Kylie Jenner should return her new car to Tyga if arrest rumors are true

0
0

You’d think Tyga would learn to stop giving women cars as gifts. Last time he gave his girlfriend, Kylie Jenner, a car people gave him crap because it was the same one he gave his ex-girlfriend. And for this birthday, he gave Jenner a car that could actually land him in jail.

Turns out Tyga is in some hot water with his former landlord and now he’s made the courts mad too.

More: Kim K doesn't want Kylie Jenner dating Tyga and not because of his arrest

According to TMZ, Tyga’s landlord has a $480,000 judgment against him after Tyga failed to pay rent on the Malibu home he was living in and for leaving it in complete shambles when he moved out.

Well today, Tyga was supposed to appear in court because he hasn't paid the judgment, and the landlord wants to know where he’s hiding his assets, but he must have had a more important commitment than court because he never showed up.

The bad news is now the landlord knows Tyga has at least $200,000 thanks to the car he bought Jenner, the courts know he’s in Los Angeles but just refuses to appear, and he has a bench warrant out for his arrest that could land him in jail. Not a good week if you're Tyga.

More: Kyle Jenner's boyfriend accused of targeting an underage girl online

If the courts find Tyga’s purchase of the car fraudulent, he’ll be forced to take the car back from Jenner and give the landlord that money, which would be embarrassing, to say the least.

It’s strange that he even bought Jenner a car. It’s not like she needs a new one or can’t buy seven of them herself. It’s such a huge gift that he knew would get coverage. If he had this judgment hanging over his head, you’d think he’d go for something small or understated — even a vacation.

We hope this whole thing gets cleared up fairly. And we’d highly recommend Jenner tell her boyfriend to stop buying her cars for the rest of their relationship. It’s just better that way.

The story of Bethenny Frankel throwing a drink at a concert is hard to believe

Real Housewives of New York fans know that Bethenny Frankel fights for her rights. But did they know that all it takes is a Coldplay concert for her to get violent? According to Page Six, she lost her cool at an exclusive private show this weekend and ended up throwing a drink on a stranger.

More: Well, Bethenny Frankel just got really real about her health issues

In a crowd that included the cream of the A-List like Karlie Kloss, Gwyneth Paltrow, Sarah Jessica Parker, and Beyoncé, it was allegedly Frankel who got mad that there was no designated VIP section.

"Bethenny was annoyed that the women were standing [in her way] and was really nasty, asking them to move,” a source tells Page Six. "She got so annoyed, she ordered [a drink and] then threw [it] at the women... They were speechless."

Frankel threw some shade at coverage of the incident on Twitter.

Former Housewife Kelly Bensimon took the time out to defend Frankel, an unusual move for their contentious relationship. She told Us Weekly, "We were all having such a good time and Bethenny seemed to be in a great mood. We said hello at one point and she nicely said hello back. I was shocked to read the story because I didn't see any of this. It just makes me sad [that] so much drama was created and nobody is promoting the Wounded Warriors. That's why we were there, to support them."

Keep your analysis on Kris Jenner's recent weight gain to yourself, please

0
0

Kris Jenner just went through a very traumatic car accident, her youngest child is having a birthday this week and she’s at the head of a multi-million dollar family. And yet, people want to talk about her weight. Jenner was seen having lunch in Los Angeles today and paparazzi managed to get one unflattering picture of her so now, of course, she’s “gaining weight” and spiraling out of control.

You can hear our collective eye roll, right?

Instead of feeding into the discussion of Jenner’s physical appearance — she looks great by the way — we thought we’d offer a few things to talk about instead.

More: Hot mama Kris Jenner shares amazing bikini pic

Jenner is back on her feet

Because she’s a boss who has business to take care of, Jenner didn’t let a car accident stop her for more than an afternoon. When some people might let it keep them off their feet for a week or two, Jenner jumped right back into work- and mom-mode. Most people would be lucky to have her kind of work ethic.

Jenner’s business savvy

Let’s face it. Jenner is maybe the best strategic businesswoman we’ve seen in the last decade. We could all spend our time trying to convince her to teach a business class so that we can all learn how to go from zero to billions in 10 years. All while wearing some fierce heels.

More: Stop shaming Kris Jenner for being a sexually active older woman

The Olympics

There’s a huge competition between nations happening that showcases humans doing really incredible things from around the world. Instead of commenting on whether or not Jenner has gained weight, we can talk about how so many different body types are capable of being the best in the world at their sport. Really, that’s probably the only time you should comment on someone else’s body — when you’re congratulating them for using it to be the best in the world, literally.

The election

America is on the verge of history — we might actually elect the very first woman president. It was only about 100 years ago that all women earned the right to vote, and now, we might actually run the country. That means we’re so much better than commenting on another woman’s weight, right?

Bad Moms

It’s a movie that’s out right now in which Mila Kunis stands up for all the moms trying to be perfect when it really doesn’t matter. It’s a great message, but it’s also hilarious. Crying-from-laughing funny. Laughing is always better than tearing down another woman for the way she looks. Always.

The ‘NSYNC Reunion

The boys from ‘NSYNC got together to celebrate JC Chasez’s 40th birthday. He’s 40! Justin Timberlake shared a picture of the group together at the party and it gave us major throwback feels. It also could have made us feel like we’re older than we want to admit. But even that’s a better topic than Jenner’s weight.

