Parents win fight for permission to give baby 'offensive' name

0
0

It's hardly unusual to hear of a baby being given an unusual name. In fact, it's more surprising when the name is, well, normal. These days, anything goes, and parents are taking their inspiration from many places other than the baby name books.

More: Mom is cucumber-cool as she delivers her own baby in less than a minute

For example, the animal kingdom. One Spanish couple has made the news for giving their baby boy a name to reflect their love of animals: Lobo, or "Wolf" in English.

It’s unlikely to reach the top of the baby name chart, but to each their own, right? Well, in this case, not without a fight. Nako and Maria Javierre were initially told by the Madrid Civil Registry Office that they couldn’t name their tot Wolf because it might be "offensive."

The couple refused to back down, however, and created an online petition to garner support for their baby name choice. After the petition reached 25,000 signatures, the Spanish authorities reviewed the application and eventually approved their request.

More: This mom realized she made a big baby name mistake

It's extremely rare for authorities to interfere in parents' baby-naming decisions, but this isn't the first time it's happened. Earlier this year, a U.K. judge ruled that a mother could not call her children Cyanide and Preacher.

Should parents be allowed to name their kids whatever they choose, no matter how crazy or offensive other people may deem those names to be? Of course they should. It's nobody else's damn business — like any other parenting decision. The only consideration should be whether the child could suffer as a result of their name. Nobody wants their little Preacher or Wolf to be bullied. But plenty of kids with regular names get bullied too. Plus, an unusual name can set a child apart in a good way. It's not a name most people will forget, which is always an advantage. It may make them feel special or unique. And there's always the chance that people with an unusual name strive to live up to that name in some way.

Nate Parker's baby name is filled with deep meaning

0
0

Congrats are in order. Actor and director Nate Parker and his wife, Sarah DiSanto, gave birth to their fourth baby girl recently, and when choosing a baby name, all signs point to the beautiful couple gaining inspiration from Parker's latest film project.

Parker and DiSanto, who met at Penn State when they were mere kids, gave their baby girl a name that is imbued with meaning, particularly at this moment in our country's history: They named her Justice. Without any context whatsoever, the name Justice is pretty and melodic. But it's impossible to separate her name from Parker's latest and greatest project thus far. After trying for years to get enough funding, Parker announced he is directing and starring in The Birth of a Nation, which promises to be a very different film from the notoriously racist one directed by D.W. Griffith in 1915.

More: Parental Advisory: STFU, Bad Moms and breastfeeding

Parker's version centers on Nat Turner (a role he'll take on), the former slave who led a rebellion through Virginia in 1830. He has also cast Gabrielle Union and Armie Hammer to star in his directorial debut, which scored an impressive $17.5 million deal with Fox Searchlight Pictures after showing at the Sundance Film Festival.

More: This mom realized she made a big baby name mistake

Considering how Turner is a prime example of a person who has dedicated his life to seeking justice for African-American slaves, it's natural to wonder whether justice was on the brain when Parker and DiSanto were discussing baby names. Then again, there's always the possibility that Black Lives Matter factored in, as Parker made no bones about where he stood with this tweet:

parker

parker

More: Your search for a unique baby name just got a whole lot easier

On his Twitter page, Parker describes himself as an activist and filmmaker and writes, "We are the leaders we've been waiting for ... let's get to work!" Prior to receiving funding for The Birth of a Nation, he famously said he would put all other acting projects on hold because this one meant so much to him.

Anyone who is unfamiliar with Parker might not know that the Virginia native has an impressive résumé of film credits that includes The Secret Life of Bees and Arbitrage with Susan Sarandon. He and DiSanto have been married since 2007, and they choose to live as private a life as possible in Los Angeles with their awesome army of girls. That may all change in a few months when this film hits theaters everywhere — but it's sweet to know this couple has their priorities straight, and the proof is in their baby girl's name.

Justin Bieber's like: I see your naked pics, Orlando Bloom & raise you one

It's been quite the week for anyone who likes to see hot celebs get naked.

More: Orlando Bloom looked like a proud stage mom watching Katy Perry at the DNC

First, Orlando Bloom went nude on an Italian paddleboarding trip with his girlfriend, Katy Perry. And now, maybe in an attempt to make some weird jab at Bloom (?), Justin Bieber was photographed frolicking around Hawaii in the buff.

Justin Bieber gets nude on vacation to clap back?

Bieber and Bloom have been in a sort of mini-feud for years. It started in the summer of 2014 when Bieber started hanging out with Bloom's ex, model Miranda Kerr. When Bloom and the Biebs ran into each other in a restaurant, Bloom reportedly threw a punch at Bieber before telling him, "Say 'hi' to Miranda." Later, Bloom started hanging out (and maybe hooking up) with Bieber's ex, Selena Gomez.

More: Justin Bieber turned down $5 million to perform at the RNC

And so, before the internet had a chance to stop ogling at Bloom's naked bod, they get to check out Bieber's too. Please tell us the future of the celeb feud is just hot guys one-upping each other by getting naked.

And Bieber even upped the naked game — while Bloom was letting it all hang out in Italy, Perry kept her swimsuit firmly in place. But while Bieber has been freeing the peen, his girlfriend, bikini model Sahara Ray, has been stripping down right along with him.

BRB, looking for ways to manufacture feuds between some other Hollywood hotties so we can get them naked too.

These baby names inspired by jobs are a labor of love

0
0

Looking for naming inspiration? Look no further than these job-related baby names. What we now call occupational names probably started out as some of the first surnames used in society. If your name was Bill and you were occupied as a baker, for example, you might have been known as Bill the Baker, and eventually Baker became your surname.

