Does Donald Trump have nothing better to do than tweet about Meryl Streep?

$

Anyone who watched the Golden Globes will agree: Meryl Streep's speech as she accepted the Cecil B. DeMille Award was a highlight of the night.

More: Donald Trump's joke about dating a little girl is creeping everyone out

Well, anyone except President-elect Donald Trump, who took to Twitter to slam Streep.

"Meryl Streep, one of the most over-rated actresses in Hollywood, doesn't know me but attacked last night at the Golden Globes," he wrote. "She is a Hillary flunky who lost big. For the 100th time, I never 'mocked' a disabled reporter (would never do that) but simply showed him 'groveling' when he totally changed a 16 year old story that he had written in order to make me look bad. Just more very dishonest media!"

In her speech, Streep focused on the time Trump mocked reporter Serge Kovaleski, who has a congenital joint condition. Trump still maintains that he never mocked Kovaleski's disability, except it happened on TV so there's literally film of it and why does anyone believe anything this guy says?

Donald Trump mocks reporter with disability

Remember when Trump claimed that he didn't have time to have "repetitive" daily security briefings? How funny that he doesn't have time for that, something that is integral to the safety of our country and his effing job, but he can still tweet up a storm when Saturday Night Live hurts his feelings or when he needs to accuse Meryl Streep of lying about something that he literally did on camera.

And just because clearly no one on Trump's team has anything bigger to worry about, his spokeswoman, KellyAnne Conway, went of Fox & Friends Monday morning to keep on slamming Streep.

"I’m concerned that somebody with a platform like Meryl Streep is also, I think, inciting people’s worst instincts,” she said. “When she won’t get up there and say, ‘I didn’t like it, but let’s try to support him and see where we can find some common ground with him.’ Which he has actually done from moment one. The moment he won, he said I’m going to be president for [all people]."

Here's a novel idea that Trump and his team should take a minute to think about: Presidents have been publicly criticized for all of recorded history. When it keeps happening, and especially when it happens for legitimate reasons like you fucking mocked a disabled person, maybe you can learn to deal with it like a grown-up and do your damn job without being constantly butthurt.

If you've been hoping the veterans were going to dominate Season 14 of Top Chef, you'd better think again.

Following Sam Talbot's exit, another veteran cheftestant got booted off — Amanda Baumgarten. The judges found the Chicago chef's duck dish boring in the elimination challenge.

So is she surprised she was told to pack her knives and go? And who's she rooting for? Here's what she had to say in our exclusive interview.

More: Top Chef's Silvia Barban & Sylva Senat apparently had beef on the show

SheKnows: Were you surprised by your elimination?

Amanda Baumgarten: It's never fun getting eliminated, but I had a feeling that it was my time to go.

SK: What was it like working with all the judges on the show? Who's the most intimidating?

AB: All the judges make me nervous, but Padma [Lakshmi] is by far the most intimidating. Her palate is so on point. Nothing gets past her.

SK: Which contestant do you think deserves to win? Or who are you rooting for?

AB: I think this season is all about girl power. I'm torn between Brooke [Williamson], Casey [Thompson], and Shirley [Chung]. I'm rooting for them all!

More: The three female winners of Top Chef have some words for the new contestants

SK: Who did you consider your biggest competition?

AB: The female veterans!

SK: Was there anyone on the show you really clashed with? Who was it and why?

AB: I got along with everyone. We all really bonded with each other.

SK: What's one thing that happened behind the scenes viewers didn't get to see on the show?

AB: ...I don't think I can tell you. [Winks]

SK: Who do you think deserved to go home on last night’s episode?

AB: Like I said, I think it was my time to go.

SK: What was the best experience you had on the show?

AB: Getting to know and work with such a group of talented chefs was by far the best part of returning for another season. I'm really proud to call them my friends.

SK: What was the biggest challenge for you on the show?

AB: The clock...

SK: Who's your favorite Top Chef contestant of all time and why?

AB: Katsuji Tanabe!!

Pope Francis encourages women to breastfeed in the Sistine Chapel

$

Pope Francis, our vote for "pope of popes," told mothers attending a service in the Sistine Chapel yesterday they should feel free to breastfeed their children during the ceremony if they needed to.

Indeed, our favorite pope encouraged breastfeeding in public. And not just in public, but in the Sistine Chapel. "No," say the offended, "not the Sistine Chapel! Not that sacred place with all the boobs, butts and penises on the ceiling!" Yes, that place.

At an event celebrating the baptism of Jesus, during which he baptized 28 children (which you know took more than a little bit of time), the pope said, "The ceremony is a little long; someone is crying because he's hungry. That's the way it is...You mothers, go ahead and breastfeed without fear. Just like the Virgin Mary nursed Jesus."

And this isn't the first time Pope Francis has come out in favor of public breastfeeding. In fact, at the same event two years ago, he also told mothers to "give your children milk" and asked those in attendance to remember that there are women who "unfortunately, can't give food to their children."

The "appropriateness" of breastfeeding in church is a subject of debate in the United States. In 2015, a mother in Indiana says she was asked to "cover up, go to the bathroom [or] nursery, or leave" when she started feeding her 7-month-old during services. Other women say that though they have never been asked to leave, they do experience what a USA Today article called, "a quiet disapproval." But now that we've got the pope, in the Sistine Chapel, asking women to please breastfeed their infants, hopefully more churchgoers will begin to accept that breastfeeding — even in church — is a natural, normal and acceptable practice.

