Sorry, Beckett fans, but Sister Cities was way better than Castle

$
0
0

Castle fans were furious when Stana Katic was unceremoniously dumped from the show right before it was canceled, but tonight she bounced back to the screen in an exquisite performance in Lifetime's Sister Cities.

Let's get the spoiler alert out of the way right now: This article contains major spoilers for Sister Cities, so if you haven't had a chance to see it yet, you may want to move along.

More: If Nathan Fillion wanted to ruin Stana Katic's career, he'll have to try again

Lifetime's latest flick is based on the highly acclaimed play of the same name by Colette Freedman, and it focuses on four sisters dealing with the death of their mother. Katic plays eldest sister Carolina, who has always been forced into the role of the responsible one while their free-spirited mother flirts her way from man to man.

Their mother's death brings the estranged sisters back together again, but only one knows what really happened: She was in the end stages of ALS and had convinced third sister, Austin, to help her commit suicide. Slowly, the others begin to piece together what happened, and Carolina is appalled — that is, until Austin gives her a taste of the disease her mother was living with.

While Sister Cities was filmed before Katic was fired from Castle, it proves that the outrage of her fans in the wake of that news was justified. Katic delivered a beautifully nuanced performance, and her character's arc was one of the most interesting parts of the film.

More: Maybe Castle's finale would've been better if Beckett had died

And by the looks of Twitter tonight, we're not the only ones who think so.

I thought good moms make their kids' lunches every day, but I was wrong

The first time I didn’t pack my sons’ lunches, it was a mistake. I’d had a terrible night’s rest, and sometime around 6 a.m., right after waking my kids for school, I drifted into a desperately needed deep sleep. By the time the boys, both in high school at the time, were ready to leave, I was still knee-deep in a dream.

When I actually did wake up, an hour later and to an empty house, I felt terrible. No one had ever packed my lunch past kindergarten, and I had vowed to be a better parent when my older one started school. By virtue of a brown paper bag, my sons would know what true motherly love really was. Failure to pack their sandwiches and fruit felt more like an affront to their entire childhoods. How much could I truly love my kids if I was willing to let them starve?

More: I want my kid as far away from her BFF as possible

Lots, it turns out.

The troubling thought occurred to me just minutes into my mental flagellation. Maybe my sons, who had lived a privileged life of homemade dinners and next-day leftovers, were old enough to start packing their lunches (gasp) by themselves?

I turned the idea over and over in my head, expecting the voice of common sense or at least maternal decency to obliterate the thought in its tracks. Nope. It just stayed and got all warm and comfortable. Before I knew it, I had my hand on my hip while I questioned every other parenting choice I made.

Why did I still wake them up for school?

Why was I still sacrificing the television in the evenings so they could play video games?

Why was I cooking meals I was sure they would eat and sacrificing my own favorites, like fish or stuff with stinky cheese?

That shit needed to quit.

When the boys came back from school that afternoon, they weren’t even hungry. My older one, then 17, told me that he easily mooched fries and half a sandwich from his gang of friends who, as it turned out, didn’t have their mommies packing their lunches. I announced the day had come when I was retiring my midday meal apron and placing the responsibility on my sons’ shoulders.

“You’re old enough to make your own lunches. I’ll always make sure there’s food in the fridge, so if you don’t want to pack something, it’s on you to come up with the money to buy.”

I steeled myself, waiting for the inevitable hurt that would flicker in their little baby brown eyes. Nothing.

“OK, cool,” my younger one said. “Can I go play drums?”

More: The 16 most brilliant things moms have ever done to get their kids to behave

My older one didn’t even bother to respond. He was watching a funny video while pretending he was listening to me.

Sure enough, the next day, neither kid packed his lunch. So, you know, I reminded them. Eventually they got in the groove of not packing their lunch (ever), and I learned the subtle, melodic rhythm of not giving a shit anymore, because why should I if they didn’t?

My kids were healthy, had access to more lunch meat than any normal person could want and were unwilling to step up and throw some of it between bread for themselves (I'm ignoring the time my son took a sandwich baggie full of Lucky Charms for "lunch"). I finally realized that being an awesome parent had zero to do with indentured-lunch-packing servitude. Maybe my parents knew a few things after all.

It’s now been a solid year, and I have packed just one lunch, because it was my younger child’s first day this year, and I kind of missed sending him off with the promise of nourishment in his backpack. He didn’t even eat it.

More: Babysitters deserve more than minimum wage — even for 'just watching TV'

FYI: I still wake them up every morning, try to cook only what they like to eat and scamper to my bedroom whenever I want to watch TV. Some things are harder than others to give up as a mom. Apparently school lunch wasn’t one of them.

