5 things therapy has done for me

$

Why pay $250 an hour just to talk to someone? That was my sister's reaction when I said I was going to start seeing a therapist. Here's what I think.

While a psychiatrist doesn't cost 5 cents anymore, therapy can be had for a lot less than $250. There are community mental health centers with sliding fee scales which is what I was going to then. There is insurance, for now at least. I've even known psychotherapists who would accept less than their usual fee for long-time patients in temporarily dire straits.

More: I thought my hypomania was just relief from my depression

And I'm not paying to talk to just "someone." A therapist usually has at least an M.A., and sometimes a Ph.D. Psychiatrists have an M.D. or D.O. They have years of training, more years of experience and colleagues they can consult if your problem is particularly challenging or out of their area of expertise. You can also find peer counselors, religious counselors, and proponents of every variety of therapy or treatment you can name, from neuro-linguistic programming to electroconvulsive therapy.

Now, as I reflect on my clueless sister, I've started thinking about all the things that therapy has done for me.

1. Given me a diagnosis. When I first started going, back in the 80s, I could only afford one of those community mental health centers with the sliding fee scale. (At the time, I paid $5 per session.) There I was diagnosed with depression. The primary treatment they offered was "talk therapy," but I had years and years of mental difficulties to talk about. Later, when I was seeing a psychiatrist, I was re-diagnosed with bipolar 2 and anxiety disorder. Suddenly, my past became a lot clearer, even if my present was still messed up.

More: Just because I'm agoraphobic doesn't mean that I'm introverted

2. Provided me with medication. There has been a lot of it over the years. I started, as so many did, with Prozac, which had a noticeable effect on my depression. It was like the difference between watching a black-and-white TV that got only one channel that showed only tampon commercials, compared to a wide-screen color TV that got hundreds of cable channels. The meds I'm on right now keep me functional, at least enough to make a living and be creative.

3. Offered me perspective. When I first started going to my current therapist, the word I used most often to describe myself was "pathetic." I no longer call myself that. Dr. B. helped me view parts of my past in a different light and helped me develop techniques and strategies to deal with the problems I was facing at the time. Now she keeps me on track, reminding me that I have the tools to cope with many of my recurring problems. And she reminds me how far I've come since my "pathetic" days.

4. Helped my relationships. When we married, I was still smack in the middle of clinical depression. (My husband had problems too, but I don't want to talk about them here, except to say that a codependent and a depressive living together can never decide where to go for lunch. And that was the least of our difficulties.) Several times since then, we have had to turn to counselors to work on problems related to sex, money, and just plain living and communicating together.

More: My partner used my undiagnosed bipolar disorder to gaslight me

5. Gave me alternatives. Actually, though I've attended group therapy a few times, what I've learned from it is that it's not for me. I do appreciate the fact that it's there if I should need or want it, and that my therapist can recommend a group if she or he is going to be away for a while. Perhaps I just haven't found the right group yet, although the support communities I've found online may serve part of the same purpose.

In short, therapy has given me my life, my sanity, my coping skills, my emotional strength and my creativity back. And I can definitely say that professional therapy has been more than worth the money.

How not to lose your mind when consuming media during the Trump administration

$

Last night, I had a long talk with a close friend about our media consumption. I caught her at a moment when she’d been bingeing on Twitter and she was in a state. I have a unique perspective on all of this because, although I am a news and entertainment editor, I don’t participate in social media in my personal life. So I don’t have to deal with the constant onslaught of bad news. I get to choose when it’s time to look at media. And it’s liberating.

It’s not about tuning it all out and staying ostrich-like — that’s for sure. I am keenly aware of the news out there — every hour, there’s some new bit of news from the political arena. It feels like a roller coaster. The inauguration was a day so full of anxiety and fear for me that I could barely concentrate. The news of Trump immediately deleting the Whitehouse.gov pages for LGBTQ+ rights, Obamacare and climate change felt like an immediate blow, as did the executive order he sent out to derail the Affordable Care Act. Then the Women’s March on Washington felt incredible to attend, as did observing the sister marches all over the world. And now, Trump has really gone hard this week — the news has been absolutely abysmal.

More: Being more genuine on social media could make 2017 suck less

The Global Gag Rule feels as though we’ve rewound to the Reagan era. The executive order to reinstate the Dakota Pipeline is absolutely heartbreaking. The muzzle newly affixed to the EPA is terrifying. The Muslim travel ban — barring immigrants from Iraq, Iran, Libya, Somalia, Sudan, Syria and Yemen from coming to the United States — is absolutely unacceptable.

And that’s just the beginning. As my editor pointed out, there has been news of late about “abortion defunding, pipeline restarting, NAFTA canceling, wall building, refugee rejecting, attacks on Chicago, continued obsession about crowd sizes, gag orders on government agencies, Supreme Court nominees, shutting down a National Parks Twitter over climate change tweets,” and on and on. That last one seems particularly petty — though no less insane than any of the other recent developments.

So, how to cope with all of this? From someone who has respectfully declined to participate formally in social media, I have five ideas.

1. Don’t get sucked into the siren song of your newsfeed

It’s hard not to scroll, scroll, scroll through Facebook and Twitter, but the results are devastating. Rather than getting all of your news via social media, try choosing a few news outlets and seeing what they have to say regularly. It’s wise to pick a few that have differing political opinions — for example, The New York Times and also The Wall Street Journal — to get the full spectrum of coverage out there.

2. Get involved

From Day 1, I have been all about “don’t agonize, organize.” Sign up with your local activism groups, attend their meetings, show up at your senators’ offices, write letters, attend peaceful protests and pay attention.

