Something was totally off with Ryan Seacrest at the 2017 Golden Globes

Awards season has officially begun with the Golden Globes. The excitement is palpable, the fashion is to die for and the red carpet interviews are, well, mostly good. There was one red carpet host gathering a bit of attention, and not for the best reasons: Ryan Seacrest seemed a little awkward on the Golden Globes red carpet. For those watching, it was tough to tell why.

Seacrest, a seasoned interviewer and television host, looked a bit at sea while interviewing Golden Globes attendees. His wooden demeanor and tendency to mumble became very evident. When it came time to interview Michelle Williams, Seacrest appeared to mumble his questions, causing Williams to ask him whether he was whispering. It was a very weird moment.

But Williams' reaction to Seacrest appeared to be the normal reaction from celebrities and Twitter users alike. Whether people called him a "robot" or snarkily reacted to his rather silly interview questions, a lot of us were worried about Seacrest. You OK, my dude?

Amanda Peet and Sarah Paulson shared a Golden Globes red carpet kiss — right on the mouth!

Peet and Paulson were posing together on the red carpet when the smooch took place. Paulson was rocking a gorgeous gold Marc Jacobs dress, and Peet went for a burgundy gown for the evening.

It looks like Paulson's girlfriend, Holland Taylor, was unable to attend the award's show tonight, so Peet stepped in, as she has done before.

Back in December, Paulson also brought Peet to the 22nd Annual Critics' Choice Awards.

"Marcia wasn’t available,” Peet said at the time, referencing Paulson's nomination for her role as Marcia Clark in The People v. O.J. Simpson: American Crime Story. "I’ll take it! I’m sloppy seconds."

Paulson won her first Golden Globe in the category of Best Actress in a Limited Series or a Motion Picture Made for Television. She took the opportunity to thank the real Marcia Clark for her contributions during the O.J. Simpson trial.

"And to the remarkable Marcia Clark: You are an inspiration to me," Paulson said. "If I could live my life with a fraction of your wit, integrity, and your unapologetic fierceness, I would be on the road to doing it right."

Kelly Osbourne credits Robin Williams for saving Sharon Osbourne's life

Robin Williams may be gone, but his inspiration is still felt, especially by the Osbourne family.

More: Ozzy Osbourne's ex-manager calls BS on Ozzy's "split" from Sharon

In her upcoming book There's No Fucking Secret, Kelly Osbourne recounts a time Williams came to her house during the worst of Sharon Osbourne's cancer battle.

Kelly writes that Sharon was losing the battle, but when Williams came over, something changed.

He "climbed into bed with her... He stayed there all afternoon, and throughout the house, you could hear her cackling with laughter. Shortly after he left, she told us that she’d decided to go back and finish chemo... Robin Williams helped save Mum’s life."

And it's a good thing, too, because not only would Sharon probably have succumbed to the disease, but Sharon's husband, Ozzy Osbourne, might also be gone.

More: In one harsh tweet, Kelly Osbourne annihilated Ozzy Osbourne's hairdresser GF

Kelly also writes that Ozzy was so distraught over Sharon's cancer, at one point, he overdosed on pills.

After Sharon had a seizure during her cancer treatments, Kelly recounts, "Dad was there in his boxers, and I watched him scoop his hands into a bowl of pills, swallow a handful of something, and then wash it down with vodka."

Then, in the ambulance, Kelly explains, Ozzy “leaned over to put his hand out to see if Mum was breathing. Then he passed out with his hand over her mouth. The EMTs tried to pull him off, and Dad, not knowing where he was or what he was doing, started to resist out of habit. They pulled over the ambulance and started to call the police."

Kelly was able to convince them not to go to the police but ended up zip tying her father's hands to a bar to restrain him.

You can read the rest of Kelly's family stories in her book, which will be released April 25.

