Hillary Clinton Is Writing a Book of Personal Essays

0
0

In case you were wondering what it was like to walk through one of the most difficult-to-watch presidential races ever, wonder no more. Hillary Clinton is writing a book about it. Simon & Schuster announced today that Clinton is writing a book of personal essays inspired by the “hundreds of quotations she has been collecting for decades.” She’ll use these quotes as “jumping-off points” to tell her life stories.

“These are the words I live by,” Clinton said. “These quotes have helped me celebrate the good times, laugh at the absurd times, persevere during the hard times and deepen my appreciation of all life has to offer.” Important question: Is “Love trumps hate” one of the quotes? How about Bette Davis’ zinger, “When a man gives his opinion, he's a man. When a woman gives her opinion, she's a bitch.” Or, perhaps, the topical words of Gwen Stefani, “This shit is bananas, B-A-N-A-N-A-S.”

In any event, Clinton said that she hopes the quotes and her reflections on them will have some sense of import for those who read her work. “I hope by sharing these words and my thoughts about them, the essays will be meaningful for readers,” she said. You’ll have to wait a while — the book hasn’t even been named yet, and it’s set to launch in the fall of 2017. But we’re sure it’ll be a hit.

This is not the first time Clinton has published a book. She also has It Takes a Village (1996); Dear Socks, Dear Buddy (1998); An Invitation to the White House (2000); Living History (2003); and Hard Choices (2014). So if you’re having trouble waiting a year and a half for the new collection, try one of these fine tomes.

Physical Activity Could Help Prevent Depression in Kids

0
0

As someone who suffers from depression, I worry about passing it on to my kids. It's something I've felt fairly helpless about given that genetics play a role. But a new study published in the journal Pediatrics suggests that encouraging kids to exercise could help beat back the blues.

More: My spouse is depressed and I can't let that affect our kids

Researchers from the Norwegian University of Science and Technology and NTNU Social Research found that children who engage in moderate to vigorous physical activity (activity that gets kids sweaty and out of breath) are less likely to develop depression. That's huge news because although adults have been told for a long time that exercise helps mood, this is one of the first studies showing that there might be the same effect in kids.

The study tracked the physical activity and depressive symptoms of 700 children starting at the age of 6 and then again at 8 and 10. They found that kids who were more active at 6 and 8 were less likely to have symptoms of depression two years later. Said study author Silje Steinsbekk, "This is important to know, because it may suggest that physical activity can be used to prevent and treat depression already in childhood." Though the effect of exercise on depression is small, researchers noted that it was similar to the effect of "psychosocial intervention programs" like therapy, which is pretty amazing.

More: Suns, houses and scary people: What kids' drawings really mean

More study needs to be done before we can figure out why exercise might help prevent depression in kids — whether, as researchers theorized, it's the distraction of physical activity or the self-esteem and social inclusion that come with participation in team sports, for example. But regardless of the why, encouraging our kids to be more physically active has very little downside that we can see. It reduces screen time, it prevents obesity, and now, it may help prevent them from developing depression. If you have a kid who already loves sports, you're in luck. As for the rest of us, it looks like it's time to strap on some sneakers and drag those kids outside.

Never Wait in Line at a Restaurant Again Thanks to Google Maps

When hunger strikes and you don't have groceries or a dinner reservation, the last thing you want to do is call or drive around hitting up every local restaurant hoping for a free table — because frankly, that's a recipe for hanger-induced stress and bickering (I speak from experience). The easy new solution: Google Maps' latest update, which shows how busy restaurants are in real time, kinda like it does with traffic.

More: Can Breathalyzer-Enabled Bags of Chips Save Lives on Super Bowl Sunday?

Google Maps Update
Image: Google

For a while Google Maps has had a feature called Popular Times, which tells you when certain restaurants are generally busy, but the live update (pictured above), uses data from users currently at the restaurant. To help you make the most educated decision about where to eat, the update also lets you see the average amount of time people are spending at the restaurant along with average wait times.

Sure, it's slightly creepy how Google basically knows where we are and what we're doing at all times, but since by now we're pretty used to apps mining every bit of data about us, it's not super-shocking — and at least it's being put to good use here.

Tamron Hall Doesn't Want NBC's Money if She Isn't Their Priority

0
0

Big things are happening over at NBC, and more precisely the Today show, leaving the future of the network a bit fuzzier than expected. Tamron Hall will be leaving NBC and MSNBC once her contract is finished at the end of February 2017. While there was no explicit mention that Hall was leaving because of Megyn Kelly's impending arrival to the Today show, the timing is suspect, and from the way People magazine reports it, no amount of money could sway Hall's opinion to stay. Is Kelly really to blame or was it time for Hall to move on to bigger and better things?

More: Rumor has it that Kelly Ripa will have some big on-air competition this summer

Hall will be leaving NBC and MSNBC after more than 10 years with the networks. In a recently released statement to The Hollywood Reporter Hall stated, "The last 10 years have been beyond anything I could have imagined, and I’m grateful. I’m also very excited about the next chapter. To all my great colleagues, I will miss you and I will be rooting for you." Hall's effervescent demeanor in her statement makes it sound like she wishes nothing but the best for her colleagues — old and new — but the timing of her departure is, as previously mentioned, rather intriguing.

Tamron Mary Tyler Moore

Tamron Mary Tyler Moore

Hall's departure comes right as Kelly plans to make her big leap from Fox News to NBC. Kelly will be taking over one hour of Today's four-hour morning block, although it is still unknown if it will be the 9 a.m. or 10 a.m. slot. Regardless of which hour she chooses, it's been confirmed Al Roker & Tamron Hall will get bumped to make room for Kelly. It is possible to make an educated guess that Hall's departure acts as confirmation Kelly will be taking the hour previously occupied by Hall and co-host Al Roker. Only time will tell.

