Good news (for once) for older pregnant women

$

0

If you’ve been pregnant past the age of 35, then you’re familiar with the amusing-but-not-really experience of being referred to as "geriatric." Being an "older" pregnant woman brings various risks (such as greater risk of high blood pressure, miscarriage or gestational diabetes). But a new study published in JAMA shows older pregnant women get at least one break: Younger women, but not older women, have an increased stroke risk during pregnancy and immediately after.

More: 7 reasons I love being the 'oldest mom on the block'

The study, which came out of Columbia University Medical Center, focused on data collected on every woman hospitalized for stroke in New York state between 2003 and 2012. Pregnancy-associated strokes affected 14 of every 100,000 pregnant women aged 12 (!) to 24 years old, compared to 6.4 per 100,000 non-pregnant women in that group. Overall, pregnancy-associated strokes accounted for 18 percent of strokes in women younger than 35 years versus 1.4 percent of strokes in women aged 35 to 55 years.

“These results have potential implications for research aimed at better characterizing and preventing PAS and clinically in terms of counseling patients,” wrote the study’s authors. “Although older women have an increased risk of many pregnancy complications, a higher risk of stroke may not be one of them.” So, celebrate, old pregnant women! But slowly and carefully, Grandma — don’t break a hip.

Parents of newborns should share a room (but not a bed) — why?

$

Parents in a rush to decorate their kids’ nurseries before the baby comes can slow their roll. A new report from the American Academy of Pediatrics recommends that parents co-room — but not co-sleep — with children up to the age of 1 in order to best protect against SIDS and other sleep-related infant deaths.

“Infants should sleep in the same bedroom as their parents — but on a separate surface, such as a crib or bassinet, and never on a couch, armchair or soft surface — to decrease the risks of sleep-related deaths,” according to a new policy statement released by the AAP.

More: Doctors figured out the 1 day of the year SIDS deaths are highest

You know how a study comes out and you get all defensive because you make it all about you and decide that the study basically says, “You are lucky your kids are alive at all, you terrible parent!” I did that thing. Not only did I not breastfeed (which the AAP recommends as another weapon in the arsenal against SIDS), my husband and I put both our kids in their own rooms immediately upon arriving home from the hospital. We took turns rooming in with our first son on a futon in his room, and predictably, woke up with every little grunt and sigh he made. We had a tough time.

By the time the second kid came, we just put him in his room, slept in our own bed and kept the door open. We thought we had it all figured out. But according to pediatrician Rachel Moon, lead author of the AAP report, those annoying, exhausting little wakeups we experienced with our first son are conceivably what can keep kids safe.

More: Co-sleeping mothers are lying about sleeping with their babies

“We believe that roomsharing changes how the baby sleeps,” she told me via email. “When you are in the same room, there are frequent small awakenings, both for the baby and the parent. When the baby stirs, the parents wakes a little bit. And when the parent stirs, the baby wakes a little bit. We know that the ability to arouse is enormously protective, and it is likely that these small awakenings are protective.”

So, there you go. Good luck, new parents. Keeping kids alive these days is serious business.

Gilmore Girls trailer has us speculating about only Jess, Dean, Sookie & Logan TBH

$

0

After what seems like an excruciatingly long time, the first Gilmore Girls: A Year in the Life trailer is finally here. It is filled with two minutes of greatness that if you don't get at least a little bit teary-eyed watching, then you clearly have no feelings and aren't a true Gilmore Girls fan.

More: 25 things we know so far about the Gilmore Girls revival

There are so many spoilers throughout the revival's trailer, and as exciting as it is to see Lorelai, Rory, Luke and Emily back in action, can we talk about Jess, Dean, Logan and Sookie? It is glorious once again to see Milo Ventimiglia, Jared Padalecki, Matt Czuchry and Melissa McCarthy getting back into character.

Ever since it was announced GG would return with four 90-minute episodes, fans have been wondering what these four have been up to and what they'll see from them when the revival debuts. Well, the trailer definitely gives us some insight into what to expect from them. With that, let the analyzing and theorizing begin.

