Channing Tatum to cast his spell for a second stripper movie

0
0
Ladies, keep those libidos warm. With Channing Tatum talking about a Magic Mike sequel, it won't be long before we'll all be heading back to the theater for an encore performance. So listen up, Hollywood execs... we've got a few pointers for making the follow-up flick even hotter than the last.

Channing Tatum at the Magic Mike UK PremiereAnother stripper-with-a-heart-of-gold storyline

Despite what my husband thinks, more went on in Magic Mike than a bunch of gratuitous a**-shaking. At the risk of sounding silly, the storyline about the soft-hearted, hard-working stripper tugged at our heartstrings. Guy has dream, guy can't afford dream, guy goes out and works his butt off to support said dream. I mean, c'mon, nobody blinked when Katherine Heigl's character on Grey's Anatomy copped to flashing her goodies to pay off her massive medical school loans.

The notion behind the motion

Having said that, we would've loved to have seen certain plot points fleshed out a bit more — even if it meant seeing a little less tanned-and-taught flesh onscreen. Channing Tatum 's character shook his moneymaker every night in order to get his custom furniture business off the ground, but the furniture itself got about as much screentime as Matthew McConaughey's t-shirt. We would've loved a happy ending that included his furniture company coming to fruition.

Channing, Channing, and more Channing

When it comes to casting, I think we can all agree: Channing made movie magic as "Magic Mike." Not only is he one tasty morsel of man candy, but he also has enough acting chops to keep us interested even when his clothes are on. Bonus? The boy can downright dance. Sure, we drooled when he gyrated in the group ensembles, but when he hit the floor for his solo — well, we just had to say daaaaaayum . We'd like more Channing, with a side of Channing, in the follow-up. Please?

Magic Mike trailer: Channing Tatum strips down >>

Less dialogue and more dancing for Matthew McConaughey... and none of either for Tarzan

Perhaps Matthew McConaughey's role should be relegated to less talky, more shaky-shaky. Sorry, Matt. We still love you, but your character was a sleaze and, quite frankly, looked as though he'd been hanging out on the beach beating his bongos and forgoing showers for far too long. When you finally did dance, we almost forgot how contrived the rest of your performance felt. But, hey, chin up — at least you weren't the creepy Tarzan stripper. Ain't nobody fallin' asleep to fantasies of that bearded weirdo!

Cocktail hour and cardboard cutouts

One thing is for sure, regardless of who else gets cast or how the story unfolds, throngs of women will undoubtedly file into theaters nationwide to catch the sequel. Other than a Tupperware convention or a sidewalk sale for Neiman Marcus, you'll be hard-pressed to find so many women crammed into a space. So be a sport, will you? Appease us. Have a couple of scantily clad busboys serve us some cocktails. Give us hand fans for when we get flushed , but have the fan portion consist of cardboard cutouts of white-hot Channing and his incendiary costars.

Just do us this solid and make the next Magic Mike even more magical than the first. We can handle it, we promise. Because, when those closing credits roll, we have to leave Channing's grind and return to the daily kind.

Jennifer Garner reveals her post-baby workout plan

How Jen stays happy & healthy

Proud mother of three Jennifer Garner gives back at Frigidaire’s Save the Children event and shares with SheKnows how she keeps herself and her family healthy.

Jennifer Garner looked happy and healthy Wednesday as she donated her time to help the Save the Children charity at Griffith Park during Frigidaire’s "Adventures in Clean" event.

"I feel more compelled the longer I have children," Garner told SheKnows. "I feel like my kids are so privileged, not just financially… in books, in literature, in libraries, in people who believe in them and encouragement. It makes me more and more driven."

Garner and her family certainly have been blessed. In February, she and hubby Ben Affleck welcomed their first son, Samuel, to the clan, joining daughters Violet and Seraphina.

Jennifer Garner with daughter SeraphinaPost-baby fitness

And Garner is well on her way to dropping those post-baby pounds. The actress told us she works out every day with a personal trainer at home.

"I start my day with Valerie Waters every day that I can," Garner said. "We’re not in a fancy gym, we’re just in a room in my home. We use 5- to 8-lb weights and do a little cardio. I try to go for a run when I can, and hope for the best."

And though she may not be in as tip-top shape as she was in her Alias days, Garner says the key to staying healthy for her now is moderation.

A healthy balance

"One secret is to not freak out and not go so hard-core that I can’t sustain it, because I’ve done that before and it doesn’t work for me," Garner told us.

"Time with your girlfriends is the most regenerative thing."

Part of that healthy balance is getting in her guilty pleasures with girlfriends every once in a while.

"After everyone is in bed, I’ll go to a girlfriend’s house and have a glass of wine, and chocolate, and just dish," Garner said. "Then I switch to tea because I have to drive home! Time with your girlfriends is the most regenerative thing."

Whole foods

At home, Garner keeps the family healthy by stocking the fridge with whole foods from her local farmers market.

"One thing I always do is right around 3 o’clock when everyone starts to get hungry, I make sure there are cut up vegetables out on the counter," Garner said. "There are carrots, bell peppers, sugar snap peas, lots of fresh vegetables. You have to have the food out in front of them."

