Go home, Jill Zarin, you're drunk

Jill Zarin, formerly of The Real Housewives of New York fame, is headed to Washington, D.C. for Donald Trump's inauguration and, you guys, she is so excited about it.

More: How to prepare your kids for the inauguration protests

Apparently Zarin and her husband are old friends of the Trump family and that landed them personal invites to the ceremony. She posted some pics on Instagram of the invitations she received.

"Dad is out of woods and I’m packing for D.C.! This is my first inauguration. I am going as an AMERICAN to support democracy (and hey I got invited. ..!)," she wrote.

Naturally, because Trump is a little bit divisive or something, Zarin's post drew all kinds of trolling from her followers.

"You're ignorant. Unfollowing," one wrote. "Well someone needs to fill those seats. Trump is paying for ads on FB and Twitter because he has an underwhelming amount of people attending LOL," another said. "By the way Jill please make sure you cover up your lady parts. The president elect is a sexual assaulter," another follower commented.

Zarin clearly got tired of all the hate, because when she posted another photo of the same invitations for some reason, she turned off comments.

"Here is the other in case curious. If you want to unfollow me … bye bye!" she wrote on the second photo. "I’m sick of bullies. I don’t agree with some things but running away won’t change it. Be there.. show up… use the system to communicate. But don’t you dare make me feel guilty for going to see OUR country at work."

One Instagram post bragging about going to an event that almost no one wants to attend is one thing. But two? Has anyone told her that she just got a personal invite to what's basically just going to be a really shitty concert?

I'm a librarian and here's what we need to get clear about 'fake news'

$

I'm a college librarian by day and lately there has been lots of talk in my library world about bias in the news.

From this Pew Report Survey, which was conducted in Feb/March of 2016, it was found that only 22% of American trust their local news and 18% have trust in national news organizations; Close to 75% think news organizations are biased. So, I know you feel me friends. What news is real?

This is what I do. This is what I teach college students to do. I just want to help you find facts — the real news. So if you do too, I just thought we should talk.

More: What happens when personal values collide with company policy?

We can agree almost uniformly that great news sources that have very little bias or manipulation whether you are standing left or right of center are: Wall Street Journal, BBC, and The Economist. In the middle, but not specifically agreed upon are: Christian Science Monitor, Associated Press, C-Span, Polifact, USA Today, and online, the Skimm.

Not all of these are super-smart academic, hard to read papers. Some are given for free in your hotel, at the newsstand or are free online. Great news is still a possibility no matter what the recent headlines may tell you.

I think in light of trying to walk the line of “just the facts” please, I am leaning toward papers that do just that. I don’t want to work so hard every time I pick up the paper just to get my facts about what is happening in the world.

More: I wish society didn't fear me for being a black American Muslim woman

So many news outlets lean left or right, and that is fine as long as you realize that you are reading articles from a particular stance. And there are some that are sort of left or right, some that are far left or right, some that are satire, and some that are just bat-$@ crazy. Like, I don’t believe in science crazy. Sorry if that is you.

Let’s be careful not to confuse “fake” information with bias. Fake is fake. Bias is leading, but often based in truth. With biased news, perhaps accurate information has been used in the wrong context or manipulated to suit the message, however, this doesn’t make it “fake.” We need to stop calling news we don’t agree with “fake.” And whether something is fake news depends on what type of news it is supposed to be. Is it supposed to sway you in one direction? Is it supposed to be satire or comedy (like the truthiness of Stephen Colbert)?

No matter where you stand, let’s just back up and actually take our news and decide what it is: A lie? Truth? Or somewhere in between? And then let’s talk to our kids, because just between you and me and the rest of higher education… they don’t really know this. They will retweet and tumbl and share what they agree with and then use it in their papers. Facebook and social media is where most young people get their news from, and it isn’t on the accepted list for “real news” folks. Let's clarify for them what fake news might mean. It is worth a discussion.

Here are the 44 people speaking at the Women's March

Yesterday, President Barack Obama gave his final press conference. During the hourlong speech, he addressed pretty much everything relevant in our nation, and at the end, he discussed how he’s dealt with speaking with his daughters about the election and what’s going to happen next. It was powerful and worth a watch — or a read — for sure.

Though he’s on his way out, his remarks only whet our appetite for more hope, more eloquence, more strength and thoughtful analysis and lifting-up. Good news: That’s pretty much all there is on the menu at the Women’s March on Washington this Saturday, and since the speakers at the rally were announced yesterday, we now have a better idea of what’s in store. Spoiler alert: It’s going to be awesome, and if you’re going (or watching from afar), you’ll likely be rapt.

Below is a full list of the 44 speakers at the march, but we’ve picked a few highlights from the lineup — people who we’re especially stoked to hear and whose words we plan to etch in our minds (or our bodies, if you’re into tattoos) for at least the next four years and possibly forever.

More: What to do if you encounter counter-protesters at the Women’s March on Washington

1. Cecile Richards

Planned Parenthood is in serious trouble, and no amount of LGBTQ+ dance parties outside Mike Pence’s house is going to stanch the flow of blood (pun intended) from the women’s health organization. Richards, who is the president of the Planned Parenthood Federation of America, will likely address the nonprofit’s next steps and plans of attack, and we wait with bated breath to hear what she has to say.

2. Janet Mock

Janet Mock came out publicly as a trans woman in Marie Claire in 2011 and has been killing it for years as a fierce writer and editor. We’re particularly interested in her remarks because she is so eloquent — her courageous memoir, Redefining Realness, was a powerful tome on growing up trans, and her columns and essays are always thoughtful and smart. She’s an important figure in the field of transgender rights, and we imagine she’ll share some thought-provoking words.