MoreMom is cucumber-cool as she delivers her own baby in less than a minute

On that note, it's not unusual for last names to transfer for use as first names, and in fact it's become somewhat of a trend in recent years, for both boys and girls. These baby names, all of which probably started off at the end of someone's name, actually make a great (and sometimes pretty unique) choice for your baby's first name.

While many of these names seem to trend towards the boy side of the gender spectrum, there are plenty that would make great choices for girls, too. Bailey is a good example of a name that would work for either sex, and some of these would be creative choices for the new little girl in your life, such as Harper and Piper, and Sailor and Sawyer — and even more.

Whether you have experience working at a granary or just think Granger is a kick-ass name, let this hefty occupational baby name list inspire you as you look for the perfect moniker for your baby boy or girl.

Sarah Michelle Gellar is officially team Hillary Clinton — that's right, Buffy is with Her

0

Sarah Michelle Gellar has never been too open about her political beliefs, but it's no secret the Buffy actress has, for the most part, leaned Republican.

More: Meet the powerful women of the #BlogHer16 Experts Advisory Board

In the current election, however, that's changed. At this year's BlogHer conference, Gellar — a keynote speaker at the event — revealed during a speech that she'll be voting blue this year, and for a very important reason.

When asked whether she watched the Democratic and Republican national conventions and what her thoughts were, Gellar had this to say: "I watched it all, I think it’s a very important time for our nation. It is a very tricky position to be in, in terms of, I have respect for both parties. People are allowed to have different viewpoints."

More: Sarah Michelle Gellar: Let's make baking a family bonding experience again

But when it comes to which candidate she'll be supporting, Gellar said she was influenced by her 7-year-old daughter.

"I am incredibly honored that my daughter lives in a time where she sees that a woman can possibly be President. I think that's really important for daughters to understand that," she explained. "Look it’s hard, both parties buy my prodcuts, you know what I mean? That being said, I’m with her. I have known that family for a very long time. I believe that, you know, that there’s a lot of change that can be made and like I said, I’m incredibly proud to be able to look at my 7-year-old daughter and when she says, 'Mommy, one day can I be president?' I can honestly say to her, 'Yeah, there's a chance that you could,' which is not something that my mother could say to me when I was that age. I think it’s all about shattering that glass ceiling and understanding that, ya know, we can change the world. Women can, men can, but we all have to work together as a team to do that."

Still, Gellar recognized the difficult choice that many Americans will face when they head to the polls in November.

"It’s a difficult time, it's definitely a strenuous time for our country — for the world — but I think that — through being open-minded and respectful — having those difficult conversations are important, but I think the most important thing that everyone needs to remember is to respect everybody’s opinions whether you’re a Republican, a Democrat, an Independent, whether you’re for Bernie or whatever it is," she said. "We have to work together as a country, as a team. That was how America was built, was for the people. It was to get away from being an oppressive... There was no King, there was no I. It was a we, and I worry that so much of what’s happening now is so negative and I wish it could be in a more open and positive space."

Easy s'mores hacks that deliver the goods without the third-degree burns

0
0

I was well into my 30s before I had the opportunity to make a proper fire-roasted s’more. I grew up in Brooklyn, where setting fires is severely discouraged and our people are bred to fear nature. We’re essentially held captive within the city walls by a well-coordinated army of rats and pigeons. We don’t need to know what’s out there in the woods.

I’ve made s'mores in a toaster. I’ve made them to put into cakes and pies and puddings, but never one out in the wild where they belong. This changed a few summers ago, when my family was invited to spend a weekend at my aunt’s beach house. As a professional chef, I was able to pick up a lot of details that the average camper wouldn’t when it comes to the technique that will lead you to a perfect s’more. Here’s what I’ve learned.

More: 2 twists on s'mores you can do anywhere, no campfire necessary

Don’t go to the beach

There’s sand everywhere! It’s terrible! It gets into your eyes, sticks to the marshmallows, then the marshmallows stick to your hands, and you get even more sand on them, then you try to wipe the sand out of your eyes but just end up putting more in. Now you’ve blinded yourself, and somewhere close by there is a deep hole full of fire. These are extraordinary conditions to expose yourself to for the sake of a cookie.

Bring a gigantic flashlight

Fire doesn’t give you enough light. In fact, all I was able to see in the vastness of the pitch black was the fire itself. Essentially I was completely blind, trying to put these things together using only my sense of touch, then holding my hands out into an open flame and praying the marshmallows would divert the flames from my innocent flesh. Speaking of the darkness…

Lock your children in the car

Since all you’ll be able to see is the fire, you’re really going to need to be hoping for the best when it comes to your children's whereabouts. They could be heading into the ocean, wandering off into the woods, running straight toward the fire at top speed. You can concentrate on their safety, or you can concentrate on making these damn s’mores come together. You can send for them when you need them.

Don’t gather roasting sticks from the wild

This part of the experience was actually really fun — strolling through nature, searching for the perfect sticks upon which to skewer marshmallows. It was a simple scavenger hunt the entire family could enjoy. Then later, I watched a whole bunch of dogs messing around in that same area and realized I was covered in marshmallows, sand and animal urine.

Know what? Screw the wilderness altogether

It’s way too much work. Get a friend with a fire pit. I suppose you could get a fire pit yourself, but it looks like a lot of maintenance for something I’m going to use maybe twice. Find the guy in your neighborhood with a pool and a fire pit, and start sucking up.

More: We turned s'mores into ice cream sandwiches, and now we want s'more!

Don’t buy specialty s’mores equipment

As difficult as it is to make s’mores, knowing you’re the person who needed to waste $20 for a specialized device to make one solitary item is infinitely worse than some silly third-degree burns. If you want easy s'mores, you can make them in the oven. You can put them on the grill over a waxed paper-lined sheet of heavy-duty aluminum foil. There are so many ways to do it the half-assed way that there is no need to be buying useless garbage to assist you in it.