1. Is Jess still in publishing?

Jess and Rory, Gilmore Girls revival
Image: Netflix/YouTube

If you're all about Jess and Rory ending up together, then this brief clip of them talking is probably making you swoon. Not only are the two talking about Rory's lack of life and career, Jess tells her, "You're still a contender." When didn't he try to give her advice or inspire her to do better for herself?

Then, there is the window behind Rory. Only part of the words at the bottom of the window are clear, but it reads, "Stars Hollow" and "publishing since." Also, take note of the computers behind Jess. Does this mean he is still writing and publishing? Does this mean he is now writing in Stars Hollow? Or does this mean Rory has taken a job at Stars Hollow's local newspaper?

Whatever the case, it sure seems like one or both of them are living out their writing dreams in Stars Hollow.

2. Dean and Doose's go really well together

Dean Forester, Gilmore Girls revival
Image: Netflix

There is a very quick glimpse of Dean in the trailer. It's so quick, in fact, that grabbing a GIF of him was pretty much impossible. Anyway, Dean is standing inside Doose's Market, because of course he is. It's only appropriate, especially since that is where Rory and Dean shared their first kiss.

Now, as to who Dean turns around to look at? That remains unclear, but maybe it's Rory? Also, he is clearly featured in the final episode of the revival ("Fall") based on all those leaves around the door and the windows of Doose's. If he is in the last episode, does this mean good things for Rory and Dean 'shippers?

More: QUIZ: Think you're the biggest Gilmore Girls fan? Prove it!

3. Sookie is bringing the dirty jokes

Sookie St. James
Image: Netflix/YouTube

It was pretty traumatic when McCarthy almost didn't return as Sookie. Thankfully, she is back and still as hilarious as ever. She is also making dirty jokes in the trailer. After squirting frosting from a piping bag, she says, "Wow, that was pornographic." Yes, Sookie. Her delivery is always spot-on.

Now, as to what she is decorating: Is that a wedding cake? Is it for Rory and whomever she may end up with? Is it for Luke and Lorelai? Is it for someone else? Who knows, but it sure seems likely that Sookie is putting her chef skills to good use by making the best possible wedding cake ever.

4. Logan looks all professional

Logan, Gilmore Girls revival
Image: Netflix

Like Dean, fans have to pay attention or they might miss Logan at the end of the trailer. If you did miss him, here is a screen-grab. First, that smile will make Logan supporters weak in the knees. Second, he sure looks all professional chilling with his tablet on a couch in that spiffy dress shirt. Also, based on the two guitars behind him, it appears he's into music.

Is this Logan's apartment in San Francisco? If you recall, at the end of the series, Logan was set to go off to the West Coast for a job. Wherever he is and whatever he is up to, Logan sure looks good and clearly hasn't lost his swagger.

Now, watch the trailer for yourself and get those tissues ready because die-hard GG fans will definitely shed a tear or two.

5 awesome (and 4 not-so-awesome) things about multigenerational homes

$
0
0

When I first met my in-laws (before they were my in-laws) one of the things I liked about them was that they lived far away in a beautiful place I was happy to visit, but was not accessible by direct flights. They were lovely and kind people, and I didn't mind that we had close to nothing in common. My husband said they talked to each other on major holidays, visited when tickets were cheap about once a year and happily lived their own lives.

Perfect, right? Things worked out that way for a few years. Then we had a kid.

My mistake was marrying an only child, whose retired parents were only too eager to sell their lake house in Montana and move in with us in Chicago so they could be around the grandchild. After a few months sharing an apartment (and one bathroom) with my in-laws, we moved into a two-flat just outside the city and became one of the growing number of multigenerational households in the U.S. since the Great Recession.

I’ve been living with my in-laws for five-plus years, and we now have another grandchild for them to dote on. If you’re considering a similar arrangement, take heed from these lessons learned.

Here are five awesome (and four not-so-awesome) things about living with your in-laws.

Awesome: You can share expenses.

  • My in-laws helped out generously with the down payment needed to buy our building, and we split monthly utilities 50/50. When we first moved in together, I told them I didn’t watch much TV and didn’t want to pay for cable. They definitely wanted cable, because sports. So now I get free cable, which, it turns out, is pretty sweet.

More: Adolescence across the generations

Not-so-awesome: Your in-laws will see your house when it’s messy.