Yuca frita is the crispy-creamy french fry alternative you've got to try

$

French fries are obviously the best salty, golden, fried potato snack out there. But what if I told you to ditch the potato?

Panic would set in at first, of course, but never fear: Yuca fries are the crispy-creamy fried snack that just might be better than the old potato.

I had yuca fries for the first time at a Cuban restaurant in Los Angeles. I was immediately obsessed. Crispy and golden on the outside, dense yet fluffy on the inside, it was impossible to stop snacking on them (especially since they were so good at soaking up all of the garlicky mojo sauce they were served with).

More: 16 traditional Latin comfort foods that you need to make this fall

Enjoyed throughout Central and South America, parts of Africa, South Asia and the Caribbean, yuca is the tuberous root of the cassava plant, which is also used to make tapioca. Yuca is similar in shape to a sweet potato, but with a rough, brown, waxy skin that looks more like a tree root than a regular potato.

Yuca is more calorically dense than a potato, but it also has more fiber and protein and less sugar. It has a higher carbohydrate content, but when you're frying yuca, this works to its advantage: Unlike french fries, yuca needs to be fried only once to get the perfect crispy, golden exterior.

More: 21 Peruvian specialties you need to try ASAP

To prepare yuca fries, you need to peel them. Cut them into wedges or planks, removing the woody inner core of the yuca. Yuca can turn brown when exposed to the air, so as you cut, add the fresh slices directly to a pot of cold water.

Once you're done slicing, bring the pot of water with the yuca to a boil, then lower the heat, and simmer until the yuca is tender and fraying (but not mushy).

Strain the yuca, and dry it on a layer of paper towels.

In the meantime, bring a pot of oil to 350 degrees F. Once it's reached the correct temperature, add the yuca (in batches if needed — don't crowd the pan, or they won't be as crispy). Fry until crispy and golden on the outside, flipping and turning the fries frequently so they cook evenly.

Remove the yuca fries from the oil, season with salt, and drain on paper towels. Serve with ketchup, spicy mayo, a garlicky mojo sauce — basically anything with a kick.

You can see the recipe for making yuca fries along with a Peruvian aji amarillo sauce at Serious Eats.

You can also try making crispy baked yuca fries with this recipe from The Healthy Maven.

So if you're ready to take a break from your beloved potato, why not try yuca? You may be able to find it at a typical grocery store, but try checking out Central or South American markets in your area too. Once you take the first crispy, carby bite, you won't regret trying something new.

People have been putting their cats in dresses since 3100 B.C.

It's pretty much impossible to get online these days without seeing a cat dressed in a costume. To be completely honest, scanning the internet for dressed-up kitties is one of my favorite procrastination activities.

Most people probably think we have the internet to thank for such unique pastimes, but this super-fun tradition actually started way before the invention of the intrawebs. In fact, we have the ancient Egyptians and their bejeweled felines to thank for cat worship in all forms — and it only got better (and funnier) from there.

Miley Cyrus' Tonight Show performance just fueled a major comeback

I think it's safe to say that 2016 is Miley Cyrus' year. She got a new job as a coach on The Voice, her wedding plans with longtime love Liam Hemsworth are back on, and she and Hemsworth are even rumored to be writing an original play together.

To add the cherry on top of an already great '16, Cyrus just gave a knockout performance of Bob Dylan's "Baby, I'm in the Mood for You" with The Roots on The Tonight Show with Jimmy Fallon, and it opened her up to a whole new, more mature fan base.

Cyrus got up on that stage and proved that she is a consummate entertainer. She worked the crowd perfectly, and her smooth voice was intoxicating. Her singing was so perfect, in fact, that former haters saw the light and hit social media to praise her performance.

Can you say "goosebumps"? Cyrus and The Roots are an amazing combination. I'd totally buy a ticket if they decided to tour together.

Of course, Cyrus' die-hard fans were hanging around to point out that she's been this talented all along — not to mention the fact that she's always had a big heart.

Miley comment 2

Miley comment 2

It's not hard to understand the shock of some of these Tonight Show fans. After all, Cyrus has become more famous for her crazy Instagram posts and outrageous stage performances filled with oversized penis replicas and human-sized leaves of marijuana than for her musical ability.

It's about time the world took notice of Cyrus' amazing talent as a performer. I'd love for her to be known as the woman with the booming voice and not the girl who twerked onstage at the VMAs while simultaneously humping a foam finger and Robin Thicke. That's not to say I don't celebrate Cyrus' courage to celebrate her own individuality. I'm just glad her singing is again taking center stage.