Nsync Reunion tweet

Anything else

Literally. Talk about anything else. Don’t talk about a woman’s weight. We’re all better than that and Jenner deserves better treatment than that.

Pete's Dragon: Will kids love it as much as you loved the original?

0
0

The classic children's film Pete's Dragon gets a reboot from Disney. But does it bring the same on-screen magic you remember from the original? Let's just say a lot's changed since 1977.

Pete's Dragon from 1977
Image: Disney

The original Pete's Dragon, starring Mickey Rooney and Helen Reddy, was one of my all-time favorite movies as a kid. The story of Pete, a little orphan boy whose best friend was a pink and green dragon named Elliot, filled my heart with hope and delight. To me, the fact that Elliot played pranks on the citizens of Passamaquoddy was both joyfully defiant and hilarious. Elliot acted out all the fantasies we “good kids” never dreamed of actually attempting. I remember thinking, "If only I could make myself invisible too!"

More: The question we really need to stop asking little kids about sports

But for me, the Disney film was about a lot more than just creative ways to get away with bad behavior. At the story's emotional core were lessons in the power of friendship and the need to belong. The scene at the end of the film, where Pete asks Elliot if he'll ever see him again, broke my tiny heart. This moment brought tears to my eyes every single time I played the grainy VHS tape. Their relationship was the greatest expression of love my little-girl-self had ever seen — on screen or in real life.

To prepare for seeing the 2016 remake of Pete’s Dragon, I rewatched the original — not on a videotape this time, but on YouTube. Hoping for a fun trip down memory lane, I was actually a bit alarmed during my viewing.

Instead of a sweet kids' movie in which a boy sings little ditties about his dragon, my adult-self was viewing a weird mashup of 1970s gritty realism and campy, psychedelic glee — not to mention a tiny whiff of child abuse.

Pete's Dragon from 1977
Image: Disney

Ah, the '70s.

While I still found the story as sweet as can be, the mix of live action with a cartoon dragon looked so dated to me, especially after seeing so many dazzling Pixar films like Brave and Inside Out.

While animation technology has changed incredibly over the last 40 years, my warm, childhood memories of the film have not. Despite growing accustomed to the wonders of CGI, I was happy to discover that I still loved retro Elliot, goofy animation and all.

More: 24 offensive kids' T-shirts that have made headlines

Because I was so loyal to the original, I was worried about how I'd feel about Elliot's modern makeover in the new Pete's Dragon. The adorable, big-bellied reptile I grew up with now looks a heck of a lot different.

The old and new Pete's Dragon

Image: Disney

But audiences, especially kids, are much more sophisticated than they used to be. While I tend to prefer movies in 2-D and can feel nostalgic about some of the better old-school animation, our kids have grown up on Pixar films and hyperrealistic video games. A dopey-looking dragon just wouldn’t work in 2016.

Disney wisely hired Eric Saindon, the visual effects supervisor responsible for the dragons in The Hobbit films and The Lord of the Rings trilogy, to invent a new Elliot. Visually Elliot is a bit intimidating and may be a little scary to young kids at first, but soon it's clear he's really like a giant green puppy.

Pete's Dragon
Image: Disney

The filmmakers purposely gave the dragon fur, not scales, to make him appear more friendly and relatable — at least to Pete (Oakes Fegley). Elliot's ability to breathe fire does come in handy later on in the story, but the unleashing of his pryomaniacal powers does not come without provocation.

The Pete's Dragon of 2016 doesn't have singing or dancing, but it does send a new, important message: Our relationship with nature matters.

The new film ditches Passamaquoddy for the fictional town of Millhaven in the Pacific Northwest. The forest, both Pete's and Elliot's home, is being destroyed on a large scale. Saving a mythological dragon now becomes a metaphor for saving the natural environment — both are fierce, beautiful and awe-inspiring, but also incredibly fragile.

More: A back-to-school sweepstakes so you'll actually look forward to summer's end

Comparing the two movies is really like comparing apples and oranges, because each is a product of a very specific era in American culture. What both movies do share is a longing for family and home, the need to respect all creatures and the transformational power of love.

Without giving anything way, I will say the last image of the film brought tears to my eyes, just as the end of the original did. The two endings are different, but both are very special and emotional.

Bottom line

This is a terrific family film that will inspire a whole new generation to believe in dragons.

The film is one hour and 35 minutes.

Iffy for some toddlers, but perfect for elementary school-age kids, especially ones who love fantasy. There is a car crash in the opening scene that's a little scary.

There are no extra scenes after the credits.

Pete's Dragon flies into theaters Friday, Aug. 12.

Lace Morris found love on Bachelor in Paradise and wants everyone to know it

0
0

Bachelor In Paradise Season 3 is in full swing, so obviously we aren't supposed to know yet how it all turns out.

More: I may not like Josh Murray, but Evan Bass is not Bachelor in Paradise's hero

But one couple from the show isn't making much of an effort to hide their relationship status after leaving Mexico: Lace Morris and Grant Kemp.