And listen, if the pope says it's OK to breastfeed in church, then it should for sure be OK at a Denny's.

So far, 2017 hasn't been easy for NBA star J.R. Smith and his wife Jewel. The couple recorded a video revealing the "very important news" that marks a tough time for the family. Their third daughter was born last week — five months before her due date.

"Hi, everybody," said Jewel. "We decided to share with the world what’s been going on with our family the past five days. We know a lot of you guys congratulated us on the expectancy of our little baby girl, but we had her five months early. She’s 5 days old today, and her name is Dakota and she weighs 1 pound."

Mom channels Chewbacca during labor

$

Yet another mother has gone viral by channeling her inner Wookiee—this time, from a hospital bed, in full-blown labor.

You'll likely recall Candace Payne’s supremely popular viral video from last May. The Texas mom donned a talking Chewbacca mask from Kohl’s in her car and proceeded to dissolve in hysterical laughter. Her infectious video wound up becoming the most-watched Facebook video of all time, with more than 164 million views. For real. And if you haven’t seen it, we dare you to watch Payne’s delight at her new toy and not want to invite her over for Thanksgiving. We tried to resist; we really did. But Payne's joy over her mask was so genuine, we kind of fell in love with her. Did she intend to go viral? Doubtful, which made her video all the more appealing and ridiculous.

Now, a Detroit woman is garnering attention for her own Chewbacca-mask video: this time, while she's in labor. She packed her Chewbacca mask—presumably along with her toothbrush and slippers—for her trip to the hospital to deliver her baby.

Is it just us, or is this whole thing feeling a little too planned? Maybe earlier in 2016 we would have delighted in her antics, but now times have changed, and we've grown hardened and cynical.

Katie Stricker Curtis's 12-second video features her in the Chewbacca mask, writhing in labor pain and groaning in Shyriiwook, the Wookiee language. The video has already garnered close to 100k views since she posted it on January 2 after giving birth to her son, Jayden.

Many mothers flooded Stricker Curtis's Facebook page to leave comments of congratulations and praise. A few seemed eager to borrow a page from her playbook: "I'm getting a Hulk mask for delivery day," said one commenter. On Twitter, fan @kerieffingmarsh said, "The woman who gave birth while wearing a Chewbacca mask is the kind of woman I aspire to be."

(How about Ruth Bader Ginsburg? Meryl Streep? Ronda Rousey? No? You're going with the woman who gave birth wearing a Chewbacca mask. Okey-doke.)

Look, maybe it’s just us, but we think Shyriiwook is fairly indistinguishable from the noises most women in labor make anyway. So why is Stricker Curtis's video so popular? Is it the birth angle, the Star Wars theme, or the fact that we're all secretly craving a little Internet fame?

We're interested to see how far this Wookiee mother's fame takes her. In Payne's case, her parking-lot Chewbacca fun scored her not just admirers, but TV appearances, gifts and even the chance to perform onstage at the Grand Ole Opry with country singer Dylan Scott. And, again, that's great for her, but we kind of hope this copycat Chewbacca mom doesn't beget more. We can do without more Wookiees giving birth. Or getting hitched. Or getting their tubes tied. Or going to the DMV. Actually we'd like to see a Woookiee at the DMV.

Hager was interviewing celebs on the Golden Globes red carpet before the show when she made the mistake. Talking with Pharrell Williams, she said, "So, you’re nominated for Hidden Fences." Williams is actually nominated for Hidden Figures. The mistake was immediately called out online, especially since the two films she confused both feature black casts.

Hager appeared on Monday morning's episode of the Today show, where she offered viewers a heartfelt apology for the mix up.

"If I offended people, I am deeply sorry," she said. "It was a mistake because as y’all know I’m not perfect. What I didn’t want to do is make anybody feel lesser than what they are."

Hager also said she's seen both Hidden Figures and Fences, and called both of them brilliant.

Michael Keaton made the same mistake from the Golden Globes stage, but so far, has stayed silent about it.

Meanwhile, Hager's co-host, Al Roker, had her back on Today, saying all the social media hate directed at Hager is "a cheap shot." Roker, however, is kind of known for embarrassing live TV mess-ups, including one at the Golden Globes in which he called Jessica Biel "Jessica Alba."

Top Chef contestants share their secrets for perfect pork chops

$
0
0

Pork chops are sometimes called "the other white meat," and too often, they're cooked into oblivion until they do, indeed, resemble dry chicken.

But pork chops have amazing potential. Cooked properly, pork chops are flavorful, juicy and meaty — nothing like an overcooked piece of chicken breast.

We asked some contestants from Bravo's Top Chef Season 14 for their tips for cooking perfect pork chops every time. Follow their lead, and you'll be cooking like a pro in no time.

1. Choose the right meat

Those thin boneless pork chop filets sold at the grocery store? They're basically setting you up for disappointment.

"Go for the thick-cut bone-in pork chops," recommends Chef Jim Smith. "Skip the thin cutlets unless you plan to bread and deep-fry."

Chef Casey Thompson recommends opting for a double-cut bone-in chop, while Chef Brooke Williamson suggests looking outside the grocery store.