Her shining moment on The Tonight Show this weekend just fueled the huge winning streak she was already on.

What the hell happened with Matt LeBlanc on the 2016 Emmys red carpet?

It's no secret that red carpet interviews can be a disaster, which is exactly what happened at the 2016 Emmys with Matt LeBlanc.

More: We still don't know why Melissa McCarthy cried on the 2014 Emmys red carpet

While chatting with E! during their red carpet show, LeBlanc definitely got noticed for not only wearing sunglasses (because it's so bright in front of the cameras?) but looking like he was so super excited to be there. Yes, that was sarcasm. Maybe he just wasn't feeling the interview or was just being shy, but he really didn't seem interested at all.

Things became even more uncomfortable when the former Friends star was chatting with Game of Thrones star Emilia Clarke (remember when she freaked out about meeting him?). Not only could he not hear her talking — LeBlanc was talking with Jason Kennedy while Clarke was at a different location talking with Giuliana Rancic — but then he brought up Clarke being naked on GoT.

Matt LeBlanc, Emmys

Yeah, he said that, because the only reason to watch the HBO hit series is to see her naked. I mean, it's not like she's a talented actress who's doing some amazing storytelling with her character or anything. He seemed to be joking, but still, it made for one awkward, creepy moment.

LeBlanc is also catching the eyes of people on Twitter, and not in a good way. Here's what a handful had to say about his interview with E!

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)

Good things come to you through the people you meet while Jupiter is in Libra. Your fortunes will increase with every new face and fresh perspective you embrace. This sounds good but may prove problematic as the reality of your situation sets in. First of all, you're going to have to learn to be grateful — never a strong point with children of Mars — and you'll need to work with people while muzzling some of your opinions, actions and ambitions in order to serve the greater good. It's a tall order, but you can do it. Jupiter will be in Libra for a year.

Your ruling planet Venus enters Scorpio on Sept. 23 for a 3-1/2-week stay. Usually, this isn't a great time because Venus doesn't do very well in this part of the sky. She often becomes stinging, spiteful and jealous. If you don't recognize these traits showing up in your own behavior, you'll certainly spot them in the people around you. Thankfully, the planet won't be as intense as it has been in autumns past. In fact, you may see a more benevolent side come out in early October when a sworn rival surprises you by ending hostilities and offering you an olive branch.

GEMINI (May 20 - June 19)

This is the best week of the year. The sun/Jupiter conjunction on Sept. 25 will shower you with an embarrassment of riches. It will be so much that you really won't know what to do with yourself. You could be deluged with golden opportunities, financial rewards and even the reversal of a ruling that was made against you. So can you trust this upturn in fortunes? Yes, because over the next few weeks, Jupiter's sextile to Saturn will only increase this experience of plenty. But you have to remember the cardinal rule of Jupiter: "pay it forward." Scrimp and Jupiter will pull the plug.

Looking to move? Maybe you're in the process of buying or selling a piece of property. Then again, you could have found a house to flip. The sun/Jupiter conjunction in that part of your solar chart that pertains to rooms, homes and co-ops on Sept. 25 points to real-estate signs in your near future. However, you don't want to spend too much time going back and forth on the idea. Jupiter is not a planet known for vacillating or mulling over options. Wait too long and that window of opportunity will close — and along with it goes that buyer, loan or insider's price.

You have to make a decision this week that won't make you happy. It's the right decision to make, but upsetting people upsets you, which is why you're dragging your feet. Right now, it's your job to lay down the law or to act in accordance with one. This is a good time to invoke the Libra mantra: You're not the one who wrote the law, but you are the one who has to uphold it. It may seem disingenuous and even cowardly, but when you see the end result and all the good it will bring, then you'll be glad you acted when you did.

That's what comes of having had Jupiter, the planet of good fortune and higher purpose, traveling through your own zodiac sign. Are you better off now than you were before? If the answer's "yes," then keep on doing what you're doing because you are clearly on the right path. If the answer is no, then it's not too late to backtrack and discover where you took a wrong turn. There will always be time and opportunity to rebuild bridges or to make up for a past wrong.

That said, you might reconsider your approach to a certain matter when Mercury comes out of retrograde on Sept. 21. We were kinda skeptical when Universal Pictures announced they would use CGI technology (along with the stand-in help of Paul Walker's brothers Cody Walker and Caleb Walker) to replace Paul in Furious 7, but now there may be plans to keep Brian O'Conner alive for future sequels — and it seems like a really bad idea.

