All the presidents' kids offer up awesome baby naming options

0
0

Maybe it's possible to raise a born leader, if you name your baby after one of our presidents' kids.

The names presidents have chosen for their children are not only inspiring, they range from classic to beautiful to unique. A throwback pick, like Jimmy Carter's son Donnell, or a more modern choice, like Barack Obama's daughter Sasha, may be the perfect moniker for your baby boy or girl. And with the upcoming election keeping us busy, presidential baby names have more significance than ever.

Many presidents had children with the same names — John, for example, appeared in the families of several presidents — so we simply listed the first appearance of each name. But you can attest that some names are traditional, some probably won’t be used any time soon and some are unusual enough to be making a comeback.

31 high-protein snacks that make you feel strong, energetic and healthy

0

If you want glowing skin, shiny hair and strong nails (and not to feel like total crap after 3 p.m. each day), then you want more protein in your life — from as many healthy sources as possible. We talk a lot about protein when it comes to food. It's the main component that makes up our organs, muscles and tissues, and critical processes in the body, like digestion and metabolism, depend on it. Making sure you get enough protein at key points throughout the day can prevent that dreaded afternoon energy crash and may also help your body fight off infection and disease.

More: 20 low-carb one-pot dinners warm and cozy enough for fall

But as so many of us have learned the hard way, strict high-protein diets can get boring, fast. Fortunately tastier options do exist beyond plain egg whites and canned tuna. Here is the hit list of nutritiously delicious, simple snacks that are packed with good-quality protein and are under 200 calories per serving.

Snacks with 5 grams of protein or more

Top 10 large dog breeds that prove bigger is better

0
0

Big dogs may need more room and can require a little extra care, but big dog owners know that with a larger breed, you're getting more to love. According to the latest 2015-2016 survey from the American Pet Products Association, most Americans own small dogs, at an estimated 50 percent, but big dogs come in close second. About 37 percent of households own a larger breed, as a companion, a guard dog or even an oversized playmate for the kids.

Here are 10 adorable dog breeds that are truly larger than life.

10. Bernese mountain dog

We can thank the Swiss for many great things: fine chocolate, luxury watches... and the Bernese mountain dog. This dog has become extremely popular throughout the years, recognizable because of its affectionate personality and keen intelligence.

More: 20 Dogs that dig the cold weather

Regal looking with its long, silky, tri-colored fur, the Bernese mountain dog is a true outdoors dog that, as its name might imply, fares well in cold weather. Ever patient and loyal, this large dog breed would make a great addition to any family with children, despite having a potential height of 23 to 28 inches and a weight of up to 110 pounds. Just note that due to their propensity to develop cancer, their life expectancy is only about 6 to 8 years, and they should be regularly screened by a qualified vet.

9. Collie

It'd be very difficult to not mention Lassie when talking about collies, so there. Now that that's out of the way, collies are a very popular breed of large dog, not only for their obvious ties to classic literature and film, but for their sharp minds and friendly natures. These loyal dogs rarely show signs of aggression unless their owners are in need of protection. Equally fearless and gentle, the collie is good with kids and can be the ideal addition to a happy family.

They can get as tall as 2 feet and weigh 50 to 70 pounds, making them slightly smaller than the Bernese.

Next Up: More top 10 large dog breeds - Mastiff

8. Mastiff

Mastiff

If you've ever seen a mastiff, you'll agree that there is one word that can properly size up its appearance: powerful. No kidding, this dog is huge — not as tall as a Great Dane but probably twice as thick at between 2 and 3 feet tall with a weight of between 130 and 220 pounds.

Fittingly, these dogs make excellent guard dogs. Though the mastiff seems beast-like, it is surprisingly affectionate, gentle and extremely loyal. Their devotion to their owners and patience with children have secured their popularity for years, though they must be properly socialized to get along well with children and other pets, and it's best if you don't have them around very small children or adults who are frail as they can easily knock them over, causing serious injuries. Their life span is generally between 6 and 10 years, but some have lived as long as 18 years.

7. Great Dane

Monumental in size and personality, the Great Dane towers over other large breeds at just over 2-feet to almost 3-feet tall.

Often thought to be the world's tallest dog, only the Irish wolfhound can claim to be taller.

More: 17 Great Dane puppies that are so, so cute (PHOTOS)

Great Danes are gentle giants, calm and friendly despite their intimidating size. If you want to make sure you don't get one of the really huge ones, opt for a female — males can get up to 200 pounds, but females generally top out at 115 pounds. They do require love, attention and plenty of space to exercise those long limbs, though, so they're ideal if you have a big backyard. They're great with kids, but beware that you're probably investing in a 100 to 200 pound lapdog.

6. German short-haired pointer

A true hunting dog, the German short-haired pointer is bold, intelligent, strong and playful.

The German short-haired pointer requires lots of exercise and attention. If properly trained, the GSP makes the ideal companion for owners with an active lifestyle and a love for the outdoors. Otherwise, this headstrong breed may prove to be too much of a challenge for a first-time owner.

If you do love the outdoors, the GSP is good with kids, though it may just be a bit too feisty for very little ones, although at only about 2-feet tall and up to 70 pounds, this fur baby is a bit smaller for the large breed fan who's not willing to commit to one of the previous adorable monsters.

Next Up: More top 10 large dog breeds - Rottweiler

{pageBreak}

5. Rottweiler

rottweiler
Image: Kusadasi-Guy/Flickr

Despite the negative attention received due to its portrayal as a mean dog in television and film, the rottweiler remains a highly popular breed.

Here's why: Historically a herding dog, the rottweiler's natural obedience makes it adaptable to several roles — just as capable of being a guard dog as assisting as a service dog. Extremely intelligent and good-natured, the rottweiler is naturally attentive and very loyal to its family.

That said, rotties are best in homes with older kids who know how to interact with dogs. Since they are herding dogs, small children can easily get knocked over when the pup tries to herd them with leans and nudges.

These dogs are stout, generally around 2-feet tall but weighing as much as 130 pounds, and live between 8 and 11 years.

