Get ready to love Felicia Day more than you already do

By now, you probably know that Supernatural star Felicia Day is hilarious, adorable and basically every sci-fi lover's dream woman. But if you think you know everything about her, you're wrong. We dug a little deeper — and even got to chat with Day — to find out more about her.

More: Felicia Day talks in depth about why she wrote her memoir

Prepare yourself to be even more obsessed with the Geek & Sundry mastermind than you already are.

1. She's the queen of keeping secrets

Felicia Day instagram 1

On Jan. 3, Day announced that she has a baby on the way. And she's due in three weeks. What?!

In this day and age, it's nearly impossible for a celeb to keep a baby bump or pregnancy news off the internet, but somehow Day pulled it off.

2. She loves the Ren Faire

Felicia Day instagram 2

Felicia Day instagram 2

And you thought you couldn't love her any more. Anybody who frequents a renaissance festival holds a special place in our hearts.

3. She wants to take the stigma out of romance novels

Day openly admits she loves romance novels. In fact, she and her friends get together regularly (sometimes on the internet in the form of the Vaginal Fantasy Book Club) to have a few drinks and discuss their current romance favorite. Day loves all genres of books, but she is especially protective of the romance genre because of how often it is dismissed.

"I love romance novels," Day told SheKnows in 2015. "They're a guilty pleasure of mine. It's like reality TV. I think a lot of people are ashamed of talking about it in a public way because it's looked down upon and I just don't think that's valid. It's the most popular, best-selling genre out there and it doesn't really get any respect at all. If I can make it easier for you to say you read romance novels, then that's my goal."

2. Day was homeschooled by her mom

Since her father's job required the family to move around, Day's mother decided to home-school her kids, which led to a different but rewarding learning experience for Day. While being home-schooled allowed Day to pursue many of her passions, it also meant she had some problems when it came to socializing with other kids her age. "I had a lot of funny things happen to me as a kid," Day said. "Going to camp and not having any way to relate to the other kids because they went to school and knew each other. I guess staring from the outside in has been a theme of my life, and that's why belonging is so important, and knowing you can create a community no matter who you are."

3. Her future includes directing

Day is an established actress thanks to roles on Buffy the Vampire Slayer, Supernatural and Eureka, and is a proven force to be reckoned with in the world of web series, where she created The Guild and founded Geek & Sundry. Day is always looking for her next adventure, though, and she wants to add directing to her résumé soon.

4. And writing more books

Another dream? Writing more books. "I would definitely like to write a fiction book," Day revealed. "I'm definitely done with talking about myself, but a fiction book — either a YA or a romance novel — is definitely on my radar in the next couple of years. It's a big project to take on, but now that I've got the book-writing bug, I don't know if I'm going to be able to shake it long-term."

5. She is not great at doing shots

During her four seasons guest-starring as Charlie Bradbury, Day became a part of the Supernatural family (and yes, if they ask her to return she would definitely go back). Of course, during that time she collected her share of set stories. Her favorite occurred while filming the Season 10 episode "There's No Place Like Home."

"I was playing two different versions of myself, an evil and a good version. So the evil version was very aggressive with Dean, who is played by Jensen Ackles, who is one of the nicest, most wonderful people I have ever met. Basically, there's a scene where I'm at the bar and I had to steal one of Jensen's shot glasses and steal his shot and throw it back. Unfortunately, having been home-schooled and a very Goody Two-shoes, I had never done a shot before properly. I had always kind of sipped them, so there was an angle on him and I threw back a shot in the scene acting all tough and I threw it back all over my face. I didn't want to break the moment, so I just kept staring at him in a very hostile manner with water dripping down my face, and he is the most consummate professional you've ever met, so he didn't break, but I did see the right side of his mouth twitch just a tiny bit."

6. She is all about helping the representation of women in the entertainment realm progress

After seeing the most recent Mission Impossible movie, Day was taken aback that there were no women in positions of power. Even the powerful background characters, who were congressional members and prime ministers, were men. Day saw the casting as yet another lost opportunity to increase the visibility of women in a variety of roles on screen.

"I know people act like it is unreasonable to point these things out, that you are making a mountain out of a molehill, but especially in entertainment, we have a lot of power in the way we show people how the world is," she told us. "That kind of representation can change people's perceptions in a small way about what a congressional member can be or who a prime minister can be. To me, pointing those things out in a way that says, 'Hey, this could be different,' most people will embrace the differences and the idea that you could do something differently."

7. She is an amazingly skilled violinist

Day hasn't had much occasion to use her violin on-screen, but in her memoir You're Never Weird on the Internet (Almost), she reveals that her skill as a violinist earned her a scholarship to the University of Texas and a get out of high school free card.

8. The two reasons she was most excited about seeing her book released will make you grin

Day loves interacting with fans, and she revealed that getting to talk with them during her 12-city book tour made her more excited than anything.

Any writer or bookworm will be able to relate to the second reason Day is glad her book is out in the world, though.

"I'm actually a huge reader. I grew up reading books to fill the hours of being a homeschooled kid," she said. "My mother was always really encouraging of reading all the time, and learning. That's an organic part of my life that makes me secretly thrilled to see my book in the airport or on a bookshelf. It's definitely going to be a giant check mark on my bucket list that is checked off."

9. She can be super philosophical

While she fully embraces her geek side and is a funny, charming person, Day is not afraid to get real about the important stuff. When talking about what she wanted to get out of writing her memoir, Day said, "I tried to put as much authenticity of my soul in it, because you never know if you are going to be able to tell your story again."

Jennifer Lopez got a big win in the case against her alleged stalker

There can be a very dark side to stardom, and Jennifer Lopez has experienced it first hand.

More: Jennifer Lopez took a moment to reflect on her year, full of "ups and downs"

According to Us Weekly, on Tuesday, Jan. 3, Lopez's lawyers filed documents in the Los Angeles Superior Court against a man who has reportedly been stalking her. The man in question, Timothy McLanahan, reportedly has a history of violence, and according to the publication, he has previously sent Lopez flowers and has even been arrested for driving onto her property.

More: Marc Anthony's divorce could mean hope for a Jennifer Lopez reunion

"Suspect has driven his vehicle onto victim's property and wants to see her and was arrested, follows victim by his own admission, suspect has history of violence and suspect continues to send mail and flowers to victim," Mary Hern, the court's director of public information, told Us Weekly.

