Gwyneth Paltrow's Thanksgiving pic proves co-parenting doesn't have to suck

Gwyneth Paltrow has copped a fair amount of flak over the last few years, and not all of it was directed at the bank-breaking products on her lifestyle site, Goop. When Paltrow and Chris Martin announced their separation after 11 years of marriage, their intention to "consciously uncouple" attracted ridicule.

More: These celebs may have split but they've got co-parenting figured out

But fast-forward two years, and their critics should feel pretty stupid. If there was ever an example of how to parent during separation and divorce (the couple divorced in July 2016), it's Paltrow and Martin. Whether you call it consciously uncoupling or simply doing what's best for the kids, it's worked for them.

Paltrow posted a photo on her Instagram page Wednesday that says it all. The shot is of Martin and 10-year-old son Moses locked in an embrace with the caption, "Here is to reunions, togetherness, family, and love love love. Happy thanksgiving eve, everyone. Love, gp."

That's how you do Thanksgiving, co-parenting style.

Paltrow and Martin, who are also parents to 12-year-old daughter Apple, often spend the holidays together as a family. At the start of the year, Paltrow shared a pic of herself and her ex-husband at Disneyland.

In March, Martin opened up about the separation, telling The Sunday Times, "It's always out there in the media, but I have a very wonderful separation-divorce. I've lived a lot since then. It's a divorce, but it's a weird one."

"You can come at it very aggressively and blame and blame," the Coldplay frontman continued. "Or you can put yourself in the garage, so to speak. Take yourself apart and clean off the bits. Reassemble."

Paltrow has been in a relationship with Glee co-creator Brad Falchuk since August 2014, while Chris is currently dating English actress Annabelle Wallis.

Important announcement: Breasts aren't sexual when they're feeding babies

Breastfeeding vlogger Tasha Maile has divided public opinion this week. The mother of two sons (aged 1 and 3) has a YouTube channel, Spiritual Tasha Mama, where she posts videos about overcoming insomnia, a vegan lifestyle, freebirthing and breastfeeding. In her case, tandem breastfeeding — she regularly films herself breastfeeding both children at the same time.

More: Don't judge me for breastfeeding my 5-year-old

Some critics of Maile have labeled her breastfeeding videos "incestuous," "pornographic" and "creepy." YouTube has also removed her right to make money from advertising on those videos. And then there are the comments from dozens of men who are, um, enjoying her videos a little too much.

But is it Maile's fault if men get off on watching a mother breastfeed her children? Yes, she does have very large (surgically-enhanced) breasts. But when it comes to nursing, they're just breasts — the location of the mammary glands responsible for the production of milk. Big, small, fake, real — the people whose opinions really matter don't give a shit what size or shape they are. They just want to be fed.

More: Breastfeeding mom is kicked out of TEDWomen — the irony is not lost on us

After YouTube removed Maile's monetary eligibility, she posted a no-holds-barred video with her response. Maile revealed that she chooses for the negative comments not to affect her, adding, "anything anybody says about me says nothing about me. Nobody knows me."

Spritual Tasha Mama

Spritual Tasha Mama

The vlogger, who is pregnant again with a baby girl, also thanked those who had left positive comments for their support, including thousands of women who have applauded her for inspiring them.

Here's a quick tip for anyone who doesn't approve of Maile's videos: Don't watch them. Nobody is putting a gun to your head and forcing you to look at her breastfeeding her sons. And if you watch the clips and see something pornographic in them, you're the one with the problem. She can't help being an attractive woman with large breasts.

There's no doubt that as a society, we are confronted with sexualised images of women everywhere we look, which goes some way to explaining why we're uncomfortable with women who look like sexual beings but act like mothers. But it's time to get over that. Breastfeeding is a normal part of being a mother, and nobody but the mom herself has the right to make the decision about how, when or for how long she nurses her kids. Maile's attempts to normalize breastfeeding and encourage body positivity should be celebrated, not denigrated.

How to carve a turkey the safe and elegant way

One of the most common reasons people end up at the ER on Thanksgiving day is for cuts -- for real. Make sure you're not one of those people. You want to be the proud cook who presents a platter of beautifully sliced turkey for everyone to enjoy. And we're here to help you through that.

We recommend using a good, sharp carving knife and a boning knife rather than an electric knife. This will give you more control and protect the texture of your meat better. Set that bird on a cutting board with wells to capture the juices you release while cutting.

Now... where do you get started? Here's your turkey carving plan.

To separate a joint, first cut the skin around it, then grasp the pieces firmly, and pull until you hear the joint pop. Then, using a carving knife, cut through just the tendons connecting the joint. You don't need to cut through bone to remove the legs and wings from a turkey.

