Canceled: Is TV doing it wrong?

$
0
0
It seems like television execs and writers are missing key areas of interest. Or at least interpreting them wrong.

Canceled shows

A surprising number of shows have been canceled recently and we're in the thick of pilot order announcements for next year. Are the new shows bound to be axed as well? It's time for something new to spice things up a little and execs are reading the trends all wrong.

Cast of Bonanza

Take for instance the recent viewership of History's Hatfields and McCoys. The series earned an average of 14.3 million viewers over the three days it aired. History and NBC have taken that knowledge and created two new Hatfield and McCoy shows. One is a modern-day take on the family feud and the other is a reality show looking at where the families are now. But did more than 14 million people really tune in because they were interested in the story of two families? Or were they lured in by the cowboy hats, guns and muddy faces? Exploring more Hatfield and McCoy-centered shows isn't what networks should be doing. With the past success of movies like Brokeback Mountain and True Grit, perhaps where networks need to spend their money is on Westerns. Americans are still in love with cowboys and the television market remains virtually untapped. Bring back Bonanza!

Period dramas in general are actually a really good idea. The Americans, set during the Cold War, is off to a decent start and Downton Abbey has become quite the sensation. The CW has ordered a pilot for Reign, about Mary Queen of Scots, and we're super-stoked. We love fluffy dresses, so exploring some Austen might be fun , or, since we love violence, how about something set during the Irish Civil War? Of course, a look back at America during Vietnam and the rise of hippies might make for excellent commentary on our current situation.

Mars looks a lot like Arizona
Mars Rover on the surface of Mars. Or is this just Phoenix? We could totally live on Mars!

Also, maybe it's geeky, but it's time to return to space. Historically, space-related shows have always done quite well. Star Trek went strong for ages and the movies raked in millions. Or Firefly! The show only lasted one season and yet continues to have a huge cult following. Doctor Who is, without a doubt, the show that saved BBC America. It's the perfect example of the kind of accessible space show networks need to create. Nothing too out there, but something for all those people who wish we were still sending men to the moon. Maybe a show set a couple decades from now about a human colony on Mars or a drama that takes a look back at life as an astronaut?

Finally, networks also need to give up on the family comedies. They're just not panning out. Moms and dads are watching CSI and other crime dramas and their kids are watching Disney and Nick. It's people in their teens, 20s and 30s that are still more open-minded about their viewing choices and they don't care about how difficult it is to be parents to a teenager. They're crushing on shows about people their own age, people living lives they'd love to live . Happy Endings, New Girl and Girls are popular for a reason: They're relatable.

It's not that we don't love what's on television right now. We're TV-obsessed, which is why we're here. But, we think it's capable of so much more than the constant rotation of duds. As some of our favorite shows draw to a close, we're ready for new characters to grow attached to and watch for many seasons to come. Also, we'd like a little less blood and guts.

What do you think, TV fans? What do you want to see coming into your living room?

We live in a world where children are increasingly exposed to hatred and intolerance of cultural diversity, so it's up to us as parents to teach kids about the value of the acceptance of others. Before you lose your youngsters to prejudice, discover 10 children's books that teach diversity.

One Green Apple

One Green Apple

Facing the challenges of being a new kid in a new country with a new language, Farah finds comfort in the similarities she finds on a field trip to an apple orchard. As the class works together to make apple cider, the young Muslim immigrant begins to connect with her classmates when she realizes it takes many types of apples to make the sweet beverage. One Green Appleby Eve Bunting is aimed at kids ages 4 and up.

Two Mrs. Gibsons

Two Mrs. Gibsons

In a world where biracial children are becoming the majority, this touching children's book celebrates cultural diversity by highlighting a little girl's relationships with her Japanese mother and her African-American grandmother. While the story teaches kids about diversity, it is the lesson that the strengths come in those differences, especially within your own family, that shines through. Two Mrs. Gibsons by Toyomi Igus is suitable for children ages 6 and up.

Little Blue and Little Yellow

Little blue and little yellow

Originally written during a time when races were often separated, two little dots of colors form a friendship represented by the color green that was not accepted by all, namely their own parents. However, the message of tolerance and acceptance of cultural diversity is delivered through the blending of the colors by the parents themselves in the end. Little Blue and Little Yellow by Leo Lionni is a terrific book for children in preschool and beyond.

