Ben Affleck forgot the No. 1 rule for wearing pants: Button them

Wardrobe malfunctions aren't just for women, and Ben Affleck is proof.

More: Christine Ouzounian: 6 things about Ben Affleck's nanny no one is saying

Affleck had a major gaffe at the Suicide Squad after-party — he walked in with his pants unzipped and looking like they were about to fall off.

The funny part of the whole night was that Affleck attended the European premiere for the DC Comics film wearing the same suit and looking perfectly put together. Sometime between the premiere red carpet and arriving at the after-party at London's Claridge's hotel, Affleck managed to partially untuck his shirt, unbutton and partially unzip his pants and buckle his belt far outside of the loops. His top half, including his perfectly knotted tie, was still completely put together. What happened between the red carpet and the after-party, Ben? Was this a too-hurried bathroom break, or something more exciting?

Affleck's appearance on the red carpet was significantly more polished alongside his co-stars Harvey Cavill, Will Smith, Margot Robbie, Cara Delevingne and Jared Leto, all as dressed to the nines as Affleck. But despite his polished look, Affleck was spotted grimacing as he hiked up his pants on the red carpet, showing that his wardrobe issues may have started earlier than the after-party.

How to make homemade butter for unbelievably fresh flavor

You know that fulfilling, kind-of-smug feeling you get when you whip up a homemade meal that you get to enjoy with your family? Yup, you can feel the same way about your butter. It may be convenient to pick up butter at the grocery store, but we hope this super-simple stand mixer tutorial will convince you that it's almost as easy to make butter at home.

Honestly, I had no idea how easy making homemade butter would be. I always imagined sitting there, churning butter for hours and then ending up with only a sad resemblance of what I consider good butter. I was wrong. Making butter in your stand mixer takes just around 30 minutes, and it tastes better than any butter I can buy in the store. I lightly salted mine with some good sea salt, but you can throw in any seasoning or herbs, like garlic salt, thyme, rosemary, etc.

You can make homemade butter using a hand mixer as well. It may take longer, and you'll want to give your hand mixer a cool-off break every five minutes as prolonged use may cause the motor to burn out.

To start off, all you need is a 5-quart stand mixer and some cold, heavy whipping cream. I kept some fleur de sel sea salt nearby because I knew I wanted to salt my butter after it was made.

Pour your cream into the bowl of your mixer, and start beating the cream on medium-high speed. I like to put my splatter protector on my bowl, turn it sideways and seal up the back opening with plastic wrap. During the beginning stages of butter-making, it does not splatter too much, but later in the process, it can get messy.

Best to keep that bowl wrapped up.

After about five minutes, you will see the cream start to thicken up, and soft peaks will start to form. If you're not sure what soft peaks look like, check it out above. You see how the little top of the cream sorta falls over? That is a soft peak.

As you keep beating, the cream will start to thicken, and the soft peaks will give way to thick, whipped cream. At this point, the mixture will still be creamy, and you should not see any liquid.

Next up: Butter and buttermilk

{pageBreak}

As you beat the cream, it will start to look yellow (like butter), and you will start to notice liquid in the bowl. The whipped cream has now broken down, and you have butter and buttermilk. Keep beating until you get a totally broken-down mixture.

You can see how there is a lot of liquid in the bowl and small clusters of butter that will stick together when pressed together.

I put a strainer into a bowl (for the sake of the photos), but if you're doing this at home, I would suggest putting your strainer into your sink. Dump your mixture into the strainer and, using your hands (freshly washed!), start kneading the mixture together while lightly pressing it against the strainer. No need to be rough; you're just trying to press out any extra buttermilk.

Turn on your cold water, run the butter under the water, and smooth it into a ball. Since you're using cold water, the butter will not melt. You're simply rinsing off the buttermilk, which helps keep the butter from spoiling too fast.

Add the washed-off butter to a small bowl, top with sea salt (if desired), and work it into the butter by hand.

To store the butter, simply wrap it in plastic wrap, and keep it in the fridge for up to a week — if it lasts that long.

How to make homemade butter (in a stand mixer)

Yields 1 pound

Ingredients:

  • 6 cups cold heavy cream
  • 2 teaspoons sea salt

Directions:

  1. To the bowl of an electric mixer, add the heavy cream. Add the splatter guard to the bowl, and plastic-wrap any openings. This will help cut down on splatter.
  2. Beat on medium-high speed for about 15 minutes, until it has gone through the following steps: soft peaks, fully whipped and broken down. The butter is ready when it's yellow in color and you have lots of liquid in the bowl and butter that holds together when pressed.
  3. Strain out the liquid, and press out any remaining buttermilk in the butter. Run the butter under cold water, shape it into a ball, and place it into a small bowl.
  4. Top the butter with salt, and knead it into the butter until the salt is evenly distributed.
  5. Wrap the butter in plastic wrap, and keep it for up to a week in the refrigerator.

Kim Richards' rumored RHOBH salary demands are pretty outrageous

Kim Richards reportedly found out that Lisa Vanderpump is making big bucks for a season of The Real Housewives of Beverly Hills so now she's making her own demands.

More: RHOBH's Kim Richards could wind up in the slammer after all

According to Life & Style, Vanderpump rakes in $2 million per season of the show, which apparently has Richards upping her rate substantially.

"She believes she should get $1.5 million per season, with additional money for appearing at the reunion," an unnamed show insider told the outlet.

Unfortunately for Richards, she isn't a regular housewife anymore, but a "friend" of the show, which is a role that she would reportedly be lucky to get $150,000 per season for, depending on how frequently she appeared.

