Day Care Shames Parents on Phones

$
0
0

Another day, another way to shame parents. A Texas day care has gone viral due to a note they placed on their door

Texas daycare note

Texas daycare note

To sum it up, the note says that, hey, moms and dads, shut your phone off and pay attention to your child when you pick him or her up from day care. They're letting parents know that they've noticed eyes glued to phones instead of children at pickup, and this is no good, so stop it now.

On the surface, this may sound like a perfectly reasonable request. After all, it seems like people "these days" are attached to their phones on the regular and not paying attention to real life, which includes their kids. I can't tell you how many memes, articles or general social media posts are dedicated to bemoaning the current state of our always connected society and how detrimental that is to us all.

But you know what? Moms and dads who use day care (and who are we kidding, we know this is directed at moms with the "Mommy" bit included in the note) see their provider for brief moments in time, twice a day. With such a small snapshot of a parent's life, it's not only wildly unfair to judge a mother in this short length of time, it's inappropriate.

There are a hundred reasons a parent would be on her phone at day care pickup. For starters, moms who use day care are typically working moms, and with the already mentioned "always connected lifestyle" most everyone lives in, the workday doesn't always end when we leave our places of work. Last-minute emails come through. Fires need to be put out. A mom may be ordering pizza because she's too "over it" to cook that night. Or, OK, she may indeed be trying to finish her Candy Crush level that she started when she parked her car. So what?

The bottom line: Who cares what she's doing on her phone? You don't see how she interacts with her kids when they get to the car or what they do when they get home. Yes, it can be upsetting to see a parent ignoring her child, but if you go through your entire day and give your kid 100 percent of your undivided attention, then you're probably suffering for it (and your kid isn't learning patience and how to cope with a delay in gratification).

It's a challenge for all of us to live in the now. It really is. At any given moment, our attention is divided in a number of different ways (and nobody is immune to this), but the last thing we need to worry about is how we're being judged by people because we're looking at our phones.

Jules Wainstein, 'Most Honest Person,' Is Still Trashing Bethenny Frankel

Even after they stop filming The Real Housewives, the ladies from the show still bring the drama. That's especially true for Jules Wainstein and Bethenny Frankel, who hated each other when they were both on the show, and apparently don't feel any differently now that Wainstein has exited the series.

More: Bethenny Frankel Launches Charity to Help Women in Abusive Situations

Wainstein, who is on a new podcast with Josh McBride, Josh's Family Jules, used a recent episode to bash Frankel, who she claims targeted her during her one season on RHONY.

"I do the best I can as a mother, a friend. I do the best I can... no one can point a finger at you," Wainstein said. "As long as you’re a good person, a kind person, I think everyone is put on Earth to do and that. Bethenny can eat her heart out or whatever. That’s why I don’t think she looked so good on the show last year; she looked awful."

She added, "I have nothing to hide. I am the most honest person. I don’t do anything wrong."

LOL because people who "don't do anything wrong" don't usually star on reality TV, but anyway...

Even though Frankel was kind of nasty to her — and even went so far as to accuse her of "going on the show to get divorced" — Wainstein claimed she had no regrets about joining the show even though she quit after one season.

"It was hard being the new girl and all of them have known each other for years," she said. "I don’t regret it."

Meanwhile, Frankel is allegedly being harassed by her ex-husband, Jason Hoppy, who just got arrested for stalking her. Reports say he's sent her aggressive texts and emails and that he showed up to their daughter's school when he knew she would be there. Because of all that drama, a source told Page Six that Frankel skipped a recent Real Housewives photo shoot.

"All the other ‘Housewives’ were there," the insider said. "Bethenny was a no-show."

This Hilarious New Dating App Is Made for Debbie Downers

There's almost always a field on dating app profiles for hobbies, interests and likes. But what apps like Match, OkCupid and Tinder have been missing all along is a field for dislikes (lightbulb moment!). It may not seem intuitive, but think about it for a second: What bonds people better, faster and — fingers crossed — with more laughs than a subject that mutually disgusts them both? Such is the genius of new dating app Hater.

Currently available in beta for iOS, the app officially drops on Feb. 8 — just in time for Valentine's Day for all you Eeyore-ish romantics out there — and will become available to Android users later this spring. If you like the idea of narrowing the field of romantic prospects by leading with what you absolutely hate, then sign up, at which point you'll be offered 3,000 hand-selected topics to weigh in on. Among them: marijuana, build the wall, gluten-free and tipping less than 15 percent.

More: Why Breakups Are Likelier to Happen in Winter

"The more I thought about it, the more I thought, 'Hey, even though this was a funny idea, this actually makes a lot of sense,'" CEO Brendan Alper told The Cut. Alper, a 29-year-old ex-Goldman-Sachs-employee-turned-comedy-writer, says the idea first came to him as a potential comedy sketch. He adds that his team is taking the current crazy-heated political climate into account, realizing that plenty of haters might be drawn to the app as an outlet for their many gripes: "We view hate speech as completely unacceptable, we have zero tolerance for any sort of bigotry or hate speech or discrimination," he says.

Like lots of apps these days, Hater is swipe-based, meaning you swipe down for hate, up for love, right for like, left for dislike, and opt out for neutral. You can even click and see how many people responded with each reaction, so every term is like a mini-poll. Gotta admit, it sounds pretty damn smart — and also fun. If I were single, I'd definitely be signing up to see if I could find people who feel the same way I do about topics like camping (like), Taylor Swift as a person (dislike) and butt selfies (neutral).

3 Gynecologists on What Happens to Your Mind When You're Ovulating

There are a lot of ways I know that my time of the month is coming soon, and most of the ways aren’t so friendly to my body and my mind. There’s no doubt that when I’m ovulating, there are a lot of things going on that I have no idea about. Those things lead to my mood changes, my body aches and my extreme desire to put my head on my pillow and doze off midday.

Since most women ovulate once a month, it’s important to know what exactly is going on inside our brains when this is happening. Check out what gynecologists say about what really happens when we are ovulating.