3. Gloria Steinem

Really, her name speaks for itself. But in case you’ve been living under a rock for the past 82 years, Steinem is basically synonymous with the feminist movement of the 1960s, and she hasn’t backed down or lost any steam in recent years. As she put it in a recent interview with The Guardian, “I’m going to live to 100. I’m never going to retire. Would I retire from life? This is my life!”

Steinem also had some very real words about the president-elect (alas, today is the last day we can say that). “I have never in my lifetime seen a president who was such an egotist,” she said. “He’s a sociopath, a racist, a sexual predator. There are great dangers because he is dealing with heads of state.” Yeah, we can’t wait to hear what she has to say this Saturday. Also, until recently, she was offering rides to D.C., because she’s a badass.

4. Sybrina Fulton, Maria Hamilton, Gwen Carr, and Lucia McBath

The mothers of Trayvon Martin, Dontre Hamilton, Eric Garner and Jordan Davis, respectively, these four women come with a message that we all need to hear. It will be heartbreaking, it will be eye-opening, it will give you goose bumps — and hopefully, it’ll wake you the eff up.

5. Angela Davis

This political activist and champion of black rights was a major civil rights-era heavyweight and co-founded Critical Resistance, a prisoner rights organization working to dismantle the prison industrial complex. Back in 1970, James Baldwin himself wrote an open letter to “My Sister, Miss Angela Davis.” Now, some 47 years later, the 72-year-old Davis is still standing — and still prepared to fight.

We asked experts for their best advice on changing your career path

For years, I woke up each morning with the nagging sense that something was... off. While most of my life seemed to "fit," I couldn't shake the feeling that maybe I was missing a crucial piece of the puzzle altogether. Sound familiar? If so, the idea of leaving your current career has probably crept into your thoughts on more than one occasion.

More: 30 excellent quotes from powerful women about overcoming failure

Suffice it to say, changing career paths is not for the faint of heart. It entails undoing a lot of what you've spent many years trying to do and abandoning a sense of security. But it can be done, and certainly with more grace and finesse than I managed to accomplish when I left my 9 to 5 office job.

To find out how, we sat down with digital lifestyle expert® Mario Armstrong and his wife and business partner Nicole Hunter. They share about their personal journey and the advice they have for others considering a career jump.

A modern American power couple, Armstrong and Hunter's story started as many love stories do — in college. Today, Armstrong enjoys a career as an Emmy Award-winning TV host and digital lifestyle expert, and Hunter is the CEO of the couple's own thriving company. And both are spokespeople for the Invisalign® brand, which offers the most advanced teeth straightening technology in the world.

But if you had asked either one of them eight years ago where they would be now, you might have gotten a very different answer.

Of transitioning into their current careers, Hunter admits, "It was a slow process... one that took eight years to happen. We both were working our 9 to 5 jobs and Mario was doing a radio show on the side for free. So, for eight years, we were really building our brand — without even knowing it. Mario's knack to teach people personal technology really caught on. When his schedule consisted of recurring roles on regional TV news, NPR and local FM radio shows, we knew we had something special. So we took a leap of faith and started our new career together."

More: I threw away my New Year's resolutions for a dreams and schemes list

The couple, who has always been very forward-focused, could tell it was time for a new career path when they felt their professional growth had stalled. "I wanted to move from just helping a small group of people to leveraging my knowledge to a huge mass of people on a major level," Armstrong explained.

So they made a leap into the unknown, and fortunately, landed on their feet — thanks in large part to their sheer determination. They've had to make sacrifices. They've leaned on each other for support. And the life they have to show for it? Well, it speaks for itself.

Whenever the opportunity presents itself, this enterprising couple tries to pass along the secrets to their success. In fact, Armstrong and Hunter have a few tips they like to share with people considering a transition:

  • Have a vision of what you want to do
  • Have a business plan
  • Be debt free; don’t go into new business with debt
  • Make sure you have clients before you “open your doors”

In addition, the couple divulged the five guiding principles that have allowed them to move forward in their life while inspiring others.

The first principle, Armstrong elaborated, is mindset. "Being mindful means to be aware of how we feel about ourselves and the ability to fight the inner critic. Focus on a positive mindset through meditation and self-caring, which can transfer to being empathetic, supportive and loving to others," he said.

For Armstrong, this particular principle proved to be the first step toward tackling a personal barrier: his smile.

"It’s important to be able to look in the mirror and be happy about what you are seeing — that changes how you talk to yourself and how you set your positive mindset," he said. "I neglected my teeth for a while. I noticed my front teeth shifting, which became more obvious to me in the mirror and in pictures. When it started to become part of my inner critic, I decided it was time to start paying attention to how my crooked smile was impacting my aspirations."

For Armstrong and Hunter, that meant opting for Invisalign treatment so their smiles and confidence matched the way they visualized themselves and their success.

"When you devote your own time, effort and energy, you will get the pay off or outcome you're looking for and this is the mindset I applied towards my own Invisalign treatment," Armstrong advised. "When you make an investment in yourself, you should weigh the difference between what seems like an expensive risk versus the long term benefits. In my case, I chose a brand with a proven track record of success to help me reach my goal and change my life for the better."

The second principle, he continued, is passion. "Find what it is that excites you. You will find your way when you know your why. Being a better human is identifying what you’re great at and being able to share it with others."

More: 5 girl bosses who have taken the pet industry by storm

Ultimately, Armstrong found that his smile was a major motivating factor in his life, saying, "A smile is the most important natural asset that anyone has to express their passion... A smile is so powerful, it can open up new opportunities and provides a sense of individual spirit."