Lace, the resident alcoholic from Ben's season who infamously chewed him out after a rose ceremony for not making enough eye contact with her, and Grant, the Los Angeles firefighter from JoJo's season whom The Chad nicknamed "hot squidward," started this season of Bachelor In Paradise by vibing pretty hard — that is, until Lace and Chad got drunk and started making out/insulting each other/punching each other in the hot tub. That was all well and good until Chad got so belligerently drunk he told contestants and staff to "suck my bachelor dick," passed out on the beach and got escorted out by Chris Harrison the next morning.

More: Bachelor in Paradise is basically just the Nick Viall vs. Josh Murray show

Anyway, fast-forward to Lace, taking tequila shots at the bar and begging other contestants to talk to Grant to get him to talk to her. It was all really middle school, but it apparently worked, because Grant and Lace have faded into the background of the show as one of the solid couples — well, except for that time they did a crappy job covering up the bedroom cam and got caught hooking up.

And while rumors are flying that they make it all the way to the end and leave Mexico engaged, they're breaking all of ABC's Bachelor rules and flaunting their relationship in the real world while Paradise is still airing. They've been spotted together on multiple occasions, the most blatant of which being when Grant visited Lace in Denver and onlookers saw them making out at a public pool.

The latest evidence that their relationship is still going strong is even more hilarious — Lace was seen at LAX sporting some new ink: the word "Grace" on her wrist. Fans are clamoring on social media that she got the tattoo because it's a combination of hers and Grant's names. But it's also, like, a word? So who even knows?

More: Josh Murray might be the shadiest guy in Bachelor in Paradise history

Do you think Lace's new tattoo is a testament to her relationship with Grant?

Keeping your kid's Social Security number safe matters more than you think

0
0

Teens are getting pretty good these days about protecting their safety and identity on the internet — after all, this is the generation that was born with a cellphone in hand. But some of the more “old-fashioned stuff,” like using the nine-digit Social Security number needed to apply for a job, fill out a tax return or open a bank account, may be totally foreign to a college-bound kid entering the real world for the first time.

If a Social Security number were to fall into the wrong hands, someone could easily do a world of damage. To protect your teen’s identity and their funds, it may be time to have "the talk" about the times when you should never, ever share your SSN. According to Andrew Brandt, lead threat research analyst at Webroot, adults and children alike need to change their way of thinking when it comes to their Social Security numbers.

"There are some scenarios when a Social Security number is required, but otherwise, I would say there is absolutely no reason to give it to anyone," Brandt told SheKnows. "You should train yourself to reflexively not enter your Social Security number onto any form, period."

More: An Uber-like app for kids may not be as crazy as you first think

If the person collecting an application says it won't go through without your Social Security number, Brandt encourages teens to ask them to explain why it's required. Technically, private companies are allowed to deny service based on a refusal to provide a Social Security number. To work around that, a good strategy is to offer something in place of an SSN, like a driver's license number or even a cash deposit.

With that in mind, Efrat Cohen, a licensed private investigator and executive director of Global Intelligence Consultants, says that once a teen has their Social Security number memorized, there’s never a good reason to keep it on their person. “Your Social Security number is your 'individual fingerprint' that legitimizes you and all your dealings for all time. However, and unlike actual fingerprints, carelessness can allow others so inclined and maligned to use your fingerprint as their own and, in the process, destroy everything identified with and related to the legitimate possessor of that number,” Cohen told SheKnows. “As Social Security numbers are memorized by the holders, there should never be a need to 'carry' a document with that number printed on it, and especially not so in any purse or wallet!”

But this is only the tip of the iceberg. We’ve asked several more digital safety experts to weigh in on those critical times when a young adult should never share their SSN.

1. Applications for discount cards

"Just because a supermarket club card application is asking for your Social Security number doesn't mean it's appropriate for you to give it to them, nor is it necessary or even appropriate for the supermarket club to have that information," Brandt said.

Beyond avoiding the extraneous card applications that may request an SSN, Benjamin Glaser, editor at DealNews, urges teens to keep up with their credit reports to put a stop to identity theft in its early stages. “One of the worst things that can happen through identity theft is the opening of a brand-new credit line in your name. Unlike a simple case of a stolen credit card, you won't see a new credit line on your bank statement and might not know what is happening until your credit score is wrecked. So start checking your credit report regularly. You're entitled to three free ones — one from each major reporting company — every year. If you see any suspicious behavior, report it immediately,” Glaser said.

2. Over the phone

No matter how convincing the caller may be, you should never give your SSN over the phone. So what should you do? If someone claiming to be from your bank, phone company or health insurance company asks for your Social Security number, Brandt advises you get their name and phone extension, then call them back using the number printed on your latest statement or from their website. This way you can validate that they're legitimate and not a scammer.

Glaser adds, “And remember that your bank and other legitimate institutions will never ask you for your SSN in an unsolicited phone call or email.”

3. Online

The same goes for online. Tami Nealy, director of corporate communications at LifeLock, says banks and health insurance companies will never send an email asking you to reply with your Social Security number. If you receive a suspicious email appearing to be from your bank or insurance provider, validate it by contacting them directly using a phone number from their official website or from your last statement.

