Prince Jackson is far from done grieving over his father's death

0
0

It's been seven years, but Prince Jackson is still not really over his dad's sudden death.

More: What the heck? We can't believe people still think Michael Jackson is alive

"I don’t think it’s anything you ever get over," 19-year-old Prince said in a new interview with the Los Angeles Times. "It’s always going to be a part of your life that’s missing."

Prince, along with his sister, Paris, and younger brother, Blanket, have lived with their grandmother, Katherine Jackson, at one of the family's estates ever since their father's passing. Michael Jackson died in the summer of 2009 from an overdose of a drug prescribed to him by his doctor.

The Jackson kids have had to learn to cope publicly since Michael died, and for Prince, that meant throwing himself into hobbies. He took up Brazilian jiujitsu, and when he started college, he took a class on grief.

"The way I cope with it is incorporating him into my life in every way — from my company logo having little bits of him [to] using his metaphors and trying to follow everything he taught us," Prince said. "My brother and my sister, we’ve all coped differently. I’ve gotten better the older I get."

Paris Jackson has famously received backlash for one of the ways she's coped with her father's death: tattoos. She has a number of tattoos that are dedicated to Michael, despite some fans' disapproval.

And while Paris has maintained a relationship with her and Prince's birth mother, Debbie Rowe, Prince has not. He says that's just better for him.

"I’m very lucky to have two mother figures in my life, my grandmother and my cousin Frances," he explained. "As for my birth mother, she’s always been more of a friend, and that works for us."

Hold on, did TBBT's Kunal Nayyar just diss Chris Hemsworth & his abs?

Dreamworks' Trolls is finally out today, and we have a hilarious video to celebrate.

More: SAG Awards' diversity still wasn't diverse enough

The Big Bang Theory's Kunal Nayyar lends his voice to the film's character Guy Diamond, the "resident naked troll," as Dreamworks put it. And for today's opening of Trolls, he stopped by SheKnows to play a little game of "Would You Rather."

During the game, he answers a lot of our truly burning questions: Would he rather star in Game of Thrones or Stranger Things? What A-list actor would he take on an adventure? What's his favorite kind of pie?

And, most importantly, would he rather be married to Chris Hemsworth or Ryan Gosling?

"Ryan Gosling," Nayyar said, with absolutely zero hesitation. "Amazing abs."

But then he continued, "Actually, Chris Hemsworth has nice abs, too... only for the movies, though. In between movies, they disappear."

Phew. Glad we have that sorted out.

For more "Would You Rather" realness, including everything you ever wanted to know about Nayyar's preferred hugging method, check out the video up top.

Jimmy Kimmel releases another genius 'I told my kids I ate all their Halloween candy' video

0
0

Earlier this week, Jimmy Kimmel graced the world with another “I Told My Kids I Ate All Their Halloween Candy,” a video series he has done annually for the past six years that features parents breaking the terrible (made-up) news to their kids that they've eaten all their Halloween candy. But because so many people sent in videos of themselves doing just that to their kids after the deadline, he and his producers decided to release a second edition of the hilarious (and kind of tragic) YouTube challenge since it just wouldn’t be right to let all those parents completely ruin their kids’ Halloween for nothing. Also, we need something to giggle about.

This version, the same length as the last, features the reaction of a bunch of tots who have just received the extremely unfortunate news that their parents scarfed down all of their Halloween candy. Their responses are varied, but they are all heartbreakingly cute. For example, there’s the little girl who initially expresses shock but demurely adds, “It’s OK,” prompting her sister to agree. “I don’t want any more candy,” the first sister adds, while her sister goes along with it, uttering the most unconvincing (but adorable) “no” we’ve ever heard.

Then there’s the girl who bursts into tears and cries, “Whyyy,” the way someone on a TV show might after they’ve heard the news that all of their dreams are dashed forever and that the world is ending in two days.

And don’t forget the little boy who simply bursts into tears, unceremoniously lets himself out of the house and goes running off down the street. He definitely might be our favorite.

The video is, in part, a promotion of Operation Gratitude, a charitable organization that encourages people to donate their leftover candy, which is then sent to troops and first responders. So, while Kimmel definitely doesn’t suggest that you donate all of your children’s candy without their knowledge (or, you know, eat it all), there is an option if your family is ready to part with all your hard-earned trick-or-treating spoils.

The perfect treat to relieve election anxiety — yes, even better than wine

0
0

Feeling on edge lately? Can't sleep at night? Maybe you could use some luscious, relaxing Xanax pudding. Well, today is your lucky day because we have the recipe.

More: How to deal with your election anxiety because we're all kind of freaking out

OK, it's not literally Xanax pudding. But nutrition educator, executive chef and founder of balanced, personalized food service Food Matters NYC Tricia Williams has let us in on the secret ingredient to a recipe she created. It's not Xanax — it's kudzu root.

What the heck is kudzu root and what does it do?

Kudzu is a plant that has been used medicinally by Eastern culture for about 2,000 years, Williams tells us. It has several benefits. The starchy root can have a have a calming effect on the body and it can stabilize blood-sugar levels, among other effects.

More: The hot-flashin' lady's guide to eating your way through perimenopause

If you find yourself waking in the middle of the night, it could be because of the way you're eating, Williams says. So the blood sugar-stabilizing effect of kudzu can help you sleep better. She says she gives her 11-year-old son (who has dyslexia and anxiety) some of the pudding with apple slices before bed to help calm his mind.

How do you cook it?

Kudzu root works pretty much the same way as arrowroot or cornstarch. In fact, you can substitute either of those ingredients with kudzu in a recipe using the same measurements. It's not typically sold as a powder, though. It's more often sold as starchy chunks, so Williams suggests making a slurry with warm water before using.

Where can we find it?

You can find kudzu root in health food markets, but the most common way to find it is in the Asian foods section. Look for Eden, which is probably the most common brand that produces it.

How much is effective?

Williams says kudzu root's effectiveness really depends on the individual. There are a million different factors. But generally, about half a tablespoon is a potent amount for most adults. She adds that you can swallow a chunk like aspirin if you're not up to making pudding.

