Project Runway front-runner Laurence Basse has what it takes to win Season 15

$

0

All bets are on Laurence Basse to win Project Runway Season 15, and not just because of her awe-inspiring ability to turn out an edgy leather jacket; she's the season's most consistent designer, not to mention, the most level-headed. She's also one of the most inspiring, although she and Roberi Parra could easily compete for this distinction. Tonight, we got to see her talent, her work ethic and her positive attitude all wrapped up into one heartwarming segment of the show. If we hadn't already been rooting for her before, we certainly would be now!

More: There's more to Project Runway's Cornelius Ortiz than his bad attitude

Tim Gunn visited all of the finalists this week, and he started his journey with the frontrunner. She explained her basic concept for her collection — how she's going from dark to light in hopes of reflecting the trajectory of her life. Then, upon Gunn's request, she gave a more detailed rendition of her story. The short version is as follows: Basse had her daughter when she was just 16, and this caused a lot of drama with her dad. After a very difficult conversation about her pregnancy, she and her dad stopped speaking.

When her dad died, Basse internalized a great deal of guilt. The only thing that got her through all this was her effort to "find beauty in everything." Based on her collection thus far, she's managed to achieve this ambitious goal. The message of her collection is that there's always light at the end of the tunnel. Hence, the collection transitions from dark to light.

More: Roberi Parra is Project Runway's most underrated contestant

The craziest thing about Basse's meeting with Gunn was not even her story (as heartwrenching as that was), but rather, a confession about her collection: it contains no black outfits! Black is Basse's signature color, so to see a collection that bravely departs from this is surprising. It's also a very smart move on Basse's part, because if there's one thing the judges can criticize, it's her penchant for black leather jackets.

The judges weren't quite as impressed as Gunn (who raved over the light to dark concept). They thought that, as with the other contestants, she lacked cohesion. Basse knows how to make the most of constructive criticism, so we're convinced that she'll return with a cohesive and impactful collection.

What does the world look like to dogs? Now we know

$

We've all heard a hundred-thousand times that dogs are colorblind. And, wrapped up in that, that they can't see TVs. But if you've ever watched your dog drool through a Kibbles 'n Bits commercial, you probably wonder just how accurate those assertions are. Really, what does the world look like to dogs? Do they only see the world in black and white, or is there more to the story?

In a word, yes — there is more to the story.

The truth is that most of what we learned about dog's vision growing up is based on misconceptions. You might want to sit down for this shocker: Dogs are not, in fact, colorblind.

More: Should dogs really be eating raw food? We asked experts for answers

Crazy, right? The next thing you know, someone will debunk the theory that eating carrots makes you see better. Wait, what do you mean that isn't true either? My life is a lie. The silver lining, though, is the happy news that dogs don't actually have to go through life in black and white.

"The Pet Lady" Dana Humphrey — a professor and program facilitator in the pet product marketing and design department at the Fashion Institute of Technology — summed it up in an easy-to-understand way, telling SheKnows, "New research shows that dogs' color range of sight is limited to blue and yellow. So if you throw a red Frisbee on green grass, it all looks gray to them."

Humphrey's assertion is echoed by Jay Neitz, a color vision scientist at the University of Washington who has performed numerous studies on color perception in dogs.

In an interview with Live Science, Neitz confirmed that dogs' eyes (like most mammals) contain only two of the color-detecting cells called cones. The cones in dogs' eyes enable their brains to distinguish blue from yellow, but not red from green.

More: 6 gross reasons you should stop letting your dog kiss you

This means that a dog's vision is much like that of someone who suffers from red-green colorblindness. Because the neurons inside their eye's retina are not affected by red light or green light, dogs' brains don't perceive these two colors. Rather, they simply see shades of gray.

If you dive further into Neitz's findings, it is revealed that dogs see the entire rainbow differently than humans do. While we see it ROYGBIV — or red, orange, yellow, green, blue-green, indigo and violet — dogs see it as very dark gray, dark yellow (kind of brownish), light yellow, gray, light blue, and dark blue.

Plus, dogs' visual acuity is not as good as humans — Psychology Today compares it to the human equivalent of 20/75, as dogs are very farsighted. This means that in addition to basically being red-green colorblind, everything looks a bit blurry to dogs too.

What does this mean for your doggie friend? Well, he doesn't need glasses, if that's what you're thinking. Because dogs don't know any differently, having blurry, less colorful vision doesn't bother them. Their water bowl is half full, so to speak.

More: Our favorite superfood spice should be added to your dog's diet

What does this mean for you? Nothing, really, because you obviously love your pet even if he does think tomatoes are dark gray. One thing you can do to potentially give your pet a paw up is to purchase pet toys in bright yellows and blues.

Although some scientists believe that dogs seldom choose to use the narrow range of color discrimination they do have — instead just going by the brightness or darkness of an object — some studies have shown that dogs consciously choose items in colors they can see.

And if you're ever curious about what that looks like (what a dog sees), you're in luck. There exists a Dog Vision app on the internet that allows you to plug in any picture and get a simulated version of how your dog might see whatever view is presented in the picture.

So we know how the real world looks to dogs, but what about those screens that we're always glued to? Can they see what's on the TV? Well, according to Ernst-Otto Ropstad, an associate professor at the Norwegian School of Veterinary Science, "They probably see TVs just as well as they see the world in general.”

While dogs may have had some trouble viewing old televisions, Ropstad explains, “Now that modern TVs generate more frames per second, dogs can perceive the pictures as film, just like we do.”

So, no you're not crazy when it seems like your dog is watching TV with you. They can't process the content that we can, but they are definitely seeing the same images, just with a little more yellow and blue.