Jack & Jim

Jack & Jim

With messages of tolerance and the beauty of diversity weaved into the tales of two birds from different parts of the world, children will grasp the easy-to-understand messages illustrated in the watercolor artwork of Kitty Crowther. Children will learn that the birds' friendship is based on what's beyond their feathers — what's inside their hearts.Jack & Jim by Kitty Crowther is perfect for little ones ages for 4-8.

The Big Orange Splot

The Big Orange Splot

The message of individuality and self-actualization is easily delivered when Mr. Plumbeans's house is splashed with orange paint. Although the choice he makes to paint his house in multicolored hues is in response to the intolerance of his neighbors, the lesson to accept people as they are is received loud and clear to toddlers and grade schoolers alike. The Big Orange Splot by Daniel Manus Pinkwater is geared toward children ages 4 and up.

Alphabet Kids book series

Oni's Good Hair Day

This multicultural series of books features kids of all different ethnicities who experience intolerance but grow thorough the discovery of their own customs, strengths and appreciation of others' differences. These affordable reads help promote tolerance and understanding of cultural diversity through situations with which kids can identify. The Alphabet Kids book series is geared toward kids ages 2-7.

The Sneetches

The Sneetches

Unlike many of the Dr. Seuss books you know, this children's book contains a number of short stories that weave a message of tolerance and teaches kids about diversity. Through the Sneetches, Zax and two other stories, the lesson that friendship is more important than differences is delivered through Dr. Seuss's lovable way. The Sneetches and Other Stories by Dr. Seuss is great for kids ages 5 and up.

The Sandwich Swap

The Sandwich Swap

When a small disagreement over a hummus sandwich causes two best friends to divide, the story spreads across the school and transforms into intolerance. In an effort to mend fences, the principal helps the girls to celebrate their differences while giving the student body a lesson in the beauty of cultural diversity. The Sandwich Swap by Queen Rania of Jordan Al Abdullah and Kelly DiPucchio is a wonderful choice for kids ages 3 and up.

Children Just Like Me

Children Just Like Me

Based on interviews with youngsters from all around the world, this children's book celebrates the beauty of cultural diversity while linking the worldwide similarities children of all walks of life share. Filled with photos and information on children of every continent in more than 140 countries, young readers will learn the foods, living conditions and fun in communities that are more similar to their own than they may first think. Children Just Like Me: A Unique Celebration of Children Around the World by Anabel Kindersley and Barnabas Kindersley was created in collaboration with UNICEF and is ideal for kids grades 3-6.

The Colors of Us

The Colors of Us

Through a little girl's quest to paint a picture of herself, Lena and her mother take a walk through their neighborhood to understand that skin color comes in all sorts of shades. As Lena and her mother compare each person's skin color to food such as honey, cinnamon and more, diversity is put in a perspective even small children can grasp. The Colors of Us by Karen Katz is terrific for children ages 4 and up.

Every since the movie Ratatouille came out, people have been in love with this simple French side dish.

Ratatouille Pasta

Ratatouille is typically served as a side, however in this recipe it is being used as a pasta sauce. It is wonderful on its own, but it makes one of the best vegetarian pasta sauces you will ever taste! To really make it spectacular stir in fresh mozzarella and Parmesan cheese just before serving.

Ratatouille pasta recipe

Recipe adapted from Chef Michael Smith

Serves 4-6

Ingredients:

  • Grapeseed oil
  • 1 eggplant, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  • 2 zucchinis, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  • 1 red bell pepper, cored and seeds removed, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  • 1 yellow bell pepper, cored and seeded, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  • 1 onion, finely chopped
  • 2 cloves garlic, crushed
  • 4 ripe tomatoes, seeded, cut into 1/2-inch dice
  • A bay leaf
  • Sea salt and freshly ground pepper, to taste
  • 1 or 2 bunches fresh basil, chopped
  • 1 tablespoon balsamic vinegar
  • 1 pound box of fettucine noodles
  • 1/2 cup Parmesan cheese, grated
  • 3/4 cup fresh buffalo mozzarella, cut into 1/2-inch dice

Directions:

  1. Begin by sauteing the eggplant and zucchini in a large skillet over high heat with 2-3 tablespoons of grapeseed oil. Continue cooking, stirring and tossing, until the vegetables are golden brown and tender, 10 minutes or so. Set these vegetables aside in a bowl.
  2. Turn the heat down a bit and continue with another 2-3 tablespoons of grapeseed oil and the bell peppers, cooking them just until they’re tender, another 5 minutes or so. Add them to the first batch of reserved vegetables.
  3. Next, saute the onions with another 2-3 tablespoons of grapeseed oil until they soften a bit. Add the crushed garlic and tomatoes and continue for 7 minutes.
  4. Lower the heat. Add the bay leaf and reserved vegetables and simmer until the mixture thickens, another 10 minutes or so. Remove the crushed garlic cloves.
  5. While the ratatouille simmers, cook the pasta in salted water, until al dente. Set the pasta aside.
  6. Season the ratatouille with salt and pepper. Stir in the fresh basil and balsamic vinegar.
  7. Toss the ratatouille, Parmesan cheese and fresh mozzarella into the cooked fettucini noodles. Serve immediately.

Dan Marino admits to fathering child with mistress

$

The former Miami Dolphins quarterback has long been a fan favorite, but it turns out he has more than the six kids we all knew about.

Dan Marino

Dan Marino has always been seen as a public figure who could do no wrong. But it looks like he did do wrong and did a good job at keeping it a secret.

The 51-year-old athlete says he is happily married to his wife, Claire — the couple even have six children together. But he admitted this week to fathering a child with another woman less than eight years ago.

"They had an affair, and she had a baby," a source told the New York Post. "Everything was on the down-low and secretive."

That woman was Donna Savattere, a production assistant with CBS Sports in Manhattan. At the time of their daughter's birth, Savattere was 35 years old. Marino has been a pre-game analyst with the network since 2003, which is presumably how the two met.

But unlike couples in some other recent cheating scandals, Marino and his wife are as strong as ever, or so Marino insists.

"This is a personal and private matter," he told the NY Post in a statement. "I take full responsibility both personally and financially for my actions now as I did then. We mutually agreed to keep our arrangement private to protect all parties involved."

He sent the statement on his 28th wedding anniversary.

"My wife and I have been married for almost 30 years and have six children together," he said. "And we continue to be a strong and loving family."

The newspaper's source added that he has tried to be a father to the child, even while keeping his parentage a secret.

"They would have impromptu meetings, which was part of the deal," the source said. "Donna was always saying she had to go meet with her lawyers to go over the scheduling and other issues."

As we have seen with other couples, cheating is one thing, but a cheating scandal can be all it takes to end a marriage. For now, though, it looks like the Marinos will be staying together.

Video of Cameron Russell's TED talk is making the rounds of the web at record pace, thanks to the many who are curious to hear a Victoria's Secret model spill insider secrets. Watch below!

Cameron Russell

From the moment Cameron Russell took the stage at a recent TED conference, the audience was in for something new.

After performing the series' very first on-stage outfit change, the 25-year-old veteran of the modeling industry got to truth telling.

"I am standing on this stage because I am a pretty white woman, and in my industry, we call that a 'sexy girl.' I am going to answer some of the questions people ask me, but with an honest twist," Cameron Russell shared.

Victoria's Secret Fashion Show: The weighty Angel woes>>

Explaining what it takes to make it to the top of the modeling world, she went on, "The real way I became a model is I won a genetic lottery and I became the recipient of a legacy. Saying you want to be a model when you grow up is akin to saying you want to win the Powerball when you grow up. It's awesome, and it's out of your control and it's not a career path."

While showing photos of herself in real life compared to those polished for campaigns, Cameron Russell explained, "These pictures are not pictures of me. They're constructions. They're constructions by professionals — hairstylists, makeup artists, photographers, stylists and all of their assistants and pre-production and post-production, and they build this. That's not me."

Victoria's Secret Swim 2013 cover model is Candice Swanepoel>>

"I am insecure," the 5-foot-10-inch beauty went on to confess, adding that she's far from alone.

"Because I have to think about what I look like every day. If you ever are wondering, 'If I have thinner thighs and shinier hair, will I be happier?' you just need to meet a group of models, because they have the thinnest thighs and the shiniest hair and the coolest clothes, and they're the most physically insecure women on the planet."

Bruce Willis celebrates 25 years of Die Hard

Can you believe it's been 25 years since the first Die Hard hit theaters? The film that made Bruce Willis a star is getting the royal treatment. 20th Century Fox recently turned one of its sound stages into a 35-foot-tall mural.

Die Hard mural

It's no secret that Bruce Willis got his big break in television. Starting in 1985, he appeared on the prime-time series Moonlighting. For five seasons, he played David Addison Jr. opposite Cybill Shepherd's Maddie Hayes.