More: Megyn Kelly may get Days of our Lives canceled

The development is noteworthy for a few reasons. The first is that, as People reported, Hall was offered a multiyear, multimillion dollar contract NBC contract. That's major. If, after a decade of relationship-building between employer and employee, Hall could not be persuaded to stay, that implies to me that there's a bigger brouhaha we're not hearing about. Would Hall have had to forgo certain roles to make room for Kelly? Was the network disrespecting Hall's seniority within the Today show hierarchy?

More: Al Roker Gets Bumped to Make Room for Megyn Kelly

Granted, this is speculative, but the fact remains the same: Hall's unexpected departure is major. While Hall hasn't updated us with details on her next professional venture (and goodness knows my curiosity is piqued), this NBC exit could belie bigger problems in the network's attempt to make room for Kelly.

Do you think NBC made a mistake bumping Hall for Megyn Kelly? Let us know in the comments below.

5 Things Jason Momoa Needs More Than These 'Bodyguards'

0

Jason Momoa appeared on Jimmy Kimmel recently, but photos of him walking to the studio are garnering far more attention than the interview he gave inside of it.

Mostly because of this picture right here:

Jason Momoa Tiny Bodyguards

Jason Momoa Tiny Bodyguards

What you're looking at is burly man-god Momoa walking to set flanked by not one but two bodyguards.

More: GoT's Khal Drogo is Back From the Dead, Just on Another Show

Now, it's not particularly rare for celebs to travel with protection, but Khal Drogo?? Does Khal Drogo really need bodyguards? And if he did, um, shouldn't they be bigger than he is? I mean, who is going to plan to attack Jason Momoa and then think better of it because of these dudes?

Don't get me wrong! These men look incredibly helpful and they would probably do a great job guarding many different bodies. If I was by myself in a dark alley I'd want them escorting me home safely.

But I'm not 6'4" and 230 lbs. I don't have arms the size of tree-trunks and size 14 feet. I don't have a badass forearm tattoo and an incredibly masculine mane of chestnut hair that looks ten times better than my own hair does on the best of days.

In short, there are about a million things Jason Momoa needs far more than he needs these ridiculous (though well-intentioned) bodyguards.

Here are five of them:

1. His Khaleesi Back

Khal Drogo

Image: Giphy

You knew this was coming.

Look, I know that in real life Momoa is married to the indomitable Lisa Bonet and they have two children together and by all accounts seem perfectly happy.

I am also fully aware that Khal Drogo and Daenerys were a fictional couple and thus do not exist in our current shitshow reality.

But, if we live in a world where Momoa needs two adorable little hobbits to escort him to set, it seems just as plausible that we can live in a world where a love like this is reignited IRL. It's as much for us as it is for him.

Please.

We need this.

2. Better Roles

Aquaman? Who the hell cares about Aquaman? When I first heard about Aquaman I got confused and thought it was Waterworld and was then genuinely disappointed when I realized was wrong. That's how few fucks I give about Aquaman.

I mean I'll watch Aquaman., I'll be first in line for Aquaman because Jason Momoa. But my point is that he needs better roles and more roles and did I talk about his hair already? Because he's the only one who has ever worn a man bun and made it look this good.

Jason Momoa Bun

Sorry, I got distracted. But more roles, better roles, more screen time. Everybody wins!

3. More Interviews

Hand in hand with more roles and better roles comes more interviews. Interviews like this one where he talks about living in the wild and owning a donkey and then shows Kimmel how to throw axes. Axes that he made with his own giant hands.

It doesn't even matter if you have the sound on, you can just watch him. Look how bashful he is when he first comes out.

Jason Momoa Kimmel

Jason Momoa Kimmel

Dude is a literal giant and he's so adorable and shy and it's like he doesn't even know how magnificent he is. But he is.

So magnificent.

 4. More Twitter Followers

As of today, Momoa only has 107,000 twitter followers.

Jason Momoa Twitter

Jason Momoa Twitter

This is not ok. Not just because this sumptuous man-beast posts incredible things like this and as a Canadian it is part of my official citizenship duties to appreciate anything hockey-related, but also because fast-food restaurant Arby's has 718,000 followers.

Arby's.

Arby's having more twitter followers than Jason Momoa is as ridiculous as Jason Momoa needing bodyguards. I won't stand for it.

More: These Are All The So-Called Rogue Government Twitter Accounts

5. Some Goddamn Recognition

Momoa's Instagram account is faring much better with 1.8m followers, and this makes me very happy.

I'm happy because, in addition to sharing glimpses of his deliciously wild life, Momoa uses this social media platform to advocate for initiatives he believes in and he deserves more recognition for throwing his considerable weight behind worthy causes.

Causes like the Dakota Access Pipeline.

Hard pass on Chris Brown's approach to passionate love

0

Chris Brown needs to learn what is and isn't appropriate behavior with women and STAT, especially because he's raising a daughter.

More: Chris Brown opens up for the first time about the Rihanna and no one cares

In a new video he posted to Instagram and then later removed, Brown referred to himself as a stalker who is going to make his exes "miserable."

What a standup guy.

Us Weekly caught the video before it was taken down and reported Brown as saying, "Ladies, y'all be complaining about n***as being, like, stalkers and in love with y'all, kinda crazy and shit and you get tired of it. Well, guess what? I'm one of them n***as! If I love you, bitch, ain't nobody gonna have you. I'm gonna make you miserable."

He added, "I'm going to chase that n---a out and I'm gonna chase yo ass around, and it's done."

