Catelynn Lowell deserves way more support than a baby pig and Tyler Baltierra

On Monday's new episode of Teen Mom OG, Farrah and Simon continued to yell at each other but not break up, Amber got a new pet, Maci got a wedding dress and venue, Catelynn adopted a ($3,000) baby pig, and in a terribly heartbreaking scene, realized that her anxiety was far too much for her to handle on her own.

More: Teen Mom 2's Javi Marroquin has a super-adorable reunion with his sons

So far this season, Catelynn and Tyler have talked about moving, actually moved, had a falling out with Teresa regarding Carly, had a not-private speaker phone call with Dr. Drew about Catelynn's medical history, contemplated having more babies, vetoed having more babies (at least for now), discussed Catelynn's weight, a conversation which led to Tyler incurring the wrath of America, and now, become the parents to one tiny pig. It does seem like said pig is more Catelynn's than a shared pet, since Tyler spends the episode reiterating his horror in regard to the price of it.

Catelynn and April go together to pick up the pig, and it's fun and silly and great to see Catelynn getting along with her mom and genuinely excited about something, but things spiral down pretty quickly that night when the pig squeals non-stop. When we see Catelynn again in the morning, she looks completely exhausted and miserable, and anyone who's been down a spiral of anxiety and depression understands that feeling of having to rally but really, really not being able to because even rolling over in bed is too much.

More: You might not see Chelsea Houska on Teen Mom 2, if what her dad said is true

Catelynn draws her own conclusions, telling the producer that her anxiety is out of control and she knows she needs to go away and deal with it. Although we knew Catelynn was going to rehab this season, watching her talk about feeling like a burden and not want to screw up Nova, all the while crying and holding the producer's hand, is just a lot to see, especially since Tyler is sitting near her, making no attempt at all to comfort her or tell her she isn't a burden or remind her that helping herself is helping Nova, and that's exactly how you don't screw up your kid. I don't know if any comments or gestures of love or support he made were edited out or what; I can't imagine what the benefit of that would be, unless the editors were seriously crunched for tim, or interested in making Tyler look bad (worse?). It's certainly possible and likely, in fact, that Tyler is himself exhausted and overwhelmed by the situation, and that he's finally realized that Catelynn needs more help than his "get it together" reminders can give her, but based on past performances, it's hard for me to cut him any slack.

As much as I wish Catelynn had been able to come to grips with needing help more privately, instead of on camera, it is important to see her talk about her anxiety and depression openly and admit that she can't just get up one day and be fixed. I'm glad she was able to leave the show for a while and be in a supportive, structured environment where she could deal with things.

(April, in case you were wondering, is now taking care of the pig, whose name is Pickle.)

General Hospital star Matt Cohen shouldn’t leave his daytime job

It looks like daytime is the hottest place to cast actors for primetime series. Even though General Hospital star Matt Cohen is no stranger to nighttime audiences, he is jumping networks from ABC to CBS for a new recurring role.

More: General Hospital’s Jack Wagner speaks candidly about his son’s drug addiction

Cohen will be headed to Criminal Minds: Beyond Borders for Season 2. His first episode will be in the season premiere, which debuts as a midseason replacement. He has already been on set to shoot the role, according to TV Line.

The news comes on the heels of Justin Hartley juggling multiple roles on The Young and the Restless, Mistresses and the much-hyped fall show, This Is Us. He recently departed the CBS soap in order to focus on the primetime show.

While soap fans are thrilled about Hartley’s success, he does leave a gaping hole in Y&R because his character, Adam Newman, made such an impact on the series. With Cohen joining GH only nine months ago, it does worry some ABC viewers that he might jump ship soon.

More: Why Genie Francis really quit General Hospital for 12 seasons

There seems to be a reason networks are plucking a lot of solid actors out of daytime television. If you talk to any performer who has worked on a soap, they will tell you it’s the best training ground because of the fast pace. It’s not unusual for an actor to tackle 30 pages of script in a day.

Hartley flexed his acting muscles and delivered consistently for Y&R. It makes sense that after his turn on Mistresses, NBC found him a perfect fit for their new ensemble show. The same thing seems to be happening for Cohen’s career as well.

More: The real reason The Young and the Restless's Burgess Jenkins left the show

However, soap fans shouldn’t worry just yet. Cohen’s new role on the CBS series is intended to be short-term. He has a history with the Beyond Borders executive producer Adam Glass, who is a former writer/EP on Supernatural. Cohen appeared three times on the show between 2008 and 2015 as Young John Winchester.

It’s time for the fans to celebrate Cohen and Hartley’s success because primetime is seeing what all of us knew all along — these guys have talent.

Turn your kitchen into the perfect fall retreat for cold nights

Fall is on the horizon and the nesting season is about to begin. Days are getting shorter and the weather is getting colder, making us want to stay indoors. My mom’s favorite saying – 'tidy home, tidy mind' – always comes to my mind this time of year.