Some people actually think Kanye's meltdown was planned for insurance money

There are actually jerks out there who think that Kanye West planned his breakdown for insurance money and to clean up his brand. Seriously?

More: Kim Kardashian West won't ditch Kanye West in his time of need

West has always been eccentric, but before he was hospitalized, he went so far off the rails, even his most dedicated fans were worried. He interrupted songs to go on long rants during his shows, abruptly ended a concert after only three songs and suddenly canceled his Saint Pablo Tour without warning. Soon after the announcement was made that the tour was over early, he was hospitalized amid rumors of paranoid delusions.

Now, Page Six reports that sources are saying West's breakdown was carefully planned to make sure he gets insurance money for his canceled tour.

"He had just canceled for no reason, no injury, no force majeure, so they were going to lose a bunch of money," an insider told the site. "Kanye is crazy, but not crazy enough to not get his insurance money. [He] knows what he is doing."

More: I care more about making a difference than what Kanye thinks about Trump

That same insider claimed that West's hospitalization was encouraged by Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian West to do a sort of reset on West's brand.

"He went too far off with the rants," the source said. "It was going to alienate his core fan base. There are real business people around him, including Kris Jenner and Kim Kardashian, who want the payday. They needed to preserve the brand this way."

Meanwhile, West remains hospitalized, and his wife was seen leaving his side for the first time on Thanksgiving. Sources close to the family say he's "starting to feel more like himself" and that he and his family "are taking it day by day. He understands that getting help at the hospital was necessary."

Ever fall in love with an author and wonder where he or she came up with those magical tales? More often than not, children’s authors mine their own lives for their fiction. Happily for kids and grown-ups alike, these eight famous children’s authors wrote down their own personal stories so we can get to know the people behind their art.

1. Beverly Cleary

A Girl from Yamhill

A Girl from Yamhill and My Own Two Feet

Fans of the woman behind Ramona Quimby and everybody else who walked down Klickitat Street will enjoy the clear-eyed yet humorous memoirs of the woman behind them. In A Girl From Yamhill, Cleary talks about growing up in Oregon during the Depression; My Own Two Feet is about her life as a young adult newlywed and librarian.

2. Chris Crutcher

King of the Mild Frontier: An Ill-Advised Autobiography (grades 8 – 12)

Crutcher has received both rewards and censorship for his young adult books, like Staying Fat for Sarah Byrnes, that frequently feature boys and young men dealing with serious issues like abuse, racial and religious prejudice, mental health issues and physical disability. He covers similar territory in his funny/painful memoir about life as an awkward youth with troubled parents.

3. Roald Dahl

Boy: Tales of Childhood
Image: Amazon

Boy: Tales of Childhood (grades 3 – 7) and Going Solo

It’s physically impossible for a human’s life to be as interesting and magical as the stories Dahl explored in The BFG, James and the Giant Peach or The Witches, but Dahl’s life comes pretty close. Boy covers Dahl’s young life in Norway and England with an eye for the cruel, disgusting and magical, while Going Solo is about his adventures in the Royal Air Force.

4. Peg Kehret

Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio

Small Steps: The Year I Got Polio (grades 3 – 8)

Kehret has published over 50 books for children, including adventure books like Escaping the Giant Wave and the thriller I'm Not Who You Think I Am. In the award-winning Small Steps, she talks about contracting polio at age 12 and having to learn to walk again.

5. Jean Little

Little By Little: A Writer’s Education

Little By Little: A Writer’s Education and Stars Come Out Within (both ages 10 and up)

Canadian author Jean Little’s children’s books often deal with themes like disability (as in Mine for Keeps and From Anna) or foster care (Home From Far and Willow and Twig). Her memoirs uncover the real-life inspiration for her books: in Little By Little, she talks about growing up vision-impaired while Stars Come Out Within explores her career as a teacher and author.

6. Gary Paulsen

Eastern Sun, Winter Moon: An Autobiographical Odyssey; Winterdance: The Fine Madness of Running the IditarodPilgrimage on a Steel Ride: A Memoir About Men and MotorcyclesMy Life in Dog Years (grades 3 – 7)

Paulsen may be most well-known for Hatchet, the adventure tale of a boy marooned on a remote island after a plane crash. His real life has been full of adventure as well, which readers can share in various forms. Eastern Sun focuses on his tumultuous post-World War II childhood; Winterdance covers his foibles entering the Iditarod dogsled race despite a serious lack of qualifications; Pilgrimage is a humorous account of a motorcycle ride from Alaska to New Mexico; My Life in Dog Years is a memoir for young readers, which tells his life story with each chapter dedicated to a dog he knew and/or loved.