Jimmy Fallon's 2017 Golden Globes opening number was so meme-able

$

Jimmy Fallon probably just won the superlative of "Greatest Awards Show Cold Open Ever" with his 2017 Golden Globes introduction. It had everything: Evan Rachel Wood reprising her Westworld role, La La Land's opening musical number, Kit Harington pretending to be dead á la Jon Snow, and even Barb from Stranger Things rising from the depths of a pool. In short: this cold open was freaking amazing.

More: Something was totally off with Ryan Seacrest at the 2017 Golden Globes

I mean, does it get any better than an introduction modeled off of the amazing La La Land? Fallon made sure to hit on the film's many iconic moments, including the stuck-in-traffic opening number and the planetarium dance scene. He was joined by a ton of famous faces, including Nicole Kidman, Amy Adams, Rami Malek, the kids of Stranger Things, Tina Fey, and his bro-in-arms, Justin Timberlake. Everyone came together to create a purer-than-the-driven-snow opening that left you buzzing with pure joy.

HGTV's Chip Gaines challenges allegations he's against same-sex marriage

HGTV found itself in the midst of another controversy on Friday after a Buzzfeed article suggested Fixer Upper stars Chip and Joanna Gaines are against same-sex marriage.

Buzzfeed reports that the Gaines' church is firmly against same-sex marriage, but Chip is firing back at the claims.

More: Will we see Christina El Moussa's boyfriend Gary Anderson on Flip or Flop?

On Joanna's blog Magnolia Market, Chip posted his "New Year's Revelation."

"If there is any hope for all of us to move forward, to heal and to grow – we have got to learn to engage people who are different from us with dignity and with love," Chip wrote after discussing our "hurting" world. "Joanna and I have personal convictions. One of them is this: we care about you for the simple fact that you are a person, our neighbor on planet earth. It’s not about what color your skin is, how much money you have in the bank, your political affiliation, sexual orientation, gender, nationality or faith. That’s all fascinating, but it cannot add or take away from the reality that we’re already pulling for you."

He added, "We are not about to get in the nasty business of throwing stones at each other, don’t ask us to 'cause we won’t play that way."

The post goes on to inspire people, of all different backgrounds, to work together rather than focusing on their differences.

More: Can HGTV force Tarek and Christina El Moussa to stay together?

In a well-written and beautifully said call to action, Chip challenges readers to "roll up your sleeves and work alongside the very people that are most unlike you."

Now that's how to turn a potential scandal into something positive and readers took note.

"An articulate, inspiring and poignant statement filled with positive energy. I'm with you both!!" one commenter noted.

Another added, "What a great blog. I had not read any of the articles that were posted, after reading yours today, I do not need to. I am a 56 year old man and I classify proudly as homosexual, however I also consider myself a Christian. My husband and I have 2 wonderful daughters, both married to women, and five beautiful grandchildren. For many years I struggled with being both a homosexual and Christian, a few years ago I came to the realization that it was my internal struggle, and that I could be both."

Next time, Prince Jackson should ask his tattoo artist to spell-check

Prince Jackson got some sweet new ink. Or, well, it would have been sweet if it wasn't embarrassingly misspelled.

Jackson's new tattoo is styled like a plate of armor across his right shoulder and arm. He documented getting inked throughout the day, saying at one point that he'd spent eight hours in the chair and was still going.

More: What the heck? We can't believe people still think Michael Jackson is alive

Despite the fact that the tattoo artist had clearly sketched out the design ahead of time and had placed a temporary stencil over Jackson's skin prior to starting the design and Jackson was live-streaming the whole thing, Jackson still ended up with a serious typo problem.

The tattoo reads, "Do not go gentle in that good night."

More: Paris & Prince Jackson up their tattoo game with new ink honoring their dad

But the quote from the classic Dylan Thomas poem is actually "Do not go gentle into that good night."

prince jackson instagram pic tattoo 1

The second line of the poem also appears to have issues with the word "against."

The line is "Rage, rage against the dying of the light," but "against" appears to have been spelled "agenainft." Even if Jackson was going for an Old English version, something is seriously off about the word.

