Turns out, training two dogs can actually be easier than one

$

Anyone who has ever tried to train a dog knows what a struggle it can be. Some dog owners would probably even go so far as to say it was easier to potty train their kid than teach their dog to sit. Pet parents have been testing out new training methods since dogs became domesticated — positive reinforcement, shock collars, alpha dog method... the list goes on. But there's a new training method growing in popularity, and it's called mimicry.

Mimicry training is the idea that it's actually easier to train multiple dogs at once rather than one-on-one. Ideally, if one dog in the group learns a new behavior quickly, the other dogs will want to do the same. But how does it actually work, and is it really appropriate for every dog? We asked an expert to get some answers.

More: Introduce a new dog to the rest of your fur family with this advice

"There is kind of a little buzz about using mimicry in animal training right now," Carey Haas, certified dog training and behavior modification expert told SheKnows.

When and how to use mimicry

Haas said it's important to first work with each dog individually before bringing them together to ensure that the dogs understand the individual behaviors first. The dogs need to understand the behavior before pairing so they aren't just mimicking without really having the foundation of learning as well.

Haas explained the most common way she uses mimicry: "When I'm working with two dogs, I already have taught dogs their individual behaviors. If I want to teach a dog how to respond faster to a command, I want them to lay down quickly instead of saying it two or three times, I will do things like, the first dog that lays down gets the cookie and the second dog does not get the cookie. Frequently, with the dogs using competition and seeing the other dog lie down faster, I can start getting really fast downs from all the dogs because I'm using a little bit of mimicry and a little bit of competition to create an environment where I'm getting faster responses."

While Haas said pairing dogs together can be great training reinforcement, she doesn't recommend it as an initial method since she said dogs have the tendency to "go to the dark side."

More: 11 dog cancer symptoms you should know

"I always say, 'Dogs go to the dark side,'" Haas said. "If you have one 'good' dog — and usually that means the behavior that they do may not be very obedient, but it's just not problematic — and you bring another dog into the mix, what happens is that good obedience starts to decline because that dog will sometimes follow the other dog around. They wind up skewing to the easiest path, which is, 'that's good enough.'"

She added, "It's kind of like a coach that has too many kids. They're not doing enough close coaching and picking up on things. Some dogs may follow along but not really pick up on the behavior."

Using mimicry with puppies

"If you're trying to train two puppies at the same time, that's going to be a lot of work," Haas cautioned.

Though she did say mimicry works well with potty training, "I hear people telling me all the time, 'Well, I never had to potty train Fluffy because she was potty trained by the other dog.' So those types of behaviors I hear all the time, and I know it's easier."

Generally, however, Haas doesn't recommend using mimicry with puppies, especially if they're from the same litter.

"One thing to keep in mind, really good, reputable breeders will not sell two puppies to one person because the puppies will wind up bonding with each other and they can develop all kinds of bond and focus issues," Haas explained. "Unless that person is really an expert, then the puppies will end up bonding so closely that it can be an issue down the line."

More: Inquiring (and grossed-out) minds want to know — why do dogs eat poop?

If you are considering two puppies from the same litter, keep in mind that Haas recommends you take them to different training classes and take other training steps to ensure that as adults they are obedient. Haas cautioned that the puppies can end up bonding with each other and not the owner, and advises puppy-seekers to avoid it altogether as a precaution.

Other uses of mimicry

Haas was sure to say there are exceptions to the general mimicry rules, just like with everything else. For example, if she's working with a "scaredy-dog," as she called them, then she will put the fearful dog with a confident dog and have them work together with specific training methods in order to boost the confidence of the scaredy-dog. This technique takes a skilled leader, though, so we recommend hiring a knowledgeable trainer like Haas before attempting this one on your own, as it can be detrimental to your dog's behavior if not approached properly.

For more in depth advice on this topic, Haas recommends a book and video series called Do As I Do: Using Social Learning to Train Dogs by Claudia Fugazza, which can be found at Tawzer Dog. Haas called the series the gold standard on mimicry for those interested in learning more.

Don’t be afraid to disappoint your kid this holiday season

December can be a special month filled with nights cuddled on the couch watching holiday cartoons and indulging in one too many Christmas cookies. It's also really easy to get stressed out over fulfilling everyone's gift wishes — especially when our own kids are the ones doing the asking.