If you’re bothering with an attempt at Open Fire Pit Roasted Danger S'mores, you roll up your sleeve, get in there and make some goddamn Danger S'mores — that is, in the safety of your friend’s backyard, where any problems will be covered by their homeowner's insurance.

Find the sweet spot of roasting coals

Initially I found two options when toasting a marshmallow: Either hold it over the flame and look at it quizzically, wondering if it’s toasting at all, or repeatedly set it on fire and blow it out. While I’ve grown to love the taste of burning marshmallow, the optimal toast is a rich, golden brown. Remember: Marshmallows are practically pure sugar. You’re looking to create a fluffy pillow of caramel.

After many disastrous attempts, I discovered my mistake: Marshmallows are not meant to be roasted over a fire. They are meant to be roasted over the embers of a fire once the main meal has been cooked and the fire is dying. Find a spot off to the side where you see glowing coals, then hold your marshmallow a few inches over, and rotate the marshmallow slowly, like a rotisserie chicken. Keep doing this until it becomes the perfect darkness for your liking.

Get a partner

I find that s’mores work best when there are two people involved. One person toasts, the other is on standby. Once you’re at toasted perfection, have your partner grab onto the marshmallow using the graham crackers and chocolate. Then you slide out the stick, twisting as you go, and voilà! Perfect s'moreage. Start passing them around while you get back to toasting. With this assembly line method, you can actually make a few at a time instead of waiting forever for your turn at ooey, gooey goodness.

Break with tradition

Who says you need to be doing the same thing over and over? Try swapping out the chocolate bars for fun-size bars of your favorite candies (I’m a sucker for Snickers). Spread peanut butter on your graham crackers. Or do away with the graham crackers entirely — use homemade chocolate chip cookies, Oreos or Hawaiian rolls stuffed with Nutella. Clear out the junk food aisle at the supermarket, and go crazy. It’s summertime, and we’re setting things on fire! There are no rules!

And if this is all too much work

Line a baking sheet with parchment paper, throw on some graham crackers, top them with chocolate and a marshmallow, and then bake at 400 degrees F for five minutes. Smoosh another cracker on top, and there you go — s’mores for 20 in no time flat. Everyone is happy, and your skin and your corneas live to see another day. Summer safely, my friends.

Even my family judges me for my 'weird' religion

0

Look to Oshun.

This was the random phrase that came into my mind during meditation — the one that started me on a nearly decade long journey into practicing a much maligned and largely misunderstood tradition. At the time, I had no idea of its meaning or the changes that delving into it would bring to my life. In fact, I didn’t even know who Oshun was.

More: 27 quotes that make following your impossible dreams sound possible

I did, however, know enough to at least take some time to do a little research, and doing so led me to studying and practicing a tradition that I never would have imagined on my own.

The tradition in question is Ifá, one of many African diaspora traditions that are practiced around the world. The few times I’ve mentioned my tradition to people, they’ve immediately associated it with voodoo, or the media version of it anyway, another African diaspora tradition still practiced in parts of the South and Caribbean. Because of a combination of media misinformation, racism and general misunderstanding, these traditions have become synonymous with black magic, blood sacrifice and zombies. Needless to say, these misunderstandings give people a very negative view of my tradition and, by extension, myself, when in fact the tradition has more to do with honoring your ancestors and the earth than poking people with voodoo dolls.

In the Ifá tradition, Oshun is the Goddess of creativity, beauty and love, a fitting Goddess for a writer. Indigenous African traditions were brought over to the Americas during the era of slavery, when many of them blended and synchronized with both Christianity and the beliefs of the local indigenous peoples to form new religious systems such as Vodun, Candomblé and Santeria.

More: I was that secret shopper quietly judging everyone in the store

It was also during this time that the demonization of these traditions began. Practitioners were told that their religion was savage and evil, tantamount to devil worship and forbidden to practice. This view of African diaspora traditions still exists today. Fueled by historical oppression and modern day media images, any mention of African religion still brings to mind images of voodoo dolls and blood sacrifice. It’s little wonder then that although the reclaiming of these traditions — especially by young African Americans — is growing, it’s still something that is kept relatively under the radar.

Many black families are deeply religious, and the church still has a major influence on culture, community and family life. Though my family is not as religious as some, this was still true for me growing up, to some extent, and has certainly played a role in why I’ve largely hidden my new religion from my family.

When I offhandedly mentioned to my grandmother, for instance, that she reminded me in some ways of the New Orleans Voodoo Spiritual Temple proprietor, who I’d made friends with while researching a book, she was genuinely shocked and expressed heartfelt concern for the safety of my soul. After getting this reaction over a mere friendship, I realized it might be best to keep my practice largely to myself — even as far as my family is concerned.

My mother, who considers herself agnostic, is the only one who knows, and as open-minded as she is, she’s largely avoided talking to me about it in depth.

Dating has been a whole other challenge. It’s not that I’ve sought out people who have a similar practice, but rather that the reactions I’ve gotten from the few romantic partners I’ve told have been so negative. They range from condescension that I, an educated person, would believe in something so "silly" and "primitive," to horror that I would practice "witchcraft" or "devil worship."

More: Hillary Clinton's fight for disability rights is a fight for me too

Needless to say, both of these reactions come from people who don’t know the first thing about the actual beliefs or practices of African tradition. In truth the tradition is one of the oldest in the world, predating the concept of the devil by thousands of years. It’s a complex system based on ancestor worship and reverence for the natural world that, like most indigenous traditions, is anything but primitive.