Even though he gained a sizable fan base, nothing could prepare Willis for his leap to the big screen. In 1988, he headlined a little action film called Die Hard. It was a blockbuster that shot him into superstardom. He became an action icon thanks to his role as John McClane.

It's been 25 years, and McClane's still at it. On Valentine's Day, Fox will release Die Hard's latest sequel, called A Good Day to Die Hard. The Hollywood Reporter was at the studio lot where the cast celebrated the milestone.

Willis briefly spoke while standing in front of a veiled mural featuring an image of his famous character.

"This is really nice," Willis said. "I started on Stage 20 at Fox. I'm so honored. Thank you so much."

Trailer: A Good Day to Die Hard is a family affair>>

Fox Filmed Entertainment chair Jim Gianopulos presented the actor with the first look at the Die Hard mural. It's a film that joins The Sound of Music and Star Wars among the studio's most notable titles.

With the help of some fanfare and explosives, the sheet was dropped and the mural unveiled. It depicts the famous scene in Die Hard in which McClane is crawling though an air shaft with a lighter.

Die Hard 5 gets a release date: How romantic!>>

The final product was a collaboration between muralist Van Rainy Hecht-Nielsen and painter Fernando Cepeda.

A Good Day to Die Hard hits theaters Feb. 14.

3 Tastefully wicked anti-Valentine's Day party ideas

Party
like Cupid's been a jerk

Oh, goody. It's Valentine's Day. And just in time to add a little more sting to your fresh breakup. Check out these anti-Valentine's Day party ideas that are just wicked enough to help you get through the day.

If you're newly single, Valentine's Day can be a real bummer. We know you don't fault your coupled-up friends for finding Mr. Right , but we also know this: You don't need to spend the day sulking on the couch watching rom-coms and crying into a pint of chocolate chip cookie dough ice cream.

So throw an anti-Valentine's Day party to celebrate being single and loving it! There's just one ground rule. This party is about celebrating loving ourselves enough to know single is OK. No pity partiers allowed!

The "life-enhancement" party

Tip: Ask the party coordinator to bring plenty of contact cards. Some of your friends may be uncomfortable ordering this type of life enhancement in front of others.

This one's for the ladies only . Single or not, we all need a little… ahem… recreation now and again. As any hobby enthusiast will say, you need the right tools for the job. Instead of getting tipsy and lamenting about love gone wrong, or worse, pretending you think male strippers are a good idea, throw a pleasure party for you and your best single gal pals.

Other than the cost of the items you want to buy, the party itself is usually free. Just make sure you tell the party coordinator that the party is for singles only so she doesn't waste time talking about intimate products for couples.

You'll laugh, you'll learn and you'll love focusing on what you want.

Deck of cardsThe Texas M.A.S.H. 'em party

This adult variation on a popular tween game relies on the game of Texas Hold 'em, though any poker game will do. While our game can be modified for various categories, we suggest keeping it a bit spicy.

You'll need a large piece of poster board and pictures of various celebrities of the appropriate gender . You'll need enough pictures for each category for the number of guests on your list. For example, if you have five guests, you'll need five pictures under M, five under A, and so on. Make sure each celebrity's best "assets" are shown in their best light.

In our version, the acronym stands for Marry–Avoid –Shag–Hug. Tape the required number of celeb photos in each category. After each hand of Texas Hold 'em , each guest gets to choose from the categories in the order of highest hand to lowest.

Guests with jokers may choose to use the joker as a wild card and take their chances with another draw, or save it for a steal at the end of the game. In the end, each partygoer will have a brand new romantic history.

While St. Valentine was sainted for his commitment to love so strong he'd marry couples who were forbidden to take the vows, he met a rather grisly end when he was beheaded for his betrayal. Pay tribute to his commitment by throwing a Halloween-style costume party for singles only .

Skip the crazier Halloween decor extras and opt for a dimly lit local spot with raging music and flashing lights. There should be plenty of room for dancing, and it should be at a place that's not too loud, so you can mingle. You're more likely to meet the man of your dreams when you're celebrating being single, because he knows you're a girl who's awesome enough on her own.

Gals should wear their sexiest, sassiest or most adorable personas , while the men should be asked to don a costume that truly conveys their romantic personality. No zombies or blood, just a lot of people in fanciful costumes that make them look great.

Valentine's Day is what you make it

Valentine's Day is just another day of the year. Couples use it to do the things they should be doing all year long. Why should your night be any different?