"Heritage breeds are the first way to go, as they tend to have more fat, marbling and flavor. That's my biggest tip of the day. There are farms all over the country who raise some incredible pigs and are happy to butcher and ship," Williamson says. She reminds us that if you start with quality product, you'll be more likely to wind up with quality results.

More: Sweet tea makes the best brine for tender, juicy pork chops

2. Season it well

The key to seasoning pork chops throughout is to start well before you actually start cooking.

Chef Sylva Senat recommend marinating your pork chop for at least four hours or overnight, while Williamson and Thompson recommend a brine.

Thompson brines her pork chops in dill pickle juice for four hours, which is a simple way to boost the pork's flavor.

Williamson prefers a 24-hour brine, and usually seasons the brining liquid with salt, sugar, bay leaves, coriander and clove.

Either way, a marinade or brine is essential to imbuing your chops with flavor.

3. Don't over cook it!

Most of us are used to eating tough, gray pork chops. But these days, even the FDA says that it's safe to eat your pork once it's been cooked to 145 degrees F thanks to advances in the farming and processing of pork (though at least one of our chefs prefers their pork a little rarer, around 140 degrees F).

"Nothing can help you if you've overcooked your meat. I tend to err on the side of under rather than over, even when it comes to pork — and especially when it comes to loin or chops," Williamson told SheKnows.

Her preferred method for perfectly cooked chops? "I like the high-heat-then-rest method because I find it's the best way to lock in the juices," she said, recommending that home cooks sear the chops over high heat on the stove first, then transfer the pan to finish cooking in the oven.

Thompson and Smith also like grilling their pork chops — it adds additional smoky flavor to the meat.

When all else fails and you fear you've overcooked your chops? "Slap a square of salted butter on top and call it a day," suggests Williamson.

4. Let it rest

Your pork chops are finally done, but the hardest part is yet to come — letting the meat rest. Resting your meat for 10 minutes before you start cutting into it allows the juices within to redistribute, so the meat is succulent throughout.

So, think you're ready to try making Top Chef-quality pork chops at home? Check out Jim Smith's grilled pork chop recipe (but keep some salted butter handy just in case!).

Ingredients:

For the vinaigrette

  • 1/4 cup sherry vinegar
  • 1 small shallot, diced
  • 1 teaspoon whole-grain mustard
  • Juice from 1/2 lemon
  • 1 teaspoon whole-grain mustard
  • 1 teaspoon honey
  • Salt and fresh-cracked pepper to taste
  • 3/4 cup olive oil
  • 1 teaspoon chopped parsley
  • 1 teaspoon chopped scallion

For the pork

  • 4 thick-cut bone-in pork chops
  • Salt and fresh-cracked pepper to taste
  • Lemon halves for finishing

For the salad

  • 2 English cucumbers, halved
  • 1 sweet onion, cut into thick rings
  • 1 tablespoons vegetable oil (for grilling)
  • 2 radishes, thinly sliced
  • 10 – 12 basil leaves, torn
  • 1/4 bunch flat-leaf parsley leaves
  • 1/4 bunch mint leaves, torn
  • Salt and fresh-cracked pepper to taste

Directions:

  1. Set up the grill and preheat it to medium-high heat.
  2. In a medium mixing bowl, whisk the sherry vinegar, shallot, mustard, lemon juice, honey and salt and pepper until combined. Gently add the oil into the vinegar mixture by pouring a steady stream of the oil into the vinegar while whisking. Add the herbs and season to taste. Set aside.
  3. Generously season the pork chops with salt and pepper and grill them to an internal temperature of 145 degrees F, about 3 minutes per side.
  4. While cooking the pork chops, toss the halved cucumber and onion rings in the vegetable oil and season with salt and black pepper and grill. Let the onions and cucumber get a good char before removing them from the heat and allowing them to cool.
  5. When the cucumber and onions are cool, cut the grilled cucumber into half-inch pieces and place them into a mixing bowl with the grilled onion and the rest of the salad ingredients, season with salt and black pepper and dress with the vinaigrette.
  6. For plating, place the pork chop on the base of the plate, top with the salad and finish with a squeeze of lemon juice.

More: Was that just a friendly kiss Sarah Paulson gave Amanda Peet at the Golden Globes?

The two dated from 1997 to 1999, got engaged, and then abruptly split up when Thornton moved in with Angelina Jolie, who was 20 years younger than him. Thornton and Jolie only stayed married for three years, which probably only added to the slap in the face that Dern felt like she was getting. That's something you can't let go of overnight — or even after almost two decades — and Dern proved it at the Golden Globes on Sunday.

When Thornton won the award for Best Actor in a TV Series for his role in Amazon's Goliath, he had to squeeze past Dern in the audience to get to the stage. Props to whoever made that seating arrangement, because that, folks, is how great TV is made.

She seems to have figured things out, though, and will be returning to the show, she announced on Instagram.

"Yes, don't call it a comeback," she wrote alongside a promo shot for the show. "I've just been taking my sweet time doing what needed to be done. My guys and I are ready to rock it . No bs, you know how we do it."

Curtis gave birth to her son, Harper Curtis-Maguire, in 2015, and has been battling his father, Shane Maguire, for custody ever since. They're still making regular court appearances; their next scheduled court date is later this month.

The battle has gotten nasty at times. At one point, Maguire asked a judge to force Curtis to submit to a psychological evaluation, but the judge decided at the time that the evaluation wasn't necessary. Since then, a judge has ordered both parents to work with their lawyers and each other to come up with a three-month parenting plan.