Because of the growing number of these fraudulent emails, the Social Security Administration recently released an anti-phishing warning, cautioning against phishing email scams pretending to be the SSA. Most official emails from the SSA should end in “.gov.” SSA email links and logos should also redirect to the official website. “Students should look for signs of a scam, like bad grammar and spelling in the ‘official notice’ and other suspicious things. Though it’s of utmost importance to have anti-virus and anti-malware, these won’t stop a thief from using the student’s number after the student is tricked into giving it on a phony website,” Robert Siciliano, identity theft expert and CEO of IDTheftSecurity.com, said.

If your teen encounters a website or phishing email that asks for an SSN, it’s time to click on out of there posthaste. “As with legitimate websites and internet resources, none will require from you the revealing of your individual password or security phrases and so forth. By the same token, no site (outside of official government-related and secure sites) should ever ask you for your Social Security number, and without full qualification, that number should never be revealed,” Cohen said.

More: I don't care if my kids feel left out when someone else gets a gift

4. Public Wi-Fi

There may be identity theft traps all over the internet, but Social Security information transmitted over public Wi-Fi can be especially dangerous, Glaser says. “Only send personal info over secure connections to safe, legitimate destinations (like secured websites). Remember that the safest connection is on a private internet connection (like at home). If you must send sensitive information, like your SSN or credit card, while in public, keep in mind that your phone's data network is relatively more secure than a public Wi-Fi network.”

Siciliano recommends that teens avoid using public Wi-Fi for any transactions involving money or sensitive information, since it’s especially easy for hackers to snoop on these data transmissions. “A virtual private network will prevent snooping by encrypting transactions,” he says. “Not all campuses provide secure Wi-Fi, and the presence of anti-virus, anti-phishing, anti-spyware and firewalls don’t guarantee all levels of protection. To play it safe, students should never visit bank account sites, insurance carrier sites and other such sites while using public Wi-Fi.”

5. Doctor's office

Unless a teen is using Medicare or Medicaid, your doctor shouldn't require you to provide your SSN. Many doctors think of your Social Security number as their protection against missed payments. So if a doctor insists on receiving those nine digits, a teen can ask to pay cash upfront instead. The fewer eyes that see an SSN, the better. “There is no foolproof system, but there is absolutely no excuse whatsoever for not practicing total awareness and exercising every precaution to minimize that potential from happening to the new college student,” Cohen says.

For people of any age, and especially for teens leaving the nest, it can’t be overstated enough: Keeping your Social Security card secure is a big deal. “Lock your Social Security number with other vital yet nonessential identification documents, like your passport and birth certificate,” Cohen advises. “In fact, there would never be an occasion when you would need to produce a document containing your Social Security number beyond legitimate employment applications.” And when applying for a job, Cohen says, it’s likely that a teen will have already researched and selected a trustworthy employer. Only in these circumstances is it OK to supply a physical Social Security card in good conscience.

The reality TV curse may have already struck Rob Kardashian & Blac Chyna

Is Rob Kardashian and Blac Chyna's reality show doomed before it even airs?

More: Rob Kardashian took on way more than he could handle with Blac Chyna

Us Weekly is reporting that Kardashian hasn't been showing up for filming and that the show is causing serious issues in the pair's relationship. It should come as no surprise, considering Kardashian left his family's reality show Keeping Up With the Kardashians three years ago, claiming he wanted to live a life outside of the spotlight. So that begs the question: Was it Chyna who pushed him into signing onto their reality show, and will their relationship be able to survive it?

A source dished to Us Weekly that Kardashian "has skipped and not shown up for" a number of shoots for Rob & Chyna, a six-part docuseries set to air on E! and document the couple's engagement and Chyna's pregnancy. After the docuseries, a special episode is set to cover their wedding.

More: Rob Kardashian's relationship drama has an awful effect on his health

"He’s struggling to readjust to the grueling work schedule," the source added of Kardashian. "It was like a honeymoon every day with Chyna before filming started. But working with your pregnant partner and living together has been stressful. Rob just shuts down."

While Kardashian hasn't been showing up to film, the source said Chyna, who is five months pregnant with their daughter, has just been filming without him. The source also said she's been wondering if Kardashian regrets signing onto the show.

It's been clear that there have been hiccups in their relationship. In July, Kardashian deleted all traces of Chyna from his Instagram and unfollowed her, sparking breakup rumors. Film crews have been capturing the strife, which viewers will be able to see.

"You will see a lot of stress and fighting on the show," the insider said. "This show is capturing their real lives. There are great highs and low lows. It goes back and forth."

On Monday, Iggy Azalea took to social media to post a photo of herself rocking a pink bikini as she sat with her feet in the water of a swimming pool, an image that should have had people wishing they could get outdoors and enjoy the sunshine themselves. "Fake butts be like..." wrote naryn07.

"She looks deformd [sic] in this photo," kariwa commented. While skellz16 also shamed Azalea for her proportions, writing, "That doesn't even look proportionate lol."

"I'd rather have a tinier booty and actually look proportionate lol but to each their own," janellegillxo shared.

Others questioned whether Azalea had Photoshopped her picture. Baelux321 wrote, "if you look at the water then look at her arms you can see something is very off looks like it has been retouched or photo shopped..."