More: 8 Ways Ovulation Makes You Do Weird Things

A lot of feels at once

It’s hard to explain to anyone who isn’t a female, but when you’re ovulating, you may feel a handful of things all at once, making you seem outwardly moody and inwardly like you’re becoming a crazy person.

According to Dr. Carolyn Alexander, an OB-GYN also specializing in reproductive endocrinology and fertility, ovulation brings about a whole lot of feels.

“When a woman is ovulating, there is a wide spectrum of feelings she may experience,” says Alexander. “There is a rise in estradiol and testosterone that can increase libido, lubrication and desire for intimacy. Some women may have more sensual dreams. Some women have a spring cleaning frenzy.”

More: How You Could Be Pregnant With No Symptoms

You get irritable

If you’ve ever wondered what the link was between ovulation and feeling extreme irritability, Dr. Janet Choi, a top reproductive endocrinologist with CCRM-New York, a leading fertility clinic, explains the reasons we have such an up and down experience with our hormones during this time.

“Typically, both progesterone and estrogen levels rise in the first week after ovulation only to fall again in the second week following ovulation/before the next period starts," says Choi. “For some women, these ups and downs in hormones may affect certain neurotransmitters (like serotonin) in the brain, leading to an increase in irritability or anxiety and/or depressed mood.”

Naps seem best

One of the telltale signs that you are ovulating is the desire to just want to take a nap all day, every day. Feeling tired and fatigued is a common symptom of ovulation, and according to Dr. Jane Frederick, a gynecologist and fertility specialist, it’s due to a rise in progesterone.

“While you are ovulating, progesterone continues to rise while the estrogen hormone levels out," says Frederick. “The continued rise in progesterone can also cause fatigue.”

The Fact That People Still Seriously Call Wendy Williams a Man Is Really Sad

Yes, Wendy Williams is undoubtedly controversial. She's criticized Paris Jackson's racial identity, made a punch line out of Britney Spears' mental health and made irresponsible comments about Kesha's sexual assault lawsuit — just to start.

But still. Just because Williams has said some things that aren't exactly, um, polite doesn't mean the public has the greenlight to call her gender identity into question and say she looks like a man. And even though it's 2017, this still happens to her. All. The. Time.

Seriously? Because questioning someone's gender identity is the ultimate dis and the epitome of original comedy. Not.

And it's not like Williams hasn't already addressed the issue. In fact, she's been extremely candid about it.

Williams admitted years ago that people think she was born a man and recognizes there's not much she can do about it.

"I get where that comes from, but in my opinion, there's no worse way to insult a woman than to say she looks like a man… [but] there's nothing you can call me at this particular point," she said in a 2014 interview with ABC News. "I've been dealing with this for decades."

New Ben & Jerry's Bars Will Make You Happily Say Bye to Self-Control

Amidst a barrage of stressful news, it seems that our biggest comforts are pregnant Beyoncé and ice cream. To that end, Ben & Jerry's just announced Pint Slices, a new line of chocolate-covered ice cream bars that come in single-serve packaging, making it easier than ever to dig into your favorite flavor wherever, whenever. Honestly? While I crave this kind of convenience, it also makes me a little nervous.

More: Ben & Jerry's new Core flavors taste test: Here's how they stacked up

Like, a regular container of Ben and Jerry's doesn't stand a chance once it gets into my freezer. If I'd do crazy things to get my hands on a Klondike Bar, then I don't even want to imagine how far I'd go for Pint Slices, which come in four insanely good-sounding flavors: Americone Dream (vanilla with caramel swirls and fudge-covered waffle cone pieces), Chocolate Fudge Brownie (chocolate with fudge brownie pieces), Chocolate Chip Cookie Dough (vanilla, cookie dough chunks, fudge flakes) and Vanilla Peanut Butter Cup (the name speaks for itself). Sorry, childhood! Chocolate and vanilla just don't cut it anymore.

And for those of you who don't eat ice cream like you're still in college (ahem, directly from the container), the individual portion size is pretty convenient too. Pint Slices are now available at most Ben & Jerry's scoop shops, and they'll be rolling out in grocery stores across the country soon. My advice? Start clearing freezer space now.

8 Reasons You Should Pee in the Shower (And Not Feel Gross About It)

$
0
0

Shower-peers, rejoice! You may have spent decades in the shadows, desperately trying to keep your dirty secret hidden, but now it's time to step up and declare, "I pee in the shower, and I'm damn proud."

That's right, we have cold hard facts to prove what we've all been thinking in the back of our minds for as long as we can remember: Peeing in the shower is a good thing. The University of East Anglia actually created a whole program dedicated to it, and the school's "Go with the Flow" campaign went mainstream in 2014 after two students estimated that peeing in the shower could save the campus 187 million gallons of water a year.

Here are all the reasons why peeing in the shower is even better than going in the toilet.

1. It's economical

UofEA estimates that the new program will save the university over $230,000 a year in water costs. Your personal savings might not be that impressive (although who knows how much you pee?) but who wouldn't love to lighten up their utility bill?

More: 12 Chemicals that can hurt your child's brain

2. It's good for the environment

Administrators at UofEA say, "With 15,000 students at UEA, over a year we would save enough water to fill an Olympic-sized swimming pool 26 times over." They did not comment on how much of that pool water was already filled with urine but now you're imagining it. You're welcome. Plus, less paper waste in the sewage system means less cleanup needed.

3. It's more hygienic

Many public health officials have long wondered how toilet paper ended up as the clean standard for post-potty clean up. But it was Will.i.am who explained the dilemma best: "Get some chocolate, wipe it on a wooden floor, and then try to get it up with some dry towels. You’re going to get chocolate in the cracks. That’s why you gotta get them baby wipes."

Dry paper just kind of smears things around and for women, wiping back to front can introduce bacteria into the urethra causing a painful infection. No such problem in the shower where clean water rinses everything down and out!

4. It's cleaner

We're not as bad as men but women can also drip, leak or otherwise "mist" the toilet seat. I don't know how it happens but it just does. Add toilet paper to the mix and, well, that's how you end up with gas station restrooms. There's a reason that many countries outside America use bidets, toilet-like devices that squirt water for bottom cleaning.