Everything you need to know about hack of one billion Yahoo accounts

$

There's not much festive cheer at Yahoo HQ right now. The internet search giant is under increasing pressure after revealing it was the victim of a huge hack attack in 2013. Here's what you need to know.

More: 15 awesome gifts for the selfie addict on your shopping list

Why has it taken so long for the hack to be disclosed?

The 2013 hack was uncovered as part of continuing investigations by authorities and security experts into a later hack in 2014. It's not clear when Yahoo knew of the first hack. Yahoo employees reportedly knew of the 2014 hack later that year, but the company did not announce the breach until September 2016.

Who was responsible for the hack?

Yahoo said it "believes an unauthorized third party, in August 2013, stole data associated with more than one billion user accounts," and that some of the breach could be linked to state-sponsored activity. They said the same about the 2014 hack, but haven't given the name of any countries they think may be responsible, and think the 2013 hack is "likely distinct" from the 2014 hack.

More: My dream job ended in a sexual harassment nightmare

What does it mean for Yahoo?

So far, it's not great. The company's shares closed down more than 6 percent on Wall Street amid fears that a planned sale to telecommunications giant Verizon is now in doubt. Verizon agreed to buy Yahoo's core internet business in July for $4.8 billion and are now trying to persuade Yahoo to change the terms of the agreement to take into account the economic fallout from the 2013 and 2014 hacks. If users abandon Yahoo following the hack disclosure, it clearly won't be as valuable to Verizon.

What does it mean for Yahoo users?

Yahoo said the 2013 hack may have affected over one billion user accounts, making it the largest data security hack in history. (The 2014 attack, which affected around 500 million accounts and was disclosed in September of this year, suddenly seems tiny in comparison.) Bloomberg reported Wednesday that the victims of the billion-user hack include FBI, CIA, NSA and White House workers. According to the California-based company, names, phone numbers, passwords and email addresses were stolen, but not bank and payment data. In a Tumblr post Tuesday, Yahoo's chief information security officer Bob Lord said the company has "taken steps to secure [the breached] user accounts" and is "working closely with law enforcement." Lord advised Yahoo users to visit the Safety Center page for important tips on how to stay safe online.

What happens next?

At the daily White House press briefing Thursday, spokesman Josh Earnest said the FBI is investigating the matter. Verizon said that it would evaluate the situation as Yahoo investigates and would review the "new development before reaching any final conclusions."

Ever since the news of Kanye West's hospitalization for exhaustion and sleep deprivation broke, rumors about his marriage to Kim Kardashian West being in a dire state have been flowing thick and fast.

More: Kim Kardashian West & Kanye West's relationship is definitely #goals

And they haven't stopped: Over the last three weeks there have been multiple reports suggesting that the couple are not on the best terms. However, the latest report from E! News is painting a much more promising picture about the couple's relationship.

According to an E! News source, Kardashian West and West spent the evening of Wednesday, Dec. 14, at their Los Angeles home, and there's absolutely no cause for concern because "They were very sweet together and were very much together."

More: Kim Kardashian West won't ditch Kanye West in his time of need

And despite the tough few months that the couple have had, they're not going to ditch each other in their time of need, instead, they're getting through the turmoil together. The source said, "They are going through a lot but from what it seems like they are doing it together and getting through it. It's been a very rough year for her."

A second source echoed these statements, telling the publication last week that West and Kardashian West are still going strong, adding, "Just because the paparazzi don't see him, they're like, 'Oh, Kanye's not with Kim anymore.' That's bullshit."

Kim and Kanye have not publicly commented on their relationship, nor shared photos of themselves together on social media, but why should they? They have nothing to prove to anyone.

Survivor's Hannah Shapiro sensed she would lose the game

She was dubbed a "flipper" on Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X for the way she played the game. But does Hannah feel the label is fair? We asked her that question on the finale's red carpet — and her answer was flawless. She also revealed behind-the-scenes details on her panic attack she suffered while sitting out of a challenge and explained how she landed a spot on the show.

SheKnows: You were clearly a huge fan of Survivor. It was almost like you were in awe of being in the presence of Jeff Probst. You created #TrustCluster, so what's your hashtag to sum up your season.

Hannah Shapiro: When #TrustCluster was trending worldwide, I screen grabbed it because it was the coolest moment of my life. I guess it would be #IsntJeffProbstBeautifulAndTheCastIsSoLovely.

SK: You were making a strong, eloquent argument at that final Tribal Council that it seemed as if you may have convinced some jury members to vote your way to win the game. How confident were you?

HS: I was gonna play so that I could have a very strong argument at the end. I wasn't going to do anything except be bold and believe in that argument. I felt like I presented a very clear argument at final Tribal Council, and I felt like I had been playing a strong game. You don't always see it throughout the season. I realized that the person I was sitting next to, Adam, understood my game the best. Perception is such a real thing out here whether or not it's the reality. I sort of sensed I had probably not won Survivor [laughs.] We're all close to each other. I was pretty sure this one wasn't mine. I was not ashamed of the game I played. I played really hard. I gave it everything I had. I made moves. I made risky moves. I was proud of the game that I had played. I think Adam also played a wonderful game, and I congratulate him.

SK: When you hear somebody like Bret call you a flipper, do you feel that label is deserved?

HS: I really think, again, perception is everything. We had a post-merge of mostly men and I think when women make moves in the game — especially in a post-merge of mostly men — when a woman makes a move, she's a flipper. When a guy makes a move, he's a game player. When a woman is loyal, she's a goat. When a guy is loyal, he's loyal. I think flipper is perception. I think Bret didn't understand my game. I think Bret was also hurt. I think he didn't like being outplayed by someone he considered weaker than him. That flipper thing also came into play because, weirdly enough, the Zeke vote. Zeke needed to convince four people, who he had voted out their allies, to reach into a bag of rocks. Bret is a very emotional player who doesn't necessarily always understand the strategic element. In order to convince Bret to stick his hand in a bag of rocks for him, Zeke helped paint me as a flipper and that perception really remained throughout the game. I don't think Bret understood my game, and I also think flipping is a matter of perception. Adam also flipped on a lot of people. Am I a flipper? I really think it's perception.

