I was that 'entitled' millennial whose parents never said 'no'

I’ve heard the millennial generation called the “me, me, me generation,” though I prefer to think of us as the “yes, we can” generation. When I was growing up, "no" was a word I associated with cautious old people like school principals and fluorescent vest-wearing crossing guards. The first time I saw someone wearing a shirt that read, “What part of NO don’t you understand?” I snorted, but the truth is that there was still a lot about "no" I didn’t understand.

My parents, particularly my workaholic father who left the house at 4:30 a.m. and returned just in time for dinner, never said no to me as a child. They had been Haight-Ashbury hippies, long-haired, unencumbered by underwear and rules. In the 1980s, my parents left behind their days of free love and communal living, but they still believed that people of all ages should be allowed to make their choices, their own mistakes.

More: The '90s were awesome, so here's how to parent like they're back

I can’t remember a single instance of my father denying one of my requests, however outlandish. He allowed me to play as many rounds of the carnival game as it took to win the biggest prize, a stuffed panda so big I could barely hold it myself. On Sundays, my father let me order the extra large size chocolate malt, so long as I gave him a big sip. During our family meetings, he listened without interrupting to my objections about our allowance and the ban on television in our home. When I was a teenager, my family of five traveled to Jamaica — my idea — because I alone loved Bob Marley and reggae music. My father let me drive his convertible with the top down and drink wine with dinner. The party was always at my house. “If you’re going to break the rules,” my father said, “don’t get caught.”

My limited experience with the word "no" worked very well for me... until it didn’t.

When I wasn’t able to talk my way out of a totally legitimate speeding ticket, my father said, “Did you call the cop ‘sir?’ You should have called him ‘sir.’” When I wasn’t accepted at Yale as an undergraduate, I was mystified. No? Just no? Not even maybe?

A part of me misses that self-assuredness, that sense that I could get anyone to do anything, that I could always extract a yes with enough skillful, focused effort, like my father did in the business world.

I know what you are thinking: young people these days, or what a spoiled brat. I know I am not special, that things cost money, that money takes hard work to earn for most people, including me. But I was groomed to act entitled. I was explicitly told I could do and be anything if I worked hard enough.

More: I need trigger warnings, so why wouldn't I want my kids to get them too?

I developed excellent self-esteem, work ethics, and interpersonal skills within the gilded palace of my all-affirmative upbringing. But the walls began to crumble when it came time for me to make it in the working world.

There is a well-documented disconnect between entry-level millennials and their baby boomer bosses, who bristle at the millennials’ optimism, which they perceive as overconfidence.

One boss called me audacious, which I had to look up in the dictionary. My dad chuckled when I told him this. A different administrator, noticing my appalled reaction to her denial of my request for a day off, tried to soften the blow by adding, “But it’s true that closed mouths don’t get fed.”

My mouth is rarely closed. I lose my voice a few times a year from all the volume of articulation. I have headed up countless committees, and spearheaded multiple mini-movements in the workplace. I have finally arrived at the foregone conclusion: It really is impossible to get everyone to agree with you, to go along with your plans, no matter how charismatic you are. Nearly 20 years after leaving my childhood home, I have come to accept, and even to celebrate, that the answer is sometimes just plain no.

More: Thanks for making childhood suck, you sleepover-banning jerks

It took years of working as a classroom teacher for me to learn the value of no. I was tentative at first, shy about saying no, that word I never heard growing up. I tried, “Um, that is not a good idea,” but my boisterous kindergarten students gave me a literal crash course in the importance of rules and boundaries. A classroom simply cannot function without them. When 5-year-olds ask if they can be in charge of the projector or stand on their desks, unless you have cash to replace the equipment or time to spend in the emergency room, the answer is just plain no.

These days I dispense no like candy.

I want my own children (4 and 6 years old) to live in reality in a way I did not. I want them to know that my trust in them and in the world has limits, defined edges.

No, you may not go to the park without me.

No, you may not grow your hair until you can sit on it.

No, you may not not wear a coat.

No, you may not eat dessert first.

No, you may not wear lipstick.

Hell no, you may not have a cell phone. You are 6.

When I deny my students’ and children’s requests, they usually shrug and figure out something else to do. Sometimes they even hug me and gaze into my eyes lovingly. No is not mean or callous or stingy. No can be as loving and generous as yes. It indicates conviction, safety, strength.

I see why my parents didn’t set limits for my sisters and me. We were inherently cautious, empathetic, eager to please. We were moralistic and obsessed with being and doing good. But not every child, and certainly not every adult, possesses these self-regulating qualities. Flipping the script from my childhood, I have found it is better in most situations to start with no and slowly build up, with time and trust, to yes.

Bruce Springsteen stops concert for marriage proposal

He's "The Boss" and can do anything he wants to do. And what Bruce Springsteen chose to do was stop his concert at the MetLife Stadium in New Jersey and invite a newly engaged couple on stage to celebrate their love.

Fittingly, Springsteen and the E Street Band were in the middle of performing their hit "Jersey Girl" when the singer looked out at the crowd and noticed something extraordinary was happening: a man had just proposed to his girlfriend during the sweet song, which features the lyrics, "My little girl gives me everything/ I know that someday she'll wear my ring." Springsteen asked guitarist Steven Van Zandt, "What's going on down there?" and the musician replied by showing him his ring finger.

And then, because he's one of the most giving performers of all time (seriously, Springsteen has been treating his fans to four-hour shows during this tour), he invited the couple up on stage and handed the groom-to-be a mic. "I love you more than anyone else in the world," the man told his fiancée. "I love you more than music itself. I love you more than Bruce!"