7. Bill Peet

Bill Peet (grades 3 and up)

The man who drew Disney’s Dumbo and who gave life to beloved characters like Chester the Worldly Pig gorgeously illustrates his own dreamy boyhood, life during the Depression and fascinating career working for Walt Disney — not just the company, but Disney himself.

8. Antoine de Saint-Exupéry

Wind, Sand and Stars

Wind, Sand and Stars

Like Roald Dahl in Going Solo, de Saint-Exupéry, French author of The Little Prince, also published memoirs of his life as a pilot. In Wind, Sand and Stars he provides sketches of his adventures in the sky, as well as an eerie foretelling of his fate: The author disappeared in North Africa in 1943 while doing reconnaissance on German troop movements for the Allies.

I may be an American citizen, but I will never be able to shake my immigrant label

$

0

When did the word immigrant become synonymous with one kind of immigrant? When did the word immigrant immediately imply radical Islamic terrorist? Why, when America has long been defined as a melting pot, is it now trying to rebrand: "Make American great again."

More: Just because I'm proudly Jewish doesn't mean I don't love Christmas songs

Our country was "founded" by immigrants and we have become interwoven into the fabric of America. It's preposterous to discount the significance. The U.S.A. is only 238 years old. As a basis for comparison, for the religious, the bible is noted to be between 1,900 and 3,400 years old. Do the math – the most anyone can claim is nine generations in America.

I've identified myself as an immigrant for the last 37 years, ever since I stepped onto New York City from the former Soviet Union in March of 1979. My earliest memory is the plane ride to JFK, with the blue water in the toilet and the salty bag of peanuts, and somehow this flashback flushed any other memories of my birth land out of my mind. Now, as a mother to a six year old and 14 year old, I'm constantly surprised by how much or how little they remember from age five. They remember specific details from birthday parties or vacations, yet I recall hardly anything before the blue swirly water in the toilet 25,000 feet above the Atlantic Ocean.

Speaking Russian has gone in and out of style. I was grateful the 1980s, Perestroika made it cool to be Russian and to wear Cyrillic letters on my t-shirts. Now Putin came along and made Russians the bad guys again, and I have to say how I'm technically Ukrainian, but not really because it was Russia back then and I don't speak Ukrainian.

I thought I was a generation away from the immigrant stamp defining who I was, but you can never shed that mark. It's like the immunization scar I have on my upper right arm which gives it away. I'm not a "real American" since I wasn't born here. I could never be president because I wasn't born here. I don't have an American birth certificate, I have citizenship papers, which my parents obtained five years to the day, from the day we stepped off the plane.

We went to the place where you get official, took a number, and waited in folding chairs for hours to be called. We stepped up to a teller window and I was way too small to see anything. There was a problem because I didn't have an official birth certificate, only a bronze coin with Lenin on it, and my name. There was no proof of who I was other than my mother's word, the coin, and some medical documents. It was somehow good enough and I was granted the ability to pay taxes for the rest of my days!

More: My terrible morning sickness still ruins my appetite six years later

I know both my parents voted for Trump and I voted for Hillary, and I felt like I was in a time warp, speaking to people who were once prisoners of war. It was as if they were magnetically pulled towards a dictator-like leader – for them, he was actually nostalgic! They were comforted by a government of exclusion. "I don't understand," I would say. "He hates immigrants. If he was the leader in this country, we would never be here. How could you support that? "

I know the answer before I finish asking the question. I know they voted for him for the same reason millions of Americans did – they were terrified. Ultimately they were scared of terrorism and somehow the word immigrant became synonymous with terrorist. What I found most shocking was how thousands of contemporary Soviet immigrants were huge Trump supporters. When I asked any of them how they can support someone who wanted to close the borders, someone who would not have been here if he was in office, they all answer, "The Soviet Jews weren't blowing up nightclubs." My parents are educated people who fled their home country in pursuit of democracy and freedom, and now they want to close the borders. It's hypocrisy with a capital H and I can't seem to find any resolution for it.

I feel lucky to be a white woman today. I didn't have to wake up the day after the election and face the possibility my way of life may be threatened. I studied the Holocaust for years in high school and college and have thought about what I would do, and I always thought I'd be the type to run, to hide, to pretend I wasn't a Jew. Some people have pointed out a rise in antisemitic crimes since the election and while it's abhorrent, I think to myself, "At least you can't tell I'm Jewish from the outside."

