So, Teresa Giudice doesn't believe Donald Trump's accusers

Teresa Giudice, I'm gonna stop you right there.

More: There may be a Clinton supporter in the Duggar family after all

The Real Housewives of New Jersey star, who also appeared on Celebrity Apprentice, seems to think the best way to show support for her former boss, Republican presidential nominee Donald Trump, is to bash the women who have accused him of sexual assault.

For background, Trump was caught on a hot mic in 2005 bragging about being able to sexually assault women because of his fame. Since then, nearly a dozen women have come forward to share the stories of the times Trump assaulted them, but still there are people who don't believe them. Because rape culture.

More: Adult film actress Jessica Drake says Donald Trump assaulted her

Giudice is one of those people.

"If a man touched me, I would come out with it right away. I wouldn't wait 'til he was trying to be president and then come out with it," she said in a recent interview with Extra. "When people come out, they only want their 15 minutes of fame."

How many times are we going to need to go over this, fam? There are myriad reasons that women wait to report sexual assault, and none of them have to do with getting famous.

But I am a woman, so I know some people out there won't take my word for it. I present a man/former police officer's thoughts on the subject:

"We know from research and our own experience that sexual assault and rape are the most underreported crimes. And part of the reason they’re underreported is that victims are concerned about whether they’re going to be believed or not. That prevents a lot of folks from coming forward, as well as the trauma of the experience," Tom Tremblay, who worked for decades as a police officer in Vermont, told Vox. "Victims may wait days, weeks, months, years, decades. When one victim comes forward, it’s not at all uncommon to see other victims come forward, who are thinking, ‘Well, they came forward; now it’s not just my word.’ And then we see the next victim says the same thing."

RHONY's Heather Thomson & Monica Lewinsky could have gotten their own spinoff

Andy Cohen is probably shaking his head today over what could have been the perfect Bravo reality show — former Real Housewives of New York City star Heather Thomson rehabilitating Monica Lewinsky’s image. In a recent interview with The Tomorrow Show, Thomson shared her idea with host Keven Undergaro.

More: Monica Lewinsky reveals suicidal thoughts over Clinton affair

“Monica Lewinsky had come out with her Vanity Fair [article in 2014] and I was on Access Hollywood… Billy [Bush] was like, She can’t get a job is what I’m hearing,'” Thomson said. “There’s no way I believe that for a hot second.”

As the founder of the shape-wear undergarment company, Yummie by Heather Thomson, she decided to spring an idea into action when it came to Lewinsky.

“Well, I’ll hire her,” she explained in the interview. “I have a company, I have a multimillion dollar company. I’ll give her a job.”

More: Bethenny Frankel's topless movie role from the '90s still haunts her

That’s when Thomson went on a quest to locate Lewinsky to help her get past the Bill Clinton scandal. She had LuAnn de Lesseps connect her with Dorinda Medley before she was a cast member on RHONY.

“Dorinda jetted me in my footsteps and said she is not looking for a job,” explained Thomson. “[She said,] ‘Trust me, she's fine. You have a legitimate company, and you're coming out of the goodness of your heart to lift someone up.’ "

More: RHONY has reportedly signed on a new star & things just got really exciting

You know Cohen is foaming at the mouth to still make this job offer happen. It would be a ratings bonanza for Bravo and Thomson would be “holla-ing” all over New York for getting Lewinsky to join her team.

Alas, neither the show nor the job will ever happen. Even Thomson has given up on the idea.

“It sounded like a good idea for awhile, but then I moved on,” she said. “But I was gonna give her a job."

The Kennedys would be so proud of Miley Cyrus' recent stoned performance

Well, if there's one thing Miley Cyrus isn't shy about, it's her love of the marijuana.

More: Miley Cyrus & Liam Hemsworth's home life is so far from what you'd expect

And she was letting her stoner flag fly on Sunday night, when she joined all the celebs paying tribute to Bill Murray as he received this year's Mark Twain Prize for American Humor.

Cyrus was in good company at the event, where some of Murray's former co-stars and colleagues, including Sigourney Weaver and Steve Martin, made speeches and presentations in his honor. But Cyrus really took her appreciation to another level by partaking a little too heavily in the drug that Murray loves too.

"I fucked it up... Sorry guys. I got too stoned," Cyrus admitted to the crowd after forgetting the lyrics in the middle of her Murray-themed rendition of "My Way."

She added afterward, "I smoked too much and forgot."

Well, at least she knew her audience. Murray was more than understanding about the flub, yelling at her from the audience, "This is happening right now in Washington, D.C., the 51st state in the union."

At least Cyrus' beau, Liam Hemsworth, seems to have found peace with her crazy antics since they broke up and got re-engaged. Something tells me this is exactly the kind of thing he wouldn't have approved of back in the early Disney days of their relationship when they were both so young and innocent.

I tandem nurse a 2-year-old and a 5-year-old and you can too!

It’s 7 p.m. We have just finished dinner and are brushing our teeth. My 5-year-old son, J, and I sit down on the couch together. I read him several books. With each book he leans closer to me until his head is resting on my shoulder. Finally he says, “Boobie and go to sleep.” I carry him to the bedroom, we lie down together and he nurses to sleep. His face changes from the lively growing boy I see all day to the peaceful, angelic look I saw the day he was born.

I leave the bedroom and meet my husband in the hallway who is carrying my 2-year-old son, E, in a baby carrier. I scoop E out of the carrier and bring him into the bedroom next to J. I lie down with him and nurse him to sleep. His face resembles his brother’s as he falls asleep.

More: Your vagina might not feel normal after kids, but you're not alone

This has been our routine for as long as I can remember. Breastfeeding has been a part of my relationship with my children from the day they were born. It has taken on countless forms and phases as the years have passed — the newborn marathon nursing sessions, the twisty toddler moves, battles with clogged ducts and sore nipples, the biting phase, the nursing-all-night phase, the distracted thinking-he-might-wean phase. But it remains strong and constant. I am not counting down the days for it be over. Instead, I balance my needs with my children’s needs until we find a new normal. So far, each phase has included breastfeeding. I know it won’t last much longer.

Many people wonder how I can breastfeed a 5-year-old, let alone both boys at the same time. When my first son was born, I struggled getting started with breastfeeding. It was a painful time. I was full of anxiety and despair that my body was failing me. I was advised to supplement with formula from day one. My baby grew more and more fussy at my breast. He preferred the fast flow of the bottle. The more he drank from the bottle, the less milk my body made. I pushed through the struggles by reading everything I could find about breastfeeding. I contacted a lactation consultant who helped us get off the formula and exclusively breastfeed. I thought I would breastfeed for six months or maybe a year. This is our cultural norm, after all. But when it started working I couldn’t imagine forcing him to stop. We had worked so hard to get here.