More: Bruce Springsteen's putting trans equality ahead of making money

The audience cheered on the couple, who then had a chance to slow dance in front of the band in what will surely be the most memorable night of their lives so far.

And, lucky us, the entire thing was caught on video:

More: Bruce Springsteen's Veteran's Day performance wasn't anti-American at all

Springsteen has been releasing albums since 1972 and is known as one of the most successful touring acts on the planet. He and the E Street Band were inducted into the Rock and Roll Hall of Fame in 2014, he has won countless awards for his musical contributions and he has used his celebrity to endorse political candidates such as Barack Obama. In other words, The Boss can stop his show whenever he wants, invite whomever he wants to grab the mic and continue to play hours of music at sold-out shows.

But that doesn't make it any less sweet to know that Springsteen will take a break for young love.

The Target store-brand snacks to buy today and thank us for tomorrow

I want to lead this article by saying “you’re welcome” to all of you, because it took some serious effort to research this one. I had to go into a Target on assignment, with the singular goal of trying out its house brand — Market Pantry — kids' snacks. I promised myself that this was going to be strictly business — no blacking out and finding myself in the parking lot two hours later, surrounded by sports bras, jumbo packs of toilet paper and some decorative birdhouses that were on clearance.

More: 10 things you must buy at Aldi

The good news is that I managed to only spend $99.58. That’s the first time I’ve ever stayed below $100! The bad news is that less than $30 of that was for snacks pertaining to this article. Though in that context, this is fantastic news, because I managed to stock an entire snack cabinet for less than 50 percent of what I’d normally pay at the supermarket. So yay?

Target has made some serious strides in its food department: expanding its existing Market Pantry line (now with snazzy new packaging!), introducing the Simply Balanced line and adding hundreds of brand-new products to fill up its rapidly multiplying grocery aisles. Here’s what you should fill your cart with the next time you brave its red aisles, because if you pad the whole thing with cookies, there will be less room for junk you don’t need.

Fig Fruit Chewy Cookies

Fig Fruit Chewy Cookies

I’m pretty sure Fig Fruit Chewy Cookies ($1.87) are actual Fig Newtons that they got off the back of a truck and repackaged. I have no complaint about that.

Chocolate Sandwich Cookies: Regular and Birthday Cake

Chocolate Creme Cookies:

Fun fact: We can’t really call these “fake Oreos,” because Oreos started as a ripoff of Hydrox cookies waaaaay back in the day, so they sort of have whatever is coming to them. Market Pantry isn’t messing around either and is coming out with different flavors of these chocolate creme cookies ($1.97).

Peanut Butter Crème Sandwich Cookies

I’ll be honest, I’d eat peanut butter sandwich cookies even if they were filled with broken glass and hobo blood, so I’m probably not the best person to be reviewing these. I can tell you, though, that these Peanut Butter Crème Sandwich Cookies ($1.79) did not seem to contain any hobo blood.

Simply Balanced Crunchy Peanut Cookies with Quinoa

OK, I’m starting to realize I may have gone a bit heavy in the cookie aisle, but it’s fine, because these Simply Balanced Crunchy Peanut Cookies ($2.99) are healthy. The front of the box says they have quinoa in them! I won’t look at the back of the box, because that’s where the truth lives, and I’d rather stay in my comfortable bubble of lies.

I asked my kids what they thought of these Fruit-flavored Snacks, and they said, “Good.” I said, “Mommy’s writing an article about these, so could you give me a little more?” And they said, “Really good.”

I don’t know why I bought these for the kids, because they’re most definitely bad for them. It’s like, why are we even bothering with this “granola bar” charade? They know it’s junk food, we know it’s junk food — why don’t we just cut the oats out of this and go whole hog? I still gave in to the kids' begging, because by that point, we had been in the store for 40 minutes, and I was just done with them. They’re lucky I didn’t slap orange tags on their heads and abandon them in clearance.

I told a stranger she needed to be nicer to her kid, and I'd do it again

I thought her mother was her sister. An honest mistake; even though I myself was a teenage mother who looked four years younger than I was, I still don’t expect to see baby-faced girls mothering 5-year-olds in the unbearably homogenized suburbia where I live. The mom also had the markers of an older sister: tons of experimental makeup, Snapchatting, blowing her bubblegum to the ceiling before snapping it shut with her sparkling white teeth — and a seriously bad attitude toward the little person she was pushing in a red Target cart.

“She talks too much,” she said as her little one began talking to my daughter, also 5.

More: I royally screwed up parenting because I was abused as a kid

I laughed. “They talk a lot at this age.”

The two 5-year-olds began talking fervently, and as the snapping, Snapchatting not-sister leaned forward, I heard her say, “Everything isn’t about you, brat. Move out of the way!”

The 5-year-old made no eye contact with her. I wouldn’t have either. A muted expression flashed across the little girl’s face and quickly disappeared as she kept up the dialogue with my daughter.

“Stop it!” the older one said to the little girl, who was opening the apple juice she had just been handed. “God, don’t open that yet. Listen to me for once!“

The little girl’s face again clouded, and again she refrained from making eye contact. My heart constricted. The "sister" leaned forward and adjusted the little girl in the Target cart, and something about the mastery of her movements alerted me that this was not the sister. This angry, lost young woman was the mother.