Kudzu root is fairly gentle and should not have an adverse effect for healthy people, but do talk with your doctor about it. It's definitely not the answer for people with high levels of anxiety, either. However, along with other lifestyle changes, it can help those of us with occasional or mild anxiety.

Oh, and it probably goes without saying, but if you're making this as a bedtime snack, go with the original recipe rather than making chocolate pudding. The caffeine in chocolate pudding (especially if you're using high-quality chocolate) is likely to counteract the effects of the kudzu root.

Kudzu root pudding recipe

Yields: 6 servings

Ingredients:

  • 1/3 cup water
  • 2-1/2 tablespoons kudzu powder
  • 1-3/4 cups coconut milk
  • 1/4 cup maple syrup
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 1/2 teaspoon ground ginger
  • 1/4 vanilla bean
  • Pinch of sea salt

Directions:

  1. Place water and kudzu powder into a saucepan. Whisk until powder is dissolved. Add coconut milk, maple syrup, cinnamon, ginger, vanilla bean scrapings and sea salt.
  2. Place the saucepan over medium heat. Whisk often. When the mixture comes to a slow boil, remove it from the heat and allow it to simmer for 5 minutes. Pour it into ramekins or desired serving cups. Chill it in the refrigerator for 2 hours before serving.

Cats aren't the low-maintenance pets we think they are

0
0

If you're on the precipice of adding a pet to your home and can't decide between a dog and a cat, the deciding factor may very well boil down to time and energy. Obviously, it's a huge commitment any time you add a furry friend to your family, but some pets are decidedly less work than others.

So what about our BFFs — or best feline friends? How low-maintenance are cats... I mean, really?

It seems as though a lot of people on the fence between adopting a cat or a dog err on the side of the cat due to a preconceived notion that cats are low-maintenance pets. In fact, if you Google "low-maintenance pets," cats are highly likely to pop up on the top of many of the lists returned by the search results.

More: 16 adventurous cats that prove the outdoors aren't just for dogs

So to get to the bottom of whether or not cats really are better-suited for time-strapped humans than their canine counterparts, I decided to compare the general care criteria for each species as outlined by an organization who certainly knows a thing or two about both: the ASPCA.

Let's take a look at the breakdown before we explore other theories, shall we?

Feeding

As puppies, dogs need to be fed multiple times throughout the day, depending on age. However, this tapers off around their first birthday, and one meal per day generally suffices. While cats don't need to eat as frequently when they are young, they do have certain specific dietary needs — most notably taurine, an essential amino acid that aids in heart and eye health. Both dogs and cats require a steady supply of fresh, clean water. And, similarly, treats should be limited for both.

Grooming

Again, this is basically a draw. In general, neither dogs nor cats require much bathing. In fact, most breeds can get away with a few times per year. However, these needs may increase if you are dealing with long-haired breeds or breeds with other special considerations. Both dogs and cats should be brushed frequently to help keep their coats clean and prevent matting.

Housing

Both cats and dogs need a warm, quiet, clean place in the home to rest. Their bedding should be washed frequently. While dogs are more amenable to being outdoors for longer periods of times, outdoor cats do not tend to live as long as indoor cats.

Potty-training

We all know the deal, right? Dogs do it outdoors, which must be picked up in most municipalities. Fortunately, most urban areas have designated doggy poo disposal bins. Cats, as they are indoor creatures, require a litter box. Just as you must pick up your dog's doo anytime he goes on the neighbor's lawn, you must also scoop your cat's litter box every single day. If you don't, your cat will throw you side-eye for life. Plus, it'll get gross. Once a week, you should dump the kitty litter and wash the box with a mild detergent.

More: 7 litter box traits to make your cat a better roommate

Health

Cats and dogs should both see the veterinarian at least once a year for their annual shots and a wellness check. Dogs and cats should both be neutered/spayed to prevent overpopulation as well as future health problems associated with unaltered pets, and this procedure typically costs slightly more for dogs than for cats. Dogs, unlike cats, do require more exercise in order to torch calories and keep their minds stimulated. A listless pup can quickly become a trouble-making pup! While cats don't need to be taken for walks per se, they also require something to curtail destructive behavior: a scratching post. Cats need to scratch, so you need to provide them with a designated place to do it.

There you have it — on the surface level, dog and cat care is remarkably even-matched where time and energy is concerned, with cats gaining a slight edge simply because they don't require as much exercise as dogs.

What's the verdict?

But is there more to it than that? Dr. Eric Barchas believes so. During an interview with Catster, the veterinarian opened up about how his opinion regarding the maintenance level of cats has evolved over time. It's not merely a matter of cats being less maintenance because you don't have to walk 'em.

Rather, he explained, "Cats live complex lives, and they have phenomenally intricate social structures. Cats are survivors. They can get by without human interaction. But to truly thrive, they need us and they need our love. Without enrichment, they get bored and act out. Worse still, cats who are starved of attention, love and entertainment may suffer serious medical problems."

Whoa, whoa, whoa... what?

As it turns out, neglected cats often fall victim to a condition called feline idiopathic cystitis, which results in the bladder and the urethra becoming agitated. Not only is it excruciating for the poor cat, it can actually be life-threatening for male cats (who are cursed with super-narrow urethras).

The notion that cats require as much — if not more — physical and emotional attention as dogs is echoed by the Humane Society of the United States.

Because cats are very sensitive creatures, they explain on their website, they need affection and energy channeled their way in order to stay stress-free, healthy and happy. To accomplish this, the Humane Society recommends playing with your cat for 10 to 15 minutes twice a day through games like chase or fetch. Sounds kind of like the exercise requirements for dogs, eh?

You should also ensure your home has plenty of interesting and cat-appropriate things for your feline friend to explore in order to prevent boredom. This may include hiding food in various spots around the house for your cat to find or even rubbing a little catnip on your kitty's toys.

More: 100 unique cat names that have as much personality as your new kitty

You should create a safe environment too. The Human Society suggests providing hiding places, resting spaces and calming products aplenty to give your cat a calm feeling at all times.

And lastly, you should stick to the routine. Cats do not like change. It makes them antsy, insecure and just downright cranky sometimes. Accordingly, you should do your best to stay on track with your typical schedule.