Next Up: More top 10 large dog breeds - Standard poodle

{pageBreak}

4. Standard poodle

Standard poodle
Image: Tracy out west/Flickr

It's no wonder the standard poodle is often a contributing factor to some cocktails of "designer mutts." Superiorly intelligent, training the standard poodle is a breeze. It is naturally inclined to be a crowd-pleaser — you'll be hard-pressed to find an unsatisfied owner of a standard poodle. Just be prepared to devote oodles of attention and playtime to your pet if you ever choose to become the proud owner of a poodle.

More: 13 Things only poodle owners know

Usually only about 2-feet tall, they still only weigh in between 40 and 75 pounds. Better yet, they have one of the longer life spans of larger dogs, often living as long as some smaller dogs, at about 15 years. Even better, they're generally good with kids, though they may need some extra help accepting a new animal in the house if they're used to being the only four-legged friend.

Next Up: More top 10 large dog breeds - Golden retriever

{pageBreak}

3. Golden retriever

Though named as such for their distinctively silky, gold-colored tresses, golden retrievers could have easily earned their name for having a heart of gold.

Friendly to both owners and strangers alike, these dogs are renowned for their compatibility with children. Golden retrievers are primarily indoor pets but do require a daily dose of exercise running around the yard. About 2-feet tall, they aren't as weighty as some of the dogs on this list, generally capping out at about 75 pounds. They also live a long life for a dog at around 11 years or so.

Plus... how could you resist that adorable face?

2. German shepherd

Image: gomagoti/Flickr

Keenly intelligent and eager to serve, it's no wonder these dogs are commonly seen in service roles and working alongside policemen.

One of the most well-rounded pets out there, the German shepherd is highly versatile and can make for a loving family member as well as a trusted guardian. Generally trustworthy with children, they still need to be well-socialized with them, and small children should always be supervised around dogs of this size.

Next Up: More top 10 large dog breeds - Labrador retriver

{pageBreak}

1. Labrador retriever

Labrador retreiver
Image: OakleyOriginals/Flickr

What can be said about the Labrador retriever that hasn't been said? The fact that the Lab placed No. 1 in the American Kennel Club's registration lists for 18 consecutive years speaks a lot for itself.

Equally excellent at being a working or companion dog, the Lab's intelligence and lovable personality make this breed the most popular dog in the world, regardless of size. They're usually about 2-feet tall, weigh 55 to 80 pounds and live a pretty long time, about 11 years.

These are one of the best dog breeds if you have kids. They aren't just accepting of kids — they seem to enjoy the chaos and often willingly submit to whatever humiliation kids dole out (like wearing crazy hats). They can also be great with other pets if properly socialized.

9 gross reasons you shouldn't bring your pet to bed with you

0
0

It catches most people off guard to hear that sleeping with your pet may not be the greatest idea. After all, isn't companionship the reason you got your furry friend in the first place?

But when it comes to your health, think twice before you let your pet snuggle up beneath the sheets with you. It may be bringing along more than warmth and love — your cute and cuddly cat or dog probably harbors some germs, bacteria and bugs. If you do let your pet sleep with you at night, here's what you may be inviting into your bed with you.

1. Bubonic plague

Yep, you read that right. The bubonic plague is no longer sweeping the streets of Europe, but it's still out there, and you can catch it from your pet. In fact, between 1977 and 1998, 23 documented human cases of the bubonic plague were attributed to family cats. And it's not just the feline that puts us at risk. Dogs can carry plague-infested fleas without showing signs of the disease themselves.

2. Parasites

Can we all just share a collective "eww!"? Parasites, most commonly roundworms and hookworms (but there are lots of other equally nasty offenders out there, too), are common in dogs and cats according to the CDC. Mostly, these parasites lay their eggs in your pet's hair, where they can easily be shed onto your sheets. Who wants to sleep with those eggs getting ready to hatch right next to you?

More: Why is my dog barking at night?

3. Staph infections

We all know what these are, right? Infections caused by the staphylococcus bacteria — including the well-known antibiotic-resistant MRSA — can be transferred to humans through their pets.

4. Other bacterial infections

That whole rumor about your pets' mouths being super-clean is nothing more than an old wives' tale according to WebMD. In fact, the mouths of dogs and cats — and other carnivorous animals — are full of bacteria-laden saliva that can lead to extreme sickness in humans, including meningitis and pasteurellosis.

More: 16 Quiet dog breeds so you can have some peace and quiet

5. Cat-scratch disease

Cat Scratch Fever is not just a song by Ted Nugent. It's a real disease carried by cats that often show no signs of infection. It's most often transmitted to humans through bites, scratches and licks from a cat, and according to WebMD, you're more likely to get it if your cat sleeps in your bed.

6. Fecal matter

It's time to face the facts. If your dog is like most dogs, it either steps in, plays with or eats (yuck!) poop. And when your dog comes into your house, and your bed, it tracks the poop right along with it. Not only is this gross, but it's an easy way to transmit parasites and bacteria like E. coli and salmonella. Veterinarian Dr. Carol Osborne recommends spritzing off your dog’s feet with a 50/50 mixture of rubbing alcohol and water when it comes inside to help decontaminate its paws.

More: 11 Reasons small dogs are better than big dogs

7. Ticks

You know you can get a tick from a walk in the woods, but did you know you can also get one from your dog? If it has one in its fur and comes to bed with you, the tick might just latch onto you instead of your dog. "Ticks carry many diseases contagious to people, a few of the more notable being Lyme disease, Rocky Mountain spotted fever and Anaplasmosis," said Osborne. "Ticks are especially common in Great Lakes Regions where they are endemic."

8. Mites

These tiny little bugs are no fun for dogs or humans, and you could be sharing them if you share a bed. "The most common is the mange mite, causing human scabies, which as the name implies is very contagious to people," said Osborne.

9. Fleas

You sleep with a dog, you get fleas. We've all heard this before, and right now, I mean it in the most literal sense. Once upon a time, a flea-infested bed was probably your worst nightmare as a pet owner. Seems kind of like small stuff now, doesn't it?