More: Social media clauses are the new marriage must

3. Share news with your friends

I have an email thread going with several like-minded friends as well as a WhatsApp chain with all of the members of the bus we chartered to Washington, D.C., last weekend, and we’re all frequently sharing links about news and resources. For example, when I saw that Greenpeace protestors scaled a crane in D.C. and unfurled a “RESIST” sign, I immediately shared it with the gang.

4. Set time windows

Don’t let yourself get stuck on the internet for two hours straight, and don’t check Trump’s Twitter every five minutes. Allow yourself a small time window each day to keep up with the news — it’s vital that we pay attention, and don’t shirk away just because it’s painful — and when that time is up, move on. Set at timer, and stick to the time slot you choose.

5. Meditate

No joke, meditation is extremely valuable through all of this. I don’t meditate daily, but most days, I set aside at least 10 minutes to sit and breathe. This helps with the maelstrom of information that has been coming at an alarming rate.

Mary Tyler Moore and I both made it on our own

How will you make it on your own?

It’s a question I’ve been asked by family members, employers, concerned parents of friends and most frequently, myself.

Almost 50 years after The Mary Tyler Moore Show’s debut, that is still the default question we ask women, still in disbelief that going solo is a legitimate option. Even though the lyrics of the theme song changed after the first season — adopting the more familiar “Who can turn the world on with her smile?” — I’ve always identified more with the original version and its spunky heroine Mary Richards.

MTM season 1

MTM season 1

Today, Mary Tyler Moore — the woman who brought Mary Richards to life — died at the age of 80, and given the influence she has had on me and other women in the media, it feels like a death in the family.

My first job in a newsroom was in the early 2000s. Despite being a full 30 years after The Mary Tyler Moore Show debuted on CBS, people couldn’t help but draw the comparison between us — especially since I was the only woman in the office.

More: Mary Tyler Moore's legacy is one of love and living a happy, imperfect life

It would be more than a decade until I worked in another newsroom (where I’m sitting right now). As soon I found out I’d be working at SheKnows, I excitedly told people that the office reminded me of Mary’s workspace at WJM-TV — complete with my editors situated in offices at the perimeter behind floor-to-ceiling windows.

On my first day, a dear friend (specifically, my Murray from my previous job) texted me saying that he was debating whether to call me and sing The Mary Tyler Moore Show theme song. I immediately told him not to because I knew I would cry and at this point I still wasn’t sure if I had made it after all.

More: We've barely started 2017 and we've already lost 8 celebs

It’s not just the concept and star of the show that I’ve always responded to — it’s also the progressive issues the show addressed during its seven-season run. It took on feminism, the wage gap, the fact that single women actually have sex before marriage, divorce, LGBTQ issues and infertility. As someone committed to openly sharing accurate sexual and reproductive health information, I’m especially partial to the Season 2 premiere, which featured Mary producing a controversial segment on sex education. A Season 5 episode where Mary goes to jail for refusing to name a story’s source is unfortunately relevant given the rapidly changing journalistic environment since the change in administration.

Unlike other shows starring a strong woman in media (looking at you, 30 Rock and Sex and the City), Mary ended the show the same way she started it — single. She was successful and she was thriving — without a man. Yes, she dated and enjoyed herself, but obtaining a husband was not part of her mandatory checklist for a happy ending. By every account, she did make it on her own.

Jack's death is coming on This Is Us whether we can handle it or not

As if last night's episode of This is Us wasn't heart wrenching enough, the second half of the season is apparently only going to get more emotional.

More: This Is Us: A guide to the all-star cast and where you've seen them before

Show creator Dan Fogelman dished on what's next in the show during an interview with Entertainment Weekly.

"I've always known when Jack died," Fogelman revealed. "The how is going to take much longer to reveal. To me, even when you’re watching the pilot, long before you knew Jack may not be in the picture in the present day, this family always felt loving and good but broken. There’s still — and there’s going to be for some time — a lot of unanswered questions. What was going on in their marriage whenever this happened? How did it happen? Those questions aren’t going to be answered for some time. It’s something that, like many of the great tragedies in our lives, might not be talked about all the time or easy to talk about."

More: So, basically, Milo Ventimiglia just doesn't have any more time for Gilmore Girls

During last night's episode, we got a glimpse at the triplets' birthdays, while it mirrored Jack's death day when they were high school-looking teenagers. All while then flashing back to the present as Kate screamed out her heavy emotions during a workout class.

How much more can my fragile heart take?!

Apparently, this show is going to test those limits.

"It's certainly going to take the rest of our season for her to even be opened up enough to really talk about it, and it’s going to take even longer for the audience to get the story of what happened in full," Fogelman added. "I think you get the sense, watching the episode and watching the show that, listen, something happened. And it’s something that broke this family apart, not irreparably. They all love each other. The Big Three is amazing together. But there’s stuff here, and I think a lot of it is held with Jack."

More: This Is Us had a big twist — but it also gave tons of tiny clues along the way

I wasn't particularly afraid about the circumstances surrounding Jack's death. Until now. So thanks for that, Mr. Fogelman. I guess I assumed he got cancer (or something of that nature) and passed that way, but now I'm wondering if he committed suicide. Especially because Fogelman alludes to what was happening in Jack and Rebecca's marriage at the time of his death.

Angelina Jolie & Brad Pitt's divorce gets some #whitepeopleproblems

The saga of Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie's divorce continues over their kids, and it's starting to sound like something from Real Housewives.