There's nothing like watching a child's face light up as they open a gift they've been dying for. But while Santa Claus isn't real, our bank accounts are, and sometimes we can't get our kids everything they want. Still, it can be hard not to see that Christmas list as a list of demands instead of a list of requests. Gift guilt is real, and if you let it, it can take all of the joy out of the season.

More: Great indoor gifts for the family about to be stuck inside until June

But these expert strategies will help you leave gift guilt in the trash where it belongs, right next to that fruitcake your cousin sent.

1. Manage their expectations long before the holidays arrive

By explaining to your children in advance that not everyone gets everything they want for the holidays, you'll go a long way toward preventing a meltdown (and your own guilt spiral) the morning of the holiday. "I'm not a big fan of Christmas 'lists' because it implies that it's a to-do list that will be filled," says Dr. Ellen Braaten, associate director of The Clay Center for Young Healthy Minds at Massachusetts General Hospital. "Instead, have a discussion with your child about ideas and potential gifts. Talk about why some might be appropriate and some might not."

2. Let older children in on your decision in advance

For older kids who have an understanding of finances, honesty is the best policy. "If there is an item that's beyond your family's budget (or your ability to get in time for the holidays, such as the latest sold-out game system), put it on a list of long-term wishes that you can work toward as a family," Braaten suggests. "Children don't generally enjoy surprises as much as adults do and they especially don't enjoy surprises that involve disappointments."

More: Help your kids get a better understanding of the true meaning of Hanukkah

3. Relieve Santa of his "naughty or nice" duties

For young children who believe that they'll get what they want for Christmas if they behave, not getting everything on their wish list could lead them to think they've been bad, which could be confusing or upsetting. As tempting as it is to use the old "Santa's watching you" line as a way to get your kid to behave in the grocery store, unless you're willing to buy out Toys R Us every year to make your child feel like they've been good, it's better to stop using Santa to do your dirty work. Dr. Vanessa Lapointe, registered psychologist and author of Discipline Without Damage: How To Get Your Kids To Behave Without Messing Them Up, urges parents to seek other ways of getting kids to listen. "This whole adult manipulation of something as warm and magical as Christmas into something designed to get kids to fall into line the other 364 days of the year needs to be done away with," she says.

If you're guilty of using Santa as a scapegoat, Lapointe has a great idea to shift your child's focus: "If you have been telling your children about this list all along and need to undo that, then find a creative way — like a 'news bulletin' from the North Pole — to take the naughty/nice list right out of the equation."

4. Know it's good for kids to experience disappointment

Even though you may feel like the world's worst parent because you couldn't find a Hatchimal this year, you're not. Not only will that toy likely be forgotten about in month, but it's actually good for your children to not get what they want once in a while. "Not always getting what you want is a good thing," says Braaten. "It builds resilience and helps us deal with the disappointments that are inevitable in life."

Lapointe notes that even during the holidays, we're still parents whose job it is to set appropriate limits for our kids."Overspending or purchasing items you'd rather they not have does not land you in a place of being on it for your children. The secret at the core of being a parent who is in charge is to truly embody the understanding that you have got this. Part of that is to have appropriate limits in all aspects of life for your children — including gift-giving at the holidays."

Yoko Ono remembers John Lennon with emotion message on gun violence

It's been 36 years today since John Lennon, guitarist and vocalist for The Beatles, was shot and killed by Mark David Chapman. Lennon was just 40 years old at the time.

Despite the decades since his death, his widow Yoko Ono admitted in a Facebook post today that she still misses him.

More: John Lennon quotes & lyrics that still speak to us 36 years after his death

Her message seemed to echo the sentiments around the world that on the anniversary of Lennon's death, it's important to rally for the end of gun violence, which has persisted in great numbers for too long in this country.

"Every day, 91 Americans are killed with guns," Ono wrote, alongside a photo of bloodied glasses. The glasses look like they could have belonged to Lennon himself on the day of the shooting, though that is unconfirmed as of now. "We are turning this beautiful country into a War Zone. Together, let’s bring back America, the green land of Peace. The death of a loved one is a hollowing experience. After 36 years, our son Sean and I still miss him."

Supernatural's [Spoiler] having a baby isn't something to celebrate

Well, Supernatural definitely didn't skimp on the cliffhangers in its Season 12 midseason finale. Basically, there is more bad than good coming when the series returns in January. Oh, and a baby. Yeah, someone is pregnant.