More: Kim Richards calls her Beverly Hills arrest a blessing in disguise

But Richards thinks she's a hot commodity, especially now that Yolanda Foster is out of the show. The insider also told Life & Style that Richards thinks she's the one who will carry the drama for the upcoming season, a role she thinks is worth the big bucks.

According to the insider, Bravo execs don't agree. At all. In fact, they reportedly think Richards is "delusional" to demand that kind of cash.

This report definitely contradicts Life & Style's article last November, in which they reported that Richards was returning to RHOBH as a "friend" and wasn't getting paid anything at all. As they stated previously, Richards just wanted the good PR after her debacles with the law and addiction.

More: Kim Richards' relationship with her daughter suffers on new reality show

Though it is also important to note that Richards' sister Kathy Hilton was rumored to be covering Richards' expenses while she focused on her recovery and health last year. Maybe Hilton decided she was turning that faucet off and now Richards needs the cash.

Do you believe Richards would really demand such a huge salary increase for RHOBH?

Your weight could make the flu shot less effective, so that's fun

The effectiveness of the flu vaccine may be compromised by your weight, according to a new study published in mBio. Researchers found that being overweight seemed to decrease the effectiveness of the shot, and being obese may make it fail altogether — a significant problem, as obesity already heightens your risk of complications from the flu.

To investigate this connection, scientists tested two groups of mice — one lean and one obese. Each group received the flu shot and were then exposed to the influenza virus. They monitored the animals to see which ones fell ill, and took blood samples to measure the level of their immune response. Not only did the obese mice have a lower level of flu-fighting antibodies, but the vaccine seemed to provide them no protection at all. And while the study was done on rodents, the researchers say it has serious implications for human beings too.

More: How to tell if your upset stomach is food poisoning or the flu

One of the most common factors that affect how well a medication works is your weight, yet we hear so little about this well-known fact among doctors. One reason may be the loaded nature of the topic. "Unfortunately the reality is, most doctors don't discuss this with their patients," says Robert Grossman, M.D., of Los Robles Hospital in California. "It's a very uncomfortable conversation to have."

Another reason may be that it's a woefully understudied topic. "FDA studies generally exclude the obese, by practice. They choose populations with no existing issues to control variables and get 'cleaner' data," Grossman says. "So often this type of information doesn't come out until 'after-market' studies, at which point you have to really look at the data to understand which patients are susceptible to which side effects."

The effectiveness of the flu shot in general is a matter of constant debate. Because scientists have to predict which flu strains will be most serious up to a year in advance, the shot may not provide great protection even under ideal circumstances. Last year, for instance, the shot was just 23 percent effective. Even when it's considered a good match, like the one forecast for the 2016-2017 flu season, it's still just 59 percent effective. So anything that could worsen that number, like the patient's weight, is vital information.

More: Sex may be your best defense against the flu

To be clear, this should not be a reason to fat-shame people. People of any weight and size deserve the best medical protections they can get. Rather, this seems to be a failure on the part of the medical community to create a dose or formulation for the flu shot that would be effective for the largest number of people. There will never be a perfect flu shot, but it seems like the least they could do would be to offer dosages calculated on weight instead of one set "adult" dose. There is currently a "high-dose" flu vaccine that is used primarily in seniors. It is unknown whether this dosage would be more effective in overweight or obese patients, but it may be worth asking your doctor about.

In the meantime, it's always a good idea to take what measures you can to protect yourself and others during cold and flu season, like always washing your hands, eating a diet rich in fruits and vegetables and staying home if you get sick.

Dear son, I was raped

Dear son,

What I’m going to tell you is going to make you uncomfortable, but you’re a teenager now, and I’m not going to sugarcoat this for you.

More: I was raped, I didn’t speak out, and I don’t regret it

I have lain on my back, staring at the swirls on a lampshade, trying to figure out what I did to deserve being pinned down, sweated on and told to shut the f*** up. I have wiped fresh blood from between my legs while crying in the bathroom. I have watched the trash truck drive away with the dress, the shoes and the underwear.

Your mother was raped.

“You want to share a cab?” said Mike, as he signed his name on the receipt for our bar tab in an odd cursive-print combination.

Mike was cute. Mike laughed at my jokes. Mike said I had nice hands.

“Sure, why not.” I’m a lightweight. I always have been. Two beers and I’m drunk. Three and I make bad decisions. On this night, I’d had four beers.

I caught a glimpse of myself in the mirror of the bathroom. The band was playing “Tempted,” and the singer was flat on the high notes, which made me cock my head and squint every time he got to the word “another.” I look good, I thought. The world was moving a little too fast for me to track, but I knew at least I felt good. Really good. Reborn, actually. I was freshly divorced and still vibrating from the power of saying, “I want out!”

More: I didn't know if I was raped so I kept silent – Brock Turner convinced me to speak up

We made out in the cab all the way from Chelsea to almost 110th Street. The driver had a lead foot and slammed on the brake way too late for the stoplights. Mike kept trying to run his hand through my hair, but I wore my hair curly then. It took a lot of products to keep it from frizzing into a cotton candy bouffant. I thought about stopping him, but he was so into it, and I didn’t want to kill the mood.

“Do you want to come in? I’ve got chocolate cake my sister made,” he asked.

“Um, well… ”

“Come on, you’ll love it. The frosting is to die for,” he said, kissing me again.

When we got to his apartment, I noticed right away how tidy it was. I hadn’t ever been inside a tidy guy’s apartment. Actually, I hadn’t been inside any guy’s apartment in years. My marriage was a little like being on a grand jury. Other people might have thought it was cool and interesting, but I just felt sequestered and eager for it to be over.