  • You know what I’m talking about: dining room table heaped with laundry, teetering pile of unsorted mail in the front hall, 743 matchbox cars dumped out by your toddler in the middle of the floor. At first, I tried to be a better housekeeper and constantly have my space company-ready. That proved to be a lot of work, and there came a day when I gave up the relentless tidying. There was no helping it; my fastidiously neat in-laws would see the cluttered way we normally lived.
  • You know what happened when my in-laws saw the mess? Nothing, really. They didn’t snatch their grandchild up while shooting me looks of disgust and take him upstairs to their impeccable, white-carpeted apartment. They didn’t make any judgmental comments — or even any passive-aggressive comments — something I feel sure members of my own family would not have been able to resist. They sat happily in our messy living room and vroomed toy cars around with my kid. Turns out they don’t care too much how clean our apartment is, and worrying about it so much was really just my own issue. (Now I can use all that time I used to spend cleaning reading articles about how messiness is a sign of intelligence.)

Awesome: You develop new empathy — and perhaps respect — for your spouse as you imagine what his upbringing was like.

  • I can’t tell you how many times I’ve thought, “So that’s why you’re like that.” I know now why he thinks plain buttered noodles constitute a complete meal (his parents hate to cook) and why he leaves his dirty socks next to the bed (his mom will come pick them up and wash them for him. Yes, still.) Understanding the origins of his quirks helps me appreciate how far he’s come.

Not-so-awesome: You end up sharing information you would otherwise keep to yourself.

  • My in-laws know whenever I leave the house. I would not normally share with them that I’m heading out for drinks with friends at 9 p.m. on a weeknight, but alas, it’s an old building and sound travels; they hear me leave. They also can’t help but know about everything that comes into the house, meaning every box from Amazon, every article of clothing I order online, every night we order takeout for dinner. Again, they don’t make judgmental comments, but they’ll say, “So nice you are getting out with friends,” or “Boy, you guys get a lot of packages.” It’s hard not to feel self-conscious, when you are, in fact, being watched.

Awesome: Free babysitting.

  • And not just free occasional date-night babysitting, which alone is amazing, but free after-school babysitting so you can put in a normal workday and free spur-of-the-moment run-to-Target-for-diapers babysitting. And we all know a run to Target by yourself is basically better than a vacation.

Not-so-awesome: Your spouse might retain some, um, adolescent-ish anxieties about marital activities when his parents are awake and in the building.

  • Alas, it’s an old building and sound travels. Let’s just say some of the spontaneity is gone.

Awesome: You might be able to sleep in.

  • We’ve arranged with our in-laws that on Saturday mornings we can send our 5-year-old straight upstairs when he wakes up, still in his pajamas. He crawls into bed with them to play bear cave under the covers, and my husband and I sleep in, together. (At least, we used to, until we had another baby, but pretty soon she’ll be old enough to go straight upstairs on Saturday mornings too, right? Right??)

Not-so-awesome: Special treats you only get at Grandma’s house become everyday treats.

  • If your kid sees his grandparents occasionally, it’s easy to let them indulge him in sweets and other “sometime foods.” Living together changes this completely, and to be honest, it’s an ongoing struggle in our house. My mother-in-law believes any breakfast with fruit present somewhere is a healthy meal, and my son has told me of many mornings when he enjoyed “half a banana surrounded by whipped cream” to start his Saturday morning. My view of what is nutritious is drastically different from my in-laws’, and I go through phases where I try to prepare almost all of my son’s food myself, even when they are doing a lot of the child care.

Awesome: Your kids will develop a close relationship with their grandparents.

  • My own mom passed away before I married or had kids, so perhaps I’m more sentimental about this than some, but having present grandparents is an amazing gift to give your children. My in-laws are incredibly supportive and spend a lot of time and energy helping take care of our kids. My son respects and adores his grandparents upstairs. They have private jokes and little routines that come from being in each other's lives day in and day out. Nothing but good comes from having more people around who love your children unconditionally.

You guys, you're so silly — Jessa Duggar didn't mean she was having twins

$

It seems like every Duggar pregnancy inspires rumors of twins.

More: Jana Duggar deserves more than her sheltered life

And Jessa Duggar's current one is no different. The way that Jessa and her husband, Ben Seewald, decided to announce her second pregnancy to the rest of the Duggar family was apparently confusing for some fans and viewers, who took it to mean Jessa has two little bundles of joy on the way instead of just one.