More: Chris Brown continues campaign to become a total a-hole

Maybe he thought he was somehow being romantic (Then again, should we be giving Brown the benefit of the doubt?) about how he'll fall deep for a woman and then pursue her with abandon, but his wording is all wrong and not the message any man or woman should be disseminating. At all.

His video was especially worrisome given Brown's violent history with women like Rihanna and Karreuche Tran.

This foot-in-mouth moment comes right on the heels of another Brown faux pas in which he referred to Aziz Ansari as "Aladdin" after Ansari referred to Donald Trump as the Chris Brown of politics.

More: Aziz Ansari's comments on sexual harassment toward women are on point

Unfortunately for Brown, it seems he is continually just enforcing Ansari's point as of late. Brown seems to have just as much of a social media trigger finger as the president. And he's just as good at making women feel disrespected.

Ben Higgins Isn't Packing His Bags for Bachelor in Paradise Just Yet

If you watched Ben & Lauren: Happily Ever After then you know there was a lot of talk about if there would ever actually be a happily ever after for these two after they got engaged on The Bachelor.

More: Ben Higgins has a lot to say about his wedding plans — or lack thereof

Well that discussion is still ongoing, especially after Us Weekly spotted Lauren Bushnell without her ring and noted that she was going a lot of travel without her man.

The outlet also noted a source told them, "They don’t get along. She’s told people recently how hard it is. He’s a great guy, but they should split."

The source added that "a breakup has been coming for awhile."

More: Lauren Bushnell needs to move on from the Ben Higgins & JoJo Fletcher drama

Ben Higgins was quick to address the rumors with an Instagram post, assuring fans the two were still together and still planning a life together.

That "fake news" could be the quotes from the source or it could be the allusions to Bushnell ditching her engagement ring or it could be all of the above. But it's hard to not believe Us Weekly's article, especially after Ben & Lauren. The two fought like crazy and often seemed to be on two completely separate pages about some important, big life decisions. Namely, their wedding.

More: Ben Higgins' wedding stress showcases his not-so-eligible Bachelor side

On a November episode of their reality show, Higgins called off the wedding from Bushnell because of the couple's issues. He still wanted to be with her but didn't want to plan their walk down the aisle until the two had hammered out some personal details.

Since then, it seems the two haven't rescheduled a date meaning there's a reason rumors about their relationship status are constantly popping back up.

Do you think Bushnell and Higgins will make it to married coupledom?

Suits' Harvey Finally Got the Closure With His Mom He's Always Deserved

Harvey's estrangement from his mother is something he's been very open about. Ever since discovering at a young age that his mom, Lily, cheated multiple times on his father (who Harvey adored greatly) and then his mom asking Harvey to keep it a secret from his dad, the lawyer has faced many personal issues.

More: Suits' Mike just pulled a Dead Poets Society, & we totally need more

Well, not only did we once again get a glimpse into Harvey's past during Thursday's episode, but we also saw something that both viewers and Harvey probably thought would never happen. Harvey and his mom finally made peace.

The episode opened with Harvey seven years ago going back to Boston for his father's funeral. It was beyond heartbreaking for him, especially since he and his father were so close. Things became even more tense when Harvey came face-to-face with his mom at the funeral.

Firstly, he didn't want his mom speaking at the funeral and saying anything about his father. Though Harvey's brother Marcus helped him come to terms with it. Admittedly, Lily did give a touching speech, which focused on her ex-husband's love for his sons. It even caused Harvey to shed some tears.

It looked like things were going well and Harvey was about to make things right with his mom at the wake, but before that could happen, her partner Bobby, whom she cheated on Harvey's father with, showed up. Harvey was not happy and stormed out.

More: Suits Season 6 photos tease an unpredictable time for Specter Litt

This brings us back to the present day. During the Season 6 winter premiere, Donna told Harvey he needed to go make amends with his mom. After all these years, it was about time. For way too long, Harvey has let what Lily did eat him up inside, cause intense anger and affect his relationships.

Like Harvey usually does, he listened to Queen Donna and went to Boston. It took guts for Harvey to do what he did, and of course a reconciliation with Lily didn't come easily. They had a stressful dinner causing Harvey to yet again walk away from his mom.

At first, it didn't seem like Harvey and Lily would find any common ground, but after Bobby lit into Harvey and Marcus told his brother that enough is enough, Harvey realized it was time to make things right. As he told his mom, he doesn't hate her, but he does hate what she did. Lily did apologize and feels truly sorry for hurting Harvey so badly. So that's that and Harvey and Lily are once again in each other's lives.

It looks like Harvey can finally put all his mommy issues behind him and move in a positive direction both professionally and personally.

Harvey Specter
Image: Giphy

Getting that closure with Lily is something Harvey has deserved for a long time. We're sure there will still be times when Harvey finds himself surrounded by drama and gets angry, but establishing a relationship with his mom just might be the key to a happier Harvey.

Plus, now that the void seems to be filled, this could also mean a Harvey and Donna relationship is on the horizon. You can't be truly happy with someone until you are happy with yourself, and it sure seems like this is the direction Harvey is heading.

Between his mom and Jessica, Harvey is slowly healing, so here's hoping only good things are to come for him.

Samantha Bee Finds the Silver Lining in the Immigration Fiasco

0
0

There is always a silver lining, as we were thankfully reminded during tonight's episode of Full Frontal with Samantha Bee. Although much of this evening's episode revolved around the pain and suffering caused by the recent ban on refugees and travel from a select group of predominantly Muslim nations (and yes, President Trump did originally refer to it as ban, although he and his cohorts have since backtracked on that language), we also got to see some of the good that has been done in the aftermath of this fiasco.