Vin Diesel apparently hopes to have Brian pop up in cameos in yet-to-be-made Fast & Furious movies, and he has even gone as far as consulting with Cody and Caleb about the possibility.

"I had a phone call with Vin for about an hour and we really discussed this a while back. He wanted [our] blessing," Caleb said in an interview with Entertainment Tonight, adding that Diesel asked when it "would be acceptable to maybe bring Paul’s character back... to really kind of let his fans know he’s still out there."

Um, we'd say never. Sorry, Diesel, but it will never be acceptable to bring Paul's character back.

More: Scott Eastwood's Fast 8 news makes me miss Paul Walker all over again

While we aren't really sure how Diesel would bring Brian back yet, let's be real here: it seems pretty disrespectful. Walker brought the character to life, and now he's gone. It's a heartbreaking reality to come to terms with, but to keep CGIing him into movies seems chintzy — and like a cheap money grab for a desperate franchise.

Many fans believe Paul and his character got a proper send-off in Furious 7 and would actually rather see the series come to an end than have Paul's performance and legacy sullied with strange CGI work for an awkward cameo.

Paul Walker comments 1

Paul Walker comments 1

And while it seems like a horribly disrespectful idea to try to recreate Brian O'Conner, his brothers say that stepping in to replace Paul in the filming of Furious 7 — which was in the middle of production when Paul tragically died — helped them find closure.

More: Paul Walker's daughter wins much-deserved lawsuit but it doesn't fix anything

"We got to understand more about Paul and what he was all about," Caleb said of being on the Furious 7 set. "We had to share Paul with a lot of people, in a weird way. He was gone a lot, he was filming, so we missed him. Sometimes at the holidays he wasn't always there, you know? He tried. We'd see him on set, we visited a few times, but to kind of get that closure and understanding [of] Paul was really special."

Having Caleb and Cody play Brian for Furious 7 was a sweet, fitting way to end both Paul's and Brian's stories. Why open up old wounds and disrespect Paul by replacing him to keep the character (and the franchise) alive?

1. Boot cut

They're called boot cut for a reason. You can rock your favorite pair of ankle boots with them, though for a night on the town, heeled booties are the way to go. But don't let this style fool you — a great pair of boot-cut jeans will also work well with a nice pair of pumps for a look that's more dressed up. Try the Modern Boot Cut jeans from Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.™ for jeans that will feel comfortable and keep their shape all day long thanks to their super-stretchy denim.

2. Skinny

Trying to name all the shoes that would pair perfectly with your favorite skinny jeans would leave my head, and yours, spinning. Suffice it to say that skinny jeans are versatile. And this may come as a surprise, but they can be comfy too. The Modern Skinny jean from Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.™ maintains its shape all day and keeps you comfy with super-soft, super-stretchy denim. Straight jeans actually go really well with a good heel. Rock them with a stiletto ankle bootie for a night on the town. On the days you're feeling a little more low-key, try pairing the Curvy Straight jean from Signature by Levi Strauss & Co.™ with low ankle boots or even combat boots.

If you're a huge fan of TV, then that's the most obvious reason to tune in to the Emmys. However, even though the award show seems to pretty much be the same thing ever year, there is always that one cast that shows up and makes it exciting. This year, that was Stranger Things.

We can't watch Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Emmys acceptance speech without ugly-crying

It's so exciting to see both Seinfeld alums Julia Louis-Dreyfus and Jerry Seinfeld at the 2016 Emmys, and we're thrilled she just won her seventh Emmy. So why is Louis-Dreyfus in tears?

Veep
Image: HBO

Julia Louis-Dreyfus just won another Emmy for playing Selina Meyer in the HBO show Veep, bringing her statue count to five in total for Veep alone. But, sadly, the night was bittersweet.

More: And the best quotes from the Emmys are...

At the end of her acceptance speech, with hands visibly shaking, she dedicated her Emmy to her father before revealing that he passed away on September 16.

Through tears, Louis-Dreyfus said, "I'd like to dedicate this to my father, William Louis-Dreyfus, who passed away on Friday. I'm so glad he liked me because his opinion was the one that really mattered."

The camera cut to Jerry Seinfeld in the audience, clapping with an empathetic look on his face.

More: We still don't know why Melissa McCarthy cried on the 2014 Emmys red carpet

William Louis-Dreyfus was born in France but moved to the United States in 1940, where he later became a prominent businessman with a net-worth of $3.4 billion, according to Forbes in 2006. In addition to being the chairman of his own company, he collected art and began donating it to the charity The Harlem Children's Zone in recent years. The cause of his death has not yet been made public.