SK: Let's take you out of the final three and put David in your place. Would you vote for David, Ken or Adam?

HS: I think Dave wins in that situation hands down. I always knew Dave would win. The jury really wanted to give Dave $1 million. He is someone who I related to on every level. I also think he played a fantastic game, but I now more clearly see what Adam's game was.

Hannah Shapiro and Adam Klein talk at camp on Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X

SK: One of the components that connect you and Dave is anxiety. There was a moment when you had a panic attack while sitting out of a challenge. What happened? Is there something we didn't see?

HS: Something you didn't see is that on Ikabula, we were not eating or sleeping. The other beaches had food. We would wait for the moon to change places in the sky so the bugs would go down and be less bad. The camera guys had netting over their face only on our beach. I get to the challenge and I'm already physically done. The thing about a panic attack is that it feels like a heart attack. It's a very physicalized thing. As soon as I was feeling weak and dehydrated, it transferred into anxiety. It became a very quick, rapid physical thing. I mentally understood what was happening, but I had shooting pain in my legs. Panic attacks are a very physical thing.

SK: Please don't take this the wrong way, but you and David always looked filthy.

HS: [Laughs.] My mom was so mad. She was like, "Hannah, you have to wash your face." Dave was like, "Hannah, you're dirty." Watching it back, I'm getting all these tweets like, "Wash your face." You have to understand, I didn't have a mirror [laughs.] I was incredibly dirty. I was incredibly skinny. I was on Survivor. I'm sorry. I shower at home, I swear [laughs.] But I was not the smelliest one out there. I will not say who it was, but I did wash myself. I was fine. Although Jeff Probst once said when I was walking out of Tribal Council that I had a layer of dirt on me. I was like, "Oh, Jesus Christ."

SK: You've got to tell us who was the smelliest.

HS: Absolutely not. Oh, no no no. Gotta leave some things a mystery.

SK: How did you get on the show?

HS: So I have loved Survivor since I was like 14. I wrote my college common app essay about wanting to play Survivor. Then I took a Survivor class at Northwestern taught by Max Dawson who was on the show. He encouraged me to apply, and the opportunity came up. I just couldn't say no.

SK: How many times did you apply before getting picked?

HS: This was the second time.

SK: Would you go back and play it again?

HS: I feel like I would go back as a much more confident, bold person. I think there's so many things I want to pursue, but I'm a fan of the game so who knows if I would ever go to the island again.

Survivor's David Wright says he was relieved to get voted off

David Wright was a Survivor force unlike anything we've ever seen before. He went from fearing literally everything, to growing into the game's biggest threat. He finished in fourth place, just one vote shy of making it to the final Tribal Council where he very likely would have won the $1 million prize. During our one-on-one red carpet interview with David at the finale, he expressed why getting eliminated — even that deep in the competition — was such a relief. Plus, he dished the dirt on how playing Survivor has helped him battle anxiety and revealed why he truly believed Ken would never vote him out.

SheKnows: Had you made it to the final Tribal Council, it is clear you would have won the game based on comments from the jury. How does it feel knowing you were so close?

David Wright: It feels amazing, really. I never thought I would have made it as far as I did. I thought for sure I would be a first, second or third boot. To actually make it as far as I did, even though I didn't make it to final Tribal, it's a huge sense of accomplishment for me. I just didn't believe in myself because I never thought I could make it that far. I underwent all this personal growth. No one is gonna believe this, but when I got voted off there was weirdly a sense of relief. I tried to get into final Tribal, but when I didn't I just felt like with all the personal growth I had undergone throwing $1 million on top of that would've done damage to me. It really was a relief to actually get voted out.

SK: You had many memorable moments throughout the game. One that stuck out during the finale was the fake Idol you crafted, which Jay found.

DW: I knew that he had found it because I saw him spot it. When I went back later the coconut had been split open. He knew that his name was being tossed around on the chopping block for many Tribals. I knew he was going to use it. Going into that Tribal I felt pretty confident we would see him play the fake Idol. It's just a fun Survivor moment when Jeff holds it up, says it's fake and throws it in the fire.

SK: Throughout the game, you openly discussed your anxieties and fear of death. Tell us a little about that.

DW: I was afraid of so much out there. There were fruit bats the size of dogs. The cyclone was scary. I thought I was gonna die when they were evacuating us because the winds were whipping and the waves were crashing. There wasn't really much that I wasn't afraid of out there. The bathroom situation I was afraid. It was just awful, but I love the game so much I was willing to put up with all those things to play my favorite thing in the world.

More: Hannah Shapiro fears death during Survivor panic attack

SK: Have you overcome those fears because of Survivor?

DW: Absolutely. More specifically, my fear of death I said on the show became a fear of life. Coming out of this game, now I'm putting more energy into living my life and I'm reaching out for those things that I want that I have just been kind of afraid to reach for. It's life-changing. I'm a work in progress, but I feel I'm a better person walking out of the game than I was walking in.

SK: The final vote was a blowout victory for Adam. Did you know you were going to vote for Adam to win before even going to that final Tribal Council?

DW: I definitely had to debate because I didn't think Ken or Hannah played terrible games. I thought they played good games, but I just felt Adam played a great, better game. His game kind of reminded me of my own. He found two Idols. He's very likable. I just felt like when I was writing his name down that, in a way, I was kind of writing my name down.