What’s more, the practice of Ifá has been immeasurably good for me and brought immense positivity into my life since I began studying it. My Iya, short for Iyanifa, a priestess of the tradition, has become like a second mother to me. I’ve spent countless hours at her house just talking about life — mine as well as hers — and getting guidance. Sometimes this guidance is in the form of spiritual divinations, but more often it's just solid, good advice from an elder family member. The handful of times I’ve met other practitioners, they’ve also often felt like instant family; the community vibe is very much encouraged at least in the diaspora traditions that I’ve seen.

Practicing Ifá has also encouraged me to look into my family history. To be more aware and grateful for the sacrifices of my ancestors, both known and unknown. It’s given me a new perspective on the importance of nature, family and community and, in my opinion, has made me a more patient, happy person overall.

I will probably always get negative reactions from some people whenever I mention the tradition I follow, but in some ways I’ve found this to be a good thing. It serves as a sort of litmus test for new people. Anyone who would make judgments on an unfamiliar tradition is probably not someone I would get along with in the long-term anyway. Most family members have come to be at least understanding of the urge to connect to a culture and ancestry that was stolen generations ago. Overall, following this tradition has improved my relationship with the world around me immeasurably, more than making up for any short-term negative effects.

Will we see a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot? Sarah Michelle Gellar weighs in

0
0

Now a wife, mother and business owner, Sarah Michelle Geller has learned plenty in the years since her many cult classic roles. But as she revealed at this year's BlogHer conference, the door could still be open to revisit her career-making turns.

More: Sarah Michelle Gellar: Let's make baking a family bonding experience again

Fans will pick up their stakes in glee to hear that Gellar isn't saying no to a Buffy the Vampire Slayer reboot. "Look, you never know," she told conference-goers.

But she admits that a new generation of Buffy viewers could have more to learn from a new kind of slayer. "That being said, the point of Buffy — what was so special about it, why it still resonates today — was it was a metaphor for the horrors of high school, the horrors of that time of growing up," she said. "The monsters were literally the manifestation of the horrors of that time. I think that's a very specific story. If you’re talking about now, that's a very different story, and I don’t know… I don’t know what that story is now."

But Geller isn't averse to the idea of a new slayer, with a whole new generation of horrors. "The whole idea of Buffy giving her power… at the end, the lore was 'unto one generation a slayer is born, there could only be one,' and at the end, we broke that. Why does there only have to be one?"

She already has one idea for a potential new version of the series — cyberbullies as the vampires. "Bullies were a literal bully when Buffy was growing up. They punched, they were physical... Well, now a bully is something that you hide behind on a screen. What is that story? But I think that story would have to be told with someone of that age."

More: Sarah Michelle Gellar has come a long way since her Buffy the Vampire Slayer days

While the Buffy reboot is still a wish on a star, Cruel Intentions is very much happening. Gellar tells fans to "look for an announcement probably in the next month and a half."

The journey has been difficult, she admits, but fans have already been waiting since 1999. What's a few more months? "We have some exciting stuff planned, and it’s going to be good," she says. "The road is taking a little longer than normal, but we’ve all been adamant that to do it, we have to do it right, and we have to do it. It’ll probably start filming at the beginning of next year.”

The good news is, it'll be just as controversial as the original. Gellar says it's a "naughty" show that "pay[s] homage to what it is." Consider my calendar marked.

So, is Bethenny Frankel engaged or what? Because it sure looks like it to us

Bethenny Frankel has been posting pictures of her new man, Dennis Shields, all over her social media lately. There are Snapchats of them together, Instagram posts and this week, there was a photo on Frankel’s Instagram Story that showed her hugging Shields’ head with a huge ring on her ring finger. People are starting to wonder if she’s engaged now.

Frankel’s divorce with her ex, Jason Hoppy, is officially finalized, so she has nothing holding her back from moving on and getting engaged. And she seems to be happy with Shields. There’s no reason for her not to celebrate her love with an engagement right now. Plus, did you see the size of the ring?

According to Page Six, it’s just a ring that happens to be on that finger. The magazine reported that they talked to people in Frankel’s camp who said, “nothing new to report… She is enjoying her summer.”

Again, it’d be impossible not to enjoy a summer where you get a ring like that as a gift.

More: Bethenny says "fundamental differences" caused divorce

It’s not that surprising if Frankel is engaged. She’s been dealing with a terrible, painful divorce for three years now. Despite the fact that she was legally married, her heart and mind have been ready to move on for three years now.

And quick engagements might just be what the women of The Real Housewives of New York do. LuAnn de Lesseps is currently on a nationwide tour of celebrations and dinners and parties, all in honor of her new engagement. And her relationship is riddled with rumors and skeletons.

Frankel has at least found herself a relationship that doesn’t have a lot of complicated rumors associated with it. If she’s finally happy and feels like Shields is the one, I say she should announce it so we can all be happy for her and celebrate her new life.

I stopped wearing my wedding ring after seven years of marriage

0
0

After seven years of marriage, I stopped wearing my wedding ring.

There was no big fight. In reality, my husband and I were having some of the best months of our marriage after nearly a year of struggle. We were being open and honest with each other. We were working on giving each other the space to be our full selves.

Something about that space made me look down at my hand and think, Why am I wearing this?

I couldn’t answer that.

Growing up, I saw my unmarried parents fighting and waited for them to leave each other, grateful they weren’t legally bound. I didn’t dream of a beautiful dress. I didn’t dream of a husband. I had no religion to suggest to me there was something sacred about a union. And when it came down to it, I was fully skeptical that two people should ever sign a contract with an oath of till death — gulp — do us part.

But married I was. My husband and I signed the paperwork in a courthouse when I was 17. My husband was from the United Kingdom, and we could either get married to keep him in the States, where we could be together, or he could keep leaving to go home. At the time, this seemed like an impossible option.

We planned the non-wedding with two days’ notice. His mother gave us some money and we ordered our rings in bulk — a three pack off of Amazon, an engagement ring, and matching wedding rings for us both. When they arrived the day after we were married, I had to ask which hand I was supposed to put them on.