More: Remember when Julia Louis-Dreyfus & Bryan Cranston made out at the Emmys?

But Julia wasn't all waterworks in her speech. She cracked a joke implying she felt responsible for Donald Trump's presidential candidacy, saying, "I'd like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate. I think that Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire but now feels more like a sobering documentary. So I certainly do promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it."

May William Louis-Dreyfus rest in peace.

Leslie Jones talks about being naked on CNN: 'I just wanted to be beautiful, y'all!'

As Leslie Jones likes to say, she just slayed all day at the 2016 Emmys by standing on the stage and creating a bit revolving around that time she faced terrible hate on Twitter and her website was hacked.

More: What the hell happened with Matt LeBlanc on the 2016 Emmys red carpet?

Remember when the Saturday Night Live comedian basically had the worst summer ever thanks to those who thought it was a good idea to bully her online and then when others decided to hack her website, unveil private information and release nude photos of her? It was absolutely terrible and I can't even imagine what she felt at the time, but to watch it go down as a fan of hers? It made me angry, as I know it did her other fans.

For someone who brings nothing but joy into the lives of people, the Ghostbusters star does not deserve to be targeted with so much disrespect. But if anyone can turn around something so negative into something hilariously positive, it's Leslie freaking Jones.

Jones getting up on that Emmy stage, telling those men who protect the cards with the winners' names in a briefcase that their job is unimportant and what they need to do is protect her Twitter account and her website will go down in award show history.

You can watch the moment play out here, and trust me, you're going to want to watch it on repeat to hear her declare, "I just wanted to feel beautiful, y'all!" Guess what, Leslie? You are beautiful inside and out.

The fact that she can turn what had to be such a heartbreaking time for her into something where she can poke fun at it all just goes to show you how wonderful Jones is.

It also goes to show you that if you're a Leslie Jones hater, you will never, ever be able to bring her down. You know what she'll do? Mock you, laugh at you and prove to everyone all over again why she deserves to be doing what she's doing and what beauty she brings to the world.

I can't believe Manzo'd with Children's Lauren Manzo is so into being a mom

More often than not, reality TV families only show viewers the glamorous, exciting and mostly staged moments of their lives. Yes, it's fun to see reality stars all dolled up and engaging in the pettiest arguments possible, but on occasion, it's more fun to witness their seemingly mundane conversations.

More: Thank goodness Caroline Manzo is OK after discovering that lump in her breast

The best, of course, is when reality stars have relatable moments in which they make important decisions about their future. Imagine that! That's exactly what we saw on tonight's Manzo'd with Children, as Lauren Manzo and her husband Vito Scalia discussed one of the biggest decisions they'll ever make: When will they welcome a tiny Scalia into their new family? This scene was the most unexpected of the current season, but I appreciated it nonetheless.

Lauren and Vito
Image: Bravo

Last season, things got awkward when Caroline Manzo repeatedly pressured her newly married daughter into pumping out a grandchild. Lauren was visibly annoyed by the constant meddling from her mom, but she evidently has since been worn down — or changed her mind all on her own. Either way, she's ready to make her mother a grandmother.

More: The Manzo'd with Children kids aren't just trust fund brats, people

The Manzo clan may get some hate from viewers who feel as though they don't really do anything, but I personally enjoy this style of television. There's no need for the Scalias to participate in contrived "reality" TV scenes every week. Plenty of other shows have the outlandish arguments covered. Manzo'd with Children has found its niche as one of the few reality TV shows in which viewers can actually relate to the cast members and how they handle the stresses of everyday life. No, it might not be dramatic, chaotic or glamorous, but it is real — and how often can you say that about reality TV?

Lauren and Vito
Image: Bravo

Despite having misgivings in the past, Lauren has decided that being Mama Scalia is top priority. Her efforts, as documented Manzo'd with Children, have obviously paid off, since she announced her pregnancy shortly after the new season began. This is all very sudden and unexpected for fans but clearly planned by the Scalias. I think Lauren and Vito will be amazing parents, and I look forward to seeing their journey on Manzo'd with Children.

Anyone have a fire extinguisher? Donald Trump is getting burned at the Emmys

Judging by the comments made at the Emmys this year, Donald Trump's losing in Hollywood — big time.

Despite creating a hit reality show, The Apprentice, Trump is probably the least liked man in Tinseltown right now. His run for the presidency has the nation divided, but nearly all the presenters and winners at the Emmys stood united by creating a Trumpster fire. Here's what they said.