Finding happiness

But the most important thing to staying healthy, Garner said, is a positive outlook.

"My mom taught me that your happiness is your own responsibility and you have to find happiness in small moments," she told us. "You can’t wait for it to be big and sweeping. I do have a happy big sweeping life, but I really find happiness in the small moments."

Celebrity kids' style

Don't you wish you could dress your kid like a celebri-tot? Whether or not you can afford the high-priced children's boutiques, you can nab style inspiration from Hollywood's hottest tots and create your own similar ensemble. Snatch style tips from our list of the top nine most fashionable kids in Tinsletown.
Kingston Rossdale
Kingston Rossdale, the eldest son of Gwen Stefani and Gavin Rossdale, is the original California kid. He’s often seen sporting nothing more than surfer-style board shorts or trendy styles like bright colored jeans. Copy Kingston’s surfer boy meets punk rocker style by combining his laid back style with edgy, trendy accessories. Think cut-offs, color blocking and Vans or Converse.
Honor Warren
If there is one celebri-tot whose style mirrors her own mom’s the most, we’d have to say it’s Honor, daughter of Jessica Alba and Cash Warren. The little lady sports casual yet classic styles like a denim vest paired with a simple dress and ballerina flats or high tops with a floral romper topped with a white jean jacket. Her look can be easily duplicated with simple pieces from the kids’ department of Target, Kohl’s or Old Navy.
Liam McDermott
This kid is a stud! We love the hair, the shades, the nail polish! To dress your tot like the son of Tori Spelling & Dean McDermott, check out dressy, trendy clothes from a place like The Children’s Place. Add some edge to the dressy look by untucking the button-down shirt and adding sliders and dark sunglasses. Don’t forget the piece de resistance — the tot faux hawk.

Copy Honor’s cute hairstyle >>

Skyler Berman
This baby has a style all his own and one we’re sure costs a fortune since his mom is style maven Rachel Zoe. To mock his look, look for preppy, trendy styles — and accessorizing is a must. Skyler always rocks one unique piece, like a fedora or moccasins.
Suri Cruise

Gorgeous Suri Cruise is definitely a glamour girl. She loves a beautiful frilly dress, high heels , fancy purses and fur! To copy Suri’s look, accessorize with headbands or ribbons in the hair.

Stella McDermott
Stella is a little lady with a little bit of flair! She rocks sweet pink dresses, but also loves to accessorize with layered necklaces and even feathers in her hair. What a trendsetter.

Check out more tips to dress your daughter like Suri >>

Levi McConaughey
This handsome budding dude totally takes after dear old dad, Matthew McConaughey. Just like dad, Levi looks equally at home whether he’s rocking swim trunks on the beach or a suit to church on Sunday. Recreating Levi’s look is all about dressing for the occasion.
Violet Affleck
We love this all-American girl and her versatile style. Mary Janes with white socks are crucial when stealing Violet Affeck’s style. She wears plenty of pretty — but not too frilly — dresses and isn’t afraid to accessorize with a cute purse .
Nahla Aubry
Dad Gabriel Aubry and Mom Halle Berry definitely passed their gorgeous genes on to daughter Nahla but also their fashion sense. Nahla likes to be comfortable and cute in casual clothes like this one-piece romper paired with a light sweater and strappy sandals.

Levi is going to be a big brother — again! Mom Camila is pregnant with baby #3 >>

10 Cool facts about the Olympics that your kids will love

Olympic fun facts
Olympic rings

Do you know the meaning of the Olympic rings or why they are different colors? Which country has the most Summer Games medals? Did you know that the gold medals aren't actually made of gold?

Get to know the Olympics

Your kids will love these fun facts about the Olympics and so will you!

1

Go Team USA

The U.S. leads the Summer Olympics in medals, holding nearly 2,200! Think we can continue to hold that record in the Summer 2012 Games? Keep count with your kids as the medals roll in!

2

The Olympic rings

Everyone knows the Olympic rings, but do you know what they're for? Each ring represents a different region of the world and each ring is colored to represent the flags of the nations in that region.

3

North-bound only

The Olympic Winter Games have only been held in the Northern Hemisphere. No skiing in South Africa, apparently.

4

The golden four

Only four athletes in the history of the Olympics have won medals in both the Winter and Summer Games and one of those was an American! Eddie Eagan won the gold metal in Antwerp in 1920 for boxing and another gold metal in Lake Placid in 1932 for the bobsleigh.

5

Faux gold medals

The Olympic gold medals haven't been made out of solid gold since 1912. They must, however, be plated with six grams of gold, but the rest of the composites in the medals are left up to the host city to determine. The silver medals also have strict composition requirements.

6

Back to London

London, where this year's Summer Games will be held, was host to the first Olympic Opening Ceremonies in 1908.

7

A very Disney Olympics

In 1960, Walt Disney was the head of the committee for the Olympic Opening Ceremonies, held in Squaw Valley, California, near Lake Tahoe. Can you even imagine what a magical ceremony that would have been?