At least tattoo removal technology these days is pretty good.

Jackson has yet to address the spelling issues, but that tattoo artist better hope he had Jackson sign all of the appropriate paperwork. Otherwise, I smell a lawsuit coming on strong.

This, unfortunately, might be the biggest tattoo fail of all time.

Do you think Jackson intentionally misquoted the poem, or is his new tattoo a horrible fail?

Ryan Gosling is notoriously quiet about his family life with Eva Mendes and their two young daughters, but he took his Golden Globes 2017 win as an opportunity to gush about his little family.

More: Jimmy Fallon's 2017 Golden Globes opening number was so meme-able

"While I was singing and dancing and playing piano and having the best experience I ever had, my lady was raising our daughter, pregnant with our second and helping her brother battle cancer," Gosling said in his acceptance speech. "If she hadn't have done that, if she hadn't taken all of that on so that I could have this experience, it would surely be someone else other than me up here today. So, sweetheart, thank you. To my daughters, Amada and Esmerelda, I love you. And if I may, I'd like to dedicate this to the memory of her brother, Juan Carlos Mendes."

Needless to say, my ovaries will never be the same.

Print out Meryl Streep's Golden Globes speech and read it every day

Hands down, Meryl Streep had the best Golden Globes speech.

More: Was that just a friendly kiss Sarah Paulson gave Amanda Peet at the Golden Globes?

In her speech accepting the Cecil B. DeMille Lifetime Achievement Award, Streep took time to honor Hollywood, foreigners, and the press, all of which she indicated were crucial to society and to the future of the political landscape. Her speech was appreciative of the different people who come together to make films and tell stories reflective of our contemporary American landscape. She honored other women. She spoke truth to power. She brought the whole damn house down.

More: Meryl Streep's 10 fiercest characters

Here is the full transcript of her speech, which you should print out and read every day for the rest of 2017.

I love you all. You'll have to forgive me. I lost my voice in screaming and lamentation this weekend. And I lost my mind sometime earlier this year, so I have to read.

Thank you, Hollywood Foreign Press. Just to pick up on what Hugh Laurie said: You, and all of us in this room really, belong to the most vilified segment in society right now.

Think about it: Hollywood, foreigners, and the press. But who are we and what is Hollywood anyway? It's just a bunch of people from other places. I was born and raised and educated in the public schools of New Jersey. Viola [Davis] was born in a sharecropper's cabin in South Carolina, came up in Central Falls, Rhode Island. Sarah Paulson was born in Florida, raised by a single mom in Brooklyn. Sarah Jessica Parker was one of seven or eight kids from Ohio. Amy Adams was born in Vicenza, Italy, and Natalie Portman was born in Jerusalem. Where are their birth certificates? And the beautiful Ruth Negga was born in Addis Ababa, Ethiopia, raised in Lon— no, Ireland, I do believe, and she's here nominated for playing a small-town girl from Virginia. Ryan Gosling, like all the nicest people, is Canadian, and Dev Patel was born in Kenya, raised in London, and is here playing an Indian raised in Tasmania. So, Hollywood is crawling with outsiders and foreigners, and if we kick 'em all out, we'll have nothing to watch but football and mixed martial arts (which are not the arts).

An actor's only job is to enter the lives of people who are different from us and let you feel what that feels like. There were many, many, many powerful performances this year that did exactly that. Breathtaking, compassionate work. But there was one performance this year that stunned me. It sank its hooks in my heart, not because it was good — there was nothing good about it — but it was effective and it did its job. It made its intended audience laugh and show their teeth. It was that moment when the person asking to sit in the most respected seat in our country imitated a disabled reporter, someone he outranked in privilege, power and the capacity to fight back. It kind of broke my heart when I saw it, and I still can't get it out of my head because it wasn't in a movie. It was real life. And this instinct to humiliate, when it's modeled by someone in the public platform, by someone powerful, it filters down into everybody's life because it kind of gives everybody permission to do the same thing. Disrespect invites disrespect. Violence incites violence. When the powerful use their position to bully others, we all lose.