If this all sounds like a lot of work, that's because it is. It goes without saying that any pet is, but the big picture here is that cats aren't exactly the extremely low-maintenance companions they are often made out to be. Just like dogs, they require lots o' time and energy.

Although if you've ever tried to work on a laptop with a cat in the room, you're probably well aware of their, ahem, unique attention requirements.

Shark Tank's Barbara Corcoran should have been more Eco Flower friendly

Trust me, I love when my guy shows up at my door with a big bouquet of flowers, just like the most women in this world. Let's be honest, though. They look pretty for a week — if that — and then it's just a dried-out mess.

Tonight on Shark Tank, Eco Flower offered a more environmentally friendly way of spoiling a lady that Barbara Corcoran and Lori Greiner shouldn't have snubbed so quickly.

More: Shark Tank's Wally Amos didn't deserve a deal, but he does deserve success

Now, before I address Corcoran and Greiner's response to Eco Flower, a little disclaimer first: I recognize this company had some problems. I'm not saying Corcoran and Greiner shouldn't have gone out like they did. What I am saying is that both ladies didn't warm to the business because they both admitted that they like real flowers better, and they didn't think the market, especially the wedding market, would accept the idea of fake flowers enough to make a booming business.

In response to that, I think the company's $2.8 million in sales would suggest otherwise. Just saying.

Also, just because a bride might want some real flowers, that doesn't also mean she wouldn't love to have some pieces that would last more than a week after her ceremony.

Not everyone is like Corcoran.

And by that, I also mean not everyone is a multimillionaire who can afford to constantly replace their dead blooms.

More: The Shark Tank Sharks don't need to force the drama

Not only that, but an Eco Flower bouquet would make a great Mother's Day, birthday or just-because gift, and the price point is definitely comparable to real flower delivery services, if not even a bit more affordable.

Clearly, Eco Flower found a fan in me. Their bouquets are absolutely stunning.

If we’ve told you once, we’ve told you a million times—good skin is the foundation for great makeup looks. Honestly though, if the past year was any indication, good skin is pretty much where it’s at, makeup regardless (but we like that too much to give it up, obviously). Not all of us live under the Swiss Alps or near majestic hot springs that naturally impart a regional glow to our faces, but we CAN take measures into our hands and glow-up, as it were. Here are some serious contenders—some old favorites, some fresh out of the lab—in the Glo-lympics (It’s a thing… we just made it a thing).

Dark but beautiful baby names for girls

When you think of dark baby names, you may think of names that are only suitable for kids of The Addams Family. While they admittedly do have an amazing knack for naming their babies, the names we have gathered here are a little more melodious to the ear and are frankly quite beautiful.

All the names here mean "night" or "dark," or they're related to these elements in some way. For example, the pretty name Amaya means "night rain." Others refer to that great black bird, the raven, and still others envelop the natural darkness of a few items, such as Ebony and Melantha.

It hurts me to see pregnant women after suffering a miscarriage

0
0

Yet another jubilant pregnancy announcement. I felt it like a brick slammed into my gut. I was sitting in my office when I made the mistake of checking Facebook between clients. The woman in question looked joyous and glowing, full of life literally and metaphorically. The post, albeit wonderful, reminded me of my inability to do the same thing. I plugged in my phone, plastered a smile on my face and opened the door to usher in another client.

I am not supposed to talk about this. I am supposed to be kind and inspiring and supportive of my fellow women. But what if my pain and pregnant women's happiness exist at the same time?

My baby was supposed to be born in five days. She was supposed to be a distraction from the current grotesque spectacle of an election.  “The baby will 'Make November Great Again,'" I had quipped to my husband. In the last two years, both my dad and my husband’s Nana passed away in the month of November. But then the baby decided not to come and November remained the way it was: Cold and foreboding of more cold. And I watched other friends post sonogram pictures of their healthy, thriving babies.

My mind has given me several ways to invalidate the feelings I have about my miscarriage. One is that I have a healthy child full of life. You know people that can’t even have one child. You should be grateful. Also, nags the voice. Why should you be sad about something that wasn’t a child yet? That was nothing but a clump of cells? It doesn’t help that this voice is backed up daily by well-meaning friends and family members. But we can’t put qualifiers on what can be grieved and what can’t.

It’s as if life said, "Hey. Here is your chance to take care of another human soul. Here is a chance at joy for your family. Start to change your plans and take down the crib from the attic. Stop eating feta and coffee and start to prepare your older child for a sibling

"Just kidding," it says cruelly. "Back up your car, you don’t get to go down that path anymore. Unbecome a pregnant woman, physically and mentally. Unprepare your child for a sibling. The guest room will just be a guest room and the good news is, you can have as much coffee as you want."

I was in Market Basket, shopping, and there she was:  A pregnant woman dressed in a beautiful flowered sundress. She was stunning – she had that knowing look in her eye, and I swear she could smell my jealousy. And here I was strung out by no sleep, dressed in running clothes, hair a mess. I felt less than, less of a woman, even though my rational mind knew I wasn’t. My body remembered. My body remembered.

I am well aware that the picture of that pregnant woman on Facebook may very well be the same face of a woman who, like me, cried on the cold slab of the doctor’s table one heartbroken day. That she may have gone through numerous fertilization treatments. That she may have been told as a child she never could have children.

But none of that stuff can take away from my imperfect humanity, the stuff that makes you squirm. My humanity that feels less than and raw and yes, sometimes judges, even if she tries really hard not to.

And please don’t ask me to take it away. Please don’t expect me to be inhuman. Women are so much more than one-sided smiley-faced there-for-your-comfort holograms. We are full people, full of the stuff you like and the stuff you may not want to hear.

Married at First Sight's finale put us on edge over the couples' marriages

0
0

It's been several weeks since couples Tom and Lillian, and Nick and Sonia, decided to continue forward with their relationships rather than pursuing divorce on Married at First Sight. On the finale, both couples sit down with the relationship experts and reveal whether they've been able to maintain their relationship outside of the series.

Tom and Lillian are back to discuss what has happened since the finale. Lillian said that it was hard in the beginning and that marriage is not easy. Since the start of the show, they always seemed to have a physical connection, but she's discovering that she and Tom have different lifestyles. Still, they've remained married. The experts are obviously pleased that the two stayed together and felt that they were a great match together. What is really interesting here is that despite their differences, the two were able to work through their differences. For example, Tom seemed to enjoy living on the bus and Lillian did not. That’s OK. They figured it out. Lesson learned: Be able to negotiate differences.

