Anthony Michael Hall Sued by His Neighbor for Assault & Battery

Update: Jan. 31, 2017, 11:45 a.m. PT: Anthony Michael Hall has been sued by his neighbor, Richard Samson, following their alleged brawl late last year.

Page Six reports that Samson has filed papers in court accusing Hall of negligence, assault, battery, intentional infliction of emotional distress and negligent infliction of emotional stress. He's also saying that Hall instigated the fight, approaching him at their condo complex in "a rude or intimidating manner" and engaging in "offensive touching." Samson says Hall "assaulted, intimidated and battered" him and that afterward, he was "hurt and injured in his health, strength and activities."

In the suit, Samson claims that he "sustained injuries to his nervous system and person… [causing him] great mental, physical, emotional and nervous pain and suffering."

The civil suit is in addition to the criminal charges Hall already faces stemming from the incident, which could net him up to seven years in prison.

Update: Nov. 28 at 12:45 p.m. PT: Anthony Michael Hall has been charged with felony battery with serious bodily injury and could face up to seven years in prison, according to TMZ. There is no arraignment date set at this time.

Original article:

For a guy who got famous in the '80s for playing the skinny high school nerd who got bullied, Anthony Michael Hall is certainly carving out a completely different reputation for himself as an adult.

Hall, who most recently has been seen on shows like Murder in the First and Rosewood, allegedly roughed up a neighbor in an altercation at his Los Angeles condo complex — and the assault was all captured on security footage obtained by the all-knowing TMZ.

In the grainy footage, you can see the man alleged to be Hall angrily pace back and forth before approaching the victim and violently shoving the man into the bushes. TMZ reports that the man was injured pretty badly and suffered a broken wrist and hurt back.

More: Hey, Thomas Ravenel, maybe don't make jokes about assaulting women

The neighbor apparently called 911 and told police that Hall flew off the handle because the condo gate had been left open. The neighbor also said that Hall yelled at him to close the gate, but slammed it shut himself and then went ballistic.

But before we jump to conclusions here, it's important to note that the video is completely blurry and the man alleged to be Hall is so far away that it's impossible to tell if it's really him. The whole meltdown tale could just be some salacious celebrity gossip being peddled for a good story.

More: Farrah Abraham's assault charge sparks another nasty feud

Then again, this doesn't seem to be the first time Hall has flown off the handle on someone. TMZ ran another article in 2011 after Hall was arrested for terrorizing his fellow condo residents and harassing people for no apparent reason.

"I have considered buying a gun to stay safe from Hall... he's the scariest person I've ever encountered in my life," one neighbor told TMZ at the time.

What do you think? Was it Hall in the footage or is he innocent until proven guilty?

6 Things to Know About Noah Cyrus — Yes, Miley's Younger Sister

Did you know that Miley Cyrus had a younger sister with her own dreams of stardom? Yeah, neither did we. But she hit the ground running with her very first single, "Make Me (Cry)," which was released in November and sounds very similar to her famous older sister's style.

Noah is still a baby, pretty much — she's only 16 — but then again, by her age, Miley was a full-fledged star. TBD whether we'll watch her grow up in the public eye just like her sister, but in the meantime, here are six things you should know about Ms. Noah Cyrus.

1. "Make Me (Cry)" is a total earworm

Noah Cyrus video

Don't say we didn't warn you. Just try listening to this song only once. Even if you don't like it, it'll burrow its way into your brain and play over and over — and over — in your mind. Also, the music video isn't bad, either!

2. You'll be hearing lots more from her soon

Noah signed a six-figure record deal earlier this year, as TMZ reported. That deal included an option for a $1.5 million advance for a second album if the first goes over well. What can we say? Success runs in the family.

3. Her Instagram betrays her age

Noah Cyrus Instagram selfie

Though she may want to look all grown up, her IG is still full of fun, quirky pics just like your 16-year-old cousin would post. Then again, Miley's IG is similarly young-looking, so perhaps the Cyruses just never wanna grow up.

4. She's already teamed with a major English artist

“Make Me (Cry)” features the work of Labrinth, an amazing British artist who has teamed up with Rihanna, Usher and The Weeknd. Noah's first single already has a big gun on it — and it looks like she's not stopping any time soon.

5. She's a total daddy's girl

Here's a clip of Noah and her dad, Billy Ray Cyrus, performing "Could've Been Me" at an open mic last year. So sweet — and she's so young! Hard to believe this was only a year ago, as she now seems much more grown up. We're excited to see what's in store for her next — definitely one to watch.

6. She just had her first late-night performance

Noah appeared on The Tonight Show in January 2017, where she performed "Make Me (Cry)." And not only did she look just like her big sis, but she sounded like her too.

The Oprah Winfrey Show Episodes That Resonate Now More Than Ever

Every day when the clock strikes 4 p.m., I mourn just a little bit. I know it’s been six years, but I still miss The Oprah Winfrey Show. I know that she has an entire network now filled with delightful shows like Oprah: Where Are They Now? and Super Soul Sunday, but I still miss The Oprah Winfrey Show. I know that she has just announced that she will be a special contributor to 60 Minutes, but I still miss The Oprah Winfrey Show.

In fact, maybe all this stuff just makes me miss it more — like when you bump into an ex with a new person on their arm or when you eat an OK piece of pizza that is just good enough to remind you of a really good piece of pizza from your past.

More: Oprah Winfrey Joining CBS's 60 Minutes Couldn't Have Come at a Better Time

Especially these days, I just miss the hour of positivity and insight in my days — a chance to reassure myself that not everything and everyone is out for themselves and also a chance to see some really uplifting makeovers. Who knew a wrap dress and a flirty bob could really change everything?

Anyone else just want to sit back and think about our favorite Oprah Winfrey episodes? Let’s get in the way-back machine.