More: Brad Pitt reportedly has secret damaging tapes of Angelina Jolie

The newest argument: Where, oh where, should Pitt and Jolie send their children to school?

According to In Touch Weekly, Angelina doesn't want to forsake her globetrotting lifestyle so her kids can have a stable home environment. She likes the free-flowing globalism. Pitt, on the other hand, is ready to have a home base in Los Angeles, but Jolie is reportedly having none of it.

A source told the outlet, "The kids’ therapists agree that it’s in their interests to live in one place instead of moving all over the world. And they also agree with Brad that the kids should go to regular school because they are missing out on important development in their lives. They don’t have friends, and their entire world is the family, which just isn’t healthy."

More: Brad Pitt admits guilt to half of Angelina Jolie's abuse accusation

The source added, "[Brad] and his team are currently scouting out the best private schools in the LA area, and he wants to involve Angie in the process. He is hoping she will come around. But if she doesn’t, their entire custody battle will play out in family court."

What did the kids do before this? Romper reports the kids initially attended a French school called Lycée Français, which has international campuses, so they could easily slip into a routine no matter where they were traveling. That apparently got to be too much for the kids, though, so they are now homeschooled by a team of international teachers.

More: Brad Pitt's divorce "mistake" was actually carefully planned

With the kids getting older, however, it makes sense for the Pitt-Jolie plan to firm up a strategy for the future. It just doesn't sound like they're going to be able to do it without help from the courts.

Suits' Mike just pulled a Dead Poets Society, & we totally need more

Suits is back with the rest of Season 6 and Jessica Pearson is officially gone. It's definitely a different vibe without Gina Torres, but as sad as we were to see her go, we've found something else to focus all our energy on.

More: Suits Season 6 photos tease an unpredictable time for Specter Litt

Mike Ross tried out teaching in Wednesday's premiere. You heard us; Mike just had his very own John Keating (you know, from Dead Poets Society) moment.

After realizing how hard it will be for him to get any type of job, especially one involving law, now that he is a convicted felon, Mike sought out advice from his childhood priest, Father Sam Walker (Scott Michael Campbell).

Walker decided to offer Mike a job as a teacher at the very same Catholic school Mike attended when he was young. He was hesitant at first, but Walker told Mike to try it out for at least two weeks until the former teacher returned from vacation.

It didn't turn out to be that easy. Actually, practicing law seemed to be a breeze compared to Mike's teaching abilities. The classroom of teen boys was not welcoming and even found a mug shot of Mike to tease him with. Yeah, Mike had quite the rough first day.

But, he channeled his inner Robin Williams, went back and tried his best to transform his students' lives. Eventually, he got through to them by revealing that their former teacher actually wasn't gone for two weeks on vacation, but was leaving indefinitely due to cancer. The latter also came as a shock to Mike after Father Walker finally told him the truth. He was hoping maybe Mike would end up loving teaching and stick around.

After finding his teaching groove, things went downhill for Mr. Ross. Unfortunately, one of the students informed their parents that Mike has a prison record, so of course they complained to Father Walker. Now Mike is out of a job — again.

More: Jessica's Suits Season 6 departure was perfect

Dead Poets Society

Seriously? Mike is already fired? He didn't even get his "Carpe Diem" moment. We need more of Mike as Mr. Ross. Here's hoping there is some way that Father Walker can convince the parents that Mike is actually good for their students.

It's a nice change of pace for Mike. After all, he also told Harvey during the episode that he is done with Harvey and Specter Litt. At least for now, Mike never wants to come back to the firm where he practiced law illegally. He appears to be ready to move on and find a new path since serving prison time.

Wouldn't the perfect way be as teacher? Mike really wants to spend his time now by helping others, so why not as Mr. Ross? He could truly make a difference and become the next John Keating we all know and love.

Keep those fingers crossed that Mike somehow finds his way back to teaching. Though, seeing as this is a series about lawyers, there's probably a better chance Mike ends up getting back into law in some way, shape or form. Until that happens, maybe Suits can give us a few more episodes of Mike as a teacher?

If the White House gets "boring," KellyAnne Conway could join Real Housewives

You know your country's political system is falling in the toilet when Andy Cohen compares it to Real Housewives and instead of scoffing or even laughing the thought that crosses your mind is Huh, ya, that kind of makes sense.

I don't know whether to laugh or crawl under my bed and hide for the next four years.

More: Kellyanne Conway suggests that moms shouldn’t work in the White House

While Donald Trump has gone from reality TV to president, KellyAnne Conway can look forward to a long and illustrious career on the Real Housewives if she ever wants to retire from her senior adviser position.

Cohen gave Conway an open invitation to join the Bravo franchise if she ever chooses to give up politics. Does this mean the Real Housewives of D.C. might be coming back strong?

"I’ve been saying for a year — I was calling all the debates 'Housewives reunions,' because they were," Cohen said. "The parallels to the Housewives and a lot of things that happened during the election, there are so many."

Conway would make the perfect housewife. In fact, she'd put some of these housewives to shame with her behavior. After all, Conway did punch a guy in the face, and she did suggest that mom's have no place in the White House. She's very outspoken about her opinions, even when knowledgable people are presenting her with clear evidence of facts suggesting the opposite.

Yup, sounds like a housewife to me.

The sad reality is... She's not. Not yet, at least.

Is your dog's microchip causing more harm than good?

$

When you start reading all of the things that could possibly go wrong with a pet microchip, it admittedly gets scary.

