"Whoops! My bad!" That's what many people will be saying when Venus turns retrograde on March 4. Venus retrogrades work a lot like Mercury retrogrades, but instead of discovering that you purchased faulty merchandise, you'll be dealing with the sinking morning-after realization that you jumped the gun romantically or chose Bachelor No. 1 when the one you really wanted was Bachelor No. 2. Thank heavens we live in a society that appreciates buyer's remorse, which means that you'll be able to find a way to backpedal by the time Venus comes out of retrograde on April 5. That leaves you the rest of the summer to go find the guy you turned down, apologize and then try to convince him that the two of you belong together after all.

ARIES (March 20 - April 18)
Image: SheKnows

You're in for stormy weather when Venus retrogrades in your sign from March 4 to April 5. Much of the blame lies with your loved one, who is being impossible, but good luck trying to tell him that. Thankfully, things mellow out in late May. Be ready for a crazy twist in October or November when he sees the light and finally says all the things you've longed for him to say (which leaves you stunned) or there's a surprise reappearance from the man who got away. If that's the case, then you need to know that this time, said man is here to stay.

TAURUS (April 19 - May 19)
Image: SheKnows

Anything on weak footing unravels and falls apart on Feb. 10. Since this lunar eclipse takes place in your solar house of home, you can expect challenges dealing with a loved one, relative or family member. The rule of thumb for these kinds of passages is to let developments unfold on their own and wait until later to try to make sense of matters. If this signals the end of a relationship, you'll find a new and better one in October. If not? Expect things to get more serious. He's going to want to move in, marry, have a kid or all three.

GEMINI (May 20 - June 19)
Image: SheKnows

Are you getting better at playing with others? That's the question that Saturn, the planet of trials and tribulations, will be asking as it winds up its stay in Sagittarius. Geminis often think they're the most easygoing people in the world, but sometimes they can be unintentionally polarizing — as the past two years have shown. You may wonder how you came to be in such a thankless place, but any pickle you've gotten yourself into is a pickle you can wiggle back out of. It's not too late to extend the olive branch should you feel so inclined on May 18 and Nov. 11.

CANCER (June 20 - July 21)
Image: SheKnows

You keep saying that loved ones come first, but somehow, career demands keep pulling you out of their orbit. Obviously, you have bills to pay, so work commands a prominent place in your life, but it will be interesting to see what happens when Jupiter opposes Uranus on March 2 and Sept. 27. This is when you'll be forced to choose between career and family, and you may be surprised with your decision. Putting yourself first is nothing to be sorry for — especially when you're the one laying the guilt trip on yourself. Remember this simple rule of thumb: People are happy when you're happy.

LEO (July 22 - Aug. 21)
Image: SheKnows

A lunar eclipse in your sign on Feb. 10 tests the strength of your personal and professional relationships. It would be a good time to pay attention to what people say (complaints and all) or risk a rude awakening. There's a difference between listening to people and hearing them, and you want to make sure you're truly present. The solar eclipse in August looks much better because you won't be on the defensive. If anything, you're resplendent, radiant and attractive. Nobody will be able to resist your appeal. Set your sights on the most eligible bachelor in the room because he's yours for the asking.

VIRGO (Aug. 22 - Sept. 21)
Image: SheKnows

You know that there are problems, but what can you say? Nobody comes without his fair share of psychological baggage these days. If you've learned anything since Neptune entered Pisces, it's to accept people for who they are. If you search the forest for one perfectly straight stick, you're going to wind up empty-handed. And since you know you'll always be drawn to works in progress, it's best to find a guy with lots of untapped potential that's there for the mining. He may not look like much on the surface, but the stars show you'll be striking it rich when Jupiter moves into Scorpio in October.

LIBRA (Sept. 22 - Oct. 21)
Image: SheKnows

The reason Libras are famously non-committal is there's a secret belief that you could do better, and if you finalize things too soon with the guy you're dating, you're in danger of missing out. Venus retrograde in Aries (March 4 through April 5) may prove to be an eye-opening experience. This is when you learn that he wants to take some time off or even break up. Ironically, this makes you want to be with him. Sometimes, we don't appreciate the value of something until we're on the verge of losing it. Hopefully, it's not too late. You'll know by the end of May.

SCORPIO (Oct. 22 - Nov. 20)
Image: SheKnows

There will be many false starts and equally misleading endings throughout the year thanks to the Venus retrograde in March and April and the Jupiter/Uranus oppositions, which will finally conclude in September. These will leave you wondering if it isn't perhaps better to take a vow of celibacy and call it quits. Thankfully, skies clear just before your birthday when you finally work things out with that evasive lover or hard-to-please mate. It will be nice to agree upon a suitable design for living. This restores your faith in love, but leaves your skeptical side wondering if this wasn't all much ado about nothing.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21 -Dec. 20)
Image: SheKnows

What happens when the planet of "anywhere but here" (Jupiter) takes up residence in the zodiac sign of "anyone but you" (Libra)? It can bring a serious bout of kid-in-a-candy-store syndrome. This is something you'll be suffering from in April, May and then again in August. After having undergone a serious dry spell, you'll be finding a number of takers in 2017. It's a nice problem to have, but even good fortune brings its own set of complications, as you'll see in September. In any case, it looks like you'll find just the person who's right for you in the fall.