More: And the best quotes from the Emmys are...

The Jimmy Kimmel Live! host started off the night with a two-for-one burn.

"Television can also tear us apart. If it wasn't for television, would Donald Trump be running for president? No, he would be home right now quietly rubbing up against his wife Malaria while she pretended to be asleep," Kimmel said.

The second part of the scorcher came when he set his sights on Mark Burnett, who produced Trump’s reality show, The Apprentice, and was in the audience.

"He's sitting right there. Thanks to Mark Burnett, we don't have to watch reality shows anymore because we're living in one."

More: We still don't know why Melissa McCarthy cried on the 2014 Emmys red carpet

But reality TV king Burnett added his own sizzle by saying, "Hillary Clinton called me in the last few minutes so that I'll personally thank Jimmy Kimmel for an extra free five minutes of ABC network publicity for Donald Trump."

Burnett kept the joke going by saying, "Tomorrow night, we are back with Miley Cyrus and Alicia Keyes, your next Supreme Court Justices."

Julia Louis-Dreyfus was all apologies, implying she might be partially responsible for Trump's bid for the White House, given that her show blurs the line between politics and humor.

"I'd also like to take this opportunity to personally apologize for the current political climate. I think that Veep has torn down the wall between comedy and politics. Our show started out as a political satire but it now feels like a sobering documentary. So I certainly do promise to rebuild that wall and make Mexico pay for it."

More: We can't watch Julia Louis-Dreyfus' Emmy acceptance speech without ugly-crying

Actresses Mandy Moore and America Ferrera teamed up as presenters and had their own fiery take on Trump's transition from TV to politics.

Moore said, "Whether physical competition or a talent show, a reality series can lead to fortune and fame."

Ferrera then added, "And maybe even the White House. And that's not a joke, that's just what's happening. So, Tim Gunn 2020?"

Master of None actor and Emmy winner Aziz Ansari had a few blazing jokes of his own, saying, "It's an election year and I want everyone to know that after careful consideration, I've decided I'm going with Trump, which is why I'm also recommending we get rid of all Muslim and Hispanic nominees from the ceremony immediately. Wow, this would be so much easier if we were at the Oscars. Mom, Dad, I know I just thanked you but you need to be escorted out right now, I'm so sorry. America Ferrara, nice try changing your name to America, but you're not fooling anyone. You're out. And you know what, let's get Tambor out of here and open up that best comedy category!"

The Apprentice was nominated for four Emmys over the years but never earned the gold statue, which may be the biggest burn of all.

8 life hacks guaranteed to make having a cat as easy as you thought it would be

$

0

Cats are peculiar creatures, to say the least.

As cat owners, we don't always see eye to eye with our felines. What we call furniture, our cats call scratching posts. What we consider a "no spill" water bowl, our cats consider a personal challenge.

It doesn't have to be this way. These eight life hacks will revolutionize your relationship with the special feline in your life and leave you both purring in contentment.

1. Banish cat hair forever

Cat hair has magical properties. It finds a way to stick to everything, clinging to furniture, clothing and the rims of our coffee mugs. Rubber gloves strip hair from furniture and clothing and are more economical than buying lint rollers in bulk, eliminating the stress of clean-up.

2. Create a climbing space

Cats love vertical space, so help your cat get climbing by installing lots of floating shelves he can scale. Start with a couple low ones, and then install others that gradually get higher. Your cat will be in heaven when he has his own personal climbing wall.

More: This cheat sheet makes it easy to understand your crazy cat

3. Make a tent

Give your cat a hiding space he'll love without spending a dime. Use an old T-shirt to create a DIY tent using this tutorial, and he'll have his own spot to snooze.

4. Keep cords covered

Some cats inexplicably enjoy chewing on power cords. Protect your cats from electric shock and your home from fires by covering your cords with protective tubing.

5. Free the birds

Is your birdhouse more of a kitty buffet than an avian sanctuary? Secure chicken wire around your birdhouses and feeders to keep outdoor cats away from the birds in your garden.

More: Science proves your cats may actually own you

6. Make potted plants off-limits

Cats love pawing around your indoor potted plants, leaving dirty paw prints everywhere. Try placing pinecones around the base of your plants to deter your felines from playing in the soil.

7. Put an end to picky eaters

If you've tried every brand of cat food to find a food your picky eater will eat, you might be surprised to find out it may be the bowl, not the food, that's causing a problem. Some cats prefer wide dishes, according to experts, because they don't like having their whiskers confined while they eat. Cats rely on their whiskers to sense their surroundings. Food bowls that limit whisker mobility are irritating and make them uncomfortable, so try a dish instead of a bowl.