The time she asked her audience to pay it forward

In October of 2006, Winfrey gave each person in her audience $1,000 and a handheld camera and asked them to do one simple thing: something good. The results, which came in one week later, were so emotionally buoying that I think I’m still a little high from it. While some people simply gave the money to a good cause, many used their funds as a jumping off point for larger projects: Minnie Scheidt used her cash to raise over $70,000 for a community member with cancer, while Megan O’Gorman spent her money to help the parents who lived in the Hawaiian Islands buy plane tickets to see their sick children in a Honolulu hospital. She was shocked when Go! Airlines paid it forward again with 40 extra tickets.

This was Winfrey at her best: taking a simple idea and spreading it across the country while also inspiring people at home to take action in their own lives. The only problem — we can't find a clip of it anywhere online, but you can watch the story of one woman who paid it forward here. But don't worry, we have tons of other clips below!

The Coble family finding hope after tragedy

I literally cannot rewatch this clip due to unstoppable crying jags, but if you haven’t seen it, you probably should. In October 2007, Winfrey interviewed Lori and Chris Coble, a couple who lost their three children, Kyle (5), Emma (4) and Katie (2) in a horrific traffic accident with a tractor-trailer. The story makes you feel bad about every single time in your entire life that you ever felt bad for yourself. But don’t worry; after a few devastating segments, Winfrey reveals that the couple decided to try to have more children and almost exactly a year after the accident, they gave birth to triplets: two girls and a boy. Spoiler: each child’s middle name is the first name of one of the children the couple lost.

Her "all good news" show

Tell me you wouldn’t watch this right now. In October 1993, Winfrey decided that she was going to dedicate a show to 100 percent good news. During the episode, she gave a pair of hardworking parents a night on the town by babysitting and even literally gave a little boy a puppy. Not only was it a wonderful hour of uplifting events, it also contained definitive proof that Winfrey isn’t totally perfect: She isn’t the best at child care.

Looking racism in the eyes

The Oprah Winfrey Show wasn’t all about puppies and makeovers. Even in its earliest years, she took on the most serious issues, from AIDS to racism. In her first season, and in one of her most memorable shows, she visited Forsyth County, Georgia, a place where no black people had lived for 75 years and a hotbed of racism. In one of the most intense shows ever, she talked with the community and shed light on a difficult issue that badly needed to see both the light of day and Winfrey’s careful, surprisingly compassionate handling.

Erin Kramp, the best mom ever

Do you still have your tissues out from watching the story of the Coble family? Good, because you are going to need them. Starting in 1998, Winfrey followed the story of Erin Kramp, a young mom who was dying of breast cancer. Kramp had a 6-year-old daughter, Peyton, and decided to leave her with a wealth of video recordings plus birthday and Christmas presents for years to come. Not only was Kramp basically the best mom on Earth, she also doled out no-nonsense advice, like “Never get a haircut when you are going through a difficult emotional time,” and “When it comes to your husband, pick a very, very nice guy who has a lot of backbone.”

After Kramp lost her battle with cancer, Winfrey checked in often, following the family through remarriage and up to when Peyton entered college. She still watches the videos, now digitized, often.

The time she tricked her Favorite Things audience

As long as she is not the one getting surprised, Winfrey loves a good little prank. My favorite one came in her last season when she was borderline cruel to her last Favorite Things audience. She and her crew set up the show so that the audience thought that they had just missed the Favorite Things filming — they saw all of the previous audience members walking out of the studio loaded down with bags of gifts. Only after teasing them for a few minutes does she reveal that, nope! they were the lucky ones.

As Winfrey says in the accompanying interview: “That was really just done so that I could entertain myself.” You and me, both, Oprah. Please come back to us and please never change.

To Be Rob Lowe's Assistant, You’d Better Make Sure His Jacuzzi Is Turned On

Corinne Olympios, this season's resident villain on The Bachelor, has taken a lot of flak for being a 24-year-old who still has a nanny who makes her bed, does her laundry and makes her snacks while she's working.

More: 10 roles that made me fall in love with Rob Lowe all over again

But Corinne may have been onto something. Maybe nannies for privileged grown-ups will be the next big thing. Rob Lowe sure seems to be jumping on that train.

TMZ just published a job listing for the new assistant Lowe is looking to hire. He's offering $70,000 a year for the gig, but it comes with a crazy list of demands to make sure his life stays as comfy as he wants it.

For one thing, the prospective hire must be able to "ensure that the client [Lowe] is fed and has coffee throughout the day," "ensure that the client has a dinner plan if arriving home later than 8 pm in the evening" and call ahead to Lowe's estate to alert the staff if he "wants a Jacuzzi turned on or a massage ordered for his arrival."

Then there are some eerily vague requests, like how the new hire must "never assume anything" and lift "up to 25 pounds to support the client."

Oh, and he or she will have to schedule a haircut for Lowe before every single one of his TV appearances. That one actually seems pretty reasonable.

Lowe may be calling this person his "assistant," but with that list of job requirements, this is clearly his thinly veiled attempt at hiring an adult nanny. Just because the job description doesn't explicitly mention making cheese pasta and slicing cucumbers doesn't mean he doesn't want those things.

Before you jump at the chance to be the former Parks and Rec star's nanny assistant, though, Lowe's rep actually denied that the job requirement list was legit.

This job description does not match any document pertain[ing] to employment with Rob, but we can confirm that coffee is his number one priority in life," the rep said.

Bethenny Frankel’s Ex-Husband Arrested for Alleged Harassment

$

In a bit of sad news that has nothing to do with the current presidency, Bethenny Frankel’s ex-husband Jason Hoppy was arrested last Friday for harassment. He allegedly showed up at their 6-year-old daughter’s NYC school and yelled at Frankel, “I will destroy you.” According to Frankel, Hoppy showed up at Bryn’s school after he allegedly sent a bunch of unwanted emails and for some reason tried FaceTiming Frankel hundreds of times.