8

Go girls!

Women were not allowed to compete in the Olympic Games until 1900 and we've been holding our own ever since!

9

A royal marathon

Marathon runners will love to know that the extra 0.2 miles at the end of a marathon was originated at the Olympics. In 1908, the Olympics were being held in London and the organizers tacked on another 385 yards to the already established 26-mile run to make sure the Royal Family could properly see the finish line.

10

Tres chic awards

For the 1900 Olympics, held in Paris, winners were given paintings instead of medals, which the French believed were far more valuable.

And then there was one: Jennifer Lopez also leaves Idol

0

Jennifer Lopez teased Thursday that she was considering an exit from American Idol. Well, it looks like her mind was already made up: She confirmed the news to Ryan Seacrest on Friday morning.

Jennifer Lopez apparently needs more time to hang out with her boy toy, Casper Smart: She's following Steven Tyler by announcing her official exit from American Idol.

"You dread a conversation like this," she told Ryan Seacrest on his morning radio show. "I honestly feel like the time has come that I have to get back to doing the other things that I do, that I've put kind of on hold because I like Idol so much," she said.

"I just don't feel like I can be there every single day all the time like I have been for the past two years," she added, citing the responsibilities of her career and life as mother of twins Max and Emme.

"It sounds like you've made up your mind," Seacrest's co-host Ellen K. said.

"Yeah," Lopez replied.

The singer is busy: She has a co-headlining tour with Enrique Iglesias set to kick off U.S. dates this weekend, and she also has a voice part in the upcoming Ice Age: Continental Drift. However, we almost feel like Lopez doesn't want to risk her star power on Idol — its ratings continue to decline in the face of competition like Adam Levine and Christina Aguilera's The Voice and the Britney Spears and Demi Lovato-helmed The X Factor.

Tyler's reason for leaving? Uh, we guess it's about Aerosmith.

"After some long…hard…thoughts…I’ve decided it’s time for me to let go of my mistress American Idol before she boils my rabbit. I strayed from my first love, Aerosmith, and I’m back — but instead of begging on my hands and knees, I’ve got two fists in the air and I’m kicking the door open with my band," the always flamboyant Tyler said Thursday in a statement.

Rumors have swirled that his band mates gave Tyler an ultimatum: It's either the show, or us.

The one remaining judge is show mainstay Randy Jackson, though it's questionable whether he'll be back for more. The show might want to bring in all new blood to shake things up — and both Adam Lambert and Mariah Carey have been rumored to be in the running.

As for the third spot? Blogger Perez Hilton wants a spot.

"#PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol #PerezForIdol," Hilton tweeted on Friday. "Can you imagine it now: me and @MariahCarey? THAT would be must watch TV! #PerezForIdol."

We're down with Carey and Lambert, but Perez? Not into it. At. All.

Life after Twilight: Kellan Lutz, Jackson Rathbone move on

0

SheKnows caught up with two of the hottest vamps this side of Breaking Dawn, Kellan Lutz and Jason Rathbone, to bid goodbye to Twilight at Comic-Con and hear about the next phase in their careers.

With thousands of screaming fans greeting the cast of The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 in San Diego for the last Comic-Con — the fantasy/super hero conference that launched the start of the Twilight fan craze just four years ago — the mood was bittersweet as we bid goodbye to the vampire phenomenon that swept the globe.

Twilight crew bids goodbye to its vampy days >>

Two of the hottest vamps in the series, Kellan Lutz and Jackson Rathbone, stopped to talk to SheKnows about what’s next for their careers after this amazing and very unique experience.

Kellan loves to Tweet

“It was very overwhelming the first year,” says Lutz, who plays Emmett Cullen in the Twilight series. Due to star in the new action adventure Tarzan, out in 2013, this 27-year-old actor says his life will never be the same thanks to Twilight. He’s thankful for the fans and says that if he’s on Twitter, he will definitely tweet back. That’s good news, ladies. Give Kellan a shout-out, and you never know, he might be online and answer you. We’re definitely going to give it a try.

Twilight "animal sex" cut out of Breaking Dawn >>

No loincloth for this Tarzan!

“I just finished Tarzan which we shot in Munich,” says Lutz, who spent a good amount time pre-shoot working on his quad muscles for fear he’d have to be in a loincloth like all the other Tarzans.

He tells the story of beefing up. “I’m working out my legs, trying to get my legs in shape…” he says. “But I didn’t have to do that, I just had to wear a Power Ranger-esque suit with some dots on my face in a non-jungle environment with 60 cameras all around me.” Wow! That’s some King of the Jungle. Can’t wait to see it.

Jackson is afraid of spiders

Lutz’s partner-in-crime, Jackson Rathbone, who plays Jasper Hale in the series, has a lot on his plate post-Twilight as well. He and his girlfriend, Sheila Hafsadi, who he met on tour with his band 100 Monkeys, welcomed a baby boy on July 5. Jackson is a dad for less than a week, and he still comes out to greet his Twilight fans. That’s some dedication.