Which brings us to the third guiding principle the couple relies on: visualization. "Work to really see success in all facets of life. How do you see yourself when you're with your kids, performing your work or having fun with your hobby? How is your inner self reflected in your outward appearance? Visualization is a powerful tool to determine how close (or far) you are to achieving your goals and seeing what may be standing in the way," Armstrong said.

In fact, the realization that Armstrong and Hunter's smiles didn't match their visualization of themselves brought them to a major breakthrough in their lives — and to the fourth guiding principle.

"Establishing an internal belief system is key," he said. "You need to actually believe in yourself and your ability to do that one thing you’re after. And you have to have the same confidence in those you choose to associate with. Make sure to surround yourself with people that you believe in and believe in you too."

It's after these first four guiding principles are achieved that the real work begins, Armstrong cautions.

"The last principle is the most difficult but also the most critical… taking action. Unfortunately, a lot of people can do the other four principles, but without action, you will never reach success," he said. "Overcome fear by trusting that if you are following your principles, action is the right next step to reach your potential."

As with all good things, though, there are always caveats. "We did all of the above, but nothing can prepare you for the unknown," Armstrong said. "So, no matter what happens, you have to have grit, guts and determination. We had many difficult times, but we kept believing in ourselves and in our vision."

Cuba Gooding Jr. and Sara Kapfer are divorcing after 22 years of marriage

Say, "hello" to one of the first celeb divorces of 2017. Cuba Gooding Jr. and his wife Sara Kapfer are calling it quits after 22 years of marriage.

Is there anyone left in Hollywood that's still together at this point?

More: O.J. Simpson's creepy obsession with Kim Kardashian

In all fairness, Gooding and Kapfer have been legally separated since 2014 so the divorce doesn't come as too much of a shock to those who have been following their relationship.

But it seemed like there was still hope for these two when Gooding did an interview in March 2016 with Steve Harvey on the Steve Harvey Show.

"Officially I'm still married," Gooding explained. "It's just you know how some marriages go. Sometimes you take a break or two. All I'm saying is my life is what it is right now. I took her to see a movie the other day. We've got kids man, we've got to keep this together."

More: The People v. O.J. Simpson highlights huge problem in the justice system

Gooding and Kapfer have three children together.

TMZ is reporting that with the divorce, Gooding is asking for joint legal and physical custody of their 11-year-old daughter, Piper. Their two sons are now over the age of 18. He is also willing to support Kapfer with spousal support, but Gooding is asking to keep all earnings since Kapfer filed for separation in 2014, which means she wouldn't be entitled to his American Horror Story or American Crime Story earnings.

This is one Hollywood couple we were definitely rooting for, especially considering Kapfer and Gooding were high school sweethearts.

Gooding has yet to comment publicly about the divorce news, but he and Kapfer were most recently spotted at the Weinstein Golden Globes after party together.

Purity rings will fly off the shelves after tonight's Bringing Up Bates episode

Katie Bates celebrated her 16th birthday tonight on Bringing Up Bates – so naturally, seeing that it's a family tradition, Gil and Kelly presented Katie with a purity ring. The little ceremony was so beautiful it made me want to give rings to my unborn children one day.

More: Check out Bringing Up Bates' Whitney and Erin Bates' post-baby bodies

The idea behind it is to encourage their girls to stay pure until marriage. Just to be clear, when you are pure you are "not mixed or adulterated with any other substance or material." Like sex. At least, that's what the internet says and the internet is always right. Anyways, the boys are expected to do the same (no sexism here), they just don't get the fancy bling. I think they should renegotiate those terms. Rules without rings? Boo. The Jonas brothers got rings. Why shouldn't the Bates brothers? But that's neither here nor there and in the end, purity rings are about the meaning behind them.

While I don't consider myself as conservative as the Bates family, I think a purity ring is a beautiful idea and the symbolism behind it likely differs from family to family. The Bates family expects their girls to wear it until marriage – only swapping it out for a wedding ring. But for me – when I gift them to my unborn children – the purity ring will be a sentimental way to have the sex talk and encourage them to wait until they're ready.

More: Screw Tinder — let's give Bringing Up Bates courtships a try

"This is valuable," Gil said as he presented Katie with her ring. "But your purity and your life is way more valuable than any ring or trinket or anything in the whole world."

Every girl in the Bates family agreed that time with their parents, in which they were presented with their ring, was really special because it meant that they got to have that deeper discussion with their parents.

"It's a commitment," Kelly Jo said of the ring.

Katie, for her part, brought the jokes for the evening, "Hey, no worries," she assured her parents. "I'm only 16. No worries. Twenty-five's a great age."

More: The Bates family motto is one we should all adopt

Watch out, Katie — 25 will come quicker than you think.

Did the Bates make you reconsider the sex talk with your kids?

Long before Kim Kardashian was Kim Kardashian West, she dated Nick Cannon

A decade ago, Kim Kardashian West (long before the "West" was added to her name) and Nick Cannon dated, and on Thursday, Jan. 19, Cannon decided to remind us all of that fact.

More: Things are getting serious between Nick Cannon and TLC's Chilli

Taking to Instagram, Cannon shared a throwback photo of himself, Kardashian West, Lil' Kim and Paris Hilton, which he chose to caption with a simple "#tbt Whoa!!!" — and whoa is right!

Cannon also shared a second photo, this one of himself, Lil' Kim and Kanye West (who we all know now happens to be married to Cannon's ex-girlfriend, Kim Kardashian West). Cannon captioned the photo with "#tbt Same Night!!! Could it have.... Nah!!! LOL."