More: 5 reasons Bethenny Frankel's ex Jason Hoppy sounds like a nightmare

“The complainant said Hoppy had sent numerous emails and FaceTime calls numbering in the hundreds after a cease and desist letter was sent on November 22, 2016,” an NYPD spokesperson told Page Six. “On Friday, January 27, the suspect approached her and a friend at her child’s school at around 8:15 a.m. and tried to provoke a fight. He said, ‘I will destroy you, you can get all the lawyers you want, you’ve been warned.’”

Eek. That said, Hoppy denies the allegations according to Page Six, though it sounds like there is at least one witness. Hoppy was arrested that same day and charged with aggravated harassment in the first degree, harassment in the second degree and stalking in the fourth degree according to the NYPD (via Page Six).

More: Bethenny Frankel joins the Mommalogues (VIDEO)

Though Hoppy’s divorce attorney Bernard Clair and a spokesperson for Frankel had no comment for Page Six, Hoppy’s lawyer Robert C. Gottlieb had these choice words to say: “There are no words to express how saddened Mr. Hoppy is over his ex-wife’s unjustified actions. His only concern is his daughter and intends to vigorously fight these false charges.”

Unfortunately, this isn’t the first time lawyers have had to get involved in Frankel and Hoppy’s interactions since they were divorced — and we imagine this won’t be the last time, either. At least they’re not in a standoff over that NYC loft apartment anymore.

Is Taylor Swift the Regina George of Hollywood?

$
0
0

I think it's safe to say that the Taylor Swift backlash is in full swing. First, there was her summerlong PDA extravaganza with Tom Hiddleston, which left many cringing; then in late January, she drew harsh criticism for her involvement (or lack thereof) in the historic Women's March; today Swift woke up to find herself the subject of a media takedown on a wildly popular website.

Talk about bad blood.

This morning, BuzzFeed's Ellie Woodward posted an article titled "How Taylor Swift Played the Victim For A Decade and Made Her Entire Career."

The article offers a studied timeline supporting the opinion stated so bluntly in the title: Taylor Swift has made her career by casting herself as the victim in romantic relationships, friendships and in the now-infamous feud with Kanye West and Kim Kardashian West.

It's a bold viewpoint and she does a thorough job of supporting her opinion.

Woodward points out that Taylor Swift's early songs often paint her as an innocent party in love gone wrong or the victim to a man who mistreated her, saying, "The notion of sexual innocence emerged as she cried over her best friend giving 'everything she had' to a 'boy who changed his mind', and through the repeated mention of a highly sexualised “other woman” swooping in to steal her love interests. Her innocence also contributed to the emotional impact of the most common theme of all: Swift as the victim of the behavior of a bad boyfriend, or rejection by her crush. This is a common trope in teen pop music, but for Swift it became the very foundation of her posture as victim."

More: Criticism Hurled at Taylor Swift Exposes a Problem With the Women's Movement

Woodward goes on to detail how Swift began to cleverly construct her own image in response to the reception this victimhood received, manipulating the meaning of her music and the media's portrayal of her to do so.

The public was more than willing to accept the image of a blond, blue-eyed white woman as the tremulous victim of cruel men, backstabbing friends and circumstance — something that became abundantly clear in the infamous moment Kanye West interrupted her Grammy Award acceptance speech in 2009.

Kanye West Imma Let You Finish
Image: Giphy

If you have 10 minutes, definitely give the article a read — it's well-written and well-researched. It demonstrates just how media-savvy some celebs are and how useful celebrity gossip can be when untangling complex cultural narratives of privilege, racism, misogyny and public opinion.

The question we're supposed to ask ourselves now: Is Swift the Regina George of Hollywood? Does she trade on victimhood, throw rivals under the bus and use the powerful concept of white fragility to further her career?

Well, I mean damn. All available evidence seems to support this theory and the way Woodward neatly compiles it in one place makes coming to this conclusion almost unavoidable.

More: After Tom Hiddleston, Taylor Swift's Changing Her Approach to Relationships

The real question, I think, is whether or not Swift felt she had other options.

Like it or not, the music industry isn't about music anymore; it's about a brand, an image, a narrative.

Swift released her self-titled debut album when she was 16 years old. She began in country music and played into the sweetness of the genre. When she later transitioned to the world of pop music, she seemed uncomfortable playing the sexualized siren like Britney Spears before her.

You can almost imagine record execs sitting around a table debating how to package her, what pigeonhole she could most believably occupy. Pop culture doesn't give young women a whole lot of options, and Swift didn't seem confident enough to create her own.

The last seven years have shown us what that conversation has evolved into — a young woman trying to find her story. Is she the young ingenue? The jilted lover? The serial dater? The kind older sister? The fierce feminist?

Swift is 27 years old — old enough to know how to treat fellow women; conduct relationships in a mature way; wake up to the very real issues of systemic racism, cultural appropriation and gender issues. But is 27 old enough to play the game of public opinion when the rules seem like they're constantly shifting?

More: Taylor Swift's Ex-Fling Matty Healy Makes Misogynistic Remarks About Her

Is 27 old enough to navigate the complex and challenging way we view women — their relationships, their success, their ambition and their ability to construct their own narrative? How about when those opinions number in the millions?

Women are never too old to be demonized, too young to be sexualized. Walking the tightrope of public opinion is no easy feat, and Swift has absolutely made more than a few missteps. But as she retreats from the public gaze to gather herself and reframe her story, let's root for education, growth and above all, the emergence of a narrative that doesn't rely on stepping on others to lift herself up.

Because what's lost in this conversation is the fact that Swift is a powerful singer, an award-winning songwriter and accomplished musician. Let that be enough.

