How to look taller: 14 fashion tips that really work

$

If you’re petite, your height can feel like a serious impediment to your style. (You’re probably BFFs with your tailor, no?) Until science comes up with a way for short folks to add a few extra inches, however, your best bet is to rely on a few clever fashion tips and tricks to fake those extra inches. Below, we outline how to look taller using the fashion you’ve got in your closet.

Read on, and be sure to let us know in the comments your tips for looking taller!

Try flared jeans.
Image: Shut Up I Love That Shirt on You

1. Try flared jeans.

Fitted jeans with a distinct flare at the bottom create the illusion of a longer leg— especially when the hem hits the top of your shoes (heels, of course!) The trick here is to keep the fit of the jean super-slim through the leg, and to make sure the waistband hits your natural waist—not any lower. For optimal height, be sure to pair your flares with a waist-length top, or a blouse you can tuck in.

Don’t discount maxi skirts!

2. Don’t discount maxi skirts!

It’s common fashion folklore that small women simply cannot wear floor-grazing skirts and dresses, but luckily that’s been proven entirely false. In fact, a well-cut maxi skirt can actually give you the appearance of looking taller, as evidenced by petite gals like Rachel Bilson, Rachel Zoe, and Mary-Kate Olsen.

Choose solid versions that skim the length of your body, which will create a long vertical line (forego anything with thick pleats or too many layers.) Be sure to keep your top fitted—a tucked-in T-shirt and a cropped leather jacket, for example—so as to not drown in fabric. Also, make sure the skirt’s hemline is as long as you can go without tripping, and add a pair of wedges or heels underneath.

Choose heels with a low-cut vamp.

3. Choose heels with a low-cut vamp.

Here’s small trick that can change the way you shoe shop: Shoes that have a low-cut vamp instantely elongate your leg (and make them look slimmer, as well) when you’re wearing skirts, shorts, and dresses.

What’s a vamp? It’s the portion of a show that cuts across your foot at the front. So, a low vamp cuts across the base of the toes, while high vamp can come up the foot and possibly up to the ankle. If you’re able to find a pair that matches your skintone, like the image above, that’s even better to give the illusion of mile-long legs.

If you’re going short, go short!
Image: Miroslava Duma

4. If you’re going short, go short!

When you’re petite, it’s just a fact that—when it comes to skirts and dresses—you should either go super-long, or super-short (translation: avoid calf-length and knee-lengths). Mini-skirts show more skin, which creates the illusion of a longer leg. Here, petite It-girl Miroslava Duma pairs her mini-skirt with a matching top (see tip #6!) and sky-high platforms.

While ankle straps typically aren’t ideal for short ladies (they cut off your leg), they can work with super-short skirts since more skin is being shown. Of course, if you’re wearing a mini, make sure it’s not offensively short—let’s keep it chic, ladies.

Rock a top knot!
Image: Wander with Style

5. Rock a top knot!

Obvious, yes, but piling your hair on top of your head really does gives a taller impression, again creating a more vertical line. Same goes for hair that’s simply voluminous—it adds inches! Time to put away that flatiron, friends.

Wear all one color
Image: Vogue Spain

6. Wear all one color.

Using color to enhance the illusion of height is a highly effective strategy, as it helps create a vertical line. While wearing head-to-toe black is the simplest—and eternally chicest—option, saturated hues work well, too (a look that’s incredibly now, as well.) The trick to monochrome dressing: Keep each silhouette crisp and tailored.

Say yes to high-waist bottoms!
Image: Stockholm Streetstyle

7. Say yes to high-waist bottoms!

High-waist bottoms get a bad rap, possibly thanks to an unfortunate Jessica Simpson style mishap, but when worn correctly, they can trick the eye into thinking you’re taller by elongating your lower body. Whether you choose skirts, shorts or skinny jeans, be sure to make the elevated waist visible by tucking in a tailored blouse, or opting for a slightly cropped top.

Wear pointy flats.
Image: Auds3/Instagram

More: What to Wear With a Jean Jacket

8. Wear pointy flats.

Since nobody can be expected to wear sky-high heels every day, petite gals should invest in a pair of pointy flats. Why? Because it’s a known fact that shoes with pointed toes lengthen your leg line.

Rock out with vertical stripes.
Image: The Pink Peonies

9. Rock out with vertical stripes.

It’s the oldest trick in the book for a reason: Vertical stripes create long lines, thus making you look, well, longer. Bonus: Stripes are one of spring’s biggest trends, so you’ll have absolutely no problem locating some cute striped options.

Ditch the gigantic shoulder bag!
Image: Etsy

10. Ditch the gigantic shoulder bag!

Keeping your accessories appropriately scaled to your body size is a smart move for petite girls, starting with that oversized bag. Here’s why: Every time you cause the eye to take in width, you reduce the amount of height it takes in. That means smaller cross-body bags, clutches, and small top-handle totes are your best bet.

Chop your hair.
Image: Joujou Villeroy

11. Chop your hair.

Long hair drags petite girls down, while shorter hair does the opposite. For the wary: A wavy lob (long bob) is the best option—it shows off your shoulders and your neckline, which makes you look taller (plus, it’s so chic!).

Daring gals should go even shorter: a super-sleek chin-length bob or an elegant gamine-esque pixie.

Stick with skinny belts.
Image: Lookbook.Nu

12. Stick with skinny belts.

When it comes to belts, short girls should always opt for a skinny version—it’ll define your natural waist in the most flattering way possible, but won’t cut you in half the way a super-thick belt can, which causes you to look shorter.

Be mindful of proportion.
Image: Sincerely Jules

13. Be mindful of proportion.

When you’re petite, it’s imperative to be sure all your clothes fit properly (a good tailor is key!). Wearing cropped skinny jeans? Make sure they’re not too cropped and that the hem hits the ankle area—small gals should avoid anything resembling capri pants, as they cut your leg awkwardly. With blazers and jackets, always make sure the seams sit perfectly at the bony tops of your shoulders and that the sleeves hit exactly at your wrist.

Wear V-necks.
Image: Because I’m Addicted

14. Wear V-necks.

Tops with plunging V necklines give the illusion of a longer, leaner torso, so keep that in mind when you’re shopping for new tops this season!