Make a Valentine's Day gumdrop wreath

You can easily make a cute Valentine's Day wreath without much fuss. This gumdrop wreath is colorful and simple to make.

Valentine’s Day Gumdrop Wrea

Valentine's Day is just around the corner. Why not decorate a door or window with an easy-to-make Valentine's Day wreath that is super-sweet? Gumdrop candies add the color and fun to this project!

Valentine’s Day gumdrop wreath

Supplies:

  • 1 heart-shaped, soft foam wreath
  • 4 pounds of candy gumdrops
  • Round toothpicks , cut in half
  • 6-inch piece of thin wire shaped to hang the wreath
  • Clear packing tape
  • Scissors
  • Colorful ribbon to hang the completed wreath
  • Cloth or newspaper to place on your work surface
  • Wreath hanger for your door
  • Optional: Sewing thimble, clear acrylic spray paint

Supplies

Directions:

  1. Decide which colors of candy you'll use for the wreath and place them in a bowl near your work area.
  2. Hold each toothpick in one hand and cut it in half. You may want to wear protective glasses for this step. Lay the toothpick halves in one area of your workspace, near the candy.
  3. Stick the cut end of the toothpicks into the bottom of each gumdrop. You'll poke the pointy part of the toothpick into the wreath.
  4. Cut a 6-inch piece of wire and loop it around the top of the wreath. Tightly twist the top of it together. Use the clear tape to secure the wire to the wreath so it doesn't move around. You may need someone to help you with this step.
  5. Decide your color pattern/order . You’ll likely have four or five rows of candy in the wreath when finished. You do not need any for the bottom of the wreath.
  6. Lay the wreath flat on your work surface and press the gumdrops into the wreath, starting with one row at a time. You may want to wear a sewing thimble for this step to keep the toothpicks from popping up from the top of the candy and poking your finger.
  7. Make sure you place the gumdrops as close to each other as possible, and press them into the wreath so the bottom of the candy is flush with the foam wreath.
  8. Tie your ribbon in around the wire and form a nice bow so it covers the wire.
  9. If you'd like, spray the wreath with clear acrylic spray paint to help preserve it. Once it's dry, hang the wire loop onto the wreath hanger. Adjust the bow as needed.

Host a celeb-caliber party for the awards shows

Couple at fancy party

It's hard for any gal to be anything but jealous of the glitz and glamour of the folks on the red carpet. Whether you like the Oscars or the Grammys, we'll show you how to throw a party that would make Ms. Xtina herself clamor for an invite.

Why should the celebs have all the fun?

When you're planning your party, whether it's for the Oscars, Emmys or Grammys, the first rule to follow is this: Keep it classy. That's what sets these shows apart and makes us so eager to score an invitation. You want it to be a party the celebs would want to attend.

So skip the gimmicky extras. Having a fake paparazzi take everyone's photos as they enter would be fun at a kids party , but you want to feel like the celebs, who often sneak off to the best parties in secret.

Who are you wearing?

What's the fun of an Oscar party if you aren't dressed to impress? Asking your guests to don crazy-expensive gowns and tuxes is a bit much, unless you're throwing a fundraiser or charity event. But cocktail-wear is just dressy enough to keep the theme without going to extreme lengths.

Location, location, location

Some celebs host after-parties at sucasa. So there's definitely nothing wrong with that if you've got the room . But the best parties are held in snazzy joints people get to brag about just because they know where it is.

If you decide your home isn't the right place, contact a local hotel to find out about renting a room. Depending on your area, a nice enough space will probably cost you around $500, which can easily be split among the guests . Also, if you have guests from out of town , you may be able to get special room rates based on the rental.

If you're having your party at home, consider moving any furniture or decorative elements that would conflict with your party decorations or inhibit your guests' abilities to mingle easily.

Make sure the room is equipped with at least one TV  that can tune in to all the red carpet action on your favorite channel and the event itself. You'll also want to account for tables and chairs and anything else you'll need for the party.

BalloonCeleb-worthy decor

This is where you'll really want to pause. It's easy to get a bit cheesy with the decorations for your party. Think elegant bridal soiree sans the wedding flowers and favors, not homecoming. You can hire a party planner or caterer , but it's not that hard to DIY.

We recommend going with a one- or two-color theme and sticking with classic, elegant colors like white or black with gold or silver accents. But don't go overboard. A little goes a long way on Grammy night.