Capricorn (Nov. 21 -Dec. 20)
Image: SheKnows

Eclipses in February and August will impact your money houses — especially that part of your solar chart that pertains to your partner's finances. Chances are, this will bring an increase in income, but be forewarned that it may be contingent on a move or a relocation. Obviously, this will require a number of discussions because there are so many considerations that need to be addressed. You don't like making changes based on the changes in your partner's life (it feels so dependent and passive), but you have to admit, you've gotten good at it. If anyone can work with developments as they unfold, it's you.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 19 - Feb. 17)
Image: SheKnows

Solar eclipses in February and August promise to shake up your love life. If you're single, you won't be for long. You'll find the love of your life (even if you're a confirmed bachelorette) and could be hitched by year's end. If you're already spoken for, you may experience a dramatic role-reversal involving who wears the pants in the relationship. This could be fun. And if you've been experiencing chronic dissatisfaction, 2017 is the year when you decide to break free. Eclipses are astrology's great course correctors, so trust that whatever unfolds is meant to get you back on the right track.

PISCES (Feb. 18 - March 19)
Image: SheKnows

You'll be dealt quite the wild card on Feb. 26. This signals the last solar eclipse in your sign, and it could turn out to be the most powerful one. Because it takes place on the terms of Venus, you could witness one of the most dramatic about-faces you've ever experienced. Don't be surprised if that guy who jilted you shows up on your doorstep, if your ex starts courting you again or if someone from your past wants another shot at romance. Take the summer to see if this is something you want. You'll seal the deal in October when Jupiter enters Scorpio.

Why political action is my New Year's parenting resolution

$
0
0

Before I was a mom, I worked for three years as a grassroots organizer in abortion rights advocacy. I regularly put in 10- to 12-hour days running phone banks, gathering petition signatures and lobbying state legislators. The state where I live, Kansas, is one of the most restrictive states in the country when it comes to abortion access, and working to expand that access was often met with hostility. Despite its challenges, I loved the work, and I continued it throughout my pregnancy — even as I was regularly called a murderer and told I didn’t value life.

Once my son was born, I planned to bring him with me to protests and rallies, but after a rough newborn stage with constant crying, little sleep and a bout of postpartum depression, I’ve spent much of the past year just trying to adjust. The early days of motherhood felt so long, and the task of caring for a newborn were so overwhelming that I slipped into a numbness I’ve never felt before. While I typically would be involved in a political campaign during an election year, instead I rarely left my house, spending day after day on the couch with little energy or interest in doing much else than feeding my baby.

With the right support and treatment, I’m feeling like myself again, and with that comes the familiar tug to address injustice.

More: 5 ways to protest when you can't attend a rally

Showing up for issues I care about is especially urgent now, given the current political landscape. With the election of Donald Trump as our next president, I believe we're at a turning point as a country. We must decide if we will succumb to hate and fear or rise up in spite of it. I feel an even greater responsibility now to help create a world in which my son can thrive and to also serve as an example for him.

This is why resisting president-elect Trump’s agenda is my one parenting resolution for 2017.

The Trump administration poses a real threat to people of color, immigrants, women and those in the LGBTQ community. Trump’s cabinet picks so far also give reason to be concerned about labor conditions and economic security for the majority of American workers. The ability to turn away from the horror of a Trump presidency is one cloaked in privilege, and as a white woman who does not experience racism, I could choose to ignore it. But that’s exactly what got us into this mess. Given that the majority of white women voted for Trump, and that I am raising a white child, I know that my work, personally, stretches far and beyond just voting every two to four years.

My time is more limited now with a little one, but that doesn’t mean I can’t take a stand. Here are some of the ways I plan to take action in 2017.

Engage in conversation

I’ve often been told to quiet down when I try to discuss political issues, especially in mom circles where the topic is deemed too controversial. But I disagree. Political issues are parenting issues. If parents can discuss poop and vomit, sleep training and breastfeeding, then we can certainly find a way to engage in respectful discourse about important social issues.

Everything that matters to our families — from the air we breathe to the food we consume to the quality of our children’s schools — is political. And not only is it important to teach our kids about civic engagement, but it's also important to show them how to talk about these issues, especially with people with whom we may not agree. This year, when I encounter another parent who may think differently than I do, I’m going to practice listening and empathizing and hopefully gain a greater understanding of where someone else is coming from and how we can find common ground.

Additionally, for parents looking to start political conversations with their children, there are lots of great children’s books that can help. A dear friend gifted us with the book A Is For Activist when I was pregnant. Although my son is still quite young, I’ve enjoyed reading it to him and look forward to discussing it more as he gets older.

More: You only think you know what it means to be politically correct

Become more involved in local groups

Getting involved locally is one of the best (and in my experience most fulfilling) ways to take action. Many national groups, such as Showing Up For Racial Justice, have local chapters and allow members to bring children along to meetings. These groups provide education and community, as well as plan local events and actions, and with meetings once a month, I’m able to participate without sacrificing my other needs and obligations.