More: Supernatural really needs to put Lucifer back in the cage or bring back Mark Pellegrino

The episode focused mainly on Lucifer taking on a new vessel — the President of the United States. For real, Lucifer became POTUS. Well, actually, he became LOTUS. During his time running the nation, Lucifer also had some fun with one of the president's employees. He became quite sexually experienced and truly enjoyed it.

He liked it so much that he kept having sex with Kelly (played by Courtney Ford). Oh and then she got pregnant. We're suprised it took Supernatural this long to integrate this kind of story line, but now Sam, Dean and Castiel have to worry about the spawn of Lucifer.

At the episode's end (after extracting Lucifer from the president and getting rid of him for now thanks to Mr. Ketch who finally showed his face), Castiel tried to convince Kelly that she couldn't keep the child, because it is an unholy abomination. She was almost on board, but then decided that after feeling the child inside her she couldn't follow through. So now Kelly and the future possible mini-Lucifer is nowhere to be found. This definitely doesn't call for celebration or a baby shower.

More: Supernatural’s Dean making a deal with Billie is so going to end badly

Sam and Dean
Image: Tumblr

If that isn't bad enough, after battling Lucifer and saving the president's life, Sam and Dean were arrested by Secret Service agents for the attempted assination of the president. The Winchesters have been screwed before, but now they are really screwed. Like they usually do, Crowley and Rowena bolted after Lucifer was defeated and Cas left with Kelly before Sam and Dean's arrest, so no one knows where they are or what the heck happened to them.

Based on the promo for the next episode, Sam and Dean haven't been seen or heard from for "six weeks, 10 days and two hours." Good thing it looks like Castiel and Mary are working together to try and find them, so here's hoping they are successful. Also, who else is looking forward to more Mary and Cas scenes?

With Sam and Dean MIA and Lucifer's baby growing by the minute, Supernatural has some major messes to clean up — and stat.

To see how or if any of the above are resolved, catch new episodes of Supernatural when it returns Thurdsay, Jan. 26 in its new timeslot at 8/7c on The CW.

Well thanks, Katie Holmes, for ruining our Dawson's Creek revival dreams

With all the TV revivals out right now from Gilmore Girls to Fuller House, we thought maybe (please!) Dawson's Creek would be the next on the list. But Katie Holmes squashed that dream in a recent interview with SiriusXM’s Just Jenny Show.

More: Now we'll never know the truth about Katie Holmes & Jamie Foxx's romance

"I don’t think we’re going to do a reunion," Holmes admitted when asked.

On the up side, there's still hope for some reunion pictures, at least, since Holmes did confirmed that she and her Dawson's Creek costars, James Van Der Beek, Michelle Williams and Joshua Jackson, do "see each other every now and then."

Dawson's Creek ended it's run in 2003 on the WB after six seasons. Holmes said even those she's "grown up," she still has good memories from her time on the show.

"I think that the charm of the show was [series creator] Kevin Williamson's writing, and it was of that time, and it gave teenagers this voice," Holmes said. "It was a very, very special time — a special show, and I loved every minute of it.”

More: Katie Holmes' reaction to Leah Remini's ABC special is fascinating (VIDEO)

Earlier this year, Jackson said he would be open to the idea of the reunion but that it would be tricky.

"People always forget that Michelle Williams’ Jen character was killed off, so they really need to figure out a way around that," Jackson said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight. "I guess she could come back as a ghost, or they could do it like Dallas did and have someone wake up and find her alive in the shower 20 years later. That could work!"

Van Der Beek also echoed Holmes' words during an interview with HuffPost Live back in March.

"Well [creator] Kevin Williamson said he didn’t want to write it, and he didn’t think it would be artistically gratifying for the fans, which was all the excuse I needed to say. I can’t conceive of a scenario where people would think, ‘That’s so great. I’m glad they did it. That was totally worthwhile and not cheesy,'" Van Der Beek said.

Project Runway reminds us fashion is not exclusive to Paris and New York

The Project Runway finale is almost here, but first, the remaining five designers must depart New York to seek inspiration from another region. In the past, the show's designers have visited sophisticated locations such as Paris, Barcelona and Los Angeles. This year, however, they switched it up by visiting Austin. Heidi Klum hoped that Austin's slogan would convince the designers to "keep it weird" for their unconventional challenge.