I found mom friends, many who were breastfeeding older babies and children. I learned that it is normal for a child to breastfeed past infancy, sometimes until 7 years old, as has been the case throughout history and in other cultures. I learned that the World Health Organization recommends breastfeeding until “up to 2 years of age or beyond.” I learned that breastfeeding while pregnant is a safe option. I learned that sometimes, cultural norms and biological norms are two very different things.

When I became pregnant with my second son, I had no question that I would continue to breastfeed my first son. My older son would continue to gain from the emotional and nutritional benefits of breastfeeding and my newborn son would get all of the nutrients he would need to thrive. My oldest son was not ready to wean. I knew pushing him to wean before my second son arrived would cause him great distress, and although many women choose to wean at various times, it wasn’t the right decision for my family. With the drastic change our family was about to undergo with a new baby, I knew breastfeeding would continue to be one of J's greatest supports.

J nursed until the day I gave birth to his little brother. He latched on for about 10 seconds that day, but he was mostly cautious of the new baby and kept his distance. In the coming weeks, he wanted to be on my lap at my breast just like E. I held E in my arm at one breast and J sat on my lap at the other. J struggled with having a new baby in the home taking up my time, but when they were both nursing, they were content. Two boobs and two boys worked nicely for finding peace in the chaos of a family in transition.

More: There's light at the end of the tunnel for moms of picky eaters

Now that they are bigger they can both sit on their bottoms, but I rarely breastfeed them both at the same time anymore. It's too much moving and touching for me. J only nurses to sleep at night. He asks during the day sometimes, but I mostly say, "no." He's forgetting how to latch and it feels uncomfortable. Sometimes he rolls his eyes at me, but he usually just walks away. E nurses frequently. Whenever he comes near me he feels the need to latch on. He spends much of his night latched on as well. I get more sleep allowing him to do this, but I do look forward to sleeping on my stomach.

The majority of our breastfeeding happens when going to sleep, sitting around, someone fell down or they are sick. Otherwise, they spend their time running, jumping, playing and begging for hot dogs and ice cream. Breastfeeding solves most issues. I feel like it makes my life easier. It's my secret weapon.

Some people feel it's harmful to breastfeed an older child. They say the child will not learn to be independent or suffer long-term psychological harm. As a social worker, I assure everyone that what’s harmful to children is not keeping them close. "Extended" breastfeeding benefits a child's health, intellectual development, social development and mental development. Many people feel breast milk loses its nutritional value at a certain age. But research has shown that breastmilk has great nutritional value for as long as our body makes it. Children do stop breastfeeding when they are ready, and it is long before they go to college.

We've got the hook up on unexpected — yet yummy — chocolate flavor combos

Yes, it's totally possible to enjoy a square of chocolate all on its own — but why do that when there are so many crazy-delectable food combinations that complement your favorite sweet perfectly?

This handy guide will teach you exactly how to pair your favorite treats with the right chocolate.

White chocolate

Image: Giphy

Pairing white chocolate can be challenging because of its delicate flavors, but that just means it creates some of the most unique and versatile combinations.

There's always good old-fashioned white chocolate and strawberries, but to get a little fancy, whip up a white chocolate soufflé and add some caviar. We're talking almost as much caviar as you have white chocolate. This scientifically proven (yes, we're serious) flavor combo powerhouse may sound strange, but it's a darling of molecular gastronomists.

More: Chocolate: A guide to using your favorite baking ingredient

Here are some other foods that pair amazingly with white chocolate:

  • Sea salt caramel
  • Agave nectar
  • Maple syrup
  • Lemongrass
  • Pink peppercorn
  • Cardamom
  • Saffron
  • Sea salt
  • Wasabi
  • Lemon
  • Lime
  • Orange
  • Cranberry
  • Blueberries
  • Macadamia nuts
  • Cashews
  • Hazelnuts
  • Brie
  • Wisconsin mixed-milk cheese
  • Dragon well tea

  • Colombian coffee
  • Costa Rican coffee
  • Yemeni coffee
  • Bourbon barrel-aged tripel (beer)
  • Orange muscat
  • Vintage port
  • Chocolate stout

Milk chocolate

For milk chocolate, it really is better to seek out those deep, European-style milk chocolates.

To get on the bacon bandwagon, thread some raw bacon onto wooden skewers and bake them up until they're nice and crispy. Temper some milk chocolate (with a glob of shortening if desired) in a double boiler and use a pastry brush to coat the bacon with the chocolate. Sprinkle it with crushed peanuts or walnuts, crystallized ginger, grated Gruyère or chopped goji berries and place them on a wax paper-lined sheet to refrigerate until they're set.

Or if you're looking for something a little simpler, chop up some quality milk chocolate and sprinkle it over a big scoop of orange sorbet as a refresher after dinner.

  • Kenyan coffee
  • Sumatran coffee
  • Yemeni coffee
  • Ethiopian coffee

  • Raspberry beers

Dark chocolate

Dark chocolate — like semisweet and bittersweet — is often considered the most versatile of the chocolates because it's less sweet. This translates into an amazing contrast with sweet or tangy foods and bolder flavors — like balsamic — serve to bring out the richness of the confection.

This is a no-brainer, but serving dark chocolate up with a berry-streaked whipped cream and a glass of pinot noir makes for a jaw-dropping flavor profile. Or to get a little crazy with dark chocolate, sprinkle in a bit of black pepper to add a heat and complexity the next time you make brownies or chocolate cake.

We compared Starbucks drinks with DIY Verismo drinks and learned a few things

When we were offered the chance to try out the new Verismo V system by Starbucks, we kind of had to say "yes." Play our own barista — why not? So we ordered up some pumpkin spice and chocolate sauces and fired up the handy milk frother that came with the Verismo and set about making some of our favorite drinks.

Then we picked up the real things from Starbucks to compare.

More: Behold, Starbucks bestows upon the people Pumpkin Spice Latte K-Cups

First, at the risk of doing their advertising for them, we really liked the Verismo. It sets up easily and it's so freakin' quiet. Seriously, it's a purr compared to your typical K-cup machine roar.

But how does it taste? Our totally unscientific panel came up with mixed results.

Pike's Place Roast Coffee: Surprise! Verismo won. Starbucks' coffee was deemed "brown water" by one discerning taster, who found the homemade version more flavorful if also bitter (in a good way).

