We're obsessed!

We have a total crush on Hailee Steinfeld's chic 'do. Find out why in this week's installment of Celeb Hairstyle of the Week!

When you show up to Paris Fashion Week, you've most certainly got to look the part, and Hailee Steinfeld did just that with this chic pinned up 'do and beret last month. From head to toe, this look is school girl chic on a whole new level.

I'm betting you'll be obsessed with the look too, so I turned to Justine Piecuch, stylist at Boston's renowned Jeffrey Lyle Salon, to get a step-by-step how-to. You can thank me later!

Get the look

"This look is one of the easiest to achieve and can be done quickly. This is a great go-to if you need to look done up on the fly," says Piecuch.

  1. Starting in the front and moving around the head, take vertical sections and curl. To give the hair a little bit of grit to work with, gently spray the curls with a dry shampoo or a light hairspray.
  2. To pin hair that's above shoulder length, gather all hair to one side and loosely pin. If pieces fall, just pin back into place. The look should be loose and relaxed.
  3. For long hair, or someone who has lots of it, clip off all hair above the ears. With the remaining hair, gather into a ponytail off to the side. Back comb this section and pin into place to create a cushion. Drop the hair previously clipped off and pin pieces at random into the cushion.
  4. To give a shimmer, finish off with a shine spray!

Friday's Fashion Fails: Miley Cyrus and Julianne Hough

Oops... even celebrities get it wrong sometimes! We're telling you why Miley Cyrus and Julianne Hough's fashions fell short in our weekly feature. Learn from the stars' sartorial slip ups!

Miley Cyrus filming music video with Lil' Kim

Miley Cyrus

She's just being Miley! Ms. Cyrus wore this fashion fail while filming a music video with Lil' Kim, and no, that's not a joke. Miley is totally trying a new edgy look lately, and while we love her cute cropped hairdo, this outfit is a total don't.

The black and white pants remind us of a jail jumpsuit, and the cut of them is giving poor Miley a serious case of camel toe. The fashion police are hauling her in for that felony! Pairing these pants with an equally tight, midriff baring top is also a no no.

Finally, the huge hoop earrings and beanie combo aren't working for us either. We know she can't be tamed, but it just seems like she's trying too hard to be funky these days. We prefer her glammed up instead of grungy.

The final verdict? This isn't our favorite look for Miss Miley, but we do love her black oversized Versace bag and cute loafers.

Julianne Hough at the Hollywood premiere of her new movie Safe Haven

Julianne Hough

Here's Julianne Hough at the Hollywood premiere of her new movie Safe Haven, although she definitely didn't play it safe with her wardrobe that night. Ryan Seacrest's main squeeze chose a super sheer Alberta Ferretti dress for the occasion.

The shimmery fabric on the lower half of the gown is pretty, but the beaded, embroidered and embellished part reminds us of something you'd find while snorkeling on a coral reef. While it looks like something's growing on Julianne in this dress, it's really not growing on us, sartorially-speaking.

The fit also seems wide in the waist and it's also not particularly flattering to Julianne's rocking body. Plus, the sheer paneling on her cleavage is a nip slip waiting to happen. We hope Seacrest brought the double stick tape!

The final verdict? Sorry, Jules, but we're voting this look off of Dressing with the Stars. Make sure your dress is tailored properly next time!

Friday's Fashion Obsessions: Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence

Jessica Chastain and Jennifer Lawrence's beautiful celebrity styles made us do a double take this week! We're telling you why in this week's installment of Friday’s Fashion Obsessions.

Jessica Chastain

Jessica Chastain

Can I just start by saying how amazing it is to watch Jessica Chastain's style progress? Seriously, the girl is quickly becoming a fashion icon. And this week, the multitalented actress looked slinky and sexy in black at The Hollywood Reporter Nominees' Night.

I love a good peplum. It's forgiving, structured, and very visually appealing. What I love even more than a peplum, though, is a twist on the peplum. Yeah, I know, I've said that word enough by now! This sexy LBD works so well because it hits Jessica in all the right spots. It's fitted near the top and the thigh area to highlight her cleavage and toned legs, and it juts out in multiple spots around the waist and lower bust line to create a perfect hourglass shape.

The final verdict? This look rocks from head to toe, and is capped off with leg-elongating nude pumps. I love her soft waves and fresh makeup. Jessica has never looked so good!

Jennifer Lawrence

Jennifer Lawrence

By now you all know about my slight obsession with Jennifer Lawrence! This week, I'm crushing hard on the LWD she wore to the 85th Academy Awards Nominees Luncheon.

I always love a LWD in the winter time — who makes these crazy no white after Labor Day rules anyway? — and it's so fun to watch Jennifer switch up her look these days. The strapless silhouette is one she's been rocking a lot lately — the Golden Globes, anyone? — and it's working for her. I love the ruffles at the bottom and the sweet neckline, too.

The final verdict? What really got me about this look is the whole picture, not just the dress. Jennifer's hair is beachy and beautiful, her accessories are minimal, and her makeup is flawless as usual. Can she do any wrong?

your heart

Whether you suffer from heart disease or simply want to maintain a healthy heart, you might want to give yoga a try. A growing body of research shows yoga can significantly boost heart health. M. Mala Cunningham, Ph.D., Founder and Director of Cardiac Yoga, explains how yoga can help both prevent and reverse cardiac disease.