More: Amy Duggar just can't stand her husband's attitude anymore

In an emotional teaser for the reality star's upcoming season of Marriage Boot Camp, she can be seen describing being lifted by her throat "all the way up to the ceiling." Considering the show, viewers immediately assumed the incident involved her husband. Now, Duggar is revealing that it wasn't him, but another male family member.

The abuse happened a long time ago, Duggar told Entertainment Tonight, but talking about it on Marriage Boot Camp helped her to finally move on.

"I did get the healing I needed," she said. "That was something that was always in the back of my mind — a big question mark of why or how it affected me. I left Marriage Boot Camp feeling a lot lighter, and I did forgive that person. That was probably the hardest day."

Duggar didn't say which family member was involved, but she did reveal that she says his name on the show. She also described calling him to give him a heads up before the show airs.

"I called this person and told them what was going on and that kind of thing," she said. "I think they were shocked about it and a little hurt that it was mentioned, but at the same time, it needed to happen. I needed to forgive that person. It was not something I planned to bring out. When you’re there, you forget cameras are rolling. You’re in therapy. We’ve talked a lot about stuff in our past, but that was something that was very hard for me. Emma Stone & Andrew Garfield's relationship is a La La Land love story IRL

$

If you somehow haven’t seen La La Land yet, our condolences—and maybe stop reading this post. We’ll try not to give the entire plot away here, but let it be said that Andrew Garfield proved last night that he and Emma Stone are living La La Land in real life, and if you don’t know what that means, don’t worry: There’s still time to see the film that swept the Golden Globes last night.

More: Emma Stone and Andrew Garfield giving us hope for a reunion is just wrong

In an interview with Access Hollywood on the red carpet, Stone confirmed that he’d chosen ex-girlfriend Emma Stone as his desert island pick in an interview with the Hollywood Reporter last month. "Emily is my, you know, I adore her and I always will. I'm so excited for her tonight. And my fingers are so crossed for her, it's insane," he said. If you ask us, it’s sort of cruel to ask someone to discuss an ex on the red carpet, but what is Hollywood if not cruel, at times.

"If I was on a desert island [with Stone], that'd be wonderful,” Garfield added. “We'd have a whale of a time."

More: 7 Times Andrew Garfield's beard swallowed his face whole

Apparently, Garfield’s crossed fingers performed some kind of magic, because Stone took home the award for best actress in a comedy or musical last night. And Garfield was there for it, with a super-sweet standing ovation.

When Garfield and Stone broke up, it was rumored that the split happened because Garfield was ready to start a family and Stone was not. Though that’s not what happened in La La Land, it definitely runs parallel to the plot of the film—and proves that sometimes, even true love is pushed aside thanks to circumstance.

More: Andrew Garfield goes on rant about Hollywood and our shallow society

Let’s all hope we don’t see Stone and Garfield run the same course as Mia and Sebastian in the movie—and if we do see Stone with someone else in the end, we’ll certainly all flash back to the end of La La Land. And look something like this:

6 ways you annoy your kid's teacher — and how to stop it

$

Getting your children organized and ready for school can be a real challenge. Believe me, I know. In addition to being an elementary school teacher for 13 years, I am now the mother to one crazy toddler. Before I was an educator or a mother, I worked as a private nanny for six different families. I’ve dealt with almost 400 children ranging in ages from newborns to teenagers.

Still, before I became a mom myself, I could be a little hard on the mothers of my students. I wondered how they could forget supplies or send their child to school with unbrushed hair. Now I get it. I’ve forgotten to pack my son’s water bottle for preschool so many times, they’ve given him his own cup. And if he has a tantrum because he wants to wear his Spider-Man suit out of the house, I just let him wear it.

So I know it seems unfair when I tell you there’s a chance you may just be annoying the crap out of your child’s teacher. But I'm only trying to make things right. It's not hard to bypass these irritations and come out looking like the coolest parent your kid’s teacher ever had to deal with. First, however, you must know what you're doing wrong.

More: What teachers really think of parents who 'hate homework'

1. You resemble a packhorse

Even in the earliest grades, teachers are trying to instill autonomy and independence in children. One of the ways we do this is to insist kids carry their own belongings. So when we see you, dear parent, accompanying your kid to school with a child-size Dora the Explorer backpack in one hand and a water bottle, homework, lunch bag and various items your child has demanded accompany her in the other, it makes us a little crazy.

It’s not just too much stuff. I have spent countless hours helping students to fasten and unfasten clips and buckles that weren’t age-appropriate.

Of course, teachers are here to help students with tasks, but imagine if every child in the class needed help with their clothes, backpack, water bottle, lunch items and supplies — we wouldn't have time to teach!

Pro tip: Reorganize the bag so that it’s light enough for them to carry themselves and make sure they can handle all buckles, clips and various accessories themselves. Practice at home as needed.

2. You neglect the basics

Bathroom hygiene must be taught at home (unless your child has special needs and provisions have been made). Many school boards will not allow teachers to assist with these tasks. In emergencies when a child has been sick, I have wiped them if they couldn’t do it themselves, but this really isn’t part of an educator's job.

Pro tip: Provide your child with their own bathroom bag with wipes and hand sanitizer to make bathroom time speedier and cleaner for all.