I’d barely gotten used to calling him my boyfriend. And there he was — my husband.

Marriage became an armor I wore. We weren’t allowed to fizzle out like another high school relationship might. To fail meant to prove everybody right: The teachers and my peers who suggested I was naive (I was) or that I would end up pregnant within the year (I did not) or that I would be stuck in that small town for the rest of my life (I wasn’t).

This was how my husband and I forged our relationship. We had to prove everybody wrong.

And then last year, my mother died. Losing her, I realized with an intense clarity that only grief can provide how much of my life I was missing. I was caught up trying to be perfect so that I could avoid any pain or disappointment. And yet there was no avoiding the pain of losing her.

Almost immediately, my husband and I started fighting. We fought about my brother, who had moved in with us. I got resentful of all the responsibilities that were on my shoulders that I felt my husband wasn't trying to alleviate. But the details didn't matter. What mattered was that we started digging into every last thing we’d done to hurt each other, and for the first time, I felt like I was seeing our relationship for what it was, right there in that moment, and not for what it could be someday in the future. I looked at us and couldn’t see why either of us was still there.

For the first time, I was looking at our relationship and thinking, I don’t have to be here. What's the worst that could happen if I leave? If I leave, I will still exist.

So I started planning to leave. We were going into the holiday season, and I thought it would be cruel to leave then. I figured I would leave in January, the month my brother was expected to move out. Instead, on Thanksgiving Day, my mother's favorite holiday, my husband made us dinner and got frustrated with my silence. "It's like you're not even here. I feel like you're stringing me along," he said.

"You're right," I told him. "This isn't working."

For two hours I explained why I couldn't stay. I was measured and patient as he asked me questions, and I felt relief that I was saying exactly how I felt. I wasn't blaming him or me. We weren't fighting. It seemed like it was really, truly done. But then he asked me what I wanted to do about sleeping arrangements. It felt like he had surrendered to the idea that there was nothing he could do, that I was making my own choices, and that's when I felt a glimmer in my gut that maybe we could start from there, from that broken place of near-leaving and surrender. "Maybe we can start over?" I said. I told him I wasn't staying forever but that I would stay for today, and we could see where it went from there.

It sounds cliché. I can't get away from that. We took a long weekend together and had the most honest conversation we'd had since we'd met.

It was three months later, when we'd fallen into a comfortable connection again, that I slipped the ring off my finger and put it in my jewelry box. I wanted to see what it felt like to be free of it. I didn't know why at the time.

"Are you trying to tell me something?" my husband asked when he noticed its absence. It took him a while to believe me when I said it didn't.

By taking off the ring, I was giving myself space. The space to be a married person who could decide for herself what that meant. A person who was choosing to be here. A person who was willing to let go. A person who was whole all on her own.

My husband still wears his wedding ring. He told me that when people ask why I don't wear mine, he says, "That's just not who she is as a person." It took me a long time to realize that was true.

Taking off the ring was a way of coming back to myself. Maybe. Or maybe it was just a ring.

Sit down, Seth Cohen fans: Ryan Atwood was far better and you know it

When I first saw Seth Cohen 13 years ago, he was everything I wanted in a TV crush. Funny, smart, adorably geeky with an irresistible talent for sarcasm and a heart of gold, Seth was the guy who every teenage girl and her mother fell in love with when The OC premiered in summer 2003. But, looking back at the classic teen soap, I can’t help but wonder if Seth was really all that great. In fact, as I’ve gotten older, I’ve realized that Ryan Atwood is way more crush-worthy than Seth Cohen.

More: 15 The OC GIFs that accurately express how excited we are for the musical

Ryan Atwood started out as the bad boy from Chino who "stole a car — crashed it," smoked and owned nothing but white tank tops and leather cuffs. In other words, he was your classic rebel without a cause. Seth, on the other hand, was like a lost puppy, just looking for a friend to play video games with and to save him from his bullied existence. It’s no wonder everyone thought Seth was so great — he wasn’t a threat. Seth was the kind of boy who would be loyal to you no matter what, and his devotion to Summer seemed to confirm that theory.

The OC Pilot Clip

The OC Pilot Clip

Yep, for a long time, I thought Seth was a dream boyfriend. But — and I hate to break it to you — Seth was actually kind of awful in a relationship. He couldn’t decide between Anna and Summer, so he dated both of them, causing heartbreak all around. He finally chose Anna, only to realize that she was boring AF and that he wanted to be with Summer. He abandoned Summer to sail to Tahiti and then expected her to forgive him. (Seriously, Seth, what were you thinking?) Meanwhile, Ryan saved Marissa’s life, helped convince her mother to let her go to therapy instead of shipping her off to rehab, remained friendly after she nearly got herself killed with Oliver and only left her because he thought he had impregnated his perfectly nice ex. Ryan was even willing to kill his own brother to protect the love of his life. (OK, that last one is kind of bad, but still.) In other words, where Seth was selfish in his relationships, Ryan was always loyal and giving. Ryan 1, Seth 0.

More: 7 moments from The OC musical that you need to see

Not only was Ryan more loyal than Seth, but he was also way more reliable in a crisis. Seth might have been smart, but he tended to panic in sticky situations. Ryan, on the other hand, was a man of action. Yes, sometimes those actions — breaking Marissa out of the hospital, for example — had some pretty bad consequences. But, when the chips are down and you’re stuck in a jam, who would you rather call, Ryan or Seth? Ryan 2, Seth 0.

Hey Jeremy Calvert, propose to Brooke Wehr already — we know you want to

Is he or isn't he? Teen Mom 2's Jeremy Calvert is dropping some very hard hints that he's about to get engaged to girlfriend Brooke Wehr.