More: There's more to Project Runway's Cornelius Ortiz than his bad attitude

Instead of shopping for their unconventional look at Mood, the designers hit up Georgetown Farm Supply and Stubb’s BBQ. The materials they found there were far from typical; Rik Villa used dog leashes, Laurence Basse used birdseed and Erin Robertson used mealworms. Perhaps most shockingly, these strange materials created some very memorable and very couture looks.

The best designers can take inspiration from anything and anywhere. By forcing them to embrace their inner weird in Austin, Project Runway got a better look at what the designers can produce under pressure and without the typical resources of Mood. It was therefore an excellent challenge, or, at least, that's what we think. Several viewers disagree, however, as many were quick to badmouth the challenge on Twitter. Evidently, Austin just can't compare to Paris and other fashion powerhouses.

The only real complaint we had with this week's visit to Austin was that it all felt a little bit stereotypical. Austin is a wackier, more fashion-forward than many people suspect, but while Project Runway sort of captured the city's vibe, it lost a lot of the eclectic charm, instead opting for outdated stereotypes and an awkward Best Western promo.

More: Roberi Parra is Project Runway's most underrated contestant

Austin is no Paris, but it does have a vibrant fashion scene and plenty of opportunities for inspiration. It's nice to see Project Runway expanding its reach and not assuming that only select European cities can provide adequate fashion inspiration. Hopefully, future contestants will also be able to hit up unexpected and interesting cities in the interest of capturing inspiration from new and valuable sources.

More: Erin Robertson has become Project Runway's ultimate one-trick pony

What did you think of this week's unconventional looks on Project Runway? Should the designers have skipped Austin and visited Paris instead? Or did you appreciate seeing something a little different before the finale? Comment and share your opinion below.

What does a Trump presidency mean for nursing moms? Clue: it's not great

$
0
0

In May, working moms welcomed a new overtime rule published by the Department of Labor that would give millions of them the opportunity to receive additional overtime compensation, or a higher salary. The rule would also require employers to provide reasonable break time and a private space (not a restroom) for women to pump breast milk. This would make it easier for mothers to continue breastfeeding after returning to work after giving birth.

More: Keira Knightley's daughter had the best reaction to Donald Trump's win

Many employers have already revised their policies to reflect the new rule, but it wasn't going to be a legal requirement for them to do so until Dec. 1. However, that date has now passed and it's currently in a state of limbo, due to a federal judge in Texas putting it on hold following a lawsuit filed by business groups and states who oppose expansion of the overtime laws.

Middle class workers — not just working mothers — would benefit from the new overtime rule, via more money in their pockets, or more free time. A positive legacy from the Obama administration for millions of Americans. But Obama's successor, President-elect Donald Trump, soon-to-be top dog at the Departments of Labor and Justice, could do everything in his power to crush the new rules. After all, he insisted last year that wages are too high.

More: 7 ways Donald Trump is exactly like a toddler

Working, nursing mothers are not a sub-section of the population that can rely on Trump's support by any stretch of the imagination. In 2015, an attorney claimed that Trump had an "absolute meltdown" and called her "disgusting" when she requested a break from a 2011 deposition to pump breast milk.

It shouldn't come as any surprise that working mothers (nursing or otherwise) aren't a priority for Trump. Based on his campaign trail and his belief that parenting is women's work, can we really expect him to increase support to working families, or introduce paid maternity leave that reflects modern families, or improve the daycare system, or take steps to close the gender pay gap?

Another Trump-shaped blow to mothers concerns the Affordable Care Act, which Trump pledged to repeal. This law give mothers, mothers-to-be and their kids crucial access to healthcare, and includes several provisions supporting breastfeeding as a life-saving and money-saving health measure. Under the act, insurance companies are required to provide lactation support and consultation, which can make a huge difference to moms unsure about how to breastfeed, use a pump and overcome common feeding issues. It also makes it mandatory for insurance companies to pay for breast pumps, which undoubtedly makes it easier for mothers to keep up their milk supply after going back to work.

More: The weird breastfeeding problems no one tells you about at birthing class

A mom shouldn't have to choose between breastfeeding her baby and going back to work to earn money to support her family. But in the current political climate, that's the choice what far too many of them are faced with. Four years under a Trump administration is certainly not going to improve matters.

If you're concerned about the impact Donald Trump will have on the lives of working mothers and their children, you can take action to protect and improve their rights. Support local groups who advocate for change at local and state level. Add your voice to the outcry against a repeal of the Affordable Care Act and help ensure moms can rely on these crucial protections.