David Wright on Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X
Image: CBS

SK: There was a moment at Tribal Council where Adam was using his hand to show how highly strong your game was. Then, you lifted his hand even higher to illustrate how you believed your game was much stronger than even he was implying. Thoughts on that moment looking back?

DW: I hated myself the second I did it. I was doing it for a strategic reason, but I think it came off a little cocky, which really isn't me. I thought if I really can lean on Ken's trust and he would save me to force a tie. I thought, if I end up at final Tribal, why not let this guy [Adam] make my case for me? I was having a little fun, too [laughs.] I do wish I wouldn't have done that, though.

SK: Your bond with Ken was very strong throughout the game. On the night you were voted off, you boasted about feeling safe in the game. Were you truly that confident Ken wasn't going to flip on you, or did you know it was coming?

DW: I'm sure this sounds incredibly naive, but I really did believe I had Ken's loyalty and trust walking into Tribal. I will say that a minute into the Tribal conversation I realized it wasn't going my way at all. I tried to appeal hard in that moment to Ken's trust and loyalty hoping that I could maybe guilt him a little bit. Ultimately, he made the move he had to make for his game. I don't resent him for it at all. We're still best buds. He stayed over with me a couple weeks ago. He made the right move for him. I love him. He's a great guy.

SK: How does somebody like you end up on a show where you're forced to face your fears?

DW: I was fearful going into this game. I was very anxious about the elements I was going to have to face. I just love the game so much that I was willing to put up with all that stuff and go through the struggle. I'm so grateful for the experience whether I won the million or not because I came out a better person.

SK: How did you get on the show?

DW: This was my third time applying. I sent in a video, and a week later I got a phone call from Survivor casting. Then you get into this really long process. I did it the normal way by putting my video on their site. It worked out and I'm so happy.

David Wright on Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X

SK: Would you do it again?

SK: You're a TV writer, so what's next for you? Any projects you're working on that we might know?

Bret LaBelle says Adam Klein didn't win Survivor based on sympathy votes

Jeff Probst said Bret LaBelle's coming out conversation with Zeke Smith was his favorite moment of Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X. When we talked with Bret one-on-one at the finale, the Boston police sergeant who finished in fifth place, said it was flattering to be considered such an important part of this season and explained why he opted to only tell Zeke his secret. He also discussed what his strategy was to win the game and revealed why Adam deserved to be crowned sole Survivor.

SheKnows: Tell us about how your game evolved because we didn't get to see much of your personality early in the competition.

Bret LaBelle: I come from a world where we don't talk to cameras. I think it maybe took me a little bit to try and get comfortable in my own skin, but my strategy never changed. I believe that in order to win this game you have to have a really good social strategy. That's what I'm good at. I'm very good at talking to people. People just seem to really enjoy me. I knew that was my strong point. I knew that's what would get me far in the game. That's what I did.

SK: Who did you want to go to the end of the game with?

BL: I wanted to go with Ken and Hannah. I find it fascinating she kept saying I wasn't going to take her to the end. Why wouldn't I take her to the end? It would have won me $1 million.

SK: As soon as you saw who made it to the final three, how quickly did you decide to give your vote to Adam?

BL: Adam and I, after the merge, had a little side alliance. He was keeping an ear to the grindstone for my name, and I was keeping an ear to the grindstone for his name because we were kind of on different sides of the court. After a couple of votes, my name didn't come up. His stock went up, and I'm sure my stock went up for him. We just kept that little secret thing going. He's a great kid. I didn't know his story [about his mom's cancer diagnosis], but I had a lot of trust in him throughout the second half of the game. Hearing his story, I just can't even imagine how anyone could be out there with the stress we were under. It tore at my heart strings, and I don't know how he did it. I can't believe he did. He deserves the $1 million.

SK: You were very vocal about Hannah being a flipper. Tell us about your relationship with her.

BL: Hannah is a great person. It's stressful out there, but Hannah was playing a different game than I was. She was jumping back and forth. You'd see her talking. She would come up and want to talk strategy with you, then you look over and see her talking strategy with somebody else. She didn't have a poker face because she looked like a deer in headlights. We all knew what was happening. Not because they weren't good players or good people, but you could see the jury wasn't too happy with certain people. They might have been playing hard or playing their game, but you knew who the people on the jury was gonna vote for. Even though she was dangerous, she was somebody you wanted to take to the end if you wanted to win.

BL: I did not know about Adam's story, but I think David would beat everybody if he got to the end.

SK: So did Adam's story influence your vote?

BL: No. With the three that were there, he had my vote. I still say David probably wins it, but I think Adam would've given him a good run for his money.

SK: Jeff Probst said you were part of his favorite moment this season when you came out of the closet to Zeke. What's that feel like to hear Jeff say that?

BL: It's absolutely flattering because I've been a fan of this game since the beginning. To hear Jeff Probst, a guy who I've been watching since I was 24, such a great guy and wonderful person, come out to say that was his favorite moments is absolutely flattering. It's amazing. I'm shocked and glad I could be a part of it. To be part of such a great moment of a show I've loved for so long is just really cool.

Bret LaBelle on Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X

SK: Going into the game, did you plan on revealing your secret to anybody?

BL: I've been slowly coming out over the years to close family and friends. Did I ever go on a pedestal on a beach in front of 10 million people and say I was gay? Well, it was a beautiful beach, so why not? I knew it was time in my life. It came up because Zeke and I were just jiving. I knew we had a lot in common. I'm not sure he knew it, but I knew it. I knew it was the right thing to do. We were bonding for many different reasons. I just wanted to say, "Bud, I've been through the same thing you went through." I think it was very moving and really cool. It was very real. It was just a real moment with just two guys having beers talking about life.