My pet pooch is microchipped and came with his microchip when I adopted him from a rescue organization at just 12 weeks old. I've rarely thought about it since, judging it as an added peace of mind if my dog were to ever get lost somehow.

More: Here are 10 of the smartest dogs in the world — does your pup make the list?

But it turns out, there are things to consider when deciding if a microchip is best for you and your pet.

In recently years, rare cases have been reported of an animal's behavior changing once the microchip has been implanted. While this doesn't seem to be the norm, it does bring up some important questions about the safety of these chips that will live inside our furry family members for the extent of their lives.

Dr. Rhonda Casper said she has been implanting microchips as a vet for 20 years, and she's never had a complication.

"Sometimes they migrate and they won't be in the location they're supposed to be, but that doesn't cause any harm to the pet," Casper explained. "I haven't seen one adverse effect with one."

She has also never heard or seen a personality change as a result of a chip.

But after the United Kingdom passed compulsory dog microchipping laws back in April 2016, reports of the dangers and risks associated with the chips really started coming out of the woodwork.

Reports of rejected chips, registration problems and improperly implanted chips are just the tip of the iceberg.

More: 11 things only border collie owners understand

The biggest thing most people feared is the chance that a dog would develop a tumor as a result of the chip, which could not only affect their personality but risk a pet's life.

According to U.K. journalist Lee Connor, chip manufacturers stated the risks of a tumor were "negligible." But microchip tests on mice and rats showed a 1 to 10 percent chance of developing "aggressive and lethal micro-chip induced cancerous growths." Apply those numbers to dogs and there are at least 20,000 pets in England alone who could be affected by these growths.

Casper, however, said all of these reports are unsubstantiated and should be taken with a healthy amount of scientific skepticism.

"I think there was some concern about cancer, but I don't think it's ever been linked," Casper told SheKnows. Casper expanded that the injection site does cause some irritation and inflammation, most notably in cats, which some were concerned correlated with tumors. That claim was never confirmed.

Luckily, in the United States at least, we still have a choice about chipping our pets. So should you get your pet microchipped?

"I always recommend people get their pets microchipped because if you lose a pet, it might be the one thing that brings them back to you," Casper explained.

More: 7 dogs that look like a real-life Scooby Doo

After reading these reports, I do plan to keep my dog's chip. For me, the safety outweighs the risks. But I do believe it is important to constantly keep manufacturers in check. Asking these questions and doing the research will encourage the technology and the people behind the technology to continue improving rather than becoming complacent, especially considering the fact that one day, it won't only be our furry friends that have implants. Soon, the technology could be used on humans too.

Were you aware of the risks associated with microchipping your dog? Do you think the benefits outweigh the risks?

Full Frontal with Samantha Bee had the perfect tribute to Mary Tyler Moore

Today was a sad day for feminists everywhere. Still reeling from President Trump's latest anti-choice measures, feminists were saddened to hear of Mary Tyler Moore's passing. It wasn't entirely unexpected, given the health issues Moore has battled these last several years, but that didn't make the news any less devastating.

More: Samantha Bee reminds us that President Obama wasn't perfect

A true icon, Moore paved the path for legions of career-minded women with her relatable character, Mary Richards. Her character was the determined single woman other women hoped to be, and her newsroom antics encouraged aspiring members of the workforce that they "might just make it after all."

Samantha Bee and her cohorts were clearly saddened by Moore's death, so they decided to include a tribute to the iconic actress in an episode of Full Frontal already packed with feminist messages. The tribute followed an a cappella number featuring several talented women wearing the memorable pink hats from last week's Women's March on Washington.

At the very end of the episode, the singers shared a short, but sweet tribute to their favorite actress. Standing in a circle, they removed their bright pink hats and threw them in the air, much as Moore so famously did during her show's memorable opener.

Although she played a fictional associate producer rather than appearing on the news herself, Moore arguably paved the path for such influential figures as Samantha Bee. She inspired many women who previously assumed that there just wasn't a place for them in the newsroom. Yes, it's worth noting that she eventually became an avowed conservative and skeptical of the feminist movement, but her previous encouragement of women in the workforce cannot be forgotten.

Full Frontal's brief tribute to Mary Tyler Moore reminded us how far we've come since Moore first made a name for herself as Laura Petrie. The episode as a whole, however, was a reminder of how much further we have to go. But with inspiring women such as Bee leading the charge — and paying homage to those who came before — the future is bright for women in America.

New study will have even hardcore skeptics embracing mindful meditation

$
0
0

The concepts of mindfulness and meditation may seem super New Agey-y and hippy-dippy to those who haven't embraced the practice, but a new study shows evidence that mindful meditation can have a seriously positive impact on your health — especially if you have high levels of stress.

If you're a skeptic of mediation, don't worry. You don't have to be able to bend yourself into a pretzel shape or abandon your loud, rational mind forever. It just takes a little bit of time every day to learn how to center yourself and reap the benefits (Psychology Today provides a good how-to here). And even better, this new study actually does provide cold, hard evidence that mindfulness meditation does amazing things for you.

More: I thought meditation was woo-woo, until it helped me get sober

In fact, the whole reason associate professor of psychiatry at Georgetown University Medical Center, Dr. Elizabeth Hoge, and her team set out on their research was to quiet skeptics. In the study, which is now published in Psychiatry Research, anxious people who took a mindfulness course reacted to stress better and had a lower hormonal and inflammatory response than people who didn't practice mindfulness.