I'll never stop being an immigrant, but some days I wonder what it would take to stop being an American.

The adorable photos of Harry and a whole bunch of tiny turtles were taken at Lovers Beach on the Island of Nevis. Other volunteers joined Harry on the beach to help out the tiny reptiles.

The Nevis Turtle Group’s Sea Turtle Conservation Program had nested the baby turtles before organizing the event to release them into the wild. The program is working to involve international volunteers and the local community to save the sea turtles, which are endangered.

The sea turtle event isn't the first time Harry has made headlines during his Caribbean visit. Earlier this week, he was teased at a public event by the prime minister of Antigua, Gaston Browne, who invited the prince to spend his honeymoon in the Caribbean if things work out with his new girlfriend, Canadian actress Meghan Markle. The awkward moment happened in front of 300 guests, and Harry was visibly uncomfortable when he heard the joke.

Harry's visit to the Caribbean, which began Sunday in Antigua, marks the 35th anniversary of independence in Antigua and Barbudo, and the 50th anniversary of independence in Barbados and Guyana. By the end of the two-week trip, Harry will have visited Antigua and Barbuda, St. Kitts and Nevis, St. Lucia, St. Vincent and the Grenadines, Grenada, and Barbados and Guyana.

Michael Jackson's older two kids, Paris and Prince Jackson, know what really matters during the holidays.

Both of them took to social media this Thanksgiving to post adorably sweet tributes to each other and other members of their family.

18-year-old Paris actually started the celebration of thankfulness a little early, tweeting on Wednesday with a sweet photo of her and her grandmother, 86-year-old Katherine Jackson, cuddling on a couch.

"nothing more important than family," Paris captioned the sweet shot, and her cousin, TJ Jackson, got in on the family love, commenting, "I love this photo!!!"

The new dad also paid credit to Tuck, writing, "To my queen thank you for birthing my biggest blessing! I love you!"

Despite their past, Lady Gaga's not going to let haters belittle Kanye West

Kanye West and Lady Gaga have history, and by history we mean they weren't exactly best friends after their much-anticipated tour, Fame Kills, was suddenly canceled in 2009. But Gaga has clearly left the past behind her because she recently came to West's defense.

Gaga showed her support for West with a series of tweets on Wednesday Nov. 23, when she took to Twitter to slam those who have been mocking him over his recent hospitalization (he checked into the Ronald Reagan UCLA Medical Center on Monday, Nov. 21) for a health scare believed to have been caused by "exhaustion and sleep deprivation."

According to two experts, going along with the pretense that Santa Claus is real is damaging to our relationships with our kids. Specifically, the lie undermines a child's trust and is morally wrong, say psychologist Professor Christopher Boyle and social scientist Dr. Kathy McKay.

"If [parents] are capable of lying about something so special and magical, can they be relied upon to continue as the guardians of wisdom and truth?" they write in the journal The Lancet Psychiatry.

To make us feel even worse about our deceitful, immoral selves, they also suggest we may be perpetuating the Santa myth not for our children's happiness, but because we can't just cope with the realities of adulthood.

McKay, from the University of New England in Australia, cites the indisputable fact that grown ups like to watch movies like Harry Potter and Star Wars, and TV shows like Doctor Who to back up this theory.

Oh, and the old "Santa's watching" warning that we start relying on from, oh, mid-October to make our kids behave is basically child abuse. Boyle and McKay believe our kids find Santa's "naughty or nice" judgment of them "terrifying" — although we can't see the nice kids being too concerned about it, and would the naughty kids — being so naughty and all — really care either?

"The morality of making children believe in such myths has to be questioned," Boyle, from England's University of Essex, said. "All children will eventually find out they've been consistently lied to for years, and this might make them wonder what other lies they've been told."

Now, children have been lied to about Santa for hundreds of years. As well as the tooth fairy, fairies in general, and various other mythical, magical creatures who may feature in our children's imaginary lives. As far as we know, no child has ever reported Santa-related psychological harm, or attempted to sue their parents for failing to take responsibility for their Christmas gifts.

Do we trust our parents less when the Santa lie is revealed? Of course we don't. It's a lie that couldn't possibly be underpinned by better intentions. For most of us, by the time we find out the truth, we're mature enough to deal with it. Life is full of lies — white lies, big lies, good lies, bad lies — and betrayals and broken relationships. Some kids aren't lucky enough to have parents who want to bring the magic of Santa Claus into their lives, so let's not take him away from those who do. And let's not forget that lots of kids are smart enough to see through Santa long before their parents let him go — maybe that's because it can still be magical without being real.