More: A wedding and baby could be on the way for Teen Mom 2's Jeremy Calvert

Earlier this week, he shared a photo of Wehr on Instagram with the caption, "This beautiful, amazing woman has stole [sic] my heart. I love her you [sic] so so much baby doll, 2 more weeks and I damn sure can't wait #wcw #myone&only #shesamazing #gunnaputaringonit."

As The Inquisitr points out, Wehr has also been dropping hints that the couple is planning to take their relationship to the next level. The couple is planning a vacation together, and in a photo shared to Instagram, Calvert commented directly at his girlfriend, "Lol if only u knew. I love you baby doll can't wait for vacation and being home together."

More: Teen Mom's date night was a slap in the face to Leah Messer

The tabloids claim that the couple is only planning their engagement. That's certainly one possibility, especially since these screen-loving stars never gave fans an official engagement announcement. But reading a little more closely into their exchange, is it possible that the two are already engaged? When was the last time you heard a man tell his girlfriend he's planning to propose in exactly two weeks, let alone announce that fact publicly on Instagram? Is it possible the couple is planning something a little more official... like a wedding?

Thankfully, we have a solid resource for finding find out: Watch Calvert on the next season of Teen Mom 2. Calvert isn't confirmed to return for Season 7, but we have a feeling if he's already tied the knot — or in the midst of wedding planning — producers will work overtime to make sure we see him on screen.

Teresa Giudice might not want to see what Jacqueline Laurita wrote about her

0

Jacqueline Laurita and Teresa Giudice have a very complicated friendship. On this season of The Real Housewives of New Jersey, the women decided that they were going to give each other a fresh start and try to rebuild the relationship they once had. I think that pact lasted about two weeks.

On her Bravo blog, Laurita wanted to discuss Giudice and the way she talks about rumors and tabloids. During last week’s episode Siggy Flicker wanted to approach Giudice about a rumor she had heard and Laurita told her not to do it. Laurita knew first hand what could happen if Giudice felt attacked by tabloid rumors.

More: The Real Housewives of New Jersey bring catfight to Twitter

She wrote in her blog, “I advised Siggy not to even ask Teresa about the tabloid rumors because I’ve learned from the past that Teresa doesn’t like to be questioned about them. Even if she is the one giving the information to the tabloids for a little extra money or for any other reason.”

On the show, Flicker ignored Laurita’s advice and did approach Giudice. To Laurita’s surprise, it went well. She wrote, “I was shocked but pleasantly surprised to hear Teresa was much calmer and not as defensive about Siggy’s inquiry as she had been with mine.”

Laurita could have stopped there. The first part was catty, but these women aren’t always known for taking the high road. If she had stopped at her praise for Giudice’s personal growth everything would be fine. But that’s not what happened.

She continued with, “I thought maybe now she finally understood why, as a friend, I had asked her about the tabloids that were saying there was a possibility of her going to jail, and that she had finally put it behind her and would never bring it up again. Yeah right. If you have not seen the previews for next week yet…stay tuned. One step forward, two steps back.”

More: RHONJ's Jacqueline Laurita given a dramatic ultimatum by Bravo

I understand Laurita’s frustration. She does seem to get the worst treatment from Giudice when she’s trying to do her best to be a supportive friend and get to the truth. Laurita leads a very honest and open life and to have a friend who doesn’t share those same beliefs would be really difficult to deal with.

But it doesn’t sound like she wants to be open with Giudice here, it sounds like she just wants to be right. She wants Giudice to admit that she shouldn’t have blown up at Laurita all those years ago.

I’m not even friends with these ladies and I know that’s never going to happen.

More: RHONJ's Teresa Giudice & Jacqueline Laurita finally end long-standing feud

The best bet is for Laurita to let go of her need to be right and just enjoy Giudice for who she is. That means just stop throwing shade or needing to be right. She should just decide that she's letting go of the past and get to know this new, improved Giudice.

Police video shows cops shot at black teen's car before killing him

Chicago police released video footage taken just moments before cops shot and killed an unarmed black teen, Paul O'Neal, who was just 18 years old. The disturbing clip, taken on July 28 from police officers' body cameras and dashboard cameras, shows two cops emerging from their parked SUV as O'Neal headed in their direction in a Jaguar that had allegedly been stolen earlier that day. The police officers opened fire and began shooting at the vehicle as it sped by them.

O'Neal then crashed the Jaguar into a different police car before he got out of the vehicle and ran behind a house in the suburban Chicago neighborhood. The police proceeded to chase O'Neal before cornering him in a backyard. One ordered the teen to put his hands up and O'Neal was then shot in the back and killed. The officer who fatally shot him reportedly believed O'Neal had shot at cops earlier, but later discovered he was unarmed.

Warning: Although this video does not show the moment O'Neal was shot, it contains vulgar language and is very disturbing.

Once the video pans over, O'Neal on the ground with blood oozing from a wound on his back, it becomes increasingly difficult to feel anything but extreme sadness and remorse that this child died without so much as a word of comfort from any of the police officers. We want to support the men and women who put their lives on the line every day to protect communities, but it's heart-wrenching and disgusting to hear a few of the officers react to this teen's murder by congratulating each other and immediately thinking about what this will mean to their careers in law enforcement.

One of the cops was even caught giving another officer a high-five after the words, "Fuck, I'm going to be on desk duty now for 30 days," when he realized he had violated the police department's use-of-force policy by shooting at the car.

O'Neal's family viewed the footage before it was released to the public — and it should be said that this video was made public a lot sooner than anyone thought, which is, at the very least, a small positive step in the right direction. A spokesperson for the family said they believed they witnessed the "execution" of O'Neal and the family's attorney, Michael Oppenheimer, said the cops played "judge, jury and executioner." The video will be used as evidence in the family's federal civil rights lawsuit case against the Chicago Police Department.