More: Samantha Bee reminds us that President Obama wasn't perfect

Lawyers get a bad rap, but as Bee explained, several stepped up to the plate last weekend to help those impacted by the new immigration measures. These compassionate legal professionals offered their services free of charge and, in doing so, eased at least some of the horrible burden immigrants experienced.

ACLU Samantha Bee

Although Bee commended all of the lawyers who stepped up this week for their service, she highlighted one in particular: Lee Gelernt of the ACLU. In a fascinating interview with Gelernt, Bee learned of his tireless efforts to aid those impacted by the Trump administration's controversial executive order. He also commented on the broader implications of the debacle, and his insights were very interesting, albeit a bit depressing.

More: Samantha Bee is spot on with her Kellyanne Conway and Cersei Lannister comparison

For example, when Bee commented, "It feels like they've overstepped so far that when they step back, they're still way off the cliff," Gelernt explained that this has probably been their strategy all along. If so, it's certainly working — people are so focused on the immigration issue, they're not paying much attention to all of the other concerning executive measures proposed recently.

More: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee had the perfect tribute to Mary Tyler Moore

Trump has clearly demonstrated his intention to make good on his campaign promises, and now, many people are even more frightened than they were on November 9th. If there's one small source of comfort, however, it's that there really are wonderful people in this world, willing to do whatever it takes to help those in need. These are the stories that the public needs to hear, and we're glad that Bee is doing her part.

8 Ways to Deal With Your Dog’s Separation Anxiety

0
0

Separation anxiety can cause a constellation of confusing changes in your dog. Excessive vocalization, destructive behaviors, self-mutilation, aggression, extreme attachment to one person, pacing, urinating and defecting inappropriately and attempting to escape can all be seen in dogs with this type of anxiety. It’s important not to mistake medical problems with anxiety issues since the treatments are dramatically different.

Make sure you discuss any behavioral changes with your veterinarian so important medical clues aren’t missed before moving forward with treatment for separation anxiety.

Consider medications

Dogs that are experiencing anxiety can destroy their environments and even become a danger to their own safety. In addition, anxiety and stress compromise the immune system, predisposing these dogs to more health problems. Medications can help significantly, but it’s important to realize a few very important points about their use for behavioral problems.

First, once your dog’s anxiety has progressed to the point that it’s noticeable, it’s highly unlikely that the mild sedation provided by something like Benadryl, an over-the-counter human antihistamine, is going to sufficiently treat it. Secondly, using medications that you may have on hand for your own anxiety is especially dangerous since animals metabolize drugs differently than we do and dosages vary widely.

Anxiety can be a significant threat to your dog’s health, as well as to your relationship with him. Consult your veterinarian, who can advise you on the use of behavioral medications, and prescribe those that will be effective.

More: 15 toxic foods for dogs every owner should know

Realize that a pill won’t fix everything

Behavioral and anti-anxiety drugs have revolutionized the treatment of anxiety in animals. But they almost never work alone. The pet parent must be committed to a program of behavior modification, as well as making changes to the way the dog is managed.

What types of behavior modifications are effective? The specific answer depends on the specific situation, however one thing to consider is changing the way your dog is confined in your absence. Since many of these dogs have confinement frustration, if your dog has typically been confined to a crate, consider instead confining him to a larger, but still small, area of the house or enrolling him in a doggie day care program.

Use tough love

As mentioned above, the development of serious anxiety issues in many of these dogs is preceded by an excessive attachment to one person. That person should be sure to adopt a policy of aloofness when returning home, and not praise or pet the dog excessively, especially if the dog is going wild with joy. Reserve attention for when he’s calmed down, and he’ll start to get the message that your attention comes once he’s settled, and not before.

Consider using pheromones

Mother dogs secrete a substance that tells their offspring to relax and that everything is going to be fine. This substance has been synthesized and is sold in the form of collars that can be worn and diffusers that can be plugged into outlets in the home. Their effect is subtle, but many people do believe that they provide quite a bit of calming to anxious dogs and are especially effective when used with a program of behavior modification and management. Adaptil makes both collars and diffusers with dog-appeasing pheromones.

More: Why your dogs chews its paws and how to stop it

Keep him busy

Food toys are a great way to keep your dog busy and focused on something other than the fact that you’re not around when you’re not around. Toys like Kongs can be loaded with a delicious concoction of plain yogurt, a bit of honey and kibble, then frozen to create a treat-sicle that will keep your dog occupied for some time. Toys like Buster Cubes are great for encouraging interactive play and alone time. Some dogs enjoy having the TV or radio on while they’re alone.

Look in the mirror

It’s not that you’ve necessarily done anything to cause your dog’s anxiety issues, but now that he has them, you need to examine what behaviors you do that trigger them. If you notice that your dog becomes anxious when you get your keys out in preparation for leaving the house, hide this from him. Pair your departure with good things, like getting a high-value food reward (boiled chicken) or the presentation of the aforementioned treat-sicle. Make sure to discontinue any punishment you’ve been doling out for his actions, and start rewarding him when he’s relaxed.

Follow up with your veterinarian

Once you’re starting to see improvement, make sure to follow up with your veterinarian on your dog’s medications and progress toward improvement. Many times, medications can be discontinued or significantly decreased, once the behavior modification and management changes have begun to work.

You've Confirmed Your Partner Is Cheating — Now What?

0
0

After being tortured by suspicion, your worst nightmare has finally been realized. You now have cold, hard proof your partner has been cheating on you with another person.

So does it mean relationships are ruined for you forever? Will this horrible devastation ever end? Yes, there's been some major damage done, but — believe it or not — there are productive, healthy things you can do to move past the pain inflicted. Your current relationship might even still be salvageable — if that's what you want.