More: Nick and Sonia have some sweet but challenging moments on Married at First Sight

And, of course, there's the real roller coaster relationship of the show, Nick and Sonia. Sonia tells the experts of ups and downs they've experienced since the finale and that she continues to feel that Nick lacks emotion.Sonia says that she believes in marriage but she is not sure Nick has the same values toward the institution. When Nick sits down with the experts he says their relationship is “hit or miss some days.”The experts notice Nick does not have his wedding ring on and ask if the couple is still together. Nick says “yes.”

More: Nick and Sonia try to save their relationship on Married at First Sight

Sonia joins Nick and the couple seem happy and are holding hands. It seems as if they were able to move past some of the issues that showed up earlier in the season.Sonia appears to be a really optimistic and positive person.I give her a lot of credit for continuing the journey even when she was hurt and upset. They appear to be working on communication and creating a positive relationship going forward.

Lesson learned: Communication is so important in a relationship. Don’t discount the power of words to be hurtful or helpful.

Burgundy lipsticks for when red just doesn’t do justice

0

The red lip has been a classic since your grandma was still a Ms. It was a rite of passage for you and not for nothing, a red lip pulls your face together even when you’re not wearing any other makeup. That said, while we throw no shade onto the classic red lip, some days you just feel a bit darker, more mysterious, a bit more adventurous than what your good ol’ red lip can do. It’s a concept you probably wouldn’t realize until you went a little deeper with the hue. A burgundy lipstick is like the evil twin to the red lipstick. It’s just as bold as a red lip but sends a rather different message— one that suggests a bit of mystery and the type of confidence that doesn’t beg for approval. We like to wear our burgundy lipstick on those days when our shades are on, hair is looking perfectly undone, and we’d rather our lips do the talking. Here’s a handful of our favorite burgundy shades.

Black Radiance Lipstick in Eldorado Red

One underrated drugstore brand, Black Radiance, has a great offering of highly pigmented lip colors, including Eldorado Red, which is the perfect creamy deep burgundy shade. It initially applies like a deep stain and you can build from there. (Drugstore.com $2)

MAC has many a cult lipstick shade, Diva, being on the cusp (close runner-up to Russian Red or Ruby Woo) of cult but perhaps a bit too deep for mass appeal. MAC’s classic matte formula looks good with a deeper red anyhow. (MAC cosmetics $16)

Manic Panic Lethal Lipstick in Black Rose

Any true goth remembers the Manic Panic days of multi-colored hair and paled-out complexions. Lo and behold, they offer some really great makeup, too—especially lipsticks which come in a variety of every outlandish shade you can think of. Made to wear true and bright, the formula delivers opaque color and sticks to your lips. Black Rose is marked as a “Goth Fave” on their site, so you can throw all the shade you want. We were really impressed with Maybelline’s Matte Lipstick formulas—such great vibrant color that felt lightweight and velvety on the lips. Divine Wine was definitely a winner with us, since it delivers prestige color on a drugstore budget. (Drugstore.com $6)

NARS Audacious Lipstick in Bette

NARS Audacious lipsticks are something of a gem among the lipstick-obsessed. If you should get any color though, let it be this delightfully dark Bette. From first swipe, you’ll notice how well the color sticks to your lips and the creamy matte formula feels like air. (Sephora $32)

Benedict Cumberbatch & the Chicago Cubs were strippers on SNL & it was glorious

It happened: Benedict Cumberbatch hosted Saturday Night Live. He sang, he danced, he debated his own hotness and he stripped.

More: The women of SNL are killing it this season, and these sketches prove it

Cumberbatch didn't hide from his sex symbol status when he hosted SNL, starring in a sketch called "Why Is Benedict Cumberbatch Hot?" and then taking it one step further by playing a handyman stripper. In the sketch of the night, Cumberbatch appeared as a mullet-rocking stripper working a grandmother's bachelorette party. The grandmother, played by the wonderful Aidy Bryant, died when she was surprised by her party, but her grandchildren were so busy laughing about the strippers they didn't even notice!

The entire sketch was basically the two strippers — Cumberbatch and SNL newbie Mikey Day — humping an "unconscious" Bryant. In other words: Bryant lived out the dreams of many a Cumberbitch. And if you thought Cumberbatch as a stripper was great, just you wait. To finish the skit, SNL brought out three Chicago Cubs stars, Anthony Rizzo, David Ross and Dexter Fowler, who celebrated their World Series win by dancing in short shorts as strippers on live television.

Of course, this week's episode didn't just mark Cumberbatch's SNL debut. It was also the final episode before the presidential election. To commemorate the occasion, tonight's cold open was a sketch of Hillary Clinton (Kate McKinnon) and Donald Trump (Alec Baldwin) discussing her revived e-mail controversy.

The sketch poked fun at the double standard Clinton has faced in the press before completely switching gears. Baldwin and McKinnon both broke character, deciding to take a break from the ugliness of the campaign and frolic around New York City instead.

More: Donald Trump's first presidential action would probably be canceling SNL

The sketch ended with McKinnon and Baldwin rushing back onstage and reminding viewers everywhere to get out and vote. "On Tuesday, we all get a chance to choose what kind of country we want to live in," McKinnon said. No one could have said it better.

Goodshop Sunday will help you save big and give back while holiday shopping

0

You’ve heard of Black Friday and Cyber Monday, and maybe even Small Business Saturday and Giving Tuesday. But did you know there’s another shopping holiday, one where you can get presents for everyone, save money and give back to charities?

More: 6 companies that follow a charitable "buy one, give one" model

Kicking off the holiday shopping season this November 27, Goodshop Sunday is the perfect opportunity for online holiday shoppers to earn big bucks for causes while they shop. It’s a triple threat of giving back - you can give gifts to your loved ones, give back to causes you care about, and give your wallet a break.