Vanityslut98 shared similar sentiments, writing, "This looks so photoshopped lol" and fcukoff_____ agreed, writing, "Is anyone noticing her arm though... Photoshop fail."

Iggy Azalea Instagram

Iggy Azalea Instagram

This is not the first time that Azalea, who has admitted to having a boob job as well as a nose job, has come under fire for altering her body, but the negative backlash really needs to stop for two reasons, the most simple being that it's Azalea's body and it's her choice alone what she chooses to do with it, and if she has chosen to get her features enhanced, then that in no way decreases her talent.

More: Iggy Azalea's boob job shouldn't disqualify her as a body image role model

And the second reason? Cosmetic surgery shouldn't be taboo.

In fact, Azalea makes a pretty compelling argument for why women should be able to have cosmetic procedures without shame or judgement. As a society, we are too quick to judge people based solely on appearance. The media constantly bombards us with images of perfect, airbrushed women — a standard of beauty that, for most of us, is completely unattainable.

While that's not to say that women are not all gorgeous in their natural form, being able to make a guilt-free decision to take charge of your own appearance, much like Azalea has done, can be empowering. Blogger Kate Fridkis expanded on this thought in her blog, Eat the Damn Cake.

Speaking of undergoing cosmetic surgery, Fridkis explained how it was both a "relief" and a "step on the path to self-acceptance."

"The truth is, cosmetic surgery made me feel empowered. I was choosing to change something about myself that had distracted me too long," she writes. "I wanted to think about other things. I wanted to move on, and no amount of pep-talking and gender theory reading seemed to do the trick. I was tired. I was fed up."

But more than that, it starts a conversation about how we should be more accepting of peoples' decisions — that's not to say you have to agree with them, it's just to say you have no right to judge them — which is something Azalea previously touched on during an interview with Elle Canada.

More: Iggy Azalea opens up about her difficult, out-of-control year

"I think, in 2016, people should be more accepting of the fact that both famous and non-famous women are having cosmetic procedures," she told the publication. "That's just the reality. And I think more people need to admit that shit so it doesn't have to be so taboo — because we're all doing it anyway."

So, can we all just leave Iggy Azalea alone, now? Because the size and shape of her behind really has nothing to do with anyone other than Azalea. And if she has chosen to alter it, well, then how does it affect you?

Justin Trudeau is winning over women with his stand on public breastfeeding

Prime Minister Justin Trudeau and his wife Sophie Grégoire Trudeau decided to take a stand for breastfeeding in the most beautiful way: by posting a picture on Twitter which shows Sophie doing just that.

More: Woman who told mum to stop breastfeeding got more than she bargained for

Last week was World Breastfeeding Week —  an attempt to raise awareness and recognise "that breastfeeding is a key to sustainable development, we will value our wellbeing from the start of life, respect each other and care for the world we share" — and the couple decided to publicly support the cause by sharing a sweet picture of Sophie breastfeeding their youngest son, Hadrien.

The photo was captioned with a call to support breastfeeding moms in public (in the hopes of ending the stigma that still surrounds the practise of public breastfeeding). It read, "This World Breastfeeding Week, let's support mothers to breastfeed anytime, anywhere. - SGT #WBW2016."

Justin Trudeau Twitter

Justin Trudeau Twitter

This tweet is obviously important because the Trudeaus are both very high-profile, and it will hopefully serve as a means to generate awareness and support for breastfeeding mums in the future because unfortunately the practise still remains somewhat controversial. But feeding your child whenever and wherever it's hungry is really one of the most normal, natural things that a mother can do, and to suggest that women cannot and should not feed their children in public is discriminatory.

More: Mila Kunis has the best attitude about breastfeeding in public

Breastfeeding and bottle-feeding should enjoy the same rights, and both should be seen as normal. This isn't the first time that Sophie has shared her thoughts on breastfeeding, either, as she revealed during an interview with Yahoo Global News' Katie Couric earlier this year that she was still breastfeeding her 2-year-old son. She said, "I think it's a woman's choice. I breastfed my three babies. I also gave them formula. I think it's a beautiful bond, and I encourage it, but I don't judge."

But is this picture of Canada's first lady something that the public actually want to see? It seems the Twitter reactions to it are somewhat divided.

There are many messages of support for the Trudeaus' message. There are even a few Americans wishing they could cross the border.

It's sad that in 2016 people are still so judgemental of women who choose to breastfeed in public. But at least the fact that there's even such a thing as World Breastfeeding Week (and political figures willing to rally behind it) proves that we, as a society, are (slowly) headed in the right direction.

This school's sexist dress code takes aim at fifth-grade girls

0
0

Oh, back-to-school season is upon us. Time to shift to a new routine. Time to buy new pencils and backpacks. And if you live in Freeburg, Illinois, time to take your fifth-grade daughters shopping for non-distracting, non-revealing and ladylike school clothes.

Yep. We’re still in 2016. We checked.

More: The question we really need to stop asking little kids about sports

However, this flier that was sent home with students in grade five through eight sort of reeks of 1963:

freeburg dress code

freeburg dress code

Saint Louis journalist Rebecca Sheehan posted this flier on her public Facebook page, where she often shares behind-the-scenes peeks at stories in progress. Sheehan’s page followers have plenty to say about the dress code in Freeburg, which is just on the Illinois side of the Mississippi River, and they’re not shy about sharing their opinions.