JoJo Fletcher's Chipotle wedding plans are actually kinda genius

JoJo Fletcher and Bachelorette Season 12 winner Jordan Rodgers haven't set a date for their wedding yet, but that doesn't mean that don't already have huge plans for their big day. Planning for their nuptials has definitely commenced, and Fletcher is all in on including her favorite fast food chain into the reception after the main event.

"I am big on floral arrangements — but also, and this is crucial, a late-night Chipotle mini burrito bar for guests as they are leaving," Fletcher said of her must-haves in a recent interview with Womanista.

Your first reaction to Fletcher's Chipotle revelation might be, "Well, that's (nacho) cheesy," but if you think about it, the idea is actually quite genius. No one ever gets enough to eat during the sit down portion of a wedding, and a burrito bar at the end of the party is an excellent way for all the guests to soak up the alcohol. And who doesn't love Chipotle? You know they're going to be thanking her the next day.

More: JoJo Fletcher & Jordan Rodgers are giving each other gray hair

And if you still think Fletcher's Chipotle bar is lame, chances are, she doesn't care.

"At this point we have come to realize that there will always be people who will have something negative to say — and to be honest, we don’t feel the need to ‘prove’ anything to those individuals," she said in the interview. "We know the love we have for each other, our family knows, our friends know, and like I said, we have been blessed with people all over country/world that support us so that is enough for me J."

One of those negative things Fletcher probably realizes people are talking about is the fact she and Rodgers haven't set a date yet, but she's really not sweating that, either.

"To be honest, we love this period right now where we get to be stress free and actually date and be with each other in a more normal setting, so we have just been soaking that in!" she said.

Soaking it all in, and eating tons of Chipotle.

Grey's Anatomy better be joking with this whole 'Webber might be leaving' thing

$

0

As if the prospect of Alex Karev leaving Grey Sloan wasn't horrible enough, this week's episode of Grey's Anatomy gave fans a new fear: that we'll lose Dr. Richard Webber, too.

It all started last week when Catherine Avery brought a startling trend to Miranda Bailey's attention — residents at Grey Sloan do not seem to thrive. The skirmish between Alex and DeLuca was the latest in a long line of drama between attendings and residents.

More: Grey's Anatomy deleted scene proves there's more love triangle drama to come

Her suggestion? They bring a third party in to assess the residency program. Yes, as in the one run by Catherine's own husband, Richard. To make matters worse, this was all done very cloak and dagger behind his back. Bailey, girl, I thought better of you.

So in comes newcomer Dr. Eliza Minnick (Marika Dominczyk) to seriously shake things up. Her first order of business is chatting with all of the residents to determine any issues they may have with the attendings. Naturally, this is a move that puts the attendings on edge.

She also horns in on several procedures being performed by the attendings and basically plays backseat driver — surgeon version — the entire time.

The kicker, though, is that despite the fact no one particularly likes her, Minnick makes sense. Even Maggie admits her methods work. Heck, even Webber comes around... well, thanks to a "little push" from his sweet geriatric patient and her adorable ride-or-die.

What's the problem then, right?

Minnick can come on board, and she and Webber will work alongside each other to reform the residency program. Only, nope! That's not gonna happen, because near the episode's close Minnick explains to Miranda she works alone. In other words, Webber has to go.

Now, hold on just one hot-damn minute. Are you listening, Shonda Rhimes? You better not take Richard from us. We sat idly by (read: sobbed uncontrollably and threatened to boycott) when you ripped McDreamy from our clammy superfan clutches.

And since last season's finale, the threat of Alex leaving has been looming over us like some horrible albatross. It was just last episode, in fact, that Alex seemed to confirm he would soon be leaving Meredith and everyone-slash-thing behind.

More: Did Grey's Anatomy's Alex Karev just confirm he's leaving the show?

Still, we soldiered through those tiny daggers to the heart because, well, we're apparently all masochists. Also, though, because we are invested. These characters have been in our lives longer than a lot of our relationships have panned out.

But the buck stops here. I draw the line at Richard. You can't have all of the OG Grey's guys — you just can't. I'm all for female empowerment, and I've very vocally been a fan of the direction the show has taken these last few seasons.

Richard being written off the show might be the proverbial last straw for this fan, though. Why? Because the show just wouldn't be the same with him. Yes, I realize that's probably something we all said when McDreamy died, and yet here we are.

However, it's different. In the beginning, the "Grey" in Grey's Anatomy pointed just as much to Ellis as it did to Meredith. Ellis and Richard were the bones the show was built around. Even though she died many seasons ago, she often makes cameos in the form of her journals or references of respect. Sometimes even flashbacks.

If Richard goes, all of that history goes with him. The show would feel decidedly less familiar and comforting. Because that's what he is, you know? Richard is one of those characters who — even when you don't agree with his decisions — feels like coming home.

More: Not gonna lie, Meredith should mention Derek in every Grey's Anatomy episode

Go ahead, shake things up. Just don't shake Richard right out the door, because you might also shake a few fans who've been losing their grip ever since you got rid of McDreamy.

What do you think? Would you be upset if Richard got written off?

Yeah, Supernatural's new villain Mr. Ketch is the absolute worst

$

We have yet to see his face, but that isn't even necessary to know that Supernatural's newest villain, Mr. Ketch, is truly terrible. He may have a great accent, but that's his only positive attribute. Here we thought Lady Toni Bevell was the one who could possibly be worse than Lucifer. Clearly not.

More: Supernatural was right for giving Mary the boot – even if it's only temporary

During Tuesday's episode, Sam and Dean investigated the case of a young woman name Magda, who her family thought was "the devil," but really she just had psychic abilities. In the end, the Winchester brothers saved the day and managed to get Magda away from her family and mainly her horrific mother.

Thankfully, Sammy was there to relate to Magda. Remember that time he possessed psychic abilities? For awhile now, he hasn't had them, but he still understood exactly what Magda was feeling. By the end of the episode, Sam told Magda to call him whenever she needed him and that she would eventually find her footing. He also reminded her that her powers don't control her, she controls them.

Here we thought Magda was going to get a happy ending. Yeah, that didn't happen. She was on her way to California to live with her aunt, that is until Mr. Ketch showed up. During the investigation of their latest supernatural-related case, a mysterious person on a motorcycle stopped and took note of Sam and Dean's car.