The best part though is that on Goodshop Sunday, donations to charities and causes are increased (in some cases doubled!). What’s even more amazing is that after two years of success, Goodshop is offering the same donation-multiplying power every Sunday, starting October 23, and extending through Giving Tuesday (November 29) and Cyber Week (November 28 - December 4.)

So in the spirit of giving, here are some great offers from merchants that will be available starting this Goodshop Sunday and continuing. Happy shopping, saving and holidays!

Shoes

If you know someone who’s looking for the perfect pair of kicks, Goodshop Sunday merchants have lots of offers to choose from. Kenneth Cole will have a site-wide sale up to 35 percent off and you’ll donate eight percent to your favorite cause. Converse has new products in their clearance and up to 40 percent off marked down items. Reebok also has a great selection of sneakers and will increase their donation to eight percent.

Clothing

Whether your sister wants some new yoga pants, dad could use a new sweater or you want to find the best scarf for your best friend, there are plenty of deals to choose from. Gaiam is offering 20 percent off yoga gear plus free shipping on orders over $75 and you’ll give over 18 percent back. With deals from Macy’s you can find sweaters, scarves and any other apparel while giving back to your favorite cause. Other stores such as J. Crew Factory, A’gaci, Frank & Oak and Wet Seal will also have deals during Goodshop Sunday.

Food

Maybe you’re looking for a gift to send to your boss or a last-minute gift for the host of a holiday party. These merchants are offering some great gift ideas to make sure your friends, family and coworkers don’t go hungry. Tate’s Bake Shop is offering 20 percent off any order and donates 3 percent back. Cafe Britt provides some great options for premium coffees, chocolate and specialty items.

Other Gift Ideas

Sometimes finding the perfect gift for someone is difficult. But these stores have lots of options to choose from so that no matter what you get, you’ll still get to donate to a nonprofit or cause. Scented products for the home and body are always a good idea, so why not save 20 percent on a gift from Fruits & Passion? Jewelry is another good idea, and with Littman Jewelers modern and chic jewelry you can save money and donate five percent as well.

Michelle Obama's most inspiring speeches over the past eight years

0
0

Michelle Obama has undoubtedly been one of the most memorable first ladies, and so it should come as no surprise that we're really going to miss her. But for now, and in an attempt to celebrate her greatness, we're taking a look back at her most powerful, inspiring speeches over the last eight years.

More: Forget politics, the state dinner was all about Michelle Obama's glamour

1. Democratic National Convention, 2008

Michelle Obama DNC 2008

Michelle Obama DNC 2008

Right back to where it all started — at the Democratic National Convention in 2008, Michelle Obama gave us a chance to get to know her and her husband (and subsequently fall in love with them).

The best part: "[Barack Obama will] achieve these goals the same way he always has — by bringing us together and reminding us how much we share and how alike we really are. You see, Barack doesn't care where you're from or what your background is or what party — if any — you belong to. That's not how he sees the world. He knows that thread that connects us — our belief in America's promise, our commitment to our children's future — is strong enough to hold us together as one nation, even when we disagree."

2. Woman's Day, 2011

Michelle Obama Woman's Day

Michelle Obama Woman's Day

Michelle Obama celebrated the achievements of women, and not just those who were part of the International Women of Courage Awards, but in all of America, with the most touching tribute.

The best part: "Women are now the majority of graduates of colleges and universities. We make up nearly half of America's workforce. We got to get paid more for it. But we do. Women are thriving in every sector of our society. We are leading businesses. We’re serving at the highest levels of government and the armed forces. We're breaking barriers and succeeding in careers that our mothers and grandmothers never could have imagined."

3. Martin Luther King Jr. Preparatory High School graduation, 2015

Michelle Obama Chicago highschool speech

Michelle Obama spoke to students at the Martin Luther King Jr. Preparatory High School's graduation ceremony in Chicago in 2015, telling the students to not let their hardships and failures discourage them from pursuing their education.

The best part: "Instead of letting your hardships and failures discourage or exhaust you, let them inspire you. Let them make you even hungrier to succeed."

4. Democratic National Convention, 2016

Michelle Obama DNC 2016

Michelle Obama DNC 2016

Earlier this year, Michelle Obama spoke at the Democratic National Convention in Philadelphia, and her speech was, in our minds, the most captivating speech of the entire convention. In it, Michelle spoke about her own personal experience in the White House and what it's been like for her and Barack Obama to raise their two daughters in it as their home.

The best part: "With every word we utter, with every action we take, we know our kids are watching us. We as parents are their most important role models. And let me tell you, Barack and I take that same approach to our jobs as president and first lady because we know that our words and actions matter, not just to our girls, but the children across this country, kids who tell us I saw you on TV, I wrote a report on you for school.

"Kids like the little black boy who looked up at my husband, his eyes wide with hope and he wondered, 'Is my hair like yours?'

"And make no mistake about it, this November when we go to the polls that is what we're deciding — not Democrat or Republican, not left or right. No, in this election, and every election, is about who will have the power to shape our children for the next four or eight years of their lives."

5. Tuskegee University commencement, 2015

Michelle Obama Tuskegee University

Michelle Obama Tuskegee University

Michelle Obama gave a 30-minute commencement address at Tuskegee University in which she addressed racial tensions and the struggles of black Americans.

The best part: "As potentially the first African-American first lady, I was also the focus of another set of questions and speculations — conversations sometimes rooted in the fears and misperceptions of others. Was I too loud or too angry or too emasculating? Or was I too soft, too much of a mom, not enough of a career woman?" she said. "Then there was the first time I was on a magazine cover — it was a cartoon drawing of me with a huge Afro and machine gun. Now, yeah, it was satire, but if I'm really being honest, it knocked me back a bit. It made me wonder, 'Just how are people seeing me?'"

6. Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit, 2015

Michelle Obama Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit

Michelle Obama Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit

During Fortune's Most Powerful Women Summit, Obama addressed the global female education crisis and the Let Girls Learn campaign. Addressing the women in the crowd, she remarked on how education had allowed them to transform their lives.

The best part: "You all are the living, breathing proof that when women get a good education and have their voices heard in the halls of power, they don’t just transform their own lives, they transform the life of this nation and our entire world. But unfortunately, as you all know, even today, many women never have these opportunities here in the U.S., and particularly in many developing countries across the globe. In fact, right now, more than 62 million girls worldwide are not in school. They are not getting any formal education at all — no reading, no writing, no math. Nothing."