Kardashian West and Cannon dated for about five months between September of 2006 and January of 2007, and according to Us Weekly, they split because of her sex tape with Ray J. But surprisingly, the reactions to the photo have had very little to do with the fact that Cannon and Kardashian West hooked up in the past. People appear to be far more interested in how much the appearances of the women in the photo have changed over the years.

"Wow that's when Kim was super natural and very pretty," plumeria036 commented.

Carmensandiego_77 also commented on the photo with "Right whoa...kim k looks very different now in the face."

"Nick you haven't changed a bit...you looked handsome then and more handsome now....as for the rest...hmmm. Paris still look the same," cdegoddess shared. And beautifulj_1 seemed to share the same thoughts, writing, "@nickcannon got jokes today!!! Only you and Paris Hilton look the same. Plastic surgery is the devil!!!!"

There's no denying Kardashian West does look different now, but to be fair, she was only 26 in the photo, so her looks and style are bound to have changed with time (and it's been 10 years).

Marriage Boot Camp's Dillon King ditches Amy Duggar for a new dance partner

Dillon King has been working through his condescending tone on Marriage Boot Camp, but I don't really think that's his problem. Rather, I think Dillon has an issue with speaking before he thinks through the consequences of his words.

More: Things look bad for Tara Reid and Dean May's Marriage Boot Camp future

In a SheKnows exclusive sneak peek of the upcoming episode, Dillon discovers his dancing feet when the couples take a ballroom class, but he isn't finding them with his wife, Amy Duggar King.

That isn't his fatal error, though. That comes later when he and Amy are talking to the cameras.

"Renee is amazing," Dillon said, of his dancing partner, Mob Wives star Renee Graziano. The two did indeed have a blast learning the routine together, laughing the whole time as Amy looked on dismayed. "It was nice to just dance with somebody who wasn't critical about anything and followed along."

Mind you, Dillon says this as he's sitting right next to Amy.

"What?" Amy responds immediately, clearly displeased with Dillon's choice of phrasing.

Dillon returns her upset gaze with a look that drips with feelings of "Oh shit."

Not that Amy doesn't need to work on her critical attitude, but Dillon definitely could have phrased that sentence a whole lot better.

Bella and Gigi Hadid's baby brother, 17-year-old Anwar Hadid, clearly has luck when it comes to the ladies. According to E! News, he's dating Nicola Peltz.

But they've been spending a lot of time together recently, and Peltz has even made their relationship social media official. Six days ago, she took to Instagram to share a photo of herself sitting on Anwar's lap.

The photo looks to have been taken from her 22nd birthday (she turned 22 on Jan. 9), and judging by the Snapchat videos that have emerged from the bash, Peltz and Hadid look very much like a couple.

An E! News source shed more light on the relationship, telling the publication, "They are dating. It's a fairly new relationship, but they are really good friends and part of the same group of friends."

Hadid and Peltz have known each other for quite some time and were good friends prior to their relationship turning romantic. E! News speculates that this could be because the pair have a lot in common. Both are pursuing careers in the limelight, with Hadid working as a model (and following in his mother and famous sisters' footsteps) and Peltz as an actress — which, the publication notes has also prepared them for handling such a public relationship.

Michelle and Barack Obama's eldest daughter, Malia Obama, has an interest in the entertainment industry, and the former first daughter has reportedly secured an internship that could potentially help her to build a career in the industry.

More: Malia Obama smoking pot is not a national emergency

According to multiple reports, Obama has landed an internship with famed producer Harvey Weinstein's company, The Weinstein Company. The Hollywood Reporter states that according to a source, Obama is expected to start working in Weinstein's New York office in February — following a vacation with her family in Palm Springs, California.

This is not the first time that Obama's interest in the film world has been made public. Back in 2014, she worked as a production assistant on the CBS series Extant, which starred Halle Berry; and in 2015, she interned on HBO series (and Lena Dunham's brainchild) Girls.

According to The Hollywood Reporter, it's unclear at this time which department Obama will work in while at The Weinstein Company, but a source says it may be in marketing or development.

However, there's no official confirmation with regard to Obama's internship as yet, with Page Six reporting that representatives for neither The Weinstein Company nor Obama got back to them prior to publication of their story on Thursday, Jan. 19.

I don't need to medically transition to prove I'm a man

$
0
0

Certain parts feel more foreign than others, like my breasts and vagina. And then on some days, I feel good about the feminine parts of my body, even if they do look feminine to me.

This constant and complicated flipping back and forth is something that most cisgender folks fail to understand about the trans experience. I know this because when I come out to friends and colleagues, I’m asked “male to female or female to male?” As if there’s no in-between. As if surgery is a goal for every trans person.

More: I'm a transgender woman, but that doesn't mean I have to take what I can get

Personally, I’m very interested in gender-affirming procedures. I want to start taking testosterone at some point in the near future. And I fantasize constantly about having a flat chest and my very own flesh dick. But the reality is this: I’m just not sure enough at this point to do any of these things.

I don’t mean that I’m not sure whether or not I’m a man. That is something that I know and believe deeply. What I don’t know is if I will need to get rid of certain body parts in order to feel like a man (at least when I’m alone with myself).

Generally speaking, I feel dysphoric regarding my breasts, but about a quarter of the time, I love my chest. It’s scary to imagine them not being there on the days that I love them, as well as on the days when I’ve already gotten used to putting up with them.

More: I came out as transgender but still share a bed with my wife

I feel very strongly about wanting my vagina gone, but I fear compromising my sexual health and ability to orgasm. As someone who treasures sex and orgasms so deeply, it would be a huge sacrifice if I had to choose a penis over the ability to climax.