Make my voice heard

While posting on social media or firing off an email is better than doing nothing, phone calls are still one of the most effective ways to get the attention of members of Congress. Calling a politician’s office can be intimidating, but it helps to remember that they work for us. With many helpful scripts and guidance online, there’s really no excuse for not picking up the phone.

This year when something political upsets me, instead of just taking to Facebook or discussing with like-minded friends, I will first call my representatives’ offices, both in D.C. and locally, and encourage my network to do the same.

Put my money where my mouth is

I may not always have the means to contribute as much as I would like, but I am often able to contribute something. This year, I plan to ask friends and family to donate to an organization I care about in lieu of a birthday gift. As my son gets older, I’d love to make it a family tradition that we choose an organization to give to as a birthday gift.

There are many loving ways I hope to parent and many values I seek to instill in my son, but above all, I want him to have the courage, knowledge and tools to stand up for what is right. His ability to do that starts with me.

Mariah Carey's people say she was framed in New Year's Eve singing disaster

Mariah Carey had a disastrous performance during Dick Clark's New Year's Rockin' Eve on Saturday night, but her manager, Stella Bulochnikov, is claiming it wasn't Carey's fault.

More: Mariah Carey was grateful for Photoshop on Thanksgiving

Us Weekly spoke with Bulochnikov and reports that Bulochnikov is claiming Carey was sabotaged by the network for the sake of ratings.

"I will never know the truth, but I do know that we told them three times that her mic pack was not working and it was a disastrous production," Bulochnikov explained. "I'm certainly not calling the FBI to investigate. It is what it is: New Year's Eve in Times Square. Mariah did them a favor. She was the biggest star there, and they did not have their shit together."

A source also told Us Weekly that Carey's team "did call it sabotage."

Bulochnikov told the mag, "They acknowledged that they knew her inner ears were not working. They did not cut to a commercial. They did not cut to the West Coast feed. They left her out there to get ratings."

Of course, Dick Clark Productions, who was responsible for the show, denied responsibility.

More: Mariah Carey slammed for lip-syncing the greatest Christmas song that ever was

The company said in a statement, "As the premier producer of live television events for nearly 50 years, we pride ourselves on our reputation and long-standing relationships with artists. To suggest that DCP, as producer of music shows including the American Music Awards, Billboard Music Awards, New Year’s Rockin’ Eve and Academy of Country Music Awards, would ever intentionally compromise the success of any artist is defamatory, outrageous and frankly absurd. In very rare instances, there are of course technical errors that can occur with live television; however, an initial investigation has indicated that DCP had no involvement in the challenges associated with Ms. Carey’s New Year’s Eve performance. We want to be clear that we have the utmost respect for Ms. Carey as an artist and acknowledge her tremendous accomplishments in the industry."

Carey's performance took place shortly before the ball drop in Times Square on New Year's Eve. She reportedly couldn't hear the backing track during her performance, removed her earpiece and stopped singing. She was scheduled to sing her hits "Emotion" and "We Belong Together" but, unfortunately and for whatever reason, we got more music and very little singing.

Nick Viall may be the most hated Bachelor yet

$

Nick Viall faced a hate-fueled roast during The Bachelor: Countdown to Nick.

More: Why are they casting women so much younger than Nick Viall on The Bachelor?

After the show recapped Viall's Bachelor Nation journey, from being Andi Dorfman's runner-up to Kaitlyn Bristowe's runner-up to making Jen Saviano his runner-up on Bachelor in Paradise, Viall took the stage — only to be hated on by Bachelor Nation fans.

The show set Viall up in a booth where fans were allowed to line up to tell him how they really felt about him. And they didn't hold back.

One fan said that her friends and family have always hated him.

Then another said, "Basically, I just don’t like you."

Viall replied that he doesn't like himself sometimes either. What?! I felt myself getting teary-eyed for him!

But the hate wasn't complete until another called out Viall for his tight pants.

All in all, it was unnecessarily brutal.

More: Come on, Andi Dorfman, give us all the dirt on the new Bachelor Nick Viall

I'll be the first one to admit, I'm a huge Nick Viall fan, and I can't wait to see him as the Bachelor. So what's with all the continued hate? Hasn't Nick suffered enough heartbreak? He was, after all, left brokenhearted by Bachelorettes Bristowe and Dorfman. I really don't think he needs fan rejection, too.

Plus, what reasons do people have for hating him? I just don't understand it. Are people still upset that he dished on his fantasy suite time with Dorfman? Because I really don't blame him for that one. He was grieving and he wanted an explanation, and she wouldn't talk to him except in front of the cameras. It was the only opportunity he had to get that closure.

Then, he did everything right with Bristowe. She initiated the pre-fantasy suite sex. It was definitely consensual, and she's the one who was dating multiple men. Not that I think either of them did anything wrong. That's exactly the point.

Sure, there are rumors that he dumped Saviano when he found out he was chosen as the Bachelor. If that's the case, then that's not so cool, but so far, that's just rumors.