Opinions are all over the place. Some give the school virtual high-fives for establishing a dress code that’s conducive to an educational environment — aka girls not wearing ultra-revealing clothes. Some think this dress code is too restrictive, too sexist and too outdated. One alumna remarked that this was the same dress code that had been in existence when she attended school — in 1975.

1975. Hmm.

More: The last thing I expected when I started waking earlier than my kid every day

This comment was a favorite:

“So glad they allow girls to wear pants. With such a sexist and outdated standards like that, we should be thankful they let our daughters go to school at all. A potato is distracting to teenagers. This isn't about if the kids can concentrate, it's the adults sexualizing them.

Believe it or not, this is (or at least appears to be) a flier that lays out the school dress code for both boys and girls. No, really. Look closer. You’ll see two boys illustrating that it’s not OK to wear wife beaters, boxer shorts or baggy pants to school. The (crudely drawn) images depict eight girls and two boys, and most of the “do nots” are aimed at females. It may as well say:

“Your bodies are distracting, girls. Buy clothing that’s two sizes too big, because if you don’t cover up, you’ll interfere with the boys’ ability to learn and the male faculty members' ability to do their jobs.”

Really? Rape culture much?

Schools should have a dress code, by all means, but make it a fair one and an easy-to-interpret one. Seriously, how difficult is it to establish finite and measurable standards that apply to both boys and girls? Come to the light and into the 21st century, where using ambiguous terms like "distracting," "revealing" and (barf) "ladylike" don’t have any place in how we’re teaching our children to describe themselves.

If you’re going to use diagrams, how hard would it be to produce something that showed equal representation to both boys and girls and didn’t give the visual cue that we’re singling out and shaming the female body? And for crying out loud, get some decent images that don’t, as one commenter put it, “look like they were drawn by a fifth-grader with a perpetual boner.”

Kathie Lee Gifford spent today remembering her late husband, Frank Gifford, who passed away last year. This would have been their 30th year of marriage. She shared a touching tribute to her husband on Today.com, explaining how she's gotten through the year without him.

Gifford took one day at a time, she wrote. "God doesn't promise you a year. He promises you a day at a time. He broke life into 24-hour-periods because that's all we can handle. The next day, you reach for your fresh cup of mercy that you need every bit as much as the day before."

She shared some advice for those also grieving: the importance of getting the help you need. For Gifford, it was important to turn to faith. "For other people grieving the loss of a loved one, I would tell them it's impossible to do it on your own," she said. "You need to immerse yourself in the word of God. What I would do is get up in the morning and spend time in prayer. Start really learning as much Scripture as possible so you can quote it without looking it up, so it's in your DNA. You can call on it when you're feeling challenged in your faith."

Kylie Jenner is getting older, but is she getting wiser? She turned 19 today and shared a photo on Instagram of herself in yet another look that we've seen, well, forever — on black women. Fans are crying "cultural appropriation," a refrain that Jenner has likely gotten used to, as she and her sisters have worn "boxer braids" — aka cornrows — for months, even getting credit for "popularizing" the "trend".

In between the standard "lb" and "row for row" comments on her photo are genuine criticisms. From a user named @kmuhammad19: "Black women have been doing it for hundreds of years and this is new??? Please I guess for your audience this is a trend but for Black People this is Our Culture." Another @jeshastevens writes, "I don't think its super healthy and isn't this cultural appropriation?"

I hate how badly allergy season affects my kids

0
0

Allergy season is no joke, especially if you have kids. Kids bring a whole new level of "Eww, gross" to allergy season. I don't care how many times you tell them to sneeze in their arms, or to use a tissue for that nose that won't stop running or when their eyes water, kids still manage to make allergy season that much more frustrating by being, well, kids! Despite that, my main concern for my child who suffers from seasonal allergies is the limitations it can put on her ability to play. If my daughter is sneezing and rubbing her eyes from her allergies, she is not playing and being as carefree as I want my children to be.

We live on an acre of land out in the country surrounded by trees, a cow pasture and lots and lots of animals. Stray cats, neighbors' dogs, our own dogs and not to mention the allergens in the air. The allergies really can take a toll come the start of fall, when leaves are turning. But with the cooler weather comes the desire to be outside even more. To play and to run and to enjoy childhood for as long as possible. Who wants to watch their children avoid being outside because their allergies prompt a runny nose or watery eyes?

As an adult who also has seasonal allergies, I know the frustration it creates in everyday life. Turns out, this is a predicament an estimated one in five Americans face each year with outdoor and indoor allergies. (source)

My kids are at their best when they are cartwheeling in the yard, shooting baskets into the goal, kicking the ball around with the dogs or riding bikes with friends. They have such limited times to be carefree kids with the schedule of school and other activities. So making that play time greater by eliminating any distractions is an important effort for me as a mom. I am so glad that there are proven, responsible products out there that are easy to use and do what they say to help me help my kids play greater!

I'm begging Criminal Minds gives a happy ending to Aisha Tyler in Season 12

0
0

Now that Paget Brewster has confirmed her (abbreviated) return to Criminal Minds for Season 12, and the show will be bringing Adam Rodriguez on board to mend the wounds of our hearts made by the departure of Shemar Moore, what else could be in store for us, the loyal, yet world-weary fans of this show?