And then there are the costs. There are the concerns about how the hormones will affect my mood disorder. There is the fear that our new president will make it very difficult to transition and make it harder to be a visibly trans man in America. And of course, there’s the fear of permanence with these procedures. I know people who have gotten top or bottom surgery and then changed their mind. What if that happens to me?

So for now, I’ve shelved my medical transition. But every day, I’m reminded of something I don’t normally factor into my decision making with this: what everyone else thinks. Because in order to accept me as a trans man, folks around me need to know I’m actively transitioning.

I get asked constantly if I plan to transition, a question that folks don’t seem to realize is so very personal and uncomfortable. It’s made very obvious to me that I don’t look like the man I am, with the way I’m constantly referred to with “she” and as “Miss.” And so when people find out I’m not transitioning at the moment, the topic gets dropped, and as a result, so do I. Despite the fact that I tell people I’m a trans man, there are no questions about my pronouns. Right back to “she,” “girl,” “Miss” — business as usual.

More: A transgender woman was arrested at Target, but guess who's being blamed

Being erased like this because of how I look makes me feel helpless. More than anything, it makes me feel cornered into speeding up my transition process just so I can finally be treated as and seen as the man that I am.

It seems silly to want to change parts of your body and appearance to seek the validation of others. But when so much of trans people’s survival relies on acknowledgment and acceptance (something that is often few and far between for trans folks with and without mental illness), it seems imperative, even medically necessary, to medically transition.

Deconstructing society and your body and stripping them of their gendered meanings is virtually useless in the end when the majority still sees things as black and white, man and woman.

Vanderpump Rules is never short of drama, but recently that drama has started to spill over onto Twitter.

More: Vanderpump Rules' Stassi Schroeder makes a huge confession about Jax Taylor

The reason? Stassi Schroeder and Kristen Doute have decided to take their issues with former co-star Lala Kent public.

Kent clashed with her co-stars on several occasions, ultimately leading to her announcing that she'd be quitting the Bravo show. But, according to a recent lengthy post that Schroeder shared on Twitter on Jan. 17, that decision could've had something to do with a non-disclosure agreement.

In the post, Schroeder takes aim at Kent for thinking she could "say the most sickening degrading things" about Katie Maloney, her friends on her podcasts, social media and news outlets. She goes on to state that they [the original cast] have been on the show for 5 years and have given it their all, adding that Kent couldn't just come on air and think that the show was hers.

Schroeder then states that Kent handed out non-disclosure agreements, which she claims "is a complete violation of the contracts we all have to sign."

Kent reacted, revealing that she did indeed ask everyone to sign an NDA and the reason being because "being on a reality TV show is one thing. Me being in my safe place and being filmed and posted is another."

Kent also reacted to Schroeder's tweet by reposting it, along with a message explaining how she had apologized and taken accountability.

Chinese New Year is a bright, colorful holiday steeped in tradition — and it's also the perfect opportunity to indulge in some delicious Chinese food.

This year Chinese New Year falls on Jan. 28 (2017 marks the Year of the Rooster), so there's still a little time to plan out a great menu for the celebration. From chicken wings to dumplings and wontons, there's a ton of variety you can bring to the table.

The recipes below are variations of several traditional dishes. They're full of flavor and great to serve to mingling guests.

Baked chicken wings with honey soy ginger marinade

These wings are seasoned with a simple marinade and make an ideal appetizer for a crowd.

1. Baked chicken wings with honey, soy and ginger marinade recipe

Recipe courtesy Lee Kum Kee Panda Brand

Serves 4

Ingredients:

Directions:

  1. To a large, sealable plastic bag, add the oyster sauce, soy sauce, ginger and honey. Add the chicken wings to the bag, and seal it closed. Use your hands to massage the marinade onto the wings, then refrigerate for at least a few hours or up to overnight.
  2. Heat your oven to 400 degrees F. Place a sheet of aluminum foil over a baking sheet, and lightly spray it with the cooking spray.
  3. Place the wings on the sheet so they are not touching. Use a brush to lightly add a bit of the marinade to the tops of the wings, then discard it.
  4. Bake for 20 – 30 minutes or until golden on top and the chicken is cooked through.
  5. Remove from the oven, and sprinkle with toasted sesame seeds.

Veggie pot stickers

Image: Patricia Conte/SheKnows

Pot stickers (or dumplings) make a truly special treat. This recipe is quite easy to make (use prepackaged shredded cabbage to make your prep even simpler), but don't fret if your "folding" technique is lacking — just make sure to tightly seal all the edges after stuffing them. Your guests will love digging into these tasty packets.

2. Veggie pot stickers recipe

Serves 4

Ingredients:

  • 1/2 cup shredded cabbage
  • 1/2 cup shredded carrot
  • 1/8 cup small diced white onion
  • 2 garlic cloves, minced
  • 1 tablespoon low-sodium soy sauce
  • 1/2 teaspoon sesame oil
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 1 package wonton wrappers
  • 1 teaspoon cornstarch
  • 2 tablespoons vegetable oil
  • 1/2 cup water

Directions:

  1. In a medium bowl, combine the cabbage, carrot, onion, garlic, soy sauce, sesame oil and black pepper. Mix well.
  2. In a small bowl, whisk the cornstarch with about 1/4 cup of water.
  3. One at a time, lay a wonton wrapper on a flat work surface (keep the remaining wrappers covered with a damp paper towel). Dip your finger into the cornstarch-water mixture, and run it around the edges of the wrapper.
  4. Place a teaspoon of the veggie filling in the center of the wrapper. Fold the top and bottom edges together to form a triangle. Fold the tip of the triangle down, then fold the 2 sides in toward the center. You may need to use a bit more of the water mixture to help ensure the edges are completely sealed.
  5. To a large skillet over medium heat, add the oil. When the oil is hot, carefully add the pot stickers smooth side down, and cook for a minute or more, until golden.
  6. Add the 1/2 cup of water to the pan, and put the lid on. Cook for a minute, remove the lid, and continue to cook until most of the liquid is absorbed.
  7. Remove from the skillet, and serve warm with your favorite dipping sauce.