3. You ignore school communications

I get it; parents are busy. So are teachers! When parents ignore important school communications such as permission slips or homework records, they create additional work for the teacher, who has to chase them around.

This is especially important for school concerts or plays. It can cause the teacher a lot of undue stress when parents don't respond to deadlines or respond to requests for help with costumes or other preparations. I’ve spent hours writing concert scripts, allotting similar numbers of lines to each child so that everyone feels involved, crafting and buying costume items, only to be told by a mom the day before that her son wouldn’t be attending. It’s enough to make me want to tear my hair out!

Pro tip: Every night, go through your child’s bag with your child and separate the paperwork into important and not-so-important. Now, take the important stuff and input the due dates on your calendar, highlight information and stick it somewhere prominent, like on the fridge.

More: Headmaster's letter to teachers is actually genius parenting advice

4. You think your child is perfect

Parents who recognize there are two sides to every story are remarkably few and far between. It’s understandable to feel protective of your child, but when the teacher tells you there is a problem either academically or behaviorally, hear them out.

There isn’t a school-wide conspiracy against your child. If a pattern develops in which different teachers are reporting the same problem to you, please believe us. I have had parents deny there was a problem with their child even as I showed them written records from multiple teachers.

Pro tip: Try to remember that your child’s teacher cares about them and is in a unique position to see how they interact with others all day long. Give their opinion the appropriate weight it deserves.

5. You don’t follow the rules

If the teacher says she can only talk about your child’s progress at lunchtime or after school, believe her. Don’t monopolize all her time before class. If she asks for communication to be by phone call, don’t email. If the school rules state no plastic containers/nuts/candy/soda in lunches, abide by the rules. When parents rebel, other students and parents start thinking they can break the rules too, and all hell breaks loose. Like many things in the classroom environment, little habits can seem like no big deal, but once everyone starts to adopt these practices, they add up to a major disruption to the teacher's main job.

Pro tip: If you can’t remember the rules and don’t want to bother the teacher, ask the school office! They are a fount of knowledge.

6. You’re too familiar

Sure, I like you. Maybe in another lifetime we would be friends. But please, don’t bring me coffee — it can look like you’re trying to curry my favor. And definitely don’t try to friend me on social media. My radio silence will embarrass us both.

Pro tip: If you really think we have the makings of a beautiful friendship, at least wait until the end of the school year when your child is out of my class before you make any moves.

Parents don’t have it easy, but neither do teachers. They deal with ever-increasing demands from administration and government directives, inflated class sizes and a general public perception that they just play duck, duck, goose all day. Help ease the load and strive to be a partner in your child’s learning, and everyone will benefit.

I have spooky dreams about my old cats before adopting new ones

$

0

First of all, let me say that I don't believe in ghosts. I also don't believe that dreams predict the future.

Still, when it comes to cats, spirits and dreams are definitely involved.

Whenever one of our cats dies, my husband and I take turns selecting the next cat – unless one simply shows up at our door and chooses us, which has been happening more and more lately. But if I'm the one to choose, how do I know when it's time?

I've known plenty of people, including my mother and my mother-in-law, who, when a pet dies, swear they will never get another one. Unless they move into a small apartment that doesn't allow pets – or requires an exorbitant fee for the right – they always do.

I don't know how other people know when the time is right, but when it's time for a new kitty, I have a cat dream that lets me know.

More: My animals give me the nonjudgmental support I need for my social anxiety

Once the cat was Shaker, a tuxedo cat we had for many years. Some time after she died I dreamed about her. She was sitting on the walkway in front of my grandmother's house, looking just as beautiful and dignified as she did in life. She meowed, turned, and walked back up the sidewalk. I was happy to see her again. (I always am when dead friends visit me in dreams.) And I got the feeling that she was ready for her spirit to move on and make way for another cat in my heart and home.

Another time I dreamed of Chelsea, a black-and-white cat we lost to kidney failure. In the dream, she was curled up in a dresser drawer with assorted clothes – and five tiny kittens snuggled up to her, nursing. Real-life Chelsea was spayed (all our cats are neutered), so I remember thinking it was odd. But again, the message of the dream seemed to be that her visit was to reassure me that she was not alone in the afterlife, and that another kitten was to be welcomed.

Sometimes, however, phantom kitties appear in waking life.

Everyone who has owned cats has had the experience of seeing movement out of the corner of their eye and thinking for an instant that it's a cat. But when you look around, there's no cat there.

The strange part is that the half-seen cat is often not a cat that the person currently owns. It seems to be a cat from the past or future, or even an unknown cat, just visiting. Nor is it always just a figment of the imagination, a trick of vision. I have experienced standing still and feeling a cat brushing against the back of my leg. When I looked down, of course, again there was no cat present.

More: Your dog's not misbehaving – she's talking to ghosts

I think these "visitations" are caused by the cat energy that builds up in a house that has hosted felines. It gets tucked away in corners and closets, only appearing when you don't expect it. I find these phantom kitties comforting, not scary. They are welcome in my house.

A friend of ours lived in a small apartment where he was not allowed to have pets. One day he told us that he would like to have a cat and we told him that his landlady could hardly object to a phantom cat. After a week or so, he told us that no phantom cat had appeared. "Well," we said, "invite one in."

"How do I do that?" he asked.

"Put out a mental call. Roll out a spiritual welcome mat," we said. If there's a better way to describe it, I don't know what it is.