I heard people my age saying, "Oh my God. I still haven't told my family. You're me. I'm so happy for you." It's been really moving and cool. It's really neat. BL: I went to an open audition. I had gone to like four or five open auditions. I sent in one tape, but I knew the tape wasn't the way to go. I knew they had to see me in person. We talked about it a lot because there's not a lot to talk about on the island. Some said they sent in a tape, but I told them all I went to an open audition and every head snapped like, "What?!?! Those work?!?!" I was like, "Hey, it worked for me."

People who are triggered by the holidays don’t owe it to anyone to be jolly

$

For a lot of people, the holidays are not the most wonderful time of the year. In fact, they can be pretty rough.

It's hard enough dealing with trauma, let alone a whole triggering season going on for a solid two months every year that has its own very distinct set of decorations, foods and music. That’s how the holidays work for some people.

More: How to get a handle on holiday depression

Ho-ho-no

Not enthusiastically participating in the holidays is so socially stigmatized that there are established names (Scrooge, Grinch) and a catchphrase (Bah, humbug!) reserved for those who don’t exhibit sufficient levels of cheer.

Then there’s the fact that occasions calling for mandatory fun are basically just a setup for disappointment. This includes birthdays, anniversaries and the great-granddaddy of all overrated holidays, New Year’s Eve. These required celebrations put pressure on you to act and feel a certain way (hint: happy) and if, for whatever normal human reason you don’t, you feel like you failed at something you’re told you should enjoy, in turn making you feel even worse.

It's beginning to look a lot like PTSD

So what can you, someone who counts down the days until you can decorate the tree, do for loved ones who are triggered by the holidays? Actually, a lot! For starters, don’t force people to be festive against their will. No one owes it to you to be jolly. If you want to see a Christmas show, put on the Hallmark channel.

Someone deciding not to celebrate a holiday shouldn’t impact your enjoyment or ability to celebrate it, and if it does, making the holiday defector feel guilty about it is not going to help.

More: How to handle the infertility blues during the holidays

Let me be clear: This doesn’t mean that we don’t love our families and friends or want to spend time with them — it just means that we’d prefer to do so without the enforced levels of cheer. And yes, of course we want our loved ones to enjoy themselves, and we won’t begrudge you that — whether that means decking the halls, frying up some latkes or staying in ordering takeout and pretending you’re part of a culture that does not celebrate a major December holiday.

An Irish exit

After spending basically all of my 20s living in Dublin, Ireland, and creating a nice little life for myself there, the economy totally tanked and — along with a lot of the population — I couldn’t find a job. In the months running up to having to reverse-immigrate at the end of December, I experienced several difficult events, including almost losing someone very close to me and being a primary caregiver.

More: Can kids experience holiday depression?

A chill in the air, coupled with strings of lights and a department store Muzak version of “Jingle Bells” takes me right back to Dublin during the holidays — trips back and forth to the hospital, sitting through a court’s decision not to prosecute a man who almost murdered my friend (because why would beating a woman within an inch of her life be considered a crime, Ireland?) not to mention having to crisscross the city trying to say one last hurried goodbye to the people I had deliberately chosen to be part of my life. Everything Christmas-related is a tangible reminder of a particularly traumatic time, on top of the fact that I felt as though I had failed and was forced to pack up and start over. Again.

But that’s just me. Everyone who is triggered by the holidays has their own reason, and the best gift you could give them is to respect that.

Rosemarie DeWitt became a mom of two a year ago

Rosemarie DeWitt is a mom of two. In fact, she has been for a year, but only shared the news publicly this week. During an interview with Ellen DeGeneres to promote her new movie La La Land, DeWitt revealed that she and her husband, actor Ron Livingston, have adopted a second daughter together.

More: Sleep training my baby made me a more confident mom

"She just turned 1 — I mean, she’s been with us for a year," said DeWitt. "Esperanza Mae, we call her ZaZa. She’s a little sweetheart."

ZaZa is little sister to 3-year-old Gracie James, whom the couple adopted in April 2013. Luckily, Gracie is happy with the new arrival. "They like each other a lot," DeWitt confirmed.

More: Kids stand up to hate this holiday season

ZaZa is actually a name in its own right — it's of Hebrew origin and means "movement." But the baby's full name, Esperanza, is a classic Spanish girl name meaning "hope, expectation." It's growing in popularity and re-entered the U.S. top 1,000 list after a three-year absence — perhaps due to jazz singer Esperanza Spalding, who beat Justin Bieber to win the Best New Artist Grammy in 2011.

Esperanzas in pop culture include the main character in the novel The House on Mango Street by Sandra Cisneros, the song "Esperanza" by Enrique Iglesias and the wife of Zorro in The Mask of Zorro.

Vanderpump Rules star Lala Kent narrows down who that mysterious boyfriend is

Lala Kent certainly is getting a lot of attention this week after she announced she was exiting Vanderpump Rules. She had confirmed to E! News that her time on the show was affecting her career and her relationship.

More: Now we officially know who's leaving Vanderpump Rules this season

Much has been made about that mysterious boyfriend, who may or may not be married, but it looks like Kent really wants us to guess who he is. On The Tomorrow Show with Keven Undergaro on Thursday, she narrowed down who the guy might be.

He’s not an actor nor a Hollywood executive like many fans had guessed, but he is in the public eye. Kent dropped the bomb about another reality show that would be perfect for her.

"I think WAGS would be fun,” she revealed.

When pressed further about the topic, Kent gave a pretty good reason as to why her man wouldn’t show his face on the Bravo show.

The Tomorrow Show with Lala Kent

The Tomorrow Show with Lala Kent

“He has a lot of endorsement deals, and a lot of things that I'm sorry, he's not going to screw up to appear on Vanderpump Rules,” she explained.

This bit of titillating news is going to send viewers scurrying to figure out who Kent’s boyfriend really is. Is he an athlete on a Los Angeles team? Or does he live in Los Angeles during the off-season?