It was a nice place, for a studio apartment. Windows that looked out onto something besides a brick wall, a couch, a four-poster bed and a kitchenette with all the standard things: fridge, coffee pot, knife block.

“Do you want some coffee?” he asked.

“No, coffee gives me insomnia.” I instantly realized how stupid that sounded at 2:00 in the morning.

The cake was stale, but I ate it anyway while he had a Miller Lite he got from the vegetable crisper.

His bathroom was small, with a window that looked painted shut. In the full-length mirror, I noticed that my hair had frizzed and my lipstick was smeared under my nose. Why hadn’t he at least told me?

When I came out of the bathroom, he was no longer on the couch. His beer sat empty on the nightstand. The lamp was off.

“Hey there, gorgeous,” he said, patting the white cotton sheet. His clothing, underwear and shoes laid in a pile on the floor.

I lay down. With my clothes on.

He took them off.

I let him. He was really into it. Into me.

“One second,” he said and slipped a condom from his wallet.

He unwrapped it.

He put it on.

He got on top of me.

“Wait,” I said.

“What?” he said, continuing to kiss my neck.

“I… ” I pushed his hand out of my hair and scooted myself backward toward the headboard, trying to feel less pinned.

“What’s wrong? What’s the problem?” His voice was flat, like the singer in the band.

“I’m… just,” I tried to move left.

“Are you kidding me?” He rolled off of me, slapping the bed hard with his right hand. I could tell he was pissed. I could tell he felt cheated. I pulled the sheets up to my chin and sat all the way up. I couldn’t remember the last time I blinked.

“God dammit!” He ran his hand through his hair and wiped the sweat from his upper lip.

I gripped the side of the bed. “I’m sorry.”

He stomped into the bathroom and slammed the door. I put my clothes back on and let myself out.

Son, your mom was raped, but not by Mike. I’m not saying Mike did all the right things. He shouldn’t have had so much to drink. He should definitely not have tried to take home a very obviously drunk person. He could have controlled his frustration better. But, when Mike finally figured out that I was not into it? He stopped.

Mike stopped, and I NEED YOU TO STOP TOO.

I don’t give a shit about how horny you are, how hot she is or how long it’s been. The minute you get the slightest inkling she’s hesitant, you stop. It’s that simple.

No woman, NO WOMAN, deserves to lie there under you, hoping it will be over soon and wondering what she could have done to keep it from happening. Blaming herself for something that is 100 percent not her fault.

I cannot be un-raped. Neither can the people who are raped every day in this country. One person is sexually assaulted every two minutes. EVERY TWO MINUTES.

Don’t be that guy, son. Be better. Just stop.

Love, Mom

Reza Farahan's got a bigger heart than I do if he plans to forgive Golnesa

Right, we all know Shahs of Sunset is not short on drama, but the reunion show really dropped a bombshell: Golnesa "GG" Gharachedaghi admitted to lying about having a sex tape of Reza Farahan.

More: Shahs of Sunset's Mike Shouhed's cheating ways revealed amid divorce

Gharachedaghi and Farahan had a very heated argument at the end of the season about her reportedly being in possession of a sex tape of him giving oral sex to another man. But during the second part of the reunion show on Wednesday, Aug. 3, Gharachedaghi changed her tune and told Farahan that she felt "horrible."

Um, what?

"Hundred percent I apologize, Reza, for lying that I had it. I apologize for if I ever said I saw it. I am apologizing for all the damage it might have caused as well for my lies," Gharachedaghi said. But she also wanted an apology from Farahan because he doubted the fact that she has rheumatoid arthritis.

This made my jaw drop, seriously. Imagine the anguish Farahan must have been going through, thinking that at any point an intimate tape of him engaged in deeds he never thought would see the light of day could be exposed and how even the rumor of a sex tape could affect his professional credibility.

Imagine knowing that someone had that power over you. And then imagine how you would feel knowing they had lied about the whole thing just to cause you harm. That's pretty darn low if you ask me.

More: Shahs of Sunset scoop: Are Reza and Adam done for good?

The tape was also harming his marriage, as Farahan was in tears when he revealed that the tape had left his husband, Adam Neely, humiliated and hurt.

"Here I am with this guy that I love so much, that I just married — the story about the sex tape was hurting him, not me, and it was humiliating and hurtful to him," Farahan confessed, Daily Mail reports.

More: Shahs of Sunset star Jessica Parido engaged 8 weeks after filing for divorce

But is Gharachedaghi's apology too little too late? I mean, if I were Farahan, I'm not sure I would be able to forgive her for what she's done and mend the broken friendship, and the internet seems to agree.

Gharachedaghi took to Instagram to share a message about forgiveness, but not all comments are very supportive.

Golnesa Gharachedaghi Instagram

"I think you need rehab GG! Get some help!" nabrina_xo commented. gabby_nyc shared these thoughts, writing, "GG Needs serious therapy."

"Glad that you and Reza decided that there was hope for your friendship," bebe10025 wrote. "However i think that you do need some therapy so that you can get to the bottom of what is going on with you. Good luck and God bless."

Would you forgive Golnesa Gharachedaghi for her lie? Knowing how much damage it caused? Or should we applaud her for apologizing at all? Share your thoughts with us in the comments below.

Don't get too excited, but my money is on April as the pregnant Gilmore girl

Have you heard the theory that Lorelai and/or Rory may be pregnant in the Gilmore Girls revival? Ever since the official Instagram for the reboot shared a photo featuring a Pop-Tart platter with an apple, fans are going wild with the thought that one of the Gilmores is expecting.