Benefits of Yoga on Heart Health

"Yoga is designed to bring about increased physical, mental and emotional well-being."

“In general," says M. Mala Cunningham, Ph.D., Founder and Director of Cardiac Yoga, “research has shown a yoga-based model can help prevent as well as reverse heart disease and can impact many health issues. The Cardiac Medical Yoga Model helps assist patients in all areas of health stabilization and/or recovery, which includes the physical, mental and emotional components.”

Cunningham explains that heart disease, diabetes, stroke, high blood pressure and other medical issues can be debilitating, not just physically, but also are very challenging on a mental and emotional level. She says yoga provides tools, strategies and techniques to help patients prevent heart disease as well as rehabilitate from heart disease.

“Yoga is designed to bring about increased physical, mental and emotional well-being,” explains Cunningham. “Hand in hand with leading a heart-healthy lifestyle, it really is possible for a yoga-based model to help prevent or reverse heart disease. It may not completely reverse it, but you will definitely see benefits.”

Yoga poses for heart health

Here are a few cardiac yoga postures to try at home.

1

Chair spinal twist

Chair spinal twist

Sit in a straight-back chair with a flat seat. Sit sideways on the seat with your feet flat on the floor. Use a pillow under your feet or bottom if needed in order to make sure your knees are level with your hips and your feet touch the floor. Place your hands on the chair back as you gently stretch your rib cage upward and gently allow your upper body to twist as far as it is comfortable. Hold this position for 20 to 30 seconds as you breathe in and out deeply. Gently release, then turn your body so you are sitting on the opposite side of the chair and repeat the twist in the opposite direction.

2

Cat stretch

Cat stretch

Place your hands and knees on the floor with your knees directly below your hips and your hands directly below your shoulders. Gently tuck your chin while arching your back toward the ceiling. Breathe deeply and hold for 5 to 10 seconds. Slowly release, then lift your chin toward the ceiling and your tailbone upward, allowing your spine to curve toward the floor. Hold for 5 to 10 seconds while continuing to breathe deeply.

3

Floor spinal twist

Floor spinal twist

Sit on the floor and stretch your legs straight out in front of you. Feel free to place a pillow or towel underneath your bottom for comfort. Place your right ankle over your left ankle. Place your right hand behind your back, a few inches from your spine, with your fingertips pointing away from your body. Gently turn your body and lift your ribcage to the right. Rest your left arm in your lap or on the floor next to your right hip if it is comfortable to do so. Gently twist your torso, shoulders and head to the right while breathing deeply in and out for 20 to 30 seconds or until you have had enough. Gently release, return to center and then repeat this sequence on the opposite side.

Mothers Against Drunk Driving Walk

Did you know that one in three Americans will be involved in an alcohol related auto accident in their lifetime? These numbers are what fuel the Walk Like MADD campaign. The purpose of this charity walk is to prevent drunk drivers from ever even hitting the road. So it’s time to strap on your favorite walking shoes and …well…Walk Like MADD!

Mothers Against
Drunk Driving

Why it was founded

In 1980, 13-year-old Cari Lightner was walking with a friend to a church carnival when she was fatally struck by a car. A few days after the accident, Cari’s mother, Candace Lightner, found out that the driver was not only drunk, but that this accident was his fifth drunk-driving offense in four years. Not only that, but at the time of the crash that killed her daughter, he was out on bail from a previous drunk-driving offense! When Candace was told that the man would likely face little to no jail time for his crime, she decided to form MADD to make sure no other parent suffered the same loss she did and swore to make sure that stricter laws were put in place to keep people like the man that took her daughter’s life off the streets. Lightner eventually joined forces with Cindi Lamb. Cindi’s daughter, Laura, became the nation’s youngest quadriplegic after a car accident caused by a drunk driver. Laura lived seven short, medically difficult years before she succumbed to a seizure that left her brain dead as a result of her extensive injuries. Together, the two formed an organization that continues to bring the number of drunk-driving-related deaths down and keep drunk drivers off the road.

What it is

It may be hard to believe, but every 50 minutes someone’s life is tragically taken from a drunk-driving crash. Mothers Against Drunk Driving, or MADD, is a social activist group formed with the purpose of raising awareness about the dangers and frequency of drunk driving. MADD’s mission is also to pass legislation to increase the severity of the punishment for both first-time and repeat drunk drivers. The organization also provides aid to victims and survivors of accidents caused by individuals under the influence of drugs or alcohol.

How it is making a difference

In their more than 30 years of existence MADD has grown immensely, and their accomplishments have increased as well including the formation of the Presidential Commission on Drunk Driving. In 1982 Ronald Reagan formed the commission and enacted a bill that awarded federal highway funds to states taking action against drunk driving. MADD also supports legislation that requires judges to make ignition interlock devices part of the sentence for both repeat and first-time drunk-driving offenders and the development of vehicles that do not allow drivers to operate the vehicle with a blood-alcohol concentration higher than 0.8 percent.

If you were ever wondering where the drinking age of 21 came from, you can partially thank MADD for that as their campaign was an integral part of the ruling. The organization also provides resources for victims of drunk-driving accidents and helps inform these people about their rights regarding compensation for financial issues stemming from these tragic accidents. Thanks to these initiatives, drunk-driving fatalities in the U.S. have nearly been cut in half since MADD was founded.