Espresso: The Starbucks-brewed espresso had a slight edge over the Verismo, mostly for its complexity of flavor. The Verismo seemed more one-dimensional, though without the acrid taste you usually get from K-cup drinks.

Mocha: A tie. This came down to personal preference. The quality of coffee was the same in both cases, but some like a sweeter, more chocolaty mocha while others like theirs more subtle.

PSL: Another tie. Again, this came down to personal preference, though one taster said she thought the homemade Verismo PSL tasted more naturally pumpkin spice than Starbucks'.

More: How to make espresso drinks at home without the fancy machines

So what did we learn? For the most part, the Verismo makes a quality cup. But what stands out to me is the way it lets you customize your flavored coffee drinks your way.

Speaking for myself, I like the idea of ordering a PSL or a salted caramel macchi-whatsit on a frosty-cold morning. But I hate how sweet those drinks all are. Like, beyond toothaching. They're verging on can't-taste-anything-else-but-sugar sweet. It's not even the health issue for me. I just don't have a sugary palate. And yes, you can ask the barista at Starbucks to use half the syrup, but then you also have half the flavor. Having a DIY Starbucks situation at home, on the other hand, lets you experiment with different syrups and flavorings to come up with the drink of your dreams, the one no one (for some reason!) believes Americans want to drink.

I should also mention the milk frother works with all kinds of milks, not just full-fat dairy. And it's absolutely fabulous.

More: 20 boozy coffee drinks guaranteed to perk you up

That said, this coffee playset for grownups is going to cost you. Here's the breakdown:

  • Verismo V Brewer, $149 (SRP)
  • Verismo Milk Frother, $59 (SRP)
  • Verismo Pods, $9.95 – $12.95 (SRP)

Not as much as the Breville Infuser ($500 SRP), but still, maybe this is one to put on your Santa wish list.

If you use both the brewer and the frother every time for an entire year, that would add up to about 57 cents per cup. Pods cost just under a dollar per cup. So that's just under $2 per cup of frothy, milky coffee drinks. That's a deal compared with the café versions, though still very much a luxury. But maybe someone's been a very, very good girl this year.

8 things moms say that totally gaslight their kids

$
0
0

We often hear about boyfriends or girlfriends gaslighting their significant others by saying things and denying their feelings in a way that actually begins making them question their own sanity. But the young men and women who gaslight often become the same dads and moms who use this effective and disastrous form of psychological torture to maintain the control and power they so desperately associate with their worth.

Parents who suffer from narcissistic personality disorder, many of whom remain clueless that they even have a sense of entitlement and feed off of attention and drama as ways to feel important, are often the same folks who put their kids through gaslighting hell. At the root of it all, they'll do almost anything to be right, maintain their influence over the people in their home and to ensure they are the center of their kids' universes.

No matter how much it may not seem like it at times, kids listen when their parents speak. One of a gaslighter's most potent weapons is her words — and these eight classic phrases are often used by a parent in an attempt to gaslight her child so that she feels better about herself:

1. "You're just being sensitive": Because the narcissistic parent has a lot of trouble empathizing with her child, it's a lot easier to label her kid "sensitive" and call it a day than to actually have to address the fact that her little one may be reacting for a perfectly logical reason — that perfect reason being that she feels an emotion and has a right to it. Period.

2. "You owe me an apology": It makes no difference if the parent started an insane fight over something small and then exploded and called her child a name. At the end of the day, a parent who gaslights insists on her kid apologizing for all grievances, because she's the parent, and it's her way or the highway.

3. "That never happened, and you're making it up": Selective memory, anyone? The gaslighting parent has no problem dictating to her child, verbatim, what he said to her that was so hurtful, but if her child insists on telling his version of things, she'll simply deny it ever happened and possibly accuse him of lying.

4. "I don't want to hear this anymore": The parent who gaslights always has the honor of deciding when a conversation has ended and when her child's thoughts and feelings are no longer welcome.

5. "Are you seriously angry about that?": As if there is no rational reason her child should be mad that Mom decided at the last minute to not take her to the park as promised. A kid who constantly hears this from a parent grows up doubting his right to assert himself.

6. "You're not really going to wear that, are you?": You disapprove of your child's wardrobe and wish she would stop wearing peasant blouses or dyeing her hair orange. Instead of accepting her for her choices, you leave that little question lingering in her head to make her feel like she's crazy for wanting to wear something so obviously hideous or so unflattering on her.

7. "Stop crying": Other ways parents stifle their kids include telling them to wipe that pout off their face and to toughen up — usually not because they want them to become strong individuals, but because they can't handle their kids' emotions or the feeling that they have somehow failed them.

8. "It's not always about you": Nope, it isn't. And that's because 99 percent of the time, it's always about the parent who gaslights, leaving no room for the child and his emotions to exist.

Lady Gaga & Taylor Kinney may still be writing their American love story

Lady Gaga and Taylor Kinney seemed like they were the perfect couple. His straightlaced, clean cut image was the ideal complement to Gaga's artsy demeanor, and the two just always seemed so dang happy with eachother  — which is why we were so heartbroken when they ended their five year relationship back in July of this year.

But fret not Gaga/Kinney shippers, apparently there still might be hope for a reunion on the horizon.

More: Lady Gaga's heartbreaking post on Taylor Kinney could actually be good news

"Gaga and Taylor are talking every day about giving it a second chance," a source recently told Life & Style magazine. "He has missed Gaga terribly. He wants to make things work... They both feel like their love is worth it."

Though some rumors state distance was a huge factor in Lady Gaga and Kinney's breakup, the Life & Style source says Kinney actually broke things off because he felt suffocated by Gaga — and the two still have a long way to go working out issues before their relationship will be solid.

We find the fact Kinney felt Gaga was smothering him pretty funny, considering she posted a video seven months back in which he is literally clinging to her like a howler monkey.

Even so, apparently Gaga is willing to work on her issues if it means preserving Kinney's love.

More: Lady Gaga fans are so wrong about 'Perfect Illusion' dissing Taylor Kinney

"Gaga told Taylor that she knows that she has trust issues and she admits she needs to give him his space," the source said. "Gaga would constantly call Taylor on the set of Chicago Fire, and even made friends with crew members so she could basically spy on him. He got fed up... She told Taylor that she’s making sure she’s 100 percent ready to be in a mature, loving relationship without the jealousy and control issues."

Raven-Symoné is leaving The View, but for a very a good reason. The actress, musician and — until fairly recently — talk show co-host is starring in a spinoff of the wildly successful Disney Channel TV show That's So Raven. Symoné played a charming teenager who had visions, allowing her to see into the future. That's So Raven was one of Disney Channel's highest-rated shows, and is still a fan favorite, despite the last episode airing in 2007.