As someone who grew up being verbally abused, my self-esteem left in such shreds that I hated myself by first grade, I recognize easily those who abuse. I can sense it before it presents itself, in the slight adjustments of a person’s mouth and jaw, in the cast of their gaze, in the undertow of words, in the presence of the wrong kind of silence. I could tell that this little girl was used to being spoken to like an undesirable idiot and that the mother was half-formed and half-present. Her heavily lined eyes were beautiful and vacant.

The little girls continued talking, and the mother continued insulting, berating and belittling. Her little girl had a sweet, intelligent face that also looked stubborn and lonely. My older daughter, 14, glanced at me, tears in her eyes. She motioned that she was going to sit farther away, where she didn’t have to listen to the abuse anymore.

I listened to my brain try to justify why I should not say anything:

It’s none of my business.

Then whose business is it?

I don’t really know if she’s just having a bad day.

More: 11 kids who epically failed at forging Mom's or Dad's signature

Bullshit.

Maybe the little girl is horrible. Maybe I just can’t understand.

Really? Bullshit again.

What if the mom yells at me?

I think you can handle it. This is the whole point of being a grown-up.

What if this is horribly embarrassing?

What if you don’t say anything and that little girl never hears another adult say that how her mom talks to her is not OK?

What if what I say makes things worse?

What if it makes them better?

“Excuse me,” I said and pulled her to the side. She was beautiful in the way only the very young can be, with an '80s short haircut and a plush mouth. She also looked about 15 and miserable. “The way you are talking to your daughter is hurting her. It’s really hurting her.”

She froze. She said nothing while her eyes moved back and forth. Then, “It’s none of your business!”

“I think it is. She’s a child, and you are hurting her. I know how it is. I had my son at 18. I know how hard it can be." Here her eyes filled with unwilling tears. She looked away, angry at those tears. “But you have to get some help. I did therapy for four years, no shame... It really helped me.”

“You don’t know her. She tried to throw her little brother out the window! He’s a baby! She’s a monster!”

“I’m sorry, that’s awful, but all the more reason she needs help. She’s not a monster. She’s a little girl, and she’s hurting.“

She interrupted, “Keep to yourself.”

More: Back-to-school presents for teachers? I'm raising the nope flag

I said softly, “Please get help.”

We left Target, and I put my arms around my girls. “We are the village,” I told them both. It was the only thing I could think to say.

I know that if I had to, I’d speak up again, because if it takes a village, then children who are being hurt have no way out when their village is too scared or shy or unconcerned to speak out. We adults have to be willing to risk our composure, privacy and comfort to take care of the defenseless among us. Doing so in front of our own children may be sad and uncomfortable, but it also models the value of a village and the responsibility we have to one another.

Sharon Osbourne shouldn't get punished for honesty about cosmetic surgery

$

Twitter is buzzing about Sharon Osbourne after seeing her on the UK premiere for the show X Factor, and there's one thing everyone is obsessed with: her face.

One man tweeted, "15 hours later and & I still can't stop thinking about Sharon Osbourne's face" — and he's clearly not alone. Many simply point out that Osbourne looks "younger than she did in the '80s," while other jokes about her face are far more cruel. "I've figured out what's wrong with Sharon's face. The corners of her lips stretch too far across her face. Like The Joker's," wrote one user. Another said, "Sharon Osborne looks like she's had concrete poured over her face."

More: 10 tips for radiant skin you barely have to work for

Osbourne has been refreshingly honest about her own plastic surgery and is often the first to joke about it. When The Talk host Julie Chen complimented Osbourne on her appearance in August, Osbourne quipped, "Well, I've got my third face on right now."

But while fans may feel invited in on the joke, this doesn't give people license to be cruel.

Why do we punish female celebs like Osbourne for opting to look as young as they possibly can for as long as possible, given the extreme ageism that exists in film and television? Meryl Streep spoke candidly about her industry's preference for younger women in her 2011 interview with Vogue. She recalled that after turning 40, she was offered three separate offers to play a witch in the same year. “Once women passed childbearing age, they could only be seen as grotesque on some level,” said Streep.

More: I had $8K in plastic surgery and it did wonders for my self-esteem

Streep hit the nail on the head. Her feeling that aging is detrimental to a woman's on-screen career is backed up by a 2016 study from Polygraph. Researchers analyzed more than 2,000 screenplays and found that, while already under-represented in film, female actresses are even more silenced on-screen when they leave their 20s. When women do have speaking roles, most of the dialogue given to women (38 percent) goes to women between 22 and 31. When women are between 42 and 65 years old, by contrast, they only get 20 percent of the lines written for women. Men in this older demographic, on the other hand, see their careers take off — 39 percent of words for male actors go to older men.

And the same goes for television. Just 1 in 5 on-air broadcasters are women over 50, according to data from a UK survey of major broadcasters.

So, while Osbourne may be joking about her "new face," she's also reacting to a painful truth. Most of the women we see in film and television aren't 63 years old like Osbourne. Instead of shaming her for trying to look young, we'd be better off considering the factors that push women in her position to hold on so tightly to an ageist version of beauty.

I don't blame Britney Spears for being nervous about her VMAs performance

We can't wait to see Britney Spears perform at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards, and can you blame us? Spears has delivered some iconic VMA moments, like singing "I'm a Slave 4 U" while holding a giant python in 2001 and kissing Madonna on live television in 2003.

More: Britney Spears needs a man, but only for baby making, not for marriage

However, the last time Spears graced the VMAs stage, in 2007, she delivered a lackluster performance of her song "Gimme More." Critics claimed that Spears was lip-syncing and that she seemed disoriented and just plain out of it.

While Spears has performed on live television since then and even performed a medley of her greatest hits at the Billboard Music Awards in May 2016, this is her first time taking the VMAs stage in nearly 10 years.