Maureen McCormick on Dancing with the Stars makes me fangirl Marcia Brady all over again

0
0

When I saw the list for this fall’s cast of Dancing with the Stars, I did my own little happy dance. Marcia, Marcia, Marcia … sitcom icon and ultimate teen girl, Maureen McCormick (aka Marcia Brady) is a contestant.

More: 10 roles that made me fall in love with Rob Lowe all over again

Was there ever a more enviable fictional high school girl than Marcia Brady? I think in the 1970s the only one that even came close was Laurie Partridge (her family was in a band and drove around in a multi-colored bus so that was pretty cool.) But I have to give the crown to Marcia, which she could proudly display atop her gorgeous blond hair. Long and frizz free, her beautiful mane that she brushed 100 times before bed is just one of the many reasons I loved her.

Here are the other reasons:

Her fantastic family

The Brady Bunch made a big family look like an everyday co-ed slumber party. She had sisters, she had brothers and she had a Jack and Jill bathroom where they could meet to discuss important stuff. She puts family first by withdrawing from the class president race and by letting Greg have the attic room because he is older.

Incredible healing abilities

Several years ago, I got hit in the nose (and in fact did say, “Oh my nose!” when it happened.) Unlike Marcia the swelling did not go down in a few days. I missed the dance (actually it was a Bar Mitzvah that weekend) and had to have surgery to fix the broken bone. Not Marcia, her adorable nose was back to normal in a few days – just in time for her to realize that she should go with her original date.

She met Davy Jones

The Monkees lead singer Davy Jones was positively dreamy. As president of his local fan club, Marcia says that she can get him to appear at the school dance. But it turns out that Marcia has over promised. Just as she is about to admit to their dance committee that she has failed them, the big swoon happens – Davy Jones is at her front door. She also meets cutie Desi Arnaz Jr. in season one – lucky girl!

More: Should we really be excited that girls are posting Instagram pics of greasy food?

She can keep a secret

Marcia wants to nominate her new stepdad Mike for a Father of the Year contest in the local newspaper. Her quest becomes difficult as there are a series of misunderstandings and she winds up breaking some house rules and getting punished. But even being told she is grounded and will miss the family ski trip does not push her to divulge her secret. In the end, Mike wins and it’s group hugs all around.

She can sing

Yep, Marcia has lead vocals in several episodes where the Brady Bunch sings. Take that Laurie Partridge! Now let’s hope she can dance.

On Monday, Vanderpump Rules fans were given some exciting news when not only a premiere date for Season 5 was released (Monday, Nov. 7), but a brand new trailer was unveiled. After what seems like way too long of a hiatus, it's good to know the drama-filled Bravo series is returning right around the corner.

More: Vanderpump Rules' Schwartz and Sandoval make a permanently bad decision

Based on the trailer, there are going to be some crazy moments, which is expected, right? When there aren't fights, gossip and rumors spreading like wildfire, there are also actually some happy moments. Yes, Tom Schwartz and Katie Maloney's wedding is featured. Plus, it appears that Schwartz and Tom Sandoval shippers have a lot to look forward to.

There are many Schwartz and Sandoval broments in the Season 5 trailer proving these two really do make the best of friends and will forever be connected at the hip. To celebrate their bromance, first watch the trailer below, and then scroll through the following list to see a few of the times Schwartz and Sandoval's friendship was unlike anything you've ever seen.

You ready for even more goodness from the Toms? Good, let's get to it.

1. When they got tattoos

Schwartz & Sandoval tats

Remember when Sandoval and Schwartz got tattoos in Las Vegas? Schwartz's wasn't horrible, but the same can't be said for Sandoval's bacon-looking tat.

2. Whenever they cried together

Sandoval tears

As you can see above, Sesaon 5 will feature many Sandoval tears. Based on the trailer, it sure looks like Sandoval is crying for Schwartz. He's just an emotional guy.

3. When Sandoval defended Schwartz

Tom Sandoval

Don't ever put down Schwartz, because you'll receive the wrath of Sandoval. That's what happened when Jax Taylor argued with Schwartz. Sandoval wasn't having any of it and defended his BFF.

4. When Sandoval couldn't help but be proud

Sandoval and Jax Taylor

This is another moment from the Season 5 trailer. Could Sandoval be happier for his pal getting married? Also, it sure looks like he's crying — again.

5. Whenever they kissed

Like in the Season 5 trailer, Sandoval and Schwartz have kissed on multiple occasions. They're just really close, OK?

6. Whenever they did "business"

Tom Schwartz

In one of their most embarrassing moments on Pump Rules, Sandoval and Schwartz approached Lisa Vanderpump to become part of her LVP Sangria line. Their proposal did not go well.

7. Whenever they tried to do "business" again

Tom Sandoval

Again, they just don't know how to business, especially when it comes to working with Vanderpump. It sure makes for one entertaining moment, though.

8. When they channeled the '70s

Sandoval and Schwartz, '70s

This is how they showed up to Scheana Shay's 30th birthday party. When there is a theme, they commit. FYI, they even wore roller skates.

9. When they got beautified

Sandoval and Schwartz's hair is very important to them and they aren't afraid to admit it.

10. When Sandoval impersonated Schwartz

Tom Sandoval
Image: Tumblr

They know each other so well impersonations just come naturally. It's kind of scary how much Sandoval sounds like Schwartz.

11. Whenever they went to Vegas

Sandoval, Schwartz and Jax
Image: Tumblr

Their Las Vegas trips never disappoint and it's also a great way for Sandoval and Schwartz's bond to grow. For example, they become very comfortable with nudity and rubbing their asses on one another, because what else says friendship?

12. When they messed with one another

Tom Sandoval
Image: Giphy

Only good friends are allowed to mess with each other, especially when Schwartz is scared of needles and Sandoval can't help but use that to his advantage.