Even more benefits than alleviated stress

In addition the recent findings that meditation can help alleviate stress, a 2006 study based in Australia lauded the potential of mindfulness to help manage the symptoms of both mental and physical problems. Another 2016 study tentatively suggested that mindfulness can be a helpful strategy to promote the well-being and academic achievement of final year high school students. Other studies have found that mindfulness techniques help reduce binge eating and help people to reinterpret situations in order to regulate the emotional impacts.

Have we piqued your interest yet?

Of course, a bunch of studies don't necessarily make it easier for you to find the time or effort to actually meditate — particularly when it is very difficult to see the positive effects of such an exercise straight away.

In part, that’s the point. In mindfulness meditation your awareness is on the background noise of your existence, not necessarily on the value or meaning of it. Non-judgement is central, and thus, when you start evaluating your experience, you’re no longer doing it.

More: I tried finding myself at a luxe meditation studio

This is a big problem for people who prefer to gauge benefits as they go. How do you know it’s working for you when you’re told you can’t judge it? The problem is compounded by the fact that mindfulness is not easy — especially for people who are constantly busy. Mindfulness might be stressful sometimes. It can also be deflating, tiring and otherwise unpleasant. But the unpleasantness is part of a process, just like the pain of forming a callous when you’re starting to learn guitar.

Getting started

There's no doubt about it, starting a meditation practice is intimidating.

Routine helps. Find a good time in your day, set a phone reminder, and consistently do it just as you would always brush your teeth before bed. It takes a while to form better habits, but once they're set, it becomes much easier.

While it's important to stick to the commitment of mindfulness, self-care shouldn't be a chore. There's a difference between a reluctance to practice each day and full-blown dreading. Meditative practice should not add to your stress levels, so putting it at a good time and doing it in a way where you could, at some point, conceivably look forward to it, is ideal.

If the idea of meditation doesn’t work for you for whatever reason, that’s OK. Meditation is not the only way to practice mindfulness. You can practice it by walking, playing a simple game, or even eating. Coloring is likewise a popular option. There are also many different mindfulness meditation programs and apps you can choose from, so try a few and see what makes you feel most comfortable.

How to tell when it's working

Nobody suggests that it is advisable to be in a state of mindfulness at all times. Evaluation and reflection on past experiences — including the experience of mindfulness itself — is important. But in order to give the activity a chance, it is likewise important to suspend judgement and keep an open mind, at least for the time being. Your evaluation of mindfulness is best placed after a few months of practice.

By practicing, then waiting, we can eliminate the cyclic trap of skeptical overthinking. The evidence base is good, so you try it. Your experience isn't great, so you stop and question the study's validity. Stop the wheel! Trust the peer review process until you've given yourself a good chance.

Here are some ways you can tell if it is working for you a few months down the road:

  • You find it easier to focus on tasks.
  • You feel less restless in situations you find boring, like waiting for a bad movie to end, waiting for your turn to speak in a conversation, taking time to get to a destination, etc.
  • When travelling to a familiar place (such as work, the grocery store or a relative’s house) you notice new things about your environment and you aren’t as likely to forget chunks of your journey.
  • When you have unpleasant thoughts or emotions, you feel less consumed by them. You have a greater awareness of how the thoughts will pass.
  • You generally have a better mood.

The profound benefits of mindfulness can be accessible to even the most skeptical, as long as you are willing to suspend judgement for short periods of time to actually undertake the practice. Eventually, your need for evidence may be satiated with your own long-term experiences.

5 tips to minimize your dog’s shedding

$

Get your dog ready for the catwalk

Grooming won’t decrease the amount of hair that actually comes loose from your dog’s body — and strictly defined, that’s what shedding is — but it will give you a better handle on reducing the amount of it that ends up in your environment.

Whether you do your own grooming or you take your dog to a professional, regular bathing and brushing removes loose hairs from your dog’s coat and keeps them in the dog brush or the sink drain (note to self: clean sink drain after bathing hairy dog). Remember to always rinse for at least 10 minutes in order to completely remove any trace of shampoo, which can leave your dog’s skin dry and itchy. And don’t bathe more than once a month unless your dog winds up on the wrong end of a mud puddle since it can strip his skin of the oils that keep it shiny and healthy.

More: 10 non-shedding dog breeds your black clothing will thank you for

Make sure your dog is healthy

Nearly every dog sheds some, but when your dog sheds so much that the extra hair starts to resemble a second, less interactive dog, it’s time to see the veterinarian.

What types of diseases cause excessive shedding? Hormonal diseases like hypothyroidism (subnormally active thyroid gland, and thus, metabolism) and Cushing’s disease (overactive adrenal gland) can cause loss of hair or a coat that looks dull and dry. These diseases usually produce hair loss that occurs in a symmetrical pattern on the trunk of the body.

External parasite infestations can cause hair loss too. Mite infestations, also known as mange, attack the hair follicles underneath the surface of the skin, causing hair loss and often itchiness and infection. Severe flea infestations, the fungus ringworm and environmental allergies can also cause hair loss.

Especially if your dog’s hair loss is patchy and there’s itching and scabbing to go along with it, see your veterinarian to figure out if a medical problem is the underlying cause.

Feed the best diet available

There’s good medical evidence that omega-3 fatty acids help to repair the skin barrier that is often damaged in allergic individuals. Many researchers believe that even “normal” dogs benefit greatly from routine supplementation with omega-3 fats in the form of fish oil capsules or liquid.

The type of food you feed your dog also has an impact on the quality of his coat. Low-quality foods can contribute to a dry, brittle coat, which increases breaking of hair and thus, shedding. Make sure you purchase a high-quality diet that’s formulated for your dog’s specific stage of life — puppy, adult or senior.