More: Yo, Lifetime: If Britney Spears doesn't want a movie made, you shouldn't make it

So, it stands to reason that Spears is nervous about performing this year. She opened up about her VMAs performance of "Make Me..." with rapper G-Eazy during an interview on 103.5 KTU’s "Cubby and Carolina in the Morning" radio show while promoting her new album, Glory.

"I think there's something in the air at the VMAs. It's, like, electric. I can't really explain it," Spears told the radio show hosts. "Every time I've performed there, it’s always been one of those really big, nerve-wracking experiences, and the people that come — those celebrities — are just so much fun and different... I still get very nervous."

More: Britney Spears' security totally failed her, and by failed, we mean she almost died

Spears isn't the only performer scheduled to take the 2016 VMAs stage. Rihanna, Ariana Grande with Nicki Minaj, The Chainsmokers with Halsey and Nick Jonas are also scheduled to perform, plus hopefully more surprise performers.

Catch Spears' performance on the VMAs tonight at 9/8c on MTV live from Madison Square Garden in New York City.

Farrah Abraham and Jenelle Evans are more than just fellow MTV reality stars. They're also friends. Abraham opened up at an event in New York City this weekend about how she's proud of Evans, who is currently pregnant, for trying to turn her life around.

"I'm actually really proud of her that she stopped doing drugs," Abraham told Us Weekly. "She definitely wants to try to find a better man to hopefully marry and have a bigger family with, if she wants to... I see her taking the initiative to totally change up things to be more welcoming to her mom. That's a hard thing, thinking back to their past of her mom trying to take her child away."

Teen Mom 2 star Evans, 24, already has two children: Jace, 7, with ex-boyfriend Andrew Lewis, and Kaiser, 2, with ex-fiancé Nathan Griffith. She is currently in a custody battle over Jace with her mom, Barbara Evans, and expecting her third child with current boyfriend David Eason.

Evans confirmed last week that she's pregnant with her third child. Unfortunately, it was first revealed that Evans was pregnant when she was in a car accident back in July and a police report was filed.

"The passenger in vehicle No. 1 stated that she is at least 10 weeks pregnant and complained of abdominal pain," the police report stated. "She was transported to [a local hospital]."

More: Don't expect to see tweets from Teen Mom 2's Jenelle Evans for a while

Abraham revealed that she suspected Evans was pregnant before it was announced publicly. She told Us Weekly, "I actually think she knew [she was pregnant before Abraham's birthday party in May] because she wasn't drinking then and they left early. I think everyone, including myself, was like, 'Are you pregnant?' Everyone there!"

We're glad to hear Evans is trying to change her life for the better. According to her Instagram announcement, she's expecting her third child in late January 2017.

Why Gabby Douglas was the only U.S. Olympic gymnast absent from the VMAs

One-fifth of the Final Five will be missing from the MTV Video Music Awards tonight. Gabby Douglas, Simone Biles, Laurie Hernandez, Madison Kocian and Aly Raisman, the American gymnasts who made history at the 2016 Olympic Games in Rio — nicknamed the Final Five — were all set to appear at the VMAs to present an award. Unfortunately, Douglas had to back out due to her recent hospitalization.

Douglas officially announced via Instagram this morning that she had to cancel her appearance, sharing a photo of herself cuddled up in bed. "Out of the hospital & resting comfortably! #FinalFive so sad I can't be with u all to present tonight," Douglas captioned the photo.

Douglas was reportedly admitted to a hospital recently, but all other details remain unknown. The gold medalist appears to be on her way to recovery but has not released any official statement. After some research, we may know what Nick & Joe Jonas' tattoos mean

Clearly, there isn't a feud going on between Nick and Joe Jonas. Not anymore, at least.

The two brothers spent their time before the VMAs white carpet today getting matching tattoos — because why not show off that brotherly love with a permanent symbol on your body?

The brothers chose to get arrows on the backs of their arms so when they stand back to back, the arrows point at one another. Is that like an "I got your back" kinda thing?

Though the two haven't yet spoken out publicly about the reason they chose arrows, the interwebs have given us some clues about possible meanings behind the symbol.

More: Weed lollipops apparently make Nick Jonas horny

According to Bustle, an arrow is typically considered a Native American symbol and could have many different meanings depending on where and how it is placed.

A solitary arrow, which is what the Jonas brothers opted for, "represents defense and protection from harm. It can also be used as a symbol of movement or direction."

Nick and Joe's arrows also don't have any feathers or decorations, suggesting the arrow is more about signifying direction.

Tattoo SEO also reports an arrow may signify love — as in Cupid's arrow. Could it be brotherly love in this case?

More: Nick Jonas' "Jealous" video is so odd, but we can't look away

Though Nick felt snubbed when his song "Close" didn't get any VMAs love this year, it clearly hasn't affected his relationship with Joe, who is nominated for Best New Artist along with the rest of his group DNCE. Nick also wasn't completely left out of the show; he's performing tonight with Ty Dolla $ign.

Are you rooting for DNCE to win tonight at the VMAs, or are you more excited to see Nick perform?

Yet ironically, it's because of our struggles with Saturn that we're even able to identify these weaknesses and blind spots in the first place. Stay engaged and don't give up! You won't get your answer right away — nothing's ever easy or straightforward when Saturn's involved — but you will eventually. And when you do, it will be worth all the aggravation.