More: All signs point to Supernatural's Mary being a total badass in Season 12

Sam Winchester
Image: Tumblr

At first, it didn't seem like we would learn this person's identity, but that all changed when the motorcyclist showed up at the bus stop, followed Magda into the bathroom and shot and killed her. Let's all say it together, "Poor Magda." If you haven't figured it out yet, the motorcyclist was none other than Mr. Ketch.

After fatally shooting Magda (and with way too much ease for our liking), he made a phone call saying how he cleaned up another one of the Winchesters' messes, because they just couldn't get the job done. Whoa, Sam and Dean clearly got the job done. They saved a woman who didn't understand what was happening to her and gave her hope of a future. If anyone failed, it's Mr. Ketch.

He really is the absolute worst, isn't he? No wonder Toni works for him. They are basically the same person. Overall, the British Men of Letters need to go back to England and leave Sam and Dean alone. Unfortunately, that probably won't happen anytime soon and until Mr. Ketch, Toni and any other member from the London chapter stop the brothers once and for all.

Now would be a great time for Castiel, Crowley, Rowena and even Lucifer to join forces with Sam and Dean to stop these awful, awful people.

Supernatural airs Thursdays at 9/8c on The CW.

Meghan Markle & Prince Harry are serious — like, meeting the family serious

When news of Prince Harry and Suits' Meghan Markle's secret relationship broke earlier this week, the first question that popped into everyone's mind was, "But what will the family think?"

It seems like the thought of beloved Prince Harry getting serious with an — gasp — American actress would be enough to throw the Queen into a tizzy, but from the sounds of things, the inhabitants of Kensington Palace are already cool with Harry's new love.

In fact, Markle met Prince Harry's father, Prince Charles, during a grouse shooting party at the royal Balmoral estate in Scotland back in September, according to Us Weekly. The shooting party was all part of Harry's 32nd birthday extravaganza held at the secluded estate in Aberdeenshire, which was attended by a whole host of his closest friends and family.

More: Prince Harry's rumored new girlfriend Meghan Markle is fit for royalty

"I'd call the visit a coming-out party," an inside source told Us of Markle's appearance at Harry's birthday weekend. "It would have been the first time some of his close friends got to meet her."

Prince Harry B day

Prince Harry B day

Not only did Markle meet Prince Charles, but she also reportedly stayed at his Birkhall residence, a grand hunting lodge on the grounds of Balmoral, says Us. If Charles is letting the couple stay at his place, it's probably safe to say Markle has his seal of approval.

Can you even imagine staying at a place as fancy as the Prince of Wales' Birkhall residence? Not sure how Markle is able to keep her composure.

Image: Giphy

Unfortunately, Prince William and the former Kate Middleton weren't at the event, but they're reportedly next on the docket.

More: Do Prince Harry and Meghan Markle's matching bracelets prove their love?

"Not meeting William and Kate yet has simply been about not being in the same place at the same time... They will see each other soon," an Us insider said, while another added, "It's been important for Harry to introduce Meghan to the people he cares about."

Sure feels like Markle is on the fast track to become an honest-to-goodness princess. Hey, it happened to Grace Kelly, why not Markle?

Tim Gunn was right to save Cornelius Ortiz on Project Runway

$
0
0

Cornelius Ortiz is arguably the least-liked guy on the current season of Project Runway, and for good reason: He's abrasive, he's overly confident and he has a tendency to trash talk his fellow contestants. It's hard to cheer for somebody who throws that much shade, which is perhaps why, when both Mah-Jing Wong and Ortiz were mistreated by their respective teams during tonight's episode, viewers really only spoke out in Wong's favor.

More: There's more to Project Runway's Cornelius Ortiz than his bad attitude

Believe it or not, we're here to defend Ortiz. He was on top of this week's team challenge, which involved creating a collection for a pop-up street display, all while abiding by a specific color scheme. Ortiz was grouped with Dexter Simmons and Erin Robertson, and once again, it was obvious that he was the odd one out. His vision did not match the vision of his fellow contestants, who were way too into the head-to-toe red look.

Erin Robertson
Image: Lifetime

Ortiz voiced his concerns, but his opinion was disregarded. Not only did his fellow teammates fail to give his viewpoint the consideration it deserved, they were willing to sit back and let him do the bulk of the work while they goofed off together.

More: Brik Allen did not deserve his early Project Runway elimination

Despite all of Ortiz's hard work, the red group performed poorly both among pedestrians viewing the pop-up booth and with the judges. The judges didn't think the red group's looks were terrible; they just didn't live up to the other groups. The teammates were then given the opportunity to share who they thought should go home, and of course, both Simmons and Robertson threw Ortiz under the bus. Not cool — Ortiz's instincts were on point and he was clearly not responsible for the team's loss.

Tim Gunn
Image: Lifetime

Thank God for Tim Gunn, who came through with the save. Gunn can see past Ortiz's abrasiveness to the natural fashion instinct that he has consistently demonstrated. He delivered the good news backstage and put a stop to what could have been this season's most dramatic stand-off.

More: Project Runway's swimsuits are not the way to inspire body confidence

It's crazy how quickly contestant perception can shift on this show. Robertson was the darling just a few weeks ago, and Ortiz was the villain. Now, we're cautiously rooting for Ortiz, if only because he was so clearly wronged by his teammates and by the judges.

Do you think Cornelius Ortiz should have been on the chopping block? Did Tim Gunn use his save wisely? Comment and share your opinion below.

Today Miranda Lambert is chanting one mantra: 'back off, haters'

Miranda Lambert had a great time at the Country Music Awards on Wednesday night, and it was made even better by the fact that she got to share it with the guy she loves, Anderson East.

More: Miranda Lambert's ditching the last thing linking her to Blake Shelton

So, in celebration of her perfect night, and because they both looked amazing in their eveningwear, Lambert took to Instagram to share a photo of herself and East (who she referred to as her sweet love).

Miranda Lambert Instagram

Miranda Lambert Instagram

But those happy feelings were soon tainted when people started to give their unwanted opinions and make completely unnecessary comments about East's looks. Comments on the post include one from gage_burger, who wrote, "Damn I even look better than him don't lower your standards shoot for the stars."