But, luckily for Lopez, she has been granted a temporary restraining order against McLanahan, who must now stay 100 yards away from her and her twins, Max and Emme, as well as their school and the family home.

More: DraLo is for real but Jennifer Lopez isn't trying to make Drake her BF

According to TMZ, Lopez's bodyguard also made a statement claiming that McLanahan is, according to the publication, "a transient who has been arrested for threats and firearms violations."

However, this new restraining order will hopefully serve as some sort of a deterrent and make Lopez and her family feel a little safer in the future.

11 times Ellen DeGeneres has significantly changed lives

$
0
0

Last year, Ellen DeGeneres was honored as the People's Choice Awards' Favorite Humanitarian — and we learned that she has given away way more than $50 million dollars on her show.

We knew that DeGeneres had been charitable and generous for years, but with a talk show that has been on television since 2003, winning 38 Emmys and 14 People's Choice Awards, it hadn't dawned on anyone the astronomical amount of money DeGeneres has given away.

But now we know that she has raised $12.5 million for breast cancer, more than $10 million for families affected by Hurricane Katrina, and more than $21 million to individuals and families who shared their stories with her. DeGeneres has even inspired her audience to donate more than $35 million of their own. And that's just the tip of the iceberg.

More: Ellen DeGeneres is not here for Kim Burrell's homophobia

Here are just a few of the many, many surprising and inspiring moments when DeGeneres changed lives.

1. The moment DeGeneres and Britney Spears gave back to their home state

Ellen and Britney donate to Louisiana

Ellen and Britney donate to Louisiana

DeGeneres and Spears both hail from Louisiana and gave back in a big way after the state experienced devastating floods in 2016. Spears donated a $125,000 emergency-response vehicle, while DeGeneres sent a $125,000 gift to a middle school for rebuilding efforts.

2. The moment she changed the lives of elementary students in Detroit

Ellen Spain Elementary

Ellen Spain Elementary

Before DeGeneres helped out Spain Elementary School in Detroit, the building was decrepit and the students were relying on archaic technology to learn with. Things were so bad, in fact, that most of the kids didn't even have books.

That all changed when DeGeneres and Lowe's donated over $500,000 to help to rebuild the school. On top of that, Justin Bieber appeared on the show and offered $1 from every one of his tickets sold to Spain Elementary.

3. The moment she and Ryan Reynolds helped out his favorite charity

Ryan Reynolds on Ellen

Ryan Reynolds on Ellen

DeGeneres so kindly offered to set Reynolds up with $25,000 for the Make-A-Wish Foundation if he stepped into her studio dunk tank. That's what you call a win for everyone.

4. The moment DeGeneres and Dierks Bentley gave a military family living in poverty $50,000

Sgt. Chad Sparks and his wife, Ashley, had a newborn baby. Yet, medical expenses made the small family penniless. We learned that Sparks was injured in Afghanistan during his first deployment, yet here he was about to be deployed a second time, leaving his wife and baby behind with no money. Ashley wrote in to DeGeneres telling her they had to sell the baby's things as well as their own (appliances, coffee pot and even parts of their car) to feed themselves. DeGeneres and country singer Dierks Bentley said they couldn’t allow that to happen and gave the Sparks a check for $50,000.

5. The moment her Oscar selfie raised $3 million

You are likely one of the 3.3 million people who retweeted DeGeneres' famous Oscar selfie featuring Jennifer Lawrence, Bradley Cooper, Meryl Streep, Brad and Angie, Kevin Spacey, Julia Roberts, and for no apparent reason, Lupita Nyong'o's brother. Since the photo was taken with a Samsung phone, Samsung agreed to donate a dollar for every retweet to the charity of DeGeneres' choice. She chose two: St. Jude's Children's Hospital and The Humane Society, so Samsung gave each charity $1.5 million apiece.

6. The moment DeGeneres became way more generous than Santa

DeGeneres received a letter from Amy Phillips of Rigby, Idaho, who said that in a crushing economy, and with seven kids, she often hasn't enough money for food. With a steep mortgage and car payments, she and her husband can't stay above water. She realized that with Christmas coming, she wouldn't have anything left to put gifts under the tree for her children. While DeGeneres likely gets more letters than Santa, she gave the Phillips family $28,000 worth of stuff for Christmas. She gave them everything from her 12 days of Christmas list, which included iPads, TVs and generous gift certificates.

7. The moment DeGeneres introduced us to a pizza man helping the homeless

Not only did DeGeneres give, she told us about others who were doing the same. In January 2015, we learned of Mason Wartman. Wartman quit his job on Wall Street to move home to Philly and open a pizza shop. One day, a customer came in saying he would like to "pay it forward" by buying a slice for the homeless man sitting outside. The next customer wanted to do the same and so on and so on. Wartman decided to allow customers to buy a slice for a hungry person by putting a post-it on the wall with their name on it. When a hungry or homeless person came in, they could pay for a slice with that post-it. By the time DeGeneres featured him, he had given away 8,500 slices in the nine months the program was underway. After being on DeGeneres' show, Wartman's story went viral and by June 2015, he had given away more than 23,000 slices.

8. The moment DeGeneres spent an entire season helping her viewers

Helping a person here and there was great. Giving to charity and families in need was even better, but do you know what was the very best? Dedicating an entire season to helping viewers in need, and that is what the The Ellen DeGeneres Show did in Season 10. It would be too much to tell you story after story of DeGeneres' generosity that year, so I will narrow it down to one heartbreaking story. Kim Ledbetter is a single mom from Birmingham, Alabama, who not only has her kids but is raising a niece. Kim was laid off a year and a half earlier and has been struggling to find work. All they wanted was a new microwave since theirs had broken. DeGeneres did give them a new microwave, but it had $20,000 inside. The family was knocked off their feet and grateful…and then DeGeneres gave Kim and her family a brand-new car.

9. The one of many moments DeGeneres saved an animal's life

Not only does DeGeneres regularly feature dogs in need of homes and people who have risked their own lives to rescue animals, a visit to the DeGeneres TV show page reveals that the bulk of her charitable giving goes to these most vulnerable creatures. Her current effort is for the Gentle Barn, a home and hospital for abused animals, which has received millions from her and from her viewers. DeGeneres and her wife, Portia, have adopted two cows, named Holy and Madonna. She gives us regular cow updates on her show. DeGeneres also is an advocate for local dog rescues, Farm Sanctuary, saving elephants and seals along with dozens of other charitable efforts for animals.