So John put out a welcoming vibe directed at any spirit cats in the area. The next day, he told us he saw some movement out of the corner of his eye – a cat he could never quite visualize but also could never ignore or deny. The spirit cat even moved with him when he went to a new apartment.

More: My foul-mouthed dog is having a territorial dispute with the ghost upstairs

So are these really cats from beyond or tricks of the light? Wishes or fantasies of cats? Glitches and vagaries of human perception? The truth is, I don't really care. These feline phenomena – whatever their source – comfort me and connect me with cat friends that I still love and badly miss. And that's enough for me.

So basically Milo Ventimiglia just doesn't have any more time for Gilmore Girls

Remember when Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life came to a close and Rory revealed to Lorelai that she is pregnant? Those final four words definitely left fans wondering just who Rory's baby daddy is. Well, if you ask Milo Ventimiglia, he has no idea and seems like he could care less, because, well, he hasn't really thought about it.

More: 'Gilmore Girls' revival: A complete guide to where every character left off

Clearly, Ventimiglia isn't like every other fan who is probably attempting to conduct their very own DNA test somehow to figure out who the dad is, stat. While chatting with Variety at the 2017 Golden Globes, he was asked who he thought the father of Rory's child is.

The actor who brings Jess Mariano to life gave quite the surprising answer and said, "I don't think it's any of the three guys at all." He added, "I don't know. You know what? I haven't really sat around and thought about it, wondered who it was. So, I'll be surprised as anyone else is."

More: QUIZ: Think you're the biggest Gilmore Girls fan? Prove it!

Whoa. He doesn't think it's Jess, Logan, or Dean? Admittedly, fans probably didn't suspect Dean, seeing as he is now married with children of his own. Also, Dean and Rory don't seem to have anything romantic going on like they did in previous seasons. As for the other two, Jess and Logan appeared to be the most likely candidates, in addition to Paul and Wookie guy. Though, it has to be Logan, right?

Thanks to Ventimiglia's response, feel free to run wild with even more theories as to who it could be. Really, the This Is Us star could just be pulling fans' legs and adding to the speculation. Or, he very well has no idea because he hasn't been allowed inside Amy Sherman-Palladino's inner circle.

Whatever the case, the identity of Rory's baby daddy remains a mystery and will probably continue to be until new episodes (keep those fingers crossed) of Gilmore Girls pop up on Netflix

As for Ventimiglia, he'll be too busy channeling all of his energy into playing Jack Pearson. Really, who can blame him or be mad at him for that?

The best under-$20 deep conditioners for dry, curly hair

Curly hair is like a needy, fussy house plant. It requires constant moisture, a temperate climate, and some sweet words of encouragement, and then even after your most diligent upkeep, it will almost always turn into a shriveled piece of garbage without warning and for no reason. And that’s curly hair on a normal day. Which means during the winter, a.k.a. right now, when the dry air is slowly turning your curls into a fuzzy frizz ball, you need to run some serious damage control with weekly deep conditioner treatments.

More: 9 Insanely Pretty Gold Hair Accessories to Wear Tomorrow

If you’re not already using a deep conditioner, we hope that your curls haven’t taken over your life like Audrey II in Little Shop of Horrors. But even if it has, you can still tame the beast by combing a super-rich deep conditioner weekly through dry hair (yup, you read that correctly—conditioners can’t permeate wet, swollen hair strands as effectively as they can with dry strands, so always apply your deep conditioner to dry hair, section by section, before hopping in the shower).

Each of these 12 conditioners is specifically formulated to deeply moisturize curly hair for a seriously shiny, smooth, and, most importantly, healthy, finish, which means you’ll finally know the meaning of a “good” hair day, even in the middle of winter. Scroll down to find your favorite, then try one out tonight, lest you live another day with the snarled mess of curls trying to swallow your head.

Eric Dickerson should never have been on Celebrity Apprentice

The best stars on Celebrity Apprentice are clever and driven — Leeza Gibbons is a great example. Other Celebrity Apprentice contestants are prone to drama, but they're also incredibly entertaining to watch.

Driven or dramatic, it takes all types to make this show succeed. What we can't stand is when somebody just can't be bothered to put in any effort, or at least say something interesting. Such was the case with Eric Dickerson, who absolutely deserved his merciless termination at the hands of Arnold Schwarzenegger.

More: Miley Cyrus and Arnold Schwarzenegger's run-in was just weird

Dickerson showed up late and had a very laid-back attitude. He contributed little to his team's project, instead letting his fellow contestants do all the hard work. Granted, the project wasn't the most interesting the show has ever had: it involved filming an infomercial and talk show about grape juice. Still, there was a lot at stake for Dickerson, who had the opportunity to earn serious money for his charity. Evidently, none of that mattered; he made it clear that he didn't want to be there and would be perfectly happy to go home.

Eric Dickerson
Image: NBC

Not only did Dickerson act ambivalent about the show while putting together his team's infomercial (or rather, chilling while everybody else did all the hard work), he made the fatal mistake of actively telling Schwarzenegger that he didn't particularly care if he was fired. That is just not something you say on Celebrity Apprentice. Schwarzenegger was actually about to fire that week's project manager (Chael Sonnen), but he decided that a complete lack of drive was a much bigger problem than mere incompetence, so he sent Dickerson to the chopper.