Congress passes groundbreaking postpartum depression bill

$

Any woman who has suffered through postpartum depression knows both how devastating it is and, if we received treatment, how fortunate we were to get help. Luckily, thanks to a bill recently passed by Congress, soon every woman will be able to get screened and treated for postpartum depression.

Approximately 600,000 women experience postpartum depression every year (that's more than the number of people who will sprain their ankles or have a stroke) and some fear that the actual number may be as high as 1 million. Of those women, only 15 percent currently receive treatment. There are a number of reasons for this. Some women aren't educated about PPD. Some are but don't seek help due to the stigma attached. Some doctors don't provide regular screenings for PPD. Additionally, many women can't afford any of the treatment options.

More: I wanted help with postpartum depression, but there was none to be found

In an effort to help the thousands of women who suffer alone, last week Congress passed the "Bringing Postpartum Depression Out of the Shadows Act." This legislation will provide grants to states to "establish, expand, or maintain culturally competent programs for screening and treatment of women who are pregnant, or who have given birth within the preceding 12 months, for maternal depression."

PPD can be debilitating and, in some cases, fatal. A study published in a 2013 edition of the Journal of the American Medical Association Psychiatry found that 1 in 5 women with PPD thought about harming themselves and that "suicide accounts for about 20% of postpartum deaths and is the second most common cause of mortality in postpartum women." But even for women who never think about hurting themselves, PPD can be overwhelming.

More: Why I went on antidepressants during my pregnancy

I assumed I would be fine after I gave birth to my twins in 2008, especially considering that I had gone through infertility and IVF in order to have them. But I wasn't. Far from it. I thought my life was over and could see only misery and darkness ahead. I could barely function. Thankfully, the nurse practitioner at my six-week postpartum appointment noticed something was wrong and put me on the path to recovery. I can't imagine how I would have made it without her help.

Now, thanks to H.R. 3235, more women will be informed about PPD, and most important, will have access to the help they need and deserve.

7 things you need to know about the transgender population in the U.S.

Earlier this week, the National Center for Transgender Equality released the largest survey of transgender individuals ever conducted in the United States, and many of the findings are stark.

An estimated 1.4 million adults in the United States identify as transgender — doubling estimates from a decade ago. Studies like this one are important because increasing visibility could lead to changing policies and attitudes more supportive of the transgender population.

More: Gender identity 101: A guide to understanding transgender issues

While so much of the focus on transgender issues in the media has been on bathroom use, this survey highlights challenges faced by an already marginalized population.

Here’s what you need to know:

1. Almost half of transgender people have been sexually assaulted

Transgender individuals experience disproportionately higher levels of mistreatment and violence, including 54 percent experiencing verbal harassment in schools, 10 percent reporting violence toward them from an immediate family member and 47 percent being sexually assaulted at some point in their lifetime.

2. The attempted suicide rate among transgender individuals is nine times higher than the general population

The discrimination and stigma the transgender population faces has a serious impact on their mental health, with 39 percent of respondents saying that they had experienced serious psychological distress in the month prior to completing the survey, compared to 5 percent of the American public. Also, 40 percent of participants reported that they had attempted suicide in their lifetime — nearly nine times the national rate (4.6 percent).

3. Identity documents are a big problem

Only 11 percent of survey participants said that all their forms of identification had their preferred name and gender, with 68 percent reporting that none of their IDs contained the correct information.

4. Rates of HIV are five times higher than the U.S. population

Transgender women of color reported a higher rate of HIV (3.4 percent) than the rest of the survey participants (1.4 percent) compared to only 0.3 percent for the rest of the country. The differences are especially pronounced among black transgender women, 19 percent of whom live with HIV.

5. Transgender people are more than twice as likely to live in poverty

Almost one-third (29 percent) of participants reported that they were living in poverty, more than twice the rate of the rest of the American population (14 percent). Along the same lines, the unemployment rate among respondents (15 percent) was three times higher than the national rate (5 percent).

6. Things aren’t easy for those who can find a job

More than three-quarters (77 percent) of participants reported that they have actively tried to prevent mistreatment at work, including hiding or delaying their gender transition or quitting their job. Another 30 percent said that they had been fired, denied a promotion or had experienced another form of mistreatment.

7. Almost one-third have been homeless at some point in their lifetime

Access to housing impacts many transgender individuals, with 30 percent of participants responding that they have been homeless at some point, and 26 percent of those who experienced it in the past year avoided staying in a shelter because they feared mistreatment based on their identity.