Standing on the balcony of the Hard Rock Hotel in downtown San Diego, we could hear screaming fans eleven stories below. After peering over the balcony, we asked if Jackson was afraid of heights. Nope, not this fearless vamp, although he did admit to being afraid of one thing. Spiders.

Fatherhood made someone a softy

“I don’t like killing them,” the 27-year-old actor says. “I like to try to capture them and escort them outside.”

Twilight's Jackson Rathbone is a new dad! >>

After Rathbone escorts a few spiders out the door, he plans to spend the summer being a dad to his new baby and writing his passion project. What’s the script about? “It’s old myths that I put in a modern context, and it’s set in New York,” he says. And, it’s not just writing that has inspired this young actor. He also wants to direct.

Despite the spiders, Tarzan and the new baby, we suspect the dark and mysterious world of Twilight will always hold a close place in the hearts of these guys. But just to be sure, maybe you should tweet to double check. Give some fan love and you could get something back.

The Twilight Saga: Breaking Dawn Part 2 releases in theaters November 16.

Sure, you want to lose the pregnancy pounds, but what about getting your pelvic floor back in shape too? Learn why it's crucial to get strength back down there — your partner will be glad you do, too.
The most important postpartum exercise

Psst! Do your kegels

Sure, you want to lose the pregnancy pounds, but what about getting your pelvic floor back in shape, too?

Learn why it's crucial to get strength back down there — your partner will be glad you do, too.

Get to know your after-birth vagina and pelvic floor

Women's health physical therapist, Cindi A. Prentiss,  MBA, PT, OCS, Cert. MDT, LMT, explains, "The muscles and tissues of the pelvic floor may become overstretched and weak during childbirth. During delivery, the perineum may feel numb with bruising and soreness, especially if you’ve had a large baby, tore the perineum or had an episiotomy. A weakened pelvic floor can lead to incontinence, decreased sexual enjoyment or sagging of the bladder and uterus onto the pelvic muscles."

Take a tour of your postpartum body>>

If you have a C-section, it doesn't mean you're out of the woods. Prentiss explains, "The weight of the pregnant uterus, along with hormones that relax the ligaments may create pelvic floor weakness."

Meet your new best friend, the Kegel

Kegels are the first exercise you can do immediately after delivery.

"Imagine that you don’t want to pee or pass gas," Prentiss explains. "Kegels are considered an isometric exercise, and contraction of the pelvic floor muscles need not be more than 50 percent of your strength. Utilizing accessory muscles, such as the inner thighs and buttocks, can also help strengthen the pelvic floor. Don’t freak out if you can’t feel the muscles working or are unable to stop the flow of urine. Continue to try!"

Try these strengthening exercises

Prentiss recommends doing clam shells and ball squeezes.

To do a clam shell:

  1. Lie on your side with your knees in the fetal position and your back against a wall.
  2. Slowly lift the top knee up — like a clam opening — while leaving your feet together.
  3. Slowly return to starting position. Perform 10 reps. You may progress to a resistance band, as you feel stronger.
  4. Perform a Kegel while the legs are apart.
  5. Relax the pelvic floor while the legs are together.

To do ball squeezes:

Prentiss says this exercise can be done lying on your back with the knees straight, lying with the knees bent or while sitting:

  1. Place a soft, small ball or pillow between your knees and gently squeeze your knees together. Hold for five seconds, while performing a Kegel at the same time.
  2. Relax five seconds. Perform 10 repetitions.
  3. Progress to holding 10 seconds and relaxing 10 seconds.

Did we already say do your Kegels?

During the weeks following childbirth, "Perform Kegels throughout the day, at red lights, when a commercial comes on the TV or when the phone rings," Prentiss says.

"Vary the types of Kegels you perform. 'Quick flicks' are quick contraction/quick release Kegels that simulate a cough or sneeze. 'Elevator Kegels' are pelvic floor contractions at various intensities."

Not only will Kegels help your vagina get back to normal, this exercise will help other things get back to normal, too.

Prentiss adds, "Performing Kegels during intercourse can help strengthen as well as increase sexual enjoyment."

Abby Wambach

Tips from a soccer pro

Abby Wambach, professional soccer player and gold medalist, feels very strongly about nutrition and leading a healthy lifestyle. Read on to find out her thoughts and tips on healthy eating.

Abby Wambach will soon compete in the 2012 summer games for another gold medal, something she is preparing for both on and off the field. SheKnows had the chance to talk with Abby about the upcoming summer games, healthy eating and nutrition, and how you can win a private soccer clinic with her.

Carbs, carbs, carbs

"Human beings need carbohydrates. It's our fuel. It would be like getting into a car with no gas."

One of the first things Abby Wambach stressed is how important carbohydrates are to our bodies. "Human beings need carbohydrates. It's our fuel. It would be like getting into a car with no gas. It's the energy that makes you go," she says. To further her point, Abby continues, "Carbohydrates are an important factor for any person on the planet. You can't go on without carbohydrates in your body in order for your body to function like you want it to." Even after a small amount of exercise, she recommends refueling your body with the carbohydrates that it needs to keep going.