The unique blending of solar and lunar energies combines the power of your will with the force of your nature so you move inexorably toward realizing goals you set for yourself now. The only thing that could trip you up is your tendency to overthink things. It's what Virgos do whenever they get emotionally invested in a particular outcome or result. Don't let your lack of knowledge about the whys and wherefores lead you to undercut your own interests right when you're on the brink of accomplishing so much.

LIBRA (Sept. 22 - Oct. 21)
Image: SheKnows

Your ruling planet Venus enters Libra on Aug. 29. This increases your powers of charm and persuasion and people will be like putty in your hands over the next three and a half weeks. It sounds like you're being given carte blanche to do as you please, but that's not exactly how Venus works. She will promote you in any effort to reach out across the aisle and to build bridges, but strike one discordant note — like taking advantage of somebody else's goodness — and this good feeling will dissolve at a moment's notice. Venus ensures that everyone (including you) must be on their best behavior.

It will be hard to stay upbeat on Sept. 1 when you suffer yet another setback. This could materialize as an offer being revoked last minute, a broken promise or a potential employer notifying you that they've decided to go with somebody else. You will want to throw up your hands and give up, but the best advice an astrologer can give you right now is to keep on going and avoid getting too philosophical about it. You're nearing the end of a prolonged period in which you have been wrestling with a dark angel. Dawn is about to break. Hang in there and you will emerge the victor.

SAGITTARIUS (Nov. 21 -Dec. 20)

Everything you do feels wrong when the sun squares Saturn in Sagittarius this week. Saturn is the spoiler planet in astrology. He will always point out your shortcomings, foibles and failures. This can understandably make you deaf to people's input, advice and direction because you'll only hear about the bad things and not the good. The trick to working with Saturn's energy is accepting your faults for what they are and then improving upon them. It requires an honest assessment free of exaggerated criticism and distorted praise. Do this and you'll redirect Saturn's energy so that it winds up being constructive and helpful.

CAPRICORN (Dec. 21 - Jan. 19)

It feels like you'll always be thwarted when it comes to getting what you want out of life. Sometimes this feeling lurks in the background as a low, burning anxiety and sometimes it flares up — like on Sept. 1 when the solar eclipse in Virgo squares off against your ruling planet Saturn. Ironically you are doing quite well financially as well as in your personal life. However, it's your unwavering focus on the higher heights you've yet to climb that keeps you from enjoying the fruits of your labor. Don't let your expectations for the future spoil the fun of living in the here and now.

Your moral values will be tested over these next two weeks. But this isn't about proving whether or not you're a good person; it's about showing your strength of character. How much are you willing to be there for people in whom you have misplaced your trust? The upcoming Saturn and Neptune square on Sept. 10 shows that friends' and associates' moral compasses will be wildly out of whack. This will lead them to do all kinds of questionable things. It's easy to be a friend during good times, but much more challenging during the bad when they need you to get them back on track.

You had a sinking feeling something was up and that suspicion will be confirmed on Aug. 30 when Mercury turns retrograde. This is when you find out that a certain business deal is going to turn into a very big headache. Whatever you do, don't cut ties and run. This will only cost you more than what you stand to lose. Instead review the wording of your agreement and see where you are protected. There are a couple of clauses you can use to renegotiate terms or to bring a recalcitrant-type to heel when Mercury comes out of retrograde on Sept. 21.

ARIES (March 19 - April 18)
Image: SheKnows

Being there for others sounds good in theory, but often winds up becoming tedious in practice. Probably because you never really know what you're getting into when you answer the call for help. Nevertheless, the sun/Saturn square shows you taking on the enormous burden of caring for a loved one, helping a friend turn her life around, or being the single means of support for someone who doesn't have anyone else to turn to. It won't be easy doing all of this — especially given your near zero tolerance for weakness — but you will be an astonishing success and become a better person as a result.

The solar eclipse on Sept. 1 in that part of your solar chart that pertains to love and romance will surely bring dramatic changes. If you're single, then you won't be for very long. Within six months, you'll be in a serious relationship and maybe even married. If you're already spoken for, then your relationship will undergo some extraordinary developments. One of these will be an upswing in your partner's fortunes. That sounds good now, but it could become a sore point, as it will alter the balance of power. You may not take kindly to someone who relied on you barking orders instead.

The sun squares Saturn on Sept. 1. This will introduce the final straw in what has already been an overly complicated and fraught process of trying to get together. Whether it's the straw that breaks the camel's back depends on how much you've grown this past year. If you're still smarting over what went down in your previous relationship, then things probably won't turn out well. You won't have the kind of trust and belief needed to endure what you will be asked to endure. But if you've learned to forgive and forget, then this supposed "fiasco" might bring the healing you've been seeking.

You were born under a zodiac sign that looks like it's a tough nut to crack. You know that if you come across as hard and crusty at times, it's only because you are trying to prevent your feelings from being hurt. But others don't know that. They don't know that you're trying to cover up that soft emotional underbelly of yours. This week would be the perfect time to open up. It's extraordinary how you can have such high expectations of yourself but will ask almost nothing of anyone else. No wonder you're so cranky all the time. Astrology books say it's because you're a perfectionist, but what it really stems from is that you don't want to rely on others. Others can rely on you, but not vice-versa. Believe it or not, there's a higher purpose being served by a fiasco you face on Sept. 2. It's meant to get you to lean on somebody else for a change. You're tired of the financial imbalance in your life and you want to rectify it. They say that money is the root of all evil, but actually it's the feeling that your money doesn't belong to you that's really fostering your resentment. It doesn't matter how deep a hole your partner digs for himself, you will get right on down there with him and try to sort things out. Scorpios get a bad rap when it comes to trustworthiness. Often portrayed as suspicious and duplicitous, people don't always appreciate the secrets you keep. Not only will you stick with a spouse through hell and high water, but you will do everything to ensure that nobody discovers how rough things have been. On the whole, this is OK except that now it looks like your partner is taking on a tremendous task, burden or responsibility that will impact you as well. Aquarians are pretty laid-back. You give your spouse a lot of latitude, you're lenient when it comes to loved ones and you believe that people are free to come and go as they please. Maybe it's the uncertainty of world events or maybe it's the intense eclipse energy that's coursing through your horoscope, but you will suddenly want to keep close tabs on just about everyone you know. That's OK because nobody will be feeling particularly clear or focused as long as the sun is opposite Neptune in the sky. Thankfully this influence will lift by Sept. 7. Maci Bookout doesn't need to love pregnancy to be a good woman