One model used Gigi Hadid & Gisele Bündchen's ads to highlight a diversity problem

On Monday night, the Victoria's Secret Fashion Show might have seemed more diverse than usual, with models like Jourdana Phillips and Maria Borges rocking natural hair, along with a record number of Asian models walking in the show.

However, it's not enough for just one fashion brand to slowly start diversifying its modeling pool. High-fashion has a history of minimal racial diversity that has only begun to be amended recently. In a world that is increasingly more progressive, there should be no excuse for the fashion world to take so long to catch up.

Just look at Liberian-born model Deddeh Howard's Black Mirror project, which perfectly highlights the lack of diversity in the fashion industry. "Seeing Jasmine Tookes wearing the most expensive bra at the Victoria’s Secret Fashion Show was so inspiring, we need more of those moments," Howard posted on her blog. (Tookes was only the third woman of color in the show's history to wear the bra.)

In the Black Mirror project, Howard recreated high-end fashion advertisements that feature white women— Gigi Hadid, Linda Evangelista and Gisele Bündchen — but with herself instead. Howard stated in her blog that she wants the project to be a positive message about her race.

"In a time where black people too often are in the media for being underrepresented at important events such as the Oscars or make headlines for being targeted by the police," she said, "I felt it was time to do something positive and inspiring about my race. For too long the negativity seemed to take over in the public eye."

The LA-based model opened up about her experience as a black woman in the industry, saying, "Even though I was told by those agencies that I have an amazing look and wish they could represent me, they already have a black model. Besides having an abundance of white models. It seemed as if one or two black models on the roster are enough to represent us all. When you are told that, trust me, it feels bizarre."

The Bachelor's Becca Tilley may beat Nick Viall to the altar in 2017

The Bachelor is helping people find love, even off the TV screen.

More: Even the job titles of The Bachelor Season 21 ladies are dramatic

Two Bachelor alums, Becca Tilley and Robert Graham, are dating now — and things seem to be getting pretty serious.

Even though Tilley and Graham didn't meet on-screen, Bachelor Nation definitely played a part in their relationship. They met because they were both past stars on the show — Tilley was a contestant on Chris Soules' season and later on Ben Higgins' season, while Graham competed for Desiree Hartsock's love and then became one of the first bachelors to hit the beach on the first season of Paradise.

More: Wait, so are Ben Higgins and Lauren Bushnell engaged or done?

Tilley and Graham have been friends for a long time, sparking dating rumors with their adorable Instagram posts together, but they only confirmed earlier this week that they're actually dating. And they're moving pretty quickly, because they also dished that Graham just met Tilley's family.

"He met all of my family [Sunday] night, except for my brother," Tilley said at the launch party for her new blog. "Everyone loved him."

Tilley and Graham had their first date months ago, but he lived in Los Angeles while she lived in San Diego, and with the distance, "things just really didn't happen," Tilley explained. But last summer, Tilley moved to LA, and she and Graham started hanging out again.

"We’ve been a little more than friends for a while," she said. "But finally I admitted it to myself that I liked him more than that."

She added that she realized that she "would not be happy if he started dating someone else," and that made it official.

More: The fourth — not the third — time may have been a charm for Nick Viall

"This is so natural, it’s easy. He’s not some stranger that I don’t know," Tilley gushed.

Parental Advisory: My friend's baby hashtags are so annoying

$

Welcome back to Parental Advisory, where I answer all of your social media and IRL parenting etiquette questions. This week, we're #blessed to talk about how parents use #hashtags on social media.

Question:

My friend became a mom a few days ago. She was not a terrible oversharer throughout pregnancy but she is a sports junkie who posts every time she works out (every day). She just posted a first photo of her kid with the first name and second name hashtagged. I really want to comment something that will not be rude but let her know I don't like that trend. What is the point in hashtagging the name? Would it sound bitchy if I say something about her hashtag in the comments? I feel like perhaps she needs a little reminder to not become an annoying parent. Or is it already too late? This is only her third "daily photo" after giving birth (and each included that hashtag). I care about her but I feel like if she continues to be "that mom" I will have to unfollow her for my own sanity.

— A.