Aisha Tyler, who joined the cast in Season 11 as Dr. Tara Lewis, will become a full-time cast member in Season 12.

More: Criminal Minds was renewed! Will Season 12 bring some serious carnage?

What could this mean other than she'll be in the credits? It's hard to predict, since last season, Dr. Lewis wasn't in every episode. She had a limited role with the team, while she did some other fancy job involving forensic psychology and serial killers. (Also, Aisha Tyler had like 14 jobs in real life.)

However, it's not difficult to figure out how the writers will get Tyler's character back at the BAU full time, since this is the season the team is going to have to catch all those serial killers who escaped last season.

But what about Lewis' personal life? We don't know much about it other than that she left her fiancé early in Season 11, after said fiancé accused her of caring too much about her job and not enough about him, an all-too-familiar conversation on this show because the BAU destroys both relationships and happiness.

More: Criminal Minds: 20 bucks says Antonia turns on the BAU in the finale

It is likely that I am way too invested in the personal lives of these people, and also too cynical about how happy they're allowed to be while still being part of the team. While the show is really good at character development, it's not great at letting the profilers have quality relationships outside the BAU. There's JJ, who has a romantic partner and two kids and seems to be doing fine most of the time, except for that part where she was kidnapped/tortured, had a miscarriage and remains emotionally compromised. Rossi's entire character is based on the fact that he can't maintain a relationship. Reid got to be happy for four whole episodes in Season 8 before that crashed and burned horribly.

The writers certainly have their work cut out for them this season, but if they're planning on giving Lewis a storyline that's about her romantic life, I hope it's not going to be a disaster. It's totally possible that isn't where they'll go with Lewis since she does have quite the rapport with the serial killers, which is obviously useful.

Having Tyler signed on as a full-time cast member is great news for the show on a lot of levels, not the least of which is the fact that it means there are four women on the team. After the show fired Brewster (Emily Prentiss) and AJ Cook (JJ) back in Season 6, it came under fire for the way it was treating women, so it's good to see that the female cast is robust going into Season 12.

More: Prentiss' Criminal Minds return makes me nostalgic for a superior cast

Looks like Derick Dillard's super-stylish man bun is here to stay, my friends

Jill Duggar and Derick Dillard have returned from their missionary trip to Central America. They’ve returned to Arkansas excited to hang out with their family and friends, and they brought a very special souvenir back with them — Derick’s man bun.

Derick Dillard man bun

Derick Dillard man bun

Jill and Derick have each shared photos to their Instagram that show Derick’s stylish hairdo. It’s not quite a top bun that we’ve all gotten used to from the hipsters who love the style, but it’s a conservative, well-kept version, which fits him perfectly.

More: Jill Duggar's husband's letter to their baby will bring tears to your eyes

When you think of Derick, you don’t immediately think hipster. For one, he isn’t the kind to have a vape or an exhausting opinion of every craft beer in Brooklyn. But he’s also not the kind to express any real interest in fashion or style. That said, it looks great on him. It’s much more interesting than the staple Southern swoop hairstyle he had when we first met him.

What we’re still waiting to hear is whether or not Jill likes his new look. It’s definitely different from how most of the other people in her life look, but maybe that’s a good thing. If he likes it and it’s bringing him confidence, I’m sure she loves it.

More: Jill Duggar uploads sweet post, but critics are focusing on Derick's looks

Or she could be busy focusing on her family and continuing her mission back in Arkansas.

Even though the couple is back on American soil, they’re not done with their work in Central America. The couple wrote on their blog, “We believe our labors until now will serve as a strong foundation for many years of wonderful ministry in the days to come. Even while we are in the United States we will continue to work on behalf of the ministry and the work in Central America will continue.”

At least they’re going to look great while they do their work. We vote Derick keeps the man bun. Maybe until their next baby comes?

The Sister Wives are looking to make some real change for polygamous families

0
0

As you may already know, polygamy is not a method of marriage that is used only in the household of Kody Brown and his wives on TLC's popular reality series Sister Wives. In fact, the idea of a man marrying more than one woman at a time is a common practice for a select number of families — oftentimes those who associate themselves with the Mormon religion — and is practiced both within and outside of the United States. And now Kody Brown and his four wives (Christine, Meri, Robyn and Janelle) are taking what originally began as a 2012 lawsuit against the state of Utah to a more national level: Their petition against the criminalization of polygamy is headed to the U.S. Supreme Court. Yep, a reality television show could be changing the ways marriage is viewed in the United States as we know it.

However, before you begin passing judgment, it should be noted that nationwide legalization of polygamy isn't exactly what they're asking for. If anything, the Sister Wives stars are looking for justice in terms of their own religious freedom and the freedom of speech and to privacy in regard to the ways they are choosing to live their lives instead of constantly facing threats of prosecution or any other possible legal charges that may hang over what they refer to as their "spiritual union," making this the first time in over 100 years that the U.S. Supreme Court is looking at a case related to polygamy. Things just got really real.