OK, this brings me to the press. We need the principled press to hold power to account, to call them on the carpet for every outrage. That's why our founders enshrined the press and its freedoms in our Constitution. So, I only ask the famously well-heeled Hollywood Foreign Press and all of us in our community to join me in supporting the committee to protect journalists because we're going to need them going forward and they'll need us to safeguard the truth.

One more thing. Once, when I was standing around on the set one day, whining about something — we were going to work through supper or the long hours — Tommy Lee Jones said to me, "Isn't it such a privilege, Meryl? To be an actor?" Yeah, it is, and we have to remind each other of the privilege and the responsibility of the act of empathy. We should all be very proud of the work Hollywood honors here tonight.

As my friend, the dear departed Princess Leia, said to me once: "Take your broken heart and make it into art." Thank you.

Raise a glass to the women of color who dominated the 2017 Golden Globes

$

Two women dominated the 2017 Golden Globes tonight, and deservedly so: Tracee Ellis Ross and Viola Davis. Both actors are women of color and currently at the top of their game. Their Golden Globe wins cemented (for Ross) and confirmed (for Davis) that fact. What their wins also confirmed was that, for women of color in Hollywood, representation in meaningful projects is possible — and better still, it is worthy of universal recognition.

More: #OscarsSoWhite: How this year's nominee diversity compares to previous years

Ross, for her part, was not only a first-time Golden Globe nominee for her role in ABC's Black-ish, she was also the first black woman to win an award for Best Performance by an Actress in a Television Series, Musical or Comedy, in more than 30 years. That superlative is indicative of how desperately times have needed to change in the landscape of film and television. It should go without saying that a 30-year interim is too long a dry spell for women of color in television to get their due, especially when we have a more diverse television environment than ever before.

More: Viola Davis brought the room to tears with her Emmys 2015 speech (VIDEO)

Davis accepted her Golden Globe and gave a speech that expressed the importance of representation and her role in that: "I believe that it's our responsibility to uphold what it is to be an American and what America is about and the true meaning of what it means to pursue the American dream. I think that America in and of itself has been an affirmation, but I think we've fallen short a lot because there's no way that we can have anyone in office that's not an extension of our own belief system. So, then, what does that say about us? And I think that, if you answer that question, I think that says it all."

Tracee Ellis Ross Golden Globes Win

Tracee Ellis Ross Golden Globes Win

Davis' words effectively answer the outrage that was the #OscarsSoWhite conversation in recent years. Where previous award seasons honored mostly white actors, these Golden Globes wins could be part of a rising tide toward equal awards favor.

Viola Davis 2017 Golden Globes

The wins for Davis' and Ross' respective work are an important step forward. For women of color in particular and for all women working in film and television, these wins prove that representation matters. For women of color, it is a major step forward to see Davis and Ross' work validated and honored, especially when that work is telling stories so deeply connected to gender and race in America.

Am I the only one who doesn't think La La Land deserved all those Golden Globes?

$
0
0

Let me start here by saying that I liked La La Land. I thought it was well written and an inspiring story. But when I saw it, I did not at all walk out of the theater thinking it was the award show sweeper it has become.

It won seven out of the 14 awards for movies in 2017! It won in every category it had a nomination.

More: Ryan Gosling's Golden Globes speech made Eva Mendes the real winner of the night

And there were a ton of great movies this year, like Moonlight, Fences, Lion and Loving.

Also, I really thought this was going to be the year for diversity with all of these films bringing the truth of humanity to the screen. And, yes, Viola Davis won Best Supporting Actress for Fences and Moonlight won Best Drama, but La La Land was so dominant in the film category that no one else really stood a chance. And it's a film that features predominantly white actors — except John Legend, who is such a seasoned musical performer that I thought he stole the scene from Gosling a fair few times, yet he got no award show credit.

Ryan Gosling GIF
Image: Buzzfeed

So what gives?