More: Reducing your carbon footprint isn't just for the earth — it's for your kids

It particularly refers to one of the busiest spaces in the house – the kitchen. There are so many wonderful ideas on how to reorganize and redecorate your kitchen and bring life to it. Plus, this is the time of year when we start reexamining our attitudes and future plans, which is enough to inspire refreshing changes both in your life and in the home.

Here’s my version of readying my kitchen for fall.

Declutter the kitchen

In order to handle this task with care, you need to empty all the cupboards, drawers and cabinets and take out all the cutlery, pots and pans, and the rest of the kitchen contents. Next, throw away all the unnecessary products, food and spices which have expired and make a list of all the kitchen items you need to purchase. I also love to treat myself to a few new gadgets and other kitchenware. I bought myself a new Scanpan the other day, and am looking at a new faucet as well.

This can also be the perfect time to express your creativity. Reorganize the kitchen space so that it becomes more spacious. For instance, it’s always a good idea to categorize kitchen utensils by storing them separately, or reorganize and change the position of the dining table and chairs. You will instantly feel the enormous effect this change brings about on the overall atmosphere of the room.

Add rustic decorations

A kitchen is not only a place for cooking and preparing food, it's where family and friends gather and enjoy chit-chat while having tasty meals. Fall is the perfect season for simple decorative projects that make the kitchen even more appealing. Pumpkins and squashes on the table will add a rustic touch to the interior and give it a warm feel. Decor pieces such as twigs, branches and bright leaves will create a sense of festivity. Finally, bring in the spirit of the fall using bright and vibrant colors such as golden yellow, orange and various shades of red. It will turn a kitchen into a warm and cozy place, and create a sense of cheerfulness.

Bring nature indoors

In the fall, nature is experiencing plenty of change. Juicy fruits of summer give way to crunchy dried fruits, and all kinds of seeds. The temperatures are lower which brings our attention to vegetables that resist freezing such as all the root vegetables (garlic, onion, potato), as well as various delicious squashes and gourds. You can get one or two of those lovely baskets to keep vegetables in. As for energy-rich nuts and seeds, buy a few glass jars and fill them with this highly nutritious food. They will add heartiness to any dish and bring warmth into any kitchen.

More: 6 summer drinks that are so refreshing you won't need AC

Try out new meals

The very beginning of September marks the beginning of the fall, and it can get pretty busy as most of us have to gather significant momentum for new projects or preparing kids for school. Kicking it into gear after a lazy summer can be challenging, and that’s why it is especially important to plan your meals ahead. There will be a lot of canning, drying and pickling of foods this time of year, as well as experimenting with a wide range of delicious meals that will produce warm odors and create a perfect homey atmosphere.

Make sure your kitchen is ready for all the deliciousness it will produce in the coming chilly months!

Single mom disguises herself as a man so her kid will feel better

$

The story of the Texas single mom who pulled out all the stops to make sure her son enjoyed his school's Donuts with Dad event has to make you smile.

More: So what if I pee in front of my kids

Yevette Vasquez of Fort Worth donned a baseball cap, plaid shirt, fake mustache and even a splash of cologne to dress as a man and accompany her son Elijah to the donuts event. After Vasquez posted the pictures of her as "Dad" on her Facebook page, they quickly went viral.

Partly because Elijah looks so darned happy to have his mom by his side at school. Partly because this savvy mom put her fabulous getup together in only seven minutes. And partly because for all the single parents out there, this is so relatable. When you're the only one holding the parenting reins, you have to do everything.

More: What does a stay-at-home mom do when her kids go to school?

Elijah was clearly delighted with his mom's makeover, and Vasquez found that most — although not all — of the dads at the event were supportive of her. It takes strength of character to step out of your comfort zone, whether that's sticking on a fake mustache, improving your soccer skills or learning how to French braid like a boss. All in all, it was a positive experience, and if it inspires other single moms to do something similar, that's great.

But Vasquez's story has made us wonder whether it's simply time to do away with these gendered school events. Some kids don't have dads. Some have two dads. Some don't have moms. Some have two moms. Some don't have any moms or dads. Some have a mom and a dad, but they might not show up for donuts. Many single parents don't see themselves as having to assume the (separate) roles of "Mom" and "Dad." You simply have to be everything, and stereotypes are forgotten. Moms don't feel like they're playing Dad when they build their kid's new bed or chase them at the park. Dads don't feel like they're playing Mom when they wipe away tears and bake cookies. These are simply things that have to be done. It's not the traditional two-parent family setup, after all, so for the most part those traditional gender roles go out the window.

More: Schools may do away with valedictorian title because it's too 'competitive'

Kids who don't have a dad shouldn't feel they're missing out on a fun school event. Open it up to whoever is the special person in each kid's life, and we're really reflecting the vast spectrum of families in 2016.

Dylan Farrow's new baby is literally bearing good news for Mom

It was a very happy Labor Day for Hollywood legend Mia Farrow, who has become a grandmother for the 11th time! The proud 71-year-old shared the news on Twitter Monday, revealing that her daughter Dylan, 31, had given birth to a daughter.