She also didn’t mention what sport he played, but it has to be a high-profile athlete who is good enough to garner endorsement deals. It could be anyone at this point.

Perhaps we should go ask her former co-star James Kennedy, who not only know the identity of the mystery man, he’s met him.

More: You have to admit, VPR would really benefit from a Kristen Doute pregnancy

"James knows…they have met....it was funny because James and I have hooked up before, so my guy kind of teased him about it.” she shared. “My man gets nervous when I go with him by myself because, we hooked up before, so I think he thinks that that would continue. But it would never. Clearly, it wasn't as great as we both thought it would be."

While Kent’s boyfriend might be happy his girlfriend is safe with Kennedy, we wonder if he’s concerned his identity might be revealed sooner versus later. He’s been talked about so much that tabloids are probably sniffing around Kent to see who she is dating.

It does seem like the two are pretty serious because she not only quit Vanderpump Rules, she’s also stopped drinking after a verbal altercation with him.

More: VPR stars talk about Scheana & Shay's divorce — kind of

"I started being very, very vicious to my boyfriend. And it was not okay. So, I went on a vacation with friends — freaked out at him and I don't remember,” Kent said. “And the next day my mom flew out, begged me to go to one AA meeting. And I was there.”

We are salivating to find out who this guy is, but for now, we have to deal with the departure of Kent from the show. She’s adamant that she’s not coming back.

"I said, unless you want to fire the whole cast and just have me,” she summed up. “I will not be returning."

Don't feel bad for Survivor's Jay Starrett

Jay Starrett was booted from Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X in a nail-biting Tribal Council where he was duped into playing a fake Immunity Idol. It was absolutely heartbreaking to watch, but Jay doesn't seem to mind it whatsoever. In fact, he thinks it's funny. That was just a part of our conversation on the finale's red carpet with Jay where the 6th-place finisher also discussed how he found out Adam's mother had passed away.

SheKnows: You fell victim to a fake Immunity Idol. As that moment played out on TV, the studio audience was laughing at you. I truly felt bad about how it all unfolded. Could you hear the crowd's laughter backstage?

Jay Starrett: No, because I was laughing. Dude, it's a game. When funny stuff like that happens you gotta go with it and laugh.

SK: Who did you think made that Idol?

JS: I just looked around and David looked at me. I was like, David did it for sure. He looked at me and tapped my back.

SK: Despite the way you were eliminated, your exit from the game was very gracious.

JS: I respect the game so much. We're all here playing a game, so you can't take these things like stab wounds to the heart. It's a game. If you lose, you lose with pride, respect and you appreciate the people that beat you. It's life.

Jay Starrett on Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X

SK: From my perspective, it seemed like your game changed when Taylor was voted off. It was almost as if Taylor was a distracting you from the big prize.

JS: I was pretty focused the entire time. The story they showed was me growing in character, I guess. I was focused the entire time, honestly. I'm here to win. But in the beginning, I was with the Millennials tribe. You have to learn to adapt with these different players. With them, you can't seem to be too focused because they're gonna come for you. I'm not gonna sit with Tails and be like, "Yo, this is how we're gonna win."

SK: But when Taylor buried the tribe's food, you eventually ate some of it with him.

JS: I didn't really get to eat too much because at the merge I got sick from like salami or something, and I was sick for like three days. When he buried it all and I found out, I was like, "What are you doing? Dude, this isn't right. We should tell somebody." Then everyone was against me and I was like, "You know what? I'm gonna eat it."

SK: What was your dream final three?

JS: Me, David and Adam. I wanted to duke it out like men to see who won. If you win like that, then you are the sole Survivor.

Jay Starrett on Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X

SK: Adam won the $1 million in a landslide victory with every single vote. How quickly did you decide to give him your vote once the final three was determined?

JS: I knew immediately in my heart. I just followed my gut. When David went home I knew who my vote was for. It doesn't matter what anyone can say. Hannah flipped all the time, no offense to Hannah. With Ken, we bonded as competitors, but we never strategized together. I saw Ken voted Dave off, and I was more impressed with Adam. No. 1, his mom is at home sick. No. 2, he's got a million things on his mind even with the game on the line. That must be insane. He made his way through it all, so it's gotta go to him.

SK: Had David made it to the final three against Adam, who do you vote for?

JS: No idea. I have no idea. That would've been a question of do I respect strategy because David made it? Or do I respect emotion based of my love for Adam and he's a good dude? It's a mix.

Jay Starrett on Survivor: Millennials Vs. Gen-X
Image: CBS

SK: Before that final vote, you were the only person Adam confided in about his mom's health. His mom passed away just one hour after returning home from the game. How did you hear the news?

JS: He Facetimed me. I broke down. I was sitting with my mom and we started crying. I love that kid. Life does funny things to you.

Is Botox the next treatment for depression?

$

There have been a lot of pharmacological and therapeutic treatments for depression introduced in recent years, but a study published in the Journal of the American Academy of Dermatology now gives the more than 15 million American adults who suffer from depression a new option: Botox.

According to Jason S. Reichenberg, M.D., director of dermatology at the University of Texas-Austin and co-author of the study, researchers have found that Botox might ease the symptoms of depression.

More: What to consider before getting Botox

The study looked at four theories involving a possible correlation between Botox and depression, including:

  1. Botox yields a cosmetic effect, which indirectly leads to improved mood
  2. More pleasant facial expression leads to positive social feedback with resultant mood improvement
  3. Paralyzing frown muscles decreases signals to the brain to be sad
  4. Botox injections actually reach the brain, causing direct effects on emotional processing

Researchers set out to explore the idea that people who looked better would feel better, but quickly discovered that it wasn't that simple.