Well, La La Land did have a bit of an edge at the Globes because it was in the Musical or Comedy category, which means, for the most part, that it wasn't competing against expected big hitters like Fences and Manchester by the Sea.

In three out of the seven categories it won, La La Land's biggest competition was Florence Foster Jenkins and Deadpool. While those were also great films, La La Land is clearly the big winner in that matchup. Sorry, Ryan Reynolds.

More: Jimmy Fallon's 2017 Golden Globes opening number was so meme-able

I hope some good will come from La La Land's win. I hope we'll see more musicals like it cropping up. I hope the days of Gene Kelly and movies like Singing in the Rain will be reborn. I just don't think La La Land is the musical to trump all musicals.

I saw Hail, Caesar right around the time I saw La La Land, and they both share some similarities. Both are pictures of Hollywood, though in different time periods. And both have an all-star cast, participating in some beautiful song and dance numbers. But when I saw that musical number with Channing Tatum in Hail, Caesar, I thought, "Yes, yes! This is a musical number. This is musical performance."

Channing Tatum GIF
Image: Giphy

And while I think, overall, La La Land surpassed Hail, Caesar, I do not think the musicality of La La Land came even close to that one minute of awe I felt watching Channing Tatum dancing in Hail, Caesar. It left me wanting more from Gosling and Stone.

More: Something was totally off with Ryan Seacrest at the 2017 Golden Globes

It'll be interesting to see how things pan out at the Oscars this year when all of the films are pitted against one another rather than split between drama and comedy.

Were you obsessed with La La Land, or do you agree that other films were bigger standouts?

On the pill? Here's great news about your sex life

If you’re one of the 10-plus million American women on the pill, you may be a little worried about what’s going to happen when Trump takes office later this month—as in, will your birth control still be covered by insurance? While we don’t have an answer or solution to that conundrum just yet, we do have good news on a related front: The pill doesn’t have a negative impact on your sex drive after all, according to a new study published in the Journal of Sexual Medicine.

Research on the pill’s effect on libido has been mixed and inconclusive, but when women who take it do have low sex drives (as nearly half of us do, some research suggests), it’s often attributed to the hormones in the oral contraceptive. The new study, which examined more than 900 people, busts that myth.

The researchers explored how the pill affected women’s sex drives while single and in relationships, and found that the type of contraceptive used didn’t have a significant effect on libido. Instead, length and age of relationship was more likely to impact sex drive than hormonal or non-hormonal contraceptives.

“Sometimes women are looking for something to explain changes in their sexual desire, which is not fixed throughout their life,” says lead study author Kristen P. Mark, PhD, MPH. “The message that hormonal pills decrease desire is really prevalent. In my undergrad classes, my students often say they hear the pill makes you not want sex, ‘so what’s the point?’ Our findings are clear: the pill does not kill desire. This research helps to bust those myths and hopefully eventually get rid of this common cultural script in our society.”

Good to know, right? And hey, if you are struggling with low sex drive—whether or not you take the pill—you’re far from alone. Here are a few strategies to help you pinpoint why you’re feeling blah in bed.

Nicole Richie & Joel Madden just can't shake those divorce rumors

It may seem like Nicole Richie and Joel Madden have it all: successful careers, two beautiful children (a daughter Harlow, and a son, Sparrow) and a happy and healthy marriage. But according to a new report the latter may not be true.

More: For Nicole Richie and Joel Madden, their family is everything

The couple began dating back in 2006 and were married four years later in 2010, but after more than a decade together they're apparently headed for divorce, sources told InTouch Weekly. According to the publication, Richie and Madden's relationship is taking strain because of the stress that comes with juggling their careers and parenthood.

Both Madden and Richie are successful in their own rights, but according to the publication, Richie has become the family's breadwinner and this has caused Madden to allegedly feel intimidated by his wife.

"They have been arguing lately because Joel feels Nicole is working too much," the source told the publication, adding, "Joel has had a successful music career with his band, but Nicole’s become the family breadwinner. That leaves Joel feeling threatened."