Symoné's opinions caused quite a bit of controversy on The View and on Twitter. In 2015, Symoné tweeted, "I'm not about to hire you if your name is Watermelondrea." Cue the backlash.

But despite some of her questionable moments in the past couple of years, it's safe to say that all is forgiven, because That's So Raven fans are beyond excited.

Why Pitch is the perfect TV series to be watching with my son

$
0
0

When I was a kid, my brothers would gather in my parents’ room to watch TV together. Watching shows like Happy Days, Laverne and Shirley, Family Ties and The Wonder Years with my family are some of my happiest childhood memories. It was an easy way to spend time together after our long days at work or school.

Today there seem to be fewer “family” television shows, especially if you are the parent of a child from 7-13 years old. I don’t want to watch a lot of their kid’s shows and many of the shows on in prime time have inappropriate story lines or language for family viewing.

That is why I was so excited when my 13-year old son suggested we watch a new show called Pitch. The main character of the show is Ginny Baker, the fictional first woman baseball player in Major Leagues. Ginny (Kylie Bunbury) is a rookie pitcher for the San Diego Padres. Being the first to break the gender barrier in professional baseball, Ginny faces a lot of struggles as well as triumphs.

Here's why Pitch is so perfect for families:

1. It features an awesome lead

Bunbury is terrific as Ginny. She is a great mix of tough as nails but still vulnerable to critics and her own inner insecurities. You can’t help but root for her.

2. There are faces you'll recognize

It took me about halfway through the first show to finally identify the actor portraying Padre catcher Mike Lawson. Is that really Zach Morris of Saved by the Bell fame underneath that dark, scruffy beard? Why yes it is. And he is not the only beloved 80’s TV actor to star: Kevin Arnold’s dad in The Wonder Years, Dan Lauria, plays Padres manager Al Luongo.

3. Sports bring us together

My son loves sports, so what better than a TV drama that is set in the world of professional baseball? When he heard it was a TV show about a baseball player, he immediately wanted to check it out.

4. But it's not just about sports

You don’t have to love or even understand baseball to enjoy the show. While there are plenty of scenes that take play on the diamond and in the dugout, the heart of the show is about people. It’s about how people react to Ginny (other players, fans, managers, family) as she breaks the glass ceiling and enters a world where no woman has competed before.

5. It has a great message

While Ginny Baker is a fictional character, the idea that a woman might compete in the major leagues is an important one. I embrace the opportunity to watch a show where a woman breaks barriers and competes alongside her male peers. I especially embrace being able to watch a show with this theme alongside my son, and not have to worry about foul language or nudity making the show uncomfortable or inappropriate. To be able to portray this positive message while entertaining (and not preaching) is what makes Pitch the home run hit of the TV season.

How to cook a real Thanksgiving dinner in your tiny little kitchen

$

So you've finally got the cooking chops to host your first Thanksgiving. The one problem? Your kitchen is actually tinier than the closet in your college dorm room.

Sure, it'll be tough, but it doesn't have to be disaster. These tips will help you pull off a flawless Thanksgiving meal, even if your counter space consists of a cutting board placed over your sink basin.

1. Streamline your meal

I'm kind of a Thanksgiving overachiever, but honestly, this usually means I find myself deep in the weeds on the day of the big meal. Save yourself from my mistake by simplifying your feast.

You may feel the urge to make every single side dish you've saved from your mom's old Martha Stewart Living magazines, but trust me — you only need a few.

Try to stick to one green side, one orange side, one starch and the turkey. For dessert, one pie will do nicely — the world isn't going to end if Aunt Enid prefers pumpkin and you make pecan. Everyone will just be relieved that their host is having fun, not crying on the kitchen floor with pots and pans stacked in a dangerous maze around her.

More: Girl, you don't need an oven to cook your Thanksgiving turkey

2. Plan ahead

Planning things ahead of time will save you from so much stress. Schedule your time wisely throughout November, planning your shopping days well in advance, along with any food items that can be prepared ahead of time.

You also should take a look at your menu and figure out your day-of oven schedule. This will prevent any last-minute disasters — you don't want to end up burning your green bean casserole or making your guests wait until 10 p.m. for the turkey to finally be done.

3. Stick with basic tools

When creating your menu, pay attention to what kitchen appliances you'll need to use to create your meal. Food processor, stand mixer, immersion blender and rolling pin? That's a recipe for disaster in a small kitchen.

A cutting board, chef's knife, vegetable peeler and potato masher should see you through the day just fine. No space to roll out dough? Try a press-in tart dough or graham cracker crust for your pie. Simpler techniques will keep your kitchen calm and let the true flavor of autumn's bounty shine in all of your dishes — after all, does anyone really want cranberry foam on their sweet potato soufflé?

4. Maximize prep space

This might be a good time to invest in an over-the-sink cutting board. They also make burner-cover cutting boards, but those seem a little risky to me. I'm not keen on the idea of putting wood or bamboo over or directly on top of a burner that may have accidentally been left on. On the other hand, if you turned your dinner table, desk or dresser into a countertop, you wouldn't be the first person to do so.

5. Set up so cleanup is easier

Peel potatoes and carrots directly on a paper towel. Keep a bowl handy for scraps. Keep a garbage can out right next to your cutting board so you can scoop scraps directly inside. In other words, set up your prep station so cleanup is faster and easier.

6. Bus your station as you cook

Don't leave one big mess to clean up at the end. That will just make your kitchen feel smaller as the day goes on, debris-strewn walls closing in on you like Luke, Leia, Han and Chewie inside the Death Star trash compactor. Instead, clean up your workstation after each step before moving on so you're not always hunting for a clean, clear space.

7. Put your convection oven to use

If you happen to have a countertop convection oven instead of a full-size oven, congratulations. You'd be surprised at how much this baby can do. Remember to reduce your cooking temperature by 20 to 25 degrees, but do cook for the same amount of time as your recipes direct. Always use the lowest rack possible.

You may be able to get away with roasting a turkey in there. Buy a smaller bird and butterfly it. You may need to cook the legs and thighs separately. Since they take longer, roast those first, keep them covered so they stay warm and then roast the breast, bone removed, separately while the thighs rest. Tent the breast with foil so the skin doesn't brown too quickly.

8. Outsource

Sometimes you have to face the facts and realize you can't do everything. Sure, you're technically capable of cooking a 10-course feast, but will you actually survive the day if you put yourself through the ringer?