Walk Like MADD

Walk Like MADD is a series of annual walks to help raise funds for the organization. The money raised will go toward resources for victims like legal aid, equipment for police officers to better detect drunk drivers, education programs, and many other necessary programs to help stop the epidemic of drunk driving.

Flight soars to No.1 DVD release this week

$

0
Take a look at our favorite DVD releases for the coming week. We've got you covered, from compelling dramas to romantic comedies and flicks fit for the whole family. Take your pick!

No. 1 — Flight

Denzel Washington manages an impressive crash landing of his commercial plane — saving nearly everyone on board — but when alcohol levels turn up in his blood in the investigation that follows, he quickly goes from American Hero to scapegoat. Flight is an incredible investigation of consequence, ego and temptation, and it's an all-around compelling drama that critics adored.

Rotten Tomatoes: 78% Fresh

No. 2 — Celeste and Jesse Forever

Jesse and Celeste married fresh out of high school, replete with the butterflies and seemingly undying love. Fast-forward a few years: The couple has outgrown the euphoria, and Celeste is moving up in the world. In a fleeting effort to truly make a name for herself and her media firm, Celeste divorces her apathetic husband, Jesse, who seems to have lost all his drive. When she takes the time to genuinely reflect on the choice, she begins to see that her life took a harder turn than she'd anticipated without her main man around. This flick's an honest look into love lost, but it still offers trademark Samberg laughs.

Rotten Tomatoes: 69% Fresh

No. 3 — Here Comes the Boom

Scott Voss isn't the same athlete he was back in college. In fact, it's been years since he wrestled, but he's putting all that behind him in a ridiculous effort to salvage his failing high school. He's setting his biology lab coat aside and trying his hand at the world of competitive mixed martial arts. What's the worst that could happen, right?!

This one packs a punch in the funny department.

Rotten Tomatoes: 39% Splat

No. 4 — Alex Cross

Tyler Perry takes on the classic role of Alex Cross, straight out of the pages of the famous James Patterson novels. This flick's a high-energy, action-packed experience that didn't quite get the love it hoped for, but Perry fans may still consider this a worthy watch.

Rotten Tomatoes: 12% Splat

No. 5 — So Undercover

Ironically, the title is not supposed to allude to just how under the radar this film played out. So Undercover follows Molly Morris into an FBI sting surrounding a college sorority. Die-hard Miley fans might give this a shot, but it's not going to be for everyone.

Rotten Tomatoes: 7% Splat

As you kick off the new year with a commitment to good health, consider adding meditation to your self-improvement list. Meditation not only calms your mind and reduces stress, but also reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. Here's everything you need to know to get started.
What is Transcendental Meditation?
Woman meditating

As you kick off the new year with a commitment to good health, consider adding meditation to your self-improvement list.

Learn how to meditate

Meditation not only calms your mind and reduces stress, but reduces the risk of heart attack and stroke. Here's everything you need to know to get started.

Research shows impact of meditation on heart health

"With the benefits of the technique verified by over 600 scientific research studies the TM technique is the most widely researched meditation practice."

A November 2012 study conducted by Robert Schneider, M.D., director of the Institute for Natural Medicine and Prevention and dean of Maharishi College of Perfect Health in Fairfield, Iowa, showed that subjects with heart disease, who practiced transcendental teditation regularly for five years were 48 percent less likely to have a heart attack, stroke or die from all causes, compared with those who attended a health education class in lieu of yoga.

“It appears that transcendental meditation is a technique that turns on the body’s own pharmacy — to repair and maintain itself,” said Schneider. He also adds that transcendental meditation may reduce heart disease risks for both healthy people and those with diagnosed heart conditions.

Transcendental meditation : Getting started

Want to try meditation, but not sure where to start? We asked meditation teacher Jeanne Ball to share her tips on how to begin and what to expect.

woman meditatingSheKnows: What should a person do physically to prepare for transcendental meditation?

Jeanne Ball: A person doesn't need to do anything to prepare for the TM technique, except sit comfortably and close the eyes, because with this particular practice one quickly, naturally transcends the physical environment and dives deep within the mind to enjoy inner silence, peace and expanded wakefulness. It's nice if there's a quiet environment, though not essential. One can effortlessly practice TM in an airport, in the same house with kids running around, or at the office during break.

The deeper reason why no preparation is necessary is because the technique is motivated only by the mind's natural tendency that is always lively within everyone: the tendency to seek greater happiness. During TM, there's no outside preparation or internal effort required, because attention settles inward spontaneously, drawn by the mind's own nature, to fields of greater happiness and dynamism, and there's no obstacle to that natural inward progression.

SK: What should a person think about while they're meditating?

JB: Practicing the TM technique is very easy because the process doesn't require you to think about peace or happiness or anything in particular. Nor does it involve controlling the mind or trying to rid yourself of thoughts. The technique is designed to effortlessly allow the mind to settle inward to quieter levels of thought in the direction of greater energy and happiness within. The mind naturally gravitates to its silent source of restfulness and goes beyond thought all together.

"The only way to take care of the whole tree is to water the root."

SK: How do you help people let go of their thoughts during meditation?