Since the horrific incident, three officers from the department have been stripped of police duties pending the ongoing investigation. The officers' names have not been released.

Tara Reid third-degree burns Jenny McCarthy while addressing the walkout

Tara Reid is out promoting Sharknado 4, and she wants us to talk about it — but she isn't afraid to get a dig in while she's at it. Since she's still on the press circuit, she's now getting questions about the incredibly uncomfortable interview she had on Jenny McCarthy's radio show.

Reid stopped by Hollywood Today Live where host Ross Mathews couldn't resist asking a few questions about what exactly went down to create such a contentious interview.

More: Tara Reid should have handled her awkward interview with Jenny McCarthy better

"Something like that is so silly," said Reid, shaking off any notions that she's let the fight get to her. But she couldn't resist throwing a little shade McCarthy's way. "At least people now know you have a show," she continued.

Reid says she has no idea what brought on the pushy line of questioning about Marriage Boot Camp: Reality Stars, and even worse, her history of plastic surgery. "We never even had beef, so I don't even know where that came from. I think she actually purposefully did that to get ratings." As Mathews pointed out, coverage of the spat was everywhere.

Aside from a push for more listeners, Reid can't think of what she may have done to cause the conflict. The two had never met before, she told Mathews. "It wasn't like there was history there. I've never met her." Mathews told Reid, "I hope you two make up," but it doesn't seem like we'll be seeing a Sharknado cameo from McCarthy any time soon.

Can you safely give dogs human meds? And if so, which ones?

0
0

Once, while hiking in the Blue Ridge Mountains, my dog Moose and I both stumbled upon a hornets' next. Some hysterical screaming (and barking), flailing and generally looking ridiculous later, we were sitting on the sofa at my grandparents' cabin, nursing a few swollen welts. After swigging some Benadryl myself, I found myself wondering, "Can you give dogs human meds?" With no open veterinary clinic nearby, I called our vet back home. "Go for it," he advised me of giving Moose some of the over-the-counter antihistamine.

More: 10 healthy dog breeds that may save you some dollars on vet care

It was the first time I'd ever been told it was OK to give dogs human medication, and if I'm being really honest, I felt weird even doing it. However, it did help Moose's swelling go down and seem to make him more comfortable, so hey, I was a believer.

In the years since, I've been fortunate to not find myself in any more sticky situations with my pets where I needed to think outside the box to alleviate their pain. However, because I'm a bit of a worrier (it's kind of my thing), I tend to consider every possible worst-case scenario — and this often includes not being able to help an ailing four-legged friend when he or she needs pain relief in a pinch.

Before we go any further, let me state for the record that it is always best to consult your veterinarian before you give your pet any medication. They know your pet's unique medical history and can advise the best course of treatment. Having said that, there are certain human medications that are generally safe for dogs to take.

In fact, NSAIDs — or nonsteroidal anti-inflammatory drugs — are a class of drugs often prescribed to both human and canine patients. They are the most commonly prescribed pain relievers for animals thanks to their anti-inflammatory and pain-relieving properties.

That doesn't mean you can simply give your dog any over-the-counter NSAID you have on hand. Both Tylenol and ibuprofen, arguably the most common over-the-counter meds in this class, are toxic to dogs. "Many people don't realize that a medicine that's safe for people may not be safe for dogs or cats or that a dose that is safe for people may not be safe for their pets," said Melanie McLean, D.V.M., a veterinarian at the Food and Drug Administration, in an interview for the U.S Department of Health and Human Services.

So if you ever consider giving your dog an over-the-counter medication meant for human consumption, remember to a) call your vet and b) ensure you have the right dosage for your dog.

More: 6 summer safety tips to keep your dog happy and healthy all season long

Once you've taken those precautions, it's OK to help ease your pet's pain or symptoms with over-the-counter meds, according to Walker Valley Veterinary Hospital in New York. On the vet's website, you'll find a fairly comprehensive list of what can be safely used.

So if you're in a pickle with your pooch and have already been given the go-ahead by your vet, here are some of the over-the-counter meds you might want to have on hand so you can help your furry pal.

Bendadryl: For allergies and itching; 1 milligram per pound of dog.

Buffered aspirin: To relieve pain and inflammation; 1/2 baby aspirin for dogs under 10 pounds, 1 baby aspirin for dogs 10 – 30 pounds, 1/2 regular aspirin for dogs 30 – 50 pounds, 1 regular aspirin for dogs 50 –100 pounds, 2 regular aspirins for dogs over 100 pounds.

Dramamine: For motion sickness; 12.5 milligrams for small dogs, 25 milligrams for medium dogs, 50 milligrams for large dogs.

Hydrogen peroxide: Used to induce vomiting after accidental ingestion of toxic substances; 10 milliliters by mouth.

Pepcid AC (famotidine)/Zantac (ranitidine): To reduce stomach acids caused by ulcers, acid reflux or bellyache; 1/4 tablet for dogs under 20 pounds, 1/2 tablet for dogs 20 – 60 pounds, 1 tablet for dogs over 60 pounds.

Imodium A-D: For diarrhea; 1 milligram per pound of dog.

Hydrocortisone: For itching or irritated skin; small amount applied topically up to twice daily.

Gas-X: To minimize flatulence or gas discomfort; 1/4 adult dose for small dogs, 1/2 adult dose for medium dogs, 1 adult dose for large dogs.

Pepto Bismol: For diarrhea, vomiting and gas; 1 teaspoon per 20 pounds of dog's weight (toxic to cats!).

Robitussin DM: For coughing or hacking; 1 teaspoon per 10 pounds of dog's weight.