Thank God for the grocery store. Between the hot foods bar at your local Whole Foods, online resources and restaurants in your town, it's easier than ever to get other people do some of the cooking for you.

And there's no shame in the potluck game. Thanksgiving is all about community, right? If you're hosting the meal, someone is bound to ask, "Can I bring anything?" Now's your chance to actually take them up on their offer.

Either way, you'll free up some space in the kitchen so you can add a homemade touch to your semi-store-bought meal.

Tom Hanks isn't the only one who almost died on the Inferno set

Tom Hanks and Felicity Jones have been hard at work filming Inferno so fans can finally get their next Robert Langdon fix, and it turns out that the actors might have actually faced more danger than the famous Dan Brown character himself – watch what they have to say in the video below!

Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones on Inferno

Tom Hanks, Felicity Jones on Inferno

Hanks and Jones chatted with SheKnows about the various hijinks and injuries that went down on set — and pretty much no one escaped unscathed. In fact, Hanks says he got plumb knocked out while shooting a scene that didn't even make it past the cutting room floor.

"I get beat up a lot. Even Ron [Howard] cut out a conk on the head that knocked me out," Hanks told us of a particularly nasty scene that director Ron Howard cut from the film. "We came back for three days of shooting in order to grab some stuff, and I said, ‘What happened to the conk in the head I got in the reservoir?’ He said, ‘Uh, nah that didn’t quite work, we’re not doing the conk on the head anymore.’ I said, ‘Well, thanks, that could have saved a day of pain.’"

Jones was also once the cause of Hanks' pain — she drove him into a wall while filming a car chase scene.

"It was my first time driving an A-list movie star and nearly killing him," she explained to Jimmy Kimmel. "So then we were coming out, and there's quite a sharp corner, and the Italian streets are pretty tiny. And for some reason my character had the most enormous car they could find. So just as I was very coolly trying to turn this corner and I was staying in line as I was turning it, I basically bashed the entire side of the car with Tom into the wall. It was nearly sort of game over. But luckily he's very cool."

And Hanks wasn't the only one knocked around. He and Jones say Omar Sy, who portrays Christoph Bruder in the movie, also took one for the team during production. Sy got a little tangled up with a steady-cam guy and ended up taking a tumble.

"Poor Omar fell in the water in his first day of filming," Jones revealed.

"I’m telling you, this is the first shot, we’re in Venice and I’m going to be dragged out of some dank hallway somewhere," Hanks added. "And up ahead I see on the water Omar just got knocked into the canals of Venice somehow. He was wearing dark pants so you couldn’t tell that he was wet."

The graceful Jones was not immune to the Inferno, either. She was pushed to exhaustion from running her butt off in incredible temperatures... wearing heels.

"Cobblestones, cobblestones are a bitch," Hanks said of Jones' filming experience. "You know, you have to run across cobblestones, that always hurts."

Michael Phelps lied to us all about his wedding

Michael Phelps just pulled a serious fast one.

More: We swam right up to Michael Phelps' new Scottsdale house and got a closer look

Back when he was in Rio at the Olympics, Phelps talked about the wedding he and his fiancée, former Miss California Nicole Johnson, were planning.

"I really can’t wait to get married," he said at the time. "It will be a small destination wedding later this year. It’s the next big milestone I’m looking forward to."

Now, news has come out that Phelps and Johnson actually exchanged vows in Arizona back in June, months before the Olympics. TMZ reports that Phelps' agent, Peter Carlisle, was the officiant, and the couple's 6-month-old son, Boomer, was part of the ceremony as well.

More: Even when Michael Phelps talks about Ryan Lochte's stupidity, we still swoon

No one can really blame him for wanting to keep it under wraps. For a celeb who wants a small, intimate, private ceremony, the pressure of being in the spotlight all the time must get annoying. And with the Olympics this year, Phelps was definitely in the spotlight.

People should definitely look past this little bit of deceit, and instead be happy for the couple. After all, Phelps has been gushing about his now-wife for years.

"I said to a couple of my friends if I ever had the chance to get her back, that would be it. She was the one I loved the most," he said last year, after they split in 2011 and got back together in 2014. "Her and I have been on and off for eight years. It's been a long time. We've been through a lot. But I love her to death. We've been able to grow as a couple through everything we've been through, the positive changes I've made in my life."

Congrats to Michael Phelps and his wife, Nicole Johnson! Now they can focus on making more babies. I mean, look at that face...

All the times Megyn Kelly's made headlines

Fox News anchor Megyn Kelly earned quite the name for herself throughout the 2016 election coverage, but she was making headlines long before Donald Trump decided to talk about her period on national television.

More: 11 things feminists should brace themselves for if Donald Trump wins

These are her biggest moments throughout the years.

1. Kelly and Kirsten Powers argue over the Black Panthers

One of the first times viewers witnessed Kelly's backbone was back in 2010 when she got into it with Fox News' more liberal contributor, Powers, over the merits of a case against the new wave of the Black Panthers.

2. Kelly defends maternity leave

Ignorance is not bliss when it comes to rights for expecting and new mothers. Radio host Mike Gallagher publicly criticized Kelly for taking a three-month maternity leave, and she tore him to shreds for the comments.

"What a moronic thing to say," she told him when he called her leave "a racket."

Megyn Kelly video 11

3. Kelly called Barack Obama and Mitt Romney liars

Just because Kelly works at the traditionally conservative Fox News doesn't mean she's against calling it like it is, and she did just that leading up to the 2012 presidential election.

"They lie!" Kelly said of Romney and Obama. "Mitt Romney put out an ad about Solyndra that The Washington Post said was full of Pinocchios and not true, and Barack Obama did the same thing about Mitt Romney’s time at Bain Capital."

4. Kelly breaks down over injured Syrian child

Journalists typically don't show emotion, but Kelly couldn't help herself while watching a brutal video of a Syrian child injured in airstrike attacks.

5. Kelly marches to the Decision Desk following President Obama's reelection

This is the moment many think made Kelly a star.

Karl Rove tried to place doubt that President Obama had been reelected and Kelly marched down to the Decision Desk to set the record straight about the November 2012 election night results.

6. Kelly sticks it to Lou Dobbs and Erick Erickson over women's roles

Fox contributors Dobbs and Erickson tried to bemoan the fact that a new study found that 40 percent of women are the breadwinner for their households.

"What makes you dominant and me submissive and who died and made you scientist-in-chief?" Kelly fired back at the men for their ignorant comments.