JB: If a person consciously tries to let go of thoughts, to get beyond thoughts or forcefully get rid of them, it's called "straining in meditation" and usually only creates more thoughts and often causes a headache. That's not the TM technique. With TM, we don't control the mind, we satisfy the mind. The technique is designed such that thoughts are not a problem at all and the mind effortlessly settles into the silent, rejuvenating experience of pure awareness or restful alertness, in which all thoughts and mental activity have been transcended.

SK: How long and how often should a beginner practice meditating?

JB: Twenty minutes of the TM technique morning and afternoon is enough to balance a full day of activity and to dissolve stress and revitalize mind and body.

SK: What benefits can someone expect to experience from meditation?

JB: The same benefits that a tree receives when its roots are watered: every branch, leaf, fruit, stem —everything gets enriched. The founder of the TM program, Maharishi, used to say, "The only way to take care of the whole tree is to water the root." This means: deep within everyone is a transcendental source of energy, creativity and intelligence, and if we can restore direct contact with that inner source by diving beyond thought and contacting our deepest inner self, then we will enrich all aspects of life in one stroke. People find their physical and mental health improves, their relationships become more harmonious, they have more energy and become more productive. Peace and happiness grows naturally from within. We find ourselves enjoying life more, and, as perception becomes clearer, finding more joy and beauty all around us.

Quick tip: If you find it difficult to meditate on your own, try Headspace, a meditation app created by former Buddhist monk Andy Puddicombe. Headspace lets you try 10 days of 10-minute meditation exercises for free.

“With the benefits of the technique verified by over 600 scientific research studies,” explains Ball, “the TM technique is the most widely researched meditation practice.” She says some of the specific benefits found by researchers are:

  • Reduction of stress, anxiety and depression
  • Reduction of the aging process
  • Improvement of brain functioning
  • Reduction in symptoms of ADD
  • Reduction of heart attack and stroke
  • Reduction of high blood pressure
  • Decrease in neuroticism
  • Increase in happiness, tolerance and intelligence

For additional information and resources, Ball recommends visiting www.tm-women.org where you can read more about TM and women's heart health.

Victoria Beckham at NYFW: A bold new bag lady look

Victoria Beckham's behind-the-scenes attire at NYFW is, you could say, avant-garde. Proving she's anything but immune to the pressures designers face as the fashion world looks on, the mother of four tweeted the photo funny below.

Victoria Beckham

Though she's infamously known for rarely cracking a smile, Victoria Beckham's sense of humor is far from lacking. Seen here Thursday evening as New York Fashion Week fervor carries on, the mom of four carved out a little time for a sanity check by popping a bag over her head.

"It's that time in the season when we all get a little delirious #NYFW," Victoria Beckham tweeted along with the image.

The designer has been chronicling behind-the-scenes moments for die-hard fashion fans to savor, including runway show preparations and the casting of models — complete with afternoon tea!

Victoria Beckham's permanent pout explained!>>

When asked why her line has been so successful since its 2008 launch, Mrs. David Beckham told Love magazine, "I do what I do because I love women; I'm a real girl's girl. I want to empower women, I want them to feel good about themselves and that's what the feedback is. That people get in one of my dresses and they feel good, they feel confident."

Speaking of her in-demand dresses, the woman once known as Posh Spice added, "You know, they're, I hate the word sexy, but hey... because it just sounds really gross but it makes a woman feel sexy without the dresses being overtly sexual, if that makes sense."

10 Random style questions with Cynthia Rowley >>

Not sexy? She elaborated, "They quite often have quite high necks and they're below the knee — but what makes it sexy is the fit, it's the cut and that zip that goes right down the back of the dress... I wish I knew another word for sexy, because it sounds a bit like, eurgh. And it's not overtly sexual you know, it's not."

Victoria Beckham's latest line of non-sexy stunners is set to debut at NYFW on Sunday!

Christina Applegate leaves Up All Night hanging

NBC's Up All Night has hit another speed bump. The sitcom, which is going through a creative overhaul, has lost one of its biggest stars.

Christina Applegate

It's rare for the star of a major network show to quit, but that's exactly what has happened with NBC's Up All Night. Christina Applegate, who headlined the series along with Will Arnett, has dropped out.

Friday afternoon, the actress released a statement confirming her exit.

"It's been a great experience working on Up All Night, but the show has taken a different creative direction and I decided it was best for me to move on to other endeavors. Working with Lorne Michaels has been a dream come true and I am grateful he brought me into his TV family. I will miss the cast, producers and crew, and wish them the best always."

The creative differences she speaks of are causing a major rift behind the scenes. According to TVLine, Applegate's departure comes weeks after that of series creator Emily Spivey, whose leaving was also chalked up to the show's new direction.

Up All Night'ssophomore slump shake-up>>

Up All Night hasn't been a huge draw for the network, so the show's getting a makeover. It originated as a single-camera sitcom, similar to Modern Family. Now it's crossing over to a more traditional multicam setup . Cue the live studio audience.

Anchorman 2 gets a release date and a possible new co-star>>

We're not sure how it will survive without their female lead. At the moment, Applegate's keeping busy with her film career. She's signed on to reprise her role as Veronica Corningstone in the upcoming sequel Anchorman 2.

Do you think Up All Night should continue?

Emma Watson defends K-Stew: There's no magic powder

Everybody's got something to say about Kristen Stewart cheating on Robert Pattinson, including actress Emma Watson, who has come to the defense of her fellow starlet. Was K-Stew unfairly picked on by the press?