More: We'd all be 'stupid' to judge Farrah Abraham's latest mom faux pas

Dylan announced her pregnancy in April and revealed that she and husband Dana had already chosen a name, but they kept it secret until their baby girl — Evangeline — arrived.

Dylan Farrow baby name

Dylan Farrow baby name

Evangeline is a Greek name meaning "bearer of good news," and despite its classical roots, it has enjoyed a huge surge in popularity over the past decade. In 2015, it was No. 261 on the U.S. baby girl name chart. It's the perfect choice for those who like Eva (a top 100 name since 2009) but want something a little less popular. Canadian actress and star of Lost Evangeline Lilly is the most famous bearer of the name. It's a popular choice for musicians, with Emmylou Harris, Cocteau Twins, Marc Broussard and Matthew Sweet all releasing songs named "Evangeline."

More: Old-fashioned baby names perfect for your very modern baby

Evangeline is the first child for Dylan, who Mia adopted in 1985 when she was 2 weeks old. The Florida-based artist and writer, who married Dana in 2010, has largely stayed out of the limelight — aside from the bombshell letter she wrote for The New York Times in 2014, detailing the alleged sex abuse at the hands of her adopted father, Woody Allen. But now that she's the mom of Mia Farrow's 11th grandchild, she may have to prepare herself for a little more attention.

Mia herself is mom to 14 children. With her first husband, André Previn, Mia had twins Matthew and Sascha and son Fletcher, and they adopted Lark, Summer "Daisy" and Soon-Yi. Following her split from Previn, Mia adopted Moses Farrow as a single mom. After meeting Woody Allen and failing to conceive a child naturally, Mia adopted Dylan Farrow. After almost five years of trying to conceive, Mia and Woody did have a biological child together: Satchel "Ronan." Mia adopted Tam when her relationship with Woody was on shaky ground (she had learned of his affair with Soon-Yi only one month previously), and later added adopted kids Isaiah, Gabriel, Kaeli-Shea and Frankie-Minh to her brood.

After raising 14 kids, she's got plenty experience to be hands-on with her gorgeous new granddaughter.

Why getting an engagement ring fills me with total dread

$

0

I recently got engaged to the love of my life on vacation in the desert. We were joking about what the most fun, ridiculous wedding would look like ("There could be an X-Files theme!" "A wedding in a cave!" "All-you-can-eat coconut cream pie!"), then suddenly we switched from the third person to the first person. Before I knew it, we were planning our real-life wedding, and I have no clue who had the idea first. Our engagement happened organically and unconventionally. There was no genuflecting on one knee as I was presented with a ginormous diamond ring in an embarrassing restaurant scene. I wasn't caught off guard in any way, and I'm thankful for that. We decided to get married the way we decide to do everything: through conversation and open communication. And suddenly we were in full-on planning mode, dreaming up the most out-there "us" wedding we could possibly have.

I was over the moon — until I started telling people.

"Where's your ring?" a friend demanded of me upon hearing my happy news.

"Uh... I just haven't got it yet," I muttered, feeling like I'd somehow failed some sort of girl test. Two months in and still ringless, it's a question I've gotten quite accustomed to hearing, though it doesn't make it any less annoying.

More: I don't regret not changing my name for marriage

Don't get me wrong, my fiancé has tried to buy me a ring. But any time he's brought up the subject of getting a ring, I've shut him down. When we pass jewelry stores, I find myself speeding up, hoping he doesn't get the idea of going inside. When he does, I'll invent some lame but plausible excuse. "We have to get tacos first," I'll say. "My fingers are too puffy today." Or simply, "Maybe tomorrow."

I may be happily counting down the days to my wedding, but getting an engagement ring fills me with complete and utter dread. Why? Because I want no part in the girl-on-girl action I've witnessed lately. Whenever my engagement comes up in conversation in a group of other 30-ish women, here's what always seems to go down: left hands inevitably shoot up into the air while women begin comparing rings the way they might compare handbags. One woman is always declared a winner, not overtly, but the other women seem to have an innate understanding of who has the "best ring" (in most cases, it is the most expensive ring). The woman with the "best ring" holds it out for other women to fawn over, while those with inferior rings tuck theirs away.

Call me cynical, but this just doesn't feel very romantic to me.

But people are spending more and more money on engagement rings. According to a 2015 national study by The Knot, the average engagement ring costs a whopping $5,855 today. And when you drop that kind of money on a ring, I totally get why you'd want to whip it out socially to invite others to give you their approval. I'm not going to pretend I wouldn't do the same. The problem with this scenario, though, is that these rings aren't really functioning as symbols of love at all, but as status symbols that place us in competition with one another.

When women say, "Can I see it," I feel like what they're really saying is "How much money do you guys make?" "How much did he think you were worth?" "How on trend you are?"