The appetizer or guest tables should all have matching tablecloths and a tasteful centerpiece. Try an inexpensive assortment of large, same-color candles of various heights atop round mirrors. You can decorate the candles with ribbons tied around the base if desired. If necessary, decorate the chairs with draped fabric and elegant satin bows.

Stick with real tableware . Plastic anything will downgrade your party instantaneously. As much as possible, serving plates and bowls should also match.

champagnePuck-worthy food and beverages

Wolfgang Puck is a world-renowned chef who's done food for more of these awards shows than we can list. While you may not be a master chef, you can still provide Puck-worthy appetizers and cocktails if you keep it simple.

For apps, stick with those that have only a few ingredients and are easy to eat . If it would be perfectly at home in your Super Bowl game-day spread, you don't need it.

For cocktails, stock a simple wet bar with common ingredients to make several popular drinks, plus one or two specialty theme drinks to make the night memorable. Choose an elegant cocktail that matches your theme for the evening. Have one bottle of wine for every two guests . A decent bottle can cost as little as $10, so don't go overboard, but steer clear of the box. Guests who want beer can BYOB , as it's difficult to please so many palates on a budget.

You could always hire your own caterer , of course, but perhaps you should check out these easy but elegant recipes from the writers at SheKnows before you make that call.

Be charitable

If celebs do anything right, it's making sure they give back. From Angelina Jolie to Bono, celebrities use their star power to give back to those in need. Host a party game in which guests "vote" for their favorite nominees by paying $1 per category. Keep the money in the charity jar all night — the guest who got the most winners right can choose the charity the money will benefit .

Gift bagSwag

At these types of events, celebs usually get goody bags filled with expensive freebies. While you probably can't afford the quadruple-digit value bags they give at the Emmys , you can probably find a few inexpensive pieces to really make the evening one to remember.

In a gift bag filled with tissue that matches your decor, place just a few items of appreciation. Celebs have commented on getting anything from the latest and greatest moisturizer to iPod goodies, so the sky's the limit, really. Many super stores have sample aisles where you can get anything from lotions to fragrances. Just keep them higher end and make sure they aren't things people probably already have in their medicine cabinet.

Fumble! Super Bowl halftime shows we'll never forget

$

Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson's "wardrobe malfunction" ranks right up there with some of the Super Bowl's most infamous midgame performances. As for the others topping our list? Not even a Hail Mary could save these halftime horrors.

Janet Jackson and Justin Timberlake

Super Bowl XXXVIII

'Twas the halftime show that spawned a new catchphrase in pop culture: "wardrobe malfunction." Who cares that Justin Timberlake and Janet Jackson were bringing the house down prior to Nipplegate? Once JT tore off a piece of Jackson's top for a little bit of peek-a-booby, we couldn't remember our names — much less what the h*ll they were singing before that point. The Federal Communications Commission had a major hissy fit over the whole debacle, leading to an industrywide crackdown and increased censorship.

Super Bowl XXV

When a halftime show is titled "A Small World Salute to 25 Years of the Super Bowl" and is produced by Disney, it's a safe assumption it might not cater to the football-lovin' crowd. And who was performing in conjunction with the 3,500 children? New Kids on the Block, naturally. The result was like the Small World ride at Disney gone horribly awry — a dizzying mix of spinning adolescents and bubble gum singles like "Step by Step." To top it off, the performance was bumped until the end of the game in favor of a special ABC news report about the Gulf War.

Superbowl XLV

When the powers that be hired The Black Eyed Peas to perform the halftime show for Super Bowl XLV in 2011, the Peas looked good on paper — they were at the pinnacle of their popularity, churning out hits like "I Got a Feeling" and "Boom Boom Pow" left and right. When it came time to pony up for their big performance, though, the Peas failed to deliver. Between the strange, glow-in-the-dark ensembles and Fergie singing like a drag queen doing an impersonation of Fergie, this space-age act had football fans wishing it would hop in a Delorean and go back to the future.

Super Bowl XXVI

Let's get this straight: During the planning of Super Bowl XXVI, someone thought, "Hmm, let's pair the 'Queen of Latin Pop' with two figure skaters and throw in a bunch of ballroom dancers and giant snowmen for good measure. Now that's a halftime show!"

Uh, yeah. Not so much. Gloria Estefan, Dorothy Hamill and Brian Boitano's Christmas-themed extravaganza left the fans in the stands scratching their heads and had everyone yearning for the return of testosterone. This is football, after all — not the ever-lovin' Ice Capades.