13. When this happened

Schwartz and Sandoval
Image: Bravo

This is from the Season 5 trailer and just further proof that Schwartz and Sandoval are very comfortable around each other.

14. When they snuggled

They're basically the Ross Geller and Joey Tribbiani of Pump Rules.

Who else can't wait to see what Schwartz and Sandoval get up to in Season 5 when it returns Monday, Nov. 7 at 9/8c on Bravo? Me too. Me too.

Sorry, but diet is not a bad word

0
0

The word diet gets such a bad rap because everyone immediately assumes a diet equals some sort of boring, or tortuous restrictive eating plan in order to lose extra pounds or unwanted body fat. Come on, if we’re honest most of us can admit that we’ve at the minimum, contemplated going on some type of restrictive food plan or cutting out certain food groups in order to slim down, or change our bodies. But here’s the thing, the word diet itself does not mean restrictive eating, rather it’s the entire system for which we fuel our bodies, and it impacts not only how we feel but how we perform.

More: I had a 'vampire facial' and it was better than a facelift

We need to shift our way of thinking about diets. I’ve experimented with just about every form of eating under the sun while training for different events and here are a couple of personal examples. I hope that by sharing my own experiences, you can save on some of the mistakes I made.

The figure diet debacle

I had just stepped down from my crazy management title and suddenly had too much free time on my hands. (I was an athlete in college and function best with a hectic schedule and structure – too much free time and I feel paralyzed. I’m sure some of you know exactly what I mean.) I decided to throw myself into a figure competition while working as a personal trainer at a gym – talk about long days and strict structures. My goal was to build muscle, lean out, and be as symmetrical as possible in three months. My diet consisted of lean protein, veggies, and a sprinkle of olive oil, rice and/or sweet potatoes. Fruit was almost nonexistent (too much sugar) zero drops of alcohol, pasta was a huge no-no, and my social life was practically nonexistent.

I felt OK, but the brain fog and mood swings towards the end were a real struggle due to low carbs and fat combined with super long days. I was tired and it was hard to focus. I looked great, and performed well during my workouts but I didn’t feel great. I felt deprived. I love donuts (apple fritters are my favorite), missed hanging out with my girlfriends, and really struggled with the overall food and lifestyle restrictions this diet and competition required. I still cringe at the sight of food in tupperware containers! For me this diet was a no-go. Too many diet restrictions meant I was saying no or I can't, all the time and that was anything but the vibrant, joyous lifestyle I wanted to live.

My runner diet debacle

Since the figure competition lifestyle wasn’t for me, I decided the Chicago marathon would be my next training endeavor. The goal: Train my body to run 26.2 miles in four hours or less, and minimal food restrictions would be required. Pasta, and donuts (sometimes) were back in eating rotation. I could finally say yes to dinner with friends and the occasional adult beverage!

I was no longer moody due to my restricted carb intake, but I spent a lot of time running up and down the Chicago lakefront. I remember doing my 20 mile run solo – River North to Hyde Park and back after a full morning of training clients. Talk about a tough one – between training clients, running, and getting back in the social swing of things I didn’t have much time to weight train. The lack of lifting had a significant negative impact on my body. All that running broke down the muscle I had worked so hard to build a few months prior. Despite having flexibility in my diet, the workout regimen required by the marathon made me dislike my physical appearance (thin and soft) and the constant pounding took a toll on my body. It was time to try something else.

A balanced diet for the win

Fast forward about nine years and I’ve discovered that diet does not need to mean restricting or torturing yourself. Rather it is different for everyone and I have finally found a balance and a positive relationship with food and my diet. Feeling good and having the energy to perform doesn’t have to revolve around what you can and can’t have.

Focusing on what I put into my body and how it makes me feel has truly been the key to helping me find my diet balance. Honestly, this whole idea of diet and restricting ourselves from everything under the sun is enough to make anyones head spin. We are all different – you might have a better relationship with gluten and grains – and that’s awesome! You might be a super triathlete or swimmer and then I guarantee you’ll need more calories for fuel than I do – which makes complete sense. When I’m putting in more miles, I increase my carb intake a little. When I was in my friend’s wedding, I leaned out by increasing my lifts and eating mostly lean meats, veggies, and avocados. I know my body and I’ve found what works for me.

The key is not to associate the concept of diet with a negative, one size fits all approach. It was through trial and error that I learned that a good diet is really whatever combination of nutrition that empowers you to feel good, be your best and conquer your life!

Scrumptious German sweets from Aldi you must scoop up before the holidays

0
0

My love affair with Aldi is well-documented. I love them for their low prices, their quality products, their better-than-Girl Scout cookies for $1.29 and their sparkling bathrooms. (Really — I’ve yet to see a bad one. Easily in my top five places to pee when I’m out and about.)

More: You need to shop at Aldi, and here's why

One of the ways Aldi keeps its prices low is by stocking a limited number of products, allowing its inventory to be turned over quickly. This means every few weeks its specialty items change, and this month is spectacularly exciting — and I mean spectacularly. It's bringing in fall by sending over tons of goods from its motherland of Germany, meaning we have entered chocolate-covered paradise, everybody! Here’s what you need to pick up before fall leaves us, taking these German delights with it…

More: 10 things you must buy at Aldi

Moser Roth dark German chocolate

Founded in 1841, now producing only for Aldi, Moser Roth makes chocolate that's creamy and luxurious, and you know what? Just buy all the chocolate. Seriously, buy yourself a chest freezer, go dump all the chocolate boxes into your cart, and hoard them like a squirrel with PMS.

Dark chocolate Wafer Rolls

Image: Aldi

It’s like an ice cream cone dipped in dark chocolate, except that they’re tiny little roll-ups. You can stick one on each finger, top them with a melon ball scoop of Ben & Jerry’s, and pretend you’re Edward Icecreamhands. It’s surprisingly a good time.