In a new teaser video for an upcoming episode of Jill and Jessa: Counting On, Jessa and Ben recall the day they announced to the family that they were expecting again. They had Jinger take a family photo of Jessa and Ben together, their toddler Spurgeon clinging to Jessa's leg, while they hold a chalkboard sign that says "Doubling the love, Feb. 2017." They presented the photo announcement to their family during an ice cream social, and fans will get to see the reaction on an upcoming episode of the show.

Image: TLC

More: Josiah Duggar's sexuality isn't anyone's business but his

But the language they used on the sign has a lot of people confused. When they say "doubling the love," that means twins, right? That's how some people have been interpreting it.

"People have asked me that. ‘You’re having twins!'" Jessa explained in the video. "That’s not what it means. It means doubling — like, we already have one, and now it’s two.”

Rumors of twins were flying during Jessa's first pregnancy, as well as several other Duggar women's pregnancies. Jessa was even accused of using the twin question to build hype for her show — she posted a survey online asking people to guess her baby's gender, including options for boy-boy, boy-girl and girl-girl sets of twins.

You use natural remedies on yourself — why not use them on your pet?

Homeopathic remedies, they're not just for people anymore! Herbal tinctures and natural health aids can also do wonders for the health of your pet.

Some natural remedies actually work better than pharmaceuticals dished out by doctors, and are less likely to cause side effects. Keeping a few products on hand might just save you that super costly trip to the vet.

More: Our favorite superfood spice should be added to your dog's diet

Building an all natural medicine cabinet for your critter is really not that hard. Here are some herb and plant basics to get your started, but before you do, remember to always check with your vet before giving your pet anything new.

1. Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy

Rescue Remedy is homeopathic tincture made from flower essences developed by Dr. Edward Bach. The product is particularly helpful for stress. Whether your animal suffers from separation anxiety, stress from a recent move or even the death of another pet or an owner, Rescue Remedy can help.

Rescue Remedy comes in drops or spray, and is available at most natural food stores like Whole Foods or Sprouts. You can also purchase online here.

2. Aloe vera

aloe

aloe

Just like with humans, the aloe vera plant is helpful for skin issues in animals. Aloe vera is great for soothing your pet's skin if they have hot spots or an allergic reaction, according to The American Animal Hospital Association via The Nest.

However, ingesting aloe vera can be harmful for dogs and cats and might result in nasty case of diarrhea. To be safe, be sure to bandage the area you apply aloe vera to your pet, and provide adequate supervision to ensure they don't lick it off. You also want to be careful to only apply the gel part of the plant. The white sap around the edges contain latex, which can also be harmful.

Aloe can be purchased by the bottle at many stores, but it's best — and more cost effective — to just get a plant and break open the leaves yourself.

3. Calendula

Image: Amazon

Calendula oil's antimicrobial and wound-healing properties make it a must-have for treating minor cuts, insect bites, abrasions, eczema and poison ivy, according to natural-dog-health-remedies.com. It can also be used on sprains and bruises, as an eye wash for conjunctivitis, or for the treatment of inflammation or ulceration of the digestive or urinary tracts.

You can purchase calendula extract formulated especially for pets on Amazon here.

4. Hypericum (St. John’s Wort)

According to VCA Animal Hospitals, St. John's Wort helps to reduce anxiety, depression and psychological stress in cats and dogs — so it comes in real handy during thunderstorms and visits to the groomer or vet.

VCA also says that scientists have identified a chemical basis for the herb's ability to relieve pain in a way similar to opiates, so St. John's Wort is very useful for pain management in dogs and cats. In addition, "topical application of the essential oil prepared from St. John's Wort may help with mild contusions, muscle aches, and minor skin irritations."

St. John's Wort should not be used in conjunction with any other medications, so be sure to check with your vet before giving any to your pet.

5. Echinacea

Image: Amazon

According to Dogs Naturally magazine, echinacea can work wonders in helping to support your pet's immune system. However, it can be harmful for dogs who suffer from immune mediated diseases, so check with your vet.

You can buy echinacea formulated for dogs and cats on Amazon here.