7. Mulberry School for Girls in London, 2015

Michelle Obama Mulberry High School speech

Michelle Obama Mulberry High School speech

Michelle Obama campaigns hard for education, and during a trip to Mulberry School for Girls in London's East End in June of 2015, she gave the 11- to 18-year-olds valuable advice — including the fact that they should strive to be more than just book-smart.

The best part: "Don't just be book-smart, be smart about the world — know your community, know your politics. You have to be informed and engaged all the time — not just when you think it is interesting or cool. As young women, we have to be interested in politics. You have to think about your whole education."

8. Topeka School District Senior Recognition Day assembly, 2014

Topeka School District speech

Topeka School District speech

Michelle Obama gave a speech to new high school graduates as part of the Topeka School District Senior Recognition Day, and she left them with some very thought-provoking words.

The best part: "No matter what you do, the point is to never be afraid to talk about these issues, particularly the issue of race, because even today, we still struggle to do that. This issue is so sensitive, so complicated, so bound up with a painful history.

"And we need your generation to help us break through — we need all of you to ask the hard questions and have the honest conversations because that is the only way we will heal the wounds of the past and move forward to a better future."

My kid changed gender pronouns and no one has batted an eye

0
0

I was joking around. I teasingly said something about my child, Voldemort, and didn't even realize until V looked up at me with her big eyes and firmly said, "Please don't call me 'him.'"

I had slipped up without even realizing it. And I got called on it.

About a year ago, then 8-year-old Voldemort started playing around with pronouns. Up until then, Voldemort had been "a boy who likes pink," or a "tomgirl." And Voldemort would definitely let you know that he/him/his was the correct pronoun, regardless of the pink Hello Kitty shirt that said, "Girls Rule!" that was currently being worn.

Voldemort first flipped to she/her/hers right at the end of summer, and said "I'm a boy who goes by she!"

I went with it. If you think my brain didn't gibber in terror initially, you are very extremely wrong, but Voldemort asked, so she/her/hers it was. There was a shit ton going on at home with the divorce and V's dad moving to Alaska, and and if switching pronouns gave her some feeling of control? Let's do it.

Then, briefly, we switched to they/them/theirs.

I'm not sure of the why of this one, exactly. We had talked about the gender binary and being gender-fluid and how some people use very different pronouns between she and he. I had an easier time with this switch somehow my brain and tongue didn't get as tangled on it as it did with she/her/hers but it didn't last long.

When Voldemort started taekwondo at a school that prided itself on respect and using yes ma'am/no sir, and we all got a little confused as to how best to work a kid who went by they/them/theirs into that process (they were totally willing, which was AWESOME, we just... couldn't figure out what to use), Voldemort switched to she/her/hers there all the time.

From there, to V's elementary school, where I met with a ridiculous amount of people, all of us nervous. It's not like this was our first meeting. I'd always set up a meeting with the teacher prior to school starting, just to go over "my kid doesn't gender like you and here's how to not be an asshole about it." But this was different. This was, in all of our eyes, a huge, giant, scary step to take. Both out of concern for Voldemort herself, and out of concern that we would do it wrong. Because my kid is the first in the school to be public about her place in the LGBTQIA spectrum. Because of course she is.

I won't lie. It had its ups and downs.

For a while, her teacher just didn't use any gendered words when talking to or about her. Which I totally get, as I did that quite a bit, too. And there were some questions from other students as to why we were calling Voldemort a "she." I jumped every time the phone rang, worried it was the school calling to tell me my child was sobbing or was being bullied or had run away from school.

I have to admit I breathed a sigh of relief when the end of the year came.

I was a little better prepared this year, although not for when Voldemort decided she didn't want to use gendered bathrooms anymore. V started the year as she/her/hers, and other than one comment where Voldemort casually told me that one of her classmates says her family doesn't like anybody transgender, there haven't been any major bumps.

I'm not sure why, then, that I was worried when Voldemort asked me a few weeks ago to talk to her childcare center and tell them to switch pronouns. I told two people there. Two. The owner and the director. They were surprised (I don't know why, they've had Voldemort since she was THREE), and I cringed in anticipation of what their reaction might be.

Which is how I ended up sitting in my car one day after dropping Voldemort off, flapping my hands and trying not to do more than tear up a little. Because when we had walked in, and I braced myself for whatever was to come next, all we had heard was "Good morning, ladies!" "Hey, Alianora, how's she doing today?" "Are we picking her up after school this week?"

We have been lucky. We have been SO lucky. Voldemort is supported at school, supported at childcare, supported by friends. It's scary as hell some days, but she blows me away with her ability to self-advocate and her willingness to be so very open about her gender.

Kids are badass. LGBTQIA kids are especially badass.

In true big sister style, Beyoncé totally embarrassed Solange at SNL debut

Cumberbitches came out in droves this weekend to cheer on their beloved Benedict Cumberbatch as he hosted Season 42 Episode 5 of Saturday Night Live and, well, he didn't disappoint. It's hard to pick a favorite sketch for the evening, but "Surprise Bachelorette" was pure magic with Cumberbatch showing up in all his stripperific man-bun glory.

Another highlight of the show was Dana Carvey showing up as the Church Lady during "Weekend Update." It really was special.

But as amazing as Cumberbatch's turn as Saturday Night Live host was, he certainly wasn't the belle of the ball on the Nov. 5 episode. No, that title belongs to Solange, whose SNL debut proved that you're never too old to be embarrassed by your big sister — even if you big sister happens to be Beyoncé.

Queen Bey and her mother, Tina Knowles, showed up to show support for Solange on her big day. They even hoisted her up in the air in celebration, though Solange protested the entire way through.

But as embarrassed as Solange was — or, at least, pretended to be — the attention from her family was well deserved. Her ethereal performance of "Cranes in the Sky" showcased her vocal talent and demonstrated the eclectic range of the Knowles sisters.

Drew Barrymore & Will Kopelman are #DivorceGoals this holiday season

0
0

During the past seven months of Drew Barrymore and Will Kopelman's divorce journey, Kopelman has come off looking like a bit of a jerk.