Chocolate-covered marzipan

chocolate covered marzipan
Image: Aldi

I believe marzipan is the world’s most adorable food. It makes me think of sweet old ladies who wear nice hats and pearls, who have small dogs and perfectly kept living rooms, where they’d invite you to sit and enjoy a cup of tea, then pull out a small tin from a sideboard and offer you “a bit of marzipan” with a devilish wink. Pretty much the queen of England. I think the queen of England has a DL candy addiction, and marzipan is her drug of choice, because it’s sweet and lovely like she is, but also has a teensy bit of bitterness hiding in the background, because if you cross the queen of England, she will fuck you up and then laugh as her corgis devour you alive. Marzipan is both adorable and an assertion of dominance.

Chocolate-covered Stollen

chocolate covered stollen
Image: Aldi

Stollen is a German fruited yeast cake that is filled with marzipan, traditionally only eaten at Christmas. Aldi has dipped them in chocolate, released them in September and made them miniature so you can put an entire cake into your mouth. You need to open up really, really wide to get it in there, but it's absolutely doable when you apply yourself.

Orange Jaffa Cakes

orange jaffa cakes
Image: Aldi

I’ve been told that Jaffa Cakes are to Europe as Oreos are to America. Jaffa Cakes look like cookies, but they’re a soft sponge cake covered in jam and dipped in chocolate, so they’re absolutely nothing like Oreos. Not even a tiny bit close. The marmalade is a wee bit bitter, but as a whole it’s sweet, which I like a lot. I would rather eat a sleeve of these at a clip while watching Netflix than most of those other, plebeian supermarket cookies. It just feels fancier.

A. This does not have any chocolate, but I still tested it because I love me a good strudel.

B. It’s not like you can’t cover this in chocolate after you cook it. Ideas like this are why I’m a C-list celebrity chef.

C. The cooking directions on this item are completely wrong, and I burned it.

D. I still ate it, and it was awesome.

E. Bake it at 400 degrees F for only 25 minutes, then let me know how they taste, because I've spent the past two days eating nothing but German snack foods, and my heart doesn’t feel well enough to handle more grocery shopping.

Haven't tried this yet, but it's marzipan, so...

In case it comes back: Choceur White Chocolate Coconut Crunch

This one has officially already blown off the shelves, unless you happen to get lucky and find a package still lingering. At any rate, keep this in mind in case you find anything white chocolate at Aldi.

You may have heard before that white chocolate is not chocolate. This is true — it's not made from the cacao plant's chocolate solids but rather from the cocoa butter left over from the chocolate-making products. What you might not know is that most white chocolate isn’t even good white chocolate!

Most of the cocoa butter ends up being replaced by cheaper fats, like vegetable shortening, which is why most brands taste like poo. In fact, the FDA says candy needs to contain only 20 percent cocoa butter to be called white chocolate. German people are having none of this. After one luxurious bite of this bar, studded with flecks of sweet toasted coconut and crunchy cornflakes, you can understand what a difference true cocoa butter makes. You’ll feel bad for poor, maligned white chocolate. It’s not its fault that greedy candy barons have been besmirching its name. Maybe you should buy a few extra bars, just to let it know you finally understand it. White chocolate will appreciate the sentiment.

Also: Schogetten Caramel Brownie Squares

It’s like a Caramello, but they also fill it with those chocolate crunchies that are in the middle of Carvel cakes. This is so brilliant I’m sort of pissed off that the American chocolate industry hasn’t been doing this for my entire life. Also officially off shelves now, but again, keep a sharp eye out, and you may get lucky.

This is the fall selection, readers. One can only imagine what Aldi will send out for the holidays. Be ready.

The Voice's Simone Gundy is bringing it for the single moms this season

The cynics love to complain about sob stories being a dime a dozen on The Voice, but with so many terrible things happening in the world, I like to see people who have managed to rise above their circumstances and make the best of a difficult situation. Tonight, I witnessed exactly that when Simone Gundy took the stage. Her story may not be the show's most memorable, but it does serve as a reminder that single moms do not have to give up on their life goals.

More: Child star Billy Gilman is ready to make his comeback on The Voice

Gundy loved singing when she was young, but her dream of making it big as a musician was put on hold when she gave birth to her son at age 15. Now, she's 26 years old and ready to give it another go.

Simone Gundy
Image: NBC

These days, Gundy works full-time at a solar company and spends the rest of her time doting on her son and boyfriend. She's managed to keep her musical dreams alive, but making it in a cut-throat industry is tough when you have next to no free time.Thankfully, she has an amazing support group, consisting of her son (of course) and her boyfriend, who consistently pushes her to shoot for her dreams.

More: The Voice judges should have turned their chairs for Zack Hicks

Viewers have Gundy's boyfriend to thank for tonight's amazing performance of "I Who Have Nothing," for without his encouragement, she might not have bothered to try for a spot on the show.

Miley Cyrus

It really is too bad that Gundy has been forced to put her career on the back burner until now; she is an absolutely amazing singer! The judges clearly thought so, as two of them turned their chairs around almost immediately. Miley Cyrus was especially enthusiastic; she claimed to have "cold chills," adding that the performance felt less like an audition and more like the type of concert you shell out big bucks to see. But despite all of Cyrus' praise, Gundy ultimately chose Team Adam.

More: Ladies, we need to talk about Alicia Keys' The Voice debut

I am so excited to see more of Simone Gundy on The Voice. Her voice is amazing, her story is inspiring and her smile is lovely. I'm sure she has great things in store.

TRL takes a stand for the minority vote because protests aren't enough

0

Raise your hand if TRL was your jam during the late '90s and early 2000s. Me, too! Naturally, I was psyched when I learned that the show would be returning, albeit just for one night.

But there's a twist this time: It's no longer Total Request Live — it's Total Registration Live. I love the idea. Why not use this generation's most influential stars to get people excited to vote? They certainly did a good job of getting people on social media pumped.

More: TRL and 9 other shows we never thought would end

While stars such as Joss Whedon and a few of our favorites from Stranger Things discussed a variety of issues, there was one definite theme to the night: racial justice. The topic came up again and again when celebrities were asked which issues were most influential in getting them out to vote. It became abundantly clear that the shootings of Philando Castile, Freddie Gray and countless others were weighing on the minds of TRL's top guests.