"He is not cute at all. She could do soooo much better!" rmartinez83 wrote. And bullockkara — and many other commenters — echoed these thoughts, writing, "He doesn't seem like your kind of Guy! You can do BETTER."

There were even some people who decided to compare East to Lambert's ex-husband, Blake Shelton.

More: Miranda Lambert & Anderson East's future includes big things — like babies

Debbiefrenza wrote, "Sorry you don't look happy and he is no BLAKE SHELTON!" and Sindywith_a_c also compared the two men. They wrote, "I think Blake Shelton is so so much Better Looking, I don't like this new guy at all, I mean really?"

Unsurprisingly, this barrage of hate really got to Lambert, and she took to Instagram again in the early hours of Friday morning to give everyone a piece of her mind. To sum it up, she basically said that she is over social media and all the negative comments that seem to come with it.

"...Last night I was all dolled up and 'out on the town' with my sweet man at the CMA awards in Nashville," she wrote. "I was excited about the night and posted a picture. Just now when I looked I realized so many comments were judgmental and negative. Cowardly people hiding behind a keyboard or a cell phone writing their useless comments about our eyes and clothes and body language. What a bunch of bull shit. Thank y'all for reminding me why I read books, write songs, and spend most of my time with animals and people I trust and love."

As for East, he took to Instagram only once, and that was to share his feelings about how lucky he is to be with Lambert.

Were Robbie E's baby names inspired by a famous singer-songwriter couple?

Pro wrestler Robbie E is a daddy — times two!

More: We know the sex of Blake Lively and Ryan Reynolds' baby — thanks to Dad

He and his wife Tara Strauss welcomed twin boys on Thursday Nov. 3 in New Jersey, and the proud father shared a sweet Instagram snap of the new arrivals.

Robbie E twins baby names

Robbie E twins baby names

And their names are brilliant: Carter Stone Strauss and Cash Steven Strauss. Not only is there a generous helping of alliteration (always cute with twins), they go together like… well, like Johnny Cash and June Carter. We don't know if Robbie E and Tara Strauss are fans of the musical couple, but we'd love to think that was their baby-naming inspiration.

Cash is a diminutive of Cassius and a "word" name meaning hollow, and ranked No. 267 in the U.S. baby name chart in 2015. It's the name of actress Jessica Alba's husband Cash Warren and has also been chosen by several other celebrity couples for their offspring. Actress Annabeth Gish and stuntman Wade Allen named their son Cash in 2007, as did actor Joshua Morrow in 2008 and singer David Haywood of Lady Antebellum in 2014.

More: These twin baby boy names are just the right amount of 'matchy matchy'

Carter, which is an English occupational name meaning "transporter of goods by cart," is a much more popular choice, ranking at No. 24 on the chart in 2015 (its first time in the top 25). It's particularly popular in the Midwest (No. 2 in Nebraska and No. 3 in Iowa) and is also feeling the love in Saskatchewan (No. 2) and Manitoba (No. 5).

As well as being the surname of the 39th U.S. President Jimmy Carter, it's a very popular name for TV characters, featuring in The Walking Dead, Robin Hood, Gossip Girl, American Gothic, Arrow, Family Guy and Spin City.

"Mom is feeling tired but in great spirits," Robbie E said shortly after his sons were born. "Carter came out screaming and sucking on his thumb! Cash was perfectly calm and totally chill."

"Both are resting up for their rock star life!” he added. Yup, we knew there was musical inspiration behind the names. Congratulations to the family of four!

The most flattering nail polish colors for your skin tone

$

When it comes to tough beauty decisions, choosing a single nail polish color for your weekly manicure ranks right up there. Unless you’re paying extra $$$ for nail art, you’ve got to narrow it down to one shade—not exactly the easiest task for anyone who makes a habit of hoarding nail lacquer in their bathroom cabinets.

An easy trick? Ensure you’ll like the color you choose by picking the best nail polish for your skin tone. We asked the experts and rounded up come cute nail colors in shades from nude to blue to guide you on your way to manicure perfection.

Light Skin Tones.

Light Skin Tones.

Behold the polish shades that will look divine on you! The trick with pale skin tones are finding polish shades that compliment, rather than competing with or washing out, your fair complexion. Here’s a special selection of hues to get you started.

Nude: Nude polishes constantly top the most popular lacquer lists, but picking out the right nude for you is definitely a trial-and-error process. Celebrity manicurist Elle, who works with stars like Blake Lively and Jennifer Lopez, says that those with fair skin tones—think Emma Stone–should try a sheer pinkish nude rather than a beige, as she says that could show up yellow.

Red: Go for a classic color, like the red on the bottom of Christian Louboutin’s iconic shoes. It’s a color that Elle says will flatter everyone, even those with light skin tones. When shopping, though, make sure to hold your red polish up to the light. If you can see through it, you know it’s going to be sheer. Likewise, celebrity manicurist and nail guru Deborah Lippmann suggests going for a clean and cool blue-toned red to really make the most of pale complexions.

Pink: When it comes to pinks, those with light skin tones have a ton of options. Deborah says that fair skin can totally rock both sheer pinks or super bright fuchsias with cool undertones.

Purple: For fair skin, Elle says that pastel lavenders look amazing, but to be wary of how much white the color has in it. Generally, you want to make sure it won’t look more white than lilac when it’s sitting against your skin.

Blue: You may be tempted to go for that cobalt, but Elle says that if you have a light skin tone, navy is a fun option. In fact, it’s another that works especially well if you have a warm undertone. “I would say that this color is almost universal,” she says. “Navy goes so great on anyone’s skin tone, you can’t get it wrong.”

Medium skin tones vary—from a bronzy glow to olive—and that changes the colors you wear best depending on your undertone. However, these nail polish picks are universally flattering and gorgeous for your medium-toned complexions.

Nude: While those with very fair skin may lean towards something with a pinkish hint, medium skin can handle something that is a bit more beige. Lippmann describes her favorite beige-nude, “Fashion” (pictured above) as a “full-coverage yellow-based color.”