Emma Watson

Emma Watson is speaking out in defense of Kristen Stewart regarding last summer's headline-grabbing scandal. So what if the Twilight star cheated with married director Rupert Sanders, says the Harry Potter sweetie — she's only human.

"Those who criticized her are the same people that think that being rich and famous is like being covered in some kind of magic powder that makes life perfect," Emma Watson recently told Vanity Fair Italia of Kristen Stewart.

"Nothing can go wrong in your wonderful world. For these people, Kristen deserves all the bad things that have been thrown at her because she had an amazing life and she ruined it."

Kristen Stewart talks about dealing with her cheating scandal>>

"I don't know how to explain it, but it sure isn't perfect," the 22-year-old English actress continued of her 22-year-old American counterpart. "I thought that the media picked on her in a very horrible way. Kristen is human, just like everybody else, and she's so young."

"Everyone makes mistakes, everyone," Emma Watson added, noting that Kristen Stewart's romance with Robert Pattinson drew a massive amount of interest from Twilight fans. "It's not fair to consider them matters of public interest."

Robert Pattinson and Kristen Stewart reunite on the red carpet>>

"On one hand, I can understand why it happened: People felt really involved in her relationship with Robert Pattinson," Emma Watson added. "But it's also true that they both have done everything in their power to keep their relationship as far from the public eye as possible."

Do you agree with Emma Watson's defense of Kristen Stewart?

Killer celeb cameos for The Walking Dead

With the second half premiere this Sunday, we can't wait to devour Season 3 of The Walking Dead. To quell our appetite for killer celeb cameos in the meantime, we decided to give the "undead" treatment to five stars with superhero alter egos. Think Wolverine... the walker!
1

Hugh Jackman

There's no denying The Wolverine star Hugh Jackman would make a bada** zombie — he could carve up any opposition with a quick swipe of his adamantium claws, and he would be annoyingly impossible to kill, thanks to his pesky powers of regeneration. Hack off a body part? It'd sprout back like a lizard's tail. Shoot him in the head? His skull would just spit out the bullet. Plus, those gnarly sideburns of his would gather so much discarded blood and brain matter that their smell alone might be enough to repel Rick and the gang.

It's nice to finally see a woman bring a little sex appeal to being undead. Most women get bitten and then just let themselves go. Not ScarJo, aka Iron Man's Black Widow, though. We don't care if her hair is matted with someone's kidney — she'd still rock that skintight, black leather catsuit. This saucy little zombie ninja would be bustin' out roundhouse kicks Bruce Lee style on non-walkers. And really, you just never know when a multilingual zombie might come in handy.

Chris Hemsworth

First things first — who wouldn't like another excuse to stare at Chris Hemsworth on screen, undead or not? When it comes to being the former of the two, though, he's got a few things going for him that would make him a formidable zombie foe. His gigantic Thor hammer could take out a ton of non-walkers in one fell swoop. Not to mention that once you slap that shiny suit of armor on his beautiful, undead body, he's basically impenetrable. And then, last but not least, there's the matter of his other two lethal weapons — those biceps!

4

Alexander Skarsgård

True Blood's Alexander Skarsgård would be the ultimate zombie. If you think a zombie bite is bad, try a zombie-vampire bite! Not only would you be undead, but you'd also be immortal. All the bullets from Rick's 12-gauge couldn't stop Skarsgård... or any of the zombpires he sires. Then again, if you've seen Skarsgård looking 50 shades of grubby in Generation Kill, you know he'll be a lovely piece of eye candy even after some rotting. His only weakness: Italians.

5

Angelina Jolie

If Angelina Jolie as Lara Croft in Tomb Raider can fight off six-armed statues and battle ex-boyfriends without so much as breaking a nail, she could surely secure a spot in the hierarchy of super zombies. If pushing a bioterrorist into a vat of acid is any indication, she certainly isn't squeamish — dealing with the gory carnage of ripping people limb from limb shouldn't be a prob. Plus, she'd be bringing an arsenal of techy tools and toys to the fight. Rick would have to take on her and her giant, programmable robot, SIMON. Ain't nobody got time for that.

These days, it seems like your business doesn't exist if you aren't on the internet .

How to take your business online

If you work from home and have considered taking the plunge into the wide world of the web, we'll help you decide whether you need a website and how to get one that fits into your price range.

When do you need a website?

You almost always need some form of web presence. These days, you’re just not a business if people can’t find you online. Like it or not, the internet is where most people do their research. Word of mouth is great, but it takes ages to convert referrals into customers, and most of them won’t come through. On the internet, you have a ready pool of people to expose your goods or services to, giving you many more opportunities to turn interested parties into real customers.

What kind of website do you need?

It would be great if we could all afford beautiful custom websites, but sometimes that’s not possible or practical. But there are other alternatives.

If you’re a crafter, for example you can set up an Etsy shop pretty easily. If you’re a writer or design professional, consider websites like Behance or Dribble, which allow you to create a profile and upload your portfolio. You could also opt to create a website using an online blogging platform like WordPress or Posterous, which allow you to add extra pages and attach your site to a custom domain.

If you want a real website, QuickBooks and Squarespace offer templates that you can customize for your business for a monthly fee.