More: Turns out Nick Viall wasn't actually supposed to be the next Bachelor

All in all, I believe Viall is genuine and is earnestly searching for his wife.

Can we please cut the guy a break already and support him in his journey on The Bachelor?

Those Will & Grace revival rumors may actually be true this time, you guys

$

0

This may the best news ever: We're closer than ever to all but officially confirming that a Will & Grace revival is happening in 2017. This is not a drill, people. This is real. Barely 24 hours into 2017, Megan Mullally (better known as Karen Walker on Will & Grace) posted a somewhat cryptic tweet involving the core Will & Grace cast. Ambiguously captioned, "Self-explan" (short for "self-explanatory"), the photo Mullally included featured the cast smiling and throwing martinis toward the camera. It's a totally joyous picture for what could be some totally joyous news. But do we have a real reason to get our hopes up?

More: We knew it — the Will & Grace "reunion" isn't what it appeared to be

There have been rumors of a Will & Grace revival floating around out there since late 2016. It had been tough to know whether the revival was actually happening, partially because of the popularity of '90s and '00s reboots in 2016 (Fuller House, Gilmore Girls) and partially because the cast kept dropping little hints. Those October and November 2016 hints were actually in reference to an Election Day minisode that briefly revisited Will, Grace, Karen & Jack as they reconvened in Will and Grace's apartment to discuss who they were voting for. Now, Mullally's tweet (and subsequent Instagram post) seems to be stirring up those revival rumors again, and it may finally be time to get your hopes up.

More: Debra Messing: I will forever be Grace Adler

So where does rumor actually meet truth? Following the success of the Election Day episode, there was discussion of a Will & Grace revival at NBC because why not follow that hype? Talks died down over the holidays; now, the fact that Mullally is yet again posting about the show could be some form of excitement-building for the official announcement. While there is no official confirmation from NBC, The Hollywood Reporter wrote about actor Leslie Jordan's recent comments that NBC ordered 10 episodes and that the revival will allegedly go into production sometime in July.

Because there is no official word from NBC, we have no way of knowing yet whether the revival will stream on Netflix, Amazon, Hulu or NBC itself; the possibilities, however, are endless. That's especially true for what the revival would actually cover. If the 10-episode rumor is true, there won't be much time to fully explore the lives of Will, Grace, Karen and Jack in 2017 (although the Election Day episode did cover some major ground). Any guess about the plot is a good one, though, because it means that no matter what, we'll have a Will & Grace revival to revel in.

More: Two shows that changed queer identity on television

I sincerely hope that Mullally's tweet is not just a New Year's throwback, but instead a confirmation of the revival. Sure, it's great to wish people a Happy New Year, but wouldn't the confirmation of a revival just be so much better?

Boxing classes taught me so much more than a right jab

$
0
0

Last January, I became one of those people — one of the many people who join a gym as soon as the remnants of the holidays have been devoured and digested, and almost instantly regretted. Because I work from home and despise the winter, I decided I needed to leave the house. And because I had indulged in a number of regretted but enjoyed proseccos and tiny quiches basically every day for a month, I decided I also wanted Gigi Hadid’s abs.

Boxing was something that had interested me on and off throughout the years because I knew it would be unlike any of my Tracy Anderson or Ballet Beautiful DVDs. It would be demanding and essentially kick my derriere — something I knew I needed on both a fitness and a personal level. So I decided to join a boxing gym.

More: These kickass boxing drills make a "knockout" body totally possible

A year later, and I’m still working out at the same boxing gym. Not only did I stick with my New Year’s fitness intentions (I’m all about setting intentions rather than making resolutions), but I also learned a lot about myself throughout the process.

If you’re considering taking on a new activity or sport in 2017 as part of your New Year’s fitness intentions, here are some words of wisdom I can pass on that I learned from my year of taking boxing classes.

You are stronger (physically, mentally, emotionally) than you think

I’m gonna be real: Boxing is hard work. Learning combinations and throwing punches is challenging — especially when you have as little upper-body strength as I do. I mean, prior to boxing, I found opening a jar of pickles sweat-inducing.

Suffice it to say it didn’t come easily to me, and I hated that. I like things that come easily because I also hate doing things “wrong.” There were so many times when my inner perfectionist wanted to quit, but I knew on a very visceral, life-changing level that I couldn’t bob and weave myself out of this test. I would have to, literally, muscle through it.

More: Women's fitness: Get lean, mean results with boxing

That’s not to say I loved every minute of boxing. I most definitely didn’t. But I soon learned to love the challenge of it, and soon I was finding success in the smallest of victories, whether it was successfully memorizing a combo or doing 15 push-ups without stopping. I discovered that I was a lot stronger — physically, mentally and emotionally — than I had given myself credit for.

Lesson learned: Keep pushing through because the reward of conquering old fears, thinking and patterns is priceless.

You are more than an outdated label for yourself

I can’t remember a time when I didn’t identify myself as an artist. In high school, I lived in my bedroom, writing stories. Throughout my 20s, I was a struggling actor, putting on plays in black box theatres (read: fancy basements). Now, I make my living from freelance writing, while I dabble in screenwriting on the side.