Cody Simpson: "I feel very blessed"

$

Australian music sensation, Cody Simpson, makes an appearance on the Feb. 4 edition of NBC's The Biggest Loser. He shares his own stories of being bullied in the internet age.

Cody Simpson

Cody Simpson, age 16, has been taking the teen music world by storm over the last few years, not only in his native Australia but also here in the U.S. Now, he's set to inspire one of the young contestants on Season 14 of The Biggest Loserwith a Feb. 4 appearance on the show. SheKnows was able to speak with Simpson about his appearance and where he's headed in the music world.

It has to be be tough still being a kid in the public eye and acting as a role model at the same time, but the singer seems to take it all in stride.

He told SheKnows, "When I started to realize I had some kind of voice, an influence amongst young people, I really wanted to take that and use it positively."

He continued, "I feel very blessed and want to give back as much as I can to kids my age."

In his appearance on Monday on the inspiring weight loss show, Simpson joins up with contestant Lindsay Bravo, one of this season's kid ambassadors. Not only is the 13-year-old working to improve her health after a five-year struggle with weight gain, she is also tackling the theme of the week, "Leading by Example." While Bravo works on an anti-bullying speech for her peers, Simpson steps in to share his own story of being teased.

When asked if it was hard to reveal his own challenges, he said, "Yeah, but I try to be pretty open about it, too, because literally every day online I get hate [from people]. It's pretty hard to avoid."

That's a tough thing to hear from someone so young, but it's an unfortunate part of being in the limelight in the internet age. Simpson felt it was important to support Bravo and her quest for overall health in her life by talking about his own struggles.

Since the reality show is all about fitness and good nutrition, the teen star knows he needs to keep fit while out on tour. He tries to stay as active as he can with workouts in the gym and has a trainer who comes out on the road with him.

However, he spoke like a true 16-year-old when he shared, "My mom's always making sure I'm not just eating a bunch of junk."

Simpson just completed a U.S. leg of Justin Bieber's Believe tour, and now the duo are off to Europe for a couple of months. Even though he's performing with the Biebs, the Aussie is really trying to make his own mark on the music world.

Simpson said, "We're in a similar category of artists, so I try to be as unique as I can."

If you think the two teen stars are constantly talking the music biz, think again. When they hang out, it's "less about music and more about chilling."

Simpson's first studio album, Paradise, came out in October, and he's already in the studio working on the follow-up. He's definitely finding that his sound is growing up with him, so expect a more mature album when it is released.

It's not all work for the teen though. If Simpson isn't in the studio, most likely you will find this surf enthusiast "down at the ocean," which is his own personal paradise away from his music career.

So, what's next for the accomplished pop star? He couldn't have given SheKnows a better answer:

"I want to a better artist and a better person. There's always room for improvement."

Do you think Ben Affleck will win again for Argo?

Congratulations! Christina Ricci is engaged!

Lucky Christina Ricci! It looks like her newest beaut liked her finger enough to put a ring on it!

Christina Ricci

Our little big-eyed stunner, Wednesday AddamsChristina Ricci has finally admitted she's engaged!

Despite the fact that Ricci has been rocking that three-rock ring since October, the actress has remained mum about the situation. Until this weekend, that is, when she fessed up to Us Weekly.

"Yeah," the Pan Am beauty told Us Weekly."[We got engaged] a couple months back."

Ricci was previously engaged to actor Owen Benjamin, but the two split in 2009. Then, while on the set of Pan Am, Ricci met the gorgeous James Heerdegen, who works as a dolly grip. He's worked on tons of movies, including Sex and the City, Friends with Benefits and Revolutionary Road. Though we think he's cute enough to be an actor, too, if he wanted. The two have been dating since last February.

So does the newly engaged actress have any big plans for the upcoming Valentine's Day? Not really.

"Honestly, I was trying to think of that before, I can't remember a single Valentine's Day!" she admitted Us Weekly. "I personally just don't think I've ever made a big deal about Valentine's Day. I mean. I like to get like flowers."

Hopefully her future hubby has some romantic ideas in store. After all, it's their first V-Day as an engaged couple!

Ricci didn't share any wedding date details with the magazine, so we'll have to keep you posted on that. She's taking life a little slower these days, though, and it seems like her schedule isn't quite as cramped. Her next movie, Smurfs 2, doesn't open until the summer. So she has plenty of time to plan something just right for her and James.