These divorce rumors are persistent, with Radar Online reporting just last week that the couple's marriage is in crisis, and they noted separate occasions where both Madden and Richie were spotted out without their wedding rings (we'd like to point out that sometimes people forget to put on their rings, and that doesn't necessarily suggest that there's trouble in paradise). But according to the the publication, a friend of the couple's told them that they're trying to "salvage what is left of their marriage" after having a "super rough year."

A source also told the publication, "Nicole and Joel are basically living as co-parents right now."

It's been over three months since Kim Kardashian West was robbed at gunpoint in Paris, France, but her case has definitely not run cold. In fact, according to a new report from People magazine, there has been a major breakthrough, because French authorities revealed on Monday, Jan. 9, that 16 suspects were arrested in connection with the robbery.

According to the publication, the arrests took place in several different locations in Paris and surrounding cities in the early hours of Monday morning. It is believed that questioning is underway, and the suspects can be held for up to 96 hours before they must either be charged or released.

People magazine reports that "exploitable DNA" was found on a piece of jewelry, a diamond-encrusted Jacob & Co. Cross, that was dropped by the thieves during their getaway — it was found by a passerby and handed to the police. DNA from a second suspect was found inside Kardashian West's hotel room, this according to French newspaper, Le Monde. According to Le Monde, police had been monitoring these two suspects closely for several weeks prior to the arrests.

While the Paris prosecutor's office hasn't yet commented on the arrests, according to People, they have learned that some of the suspects have already been brought before two magistrates for questioning while the investigation continues.

Betty White is the beloved spunky, sassy grandma we all had or wish we had. And for many of us, it all started with her endearing character from The Golden Girls, Rose, who was well-intentioned but dim-witted (and we mean that in the nicest way possible, of course).

Boy, we could have watched them all day, but visiting hours were only from 10 to 4."

Is Rose rebellious?

So Nicki Minaj & Meek Mill's breakup had nothing to do with cheating?

Last week, Nicki Minaj confirmed (after a month of speculation) that she and Meek Mill had ended their relationship — but now we've discovered that their split couldn't have happened at a worse time.

More: DraLo fans have nothing to worry about, even if Drake is texting Nicki Minaj

According to TMZ, sources close to Minaj and Mill revealed that they broke up during Minaj's birthday weekend last month (she turned 34 on Dec. 8) while on a luxury getaway in Turks and Caicos. Apparently, Mill was not paying attention to Minaj during the trip, and she got very angry and confronted him, resulting in him leaving the island without her.

Minaj then reportedly said "screw this," and that was the end of the breakup — which is actually surprising because ever since the news broke that the couple had called it quits there have been several dramatic reports about their breakup, including allegations of cheating.

More: Nicki Minaj & Meek Mill's arguments are so public and so uncomfortable

According to TMZ, there are reports that Mill was cheating on Minaj with a woman named Sonye Rasool, but Rasool told the publication that she and Mill reportedly hooked up years prior to his relationship with Minaj, and that no cheating took place. She is reportedly also planning to file defamation lawsuits against several outlets.

So, while no cheating took place, and the reason for Mill's and Minaj's split was actually far less dramatic than most thought, could this mean that they may rekindle their romance in the future?

While we can't say that this will never happen, the couple doesn't appear to be in any hurry to kiss and make up, and Mill's cryptic Instagram posts seem to be throwing major shade at Minaj and their breakup. Most recently, he took to Instagram to share a photo of three pairs of legs (one of which is of a woman) along with the caption, "I'm wayyyy too picky now" — which has, unsurprisingly, sparked a reaction from fans.

Nicole Kidman reveals that she wants another baby

Nicole Kidman has revealed her desire to expand her family. The actress is still hoping to put several heartbreaks behind her and have another baby at the age of 49.

Kidman already has four kids — adopted children Isabella, 25, and Connor, 21, with ex-husband Tom Cruise, and daughters Sunday Rose, 8, and Faith, 5, with husband Keith Urban.