Despite being an avid exerciser for most of my life, I never thought of myself as a “jock.” To me, jocks were greased-up bodybuilders or those show-offs who always placed first at high school track and field while I was rewarded with a participation ribbon. Even bendy yogis who thrived on green juice and macrobiotic diets were more athletic than little ol’ me.

But by pushing and persevering through boxing class — by being able to both keep up and compete with some of the top athletes in class — I realized that I was actually athletic.

Boxing forced me to admit — to give — to myself this vital side of me that I had denied and suppressed due to an old (and, let’s be honest, probably toxic) belief that I was only “artsy” and not ever a “jock.” Embracing this new me has pushed me to finishing my first-ever 10K race, as well as pursuing an entirely different career path as a personal trainer.

Lesson learned: Don’t restrict yourself from evolving and growing into your true potential based on who you thought you were or what you believed about yourself so many years ago. Believe that you can be this and that and so much more — and you will be!

You are a kickass woman, inside and out

Like many women, I have struggled with my fair share of self-esteem issues. Boxing forced me out of my physical comfort zone, which in turn, helped me to love and appreciate my body more. Now I see my thighs and butt as something awesome because of their powerful abilities rather than something to be so critical and judgmental of whilst in a poorly lit changing room.

And as much as it was hard to love and accept my body and myself, it’s been also a challenge sometimes to receive that love and acceptance from others. Thanks to my gym’s close-knit community, boxing has also helped me to explore outside my social comfort zone too. There’s a sense of “we’re all in this together” that helps to connect and celebrate one another — a powerful combo of support, motivation and healthy competition that’s more powerful than any punch.

Eva Amurri Martino speaks about her son's medical emergency

Eva Amurri Martino, daughter of actress Susan Sarandon, is opening up about her son's terrifying emergency and how she's struggling to move past it.

More: Eva Amurri's husband dodged a huge nanny scandal with one clever move

On her website, Martino revealed that a night nurse fell asleep while holding her newborn son, Major, and dropped him, causing him to crack his skull. The accident happened just a few days after Thanksgiving.

"Kyle and I were sleeping at the time and were awoken by the sound of his head hitting the floor, and then hysterical piercing screams," Martino wrote. "He suffered a fractured skull and bleeding on his brain, and was transported by ambulance to Yale Medical Center where I spent two harrowing days with him to receive emergency care and further testing. To say these were the most traumatic and anxious two days of my life is an understatement."

More: Susan Sarandon's new grandchild has a high-ranking name

Now, a couple of months later, Major is "completely fine" and "hitting milestones," but Martino is still struggling to get over the incident herself.

"The guilt I bore in the days and weeks after this accident was more intense and more damaging than anything I would wish upon my worst enemy," she wrote. "It’s nearly impossible for me to trust anyone but myself to take care of Major now."

She continued, "Even though I finally made peace with the fact that this freak accident could not have been avoided by me, it has continued to affect me to my core and in all aspects of my daily life."

The accident has caused Martino to have crippling anxiety about the safety of her other child, 2-year-old daughter Marlowe too. She describes herself as "depleted and anxious," and says she hopes the help of her husband a therapist will be able to get her over what happened.

"With open arms, I welcome 2017 as the year I learn to forgive a little deeper, to let go a little more easily, to accept some things I cannot change and to love myself a lot more unconditionally," she wrote. "To anybody else who is suffering from similar feelings or challenges, no matter the cause — I am with you in this. Let’s get better. It’s time."

So you got an Instant Pot for Christmas: Now what?

$

So. You got an Instant Pot for Christmas/Hanukkah. It happens to a lot of people. Maybe you hinted that you wanted one. Or maybe someone gave you one because that's what everyone was giving this year. It's the kitchen appliance people rave about. It's supposed to change your life.

More: These pressure cooker accessories are going to change your life

And then you open the box and pull it out and you're, like... ????

It's OK. We're here to help.

Read the stupid manual

I know. I hate reading those things too. They're boring. But at least you'll know how to adjust the time and which button to use for what. Oh, you threw yours away? Well good thing it's online.

You can't cook everything in an Instant Pot, no matter what they tell you

First of all, let's talk about what the Instant Pot isn't going to do. It's not going to brown and roast like the oven can. You can cook cheesecake in there, supposedly, but I think you're better off baking cakes and cookies in the oven. Pastry and pressure cookers are not friends. It is not a deep fryer. It will not make good hamburgers. And It's not going to suggest dinner ideas for you. (But maybe it should, Instant Pot makers. Maybe it should.)

Please read this: How pressure cooking is different from slow cooking

Try not to fall into the dump meals trap

I mean, maybe you love the dump meals, in which case go with Goddess, I guess. But there are scores of people who are awfully fond of pouring anything into the Instant Pot, shutting the lid and letting it all cook into indistinguishable mush and then telling you all about how great it was via Facebook post. I want you to know: You don't have to do that. It's not your only option. Do not go gently into that rotini-ground-beef-cream-of-mushroom-cheese-tater-tots-green-bean-goulash night.