Megyn Kelly video 12

7. Kelly tells children Santa Clause is white

For all of Kelly's progressive words over the years, she's also had her fair share of face-meets-palm moments, like this one in December 2013.

“For all you kids watching at home, Santa just is white," Kelly said in response to the suggestion that we have diverse Santas. "But this person is maybe just arguing that we should also have a black Santa. But, you know, Santa is what he is, and just so you know, we’re just debating this because someone wrote about it, kids.”

8. Kelly interviews Jim Bob and Michelle Duggar

Following the Josh Duggar molestation scandal, Kelly was chosen as the reporter to sit down with Michelle and Jim Bob Duggar for a personal, in-depth interview in June 2015 to talk about the family and how they handled their son's actions.

Megyn Kelly video 2

A lot of viewers thought that Kelly was too sensitive during the interview, considering the accusations against the family, but the interview nevertheless made headlines for months.

9. Kelly calls out Trump and the first Republican presidential debate

During the Fox News debate in Fall 2015, which kicked off the 2016 presidential election debate season, Kelly posed the question to Trump, "You've called women you don't like 'fat pigs,' 'dogs,' 'slobs,' and 'disgusting animals.' Does that sound to you like the temperament of a man we should elect as president?"

Megyn Kelly video 1

Megyn Kelly video 1

Trump wasn't a fan of Kelly's question and later said in a radio interview about the moment, "You could see there was blood coming out of her eyes. Blood coming out of her wherever..."

The comment caused a lot of backlash for Trump for his implications about women and their periods.

10. Kelly interviews Donald Trump

Long overdue following the August debate debacle, Kelly finally got her chance for a sit-down interview with Trump in May 2016. Kelly point-blank asked Trump why he called her a "bimbo." His response? "Come on, you've been called a lot worse."

Megyn Kelly video 3

11. Kelly gets in heated argument with D.L. Hughley over racism

In July 2016, following the killings of Philando Castile, Alton Sterling and the police killings in Dallas, Kelly let comedian Hughley have it when their racial discussion turned fiery.

"The only place racism doesn't exist is Fox News and the police department," Hughley said sarcastically, which caused Kelly to forcefully respond.

Megyn Kelly video 4

12. Kelly puts Newt Gingrich in his place

Most recently in October 2016, Kelly continued her hard-hitting attitude toward Republican politicians. She got in a heated argument with Gingrich over the sexual assault claims against Trump. Gingrich tried to suggest Kelly is "fascinated with sex," but Kelly wasn't having it. She played the trump card (no pun intended) at the end of the interview, saying, "We’re going to leave it at that, and you can take your anger issues and spend some time working on them, Mr. Speaker."

The interview, for obvious reasons, exploded on the Twitterverse.

Two and a Half Men's Angus T. Jones admits he misses acting

Here's a name that hasn't been in the news in a while: Angus T. Jones.

More: VIDEO: Angus T. Jones' new look and a new life in the church

The former Two and a Half Men actor is well-known for his religious views — and the ranting interview he gave in 2012 urging viewers of the show that made him famous to stop watching because it was "filth."

While Jones walked back on what he said less than a day later, he still left the show in 2013, and recently told People magazine that he feels like he made the right call at the time.

"You cannot be a true God-fearing person and be on a television show like that," he told the magazine.

More: Jon Cryer: Two and a Half Men scandals were "surreal"

Since then, Jones has been studying at the University of Colorado Boulder and working for some faith-based organizations. But could he make a return to acting? He's not ruling it out.

Jones, who is taking a break from school at the moment, also told People that appearing on Two and a Half Men's finale made him realize that he kind of misses acting.

"Getting to be back on the set with everyone again kind of showed me how much I did like it," he admitted.

Still, don't expect to see Jones back on your TV screen right away.

"The door is definitely still open for me to do that, but I’m taking things slowly," he explained.

And who even knows what his return to acting might look like? Other actors who turned more toward their religious sides made the call to stick with projects that promote their faith (Kirk Cameron, anyone?). Even if Jones does decide to make the leap back into acting, he may not choose another mainstream TV show like Two and a Half Men.

The Moon Juice Cookbook is total health and beauty goals, but it'll cost you

$

To explore the pages of Amanda Chantal Bacon's The Moon Juice Cookbook is to embark on an odyssey through a brave new world of wellness and beauty. It's a fantastical landscape filled with magic mushrooms, sex dust and cosmic connection. I'm not mocking. Paging through this sparkle-covered book, I was seduced by its promises of radiant skin, a robust immune system, an enlightened mind and spirit, energy for days and a cheerfully compliant digestive system. Who doesn't want those things? Who doesn't want this life?

I'm not too proud to admit I do. I sure as hell want that life.

In case you're not already familiar, Chantal Bacon is the proprietor of the Moon Juice, a café and shop that sells beverages and powders made with plant-based ingredients, some of which are based in Asian alternative medicine. Her Los Angeles shop has a cult following. Remember Gwyneth Paltrow's $200 morning smoothie? (I mean, that's how much it costs to buy all the ingredients for it, not how much an individual serving of the smoothie costs.) That's Moon Juice.

Now there's a cookbook so those of us who don't live in Los Angeles can discover what all the fuss is about, and discover you shall. I'm going to start with the largest barrier to participation, and that's cost. Holy hell, the Moon Juice lifestyle is expensive. Here's some of what's recommended to get started:

  • A juicer — a good juicer
  • A dehydrator
  • Ingredients such as cordyceps ($35) and Ho Shou Wu ($18).

I do not have these things. And I would love to stock my pantry with the likes of Schisandra berry, mucuna pruriens and tocotrienols and just skip this month's mortgage payment. Surely the bank would understand, especially after I tell them about all the health benefits of my new Moon Juice lifestyle...? Ha-ha, surely not.

Having examined the book closely, though, and given it some thought, I'm pretty certain you can hack this lifestyle, and I'm going to tell you how.

How to hack The Moon Juice Cookbook

A guide for us regular slobs.