More: 3 tips for beating wedding blues from a plus-size bride

The popularity of wearing diamond engagement rings actually has pretty creepy underpinnings. Basically, a British-controlled diamond mining company in South Africa hired a New York–based ad agency, N.W. Ayer, to sell its diamonds back in 1938. According to The Atlantic, the ad agency decided to market celebrities rocking big diamond rings as "role models" for those with less money. The agency explained their diamond-marketing tactics in their 1948 strategy paper: "We spread the word of diamonds worn by stars of screen and stage, by wives and daughters of political leaders, by any woman who can make the grocer's wife and the mechanic's sweetheart say 'I wish I had what she has.'" So the entire diamond ring industry today was built on manufacturing envy, competition and insecurity among women.

The Atlantic writer Matthew O'Brien writes that engagement rings became a thing in the '30s, just after legislators scrapped the law against breaking engagements. Since women could no longer take legal action against men who'd decided to give them the slip before their wedding day, they needed "collateral," O'Brien explains. "That way, if the couple never made it down the aisle, she'd at least be left with something. And that something was almost always small and shiny. The diamond ring was insurance."

So can you blame me for being hesitant when it comes to the whole make-him-prove-his-love-in-diamonds insanity? For wanting to keep my fingers naked just a little longer?

Katie Holmes' silence has an expiration date & it's not good for Tom Cruise

Please, oh, please, oh, please, oh, please let this be true.

More: Katie Holmes & Jamie Foxx had a romantic date — at a Barbra Streisand concert

Katie Holmes has been remarkably silent about her now nearly 5-year-old divorce from Tom Cruise, despite the rumors that have constantly surrounded them about how his dedication to Scientology may have caused the divorce, and before the split, caused her to put up with some seriously weird stuff. Now, a new rumor may change everything.

Radar Online is reporting that Holmes signed a contract at the time of the divorce, and that it stipulated she had to stay mum about the details of the split for the first five years. Math time: If the rumor is true, that would mean Holmes can start talking in 2017, which is just a few months away.

More: Katie Holmes' reaction to Leah Remini's ABC special is fascinating (VIDEO)

The report says a lot of topics are off the table for public discussion by Holmes for the duration of the contract, including her dating life, Scientology and Cruise himself.

"Katie signed a clause in her quickie divorce settlement that prevents her from embarrassing Tom in various ways, like talking about him or Scientology, or publicly dating another man for five years after the divorce," a source told Radar about the alleged document. "She’s allowed to date, but she cannot do so in a public fashion, and she’s not supposed to let any boyfriend near their daughter, Suri."

The insider continued, "Katie wanted out of the marriage so badly, she agreed to the terms — and got $4.8 million in child support, plus another $5 million for herself."

That means that all the details about Holmes' rumored relationship with Jamie Foxx could become public, and so could the details of the celeb divorce that shocked us all almost five years ago.

Pie pumpkins vs. carving pumpkins: How they're different and why it matters

$

Spending an afternoon at the pumpkin patch is what fall is all about, but you can't drive just any pumpkin off the lot. While all pumpkins share some similarities — they're round and orange and gourd-y — there's a big difference between pumpkins used for carving and pumpkins used for baking. Meaning, if you try to make a pie out of a carving pumpkin, or vice versa, you're not going to like what you see.

Not to worry, lovers of fall and all things pumpkin spice. It's pretty easy to separate the jack-o'-lantern pumpkins from the pie pumpkins once you know what you're looking for.

Carving pumpkins

In contrast to the flesh-packed pie pumpkin, carving pumpkins, commonly referred to as jack-o'-lantern pumpkins, were designed to make it easier to, well, carve. Jack-o'-lantern pumpkins have a thinner shell and typically have less flesh (or pumpkin guts) on the inside. The flesh is grainier and stringy. The inside of a carving pumpkin tends to contain more water than pie pumpkins.

Jack-o'-lantern pumpkins, also called carving pumpkins, are less fleshy and easier to carve:

  • Thinner shell
  • Less flesh/guts inside
  • Grainier/stringier flesh
  • Contain more water than pie pumpkins

More: DIY gilded pumpkins make for simple and elegant Thanksgiving decor

Pie pumpkins

Pie pumpkins, also called sugar pumpkins, are smaller in shape than the monstrous pumpkins you'd find at your typical pumpkin patch. Pie pumpkins are commonly found in the grocery store in the produce section or at farm stands. This small, round pumpkin is packed full of flesh that makes it a good choice for cooking. The pulp also has a better texture (less grainy) and is sweeter.

More: Pumpkin pie cheese appetizers

Compared to carving pumpkins, pie pumpkins, aka sugar pumpkins, are smaller and easier to bake:

  • Small and round
  • Normally found in the grocery store or at farm stands
  • Full of flesh that's good for cooking
  • Pulpy, sweeter flesh on the inside

Next up: The 6 best pumpkins for baking

{pageBreak}

The 6 best pumpkins for baking

Now the distinction is clear — you're never going to use a carving pumpkin for baking or a baking pumpkin for carving again. (How embarrassing.) But as you're gathering up your ingredients to make your famous pumpkin pie this fall, you may come upon still more decisions to be made. Even among the pie pumpkins, you've got choices aplenty. It's hard to know where to begin.