As for current diet trends, she says, "Some diets work for some people, and some diets don't. But the truth is, and this is the basic key factor that people forget is that nothing comes easy. If it's too good to be true, it's probably not going to last for a long time."

On the field

"Being a professional athlete, my nutrition is probably one of the most essential ingredients as to what makes me good on the field, and sometimes what doesn't make me so great on the field," Abby says. On the field, she easily loses 50-percent of her carbohydrate stores during a match, so it is necessary to replenish those stores before and after a match. Without the proper amount of carbohydrates in her system she says she probably wouldn't make it through warm-ups.

Check out Misty May-Treanor's diet secrets to look like a beach volleyball pro >>

"Being a professional athlete, my nutrition is probably one of the most essential ingredients as to what makes me good on the field and, sometimes, what doesn't make me so great on the field."

wineIndulgence and moderation

Like everyone, Abby Wambach likes to indulge, but only rarely. When she's not training, she'll eat a burger and fries or have a glass of red wine… the key here is moderation. "I'm not saying I never indulge, but you make it a life choice and you make it a way of your being, so that when you do indulge, it is a very rare occasion," she says.

"Giving yourself a break every so often is important, especially when you live a mostly nutritious lifestyle."

Abby offers this as her biggest piece of advice to those trying to maintain a healthy lifestyle: "Giving yourself a break every so often is important, especially when you live a mostly nutritious lifestyle. It's not easy to say no to every indulgence that's put in front of your nose, to always be the strong-minded person, to order something super healthy on the menu. What is easy is to give yourself a break every so often, and not take life so seriously." Abby does caution however, "What you do need to take seriously are the obesity rates that are climbing and make sure you don't become one of those statistics."

2012 summer games

With her focus on this year's summer games, Abby says it is a mental chore to prepare for that ultimate goal: the gold medal. She says that she is much more mindful of what she's putting into her system coming up to the event: "It allows me to say no to a lot more things than maybe if I weren't vying after a medal." For her, that means no sweets, no alcohol and no fast food. What makes the cut? Pure foods, which she says make her the best player she can be. While she recognizes that this regimen might not be for everyone, it is the choice she's happily making for her job and her ability to perform on the field. Watch Abby and the rest of the U.S. Women's National Soccer team this summer in London.

Alec Baldwin wants kids to read Walter the Farting Dog

0
0
Alec Baldwin wants kids to read more this summer, so he's released a list of books that all kids should be putting their noses in this summer. So, why did a farting dog make the list?

Alec Baldwin book recommendations

Newlywed Alec Baldwin is doing his best to transform his image from paparazzi boxer to serious artist. First, he switched his Twitter to focus on his work in the arts — and now he's contributed his picks to the second annual "Brooke's Best Books" list for kids, part of the Brooke Jackman Foundation.

As for his picks? Baldwin recommends two vastly different tomes: Little House on the Prairie by Laura Ingalls Wilder and Walter the Farting Dog by William Kotzwinkle and Glenn Murray.

Dogs and farts? Two of our favorite things. Of course, we had to learn more.

PETA gives Alec Baldwin a weird wedding gift >>

Turns out that the book is pretty popular with the toddler set and follows flatulent Walter as he tries to avoid the pound.

"Walter is a fine dog, except for one small problem: he has gas. He can't help it; it's just the way he is," reads the official synopsis. "Fortunately, the kids Billy and Betty love him regardless, but Father says he's got to go! Poor Walter, he's going to the dog pound tomorrow. And then, in the night, burglars strike. Walter has his chance to be a hero."

Rock of Ages or Flop of Ages? >>

The book is every getting the movie treatment — it's in development now and is tentatively scheduled for release sometime in 2013, according to Collider.com.

As for Baldwin? It sounds like he's spending a lot of the summer in the Hamptons with his new bride, bendy yoga instructor Hilaria Thomas. He apparently longs for the simpler life, according to some of his recent tweets.

"I'll take less followers and more freedom," he wrote on July 8.

Sorry Alec, don't think that's going to happen.

5 Stars who should hide out on Friday the 13th

0
0
Bad luck has been plaguing a few of our Hollywood favorites lately. Every day has been Friday the 13th for these wretched celebs. Here are five personalities who would be well-advised to sit this Friday the 13th out…

Tom CruiseTom Cruise

Yikes. Bad couple o’ weeks for Tommy Boy. He got “blindsided” with divorce papers from his now ex-wife Katie Holmes, Rock of Ages didn’t do so hot at the box office, he got painted as sort of a Scientology schizophrenic and spent his 50th birthday sans wife. If this is the kind of luck TC has been having lately, can you imagine what would happen if he stepped out today?

Tom Cruise's real life mission: Damage control >>

Usher

The last few days have ushered in some bad news for this R&B stage sensation. First Usher had to deal with a stalker who said that he was married to her! Uh, can you say restraining order? Then Monday greeted everyone with headlines that Usher’s stepson was left brain-dead after a jet-skiing accident! Today we suggest that Usher not operate any kind of heavy equipment. We hope he and his step-son have much better news in the days to come.