10. The moment she and Ben Affleck decided to feed a nation

DeGeneres likes to give to existing charities rather than start her own. But she couldn't resist when actor Ben Affleck asked her to help him create the American version of the Small Change Campaign, a charity that has benefited children in Germany and Southeast Asia since 1987. This particular campaign funds Feeding America, the nation's leading domestic hunger-relief charity. Determined to end hunger in America, DeGeneres and Affleck ask that you give to others by donating spare change through Coinstar machines.

11. The moment DeGeneres chose St. Jude's for the Walgreens $100,000 donation

That moment happened at the 2016 People's Choice Awards. In her speech, DeGeneres said that, "kindness is an innate quality," and that we all need to "be kind to one another." So, as part of the humanitarian award, DeGeneres had the opportunity to select one charity to receive a $100,000 donation from Walgreens. She chose a charity that she has been a part of for many years, St. Jude's Children's Research Hospital.

This explains why when her friend Melissa McCarthy introduced her at the PCAs, she said, "When she hears about anyone in need, anywhere, she is the first to step in and help them."

Sweet DeJesus, another Teen Mom is pregnant.

This time, it's Briana DeJesus, who appeared on Teen Mom 3. The show was canceled after only one season in 2013, but nonetheless, its teenage mothers remain in the public domain for having plastic surgery, falling out with their exes and, of course, having babies.

Mara Lane and Jonathan Rhys Meyers have a baby boy

When we found out Jonathan Rhys Meyers was going to be a dad back in December, we didn't realize the baby would arrive only days later. But it did — and Rhys Meyers and his fiancée Mara Lane now have a son.

According to E! News, the couple welcomed baby boy Wolf at their LA home on Dec. 15, possibly only hours after this baby bump pic was posted to Lane's Instagram.

Anyway, back to the name. Wolf is not your typical moniker — although among celebrities, there's definitely a trend forming toward naming your baby after the more aggressive creatures. Forget Kitten, Bunny and Robin — we're talking Bear (Kate Winslet and Ned Rocknroll), Fox (Dan Carter and Honor Dillon), Hawk (Tony Romo and Candice Crawford) and, of course, new baby Wolf.

Perhaps they'll call him Wolfie, which sounds slightly cuddlier, but only slightly.

These Netflix hacks will take your bingeing to a whole new level

$

For 81 million of us, Netflix is the only way to watch TV nowadays. No commercials, no waiting forever for a new episode, no shortage of options. Just pure bliss. But if you think you've already reached your peak level of Netflix-viewing pleasure, you might be wrong.

There are actually a ton of secret hacks that can maximize Netflix's convenience and entertainment even more than before. Psh, we know it sounds impossible — but it's true.

More: 100 words from Urban Dictionary that changed the world

Netflix Hacks
Image: Terese Condella/SheKnows

1. Discover hidden categories (and hours of unwatched TV and movies)

Netflix
Image: Netflix

While this hack isn’t brand new, it is one that even the most devoted binge-watchers may have missed. Netflix organizes their content into genres, making it easy for users to browse through the library from the TV or computer screen. But not all of their categories are listed on the Netflix home screen. Finding these secret Netflix categories is as simple as changing the numbers at the end of a Netflix genre URL that is located on the home screen. So, you have a URL that looks like this: www.netflix.com/browse/genre/6839, and all you need to do is change the last two numbers randomly until you find a category that grabs your interest.

If you aren’t sure you have the time or dedication to discover all of Netflix’s hidden genres yourself, you can take a peek at an official list.

2. Tweak your streaming speed to avoid buffering

Is there anything more annoying than having your favorite show interrupted by buffering? Well this hack allows you to tweak your streaming speed to avoid buffering altogether. To access the menu that controls these settings, hit Shift+Alt+Left Click on your PC or Shift+Option+Click on your Mac. Within that menu, select the “stream manager” option and change your playback to match up with your buffering rate. This should keep buffering from interrupting your viewing in the future.

More: These funny road signs are a trip (pun very much intended)

3. Create different profiles

Netflix
Image: Netflix

Whether you are sharing your Netflix account with a roommate, a spouse or your kids, it can be frustrating sifting through recommendation after recommendation that is based on someone else’s viewing habits. In 2013, Netflix added a feature that allows users to create up to five profiles for each account.

To create a profile, select the "Manage Profiles" option in the top right corner of your screen and create a unique name for your profile. To influence the recommendations that appear within that profile, simply make sure you are using that profile to watch all of your favorite shows and movies.

4. Delete your viewing history

Netflix
Image: Netflix

We all have our guilty pleasure shows, but we might not all want our viewing choices broadcasted to every other person sharing our account. If you found yourself watching Katy Perry: Part of Me one Friday night, simply follow these tips to erase all proof from your Netflix account.

The easiest way to erase your guilty pleasures from your Netflix account is to delete your profile completely. Once a profile is deleted, the viewing history from that profile will be deleted as well. If you were using your main account at the time, you will have to completely delete your account and re-subscribe. Now, that is a lot of work so you’ll have to decide how important protecting your reputation is to you.

More: Netflix hacks for families who want to make movie night a little more chill

5. Watch your shows in HD

Netflix has made it possible for subscribers to watch their favorite TV shows and movies in high definition. To switch to HD, head into your account settings and select the option labeled "Playback Settings." Under the option called "Data Usage," switch your preference to "High." Make sure you hit save before you hurry off to watch with your new, beautifully clear picture.

6. Rate everything to improve your recommendations

Netflix
Image: Netflix

The more you rate, the better idea Netflix has of what you're actually into. If you hated a movie, don't move on without giving it one star. It literally takes five seconds and makes a world of difference when you're ready to start browsing for your next obsession.

7. Download your favorites for the times you're out of range

Netflix just announced a new feature that allows users to download movies and shows for the times when Wi-Fi isn't a possibility. Commuting just got a whole lot better.