Can Breathalyzer-Enabled Bags of Chips Save Lives on Super Bowl Sunday?

$

The Super Bowl's coming up this weekend, and hundreds of millions of Americans will be tuning in for the game, the halftime show and the food and booze it gives us an excuse to binge on. (No judgment!) But when people get behind the wheel drunk, as research shows we're up to 77 percent likelier to do on Super Bowl Sunday, the party ends in tragedy — which is what Frito-Lay's Party Safe chip bags aim to prevent.

The limited-edition bags, created in partnership with Mothers Against Drunk Driving (MADD), come with a sensor that can detect alcohol on your breath. If you're safe to drive, the bag turns green; if it picks up on booze on your breath, it turns red and delivers the message, "Don't drink and drive," and gives a $10 Uber credit to the first 25,000 people who redeem it. You can even tap your phone to the bag to hail a ride.

More: Super Bowl Snacks Worth Every Calorie

Pretty cool technology — and definitely a cool idea — but some people seem to think it's just that: better in theory than reality. Since Tostitos won't be running a Super Bowl ad, some are calling it a marketing gimmick, and the Twitterverse is having a total field day ("Asking the Cheetos bag for a second opinion when the Tostitos bag tells me I'm too drunk to drive."). To rely on the bags too seriously, of course, would be silly — it's not a real Breathalyzer with the capacity to measure your exact blood-alcohol level.

But some are concerned that's exactly what people might do. One police officer in Lawrence, Kansas, tweeted this warning: "If you have to blow into a Tostitos bag to know if you're intoxicated, for the love of all that is holy, DO NOT DRIVE." Well said.

A Nursing Mother Had Her Baby Taken From Her in the Airport

Quiz time!

What would you do if you were on the street and you saw random people in uniform snatch a breastfeeding baby girl away from her mother? And then drag the baby’s mother down the street into a random office building?

I don’t know you personally, but I know what 98 percent of you would do, because you are decent, good humans. You would riot right there in the street. You would lose your shit. You would tackle the aggressors, uniforms or no. You would hang onto that baby girl for dear life until the mother could be found. You would record this disgrace on any device you had. You would call the authorities because you’d still trust them. You would tweet and post and make sure that this never, ever happened again. Because, hey, this is America, right?

More: Brace yourselves, feminists, for Trumpland

Well, I love you for that. And I wish we had all been there on Saturday at the Dallas-Fort Worth airport when a mother from Sudan — who is a legal permanent resident — had her 11-month-old U.S.-born baby forcibly removed from her arms as a result of Trump’s sweeping, xenophobic, racist-as-fuck spree of executive orders.

Let that sink in, please. Please don’t close your eyes and stop reading. Don’t turn away. Don’t click on the Natalie Portman baby bump story yet (Natalie would want you to stay with this story, trust us).

What's really knocking us for a loop is how little coverage — and how little outrage — we are seeing about this news item. Where is the outrage, truly? What's it going to take?

More: Let's take a good, hard look at the darkness that led us to a Trump presidency

There is nothing, nothing OK about this. And my only glimmer of hope is that it seems more and more people are beginning to realize what a death spiral our country is in.

The ACLU and multiple attorneys rushed to the airport to intervene on the mother and daughter’s behalf. Attorney Andrew Strong (we love you, sir) posted on Facebook during the ordeal, “I CANNOT BELIEVE THAT I AM HELPING DRAFT A RESTRAINING ORDER TO PREVENT AN 11 MONTH OLD CITIZEN FOR DEPORTATION.”

We can’t believe it, either, Mr. Strong.

As for the little girl, she’s back with her parents again. Both mother and daughter were released, but their future — here in their home, their legal home — is now uncertain.

Attorneys, I think you’re not going to be lacking for work in this new and terrible world we live in.

In the meantime, what are we going to do? Resist.

What President Trump's Supreme Court Pick Means for Women

$

Donald Trump just announced his pick to fill the empty seat in the Supreme Court, and it doesn't bode well for women.

Neil Gorsuch Getty image

Neil Gorsuch Getty image

Judge Neil Gorsuch, who attended Harvard with President Barack Obama, has landed the coveted nomination. Gorsuch has served on the 10th Circuit Court of Appeals, in Colorado, since 2006, and has distinctly Scalia-like leanings.

"The real appeal of Gorsuch nomination [sic] is he's likely to be the most effective conservative nominee in terms of winning over Anthony Kennedy and forging conservative decisions on the court," Jeffrey Rosen of the National Constitution Center told Politico. "He's unusual for his memorable writing style, the depth of his reading and his willingness to rethink constitutional principles from the ground up. Like Justice Scalia, he sometimes reaches results that favor liberals when he thinks the history or text of the Constitution or the law require it, especially in areas like criminal law or the rights of religious minorities, but unlike Scalia he's less willing to defer to regulations and might be more willing to second-guess Trump's regulatory decision."

Apprentice tweet

Apprentice tweet

Trump chose to make his announcement with a splashy, primetime reality TV special a la The Apprentice, and two potential nominees, Gorsuch and Thomas Hardiman, were brought to Washington, D.C. ahead of the announcement. Presumably, they were locked in a boardroom together and forced to compete in a cookie-selling operation then face off in a swimsuit competition.

"So was that a surprise? Was it?" Trump demanded after announcing the decision.

Jokes aside, this pick is deadly serious for the country as a whole, but women in particular. If approved by the Senate, Trump's pick — who will definitely be conservative — will sit in the seat left open by the death of Justice Anton Scalia last year, a seat for which the Republican-controlled Senate refused to even consider President Obama's more liberal nominee, Merrick Garland.