$

We knew even before this season of Teen Mom OG began that cast member Maci Bookout was pregnant with her third child (a boy named Maverick Reed), and now it's been revealed on the show. Bookout, who got engaged in the first episode of the season, was noticing changes in her body when fiancé Taylor McKinney suggested that she might be pregnant. We watched the couple receive results of the test, which Bookout referred to as "real positive." In Sunday's new episode, Bookout learned that she was actually much further along in her pregnancy than she thought, and she was not at all psyched about it — which, frankly, was super refreshing to see.

More: Teen Mom's Leah Messer has big plans with the new man in her life

At her ultrasound, Bookout didn't smile; she seemed overwhelmed by the reality of another child alongside Bentley and daughter Jayde, who just turned 1. Later in the episode, when she notified Ryan and his parents about her pregnancy, she told them that the good thing about having her children so young is that by the time she'll be in her mid-40's, all the kids will be out of the house.

More: You may not see Chelsea Houska on Teen Mom 2 if what her dad said is true

Bookout's reaction to her pregnancy is much different than reactions we've seen on this show before. And it's great to see her be real about her feelings instead of fronting, which women often feel pressured to do because it's still assumed that pregnancy, planned or not, is the best thing that could happen to us, no matter when or how it happens. Bookout knows what it's like to face a pregnancy she didn't plan — that's how she got on this show — but just because she has a partner and a stable income and has graduated from high school, it doesn't mean that she has to feel great about being pregnant again. Her attitude of "Oh, crap, this again" was totally all over the episode, although there was no question about whether or not she'd be carrying the pregnancy to term.

Bookout has been a visible and vocal proponent of birth control — she's been a spokeswoman for the The Candies Foundation Teen Pregnancy Prevention campaign for years — so having an unplanned pregnancy in public can't have been easy to deal with, although she's not a teen anymore. As a society, we can't wait to punish women for getting pregnant accidentally (and, of course, for accidentally getting pregnant outside of marriage, as many of Bookout's Instagram followers were quick to point out), and we pressure them to carry a pregnancy to term and parent no matter what circumstances are at work in their lives. If we're not happy about that pregnancy, we're monsters who don't love the children we already have or the one we're about to have, because feelings aren't allowed to be complicated. Bookout is not here for that, and it's great to see her acting counter to that narrative.

All eyes were on Laura Perlongo as she rolled into MTV’s 2016 Video Music Awards with her fiancé, Catfish director Nev Schulman, in one of the best pieces of maternity wear we've seen yet.

Perlongo wore an open olive green bomber jacket, color-coordinated to match her soon-to-be husband's button-up shirt, with nothing underneath except cross-the-chest body jewelry. She topped off the look with a '90s fishtail braid and choker.

This daring look is perfectly timed, considering that today is GoTopless Day. Women across the country have been marching bare-chested, standing up for their right to go topless in public. Nadine Gray, president of GoTopless, explained the movement to ABC News. “This push for women to go topless in the 21st century is as strong as women wanting to vote in the 20th century,” she said. “It may be sensual, but it’s not illegal to be sensual."

Perlongo writes very openly about her pregnancy, which she described as happening "accidentally on purpose" in a post on Attn. She spoke candidly about the stress every millennial couple feels when they have to make the decision of whether or not to actually go through with having a baby and the fear of doing it wrong.

"Nev and I certainly have no idea what we’re doing; we just know we’re doing something we want to be doing," she said. "Hopefully we don’t suck at it or turn into know-it-all zombies. Mainly we’re just really happy and excited."

Alicia Keys wrote a creed for the VMAs — read it, then let it really sink in

Alicia Keys brought down the house at the 2016 MTV Video Music Awards when she took the stage to present the award for Best Male Video. Instead of delivering the usual award show spiel, Keys got to the mic and recited an original poem in celebration of the anniversary of Martin Luther King Jr.'s "I Have a Dream" speech, delivered 53 years ago, on Aug. 28, 1963:

"If war is holy, and sex is obscene
Then we got it twisted in this lucid dream.
Baptized in boundaries, schooled in sin
Divided by difference, sexuality and skin.
So we can fear each other and hate each other
We can break these walls, we can build these walls between each other
Baby, blow by blow and brick by brick
Keep yourself locked in, yourself locked.
Or maybe we can love somebody.
Maybe we could care a little more.
Maybe we could love somebody.
Instead of polishing the bombs of holy war."

Keys half recited, half sang her poem a capella to the crowd of famous faces — all of whom appeared to be stunned into silence. Keys was the first person at the VMAs to get in any way political this year. In her poem, she made a call for people to see past the "walls" that separate us, be it "sexuality" or "skin" (read: race). More importantly, Keys used her poem as an opportunity to advocate for love, not hate or war.