More: 15 things we know so far about the Gilmore Girls revival

For those who don't recall, the only time Lorelai ever enjoyed an apple was when she was pregnant with Rory. So is this particular Instagram trying to tell fans that a baby is on the way? I mean, the revival trailer also showcases Lorelai wearing a shirt that reads, "I'm with human." It's definitely a possibility, but what if it's not a Gilmore? What if it's an entirely different character?

Gilmore Girls pregnancy

Gilmore Girls pregnancy

For example, what if it's Luke's daughter, April? Let's think about this for a moment. April is now an adult in college, pursuing graduate school options, and according to Vanessa Marano, her polarizing GG character is bringing something new to the table. In February she revealed the following about April to Just Jared Jr., "There is something I just found out, but I don’t think I can reveal it yet. When we come back, April has grown up, and she’s going through stages of her life when you get older and maybe change your personality a little bit."

Does anyone else think she may be referring to a pregnancy? There is a very good chance. Let's also not forget that when viewers first met April, she was obsessed with DNA and figuring out who her biological father was. Wouldn't it be appropriate if she is now pregnant? She first showed up searching for her dad, and now she could be expecting. It's like her story is coming full circle.

More: Gilmore Girls reboot: Where did the relationships end?

Also, if she is pregnant, then maybe that is one of the reasons Luke and Lorelai still aren't married yet. Like before, Luke could very well be coming to April's aid, which is once again hindering his relationship with Lorelai. However, Marano told JJJ, "There’s no drama that April is at the center of in this revival, which is so nice. She’s just kind of there, being a part of the family, which is awesome." She added, "I’ve only shot the one day at this moment in time, so as of right now… April is not breaking up any major couples right now. We’ll see how that goes…" Based on the end of Marano's response, April could easily still cause trouble, but let's hope the "April getting in the way of Luke and Lorelai" isn't a major storyline again.

Actually, Scott Patterson opened up to People about Luke, Loreli and the baby rumors. "I can tell you that we are together," he said about the beloved GG couple. "We are together, and we're sort of figuring out our next step." As for the possible pregnancy, he wouldn't give a direct answer, which just might mean a baby is on the way — and maybe for April.

Rory and Lorelai
Image: Netflix

Everyone should keep in mind that there may not be a pregnancy at all. The Pop-Tart and apple platter could mean something completely different. In Season 1, Episode 13, Lorelai made Rory, Paris, Louise and Madeline a snack consisting of Pop-Tarts and an apple, as you can see above. Maybe, just maybe, the platter in the Instagram is teasing a reunion of the four former Chilton students?

Even though Louise (Teal Redmann) and Madeline (Shelly Cole) don't seem to be returning (they could show up as a surprise), Liza Weil is as Paris Geller. A reunion is plausible. Or the platter might mean Paris and Doyle are expecting a child. Anyone else hope that's true? Just imagine them as parents — aka it'd be amazing.

More: You guys, Lorelai isn't wearing a wedding ring in the Gilmore Girls trailer

Really, the theories about this platter (which might not mean anything at all) are endless. Leave it to a plateful of Pop-Tarts and an apple to cause a stir in the GG fandom.

7 signs that point straight to sex addiction

$

In a statement this week, Ozzy Osbourne’s representative said the Black Sabbath frontman cheated on wife Sharon Osbourne because of sex addiction. That explanation was met with skepticism by one notable person: Ozzy’s longtime mistress. In her side of the story, Michelle Pugh claimed she and the rock legend had a “very real relationship,” that built slowly over time and wasn’t based entirely on sex.

Between that and Sharon’s apparent unawareness of Ozzy’s actions for a number of years, it is evident that what signifies sex addiction may not be clear.

That may be in part because sex addiction isn’t included in the Diagnostic and Statistical Manual of Mental Disorders, which is used by professionals to diagnose mental illnesses. Without the formal diagnosis, there is only a rough estimate that 3 to 5 percent of Americans deal with sex addiction. Many professionals believe the true figures are much higher.

More: After 10 years of toxic relationships, sobriety taught me what a healthy one looks like

Many of the symptoms are markers of otherwise normal (if not entirely healthy) behaviors, making it even more difficult to identify sex addiction. So, where is the line between recreational pornography viewing and an obsession? What is the difference between a high sex drive and an addiction? Are dominating behaviors always problematic? Lisa Bahar, licensed marriage and family therapist, said sex addiction is characterized by "an insatiability or sense of urgency and anger,” rather than mindfulness for a partner’s needs.

Here are several more indicators your partner may be addicted to sex:

1. Rushing from one relationship to the next: It’s one thing to have a common rebound romance or even stumble into a new relationship shortly after a breakup. When it becomes a habit, though, it may be symptomatic of the constant need for a sexual partner.

2. You regularly catch your partner in lies: Most addicts of any kind find themselves weaving intricate webs of lies to cover up their actions. For sex addicts, that may mean falsifying stories about where they’ve been or whom they’ve been with. Bahar added the behaviors of sex addicts also tend to escalate with riskier activities, such as meeting strangers for trysts or seeing prostitutes.

3. There is unexplained spending: Beyond lies that are coming our of your partner’s mouth, you may see the evidence on any shared bank accounts. Be especially wary of checks that disappear without explanation or cash that goes too fast, as savvy addicts will be careful not to leave a trail straight to pornography websites.

4. You feel used for sex: If you feel like your partner is always putting his or her sexual needs first, that’s a big red flag. Bahar said the key difference is between an “insatiable need for sex” and a healthy desire to be intimate. For addicts, she said this might mean becoming aggressive or angry when denied sex.