6. Arnica

Always be sure to talk with your veterinarian if you have any concerns about your pet’s health. Some herbs and natural remedies that are completely safe for humans can be toxic to dogs and cats, so do your research before giving your pet something new. Just like with medications, allergic reactions can occur even if some herbs or remedies are technically considered safe.

Now we'll never know the truth about Katie Holmes & Jamie Foxx's romance

We've been trying to decode Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes' mysterious affair for three whole years, but now it seems we may never know the truth about what really went on between the two of them. At least not if Foxx has anything to do with it.

According to an inside source, Foxx has ended his relationship with Holmes — all because she wanted to shout their love from the mountain tops, and he isn't comfortable making things official.

"Jamie is tired of being pressured by Katie into going public," the source told radaronline.com. "He’s asked for a few months out and made no promise he’ll be available after that."

More: 7 Things Jamie Foxx and Katie Holmes have in common

The source also added that Foxx was into being with Holmes when it was "super-discreet," but once the media got hold of their coupling, he hated the scrutiny.

Holmes and Foxx have reportedly been dating on the down low since 2013, but both deny the relationship. However, they were spotted together on a date at a Barbara Streisand concert in August, and in June Foxx's good friend Claudia Jordan of Real Housewives of Atlanta fame accidentally confirmed that Foxx and Holmes are, indeed, an item.

"He is very happy with her," Jordan said during a podcast interview. "I like that he seems very happy."

Radar Online's insider reports that Holmes is extremely sad about the recent breakup, which makes it all the more sad.

"It’s heartbreaking for Katie, who would marry him in a heartbeat if he were keen," the insider revealed. "She’s hoping he’ll change his mind and come running back, which, to be fair, he’s done numerous times before."

Sure sounds like Foxx might not be saying goodbye for good, but just goodbye for now. Something tells us this couple isn't completely kaput.

What do you think? Are Foxx and Holmes dunzo, or will Foxx come back around?

Fantastic baby names for girls that start with F

Some baby names are a little more popular than others, of course, and there are also some beginning letters or sounds that are more common than others too. The letter F is a good example of a beginning letter that doesn't pop up a lot in baby names. In fact, there is only a small handful of girl names that show up in the top 1,000 names from 2015.

We think the letter F is pretty fabulous, though, so we dug a little deeper and went beyond the popular baby name lists to come up with these 30 gems.

These amazing girlie baby names cover just about any naming style you have. From exotic names to traditional monikers to unique names with a hippie vibe, you'll find it here. There are also a few virtue names here (such as the ever-popular Faith) and a token name from Norse mythology.

Which one of these totally fab baby names will make its way onto your baby name list?

Adele may be too much of a ‘nasty woman’ for Bruno Mars

Another collaboration between Bruno Mars and Adele is something we'd usually be extremely excited about (the pair previously worked on the track "All I Ask" together). Both artists are extremely talented and their voices are hauntingly beautiful, so it seems like a match made in heaven, right?

More: Adele apparently has one rule at her concerts: cameras down

Maybe not, because we're Mars made some comments about Adele she might not be too pleased about. During a press visit on KTU's Cubby & Carolina Bermudez In The Morning, Mars referred to her as a "diva."

He started off being very complimentary of Adele and her talent, saying, "She's incredible. There was a moment when she was singing in the booth – and I'm not exaggerating at all – and the water was vibrating... like, you know, that scene in Jurassic Park. She's got some pipes on her, and she's just a superstar."

But things took a turn when Mars revealed his first impression of Adele. He said, "She walks into the studio, she's got all this attitude, she's a diva, she's like, 'I don't want to do this. I don't like that.'" He continued, "And then as soon as we hit a couple chords that she liked, we started rolling, and that's where we got that song from."

So what if Adele had a few opinions on how she wanted the track to turn out? Is Mars really intimidated by that? She's got a strong voice — not just in the booth — but when she's expressing her opinions, and heck, she should. It's her career too. Adele is a serious artist, and if she has a vision she wants to uphold when it comes to her music, we say let the "nasty woman" run free!

That said, Mars did have other good things to say about Adele, and he definitely wants to work with her in the future.

5 sustainable materials to help your home go green

Many home owners are starting to become more aware of how and where the materials in their home are sourced, and want to invest in greener, more sustainable textiles, flooring, and home décor.