5. It will make you prepared

When's the last time you peed in the wild? It's not a skill many grown women cultivate and it's pretty seldom you need to employ the squat method but if you ever do, your morning shower sessions will make it that much easier to let it flow!

More: 8 first-period stories that will make yours seem like a cakewalk

6. It will improve your aim

Did you know girls can aim their pee too? We may not be able to write our names in the snow or put out a campfire but we can still learn to control the flow and direction. And hey, you needed to get your Kegels in anyhow!

7. It's fun

Yeah, I said it. Grown-ups don't get to do a lot of subversive things on a daily basis, but peeing in the shower can be your little act of rebellion for the day.

More: The harmful preservative you didn't know was in your body products

8. It's not as weird as you think it is

In a Today Show poll, over 80 percent of people admitted to being mellow with the yellow in the shower. (Al Roker was the lone holdout among the hosts, in case you were curious.) Peeing in the shower is quicker and more convenient. 'Nuff said.

The Best Super Bowl LI Commercials That Have Already Been Released

Oh, the drama! Oh, the excitement! Oh, the household names! No, I’m not talking about football, I’m talking about the commercials that are sprinkled throughout the football. Whether you are into the actual game taking place on the field on Super Bowl Sunday, or whether you are more into the Puppy Bowl, everybody loves a good Super Bowl commercial–which are often filled with surprises, new products, and delightful cameos. At a sticker-shocking price tag of $5.02 million per 30-second spot, they better be good.

While some companies save their Super Bowl ads for the big game, others release their commercials early. Below, we’ve collected some of the most exciting spots released so far.

If you had told me that I might get a little teary-eyed at the new Budweiser commercial, I would have assumed that you had had one too many. But here we are approaching Super Bowl LI, and the domestic brew king has put aside the Clydesdales and hit a home run with a timely, touching one-minute ad that follows the immigration story of founder Adolphus Busch. It puts a lot of things in perspective and leaves you a little thirsty.

Skittles “Romance”

Skittles’ super-successful advertising year is rolling into 2017 with a cute and funny 30-second spot featuring, among other things, a slightly inept Romeo, a girl named Katie, Katie’s grandmother, and what I think might be a beaver? The ad has only been posted on YouTube for a week, and it already has 4.5 million views.

Mercedes-Benz “Easy Driver”

You know you are pulling out all of the stops when you hire the Cohen Brothers to direct your one-minute Super Bowl ad. The legendary film-making duo does not disappoint in this spot for the Mercedes-AMG GT Roadster, which stars Peter Fonda and takes place at a very intimidating biker bar.

Squarespace “John Malcovich”

John Malcovich is a delight, even when he is being weird and angry. Maybe especially when he is being weird and angry. Web design and domain hosting company Sqaurespace took full advantage in their one-minute ad spot, which depicts the actor finding out that another John Malcovich has already claimed his domain name. I dare you not to laugh when he shouts, “Get out of my name!”

Intel “Brady Everyday”

Intel took a gamble and won by casting Super Bowl LI starting quarterback Tom Brady in their commercial for Intel 360° Technology. The spot dramatizes the Patriots star’s morning routine, which might be fun for fans but lacks much interest for others.

Turbo Tax “Humpty Fall”

Sadly, football season is followed closely by the significantly-less-fun tax season. To help us get through these tough times, Turbo Tax has created a 45-second Super Bowl ad that takes a perfectly dark and funny look at what it might be like if Humpty Dumpty used the Turbo Tax mobile app to file his taxes.

Web development platform Wix.com is throwing its hat into the Super Bowl ad ring this year with an high-speed spot starring action stars Jason Statham and Gal Gadot. Funny and fun, the commercial shows the duo destroying a restaurant during hand-to-hand combat while the owner is busy creating the perfect website.

Mr. Clean “Cleaner of Your Dreams”

Have you ever had a thing for Mr. Clean? No, me neither. But in Proctor & Gamble’s first ever Super Bowl spot staring the bald mopper, he is looking a little more desirable, if only because he is tackling shower scum. Two thumbs up, both for creativity and for breaking the tired cleaning commercial trope that janitorial duties are primarily for women.

Besides Budweiser's pro-immigration ad, he big Super Bowl commercial winner for me so far is Ford’s 90-second spot that focuses on new innovations and concepts like self-driving cars, ride sharing, bike sharing, and electric cars. The ad is beautifully shot, filled with everyday moments and totally tapped in to some real, human emotions, all with Nina Simone singing in the background and Bryan Cranston’s voiceover.

T-Mobile "#UnilmitedMoves"

Justin Bieber, Rob Gronkowski, and Terrell Owens team up for T-Mobile's Super Bowl ad, which explores the history of the celebration dance and introduces T-Mobile One, a flat-rate cell plan that includes unlimited data and calls. Come for the attractive superstars, stay for the dance moves.

Buick's new Super Bowl ad asks us to imagine what it would be like if Cam Newton played on your kid's pee wee football team (and also what it would be like if your kid's pee wee football coach was Miranda Kerr). The result is cute, light 60-second commercial that also highlights two newly-designed Buicks, the Cascada convertible and Encore compact luxury SUV.

Kia "Holding Out for a Hero"

I love everything Melissa McCarthy touches, and this year for Kia's big game day ad, she is getting into a bunch of hilarious messes while trying to save the world. The one-minute Super Bowl commercial leans hard on physical comedy, but it's a light and fun romp from the icebergs of Antarctica to the plains of Africa. The environmentally-friendly product is also worth the watch: Kia is unveiling its redesigned hybrid SUV crossover, the Niro.

My Old Boss Is Giving Me A Negative Reference

$

Question:

After six months of work misery, I finally quit a job where I liked my coworkers but worked under a supervisor I couldn’t stand.

In the past, I’ve never had problems getting a job and always had a new job within a week of leaving an old job. Not this time. I’ve been job hunting for three months and not had one offer. I’d thought the job I left was dead and buried, but after two months I began to realize my former supervisor was reaching beyond the grave and giving me a negative reference.

More: I feel complicit in my boss cheating our customers

As soon as I figured this out, I decided to stop using my stock answer to “why are you in the job market?” Always before I said that I was eager for a new challenge and thought the job they offered was that challenge. That always got me a smile.