8. Don't bear the agony of pixilation

Netflix
Image: Netlifx

If your internet is acting up, chances are the video quality of whatever you're watching on Netflix will deteriorate into an unbearable mess of pixels. Luckily, there's a way to fight this. While the show or movie you're playing is open in the browser, hit Control+Shift+Alt+S (or Control+Shift+Option+S if you're on a Mac). Some columns will pop up, so look for the one that says "video bitrate." Highlight the highest number possible and click "override." Highlight more than one number and go with the top five to give Netflix some options when trying to avoid extreme pixilation. But remember: There's a reason why Netflix downgrades on the video quality. If your computer can't handle HD at the moment, expect some buffering.

It's not just Flip or Flop that makes Christina El Moussa pretty cool

Flip or Flop star Christina El Moussa broke the hearts of HGTV fans everywhere when she and now-ex Tarek announced their decision to split over the holiday season. Here are some things to know about the realty reality star as she begins a new chapter in her life.

1. She was originally an agent

Christina was a real estate agent in California when she met Tarek. In addition to their TV show, the couple owns The El Moussa Group.

2. She has a second talent to fall back on

Christina El Moussa yoga

Christina El Moussa yoga

Now that she and Tarek are divorcing and Flip or Flop is dunzo, Christina is going to need a side gig to keep bringing in the cash. Luckily, she has another talent: She's quite the yogi! In fact, Christina already released a prenatal yoga video during her second pregnancy called Prenatal Power Yoga.

3. She opened up about her fertility struggle

Christina El Moussa baby

Heartbreak struck when Christina tried to conceive her second child. After Tarek's thyroid cancer treatment led the couple to try in vitro, their first attempt failed and their second resulted in miscarriage. "They said that if you go through radiation, which Tarek had too, then you should not get pregnant from that sperm from six months to a year. So, right away, we did sperm banking and [tried] IVF," she told People. "I had to be super strict," says Christina. "I had to do one full week in bed. For 13 weeks after that, I couldn't go for a walk and couldn't lift anything over a gallon of milk. We planned it during Christmas break so I wasn't working. We did everything we could to make sure this one worked."

4. She may already have a new boyfriend

The ink barely had time to dry on the tabloids reporting her split from Tarek when rumors started flying Christina already has a new boyfriend: Gary Anderson, a contractor who did some work on the couple's backyard. Sounds a little scandalous until you hear that Tarek is now dating the couple's former nanny, Alyssa Logan.

5. She's still filming Flip or Flop

Christina El Moussa filming

Christina El Moussa filming

Despite the earth-shattering divorce news, Christina is still filming new episodes of Flip or Flop — but not for long. The new filming is only to fulfill the terms of their current contract, and when that's done, so is the show.

6. Her own home reno was very personalized

Christina El Moussa home gym

When Christina and Tarek renovated their own family home — which was neither a flip nor a flop — they gutted two bedrooms and in their place created one big home gym. It's unclear what will happen to their dream gym when their divorce is settled.

They've been married nearly four years and they have a 1-year-old son, but Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel still act like teenage lovebirds.

More: All 40 rumors we've heard about Justin Timberlake and Jessica Biel

The couple took a night off this week to see the Memphis Grizzlies, a team Timberlake has had a minority ownership stake in since 2012, play the Los Angeles Lakers. They were spotted in their VIP box with some friends, but Timberlake and Biel only had eyes for each other.

Throughout the game, they stayed close. Biel was dancing in front of Timberlake for a lot of the game, and even though Timberlake's team lost 102 to 116 to the Lakers, they seemed to be having a total blast.

No, Mariah Carey's ex-husband, she does not need your career advice

$

Mariah Carey's ex-husband is seriously worried about her career right now.

More: Mariah Carey's manager is reportedly causing serious drama

After her disastrous New Year's Eve performance, Carey has "parted ways" with her creative director and longtime choreographer, Anthony Burrell, who apparently made the call to remove her backup singers from the stage to make room for more dancers. That, sources say, doomed the performance when Carey's earpiece wasn't working and she wasn't able to hear the music well enough to sing.

"Had [the backup singers] been on stage, they could have heard the music and picked up for Mariah and saved the performance," an insider explained. Another source insisted that Burrell "was not fired" and "Mariah does not blame him for what happened. He just made a bad decision about something that actually mattered that evening."

If anyone's career can survive that, it's Carey's. But her ex-husband, Tommy Mottola, doesn't exactly agree. In fact, he penned a letter to Page Six insisting that Carey needs serious help.

"MC is arguably the greatest pop voice to come along in the last three decades. She has had more number one hits than any pop artist in history!!! She is a global icon and a treasure with incredible talent not only as a singer but as a great songwriter. What happened on NYE could’ve happened to anyone! Yes, her technical people should’ve helped pay more attention to all of it so that there was no chance of that happening," he wrote.

Carey and Mottola were married from 1993 to 1998 after he helped launch her career in 1990 with the release of "Vision of Love."

Mottola continued, "My only advice is that she should hire more seasoned and respected professionals to surround her and help her with her career! I would never have encouraged her or guided her to do something like a reality television show!!!!! I don’t get it!! That does absolutely nothing for her integrity, her credibility, or her massive talent!! She should take a step back, think carefully and figure out what to do next. That is what she does best... most certainly none of these issues or problems ever existed with her in her early days at Sony for the first 10 years when she skyrocketed to global superstardom!! Where absolutely meticulous and methodical attention was paid to every single detail and nuance that went on into her career!"

Still, Mottola thinks Carey can salvage her career.

"It could have happened to anyone and it has, so everyone should just get off her back and leave her the hell alone and hopefully she will find her way to the right professionals for guidance. It’s never about the fall, it’s all about the recovery," he said.

More: Mariah Carey's people say she was framed in New Year's Eve singing disaster

Meanwhile, Carey's camp is firing back at him. Carey's manager, Stella Bulochnikov's response to Page Six was, "Really? Tommy is a relic. Did he give you that statement from a rotary phone?"

Many health care researchers and professionals have tried to draw a correlation between weight and an individual’s health; though others, such as practitioners within the Health at Every Size movement, would argue against looking at weight or body fat as a sole barometer of health. This context is important when considering a new article put forth by researchers working with MAFF Fitness Pty Ltd, a private health and fitness company in Australia, and the Auckland University of Technology.