More: I chose to get pregnant at 47 — and yes, I know the risks

Speaking to Event magazine, Kidman admitted she once thought she would never be able to give birth due to fertility problems, and that it was "against the odds" when she conceived Sunday Rose naturally. Her youngest child, Faith, was born via surrogate.

But Kidman remains hopeful. "I still have the faintest hope that something may happen to me this year," she said. "Keith and I would love to have more babies. My grandmother gave birth to my mother at 49. I would be beyond happy and just welcome it with open arms. Children are the joy of my life."

What are the chances of a woman getting pregnant over the age of 45? It's not impossible, but it's very rare. The chances of a 45-year-old woman getting pregnant are less than 1 percent each month. However, because the decline in fertility is related to a woman's eggs and not her uterus, healthy eggs can greatly boost her chances of getting pregnant. Most fertility clinics advise women who want to conceive between the age of 46 and 50 to use eggs donated by a younger woman. The American Society for Reproductive Medicine suggests that after the age of 45, IVF using donor eggs is the only "reasonable alternative."

If Kidman's wish comes true and she does have another child, she's certainly not alone. Many celebrity mothers have had kids in their late 40s. Kelly Preston had son Benjamin with husband John Travolta at 48. National Lampoon's Vacation star Beverly D'Angelo had twins at 49 with then-65-year-old boyfriend Al Pacino in 2001. Geena Davis had daughter Alizeh at 46 and twin boys Kian and Kaiis at 48. CNN anchorwoman Nancy Grace was also 48 when she had twins Lucy and John. Halle Berry had her second child Maceo with ex-husband Olivier Martinez at 47. And earlier this month, Janet Jackson welcomed son Eissa at 50.

Kentucky lawmaker tells women unplanned pregnancies are an 'opportunity'

A Kentucky Republican legislator has instructed women to embrace their pregnancies — whether or not they are planned.

“[Unplanned pregnancy] should not be looked at as an inconvenience, but rather, I would submit, as an opportunity,” state Sen. Brandon Smith said while commenting on Senate Bill 5, which bans abortions after 20 weeks of pregnancy.

More: Ohio may adopt the most restrictive abortion law in the country

SB 5 — similar to the recent legislation signed into law in neighboring Ohio — passed by a 36 to 6 vote in the Kentucky Senate. Meanwhile, the Kentucky House voted 82 to 13 for House Bill 2, which requires doctors to perform an ultrasound on any women seeking an abortion.

This immediate focus on restricting women’s reproductive health access comes as a surprise to no one, despite the fact that Republican lawmakers insisted they would focus on jobs and Kentucky’s economy in 2017.

More: No, Republicans: Defunding Planned Parenthood will definitely not save money

Democratic lawmakers in Kentucky objected to SB 5, clarifying that the state should not be permitted to force a woman to carry her pregnancy to term, regardless of whether or not she’s a victim or incest or rape or is otherwise prepared to have a baby.

“Really, how women deal with that is between women, their families and their god,” said Sen. Reginald Thomas, D-Lexington, told the Lexington Herald Leader. He predicted that passing this bill will force women into “back-alley butcher shops” by making legal abortions difficult to obtain.

The strategy of stripping women’s access to abortion and other health care has been a trend among Republicans so far in 2017 — not a great sign considering we’re less than two weeks in.

I thought she was my best friend until I had to ghost her

She had one of the most exhilarating personalities of anyone I had ever met. She made me feel like the most important person in the world.

At first, she invited me to tag along to all of her events, insisting on the host’s invitation being extended to me. At first, she told me her deepest secrets. At first, she felt like my best friend. We were seen at every event together. Some would joke that we were “chained at the hip.”

“Like two peas in a pod,” they would say with a smile.

The speed of our friendship progressed much faster than I had anticipated – but I'd let her take the lead and dictate the rules of the friendship. I was still learning about myself, still figuring out how to be an adult. And her confidence in every decision she made had me feeling safe and protected.