Here are some of our favorite sugar pumpkins and why:

  1. Baby Bear: Teeny-tiny and super-cute, this petite pumpkin has a deep orange color and is popularly used to make flavorful pies because of its fine-grained flesh.
  2. Baby Pam: When you're looking for sugar pumpkins, you hear this name come up a lot. Baby Pam pumpkins are also deep orange and slightly larger than Baby Bears, with a sugary, string-less, dry flesh.
  3. Fairytale: As adorable as the name is, this sucker can get up to 30 pounds. And yes, it looks just like a pumpkin from the fairy tales, with a thick flesh that tastes more like winter squash.
  4. Cinderella: These names just keep getting cuter. Cinderella pumpkins are bright red-orange with a thick, moist flesh that has a sweet, custard-like flavor.
  5. New England Pie: Considered a classic fall baking pumpkin, the New England Pie pumpkin is round with a deep orange color, offering an almost perfect pumpkin pie taste.
  6. Winter Luxury: Now we're pulling out the big guns. This heirloom pumpkin has orange and white skin, a smooth flesh and a more rustic flavor.

To cook, or not to cook?

While many foodie enthusiasts tend to prefer cooking with a pie pumpkin over a carving pumpkin, you still can put your old jack-o'-lantern to use in recipes. The most common challenge with cooking a carving pumpkin is too much moisture. So after carving out the flesh, put it in a bowl, and let it sit in the fridge for a few hours. This should allow for water to separate from the flesh, which you can then drain before using.

Can any of the couples actually make it out of Paradise tonight?

This season of Bachelor in Paradise is beginning to come to a close. Chris Harrison told the four remaining couples that they need to decide if they can move their relationships into the real world where they can start considering marriage and having children. He referred to the successful couple from last season’s show, Jade and Tanner, and the potential the new couples have to live up to their standards.

More: What Married at First Sight doesn't understand about relationships

Throughout this season the couples have been referring to Jade and Tanner as their relationship goal, but that is not necessarily realistic. They are different people with unique relationship patterns far different from this glorified couple they're idealizing. While it may have worked for some, it may not work so well for others.

This show is about risk taking, falling in love fast, and getting engaged even faster. That makes time a big motivating factor that can make or break a relationship. Most of the remaining four couples have proclaimed some kind of declaration of love or wanting to move forward after they leave Paradise. Some even spoke of engagements happening in upcoming episodes. But, I wonder if these couples have had more conversations about real day-to-day life than the audience sees on the TV screen.

I hope they know what matters most about each other. That they talk about their jobs, religion, politics; meet family and friends; share future goals and values, and discuss financial issues and living arrangements. Do they know how the other handles stress and difficult times? Do they know this person well enough that love can last after the show? Getting engaged to be married is a big step obviously, but it is more than being able to get along on a beach resort while going on fun dates, and hanging out with friends. In Paradise, no one goes to work and no one has any stress. No one gets sick (well maybe Evan, but Carly handled that quite well) or has financial troubles or family problems. No one has to schedule appointments or figure out time management. No one really knows someone without having time for a relationship to develop in a natural way. It is an entertaining soap opera to watch, but these are real people with real feelings. Can they last in real relationships when they leave Mexico? I think the answer is maybe. Some couples may fair better than others. We already know that Nick is going to be the next Bachelor so his relationship did not make it out of Paradise. The three left might have a better chance if they can truly figure out their relationship development in real life. If they have genuine love I think it could work. But, real life is very different than a holiday.

Let’s watch and see who gets engaged on tonight’s final episode. From the looks of it, Carly and Evan seem to have a genuine healthy relationship since it grew not just from an instant attraction based off chemistry, but rather by getting to know each other more and more each day. Lace and Grant also seem to feel strongly about each other. So, I guess we will all see tonight who declares that they will love after Paradise.

After three months of doubting, Taylor Swift & Tom Hiddleston are donezo

Taylor Swift and Tom Hiddleston have called it quits.

More: The best thing Taylor Swift can do for her relationship is play it cool

Multiple sources confirmed to Us Weekly that the couple, who had been dating for about three months, broke it off because Swift was uncomfortable with how public Hiddleston wanted their relationship to be.

Although Swift and Hiddleston started dating in June, they never made an official public appearance together. According to a report in The Sun, Hiddleston asked Swift to accompany him on the red carpet at the Emmys even though she's never joined a boyfriend on a red carpet before.

More: You can see Kanye West naked for $4 million & we have so many questions

An insider says it was that move that made Swift start to doubt the genuineness of their relationship.

"Tom wants their relationship to be public, even asking Taylor to go to the Emmys with him, but Taylor wants to keep her private life private," the source told The Sun. "Tom's need for their relationship to be so public so quickly makes her uncomfortable. She tried to be OK with it in the beginning but fears he is in love with the idea of her and not falling in love with her for the right reasons. Taylor is an independent young woman and doesn’t feel like she needs a boyfriend to make her feel complete."

Although paparazzi photos of Swift and Hiddleston were all over the internet in the beginning of their relationship, they haven't been photographed together at all since July. The timing of the flood of photos — right as Kim Kardashian released a video showing that Swift had lied about approving a controversial Kanye West lyric about her — has had many fans wondering if their relationship was even real or if it was all a publicity stunt to combat the bad press.