So, when I was asked why I left my last job during my last three interviews, I told the truth, and explained I’d liked the company, the work and my coworkers, but that I’d worked for a difficult supervisor no one liked. The interviewers nodded appreciatively, but I’ve received no job offers. What do I do now?

More: I agreed to be a coworker's bridesmaid but I can't afford it

Answer:

You can find out what your former supervisor is saying by having someone you know conduct a reference check. The chances are good that a supervisor you detested will give you a negative to neutral and not a positive reference.

Meanwhile, like most people, you’ve sized up a problem and decided the blame lies elsewhere. You may, however, be sabotaging yourself.

First, you’re used to getting a job right away, and that may have led you to leave some jobs as soon as the going got rough. That’s okay when you first enter the job market and move quickly upward into jobs offering increased responsibility, but when prospective employers look at a resume filled with multiple short-term jobs, they often put it aside in favor of resumes that show an applicant lasted two years or more in their last several jobs.

More: What happens when personal values collide with company policy?

Second, when an interviewer hears an applicant bad-mouth their past supervisor, what plays through their mind isn’t “oh, this poor applicant” but “this person may be a blamer who won’t get along with me either.” When this happens, the interviewer never calls your former supervisor for a reference stage – because you ruled yourself out.

What can you do? Ask someone to conduct a reference check for you, vow you’ll not bad-mouth your former supervisor and stay at your next job a minimum of a year.

Mariah Carey Writhes Around in Leather & Lace Atop a Car in New Video

If there were any doubt left that Mariah Carey's new song "I Don't" is just a big musical "fuck you" to James Packer, her new video should take care of that.

The full video won't drop until Friday, but Carey's been teasing it every possible chance. First there was a clip of her recording the new song on Sunday's episode of Mariah's World. Then she posted a clip to her Instagram. Now she's giving us all a sneak peek of the music video, which (obviously) features her in lots of skimpy outfits made of leather and lace. The lace one is super bridal-looking just in case anyone missed the fact that this song is about her ex-fiancé. The leather outfit barely covers her boobs. And also she's writhing on top of a car for some reason. All that comes after she literally flips off the camera. This message is not subtle.

The clip has already racked up almost 400,000 views on Instagram, and Carey's followers are definitely here for it. "YOU ARE THE REAL QUEEN OF MUSIC," one follower wrote in the comments. I probably wouldn't go that far, and honestly I don't dig the song at all. But still, I wish I could handle a breakup as well as Carey is.

The point is that even though the song sounds a little meh (don't @ me), Carey looks super hot. Writhing on top of a car doesn't make any sense and most people would probably look dumb doing it, but there's no doubt Packer will take note. Someone is winning this breakup, and it isn't him.

VPR's Jax Taylor Makes a Serious Claim About James Kennedy

I'll be the first one to tell you that Vanderpump Rules' James Kennedy is a terrible, awful, shitty, annoying person, and I really wish he would just leave the show and maybe planet Earth. But there is one person in this world who hates Kennedy more than I do: Jax Taylor.

More: Jax Taylor's Girlfriend's Parents Are Itching for Them to Get Hitched

The normal thing to do when you despise someone is to avoid being around them. But like any good reality TV star, Taylor does exactly the opposite of that and basically lives to antagonize Kennedy, even though he got fired from SUR. On Monday night's episode, that meant going with the group to a club where Kennedy was performing and instigating a fight.

After the episode, though, Taylor defended his actions on Twitter and also dropped a HUGE BOMB: He claimed that Kennedy has gotten physically violent with women. Say what?

This is big news. On VPR, we've only ever seen Kennedy on the receiving end of physical violence — he's been punched by Kristen Doute and slapped by GG. He definitely hasn't ever hit a girl on screen, but if that's actually a thing he does, he's even worse than we thought.

Then again, we all know about Taylor's famously loose interpretation of the truth, so this could all just be him making shit up again. That would be an ugly accusation to make if it weren't true, but that's never stopped Jax Taylor from lying before.

Do High-Tech Baby Monitors Do More Harm Than Good?

$
0

Modern technology can definitely make our lives as parents easier. From electric breast pumps to digital thermometers (digital anything, really), we may be able to save time, get answers and preserve our sanity by relying on these high-tech gadgets. But are they really making our lives easier? Or are they adding to our stress?

When it comes to high-tech baby monitors (those that connect wirelessly to a smartphone and alert parents to changes in their child's breathing rate or pulse), some medical professionals have argued that they're doing more harm than good by instilling fear and self-doubt in parents whose babies are perfectly healthy.

More: When it comes to breast milk, baby boys get the better deal

The ultra-modern monitors replace the old-school versions, which simply transmit any noise the child makes to a radio receiver. The manufacturers of the so-called "smart monitors" claim they reduce stress because parents don't have to worry about going out of earshot of the receiver (or walk around the house with it in their hand.)

But an opinion piece from child health experts at the University of Pennsylvania published in the JAMA medical journal argues that there is potential for the smart monitor to get the signs wrong, leading to unnecessary panic. At the very least, the authors found no evidence that the modern devices do anything useful. Gadgets mentioned in the piece include the Baby Vida, MonBaby, Owlet, Snuza Pico, and Sproutling wearables, which come as smart socks, onesies and diaper clips and cost anywhere from $150 to $300 each.

"These devices are marketed aggressively to parents of healthy babies, promising peace of mind about their child’s cardiorespiratory health," said pediatrician Dr. Christopher P. Bonafide from the Children’s Hospital of Philadelphia. "But there is no evidence that these consumer infant physiological monitors are life-saving or even accurate, and these products may cause unnecessary fear, uncertainty and self-doubt in parents."

While these devices don't make specific claims about being able to prevents SIDS or reduce a baby's distress (meaning they don't have to be regulated by the FDA), there's no doubt that most parents keen to do everything within their power to keep their infants safe will believe that the more high-tech a monitor is, the better.

But in this case, it could be that listening out for your baby's cries through a crackly radio receiver can't be beaten.