More: After some research, we may know what Nick & Joe Jonas' tattoos mean

Keys added that, in the spirit of MLK and her poem, she still has hope that one day, all men and women will be treated equally. "I still believe in that dream that one day our nation is going to rise up and finally, finally, be completely about the true meaning of this creed: that all women and men are created equal," Keys said before introducing the Best Male Video nominees. It was a stunning, heartfelt award show moment — the kind that is rarely seen anymore during these heavily scripted events. And it certainly gave people a lot to think about.

Keys' raw, honest performance was probably one of the most authentic of the night, and not just because of her gorgeous, untouched live vocals. Keys has recently been embracing a no-makeup look and appears to have continued that tradition at the VMAs. "I don't want to cover up anymore. Not my face, not my mind, not my soul, not my thoughts, not my dreams, not my struggles, not my emotional growth. Nothing," Keys wrote in an essay for Lenny newsletter explaining her choice to abandon makeup.

Jacqueline Laurita’s paranoia on RHONJ will end up biting her in the ass

$

0

I'm sure all Real Housewives of New Jersey fans thought the intervention trip staged for Jacqueline Laurita and Teresa Giudice would go as badly as that time they sat on the deck discussing the tabloids. So, it was surprising to see that the mini-vacation turned out to be filled with laughter, smiles, jokes and reconciliation — for now, that is.

More: RHONJ's Teresa Giudice and Jacqueline Laurita intervention will end horribly

That's right: Jacqueline and Teresa have rekindled their friendship. They've let bygones be bygones, Jacqueline apologized for saying harsh things to Teresa and Tre accepted it with open arms. I waited for some type of fight to break out, but it never happened. How is this possible? These two avoided drama for an entire trip? Talk about progress.

As disappointing as it may be for fans (because who doesn't love a little drama?), it's great to see Teresa and Jacqueline moving forward rather than backward. It's about time they've put the past in the past. Lucy and Ethel might actually be back for good.

That said, it just seems too good to be true. Something is going to happen that just might ruin their newfound friendship, right? I hate to think negatively, but Jacqueline and Teresa usually follow the same pattern when it comes to drama and their relationship.

Plus, Jacqueline's paranoia started to show even more during the intervention trip. Her mind always goes to a bad place and she thinks the worst. For example, Melissa Gorga and Dolores Catania were having a private conversation, which then turned into Jacqueline assuming they were talking about her and Teresa. She even tried to read their lips from afar.

More: RHONJ's Teresa Giudice will probably drive Melissa & Jacqueline apart

Jacqueline Laurita
Image: Giphy

Yes, Melissa and Dolores were discussing them, but nothing bad. They said how they hope the two continue to move forward and just keep the past behind them. That's it. Jacqueline even said to their faces, "Secrets don't make friends." Then, at the end of the episode, Melissa and Dolores were supposedly whispering, and Jacqueline freaked out about it.

Thankfully, Siggy Flicker stepped in and told Jacqueline to relax and, if they or anyone else were really talking about her, to just brush it off. As Melissa smartly pointed out in her private interview, "Jacqueline is her own worst enemy" thanks to her paranoia. Eventually, Jacqueline realized she was overreacting and that she needs to stop thinking so much and just live in the moment.

Here's hoping Jacqueline puts her paranoia on the back burner. Otherwise, it's going to come back to bite her in the ass. Not only might it ruin her friendship with Teresa, but it might cause drama with the other ladies.

There's a good chance her paranoia won't resurface again in Season 7 and that Tre and Jacqueline will continue walking down a smooth path of friendship, but this is RHONJ, so probably not. Or maybe my paranoia is just getting the best of me.

Though there is still the moment of Jacqueline in the GIF above that needs to happen. So, yeah, the drama definitely isn't over.

Nicole just made her fatal Big Brother error by siding with Paulie

$

0

We're closing in on the end of Big Brother Season 18, which means everyone is freaking out (more than usual) and brokering deals with one another for the sake of remaining in the game. Today, Nicole, who's now Head of Household, entered into an extremely sketchy contract with Paulie, James and Corey (the recipient of the season's last care package, which included a thong — thanks, America) with the goal of making it to the final four. After much discussion, they decided the best name for their team would be — wait for it — the Final Four. At the end of the episode, as planned, Nicole nominated Michelle and Paulie for elimination. So, teaming up with Paulie: worst idea ever? Or Worst. Idea. Ever?

More: Celebrity Big Brother in trouble for airing reaction to Bowie's death

Nicole's reasoning behind nominating Paulie for elimination is that he won't get kicked out; it will be Michelle, who's a bigger threat to Nicole's status in the house because she's intelligent. Paulie, she told the group at the nomination ceremony, is also intelligent and a threat, but it's all part of the ruse she's cooked up with James, Paulie and Corey. After all, putting Paulie up will convince James and Natalie that Nicole's still angry at Paulie. OK, sure. But what about Paulie, given how his previous behavior on this show, particularly toward women, indicates that he's someone who's trustworthy or genuine? Nicole, what are you thinking? This dude will throw you under the bus in nine seconds, particularly if it means he'll stay on the show and make it to the Final Four. It's theoretically possible that Nicole will make it to the end, but if it's between her and Paulie for who's going to take it all, Paulie will literally do whatever it takes to make sure Nicole is out first.