Red: Orange-reds may reign your lipstick collection, but that shade can work well with your mani, too. Elle explained to us that if you had a skin tone similar to Kim Kardashian, she would choose a red that had a pop of orange to it. Similarly, Lippmann says that she would choose something with gold undertones. “A red with gold undertones will bring out this complexion’s natural glow,” she told us.

Pink: Those with medium skin tones may find peachy-pinks especially flattering, according to Deborah. Look for polishes that are sheer yet pigmented for a juicy, summertime-appropriate look.

Blue: While medium skin tones can do pastel blues, an intense sky blue is an even more flattering choice. Elle says to make sure that any shade you choose has enough pigment in it to really stand out next to your skin, especially if you have warm undertones.

Purple: Purple isn’t just taking over your eyeshadow palette; it turns out that purple polish is super versatile. Elle recommends staying away from pastels with a white base and going towards something with more pigment, like a deep grape shade.

Dark Skin Tones.

Complement your deep skin tone with nail polishes that offer a punch of high impact color. While every shade of lacquer looks amazing on dark skin, these are our picks for the very best shades.

Pink: Elle says that those with dark skin should stay away from light, baby pinks. “Make sure you’re really wearing pink,” she says, pointing to neons and bright fuchsias.

Purple: Deep skin tones can wear both pastel and dark purples equally well. So how should you narrow it down? Try a universal shade that holds a darker berry-tint to it—Deborah Lippmann suggests trying her shade, “Drunk in Love.”

Blue: Got the blues? It’s time to embrace intense the brightest cobalt shades, which will really stand out next to your skin. If you want to do a baby or heather blue, you need to make sure there isn’t too much of a white undertone to the formula.

Nude: When it comes to picking out the best nude for you, cream and beige nail polishes with sheer, jellylike formulas win again. Elle says that when she’s worked with Kerry Washington, she picked OPI’s “Samoan Sand,” pictured above, for the perfect nude shade.

Red: While almost every red looks amazing with dark skin tones, Lippmann says that deep reds work well with darker skin tones and give “a slight variation.” Think full, rich shades that you might find in gemstones or a glass of amazing red wine.

Manzo'd with Children star Lauren Manzo announced her first pregnancy in September, and she's let slip a couple of details about her unborn child.

More: Breastfeeding mom is kicked out of TEDWomen — the irony is not lost on us

During an appearance on Bravo's The Daily Dish alongside mom Caroline Manzo, Lauren Manzo revealed that she is expecting a baby girl, and she also confirmed her due date: Feb. 26, 2017.

However, the mom-to-be is pretty sure her daughter will be late. "I'm due February 26, and there's only 28 days in February and it's a first pregnancy, so I'm kind of saying it's going to be the beginning of March," she said. However, that would make the child a Pisces, which she's not too happy about.

"I was freaking out over [it] at first because there's a couple Pisces that I know that I can't stand," she admitted. "I said to my doctor, 'Maybe we could just do a C-section two weeks early and then it can be an Aquarius.'"

More: Kelly Clarkson has the right attitude toward mom guilt

The Aquarius/Pisces baby will be the first child for Manzo and her husband, Vito Scalia. They announced their happy news via the following statement: "Vito and I are so happy to announce that we are expecting our first child, due early 2017. Everyone is overjoyed for the future addition to the Scalia-Manzo family. It's amazing that we get to share our journey this season on Manzo'd with Children with everyone who has followed us throughout our relationship."

No doubt Manzo — or her mom — will be providing more details about the pregnancy and imminent arrival over the next few months, and before too long, we'll see the newest member of the Scalia-Manzos on our TV screens.

I took my son to see Donald Trump and immediately regretted it

The invitation to meet Donald Trump was no surprise. After all, I am an African-American female Republican in a predominantly Democratic neighborhood. The invitation was from a group of women I have spent time with in the past, women a little more progressive than the Republicans I see frothing at the mouth during some campaign rallies. The invitation said it was a private lunch for women only. Even though it was an event limited to women, I wrangled an invitation for my son.

I said yes for a few reasons.

First, lunch. Hashtag Team Chunk knows little shame.

More: How Hillary Clinton won the vote of this former 'deplorable'

Second, as my constant companion during rallies for President Obama and other local politicians, The Boy loved the camaraderie of voters shouting messages of hope and progression. Plus he likes politics.

Third, The Boy's excitement to meet a presidential candidate was contagious. He hasn't shown this type of excitement since he pressed flesh with then-candidate Tom Wolf.

On the drive to lunch, we discussed questions that we would ask if given the chance. My ESL class helped me shape my questions:

lunch-with-trump

The closer we got to the venue, the less excited we both felt. It wasn't that the lawn signs swung more Republican. From experience, I know that lawn signs don't mean a thing if people don't come out and vote. It was the way people outfitted their cars that caused me to literally slow my roll. A sticker to a car is a commitment. When someone places a bumper sticker on their vehicle, it's permanent. It's a sign saying "I'm dedicated to my platform, car finish be damned." Bumper stickers are personal. Bumper stickers mean business.

More: The real conversations people are having about the election

"Hill No" — a play on the Hillary Clinton logo — was a popular sticker. Quite popular. I can understand the Hill No sentiment. I feel that way every time she voice-overs "I'm Hillary Clinton and I approve this message." The Anti-abortion stickers were the second most popular. Then we followed a car adorned with "Blue Lives Matter," "Go back home," "Give us our jobs back" and "F*ck Isis" written in Arabic letters. Other cars in the lot expressed similar messages: "Build a wall," "Speak American," and "Speak English" to name a few. Looking at these, The Boy asked if we could leave. I was way ahead of him, already punching in The Halal Guys restaurant into my GPS.

This private, classy event was anything but private or classy. Despite the invitation, I did not feel welcomed. I did not feel welcomed by people who discount my feelings not just as an African-American woman but as a mother by disregarding the message behind Black Lives Matter. I cry too often over the latest name as a hashtag, hoping that my son's return from school does not end in tragedy or my daughter's evening out does not lead the evening news.

I did not feel welcomed by people who want Mexicans (or any other undocumented person) to go back to their country. Why would you send a person who was brought here as a CHILD to a place they never knew? How could anyone treat a child so mean?