Once Trump's pick is approved, the court will again be closely divided, tilting right, with the crucial vote belonging to Justice Anthony M. Kennedy. Unfortunately, that all could change if another seat is vacated in the next several years, because Trump will undoubtedly once again choose a very conservative judge.

Justice Ruth Bader Ginsburg is 83 years old. Justice Stephen G. Breyer is 78. Both are reliably liberal judges, but if one or both retires or dies while Trump is president, the court will swing far right. And this would spell bad news for women's rights.

NARAL SCOTUS tweet 1

NARAL SCOTUS tweet 1

NARAL SCOTUS tweet

NARAL SCOTUS tweet

Roe v. Wade is the obvious bullseye for this particular court, and Trump has pulled no punches when it comes to his disdain for the rights of women. Beyond his repugnant approval of sexual assault with his "grab ‘em by the pussy" comments, he said on the campaign trail that women who have abortions should be punished. His Vice President, Mike Pence, is an ardent anti-choice advocate and spoke at last week's March for Life in D.C. The Supreme Court may ultimately choose to hear cases that have the potential to whittle away at a woman's right to decide the medical care her body needs. In some cases, that right could be completely decimated, as with the so-called "heartbeat bills" that would outlaw abortion as early as 6 weeks.

If the court does make such a decision, Trump has said the issue would "go back to the states" which would leave a wide swath of women all across the country at the mercy of their mostly male, mainly conservative legislatures.

But the danger goes far beyond reproductive rights. Trans women could be forced back into dangerous situations by having to out themselves using restrooms. Gay mothers could lose the right to adopt their own children; gay women could lose the right to be insured on their wives' health insurance plans. Parental leave and equal pay could lose traction. If any cases involving these issues come in front of a conservative court, it's pretty clear what the outcome would be.

And it's not pretty.

Sopranos Actor Frank Pellegrino Dead at 72

Sopranos actor Frank Pellegrino is dead at 72 from lung cancer.

More: Chilling message from Sopranos creator will make you rethink the entire show

When it came to his acting career, Pellegrino was best known for his roles in projects like Goodfellas and Law & Order: Criminal Intent, though he made a name for himself in the business playing FBI Chief Frank Cubitoso on The Sopranos from 1999 to 2004.

But he wasn't just an actor, Pellegrino was also a well-known restauranteur. He co-owned the Italian restaurant Rao's, which was first established in 1896 by Pellegrino's great-uncle Charles Rao. The spot is still known in New York City's East Harlem neighborhood as a celebrity hotspot. Even the restaurant has made a name for itself in the film world, being featured in The Wolf of Wall Street, Law & Order and even on Top Chef.

More: James Gandolfini's hometown honors him with his own street

Pellegrinos' longtime friend, Fox Business' Charles Gasparino, took to Facebook to pay tribute to Pellegrino and his lasting legacy writing, "To say Frank was a NY legend is an understatement — he bled this city and its egalitarian promise. People love to talk how no one can get a table at Rao's. Well, that’s true but it misses the point. The tables were given out to old time customers when the place became hot some years ago. New entrants needed to wait their turn to 'own' a table, and it didn’t matter who they were. [Business mogul] Warren Buffett was one of those who wanted a table and faced Frankie's famous 'no.'"

He added, "You see, Frankie loved to sing to his patrons and that night [he denied Buffett], as he was belting out The Temptations' classic 'My Girl,' he turned to Buffett and sang: 'I don't need no money, fortune or fame… I've got all the riches, baby, one man can claim. He did of course: His family, friends, his restaurant and his acting. Frank, I’m going to miss you screaming at me that is until we meet on the other side. RIP my friend."

Pellegrino is survived by his son, Frank Pellegrino Jr., who also serves as a co-owner of Rao's. Us Weekly reports the restaurant will be closed the upcoming week due to Pellegrino's death.

Dating Corinne is sounding more and more appealing as The Bachelor weeks progress. She honestly doesn't seem too bad, especially in the wake of that Taylor 'tude.

More: The Bachelor's Corinne actually had a point about that Taylor 'tude

And now, Corinne's former flame, Keith Berman, is speaking out and making her actions on the show seem even more understandable. Speaking to Us Weekly, Berman said the two hooked up a few times but their relationship never progressed further because they were long distance, with Corinne in Miami and Berman between Los Angeles and New York. The two ended on friendly terms though, with Berman saying they still keep in touch.

OK, so she can't be totally crazy if her exes are complimenting her, right?

Well, that's not all Berman does. He practically raves about her, calling her a "superstar right now."

He added of her presence on the show, "It’s right up her alley. She’s got a great personality for it. I was pumped that she was on it. I knew she would kill it, honestly."

More: Bachelorette's Chad Johnson & Robby Hayes trash-talked Nick Viall so hard

Berman believes Corinne is playing up her antics for TV, calling her "very normal" in real life.

"They’re trying to portray her as some stupid girl, but she’s really not that dumb. She knows exactly what she’s doing," Berman said.

Now this actually seems very plausible. There's no way Bachelor Nation won't demand she come back for Bachelor in Paradise and Berman agrees.

"She skipped the rose ceremony — no one’s ever done that. She's setting herself up. Bachelor is going to invite her back for God knows what spinoff, Paradise and this and that. She’s got followers growing by the second, so she’s clearly doing something right."

More: Corinne's mom refuses to believe her daughter got naked on The Bachelor

It's also very likely that Berman is hoping Corinne will leave the show still single, since it's clear he thinks very highly of her. With all these compliments Corinne might just give him another look when she returns from the show.

Do you think Corinne is just acting the part of the villain for the cameras on The Bachelor?