They found that patients had mixed feelings about the effects of the injections with some not liking the way they looked with Botox (but still saw their depression get better) and others who enjoyed their new look, but did not see a reduction in symptoms.

More: What they don't tell you about Botox

However, Reichenberg and his wife Michelle Magid did find that depression scores dropped 42 percent in patients who received Botox, compared with only 15 percent in participants who had a placebo.

And with the staggering number of Americans suffering from the debilitating effects of depression, it comes as no surprise that researchers and doctors are looking to alternative ways to treat this complex mental health condition.

There's only one thing Mariah Carey wants to do with her engagement ring: Wear it!

$

There's been much talk about Mariah Carey's 35-carat engagement ring and what it's destiny should be now that she and James Packer have split.

More: You guys, don't fall for the vid of Mariah Carey 'shading' James Packer

Some think she should give the ring back to Packer, others think a charity would benefit nicely from the money (the ring is worth $10 million), but it seems there's only one thing Carey wants to do with her ring: wear it.

And according to People magazine, she's still wearing it!

Carey and Packer decided to call time on their brief romance in October, but according to People, Carey was recently seen wearing the unmistakable ring (and it's not as though she doesn't have a lot of others to choose from too). However, despite how some may think it's weird that Carey is sporting a ring given to her by her ex, it's actually not all that strange because it could have significance for her in an entirely different way: it was designed by her longtime friend, Wilfredo Rosado — so it's possible she has sentimental attachment to the ring for this reason, plus there's also the fact that the emerald cut stone is just crazy beautiful.

It seems whatever bling Carey wears is going to attract attention from the media because, just today, Hollywood Life commented on a sparkler that the songstress was wearing while shopping in New York City on Dec. 15. The publication speculated as to whether it could have been a new engagement ring, this time from backup singer Bryan Tanaka (who Carey appears to be having a little fling with) — of course, as they later noted, it wasn't a new engagement ring, but rather the same one Packer gave her.

But, that just goes to prove that celebs can't wear any ring without someone placing too much importance on it, so if Carey wants to keep her engagement ring (and wear it) she should be able to do so free of judgement, right?

Scott Baio claims one of the Red Hot Chili Peppers' wives attacked him

Can we all just agree not to talk about politics for the next four (or, God forbid, eight) years?

More: Donald Trump talking about Ivanka in a sexual way is stomach-turning

It seems to be in everyone's best interest. Just ask Scott Baio, who claims he was attacked by Nancy Mack, the wife of Red Hot Chili Peppers drummer Chad Smith, over his support for Donald Trump.

Baio has been a Trump supporter for some time, making some pretty gross statements in support of the gross things the president-elect said while he was campaigning. Mack is apparently not a Trump supporter, as evidenced by the police report Baio filed against her with the Ventura County Sheriff's Office, accusing her of battery.

Page Six says the incident in question happened on Monday, when both Baio and Mack were attending an event with their young kids. Baio claims that Mack started out by verbally harassing him for supporting Trump and that the situation escalated until she was shaking and pushing him, screaming, "Grab 'em by the pussy!"

More: So, Teresa Giudice doesn't believe Donald Trump's accusers

Mack's friends claim that's not what went down at all, saying she was just joking around and showing Baio "how Trump hugs women." Neither Baio nor Mack has personally commented on the incident.

Baio's wife, however, took to Twitter and posted a lengthy rant, apparently pissed that Mack made a scene in front of their kids.

"Did HER sources say she yelled at our 9yr old asking if SHE WANTS SOMEONE 2 GRAB HER PUSSY?" Renee Sloan-Baio wrote. She also posted a photo of Mack, asking her followers, "does this look like a sane mother/lady 2 you?"

Olivia Wilde mocks breast-pump bra ad and we love her for it

It's no secret that Olivia Wilde is one of our favorite celebrity moms. She tells it like it is — especially when it comes to breastfeeding. Her latest gripe concerns an ad for a breast-pump bra.

More: Olivia Wilde has the right attitude toward breastfeeding

"This lady definitely did not recently birth a child who requires breastmilk to be pumped," the mom of two wrote on Instagram. And, well, she makes an excellent point. Those are not the abs, bright eyes and glowing skin of a typical breastfeeding mother.

Olivia Willde breastfeeding advert

Olivia Willde breastfeeding advert

While some comments on Wilde's Instagram post pointed out — quite rightly — that some mothers do have flat stomachs (even defined abs) not long after giving birth, those people seem to be missing her point. She's not having a dig at moms who snap back into their size-4 jeans two weeks after their babies are born. She's calling out advertising campaigns that tell us all moms should be trim and toned while they're still nursing their babies.

More: "Kangaroo care" linked to healthier babies

Because when do we ever see ads targeting new moms (for breast-pump bras or whatever else) featuring women who actually look like they've just given birth? Where are the saggy bellies, tired eyes and unwashed hair?

A quick internet search for "breast-pump bras" proves Wilde's point.

This mom means business.

And plenty of women do agree with the actress. "Yesssss realness. Pumping right now with my belly bulging over my yoga pants," wrote one.

"Amen. Maternity clothes are the same way," posted another.

In a 2015 interview with Shape, Wilde confessed she struggled to get used to her postpartum body after her first child was born. "I’m softer than I’ve ever been, including that unfortunate semester in high school when I simultaneously discovered Krispy Kreme and pot," she said. "The photos of me in this magazine have been generously constructed to show my best angles, and I assure you, good lighting has been warmly embraced. The truth is, I’m a mother, and I look like one."

Wilde gave birth to her second child with husband Jason Sudeikis, daughter Daisy Josephine, on Oct. 11. Their first child, son Otis Alexander, was born in 2014.

Top 10 underrated movies of 2016 you still need to see

Let's be honest: Not every year is a great year for movies, especially in Hollywood. Superhero movies, reboots, over-the-top period films and Kevin Hart comedies aren't for everyone, and sometimes it can feel like there just isn't enough variety coming out on the big screen.

