile forensic psychologist Dr. Denis Zavodny. While young kids (up to around age 5) expect positive feedback when they lie (they focus on gain or avoiding punishment), older kids (around age 7 to 9) typically get more satisfaction from a confession than a lie.

Should we be worried if our kids lie?

Up to a certain age, lying should be considered no more than an inconvenient but natural part of a child's development. For Beverly Hills family and relationship psychotherapist Dr. Fran Walfish, there's a definite cutoff point. "When a child is under 7 years, I prefer to avoid the label of 'lying' because of its negative stigma," she says.

When lying is motivated by a desire to avoid taking responsibility, parents may need to take action. "Lying is problematic when associated with frequent or severe conduct problems, especially illegal behavior," says Zavodny.

According to Annunziato, "lying can be a cause for concern when it becomes a habit or when it persists into later childhood and certainly when it is detrimental to others at that point, such as blaming someone else for trouble."

How do we deal with a kid who lies?

Addressing lying can be a way to engage with your child, suggests Annunziato, leading to a positive conversation reinforcing the idea that lying is wrong while helping them recognize better ways to work through any conflict that triggered the lie. "When we talk to our children about lies, rather than just punish or ignore them, it certainly can be helpful for the development of their moral reasoning skills and also more broadly establishing consistent dialogue with them about difficult subjects," she say.

"The key here is to help the child accept accountability," says Walfish. "Smile gently (without blaming) and say, 'Johnny, you and I both know that you took Sally's toy. Some kids worry that they will be in trouble so they say they didn't do it. We both know what really happened and one day soon you'll be able to tell me the truth and not worry so much about getting in trouble.'"

Your instinct when faced with a lying child might not be to praise them, but this may actually be a productive approach. "Lying lessens when it's safe to tell the truth," says Dr. Kyle Pruett, clinical professor of child psychiatry at the Yale School of Medicine and educational advisory board member for The Goddard School. "Explain to your child that it’s OK to make a mistake and that she doesn’t have to lie about it. Remember to praise her for admitting that she made a mistake."

Don't forget that we are always setting an example — good or bad — for our kids. "Be aware that you are under constant scrutiny and the 'innocent' white lie that you can’t make a donation to a charitable organization because you don’t have any cash, for instance, will be noticed by your child," says Pruett. "Remember that the truth starts at home."

Karrueche Tran Is Still Dealing With the Fallout From Her Chris Brown Breakup

Even while we're all so divided by so many things, can we all agree on one of them? Chris Brown is terrible. There is no argument against this.

He already has a violent past with several of the women in his life. And now word is out that his ex-girlfriend Karrueche Tran was able to secure a restraining order against him because he allegedly threatened to kill her, telling her and several friends that he was going to "take her out."

Tran was under oath when she told a judge earlier this month that Brown threatened to shoot her if she wouldn't get back together with him, and then told a "few people that he was going to kill [her]." This was after Tran claimed he punched her several times in the stomach. He also allegedly threatened her friends and even threw a drink at one of them.

Tran dumped Brown back in 2015, and it says a lot that she's still so afraid of him that she just filed for a restraining order. The order requires Brown to stay at least 100 yards away from Tran, her mother and her brother at all times.

Just a few weeks ago, Brown posted a video to Instagram talking about stalking his exes to win them back.

"Ladies, y'all be complaining about n***as being, like, stalkers and in love with y'all, kinda crazy and shit and you get tired of it. Well, guess what? I'm one of them n***as! If I love you, bitch, ain't nobody gonna have you. I'm gonna make you miserable," he said. "I'm going to chase that n***a out and I'm gonna chase yo ass around, and it's done."