  • Baby steps. Start with just one recipe. Pick one that sounds delicious to you and that has the most recognizable ingredients and the fewest what-the-hell-is-that? ingredients possible. I started with the golden milk, shared below.
  • Don't make your own milks yet. There are recipes for alternative milks, which you then use to make other recipes. Unless you're already making your own, just buy almond or coconut milk from the store.
  • Simplify the recipes when you can. For example, I'm thinking of making the immunity hot chocolate, which has reishi and chaga powders. I looked them both up in the book, and they have overlapping (though not identical) health benefits. So I decided to make it with just the reishi and leave out the chaga. These recipes are not gospel. You can tweak them to make them simpler or more affordable by making substitutions or dropping ingredients. This is not a zero-sum cookbook. You can still benefit from an almost recipe.
  • Use the equipment you've already got. Did you know you can use your blender as a juicer? And you can use your oven as a dehydrator. See? No new equipment necessary after all.
  • Search online for deals on those obscure ingredients. I ordered my whosie-whatsit ingredients from Amazon and used my Prime free shipping. Compare Terrasoul reishi ($15/5.5 ounces) with the reishi from Moon Juice ($48/2.43 ounces). But you may have other sources. Just be careful to research the brands to make sure they have a reputation for quality. Read the reviews. If you're shelling out for this stuff, you don't want to be ripped off with sawdust.
  • Find your favorites. Maybe I'm crazy, but a cookbook is worth it to me if there are just a couple of recipes I love and use all the time. Well, this Moon life endeavor is going to be a lot less expensive if there are a couple of recipes you use — and buy ingredients for — on a regular basis, rather than trying to make everything in the book.
  • Follow Bacon's suggestions. The book includes tips for getting the most out of your ingredients and avoiding waste, so look for those.

Bottom line: I give away the vast majority of review cookbooks that come my way because I get so many. This one, I'm keeping.

Now let's try this golden milk recipe. My Indian boyfriend grew up drinking turmeric-infused milk whenever he was sick, but his version wasn't anywhere near this ambrosial. I love the funky, earthy scent of fresh turmeric if you can find it. See Bacon's note on using powdered.

Inflammation tamer | beauty food | detoxifier

Golden milk is the cult moon milk.

Years ago, unaware of its Ayurvedic roots, I naively conjured the idea of an ancient yogic recipe that added turmeric juice and spice into milk. This is a blend that really wants to be on the planet: From its resurrection in the Moon Juice kitchen to now being widely enjoyed by the masses, it is a luminous recipe that is equally healing and pleasurable.

Turmeric root has a thousand and one virtues, including inflammation-soothing properties that are as effective as a painkiller for me. I find it works within about twenty minutes to address joint pain.

This nourishing Moon Milk delivers lifetimes of pleasure and a multidimensional taste experience. It speaks to the magic of medicinal traditions that expand beyond time and space, recalling the ancient phenomena of Ayurveda. If you can’t get fresh turmeric, you can substitute 1/2 teaspoon of ground turmeric but it will have a distinctly different flavor.

Yields 16 ounces

Ingredients:

  • 12 ounces almond milk
  • 3/4 pound fresh turmeric, juiced
  • 2 teaspoons raw honey or sweetener of choice
  • 1/8 teaspoon ground cardamom
  • 1/4 teaspoon ground cinnamon
  • 5 whole black peppercorns, or 3 drops black pepper oil

Directions:

  1. Combine all the ingredients in a blender and blend on high until the peppercorns have fully broken down.

Moon Dusting: Enriching this golden potion with 1 teaspoon lucuma powder adds to the inflammation-taming benefits of the turmeric, and will help you cut down on the honey content, enhancing the inherent sweetness of the fresh turmeric root juice. Try halving your honey, or use none at all!

10 luscious foods that'll help you go the distance in the bedroom

$

Have you ever had a moment during sex when the mind is willing, but the body just ain't able? Dehydration sets in, a random body part starts to cramp up... things can slide downhill with a quickness in the bedroom.

It's embarrassing, but it has happened to the best of us.

Before you get too down about it, there is a way to improve your bedroom stamina — and it involves fruit. And seafood. And dessert. That's right, you can actually eat your way to a better sex life. You're welcome.

A general note on nutrition

Without delving too far into it, literature from WebMD to Discovery Health agrees that the best diet for sex is one that leads to a healthier lifestyle. The healthier the body, the better it will function as it's "exercising," but more important, you'll feel better about yourself. Research shows that most of the blocks to great sex (in healthy sexually active adults) are mood, not food. Stay fit, and you'll feel better about yourself and have better sex.

Make your intimate moments longer, stronger and hotter

It can be easy to forget that, at its heart, sex is a cardio workout. Just like someone getting ready to go to the gym or an athlete getting ready to run a marathon, proper nutrition is essential to getting the sexiest results possible. Fortunately, just like sports nutritionists have identified optimal meals for the best results in a run, nutritionists have also discovered foods that will increase your stamina in bed.

The good news is that each of these foods is delicious in addition to giving you and your partner the endurance to keep the love on. The better news is that, unlike running a marathon, you'll really love trying these sex foods and seeing the results for yourself.

1. Foods rich in vitamin B12

Any food rich in vitamin B12 will help the body with energy production, and with so many options to choose from, it's easy to get more B12 into your diet. These options include eggs, shellfish, beef, caviar and fortified tofu. Once you've had your B12 feast, you can expect increased blood circulation and strength. It also helps to elevate mood.

More: How to pick out, shuck and prepare oysters like a pro

2. Raw oysters

The myth about oysters being good for you in bed is actually true. Oysters are high in zinc, which stimulates testosterone, a hormone useful for building and maintaining desire in both men and women. They also deliver amino acids that have been linked to sexual desire, and omega-3s, which help keep you in the mood. They also have lots of B12. Win-win. "Oysters create more sexual stamina because you are so turned on. Maybe it is all the zinc and B12, but once people make oysters a part of their eating routine, they crave them. And then they crave something else," says Dr. Drew Ramsey, assistant clinical professor of psychiatry at Columbia University and author of Eat Complete: The 21 Nutrients That Fuel Brainpower, Boost Weight Loss, and Transform Your Health.

(It's always best to remember that eating raw shellfish can lead to food poisoning, so get your raw oysters from reputable sources only. Nothing says unsexy diet like tummy trouble.)

3. Asparagus

While there is the nasty rumor that asparagus can make your pee smell, don't cross this pungent veggie off your list of romantic foods altogether. As Tristan Weedmark, Global Passion Ambassador at We-Vibe, explains it, asparagus is chock-full of vitamin E, which can help to aid in the production of testosterone.

And for the couples who are hoping to get a little bit more out of their night of passion, Weedmark says, "In addition to increasing stamina, asparagus can boost sex drive as well as sperm count."

4. Avocados

Lovers of guac, rejoice! Avocados are so insanely nutritious that they are considered by many to be a superfood, and Weedmark categorizes the tasty fruit as a sexual superfood too. For starters, he says, avocados are an extra-rich source of monounsaturated fats and vitamin B6.