Miranda Lambert Turned Her Heartbreak (And 3-Night Drinking Binge) Into Art

When it comes to Hollywood divorces, Miranda Lambert has had it especially rough. Sure, she and Shelton had a pretty civil divorce but then he quickly moved on to Gwen Stefani, which means Lambert got to watch her ex's new, beautiful love story unfold in front of the world. Trust me, I write for an entertainment news site, I know what the people want. A story about Stefani and Shelton always does well. People love them, which means that before Lambert had even moved on from the experience of her divorce, the world had moved on from her and Shelton.

More: Today Miranda Lambert is chanting one mantra: 'back off, haters'

Now pair that with the fact that Lambert is a country girl, and it's no surprise to hear that she closed down some bars in the wake of her split.

Lambert knows, as any good singer does, how to turn that heartbreak into success, though. She used the fuel from those bar-filled nights to write her new album The Weight of Three Wings, specifically the song "Ugly Lights."

More: Miranda Lambert & Anderson East's future includes big things — like babies

"Every record I’ve ever made has been a reflection of where I am right then in my life, however old I am. And I’ve never held back at all," she told Billboard in an August interview. "But this time with what I happened to be going through in my life, being honest was never really a choice. Everybody knew anyway. So I just said, I’m gonna journal it, and — good days and bad days — use it for my art."

She also used it to help her move on. Lambert is now happily in a new relationship with fellow musician Anderson East.

The two kept things adorable on the CMAs red carpet this year.

Now We Know Why Cats Really Have Whiskers

$

My Grandma Hazel had a cat named Molly, whom she adored. In fact, it's probably safe to say she was obsessed with Molly. So when Molly started stumbling around and acting disoriented, my grandma understandably proceeded to panic and take her BFF (best feline friend, natch) straight to the vet.

More: What's a healthy weight for cats? The numbers probably aren't what you think

Fortunately, it was not a worst-case scenario — i.e., some rare and aggressive cancer — that was causing Molly's problems. Rather, the root of the issue was something none of us expected: her whiskers.

Sure, we all knew they didn't simply exist for decoration. But to be honest, we hadn't really ever paused to ask, "Why do cats have whiskers?" Well, in case you're as curious as a cat about this query, here's the 411 on your feline's facial hair.

For starters, cats' whiskers, or vibrissae, are extremely sensitive sensory tools. According to Live Science, these tactile hairs are jam-packed with nerves, which help make cats aware of their surroundings.

To put it in context, it's kind of like having fingers growing out of your face — they allow you to size up objects, people and places simply through touch, even at night. Since a cat's whiskers are roughly as long the cat is wide, cats often use their whiskers to gauge whether or not they can squeeze into a space.

More: It's time to stop scaring your cat with cucumbers

Another way cats use their whiskers? When hunting (or when trying to avoid being hunted). Because cats' whiskers are so sensitive, they can detect changes in air currents. This helps them both pinpoint prey and avoid approaching potential predators.

Whiskers are also an excellent barometer for your cat's moods. That's right; your feline friend might be trying to tell you something, and you're simply not picking up the visual clues. This includes taut whiskers when your cat feels threatened, relaxed whiskers when your cat is feeling calm and forward-pushed whiskers when your cat is excited or alert.

So what did whiskers have to do with the condition of my grandma's cat? Upon further inspection, the veterinarian discovered that Molly had somehow singed the whiskers off one side of her face. Because cat whiskers are so sensitive, damaged whiskers can wreak havoc on your pet's nervous system. The cat will not be able to receive the navigation signals it normally receives from its whiskers, which can lead to everything from disorientation to stumbling and more. Furthermore, it can cause your cat pain to lose its whiskers, so it's best to practice a hands-off approach.

More: 56 cat tattoos that will make you want to get inked

Besides, why would you ever want to mess with your cat's built-in sensory system anyway? It's what he or she uses to glean information about the world around them. And hey, that includes you! You can thank your cat's whiskers for helping to interpret you favorably and helping your cat to feel safe enough around you to form your formidable bond.

Kate Walsh on Why Defunding Planned Parenthood Would Be Disastrous

Like many American women, Kate Walsh has her own Planned Parenthood story — and strong feelings about the possible defunding of the organization.

"When I was uninsured, I relied entirely on Planned Parenthood for all of my health care needs, and I want all women to have access to affordable health care," Walsh told SheKnows. "Many women will suffer, and some will die from cuts to Planned Parenthood. To me, that is unconscionable."

"Furthermore, it is the law that every woman have access to a safe and legal abortion," she added.

The former Grey's Anatomy and Private Practice actor and longtime women's rights activist lent her voice to a video produced by SheKnows on the detrimental implications for women's health that would occur if funding to Planned Parenthood was cut.

MoreNo, Republicans: Defunding Planned Parenthood Definitely Will Not Save Money

This comes at a time when politicians in the both houses of Congress simultaneously introduced legislation to overturn a rule that protects health care for more than 4 million people who rely on Title X, the nation’s family planning program. Currently, Planned Parenthood health centers service approximately 1.5 million patients through Title X — roughly one third of the more than 4 million people served by the program — in some cases providing their only access to reproductive health care.

“The past few weeks have made it clear that the American people will not stand for this kind of attack," Planned Parenthood President Cecile Richards said in a statement on the organization's website. "For many of our patients, not being able to get care at a Planned Parenthood health center means that they don’t get care."

MoreA Roundup of All the Ways Your Health Rights Have Been Jeopardized This Week

Richards called this a "dangerous plan" and echoed previous statements, saying that the organization will "not take these attacks lying down."

"When Congress goes home in a few weeks, you had better believe there will be people in pink hats ready to meet them at every town hall, grocery store and public appearance.”

Amy Schumer Slams Trump in Defense of Her Cousin, Senator Chuck Schumer

Alright, get the eye-rolling out the way now because what you're about to read is necessary if you want to stay in to the political and cultural loop but your soul may die a little from reading it. Amy Schumer defended her cousin, Senator Chuck Schumer, against President Trump's most recent Twitter barbs through a recent impassioned Instagram post. Now, if you're wondering what the President of the United States of America is doing tweeting insults about a senator, congratulations: you're on the same page as Amy Schumer.