The gossip mill and ever-so-reliable inside sources claimed that the couple split because Kopelman wasn't a fan of Barrymore's free-spirited ways, and the language used to describe Kopelman's feelings made us all cringe. But now, as new details emerge about how Kopelman and Barrymore plan to spend the holidays together, we're starting to see their situation in a very different light.

For the sake of their two daughters, the former couple will be spending Christmas together as a family unit, according to Barrymore.

More: Divorce? What divorce? Drew Barrymore's life is pure adventure

"Most of the family is going on this big adventure trip and our kids are just too young, so Will and I are going to do something fun with them," she told Page Six on Thursday. "We have like three sets of different Christmas plans... and then we’re going on this [vacation]. It’s going to be really nice and I’m going to a warmer climate, so I’m excited."

And Barrymore says the holidays aren't the only time she and Kopelman plan to spend time together. In fact, they're still close friends.

"We were together today at our kids’ school," she added. "We spend weekends together. He’s running in the [New York City] Marathon, so we’re going to go and wave him on."

Barrymore's happy co-parenting report is awesome — and also a far cry from what we were hearing about her relationship with Kopelman over the summer.

"She's so hippie-dippy and all over the place and it started to become unbearable for him," an inside source told Us Weekly of Kopelman's feelings about Barrymore in July, adding that Barrymore "tried to be what Will wanted" but "she just isn't a normal housewife."

More: Drew Barrymore's ex-husband's out of the picture, but her in-laws still love her

Who knows how many of the reports are actually true, but previous rumors certainly didn't have us in Kopelman's corner. Now, awesome co-parenting to keep their kids healthy and happy? That's something we can get behind.

Weekly horoscopes: Nov. 7 — Nov. 13

Much of our time isn't spent in the present moment. A lot of energy goes into fretting over that to-do list, ruminating over the past or floating hopeful boats into the future with the aim that one of them might reach its intended destination. But how much do we key into the here and now? There's something about the sun/Pluto sextile on Nov. 7 that will allow you to identity the things that are working for you in your life and the things that are not. And thanks to this unique combination of energies, you'll be able to jettison the stuff that doesn't really matter. This will allow you to center your focus and to masterfully direct your energies to where you want them to go.

Ruling planet Mercury enters Sagittarius on Nov. 12. Sagittarius is the sign that sits opposite you in the zodiac, which means that Mercury here could stir up rivalries. Thankfully, Mars in Aquarius gives you the necessary clout to smack down the hands of grabby partners and competitive co-workers. But what really matters is that you stop tap dancing in and out of your professional obligations. It sends the message that you're on the fence and invites competitors to poach on your territory with impunity. Make a point of reestablishing your boundaries and patrolling your borders. That way, people will think twice about messing with you.

CANCER (June 20 - July 21)

Why is it that you're always the one who has to make the respectable decisions? It comes with the territory. You were born under Cancer — one of the two parent signs of the zodiac (the other one is Capricorn) — so it falls to you to be the designated adult when others are being cowardly and irresponsible. It's not much fun in the moment, but your prudence and integrity has never led you astray. This is something you will need to remember on Nov. 7, when you will have to make the decision that you know that a superior or client can't (or won't) make.

You're not the only one who has blossomed in recent months. Your workplace has too. It looks as if your coming into your own has also coincided with your company taking a step up in the world. There's something about your megawatt smile, infectious enthusiasm and indefatigable optimism that has a positive effect on business. And if your boss or client is smart, he will capitalize on it. Meanwhile the sun/Pluto sextile on Nov. 7 shows you putting the finishing touches on a pitch or proposal. This promises to do a lot to advance your interests and to raise your profile.

Check in with a client or customer to make sure that you're both on the same page with how a certain project or endeavor is coming along. You've been given a lot of leeway to do what you want, but you don't want to set yourself up for any unpleasant surprises. It would be great if you could just wow him with your creative genius, but people in charge are rarely easy to please. They're often skittish and full of second thoughts, which is why you'll want to walk him through what you've done and the reasons you made the choices you did.

When's the last time you updated the look of your home office? It's something to think about while Venus is in Capricorn (Nov. 11 through Dec. 8). You were born under the zodiac sign of good taste. You like to be surrounded by beautiful things and are deeply influenced by your environment. If things are disorganized or in disrepair, then you'll feel it both mentally and emotionally. This could explain why it's been so hard for you to focus. A spontaneous bit of feng shui will do wonders for the soul. You might also want to apply it to some of the people in your life.

A sibling or friend was recently maligned. Being a loyal Scorpio, you came to this person's defense and successfully beat off the attack and turned around people's opinions. It was a long and hard-fought victory, but you did it. On Nov. 9 a piece of information will come to light that will call into question the credibility of the person you just defended. What to do? You've never been a big fan of total transparency, but you really must share the information that you have. Surprisingly, this could elicit sympathy from those who are typically critical of your actions, and even more shockingly, it could also elicit their approval.

You believe that each one of us was born with a unique purpose and looking for yours is a never-ending quest. But sometimes you can get so involved in the searching that you miss out on the finding, and this is something you need to pay attention to this week. As a fire sign, you expect big answers to your big questions. But what if those answers aren't so grandiose? What if they are simpler and humbler than you think? It's food for thought and it's worth it to reexamine the workings of your day-to-day life. You may discover that what you're looking for is close at hand.

There's nothing wrong with high expectations if they uplift and inspire you, but when they leave you feeling thwarted and discouraged, you need to think about lowering them. High expectations are no good if they're always out of reach. That's when they become a setup for failure. This could be based on a judgmental parent, a skewed concept of success or you giving more credence to self-criticism than to your creativity. Believe your peers when they praise you for a job well done on Nov. 7. Otherwise telling yourself that you will never be good enough will eventually become a self-fulfilling prophecy.

AQUARIUS (Jan. 20 - Feb. 17)

It won't be easy living with Mars in Aquarius for six weeks. Mars was named after the Roman god of war, so he's a fighter and not a lover. Translation? Mars is good for championing causes and winning arguments; however, Mars doesn't lend itself to tolerating different points of view or building consensus, which are things you usually espouse. You will think that you are being your same reasonable self, but you aren't. You're apt to be inflexible, heavy-handed and maybe even paranoid, but that's OK. We all have our off days. Just make sure you give loved ones fair warning ahead of time.