I did not feel welcomed by people who want to build a wall. Do you really think people would venture north to be a burden? No! People enter this country illegally because they are fleeing wars, gangs, poverty and possible death. People who come into this country undocumented are coming for a better life. It's easy to say "Wait your turn." But who can wait when the immigration process is unfair? Diversity Immigrant visas make up to 50,000 immigrant visas available a year and are limited to countries that don't normally have large groups of people in the States. People who circumvent the process are usually paying money to a person that will smuggle them into the country. Smuggling includes crossing a river, little sleep and walking far longer than I care to imagine — one woman told me eight hours each night.

I did not feel welcomed by people who lump all Muslims together. I take a Civics class where a phenomenal group of women who welcome homesick students to their circles, regardless of which country they hail from. A family of refugees from Syria, in the country less than a week, were given phone numbers to call and plans were made to visit. A family from Egypt suffering from American Dream Syndrome were provided food, child care services and diapers.

I cannot say I was disappointed that the day did not go as planned. I used my time to return some items to one of the fanciest Targets I have ever seen and get lunch from The Halal Guys.

I can only blame myself for thinking that somehow the nastiness and venom of this race would miss me.

If you're traveling alone with kids, Italy makes it easy

Recently I took a solo trip to Italy with my daughter. Managing a young child while traveling abroad can be daunting (especially by yourself), but I found that Italy couldn't have been more child-friendly. So if you're looking for a place to go with your kids, Italy should be at the top of your list.

More: Why I love to travel without my husband

Family friendly

Italians adore children. I couldn’t make it halfway down the street with my daughter without being stopped and hearing “Ciao bella” or “Bellissima bambina.” Everyone wanted to talk to her and even kiss her, because apparently kissing stranger’s babies is completely acceptable in Italy. She was given special treatment everywhere we went. Each bakery or restaurant we went in, she was either given a cookie or piece of bread. We were also upgraded to bigger rooms in all our hotels to accommodate her. It is safe to say my little girl was spoiled beyond belief during our travels. Long story short, Italians make the extra effort to help families with children. If you take your kids to Italy, prepare for them to be spoiled!

Mangia, mangia!

The food! What kids don’t want to eat pizza, pasta and gelato every day? Italy is a picky eater's paradise. Need I say more?

More: Forget TSA, it's the checked baggage that makes flying a nightmare

Piazzas galore

One thing I really enjoyed about Italy was the array of piazzas. If you aren’t familiar with a piazza, also known as a plaza, it is essentially large open area outside within the city that is blocked off to cars. Usually there is a fountain, shops and restaurants in and around the piazza. Piazzas were great resting points during the days of non-stop walking. I could let my daughter run around without worrying about her getting into trouble. We also stumbled across many garden and playgrounds, and a beautiful carousel in Florence!

A variety of environments

Italy is a beautiful country with an abundance of different environments. Mountains, beaches, big cities, and countryside: you name it, Italy has it. This gives you and your children the opportunity to have a vacation that everyone will enjoy. Spend your travels exploring the diversity of the lands to get a real feel for the country.

Tip: Visit a smaller town with a less hectic itinerary in between big city destinations. This will give everyone a break from the hustle and bustle of constant sightseeing, and ensure no one gets worn out. I absolutely loved the Cinque Terre region for our getaway between big cities.

Kate Middleton attended a movie premiere in a *gasp* high-slit dress

The former Kate Middleton's style is evolving.

More: Kate Middleton may be a princess, but she can't do anything she pleases

The Duchess of Cambridge stepped out at the London premiere of A Street Cat Named Bob over the weekend, where she wore something a little unexpected for her: a dress with a slit that went all the way up to her thigh.

The $500 crocheted maxi dress by Self Portrait was definitely stunning. But it was also a pretty major departure from Kate's normally conservative style. So did Kate get any backlash for showing off a whole lot of leg?

Definitely not.

If you want to rock the same style as the duchess, you can can't, because the dress sold out pretty much immediately after she wore it. More proof of just how much we love this new, sexier side of Kate.

The designer of the dress and founder of Self Portrait, Han Chong, told The Telegraph that he never thought he would see the Duchess of Cambridge wearing one of his pieces.

"It's a proud moment for me as designer to find Kate in one of my designs," he said. "She's such an elegant woman and it's a dream to see. She looks incredible!"

What Corey Feldman has survived over the past 40 years will break your heart

Corey Feldman's career stretches back over 40 years, but the details of what the actor and musician has survived during that time will break your heart.

1975: Acting debut

Corey Feldman McDonald's commercial

Corey Feldman McDonald's commercial

Feldman made a big splash in the acting world when he starred in a McDonald's commercial at just 3 years old. The ad won a prestigious Clio Award and ran for eight years. Feldman said this is his first memory, and it catapulted him into Hollywood's consciousness at the hands of less-than-stellar parents. As he told A.V. Club, "Well, at 3 years old, kids don't really find their way into anything or make any type of decisions. At 3 years old, it's called child slavery, and that's what I endured: Child slavery. So I was a slave child who got very fortunate in his early career… or I guess my parents got very fortunate, I should say."

By the age of 10, he had shot more than 100 commercials.

Late '70s: Sitcom breakthrough

Corey Feldman Madame

Corey Feldman Madame

Feldman begins a long string of sitcom appearances on shows like Eight Is Enough, Alice, Madame, The Bad News Bears, Mork & Mindy and The Love Boat, among others. In his memoir Coreygraphy, he says his parents used his earnings to buy a new house and expensive cars and are at best neglectful — at worst, abusive.

1980: Bad news for The Bad News Bears

Corey Feldman Bad News Bears

Corey Feldman Bad News Bears

The Bad News Bears is canceled and Feldman must return to public school. He will not be allowed a work permit unless he maintains high grades, and his parents escalate their alleged abuse as a way to keep him motivated. In his memoir, he accuses his mother of force-feeding him diet pills and beating him with a curtain rod. He claims his father would beat him until the belt broke, then get another belt.

1981: The family breaks up

Feldman's parents split by the time his younger brother Devin is born in 1981, and he says his mother's abuse escalates while her mental health deteriorates. At one point, she even threatens him with a homemade nose job with a pair of scissors and a syringe.