More: What you really think about when your spouse cheats

Here are seven steps to take when you find out you've been cheated on.

1. Decide whether you want to stay or not, and whether your relationship is worth saving

This will take some time after you've processed what happened. One way to figure out whether you should stay together and fight for your love is to be honest about the type partner they are and the sort of betrayal involved. If they're not the kind of person who strays and it seems like it was a one-shot deal, you should try giving them another chance. Ditto if they confess the affair or at least apologize profusely and seem genuinely remorseful once you find out about it.

"Slip-ups happen, but the good news is that when they truly are slip-ups, they're survivable," William July, the author of Confessions of an Ex Bachelor, tells Cosmo.

But if it has happened before, this was more than just a one-time thing (i.e., it was an actual full-blown affair or romantic relationship with someone else), it happened with their ex, or they don't seem the least bit sorry, think long and hard before choosing to stick it out.

2. Talk it out

"If you decide that you do want to work things out with your guy, you’re going to need to really talk about what happened and why," licensed sex psychotherapist Vanessa Marin tells Bustle. "What was he feeling ... and how did he feel after it happened? I know this step might feel excruciatingly painful, but it’s important for you to hear him out."

Likewise, your partner needs to hear what you have to say when it comes to your feelings about their infidelity, she says. "He has to understand how his actions hurt you, and has to be willing to give your emotions some time and space."

3. Take a break from each other

This might seem like it could do more harm than good, but even a short break from all contact with your partner after they've been unfaithful can help you regroup and guide you on where to go from here. Without the distraction and hurt that comes with talking to them, especially right after you find out about the cheating, you can begin working through it all with a clearer head.

4. Go to couples counseling

Sometimes, the only way to communicate effectively about something as painful as cheating is to get an objective, and professional, third party involved. Otherwise, the discussion could escalate into a terrible fight where nothing is resolved and damaging things are said. With someone else in the room, couples dealing with infidelity — or any other relationship woes — often have more success in "fighting fairly" and communicating in a healthy way about what happened and how to fix things.

More: My partner thought he hadn't cheated because they hadn't had sex

5. Get to the root of the problem

Through weeks and months of intense discussions and therapy sessions, where you are really, truly listening to each other about how each of you is feeling along the way, you should be able to get to the bottom of why they cheated. Maybe they were angry with you about something else and didn't know how to express themselves, so they acted out instead. Maybe your relationship was on the brink of getting more serious and they got scared — and the cheating was actually a sign that they saw themselves with you forever. Not only do you need to figure out why the cheating happened but what led to it in the first place and how you both may have contributed. Once you get to the heart of the matter — and neither of you may ever fully grasp all the reasons — you can start to work toward doing what it takes to avoid it in the future.

6. Forgive, let it go and move on

Embrace an improved, renewed relationship that's more fulfilling, profound and honest than ever before. "You can either handle being vulnerable with your partner again or you can't," says Dr. Phil on his website. "If you can't, you need to get out of this relationship and move on. And if you can, then you need to let him/her earn the trust back and start putting this relationship together again. Forgiveness is a choice."

Chances are, after both you and your partner have done the difficult work of repairing your relationship, you'll come away with a much better understanding of each other and a significantly deeper connection and commitment to each other. That, in turn, will strengthen your love and bring you closer together.

7. If you can't get past the affair, even after months of hard work, break it off

It's just not worth any more of your time and heartache, so you might as well start the painful process of ending your relationship now.

"Ask yourself if this is going to be a life sentence for your partner," Dr. Phil advises. "Can you heal from this and forgive? If not, don't continue to live in anger and/or be with someone who causes you pain."

Matthew McConaughey Misguidedly Believes Hollywood Must Embrace Trump

0
0

Have I finally reached the age when all my childhood crushes start betraying me based on their political views? Because it kinda feels like that, especially with Matthew McConaughey asking Hollywood to embrace President Trump. Yeah, that's a thing that's happened in the past 24 hours.

More: Matthew McConaughey sees no problem with racist Redskins logo

McConaughey's comments were part of an interview done for his movie Gold on Channel FI in the U.K. The interview aired Sunday, Jan. 29 in the U.K. during the rather tumultuous weekend with fallout from Trump's immigration ban. It's unclear when the interview was recorded (if it was done around the time of the immigration ban, curiosity causes me to wonder if McConaughey's statement would be the same), but the message is clear: Trump is our president. We gotta get over it.

McConaughey Trump

McConaughey Trump

During the interview, McConaughey was asked whether he felt it was time that "Hollywood and the cultural elite gave this guy a break." Yeah, my blood pressure is kind of rising too. That question is misguided in itself: phrasing like "cultural elite" implies that one certain group of people or kind of person is inclined to dislike Trump, a thing we know is not true. Trump's policies have affected and instilled a fear in a great many people's hearts and minds, not just the "cultural elite." But I digress.

McConaughey's reply was jarring, to say the least. "Well, they don't have a choice now, he's our president." But wait. Before you sigh so hard you faint, you should at least hear the man out. Surely it can't get worse, right?

More: Matthew McConaughey's Dazed and Confused audition proves one important thing (that he was SMOKING hot)

Wrong. "[I]t’s time for us to embrace, shake hands with this fact, and be constructive with him over the next four years. So, even those who most strongly may disagree with his principles or things he’s said and done — which is another thing, we’ll see what he does compared to what he had said — no matter how much you even disagreed along the way, it’s time to think about how constructive can you be. Because he’s our president for the next four years. At least." Why are you intent on hurting me, McConaughey? Do you think this is a game? Do you?