More: Amy Schumer applauded for Taylor Swift apology without excuses (PHOTOS)

Schumer was clearly not up for for the guff being given to her cousin. She posted the damning tweet of Trump's which characterized Senator Schumer at "Fake Tears," in reference to his recent words on the refugee crisis and the tears he shed while giving a speech about it. Schumer managed to take a screenshot of the tweet before it got deleted and wrote a scathing reply to Trump while defending the actions of her cousin.

Her reply to Trump's "Fake Tears" comments, which appear quite unpresidential in tone, doesn't mince words. Schumer takes a moment to remind us that Trump is more obsessed with her cousin than he is with the state of the country, including soldiers and civilians who have already died on his watch. Schumer then goes on to state clearly that Senator Schumer "cannot act," implying that the obstacles he faces at the moment in overcoming the allegedly harsh and unfair executive orders being issued by the President. She continued, "He can barely smile on cue. He can't help but be transparent and genuine. He was hurt for those people and all the people facing such unconstitutional injustice."

More: Amy Schumer was right to be royally pissed at one downright disrespectful fan

Schumer's defense is necessary in times like these, when it can feel tough to wrap your head around what the heck is actually going on in Washington D.C. There's no doubt that many of us have strong opinions and feelings about the state of the country; Schumer's Instagram post confirms that it's just as tough as we think for those politicians with our best interests in mind. As she put it, "He [Senator Schumer] can barely smile on cue. He can't help but be transparent and genuine. He was hurt for those people and all the people facing such unconstitutional injustice."

Perhaps one benefit of listening to celebrities in times like these is that, in the case of a handful of them (like Schumer), there is a direct line of communication to Capitol Hill. Schumer's status as a celebrity allows her the platform to speak on important issues, too. In the past, she's used it to voice her support of Hillary Clinton; in the case of defending her cousin, that platform came in handy yet again.

More: Amy Schumer left a lasting impression on her boyfriend's brother

While it's far from comforting to hear that Senator Schumer is one of many who are mired in political turmoil right now, it's heartening to see that he has a loud and proud family member coming to his defense. We may not know what the coming weeks and months will bring, but if anything, I'm glad we've got Schumer speaking up and speaking the truth when the occasion demands it.

My Complicated Feelings on Fellow Slovenian-American Melania Trump

$

In the U.S., outside of Cleveland, Slovenian-Americans aren’t exactly the most visible ethnic group. So when Donald Trump married Melanija Knavs in 2005, for some, it was the first time they had heard of Slovenia.

The country of 2 million which gained independence from Yugoslavia in 1991 is home to the breathtaking Julian Alps (picture the opening of The Sound of Music), stunning architecture, amazing food influenced by its location bordering Italy, Austria, Croatia and Hungary – and now, is the birthplace of our First Lady.

More: Support for Melania Trump Surges as Videos and Pictures Go Viral

Growing up in Cleveland – which has the largest population of Slovenians outside the country itself – the culture was a huge part of my life, reinforced by weekly language classes, being part of a folk dancing group and singing in several traditional vocal ensembles until I left the area after college.

So back in October, when a Slovenian radio station contacted me to do an interview, I should have known that they were going to bring up Melania, but I didn’t prepare for the question when it came:

“Speaking of other Slovenian-Americans in New York, what do you think of Melania?” the host asked.

Caught off-guard, I paused, answering: “I don’t know her personally, but, um, she and I…would make very different marriage-related decisions.”

The station cut that segment of the interview for being too controversial.

More: If You Call Melania Trump a Bimbo, You're Part of the Problem

Now, several months after the interview, I still have the same assessment of Melania: the only thing I can say with certainty is that we'd make different decisions regarding marriage. Of course I'm concerned that she's married to someone who openly brags about sexual assault and part of me wants to slip a note written in Slovenian under her door at Trump Tower making sure she's okay and invite her over for klobase and slivovitz. But another part of me hopes that she knows exactly what she's doing – in which case, defending her husband's indefensible policies and remarks cannot be excused. Either way, it's complicated.

Jess Zimmerman perfectly captures what so many of us are feeling in her Jan. 27 article for New York Magazine’s The Cut, entitled “Compassion for Melania Is Misguided – But It Isn’t Wrong.” The main takeaway is that although Melania consistently looks visibly disturbed in any public appearances, any compassion felt towards her should be directed to the people who will be negatively impacted by her husband’s racist, misogynist, xenophobic and homophobic policies.

“Every time you’re touched by Melania’s plight, donate a buck and a half to organizations that support the people who truly need you, the people in whom you’d see yourself if you ever got a chance to see them,” Zimmerman wrote in The Cut.

I’m conflicted by the #FreeMelania movement. On one hand, she looks absolutely miserable and I cannot fathom having to spend five minutes with that gaslighting megalomaniac, let alone be married to him. If you’ve ever spent time with someone abusive, you know how thoroughly exhausting it is, making it difficult to focus on anything else – even if that thing is removing yourself from the abusive situation.

More: We Are All Tiffany Trump

On the other hand, she is a woman with autonomy (hypothetically, at least) who may, for whatever reasons, make the deliberate (and informed?) choice to remain married to that person. Is it patronizing to think that Melania doesn’t know what she’s doing and somehow got mixed up in a world of gilded baby carriages and mysterious Tiffany gift boxes? It’s hard for me to believe right now, but I genuinely hope that she’s getting something out of this relationship aside from designer suits and public sympathy.

Either way, we don’t know what goes on behind closed doors. I truly wish Melania well, and would happily meet with her to swap potica recipes, or plot to dismantle the patriarchy from the inside.