"These help keep energy levels up, which is crucial for endurance in the bedroom. They also contain mood-boosting omega-3 fatty acids, and of course, feeling happy can’t hurt when it comes to sexual interest and performance," Weedmark explains.

More: How to cut and pit avocados so you can make all the toast you want

5. Grapes

Of red grapes, Rebecca Lewis, in-house RD at HelloFresh, says, "They are a good source of boron, which is a mineral that helps stimulate the production of both estrogen and testosterone." Both these hormones have been shown to aid men and women in bedroom performance: estrogen for libido in women, and testosterone for physical stamina of any kind in both men and women.

Next up: Watermelon

{pageBreak}

6. Watermelon

Watermelon is packed with citrulline, a natural chemical that helps the body increase oxygen flow in the blood. If possible, try to find a way to mix watermelon with garlic and/or ginger, both of which are found to cause blood to flow into the private parts in both women and men.

More: Your watermelon is a cocktail with these spiked slices

7. Lemon

When you're making that romantic Valentine's Day, anniversary or TGIF meal for your boo, don't forget to put on the finishing touch — fresh lemon zest is not only flavorful, but it may be an "underutilized enhancer of pleasure," according to Dr. Ramsey.

For men especially, Dr. Ramsey says that a zest of lemon will have an immediate below-the-belt impact. He explains, "Compounds in the pith act much like Viagra, and others in the zest promote a dreamy, pleasurable state by stimulating the brain's opiate receptors."

8. Pomegranate

Pomegranate is an ancient symbol of romance seen throughout literature, and it's making its modern-day comeback in the new millennium. We already know that pomegranates are kind of hard to eat, which means you may have to spend a few extra minutes licking the pulp off your date's fingers. But that ripe and juicy fruit that strangely resembles the female anatomy also has nutritional benefits — as a prime source of antioxidants and a booster of sexual appetite.

"The antioxidants present in this delicious fruit are a triple threat!" Lewis says. "They help increase testosterone production, improve blood circulation and improve mood."

9. Nuts

The puns may abound when serving nuts before sex, but L-arginine-rich nuts, like pistachios, peanuts and walnuts, can have a powerful effect when eaten pre-nookie. Lewis says, "It’s all about the L-arginine! L-arginine is an amino acid, which stimulates the production of nitric oxide, which helps dilate blood vessels, which in turn increases blood flow to the penis, strengthening erections."

Lewis adds, "Bonus: Watermelon contains an antioxidant that transforms into L-arginine once ingested."

10. Chocolate

Is there anything chocolate can't do? In particular, dark chocolate, while already being sexy on its own, helps release chemicals in the brain that lead to euphoria. This can help lead to a prolonged sexual experience. It's also packed with antioxidants, which generally make the body perform better.

Dr. Ramsey says, "Coffee and dark chocolate are Mother Nature's stimulants. Doubters should try a double espresso and 3 ounces of dark chocolate before their next morning romp."

Let's just be honest here: We love just about everything Samantha Bee does.

More: Bernie or Busters on Full Frontal are making me ashamed to be a liberal

Not only is she hilarious and super-smart, but Bee crashes through glass ceilings left and right. She made history by being the first woman to host a late-night satirical news program in a world dominated by Stephen Colbert and Jon Stewart, who hosted The Daily Show, where Bee actually got her start. And now, she's going to be the first such female host to interview President Barack Obama — or any president, for that matter.

Obama is scheduled to sit down with Bee on Halloween night on her show, Full Frontal.

TBS announced the interview Wednesday, writing, "The conversation with America's male president, who wore a flattering wool suit paired with sensible leather flats, follows Samantha's October 24th interviews with Norwegian Prime Minister Erna Solberg, Chilean President Michelle Bachelet, Marshallese President Hilda Heine, Croatian President Kolinda Grabar-Kitarovic, along with former Secretary of State Madeleine Albright."

It continues, "It covers a range of topics, from the 44th president's legacy to the challenges the new Commander in Chief will face when she takes office in January. (Yes, "she." Spoiler alert.)"

Considering how supportive Bee has been of Democratic presidential nominee Hillary Clinton's bid to be the first woman to lead the country, we can only hope she'll be breaking another glass ceiling: First interview with a female American president.

From multicolored leaves that litter the ground, to small sachets of our favorite candies and chocolates, early fall and the Halloween season have easily recognizable attributes. But did you know that certain elements may also be educational?

More: No, your kid doesn't have to do every extracurricular activity

Take the pumpkin — children draw pumpkins in school, we eat pumpkin in our seasonal foods and drinks, and we buy pumpkins to decorate our homes. When combined with a bit of planning and forethought, pumpkins can also impart lessons to children of almost any age. This Halloween, try one (or more) of these ways to turn a pumpkin into a learning experience:

Involve your child in the purchasing process

Whether you are searching for a carving pumpkin, a decorative gourd, or a pie pumpkin, your neighborhood farmers’ market or supermarket will likely carry them. Before you set out to buy your pumpkins, ask your student to estimate the cost per item. You can also decide the maximum amount you are willing to pay. Once you arrive at the farmers’ market or supermarket, challenge your child to determine the maximum number of pumpkins you can buy. These steps, as well as allowing your student to be the one who pays, can effectively exercise math skills.

Research the history of the pumpkin with your family

Children in late elementary or middle school may be more inclined to trick-or-treat with their friends than to explore the educational upside of a pumpkin — but if your student loves history, this activity may just capture her interest! Encourage her to research the history of the pumpkin, which originated in the Americas, and to present it in a creative manner of her choice. For example, perhaps she decides to build a diorama that illustrates the “Three Sisters” growing method for corn, pumpkin, and squash. Or perhaps she translates this history into a poem or song.

Play a math game with your child

Younger students — particularly those in preschool and kindergarten — can practice their counting skills with this math game: Parents can hide miniature pumpkins throughout the home and/or yard (the pumpkins can be artificial or real, though relatively durable pumpkins are best). Tell your child how many pumpkins there are in total, and then ask her to find them. As she locates each item, she can update her total, and when she believes she has found them all, she can count again to be certain. This activity is also an excellent way to stretch critical thinking and problem-solving skills.

Decorate pumpkins with your family

The most common use of pumpkins on Halloween is, thankfully, also educational! Sketching a jack-o-lantern pattern on a pumpkin and then carving it requires both an active imagination and fine motor skills. Students in high school who are interested in engineering may even find unexpected applications, such as the balance between an intricate design and a structurally unsound pumpkin. Very young children can enjoy the same benefits and avoid the risks of working with knives and scissors by painting pumpkins. Glitter and metallic paints can add an additional layer of fun to the activity.