1983: Spielberg comes through

Corey Feldman Gremlins

After an anticipated part in E.T.: The Extra-Terrestrial is cut, director Steven Spielberg promises him a role in his next film, and he comes through with a part in the ‘80s classic Gremlins. The movie is released in 1984, along with his next film, Friday the 13th: The Final Chapter.

1984: Cast in The Goonies

Feldman begins filming the childhood epic adventure The Goonies. Just weeks before casting is announced, he says he tried to kill himself for the first time. He was 12.

Corey Feldman Stand By Me

Michael Jackson visits the set of The Goonies, and he and Feldman begin a 15-year-long friendship. Feldman later denies Jackson ever sexually abused him. Filming begins on Stand By Me, where Feldman works with River Phoenix, Jerry O'Connell, Wil Wheaton and Kiefer Sutherland. Feldman calls the role of the abused and bitter Teddy the closest to his own life. He smokes pot for the first time while on location with River Phoenix, marking his first foray into drugs. He soon discovers his mother's stash of cocaine and tries that too. He contemplates suicide for a second time after being bullied at school, holding his grandfather's gun to his head.

Corey Feldman The Lost Boys

Feldman begins filming arguably his most famous movie with Corey Haim, The Lost Boys. While on set, Haim tells Feldman he was raped by a male industry insider. Feldman introduces him to child star manager Martin Weiss, who sexually abuses Haim.

1987: Fame hits hard

Feldman quickly finds himself surrounded by so-called friends who help him get hooked on drugs. One, an employee of his father/manager whom he gives the pseudonym "Ron Crimson" in his memoir, began sexually abusing him while he was under the influence. Another older friend, "Ralph Kaufman," attempted the same. Feldman fires his father as his manager and files for legal emancipation from both parents after finding out they have spent the million dollars he earned during his entire career, leaving him with just $40,000. His father demands that amount as a payoff.

1988: The Coreys continue to grow

License to Drive trailer

Feldman and Haim's second movie together, License to Drive, earns them both the Young Artist Award for Best Young Actor in a Motion Picture Comedy or Fantasy. Their third buddy flick, Dream A Little Dream, is released the following year.

1989: First marriage

Feldman marries fellow actor Vanessa Marcil in Las Vegas after dating just a few months. They never actually lived together and divorced in 1993.

1990: Legal troubles

Feldman is arrested twice for heroin possession. During his first arrest, he was found with 25 balloons of heroin and cocaine in his car. The second, in September, resulted from cops finding two balloons containing one-third of a gram of heroin. While in rehab, he claims that Dave Navarro and Perry Farrell help him shoot up heroin his cousin smuggled in. After a third arrest (for driving with a suspended license), he goes to a live-in rehab with little contact with the outside world for nine months.

1995: Relapse

Feldman finds himself abusing pain meds after two minor surgeries, then quickly spirals back into a full-fledged relapse. In his memoir, he claims that after losing his home and his car, he had a come-to-Jesus moment alone one night and that, combined with curing his kidney stones, got him to clean his act up for good.

1998: Musical awakening

Corey Feldman Truth Movement performance

Corey Feldman Truth Movement performance

Feldman forms the band Truth Movement and releases an album of "dark, intensely personal" songs including a "suicide note set to music," as he describes in his book.

2001: A hello and a goodbye

Feldman meets Susie Sprague at an LA club on her 19th birthday. His friendship with Michael Jackson falls apart in the wake of 9/11. As he describes in Coreyography, Jackson seems unjustifiably paranoid that Feldman is going to write a book about him, despite Feldman repeatedly defending him in the press against the molestation charges. They never speak again.

2002: A second chance

Corey Feldman Surreal Life wedding

Feldman and Sprague get engaged on Valentine's Day. He begins filming The Surreal Life, his first entry into reality TV, which he describes as the "single worst professional experience" of his life. He and Sprague are married on the show in a wedding officiated by MC Hammer.

2004: Becoming a father

The couple's son Zen is born eight weeks early; Feldman has to leave to film a movie in Bulgaria three days later.

2005: Double-crossed

Investigative journalist Martin Bashir proposes a 20/20 interview as a retrospective of Feldman's career. By the time it aired, Bashir billed it as "Child actor Corey Feldman speaks out against Michael Jackson."

2006: The Two Coreys

Feldman and Haim reunite for one of their final projects: a semi-scripted reality show about their friendship. Haim cleans himself up for the show but quickly begins spiraling back again. Feldman secures him a small role in Lost Boys 2, but Haim is fired.

2007: A shocking revelation

The Two Coreys rape accusation

The Two Coreys rape accusation

While filming the first episode of The Two Coreys Season 2, Haim lets loose on Feldman, accusing him of allowing repeated sexual abuse by their so-called friends. Haim is fired from Lost Boys 2 for a second time, and The Two Coreys is canceled after Season 2 wraps.

2009: Another heartbreak

Feldman and Sprague divorce. He grieves the death of Michael Jackson, having never reconciled after their strange 2001 falling out.

2010: Haim's tragic death

Feldman's world is shaken yet again when Corey Haim dies of pneumonia at his mother's apartment in Burbank. In the wake of his death, Feldman becomes more vocal about Hollywood's rampant pedophilia.

2013: Coreyography

Feldman publishes his memoir, Coreyography, detailing a childhood of physical, emotional, financial and sexual abuse at the hands of his parents and industry insiders.

2016: Today show bullies

Corey Feldman Today Show

Corey Feldman Today Show

Feldman and his band Corey's Angels make an appearance on Today, causing him to be mercilessly bullied on social media. His fans immediately step in to defend him, and Today has him back a month later to address the haters. "We are at a time right now where the world needs to focus really on peace and love and tolerance," he says.

While preparing this piece, I asked Feldman himself on Twitter what the most pivotal point of his life was. His answer was very enlightening and uplifting — but maybe not surprising coming from someone who has survived as much as he has.

Since his film debut, Feldman has made over 60 movies and has had a release nearly every year since 1979, with few exceptions. Despite all the ups and downs, he has never stopped working. Hopefully, the future holds a lot more light for him than the past has.

For any of you who are still 'shipping Taylor Swift and Drake, I have good news and bad news.