5. Your partner discourages safe-sex practices: Along with viewing someone else as a sexual object rather than a person who is loved, sex addicts are prone to putting their desires first — whether that means pushing you to have sex before you are ready or refusing to use protection.

More: How I accepted that my love couldn't save my husband from addiction

6. Your partner masturbates or watches porn too often: Each relationship will have unique parameters for what is “normal” in terms of masturbating or watching porn. However, if your partner seems to be indulging in these activities multiple times a day or right after sex, there may be cause for concern. As Brian Whitney, recovering sex addict and author of Raping the Gods, said to The Fix, “I would sometimes even masturbate right after sex — with my partner passed out next to me.”

7. Thoughts of sex interrupt activities of daily living: To say “sex is always on his or her mind” isn’t much of an exaggeration for addicts. In these cases, the person may struggle with focus on work or won’t have much interest in other hobbies. Bahar said addicts have a “quality of preoccupation that leads to obsession,” which may even make it difficult to hold down a job.

As with any addiction, the road to recovery is not easy or straightforward. However, Bahar said it is possible to overcome sex addiction — and it all begins with identifying the problem.

When you're Mariah Carey, how do you pass the time? You kill it onstage, stare at your humongous diamond ring and... make prank phone calls. Fans are getting an all new insight into Carey's personality thanks to her upcoming E! docuseries Mariah's World. Turns out she's not quite as diva-licious as she seems.

In a teaser clip from the new series, we learn that Carey takes advantage of her diva reputation to have a little fun. We see her on the phone with a well-meaning wedding planner who attempts to assist in her request for "the white tigers, the albino elephants..." for her special day. The caller assures Carey, "We're going to get Noah's Ark at your wedding, I promise."

Then she shows her devilish side. Carey turns to the camera and deadpans, "That guy doesn't know that I was joking." Who knew Mariah Carey likes to play pranks? When you're a pop icon marrying a billionaire like her husband-to-be James Packer, we can't quite blame the planner for assuming this wedding is going to be one heck of a show.

Miley Cyrus is usually bigger than life, but her wedding will be anything but

Miley Cyrus isn't exactly known for being understated, but a little change of style might be exactly the missing ingredient that makes her relationship work. According to Us Weekly, she's going with a small wedding to marry her beau, Liam Hemsworth. That's not quite the Coachella-esque, pink wig-worthy wedding we would imagine for her, but who says we shouldn't make compromises for love?

More: It's impossible not to smile at Liam Hemsworth & Miley Cyrus' Instagram video

A source tells Us Weekly that "[planning] is going great." The couple plans to wed on the beach in Hemsworth's native Australia, where they've been spending the majority of their time since getting back together last December. (The on-again, off-again pair has been together for four years and first got engaged in 2012.)

The couple is also going low-key and skipping the registry. The source claims that "Miley and Liam do not want gifts. They're going to ask all of their guests to donate to a charity of their choosing." Knowing Cyrus, she'll take full advantage of the happy occasion to raise awareness for her own charity, The Happy Hippie Foundation, which supports homeless and LGBT youth.

More: You know it's real when Miley Cyrus sports Liam Hemsworth's name on her body

Although they're keeping the guest list small, a few celebs — think her father, Billy Ray Cyrus — will likely be there to watch the couple tie the knot. Cyrus' godmother, Dolly Parton, even threw a little (accidental?) shade the bride's way. Parton told Us Weekly, "If she ever decides to really go and do it, I'd love to be there!" Until we hear otherwise, we'll have a little more faith in the newly happy couple.

It starts early. First your 4-year-old daughter begins to refuse to wear that badass navy blue skull sweatshirt you thought would look so cute on her. "Girls don't wear blue. And girls definitely don't wear skulls," she says while a small part of you, the part that found your heavy metal haven at age 15, dies a little inside. Next, she's turning her nose up at the Thomas the Train toys her brother loves — the same ones she was obsessed with just one month before. Again, it's the same old song and dance: "Girls don't play with trains."

Moms and dads of little boys around preschool age will be familiar with similar declarations of gender knowledge — they'll suddenly possess so much "wisdom" you might wonder if they're moonlighting as child psychologists. Bring a doll to bed? Not anymore. Hug and kiss you or express their sadness to you while among peers? You might be disappointed to find them putting the brakes on that kind of emotional response a lot younger than you anticipated.

"Gender identity is generally formed by age 3 years," says licensed psychotherapist Mayra Mendez, Ph.D., a program coordinator for intellectual and developmental disabilities and mental health services at Providence Saint John's Child and Family Development Center. "The primary way in which young children learn about gender differences is through socialization experiences. Such experiences are external to the child’s self-image or identity but strongly influence perceptions, whether reality-based or distorted. Children generally prefer to join others with whom they identify, thus they join peers whom they perceive as having commonality and with whom they can share experiences and interests."

In other words, if almost every other girl in your daughter's preschool class is walking right past the bin of trucks to play house or dress-up, she is going to want to do the same thing, no matter how many times her parents tell her trucks are a gender-less toy. That doesn't mean peers are the sole source of gender knowledge and identity at this young and impressionable age — children pick up on gender cues through factors that include parental influences, peers, social information, media depictions and representations and interactions modeled by adults, Mendez says.

And it gets more complicated. How children relate to their gender has as much to do with nature as it does nurture. "Children also pick up on gender cues resulting from their own internal drives and preferences," Mendez says. "During early childhood development, children have the task of integrating their internal preferences with external societal expectations."

If all of this sounds depressing, particularly if you were hoping your cisgender daughter would grow up more in touch with her masculine side or your son would express his emotions more freely, rest assured it isn't a bad thing. Children learn through modeling, social engagement and interactions as they take in learning and apply information to make sense of the world, and it is perfectly natural and inherent to identify preferences and join with those that children experience as similar or familiar, Mendez says.