Encourage slurping noises

Scientists tell us that our bodies are 80 percent water, and our canine companions are no different. Proper hydration is essential for healthy everything, including skin and hair or fur.

Some dogs seem to love to lap water, while others are reluctant and occasional sippers. Adding canned food to your dog’s diet can dramatically increase the amount of water he gets since most of them are around 70 percent water. You can also add a bit of low-sodium chicken broth to the water bowl and change it daily to keep it fresh to encourage drinking.

Choose a breed or mix that is low-shedding

Some dog breeds are naturally low-shedding. Poodles are perhaps the most well-known for this desirable trait, but many terrier breeds also don’t shed much. And even mixes of these breeds often retain this trait. The “doodle” hybrids — including labradoodles and goldendoodles — combine heavy shedders like the Labrador and the golden retriever with poodles, and the resulting dogs either don’t shed or shed very little. And it seems with each generation that is removed from the original purebred mating pair, the shedding continues to become less and less.

If you really want to be assured of having a dog that doesn’t shed, look into the Mexican hairless (also called the nearly unspellable and unpronounceable “Xoloitzcuintli”) or the Chinese crested breeds.

Mary Tyler Moore was more than a TV show's theme song — she was a feminist icon

In remembering one of the greats, I think it's necessary that we take a moment to unpack just how we're remembering her. I'm talking about, of course, Mary Tyler Moore, who died at age 80 on Wednesday, January 26. Moore is being remembered and honored primarily for her contributions to television and to feminist portrayals of women in the media. This is, as you might expect, laudatory and entirely accurate.

More: Mary Tyler Moore and I both made it on our own

Moore was an innovator. She has been cited as a woman who inspired other women, who was eternally optimistic, and a person to whom we could look for guidance. But it seems that the one thing people are choosing to cite when they honor her — in articles, tweets, Instagrams, you name it — is an incredibly pithy phrase that she didn't even say nor would be an accurate representation of Moore.

Remembering Mary Tyler Moore Tweet

Remembering Mary Tyler Moore Tweet

"Who turns the world on with her smile?" is one of the opening lyrics to the theme song "Love Is All Around" from The Mary Tyler Moore Show. The song itself is relatively problematic because it reduces a show about a single working woman focused on her career to a song about a woman bolstered by the constancy and universality of love. It was antithetical to the show's actual plot line and now, it feels a bit too outdated.

But that lyric has been transformed into "She turned the world on with her smile" in headlines and captions in the hours following Moore's passing. Somehow, we're unconsciously keeping an outdated, sexist, reductive sentiment alive, well, and in association with a woman who worked to defeat that trend. The Mary Tyler Moore Show and Moore herself made for some of the most feminist television programming of the 1970s; can't we think of a more accurate way to honor her?

More: Full Frontal with Samantha Bee had the perfect tribute to Mary Tyler Moore

Moore tackled the wage gap on her show, was one of the first women to wear pants on television (so much so that the Dick Van Dyke Show producers wanted to limit how often she did it), she played against type, she spoke about her alcoholism and effectively chipped away at her "good girl" image (which only makes her more empowering, honest, and relatable to women).

Let's not forget that she played a single woman on television. No previous divorces. No messy break-ups. No children. On her own television show, Moore simply played a single woman dedicated to her career. Airing at a time when the Second Wave of feminism was sweeping the nation, Moore made sure to transfer those feminist values to her show.

Mary Tyler Moore Pants On TV

So perhaps it's a bit easier now to see why reducing a woman down to a physical attribute as a way to pay tribute to her literally monumental legacy can be a bit irksome. Yes, Moore was a beautiful woman. But is that all? Is she really just a smiling gal, tossing her beret up into that air as she stands on a busy New York City street corner? Not at all.

More: Mary Tyler Moore's legacy is one of love and living a happy, imperfect life

So, I'm going to whip up a few captions for you right now that you can use when paying your respects to Moore going forward. They'll audience-friendly and accurately describe her, not just her smile.

Mary Tyler Moore, eternal pants-wearer, will be missed.

Mary Tyler Moore, fictional single woman and real life badass, will forever be an icon to me.

Who can turn the world on with her tireless work ethic and devotion to charitable causes? Mary Tyler Moore.

If you think I'm not gonna fight to close the wage gap in Mary Tyler Moore's honor, you're dead wrong, my dude.

And now, if you'll excuse me, I think a binge-watch of The Mary Tyler Moore Show is in order.

Gigi Hadid, Bella Hadid and their mother, The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills' Yolanda Foster, have been household names for years, and now their little brother, Anwar Hadid, is ready for his turn in the limelight.

Anwar is the youngest son of Foster and her ex-husband, real estate developer Mohamed Hadid. We know this is going to be shocking, but Anwar is drop-dead gorgeous. Naturally.

Here's a little more about him.

1. He's destined to be a supermodel

When it comes to the genetic lottery, the Hadid family has hit the jackpot. It was pretty much written in the stars that Anwar would become a professional model at some point, and his destiny was fulfilled this year when he was signed on as the new face of Hugo Boss.

It's his first major campaign, and Anwar will appear in Hugo Boss' spring 2017 ads, according to The Hollywood Reporter.

2. He's got a hot new girlfriend

Anwar recently went public with his relationship with actress Nicola Peltz on Instagram, so I guess you could say things are getting serious.

"Honestly, he is an angel," Peltz — who you might recognize from Bates Motel and Transformers: Age of Extinction — told Women's Wear Daily. "He's such an amazing person... He comes from such an amazing family. Gigi and Bella are so, so sweet. I just love his family so much."