Brother Husbands Is the New Sister Wives, Except Way, Way Better

For anyone who has watched Sister Wives and thought (correctly), "This show is a sexist mess," TLC just showed up. Brother Husbands is coming, and yes, it is exactly what it sounds like.

More: Why It Is Significant That the Sister Wives Were at the Women's March

Details about the new show are pretty scarce so far, but we do know it'll feature wife Amanda, her two husbands, Chad and Jeremy, and their five kids. Apparently, two of the kids are Chad's and three are Jeremy's, but how do they know that? Do they have to get paternity tests for all their children? That may be the No. 1 question that had better be answered in the pilot episode, TLC.

The show's official description is vague, but wonderful.

"Amanda has a very full love life with not one, but two husbands, and navigates a polyamorous relationship with both of them and their five children," it reads. I love this show already.

More: Kody Brown and His Wives Are Now Exiled From Their Polygamist Church

But for fans of Sister Wives, this is gonna be a wild ride. While the Brown family is conservative and religious, Amanda, Jeremy and Chad are all kinds of hipstery-looking millennials, and apparently live very modern lives.

TLC Brother Husbands

I just have so many questions. Whose last name did Amanda take, if any? Do they all live in the same house? Do the husbands have separate bedrooms? Does Amanda get down with them one at a time, or is there some ménage à trois action in their house? Is that TMI for a TLC show? I don't even care. I need to know.

More: The Sister Wives' Fight to Legalize Polygamy Just Ended

Apparently, for now, Brother Husbands is just a one-time special that is set to air on a Sunday. That's unacceptable, though, and it needs to become a full series. Everyone tell TLC what's up.

Why Beyoncé May Have Decided to Announce Her Pregnancy on Feb. 1

$

A few minor things happened this week. Former president Obama wore a baseball hat backward (which felt good for everyone); the reserves of bacon hit a 50 year low (who knew we have reserves of bacon?); and Beyoncé and Jay-Z straight-up stopped time with a casual Instagram announcement of their pregnancy. Twins no less!

Beyoncé's Twins Pregnancy Announcement

Beyoncé's Twins Pregnancy Announcement

Work must have ground to a halt because half-a-million tweets went out within just 45 minutes of the announcement, and the photo set a Guinness record as the most-liked Instagram ever within 7 hours.

More: You'd better believe Beyoncé's made the list of most controversial videos of 2016

But what I really want to talk about is the date of the pregnancy announcement

Why did Queen Bey choose Feb. 1? Was there any significance behind it or did she just roll out of bed and think, "Ya, today's a good day to shake shit up."

There’s one obvious hint that this announcement has been a long time in the making: the initial photo. That was no snap uploaded off a proud partner’s iPhone, that’s a full-fledged photo shoot with publicists and lighting experts waiting in the wings. I mean seriously, nobody doubts that Beyoncé wakes to the bluest of blue skies and enjoys glorious floral arrangements in every room. But does anyone really have a full-length veil just laying around? I rest my case.

And we probably don't have to point this out but in the photo, Beyoncé appears to be several months along. It’s possible the Carters (as she so sweetly signed off on the announcement) have been waiting to share their good news on Feb. 1 as way to celebrate Black History Month. Whether it was intentional or not (it totally was) – the Beyhive definitely thought she helped start the celebrations off with a bang.

Beyoncé's Tweet Black History Month #2

Beyoncé's Tweet Black History Month #2

And it would make sense if Beyoncé planned to unveil her good news in this very specific way, considering how much thought she put into announcing her first pregnancy. Bey told Harper’s Bazaar how important agency is to her in light of her celebrity status: “I put a lot of thought into how I wanted to unveil it. It was important to me that I was able to do it myself. I was extremely nervous. It was the toughest red carpet I ever did. I decided to say nothing and proudly show my baby bump.”

Why announcing her pregnancy on the first day of Black History Month makes all the sense

Though both Jay and Bey have always been politically and socially active the country has changed since she innocently announced Blue Ivy with a subtle rub of her bump at 2011’s VMAs. And whether due to age, motherhood or social unrest, Beyoncé has become bolder about commenting on racism, feminism and power. In 2014 her spot at the top of Time’s 100 Most Influential People list drew criticism over her skimpy costumes and sexualized lyrics. By 2016, following her performance of Formation at the Super Bowl, the criticism had grown to accusations that she was glorifying the Black Panthers and had joined the ranks of "angry black women."

More: Beyoncé's's pregnancy news is great, but let's talk about that photo

In reality, Beyoncé has always been a proud African-American and a spokesperson for women. Along with her husband she put up bail money for protestors in Ferguson and Baltimore, and donated to help Black Lives Matter develop their infrastructure. She brought 4 black mothers who lost children in police shootings to the 2016 VMAs. She joined the Ban Bossy campaign, which aims to help girls reframe their ideas about assertiveness, and Gucci’s Chime for Change initiative to support women’s rights worldwide. And Britain’s Telegraph news included her with Prime Minister Teresa May, Queen Elizabeth, and Hilary Clinton on their list of the 10 most influential and inspirational women of 2016. By choosing to announce this news, on this day, she honored two characteristics she cherishes.

Fans are already buzzing with theories about what the hints of pink and blue in the photo might mean, or how long she’s been throwing off hints in public. But no doubt she’s having a happy week knowing that for the second time her inner circle protected her secret and let her claim this special moment as her own.

Ultimate Woke Bae Angelina Jolie is Speaking Out For Refugees

$

Angelina Jolie has never been shy about being political. She's worked extensively as an activist all over the world, and one of her passions is providing help for refugees. That's why it's really no surprise that her op-ed in the New York Times calling for the U.S. to fix its refugee policy is kind of everything. It's passionate and articulate, though we'd expect nothing less.

More: Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt's Divorce Gets Some #WhitePeopleProblems

"Refugees are men, women and children caught in the fury of war, or the cross hairs of persecution. Far from being terrorists, they are often the victims of terrorism themselves," Jolie wrote. "I’m proud of our country’s history of giving shelter to the most vulnerable people. Americans have shed blood to defend the idea that human rights transcend culture, geography, ethnicity and religion. The decision to suspend the resettlement of refugees to the United States and deny entry to citizens of seven Muslim-majority countries has been met with shock by our friends around the world precisely because of this record."