How to host an epic fondue party because it's easy and we love melted food

Dear God: Please make sure I fon-don't make too many fondue puns in this article.

Have you had fondue before? Fondue parties used to be all the rage, but these days, outside of a sketchy buffet chocolate fountain or a trip to an expensive chain fondue restaurant (yeah, those exist) most people aren't eating fondue on the reg, which is too bad because there's little else as fun or delicious as dipping food in cheese, chocolate or bubbling oil — it's dinner and entertainment all rolled up in one.

So let's revive the fondue party. It's simpler than it may seem, and is the antidote to stilted dinner party conversation. With this guide, you fon-won't believe you fon-didn't try throwing a fondue party sooner (I mean, I had to use at least a couple of fondue puns).

More: Friends' night fondue

1. Choose your cheese (or oil or chocolate)

Cheese: Cheese fondue requires a little more work than just melting cheese — but not much. An inexpensive white wine, a combo of shredded Emmentaler and Gruyère cheese tossed with cornstarch, and some low and slow heat are all you need to make the classic fondue. Check out Serious Eats' foolproof cheese fondue recipe.

Oil: Oil fondue involves actually cooking your food in hot oil. Oil is heated until very hot, then slivers or cubes of meat are dipped in and cooked in seconds. You can serve the meat with different dipping sauces once the meat is cooked. Naturally, Emeril Lagasse has an oil fondue recipe.

Chocolate: Chocolate fondue is perfect for special occasions, and you don't need to invest in one of those fountains to enjoy it. Simply melt chocolate, heavy cream and a pinch of salt together and start dipping — start with this easy recipe.

2. To slow cook or to simmer?

What's the best way to cook your fondue? There are a few different ways, each with their own pros and cons.

Stovetop: On the stovetop, you can cook cheese, chocolate and oil fondue.

For cheese and chocolate fondue, use a double boiler. This will ensure even and gentle heating, which will prevent cheese fondue from separating or scorching and prevent chocolate fondue from burning or seizing up.

Oil fondue can be made in a sturdy, thick pot simply by heating the oil to about 375 degrees F.

Slow cooker: The slow cooker works well for cooking and serving chocolate fondue and for serving cheese fondue. For slow cooker chocolate fondue, add your ingredients to the slow cooker, then cover and cook on high for a half hour. Whisk the ingredients to combine, set the slow cooker to low heat or the warm setting, and get dipping.

The slow cooker works well for serving cheese fondue, especially if it has a warm setting (the low setting on some models can still be too hot for proper cheese fondue, leading it to separate or burn). Simply cook your cheese fondue on the stovetop, then transfer it to the pre-warmed slow cooker for serving.

Candle or Sterno: Using a fondue pot suspended over a candle or can of Sterno is the perfect way to serve cheese and chocolate fondue. They provide a gentle heat that keeps the fondue melted, but not overly hot, so you can enjoy dipping into your cheese or chocolate without worrying about lumps or scorching. You can probably find a classic fondue pot for this method at your local thrift store.

Electric fondue pot: If you are truly committed to living that #fonduelife, you might consider investing in an electric fondue pot. This model does it all — it can both cook and serve cheese, chocolate and oil fondues.

3. Choose your dippers

What to dip? Anything your little heart desires.

For cheese fondue, try cubed bread (stale is traditional), blanched veggies and cooked meats.

For chocolate fondue, try dipping fruits, cubes of cake and marshmallows.

For oil fondue, try dunking thin strips or small cubes of beef, chicken, pork or shrimp served with dipping sauces. Horseradish cream, béarnaise and aioli are traditional, but try mixing things up with Vietnamese nam pla prik, Korean ssamjang or homemade Buffalo sauce, all of which taste delicious with fried meat.

You can use specially made fondue forks for spearing your ingredients, but plain skewers work well too.

4. Serve it with sides

If everyone at your party just eats a bunch of cheese-covered bread or deep-fried meat, they're going to feel sick by the end of the night. Serve your fondue alongside some lighter dishes — a cool, refreshing salad, an ancient grain pilaf, some simply prepared veggies and lots of iced water are the perfect way to help balance out the indulgence.

5. Have fun!

The best part of eating fondue? Other than the deliciousness, there is a whole bevy of rules to follow, which are more like games you play, to make fondue night feel like a party every time.

There are fondue "punishments" you can decide upon ahead of time. Every time the food someone is dipping drops into the pot, they have to do something. Whether they have to kiss the person on their left, sing a song, answer any question or do a dare, there are fun rules for any and every fondue party that make the experience about so much more than just eating.