"I want to be an entrepreneur or work in the music business," he told Seventeen magazine in 2015. "My dad, who's a real estate developer, came from nothing, so his life is my model for self-made success. It's important for me to find happiness within my own possibilities."

5. He's a tall drink of water

Scarlett Johansson's getting divorced – but what about the gourment popcorn store?!

In a time when celebrity custody battles are long and bitter, we have just one question following the news of Scarlett Johannson's divorce from her French husband of 2 years, Romain Dauriac: Who will get custody of the gourmet popcorn shop?

More: Here's an essential roundup of Scarlett Johansson's best musical performances

ScarJo and Dauriac opened Yummy Pop, their fancy popcorn store, in Paris late last year. They sell bags of both sweet and savory snacks, with flavors like maple, chocolate strawberry, olive oil and Parmesan —basically, this is the Mecca of the world's most underrated snack.

More: John Travolta, Scarlett Johansson got weirdly intimate at the Oscars (PHOTO)

Considering that a source told People magazine that Johannson and Dauriac split up last summer, and Yummy Pop didn't open until October, it seems like they might be keeping their mid-divorce shit together enough to keep the business going so far. Even though they had reportedly been separated for months already, the last time they were photographed together was at Yummy Pop's grand opening.

Then again, Johannson was still wearing her wedding ring when she was seen at an event just last month. The first time she was seen without it was at last weekend's Women's March. It's entirely possible that that source doesn't know anything and the split actually happened more recently, and if so, what's going to happen to Yummy Pop?!

Then there's the worst-case scenario: The strain of running an extremely popular, genius popcorn store together is actually what caused ScarJo and her hubby to call it quits on their marriage. In that case, things don't bode well for Yummy Pop's future. Insert all the crying emojis here.

Why there's been a major surge in IUD requests

$

Since the start of the new administration (as in less, than a week ago), we've already seen swift action taken threatening the future of women's health care and reproductive rights. With the potential repeal of the Affordable Care Act, it’s a frightening reality to face — over 20 million people could lose their health insurance.

For women and girls, it means losing basic services including mammograms, cancer screenings, STD testing, regular checkups and birth control — much of which has been generously provided by Planned Parenthood to over 2.5 million people each year. The ongoing threat to women’s health care has clearly brought women and girls together in coalition with one another, but this concern is not simply a trend.

More: A roundup of all the ways your health rights have been jeopardized this week

Inside the gynecologist’s office, the fear of no longer having access to basic health care has manifested, and many women and girls have been seeking long-term contraception to protect themselves through a Trump presidency.

Women have outwardly expressed anxiety over the possible loss of their health insurance, creating a different dynamic within obstetrician and gynecologist offices according to Dr. Kelly Culwell, chief medical officer at WomanCare Global.

“The election has ignited conversations about women’s rights — particularly, women’s sexual health and access to affordable contraceptive options for all women,” she told SheKnows. “There’s been a surge in urgency in social media among women rushing to get long-term birth control, fueled by concerns that the Trump administration might end Obamacare provisions that require insurers to cover intrauterine devices and other contraception.”

More: No, Republicans: Defunding Planned Parenthood definitely won't save money

Culwell, along with Dr. Elizabeth West, an OB-GYN at the Miller Children’s & Women’s Hospital Long Beach, noted that there has been a significant increase in patients looking for long-acting contraceptives — IUDs in particular.

“Immediately after the election, there was a surge of patients coming into the office to discuss contraception and requesting IUD insertion,” West told SheKnows. "I think many of those patients had uncertainty about the future of reproductive health care coverage and wanted to ensure that their IUDs were placed before the change in administration.”

Although this harrowing presidency has placed urgency on women and girls to seek long-term contraception, Culwell encourages women to discuss the full range of contraceptive options available to them with their doctors. Utilizing the safe space within our doctor’s care, asking questions and opening the door to assess which birth control option may be right for oneself is more significant than ever before.

Nonetheless, to prepare for the future, IUD insertion has skyrocketed by 900 percent at Planned Parenthood alone.

More: Kentucky lawmaker tells women that unplanned pregnancies are "opportunities"

“Since the election, we have seen an unprecedented surge in support and questions about access to health care and birth control,” Planned Parenthood’s Southern New England President and CEO Judy Tabar told SheKnows. “There’s been a significant increase in appointments scheduled for birth control, with demand for IUDS increasing by more than 900 percent across the country. These spikes illustrate just how important the Affordable Care Act’s birth control benefit has been for women to access the birth control method of their choice.”

Another contributing factor is that IUDs have been increasing in popularity over the past several years already due to its contraceptive reliability, safer design and lack of complications following insertion, according to Dr. G. Thomas Ruiz, an OB-GYN at MemorialCare Medical Group in Fountain Valley, California. He added that both hormonal and nonhormonal IUDs are more effective in preventing unplanned pregnancies than tubal sterilization.

The value of the reproductive care provided by the Affordable Care Act and through Planned Parenthood is reflected by the furor that came in response to the ominous fate of repealing essential services for women. To minimize and eliminate these necessary services would be a disservice to millions of Americans and would further escalate the anxieties presented across our nation, leaving many without reliable and affordable options for managing one’s health.

Planned Parenthood plans to face this by continuing “to fight for their patients and the care they need,” Tabar said. “No one should have their basic health care taken away.”

West echoed the sentiment, noting that any major changes in women’s health care will not come into effect immediately at the beginning of the new presidential administration.