Crab Rangoon dip with baked wonton chips

You've likely enjoyed crab rangoon at your favorite Chinese restaurant in the form of fried wontons stuffed with a warm, creamy crabmeat mixture. I've deconstructed this version and switched things up a bit. Bake the wontons in the oven for just a few minutes, then use them to dip into this cold, creamy and seasoned dip. What a treat!

3. Crab rangoon dip with baked wonton chips recipe

Serves 8

Ingredients:

  • 2 (8-ounce) packages cream cheese, softened
  • 2 (6-ounce) cans white crabmeat, drained
  • 2 tablespoons mayonnaise
  • 2 tablespoons chili garlic sauce (more or less, to taste)
  • 2 teaspoons soy sauce
  • 6 green onions, diced (use all the white portions for the dip along with a bit of the green, saving some of the green for garnish)
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground black pepper
  • 20 – 24 wonton wrappers
  • Black sesame seeds, for garnish (optional)

Directions:

For the dip

  1. To a medium bowl, add all the ingredients up to the wonton wrappers, and mix well. Taste, and adjust the seasoning as needed. Refrigerate until ready to use.

For the wonton chips

  1. Heat your oven to 350 degrees F. Line 2 baking sheets with aluminum foil, and set them aside.
  2. Use a sharp knife to cut the wonton wrappers in half, diagonally. Place the triangles on the baking sheets so they are not touching.
  3. Dip your finger into a small bowl of water, and run it across the tops of the wrapper pieces. Sprinkle with the black sesame seeds.
  4. Bake for about 4 minutes or until lightly golden. Remove from the oven, and serve with the dip.

10 facts to share with your kids about the presidential inauguration

$
0
0

Donald Trump — like it or not — is officially our President. He was sworn in today, Jan. 20, 2017, during a historical inauguration ceremony.

Plenty of Americans have misgivings about this year's election, but inaugural celebrations are an important part of our history — and are steeped in rich tradition. Today's event is the perfect opportunity to teach your kids what inauguration ceremonies are all about, past and present.

1. Presidential inaugurations have a theme

Eight years ago, President Obama’s first inauguration was themed ”A New Birth of Freedom,” which is a line from the Gettysburg Address. In 2013, the theme was “Faith in America’s Future.”

More: How to prepare your kids for the inauguration protests

Trump's theme was — you guessed it — "Make America Great Again."

2. The inaugural platform is built from scratch

For each inauguration, the platform, which holds more than 1,600 people during the ceremony, including the President of the United States and his family, is built from scratch.

The 58th Presidential Inaugural Platform used today was more than 10,000 square feet, which has been the regulation platform size every year since 2005, according to the Joint Congressional Committee of Inaugural Ceremonies. In addition to the President, the platform always holds members of the U.S. Senate and House of Representatives, cabinet members and nominees, Supreme Court justices, former presidents, and the vice president and his family.

3. The first presidential inauguration wasn’t in Washington, DC

When the very first president, George Washington, was inaugurated, it didn’t take place in Washington, DC. In 1789, New York City was the U.S. capital. George Washington carried a sword during his ceremony.

4. It wasn’t always on TV

Before television broadcasts, Americans only had the option to travel to the location of the presidential inauguration if they wanted to watch the ceremony. In 1949, Harry S. Truman was the first president to have an inauguration broadcast on TV.

5. The weather doesn’t always cooperate

The weather isn’t always pleasant for a presidential inauguration. In 1873, when Ulysses S. Grant was sworn in, it was only 16 degrees at noon. William H. Taft’s Presidential Inauguration took place indoors because of a massive blizzard. During Ronald W. Reagan’s Inauguration, it was 7 degrees.

6. The process begins with the First Nail Ceremony

Long before the inaugural ceremonies, the First Nail Ceremony marks the beginning of the long process of building the huge platform. For this election, it took place on September 21, 2016.

Politicians who got in on the action for the 2016 First Nail Ceremony were Joint Congressional Committee on Inaugural Ceremonies Chairman Senator Roy Blunt, House Speaker Paul Ryan, Senate Majority Leader Mitch McConnell, House Minority Leader Nancy Pelosi, Senator Charles Schumer, and House Majority Leader Kevin McCarthy.

Senator Blunt called the construction, "One of the most important temporary jobs done by the Architect of the Capitol," since the platform will hold so many dignitaries, and because it marks a peaceful transition of government.

7. The Bibles used are a big deal

During the presidential inauguration, the president is sworn in on a Bible. The Bibles are often heirlooms. The Bible may be open or closed, and different presidents have opened the Bible to different pages. Ronald W. Reagan used a family Bible given to him by his mother. President Obama used the same Bible Abraham Lincoln used at his presidential inauguration.

Trump was sworn in on two Bibles: One of his own that was a gift from his mother when he graduated from Sunday Church Primary School in 1955, and Lincoln's Bible, according to a press release.

8. The presidential inauguration is an all-day event

There are lots of events throughout the day during the inaugural ceremonies. These include the procession to the Capitol, the vice president’s swearing-in ceremony, the Inaugural Address, the Inaugural Parade and the Inaugural Ball.