More: Fat people appreciating their bodies isn't just about acceptance — it's crucial for health

The article, which will be published in the journal Frontiers in Public Health, establishes the concept of “overfat,” which is, in essence, when a person’s level of “excess body fat” impairs their health.

According to one of the study researchers, Dr. Philip Maffetone, the CEO of MAFF Fitness Pty Ltd: “The overfat category includes normal-weight people with increased risk factors for chronic disease, such as high abdominal fat, and those with characteristics of a condition called normal-weight metabolic obesity.”

More: My daughter needed to tell me she's overweight

Though BMI has often, if controversially, been seen as a core metric of overall wellness, it is not, in fact, a direct measurement of body fat. So, according to this study, waist circumference might actually be more suitable measurements of metabolic health than the old standby of stepping on the scale.

The research team’s findings indicate that up to 76 percent of the world’s population — or an estimated 5.5 billion people — could be “overfat.”

More: Health benefits of being overweight?

The team suggests that while many people who would be considered overweight or obese would fall within this category, even folks who could be considered normal might also suffer from what Maffetone calls, “the overfat pandemic.”

Maffetone and co. say that they believe that 9 to 10 percent of the world’s population could be considered “underfat,” leaving only 14 percent of the world with what could be deemed a healthy body fat quotient.

This futuristic hairbrush literally fixes your damaged hair

Raise your hand if you’ve ever gotten excited over a hairbrush. We won’t wait for you to do it, because the answer is never, unless you count the time when you were five and finally found your Barbie’s long-lost plastic brush under the couch (huzzah!). But Kérastase Paris is about to change all that with the Hair Coach, an insanely high-tech hair brush that will blow your mind harder than the trash-eating floor in Disney’s Smart House.

More: The Easiest Way to Fix Flat Hair in Under 60 Seconds

The L’Oréal brand partnered with Nokia-owned Withings to create the first-ever smart brush, which was unveiled at the Consumer Electronics Show in Las Vegas and proceeded to receive the International CES Innovation Award, which basically means that this brush is cooler—or weirder? Jury is still out—than anything you’ve ever owned. Each Hair Coach brush, which has a mix of nylon and boar bristles, is equipped with a tiny microphone that records that sound of your hair as you brush it, allowing it to detect if your hair is dry, frizzy, or damaged, along with multiple sensors that analyze your brushing patterns to see if you’re causing breakage by brushing too aggressively.

Kérastase Smart Brush
Image: Kérastase

All of the data your brush collects is automatically synced via Wi-Fi or Bluetooth to a special Hair Coach app on your phone, which then uses the info (along with taking into account your local humidity, temp, and wind speed) to calculate how healthy your hair—and your hair habits—are. And yes, you’re given a quality-assessment score, too, so you can feel like a terrible person if you fail.

More: 31 So-Pretty Hairstyle Ideas to Copy This Month

Of course, tech this crazy doesn’t come cheap, and the brush is planning to be sold for a whopping $200 later this year online and in-stores through Kérastase. Though we haven’t personally tested the brush yet, reviews from those at the CES show report that the paddle “feels light” in your hand, “despite having two AA batteries in its handle.” But the big question here: Do we really need a $200 brush to tell us that our hair is unruly or tangled? Sure, the damage-alerting aspect is nice (my toothbrush does the same thing, and my dentist is pretty proud of me now), but my mother’s nagging “don’t rip through your hair!” voice from childhood that echoes in my head each time I brush my hair is just as effective, and super free.

Still, if you’re fed up with your snarled hair, or you’re just really into cool gadgets, then definitely keep a look out for the Hair Coach when it launches later this year. Regardless of whether or not this brush changes your life, we’re positive that Kérastase and Withings just opened the door to a whole new generation of smart beauty products, and for that alone, we’re raising our hands in excitement.

Donald Trump just hired his favorite reality star (other than himself)

Omarosa Manigault was one of the most calculating contestants on the first season of The Apprentice, willing to throw any colleague under the bus in order to advance her own career.

More: Getting hitched? Book Omarosa or one of these holy celebs

Her latest career move in the real world proves that little has changed.

Manigault just accepted a position on President-elect Donald Trump's staff, where she'll serve as assistant to the president and director of communications for the Office of Public Liaison. This is after she voiced her support for Trump's opponent, Hillary Clinton, in 2014, rallied for President Barack Obama in 2012 and worked in the White House under Vice President Al Gore during Bill Clinton's administration. Clearly, Manigault's politics aren't deeply held beliefs.

Trump's decision to hire Manigault comes after she joined his campaign as director of African-American outreach.

Manigault and Trump obviously go way back. She was a contestant on the very first season of The Apprentice, as well as Celebrity Apprentice: All Stars. She was fired by Trump on both shows, though she's stayed friendly with him.

Just before the election, despite having previously supported Hillary Clinton, Manigault predicted in a low-key terrifying interview with Frontline that he would win the presidency.

"[His critics] will have to bow down to President Trump," she said at the time. "It’s everyone who’s ever doubted Donald, who ever disagreed, who ever challenged him. It is the ultimate revenge to become the most powerful man in the universe."

Sounds like she'll fit right in at the Trump White House.

We are all this guy posting this tragic photo of American ‘cheese’ slices

This is the day, America. This is the day we all stood up and said, "I'm mad as hell, and I'm not going to take it anymore." No more fakey-ass, zillion-ingredients, what-the-hell-is-this processed food.

One brave soul has taken to Reddit to post this message: "I don't like this many adjectives before my 'cheese food.'"

More: The real reasons Jack in the Box tacos are so insanely popular

American sandwich slices

Sixteen individually-wrapped slices of "American flavored imitation pasteurized process cheese food." What is that, even?

We all know that American "cheese" slices are about as fake as food comes. There is a reason why you're not allowed to label it "cheese" (it has to contain at least 51 percent actual cheese for that label). We know why it melts that way. We know why it tastes like that. We've known this all along.

More: Recipe Revamp: Quinoa "Doritos" and more next-level Super Bowl snack hacks

But something about those seven words is triggering. Why do you need seven words to say "fake cheese"? What is "American flavored" anyway? I mean, that's offensive, right? What is there to pasteurize if it's more interesterified soybean oil than actual milk? WTF is "process" — is that a typo or did they run out of space?