More: Why this feminist is defending Joss Whedon

Vic Mensa's racial justice discussion was especially memorable. He spoke at length about the recent violence in Chicago, claiming that it was the natural result of disinvestment in the community. He also mentioned Laquan McDonald, a teenager shot 16 times by a police officer in 2014. Mensa explained how, in the aftermath of McDonald's shooting, his priority was voting a state attorney (who allegedly withheld video footage of the incident) out of office.

Vic Mensa

Common also believes in the power of the vote, especially during this volatile time. He admitted, "When I go out and vote, I'm thinking about who is going to bring us the most justice... not only on a federal level, but on a state and local level too." He feels strongly that the current climate of hatred can be changed through the power of the ballot.

More: 10 things you probably didn't know about Common

Both Mensa and Common make great points. Yes, grassroots movements are important, but nothing is going to ever get accomplished if people fail to get out and vote. I get that people aren't big on the presidential candidates this year, but as Whedon made clear, that just means there's an opportunity to come up with new and better options. Plus, as Common says, it's about more than just the presidential election.

I think what MTV has done with TRL's brief revival is great — and I hope we get to see more when the next election cycle arrives!

Gossip Girl star gives new baby a comic book name with a Celtic vibe

You might remember him as charming billionaire Colin Forrester in Gossip Girl, but actor Sam Page is taking on the biggest role of his life — fatherhood. He and his wife, Cassidy Boesch, recently welcomed their first child.

Page, 39, confirmed the news on Instagram Tuesday with an adorable snap of his newborn son, Logan, snuggling up to the family dog. The actor, who has also starred on Mad Men, Unbreakable Kimmy Schmidt and House of Cards, likes to keep his personal life private and doesn't post much to social media, but clearly this is one occasion he's happy to share with the world.

More: Tatyana Ali's baby name has a right royal connection

Logan is a Scottish baby name meaning "small hollow." After steadily slipping down the U.S. baby name chart from 1895, its fortune took an upturn in the 1970s, and it's been climbing ever since, proving to be a very popular choice for boys and ranking at No. 14 in 2015. Unsurprisingly Logan is even more popular in its native Scotland, currently placed at No. 7, and also ranks in the top 25 in England.

Pop culture Logans may have something to do with its current popularity. X-Men's mutant character Wolverine, known as Logan and played by Hugh Jackman in the movie adaptation, is the most famous fictional bearer of the name. There were also characters called Logan on Gilmore Girls and Veronica Mars.

Page and Boesch married in November 2014 in a villa just outside Santa Barbara, California. He posted a photo of their wedding day on Instagram with the caption, "Making it official."

Brad Pitt's statement makes it clear he's focusing on his family problems

0

Unfortunately there are a lot of damaging reports about Brad Pitt and Angelina Jolie in the media at the moment, and all signs point to a very bitter breakup. However, according to a new report, Pitt would really like his family situation to play out in private, and he's trying his best to ensure that it does.

More: Angelina Jolie was more prepared to divorce Brad Pitt than we all realized

According to E! News, Pitt has not seen his six children since Jolie filed for divorce last week — but it's not for lack of trying. An insider told the publication, "He really wants to see the kids and to work out an arrangement that is best for them. [He] wants to work things out privately and amicably."

Pitt also recently released a statement commenting on his family situation and revealing that he would be stepping out of the limelight — by not attending a screening for the documentary Voyage of Time, which he narrated.

More: Brad Pitt admits guilt to half of Angelina Jolie's abuse accusation

In a statement to E! News, Pitt said, "Terrence [Malick]'s Voyage of Time is an incredibly beautiful and unique experiential IMAX film for children and families chronicling the birth of time. I'm very grateful to be part of such a fascinating and educational project, but I'm currently focused on my family situation and don't want to distract attention away from this extraordinary film, which I encourage everyone to see."

It's clear that Pitt's focus is on his divorce from Jolie and the well-being of his kids, and we commend him for taking time to deal with his personal problems. Now we only hope that the media can do the same and allow the couple the privacy they so desire to deal with this difficult situation.

The DWTS judges let loose on the most-hated performance of last night

0

Just because we missed hearing from the Dancing with the Stars judges last night doesn't mean they didn't have some strong opinions to share.

More: We might as well give Laurie Hernandez the DWTS mirror ball trophy right now

Julianne Hough, Len Goodman, Carrie Ann Inaba and Bruno Tonioli had clearly been bursting at the seams to get their thoughts out about the face-off last night, and they had two full hours to get it out. And get it out they did.

Of course politician Rick Perry got the worst of the criticism. He's been on the bottom since the get-go, and the lack of improvement had the judges clearly frustrated.

More: DWTS literally has the craziest roster of contestants this season

The judges all agreed that Perry's dancing was stiff, though Hough really tried to pay him a compliment by saying she was happy he was dancing with his hips forward. She tried, right? Honestly, I'm glad Perry went home tonight, since I think he was the fair star to be sent packing. He has consistently pulled the weakest performances, so it was only right that he be the one to go. So in the end, the face-off got the results it should have.

If Terra Jole had been the one sent packing, I would have been upset. She's really grown in the past couple of episodes, and I think she could have a strong journey on Season 23 if given a chance.

Even though I thought the presidential debate was definitely worth having a shorter DWTS episode Monday night, I'll be glad for next week when the show is back to its regular format. Twelve back-to-back dances is too much. At least I remembered just how much I appreciate the judges' commentary along the way.

Our best tips for carving a pumpkin into a jack-o'-lantern that lasts

0
0

From gory to gorgeous, nothing sets the tone for your Halloween decor like a jack-o'-lantern. But whether you go with a classic grin or an intricate etching, these tips will help you make the most of your pumpkin.

1. Choose the right pumpkin by choosing the right stem

When choosing a pumpkin, there are a couple of basic things you want to look for — primarily a bruise-free specimen with a flat bottom that will keep it from rolling. But you probably already know that.