The drawback to these types of solutions is the lack of control. You’re stuck with the design templates they have available and those templates could be used by thousands of other businesses. With QuickBooks and Squarespace, you should also consider that the monthly fee may eventually mean you’ve paid more for a template than you would have for a custom site designed by a professional.

Tip: Stay away from templates that you can purchase and then customize . They’re often riddled with bad code and aren’t as flexible as you might be led to believe. And if you hire a designer later to help you fix it, it may cost more than having one designed from scratch.

The eternal question: DIY or hire a pro?

It’s tempting to save yourself some cash by designing your own website. You can learn code, right? How hard can it be? We encourage you to rethink that unless the website you’re designing is for your web design company. The solutions above are more appropriate for those who are determined to build their own.

Web design is actually very complex. It’s more than just knowing where to use div-tags and how to get more cell padding . A designer also has knowledge of current design trends, SEO, usability, web standards and more, all of which can affect how high your website is ranked in Google . They also understand the eternally frustrating concept of getting your site to display nicely no matter what browser someone’s using.

But more importantly, a well-designed site attracts customers. A poorly designed one will turn them off. Think of your site as the clothes you wear to a job interview. Who’s more likely to get a sales job? The guy wearing jeans and a hip tee? Or the put-together gal in a sleek, tailored suit? Just because something doesn’t look bad doesn’t mean it’s appropriate. How your website looks speaks to your customers just as much as the text on the site.

Talking turkey: What’s this going to cost?

The price of a professionally designed site varies based on the quality and experience of the designer, the area you live in, how big you need it to be and even what special features you need. You should get quotes from several designers with portfolios you like .

Ask for the quote to be broken down into cost per item so you can decide what you can compromise on if it’s too much. The reality is, your site could cost $500 and it could cost $5,000. It depends on what you need, but most home-based businesses should be on the lower end. Be prepared to pay an additional fee for a professional writer who understands how to speak to customers and SEO writing.

There’s also the yearly cost of owning the domain and hosting. A domain will cost $10 or less a year and hosting will cost around $100 a year.

Ideas to lower the cost of a custom site

Sometimes, getting your website to a price you can afford is as simple as a little creative thinking. If your quote comes back too high, try one or more of these ideas.

  • Get more quotes — is it possible you chose a designer who’s just outside your price range? Jason Santa Maria is going to cost a pretty penny, trust us.
  • Ask the designer if there are any creative solutions to get the quote down. Often, they just quote on what you requested, but that doesn’t mean they can’t use a pre-fab shopping cart instead of building it from scratch. They know about a multitude of third-party solutions you could use.
  • Contact a local university or design school to inquire about having a web design student work on your site under the supervision of the professor. You’ll pay less because they’re not pros, but you can still be confident that the teacher will make sure your site looks professional. They’ll be glad for the extra cash and the learning experience .
  • Consider a trade. Web designers need or want other goods and services, too. If you’re a writer, you could offer to write her website in trade. Or perhaps he’s an avid cook and would like a custom mortar and pestle made. Just keep in mind it may not be a straight trade if what the designer wants from you is less expensive than what you want from him or her .

Sarah's Slim-Down: Week 2

Little steps
to big changes

Ever wonder if a diet plan's claims are for real? We sure do — so we've decided to put health and diet plans to the test, starting with DailyBurn.com's Inferno program. Is it too good to be true?

Sarah -- Week 2

After one week on DailyBurn's Inferno, and following their tips to lose 10 pounds in a month, I say that Inferno is tough. Really tough. Like OMG-it-burns tough. But it's also rewarding. In fact, after one week, I've lost two pounds!

I am so excited.

This is a tough plan to follow, and I haven't been perfect about it. But making little changes has paid off with good results so far.

Day one: The protein shake fiasco

Tip No. 1 for this plan was to drink a protein shake for breakfast. You might as well have told me to go climb a mountain in stilettos because this felt like an impossible feat. I've never been a protein shake fan and couldn't imagine doing this every day. For a month.

Sarah's stats:

Height: 5'6"

Starting weight: 194 pounds

Current weight: 192 pounds

Total loss: 2 pounds

Still, I trudged along and whipped up a protein shake using my husband’s favorite protein powder. It’s vanilla flavored and I added frozen strawberries — for a little natural flavor. My daughter —the official taste tester — took one sip and proclaimed it good, but I could barely stomach a few sips. The synthetic vanilla taste was just too much for me, so down the drain it went. So I started researching non-powder alternatives and promised myself that the next day I would take a different route.

In the meantime, I grabbed a coconut Simple Square and a coffee and gave myself a pass on this one. The Simple Squares have a really simple and short ingredients list including nuts and honey — and it’s all organic. And it tastes good, too.

Over the next few days, I focused on having protein-rich breakfasts. Shakes? What shakes?

Finding a protein shake for me

Still, I felt like I needed to give the whole protein-shake-for-breakfast thing another whirl. Perhaps there was something else out there that wouldn't be a cloyingly sweet, fake, chalky torture. I turned to the experts to help me find a protein shake for me.

Loryn Galardi, a clinical nutritionist based in Wilton, Connecticut, said that you need to be really cognizant of the ingredients in your protein powder. "If you buy from a discount store, you are getting discounted, low-quality ingredients. There should not be any soy, gluten or artificial colors or sweeteners such as aspartame or sucralose, and if fructose is included, it should be in a small amount," says Galardi.