This is a wake-up call, America. We can do better. We are demanding better. And d'you know what? I see this as a metaphor for our president-elect — yes, I went there — but you can take it as a metaphor for anything else in your life that's crappy that you shouldn't have to put up with anymore. What is it? Name it. And at the very least, whatever it is shouldn't require seven adjectives.

What's bad news for Girl Meets World fans may have been even harder on the show's young cast.

More: INTERVIEW: Girl Meets World cast talks Boy Meets World

In a series of tweets, Girl Meets World's writers announced this week that the show has been cancelled after three seasons.

"It is with incredible pride in our work, and complete sadness that things end, that I report to this wonderful audience that our show is over," they wrote. "I just officially got the call, and would like to thank this audience for its incredible love and loyalty. Please watch our January episodes. We leave you with three incredible souvenirs of a show we couldn’t be more proud of. As I look back I can tell you with absolute certainty we gave you our best."

The kids who starred in the show took to social media to share their gut-wrenching reactions to the news, including 15-year-old Rowan Blanchard, who played Cory and Topanga's daughter, Riley.

"Doing a show in general, specifically doing a show as a child into your teenhood, is so indescribably cosmic and scary, but you do it because you love these people, because this has become your routine, because it is the closest you will ever get to being in real school, etc.,” she wrote on Instagram. "I am crying typing this because yes, we were making a show, but our lives turned into a movie."

She continued on to talk about the close bond the cast had formed, concluding her note, "I love you. I love this cast. I love this crew. I love Riley. I love this world we made. I love that it is now your world."

The complete guide to stocking a low-carb, vegetarian kitchen

$

If you are a vegetarian, you know by now the lifestyle can be a bit of a challenge in a world where most people still consume meat. But to go vegetarian and low-carb? That sounds crazy time-consuming and complicated, right?

Yes, it can be a little tricky, however living a meat-free and low-carb life is not out of the question. So what the heck can you eat with so many restrictions?

Vegetarians can be low carb too

Author Margo DeMello certainly thinks so. After losing 45 pounds herself on a low-carb diet, DeMello wrote The Low-carb Vegetarian, a cookbook to help other vegetarians plan low-carb meals.

"Tofu, seitan and a lot of the different fake meat products" make good staples, she suggests. "For the hot dog and hamburger products, though, you do have to look at the ingredients, because some do have a lot of carbs."

And as for vegetables? "Carrots are out, and potatoes are out," says DeMello, "but I include a ton of the different kinds of greens, and cauliflower is a good substitute for potatoes or rice."

More: Low-carb summer drinks

Get your greens

Anthony Leone agrees on the benefits of green leafy vegetables. Leone is the founder and owner of New York City-based low-carb eatery Energy Kitchen. "The best vegetables that are low-carb are the ones that are low on the glycemic index, such as spinach, broccoli, romaine lettuce, cucumbers with the skin on, etc.," he says. "The vegetables you would want to stay away from are carrots, beets ... and potatoes."

Protein sources

Jason DeMoranville, author of The Core of a Balanced Diet, believes strongly in the benefits of soy.

"As a staple food for vegetarians, you can't beat soy as the No. 1 vegetarian source for good digestible protein and low carbs every day," he says.

DeMoranville isn't completely wrong about the benefits of soy, but we also know a growing number of people have been diagnosed with soy allergies over the past decade or so. So what should low-carb vegetarians who are allergic to soy consume for protein? Believe it or not, there are other options.

You can find protein in nuts and seeds (see the options on our shopping list below), nut milks (they aren't chock full of protein, but they do help), and up-and-coming pea protein milks (like Ripple, which packs a pretty good punch). And there's always supplementation — Orgain makes a great plant-based protein powder that only has 3 grams of net carbs.

But what about beans? Vegetarians commonly know beans as a great protein source, but most varieties of beans tend to be high in carbs.

"Beans definitely have a place," says Les Harris, executive chef of the South Glastonbury, Connecticut-based Glastonbury Gourmet LLC. But since people tolerate different levels of carbohydrates in trying to lose weight, "the early stages of a low-carb diet plan may require the abstinence of beans for a limited amount of time."

Chef Jacki Pearson of St. George, Utah-based Green Valley Spa agrees. "Beans also provide a healthy protein alternative in moderate portions of half a cup," she says. "Even though a half cup serving of kidney beans has about 20 grams of carbohydrates, eaten in moderation of no more than one half cup serving of beans a day, the overall carbohydrate count can be kept down." A half cup of kidney beans also contains about 7 grams of fiber.

Fill up on fiber and healthy fats

Fruits are often restricted in the beginning of many low-carb diets but are allowed in later phases. Consult your low-carb plan to see what fruits are allowed.

"Eat foods rich in fiber, protein and healthy fats, such as nonhydrogenated, unprocessed coconut oil, olive oil, soybean oil and butter and no trans fats," suggests Karen Spirer, president of Karen's Fabulous Foods, a national food company that produces the Fabulous Tastes line of low-carb baked goods. "Avoid the hydrogenated vegetable proteins found in margarine and processed salad dressings. Healthy fats cause virtually no blood sugar elevation, and protein causes very little."

Denise Richards' love for Charlie Sheen is apparently unconditional

Last year was not a good year for Denise Richards and Charlie Sheen. In January, he launched a vitriolic tirade on social media, posting things that included this gem: “D Richards a heretic washed up piglet Shame pile Happy Father's Day!!!" And though her response was the perfect retort — “Happy Dad's Day! @charliesheen have a great trip in Mexico! Kids were disappointed u weren't here for it- Hey we'll celebrate when u r back!” — this was just one more nail in the already boarded-up coffin that was their relationship.

Or so it might seem. But in a new Instagram post, Richards painted a picture of domestic tranquility. Showing off a calm scene with herself, Sheen, their daughters — 12-year-old Sam and 11-year-old Lola — and Richards’ adopted 5-year-old daughter Eloise, the actress wrote, “We've had a colorful year ...at the end of the day we're still a family.. @charliesheen #familydinner.”

Sheen also posted to Instagram this week, depicting a casual hangout with his eldest daughter — no insults in sight. But back in 2014, Radar reported that Sheen wrote a horrible group of texts to his younger daughter, Sam. "Mind your tongue young lady,” he allegedly wrote. “if i talked to my parents like this at your age they’d beat my ass. Show some goddamn respect. and you can’t even come and see your grandpa [Martin Sheen] for ten minutes after he’s had open heart surgery and almost died last week?"