Here's the game-changing key to picking out the right pumpkin: Look at the stem.

Thin stem = thin walls: If you're making a traditional jack-o'-lantern, look for a pumpkin with a thin-to-medium stem. This means the walls of the pumpkin won't be as thick, making them easier to cut all the way through.

More: DIY pumpkin keg with harvest sangria is the best Halloween party idea ever

Thick stem = thick walls: If you want to carve an intricate design into your pumpkin that doesn't actually completely pierce the flesh, look for a pumpkin with a thick stem. This means the walls of the pumpkin are thicker, so you'll have more dimension to work with.

2. Resist the temptation to free-hand carve

It's always best to plan ahead. Sketch your design onto your pumpkin before you start carving, or use a stencil to help guide your hand. Improvising a design often results in a wacky-looking jack-o'-lantern that will have you running to the store for pumpkin No. 2.

3. Check the weather before you cut

If you live somewhere that's particularly damp or particularly warm through the fall, you won't want to carve your pumpkin until a couple of days before Halloween. Once you cut into your pumpkin, it becomes susceptible to bugs, mold and rot. I live in Southern California, and I've had jack-o'-lanterns completely collapse after just two days in the sun, so I keep my pumpkin indoors for decoration, then carve it the morning of Halloween so it looks fresh for trick-or-treaters.

Likewise, if you live in a colder climate with a danger of frost, bring your jack-o'-lantern inside at night so it doesn't freeze. Once it defrosts, it's going to go mushy.

4. Remove the guts through the back, not the top

So, you've got your design, and now you're ready to gut your pumpkin. So you start by cutting a hole through the top, right? Wrong!

Many people don't realize this, but keeping the stem attached to your pumpkin is one of the best ways to keep it fresh. The stem continues to send nutrients into the pumpkin and also helps it retain moisture.

Instead of slicing through the top, try cutting a hole in the back of your pumpkin and scooping out the innards from there. (You can usually fit that back in after.)

Also, make sure to not leave any strings, goo or seeds behind. They contain excess moisture that can make the pumpkin spoil more quickly.

5. Get creative with your tool choices

You can make a very basic jack-o'-lantern with a serrated knife, but for more intricate designs, pick up some specialty tools. An X-Acto knife, apple corer and many clay working tools are useful if you want to carve something more elaborate into your pumpkin.

More: Free Halloween pumpkin carving design templates

6. Stop the browning

Like a cut apple or potato, pumpkins can start to turn brown where they've been cut. Spray your pumpkin with acidulated water as you carve, then spread a thin layer of petroleum jelly on the cut sections of your design when you're finished carving. Just remember to use an LED light instead of a regular flame candle if you use this method.

7. Think beyond candles

Instead of a tealight candle, why not try something new? Add colored holiday lights, neon glow sticks or a blinking battery-powered light to your jack-o'-lantern's interior to give it a flashier appearance.

The Kardashians are reportedly terrified that Rob's life could be in danger

0

It really looked as though Rob Kardashian was turning his life around. He was becoming more active and losing weight, and he was much less reclusive after meeting Blac Chyna. But this may no longer be the case, as a new report paints a very scary picture of Kardashian's future.

More: Rob Kardashian took on way more than he could handle with Blac Chyna

According to a new report from TMZ, his family is terrified that Kardashian's life might be in danger because not only is he slipping back into his reclusive lifestyle, his health is also taking a dive as he continues to pack on the pounds. Sources told the site that Kardashian has gained back the 50 pounds he lost when he first started dating Chyna (which makes his current weight around 300 pounds) and his weight gain has reportedly created fears that his diabetes will "spin out of control" — you may remember that a few months ago Kardashian was hospitalized after a diabetes scare.

But that's not all. According to TMZ sources, Kardashian and Chyna's relationship is over. For the last two months, Kardashian has reportedly been living at his own home and has seldom left the confines of the building, not even for his new reality TV show, Rob & Chyna — although we're not sold on this report because Kardashian's Instagram account is filled with recent posts about his new show.

And just two weeks ago, Chyna took to Instagram to share a sweet photo from their date night.

More: Rob & Chyna have some serious #pregnancyproblems

But according to the site, Kardashian's biggest issue is reportedly his relationship with Chyna. It once proved to be so good for both his health and his confidence, but is now reportedly only deepening his problems because whenever they're together they fight.

"Rob is slipping back into a dark place," a source told TMZ, adding that his family is really worried about him and are praying that he "snaps out of it."

More: Y'all, Rob Kardashian is fine — just listen to what mama Kris Jenner had to say

If this report is true, it's really sad to think that Kardashian's life has once again taken a turn for the worse. While we completely understand that he'd be heartbroken if he and Chyna split up (which we really hope is not the case because we're rooting for them), he has a child on the way, and so many other wonderful reasons to get his life back on track. Let's hope that Kardashian realizes this before his weight causes irreparable damage.

Courteney Cox wants us to leave Jennifer Aniston out of Brangelina's drama

0

It's pretty ridiculous that after more than a decade of being divorced from Brad Pitt, Jennifer Aniston is being brought up in reports about Pitt and Angelina Jolie's split.

More: Brangelina's breaking up and the Team Aniston memes are seriously perfect

Yes, the circumstances surrounding Pitt's split from Aniston raised eyebrows — their five-year marriage ended in 2005, the same year that Pitt and Jolie filmed Mr. & Mrs. Smith — and a lot of people feel as though she's now rejoicing and saying, "I told you so" (at least, that's the way the countless memes that emerged on Twitter the day after Jolie announced her decision to file for divorce have made it seem).

But Aniston certainly does not need to be brought into her ex-husband's marital problems. She's moved on with her life, and she's happily married to Justin Theroux, so there's no reason for her to be even remotely interested in any of Pitt's life affairs — and this is something her good friend and former co-star Courteney Cox wants to remind everyone about.

"It's not about [Jennifer]," Cox told Entertainment Tonight at Revlon's Annual Philanthropic Luncheon in Los Angeles on Tuesday. "I feel like we're exacerbating it by even talking about it." She is, of course, right. And with that single comment, Cox has reminded us all why it's so wrong to bring Aniston into Brangelina's divorce drama.