9. President Barack H. Obama’s initial Inaugural Ceremony involved many firsts

On January 20, 2009, President Obama’s inauguration was the largest inauguration attendance in U.S. history. It was also the largest attendance of any event in Washington DC’s history. He was the first African-American to hold the office of President of the United States, and the first Hawaiian-born citizen.

10. President Obama was sworn in to his second term a day before the public ceremony

When President Obama was sworn in after being re-elected in 2013, presidents had been sworn into office 69 times, but his was the 57th presidential inauguration.

He was sworn in privately on Jan. 20th, the constitutionally-mandated date for presidential inauguration. Because it fell on a Sunday, the public ceremony was held on Monday, Jan. 21.

KT: I took the biggest risk of all my team members, and I knew there might be a chance of going home; but it's Top Chef, and I wanted to take all the risks and be the best.

SK: What was the best experience you had on the show?

KT: I think everyone would answer the same... tasting food from other chefs, seeing how they use different techniques, the learning experience and most importantly, the new friends that I have acquired.

SK: What was the biggest challenge for you on the show?

KT: Definitely missing my family. My daughters and wife are the most important part of my life and the main reason I competed on Top Chef.

GoT's Khal Drogo is back from the dead, just on another show

$

I have an incredibly important announcement to make, guys, so you should probably drop whatever you're doing and bring it in real quick. Khal Drogo is back from the dead. Well, sort of. He's back in the form of Declan Harp in Netflix's Frontier. Declan is played by Jason Momoa, the same man who gloriously brought Khal Drogo to life. But make no mistake: Declan and Drogo may be two separate men, but they share very similar personality traits.

More: For the love of Dothraki, someone confirm Drogo's return for GoT Season 7

Can you really blame Momoa for returning to what he knows? I mean, the man is the embodiment of raw, pure, masculine coolness. Is it any surprise that he is, yet again, playing a rebellious type with a (sometimes literal) axe to grind? If I'm perfectly honestly, Frontier will be a hit mostly because of Momoa and the Drogo-esque energy that he's bringing to Declan.

Frontier Trailer Netflix

Frontier Trailer Netflix

Here's proof that Declan and Drogo are basically the same guy (and we're more the blessed for it):

Declan has a perma-scowl, just like Drogo

Khal Drogo Scowl
Image: Giphy

You know that when Momoa throws on the signature scowl, it's about to go down. Drogo's scowl always meant he was about to go in on his enemies and teach them a thing or two; Declan's scowl signals precisely the same thing in the Frontier trailer.

Neither man is afraid to get his hands dirty

Frontier Declan Netflix
Image: Netflix US & Canada/Youtube

At various points in the Frontier trailer, you see Declan wasting no time getting down to the business of bashing skulls. Declan is not afraid to get his hands dirty, as Canadian frontiersman go, and Drogo has displayed to us time and again that he isn't bothered by spilling a little blood. He's a man on a mission and the time that Frontier is set in almost guarantees that things are going to get very messy when there is conflict at hand. But honestly, what could be better than watching Momoa take down his enemies in such a ferocious manner? It's one of the reasons we loved him as Drogo.

Declan and Drogo are outliers (sometimes literally)

Frontier Netflix
Image: Netflix US & Canada/Youtube

Declan appears to be wandering the Canadian wilderness at one point in the Frontier trailer, possibly relating back to the big loss he suffered that was mentioned by another character. No doubt, his ability to live in the wild and thrive there will play into his ability to outwit those Hudson's Bay Company goons out to capture him.

We've seen this wilderness living-and-thriving bit before: Drogo and the Dothraki lived out in desert-like terrain and thrived there. Those kinds of living conditions have a way of making tough men even tougher (so don't mess with 'em).

They're two men diametrically opposed to bigger governing forces

Khal Drogo Fight
Image: Giphy

Let's be real. Both men are natural-born leaders, but they're also not about to take orders from "the man." Drogo was often bent on leading his people his own way, rarely bending to the wills of others. That kind of defiance of traditional leadership was passed onto his wife, Daenerys Targaryen.

For Declan, he's a wanted man who has no intention of getting captured. After breaking off from the Hudson's Bay Company, he's been raising hell for them and making sure that business doesn't go smoothly. There's definitely a deeper reason for his defiance against the bigger authority here and his rebellion against that recalls the days of Drogo's defiance too.

Declan and Drogo have experienced deep suffering

Frontier Declan Jason Momoa
Image: Netflix US & Canada/Youtube

These men know pain. They feel it. They wallow in it. They know what's up. It's hinted in the Frontier trailer that Declan suffered a great loss, possibly causing him to break faith with his former employer, the Hudson's Bay Company. There will no doubt be an exploration of his internal brokenness and suffering in Frontier, arguably only serving to make his character even more complex.

Drogo, as we all know, was on the other side of the suffering coin. Rather than experience the loss of someone he loved, he was the loved one who was lost. His tragic and untimely death from arguably the most treatable wound on Game of Thrones (not that I'm still bitter about it or anything) was a total gut-wrencher. Drogo's death was the impetus for a lot of Daenerys' actions, but his suffering only illustrated what an important character he really was.

They are the ultimate tragic heroes

Who doesn't love a good tragic hero? Both Declan and Drogo manage to channel their feelings of loss, alienation, idealism and pure desire for domination over their oppressors into tangible ferocity. Declan, through Momoa's portrayal of him, revives the essence of Khal Drogo to the point that it feels like we may actually have Drogo back once again. Declan, too, is poised to be another great tragic hero if the tone of the Frontier trailer is maintained in the actual show.

Let's just keep our fingers crossed that Declan actually makes it through one whole season without getting killed off.

Tiffany Trump brought her boyfriend to the inauguration, but who is he?