Listen, I get the whole "Let's come together in unity" argument that's been floating around since Trump was elected. I may not wholeheartedly agree with it, but I understand the merit of it. However, a few things are shocking about McConaughey's statement. The first: Is McConaughey really doing this right now? The man whose cultivated a celebrity persona as a laid-back and loving, deep-thinking bro with a heart of gold? Yeah, that's going to take a minute to sink in.

More: Matthew McConaughey already has his eye on the prize

It's also very interesting that an older white heterosexual man is coming forward with this viewpoint. I mean, McConaughey's not alone: Mark Wahlberg told us to accept Trump's win weeks ago (don't get me started). Both men come from great positions of power and they give off more traditional, all-American vibes in their interviews. On the surface, they would fall into the perceived Trump demographic. While they're not on record explicitly endorsing him, these kinds of comments to embrace Trump, accept his win and quit griping can give the wrong impression.

McConaughey Aah
Image: Giphy

Frankly, it's misguided on McConaughey's part to say this. As good-natured a man as he is, the fact that he would ask Hollywood to embrace him — an industry that is so ideologically opposed to and vocal about their dislike of Trump — is kind of like slapping someone in the face with a brick. It hurts, it's mean and why the heck would you do it when you know it's hurtful, dude? To ask for Hollywood to unite and, by extension, ask America to unite under Trump when he is acting so fundamentally in opposition to the office of president right now is a gobsmacking statement.

McConaughey has every right to voice his opinions, and luckily, they're not the most extreme things he could have said. However, there's no doubt in my mind the shine has dulled a bit on McConaughey for these comments.

There's a Lady Gaga & Rent Mashup and It's as Amazing as It Sounds

During a time when we have few things to get excited about, the geniuses behind the viral #HAM4BEY video — featuring a mashup of the Hamilton musical soundtrack and the back catalog of Queen Bey — have done it again. This time, they’ve brought together the musical stylings of upcoming Super Bowl performer Lady Gaga and every ‘90s kid’s favorite musical Rent for the show’s 20th anniversary in #GAGA4RENT.

The video was created by YouTuber Michael Korte with additional arrangements by Jared Jenkins. Featuring vocalists Jeniffer Criss, Cameron Wright, Danielle Withers, Eric Lyn, Matt Bloyd, Christine Noel and Trevon Davis.

Korte said that the response to #HAM4BEY was "humbling and wildly surprising," but the success really put the pressure on for the follow-up.

"#HAM4BEY was always meant to be No. 1 in a series," Korte told SheKnows." There are many further 'mashes' planned, but my love for Rent catapulted this one to the front of the line! I think (perhaps) we're also a little intimidated to take on the other giant we plan on slaying."

More: 20 Best Moments from Coldplay, Beyoncé & Bruno Mars' Super Bowl Halftime Show

While it took months to prepare and shoot #HAM4BEY, Korte knew that the Gaga/Rent tribute would have to be put together in about one-quarter of the time.

"Myself and my partner/arranger Jared haven't slept much since December!" Korte said. "I also fund this independently by working at a pizza restaurant. But it's so damn worth all the sacrifice!"

So what’s next for Korte and his group of amazingly talented musicians? He’s working on the Season 3 premiere of his YouTube series City of Michael, and will soon start rehearsals for the next mashup.

"I think people will be a little shocked with what we have planned next," Korte added.

He also said that he’d love to find a way to start performing these arrangements live.

"I'm proud to provide a spotlight to incredibly talented, good-hearted people who don't represent everyone else that we see when we turn on the TV/movies," Korte said. "This is how I will get through the next four years... creating, pushing boundaries, celebrating diversity and holding tight to my joy."

23 Love Coupons — Because Cheesy Gifts Are the Best Gifts

When you hear the word "coupon," your mind doesn't usually race with sexy thoughts — but we promise that love coupons can be much more naughty than clipping discounts out of the Sunday paper.

Love coupons are an inexpensive way to add some fun into your relationship — and although you're giving them as a gift, you can totally finagle the coupons in your favor. I mean, a coupon for a hot night at a hotel with your partner kinda seems like a win for everyone.

And your coupons don't have to be sexual. Maybe your partner has been wanting a massage, or a spa day. Boom, love coupon. There are million different directions you can take them. Here are some examples.

More: 20 sext messages no one is disappointed to receive

Now, here are a few tips on how to make them and how to give them to your partner:

You can make your own coupon book by printing the templates right from this page. If you want to create the coupons from scratch, grab some red or pink cardstock sheets, scissors, a hole punch, glue stick and ribbon. Write your offers on the cardstock and cut them out. Decorate them with ribbons!

You don't have to give your lover all of the coupons at once. Tear them out, one by one, and hide them in various places. You could put one under the pillow. You could sneak one in his/her briefcase. Slip one inside of the book that he/she is reading. You can fill a Christmas stocking up with a handful of coupons.

Be sure to create coupons of things that you'll enjoy doing yourself. After all, they are promises from you to your lover. If you really don't want to do them, you might end up letting him/her down. The idea is to create coupons for activities that you will both enjoy.

More: My first love is a groomsman in my wedding because life is funny like that

Whenever he/she wants to redeem one of the coupons, be sure to keep your promise! If the coupon is for a romantic picnic, don't make any other plans for that afternoon. If it's for being a sex slave for a day, don't try to get out of it. Love coupons are a way for the two of you to get out of the norm and try some fun, exciting things. However, you must be serious about them. Don't try to get out of doing any of them.

Married at First Sight’s Jamie Otis and Doug Hehner Are Expecting Again After Loss

Look, not everybody’s baby news will break the internet like Beyoncé’s did yesterday (most liked picture in the history of Instagram…not bad, Bey).