More: There are 16 movies getting a ton of Oscar buzz right now

If you've had a hard time finding something you like at the movies this year, then I'm sorry to say you just might not be looking hard enough. Inside and outside of Hollywood, 2016 has produced a lot of fresh, fun films for audiences everywhere to enjoy — they just aren't always the most advertised or gushed over, and they can be pretty easy to miss. Fortunately, the year isn't over and movies are forever, so you still have plenty of time to catch up on the most underrated but mind-blowing movies of 2016.

1. Swiss Army Man

Swiss Army Man, also known as the Daniel Radcliffe farting corpse movie, is not for everyone. Eye in the Sky disappeared almost as soon as it was released, and the film's quick turnaround probably had something to do with the tricky subject matter: drone warfare. The movie asks whether innocent people can be sacrificed for the greater good and how drones are used.

The Edge of Seventeen isn't exactly underrated, but considering how fantastic it is, not nearly enough people are talking about it. The movie is a rare authentic teenage drama that will take you straight back to high school (in a good way). It's one of the most honest portrayals of a teenage girl I've ever seen.

6. Imperium

You're probably thinking to yourself, "How did I miss a movie where Daniel Radcliffe plays an FBI agent who goes undercover as a white supremacist?" Well, it's not a particularly cheerful film, but it is definitely worth a watch, especially in our current political climate.

7. Midnight Special

Before Jeff Nichols' Loving took awards season by storm, his other film, Midnight Special, had a slightly less enthusiastic reception from audiences. The movie, a quiet science-fiction drama, had a fair amount of buzz but fizzled at the box office.

Selena Gomez went quiet after announcing her hiatus from the music world — and the world at large — in late August. But she’s back in the studio, and though she’s not personally posting about it, her musically-inclined pals certainly are. “Music and love,” songwriter Justin Tranter posted on Instagram yesterday alongside a shot of Gomez applying eyeliner and seemingly glowing from the inside, possibly giving off her own light. (Rehab went well.) Tranter wrote “Hands to Myself” and “Love Myself” on Gomez’ latest album, Revival, so you know if these two are hanging, new tunes can’t be far behind.

Sundance Head says his bond with Blake Shelton helped him win The Voice

With five wins under his belt, it's clear that Blake Shelton knows what he's doing on The Voice. He always gets on well with the musicians on his team, but this season, there was something truly special about the connection between Shelton and Sundance Head. This connection has been obvious to hardcore fans from the beginning, but it became even more evident during an exclusive interview with the Season 11 victor.

More: Sundance Head wasn't the only Season 11 victor on The Voice

While chatting with SheKnows, Head credited Shelton for his win. According to Head, Shelton taught him to "trust [himself] and believe in [his] abilities." Shelton always encourages his contestants to be themselves, but it was particularly easy with Head, as the two have so much in common. Head explained, "We like a lot of the same things. We like to go to the woods a lot and do that kind of thing."

Sundance and Blake video

Sundance and Blake video

The connection goes far deeper than a few shared interests, however. Both Head and Shelton lost their brothers. Shelton continues to mourn his late brother, Richie, over 25 years after his passing. The same is true for Head, who was forced to say goodbye to his brother when he was just 9 years old. While recovering from this loss, he wrote his very first song.

Head explained that he and Shelton enjoyed a wonderful kinship due to their many shared interests and experiences. He added, "We recognized that. That was one thing that helped us to work together."

Shelton gets a good deal of the credit for Head's win, but American Idol may also have played a significant role. Head competed on the show nearly a decade ago, but at the time, he just wasn't ready to deal with constructive criticism. "There's just so many things I learned not to do on American Idol... I learned to be quiet and listen to what other people have to say."

Head believes he was a bit too big for his britches while competing on American Idol, but that all changed after he had kids and joined The Voice. "I just came out here with a lot of gratitude and a lot of graciousness. Paid attention. Every opportunity that I had to learn, that's what I tried to do."

The excitement is just beginning for Head, but he's still keeping his mind on what's important: his family. He's going to sing the national anthem at the upcoming Houston Texans game and then enjoy some quality family time. "I'm really excited to take my kids out to the woods to camp out. That's really a time I enjoy spending with them." Also in the near future? His 11th wedding anniversary on Christmas Day.

We loved Sundance Head on The Voice and are excited to see what he does next in his post-reality TV career. With his natural talent, his vulnerability and his unique way of connecting with fans, he has everything it takes to make it in the competitive music industry, all while remaining a wonderful husband and father.

There's one thing that's just not up for debate: Mariah Carey's "All I Want For Christmas Is You" is the single greatest Christmas song of all time.

But it's also the source of something that is definitely up for debate: Did Carey lip-sync the song when she performed at VH1's Divas Holiday: Unsilent Night concert?

The video of Carey's performance hit YouTube this week, and a war is waging in the comment section. From what the commenters are saying, there seem to be three options here:

  1. Carey sang the song live and all is good in the world
  2. Carey lip-synced her performance, which basically makes her completely talentless
  3. Carey sang live over a pre-recorded track, making it kind of seem like she lip-synced even though she didn't and giving the whole performance a weird, double-voice sound.

Every commenter belongs firmly to one of those camps, and isn't willing to give up any ground, so the debate rages on.

Come on, people. Who cares whether she actually sang it live or not? After incidents like Janet Jackson's infamously planned Super Bowl nip slip, can you really blame TV producers for not trusting celebs live on air with millions of families watching? Carey is still an amazing performer. Buy a ticket to one of her shows if seeing her live is that big a deal.

Do you think she was lip-syncing her Christmas performance? Watch the full performance here so you can judge for yourself, then comment below.