He continued, “Also not that you care, but your dad is battling a deadly disease and I’d appreciate a little more respect. Unless you have an apology for me don’t write anything. I’m moving to Mexico. Good luck to you and Sami, oh and your welcome for all the gifts."

More: Charlie Sheen's disgusting death threat to ex, Denise Richards, revealed

Then there was the time when Sheen attacked Richards on Twitter for taking care of his dogs. "We must bombard with warlock Napalm, that traitor and loser whore #DUH-neese POOR-ards. A vile kidnapper and now dog thief. hate. SBW c," Sheen tweeted. Though a friend of Richards’ said at the time, "Denise didn't steal the dogs; he gave them back to her,” that was apparently not how Sheen saw it. "They were in horrendous shape,” the friend added. “He doesn't want the dogs. He wants to fight!"

Looks like all of that is all cleared up now, and everything is in the past. For now.

Serves 6

Ingredients:

  • 3 tablespoons olive oil, divided
  • 1 shallot, diced
  • 1/2 carrot, diced
  • 1 stalk celery, diced
  • 1 clove garlic
  • 1/2 pound chestnuts, roasted and peeled
  • 1/4 cup red wine
  • 1 cup chicken stock
  • 1/4 cup heavy cream, plus more as needed
  • 6 filet mignons
  • Salt and pepper

Directions:

  1. In a saucepan, heat 1 tablespoon of olive oil and sweat the shallots, celery, carrots and garlic until tender. Add the chestnuts and deglaze the pan with red wine.
  2. Add the chicken stock and allow the sauce to simmer, covered, for 15 minutes.
  3. Puree the ingredients in a blender and return to the pan. Stir in the heavy cream and add more as needed to reach the desired sauce consistency. Season with salt and pepper.
  4. Preheat the oven to 350 degrees F. In a large skillet, heat 2 tablespoons of olive oil over medium-high heat. Season both sides of the filets with a generous amount of salt and pepper. When the oil is shimmering, sear both sides of the meat. Once seared, place the pan in the oven and finish cooking the steaks until they reach the desired level of doneness.

Why I'm teaching myself to be less available to everyone

$
0
0

In the spirit of the new year, and really embracing a year of change and cleansing, I have decided to make some resolutions that I intend to stick with. In my journal I scribble the following: Incorporate more whole foods into my diet, eat less meat and dairy. Stay focused on my finances as I inch toward my goal of buying a house by age 30. Be happier every day and thankful for what I have. And, last but certainly not least: be unavailable.

Yes, you read right. Unavailable. Not in an emotional or negative way, just in a way that allows me to focus on what’s happening in the now.

Let me explain.

My generation has unfortunately been submerged in the idea of being “overly-available”.

With the age of new technology came tiny computers with everyone’s contact information at our fingertips. When we need to know something, we Google it. When we want to date, we swipe left and right. When we need a ride to the airport, we easily request a car to pick us up just by the tap of a screen. We don’t even have to dial numbers and talk to people anymore. Everything is easily accessible these days. We have become impatient. Very impatient. Long gone are the days of actually waiting. In this, so are the days of being unavailable to the world around you.

More: I threw away my New Year's resolutions for a dreams and schemes list

Why aren’t you responding to me? A text message glowed on my phone. I woke up to the buzzing beside my pillow. Three texts popped up. I had missed them after falling asleep with a headache from a busy day. I needed rest. I was tired. Why wasn’t I responding? Well because I wasn’t available. I was napping at 5 o’clock in the evening, and that was frustrating for the person trying to get a hold of me. Usually, I am quick to respond.

I stared at the text for a short period of time, and was mildly frustrated. I then realized that at times, I also have the same response when my partner doesn’t get back to me right away. When my family doesn’t pick up my calls or read my text messages and respond immediately. At times, my feelings are even hurt. How dare they have a life outside of responding to me? Why do I even have this stupid cell phone anyway? No one wants to talk to me!

It’s a struggle.

I remember back in my high school English class, when the fad of texting was alive and strong, our teacher told us something I will never forget and resonates with me more now than it ever has. She said, “Put down your phones, stop updating your profiles, learn to be unavailable. Learn to say no. Learn to be present.” It’s taken me a while, but with a year of craziness, I finally get it.

More: 5 small steps that can make a big difference in your finances

In 2016, I started running an online share-space for women called The Naive Melody, I created a young women’s support group (soon to be nonprofit) called Selfie Sessions, and I started writing for various websites along with still trying to be present for my partner and family. It all became overwhelming when I realized that I am making myself available to too many people and too many things. Toward the end of the year, I started learning to delegate tasks which alleviated some stress. But something I also needed to do was turn off my brain to all the unanswered emails, phone calls, texts and requests and let myself be in the moment.

More: I quit my awful job because I hated the person I was becoming

So, in hopes of starting a trend in my generation, I have written out what I believe are the keys to being unavailable. I hope it helps if you decide to make this your resolution as well.

1. Put down your phone. Really, put it down. We see this message reiterated time and time again. Your cell phone is likely your biggest distraction from being present and unavailable. I have many friends who sit on their phones when we are supposed to be enjoying one another’s company. I’m guilty of doing the same thing at times. I have decided that my phone will go in my bedside table as soon as I get home from work each night, and breaking the habit of having my phone right at my side all day will be a must to practice unavailability.

2. Take breaks from social media. Unfortunately for me, social media is a tool I use for work purposes. Marketing, community outreach etc. are all necessary evils that are done by way of the internet. But in the new year, I plan to take breaks from posting about my life, or pictures of my life. I actually vowed that 2017 be a “selfie free” year. Not that I am against selfies, it just feels right to make that part of this resolution.

3. Delegate. I talked about delegating before, and I think it’s incredibly important if you want to take time to be present. I find that I have a running list of things to do that could easily be done by someone else. In fact, I am so lucky to have business and project partners who are willing to pick up the slack when I am feeling overwhelmed. I urge anyone who has the opportunity to delegate responsibility. You don’t want to find yourself exhausted and struck with constant anxiety because you were afraid to ask for help.