More: A contractor sold my roof for drug money while I was out of the country

Finding sustainably sourced items that suit your style and budget is easier than you might think. There are dozens of choices—from flooring to mattresses, bedding, and curtains—that, thanks to scientific and industrial advancements, are nearly the same price as more traditional options.

Here are five top choices for sustainable building and home décor materials to purchase when you want to reduce your carbon footprint and make your home more eco-friendly.

Bamboo

Bamboo is one of the most versatile sustainable materials available to homeowners, and also one of the most affordable. Its water resistance and durability make it a natural choice for flooring, since it will not stain or become damaged like many hardwoods when exposed to moisture or everyday friction. Bamboo is friendlier for the environment than hardwoods, since it grows extremely quickly and can be harvested frequently and with less impact.

Bamboo is also naturally anti-bacterial, which makes it an ideal fiber for making bedding and mattresses. Make sure to purchase only products labeled as 100 percent bamboo. Rayon made from bamboo has much more of an environmental impact, due to the fact that it is manufactured using carbon disulfide, which also strips the bamboo of its natural antibacterial qualities.

Cork

Cork is a buoyant, nearly impenetrable wood product made from the bark of the cork oak. Because the tree is not cut down during harvest and can continue to grow for up to 300 years, cork is very friendly for the environment and has gained popularity as a sustainable construction and home décor material.

Cork is used to make everything from bricks to doormats and bathroom flooring. Corkboard is also a great alternative to petrochemical-based insulation products, as it is non-allergenic, fire-retardant, and cannot be penetrated by water or air. Try recycling old wine stoppers to make DIY cork crafts and décor.

Recycled Polyester

Recycled Polyester, commonly referred to as rPET, is made from recycled plastics and unusable or worn out polyester fabrics. It’s a preferred material for environmentalists because it helps cut down on the demand for virgin polyester manufacturing, and the waste and byproducts associated with the industry. Though it’s a recycled material, its quality is comparable to virgin polyester, so it can be used to make the same products. The process of recycling polyester uses 33-53 percent less energy than it would to make virgin polyester.

Recycled polyester can be used to make curtains, slipcovers, bedding, rugs, and many other home décor staples.

Hemp

Hemp has been called a wonder fiber, and is known for being a carbon-negative alternative to cotton. It demands half as much land and water to grow as cotton, and the entire plant can be used — even the roots, which are used to make insulation. The hemp plant itself is a dream for sustainable farmers, as it grows easily in most climates and flourishes without the use of pesticides.

Hemcrete, hemp concrete, is a popular building material in Europe and has recently been adopted to make entire homes in the United States. Hemp can also be used to make textiles, carpet, rope, block and panel insulation, and even imitation hardwood flooring.

Wild Peace Silk

In traditional silk manufacturing, the moth is not allowed to leave its cocoon and is killed during the harvesting process. Wild peace silk is harvested after the silk moth has left its cocoon. It is a renewable textile, and is not treated with chemicals, making it a more sustainable choice for home décor.

Peace silk is a strong, beautiful fiber with slightly less sheen than traditional silk and small “nubs” that give the fabric texture. It can be used to make curtains, bedding, pillows, and other decorative items. Opt for wild silks labeled as “un-dyed” and “unbleached” to ensure that the silk has not been processed with chemicals.

Living a green lifestyle starts with simple choices like what materials you choose to incorporate when remodeling your home, or even just buying new accents to spruce up your existing home decor. Choose materials that are sustainably sourced, minimally processed, recycled, or use as little energy as possible to manufacture. These green materials are a great place to start, but there are dozens of sustainable options at affordable prices on the market.

Kristen Stewart & her girlfriend St. Vincent are already getting serious

Kristen Stewart and her new girlfriend Annie Clark, better known by her stage name St. Vincent, haven't been dating for long, but things are already getting serious.

More: OK, the Kristen Stewart & Robert Pattinson baby rumors are a little much

Stewart is totally smitten with Clark, and the pair have been pretty much "inseparable since they started dating," a source told Hollywood Life. "Now that they are back in LA, Kristen has been introducing Annie to all of her friends, including her mom and dad. She introduces Annie as her girlfriend, and she's definitely not shy about being affectionate with her around her family."