Jolie writes that the global threat of terrorism makes it perfectly acceptable for the U.S. to take steps to protect itself, but she's also points out that refugees are definitely not terrorists, and they don't pose any threat at all to the country (something that should be common knowledge, so good for her for writing about it so eloquently when it probably makes her want to scream). She also writes about her own experiences with her six kids, all of whom are adopted from other countries.

"As the mother of six children, who were all born in foreign lands and are proud American citizens, I very much want our country to be safe for them, and all our nation’s children," she says. "But I also want to know that refugee children who qualify for asylum will always have a chance to plead their case to a compassionate America. And that we can manage our security without writing off citizens of entire countries — even babies — as unsafe to visit our country by virtue of geography or religion."

Jolie ends her piece with a plea to focus our energy on fighting actual threats, and not using refugees as a scapegoat.

"The lesson of the years we have spent fighting terrorism since Sept. 11 is that every time we depart from our values we worsen the very problem we are trying to contain. We must never allow our values to become the collateral damage of a search for greater security. Shutting our door to refugees or discriminating among them is not our way, and does not make us safer. Acting out of fear is not our way. Targeting the weakest does not show strength," she writes. "We all want to keep our country safe. So we must look to the sources of the terrorist threat — to the conflicts that give space and oxygen to groups like the Islamic State, and the despair and lawlessness on which they feed. We have to make common cause with people of all faiths and backgrounds fighting the same threat and seeking the same security. This is where I would hope any president of our great nation would lead on behalf of all Americans."

J.K. Rowling Is an Actual Pro at Shutting Down Twitter Trolls

J.K. Rowling is legendary on Twitter. She can shut down a troll faster than you can say, “Delete your account.” She reaches Chrissy Teigen levels of shade without so much as raising an eyebrow. We like to picture her casually scrolling through her mentions, pausing at a particularly audacious one, tapping out a pithy response with a few finger taps and going back to whatever it was she was doing, which was probably slaying dragons. Or getting a manicure. Or reading a book. Whatever. Who knows? Point is, she was definitely doing something more important than shutting down internet trolls.

Her latest fiery tweets come as a result of her former supporters’ wrath over Rowling’s anti-Trump (and anti-Pence) sentiments. (To which we say, "thank you, ma’am.") One supporter apparently didn’t like hearing about Rowling’s political views and decided to tweet as much at her. "glad i caught this article on yahoo. [Maybe this one?] i will now burn your books and movies too,” one Twitter troll said.

While a mere mortal may have agonized over what to say back or ignored this comment altogether, Rowling put the unnamed tweeter in their place in one fell swoop: “Well, the fumes from the DVDs might be toxic and I've still got your money, so by all means borrow my lighter."

Pornhub Launches New Sex Ed Site

$

Porn has become the default sex ed for significant numbers of America’s youth, especially in areas featuring abstinence-only education. In response, yesterday Pornhub — a web destination for adult entertainment catering to nearly 70 million daily visitors — launched a new free online sex ed resource center aiming to provide users with original editorial content and advice on sexuality, sexual health and relationships.

Adult entertainment and education

Dr. Laurie Betito — a clinical psychologist with 30 years of experience in sex therapy — directs the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center, which will also feature contributions from Dr. Kat Van Kirk, Dr. Zhana Vrangalova — both experts in human sexuality — trans community leader Sophia Banks, sex coach Dr. Stacey Friedman, sex tech writer Kitty Gray and Dr. Bryant Paul of the Indiana University Media School, among others.

More: Sex Education at 4 Years Old Isn't as Crazy as It Sounds

"As a psychologist specializing in sexual health, I have given advice for over three decades to people from all walks of life through my private practice as well as my radio program,” Betito said in a press release. “One thing I have realized is that, no matter our background or desires, sexual education — mental, physical, emotional and spiritual — plays a vital role in our society. It has always been a dream to connect with, educate and inform people all over the world on a massive scale. Heading the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center is an opportunity to reach a global audience and provide a source for healthy sexual education and dialogue.”

Pornhub Vice President Corey Price said that the sex ed offshoot site was created to “provide our fans with a trusted educational platform they can utilize as their go-to resource for information and advice when it comes to sex” and wants users to think of it as a one-stop shop, available 24/7.

“We understand the importance of educating the general public on a wide range of topics pertaining to sexual health and awareness, and saw an opportunity to deliver knowledge and understanding through renowned doctors and experts,” Price said in a press release.

Constant content

So what’s actually on the site? First, you should know that if you don’t want to see a screen full of people having sex in a lot of creative positions, go directly to the Sexual Wellness Center portion of the site by visiting www.pornhub.com/sex/ rather than locating it through the Pornhub homepage (trust me on this one).

Second, for the time being, the site is primarily text — not instructional videos, as one might imagine (which is definitely not a bad thing). Even sections on male and female reproductive anatomy, which would benefit from a visual or two — were blocks of text.

Third, it is actually relatively inclusive. There is a whole section called “Trans 101” that explains relevant terminology and abbreviations for those unfamiliar with this aspect of sexual health and an article on porn staple lesbian sex.

The Sexual Wellness Center is definitely still in its early days (the landing page is still a test screen), but clicking through the various menu options presents information on a range of topics from play parties and period sex, to STIs and consent.

Learning should be fun — and inclusive

Dr. Mimi Arbeit, a developmental psychologist and a sex educator, noted that while many teens and adults turn to the internet for sexual health information, often those who need or could benefit from sex ed don’t actively go searching for it or know where to look. In those cases, having a resource like the Sexual Wellness Center would be helpful so the information is available where people are already going.

“I like the idea of having the health stuff and the pleasure stuff next to each other,” Arbeit told SheKnows. “Some sex ed resources are all of the facts and none of the fun. People who turn to porn as part of the pursuit of sexual pleasure can now integrate that with getting information about condoms or getting relationship advice.”