4. Make “business hours.” I am partially self employed, and so is my partner. Therefore, it feels as if we are always open for business. Although we both enjoy our work, boundaries are important. Try your best to keep regular “work” hours. It’s simple and frees up time to enjoy your family and friends.

5. Set aside time for you. Honestly, even if it’s just 15 minutes a day. Set aside time to clear your head and remove yourself from the world. Be selfish in that time. Drink some coffee, read a book, close your eyes etc. Be screen-free is these moments. Focus on something other than people on your Facebook or the news. I guarantee you this will do your spirit some good.

Just like that, you are less available, and more aware of the life you are actually living. In the new year, I wish for everyone to be less consumed by their surroundings and more in touch with what’s going on inside. I personally think it’s a step toward being a better human.

Sublative rejuvenation might just be the key to a smoother complexion

Most of us wouldn't mind having perfectly glowing, blemish- and wrinkle-free skin — but we all know getting it is no small feat. So when we hear of a treatment that could help us obtain our perfect skin goals, naturally we want to know more. Such is the case with sublative rejuvenation.

More: The best drugstore retinol that actually works

Though sublative rejuvenation started gaining traction over five years ago, compared to microdermabrasion, lasers and light treatments, sublative treatments are fairly new — and still kind of a mystery. Let's change that, shall we?

So what is it?

In short, sublative rejuvenation is an alternative to harsher treatments like chemical peels and microdermabrasion. Instead of using light or lasers, sublative rejuvenation uses radio frequency technology in an effort to tighten skin, erase fine lines, shrink large pores and heal previous acne scarring. Some have also found it helpful in the battle against stretch marks. Even though sublative treatments don't involve lasers, they claim they can totally resurface the skin, simulating the same effects of various similar laser treatments.

"[Sublative rejuvenation is an] exponentially vast improvement over short-lived results of microcurrent facials at salons and spas," David A. Colbert, M.D., told Vanity Fair.

How it works

According to a 2014 press release from Syneron Medical Ltd., the typical sublative protocol consists of three to five treatments, spaced four to six weeks apart. After going through the treatments, Syneron Medical claims patients can expect tone and texture improvements as a result of increased levels of collagen and elastin and new healthy skin cells.

The treatment works by depositing energy into the skin to initiate a healing response without disrupting the epidermis. The fractional bipolar radio frequency used to break through the skin in sublative rejuvenation supposedly keeps the top skin layer from getting damaged and allows more energy to get underneath the exterior of the skin to really make the most of collagen production.

The huge bonus of sublative rejuvenation is that it's not marketed to any one skin type or tone — from light skin to dark skin and dry to sensitive to oily and everything in between, everyone is a candidate for the treatment.

More: The beauty benefits of honey, your skin's new savior

The pain factor

We did a scan of sublative rejuvenation reviews, and the verdict is in: This treatment is not painless. Most patients, however, find the pain to be bearable.

"The numbing cream they apply lasts about 1 minute after they wipe it off," wrote one sublative reviewer on RealSelf. "At first it felt like tiny little needles jabbing my face, kind of like a tattoo feeling. After the numbing cream wore of I could start to feel the heat from the laser, and omg. It wasn't 'I'm going to die' pain but it hurt. My eyes watered and I winced every time she hit me with [the] laser. After it was done, she applied ice packs, that was the best feeling in the world."

SheKnows contributor Alison Luther went through the treatment at The National Laser Institute in Scottsdale, Arizona, and had a totally positive experience.

"The irritation you experience during the procedure feels similar to a dull tingly feeling, and my skin glowed with a slightly irritated pink for about 48 hours," Luther said. "The good news was that makeup could be applied the next morning, so I scheduled an after-work appointment, gave my skin the night off, and then it was business as usual the very next day."

The damage

We're not talking skin damage, here. We're talking cold, hard cash — and sublative treatments aren't cheap. Prices vary depending on what combination of treatments you choose, but according to Advanced Dermatology in Chicago, you're looking at anywhere between $525 and $1,600 per treatment for eMatrix (which is one of the most popular brands of sublative around). If you do the full round of five treatments, you're gonna rack up a hefty bill pretty fast.

Is it worth the money?

Obviously, everyone has a unique experience when it comes to skin treatments, and sublative is no different. Reviews range from total raves to angry patients who didn't see a difference.

"Been using same doctor for years, He convinced me to try this Sublative procedure for my under-eye issues and slight wrinkles. After 3 procedures since August, I have been very impressed. Skin is tighter, tone is better and I appear more rested!" wrote a 50-year-old patient on RealSelf.

"I had one treatment each month for a period of 5 months. It has been a year since I received my last treatment and there has been zero improvement. I spent a total of $4,900 for these 5 treatments," another patient reported in a review.

However, of 121 reviews on RealSelf, 93 percent gave eMatrix a "worth it" rating, which isn't a bad batting average. All in all, sublative rejuvenation might be worth looking into — if you have the cash to spare. Isn't that how it always goes?

Watch a procedure being performed in the video below to get a better idea of how the procedure might go for you.

The post was not an original tweet, but one that was retweeted from another account and featured a meme with his Y&R character, Victor Newman. It has since been deleted from Braeden’s account, however, the tweet is still available elsewhere on Twitter.

Braeden issued a statement via his publicist to Deadline about the offensive post.

My twitter account was hacked and I deleted the tweet once I saw it,” he said.

He certainly wouldn’t be the first celebrity who fell victim to a hacker. It’s happened countless times over the past few years, from leaked nude photos to Blac Chyna’s recent Instagram issue.

At the same time, it leaves longtime Y&R viewers scratching their heads and wondering if he hastily retweeted the post thinking it was funny. Once he saw the reaction on Twitter, perhaps he had second thoughts and deleted the tweet?

We will never know the full truth since we don’t know what happened on Braeden’s end when it comes to the hacking incident. We are not privy to that information and it might have been more that just his social media account that was hacked. And while he’s certainly had a few run-ins with his co-stars in the past, he’s always been gracious to his fans.

Braeden also had taken a stand against racism just two days before on his account by retweeting a post by Oliver Willis. It would seem out of character and rather insensitive to flippantly drop a racist slur just days later.

Braeden has already moved past the controversy by promoting his upcoming book I’ll Be Damned and interacting heavily with his fans on his social media account. By the looks of things, Y&R fans are sticking by Braeden, who has always shown them true class and grace.