So what should you be looking for? Start with the right type of protein. Galardi says whey is best, but other kinds can be good too. "The protein should come from either whey, which is best for maintaining muscle, or if you are [whey] intolerant, then pea, rice and/or hemp," says Galardi.

As for mixing it, Galardi says that to make an effective protein shake, you need to add both carbohydrates and a fat, like nuts. "A shake without fat will leave you starving in an hour. Coconut, nuts and seeds are all good ideas. Again, not too much, as we don't want a 700-calorie morning shake. You also need a bit of fiber which can come from seeds as well, such as ground flax seeds," says Galardi.

A protein shake for me

After getting tips from Galardi, I decided to look one more time for a protein powder for me. I knew now to avoid soy, and didn't want whey, since whey shakes have always made my stomach dance. Instead, I went with one of the alternatives she suggested: hemp. I found an organic hemp protein powder at Trader Joe's that has just a few ingredients — and all ones that I can both pronounce and recognize.

In the morning, I mix it with about 1 cup of fruit. Although Galardi had suggested less, I like having more for the flavor and also to get a head start on my five fruits and vegetables a day. The hemp powder already has a good deal of fiber . And tossing in a handful of walnuts takes care of the fat she recommends.

The result? Well, it's not pretty but it is both tasty and filling — and better yet, I like it. Yes, folks, I found a protein shake that I like. Go figure.

The benefit to starting the day this way? I find myself snacking less. There are no midmorning cravings to contend with or feeling that I need just a little more of something. That's pretty awesome.

The workouts

When I said I wasn't perfect about the plan, I wasn't kidding. So here's the big confession: I didn't do all the Inferno workouts this week. I couldn't for two reasons: First, the intensity is so high that for someone like me who hadn't worked out in a while, the zero-to-60 approach comes with pain. I could barely stand up, let alone walk, after the second workout. Then I fell, bruising my foot badly. So a few days off were in order. Now it's a new week, and I am back at it and hoping I can do more workouts than last week.

Star Jones: Heart disease happens to women

Rise up
& fight heart disease

I, like a lot of women, grew up being told that I could be whatever I wanted to be and do whatever I wanted to do if I just put my mind to it. What we don’t often hear until it may be too late is that heart disease can cut our big plans short.

Heart disease happens to women

When I thought of heart disease, I always thought that's an old, white guy disease. I told myself, “That could never happen to me.” But three years ago, it did happen to me. And it happens to countless other women across the country each day. Heart disease affects more than 43 million of our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends in the US. Not only is it the No. 1 killer of women, but it kills one in three women each year.

A healthy lifestyle can inspire

I didn’t know it when I was growing up, but my family history had already placed me at risk for developing heart disease. Coupled with obesity and a past lifestyle that was sedentary and unfit only added to the risk. I made major changes to change my health. Weight loss surgery, a healthier diet and exercise resulted in a 150-pound reduction of my weight. Yet heart disease still found its way to my door. I found out that I had fluid around my heart, a faulty aortic valve and a genetic disorder that required open-heart surgery to save my life. Immediately, I decided to take control of my body, my health and my future. Facing down heart disease gave me purpose and inspired me to help the countless others in this sisterhood who represent the faces of heart disease.

Rise up and join your sisters to fight heart disease

"Heart disease affects more than 43 million of our mothers, daughters, sisters and friends in the US."

For more almost three years now, I’ve served as the National Volunteer for the American Heart Association and have learned more about how I fell into the crosshairs for heart disease. It turns out that cardiovascular disease is the leading cause of death for all women, and while African American and Hispanic women are naturally at a greater risk for developing heart conditions, only about 20 to 30 percent of us actually think that we’re at risk. How can we expect to fight the disease if we don’t even know we are in danger?

This is exactly why the passionate women involved in the Go Red For Women movement have been raising their voices for 10 years to share the truth about heart disease. I’m thankful every day that I’ve been able to rise up with my sisters to fight against heart disease, and now I’m rallying others to join this fight. Let’s shout even louder to spread the word and encourage our sisters to take the Go Red Heart CheckUp to assess their own risk factors.

Commit to lifelong heart health

Making heart-healthy decisions is a life-long commitment, and it takes a lot of work. This February, for American Heart Month, I’m engaging in a month-long personal nutrition and fitness challenge where I will participate in a physical activity for at least 30 minutes a day, whether it be working out with my Equinox trainer, just taking a long walk or joining my favorite SoulCycle spinning class. I've decided to kick my heart health into high gear by "restarting" my nutritional clock with a month-long nutrient filled Daily Benefit program for optimal heart health. I’m also committed to supporting my heart sisters in style by wearing red every day throughout American Heart Month, starting on February 1, which was the 10th annual National Wear Red Day.

This year, you can support the cause by participating in the Go Red For Women America Goes Red Challenge, which is asking women across America to go red bigger than ever this year! So help us fight against this silent enemy and put an end to heart disease. Because our health is non-negotiable, because we have the power to save our lives and because the best force for women is women.

For she who has health... has hope, and she who has hope... has everything!

Hosting the Grammys: Friendly advice to LL Cool J

The 55th Grammy Awards are Sunday, Feb. 10, 2013, and we can't wait for host LL Cool J to take the stage — but we do have some advice for the ladies' man.

LL Cool J

LL Cool J is set to host the 55th Grammy Awards for the second time in a row, and we can't say we're disappointed.