Good luck, love birds!

Amanda Bynes: Once sexy Maxim cover girl faced eviction

$

Once America's sweetheart, Amanda Bynes literally stripped off her good-girl image with a racy Maxim cover shoot. Now Bynes had to leave her NYC home — or face eviction.

Amanda Byes at her Maxim cover party.

It's hard to believe that just a few years ago, Amanda Bynes posed for the cover of Maxim. Now, Bynes had to leave her apartment — or else. Her landlord told the fallen teenage star to get out of her New York City apartment ASAP because she's ruining the building's atmosphere — and breaking lots of management's rules — seemingly without care.

TMZ reported that Bynes received a letter from her landlord earlier this month explicitly threatening Bynes with eviction if Amanda didn't leave on her own. On Friday, moving trucks were spotted outside her building. Guess she got message.

No surprise: This red-headed mess was recently evicted>>

The details surrounding Amanda Bynes' almost-eviction involved drugs and noise. TMZ's source says the letter explained that Bynes' lease would be terminated because she was a "building nuisance" and that her penchant for smoking marijuana "morning, noon, and night" was simply too much for the residents and the nonsmoking building.

Amanda Bynes: Popped for DUI>>

Amanda Bynes faced several legal issues over 2012, notably a DUI charge in April, despite the actress' claim she neither drinks alcohol nor parties.

She told US Weekly back in 2007, "I don't like to drink. I have definitely stayed out of the party scene. I've been offered to go to those parties, but I feel like I would be the one who would die if I did something." Bynes added, "I don't know how they think they're going to live forever."

Amanda Bynes' BMW is disgustingly dirty>>

Hmm, by 2010, perhaps Bynes had decided to change her ways. She started off the year with a racy Maxim photo spread and a decision to branch into more adult movie roles.

Said Bynes to Maxim, "I want to show people who I am. My parents were like, 'Does this mean you're going to do sexy movies now?' I said, 'Well, if they're done the right way, then maybe! I mean I'm not going to do porn, but if it's a Leonardo DiCaprio movie or whatever..."

Bynes later said on her sexy spread, "Point is, it's time for me to start making my own decisions."

Maybe Bynes' Maxim cover foreshadowed her eviction?

General Hospital losing 3 cast members?

Your favorite OLTL transplants may be heading home.

Michael Easton and Kristen AldersonAccording to our sister site, Soaps.com, General Hospital is on call for another big casting shake-up. We're all still in mourning over Jason's departure, and now it sounds like Todd Manning, Starr Manning and John McBain may be headed back home, too. Michael Easton is even talking about the kerfuffle on his Facebook page.

What's the problem? It turns out Prospect Park owns the rights to the characters of Todd, Starr and John. Now that One Life to Live is gaining a second life on the internet, it wants the characters back. It doesn't sound like Easton, Kristen Alderson or Roger Howarth are required back to set if they're that unhappy with the thought of going, but the show will still require their characters. And it's not as if McBain can exist in two worlds, right?

As everyone continues to get up in arms over exactly what to do about the situation, Prospect Park released the following statement:

Prospect Park understands that 'General Hospital' has featured Llanview transplants Michael Easton and Kristen Alderson among others while we arranged production of the new version of 'One Life to Live.' These characters, who we own under our agreement, are obviously essential to our production efforts, and a large reason we licensed the program. We also understand that legions of 'General Hospital' fans have grown to love these actors and characters in a short time. So even though we are paying ABC millions of dollars to license the shows, we have been, and continue to be willing to equally share the characters with 'General Hospital' and ABC. It’s a win-win for the actors, the shows and fans, who love all of the shows and storylines. We hope to work out these agreements with ABC and the actors.

Roger Howarth

In other words, General Hospital knew all along that Starr, Todd, and McBain's appearance was probably only temporary. The show probably shouldn't have created such long-term places for them among the General Hospital regulars. Prospect Park also seems entirely willing to work out a schedule so the actors can do both, which seems admirable.

Then again, the current storyline for GH has brought the old Port Charles vampire storyline back into play with McBain's character. Is it possible they'll transform Easton into his own PC vampire character and let OLTL find someone new to play McBain on their internet revival? As much as we love Easton, Port Charles didn't survive for a reason: Vampires are so over. Unless the writers can turn him into a zombie, the vampire storyline may help them keep Easton but lose fans.