More: Bridgette Dunning needs to learn to stand up for herself on Big Brother

Included in Corey's care package (which, by the way, Twitter is sooo mad about; people totally think it's evidence that this game is rigged) was a bribe, so he can offer anyone in the house $5,000 to do something that will be beneficial to his game. I haven't totally worked this out yet, but the fact that Paulie is in this pact with Corey has something to do with the existence of that bribe. Paulie is inarguably terrible, and he's managed to avoid eviction numerous times. It's not like he doesn't know how this game is played or the other people in it. As has been previously established, he's a mastermind. I'm just saying — watch out, Nicole.

We tried to decode Kanye West's VMAs speech and failed — now you try

$

The 2016 MTV Video Music Awards gave Kanye West four minutes of the show to use as he pleased, and we're still not exactly sure what he did with them.

More: Apparently all Kanye West wants for his birthday is Taylor Swift's love

I mean, words were coming out of his mouth the whole time.

He called out Amber Rose, despite their awkward past. He made comments about how people underestimate his wife, Kim Kardashian West. He gave some props to Beyoncé because, well, obviously. And, of course, he talked about what a genius he thinks he is. He even went so far to include himself in league with Steve Jobs, Howard Hughes and Walt Disney.

Right...

But all in all, what was the point? Did he really just want to hear himself talk? It was nice to see him smiling. I think this is the most we've seen him smile during a speech. But that doesn't make up for the fact that we're still scratching our heads.

More: Is Kanye West in a massive amount of debt?

You can read his speech in its entirety below. Please keep in mind, we did our best to transcribe it, but he was ridiculously hard to understand in multiple places. We've marked the places we're unsure about with brackets.

I am Kanye West. And that feels really great to say, especially this year. I came here to present my new video, but before I do that, I’ma talk.

Now, later tonight, "Famous" might lose to Beyoncé, but I can’t be mad, I’m always wishing for Beyoncé to win, so...

But for people to understand just how blessed we are... It was an expression of our now. Our fame right now. Us on the inside of the TV. You know, just to put... the audacity to put Anna Wintour right next to Donald Trump, I mean, like, I put Ray J in there, bro. This is fame, bro, like... I see you, Amber [to Amber Rose]. My wife is a G, not a lot of people wise enough to let them say that...[?]

We came over on the same boat. Now we all in the same bed. Well, maybe different boats, but you know.

But if you think about last week, it was 22 people murdered in Chicago. You know, like, people come up to me like, "Man, that’s right! Tell Taylor...” Bro, like, I love all y'all. That’s why I called her.

So, I was speaking at the Art Institute last year, and one kid came up to me and he said, "Three of my friends died, and I don’t know if I’m going to be the next." And it has to, you know, you have to think, like, you know when you’re a senior and it's like the last month and you just don’t feel like doing any more work. If you feel like you seein' people dying right next to you, you might feel like, what's the point? You know, like, life could be like... start to feel worthless, in a way.

I know times for me, I sit down and talk to, um, older, like... like, rich people. You know, aka white. And, um, they tell me, don’t compare yourself to Steve Jobs, don’t compare yourself to Walt Disney, and my friend Sakaya (I think it's Seif Sakaya?). Yo, bro, bro, [talking to someone in the audience].

They tell me, don’t compare yourself to these people, right? My friend Sakaya, there's three keys to keeping people impoverished. That's taking away their self-esteem, taking away their resources and taking away their role models. My role models are artists, merchants. There’s less than 10 I can name in history: Truman, Ford, Hughes, Disney, Jobs, West.

Bro, bro! Tonight, we’re here to have fun. I’m standing in front of my idol Puff Daddy. I’m standing in front of my wife, Kim Kardashian West. I'm standing in front of Future, Chance the Rapper, 2 Chainz, Jaden Smith. Bro, we are undeniably the influence, the thought leaders. I’m gonna play y'all a piece of my art, and I just hope y'all have a good time.

$100,000 Pyramid contestant gets something so much better than just money

The goal on The $100,000 Pyramid is always to make it to the Winner's Circle and score a six-figure prize. Few contestants are able to actually achieve this financial windfall, but sometimes, their consolation prize is just as good, if not better.

During tonight's episode, a contestant named John reminded viewers that, while winning $100,000 is amazing, money is definitely not everything. He killed it during the first round, and then, when he made it into the Winner's Circle, he told Michael Strahan that he was hoping to use any winnings he amassed to buy his girlfriend of four years a truly spectacular engagement ring. This drew an impressive reaction from the crowd, with people cheering loudly at the idea of an engagement prompted by The $100,000 Pyramid.

The stakes were definitely high going into the Winner's Circle; Strahan put it best when he claimed that John was gunning for "$50,000 and a marriage." Sadly, despite acing the Winner's Circle, John did not walk away with the $100,000 he desired. He finished his first stint in the Winner's Circle with a full 15 seconds to spare but was not able to snag a second victory. Things just didn't go as well when he was paired with Bridget Moynahan. That being said, $50,000 can get you a really nice ring!

John and his then-girlfriend's excitement was obvious, but sadly, viewers did not get to witness an on-screen proposal. This can mostly be attributed to the fact that he didn't have a ring at the time, but a few viewers wished he'd thrown caution to the wind and proposed then and there — and worried about the ring later.

Turns out, John did ultimately propose, although he chose not to do so in front of the TV cameras. He shared a picture of him and his bride-to-be on Twitter, and wow — what a lovely couple!

These days, I find myself thinking more and more about just how life-changing a win on The $100,000 Pyramid can be. Sure, these two were probably going to get engaged anyway, but think what a special story they have now. Better yet, they just might enjoy Michael Strahan's presence during their big day. I am so grateful for moments like these on The $100,000 Pyramid. They make it more than just another game show.