More: Kody Brown and his sister wives are sick of being considered 'criminals'

But what brought them to this point? Well, after their 2012 case against Utah, Brown and his wives actually did take a step in the right direction for the polygamist cause. The federal court overturned Utah's bigamy law in 2013, therefore legalizing the idea of polygamy to a point where one could not be arrested because of it. However, when the cause they sued Utah for in the first place contained no backing, their case was thrown out in April 2016. And they will now be taking what began as a statewide ban onto the national stage as soon as a Sept. 10 hearing.

Meanwhile, the possible passing of the petition could also directly affect the already bonded family, as Brown has a legal contract with only one of his wives, Robyn, therefore resulting in what could be three more televised wedding ceremonies to legally bond the polygamist family as one if their petition goes as planned. And who knows? Maybe this could even be means for Brown to introduce another wife into their family. We'll just have to wait and see.

12 tips for making the best burgers you'll ever eat

0
0

When a wafer-thin fast-food burger just won't do, you know it's time to fire up the grill and get to cooking. While grilling the perfect burger may not technically be rocket science, we think it comes close. You have to know what you're doing to grill up the kind of juicy, succulent, mouthwatering burger that you'll be dreaming about for the next week.

For those who find themselves challenged in the burger-flipping department, here's where to begin.

1. Choose the right meat

You may think the fancier the better, but when it comes to burgers ground chuck is best — and avoid super-lean beef. You want a fat content around 15-20 percent, so your burger will stay tender and juicy after its trip to the grill.

2. Make your own

Pre-formed, frozen patties save time, but they're just not worth it. The meat is often tough from being overworked and compacted, and you won't be able to control the seasoning that goes into the meat. Stick to forming your own patties for best results, and wet your hands to keep the meat from sticking to you.

3. Season wisely

You may be tempted to add ketchup, eggs or even breadcrumbs to your burger in order to get it to stay together. But that's meatloaf, folks, not a burger. Keep your mixed-in seasonings simple, and don't add salt until right before the burger goes on the grill. Otherwise, it can leach out the juices from the meat, leaving you with a dry burger.

More: Bourbon burger with bourbon barbecue sauce

4. Keep it loose

A perfectly formed puck of beef may look great, but once it's cooked it can wind up tough and rubbery. That's because the heat that results from over-exuberant mixing causes the fat in the beef to emulsify, leaving you with a dense patty. Instead, loosely pack the meat into patties using a gentle touch. You'll be rewarded with a burger that's perfectly juicy and tender.

5. Refrigerate first

Once you've got your "special seasoning" down, it's once again time to give it a rest. Let seasoned patties sit in the refrigerator for several hours to hold their form and allow all flavors to intermingle. For organizational purposes, patties can be stacked neatly on a plate, separated with wax paper and covered loosely with plastic wrap in the fridge.

More: The juiciest, most mouthwatering burger recipes for summer

6. Stop the dreaded dome

We've all suffered through a burger shaped like a dome, raw in the middle and overcooked on the edges. Avoid this pitfall by creating a small indent in each patty before it goes on the grill. This will ensure that as the meat expands from the heat, the center will stay even with the edges.

Next Up: Don't let it stick

{pageBreak}

Grilled burger

7. Don't let it stick

After all this work, the last thing you want is for your burger to stick. To keep things slick, start with clean grill grates; any old debris will fuse with the proteins in your meat and cause it to stick. Next, with your tongs, use a paper towel dipped in a small amount of oil to grease up the grill. Lastly, wait for the grill to get really hot before you put on your burgers. It'll help create a nice sear where the meat touches the grill, which will make the patty easier to remove.

8. Please, no squishing!

It's certainly satisfying to hear the sizzle when you press on your burgers, but what you're actually hearing is all of their delicious juices hitting the grill and evaporating. You'll be left with a dry meat puck no one wants to eat. Instead, leave your burgers alone as much as possible once they hit the grill.

9. Check the temp

From burger thickness, the type of meat you use, how your grill works, etc., there a ton of things that can affect the cooking time of your burger. For best results, use a digital probe thermometer to check the meat's internal temperature so you know when it's done. You want to hit 155 degrees F if you're following food safety guidelines.

More: 22 mouthwatering burgers that aren't made of beef

10. Give it a rest

You probably know not to cut into a steak or roast as soon as it comes out of the oven, but did you know you should let your burgers rest when they come off the grill, too? Tent them loosely with foil, letting them relax for five to 10 minutes. This will allow the juices to redistribute, so they don't rush out as soon as you take your first bite.

11. Choose the right bun

Last but not least, don't let your burger be overshadowed by too much bread. Ciabatta and pretzel rolls may sound tasty, but you want something that will allow your perfectly cooked burger to shine. A simple, soft and squishy bun is the perfect vehicle for grilled, beefy goodness. Sometimes a classic is classic for a reason.

12. Keep it simple

Speaking of classic, one of the biggest mistakes that excited and hungry people make after grilling up a good burger is to overload it with all the fixings. Yes, we know that gourmet burger bars are a thing, but you can also have too much of that good thing. Whether you're enjoying your burger alone or at a party, try to limit the toppings and focus your taste buds on enjoying that delicious, delicious well-cooked beef. (Mayo, mustard, lettuce, tomato and onion work for a reason.)