No more dreaming about what could be while slaving away at thankless tasks that drain your creative energy. A fortuitous sun/Pluto sextile on Nov. 7 shows you stripping away the layers of excuses and diversions that have built up over time and getting to the heart of what you truly desire. What's needed now is an absolute commitment to furthering your goals — especially those that promise to take you where no Pisces has gone before.

Venus enters the staid sign of Capricorn on Nov. 11. Expect a change in mood as the planet of love and beauty means serious business when she's traveling through this zodiac sign. The only thing you'll want to focus on is how to get ahead in love. No more hookups, dating guys on the rebound or dumbing down to make your boyfriend feel comfortable. A lot of times people date beneath them because they're afraid of being alone. Unfortunately, this leads to relationships in which they feel frustrated because they settled for what was around rather than setting their sights on something better. Don't make this mistake. Step up your game and get your act together and you could wind up with a classier guy. Venus will be in Capricorn from Nov. 11 to Dec. 8.

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)
Image: SheKnows

Usually, you're the one who flies to the rescue, so it will come as a complete surprise to see a loved one fly to yours on Nov. 7. This concerns a predicament that you thought you had a grip on, but discovered that you didn't. Most people would be happy with this eleventh-hour bailout, but not you. You don't like helplessness in others and you can be even more embarrassed and unforgiving when you see helplessness in yourself. That said, you might want to lighten up and try to show some gratitude instead. After all, reciprocity is what love is all about.

TAURUS (April 19 - May 19)

For months, you prayed that your partner would get a break. He's really gone through a dry spell workwise. Thankfully, the sun/Pluto sextile on Nov. 7 will change all of that when he receives an offer or is finally hired. The only problem is that this could conflict with the life you've set up together. The hours may be all wrong; he may have to commute long distances or travel extensively. Your heart may sink at the prospect, but put a good face on it. Only time will tell whether this will work out; what's important is that he's back on his feet again.

There's something to be said for sticking by someone you're not sure you're supposed to be with. Saturn in your opposite sign has really put you through the paces, and truth to tell, there's been more cons than pros when it comes to weighing the future of this relationship. But somehow, something always comes up that brings you back together again. Maybe it's the burdens you carry, the challenges you face or the history you share. These might not be the most romantic reasons for being with this person, but there's no denying that he gets you more than anyone else does.

At first, you couldn't stand this person. Gradually, disdain gave way to begrudging respect and now that looks like it's turning into something more. This is a rare miracle in a world polarized by absolute likes and dislikes. Usually, you don't change your mind about people; however, weeks of being forced to work side by side or being made to spend time together has taught you to be more than tolerant; it's actually made this person more human, approachable and even appealing. Don't look now, but this could turn out to be one of the strangest beginnings to a relationship that you've ever experienced.

Combative Mars enters your opposite zodiac sign, Aquarius, on Nov. 8, so you can expect a lot of heated disagreements in your relationship over the next six weeks. You will naturally see yourself as being infinitely reasonable, but you might want to review those areas of your life where you are being inflexible. And if you can't think of any, ask your friends. They'll tell you. Fights are never fun, but they are a necessary part of being a couple. Fights teach us to stand up for ourselves, to respect personal differences and to broker truces so you don't go to bed angry.

VIRGO (Aug. 22 - Sept. 21)

This would be a good time to breathe and to remember that your lover is in love with you and not with your idea of you. This isn't an easy concept for a Virgo to wrap her mind around because you spend a lot of time outside of yourself looking in. Nevertheless, the sun/Pluto sextile on Nov. 7 urges you to strip away those external expectations you impose on yourself and to exchange them for the very real intimacy that's on offer in your relationship now. After all: If you can't trust your lover with recognizing your authentic self, then who can you trust?

Mars enters that part of your solar chart that pertains to matters of the heart on Nov. 8. This is bound to rock your world! This is the most passionate planet in the most romantic angle of the heavens, but be forewarned: Things are never smooth-going when Mars is involved. You'll want to fasten your seatbelt because it's going to be a bumpy ride over the next six weeks. Things will be on, then off, then on again, and both of you will be convinced that things will never work out, but the stars say otherwise. Yours is truly a match made in heaven.

And guess what? They did! Thankfully, you were born under a zodiac sign that comes to life in a crisis. If anyone can save the day while putting people in their place — it's you.

You should know better than to trust appearances when life is too quiet on the home front. The moon/Neptune occultation on Nov. 9 shows that a loved one's private struggles have returned. This person was trying to keep things under wraps, and you need to believe him when he says that's why he didn't confide in you in the first place. He thought he had things under control. Is this is a huge disaster? Not if things are handled properly, quickly and with care and sensitivity. Show him that you're in his corner and you'll successfully avert a disaster in the making.

Venus, the planet of love and beauty, enters Capricorn on Nov. 11. Venus rules over the power of attraction, which is why you will be showered with so many compliments, invites and gifts over the next three and a half weeks. You'll also experience a huge bump in popularity — especially with men. Needless to say, you'll want to be out and about during this period, so make room in your schedule even if things are crazy at work. You don't want to miss out on what Venus has to offer. If there were ever a time to make that love connection you've been looking for, it's now!

You need to believe people when they say you're being a hard-ass. It isn't easy to do when you're fighting with a lover, squabbling with a sibling or bickering with a friend, but the fact that you're at odds with the people in your life should tell you something. This is what happens when Mars is traveling through your zodiac sign. More lion than lamb, Mars won't back down when it comes to getting its way, and that aggression will be driving your personality from Nov. 8 to Dec. 19. Don't spare the apologies, ask for patience, and you'll get through this period relatively intact.

It's never easy to talk about what you want in a relationship. As a water sign, you expect your partner to pick up on what's going on deep inside of you. Water signs — the other two are Cancer and Scorpio — believe that we all draw from the same emotional reservoir. Well, some people draw more deeply than others, and that difference between you and your lover is becoming increasingly obvious. If you're going to bed at night with a scorecard full of resentments, say something on Nov. 9. More feelings have been hurt by things left unsaid than by things that are said.