More: If your dog's farts can peel paint off the walls, we may have a cure

It's important to note that collies and other herding breeds possess a genetic mutation that makes some of the drugs listed above dangerous. This is yet another reason I can't stress enough the importance of consulting your vet before you play pharmacist to your pet.

Buy ethically made clothing without busting your bank account

SUB:

When looking for ways to lead a more sustainable lifestyle, fashion is sometimes an overlooked ethical choice we can make. Our everyday purchases can have an impact not only on the environment but also on the people and communities who make the garments we wear.

Fortunately, fast fashion isn’t the only way to stay on trend for cheap. These companies all provide ethical, sustainable options that are still fashion-forward and won’t break the bank.

1. Levi’s

Known primarily for its classic line of denim, Levi’s has been making positive strides toward minimizing its environmental impact by using less water and better cotton. Working with the Better Cotton Initiative (BCI) in 2005 to reduce the environmental impact of global cotton production, Levi’s strives to use 100 percent sustainable and recycled cotton in its products.

Levi’s also works with the World Wildlife Fund (WWF) to raise awareness and find solutions to reduce water impact of its apparel factories in high-risk areas facing water pollution, scarcity and ecosystem damage.

Levi’s donates 4 percent to the WWF and many other nonprofits if you use Levi’s coupons from Goodshop.

2. Patagonia

Whether preparing people for cold weather or an outdoor adventure, Patagonia has been supplying customers with eco-friendly and sustainable gear since its beginning. Using organic cotton for over 20 years, the company also expanded its commitment to labor ethics by working with Fair Trade Certified factories around the world to provide safe, fair and legal working conditions.

In addition to creating recyclable products and supporting grassroots activists, the company makes information regarding its own environmental and social impacts, from their carbon footprint to working to improve wages, public on its website.

With a company mission statement of “build the best product, cause no unnecessary harm,” Patagonia donates up to 4 percent through Goodshop coupons to nonprofits working toward the same goals.

3. Matt & Nat

Inspired by the connection between material and nature, Matt & Nat are committed to not using leather or any animal-based materials in their goods and accessories, which range from backpacks to wallets. Many of their products are made from 100 percent recycled water bottles, rubber and other sustainable materials. Since 2007, they have been committed to using linings made from 100 percent recycled plastic bottles.

On top of using sustainable vegan materials, the company makes sure factories are providing quality work conditions under the Social Accountability International standard.

Matt & Nat donate 2 percent of profits when you use their Goodshop coupons to organizations that provide fair working conditions and use eco-friendly materials.

If you said Saint West was 'fake,' Kim Kardashian has some words for you

Kim Kardashian gave a keynote speech at the 2016 BlogHer conference and revealed the most ridiculous rumor she’s heard about herself. To be honest, we thought it might be something like her having a fake butt or that she and Taylor Swift are working together. But no. What Kardashian revealed was way more absurd than that.

Kim Kardashian BlogHer

Kim Kardashian BlogHer

More: Kim Kardashian releases adorable first picture of Saint West

She told the BlogHer audience that there are people out there convinced that her son, Saint West, is fake. She said, "I wanted him to be able to go to the park every single day, like a normal human being, and no one knows who he is. And that would happen. And then I wouldn't post him. He's eight months old now, but people literally thought he didn’t exist."

Kardashian laughed at the absurdity of the whole thing, but it’s still a little crazy to think people would assume that she made all this up.

She said, "They thought I had this full fake baby and I made this whole thing up and he didn't exist because I wasn’t posting about it. And to me, that is so ridiculous."

More: Kim Kardashian needs to start sharing more pictures of her adorable son

It’s great that Kardashian has a sense of humor about all the rumors spread about her. I imagine that if she couldn’t turn them into a joke, she might go insane. But this brings up an interesting point about everyone who is starting these rumors.

The point is that when anyone starts making up rumors about children, it’s gone too far. Just because Kardashian is used to dealing with lies like this and can laugh about it, that doesn’t mean that people should keep creating them. It just isn’t a productive use of time.

If Kardashian were to post about her son all the time, she’d get slammed for over-exposing a child. Because she isn't posting anything, she gets rumors that she made the whole thing up. But when do we all get to the point where enough is enough?

More: Kanye West nails Mother's Day with elaborate surprise for Kim

We applaud Kardashian not only for not letting this kind of thing get to her but also for knowing that she’s doing the best thing for her child and continuing to put his happiness and safety first. That’s the truest sign of an extraordinary mom.

Make your own Magic Shell chocolate syrup with just 2 ingredients

0

As a kid, I was obsessed with Magic Shell, that liquid chocolate you poured over your ice cream that would immediately turn into a hard and crunchy cocoa shell as soon as it hit the ice cream. Like, I'm pretty sure my body chemistry each summer was 80 percent Magic Shell coating.

More: I made ramen ice cream, and it wasn't nearly as bad as I expected

But these days, I try to steer clear of high-fructose syrup and other mysterious ingredients, so I was elated when I heard about two-ingredient, DIY chocolate dip.

It's so easy it seems kind of crazy.

All you need is refined coconut oil and your favorite chocolate.

Add 2 cups of your favorite chocolate (chopped) and 1/4 cup of refined coconut oil to a microwaveable bowl, and microwave in 30-second intervals until it's all melted together. Stir to combine, then pour over your ice cream for magical results.

More: Olive oil: The secret ingredient you should be adding to your ice cream

If you want to get fancy, you can try the 3-ingredient method. It calls for corn syrup in addition to the coconut oil and chocolate for a slightly more fudgy flavor and texture.

No matter what you try, two things are certain: 1) You never need to spend money on an overpriced bottle of Magic Shell again, and 2) you may be an adult, but it turns out that pouring homemade chocolate dip into a bowl of ice cream at a 3-1 ratio will never, ever lose its appeal.