Last year, the rapper and actor was graceful and composed as he moved through the Grammy Awards despite the somber cloud of Whitney Houston's untimely death hovering over the Staples Center in Los Angeles.

Cool water, please: LL Cool J heats up 2012 Grammys>>

This year, while Houston's death still stings, we hope the 2013 Grammys showcase a little more of a party atmosphere with killer live performances, great acceptance speeches and funny jokes made by the host.

So LL Cool J, here's a list of dos and don'ts, courtesy of your fans at SheKnows.

Dos

  • Do look fantastic in a great tuxedo.
  • Do seem at ease with hosting.
  • Do bring a little humor to the show.
  • Do surprise the audience with a performance of your new single "Take It".
  • Do have fun.

The 2013 Grammy nominees: The complete list>>

Don'ts:

It seems like LL Cool J got our Grammys message; he told USA Today he thought the 2012 Grammy Awards were sad but necessary, given the passing of Houston.

"It made the event bittersweet and there was a whole cloud of sorrow on it," he said. "But at the same time, I was glad it went the way it did. We were able to pay respect to Whitney and her family, and at the same time give all those deserving artists an opportunity to shine."

When the 55th Grammy Awards asked LL Cool J back to host again this year, he was excited and leaped at the chance. "[I'm] excited and grateful to be back. They have some great things planned and I hope people find it as exciting as we do."

The 2013 Grammy Awards take place on Sunday, Feb. 10, on CBS.

The best Grammy performances of years past

Watch: SheKnows takes you through the best Grammy performances from 2001 to 2012, complete with video footage of each show.

Eminem and Elton John perform at the 2001 Grammy Awards.

One of the hallmark traditions of the Grammy Awards are the amazing musical performances — usually by critically acclaimed and commercially successful artists of the year. In fact, we mostly watch the Grammys to see which musician is going to lay down the best performance of the show. Take a look at some of the best performances.

2010 Grammy Awards: Beyoncé

Beyoncé just killed it at the Super Bowl, but she also rocked it back in 2010 at the Grammys with her exciting and powerful performance of "If I Were a Boy." Watching this video still gives us chills. Beyoncé is a true entertainer and had us glued to the screen, totally mesmerized by her skills. She even does red-hot cover of Alanis Morissette's "You Oughta Know."

2011 Grammy Awards: Lady Gaga

Lady Gaga performed at the 2011 Grammy Awards and she arrived on stage in giant egg. While Gaga's performance is of course ridiculous, we actually love the powerful choreography and her perfect vocals.

2010 Grammy Awards: Pink

Pink sounded gorgeous live and her beautiful performance of "Glitter in the Air" left the audience cheering. Pink sang as she twirled in the air with an insane dance routine. The performance was visually stunning and we can't believe she was able to sing through it. The singer also showed off her killer body in an almost nude costume.

2012 Grammy Awards: Bruno Mars

Bruno Mars brought lots of energy to his 2012 Grammy Awards performance. A throwback to vintage sounds, Mars' costume and his stage presence lit up the show. One thing we especially enjoyed about his Grammy performance was that he seemed to have a ton of fun throughout the set.

2001 Grammy Awards: Eminem and Elton John

Who can forget this gasp-worthy performance of aggressive rapper Eminem and singer-songwriter Elton John performing together at the 2001 Grammys? Eminem performed his powerful hit "Stan" and Elton John provided the chorus originally sang by Dido. Note: This performance contains lyrics that are NSFW.

The 55th Annual Grammy Awards will be no doubt be show-stopper — with Justin Timberlake, Fun., and Maroon 5 to perform at the Staples Center on Grammys night.

Top colors dominating fashion for fall/winter 2013

The Mercedes-Benz Fashion Week for fall/winter 2013 is in full swing — and we're loving what we're seeing on the runway, especially the colors. Luckily, Pantone has broken down the top colors designers are using in their new collections.

Women's fashion

Pantone Fashion Color Report

It's not surprising that designers are embracing Pantone's Color of the Year for 2013— Emerald — as a staple in their collections. What's so awesome, though, is that designers are also opting for other rich, fall-friendly colors.

"Just as the leaves change in autumn, the consumer will enjoy the ability to change their 'look' and try a new approach to their wardrobe for brisk days ahead," Leatrice Eiseman, executive director of the Pantone Color Institute, told SheKnows. "The fall 2013 palette allows for that versatility and experimentation."

Pantone officials told SheKnows that designers like Tracy Reese , Tommy Hilfiger, Jenny Packham, Herve Leger and Nanette Lepore favor colors like the yellow-toned Linden Green, Mykonos Blue, Acai, Samba and Koi for their jaw-dropping creations.

Our favorites? Let's just say we can't wait to see Turbulence, Vivacious and Carafe grace our fall wardrobes. We'll definitely be pairing the brights like Emerald with shades of purple or Samba red.

Men's fashion

Pantone Color Report 2013 Men's Colors

We're all over the unisex look — and it seems like more and more designers are recognizing that with their fall 2013 collections. Not surprisingly, Pantone reports that a lot of the men's clothing features the same tones as women's — including Acai, Koi and Emerald — along with other rich hues like Beaujolais and Deep Lichen Green.

The key to pulling these colors off? Balance the vibrant hues like with neutral colors like Turbulence and Carafe.