More: 9 foods you didn't know you can make in a pressure cooker

Know what the Instant Pot does best

Basically, the pressure cooker setting on the Instant Pot excels at speeding up the cooking time for anything that requires a long time to build flavors or soften textures. So here's what it does best:

  • Bone broth
  • Stock
  • Curries
  • Rice
  • Beans, lentils, chickpeas
  • Pulled pork and jack fruit versions thereof
  • Soups and stews
  • Chili
  • Big ol' squashes

And this is one of my favorite things the pressure cooker does: You can do sequential cooking. So if you need chicken stock to make a soup, you can make that stock first in 20 minutes or so, and then throw in your other ingredients to cook the soup itself.

More: 12 reasons pressure cookers are the new slow cookers

The other stuff

And yes, the beauty of the Instant Pot is you can use it as a slow cooker and a yogurt maker and a number of other things. Although, why make your own yogurt when there's so much of it in the store? Is that blasphemy? Will they take away my Instant Pot if I say that out loud?

Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant, and Scott Disick might not be the father

Tough start to the new year for the Kardashians.

More: Kris Jenner reportedly disagrees with her daughters on Kourtney's love life

What was once the royal family of social media, the Kardashian clan seems to be having a little bit of trouble with the carefully controlled image management they were once famous for. First, Kim disappeared from social media following her robbery. Rob and his on-again, off-again fiancée and baby mama, Blac Chyna, have had a few very public meltdowns. And now, to top it all off, Kourtney Kardashian is pregnant.

That would be good news if it weren't for this kicker: She just found out about the pregnancy, a month after getting back together with Scott Disick, and she reportedly doesn't know if he's the father.

This would be Kardashian's fourth child, and the other three, 7-year-old Mason, 4-year-old Penelope and 2-year-old Reign are all definitely Disick's.

More: Kanye West is the hero in Kourtney Kardashian, Scott Disick split

Sources told In Touch Weekly that even right before she and Disick reconciled, Kardashian was hooking up with former boxer Younes Bendjima. That would be a huge slap in the face to Disick, who's been trying to win Kardashian back for more than a year, and a source confirms: "Scott hit the roof when he heard she was hooking up with Younes."

Kardashian was even seen with Bendjima after she and Disick got back together — last month, after Kardashian and Disick reportedly had a fight, she was seen leaving a Beverly Hills hotel with Bendjima.

"Kourtney has a thing for boy toys, and Younes is just her type," the source dished. "She’s been boasting to pals about his amazing six-pack, telling them she can’t keep her hands off his sexy body."

My home birth turned dangerous when I had a rare complication

$

I had already given birth to eight babies without a single complication by the time we got pregnant with our final baby. Aside from my firstborn being born nearly three weeks early and weighing in at a petite six pounds, we'd never had a complication; not even a cord around the baby's neck. Welcoming our last baby into our home seemed like a simple idea. We would have a home birth (with our older daughters present) and welcome our baby gently into this world, surrounded by love and family.

This fantasy of a beautiful, peaceful home birth lasted through the first hour or so of my labor. Then my world was shattered in an instant.

My baby had been flip flopping between head down and transverse (sideways) in my belly for the last month or so of pregnancy. I had even gotten an ultrasound at 38 weeks to make sure nothing was preventing my baby from settling into a nice, head down position. All was well in utero and my baby's chubby cheeks could clearly be seen in the ultrasound, his lips set in a stubborn pout. We were cleared for a home birth as long as he didn't flip into a breech position.

More: What I wish I'd known before becoming a young mom

Six days past my due date I settled in to watch a movie with my husband after our children were in bed. I shifted uncomfortably and so did my baby. Then he moved into the transverse position he seemed to prefer. We went to bed after the movie and I was asleep for less than an hour when I awoke.

My contractions were strong and powerful but only slightly painful. I knew I was never going to set any records for a fast labor so I let my husband continue sleeping. I used the bathroom and while I sat on the toilet my water broke. Fluid gushed out for what seemed like forever, it just wouldn't stop. My water breaking startled me. With eight previous births, my water had never broken until I was pushing the baby out. Was I about to give birth on my bathroom floor, alone?

I yelled to my husband down the hall, but he was sleeping and didn't hear me. I finally wedged a towel between my legs and waddled down the hall.

"Chuck! Chuck, wake up, my water just broke."

Chuck joined me in the bathroom and he called the midwife. Strong contractions and broken water meant we needed to get our midwife here and fast. He hung up and we looked at each other with silly grins. We were going to have a baby tonight! Chuck walked back down the hall to get dressed and sat on the toilet (since I was leaking amniotic fluid).

More: How I became a medium after I died during childbirth

When I stood up I felt something odd. I glanced down to see a good 3 inches of umbilical cord hanging out. I touched it to convince myself it was real. Instant panic set in. I knew one of the true emergencies of any birth (and especially home birth) is a cord prolapse. When the baby's cord is delivered first there is no safe way for the baby's head to emerge. When the head filled the cervix and birth canal it would compress the cord and cut off the baby's oxygen supply.

I dropped to cold tile floor immediately and reached down to shove the cord back in. At the same time, I yelled to Chuck (who was thankfully now awake) to come fast.