More: We're calling BS on the lame Jennifer Aniston/Justin Theroux divorce rumors

However, Cox is not the only one who has been angered by Aniston being dragged into the drama, and while Aniston hasn't spoken about it herself, her husband has — there were even reports that Aniston and Theroux were divorcing. I mean, c'mon people!

Speaking to Business Insider, Theroux slammed the reports as nonsense, noting that there were much more important things to be discussing than Brangelina's divorce — especially when it involves his wife.

More: Jennifer Aniston and Justin Theroux's group honeymoon: Love it or hate it?

So, can we all just leave Jennifer Aniston out of Brangelina's drama once and for all now? We think she deserves that.

Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them: 8 secrets we know

0
0

But it's a little different. The fictional student manual, Fantastic Beasts and Where to Find Them (which Rowling actually penned into a real book for charity in 2001 as a Harry Potter collectible), is written by the fictional character Newton Scamander, a magizoologist. The movie follows the adventures of Newt and is set to be released Nov. 18, 2016. Here's what you need to know about it (if you don't already!).

1. It's not a prequel

Harry Potter Gringotts Dragon

Image: YouTube/Canal de TheMagicOfHogwarts

In 2014, Rowling said this new film is "neither a prequel nor a sequel to the Harry Potter series, but an extension of the wizarding world." So, the two stories are definitely related, as the charms, creatures and customs will all be familiar, but "Newt's story will start in New York, 70 years before Harry's gets underway," she continues. (Um, this means Albus Dumbledore would be about 30 — appearance, please!)

2. Magizoo-what?

Luna Lovegood Thestrals

Image: YouTube/Harry Potter

Magizoology is the study of magical creatures, of course. You may or may not remember that Luna Lovegood became a magizoologist. And here's the cool part: She ended up marrying Rolf Scamander. Does that name sound familiar? Rolf Scamander is Newt's grandson!

3. Eddie, meet Newt

Eddie Redmayne was announced to play Newt Scamander in the movie. As an Academy Award and Golden Globe winner, we can't wait to see what Redmayne brings to the silver screen and neither can Rowling:

4. Katherine, meet Eddie

Katherine Waterston Inherent Vice Screening

In 2015, Warner Bros. announced that Katherine Waterston (Boardwalk Empire, Inherent Vice) will star as Porpentina ("Tina") alongside Redmayne. Originally, she auditioned against Kate Upton and Elizabeth Debicki for the role of Tina's sister, Queenie — but instead, she was picked over Dakota Fanning, Saoirse Ronan, Lili Simmons and Alison Sudol for the role of Tina.

5. This will be a first for Rowling

JK Rowling Open Book Tour

Image: A Miller/WENN

We know J.K. Rowling can write. But this film will feature her debut as a screenwriter. After meeting with new Warner Bros. CEO Kevin Tsujihara, she explained, "And then I got out the rough draft that I'd thought was going to be an interesting bit of memorabilia for my kids and started rewriting!"

More: J.K. Rowling writes heartfelt letter about bullying to Harry Potter fan

6. America is on the map

Hogwarts and Hippogriff

Image: YouTube/RobertEaglefy

Where was America in the Triwizard Tournament? Well, Rowling may not have answered that question during her question-and-answer session on Twitter last week, but she did give us a few insights:

  • There will be a wizarding school in America.
  • It is not located in New York.
  • It has connections with a Native American culture.
  • Its name is of "immigrant origin."

But, hang on, don't go hunting for American auditions just yet. Even though the film takes place in America, it will be shooting on the old Harry Potter stomping grounds in Leavesden, Hertfordshire, in the U.K.

7. Get ready for "three megamovies"

Harry Potter Mermaids

Image: YouTube/parodypieshow

I think you could make a pretty good bet there will be sequels. The New York Times reported during an in-depth article on Tsujihara that there will be a trilogy of movies. And other sources reveal Tsujihara saying, "Jo [Rowling] has a vision for this extension of the franchise, and for the first time, she is writing the script for what she believes is at least a trilogy." And it was confirmed by Rowling herself that, yes, you should expect a trilogy:

Shannen Doherty is going through an incredibly difficult time in her life, but thankfully she isn't battling breast cancer on her own: Her husband of five years, Kurt Iswarienko, is right by her side.

On Monday, Doherty took to Instagram to pay tribute to Iswarienko and gush about the incredible love and unwavering support he has given her. She shared a photo from their wedding day, and she gave it a tear-jerking caption — seriously, we dare you to not cry while reading it.

Doherty began by saying she had accepted the "Love Your Spouse Challenge" from her good friend Sarah Michelle Gellar, and she was particularly thankful for the challenge, because when looking through old photos, she came across one from their wedding day. "Our wedding was exceptional and not for the big event it was. It was exceptional because we committed for better or worse, in sickness or in health to love and cherish one another," she wrote. "Those vows have never meant more than they do now. Kurt has stood by my side thru sickness and makes me feel more loved now than ever. I would walk any path with this man. Take any bullet for him and slay every dragon to protect him. He is my soul mate. My other half. I am blessed."

Thank you for your message! I’m away from my email right now. We are taking our son to the doctor to see if maybe he has something that can be magically cured with an antibiotic or something.

Best,

3. Tuesday morning

Hi there,

I am away from my email while my husband and I fight in front of our kids about who “gets” to work and who will take care of the children. We will also touch upon why I am unable to stop making him feel guilty and why he is unable to read my mind about what house-related tasks I need him to do and when.

4. Tuesday afternoon

Hey.

I’m away from my email right now and can’t respond in a timely manner. My kid is still home sick with me. He’s not sick-sick the way he was yesterday, but just sick enough to have to stay home from day care. Here’s hoping he takes a five-hour nap.

5. Wednesday through Friday

Sorry, but I am never going to respond to your email. Our other kid is now sick.

See you in hell,

C