Answer:

While I appreciate your honesty, A., I think you already know before my telling you that yes, it would be both rude and bitchy to tell your friend how and what to post on social media based on your preferences. That's why STFU, Parents exists, so parents can read up on good posting habits before they start Snapchatting their morning sickness or broadcasting their mucus plugs on Facebook live. STFU, Parents is a resource, and its purpose is to entertain and guide parents on various social media do's and don'ts.

Your purpose, as a friend, is to be supportive and encouraging rather than create new ways to be divisive. New parents are usually extra sensitive after having a baby, so even if the outward appearance on your friend's end is all #smiles and heart emojis, what's happening behind the scenes is almost certainly more vulnerable and raw than that. So your job is to be compassionate and patient and to merely imagine all the things you would like to say to her about her stupid hashtags but can't.

Daily pics
Image: STFU Parents

The reality is, you're annoyed by her hashtags because hashtags are inherently annoying. And even though I can't recommend that you enlighten her, perhaps with some kind of diagram or flowchart, on just what makes hashtags so insufferable, I'm with you 1,000 percent on thinking she should resist the lure of hashtags. It would be wise for us all to, really, and everyone who's gotten a little #hashtaghappy knows what I'm talking about. Sure, hashtags are tempting in the way that most technological gimmicks and tools are at first, but using them can quickly get addictive and spin out of control. It's one thing to post a picture of your baby once a week and use a name hashtag to make searching for those particular photos easier, but it's another thing to use hashtags as corny punch lines, humblebrag devices or tactics to increase follower counts and page views. One reader wrote in and said, "I was wondering your thoughts on passive aggressive hashtagging? Adding a # sign in front of incredibly long, rude sentences seems to be a huge trend among the sanctimommies." Another said, "Am I the only person who thinks it's weird to post about your baby's circumcision with the hashtag #gothisweeweewacked"? Whether it's the number of hashtags used, or the context in which they're used, hashtag-heavy posts are often cringe-inducing disasters.

Crossfit
Image: STFU Parents

Indeed, there can be a huge disparity between parents who use hashtags to be playful versus those who use them to drive home a point, show off or disparage other parents in some way. Consider the differences between a mom who posts a picture of her sleeping baby with the hashtags #bella #bellamadison #babybella #bellaboo #mybella #jellybella #bellasmommy #momlife, compared to another mom posting a picture of herself breastfeeding with the hashtags #breastisbest #bestmommy #breastmommy #breastfeedingandproud #downwithformula #formulastinks  #exclusivebreastfeedingmom #EBF. Both moms are over-the-top with their hashtag usage, but at least the first one isn't outwardly dissing other parents or commenting on a hot-button topic just to be provocative.

When parents use hashtags to communicate their superiority in some way — with tags like #mykidisbetterthanyourkid or #anythingformybabies — they go from being harmlessly irritating to spiteful and offensive. Hashtags, when used correctly, should connect themes or connect us with each other, not serve as some kind of shorthand for "avoid me; I suck."

Groceries
Image: STFU Parents

The longer we live in a post-#hashtag world, the more I think parents (and probably people in general) are divided into two types of groups: those who use hashtags lovingly, jokingly and/or to keep track of certain pictures and those who use hashtags to be smug, alienating and/or antagonizing. Hence, if I can't suggest to parents to stop using hashtags altogether — which I do recommend, #highly — may I at least make a plea for parents to use their hashtags in good health? If you're going to inspire frequent eye-rolls by posting #dailyphotos of your #preciousangels, try to be considerate about it. Assume your friends haven't popped up in the comments to instruct you get off the #hashtagtrain because it would be rude to do so, but also know they despise your hashtags even more than your daily postings about the gym. Those #babygirl hashtags are too repetitive, and those #momlife hashtags aren't that funny. Hashtag trust me, hashtag not even kidding, hashtag sorry not sorry.

Why Lena Dunham and I both reveal and hide our endometriosis

$

Last week, Lena Dunham revealed that she has spent most of 2016 struggling with complications from endometriosis, including having three surgeries.

Like myself, Dunham has the misfortune of having aggressive endometriosis that has affected at least one of her ovaries, and has had three surgeries. And like myself, Dunham is a woman struggling to be a fierce, creative, hardworking writer in a fast-paced, demanding career, in a world that doesn’t get why this disease is so problematic.