"The cord prolapsed," I said. "I'm holding it in with my hand".

He stared at me for a moment. I was 1:00 a.m. we had been calmly talking just minutes before and now here I was, lying on the floor my body in an awkward position as I tried to lean far enough forward to hold the cord with my hand.

"Call 911," I said.

After the call was made we stared at each other. We knew there was only one safe to deliver a baby after the cord has prolapsed and that was a c-section. The question was, would we get to the hospital on time?

I couldn't lie on the tile floor anymore so I crab-walked backward, one hand shoved in my vagina until I made it to our family room. At nine months pregnant, I couldn't remain in that folded up position much longer.

More: My son and I were rejected from our Mommy & Me class

"You are going to have to hold the cord," I said. "I can't stay like this any longer".

I put my bottom and pelvic area up on the couch and lay with my back and head on the floor. I was trying desperately to get into a position that would keep the baby's head off of my cervix. I pulled out my hand and Chuck took over holding the cord in. He held the cord with one hand and the phone receiver with the other.

The wait for the ambulance seemed to take forever and things didn't improve much once they arrived. They went to the wrong door and when they finally made it down to us we realized the door was locked. Chuck and I made eye contact. He had to open the door but that would mean letting go of the cord. Finally, he let go, ran to the door about eight feet away and ran back, once again shoving his hand up my vagina to make sure the cord remained inside.

The paramedics walked and immediately asked, "Are you holding the head in?"

"No, the cord prolapsed!" said Chuck urgently.

"Okay...so the baby isn't about to be born? Are you holding its head in?"

They went back and forth a few times. It was painfully obvious that the paramedics had no idea what a "cord prolapse" was. The minute they saw that the baby had not yet arrived and Chuck was not holding the head in they visibly relaxed and slowed down.

They began taking my blood pressure and asking me endless questions. Birthday? When did you eat last? How many pregnancies have you had?

"We need to go to the hospital NOW," I said.

I rattled off my age, when I ate last, any random fact I felt might help them move a little faster.

It would have been comical had my baby's life not been hanging in the balance. They didn't bring the gurney in and couldn't figure out why my husband's hand was wedged into my vagina. Finally, an older paramedic came in, started yelling at his men and got things moving fast.

We took an ambulance ride in the night, my husband holding the cord in place the entire time. The paramedics took my blood pressure, hooked me up to oxygen and occasionally asked my husband if he could still feel the pulse in the baby's cord.

We arrived at the hospital and the paramedics opened the doors. It was a balancing act to get the gurney out of the ambulance while Chuck's hand remained firmly in place.

We made our grand debut at the hospital right through the waiting room doors. I had naively assumed that they had some private, back entrance for moments like these. For the moments when women in labor go flying by on a gurney, their husband's hand in their vagina. But no, we have an eyeful to everyone in the waiting room that night.

The OB met us in the hall with a portable ultrasound machine.

"There's a heartbeat! Let's take her into surgery!"

And that was it. I gave verbal consent while the nurses prepped me for a c-section. I was given a general anesthetic within minutes of arriving in the OR.

Where was my husband you ask? He was kneeling on the floor of OR, still holding the cord in. My husband remained on his knees, hand holding the cord in place during the entire c-section. It wasn't exactly textbook. He told me later he could feel the doctor moving around inside of me and said at one point, "Do forget I'm down here!"

My stubborn baby was hard to get even by C-section. He came out butt first, then head and the doctor still had to dig around to find his feet which were stubbornly tucked up under my ribs.

Miraculously, my son came out with great APGAR scores. I awoke and immediately asked about our baby. His breathing was being monitored in the special care nursery. He was alive and well.

And we were done having babies.

Azealia Banks' closet remodel video is straight out of your nightmares

Tons of people start the new year off by doing something like cleaning out a closet or some light remodeling. A fresh start deserves a fresh living space, right? Azealia Banks did both of those, and chose to ring in the new year by remodeling a closet in her home. She even went all HGTV about it and posted a video online so we could follow her progress.

More: Azealia Banks crosses a major line with her rant against Sarah Palin

But wait. We know enough about Azealia Banks not to be surprised by anything she does anymore, and this was still shocking. Apparently, the closet she's remodeling was used for "brujera," a Spanish word for witchcraft, which might mean that she was literally sacrificing animals inside that closet.

And before you think that sounds way too extreme and there's no way someone would actually perform animal sacrifices in their closet, well, just watch the video. It's not paint she's sandblasting off the floor and walls. It's blood and chicken feathers.

Warning: This video is very NSFW.

The video itself is pretty horrifying, but that's only amplified by Banks' completely cavalier attitude about it all, like it's perfectly normal to have to sandblast dried blood and chicken feathers off the floor of a room in your house. She's wearing safety goggles, and at one point, looks at the camera and says, "Real witches do real things." Just completely nonchalant like that.

I'm happy my OB quit in the middle of my pregnancy

$
0
0

At my 20 week appointment, my obstetrician dropped a huge bomb on me: She could no longer deliver babies. I would have to see another doctor for the rest of my pregnancy.