More: 7 totally unexpected things that happen when your kid starts kindergarten

"By identifying with their own gender, they are learning about themselves, gaining understanding of social norms, practicing application of those norms and discovering how they fit into society as they develop their own sense of self," Mendez says. "Since children are socialized in male/female role differences, it is important for them to experience gender-specific norms. Children learn social rules, tasks and behaviors from associations with peers and, more specifically, same-gender peers."

In fact, Mendez says, the one way you're guaranteed to raise a firecracker who defies societal norms about gender is by first teaching her the rules she can break. "The learning of how to behave is externally learned, and the rules of social conformity must be learned before a child can exercise independent thought and decision-making regarding alternative behavioral choices," Mendez says. "The developmental task of young children is to learn, build a strong foundation of behaviors and later take the tool kit of learned norms and behaviors and modify, change or substitute independent choices."

Maybe you can't help yourself from snapping back about pink and blue and trucks and dolls, but Mendez says a more effective approach to handling this might be to help children learn gender role norms and help them integrate into social expectations. First and foremost, encourage them to explore and engage with both genders in a positive way to reinforce their sense of appreciation and respect for themselves and others. Then, chill out a bit, and let them figure it out themselves — when they feel supported and loved by their primary caretakers, they will.

More: I wish I could take back all the times I told my sons to 'man up'

"When parents reinforce gender separation concepts, such as specific colors for girls and certain sports for boys, they promote stereotypes and biases that are not conducive to respectful collaboration or gender integration," Mendez says. "When parents promote strong egalitarian gender values, they instill in children the knowledge needed later in life to make choices and decisions that are gender-neutral."

Musical names for baby boys that hit just the right note

Musical names for baby boys are a great way to bestow your love of music upon your child. And while musical baby names for boys aren't as readily apparent as they seem to be for girls, there are still plenty of music-based names for your little maestro.

You won't find girly musical baby names here, like Aria and Allegro — these boy names aren't super melodious, but they are all definitely artsy and musical in nature. Thankfully, there are many areas of musical inspiration you can turn to for a music-themed baby boy name.

MoreHappy baby girl names that will make people smile

You're not going to name your boy Saxophone or Tuba, but there are a few musical instruments that do make interesting baby names. Banjo may sound a little out there, 'tis true, but that didn't stop Rachel Griffiths from naming her little boy Banjo Patrick in 2003. Other instrument-based baby names include Axe (another term for a guitar) and Cornet, which is a brass instrument similar to a trumpet. We also can't forget Reed, which has been a strong baby name for years — and is also a critical component of many woodwind instruments, such as the clarinet.

But the musical influences don't stop there. We've examined different pieces of music to bring a bright collection of harmonious baby names that come from the staff of sheet music itself to some of the gods who presided over music in ancient times.

Whether you love music or are just looking for a unique breath of baby-name inspiration, check out these marvelous musical baby names for boys.

A rose water grapefruit cocktail that smells as good as it tastes

Rose water is a love-it-or-hate-it ingredient. You either appreciate the delicate floral notes or it makes you feel like you've been punched in the face with your grandmother's perfume. It's a fine line. A subtle amount of rose water can transform baked goods, jam, ice cream and, of course, cocktails.

The first time I fell in love with rose water was at Balaboosta in New York City. I ordered the knafeh for dessert — a Middle Eastern cheesecake made with thin shreds of phyllo dough. It was served with this delicate rose water ice cream and topped with pistachios. I promptly ordered a bottle of rose water and began plotting ways to use it.

Rose water grapefruit cocktail recipe

The tart, citrusy grapefruit juice balances out the rose water in a beautiful way in this cocktail. A little goes a long way here, so if you're new to the rose water game, maybe start with a 1/4 teaspoon. If you are not a grapefruit fan, try subbing lemon juice or orange juice.

Serves 1

Ingredients

  • 1-1/2 ounces vodka
  • 1-1/2 ounces fresh grapefruit juice
  • 1 ounce honey
  • 1/2 teaspoon rose water
  • splash of Campari
  • 4 ounces club soda
  • lemon peel for garnish

Directions

  1. Mix vodka, grapefruit juice, honey and rose water in a cocktail shaker.
  2. Pour over ice and top with club soda and a splash of Campari.
  3. Garnish with lemon peel.

Stop worrying about a reconciliation — Jennifer Garner's happy with the way things are

Jennifer Garner isn’t worried about the rumors that surround her family. While everyone else is wondering if she and Ben Affleck are going to get back together or not, she's focused on the most important thing — her family. Specifically, Garner and Affleck have made a point of creating a family environment despite their divorce.

Jennifer Garner Today Show

Jennifer Garner Today Show

Garner stopped by The Today Show to talk about her new movie and touched on her unconventional relationship with Affleck. She said, “We are definitely a modern family. We’re doing really well.”

More: In the best news of the day, Ben Affleck and Jennifer Garner aren't over for good

Their family — Affleck and Garner and their three kids, Violet, Seraphina and Samuel — recently took a bonding trip in London, which of course sparked reconciliation rumors. But Garner insisted it was just about the memories for the kids.

She said, “Ben was working in London on Justice League, and I felt like, well, the kids should have that experience. And he and I are great friends and we just all went en masse."

Now that she has made it abundantly clear that the exes aren’t getting back together, it’s time to let that go. We can all focus our energy on celebrating the family that they’re working hard to create now.