More: Don't discount Arnold Schwarzenegger as the new boss on Celebrity Apprentice

Right before he delivered the always hilarious line "You're terminated" to Dickerson, Schwarzenegger gave him some compelling food for thought: even if he doesn't particularly enjoy being on a reality show, Dickerson should work hard so that he can earn money for a deserving charity. Yes, the money would go to some other charity if Dickerson didn't accomplish anything, but still, it would have been nice to see him try. Otherwise, what's the point?

More: The Apprentice turned into a presidential campaign when no one was watching

Of course, Dickerson wasn't the only celebrity ready to head home. Snooki also bowed out way too early and was too willing to give up when the going got tough. But at least she made the show a little more entertaining, even if she was simply the love to hate contestant.

We were not at all disappointed to see Dickerson and Snooki go home. They clearly do not belong in this competition. We're glad that other celebrities actually want to make something of this extraordinary opportunity.

10 things you shouldn't have to leave your home to enjoy

$

With the hustle and bustle of daily life, we all deserve a break to catch our breath and unwind sometimes. Unfortunately, we've somehow fallen into a trap of believing we have to leave home and pay an arm and a leg for the things that make us feel happy. In reality, though, there are lots of things you shouldn't have to leave your home to enjoy.

More: 8 tricks to make your living room the comfiest place in the house

Our homes are our sanctuaries, and some days (read: most) we want nothing more than to curl up somewhere inside and simply relax. This is especially true during the winter, when it's cold outside and the very thought of leaving the house sends shivers up your spine.

Good news: You can shove your coat and scarf back into the hall closet and get ready for some R&R — nesting-style. Why? Well, you don't actually have to leave home to indulge in the following things.

1. Watching a theater-quality movie

Movie GIF
Image: Giphy

Granted, you won't be able to recreate the sheer size of a movie theater screen (unless your home is palatial, in which case...), but you can pull together a theater-quality movie experience a lot easier and more affordably than you probably think. Get yourself a great projector, screen and speakers, and subscribe to a streaming service that offers new releases and you're well on your way. Don't forget to fix some buttered popcorn to get the full effect.

2. Dining on a gourmet meal

Gourmet meal
Image: Giphy

While eating out at a fancy restaurant occasionally is lovely, you shouldn't have to rely on it entirely if you're craving a gourmet meal. And, newsflash, you don't have to. There are myriad mouthwatering options available. Why not try a cooking class so you can actually create your own gourmet meals from scratch? Or if you prefer having someone else do the heavy lifting, there are meal-delivery companies popping up every day that will deliver healthy gourmet dishes for a little as $7 per meal.

3. Soaking up a spa-like experience

Spa GIF
Image: Giphy

Want to go to the spa but hate the thought of having to leave home — not to mention shell out big bucks for spa treatments? Soaking up your own in-home spa experience can be as easy as drawing a tub filled with soaking salts or bubbles. Dim the lights and play a soothing instrumental in the background, and you'll feel like a new person. Plus, if you're feeling adventurous, you can find DIY spa tips (think at-home facials, sugar scrubs and seaweed wraps) with a quick internet search.

More: Make your own candles in the colors and scents you've been dreaming of

4. Having a great cup of coffee

Coffee GIF
Image: Giphy

Let's be real: Coffee is life, and there are some stellar ways to elevate your home brew. A few pro trends to try in your coffee for a coffeehouse experience at home: cardamom, salt, cinnamon, butter, booze, vanilla extract, coconut milk, ice cream and egg (yes, egg!). Another tip? Pairing coffee with a newspaper is a quintessential combo.

5. Getting everything off your shopping list

Shopping GIF
Image: Giphy

Shopping can be great fun... or it can be a nightmare. Particularly during the holiday-packed winter months, the crowds are hectic and seemingly more willing than ever to trample you in order to snag the last waffle iron. So why bother? Sites like Amazon ship fast, and oftentimes, free (with an Amazon Prime subscription) directly to your door. And if you live in an area where Amazon Prime Now is available, that includes free two-hour delivery of household goods like groceries.

6. One word: Karaoke

Karaoke GIF
Image: Giphy

I mean, right? Finding a karaoke joint where you feel comfortable enough to belt out your own song pick is daunting enough. Admittedly, it's fun to watch the endless parade of karaoke contenders take the stage and sing, but you don't have to load up and pile into a crowded bar for that. Even if you don't have a home karaoke entertainment system, you can easily turn your smartphone into a karaoke machine using this free hack.

7. Going to a concert

Concert GIF
Image: Giphy

You've heard of Netflix and chill, but how about Netflix and concerto? Turns out, you don't have to brave the cold or nosebleed seats to see a truly moving musical event — Netflix actually has several secret categories devoted entirely to streaming music. There is category 1701 or Music, category 90361 or Music & Concert Documentaries and category 2856 or World Music Concerts.

8. Basking in silence

Peace and quiet GIF
Image: Giphy

If you have kids, you may very well be scoffing at the notion that your home could ever be a place of peace and quiet again. But, hey, that's what relatives and babysitters are for, right? You shouldn't have to leave your house to get some much-needed quiet time, especially when you are wiped out after a long week at work. Rather, call in reinforcements to whisk away the kids and then revel in the silence.