There’s another pregnancy announcement this week that made us feel, well, all the feels. Just in a different way. Some couples you can’t help but root for — especially when they’ve gone through a loss like Jamie Otis and Doug Hehner of Married at First Sight.

More: Jamie Otis struggles with big insecurity in her marriage

In July, the couple revealed on Instagram in several posts that Otis had suffered a miscarriage.

Jamie Otis insta

She wrote: “Not a day goes by that I don't wake up thinking of you, Baby Hehner. I know I have to get back to 'normal life' but I just don't know how to.” And everyone’s heart pretty much broke.

Otis also posted: "Today daddy and I are going to pick out a perfect name for you. We love you so much. I hope you're bouncing on clouds and feeling loved all the way up in heaven.” They named their first child Johnathan, and Otis vowed to keep blogging about the pain and the stigma of miscarriage — which disturbed many fans when she also shared a crushing photo of her and her husband holding their deceased son. We know. Heavy stuff, OK? We know.

But we respect Otis' refusal to stop talking because it makes some people uncomfortable: “I want to say sorry if this offends you. However, if there's one thing my husband has taught me it's this: 'Don't live life trying NOT to offend anyone and trying to please everyone.' I hope... you'll realize that he's a harmless, helpless baby who deserves to be remembered, not hidden away because his image may offend someone...Unfortunately, 1 in 4 women are affected by this. Yet, no one talks about it. I hope this can change. I'll be the first in my circle. You be the first in yours. My prayers go out to everyone who has lost their sweet baby too early.”

Luckily, there’s excellent news for the couple, who just posted a photo packed with cute:

“We are PREGNANT!!! Our sweet Baby Hehner is due this August,” Otis wrote. "PS forgive me for my unbuttoned jeans. I'm at that awkward stage where I don't quite fill out maternity jeans but I definitely don't fit in my regular clothes."

Jamie, you’ve got nothing to apologize for in our book. (You look fabulous, by the way.)

I Don’t Love My Body Every Day — Here’s Why That’s OK

0
0

Self-love is inarguably important.

Teaching confidence, especially to growing girls, is crucial, and encouraging and helping women to arm themselves with assurance helps them to stay afloat in a sea of Photoshop and Botox and weight loss trends. We know beauty standards are impossible, magazine images unrealistic and celebrity bodies largely unattainable, so it’s fitting — and remarkable — that the latest body-related craze isn’t about getting thin, but about getting happy.

More: Writer Posts Nude Selfie to Send Powerful Body-Positive Message

The “body positivity” movement, which first began to take hold across social media platforms, is based on the idea of an inclusive, powerful mentality by which we celebrate and appreciate the beauty of every body. Body positivity reminds us we have only one body, and that it’s worth loving instead of fighting with, that we can all wear and be photographed and feel great in anything we so desire and that each and every one of us, no matter the number we see on the scale or the shape we see in the mirror, should be comfortable in our own skin.

It’s an extraordinary movement that combats shaming and self-hate, promotes only positive body-talk and has contributed to the creation of some kinder, more inclusive and accepting communities on the often cruel internet. At its best and most effective, the concept of “body positivity” is shaping the way we talk with and about each other and the way we perceive our bodies and engage with other people’s.

More: The Women Leading the Charge in the Body-Positive Movement

When I first became aware of the idea of body positivity, I felt left out. Despite the movement’s inclusive mission, I felt like there wasn’t any room for me, someone who tends toward being self-conscious about her physical appearance. When I first saw body-positivity icon Lena Dunham stand naked on Girls, I didn’t feel liberated. I felt isolated. Her nudity felt like an accusation to me — like it somehow meant I, who wouldn’t stand naked on TV for anything in the world, wasn’t quite feminist enough.

I have long struggled with the fact that I am an ardent feminist and also have a somewhat fraught relationship with my body. I, of course, believe in my very core that we are so much more than our appearances and that we can’t and shouldn’t try to hold ourselves to standards we know are unrealistic. At the same time that I preach and believe in self-love, I try on pants and suck in a stomach that I’ve been forever frustrated by.

More: Artist's Adult Coloring Book Celebrates Body Positivity

I struggle to reconcile the part of me that doesn’t always like how I look with the part of me that believes in myself and in all women. When I look in the mirror, I feel like a fair-weather feminist. When I’m feeling down about not fitting into a dress I want or about an extra pound or two, I then also feel guilty for buying into a system that makes us evaluate ourselves so harshly.

I’ve realized that the part of body positivity that I grapple with the most is how hard it is to really, truly love yourself. I suppose there are people who truly love their bodies every day, and I envy them, but I’m not there yet. Instead of feeling excluded from a movement because “love” feels like a lofty goal, I’ve decided to work on “positivity” in a way that feels more accessible to me.

I’m starting with appreciation.

I have a body that works. It has carried me across rolling hills in Ireland and through thick mud in Tanzania. It has been strong and reliable and it is mine.

I still feel at odds with parts of me — a stomach that makes me angry and legs that make the perfect pair of jeans even more elusive, to name a few — but when I release myself from the idea that I’m supposed to “love” it all always, I am able to appreciate other things for which I am eternally grateful.

Right now, I don’t love my body every day, but I’m working on it, starting with embracing instead of feeling alienated by a movement that asks me to be thankful for and less judgmental of myself. After all, we all have to start somewhere.

Let's Weigh the Pros and Cons of Mandatory School Uniforms

0
0

On the surface, it seems like the great school uniform debate shouldn't be that controversial of a subject. We're only talking about clothes, here, after all. However, uniforms are actually an extremely polarizing topic and have led to many a heated argument among the parents of school-aged children.