More: What Everyday Men and Women Really Think of Porn

Arbeit’s main concerns about a sex ed resource being hosted on an adult entertainment site are primarily regarding the problems of the porn industry being reproduced within the sex ed portion as well, primarily with regard to gender roles, heterosexism, cisnormativity, White normativity and non-consensual violence. Though she said that she would love to see the Sexual Wellness Center directly address that, she’s skeptical regarding how effective that would be, and whether the site would include resources about critical media consumption.

Ideally, Arbeit noted, the Pornhub Sexual Wellness Center would include guidelines on how to find feminist, queer, anti-racist, consensual pornography as well as info about how to talk about pornography with a partner and advice for people concerned about their own pornography use.

“But then, Pornhub is not in the best position to take that on because it could be seen as against their financial interests,” she explained. “It is a business, after all.”

For those looking for alternative sex ed resources, Arbeit recommends Scarleteen, a sex ed website designed for teens and young adults that’s great for folks of all ages. Other fabulous sex educators to watch out for include Aida ManduleyIgnacio RiveraLaci Green and Ericka Hart.

What These 6 Food Label Terms Actually Mean

$

0

What's a woman gotta do to eat ethically? A lot, actually. Maybe you’re a serious animal welfare advocate or maybe you just want to be a responsible consumer. Either way, you probably don’t have hours to spend scouring supermarket aisles and examining the fine print on every product. When it comes to ethical brands, we often end up relying on logos and commercials, but those can be deceptive and misleading. To simplify things, we've investigated what you need to know about food labels to become a truly conscious food shopper.

First off, there are a lot of terms you'll see out there, and it's important to break down which ones actually mean what because it's not always so obvious. As per the Humane Society, here’s a quick refresher:

Organic: Animals have their own bedding material along with access to the outdoors. Hormones and antibiotics are also banned under these standards.

Cage-free: Chickens weren’t cooped up in a tiny, confined cage as they laid their eggs.

Free-range: Animals have access to the outdoor pasture.

Hormone-free: Animals did not receive any supplements that increased their natural growth and production.

Grass-Fed: Animals have constant access to the outdoors, where they graze on grass and forage rather than feed on grains.

No tail-docking: Prohibits farmers from removing the tails of their animals.

More: Nutrition Label Confusion and How to Avoid It

Seems straightforward, right? Well, not exactly. When you see those little stickers on the packaging of meats and eggs, it’s important to know that in reality, they have absolutely no set implications, especially when it comes to animal welfare. For instance, if a certain brand of meat or eggs is labeled “organic,” outdoor space is required for the animal, but the quality of and total space designated to the animal’s outdoor access isn’t regulated. Hormones are prohibited, but other painful surgeries are, in fact, allowed. So, the organic-certified company technically met the required USDA standards regarding proper animal treatment, but the standards may not be as rigorous or truly “humane” as those held by other groups.

When it comes to animal welfare, as The New York Times put it,humane” is a word that has no real governmental definition, and thus lacks regulation on how it can be used on a label. To different companies, describing themselves with phrases like "sustainably raised animals" or "ethical handling" can, in reality, mean entirely different things, and it is often just a marketing ploy.

When a farm gets an animal welfare certification, however, that's a different story. There are three prominent certification brands whose seals you’re likely to find on the packaging of meat and eggs: “American Humane Certified,” “Certified Humane” and “Animal Welfare Approved.” These seals can give you more in-depth knowledge about the farm and their respective welfare practices. Each farm not only has to apply for a certain welfare certification, but also pay for the certification as well.

This all sounds logical — a company must prove that they deserve to have this designation prior to presenting themselves as ethical to consumers — but as you may have expected, there’s a catch. Each certification organization has varying standards, allowing farms to quietly pick the certification standards to which their practices already align and allowing certification brands to pick the standards to which a large number of their commercial clients meet with ease. In other words, all the companies involved have the motivation and ability to put their business interests before the well-being of animals. Yikes.

To help dispel the confusion surrounding this industry, the Times organized each group’s practices in a helpful chart, but we've also broken down the basics of each:

1. The American Humane Association: Access to a pasture is not required for certain periods of an animal’s life, and birds are solely kept in cramped cages. While cattle branding is prohibited, beak trimming and tail docking occur regularly and without pain relief. Piglets are taken from their mother at 21 days old. Their certified producers include store name brands such as Simply Balanced by Target, Eggland's Best and Butterball.

2. Humane Farm Animal Care: Continuous access to pasture is not required for their animals. Beak trimming, tail docking and cattle branding are allowed under specific circumstances. No outdoor space is provided to nesting hens, but all indoor birds and pigs get adequate bedding materials and environmental enrichment. Their certified producers are found in restaurants and supermarkets and include Green Valley Organics, Nellie's Free Range Eggs and Murray's Chicken.

3. Animal Welfare Approved: Animals have continuous access to outdoor pasture space, where they naturally graze. Beak trimming, tail docking and cattle branding are prohibited at all times. Offers the largest minimum indoor area for cattle, pigs and birds. Piglets are taken from their mother once they are at least 42 days old. The organization also works to support small family farmers. Their certified producers are smaller and more local brands and can be found at farmer's markets, restaurants and select grocery stores.

So, if you can digest all of that (ha), which aisle should you go to on your next grocery trip? Jean Halloran, the director of food policy initiatives at Consumers Union, told The New York Times, "The only one we have any confidence in and think gives you value for your money is Animal Welfare Approved. The rest of them have, to greater and lesser degrees, shortcomings — and American Humane in particular has a lot of shortcomings.” Even for experts, it's hard to find a single food that is all-around ethical, and to find brands that are completely transparent. But if you're still determined, it's definitely worth doing some investigating before you buy.

Is it Feb. 12 yet? It feels like we've been waiting so long for The Walking Dead to return that time may have actually started moving backward. Of course, this hasn't been the longest break ever, so it could just be that I'm terribly impatient. In my defense, AMC keeps dropping juicy little morsels of teaser clips that keep me tantalized.

More: At Least One Walking Dead Star 'Hated' the First Half of Season 7

The latest of which is only 15 seconds long. That's it — just 15 seconds, y'all. That's less time than it takes me each week to decide I want to marry Norman Reedus (surely the current husband would make room), and that's really saying something.

Check it out, and then catch me after the jump to discuss, m'kay?