The source says that aspect of the relationship was also getting to Hiddleston.

"Tom is just done with it," the insider revealed. "It bothers him so much that they’ve become known as this fauxmance laughingstock."

The gross thing people do with food that we all pretend doesn't happen

So you're at a party, and there's a giant bowl of guacamole. You dig in with a big ol' chip, and you take that bite, and then you look, and there's a whole three-quarters of a chip left. What could be sadder than a guac-less chip, especially when you're standing right in front of that bowl? So what do you do? Muscle the rest of that dry chip down anyway, throw it away when no one's looking, or — gasp! — do you double-dip?

More: Need-to-know hand-washing facts

Well, if you're like 82 percent of people, you double-dip.

You read that right. Angie's List surveyed 2,000 people across the country, and 82 percent of those people admitted to double-dipping at parties. And those are the people who admit it!

double dipping

All this time I've been the chump swallowing the dry chip. Geez, if I'd only known double-dipping was our big secret social norm, I could have saved myself from Empty Tortilla Chip Throat Burn. Just kidding, I actually hunt for the smaller chips, which means yes, my hands have touched your chips. Because guess what else: Almost everyone reaches onto that platter of shared food with their bare hands instead of using those cheese toothpicks or a serving utensil.

More: Why all those huge food recalls are actually good news

But that's less gross, isn't it? Because double-dipping means passive contact with someone's saliva, and hands are just... Oh God, where have those hands been? Hands could actually be worse!

Speaking of hands and worse, the tidbit I was most horrified to learn is that 67 percent of people admit they don't wash their hands before cooking.

OK, so we thought we'd busted all the crazy period myths out there. We all know you can go swimming during your period, yes? That it's OK to have sex during your period? That it's equally OK to exercise, wash your hair and drink cold water during your period?

One of the myths that is less cut-and-dried is the belief that women are always moody and irrational during their period. Yes, lots of women experience some level of PMS when they're menstruating, which may include moodiness, irritability and irrational behaviour. PMS is a real condition that can affect women of all ages to varying degrees.

Having said all that, millions of women across the world manage to cope with symptoms of PMS month after month. More than cope: They run households; they kick ass at work; they make important decisions affecting the lives of many. They fight for their countries; they save lives; they make an enormous, invaluable contribution to the world. And they do all that without taking a break to bleed.

More: What getting your period at an early age means for your health as an adult

We need this to be the message we send women about their periods. Not that they should doubt their abilities to do one or more of the above. However, an Australian executive coach has caused controversy with an article on HerCanberra.

One of Sarah Macarthur-King's tips to menstruating women is to avoid making any "critical decisions," and if you absolutely can't avoid doing so, get someone you trust to check it over to make sure you're, um, sane. Unsurprisingly, Macarthur-King's article, titled "PMT: How to manage your emotions in leadership," caused such a stir on Facebook that the link was taken down.

We can't comment on the personal experiences of Macarthur-King or her clients, and yes, some of the critics of her article took her words out of context. But it's massively insulting to declare — or even imply — that women cannot be "consistent and professional" during menstruation.

"'Psycho' is not a leadership quality," Macarthur-King tells us. She's absolutely right, but that has nothing to do with gender, and by using language like that in an article about periods, she's simply reinforcing the negative connotations that already plague women in leadership.

These hazelnut-infused cocktails are here to help you ease into fall

Welcome to the season I call "fummer," which rhymes with bummer. It's past Labor Day, so summer is, for all intents and purposes, over. But it's not officially fall yet, and some of us are expecting 90-degree F weather still this week. If this in-between state is bumming you out, I have the perfect drinks for you.

More: 20 gorgeous cocktails you need to make now (or as soon as would be responsible)

The DOC is part margarita, with tequila and lime juice. But it also has puréed bell pepper and thyme, two late-summer/early-fall flavors. And! It has Frangelico. You know, that hazelnut liqueur that comes in that monk-shaped bottle you always saw at your grandparents' house? Well, the monk is making a comeback, and it's about time, I think.

For an easier take on that idea, there's the Gran Paradiso, made of Frangelico, mezcal and espresso.

And finally, the easiest of them all: Italian '75 — basically Frangelico with lemon juice and prosecco.

Kim Zolciak's daughter didn't get a nose job, and she has video to prove it

Kim Zolciak's oldest daughter, Brielle Biermann, might have a future as a courtroom lawyer, because the girl clearly knows how to break down evidence.

Biermann was relaxing with some 2012 episodes of her family's reality show over the long Labor Day weekend when she noticed that, while her appearance has changed quite a bit over the past four years, one thing has remained the same: her nose.

So of course Biermann jumped on the opportunity to silence all the haters on social media who have been claiming she had plastic surgery.