“WTF!” was the first thing that crossed my mind. I am a creature of habit and not too fond of change. Going into pregnancy #2, I felt a bit calmer because I knew what to expect. I knew how labor felt, what delivering a baby was like and how my doctor rolled with delivery room procedures and overall care throughout pregnancy. That was all out the window now, and I was going to have to start from scratch with a new doctor, a stranger.

More: What I wish I'd known before becoming a young mom

My doctor suggested I meet with the other doctors that are in the practice, but she encouraged me to meet with the midwife that’s on staff in their practice. I never would have considered it had she not suggested it. My pregnancy is low-risk and I am healthy overall, so why shouldn’t I consider it? This was the first time I ever questioned how I wanted the medical care of my unborn child and me to be. I did know my first labor hadn't been what I'd wanted. I wish I would have done more research on all of my options. As a first time mom though, I just do what I was told and what you think is the normal thing to do. For me, that meant induction, narcotics, an epidural, and pushing when the doctors told me to. I left with little memory of the birth and several tears internally an externally.

But when my OB ditched me, I decided I am taking charge. I am designing, researching, and making choices for what I want to happen the day I give birth. I have a Plan A, B, and C, and I am 100% happy with each plan. Meeting my midwife for the first time was a breath of fresh air. She answered every question I had thoroughly, honestly, and her answers exceeded my expectations. For example, her Pitocen usage rate is 10%, her C-section rate is 8%, and she will be with me the entire time I am in active labor and a couple hours after I give birth. I left our meeting feeling confident, prepared, and calm about having her attend the birth of my second child.

More: My son and I were rejected from our Mommy & Me class

My midwife recommended a doula as well. I never, ever, ever would have given any thought to using a doula. I am not planning on having an unmedicated birth, so why would I need a doula? I looked into the role of a doula more and discovered that having one just might help me have the birth I am hoping for. She will help me get through the tough parts when I just want to give up, offer words of encouragement and advocate for my wants and needs, document my labor and delivery experience, be there to help me nurse and visit me after I come home from the hospital to check in and help me out.

Researching about doulas led me to even more options that are out there for me. I had postpartum depression that was pretty debilitating about 6 weeks after giving birth to my daughter. Most doulas offer postpartum services to help with childcare so mom can sleep, shower, do errands, feel normal again, etc. They are there for your every need whether it’s just a shoulder to cry on or to babysit. Many doulas offer placenta encapsulation as well. I will do anything in my power to prevent PPD from happening again, and out of every possible thing I could be nervous about for labor, delivery, and postpartum recovery, my #1 fear and concern is about having PPD again. My mind is at ease knowing that I have something else to try (outside of antidepressants) that might work.

More: Raising my second child has been much harder than my first

While not everyone is fortunate enough to have the freedom to make choices about how they will give birth, I feel like I owe it to myself to try something different that’s tailored to my wants and needs, and that will make childbirth a calm, peaceful, and positive experience. I am 6 weeks away from my due date. My hope is that after I have this baby, I can write about how wonderful the whole experience was, and that my experience might inspire and encourage a first-time mom or veteran mom to look into their options. As my doula said, you put a lot of time and effort into planning your wedding, and you should put even more time and effort planning how you will bring a life into the world.

Please share your own experiences! Did you use a midwife, or is your doctor amazing? Did you have a doula? An unmedicated birth?

I need all the words of wisdom, inspiration, and positive vibes I can get!

Just days after being hospitalized for complications related to his type-2 diabetes, Kardashian Snapchatted a hike in the canyons around LA with his fiancée Blac Chyna.

The pictures showed that Kardashian and Chyna, who have been working to overcome a ton of relationship issues in the last few weeks, hit the trail in matching tennis shoes and black sweat pants. Kardashian captioned one shot of their matching looks "hike time" along with an engagement ring emoji.

The pretty scenery and alone time might be just the thing Kardashian and Chyna need right now after an explosive few months of relationship problems. In December, they had a huge blowout after Chyna's Instagram was allegedly hacked and filled with screenshots of her talking to friends and her lawyer about how Kardashian was "fat" and "lazy." Soon after, Rob Snapchatted returning home to an empty house, claiming Chyna had left him and taken everything, including their baby.

Don't discount Arnold Schwarzenegger as the new boss on Celebrity Apprentice

Two years and countless Trump scandals later...and Celebrity Apprentice has finally returned. A lot has changed since Leeza Gibbons won, including a move to California and, of course, Arnold Schwarzenegger taking over as top dog. So far, we're loving the show's fresh new vibe.

More: Miley Cyrus and Arnold Schwarzenegger's run-in was just weird

There are definitely some big changes to Celebrity Apprentice, but the basic structure of the show remains essentially the same: Two groups of celebrities must work on challenging projects. One member of the losing team is eliminated, but instead of hearing Trump's infamous "You're fired," the unfortunate contestant receives a deliciously cheesy line from Schwarzenegger, plus a ride over Los Angeles in (what else?) a chopper.

Schwarzenegger brings a different energy to the show, and we're not just talking about the addition of iconic movie lines.