More: 9 foods you should never feed your cat

8. Keep litter in its place

Cats track litter throughout the house on their paws. This is more than a little gross, but there is an easy solution. Place a plush bath mat outside the litter box to catch litter from their paws. This cuts down on litter tracking, and all you have to do is periodically shake out the mat and wash it.

Life with cats can be stressful. Take a deep breath, and try some of these life hacks designed for the crazy cat lady in all of us today.

We may only be in the second season of Fear the Walking Dead, but it's been a long, hard road for fans. We've had downs... we've had, uh, downs. OK, fine, we've had a few ups, but they've been far and few between. So, when it has been such a struggle to invest ourselves in the original characters, why in fresh hell does Fear keep introducing new ones?

More: Raise your hand if you wish that zombie on Fear the Walking Dead was Madison

As a huge fan of The Walking Dead, I hate that I wind up giving Fear such a hard time almost every single week. Plus, I'm a Southerner, y'all... it's deeply ingrained in us from an early age that if you don't have anything nice to say, you just don't say anything at all.

Alas, since I've always erred more on the side of the honesty-is-the-best-policy mantra, I feel it would be a disservice to the producers of Fear not to call attention to the fact that fans are not happy.

We have tried. Right, you guys? We wanted to like the Clark-Manawa clan. We wanted to love the series just as we've loved The Walking Dead. However, we just haven't managed to find that magical chemistry we have with Rick Grimes and the gang.

And every time it seems like we're taking a step forward in the right direction — last week's kiss between Nick and Luciana piqued our interest — the next episode comes along and catapults us three steps back.

More: Dayum, Nick, that was the hottest kiss in Fear the Walking Dead history

Take this week's episode, for instance. It's not that nothing noteworthy happened in "Pillar of Salt." The whole (spoiler alert! spoiler alert!) Strand getting stabbed in the stomach thing was a suspenseful moment. Well, for like a minute at least, until it was evident he was going to be A-OK.

In Madison's new role as one of the leaders at the hotel she, Strand and Alicia are holed up in, along with several other survivors, the matriarch nearly crossed paths with Nick. That was almost exciting too.

But here's the big problem with this episode, and with Fear at large, is it's too gosh-damn splintered. There are so many sub-stories and tertiary characters that I have trouble keeping up. I had barely nailed down the names of everyone in the Clark-Manawa family when they starting dog-piling the audience with new faces and names each week.

Not only do we have multiple arcs to follow in our original group — that of Nick, Ofelia, Travis and, lastly, the newly reunited Madison, Strand and Alicia — but we have also now been tasked with trying to figure out what's going on with the people of the farm community in Tijuana.

And with the survivors staying at the hotel with Madison, Strand and Alicia. And with Chris and his bad-news buddies. And... and... seriously, there are so many that I have lost track. If I'm really being honest, I still sometimes have to refer to IMDB's cast notes to remember who is who in this series.

More: Nick's cute and all, but I fell asleep during FTWD's midseason premiere

By the second season of The Walking Dead, I was here for it. I knew every character's name, as well as the actors portraying those characters. Even when The Walking Dead brought in new characters, they integrated them in a way that made it easy to form that familial connection an audience needs to feel with a character if we're going to go all in for them.

I'm just not there with the Clark-Manawa family. And since the series didn't give me the breathing room I needed to form attachments to them before they paraded a ton of new (equally non-memorable) characters out, I may never be.

What do you think? Do you like the new characters, or think Fear should cool it?

Asian-American actress Constance Wu from the show Fresh Off the Boat presented at tonight's Emmy Awards, but folks on Twitter are demanding to know why the comedienne wasn't nominated.

The ABC sitcom Fresh Off the Boat is about the life of young Eddie Huang and his Asian-American family's life in Florida in the 1990s. Randall Park plays Eddie's dad, Louis, and Constance Wu plays Eddie's mom, Jessica. Both Park and Wu took to the stage tonight to share the winners of the Emmy for Guest Actor and Actress in a Comedy Series. But before they read the names off the teleprompter, they addressed the elephant in the room — that their show wasn't nominated.

Wu said, "This year, for the first time, the Creative Arts Emmys were held over two nights."

Wu chirped back, "Let it go, Randall."

Well, Twitter is not letting it go.