Justin Bieber

Wow, what a busy week for this beloved teen-girl idol. He got a speeding ticket and was sued for $9 million all in the same week! Poor guy. The lawsuit was filed by a concert-goer who said he suffered hearing damage. Someone’s ears were hurt as a result of a Justin Bieber concert? There’s a joke in there somewhere. We’ll leave it alone for now, since the Biebs has had a tough enough go of things lately. It's probably time for JB to disappear for a few days, and starting his break on Friday the 13th seems like as good of a time as any.

Is Justin headed for a Lohan-like meltdown? >>

Simon Cowell

When your show has four key players and two of them back out in the same week you may have hit a patch of bad luck. At a minimum you’ve got staffing issues. Jennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler are taking a pass on returning to American Idol for another season. At least that’s what is being reported. For all we know, Steven Tyler got the boot for allegedly sleeping with 4,000 women -- American Idol is a family program, after all! Maybe Jenny from the Block got kicked to the curb for being over-exposed and being on everyone’s last nerve. We may never know. All we can say is Simon may want to not take calls from Ryan Seacrest today.

Another year of Steven Tyler on American Idol? Dream on >>

Kristin Chenoweth

This unfortunate pint-sized doll was knocked cold when she was struck in the head by a piece of lighting equipment while on the set of The Good Wife last Wednesday. Ouch! This freak accident is not the first for Kristin. She was also injured at a pre-Broadway engagement, and again while rehearsing the Broadway revival of The Apple Tree. While on the set of Glee, she injured her back! Sheesh. Acting doesn’t really seem like a terribly dangerous line of work , but for Kristin it’s been nothing but a royal pain. She’s not yet out of the hospital. While we hope she makes a full recovery, we think it would be best if her doctors didn’t release her until Saturday the 14th!

Make a splash: Stay fit with swimming this summer

0
0
Staying fit doesn’t have to mean slogging away on the treadmill or sweating it out in a cardio class. Now that it’s summer and the heat is on, some of us are partial to hitting the pool as a way to burn calories and get our fitness fix. But just what does working out in the water have to offer? Quite a bit, as it turns out.

Woman swimmer in pool

To learn more about making the most of your time in the pool,  we turned to celebrity trainer and fitness expert Jay Cardiello. He shares his insights into the many benefits of water workouts and tips for revving up your swim sessions.

Swimming: Body benefits

Aside from making us feel great, swimming has many benefits that make us want to don our favorite suit and dive in -- and Cardiello shared seven of the most significant:

  • Increased muscle tone and conditioning
  • Increased cardiovascular endurance and conditioning
  • Increased flexibility and joint range of motion
  • Increased caloric burn and expenditure
  • Reduced cholesterol
  • Heightened emotional balance and stability
  • Decreased muscle stiffness and joint pain

Getting started: The ideal water workout

Quick tip: Try the Go Swim app to further improve your pool time. The handy app offers swimming tips, videos, drills, workouts and more to help keep you motivated.

Not sure where what to do once you dive in? Start with a slow swim anywhere from 200 to 400 meters to warm up -- a must if you want to get an effective water workout, says Cardiello. Next, pick a stroke you like and implement a fun interval training workout. “This will keep intensity high, while avoiding a burnout,” he advises. Try alternating between a faster stroke for two minutes and a slower pace for 45 to 60 seconds, for a total of 45 minutes. Perform a cool down by swimming a few laps at a leisurely pace and finish with some static stretching after you exit the pool.

Improve your pool time: Supplement your swimming

When you’re swimming for fitness it’s important to add other exercises that will help you in the water, Cardiello advises. He shares a few other supplemental moves that will help rev up your water workout this summer.

  • Core: Get your midsection in shape to support and maintain position throughout the stroke. Add planks, side planks and lower-back extensions to your strength training routine.
  • Posterior development: Build up your back region and posterior chain with lat pull-downs, seated and dumbbell rows, dead lifts and weighted step-ups.
  • Shoulders: Enhance shoulder strength with presses, reverse flys and internal and external shoulder rotations.
  • Proprioception work: Improve coordination, agility and strength in the pool with balance boards and wobble boards.

The main thing we like about the pool is the fun twist it adds to our weekly workout. Whether you have a pool, join a gym that has one or hit the local swimming hole, there are a whole host of reasons to dive in.

Sage Stallone, son of Sylvester, found dead in his home

The 36-year-old son of the Rocky star was found dead in his home earlier this afternoon.

Sylvester StalloneSad news tonight for a Hollywood icon.

Sylvester Stallone’s son was found dead in his home today. Sage Stallone was an aspiring actor and filmmaker.

"Sylvester Stallone is devastated and grief-stricken over the sudden loss of his son," said the actor's publicist Michelle Bega to msnbc.com. "His compassion and thoughts are with Sage's mother, Sasha."

Los Angeles police spokesman lieutenant Andy Neiman said that the case has been turned over to the coroner, but there are differing accounts as to what may have happened to Sage.

“Los Angeles police said they were dispatched to investigate a death at a home on Mulholland Terrace around 2:15 p.m. but could not confirm the person's identity or offer details,” said Fox News.