TWD Teaser Clip

TWD Teaser Clip

Brief though it may be, this teaser clip did contain a few moments that straight-up piqued my curiosity. We'll start with the softball here: Eugene, appearing to perform some sort of nerdy, chemistry-inspired, fire-wielding party trick to impress some random chicks who were apparently dressed for a night on the town.

TWD Eugene
Image: AMC

Wait, where did these women come from? Since when did the zombocalypse become a black-tie kind of shindig? And when did Eugene stop being, uh, you know... Eugene? He's not exactly a ladies' man.

Moving onto the next point of interest, can we bow our heads in a moment of silence for the sound sleep we used to all get before seeing the spiky iron walker of doom? Jesus take the wheel, that thing is terrifying.

If Hellraiser and Silent Hill met, fell in love and had little dystopian babies, this would be that unholy offspring.

As nightmarish as that denizen of the undead is, though, he was basically outshined by one very important (albeit super-brief) cameo from everyone's favorite suburban mom-turned-total badass: Carol.

In a mere flash, Carol appears standing in a dense wood with her gun trained on something just out of sight.

TWD Carol
Image: AMC

That's right — I said her gun. It looks to me like Carol could be locked, loaded and ready to unload. Could it be that the second half of Season 7 will bring back the Carol of old? Oh, how we've missed that Carol. Shit, we've missed any version of Carol this season considering she's only been in, like, two episodes.

Sure, her journey through pacifism and spiritualism (not to mention abject despair) has been interesting. It's Carol... she could make anything interesting. And OK, we all kind of get where she was coming from with that, right?

You can't really blame her for being in the bell jar, given the circumstances.

If Carol isn't her old badass self yet in this teaser clip, then it appears as though that version of herself is at least trying to break through. Perhaps she's trying to get used to the feel of a gun in her hand again. Maybe she's out taking a little target practice.

More: Shit's About to Get Real, According to The Walking Dead's New Synopsis

But since there also appears to be a gun holstered at her side, I'm all for throwing caution to the wind and feeling wildly optimistic that Negan is about to have some OG Carol all up in his biz.

What do you think? Is our beloved Carol coming back?

What Kim Kardashian & Chrissy Teigen's Book Club Will (Probably) Look Like

While we were all lying on couches fanning ourselves after the big Beyoncé news yesterday, Kim Kardashian West slipped a tiny yet similarly delightful announcement past us on Twitter.

Kim K Book Club

Kim K Book Club

The short, simple tweet said that Kardashian is starting a book club with her hair stylist Jen Atkin and Twitter queen Chrissy Teigen. Then Teigen confirmed it by retweeting Kardashian's announcement. And then my mind exploded because I can't even begin to imagine the sheer entertainment value of a Kim K and Chrissy Teigen book club.

More: 10 Times Chrissy Teigen's Hilarious Tweets Helped Fuel a Revolution

Honestly, a book club is great enough on its own. It took me 32 years on this sweet Earth to start a book club, and now I don't know how I ever lived without it. Challenging literature, thought-provoking discussions, deep examinations of prose and plot and story — it's utter bliss!

And then there's all the stuff we talk about for the other 80 percent of the time. Marriages and divorces, potty training and Tinder dates, world politics and celebrity gossip. Book club is the best part of my month.

Book club is the best part of everyone's month.

But a book club with Kim K and Chrissy Teigen? It's too much. I can't. Someone's making this into a reality show, right?

Here's how it's (probably) (definitely) going to go down.

The atmosphere

Teigen hosts. She hosts because she's the one making the food. Kardashian arrives with North and Saint in tow because Kanye West's MIA and her nanny canceled last minute (celebrities, they're just like us!).

Luna crawls over to greet North, who opens a trunk of sample pieces from her new clothing line and begins styling Luna. Saint sits in the corner and chews on a lamp.

John Legend takes his place at the piano and plays some soothing background music as the two begin to discuss the book. Jen Atkin braids their hair as they talk.

The book

Kim K Book Club 2

Kim K Book Club 2

Kardashian said that the first book they'll be reading is Embraced By the Light, the plot of which is described by Google Books thusly: "At the age of 31, Betty Eadie died in hospital after undergoing surgery. The events that followed have been called the most profound near-death experience ever."

Which brings us to...

The crying

This book sounds sad as fuck. So I imagine that for a few moments, the two will just cry.

Legend will adjust his piano playing accordingly, obvs.

The food

Teigen has laid out a spread of food from her Cravings cookbook: spicy clams and pasta, butternut squash soup with prosciutto crisps and a wealth of other delicious offerings.

Teigen digs in while Kardashian takes a tiny bit of each dish and nervously adjusts her waist trainer.

The drinking and the dishing

Having talked about the book for a good 15 minutes, it's now time for these women to get down to the good stuff. Kardashian tells the KUWTK cameras to stop filming, the two recline and get progressively tipsier as they chat.

Teigen talks about how much she loves her post-baby body and how much support she's received for embracing her stretch marks.

Kardashian nods kindly, says that you can hardly see them and then shares the name of the surgeon she used to remove hers. "You know, if you ever get tired of them, I mean."

They gossip about Bey's pregnancy and who knew first and how OMG twins, twins, damn that's terrifying. Like seriously, terrifying.

The Dancing

After a few drinks, Teigen is tired of sitting. She shrieks at Legend to give her something to dance to goddamn it and he starts pounding out the chords to "Start A Fire" from the soundtrack of the multiple award-winning film La La Land, and Teigen starts breaking it down.

Chrissy Teigen Dancing
Image: Giphy

By now, Kardashian is drunk. Gloriously, incredibly drunk.

Kim K Drinking

Image: Giphy

Jen Atkin refills her glass and Kardashian starts chuckling at the absurdity of life. The utter beauty and futility of it all. What does it all mean? None of it makes sense, and that's OK!

Kardashian laughs harder and harder and Teigen dances ever more wildly and Luna is the steeziest toddler ever and Saint is asleep in the corner and John Legend is just so happy that for once this song is being appreciated without goddamn Ryan Gosling upstaging him and fuck this book club is so fucking awesome, it's breaking my heart that I can't be a part of it.

Or can I?