12 of the Most Sexist Super Bowl Commercials Ever

$

There are a ton of reasons to love the Super Bowl, and the awesome commercials are pretty high up on the list. The plethora of ass-backwards ads geared toward men that reduce women to sexual stereotypes, however, don't exactly get us excited for the big game.

I mean, the fact that Super Bowl ads are mostly all directed toward men is sexist in itself. Do advertisers seriously think male consumers are the only ones watching the Super Bowl? It's kind of stupid if you think about it. Companies are spending millions of dollars in advertising money creating spots that are alienating a good portion of their audience. Money well spent.

More: 15 super-sexist things Disneyland's Gaston says

The public has caught onto the sexism that exists in Super Bowl ads and has fought back over the past couple of years by tweeting #NotBuyingIt and referencing some of the more offensive commercials. And companies also seem to have taken notice: The amount of insulting ads appear to be decreasing and there's even been some overcompensation in the form of a pretty sexy 2014 H&M David Beckham spot, along with a 2016 Hyundai commercial that featured a neighborhood teeming with multiple Ryan Reynolds.

But that doesn't mean the sexist ads don't still keep coming. Here's a look at some of the worst Super Bowl commercials we've witnessed over the years.

1. Cure Auto Insurance: "Avoid Distractions"

Just, no. Does this company really think their 2016 ad will entice anyone to buy their insurance? A man openly ogling a woman despite the fact his father is dying before his eyes is just wrong.

2. Buick: "She Odelled It"

Yup, women are capable of great feats of athleticism — as long as it means it'll snag them a man to marry.

3. Pepsi: Britney Spears' old-school Super Bowl commercial

2002 was a great year for those who still had a "not that innocent" crush on Britney Spears. Everybody got to ogle a bare-bellied Spears gyrating around cans of Pepsi for a good minute.

4. Miller Lite: "Catfight"

6. Teleflora: "Valentine's Day"

The message of this ad is plainly spelled out by Adriana Lima: If a man presents a woman with flowers, then she is a sure thing. The company clearly thinks that females are simple, delicate creatures who will offer themselves up sexually when given gifts.

7. Victoria's Secret featuring Adriana Lima

Lima is back again to convey another simple message: Hey, guys! As soon as the game is over, have your woman don lingerie and you'll get laid!

Because women don't have anything to dream about that's worthwhile besides rainbows, butterflies and our knight in shining armor, while men dream of general badassery and — surprise, surprise — a half-naked Adriana Lima.

9. Fiat: "Seduction"

Women come running when men leer at them in public according to this ad. This commercial reinforces exactly what nonprofit Hollaback tried to disprove in October: Women like to be catcalled.

10. GoDaddy: Bar Refaeli's "Big Kiss Perfect Match"

Everything You Need to Know About Osteopenia

$
0
0

Osteopenia “is a term used to describe bone density that is somewhat lower than normal,” but not as low as full-fledged osteoporosis.

Women are four times (four times!!!) more likely than men to have osteoporosis, which those whose bones have already been weakened by osteopenia are likely to develop. Luckily, osteopenia can be treated and kept from becoming osteoporosis, especially if it is diagnosed early by a bone-density scan.

Who is most at risk for osteopenia?

According to WebMD, the most common risk factors for developing osteopenia include being a woman in general, “being thin and/or having a small frame,” having a “family history of osteoporosis,” smoking, having “a history of anorexia nervosa,” and at times “leading an inactive lifestyle.” Despite that last risk factor, many female athletes are also at risk for osteopenia.

More: What Affects Bone Health?

Why are female athletes at risk?

Female athletes are likely to develop osteopenia along with two other medical conditions, which all together are known as the female athlete triad. The triad consists of eating disorders, loss of menstruation and osteopenia. Athletes often feel pressure not only to perform well, but to look a certain way while doing it.

Frequent hard exercise can lead to low levels of estrogen production. Estrogen is a key hormone for “growth and development of reproductive organs,” as well as maintaining a healthy menstrual cycle and bone density. Maintaining a healthy diet is also key to menstrual and bone health. A combination of lowered estrogen and dangerously restrictive eating habits heighten female athletes’ risk of both osteopenia and amenorrhea (loss of periods).

What are the symptoms of osteopenia?

Osteopenia is often completely invisible until a fracture occurs. Usually, the first bones to fracture are the spine, the wrist or the hip. Other symptoms include backaches, poor posture and sometimes loss of height.

How can I prevent osteopenia?

Eating a balanced, nonrestrictive diet (preferably full of bone-enriching calcium and vitamin D) is a huge part of maintaining healthy bones. Exercise is also important, though as mentioned above, it can heighten your risk for osteopenia if done to excess. If you can, healthy amounts of strength training are a great way to increase muscle mass and keep bones strong. Quitting (or at least limiting) smoking and drinking will also lower risks of osteopenia and osteoporosis.

More: My Mom's Recent Bone Fracture Opened My Eyes to Osteoporosis

How is osteopenia treated?

Again, a healthy diet with plenty of calcium and a balanced amount of exercise play huge roles in both preventing osteopenia itself and preventing osteopenia from getting worse (and possibly developing into osteoporosis). Vitamin D supplements are often recommended, as they help the body more readily absorb calcium. Some doctors may also prescribe hormone replacement therapy to promote estrogen levels, though this treatment is usually reserved for menopausal and postmenopausal women and comes with its own risks.

Regular bone-density scans (especially if you are already in the at-risk category for weakened bones or have a family history of osteopenia and osteoporosis) are imperative in catching osteopenia early on. As mentioned above, osteopenia can definitely be treated and doesn’t have to develop into osteoporosis if you receive the proper care and find out early enough. For more resources on the treatment and prevention of osteopenia and osteoporosis, go here.