Neiman did say, however, that he was found after responding to a call for a “welfare check.”

“Friends and acquaintances had become concerned because they hadn't heard from Stallone in the past day,” Sage’s attorney George Braustein told MSNBC.

Sage had worked with his father on two previous movies, Rocky V and Daylight, and was the eldest of the Rocky star’s children.

Braustein said that Sage was working hard to gain a name for himself in the industry, and so hadn’t appeared in one of his father’s films since 1996. He had turned down the role of Rocky Balboa Jr. in the 2006 film Rocky Balboa because of his involvement in Grindhouse.

"We don't know any of the details but it must have been some sort of tragic accident. He was full of life and working on projects," Braunstein said to MSNBC. "He wasn't at all depressed or anything like that."

Sage was planning on being married, a first for the 36-year-old. He was also a director and producer of a few movies, including Vic, his own film.

"He was very proud of his father and proud to be his father's son," Braustein said.

Kelsey and Kayte Grammer welcome child, reveal a tragedy

Even as the couple make the announcement of a new daughter, they reveal they did not have twins as they had hoped.

Kelsey GrammerWho says Friday the 13th is bad luck? Not Kelsey Grammer, who welcomed a new daughter this morning.

Grammer and his wife Kayte welcomed Faith Evangeline Elisa Grammer this morning at 1 a.m. in Los Angeles. Faith was just over six pounds.

“We are thrilled,” the couple told People. “Mother and child are in excellent health.”

However, the birth was a reminder of a tragedy the couple experienced earlier this year.

“We were ecstatic earlier this year when we announced that Kayte was carrying twins. Tragically we lost the little boy shortly thereafter,” Kelsey and Kayte told People.

The couple also lost a child in 2010, and did not want to make this most recent loss something they shared with many people.

“This was not something we cared to make known publicly at the time,” they said. “It was unspeakably painful and we know that people will understand our desire to keep the news private then, as we know they will respect our privacy in this matter now.”

The Grammers were married in February 2011, and renewed their vows just last month in Las Vegas, according to MSNBC.

“A glorious birth with a lingering sadness is ours today,” said the couple. “We choose to celebrate the life that has been given us. We proudly introduce our Faith to the world today looking forward to the days ahead and the children yet to come.”

After the 2010 miscarriage and loss of the child earlier this year, Faith becomes the first child born to the Grammers, said MSNBC. Kelsey Grammer also has four children from previous relationships.

The 57-year-old actor and his 31-year-old wife held the baby shower in Chicago, where Kelsey was shooting the second season of the Starz show Boss. He plays the mayor of the city, leaving him little room to shoot elsewhere.

According to Deadline.com, the 10-episode season will premiere on Oct. 21, 2012.

Legendary producer Richard Zanuck dies at age 77

The producer was also the son of the man who started 20th Century Fox and a former production chief for the company

Richard ZanuckRichard Zanuck, a producer who has been working in Hollywood for more than a half century, died Friday.

Zanuck was nominated for three Oscars in his career for 1975’s Jaws, 1982’s The Verdict and finally won for 1989’s Driving Miss Daisy.

“Richard Zanuck’s successes rivaled those of his father, who co-founded 20th Century Fox, won three best picture Academy Awards and later fired his son in a studio shake-up,” said the New York Times.

Zanuck helped produce Steven Spielberg’s first film and also his first blockbuster film, Jaws, in 1975.

Spielberg told the New York Times that Zanuck “taught me everything I know about producing.”

Zanuck worked with Tim Burton six times in the last 11 years, on the films Planet of the Apes, Sweeney Todd, Charlie and the Chocolate Factory, Big Fish, Alice in Wonderland and this year’s Dark Shadows.

When the younger Zanuck worked for his father at 20th Century Fox, “the studio won 159 Oscar nominations, and three movies — The Sound of Music, Patton and The French Connection — were named best picture,” said the NY Times.

His father hired Zanuck as the production chief of 20th Century Fox in 1962, when he was still in his twenties.

The NY Times said after his firing, he held resentment against his father, but the younger Zanuck said they patched it up before his father’s death in 1979.

“It was different from the usual father-son relationship,” Richard Zanuck told The New York Times in 2003. “But I was able to patch everything up before my father died.”

Zanuck’s resume included almost 40 films, including The Sound of Music, Jaws, MacArthur, Driving Miss Daisy, Mulholland Falls, Big Fish, Sweeney Todd: The Demon Barber of Fleet Street, Alice in Wonderland and Yes Man. He also produced the 72nd Annual Academy Awards with his wife in 2000.

Zanuck’s publicist said he died of a heart attack. He was 77, the same age his father was when he died.

He leaves behind a wife, Lili Fini Zanuck, two sons and nine grandchildren.

Breaking Bad cast shares details of last season

The cast makes an appearance at Comic-Con and says that the show will end up in Germany this season.

Breaking BadBreaking Bad made an appearance at Comic-Con last night, and made quite an entrance. Stars Bryan Cranston and Aaron Paul suited up in hazmat suits and gas masks for the long-awaited panel.