“Patients should feel confident that we can continue to provide them their best care and offer a breadth of contraception options throughout the next year,” she said.

Ultimate woke bae Shia LaBeouf was arrested during anti-Trump protest

Polarizing opinion time! Shia LaBeouf has always been the kind of genius that people just don't understand, and anyone who thinks otherwise can fight me.

More: Is this Shia LaBeouf's latest head-scratcher?

Proving he's the ultimate woke bae right now, LaBeouf has an ongoing art project right now in protest of President Donald Trump — and it's going to be running for all four years of the Cheeto-in-Chief's term. It's a camera set up outside the Museum of the Moving Image, and people are encouraged to stand in front of it and chant "He will not divide us" into the camera, which is continuously live streaming online. Come on, you know you love this idea.

It started on Inauguration Day, so here we are, six days in, and, uh... LaBeouf got arrested. Police told reporters that he assaulted another protester at his own protest art project, even though the man he assaulted was also anti-Trump. The police report says that LaBeouf "pulled his scarf, scratched his face, and then punched him." LaBeouf was arrested around 1:30 a.m. this motning, and since everything was being live streamed, yes there's video of him being taken into police custody.

He was charged with misdemeanor assault and released in time to be back in front of the camera before noon.

Listen, LaBeouf can't help it if others just don't understand him. And, honestly, that guy was lucky he encountered LaBeouf at a crowded protest, and not while he was lost in the woods with a dead cell phone, because we all know how that ends.

While the future of health care is precarious, and reproductive rights are being taken away at an alarming rate, we have no choice but to be our own advocates. Luckily, technology is advancing in ways that make managing health more accessible. There’s an app for practically everything these days, but some of them are making a difference in the history of reproductive health.

Taking a few minutes out of your day can help thousands of others who are suffering from a similar reproductive disease, or it can help you understand your own condition. Some of them offer actual doctor visits through telemedicine, which can be very helpful when a physical office visit isn’t accessible. Even a simple daily reminder can change the way you take control of your health.

What to Do If Your House-Trained Dog Starts Peeing Indoors

$
0
0

If your dog who has been house-trained for years suddenly started peeing inside, you're not alone. My 15-year-old dog, Mosby, suddenly felt the need to urinate all over the house — and he had me so concerned that I reached out to a dog behaviorist in hopes of some answers.

I explained Mosby's new peeing habit to animal behaviorist Alexis Toriello, emphasizing that I was concerned about incontinence because of Mosby's age. But I also couldn't help but wonder if Mosby was relieving himself inside because we were experiencing snow in a part of the country that hardly ever experiences freezing temperatures.

More: When does dog anxiety become a serious problem?

And Mosby wasn't trying to hide his new defiant behavior, either — he did it right in front of me twice! I had to know what the deal was.

First, see your vet

According to Toriello, the first stop is the vet. You have to eliminate any potential medical issues. Even if your vet doesn't find anything specifically related to incontinence, that doesn't mean there isn't an issue, so it's important to tell your vet everything. There could be an indirect medical cause. Dogs suffering from joint pain may not be able to move around as well. Dogs with reduced eyesight might not be able to get around as well. Even the stress of a medical disorder could cause a behavior change.

If your dog is elderly, it may also be time for a hard truth. "In senior dogs it is most likely a symptom of cognitive decline. Older dogs frequently get confused about where they are, so naturally that would cause them to be confused about where to eliminate — or think they're eliminating in an appropriate place when they're not," Toriello explains.

What if it's not medical?

If your vet signs off on your pooch's health, it may be a behavioral issue. Changes in your behavior (work schedule, feeding schedule, bedtime, etc.) could stress your dog out. But most people already know that (it would stress us out, too).

If you can't think of anything that's changed, there are potential explanations. It's possible something has changed that you aren't aware of. Toriello notes that your dog could easily be stressed out by the noise from construction during the day (when you're at work and don't know it's going on). Maybe a dog has moved into another apartment or home near you and your dog is uncomfortable.

More: Are we over-vaccinating our pets?

It's also possible your vet missed something. Your vet would likely catch it if it's an issue due to old age or actual incontinence, but did you really tell your vet everything? Even subtle things like the fact that it's going downstairs more slowly than previously or not eating quite as much as it used to? This is the time to think about what you might have missed because it happened slowly over time.

What does behavioral elimination mean?

If your dog suddenly starts peeing or pooping indoors and there's no medical reason, we all tend to think it's "out of spite" or "they're mad at us." Toriello says that's not true. (Dogs are unsurprisingly way less passive-aggro than humans.)

It's true that eliminating in the house or in front of owners can be intended as communication. She explains that "it is not because dogs are feeling anything like guilt or vindictiveness. If it is in fact intended to communicate something, it's probably a call for help — something is up, and an owner's next move should be to try to figure out what's stressing out their dog. Could be a medical problem, could be a new member of the household, could be the inability or unwillingness to go outside in the cold or stand on slippery ice."

She continues, saying, "Sometimes dogs may just eliminate inside... without any intention of communicating to you that something's wrong, or at other times, it seems like they are essentially writing in big bold letters, 'HELLO, THERE'S SOMETHING WRONG HERE!' Either way, dogs don't do things just to be jerks, so responding to your dog as though they're trying to get back at you for something is not going to solve the problem for either of you."

For those who are wondering, Mosby has no new medical issues, despite his age. He still struggles with joint pain (nothing new), which may be a contributing factor, but now that Texas weather is back to normal (no snow or ice), so are his bathroom habits.