The pair is rumored to have first hooked up earlier this month after they both found themselves single (St. Vincent had been dating Cara Delevingne for more than a year, and Stewart was in a relationship with Alicia Cargile). And they've already taken their rumored romance public. Stewart brought St. Vincent to the New York Film Festival premiere of Certain Women, and on Monday, Oct. 24, the pair sat side-by-side at the Elle Women in Hollywood Awards at dinner at the Four Seasons in Beverly Hills, E! News reports.

More: We love that Kristen Stewart loves her girlfriend so publicly

Although the couple has been together for less than a month, Stewart has reportedly never been happier.

"Annie lives in NYC, but Kristen has told her that she will always have a second home in LA. They just do things that normal couples do, like cook dinner at home, and take long walks with Kristen's dogs," the source said. "Kristen has never looked happier or more in love."

By the sounds of this report, Stewart and St. Vincent seem pretty serious about each other, and they've certainly made no attempt to hide their affections (they've been spotted together several times, and were snapped holding hands). Could this be one Hollywood romance that's going to last? We hope so.

I thought only lazy dog owners used pee mats — I couldn't have been more wrong

$

0

I have a confession — I’ve been wrongly judging people for years. If you told me a few months ago that I would be the proud owner of a doggy pee mat, I would have rolled my eyes at you and walked away. I thought pee mats were for owners too lazy to take their dogs outside or for people who had to leave their dogs home for long periods of time or — worst of all in my (biased) opinion — for tiny, yappy dogs too spoiled to go outside or walk on their own legs.

I’m changing my tune now that I have a pee mat in the corner.

In case you have no idea what I am talking about, I’ll fill you in. Pee mats are basically indoor potty places for your dog to pee or poop. Manufacturers have all sorts of names for them, but everyone I know calls it a pee mat. Some people use them to housebreak their dogs. Others, like me, use them as an indoor alternative to accidents.

More: Dealing with dog dementia: what it could mean for your senior pup

I put my “pet potty” judgments on hold when my senior dog started having accidents. On top of getting up there in years, she also has Cushing’s disease, which causes her to urinate more frequently (approximately every hour). She went from being a perfectly housebroken dog to having accidents on a daily basis. To save our floors, we got a pee mat.

The plan was to phase the pee mat out if we could get her medication up to a point where she stopped having accidents. By the time that happened, however, we were hooked.

To top off old age and Cushing's, she also has terrible hip dysplasia and our apartment is on the second floor. Asking her to go up and down the stairs in her condition eight times a day (or more) just didn’t seem fair, even though I work from home and would be happy to accommodate her. The pee mat makes her life much more comfortable, from offering her instant relief from bladder pressure to sparing her hips a flight of stairs.

More: My dog's dry skin turned out to be a serious medical condition

Here’s the thing — pee mats are not actually that convenient. Outside, urine is soaked up by the grass, and all owners have to do is pick up their dog's poop. With a pee mat, you need to dump it and clean it at least once a day unless you like the smell of dog pee. Now that I know this, I’ve realized that personal convenience is not the reason people put pee mats in their homes. Their pet's comfort is.

Our pee mat is my senior dog’s best friend. It allows her to relieve herself whenever she needs to and saves her the pain of going upstairs and downstairs, which means she gets to take fewer pain pills. I am not being dramatic when I say it has radically improved her quality of life. Hands down, the pee mat was the best money I’ve spent on my dog — ever.

There may be a Clinton supporter in the Duggar family after all

$

It should come as no surprise that the Duggars seem firmly on the Trump train this election season.

More: Jim Bob Duggar needs to butt out of his daughters' courtships

After all, this is the family that not only allowed sexual assault to happen in their own home, but did everything they could to cover it up and keep Josh Duggar, an admitted sexual predator, from facing any repercussions for molesting his sisters. Then, when the secret got out years later, the family tried to brush it off like it was the normal behavior of a curious teenage boy.

Obviously, it would be no problem to this family that nearly a dozen women have now accused Trump of sexual assault. And the fact that Trump was caught on tape admitting that he forces himself on women because he's famous? Why would they take issue with that, either?