More: Taylor Swift has returned to her country roots — onstage at the CMAs

The good news? They're definitely still hanging out, as evidenced by the very cryptic photo Drake posted of Swift on his Instagram.

The photo shows the two of them hanging out (at Drake's birthday party maybe?) and the caption says only, "Is that velvet?" with a flower emoji. If anyone knows how to decode that, get at us.

The bad news, however, is that they both still deny that there's anything more than a friendship between them, and sources close to them are backing that up.

More: Taylor Swift used her A-list celeb contacts to transform into Deadpool

"They are not dating or hooking up," an insider told E! News this week, adding, "They are both purely friends."

That's a little contradictory to the reports we've been hearing about all the time the two of them have been spending together. As TMZ reported, Swift and her squad went to Drake's birthday party, where he introduced Swift to his mom and allegedly gave her the "VIP treatment."

"At one point Drake and Taylor were seen near the DJ together talking, his arm over her shoulder for a minute like a real friend moment. It looked like they were talking about something deep," an onlooker said of their cozy behavior at the bash.

The other thing we know is that regardless of their relationship status, Swift and Drake are collaborating. A source told E! News that they're working on at least one song together, and that it's "very catchy."

"The music they have been working on is different," the insider said. "They've both been having a great time in the studio."

Now that we're in the middle of fall TV, we've had a chance to get a feel for what the latest lineup has to offer. The new shows have hopefully found their footing, and the old ones are getting us hooked for another season.

Or have they?

We've all been there, super excited about tuning into a new show only to discover it's truly awful. You give it the three-episode test and it just keeps getting worse, leaving you wondering how it ever got picked up in the first place. Or maybe you're tuning into your favorite old show only to find out it didn't just jump the shark this season, it got Sharknadoed.

And while the networks may be canceling shows left and right this year, they've still let a lot of them drag on far too long. Just because the fan base might be loyal, doesn't mean the show isn't awful now.

It's OK to admit it: You're plumb sick of holiday turkey, right?

It seems like sacrilege to say aloud, but you're not the only one who is tired of cooking up the same old bird year after year. Get a little crazy with some of these turkey alternatives when you put together your feast this Thanksgiving — you might just start a new family holiday tradition!

1. Tofurkey

Tofurky is a soy-based vegetable protein that is often eaten as links, sausages and burger patties, but they also have a delicious Tofurky roast that is stuffed with wild rice and served with gravy, so vegetarians can enjoy the holiday festivities too. I Love Vegan offers up some useful tips for cooking a Tofurky roast to perfection.

2. Surf and turf

Skip the poultry altogether and opt for a heartier, more tropical-inspired main dish this Thanksgiving with a surf and turf. Surf and turf, which consists of a serving of beef and lobster, gives your family the best of both worlds. It's a little more costly, but will certainly lend to a much more elegant affair.

3. Lasagna

Nothing brings a family together like a big plate of lasagna. The soft noodles, hearty sauce and gooey, melted cheese just warm your heart and soul with each bite. If you're not an expert foodie, don't worry, lasagna is one of the easiest dishes to prepare and some versions take around 30 minutes start to finish. Plus, you can customize your flavors to what your family likes. This version is jazzed up with a little spicy Italian sausage, meaty mushrooms and just a touch of red wine.

4. Cornish game hens

Image: Kitchen Confidante/Pinterest

Want to really impress your MIL this Thanksgiving? Serve each of your dinner guests their own personal Cornish game hen for a real "wow" factor. Despite its name, game hens aren't actually game meats, but just immature (5 weeks or less) chickens that weigh about 2 pounds. Game hens fetch a higher price than most chickens, though, so expect to pay a little more for your menu. Be sure to check out these recipes for Cornish game hens.

5. Rotisserie chicken

If game hens are a little out of your price range, why not serve up a classic rotisserie chicken? You can roast a chicken the same way you would a turkey with your favorite herbs and seasoning, but in about one-quarter the time. Not only is chicken an easy dish to prepare, it's the most popular variety of poultry, so you'll satisfy everyone. Added bonus: A rotisserie chicken can cost up to 50 cents less per pound than a turkey.

6. Pork roast

Pork: It's the other white meat — and it's also one of the most versatile meats to cook, to boot. You can slow-roast the pork and slice it thin like you would turkey, slow cook it and shred it into pulled pork tacos or even serve pulled pork barbecue. This slow cooker brandy pork roast is ridiculously moist and tender. Take that, dry turkey!

Does your family prefer fish to red or white meats? Then by all means, serve up salmon in place of your turkey this year. Salmon is a very mild fish, so it's easy to pair with a ton of different sauces without overpowering your senses. This slow-cooked salmon with fennel and coriander is bursting with flavor.

8. Ham

Think ham is just for Christmas dinner? Think again! Ham is a great option for your Thanksgiving dinner since it, like turkey, is relatively easy to prepare, pairs well with just about any kind of side dish and can feed up to 12 people with just one cut. Plus, the leftovers make for a pretty mean sandwich! In addition, ham is often cheaper per pound than most frozen turkeys. No. 2 Pencil's slow cooker ham with maple brown sugar glaze pairs perfectly with candied yams.

Kim Kardashian West is still keeping a very low profile after she was bound, gagged and robbed at gunpoint in her Paris apartment last month.

She hasn't yet returned to social media, and public sightings of her have been few and far between — she doesn't seem to have left her house much other than to quietly attend a couple of husband Kanye West's concerts.

So it's a big surprise to see Kardashian West not only out in public, but smiling in a photo on social media once again. It turns out that all it takes is a good cause to get Kardashian West back in the public eye these days, and taking Alton Sterling's son, Cameron, out for his 16th birthday was the perfect opportunity.

Alton Sterling was shot and killed by police in Louisiana in early July as he was selling CDs outside of a convenience store. His killing sparked protests in the state and prompted Kardashian West to write an open letter in support of the Black Lives Matter movement.

"I want my children to grow up knowing that their lives matter," she wrote, "I do not ever want to have to teach my son to be scared of the police, or tell him that he has to watch his back because the people we are told to trust — the people who 'protect and serve' — may not be protecting and serving him because of the color of his skin."

Cameron is the oldest of Alton Sterling's children. His lawyer tweeted a photo of him with the Wests to thank them for helping with his birthday celebration.