More: Oh please, there's no way Jennifer Garner would take back Ben Affleck

Affleck and Garner’s dedication to each other as co-parents and to their children is incredible. It takes a lot of open communication and trust to dissolve a romantic relationship but still maintain a close friendship in order to give your kids the best life possible.

Garner doesn’t see why anyone would do it any differently. She told The Today Show, “It has to be that way.”

It’s much easier to stick through the hard or uncomfortable times when you decide there’s no other option but to continue functioning as a family — even if you’re no longer in those traditional family roles.

We applaud both Garner and Affleck for being mature and thoughtful. And certainly, their kids will thank them for it one day as well.

DWTS' Kym Johnson was so hot at her wedding, she literally caught on fire

You know how wedding planners always say to expect one small fire to happen on your wedding day? Usually, that's a metaphor — like someone bringing a plus-one without asking or showing up in shorts when you specifically requested black tie. But for former Dancing With the Stars partners and newlyweds Kym Johnson and Robert Herjavec, it was all too real. The couple's Los Angeles wedding was this close to being a disaster.

More: Surprise! Kym Johnson & Robert Herjavec got married & the wedding was fabulous

The train of Johnson's gorgeous Monique Lhuillier dress caught fire as she walked down the aisle, the couple explains to People. (Brides, can you imagine anything more horrifying?) She trailed her dress over a candle on her way down the aisle and caught the flame, but thankfully a guest thought quickly and stomped it out before true catastrophe struck.

Here's a sign that this couple is built to last: Herjavec and Johnson are already laughing about the incident. “We smelled something and we thought, is someone having a barbecue?” Herjavec told People. “Then we realized that Kym’s dress was on fire!”

“I almost went up in flames!” said Johnson. “Thank God my man of honor stomped it out with his foot. But underneath my dress is completely singed." And thank God for layers and layers of burn-covering tulle.

Apparently there are qualifications to be a feminist & Sarah Jessica Parker doesn't meet them

$

Sarah Jessica Parker knows how to ruffle feathers. When she said she’s not a feminist, many women were confused and a little bit shocked, but there’s no reason to fear. She’s still on #TeamEquality, she just doesn’t use the word feminist because she doesn’t think she qualifies. She wants to go beyond feminism.

She told Marie Claire, "I am not a feminist. I don't think I qualify. I believe in women and I believe in equality, but I think there is so much that needs to be done that I don't even want to separate it anymore. I'm so tired of separation. I just want people to be treated equally."

Amen.

More: Sarah Jessica Parker reveals what terrifies her most about raising daughters

For a woman who carried an insanely successful show for years, you might assume that Parker doesn’t deal with the pay gap and missed opportunities because she’s a woman. But discrimination doesn’t care how successful you are, it happens to every woman. And she's sick of it.

Parker said, "I would like all of that nonsense to end. I would like women to get paid for the value of their contributions, not by old-fashioned ideas about gender.”

She continued, “Jennifer Lawrence deserves every bit as much as her male counterpart. It's indisputable. Emma Watson is an amazing young woman, and it's important for her to talk about women's issues. She isn't concerned about herself. Women are paying the bills, getting it done, getting the kids here and there. The more we address that, we are all going to be better."

More: 15 Emma Watson quotes that every woman should read

The problem, of course, with Parker’s statement is that Marie Claire is a women’s magazine. Women already know we’re kicking ass and deserve the fair recognition and pay for what we’re contributing in every industry. We have to get this message of equality for everyone in front of men and those people who believe in the old-fashioned roles of gender and capabilities.

Maybe Parker is onto something, though — to have all the same agendas as a feminist but not the name so people never see your message coming. She really is brilliant.

We're not knocking the OG, s'mores. The classic will live long as No. 1 in our hearts. But sometimes you want a little variety with your chocolate-marshmallow-graham cracker situation. So here are two fun twists worth trying. S'mores pops are so birthday party-ready. I can see those going home with kids in glassine bags. And s'mores in a cup is basically single-serve chocolate-marshmallow nachos. Hell yes, why am I not making that for myself right now?

Yields 12

Prep time: 15 minutes | Inactive time: 5 minutes | Total: 20 minutes

Ingredients:

  • 2 (1.55-ounce) Hershey's Milk Chocolate Bars
  • 1 teaspoon shortening (do not use butter, margarine, spread or oil)
  • 12 large marshmallows
  • 1/4 cup graham cracker crumbs
  • 12 lollipop sticks

Directions:

  1. Line a cookie sheet or tray with waxed paper. Remove the wrappers from the chocolate bars, and break them into pieces.
  2. In a small microwave-safe bowl, place the chocolate and shortening. Microwave at medium (50 percent) for 1 minute, and stir. If necessary, microwave at medium for an additional 10 seconds at a time, stirring after each heating, until the chocolate is melted and the mixture is smooth when stirred.
  3. One at a time, dip about half of each marshmallow into the melted chocolate, and shake off any excess chocolate. Immediately sprinkle the chocolate portion with graham cracker crumbs, or dip it into the graham cracker crumbs for heavier coating. Place the uncoated side on the prepared sheet. Push a lollipop stick through the top of the chocolate about halfway into marshmallow. Repeat the procedure with the remaining marshmallows. Refrigerate for about 5 minutes or until firm. Store in a cool, dry place.

My adopted kids are never going to know how much they 'cost'

$

I’m the mom to three: one from the vagina, two from China. My “vagina child” is 23, and I mostly say this just to mess with her, because it just makes you cringe when your mom throws out the V-word, doesn’t it?

But seriously.

More: My 5-year-old's friend is transgender, and he's doing just fine, thanks

My adopted kids are 6 years old. They’re 4 months apart, not biologically related. That trips people up sometimes, believe it or not. They were adopted separately at ages 2 and 3, respectively. We talk about adoption openly with our kids. We let their questions guide our way and use things they say organically as conversation starters.