Obviously, all of the Trump family is at the president-elect's inauguration today, even the daughter who is clearly his second favorite — the one he almost never talks about and doesn't give any money to: Tiffany Trump. And considering how small a part the Donald seems to play in Tiffany's life, it's pretty surprising that she brought a guest to the inauguration: her boyfriend, Ross Mechanic (yes, that's his real name).

More: We are all Tiffany Trump

There are a lot of reasons Mechanic probably shouldn't be at the inauguration. But there he is, so we're going to figure out everything we can about him...

Who is Tiffany Trump's bf, Ross Mechanic?

1. He's a registered Democrat

Seriously. What is this guy even doing at Trump's inauguration? Public records show he's been a registered Democrat since 2012. His parents have been registered Democrats since the '80s. Do they know who he's dating? Are they OK with it? So many questions.

2. He and Tiffany have been dating for a while

Photos of Tiffany and Mechanic together first popped up on Instagram in October 2015, when they were both attending the University of Pennsylvania. Since then, they've posted photos together from holidays, events and vacations.

3. His family is hella rich too

Mechanic probably doesn't have any problem fitting in with the über-rich Trumps. A look at his Instagram shows that he lives an extravagant lifestyle and travels all over the world. His father is the lawyer leading the real estate department as a partner at law firm Fried Frank, so it's not exactly surprising that the family's loaded.

4. He's totally using the Trump family for connections

Mechanic interned last summer at Cadre, a real estate investment startup founded by Ivanka Trump's husband, Jared Kushner.

5. His résumé is impressive, I guess, but *yawn*

Mechanic is totally a boring rich white dude. He went to a fancy private school in New York City that's taught a whole bunch of celebrities and rich people. His LinkedIn says he was a National AP Scholar, National Merit Finalist, president of the debate team and a mock trial lawyer at his high school. He's studying computer science and has interned at a couple of startups founded by rich people. He got a 2270 on his SATs, which is pretty high, but not, like, perfect. He's totally one of those boring rich white dudes who will go into some kind of business and be successful enough to stay boring and rich forever. All he needs is a Tinder pic posing with a tiger to be one of those guys that you kind of think about swiping right on just for the money and vacays, even though deep down you know he wears obnoxiously expensive loafers with shorts and that demands a left swipe.

I thought my hypomania was just relief from my depression

I know all about how it feels to have depression. For dozens of years, that was my diagnosis and my daily companion.

In the last dozen years or so, however, I have had to come to grips with the idea that I am actually bipolar — bipolar type 2, specifically. And that I sometimes have hypomania.

It was quite a revelation. I didn't believe I had ever felt manic in my life. I couldn't recall feeling anything but miserable, despondent and worthless. Although objectively, I was doing well in school and in college, had a few friends, and was never suicidal, in fact I was a depressive mess. Later, as I learned more about mania, I was able to identify some manic, or at least hypomanic, episodes that had occurred during that time, but that I had never noticed when they were happening.

When I was hypomanic, I thought I was just feeling what everyone else described as "normal" – happy, able to enjoy activities, functioning pretty well. They didn't last long, but I didn't realize how very tenuous and brittle those good feelings were how they could be shattered by the slightest bump, plunging me back into the old familiar depression. It was even more depressing to think that I couldn't even do feeling good right.

I struggled along under these circumstances for years, until at last one-half of my problem was diagnosed the depression half, of course. It certainly was the most noticeable half, the most troubling, and the most disruptive of the problems that plagued me.

My doctor prescribed Prozac and I remember it working pretty well when it kicked in after about six weeks of taking it. I can remember feelings of calm, contentment, and enjoyment. It changed my life, and probably saved it. Prozac didn't alleviate all my problems, but it did let me glimpse a world in which they were not the only things that existed. It's not too extreme to say that I rejoiced.

But, unknown to me (and my doctor), I was not purely unipolar. What was happening to the lurking hypomania during while the depression was being treated? Did it disappear? Did the Prozac take care of it too?

No. With the depression more or less at bay, hypomania found new outlets to express itself. As anxiety, for example. I had a spell of being alarmed in the cereal aisles of grocery stores. There was a time (not yet completely gone) when I thought other drivers were swerving into my lane, even when I was a passenger. (That one alarmed my husband too, when I would fling out my arms and gasp or cower, shaking in my seat, at the thought that a crash was imminent.)

More: Just because I'm agoraphobic doesn't mean that I'm introverted

My psychiatrist later explained to me that these were manifestations of hypomania that came out sideways, as anxiety instead of euphoria, ambition, desire, exaltation, and assorted addictive or destructive behavior. Trust me to have the less-fun alternative. (Although somewhat less life-wrecking.)

Since that revelation, I have tried to harness my hypomania and use my power for good. I channel my hypomanic binges into writing, for example. I can't say that it's always good writing, but at least I get words on the screen that I can fix up later. I usually have several projects going at the same time, so I can switch among them as needed. That may be hypomania too.

Sometimes I can even use my hypomanic fits to enjoy myself have a pleasant lunch out, read a book, do a puzzle, have a conversation with my husband or another friend. Of course, these activities do not always fit in well with my hypomania. At times, instead of simply enjoying these activities and sensations, I am too twitchy and nervous to relax and enjoy them.

I must admit that two of my strategies for controlling my hypomanic spells are naps and anti-anxiety pills, not necessarily in that order. But at least I am getting better at identifying when the anxiety, which I used to think of as free-floating, is actually a form of hypomania. Then a combination of hot tea, silence, cat-petting, reading and Ativan can bring me back to some kind of stasis.

If not, I just have to accept that I'm having a hypomanic episode and try to stay away from things I can buy using my PayPal account.