Still, Trump is a controversial enough figure that most of the Duggars are staying quiet about the election — except for Derick Dillard, that is. On Tuesday, he confirmed his plans to vote for Trump with a tweet, responding to a fan who asked, saying he was planning to vote "Trump Pence."

He followed it up with a later tweet defending his decision, writing, "Voting for Trump doesn't = condoning his lifestyle. It just means agreeing with more of his policies than Clinton's."

More: Jana Duggar deserves more than her sheltered life

But one of the Duggars may be wavering in his support for the Republican ticket.

Jessa's husband, Ben Seewald, hasn't definitively picked a side, but he's been critical of Trump.

"Trump's 2005 remarks about women is completely contrary to everything that we believe in as Christians," Seewald tweeted, later adding, "Evangelicals don’t trust Clinton with SCOTUS or executive orders and Trump with nuclear codes or our wives."

Seewald has also, in a really bizarre twist, expressed support for the Black Lives Matter movement —something Republicans decry almost across the board. Could there actually be a closet Clinton supporter in the Duggar family?

Other family members haven't announced whom they're supporting, so maybe, just maybe, the family is split heading into the presidential election.

Do you think any of the Duggars would actually vote for Hillary Clinton?

The FBI's still pushing to bring assault charges against Brad Pitt

Despite some reports saying otherwise, it looks like Brad Pitt's fight against child abuse allegations may not be over.

More: Brad Pitt's divorce 'mistake' was actually carefully planned

Now, a source is opening up about the four-hour interview his estranged wife, Angelina Jolie, had with FBI officials after the alleged incident in which sources say Pitt got drunk on the family's private plane and got into an altercation with his oldest son, Maddox.

"The agents wanted a breakdown of everything that happened from when the plane took off to when it landed," the insider said. "They’re looking into charges of assault."

Another source added that Jolie fully cooperated during the interview. She filed for divorce from Pitt just days after the incident was said to have taken place.

More: Welp, Brad Pitt's former bodyguard basically just kicked him while he's down

According to Us Weekly, the Los Angeles County Department of Children and Family Services is also still investigating Pitt. While the investigations are ongoing, the temporary parenting plan that has allowed Jolie to have custody of their six kids so far has been extended and remains in place. Reports say the kids have been having supervised visits with Pitt and a therapist.

Pitt has been holding off on filing a legal response to Jolie's divorce petition because, sources say, they want to keep their battle out of the courts for now.

"Neither side wants this to go to court because everything the FBI and DCFS investigated will potentially be made available to the public, which would be bad for the entire family," an insider explained.

That source also said that the FBI has interviewed members of the crew that was onboard the flights, and it could be months before the investigation wraps up and prosecutors decide whether they want to bring charges against Pitt.

Filing for divorce apparently doesn't mean Scottie & Larsa Pippen are over

Is it just me or does it seem like celebrities are filing for divorce quite a bit lately... and not really meaning it?

More: The FBI's still pushing to bring assault charges against Brad Pitt

Michael Douglas and Catherine Zeta-Jones. Dennis and Kimberly Quaid. Patrick and Jill Dempsey. They've all filed for divorce and then ended up reconciling. And now, apparently Scottie and Larsa Pippen are on the same path.

Scottie Pippen, a former NBA player, filed for divorce from his Real Housewives of Miami star wife last week. But now, reports are conflicting about whether he ever had any real plans to go through with it.

The Huffington Post spoke with Larsa's rep, who was pretty sure the couple is headed toward reconciling.

More: Kate Gosselin made some downright shocking claims about Jon to police

"The tension between [Scottie and Larsa] started months ago during the playoffs when Scottie brought another woman to a playoff game. Scottie has been married to Larsa for almost two decades and has had no problems with her social media," the rep said. "He’s sending her messages. They’re communicating. I don’t think they’re going to pull the trigger. He was saying, 'I miss you. Let’s talk.'"

If it's true that Scottie never actually meant to get divorced, then why even file and claim your marriage is "irretrievably broken?" He also filed for sole custody of all four of their children, which seems like it would just add insult to injury if he never actually planned to go through with the divorce.

And can we say... getting the kids involved? Yikes. There has to be a better way to settle an argument than to put the whole family through something like this. Maybe, I don't know, adulting and talking through things?