More: If you've ever wanted to watch Kim Zolciak get butt injections, now you can

"So I'm sitting here watching Don't Be Tardy for the Wedding Season 1, and I just noticed that there is a very good view of my nose," Biermann emphatically said in a Snapchat post captured by the Daily Mail. "And since y'all like to insinuate that I got my nose done, I'm about to rewind and show, y'all, and compare... Pay attention, OK? Look at my nose and compare. It's the same, y'all!"

Biermann then continued to throw it back even further to The Real Housewives of Atlanta Season 1, when she was just 10 years old.

"My nose," she proclaims with a dramatic pause, "looks the same. Looks the same."

And we have to agree with her, y'all, her nose really does look the same now as when she was a preteen.

Biermann claims she hasn't had a nose job, but she has been very open about the fact that she gets lip injections. She even recently posted some pics from 2014 on Twitter, illustrating how much the plumpers have changed her look.

Something tells us if Biermann had, indeed, gotten a nose job, she would probably cop to it.

The brutal killing of Major Crimes' Taylor was the right thing to do

Whoa. The Aug. 5 episode of Major Crimes was breathtakingly rough to watch. The crew was forced to deal with the harsh reality of losing one of their own when Robert Gossett's Assistant Chief of Special Operations Russell Taylor was gunned down in an insane courtroom shootout.

While the event left most fans reeling and wondering about the future of the series, the show's creator, James Duff, just gave some inside scoop that will help everyone feel better about what's to come.

For one, Gossett — who has played Taylor since before Major Crimes even existed, starting with 2005's The Closer — wasn't blindsided by the death of his beloved character. In fact, according to Duff, his release from Major Crimes might have been a bit of a relief.

More: Sanchez's Major Crimes quest for love will tangle him up in porn crime

"That was a difficult conversation, but not as hard as you might think," Duff recently told TV Line of telling Gossett about his departure. "Robert has been playing this part for 12 years. Robert is also quite an accomplished stage actor, and someone who was chafing a bit, saying, 'Gosh, this part is getting smaller. I don’t have as much to do as I used to' — and I couldn’t disagree with him. He had suggested a couple of times that it felt like it might be that his story had played out, and I couldn’t disagree with him on that either."

So, though it may be hard to bid adieu to Taylor, leaving him behind before his story line jumped the shark was what was best for the show — and for Gossett's creative process.

Not that it wasn't hard for the cast and crew to see Gossett go.

More: Will NCIS' brand new cast totally change the vibe of the show?

"It’s hard only because we’re all family here, and letting go of a family member, even under the best of circumstances, is hard to do," Duff said. "I don’t know how they manage it on The Walking Dead! I would be a nervous wreck. But I needed it for storytelling purposes; it wasn’t just, 'Oh, let’s kill off a character,' or that the show was too expensive. It was all about dramatizing this theme as thoroughly as we could and stay relevant in a world where police officers are at more risk than ever, and also looking at racism in all of its different variants. We looked at racism last year in our five-parter, and I see no reason to let go of it. It’s a big issue."

Taylor's death will also lead to some cast shakeups that will breathe new life into the show. Duff shared that celebrated actress Camryn Manheim has already been cast as a Deputy Chief of Operations in the LAPD and will be a candidate for Taylor's position.

What do you think of Taylor's departure from Major Crimes? Do you think it will be good or bad for the show?

If Chris Noth had his way, SVU's Benson would not exist as we now know her

If Chris Noth ever tries to offer you career advice, we kindly suggest you move along — quickly.

While Noth may be a gifted actor, his talent clearly doesn't lie in doling out guidance to friends on what jobs to take. Just ask Mariska Hargitay. If she had listened to Noth years ago, Law & Order: SVU's Olivia Benson would not be the the icon she is today — and Hargitay's career would look very, very different.

"I shouldn't give advice ever," Noth said in a Tuesday appearance on Live with Kelly. "She may not remember this, but Mariska Hargitay... [Law & Order creator] Dick Wolf had us go to a baseball game and he invited Mariska and was going to offer her this part on Special Victims, Law & Order. I remember being on the subway on the way and she goes, 'I don't know whether to do this. What's Law & Order?' And I was like 'Don't do it!'"

More: SVU fans, breathe easy — Mariska Hargitay is certain Benson isn't an alcoholic

Noth actually had the misguided notion that SVU wouldn't be a good move for Hargitay and told her to take on some stage work instead.

"Go do some regional theater," he told her.

Good thing she didn't, because SVU ended up being — as Noth puts it — the "longest running show ever."

Chris Noth on Live with Kelly

Chris Noth on Live with Kelly

Seriously, Noth? Regional theater over a show that is now going into its 18th season?

Now, let's just take a moment to imagine a world where Hargitay doesn't play Olivia Benson. The Benson/Stabler sexual tension wouldn't have been nearly as hot, we would have missed out on Hargitay's rough, yet somehow totally vulnerable portrayal of the detective as she tirelessly defends rape victims, and well, it would just suck not seeing Hargitay's gorgeous face light up our screens.

More: The Law & Order: SVU season finale is so major, it made Mariska Hargitay cry

If Hargitay had taken Noth's advice almost 20 years ago, the course of history would have been changed forever — and a Benson-free existence is a world we don't want to live in.