Lately they’ve been asking if they lived in my tummy or what they were like as babies. I gently explain that they lived in another mommy’s tummy and that I didn’t get to meet them until they were a little older, and they’re having a hard time wrapping their heads around that. They don’t remember a time when I wasn’t their mom. It’s both endearing and scary to see the little wheels turning in their heads. I know the harder questions and the more painful conversations are not far in the future.

It’s not our intention to keep adoption information, but we believe in giving them information as they grow and mature… and yes, at our discretion. We’re pretty open about adoption, but there’s one area we don’t plan to address in the immediate future: adoption costs.

More: Parents criticized for letting young son watch Dad's parachute-free sky dive

We all know adoptive parents don’t like the “how much did it cost to adopt” or, worse, the “how much did he cost” question. We all know that, right? We don’t like questions about cost because they’re often nosy and inappropriate, but one of the main reasons is that we don’t want to hear this question:

“Mommy, how much did I cost?”

Ever.

At some point, kids understand that stuff costs money. They might be told they can’t have this or that because it’s too expensive. We might have to explain why we don’t have a pool in our backyard or go on four vacations a year, and that’s fine. That’s part of growing up and learning, but I don’t want them growing up thinking about the fact that their dad and I had to pay money for their adoptions. I don’t want them to see themselves as commodities. Objects. The last thing I want them to feel is that they were “things” we saved up for. I want them to see themselves as just my kids. Because they are.

So get this:

We spent $7,000 on an antique Gothic dining room set. It was a splurge, and we have a love-hate with that expenditure. The chairs are cool-looking, but they’re uncomfortable. We had to spend an extra $500 to have the damn thing fumigated because it came with antique Gothic woodworms.

Also, our dishwasher crapped out while my husband was out of town, and I ordered a new one without consulting him. I know zip about dishwashers and got weaseled into buying a shitty dishwasher for top dollar.

More: I wish I could take back all the times I told my sons to 'man up'

Am I comparing our adoption costs to furniture and appliances? Of course not, but my point is that how much stuff costs is discussed openly at our house. Our kids have heard us gripe about the dining room set. They’ve heard my husband bitch at me about my solo dishwasher purchase. We talk about what we “can and can’t afford,” and we buy a shit-ton of K-Cups when they go on sale at Costco. Our kids know about money and that money buys things.

I just don’t want them to see themselves as those things.

If you’re an adoptive parent and you freely discuss adoption costs in front of your children, maybe you shouldn’t. You might think that saying, “It cost $35,000 to adopt Gabrielle, but she’s worth every bit of the sacrifice and penny-pinching, because she belongs in our family, and we’d do it all over again,” is a positive affirmation, but it’s not. Saying that reinforces that Gabrielle is a commodity.

Adoption is complicated. These kids experience all kinds of emotions as they navigate their way through their birth stories.

More: 18 freebies little kids can earn just for going to school

Will our kids ask questions about the costs of their adoption when they’re older? Maybe. When they’re mature enough to process all sides of the story, I don’t intend to withhold anything they want to know about their adoption stories, but for now, they’re children trying to comprehend that the woman who gave birth to them isn’t the woman raising them. That’s hard to grasp when you’re 6.

Every family approaches these things differently, and privacy means different things to different people. But... The next time you openly mention your child’s adoption cost — especially when you do it in front of them — ask yourself what value it adds.

Discussions of cost add nothing, at least not when your children are young.

Andy Cohen grilled Jules Wainstein about her divorce, and it was so uncomfortable

$

Andy Cohen loves to use Watch What Happens Live for two things — throwing shade and digging up gossip. It’s usually lighthearted and funny, but not with Jules Wainstein. Cohen brought Real Housewives of New York stars Wainstein and Dorinda Medley on the show to get some dirt, but it was more uncomfortable than anything.

Jules Wainstein divorce

Jules Wainstein divorce

Of course Cohen brought up Wainsten’s divorce. He served up as many specific questions as he could, but Wainstein was only giving him short, two word answers. When he asked if she and her soon-to-be ex-husband were living together, she said, “That’s true.” But confirmed that they are definitely getting divorced.

More: Jules Wainstein's divorce drama may not be enough to keep her on RHONY

When Cohen pressed for details about the alleged affair, things got so uncomfortable, Wainstein had Medley answer for her. Medley confirmed that the Housewives did know the other woman, but that Wainstein was in the dark about the affair the whole time.

When Cohen asked if Wainstein ever suspected anything, Medley said about Wainstein, "We're very close. We would have had one of those late night conversations where she's like, 'Oh my god, I think XYZ.'"

Whether it’s because of the legal battle or the heartbreaking nature of the subject, it’s obvious that Wainstein is still not ready to open up about it. She was visibly shaken by the questions and the whole topic.

More: How I knew RHONY's Jules Wainstein was headed for divorce

It’s interesting to see what Cohen will and will not press his Housewives to answer. On reunion shows, he’s infamous for favoring some cast members enough that he’ll back down pretty quickly from a sensitive subject. But when he isn’t favoring one of the women, he’s pressing until he can get some kind of exclusive answer.

On the one hand, you know that the Housewives trust Cohen and would prefer to talk to him over anyone. But on the other hand, he should know them all better than to force them to talk about something they don’t want to discuss.

More: RHONY's Jules versus Michael Wainstein: Is the divorce going to get ugly?

We’ll have to wait and see how he acts during the reunion special for this current show. Hopefully, Wainstein will be in a stronger place by then.