It all comes down for what's best for the children, but should kids really be required to wear a uniform to school every day? We've broken down both sides of this decades-old debate.

More: The braid ideas for little girls every mom needs to save

Pros of school uniforms

  • Students experience less pressure in deciding what to wear each morning.
  • Uniforms cost less overall.
  • Student attendance improves.
  • Encourages discipline.
  • Students takes less time to get ready in the morning.
  • Children are free to concentrate on lessons.
  • Uniformity promotes a reduction of violence in schools.
  • A decrease in peer pressure to wear trendier brands.
  • Uniforms can be reused and recycled.
  • School intruders are more easily identified in a school of uniformed children.

More: These parents are calling out the 'sham' of perfect parenthood with photos of their kids

Former President Clinton is perhaps the most famous and influential advocate of school uniform.

"If it means that the schoolrooms will be more orderly and more disciplined, and that our young people will learn to evaluate themselves by what they are on the inside instead of what they're wearing on the outside, then our public schools should be able to require their students to wear uniforms," he said in a March 1996 speech.

Next Up: Cons of school uniforms

Originally published July 2009. Updated January 2017.

{pageBreak}

Cons of school uniforms

  • Uniforms detract from a child's individuality.
  • Students will always find ways to express themselves, leading to less desirable forms of expression such as tattooing and piercing.
  • Schools should be a place where diversity is celebrated.
  • The cost of uniforms is prohibitive, especially when a family includes more than one school-aged child.
  • An unfair additional cost to tax-payers sending their children to a public school.
  • A financial burden to lower income families.
  • A child in a uniform may be the target of bullies from a different school.
  • Uniforms may lessen the child's comfort level while attending school.
  • Enforcing rules about uniforms is difficult.

More: 50 trips all kids should take before graduating from high school

According to the most recent data from the National Center for Education Statistics:
  • 19 percent of schools across the United States require a uniform.
  • Fewer secondary schools require uniforms compared to elementary schools, at 12 percent versus 20 percent.
  • Up to 47 percent of high-poverty public schools require uniforms as a security measure.
  • Only 6 percent of low-poverty public schools require uniforms.

What parents say

Now that we have heard the arguments on both sides, what do moms really think about this debate? SheKnows interviewed three moms on opposite sides of the debate. Here's what they said:

Toinette Campbell, mom of two boys from Burbank, California: "Uniforms? I love them. The key word being uniform. It gives kids a level playing field and gets them away from one-upmanship on designer labels. It also gets kids used to taking care of their clothes. Getting rid of status symbols prevents children from being teased because they aren't wearing $150 jeans."

More: I was afraid to drink in front of my stepkid, but I shouldn't have been

Carol O'Neil, mother of two boys from East Kilbride, Scotland: "I am totally for school uniforms as they keep children dressed the same and stop all of the nonsense with kids wearing designer gear. If kids are dressed the same, then they are less likely to be bullied." (In the UK, uniforms are compulsory in both state and private schools.)

Eduarda Schroeder, mom of two daughters from Chandler, Arizona: "Uniforms can be a financial burden for poor families because they are an additional expense for parents who pay taxes for a free public education. I am more in favor of a dress code."

As time continues on, it looks as if the line still stays down the middle in regard to school uniforms. However, while moms may have varying opinions on the issue, 95 percent of teachers believe that school uniforms promote a positive learning environment and improved behavior in students.

Where do you stand in the school uniform debate?

Does Beyoncé's Pregnancy Photo Include Secret Hidden Messages? Spoiler: Yes

0

Everybody knows that yesterday was a big day in the life cycle of planet Earth, with Beyoncé and Jay Z announcing that twins are on the way. (Insert sound of choir of angels and visual of knocked-up backup dancers.)

The image — posted by Bey herself to Instagram — zipped to the top-liked photo of all time on the social media platform. (Sorry, Selena Gomez, whose smoldering Coke bottle photo dropped to second. Wah.)

More: Beyoncé breaks the internet with her massive twins announcement

Dat photo tho. Um, can we just talk about it? Like we’re in art history class and we’re trying to figure out why Vermeer added the skull behind the cat and why the candle is only dripping on one side?

We tried not to overthink it, Beyoncé.

But we can't help ourselves. We are mere mortals, after all, full of questions and speculation and tweets. And we saw what you did there with Lemonade, OK? That thing was packed. Our weak minds are still reeling.

If you haven’t seen it (and why haven't you??), this photo features a serene and vaguely pissed-off Beyoncé kneeling totally casually in front of a massive, Volkswagen-size floral arrangement wearing — gasp — mismatched lingerie. Oh, and a super-bizarre green veil thingy. Could it be… all… signs?

Hell yes. You know Beyoncé didn’t just wake up in that ensemble and trip in front of some poorly chosen funeral flowers. The panties and the bra didn’t match, people. THEY DID NOT MATCH. That is not the normal way of the Bey.

Closer examination reveals a wee pink bow on her embroidered burgundy tulle Agent Provocateur bra — oh suuuuuuuuuure that means nothing, nothing at all — and baby-blue Dauphine panties by Liviara (see the lengths we go for you? Now you too can dress like Beyoncé’s twins announcement for Halloween).

More: Dang, Bey, Lemonade is breaking our brains

If that pink bow and those baby-blue bottoms don’t mean a girl and a boy for the Carters, we’d be mighty surprised. Want to bet us a pizza? Or, you know, an oversized floral arrangement?

And no, no, we have no idea what the green veil signifies either. Smog? Global warming? Paranormal ectoplasm? Or emerging fashion trend?