9. Throwing a picnic

Picnic GIF
Image: Giphy

Not only is throwing a picnic in the home practical, it can also be super-romantic. Just think about it — some fine wine, a blanket laid out on the living room floor, dinner for two and perhaps some candles too? Swoon. Family-friendly indoor picnics are a blast too. Besides, having a picnic indoors as opposed to out means you don't have to worry about things like bugs... or, you know, bears.

10. Dancing your heart out

Dancing GIF
Image: Giphy

Sure, going out dancing is an exciting indulgence every now and then. But you don't have to wait for the next time the stars align on a night out dancing to get your rhythm on. Crank up your MP3 playlist or a music streaming service like Spotify or Pandora, and dance to your heart's content right there in the middle of your living room. Perks? It's great cardio, and no one can see you do the Carlton.

Un-cuffing season is definitely a thing: Here’s how to deal

$
0
0

Screw cuffing season— 2016 was a time of breakups, a.k.a. “un-cuffing” season. Seemingly rock-solid celebrity couples went up in flames, including Angelina Jolie and Brad Pitt, Naomi Watts and Liev Schreiber, Jennifer Myer and Tobey Maguire (RIP, all). And what’s happening in Hollywood also seems to be happening IRL, with friends going through rocky periods and unexpected splits. Sure, you could argue that breakups happen year-round, and can’t be predicted by the time of year, but there’s a reason people started referring to fall and winter as cuffing season: Because it’s a damn great time to have a warm body to snuggle up with.

More: It's time to stop making excuses in our relationships this year

So WTF’s behind this weird reverse trend? I asked psychiatrist and relationship therapist Dion Metzger, MD, for her insights. “My theory is that some people want to cut partners loose before the holiday season starts,” she says. “They could have been super fun during the summer to go to the beach, catch an outdoor concert with, or just hang out. During the fall and winter months, things can get a little hairy if you’re with someone you’re not completely committed to. You have the issue of whether to bring them home for the holidays, New Year’s Eve, and then Valentine's Day. It’s four straight months where your commitment is put to the test, so it’s easier for some to just part ways before.” Ouch.

It seems that fall can be a good time to un-cuff for those who, even if they were formerly committed, don’t want to do the rounds of another holiday season with an S.O. Anita, 27, of New York City, is coping with a three-year relationship that ended in September. “Heading into the winter season un-cuffed, I’m feeling a mix of excitement and sadness,” she says. “My ex and I spent the past three holiday seasons together, so my memories of him are tied up with the holiday season—plus, we started dating in the fall, so the real ‘honeymoon’ period of our relationship fell during the winter, with lots of Netflix dates, snuggling while it snowed outside, Baileys and hot chocolate. I’m worried that I’ll feel lonely in the face of the cold.” She’s not alone—breakups are never fun, but add to that the falling of leaves and dropping of temperatures, and that can exacerbate the blues. Here’s what Metzger suggests for healthy ways to cope.

More: What to Do When Your Guy Has Problems Below the Belt

Make Plans—Especially With Single Friends.

This is the moment to text all your unattached friends and make plans. “Meet them at happy hours, fun dinners, or go out dancing. This is the time to embrace the fun of being single.” And if you find yourself feeling especially sad at night alone in bed—a common sentiment, says Metzger—ask a friend if you can plan a throwback sleepover. “Sleeping at a friend’s house for a night works and there’s nothing wrong with a little company.” Generally, the importance of staying busy and active can’t be overstated. In order to avoid the impulse to binge eat and drink, Anita says she tries to stick to a healthy routine. “Going to the gym is important, it helps me keep my energy up and feel healthy,” she says. “I’ve been spending time with friends, going to movies and dinner, as well as spending lots of time alone, which is good, so I can focus on myself and think about what I want for my future.”

Avoid Obnoxiously Romantic Situations.

To the last point about seeking out your single friends, also take care to avoid being the third wheel on any hangs with happy couple friends. “It can depressing, especially when you walk back to your car alone and they go home to snuggle,” says Metzger. Um, yeah. Also, Netflix marathons can be a nice distraction at times—especially when it’s too frigid to go outside—but be mindful of which shows and movies you watch. “Avoid romantic movies. Rom coms are OK because they often are about single women and laughing is therapeutic,” says Metzger. “However, avoid romantic classics like ‘The Notebook’ because they’ll just remind you how not in love you are.” The same goes for movies about breakups. I remember seeing ‘Celeste and Jesse Forever’ in theaters shortly after ending a four-year relationship and wailing. Not helpful.

Date Around—But Don’t Aggressively Rebound.

Getting on swiping apps or going out with new romantic interests isn’t a bad idea, just be careful not to re-cuff yourself up before you’re ready, says Metzger. “Just be sure not to jump too deep, too quickly,” she says. “If you’re OK with casual sex or just having some company without the possibility of this being your next husband, go for it. If you’re too vulnerable and can predict you’re going to be a clinger after the first date, wait a little while before jumping back into the pool.” Smart. Anita seems to be on the same page. “I’ve had a couple rebounds and I’m out there on Tinder, but I haven’t gone on any real dates yet,” she says. “Who knows, maybe others’ fear of being un-cuffed this winter will push them to reach out more, be more approachable, and maybe it’ll be easier for me to meet someone! Still, I’m not going to force it, since this feels like the first phase of the recovery period which, for me, is all about indulgence and immersing myself in the sad reality. The only way to get out of it is to really get into it, feel every inch of the sadness, and then move forward.