More: What OB-GYNs want women to know about endometriosis

Endometriosis is more common than breast cancer: It affects legions of U.S. women. For reasons not yet understood, endometrial tissue grows outside of the uterus, in the abdominal or vaginal cavity, on organs and more rarely, even in the lungs. The tissue forms lesions, which bleed and secrete hormones, and when the lesions heal, they form thick scar tissue that can pull on the delicate internal tissues, causing great pain. The secretions from the lesions fill the body with toxins that are difficult to process, often causing pregnancy-mimicking bloating and pain ranging from stabbing to searing to burning to deep aching. And that’s just the basics.

The only currently understood treatment to this disease is excision surgery with an endometriosis specialist. There are other components — nutrition and food intolerances being almost (but not) equally important — but it is this specific type of surgery that gives women their functional, pain-free lives back.

One of Dunham’s surgeries was to treat an endometrioma — a growth full of blood and toxins. Mine, on my left ovary, grew to the size of a grapefruit. I could feel it there, tucked into my pelvic bone. I had lived with it for almost a year.

Teaching preschool, I'd bend over to pick up a child and feel it there, a hard fist of pain. It was similar to when, in the later stages of pregnancy, the baby pushes down on your vagina, and it swells and hurts.

I was also exhausted: bones aching, muscles jellied, brain foggy, eyes swollen and closing of their own accord. The exhaustion part of this disease has various causes, ranging from the anemia many women with endometriosis struggle with to chronically low levels of vital vitamins (such as B-12 or D) to the fatigue of a liver working overtime to process excess estrogen and toxins.

More: 10 things too many people get wrong about endometriosis

When I read in Dunham’s essay that she snapped a cheerful Instagram photo of herself in snazzy sparkle shoes, posing in the sunshine, and then went back to bed, overcome with fatigue, I just nodded. I so, so get it. Sometimes, the only defense I have against the drumbeat of endo is to put on my best face and fucking fake it. Other times, I take off the makeup, slide of my sparkle shoes and unzip my jeans to reveal a bulbous belly.

Part of what is so disorienting about a chronic disease like endometriosis is the feeling that your identity is being taken over by a literal body politic: the realities of pain, nausea, bloating and fatigue are horrible yet mundane, tragic yet boring, all-consuming yet still just such a small part of who we are. I want to be real, to get support, to be seen, but I also want to be much more than a collection of health bulletins.

More: Pregnancy after endometriosis

That’s why the same woman who purposefully fakes a New York moment also writes a blisteringly honest essay about her disease, her physical struggles, and enduring three surgeries in 12 months.

After my third surgery and recovery, I had a long reprieve from my endometriosis symptoms. I was elated to reclaim my body and my identity. No longer did I have to decide whether to tell people the real reason or not when canceling plans or retreating from communicating for weeks. Still, I kept scrolling through the blogs and articles and Facebook groups on endometriosis to give back to others what I had learned and to remind myself not to take a sunny day and a working body for granted.

Blake Shelton & Gwen Stefani are running out of time to hit their marriage goal

If Blake Shelton and Gwen Stefani are going to stick with their wedding plans, they'll be tying the knot literally any day now.

More: Blake Shelton's favorite topic of conversation is definitely Gwen Stefani

For months, it's been widely rumored that the two stars plan to be married by New Year's. That gives them about three weeks to tie the knot, which is definitely not a lot of time. Luckily, all signs point to them making it, including the latest clue: Stefani was photographed at a Beverly Hills jewelry store this week.

Other reports say that despite arguing about a lot of the details, Stefani and Shelton finally have their wedding plans completely finalized, which would make this a good time for Stefani to swing by the jewelry store and do some ring shopping.

Radar Online reports that after battling over their plans, they've decided to get married at the Beverly Hills Church of the Good Shepherd. May 5 is a date that's flying around recently, but that goes against all the prior rumors that say the couple are definitely going to make it down the aisle before 2016 is over.

More: Gwen Stefani thanks Blake Shelton for "kissing her back to life"

Sources say the guest list was another point of contention.

"They can hardly agree on anything!" an insider revealed. "Gwen wants to go big on this — and Blake wanted to make it an informal affair down home in Tennessee or their new place in Oklahoma — but he’s not willing to go to the mat against her."

And Stefani reportedly really meant it when she said big — 700 guests were on her list.

"She also wanted to have a bunch of celebrity music stars perform, but he didn’t want to turn the wedding into Woodstock," the source explained. The wedding will still be huge, however. The source revealed that Stefani and Shelton compromised at 400 guests, including plenty of big celebrity names.