Both Wu and Park are extremely talented comic actors and should certainly have been nominated, but if Orphan Black is any indicator, it can take a show several seasons before it gets recognized by the big awards outlets. And between major stalwarts Modern Family and Veep, there just isn't a lot of room. Given that Aziz Ansari's show Master of None won an Emmy tonight, we think more Asian-Americans will be represented on TV in the future.

It's Scott Disick for the win tonight on Rob & Chyna

Forget Blac Chyna, Rob Kardashian and their plethora of drama. Tonight's Rob & Chyna showed off Scott Disick's level-headedness and, I admit it, it was kinda impressive.

More: You can thank Kendall Jenner for getting Rob Kardashian back on Instagram

I know these past couple years have been hard for Disick, not that he didn't bring it on himself, but it looks like he might have actually come out better for it.

During tonight's episode of the new reality show, Kendall Jenner called mom Kris Jenner mid-panic attack, but it was Disick who put things into perspective for her.

"Once upon a time, a couple years ago, I lost my whole entire family. Then I had a really big drug problem. Then I was in rehab. Then I got out. Then I was still into doing drugs and doing shit. Rob hasn't come out of the house in three or four years, then he knocked up his girlfriend after two weeks of knowing her, and then there were some other problems that went on in-between then. So if you think you got it rough, just take a look at us," Disick's "fairytale" went.

And suddenly, Kendall's problems just didn't seem so bad.

More: Rob & Chyna have some serious #pregnancyproblems

Disick's story over the past couple of years definitely isn't pretty, but he's owning it, and trying to help Rob through his current struggles. That's very big of him. It takes a lot not to let the defeats Disick has experienced bring him down for good.

Now Rob just needs to find that in his life because right now, it's hard to watch. He is so insecure about his weight. He's terrified that Chyna won't find him attractive and, as a viewer, that's truly sad.

"I just didn't want you to see me and give you more reason to stop being attracted to me or whatever," Rob told Chyna when she asked why he didn't attend a party with her.

More: The reality TV curse may have already struck Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna

It definitely doesn't help that these two fight like they hate each other. Your significant other is supposed to be the person you turn to in order to feel good about yourself. He or she is the person that is supposed to lift you up when you're feeling down. If Rob and Chyna are going to make their relationship work, they absolutely need to find that in one another. As supportive as Disick is, he just isn't going to cut it for Rob in those moments.

Do you think Disick might be the surprising person who helps Rob come back out on top of life?

Sarah Paulson announced her love for Holland Taylor to the world tonight at the Emmys, and if you didn't get major feels from the moment, you have no soul.

Paulson was on the 2016 Emmys red carpet chatting with E!'s Giuliana Rancic about the night, but before wrapping up the interview, Paulson looked straight into the camera and said, "If you're watching, Holland Taylor, I love you."

And you know Taylor was watching her girlfriend own that red carpet.

What makes this love so beautiful, in my opinion, is the fact that despite the age gap — Taylor is Paulson's senior by 32 years — and despite the criticism these two may face being in a same-sex relationship, they are publicly celebrating their love at every chance. They seemingly aren't letting anyone or anything get in the way of the fact that they have a beautiful, healthy, loving relationship.

It's also so encouraging to see that the world is changing for the better. Despite the fact that the media (yes, I am sometimes to blame too) likes to focus on the hardships of our country, change is happening. Good change. Paulson and Taylor are proof. The world is becoming more accepting of love in every shape, size and color. It's a beautiful thing! It should be celebrated, and that's just what Paulson and Taylor are clearly doing. And, in celebrating their love, they're sharing that happiness with the rest of the world.

More: Test your American Horror Story knowledge with our killer quiz

No word why Taylor wasn't with Paulson at the award show, but in her place Paulson brought along the real-life Marcia Clark, who Paulson portrayed in the heavily nominated show, American Crime Story: The People v. O.J. Simpson. Paulson herself won Outstanding Lead Actress in a Limited Series or Movie for the role during tonight's show.

When Paulson got up on stage, she addressed her date for the evening with another moment that will be remembered in Emmys history:

"The more I learned about the real Marcia Clark — not the two-dimensional cardboard cutout I saw in the news, but the complicated, whip-smart, giant-hearted mother of two, who woke up every day, put both feet on the floor and dedicated herself to righting an unconscionable wrong — the loss of two innocents: Ron Goldman and Nicole Brown — the more I had to recognize that I, along with the rest of the world, had been superficial and careless in my judgement, and I am glad to be able to stand here today in front of everyone and tell you I’m sorry."

The real Clark was subjected to heavy criticism from the press and public throughout the O.J. Simpson trial. She endured such brutal treatment that she admitted to People in a 2016 interview, "I just wanted to disappear."