What do you think SVU would be like without Hargitay as Benson?

Athlete shows why it pays for women to be 'too muscular'

MMA athlete Miesha Tate was in the right place at the right time over the weekend. Tate was climbing a mountain outside Las Vegas when she encountered a mom struggling to bring her daughter — with a broken arm — down the hill.

"I offered to carry the little girl to the bottom," Tate wrote on Facebook. After the young girl, named Kai, gave consent, "I preceded to carry the sweet little thing all the way to the bottom. Kai and I learned a lot about each other on the roughly 2 mile descent and It's fair to say she inspired me."

Miesha Tate

Tate's strength and visible muscle tone is beautiful and helps her with MMA, but she has been criticized — like many other muscular woman — for not being feminine enough. "I have been told many times that I am 'too buff' or 'manly' that I should stop lifting weights, that it's 'gross' and not attractive for a woman," she wrote on Instagram.

That "manliness" came in handy when it was needed most and someone needed her help. That's what so many who criticize athletic, muscular women forget: There's a real benefit too being "too muscular" or "too bulky."

"I am so happy I never listened to the limitations others wanted to put on me and I hope that our youth knows that don't have to conform," she wrote on Instagram. "And I just have to say this was one of the most rewarding days of my athletic career."

Sofie Dossi shut the haters up tonight on America's Got Talent

$

Sometimes, acts on America's Got Talent blow you away from the very beginning. And sometimes, they creep up on you over time until you thank your lucky stars that the judges saw something that you missed earlier on. I'm beginning to suspect this is the case with Sofie Dossi, a contortionist I have loved watching for some time but have only recently realized is one of my favorites of the entire season.

More: The America's Got Talent judges owe Tape Face an apology

Dossi is unique in that she can very quickly apply critiques and improve the quality of her act. She's always getting better. Personal growth isn't necessarily a priority on America's Got Talent, but it's always fun to see a contestant who can take an act that's already great and transform it into something truly spectacular. That's exactly what I believe Dossi has done with her number, which now has an element of sophistication that it lacked earlier this season.

Sofie Dossi
Image: NBC

Tonight was a bit different for Dossi in that her act lacked a flaming bow and arrow. In the past, this has been the signature moment in her number — shooting a flaming bow and arrow with her feet, while balancing on a wobbly pedestal. It's the perfect way to end a marvelous performance, but it's by no means the only way, as she demonstrated tonight. This time, she didn't bring the same explosive wow factor, but what she did offer was just as good.

More: America's Got Talent gets too real with crossbow stunt gone wrong

What I love most about Dossi is not her spectacular stage presence or the mesmerizing way she moves her body, but rather, her versatility. From bending her body like a pretzel to shooting arrows with her feet, she can do all kinds of amazing things. Knowing this, I am always displeased when I hear people disparage her allegedly limited skill set.

Sofie Dossi

Tonight, the haters had to eat their words. Several were predicting another session with the flaming bow and arrow, but instead, they witnessed something entirely different. I enjoyed seeing the negative predictions on Twitter (mainly because the critics were so wrong), but the feedback after Dossi's performance was even better.

No matter how the votes shake out, I think Dossi has a very promising future. She's talented and enthusiastic, but most importantly, she can take on new challenges. She exemplifies the spirit of adventure that makes America's Got Talent such a fun show to watch.

Trevor Walker is Below Deck's best villain yet

Remember Bryan Kattenburg from Below Deck Med? Well, he's back, but with a new hairdo and a new vocabulary. Below Deck's answer to Kattenburg is named Trevor Walker, and let's just say, he's already managed to attract some major vitriol on Twitter. Viewers mainly take issue with his air of superiority; from the very beginning, he made it his mission in life to let everybody know that he's the senior deckhand. Keep in mind, this charter has a bosun, so senior deckhand's not as big of a deal as Walker claims.

Trevor Walker
Image: Bravo

It's probably too soon to know for sure if Walker can handle the demands of being a senior deckhand on a drama-prone yacht, but he sure isn't off to a good start. He's already managed to alienate the other deckhands, who don't seem all that eager to work with somebody who acts so arrogant.

Kattenburg isn't the only Below Deck Med crew member with whom Walker can be compared. Walker also has quite a few things in common with Danny Zureikat, including, most notably, an apparent lack of discretion when it comes to dealing with guests. He's already taken his shirt off for a few very fortunate female guests, and I won't be surprised at all if his inappropriate mingling extends beyond mere shirtlessness. Arrogance, cluelessness... I anticipate a lot of deckhand drama in the near future!
Trevor Walker
Image: Bravo
Below Deck is always best when there's a good villain, and nobody is better at playing villain than a crew member in a role of authority. Captain Lee and Kate Chastain are anything but villains, so that leaves Walker to fill a very big set of shoes. So far, he's doing a terrible job as a senior deckhand and a wonderful job as the reality star that everybody loves to hate. Watch out, viewers, because there is surely plenty of juicy drama in Below Deck's future!