More: How to know when it's really time to leave your marriage

But then things started changing. I took a step back from this intoxicating relationship, and just observed. Notice how she glossed over mistakes she had made, but magnified identical mistakes others made towards her.

Notice how she would insist that someone was out to get her, when no one really was. Notice how she would cower at the face of conflict, yet react with explosive rage at a trivial slight.

I can’t quite put my finger on where “rock bottom” was in our friendship, it might have been one of the many times she suggested I divorce my husband, because we had an argument. It might have been the time she announced that she was going to try and go for a job I had said I was interested in and had been working toward for months. Or maybe it was the time she managed to make herself the center of attention at a friend’s funeral.

But most likely it was the time, when during a busy lunch hour, she screamed at me in a tone and volume that had me cowering underneath her. Tucking my chin into my shoulder, trying to shield myself from her rage, I listened to her scream, “How dare you suggest that I go back to my abusive husband? Is that what you want me to do, Jenn? Go back to my sexually, psychologically and physically abusive husband? HUH? IS IT?!!” (Full disclosure: Her ex is none of those adjectives. None.)

“No…no….no, it, it, it’s not that. I, I, I just…” I muttered, incapable of forming a complete sentence.

Everyone around us was in a stunned silence, many gazing in our direction. I was humiliated and scared. I couldn’t believe she would do that to me, and yet I kept the friendship going for six more years. I would do my best to build her up through her hatred of her ex moving on, through the day-after-day of some devastating situation that would always present itself to her. Every time I tried to make her happy, but I couldn't make that happiness last.

More: The moment I realized I was polyamorous

I should have seen the signs — they were always present. One would assume I would have noticed the signs even in the sociology and psychology courses I took in college: the possessiveness, the overly demanding needs, the emotional drain.

Florence Isaacs, author of Toxic Friends/True Friends, states, “A friendship is between two peers.” We were peers at one point, but could it be that something shifted and we no longer were? Certainly, there are friendships that exist among dissimilar individuals. But is the relationship mutually beneficial if the two are no longer so analogous?

Charles Figley, Ph.D, professor and director of the Psychological Stress Research Program at Florida State University, states that in order to extricate yourself from the toxic relationship, you first must take responsibility. “It's a pleaser personality — you want people to like you, you want to get along, and it's hard to say no. But you can pay the price in one way by having toxic friends." I am a classic example of a people pleaser, pushing my needs aside to make someone else happy.

So I did what I needed to do. I took responsibility for my part in this friendship. And when an opportunity presented itself for me to withdraw, I slowly slipped away. I tried limiting my interaction with her, but that only made her anger grow. And when I put my spouse before her, in a move that furthered her vitriol, she announced to her immediate world, “During the tough times in life, you get to see the true colors of your friends.” It would have been easier had she just told me I was being a bad friend.

When she attempted to play games through e-mail, social media, and mutual friends, I didn’t play along. I kept silent. I melted into the background, hoping that she would move on.

I ghosted the friendship, because I didn’t see any other way out.

And the thing is, she’s not a bad person. She is a kind soul and I feel empathy for her. Underneath that thick layer of self-indulgent indignation lies a hurt little girl. Someone who needs validation. Someone who needs the spotlight that I can’t give her. I can’t keep reserving that spotlight just for her. I had been alienating my friends, my family, and my spouse for too many years, all because she needed me.

More: The secret to introvert-extrovert marriages

I don’t regret getting out of the friendship. I don’t regret the peace I now feel every day knowing I don’t have to be subjected to another tantrum . I don’t regret the happiness I enjoy without her. I don’t regret how my marriage has blossomed now that she is no longer the center of my universe.

Yet, I feel guilt. Guilt that I couldn’t help her. Guilt that I am not there to soothe another heartbreak and another loss. Guilt that I just can’t do anything about her need for attention and affirmation. Guilt that I just can’t be a good enough friend for her.

It’s just that I can’t... and I don’t want to.