“I think it’s awesome,” Paul said to the LA Times. “This is where our fans are. Sure, it’s nice to have a posh Hollywood premiere, but this is incredible.”

Show creator Vince Gilligan also showed up, and gave some hints on the new, and final, season of the AMC show.

“You’re going to read more subtitles in German than Spanish this season,” Gilligan said. Last season the show traveled to Mexico, and according to Gilligan, this season will travel to Germany.

“This season will take them to the German home of a multinational corporation that funded the drug empire of Walter’s now-deceased rival, Gus Fring,” said the LA Times.

“Whether it’s an evil empire or just certain executives remains to be seen,” said Gilligan.

The show’s stars don’t always know what twists and turns the plot will take, but they enjoy working with the mind of Gilligan.

“None of us on this panel know what’s in this man’s [Gilligan’s] head,” said Cranston, according to the LA Times. "We don’t ask and he doesn’t tell us. And we like it that way.”

The final season will undoubtedly offer many more of those twists and turns, and leave fans wanting more. But for the few fans lucky enough to have attended the Comic-Con panel on Friday, they have already seen the first episode of the season.

The season premiere of Breaking Bad will air on AMC this Sunday night, July 15, followed by the next seven. The last eight episodes of the season will air next season.

Cranston said the series finale has not yet been shot, so none of the stars know exactly how the series will end.

Were Steven Tyler and Jennifer Lopez asked to leave Idol?

0
0
After two of the three judges announced their departure this week, people are wondering if it was their choice to leave.

American IdolJennifer Lopez and Steven Tyler both announced they would not be returning as judges of American Idol this week, but was it their choice?

Steven Tyler made his announcement on Thursday, saying he wanted to refocus his energies on his band Aerosmith.

His statement focused on his band. He said that he strayed from his “first love, Aerosmith,” and he has begged for their forgiveness.

Jennifer Lopez released a statement about her departure.

She said she is very torn on leaving, but she feels this is the right decision.

But now TheWrap is reporting that a source close to the show has told them that the singers leaving the show may not have entirely been their choice.

“Jennifer Lopez says it was her choice to leave American Idol -- but the singer was actually dumped by Fox when she asked for a $2 million raise in salary to $17 million,” said the website.

They go on to say the source told them that Fox also “opted not to pick up Steven Tyler's option.”

And, the change may put judge Randy Jackson’s future with the show in jeopardy also.

“The exits -- and the possible departure of Randy Jackson, widely speculated to be considering an exit after judging on all 11 seasons of the former number one show -- come as it undergoes another dramatic overhaul, just two seasons after the show was retooled by introducing Tyler and Lopez,” said TheWrap.

The source told the website that JLo asked for a raise from $12 million to $15 million after the first season, and was surprised when the network didn’t make her a counteroffer on this new season's pay raise request.

There are many rumors about who might become new judges on the show, including Mariah Carey, Mary J. Blige, Lenny Kravitz and others.

TheWrap also said Simon Cowell has long wanted Mariah Carey on The X-Factor but she has never made that leap. Randy Jackson is also Carey’s manager, which could give him some job security with American Idol if she is hired.

Pork carnitas tacos

Recipe courtesy of Grab a Plate

Ingredients:

Serves 4-6

  • 2-pound pork shoulder roast, excess fat trimmed, and meat cut into 1-inch cubes
  • 2/3 cup diced onion
  • 2 cloves garlic, minced
  • 3 tablespoons canola oil
  • 1 tablespoon chili powder
  • 1 tablespoon ancho chili powder
  • 1/2 teaspoon cumin
  • 2 bay leaves
  • 1 tablespoon oregano
  • 1/4 teaspoon salt, plus a bit extra
  • 1/4 teaspoon pepper
  • 6 corn tortillas
  • 1 cup salsa
  • 1/2 cup shredded cheese of choice

Directions:

  1. Preheat your oven to 350 degrees F. Sprinkle a few pinches of salt over the cubed pork and set aside.
  2. Add two tablespoons of the canola oil to a large Dutch oven over medium-high heat. Brown the pork, working in a few batches if necessary. Once browned, remove the pork from the pan and set it aside.
  3. Using the same Dutch oven, add one tablespoon of oil to the pan and brown the onion. When it's almost finished, add the garlic. Next add the pork back to the Dutch oven.
  4. Add the chili powder, ancho chili powder, cumin, bay leaves, oregano, and the salt and pepper.
  5. Add enough water to cover the pork, cover with the lid, and place it in the oven for about two-and-a-half hours, stirring the mixture every half hour or so.
  6. After about two hours of cooking, most of the liquid should be evaporated. Remove the bay leaves from the pan.
  7. Next remove the pork from the pan, allow it to cool, and cut it into smaller cubes, or shred it.
  8. Put the pork back in the Dutch oven and allow it to cook for another half hour.
  9. Serve in the corn tortillas, taco style, with cheese, salsa and avocado as optional garnishes.

Slow cooking helps ensure a super Sunday dinner!
